- 0:57All right, good evening everyone, and welcome to the
- 0:59Monday Night Rewind. With it being Memorial Day, we
- 1:02are going to take a moment and remember those who we have lost,
- 1:06sacrificing their life so that we can live our freedoms today.
- 2:13All right, again, thank you guys and welcome to the Monday Night
- 2:16Rewind Tonight. We have a pack show with two
- 2:19amazing guests coming up. And here in just a few moments,
- 2:23we have Will Greenwell from the Wild Will throw Down.
- 2:25He's also the voice over at Salem Speedway and you can hear,
- 2:29in fact hear him in a lot of different places.
- 2:31And he's been on all the major streaming platforms at some
- 2:34point in his career and so excited to have someone of his
- 2:37caliber on here. So if you know anyone who's an
- 2:39announcer at a racetrack, tonight might be the night to
- 2:42tag him in the comments and say, hey, come on and listen.
- 2:44And and just in case you have questions, to learn from one of
- 2:47the best in the business. And then last Friday night, it
- 2:50was a historic night at the Kalamazoo Kalamazoo Speedway.
- 2:53And for a track that's now on its 76th season, for the first
- 2:57time ever, the youngest late model driver at 14 years old,
- 3:00Mason Metzger won the late model feature, beating a lot of
- 3:05talented drivers who are right behind him.
- 3:07So again, he will come on at eight O 5.
- 3:09We're so excited for that. And to celebrate his big win and
- 3:13his big moment this past Friday night at the Kalamazoo Speedway.
- 3:17Don't forget this Thursday night, you can throttle off with
- 3:20us on a Thursday night throttle where Boozoo and I come back and
- 3:22we preview the upcoming weekend, not only the schedule from
- 3:25around the area, but the storylines heading into the
- 3:28weekend. And this is another busy weekend
- 3:30where we have quite a few Sunday shows that are also on tap and a
- 3:33couple different locations in Michigan.
- 3:36And then of course, like I said, we do have Will Greenwell with
- 3:40us and he has the wild will throw down.
- 3:41So I want to do as mankind would say, a cheap plug time.
- 3:45And so definitely visit after he's done with us saying he's
- 3:49going to be recording his own podcast and getting some of
- 3:52those sections going. So definitely head on over to
- 3:55wildwillgreenwell.com to listen to his podcast covering regional
- 4:00news, track updates and everything, especially down in
- 4:03Southern Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and all that.
- 4:07So again, excited to have him. And before I forget to the
- 4:11marketing special still going on, you have all the way through
- 4:13September 30th where if you want to come on down to the sunny
- 4:16shores of Bridgeman, Michigan and have your car detailed,
- 4:20enjoy Waco Beach where you can see the Chicago side Chicago
- 4:25skyline right from our beachfront.
- 4:27You can come on down while that's getting detailed, go over
- 4:29Waco Beach, enjoy a day at the beach, come back when your car's
- 4:32all fresh and ready and drive back home ready to go.
- 4:35Having people do is double look to go.
- 4:37Wow, is that brand new Because I promise you when ELH is done
- 4:40with it, they'll think it's new. We do if you use code, the code
- 4:45top row we're going to be giving away some details.
- 4:48So the first one will be on July 13th right here on the Monday
- 4:50night rewind and then again on October 12th, especially as we
- 4:54head into the winter months. They do a lot of different
- 4:56packages to get cars ready, but other than that booze you it is
- 5:00Showtime. How are you doing tonight?
- 5:02Pretty? Good weather was kind of iffy
- 5:06this weekend. I did get a double header in but
- 5:08chopped the feature off on Friday and Saturday was Angola
- 5:12and I think we got, we started qualifying I think 3 hours after
- 5:16race time was supposed to start. The mist just would not end and
- 5:20kudos to them. They said they were getting the
- 5:22show in. They got the show.
- 5:25Oh, you know, that's something that I know you had gone to
- 5:29Butler originally and then you went the other direction.
- 5:32And so we had it at New Paris for the night of destruction.
- 5:36We were getting a little worried, but you know, with
- 5:37night of instructions, it's rain or shine and you know, we had a
- 5:41bunch of cars pulling into the pits.
- 5:43We had of course Wichter came down and they had their whole
- 5:45deal going on. And so his next event will be at
- 5:49Hartford Speedway on June 13th. I believe that is Saturday, June
- 5:5213th, they'll be back in action. So Wichter of course, doing
- 5:55Wichter things with Jeremy Templeton and Frank Gasco and
- 5:58and Phillip. But again, it's a it is a great
- 6:01show. But I know obviously we do rain
- 6:03or shine, but I know sitting over at Angola, you know, just
- 6:06kind of waiting like OK, anytime now.
- 6:09And The thing is, I went to the Matt Rackham weather app and you
- 6:11know, he doesn't lie. His app wasn't even showing
- 6:14anything that was. Happening.
- 6:16Yeah, I was doing the same thing.
- 6:18Yeah, Like, come on, Will or not Will?
- 6:19Will's our guest. Come on.
- 6:21You know, you're letting us down.
- 6:22Like out of every meteorologist, you're the one who we go to, and
- 6:27it's not showing anything on your app.
- 6:28So I wanted to almost protest that a little bit, but but
- 6:32anyways. And I know Crashers was over at
- 6:35Sod Buster's on Sunday and they had a wicked flip there that he
- 6:39got a part of and I know a couple other people got a part
- 6:41of. So I know it's a busy week in
- 6:44the area, but now you get to today and it's 82° and sunny and
- 6:48it's like, couldn't this have happened like, you know, 2 days
- 6:51ago and three days ago? But especially Kalam Zoo Friday,
- 6:55again, once that sun went down and it got cloudy, it's like I
- 6:58was hot and sweaty and now I'm cold and wearing my winter
- 7:01jacket. So I'm like, how did that happen
- 7:03that quick? And you know, that breeze comes
- 7:06off of Lake MI and you just kind of pay for it.
- 7:08So, but other than that, I know is a great weekend.
- 7:14I'm excited to talk to Mason about his huge win because that
- 7:16was that's been a long time coming for him and so excited to
- 7:21have him on. But I know just before that we
- 7:24have Will Greenwell. And I know, you know, I have
- 7:26been super excited for this for several weeks now.
- 7:29And then finally the time is here.
- 7:30So Are you ready to get started? Yes, Sir.
- 7:34All right, so let me go ahead and bring on when Will
- 7:37Greenwald. So again will welcome to the
- 7:39Monday Night Rewind. How's your Monday going so far?
- 7:43Well, guys, first and foremost, thank you for having me.
- 7:45A pleasure to be here. I'm glad I could talk to you
- 7:48guys. I know you cover the Michigan
- 7:49Park quite a bit and that is awesome because there are a ton
- 7:52of short tracks in Michigan that deserve the recognition.
- 7:55But first and foremost, I'm doing good, great Memorial Day
- 7:58weekend. And first and foremost, as you
- 8:00know with me and the veterans, this is a big holiday, something
- 8:04for us to remember. And you know what, to realize
- 8:07that life is not that important at times when you think about
- 8:10the men and women who sacrifice. So first and foremost, thank you
- 8:12so much for having me. Oh, again, I've been so excited
- 8:16when I reached out to you and say, Hey, do you want to come on
- 8:20and, and you're ready. And we didn't know whether we
- 8:22were going to do it on Monday or Tuesday at that point, but you
- 8:24had both days available. And it's like, man, I'm just so
- 8:28excited. So again, it's our honor to have
- 8:29you on. I mean, you're, I, I got to meet
- 8:32you at Painesville and, and hear you and then that's how I got to
- 8:35know you and your work and I followed you since then and, and
- 8:38keep up with what you're doing. And, and I mean, that's just
- 8:41where in the hour that we have, I mean, we have so much that we
- 8:45can touch within your career and all the opportunities that
- 8:49you've had. But then how you've also been
- 8:50able to build your platform and, and help veterans and with your
- 8:54T-shirt sales and everything that you do.
- 8:56So we'll definitely get into that and maybe how people, you
- 8:58know, might be able to get their hands on AT shirt and and help
- 9:01support that cause. So I'll just ask everyone.
- 9:05The easy thing to do is give this a show like share it out,
- 9:09help us continue to grow. That's where we've been having a
- 9:12just really strong podcast week after week after week.
- 9:15So the more you like, the more you share, the more it helps us
- 9:18continue to grow this platform. So again, will, I kind of gave
- 9:22you the heads up that, you know, between Boozer and I, we're
- 9:25shoot first, aim second kind of show.
- 9:27But I always start off with what some might call the softball
- 9:30question, right? But it really helps our
- 9:33listeners know who are you right?
- 9:35So who is Will Greenwell, How did you get into announcing?
- 9:39You know, Buju announced for the first time a couple weeks ago.
- 9:41He got awesome off the bench. And so you know, he he's Someone
- 9:45Like You know, him and I are talking.
- 9:47You just don't grow announcers on trees.
- 9:49So if you want to give us a a rundown of your background in
- 9:52your career. Sure, absolutely.
- 9:55Well, you know, I never expected to be an announcer or anything
- 9:58of that nature. Basically what had happened was
- 10:01in 2019, I'll never forget it. I grew up going to the local
- 10:06Motor Speedway in Louisville before it closed down.
- 10:09Then of course the Sportstrom Speedway right after, which is
- 10:11celebrating 80 years this year, so basically April the 27th.
- 10:16I'll never forget it in 2019, we were my father and I were going
- 10:20to Sportstrom through as fans. We sit on the back straight away
- 10:23at top row and it got rained out that night.
- 10:26So my father and I went down to a little track in Morgantown, KY
- 10:30called Cedar Ridge Speedway, which is primarily primarily a
- 10:33dirt track. And then I heard the Sportstrom
- 10:36had canceled and postponed to the following Sunday, April the
- 10:4028th. And I was listening behind me to
- 10:45the PA, the the announcers up there working together.
- 10:47And I thought to myself, you know, I've always wanted to be
- 10:50an announcer. I've never got the chance or, or
- 10:52anything of that nature. So what I did was I reached out
- 10:55to Mr. Brandon Taylor. He he also Co announces with me
- 10:58at the Sports Trump Speedway. And I said, you know what, I got
- 11:01a crazy idea. I said, I want to try to work
- 11:04with the announcer at the time, which was Mike Benson at Sports
- 11:07Trump Speedway. This was in 2019.
- 11:09He goes well, I mean, come on. So I arrive on Sunday afternoon
- 11:14to the track at Sportstrom Speedway.
- 11:16And little did I know, he introduced me to Mike Benson.
- 11:20And, and you know, I just wanted to say, hey, the next week, you
- 11:22know, if you don't mind, I would kind of like to work with you a
- 11:25little bit, try this little gig out a little bit.
- 11:27I think I got what it takes. And he was like, well, here's
- 11:30the mic here, work with me tonight.
- 11:31So I was like, oh crap, really tonight?
- 11:34I don't have no material. I've never done this thing
- 11:36before. But guys, when I tell you I
- 11:38tried it out for the first time, I touched that microphone and
- 11:42social media went off. Who is this guy?
- 11:45What is he doing? You know, this guy is the real
- 11:48deal, you know, and I loved working with Mike Benson.
- 11:51So if it wasn't for Brandon and Mike Benson, there would be no
- 11:53wild. We wild will green one.
- 11:55I'll get to the wild here in a minute on how that all
- 11:57transpired, but you know it, it's incredible to think about
- 12:022019 and speed up eight years later to 2026 and thinking of
- 12:07everything in between. It goes by too fast.
- 12:10It truly, truly does. You know, I, I said and think at
- 12:13times, well, 2019, you know, eight years and it's went by so
- 12:17fun by fast because it has been fun and that's what you want to
- 12:20keep it at. I told myself, if it ever
- 12:23becomes not fun, don't do this anymore.
- 12:26Well, after 2019, 2019 was a whirlwind that that's kind of
- 12:32when I started building that OK, Because my thing is how can I go
- 12:36bigger each and every year? Because if I'm going to do this
- 12:39professionally one day, which I have, I, I'm very blessed to be
- 12:44able to do that. I was like, I got to think of
- 12:46different things to keep the wheel turning.
- 12:48So 2019 ended, Mike Benson gave me the name Wild Will Greenwell,
- 12:54and he was, you know what the best way to create your name and
- 12:57solidify it is Mike Benson. I'm going to do a bus race.
- 13:00So in 2019, it was planned for me to get flipped.
- 13:05And, you know, I solidified the name Wild Will Greenwell.
- 13:09I didn't know what to think, but I did it.
- 13:12And after 2019 ended to Mike Benson decided he was going to
- 13:16retire. That was the announcer at the
- 13:17time. And I realized 2020, obviously I
- 13:20was going to be the announcer at sports drum.
- 13:23Well, at that time in 2020, I got all kinds of calls.
- 13:26Of course, we know COVID year. So it was kind of a weird, weird
- 13:29time for me to go out on my own, right.
- 13:32So I, I guess one could look at it like, well, you're not going
- 13:35to have many people to talk in front of.
- 13:37So you can practice a lot because you, you, you know, when
- 13:39they only allowed so many people to come in at the time, you
- 13:42know, it was like announcing to an empty stadium, which I hate
- 13:45it. It sucked.
- 13:46You know, it wasn't the same without the fans cheering and
- 13:49everything like that. Just a car going around his
- 13:51victory lap with nobody cheering was just a weird feeling to me.
- 13:55So 2020 I get the call from All Star Monster Truck Tour and go
- 13:59out in Salt Lake City, UT, start announcing there and the the
- 14:02arena. And then I went to Wisconsin,
- 14:04started doing a little bit of there.
- 14:07And then of course, I got the call from everywhere, you know,
- 14:09I Oklahoma, Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, you know, it was just
- 14:14a whirlwind of things that I got the chance to announce at all of
- 14:16these different tracks and facilities.
- 14:19Then, of course, looking at my notes here, 2021-2022 was my
- 14:26first year at Salem and that was a big deal.
- 14:29You know, I did not like the big track stuff stuff at first.
- 14:32I did not, I did not like calling it.
- 14:34I did just, it just wasn't me. The place grew on me
- 14:37tremendously. The action that we call on the
- 14:40Salem High banks is truly like anything else I've ever called.
- 14:44So 2022 we also did a big thing and Ryan bowling with Dirt 2
- 14:48Media came to me and said, you know what you're getting, You're
- 14:51getting bigger. Why don't we create this
- 14:53podcast? Why don't we do a podcast now?
- 14:56So I was like, OK, podcast, that's fine.
- 14:58I, I don't know what to do or I don't have the equipment.
- 15:00I don't know where to start. He was like, here's this odor
- 15:02equipment. I'll give it to you.
- 15:04You have to go to the guest. So it's kind of hard to kind of
- 15:07reach out and branch out. So I was like, you know what,
- 15:092022, this is awesome, let's do this.
- 15:13So we come up, he comes up with a logo, which is my old logo and
- 15:17he says, you know what, let's call it.
- 15:18I had the idea of the wild will throw down.
- 15:21I was already Wild will. So you know, how about a cool
- 15:24name like the throw down? So wild will throw down.
- 15:26So that just kind of meshed. And then from there, the 2023 I
- 15:31was at Salem Speedway also then became the director of
- 15:33operations at the Circle City Raceway in Indy from Eddie Van
- 15:36Meter and Donna Van Meter never wanted to do management in my
- 15:40life. And I'm so glad I got the chance
- 15:42to do it because I will never do it again.
- 15:45But you know, I I put the staff in place there 2023 we we did
- 15:50not at the end of the year break in an unhealthy relationship.
- 15:55Eddie loves me, I love Eddie. It was not one of those things
- 15:58where it well, let's leave a bad taste in the mouth.
- 16:00Let's leave. It was nothing like that.
- 16:02It was just like, management is not for me.
- 16:04I belong on the microphone. Trust me.
- 16:06That's where my heart is driven at.
- 16:08So then after 2023, I was still doing the Salem Speedway stuff
- 16:13during that time, which is kind of weird.
- 16:15And then 2024 was at Salem again and traveling again with
- 16:18different places. And then 2025, that was a big
- 16:23one. We, we hit, you know, different
- 16:25places. 2000, the XR tour, that was another thing that came up.
- 16:30Of course, the breaking XR after that year, everyone knows what
- 16:35happened. Just look at social media,
- 16:36right? So we're going to get into all
- 16:37that, but I'm blessed for the opportunity got to hit Oklahoma
- 16:41or Iowa and Minnesota. You know, it was a great time
- 16:45the drivers and working with the staff at those places.
- 16:48I will say that I did take a little bit of out of that.
- 16:50That is the positive. And then here in 2026, you know,
- 16:54we're celebrating five years the podcast.
- 16:56We got the brand new gold merch for the podcast and I will say
- 17:022025, one of the biggest new things that I did was how do we
- 17:06give back to the veterans, right?
- 17:08I always said if I have a platform, I want to use that
- 17:11platform for the better good. And Soldiers Angels was a big
- 17:15military organization in San Antonio we hooked up with and we
- 17:19gave $5.00 of every shirt sell back and we raised over $5000, I
- 17:24think $5055 for our veterans. And a lot of people are like,
- 17:28why veterans? Well, obviously they're
- 17:30veterans. And my wife is an A veteran of
- 17:32the US military now she retired major in 2022.
- 17:37I believe she might be watching so she might check that.
- 17:39But yeah, you got to, you got to watch that.
- 17:41But she retired and you know, it's it's a blessing for me to
- 17:46give back and being a military spouse throughout the years with
- 17:49her because a lot of people don't know we sacrificed a lot
- 17:52for me to work on my racing career.
- 17:54We actually lived five years geographically separated.
- 17:58She was in Louisiana. I was here in Kentucky with my
- 18:01family, taking care of my mom and dad at the time while I
- 18:04built this racing career. So in 2022 we finally lived back
- 18:10together and we, we live here in Jasper, IN now, which we love
- 18:14and and of course, a lot of different race tracks around us.
- 18:17So yeah, that's been the journey.
- 18:18This year we're doing Indy Warrior partnership and the next
- 18:22year we already have something we can't announce yet, which is
- 18:25already bigger and better. So we're, we're truly excited.
- 18:28We're we're truly able to give back to our veterans.
- 18:31And man, 8 years this career has been just none other than
- 18:34non-stop but great. Well, I mean, and that's where,
- 18:38you know, when you came to Painesville Speedway last year,
- 18:42Figure 8 and you did that, that's how you and I got to meet
- 18:44in person. And, and I was just impressed
- 18:47right away because I, I even called my mom and my stepdad,
- 18:51who I know are listening and I said pit Rd.
- 18:54TV has the broadcast rights, but I'm here in top row racing media
- 18:57as much as I'm here in pit Rd. TV.
- 18:58And you were, and you reached out too even before, oh, you
- 19:03know, who are you? What are you doing?
- 19:05What are you bringing? Just kind of to get to know me.
- 19:07And I hadn't had that experience before like that.
- 19:09So I mean, right away, it's just that first impression was just
- 19:13like, OK, this person knows what they're doing, right, You know?
- 19:17So I appreciated that. If you put all the tools
- 19:20together to be a good announcer, and here's how I view it, you
- 19:24have to look at all the perspective.
- 19:26You're not just calling the drivers.
- 19:28And yes, they are the reason you have a racetrack, but you got to
- 19:30call out your safety crew, give them appreciation.
- 19:33You got to call out you. You're doing great on media.
- 19:36You can call the TV broadcast, that's fine.
- 19:39I don't care if it's concession stand workers.
- 19:40They deserve some recognition, right?
- 19:43So as an announcer, obviously one of the big things is you got
- 19:46to fill time at at some point in that broadcast, you got to fill
- 19:50time. So why not utilize it to to give
- 19:52out respect and credit to those who deserve it that don't really
- 19:55get to be seen or heard of what you're doing it.
- 19:59It's great Top row media, you guys, I love top row media.
- 20:02When I'm not at a racetrack, I can see highlights from you
- 20:04guys. So that's just.
- 20:06You know, it's just common courtesy to me and there have
- 20:09been places I'm not going to name names that I've got in the
- 20:12fight in the press box with and arguments.
- 20:14Well, you can't say that on our broadcast.
- 20:15Well, then I'm going to leave the broadcast then because I'm
- 20:18going to say what I need to say. You know, so there have been
- 20:22press boxes where I did not walk out of, but there have been
- 20:25disagreements many times because you can't say this, this and
- 20:28that and it's not going to hurt this, this or whoever, you know
- 20:31what I mean? So you, you got to give respect
- 20:34to everyone in this industry. You just cannot go and, and just
- 20:38call this person. Well, you see that guy over in
- 20:40turn #1 he's working just as hard as this person.
- 20:42So fire me. I mean, you know, I have 15
- 20:46other tracks I can go announce that, you know what I mean?
- 20:50But I think each and every track that you visit, you should call
- 20:54out and respect each and every one of those workers and
- 20:56whoever's doing media in the grandstands.
- 20:59Yeah, that was, I mean, like I said, that was, I remember
- 21:02calling right away, I'm like, it's on pit row and I'm here in
- 21:04top row just as much as pit row. And and I'm like, you know,
- 21:08that. I mean, again, that was just
- 21:09really cool that you did that. But that makes so much sense
- 21:12too, because I know that's something when I was at Hartford
- 21:15in 2022, they gave me my first gig, my first official gig, Leah
- 21:19and Tim. And that's a track that you
- 21:20should check out to some point. Sure.
- 21:23They they didn't have a photographer that year either.
- 21:26So I was kind of like all in one for them.
- 21:28And they're say their track prep crew.
- 21:31I said, why don't we make hero cards for them?
- 21:34Because they're just as much as much as part of the show.
- 21:37And then at Kalamazoo, I did that for KTS as well or
- 21:40Kalamazoo track services team because one, they're one of the
- 21:43best in the in the nation. I mean, they train a lot of
- 21:45people. They go to a lot of training.
- 21:46So I said they're just as much as part of the show.
- 21:49I mean, we don't want to see them because if we're seeing
- 21:51them, that means something happened, right?
- 21:53But when they're in action and and then to respect and honor
- 21:57the trainings, everything they've done.
- 21:58So, so I totally get that perspective of like giving
- 22:01everyone the shout out. That's why I do my short track,
- 22:04you know, spotlights where it's, it's not just drivers anymore.
- 22:08It's like, let's shout out anybody and everyone because we
- 22:10all I Jay Freak said he's a photographer of pure contract
- 22:14design. One time at South Bend, he said,
- 22:17well, we're all in this together alone.
- 22:19And and I've kind of translated that into, you know, we're all
- 22:23in this together, but what can we do individually in our parts
- 22:27as the community? So so I definitely totally get
- 22:31that with you. So, you know, when you think of
- 22:34your announcing career, what are moments that stand out?
- 22:37You know, for you that you sit back and go one Dang, like I got
- 22:42to call that or be a part of that or even be a part of
- 22:46something that maybe people didn't know what was going to
- 22:50happen, but you as an announcer knew the plan and you got to
- 22:53surprise somebody. So what are some moments that
- 22:55stand out? Well, I mean, that's a great
- 22:58question, you know, and there are times over the past eight
- 23:01years that do run together and you don't really remember races
- 23:04as much. And then of course, you it
- 23:06clicks and you're like, wait, I do remember that time or people
- 23:09in the stands, the people I get to meet, you know, the fans.
- 23:11And, you know, you try to remember their names, but
- 23:13there's so many. You know, I will say 2020, COVID
- 23:17year, Yeah, that was only a year after and announcing in front of
- 23:21an empty racetrack. That was 1 memorable moment that
- 23:26I will never forget because it was so eerie.
- 23:28We had the outlaw Figure 8 cars there in the big race, one of
- 23:30the biggest car counts about 2425 cars, go figure the biggest
- 23:34car count and no fans in the stands.
- 23:37I I think it was also a mix of these guys want to get out of
- 23:40the house. So you know, they're coming to
- 23:42run somewhere that, you know, can be.
- 23:44So what we actually recorded it on Facebook live that whole
- 23:47race. And that is the first race I got
- 23:49sun poisoned at and had to go to the hospital to get IV because I
- 23:53sat out in the grandstands and recorded the whole show for the
- 23:55fans at home. So I took one for the team
- 23:58there. So yeah, that was a great year.
- 24:01You know the school bus racing deal, we won't that that will be
- 24:05a memorable moment because when they put me in the school bus, I
- 24:09did never I had never drive a drove a school bus must less get
- 24:13in one to wreck. So I'm sitting there in the seat
- 24:17and they're like, all right, you need to come out to the track.
- 24:18So I'm out to the track and then I know what lap it's coming.
- 24:22So basically I I can prepare myself just a little bit, but I
- 24:26did not know I was going to get hit that hard at the time.
- 24:29So the last thing I remember is the check engine light comes on
- 24:31and I'm hung up like this and just like, am I still alive or
- 24:34am I dead? OK, I'm still alive.
- 24:37So you know, that's a memorable moment.
- 24:39There's many Halloween 2 hundreds at Salem and power
- 24:42crack for two hundreds that you call that are very special to
- 24:46attract Lake Salem. They're I've gotten the
- 24:49opportunity to announce inside Lucas Oil Raceway Park up in
- 24:53Indy. So that was a a fun opportunity
- 24:57and there's just been so many different short tracks that I've
- 25:00met people Painesville, Lorraine, Mount Lawn.
- 25:02I got to announce that work with Glenn Luckett.
- 25:05You know, he is a big race director, president of the CRA,
- 25:08used to be CRA, now HRA, you know, and, and there's been
- 25:12other opportunities that, you know, I've gotten to announce
- 25:15different novelty events like demolition derbies or, or
- 25:18monster truck shows and you know, everything like that.
- 25:22So, you know, there's so many memorable moments over the
- 25:24years. But man, 2020, that was a big
- 25:27one when nobody was in the stands.
- 25:29And of course everyone knows COVID.
- 25:30So that was a big one. But I'm sure there's other
- 25:33events out there I just can't think of, but there's a lot of
- 25:36them. So I mean just in in what you
- 25:40just talked about in that little bit, you have also been
- 25:43recognized as one of the most versatile voices because again,
- 25:47you can go Figure 8 racing. You can do circle track racing,
- 25:50you can do the good old fashioned demolition Derby.
- 25:53You can get in a in a school bus and, and take a hit and, and do
- 25:57all these things. So what does it take to be an
- 26:00announcer who's not only highly sought at after nationally?
- 26:04I mean, it's not just like your local tracks fighting for you,
- 26:07but it's tracks in North Carolina and South Carolina and
- 26:10not everywhere. Like not only that, but then you
- 26:13know, what skills does it take to be able to go from like, Hey,
- 26:16I'm going to call a Figure 8 outlaw race today.
- 26:17And then tomorrow I get to see a bunch of monster trucks jumping
- 26:20and crashing. And then, oh, by the way, we're
- 26:22going to go see a station wagon punch somebody with their back
- 26:25end at the demolition Derby. So like, what does it take to
- 26:28have that that skill set that you can just flip the switch?
- 26:32Well, one, one thing that's helped, and I'm not going to
- 26:35lie, is the voice, right? The voice, the dark voice, the
- 26:39deep voice. It helps.
- 26:40I mean, it truly does. One thing about it is it's just
- 26:44your knowledge. You learn it.
- 26:45If you can learn different things here and there and put it
- 26:48all together like there's some easy things that you could learn
- 26:52your my race pass help. So there's some of your
- 26:55knowledge right there, knowing the drivers by name, not having
- 26:59to scurry through a paperwork and seeing, well, who's driving
- 27:02#68 who's driving #42 you know, if you know those drivers, take
- 27:06the time here. Here's my biggest thing, take
- 27:09the time and walk the pit area before the race starts.
- 27:11If you truly love racing and you're passionate about it, make
- 27:14sure you take your notes, go back there, learn some fun
- 27:18stories about these drivers that the die hard backwoods call blue
- 27:22collar racers. Learn some stories that you did
- 27:25not know and that is what the fans want to know.
- 27:27So first and foremost, you get yourself a little script going
- 27:31on. You know opening ceremonies, you
- 27:32know the invocation, you know all of that fun stuff.
- 27:35You know your order of events, you know, heat races are first
- 27:38possibly some B mains, B features and then an A feature.
- 27:42So just learn that stuff. I mean, the, the technique of
- 27:45announcing will come along with it.
- 27:46And I always say there there's never a bad announcer.
- 27:49Each announcer could be the worst you think, but it's his
- 27:53own little style. I always tell people in
- 27:56announcers that I've worked with young announcers, maybe 1819,
- 27:59who want to be a, make a career out of this thing.
- 28:02I always tell them you were always going to have criticism.
- 28:07Anybody in life, you're going to have somebody that does not like
- 28:09your style and you're going to have someone that loves your
- 28:12style. And I think that's the biggest
- 28:14thing. A lot of people quit announcing
- 28:17just because they're they're having people criticize them too
- 28:20much. And I always tell them, in 2019,
- 28:23I had a lot of people that didn't really like my style
- 28:26because I was still trying to find out what kind of announcer
- 28:28I was at that point. So once you get past that first
- 28:32year, you'll learn to grow. But you know, versatile, the
- 28:35versatility, man, that's a different 1.
- 28:39You know, when I first started to announcing just stock cars,
- 28:44you know, basically I learned best with getting thrown in the
- 28:48fire. So you have to make sure that
- 28:51you know what you're getting yourself into first and
- 28:55foremost. Now, can I go announce the
- 28:58Kentucky Derby, a horse race? Absolutely not.
- 29:01That is not for me. I do not know nothing about it.
- 29:03My wife knows about horses, but I could not announce a Kentucky
- 29:06Derby. I would just be like, there
- 29:08comes the next horse because this is just not what I want to
- 29:11do. As far as monster trucks, you
- 29:14know, I, so I grew up and I just, it's really cool.
- 29:17I pulled out some pictures the other day of when I was 2
- 29:20setting on a gravedigger's tire in Louisville.
- 29:23And you know, my dad would always take me to the monster
- 29:25truck shows And people are like, why did you get into monster
- 29:28trucks? Well, that's because of that.
- 29:31And this year I, I got the opportunity out of many, many,
- 29:37many, many people across the US to be one of the final eight
- 29:39selected for an audition for Monster Jam.
- 29:42And look, I'm not going to tell you that I'm never going to do
- 29:45that. They're they're possibly may
- 29:46come a time when I actually want to do that on the national
- 29:49level. At the time, short track really
- 29:53meant a lot to me and, and my family's health wasn't the best.
- 29:57So I had to put their health first.
- 29:59And you know, obviously this year I could not go on the road
- 30:02with that. A lot of people know that.
- 30:04Some people don't. I didn't really, I don't really
- 30:06announce many things on social media if I'm not 100% sure that
- 30:09it's going to happen. So versatility with all of that
- 30:13stuff. I always tell young announcers,
- 30:16don't give up. As you guys know, you're always
- 30:20going to have a criticism no matter where you lie.
- 30:23There's people out there that's not going to like you.
- 30:25If you're the best person in the world, people are not going to
- 30:28like you. And I'm going to tell you this.
- 30:30This is my quote here. You could shit a silver egg or a
- 30:34gold egg and someone would be mad.
- 30:36It's not silver, you know what I mean?
- 30:39So that's just part of it, right?
- 30:43So you cannot. And I used to be the hardest on
- 30:46myself, guys, I would tell you that much.
- 30:49You know, if I heard criticism, it was hard for me to take
- 30:52criticism at first. Like if this, I'm going to give
- 30:55up, I'm not doing this. And I'm like, you know what?
- 30:58No, don't listen to those haters.
- 30:59Just do what you have to do. And you can storm past anyone
- 31:02like that. And that's, I think part of my
- 31:06grid of getting this far is not letting those haters kind of
- 31:09hold me back a little bit. So yeah, that and just learn the
- 31:14drivers, walk the pit area. Take time to walk the pit area,
- 31:18learn as much information as you can because people have came up
- 31:21to me and they're like, we love knowing about these drivers.
- 31:24We would have never known that. And you'll hear me all the time
- 31:27say the biggest goal of my career would be driver fan
- 31:31connection because we've lost that a lot.
- 31:35Learning the drivers behind the helmets, kind of why I do the
- 31:38interviews, the on track autograph session, I tell tracks
- 31:41this all of the time. You will have more crowds in the
- 31:44stands because they want to do that.
- 31:46You know, getting the candy, getting the hero cards, all of
- 31:49the fun stuff. Shaking that driver's hands.
- 31:52We can have a 12 year old kid come in and they might meet this
- 31:55guy who finishes 25th all of the time, but they shake that kids
- 32:01hand and give them a hero card. They have just earned a fan and
- 32:04they may buy a merchandise item from them or not.
- 32:06But this is what's going to keep short track racing alive.
- 32:10Oh, absolutely. Well, and that's where I think
- 32:12back to Bristol Dirt Nationals Week 1.
- 32:14A few years ago, I met Alec Fett.
- 32:16They were the first crew that I came up to and they're from Iowa
- 32:21and I got to do that's top row was literally like what Buju,
- 32:24only a couple months old at that time and probably like 50
- 32:27followers, let's be real. But it was one of those that I
- 32:30got a chance to connect with them and just the way they
- 32:32treated me and the way they welcomed in the way that they
- 32:34kind of put up with my annoying self.
- 32:36At times I felt like I was annoying them.
- 32:38But with that I said, you know, lifelong fan, you know, just
- 32:41with their treatment of me and I still I share Alex's stuff all
- 32:45the time on my page. Follow what they do in Iowa.
- 32:48If it weren't 10 hours away where they race, I would make a
- 32:51trip there. But it's like, well, I got
- 32:53calums you on Friday. I can't be you know, it's like
- 32:55they race a lot on Thursdays, right.
- 32:56So that would that would be like a big trip back and forth and
- 33:00but one of these days, one of these times, I want to make my
- 33:03way out to Iowa and, and just, you know, to support them, not
- 33:06just from Michigan where I am, but actually they're in person.
- 33:10So, and that's just me, you know, when I was just starting,
- 33:13So I definitely know we just had, you know, DJ Mccotter on
- 33:17last week and he's someone who connects with fans and Joel,
- 33:20who's our announcer at Kalamazoo.
- 33:22You know, he hit the wall a lot and now he's our announcer.
- 33:25But when his front wheel drive racer, he'd hit the wall, do the
- 33:28things and you know, he had so many people just look forward to
- 33:31him. So absolutely, those connections
- 33:33matter. Oh it absolutely does.
- 33:35And you guys, you 2 know this more than anything as well.
- 33:38You know, when you walk the pits and meet these drivers and you
- 33:42know, this one driver may have gotten to this one guy and the
- 33:46fans are like, man, that guy's a cheater.
- 33:48He's you know, he sucks, he's not good.
- 33:50But you know that driving a different kind of different
- 33:53level in the back of the pit area, right?
- 33:55Like this guy, if you just knew him, right, If you just knew
- 33:58what kind of person he was. And it goes with the staff,
- 34:01right? The behind the scenes stuff that
- 34:03you and I, we all get to see it behind these press boxes.
- 34:07I always tell people the press box for me is the most fun I've
- 34:10had anywhere in my life because of everyone fighting up there,
- 34:14the scores and the the other stuff and the race director, how
- 34:18mad they get. I'm over here just dying
- 34:20laughing. And you know, I just want to
- 34:22point that out. That is the biggest thing too
- 34:24that fans love and I've always made a point to do it.
- 34:27You got to be a versatile. You got a multitask is a good
- 34:30announcer, right? You're the left ear needs to be
- 34:32on that race director. All right, guys, here's what
- 34:35we're going to do. We're going to disqualify and
- 34:36blah blah, blah. I tell the fans that because
- 34:39that connection between the race director and the fans is your
- 34:43bridge. Well, the race fans.
- 34:44If you do not do that well, what the heck is going on out here?
- 34:47What are we doing this for? Why is this lineup not not
- 34:50hurrying up? You know well, here's the
- 34:52problem. We got to get the number 22 in
- 34:54front of the number 36. We're we're out of order here.
- 34:57That's an example. If you connect that, it's just
- 35:00like an on on TV commentator. You know what, what is the
- 35:03official saying now? You know, So I think that is a
- 35:05big point that many people should do is it's let people
- 35:08know what the race director is saying.
- 35:10I will go on and say it. If you're just calling the
- 35:12number 36, I'll sell it over the air.
- 35:14I do not care, you know what I mean?
- 35:15But the fans want to know that stuff.
- 35:17Oh yeah, and well, and just as you were even talk about getting
- 35:20to know drivers behind the scenes.
- 35:22I mean, I don't know if boos you saw my face like, oh, I know
- 35:24driver who you're who I would talk about with that kind of
- 35:27thing, because you just know that right, and I and drew Jack,
- 35:30he wasn't able to make it tonight, but I know he's a big
- 35:32fan of you too. And him and I talk.
- 35:34I always tell him I was the dumb fan.
- 35:36You know, I was I was the fan in the stands who who thought they
- 35:40knew a little something and I've gotten on this side and I've
- 35:43learned really quickly. I knew like nothing.
- 35:46So I just really appreciated this side.
- 35:50But but and I'm a big connections person.
- 35:52So, you know, hearing you walk through the the Parian doing
- 35:56that, That's one thing that because I have my go pros and I
- 35:59have all my other things, I get a chance to talk with drivers
- 36:01and when I do, the spotlights are like, we had one
- 36:03conversation. You remembered all these things.
- 36:06It's like, yeah, notes don't mean anything to me, but that
- 36:08conversation meant everything to me.
- 36:10And so it's like I I store a lot of information.
- 36:13And so when we have things happen at like tell him, as you,
- 36:16I'll yell down at our announcer, Joel, say this Joel know this,
- 36:20right? And cuz he's just below me and,
- 36:23and he'll put it in his notes because I know sometimes he
- 36:26doesn't always get a chance to go through when he's doing some
- 36:28of the other things up top that it's like, Hey, this is like a
- 36:31mini wedge graduate. Let's promote that.
- 36:33Hey, this is the first time, you know, that's a dirt car on an
- 36:36asphalt track that right? Like, cuz fans do do love those
- 36:41things. The weird knowledge.
- 36:42I call it, you know, they they want to know that weird stuff
- 36:45that is meaningful. Well, here is the number one
- 36:48thing that I run into, believe it or not, and that is a veteran
- 36:52driver who has came back and especially because down here
- 36:56prominently the car count is the crown VIX, right?
- 36:58It's the old bomber days kind of style car.
- 37:01So a lot of these veterans, I don't care if it's a late model,
- 37:05if it's a street stock, if it's a sportsman, they're coming back
- 37:10after 10 to 15 years to run these because hey, I miss
- 37:13racing. How do I get back into it?
- 37:15So when you talk to these old veterans in the pit area,
- 37:18they'll say, well, I would love it.
- 37:20You know, they're excited. I would love if you told them
- 37:22that I won the 1979 Bush, blah, blah, blah.
- 37:26Or, you know, I did this, this and that.
- 37:28And, and I love that because you reminisce, right?
- 37:31Those veterans deserve that. And they are so pumped up that
- 37:35you talk to these veteran drivers and they know they're
- 37:37not going to win. OK, let's be honest.
- 37:39And they will tell you, I know I'm not competing with so and so
- 37:41and so and so. So, you know, if you give them
- 37:45that credit and announcer and I have many times after the race
- 37:49is over, they are lit up. They are ecstatic.
- 37:52You're bringing some credibility back to my name.
- 37:55And I raced in 1970 something or 80 something.
- 37:58We've had racers come out from 1960 something that got back in
- 38:01the car. This is just, this is part of
- 38:04our family of short track racing, right?
- 38:06This is why I live it. I breathe it because these guys
- 38:09deserve to be recognized. You know, let's be honest, if it
- 38:13wasn't for those pioneers back in the 60s, hell, I mean,
- 38:16Sportstrom Speedway and Salem celebrating 80 years this year,
- 38:19open in 1947, you know, So over the years, if you didn't have
- 38:23these pioneers all over the nation when the big tracks
- 38:26boomed back in the late 40s and 50s because many tracks across
- 38:30the nation started firing up after World war.
- 38:32So, you know, these are our pioneers and if you want to give
- 38:36them a little recognition, the ones that are still living and
- 38:39able to get in the car, that's what they love and live and
- 38:41breathe. Oh, yeah, And that's, and that's
- 38:45and, and Bhushu kind of did that with Rich Bull, who's a veteran
- 38:49up here where he, you know, that was Bhuju's first love, you
- 38:52know, as a kid with the first driver is remembering that and
- 38:56being able to recall that story. And so I mean, those moments
- 38:59stand out. And for those veterans, right,
- 39:00you're just honoring, you know, their past.
- 39:03And then Buju also has his Bullring Chronicles where he's
- 39:07highlighted like, old tracks like Playland Park up here in
- 39:10South Bend, which is now part of IUS, BS, Indiana University,
- 39:14South Bend University campus student housing is where the
- 39:17track used to be and still there.
- 39:20Yeah. And he's also, what was that
- 39:23track in North Carolina? Yeah.
- 39:27Okonichi, that Dale Junior did, you know, an episode on where
- 39:31they walked the track and all that.
- 39:32So, you know, even honoring those kinds of things to tell
- 39:34them those stories, because I bet there are many people who
- 39:38have probably passed through the hallways of those dormitories at
- 39:41IUSB who don't even know that play, that they're on historic
- 39:44property that at one time held all these things, including a
- 39:49roller coaster and baseball fields and big track.
- 39:52It's amazing. And those bleachers, you really
- 39:54have to be looking for them because there's growth in them.
- 39:56So right, it's all those legacy things do add up because you
- 40:00know, we lose a lot of that. And especially you have to think
- 40:03of media back then versus media now, right?
- 40:05Everybody has a phone, everybody has something that they can
- 40:09document. But back then, right, you had
- 40:11very. Talented specific people who did
- 40:13a lot of those things. Not everybody just had a camera.
- 40:16Not everybody just had that. So and I mean, you can go back
- 40:19to as you were talk about some of those careers and even in the
- 40:2270s and 80s probably didn't have just everybody doing that.
- 40:25So so it's pretty cool that you you do that.
- 40:28But I know I've asked a lot of questions so far.
- 40:31So booze you, I feel like I'm leaving you hanging out here.
- 40:33So I know you were in fact, you know, looking up and researching
- 40:37will to get to know him too. So what are some of your
- 40:39questions you have? So my which we're talking about
- 40:43the announcement and Lewis mentioned that I'm kind of newer
- 40:45to the game here and you mentioned filling time and
- 40:48that's clear to me. By far and away the hardest part
- 40:52I can, I've called races on PlayStation two my whole
- 40:54childhood. I can do that part.
- 40:56I feel like I'm comfortable with that.
- 40:57The filling time is hard. So I guess my question is how do
- 41:01you fill time? Well, you know, filling time,
- 41:04obviously you have, you have your big ones, right?
- 41:07You can only announce the concession stand.
- 41:08So bad times because people get tired of hot dogs.
- 41:11That's right. So, you know, then you go to
- 41:14sponsors, you know, the track sponsors, you can you wrap that
- 41:17in there as well. That'll fill a little bit of
- 41:18time, you know, the, the, the upcoming schedule, right.
- 41:22You know, I'm fortunate enough down here that other tracks let
- 41:25me announce other track schedules at at their facility.
- 41:28So that's good that I've always kind of preached at and music,
- 41:32music is your best friend. Whether people want to admit it
- 41:35or not, they do not want to hear the announcer 24/7 while they're
- 41:39at the racetrack. That's been one of the things
- 41:41that you can only talk to these people so much before they're
- 41:44like, you see them, right? You, you actually as an
- 41:46announcer, you can you watch the people out there and that when
- 41:49you get that, that look, you know, you're talking a little
- 41:53too much. You know, I've gotten them many
- 41:55times, but you know, I always say especially red flags, the
- 42:00red flag music, I always say, you know, do not keep talking,
- 42:04right. I always tell people that I was
- 42:06like, put on a good play mix. You know, you don't want some F
- 42:09this, F that. I, I, I hate that when I've been
- 42:12places where they actually put that on country music, you know,
- 42:16that's a safe bet. Happy music like, you know, I
- 42:20don't know, like dance music, you know, something like that,
- 42:24but you know, family friendly, obviously.
- 42:27So yeah, I think music is the biggest thing you can on on red
- 42:31flag situations. People don't want to hear you
- 42:33talk all the time. But after you hit your upcoming
- 42:35schedules, your concession stand and your sponsors and you know
- 42:39what is coming up the rest of the night, if if you got a
- 42:43plenty of a schedule now, if it's your feature race event and
- 42:45the front wheel drives and you're getting 25 cautions at
- 42:48that point, you're just like, all right, here we go.
- 42:50Let's let's get this throughout the night.
- 42:51So, but you know, I think that's the biggest time I'm filling
- 42:54time, sure. What's about time that you
- 43:01realize you're completely out of depth?
- 43:02Like you talk about all these different things you've done,
- 43:04the demolition derbies, the school bus races and all the
- 43:06novelty side stuff. What's one time that you were
- 43:09like? I don't know if this is for me
- 43:11at all, but I'm going to figure this out as we go.
- 43:13Oh, Demolition derbies for sure. Now watching the WWF back in the
- 43:20day that that would be actually some, some commentary that I
- 43:23could take or the old slobber knocker from Jim, Jim Ross and
- 43:27all that fun stuff that that's hard to do, boy, that's hard to
- 43:31do because you know that you I have to have my list because I
- 43:34do not know all of the drivers, obviously.
- 43:37And you know, what do you do? He's backing into him.
- 43:41He's hitting him. It's awkward, if that makes
- 43:45sense. You just.
- 43:46Oh yeah, he just hit him, you know, what do I say?
- 43:49You know, I'm not saying they'll hear it side by side and turn #1
- 43:52down the back straight away kind of deal, right?
- 43:54So it's not like, all right, here I am because I'm like this
- 43:57the whole time. Demolition derbies.
- 43:59Is that the number? Because sometimes on those cars
- 44:01crunched up, you can't see the right number, right?
- 44:03So I think that's him. He just hit him and the fans are
- 44:07like, this guy sucks. Yes, I know you want to come do
- 44:12this. The demolition derbies.
- 44:13If I had to do it, I will do. Do I love to do it?
- 44:17No. Do I love watching it?
- 44:18Absolutely. But commentary and demolition
- 44:21derbies, Yeah, that's not for me.
- 44:22I will say that. What's another role that you'd
- 44:25like to play in a rant? You said management wasn't for
- 44:27you, so we know you're not going back to that.
- 44:29You know you'll, we know you love announcing.
- 44:31If there's something else that you could try at the racetrack,
- 44:33what might that be? Well, you know, the good thing
- 44:35is at a racetrack, as you know, sometimes you have to be
- 44:38versatile. If I'm down to the pit area
- 44:40walking will can you flag go on and flag and tell him get off
- 44:44the track for practice. Sure, I can do that.
- 44:46I'll I'll try to flag a little bit.
- 44:48Can you get on the pit mic and announce, hey, sportsman's you
- 44:51up to the lineup shoot now we need you to the lineup shoot
- 44:53immediately, blah, blah, blah. So your pit, you're the pit mic
- 44:56now can you run and get a thing of hot dogs for the can cook at
- 45:01the concession stand? Sure, I can do that.
- 45:03Absolutely. Hey, can you can you check them
- 45:06in the pit window? Can you give them a wristband?
- 45:09So yes, I've done everything. Obviously, my home is in that
- 45:12press box. That is where I feel the most
- 45:14comfortable. That is my home.
- 45:16And believe it or not, this is going to surprise a lot of
- 45:19people. I'm one of the most nervous,
- 45:21anxious people you will ever meet at the racetrack.
- 45:24When I'm walking in front of someone, our grandstands, it
- 45:28took me for years to make eye contact.
- 45:31When I'm inside those four walls of the press box, I become me.
- 45:34Will Greenwell. I can just do what I do the
- 45:37best, but I've gotten better over the years at that.
- 45:41You know, it's just I don't know, it's not being scared or
- 45:44or not humble to talk to the audience because I love those
- 45:47people. It's just when I'm you get all
- 45:50eyes on you and that's just part of it, right.
- 45:53So you go out to get you a drink or go to the bathroom at a press
- 45:57bar. If your press box don't have a
- 45:59bathroom, like you have to go intermission.
- 46:01You know, people are know who you are.
- 46:03You're walking down. You know, the eyes are on you.
- 46:05You can feel it. This guy you've always talked to
- 46:08says, Hey, we'll stop here for a minute.
- 46:09You're not going to ignore them. I do not and ignore them, but
- 46:12you, you, everybody is now watching you in that
- 46:14conversation because you're who you are.
- 46:16You know what I mean? So for me, that is the hardest
- 46:21part about announcing, believe it or not, is just trying to
- 46:24come out of that anxiety, which I played off very well.
- 46:27Now when it's time to work, I work and I'm zoned into what I
- 46:30need to do, whether it's on track interviews, announcing a
- 46:33race in the press box. I am who I am, so that's just
- 46:36been a great thing about it. Now with my merchandise this
- 46:39year and last year, I think it's helped me a lot because we've
- 46:42had my tent, my beautiful wife sets up in the concourse.
- 46:45I signed autographs on the shirts when I did the school bus
- 46:47race and talking to these people really made me less anxious to
- 46:51be honest with you, if that makes sense.
- 46:54It's interesting you say that because I have anxiety myself
- 46:57and announcing is definitely me going out of my comfort zone and
- 47:00I sure I think I have the same struggle.
- 47:01Isn't that the face to face interactions are a little more
- 47:03difficult than being in the press box and everybody's
- 47:05looking that way? It is.
- 47:08And that's awesome that you said that, you know, because in in
- 47:102019 with Mike Benson, it was the most hardest thing in the
- 47:14world for me was like, I'm not cut out for this.
- 47:18Another voice. Yes, you are your ass.
- 47:19Better do it. OK, so, you know, and I had a
- 47:24lot of great support around me and they've helped me out a lot
- 47:27and my family, you can do this. The biggest supporters, biggest
- 47:30cheerleader is my wife. I'm telling you again, she's the
- 47:32biggest supporter I have. If it wasn't for her, the
- 47:36merchandise, people just don't see the behind the scenes.
- 47:38She does my QuickBooks. We've become an LLC in Wildwood
- 47:40Entertainment. She does all of that some fun
- 47:43stuff. You know, she does the
- 47:45merchandise wrapping. She's you know, she's wrapped
- 47:48our, our, our new blankets and whatnot.
- 47:50So I mean, yeah, I mean, there's just been so many different
- 47:53things that she's done behind the scenes that if it wasn't for
- 47:56her, yeah, I can be the face and go out and and make the name.
- 47:59I can talk in the press box all day long.
- 48:01But the behind the scenes stuff, that truly was where it really
- 48:04comes together. Do you want to talk a little
- 48:07bit? Oh, sorry Buju, I didn't.
- 48:09Go ahead, Louis. I'll go over it.
- 48:10Since you're just talk about the merchandise, that's what made me
- 48:13think if we just can cut really quick.
- 48:14Do you want to talk a little bit about how people could get those
- 48:17T-shirts, especially since $5.00 of that or yeah, it's $5, right?
- 48:20It goes towards since you already talked about your
- 48:24merchandise and then we can go back Buju that way since you
- 48:27just showed it like, oh, this is probably a good time to to where
- 48:31can people get all that especially help with your 'cause
- 48:33that you do. Yeah, so this year, 5th
- 48:36anniversary, we went a little extreme on the merchandise,
- 48:38which it's going really well. The sales are great.
- 48:41So we had the brand new blankets.
- 48:43Now these blankets basically I try to sell all the merchandise
- 48:47cheap, 25 bucks basically. This is actually a different
- 48:51kind of blanket. This blanket you can sit on the
- 48:54the bleachers and you can turn it over if it's raining because
- 48:57it's waterproof on the other side.
- 48:58So you can actually use it as a shield gear.
- 49:02Yeah, we released the brand new hats this year, the mesh on the
- 49:05back. So those are going really well.
- 49:07And of course, the big seller is our Military Gold Metallic
- 49:11T-shirts, and this is really something that I take pride in.
- 49:16So as you can see, I'll try to zoom it in there a little bit.
- 49:19You can see the cars. It's got the Crown Victoria, the
- 49:21Figure 8 St. stock and the Super Late Model on it with our logo.
- 49:27And the reason I keep these so cheap, 15 bucks is because of
- 49:30all of these marketing partners on the back.
- 49:33As you can see, we got a lot of them that came on board this
- 49:36year and all the tracks at the bottom that I've had a little
- 49:39bit of work in. Sportstrom, Indianapolis, Speed,
- 49:42Drum Circle City, Salem, yeah, Salem's on there.
- 49:45And then of course, KKR. So all of that stuff.
- 49:48And these are these are good 5050 polyester and cotton.
- 49:51We, we do it all big because the sponsors, again, they keep it
- 49:54cheap and if you're interested in one of those are 15 bucks.
- 49:58There is a shipping cost. Sometimes it's different on
- 50:00where you ship 8-9 dollars depending on what it goes.
- 50:03But you can just go to my Facebook page, Will Greenwell.
- 50:06Everyone knows that I've have a lot of followers.
- 50:09You can just send me a direct message on there.
- 50:11I try to check all of those and say, hey, I'm interested in one
- 50:15of those shirts and and we'll figure out a way to ship it to
- 50:17you and get it all there. But we've had people order our
- 50:20merchandise from Seattle to California this year to Texas.
- 50:24So we're very blessed in that. And basically it goes to a great
- 50:28'cause our military and, and I forgot to show you that, but
- 50:32basically the India Warrior Partnership, they are a big part
- 50:35of that. So their, their badge is stamped
- 50:38on there as well as last year's the Soldiers Angels are on
- 50:40there. So we want to make sure we get
- 50:42the calls out. And Indy Warrior Partnership,
- 50:44they do a lot of military housing for homeless veterans.
- 50:48And that's such a big need because in my opinion, no
- 50:52veteran should ever go homeless. I'm telling you that now we've
- 50:56kind of forgot them in our system throughout the years,
- 50:59whether it be healthcare, whether it be home shelter and
- 51:03it just, it's sickening to to know that a veteran is out there
- 51:06homeless for sacrificing all that they have for our country.
- 51:08So. Well, that's where I was going
- 51:11to ask like, you know, those, those or those organizations
- 51:14that you work with in their background and what they do.
- 51:16And so and why this, you know, selling this shirt, you know,
- 51:20the $5.00 of that goes, you know, to help, you know, these
- 51:23organizations who obviously, you know, with VA hospitals and all
- 51:27these different things being being cut all the time.
- 51:30It's like, you know, these organizations probably are the
- 51:32ones, you know, who need the most help that are sometimes
- 51:35forgotten. You know, when you have us
- 51:37causes that, you know, like, obviously breast cancer's a big
- 51:40thing and other cancers are a big thing.
- 51:41But then sometimes, you know, we forget the military, right?
- 51:45Like, I mean, right now, obviously we have conflicts
- 51:47going on all across the globe. And, you know, they're
- 51:49sacrificing, you know, their their life for our freedom so
- 51:53that we can live hopefully safely in this country and all
- 51:56that. And it's sometimes like when
- 51:58they come back, they're almost forgotten because of that.
- 52:00It's like yeah 1. 100%. Now, now I don't know you
- 52:03because you're back home and you're just doing your normal
- 52:06daily stuff, right? You're only we know you on the
- 52:08news, but that's it. Yeah, and you know, that's the
- 52:11thing. You know, there's all kinds of
- 52:13other organizations out there that support those
- 52:15organizations. And trust me, they are as
- 52:17important as the military organizations, but you know,
- 52:20whether it be these big corporation, and I'm not going
- 52:23to get into names and all of that stuff, but these big
- 52:25corporations of giving back is they're finding out it's really
- 52:28not using The Big Bang or the buck going towards that
- 52:31organization. So what I do is I research the
- 52:35organizations that I know, soldiers, angels, they're big on
- 52:39gift baskets. And basically, I've actually had
- 52:42a couple military personnel last year that were retired that came
- 52:46up to me and said soldiers Angels, They actually sent me
- 52:48three care packages when I was on Iraq and I did that.
- 52:52So that made me feel great. Indy Warrior Partnership, I know
- 52:55a couple that have homes built for them.
- 52:57You know, I know where they're building the homes at.
- 52:59So yes, they're legit. So I do not want to give it to
- 53:03an organization that's not legit or not giving back to their true
- 53:05potential. And another thing is, do I, am I
- 53:09going to do the military next year or somewhere else, maybe
- 53:11someone else, maybe another organization that doesn't do
- 53:14with the military? So that's why I'm kind of trying
- 53:16to branch out a little bit. And each year I want to do
- 53:19something special that I know that an organization is truly
- 53:22giving back to that 'cause that I'm passionate about.
- 53:25Yeah, so Buju, I know I put a pin in your question really
- 53:28quick. So I but that's where I thought,
- 53:30you know, going there, talking about the shirt, talking about
- 53:33the cause. It's like since you showed the
- 53:35blank, it's like, oh, that's the perfect opportunity to do the.
- 53:38I don't call it a cheap plug because that's not, it's not a
- 53:41cheap thing that you're doing, but like.
- 53:43I appreciate it, no worries at all.
- 53:45You know, get these T-shirts out there, right, because someone
- 53:47watching may reach out and say, hey, we would like to get AT
- 53:50shirt and support that cause. So it's like that was perfect
- 53:53opportunity. OK, Boozoo, your turn.
- 53:56Two more questions. Not throwing it back to Lewis
- 53:58please, but but your ultimate goal.
- 54:01Do you have an ultimate goal in you're announcing career?
- 54:05Is there something a big red circle that you have on
- 54:07something or you just riding the wave seeing what happens?
- 54:10I know you have a great race tracker, you have a great home
- 54:12in Salem and a lot of great race tracks around you and mention
- 54:14the great opportunities you've had, but is there one thing that
- 54:17you have a big red circle around it?
- 54:19This is what I want to do one day.
- 54:20You know, I always say that every year I want to go bigger
- 54:25and better. I had an opportunity with
- 54:28Monster Jam that was the national level of the top.
- 54:31You know, we're talking Gravedigger Max D, we're talking
- 54:35the top top level monster trucks and there may be RC truck right
- 54:39here. Yes, exactly, exactly.
- 54:44And I'm not going to say I'm not in talks with them right now.
- 54:46I'm not going to say that there may be an opportunity come up
- 54:50where you know they understood last year that my dad was not in
- 54:54a good place. Well, now we have him moved out
- 54:55here by us. So that kind of opens up the
- 54:58door for a little more potential.
- 55:00Not going to say anything's definite yet, but there could be
- 55:04a national spotlight somewhere down the road.
- 55:06For me, I know that I'm good enough and that's not be being a
- 55:11confident ass, right? Excuse the language, but I I
- 55:15know that I had the potential to do that and reach that go.
- 55:19I'm 36 years old right now. I've done a lot that a lot of
- 55:21people at that age and eight years ago could not have done.
- 55:25So I'm very blessed, very, very thankful for my faith and
- 55:30praying that I I get to this level.
- 55:33But I'm satisfied right now. If that never comes.
- 55:36I am so happy with what I accomplished because I have so
- 55:39many different race tracks down here.
- 55:41And someone was telling me the other day, do you know real will
- 55:44that you are the only announcer that has announced at the same
- 55:48time to competitors of each track?
- 55:50And I'm like, well, I never really thought of that.
- 55:52She he goes think about it, Indianapolis speed drums sports
- 55:56Trump, Salem and Mount Lawn and all of these tracks Brownstown
- 56:00Speedway that have competed for over the years and you know,
- 56:03they're still competing. Not in a bad way.
- 56:05But hey, don't run on me this night.
- 56:07Don't run on me that night. You're the only announcer that
- 56:09is announced in all these press boxes at the same time
- 56:12simultaneously the same year. And you're like the link of all
- 56:16these. Hey, you know, go tell them not
- 56:17to do this or go tell them not to do that.
- 56:19I said I'll tell them, but I ain't going to make no promises.
- 56:21But you know, it's been a blessing to think about, to be
- 56:25honest with you, because you know, those promoters have
- 56:27enough faith in me when I'm announcing at a competitor's
- 56:31track that, you know, I don't want to see them as a
- 56:34competitor. They're all short track race
- 56:36tracks that deserve to be there. And I think that's the biggest
- 56:40thing I, I think, you know, just trying to let them know that,
- 56:42hey, I cannot help what they did, but I am going to support
- 56:47those tracks that support me. So, you know, I'm happy that I'm
- 56:51able to do that for sure. And then on the lighter side, a
- 56:54little bit one track that you haven't been to that you want to
- 56:57visit a bucket list track. What's 1?
- 56:59Oh, boy. Well, I'm friends with the
- 57:01announcer and he's gave me an open invite to Bowman Gray
- 57:05Stadium. So, yeah, that the Madhouse, you
- 57:09know, that has been a big a big bucket list item, I think
- 57:14because we were stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina,
- 57:17which you have to drive through Winston Salem to get there.
- 57:21And so that place always has been on my radar.
- 57:25I've always wanted to do it. Yes, I have the connections down
- 57:28there. The time I have to get down
- 57:31there. It's little to none that that's
- 57:33the other thing when you're announcing for four to five race
- 57:35tracks. And now a lot of people just
- 57:39heard that down here at Thunder Valley Dirt track in Salem has
- 57:43reopened and we're adding like 12 dates on Friday nights and I
- 57:46come home and tell my wife, hey, I got 12 more Fridays.
- 57:48I'm taking your what I I know where am I going to get those
- 57:52at? Well, I'm, I'm giving 12 more of
- 57:54my Fridays. But what she doesn't know that I
- 57:56finally talked her into was, oh, you're our social media girl for
- 57:59the inner track. So you're going to post the
- 58:00winners at that track. She goes fine, just because I
- 58:04want to spend more time with you.
- 58:05That's the only reason I'm doing it.
- 58:08So I guess any advice out there to the guys who want their woman
- 58:11to go to the racetrack, get them a job and whether you don't see
- 58:14them already, they have to go because they want to spend time
- 58:17with you. That's how you do it.
- 58:19Well, there, there you go, Buju. You know, that could be your
- 58:24selling point. Hey, you know, date night at the
- 58:26races, except I'm going to be busy on the mic.
- 58:28But just think of how famous I am.
- 58:30So yeah, I will. Hang out with the tech guys for
- 58:33a while. Now I will tell you our first
- 58:37date I still she tells everyone this in a bad way.
- 58:40Our first date we met online. We both got out of bad
- 58:43relationships in 2012 thirteen. It was 2013 June and I was a fan
- 58:50of the sports jump Speedway at the time.
- 58:51So I would go on Friday or excuse me, Saturday nights.
- 58:54So she goes where you want to go for a date at.
- 58:56So not thanking, I was like sports jump Speedway, let's go
- 58:59to a date. I will take you to a racetrack.
- 59:01So she shows up, we meet in the parking lot.
- 59:04She's got this beautiful outfit on, not dressed to go to a
- 59:07racetrack. I'm like, OK, this is we'll get
- 59:10her there. So we get in the car.
- 59:12She obviously, I don't know why I didn't think about doing this,
- 59:15but I did not take her out to eat on our first date.
- 59:17So I took her right to the racetrack.
- 59:20I wasn't thinking so just trying to be the cute me and that I am
- 59:25I bought her a ring pop. I'm like, so here's your dinner,
- 59:28here's your ring, Pop. Maybe one day you'll get a real
- 59:31one on your fingers. Some stupid stuff that I said.
- 59:34You know, you got to think when you get older, you always think
- 59:37about the stupid things that you said when you were younger.
- 59:40And so we sat there, best day ever because I did not have to
- 59:44talk because you could not talk because of the roar of the
- 59:47engine. So it's the best thing ever.
- 59:49So after that night at Sportstrom, we went to the big
- 59:52walking bridge in Louisville. And we're like, so is this a
- 59:56thing? She was pretty tired.
- 59:57It was like 1:00 AM. Again, no food.
- 1:00:00Loud race cars and finally we walk on the bridge at night and
- 1:00:04I was like so are we a thing? And I guess she goes, yeah, we
- 1:00:07are sure. So here we are 10 years married
- 1:00:11later and about yeah, the 12 years in it as a relationship.
- 1:00:15And she hasn't left me yet, so at least she knew what she was
- 1:00:18getting into when she married me.
- 1:00:21That that's awesome. That just you know that I'm
- 1:00:25going to clip that that's awesome.
- 1:00:27That's it. And then since I said clip, that
- 1:00:28stream yard is going to do its own thing and put a clip spot
- 1:00:30there because that's there you go.
- 1:00:32Awesome story though, right? Because think of how many
- 1:00:34people, I mean, we can see at Kalamazoo, you can see at
- 1:00:37Plymouth, South Bend, wherever you go, M40, how many people
- 1:00:40have met at the racetrack, right?
- 1:00:42And that's where, you know, a lot of times like the the new
- 1:00:45Paris United destruction, people count me as part of their
- 1:00:48family, right? I'm an outsider that came in a
- 1:00:50few years ago. But they've really, you know,
- 1:00:52embraced me as part of that. And it's like, just think of how
- 1:00:54many race tracks, they're not just important for an economic
- 1:00:57driver. They're just not important for a
- 1:01:00place of entertainment. But they're a place where people
- 1:01:02meet lifelong friends, people who they would call family,
- 1:01:06think of as family, you know, all these things.
- 1:01:08And then in this case, that's where you know, love blossomed
- 1:01:13for you is at the racetrack with a blow pop ring.
- 1:01:17That, that's it. You know, I like, I mean, I'm
- 1:01:20sorry. At least give me some pointers.
- 1:01:21I was trying to be cute, but oh, yeah, because I didn't even have
- 1:01:24dinner. What are you talking about?
- 1:01:25And I'm like, well, I mean, you can enjoy the race.
- 1:01:27That'll be all right. Again, that that's an awesome
- 1:01:31story though, So that's well and and now again, 12 years later,
- 1:01:35you can remember that and and share them say hey, you just
- 1:01:37never know, you might find your next love at at the racetrack.
- 1:01:40So I know we're running out of time here and you have your own
- 1:01:44podcast that you have to record here after this because your
- 1:01:48partner in crime is going out of town.
- 1:01:51And so do you want to talk a little bit about your podcast
- 1:01:53and your mission with that? And then I'm also trying to
- 1:01:57think there was one more thing I wanted to oh, and the race
- 1:02:00tracks that people can currently hear you at, you know, if they
- 1:02:03want to come down and and hear you call a race.
- 1:02:05Obviously, I know Salem, they were doing Sunday shows at the
- 1:02:08start, but now they're back on Saturdays for the most part.
- 1:02:11But if you want to talk about all of that podcast where people
- 1:02:14can listen and then where people can hear you announce races.
- 1:02:17Sure. So the podcast, absolutely.
- 1:02:20You know, we're five years into this thing.
- 1:02:21We have different guests. We've had Jeff Bodine on, we've
- 1:02:24had, you know, we've had Devin Moran and Lucas Oil Late Model
- 1:02:27series on, we've had different people on locally.
- 1:02:31That's kind of our big thing. We want to kind of showcase
- 1:02:33someone locally that really doesn't get the attention that
- 1:02:36they deserve. So each and every week, usually
- 1:02:38on Wednesday or Tuesday nights, it's released.
- 1:02:40After I edit it, I do all of my own editing.
- 1:02:43So basically there is my logo. You can see it on the screen.
- 1:02:45The Wild will throw down 5th anniversary.
- 1:02:48You can go many places to hear it.
- 1:02:50You can go to obviously www.wildwillgreenwell.com and
- 1:02:54absolutely listen to it for free.
- 1:02:56Or you can go to Spotify, you can go to Apple Podcast,
- 1:02:59Android, Amazon, iHeartRadio, all of the big, big platforms to
- 1:03:04listen to it. So yeah, the Wild will throw
- 1:03:07down. As far as where I'm announcing
- 1:03:09that this year I am back at the Sportstrum Speedway down here at
- 1:03:12the Kentucky Indiana border. We were talking about the car
- 1:03:16counts about 65 to 7 each Crown Vics each week.
- 1:03:19So that is an awesome place to go to watch racing.
- 1:03:22Also our modifieds, our Sportsman's are down there as
- 1:03:24well. And the Salem Speedway, yes
- 1:03:26indeed I'm back there at 2022 now 26th of my fifth year at
- 1:03:31Salem, hard to believe as well. So yes, we're racing mostly
- 1:03:34Sundays and Saturdays now. Saturday schedule comes out June
- 1:03:376th, our next scheduled date. That is when the modifieds
- 1:03:40return to the high banks. So Salem Speedway, I'm doing a
- 1:03:44few races at the Indianapolis Speed Drum this year.
- 1:03:46I'll be on the broadcast TV crew for the three hour.
- 1:03:48It's our 50th annual $50,000 to win three hour this year.
- 1:03:53Absolutely great. Going to be about 60 outlaw
- 1:03:55Figure 8 cars from all over the country.
- 1:03:57So check that out. Yeah, in different places.
- 1:03:59I just pop in. They asked me to announce and
- 1:04:01when I can watch. But predominantly this year, the
- 1:04:05Speed Drum, the Sportstrom, the Salem Speedway is predominantly
- 1:04:08where we're going to be at. 1 and I didn't know all the tracks
- 1:04:12in that area, so when you're sharing something for the speed
- 1:04:15drone, I'm like, hold on, there's all these drones and I
- 1:04:19wanted to make sure that I was calling the right drones because
- 1:04:23again, I'm like, well I know there's Indianapolis and then I
- 1:04:25know I didn't know about the other one, right?
- 1:04:28And so that's where I looked it up on the maps to go OK, where's
- 1:04:31that located? So it's because of you, you
- 1:04:34know, that I've learned about other tracks down in that area.
- 1:04:36So yeah. Sportstrom Speedway is a very
- 1:04:39historic place. You know, in 1947 it opened
- 1:04:42right there when they were shipping crate containers down
- 1:04:44the Ohio River. And I know we're we're running
- 1:04:46out of time and I'm not going to get into the history of it, but
- 1:04:48they actually did ostrich races there back in the 40s and 50s.
- 1:04:52A lot of these short tracks, I did not know did ostrich races.
- 1:04:55Thunder Valley Raceway in Salem did ostrich races.
- 1:04:58So when I tell that to the fans, like, are you crazy?
- 1:05:00It's like, no, it's just this historic time.
- 1:05:03And the drone actually means sports, a kind of different
- 1:05:06sporting events, boxing, racing, you know, running, stuff like
- 1:05:10that. So that's where the drone kind
- 1:05:12of came in back in the 40s and 50s.
- 1:05:14Wow, OK, see, I learned something new.
- 1:05:17I mean I. You never know ostrich racing.
- 1:05:20I I don't, oh, I wonder if we, I wonder if anyone legally can get
- 1:05:24away with that. In today's world, probably not.
- 1:05:26PETA would probably be laying down at the parking lot, so I
- 1:05:29would not. We would see them all over.
- 1:05:32But that. I mean, imagine that though,
- 1:05:34right? Like ostrich races come in, you
- 1:05:36know, you know, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday.
- 1:05:39And I mean, we have pig races. If you go to a County Fair, they
- 1:05:42have pigs doing this, you know, this and all that.
- 1:05:45So I mean ostrich. I would have never.
- 1:05:48Next time I go to Pottawatomie Zoo, I'm going to look at the
- 1:05:50ostrich and go, Are you ready to race?
- 1:05:52Let's saddle up. Hey, but you know what?
- 1:05:54The fastest bird. So you know what?
- 1:05:56That makes sense. Yeah, man, I would not.
- 1:05:59I I didn't know that was something Buju.
- 1:06:03Did you know that I've never heard of ostrich races?
- 1:06:07That's a Bullring Chronicle episode right there.
- 1:06:09There you go, that's. What we need to do, but again,
- 1:06:12well, I know it's eight O 5 and I know Mason just popped in and
- 1:06:15you have two segments of your podcast that you get to record
- 1:06:18right after this. So we helped warm up your voice
- 1:06:20for it, but. Hey guys, I appreciate you so
- 1:06:23much for having me. I love what you guys do.
- 1:06:26We need more media in the racing world so I love taking the time
- 1:06:29to chat with you guys. Anytime you need me just let me
- 1:06:32know. But thank you so much for what
- 1:06:33you guys do. Thank you again, It's thank you
- 1:06:36to to have some of your caliber on here.
- 1:06:38I mean, a national voice who lots, you know, thousands and
- 1:06:42thousands of people probably heard you and now they, they
- 1:06:45might be able to connect that face to the voice because
- 1:06:48sometimes again, with announcers, right, unless you're
- 1:06:50walking through, you know, for people who are listening on pit
- 1:06:53Rd. TV or XR events or whatever it's
- 1:06:55called now you know, all these things, right, like they might,
- 1:06:59you might be over in North Carolina or whatever and they're
- 1:07:01in California. They'll never maybe have a
- 1:07:03chance to see you, but you never know.
- 1:07:05I mean, now they can maybe say, hey, that's that guy, right?
- 1:07:08So. Hey, and I know I, I mentioned
- 1:07:10anxiety, but if you see me at the racetrack, please come up,
- 1:07:12introduce yourself. I'd love to talk to you.
- 1:07:15Any question. I'm very approachable.
- 1:07:16So yeah, I I just love our fans and our drivers, that's for
- 1:07:19sure. Well, again, thank you for
- 1:07:21everything that you do. Again, one of the top voices in
- 1:07:24the nation and I'm excited to see what you get to do next.
- 1:07:26And you just never know, right? You know, the doors are always
- 1:07:29open and you're opening a lot of them.
- 1:07:30But again, when you have the skill set that you do, there are
- 1:07:35a lot of traps who would be very lucky to have you even just be
- 1:07:38there. So, so again, thank you,
- 1:07:40everything Will, for what you do and thank you for helping our
- 1:07:43veterans through the different causes that you work with.
- 1:07:45So I'll be sure to put in the comments when I get a chance to,
- 1:07:50to connect with you. That way.
- 1:07:51If people want to buy that shirt, again, it's $15 and $5.00
- 1:07:54of it goes towards the organization that helps with
- 1:07:57homeless and all that for our veterans.
- 1:07:59So again, thank you so much, Will.
- 1:08:01Yeah. Thank you, guys.
- 1:08:02Have a great night and thank you again.
- 1:08:05Oh, no, absolutely. Again, thank you.
- 1:08:06And, and I know we're at the top of the hour here, so I do want
- 1:08:09to remind everyone that you're listening to the Monday night
- 1:08:11rewind again, every like and every share that you do helps
- 1:08:15grow this show each and every single week.
- 1:08:17So definitely appreciate that. I know race and Mason's already
- 1:08:20in the in the staging area, so I'm about to bring them on, but
- 1:08:23I do want to do our top of the hour shout outs again.
- 1:08:26You can throttle up with us. Buju and I are back this
- 1:08:28Thursday at 7:00. We preview the schedule of the
- 1:08:31upcoming weekend where we'll talk about the tracks in
- 1:08:34Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, sometimes Ohio on where you can
- 1:08:38go on a Friday, Saturday or especially this week on a Sunday
- 1:08:41between the mini wedges and Corgan oil.
- 1:08:43And then we talked about the storylines heading into the
- 1:08:46weekend. Again, we are just talking with
- 1:08:48Wild Will Greenwell who has the Wild Will Throw Down podcast
- 1:08:52that you can listen to on his website.
- 1:08:56One more quick reminder for to the marketing special for ELHELH
- 1:08:59Detailing. If you want to get a fresh
- 1:09:01detail, come on down to the Sunny Shores or Bridgeman,
- 1:09:04Michigan. While your car's getting
- 1:09:05detailed, you can wave to everyone in Chicago.
- 1:09:07From our shoreline, you can see the Sears Tower.
- 1:09:10Boozoo. I'm not calling it the Willis
- 1:09:12Tower. That's not a thing.
- 1:09:13It is the Sears Tower. I was born in Chicago.
- 1:09:15That's what it is. That's what it'll always be.
- 1:09:17There's no Willis in it, but Sears Tower or officially Willis
- 1:09:20Tower as it's called now, but nobody from Chicago calls it
- 1:09:23that. So anyways, we have Rayson
- 1:09:26Mason, who is now joining us. I'm going to bring him on the
- 1:09:29staging area. So, Mason, again, welcome to the
- 1:09:32Monday Night Rewind. I know you already did one
- 1:09:34podcast, just not too long ago, but now you're on the Monday
- 1:09:37Night Rewind. How are you?
- 1:09:40Yeah, he's on your tour. You're good.
- 1:09:43Yeah. How you feeling?
- 1:09:45I mean, you know, you had all those emotions on Friday.
- 1:09:49So walk us through from the moment you had the checkered
- 1:09:52flag and did the bow. How have you been feeling since
- 1:09:54then? I've been feeling amazing.
- 1:09:56We went up to our cabin, celebrated and just had a bunch
- 1:10:00of fun. So because did you do any
- 1:10:03fishing? Because I know sometimes you
- 1:10:04guys do fishing and other things.
- 1:10:06So what? What is your weekend look like?
- 1:10:09Well, we went after I won, we drove up north, we did some
- 1:10:12fishing, did some riding, and I just got home from that actually
- 1:10:16just to do these podcasts. See.
- 1:10:19Well, I hope we didn't cut your vacation short because you
- 1:10:21definitely after the race that you pulled together on Friday,
- 1:10:25you definitely earned, you know, a little bit of a celebration
- 1:10:28because we were kind of talking about with Will how you've kind
- 1:10:31of been like the silent assassin in a way, right?
- 1:10:33You know, you've seen, you know, Phil, obviously when you've seen
- 1:10:37Bryce win and you just kind of been working your way, find your
- 1:10:40way up. And then now you finally, you
- 1:10:41had the spotlight that night. So how did it feel to to finally
- 1:10:45join in those ranks? It felt amazing.
- 1:10:48I just, I'm just thankful from all all my crew just to get that
- 1:10:53car running and get that car super fast.
- 1:10:58And it Buju, I know you've gone to Kalamazoo a couple times, but
- 1:11:01I think for anyone who's been watching you, Mason, especially
- 1:11:04this year, it's not a surprise. I I'm trying to be neutral as
- 1:11:08like a videographer on the roof. But if Raymond were to tell you
- 1:11:11that I was doing this as you were pushing for the front, like
- 1:11:16I try not to look like I have bias or anything when I
- 1:11:18especially when I've been doing after the races, it's all fair
- 1:11:20game. I go and talk to everybody.
- 1:11:22But as a race, I'm doing this because, you know, I just think
- 1:11:25last year and you'll remember this, you spun out, you know, at
- 1:11:28Kalamazoo and you let out a lot of words and a lot of emotions.
- 1:11:31And obviously that never made it to the public viewing.
- 1:11:34And it won't because that's not right and fair to you.
- 1:11:37But you are very vulnerable and just it's like you let
- 1:11:41everything out, everything that had been building all season.
- 1:11:43And then to see you where you came to this moment in time on
- 1:11:47Friday where you just raced, you know, probably I thought two
- 1:11:50weeks ago you raced your best race and then you did that on
- 1:11:53Friday. It's like for anyone who's been
- 1:11:55paying attention to see your journey, I mean, you've just
- 1:11:57come such a long way. So I know I'm very proud of you
- 1:12:00and what you've done. So that was not that I was
- 1:12:03rooting against other drivers, but I was certainly not not
- 1:12:07rooting for you doing this on the roof, trying also not to
- 1:12:10throw the camera all over the side while doing that.
- 1:12:13So so again, congratulations on such a huge win.
- 1:12:18Thank you. I'm just so thankful for
- 1:12:21everybody helping me. So do you want to talk before we
- 1:12:24get into who are you? Because obviously, you know,
- 1:12:27there might be people watching who don't know who you are
- 1:12:30because they don't come to Kalamazoo or they're not able
- 1:12:32to. So before we get to that
- 1:12:34question, do you want to talk a little bit about who helps get
- 1:12:37you to the races? Who helps get the car put
- 1:12:39together? I know you do your shop talk
- 1:12:42with Bryce that you guys put out a promo video each week to talk
- 1:12:45about the updates. So do you want to talk a little
- 1:12:46bit about who helps you get there and your sponsors?
- 1:12:49I would like to thank DNL Transport, Diamond Auto Sales,
- 1:12:55Next Generation Lawn Care, Amsoil by Midwest Synthetics,
- 1:13:00Mark Pack, Niggle Shipping, FK Rod Ends, All Star Performance,
- 1:13:05Duka Performance, Tony Lacaya Racing, Outerwears, Landrum
- 1:13:12Springs, Sweet Manufacturing, Advanced Property, R&N Sport
- 1:13:16Trucks, Superior Bearings And I would like to thank my Papa, my
- 1:13:20Gigi Bryce, my dad, my mom, Phil, Uncle Ron, Todd Wilcox,
- 1:13:27Bubba, Uncle Jeff, Paige, Morgan, Brian, Aaron and
- 1:13:31Cassidy, Aunt Ginger and Uncle Bill.
- 1:13:36That's a lot to remember. I'm impressed with that because
- 1:13:38I, I don't know that I remembered what I had for dinner
- 1:13:41like 2 weeks ago, but I mean, you just read that pretty
- 1:13:44perfectly. So, so now that you've done that
- 1:13:48and we've and you've thanked everyone because I thought
- 1:13:50that's a good place to start since you brought that up.
- 1:13:52Now let's back up and who's racing Mason for those who don't
- 1:13:57know who you are. I raised in the lower part of
- 1:14:02Michigan and I'm I race weekly comes to Speedway and I'm
- 1:14:06starting to get into a travel series with the outlaw races and
- 1:14:10the reveal the hammer series. And are are you excited to do
- 1:14:15the the Wedge race racing too? Because you haven't done the
- 1:14:18Wedge racing yet, have you? No, this will be my first year
- 1:14:21in an Outlaw. My first race in an Outlaw was
- 1:14:24at Owosso Speedway for the Bob Finley Finley Memorial.
- 1:14:28Earlier this year, right? Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 1:14:31So how did I, I forgot to look at the results, that's my bad.
- 1:14:33I should have looked at the WASA to see how you did.
- 1:14:35But what did you think about racing in the Super light
- 1:14:39models, especially at Owosso where I mean that racing
- 1:14:41obviously brings the best in the business around there too.
- 1:14:44So what? What was going through your mind
- 1:14:46as you took on that challenge? It's way different than just
- 1:14:51template models and other late models.
- 1:14:53You have to be very patient. You have to be quick though
- 1:14:57because you can't stay in the back and put around for too long
- 1:15:01and just very different. So what makes it different?
- 1:15:05Like for those who don't know cars or like fans who like, OK,
- 1:15:08I know that's a template. It's shaped like a NASCAR.
- 1:15:12I know that's a wedge. I know it has the wedge, right.
- 1:15:15So for fans who don't know, when you're in that driver's seat,
- 1:15:17what are some of the different things that you feel as a
- 1:15:19driver? The different things is the
- 1:15:22amount of grip that the cars have.
- 1:15:24Template like models don't have as much grip as the wedge series
- 1:15:29does 'cause they don't have as big as tires, and the wedge
- 1:15:33series can have different kind of motors than the template
- 1:15:37series and all the other serieses.
- 1:15:41And So what has been the biggest challenge because we were
- 1:15:43talking with Will before the show because he read up on you
- 1:15:46and he wanted to know like who you were and he was going to
- 1:15:49stay and hang out. But then his partner that he
- 1:15:52does his podcast with is going out of town.
- 1:15:54So they had to, as soon as he got off with us, he started
- 1:15:58recording his next podcast. So you felt awful that he
- 1:16:00couldn't stay around, but he looked up, you know, everything
- 1:16:03about you and wanted to know who you are because he was really
- 1:16:05interested in that. So we were telling him that, you
- 1:16:08know, not that long ago, you're a front wheel drive racer and
- 1:16:10you jumped right from front wheel drives into late models.
- 1:16:13So do you want to help fans understand even what that kind
- 1:16:16of jump is going from that front wheel drive right into now
- 1:16:19you're racing a late model with, quite frankly, some of the best
- 1:16:22in the business at Kalamazoo at the time?
- 1:16:24Yeah, front wheel drives and template models are is a pretty
- 1:16:28big difference. The template models, it's rear
- 1:16:31wheel drive. So you have to be like you can't
- 1:16:34just stand in the gas and it's just so different.
- 1:16:39The template models has, it's like not many people, but it's a
- 1:16:44big competition there. And what you know when you're
- 1:16:50growing up, right, Obviously being related to bozos and being
- 1:16:54surrounded by racing and having a lot of family and racing and
- 1:16:57everything. What did you know?
- 1:16:59What did you grow up wanting to race like?
- 1:17:01What were your goals that you had where now maybe you get to
- 1:17:04live some of those goals? Like what did you want to do?
- 1:17:08I want to ever since I was just a little kid watching my grandpa
- 1:17:11go around in the rocket car at Kalamazoo Speedway.
- 1:17:14I just wanted to be a race car driver from then.
- 1:17:18And do you, what are your future goals?
- 1:17:21Like obviously you're doing this right, You're racing the
- 1:17:23Outlaws. But you know, do you, do you
- 1:17:25ever want to find your way to doing like a NASCAR or like an
- 1:17:29ARCA or, you know, do you like what you're doing now and just
- 1:17:32kind of staying local? I would love to get in the
- 1:17:35NASCAR, that's my dream, getting the NASCAR, win a NASCAR race.
- 1:17:40But my goals for this year is to win a championship at Kamzu
- 1:17:44Speedway and get Ricky of the year at in the revealed Hammer
- 1:17:48Series. And I know Bryce got that what
- 1:17:53last year, right? Yep.
- 1:17:55So there's going to be noise for really quick OOP.
- 1:17:59That was bad. But anyways, I'm getting that
- 1:18:01ready. I'm going to hide it for now
- 1:18:03because I want you to kind of walk us through that here in
- 1:18:05just a little bit. I know Buju had a question and I
- 1:18:07stomped on him really quick, but I was doing that.
- 1:18:09But I'm like, I wanted to warn you, I, I, we were talking to
- 1:18:12Will and I forgot to get that ready.
- 1:18:13So that's my fault, production manager fault.
- 1:18:16But Buju, what was your question?
- 1:18:18So Lewis was talking about you being from a racing family, you
- 1:18:20obviously grew up in Kalamazoo and tracks around Kalamazoo.
- 1:18:24And now with you racing and still being so young, you're out
- 1:18:26there with these guys that you grew up watching.
- 1:18:28So what are some of the names that you're out there racing
- 1:18:30with now that when you're when you see that car out there, you
- 1:18:33still have that moment? It's like, man, that's kind of
- 1:18:34cool that I'm racing with so and so now instead of watching them.
- 1:18:37Well, obviously my Uncle Phil, Buddy Head, Jeff Ganis and Jared
- 1:18:45Blanchard and all them. That's awesome.
- 1:18:50Who have you always wanted to race against that you haven't
- 1:18:53had a chance to race against yet?
- 1:18:55Or when you've got to race against them?
- 1:18:58You kind of felt like you had to pinch yourself.
- 1:19:00Like, man, I used to just watch you from the stands, from the
- 1:19:03Pederia, and now I'm literally like lined up next to you.
- 1:19:06I'm in the same race with you. I always wanted to.
- 1:19:09I always wanted to race against my grandpa, but when we did get
- 1:19:13to race each other at Corgan Oil Speedway, he whooped my butt.
- 1:19:18That time there, you know, you never know, right?
- 1:19:21You know, so other than so other than what about other than
- 1:19:25grandpa, like know who else? Like let's think about Victory
- 1:19:29Lane Last week you had when you after you did your bow and
- 1:19:33everybody's doing hugs. You had Jeff come over, you had
- 1:19:36Brock come over. I mean, there's a lot of
- 1:19:38emotions down in that Victory Lane.
- 1:19:40And So what was it like to have championship drivers even like
- 1:19:43them? Obviously in your family you
- 1:19:44have championship drivers, right?
- 1:19:46But to have people like them come over and show their
- 1:19:50excitement for you. What did that feel like?
- 1:19:53It was amazing. Just I have a bunch of people
- 1:19:56rooting for me and I just can't imagine that many people are
- 1:20:00rooting for me. Well, and that's why I wanted to
- 1:20:03pull this up. So not supposed to have sound.
- 1:20:07So this is just before, right? So I want you to kind of walk us
- 1:20:10through because you're going to see, even though it's a little
- 1:20:14fast, you're going to start to see people in the pit area start
- 1:20:18cheering you on, right? And, and on the trailer, they're
- 1:20:21all jumping up on the trailer. I know you again, my graphic
- 1:20:24kind of blocks some of that out, but they're jumping up on the
- 1:20:27trailer. Again, you'll see the camera
- 1:20:29kind of jerk here in just a few moments when I'm on the roof,
- 1:20:32you know, doing this too. So walk us through all of this.
- 1:20:36Well, I started 5th on the restart that happened and I got
- 1:20:41to the outside and Jared Blanchard and Buddy Head was on
- 1:20:45the inside. Jared Blanchard and Buddy Head
- 1:20:48got together and I saw a hole on the outside.
- 1:20:50I took it and then I after I got past them two, I ducked to the
- 1:20:56inside past Zachary Maynard and just led the race from there.
- 1:21:01When I know I'm going to call you the battery killer, just so
- 1:21:06you know because so a few weeks ago, so Mason had an onboard
- 1:21:10camera all last year, no issues year before no issues.
- 1:21:14Few weeks ago he has a camera. Guess what happened Buju to the
- 1:21:18battery inside. Gone dead.
- 1:21:21It no. It no.
- 1:21:23It blew up. It exploded so it got fat
- 1:21:27inside, so I put it too far back in the car.
- 1:21:30So last week, not last week, the week before, no issues.
- 1:21:33I moved it up a little bit more air to get to it last Friday,
- 1:21:37put it, I thought, in the right spot.
- 1:21:40Mason. Guess what happened after
- 1:21:41Sabrina turned it on? You got about a minute and a
- 1:21:44half before died and I was sitting in the parking lot at
- 1:21:49Love's because I'm getting ready to post that because I'm excited
- 1:21:52for you again. I just so you know, I don't know
- 1:21:54if Phil told you, but I had tears up on the roof myself
- 1:21:57because again, I just thought of that moment last year where you
- 1:22:00spun out. You had all these emotions.
- 1:22:02You had all these things. I and I came up to you that next
- 1:22:05week you might remember and I said, Mason, come on, like
- 1:22:09you're good. You got to remember you're good
- 1:22:11and you can do this right? And we had that conversation
- 1:22:13because I saw all those emotions.
- 1:22:15Well, so I go to post the damn thing.
- 1:22:18It's a minute something. I texted Sabrina going the
- 1:22:21camera. So I get home.
- 1:22:24Fat battery. So that's two cameras.
- 1:22:26Now that Mason's just so fast that he's going through all my
- 1:22:29GoPro batteries at a lightning speed.
- 1:22:32So he's getting camera #7 again, because he had luck with that
- 1:22:36one. And I know that's a brand new
- 1:22:37battery. Camera 7 went to someone else
- 1:22:40last week just because of my pattern in the pit area.
- 1:22:43But I'm like, I not only do I feel bad because then we didn't
- 1:22:47get the onboard camera view of him doing that.
- 1:22:50Least Jared Blanchard's was working and behind.
- 1:22:52So you can still watch you win the race from Jared's point of
- 1:22:55view. But I'm like, come on.
- 1:22:57And Sabrina felt bad And she's like, what did I do?
- 1:22:59I said the camera, the battery. He's just so fast this year that
- 1:23:02he keeps going through my GoPro batteries here.
- 1:23:04But but at least we have this. So now walk us through this
- 1:23:07moment because this is what I wanted to show on the onboard
- 1:23:10camera as you're doing this. Walk us through this when Andy
- 1:23:14Bozell, I'll back it up just a little bit because I know we
- 1:23:15were talking and I was venting on why you haven't seen your
- 1:23:18footage yet. It's because you keep going
- 1:23:19through my GoPro batteries here. So Andy Bozell junior brings up
- 1:23:25the flag. This is a Kyle Busch flag.
- 1:23:27So do you want to talk a little bit about this and what it was
- 1:23:29like, especially after the tragedy last week to drive with
- 1:23:33that one? Well we found this cow Bush flag
- 1:23:38in my grandpa's house and I wanted to bring it to the track
- 1:23:41and hang it up. And I was like if I win I want
- 1:23:44to take this track, this flag around the track.
- 1:23:46And once I won, my 2 uncles brought the flag to me and put
- 1:23:51it in my hand and I just brought it around the track.
- 1:23:56And again, this is where you have a whole gathering of people
- 1:23:59on the front stretch, which you can't see yet.
- 1:24:01Cuz obviously I'm focusing on you and going through crying on
- 1:24:04the roof, you know, having all these emotions myself.
- 1:24:08Because I just know, again, like I said, I, you know, with you
- 1:24:11having an on board camera, I've gotten to see you, you know, at
- 1:24:15some moments where you were just letting out all these emotions
- 1:24:17that obviously, like I said, no one else sees.
- 1:24:20You know, I would never put that up publicly cuz that that's not
- 1:24:23fair. You know, I'm not going to do
- 1:24:24that to a driver, but in this case, you know, that was going
- 1:24:30through my mind like, you know, each week you've gotten better
- 1:24:32this year. And then to have this moment to
- 1:24:35have all these people, like I said on the trailers, they were
- 1:24:38going crazy. As you're getting past, you
- 1:24:40might have seen the camera jerk a little bit like I talked
- 1:24:43about, because I'm sitting there, you know, waving you
- 1:24:45forward like go, go, go, go. You know, the the whole opens
- 1:24:49right? And you did take it, but it's
- 1:24:51one of those it's like, I just know what you've worked for to
- 1:24:54do this and have this moment. So it's like, you know, when the
- 1:24:57moment and opportunity's there and it's right, it's like, man,
- 1:24:59you just want that person to get what they've been working hard
- 1:25:02for and thankfully you got it. And again, that's not against
- 1:25:05any other driver, right, You know, I but just for you to have
- 1:25:10that moment. That was incredible.
- 1:25:12And again, this is you can't see in the frame yet booze you, but
- 1:25:15there's at least 20 other people on the other side.
- 1:25:18You did the Kyle Busch bow and now everyone's going to start
- 1:25:23coming in. So what do you think?
- 1:25:28Again, what emotions are you going through as you watch this
- 1:25:31back? I was like, holy crap, I just
- 1:25:35won this race. And did you know at that time
- 1:25:38that you were the youngest in Kalamazoo history to win the
- 1:25:41Late Model race? No, I did not know that.
- 1:25:45So for those who are watching, we were talking again with Will
- 1:25:49a little bit about you let people know who are watching,
- 1:25:54Like I know Pitbull racing, That's Ralph.
- 1:25:57He's done at New Paris, Benny Miller's over at Spring Court,
- 1:25:59Corgan Oil, Owasso, that area. So you know, some may not know.
- 1:26:03So how for those who don't know, how old are you?
- 1:26:07I'm 14. So 14 youngest late model winner
- 1:26:14in Kalamazoo history. So this is been the top division
- 1:26:17for several years now, especially his Outlaw Super late
- 1:26:21Miles were more specialized. But again, in this division you
- 1:26:24had Jared Blanchard, you had Buddy Head right there who is
- 1:26:27chasing down for victory. You had Lane Head chasing down
- 1:26:31for victory. You had, of course, Maynards and
- 1:26:33Maynards are good anywhere they go.
- 1:26:35So again, you just look at the talent and this race that you
- 1:26:38were going against and you do that on a weekly basis.
- 1:26:42That's not like a special show. There's no extra money.
- 1:26:45That's our weekly late model class that you get to go
- 1:26:48against. And so, you know, what do you
- 1:26:51feel like? You know, you said you want to
- 1:26:53win a championship this year. So you know, for you, what are
- 1:26:56your goals each Friday night when you get to the track that's
- 1:26:59going to ultimately help you achieve what you want to achieve
- 1:27:03later on this year? My goal when I get to the track
- 1:27:06is just a whoop, everybody's butt and win that race.
- 1:27:12Well, and you can say, well, I saw how my grandpa did it, so I
- 1:27:14know what it looks like and what it feels like.
- 1:27:16So you know when you get out there and again, you like I
- 1:27:18said, you've been impressive this year.
- 1:27:20But Buju, what kind of questions do you have for Mason?
- 1:27:22Because I know you get to be the fan side more so you don't get a
- 1:27:26chance to always interact with the drivers of Kalamazoo.
- 1:27:29So you know, what are questions that you have?
- 1:27:31So Lewis mentioned earlier the tough moment you had in the race
- 1:27:33earlier that maybe slipped through your hands and you come
- 1:27:36from such a racing family. Who's maybe the person that you
- 1:27:39go to that calms you down in those moments where you're
- 1:27:41doubting yourself or you're frustrated and you do get talked
- 1:27:44to? Who's the person that you lean
- 1:27:45on? Everybody, every, everybody at
- 1:27:48my trailer just believes in me. They keep me motivated and I'm
- 1:27:53just so thankful for all of them.
- 1:27:57And you mentioned that you're, you've been looking forward to
- 1:28:00look racing with your grandpa. I've been a big fan of your
- 1:28:02grandpa since I was younger than you.
- 1:28:05So is that a realistic possibility you thinking and
- 1:28:07your grandpa are going to race door to door again?
- 1:28:09I know you've done it before, but is that going to happen
- 1:28:11again this year or sometime soon?
- 1:28:13Hopefully it'll happen this year again.
- 1:28:15Hopefully he gets in the Lane Automotive 59 car and races me
- 1:28:19again at Kalamazoo Speedway. Is that is that the number one
- 1:28:23goal right now? Beat Grandpa.
- 1:28:25Yeah. I appreciate the honesty.
- 1:28:29It would be too if I was racing late models.
- 1:28:30Your grandpa's a legend, so fair enough.
- 1:28:33What are some other goals that I I know you won the championship
- 1:28:35this year. You want to race with grandpa.
- 1:28:37You said NASCAR, maybe some other big races in the area that
- 1:28:40you'd like to add to your resume.
- 1:28:41You've got the first one under your belt, so maybe looking
- 1:28:44forward, you got a lot of wins coming.
- 1:28:45What are some big ones that you want to check off the list?
- 1:28:48Well, I would love to just like win at least five races this
- 1:28:54this year and yeah, that's it. I don't really no other races
- 1:28:58that I could really want to win that much.
- 1:29:02Fair enough. How far is the competition
- 1:29:04between you and Bryce? How much trash talk do you and
- 1:29:05Bryce go back go? Back not that much trash talk.
- 1:29:09We just, we just make each other motivated and yeah.
- 1:29:15Fair enough, fair enough. There's a lot of trash talk in
- 1:29:17my garage, so I thought maybe you and Bryce might.
- 1:29:18Be the same. That's a Davis thing though, you
- 1:29:22guys. And then when you go out and,
- 1:29:26and you know, you bang and bump along each other, it's like
- 1:29:30that's just the Davis family doing Davis family things.
- 1:29:32Makes it fun though for the fans.
- 1:29:35One more question come from that racing family and Lewis talked
- 1:29:38about the accomplishments that family has and Bryce has some
- 1:29:40wins under his belt and and being so young maybe you
- 1:29:43shouldn't feel pressure, but did you feel pressure to get into
- 1:29:46Victory Lane and get that win under your belt even being such
- 1:29:49a young age? Well, after I won, after I got
- 1:29:53third at that one race, I was like, I know I could win, I know
- 1:29:57I can win and then the next week I go and win.
- 1:30:00Is that the time you felt? Is that when you felt like your
- 1:30:03confidence really switched over? Is like from I'm just.
- 1:30:06I'm on the field and I'm learning until I can win a late
- 1:30:09model race. Yeah, after that race I was just
- 1:30:11like, holy crap, this car was so fast.
- 1:30:14I know I could win. Fair enough.
- 1:30:17When we talked about that Buju, what was it last Thursday,
- 1:30:20right? We were talking about how well
- 1:30:22Mason was doing. I know it was on one of the
- 1:30:24shows that I said, man, he's just coming along and and you
- 1:30:27just feel like, man, that moment's coming and then you did
- 1:30:30it right. And they always say the first
- 1:30:32one is the hardest. One of the questions that Will
- 1:30:35had is, you know, he said, was that his first late model win?
- 1:30:40And I said that's his first late model win, But we couldn't
- 1:30:42remember if that was your first win ever, like feature win ever.
- 1:30:45So is that your first feature win, or do you have other
- 1:30:48feature wins under your belt? That's my first ever win, yeah.
- 1:30:51And. That's kind of what we're
- 1:30:52talking about, I said. I don't feel like he had one in
- 1:30:55the front wheel drives, but I again, I my race pass wasn't
- 1:30:58loading for me earlier when I went to look and then I forgot
- 1:31:01to check it again one more time just to do a double check.
- 1:31:03That's what I like about my race pass.
- 1:31:05You can find just about anything you want on there.
- 1:31:07But said I was pretty sure it's his first overall win and then
- 1:31:10again in the top division at Kalamazoo.
- 1:31:14That's well known. I mean, Will's not been to
- 1:31:15Kalamazoo yet, but as he mentioned during our interview,
- 1:31:18you know, he watches the highlights and see what it goes
- 1:31:20on. So, so now you're going into
- 1:31:23this Friday, do you feel like there's now a target on your
- 1:31:27back that you had that first win, or do you feel like you're
- 1:31:30just going to go do your thing and try not to put pressure on
- 1:31:35yourself because now you've done it?
- 1:31:37Well, I'm obviously going to go try to win another race, but I'm
- 1:31:42just going to try to get up in points, get to the front so I
- 1:31:45can get more points and try to win that championship.
- 1:31:49Do you feel like there's pressure now?
- 1:31:52Not really, no. Because sometimes, right, I
- 1:31:56booze you, I saw your face, right?
- 1:31:57And sometimes that happens right when you get that first one.
- 1:32:00Sometimes you see drivers push then because they feel like, OK,
- 1:32:03I've done it once now I got to do it again and do it again and
- 1:32:06do it again. And you know, you can sometimes
- 1:32:08that pressure just builds and you, and you may not always
- 1:32:11think about it, but then you start overdriving or start doing
- 1:32:14things that you didn't do before.
- 1:32:15So that's why I asked if you're if you're feeling the pressure
- 1:32:18yet. No, I'm not feeling much much
- 1:32:21pressure. So what's something that grandpa
- 1:32:24has told you? Because he has a lot of wisdom,
- 1:32:27I have started to quote some of the things he's told me.
- 1:32:30So you know, what are what are some of his lessons that he's
- 1:32:35passed on to you that you keep with you, especially in the car
- 1:32:39while you're. Racing well, just never give up.
- 1:32:43Even if you get tired, just keep pushing through.
- 1:32:48Well, that's he's told me, you know you can sleep plenty when
- 1:32:51you're dead, so that's good to know.
- 1:32:55And same ballpark there. Yeah, with the, I literally told
- 1:32:59my super shoe with the resume that he has, who's going to
- 1:33:01argue with him? So you know, like, so when I'm,
- 1:33:04you've heard me say that too on the show Boozoo and I'm like,
- 1:33:06I'm tired. But Andy Bozell says, you know,
- 1:33:08and I figure Andy Bozell says it then then that's like, that's
- 1:33:13the truth. That's the Bible we live by.
- 1:33:15So again, I know there's a lot of respect for your family.
- 1:33:18So as you think about now, your next Late Model race is coming
- 1:33:24up because you're going to Ken Ross this weekend, right?
- 1:33:27Yep. So do you want to talk a little
- 1:33:28bit about Ken Ross and what you're excited for?
- 1:33:30Because you're racing Friday nights and then you're going
- 1:33:33straight up to Ken Ross overnight.
- 1:33:36So do you want to talk a little bit about what you're excited
- 1:33:39for this weekend, not only racing at Kalamazoo, but then
- 1:33:42going up to the UP to race at Ken Ross?
- 1:33:46I'm I'm excited to make my debut in the Reveal the Hammer series
- 1:33:49at Ken Ross. Have you been there before?
- 1:33:53Nope, never been there. Never.
- 1:33:56Do you have Has anybody in your family been there?
- 1:33:58Because I couldn't remember. Phil has or not?
- 1:34:01No, this is one of the only three asphalt tracks that Phil
- 1:34:04has not raced at in Michigan. Wow, going in with the blind
- 1:34:09brother, that's a challenge. Have you seen the track at all?
- 1:34:13Like I, I had only, how did I remember here?
- 1:34:18Oh, because it revealed the hammer when they announced Ken
- 1:34:20Ross. I'm like, where's Ken Ross?
- 1:34:22So I, you know, got on the old machine and I looked at Ken
- 1:34:26Ross. And so I I'd not heard of the
- 1:34:28track before. So what do you think the
- 1:34:31challenge will be? Since you're going in blind, do
- 1:34:33you sometimes think as a driver that that means no pressure
- 1:34:36because, hey, it is going to it's going to be what it's going
- 1:34:38to be? Or do you think there's more
- 1:34:40pressure because you're like, OK, we have to race at a high
- 1:34:43level the track we've never been to before?
- 1:34:46Well, obviously it's going to be a hard race because we have big
- 1:34:49competitors and it's going to be pretty hard for me because I'm
- 1:34:52not going to be able to get any like practice on Friday because
- 1:34:56I'm racing Friday at Kamazoo. And didn't they say last week
- 1:35:00that that some of them are already going up?
- 1:35:02Because I think Friday they have a practice session at Ken Ross.
- 1:35:05So isn't, aren't you guys doing like two different trips?
- 1:35:07Like you'll be racing, but some of them will already be up at
- 1:35:10Ken Ross. Yes.
- 1:35:11So actually we bought our our trailer up to our cabin and up
- 1:35:20by Ken Ross and my uncle and my grandpa are going to stay there
- 1:35:26through the week. Me and my cousin came back
- 1:35:28because we have school this whole week.
- 1:35:31Yeah, sorry, in Indiana where Buju is, he's in South Bend IN
- 1:35:35is like out like last week. But I know obviously for us
- 1:35:38Muskan people, we going what your your last days are probably
- 1:35:41what next week. My last days in two weeks.
- 1:35:46Two weeks. Oh my goodness.
- 1:35:49Oh future winner should get early Louis early summer pass.
- 1:35:54This is the. Time, you know, this is the time
- 1:35:55of year when I was teaching in a classroom, right?
- 1:35:57Like I knew, OK, we got past Memorial Day, it's four days and
- 1:36:00then we had two and a usually 2 full days and two half days.
- 1:36:04And we would always end next Thursday.
- 1:36:05So, you know, I, this was the countdown for teachers.
- 1:36:08So that's why I was asking because every, every county's a
- 1:36:11little different. And I know they had a few more
- 1:36:13snow days up there than what what we did down here too.
- 1:36:15But but Mason, other than than that, when you think back down
- 1:36:21the road to your first win, what are some of the lessons that you
- 1:36:26want to take from this first win that you want to remember now
- 1:36:30going forward? Well, I want to remember my
- 1:36:33first win as the hardest win because it's always the hardest.
- 1:36:37And I've always been told just because you won doesn't mean you
- 1:36:42have to get cocky. Yes, we've seen that too,
- 1:36:46Boozoo, right, like you kind of see that moment again and I
- 1:36:49think in your in your pit stall, they're not going to allow you
- 1:36:52to get cocky. You know that there's a very
- 1:36:54professional organization right there who again, they've all won
- 1:36:59at the highest level. So when you think of all the
- 1:37:01mentors around you, I mean they've all done it at that top
- 1:37:05level. Now you and Bryce her that
- 1:37:07future generation who's starting to take over the reins and
- 1:37:09moving on up that I don't I don't think they're going to let
- 1:37:12you get cocky. You know, they're going to keep
- 1:37:13you pretty grounded because again, it, you know, I think of
- 1:37:17there's champions in this area who, you know, they have really
- 1:37:20great seasons. And then there's a season that
- 1:37:22comes around that it's just rough and everything's rough and
- 1:37:25nothing works and the car breaks down and you have all these
- 1:37:28things going on that it can be kind of humbling.
- 1:37:31You know, where you're like, man, I was at the top of the top
- 1:37:33and now, now I feel like I'm just scratching to get a tire to
- 1:37:36not go flat the next time I'm out or whatever.
- 1:37:39So, so with that, you know, at the same time too, when you
- 1:37:44think of now Rookie of the year that you're going for and reveal
- 1:37:48the hammer, what are your goals then to accomplish that and
- 1:37:52reveal the hammer? And reveal the hammer.
- 1:37:55I've obviously trying to beat my cousin but he's whooping my butt
- 1:37:59in that class. For now, yeah, no, now.
- 1:38:05So let's say you and Bryce, right both line up with whatever
- 1:38:11car you desire. Front wheel, drive lane model,
- 1:38:15shopping cart, whatever you want to do. 1 lap.
- 1:38:20Actually, let's make a 2 lap. It's a spectatories 2 laps.
- 1:38:23Who's winning? Me.
- 1:38:26So what does it take to win that?
- 1:38:28Because again, you're going against Bryce.
- 1:38:29So, you know, what do you have to, what do you know about Bryce
- 1:38:32that you have to use against him to win?
- 1:38:35I don't really know. He's all I know is he's a great
- 1:38:39driver. Now your preference, you guys do
- 1:38:43choose come madhouse, inside, outside.
- 1:38:46How do you like to plan your race as you go through with the
- 1:38:49Madhouse? Well, like that with the choose,
- 1:38:52I like to just sit back a little bit and watch if there's see if
- 1:38:56there's a hole, if there's a hole in the outside, if people
- 1:38:58are fast on the outside, then I'll go to the outside and
- 1:39:01obviously if that's on the inside, I go to the inside.
- 1:39:05I've always wondered that because sometimes their drivers
- 1:39:09have built switch it every single time they do the choose
- 1:39:11cone. I'm like, I mean, it makes sense
- 1:39:13the strategy, but sometimes you've seen them overcorrect
- 1:39:17strategy where you're like, oh boy, they just got sucked in
- 1:39:19that wind tunnel and they went all the way back.
- 1:39:21So 'cause you never know Kalamazoo, things happen so
- 1:39:24fast, especially coming out of turn 2.
- 1:39:25It's like that's that seems where people fall off if they
- 1:39:29make that mistake. But you know, for people who
- 1:39:32don't know Kalamazoo over in race Kalamazoo, you know, what
- 1:39:34would you how would you describe racing at Kalamazoo to someone
- 1:39:37who's coming to the first time you do it every week, But there
- 1:39:40are people who have never been there, never racer.
- 1:39:42So how would you describe that to people, what it's like racing
- 1:39:45at Kalamazoo? There's no really track like it.
- 1:39:48It's just like a, it's like really different than other
- 1:39:53tracks. You have to drive every corner
- 1:39:57different. You can't drive the corner the
- 1:39:59same. What corner's the trickiest?
- 1:40:03The trickiest? I don't.
- 1:40:07I don't really think a corner's that tricky from the other one,
- 1:40:10but probably 3 and 4 for me. What are the tracks have you
- 1:40:14raced so far, Mason? I've raced at Kalamazoo
- 1:40:17Speedway, Owosso Speedway, Corgan Oil, new.
- 1:40:23No, I have raced at Gilsberg and yeah, that's it.
- 1:40:29OK. And what's your favorite that
- 1:40:33again, I know you race the Kalamazoo every week, but it
- 1:40:35doesn't have to be your favorite if you like other ones like so
- 1:40:39what's your favorite that stands out to you that you just like
- 1:40:42either being at as a fan or racing?
- 1:40:45Well, the most one I like racing at is Kalamazoo, but I just like
- 1:40:48any racetrack I get to go to. That's good because quarter mile
- 1:40:53racing and 3/8 mile racing sometimes that right, That's the
- 1:40:56difference too, like quarter miles where I got started as a
- 1:40:59media person. So I always kind of like that
- 1:41:01tight bull ring racing. But you know, the three eight
- 1:41:03you can spread out a little bit because you raced at Spring
- 1:41:07Court too, didn't you? Or not yet.
- 1:41:09Oh yes, I've raced at Springport.
- 1:41:11Because that 3/8 is not the same as any other 3/8 in the area.
- 1:41:14That's, you know, that paper clip?
- 1:41:16Man, I'm so glad that Donnie has that back because I, I cannot
- 1:41:19wait, even if I'm just a fan, to get back to Springport.
- 1:41:22I love, love that track. What did you think about
- 1:41:25Springport? Because again, that that banking
- 1:41:27at Springport's way different than a lot of other places.
- 1:41:30Yeah, it's, it's a special track.
- 1:41:33The corners, they're kind of the same.
- 1:41:35It's just you have to run the specific line to be fast there.
- 1:41:41Now, Buju, I know there is something else that you're going
- 1:41:43to ask. I didn't want to cut it off.
- 1:41:45What's another track that you want to run at some point?
- 1:41:47What's a big one on your bucket list?
- 1:41:50And goal I want to run at and probably Toledo or Winchester.
- 1:41:55Oh yeah, Winchester would be a whole another animal to I mean
- 1:41:59those bankings would make Springport look like a speed
- 1:42:01bump in Walmart parking lot that just standing.
- 1:42:05I've seen so many pictures. I've never been to Winchester
- 1:42:08Mason but seen pictures of Winchester.
- 1:42:10I'm like, and I stood at the top of Bristol and and I think some
- 1:42:14people have said that Winchester makes even Bristol look a little
- 1:42:17tame. So I'm like, I was tired of
- 1:42:19climbing up to Bristol's top bank there.
- 1:42:21You know, that would John Trudell and Andrew Ritter, you
- 1:42:25know, we all climbed to the top there and I went, I'm a little
- 1:42:27tired. This was steep.
- 1:42:31Now, is there a track that you've gone to as a fan?
- 1:42:34Like you talked about Toledo and all that and Winchester.
- 1:42:36Is there a track that you've gone to as a fan that you think
- 1:42:39back that maybe you're like, and I want to get there and race
- 1:42:41sometime too because I know. Or even a track that doesn't
- 1:42:45exist anymore that you've wanted to try that or you wish you
- 1:42:48could have tried. I don't really know of tracks
- 1:42:52that don't exist. The one track that I haven't
- 1:42:55raced at in the Michigan and Indiana area is New Paris.
- 1:43:00Oh yeah, and we need to get you down to New Paris.
- 1:43:05They don't do yeah, they don't do template racing there.
- 1:43:09So you but you will be reveal the hammer.
- 1:43:11So you'll be able to race there for the Sizzler.
- 1:43:14Yeah, I'll be racing the Sizzler, I'm pretty sure.
- 1:43:17Oh, I hope so, because I'll be at the Sizzler.
- 1:43:19So that would be, oh, so here's a question from Phil, where did
- 1:43:28give it the beans come from? Did give it the beans came from
- 1:43:32actually last year, my car last year, Phil actually used to race
- 1:43:37and he used to race it at Galesburg Speedway.
- 1:43:40And when he was about to go out to the track, I said give it the
- 1:43:43beans and he's like, he's like, what does that mean?
- 1:43:47I said it means go fast. And that race he won.
- 1:43:52Oh, so now that just stays right because it's almost like Bryson
- 1:43:56isn't there like Skittles after he races or wins, isn't there
- 1:44:00like him and Billy Shannon did like Skittles and all that kind
- 1:44:03of deal. Yeah, last year Billy Shannon
- 1:44:06and him had a Skittle War. They would put Skittles in each
- 1:44:09other's scars. And after, after Bryce won the
- 1:44:12championship, Billy put a bunch of Skittles in his driver's seat
- 1:44:17and we went to, we went to Springport and the guy, the guy
- 1:44:20that was racing behind Bryce said there were Skittles popping
- 1:44:23out from behind his car. Leave it to Billy Shannon to
- 1:44:29come up with that. Right.
- 1:44:30I remembered that because I was videoing and there were Skittles
- 1:44:33going all over the place and and I'm like, where did they get all
- 1:44:37the Skittles? I mean, there's like hundreds of
- 1:44:39Skittles. It wasn't like a little skittle
- 1:44:41bath. It was hundreds of Skittles.
- 1:44:43I thought, man, now, so give it the beans, right?
- 1:44:47You know, that's kind of like, do you have any superstitions
- 1:44:50then? Do you have anything that you do
- 1:44:52that you have to do the same routine before you go race or
- 1:44:55you have to buckle up the same way or put on your race gloves
- 1:44:58the same way or what? Whatever a superstition may be.
- 1:45:01Not really just my. I've always said give it the
- 1:45:04beans because that one race. Yeah, but that's why I'm asking
- 1:45:09because you know when you say when you have something like
- 1:45:11that, it's almost like, oh, hey, that worked this time.
- 1:45:13I've had that with T-shirts before where not that I was on
- 1:45:18the softball field, but I, you know, the team that I was
- 1:45:20following and they were going to state championships.
- 1:45:22I as they were winning each time I had to, I did the same things
- 1:45:25even though I had no, no impact on anything that that team did.
- 1:45:29But that was my part as a fan. I did my part and they won this
- 1:45:33championship. So I'm like, it must have
- 1:45:35worked. Not that again, I had anything
- 1:45:36to do with it. But you know, those
- 1:45:39superstitions. Sometimes I do have things where
- 1:45:40I'm superstitious. I do that with my video camera
- 1:45:43after it fell off the roof at New Paris last year.
- 1:45:46I do things a little different. So I have my own superstitions
- 1:45:48with that so it doesn't fall off the roof anymore.
- 1:45:50And so far I have been lucky. So no superstitions.
- 1:45:55What about you know, do you do any like joking around or
- 1:45:58something to keep you loose at the track because you always
- 1:46:01seem to just be happy and a good mood ready to go.
- 1:46:04Like what keeps you loose? Well, my cousin's always
- 1:46:07cracking jokes, so yeah. And Phil's always cracking jokes
- 1:46:12to me. We just always are having a good
- 1:46:14time. Because it doesn't, I mean, you
- 1:46:17could tell when like things are getting serious in that pit area
- 1:46:20because they definitely have a game face on.
- 1:46:22And it's it's like, OK, I'm not going to stop in the pit now
- 1:46:24because game mode has been engaged.
- 1:46:26But you know, beyond that, I mean, even after your win last
- 1:46:31week, you're in the pits being Mason, right?
- 1:46:32You're just joking around. Obviously you were the center of
- 1:46:36attention for a lot of people because they wanted to come
- 1:46:38congratulate you again. I know you can't quite see it in
- 1:46:41all the video, but people are jumping up and down on their
- 1:46:43trailers as you're going, especially on that Bozell
- 1:46:45trailer where they're jumping down and cheering.
- 1:46:48But you're just still you. And I thought that was pretty
- 1:46:50cool too, where you just, you didn't look, didn't look like
- 1:46:55you were stressed or, you know, overwhelmed or anything.
- 1:46:57You just had the same smile that you always do, the same kind of,
- 1:47:01you know, easy going. So how do you, how do you keep
- 1:47:04yourself so grounded like that, especially when you're racing in
- 1:47:07such a fast car? You know, other than the joking
- 1:47:10and all that, like, how do you keep yourself in the moment?
- 1:47:14Because I just like to stay humble.
- 1:47:16Don't like. I like to have fun and just joke
- 1:47:21around, but when it's time to get serious, I like to get
- 1:47:23really serious and get to work. What's your game face look like?
- 1:47:28I don't know, I can't wait for. Line right now when I'm right.
- 1:47:35Yeah, Yeah. So other than that there,
- 1:47:39there's one other thing that I wanted to ask because again, you
- 1:47:41know, for a lot of our audience who watches, they may not get a
- 1:47:45chance to watch you because they're at other tracks on a
- 1:47:47Friday night or they don't get a chance to come to Kalamazoo.
- 1:47:50And there's one other with that. Oh, music.
- 1:47:54So bam, you know, the there's a couple people who have different
- 1:47:58musics that they listen to that kind of get them.
- 1:48:00So do you do any kind of music or any kind of thing you know
- 1:48:04that gets you motivated or pumped up ready to go on race
- 1:48:07day? Well, I don't really listen to
- 1:48:10music before I go race, but if we have a good race day and on
- 1:48:15my way back from the track my cousin likes to play a white
- 1:48:18girl bank white girl bangers on the way home from the track.
- 1:48:23Like like Party in the USA or last Friday night?
- 1:48:27That's good taste. So that what I'm hearing is that
- 1:48:31we need to get Joel the next time Bryce wins a race to play
- 1:48:35party in the US. That's why not the other music
- 1:48:39that he plays that he's ready for, and I haven't, that's who
- 1:48:42we haven't seen tonight in the chat yet is Joel.
- 1:48:44So I'm going to fire him just so he knows that.
- 1:48:46But but that's what we're going to have to pass this on to Joel
- 1:48:49next time Bryce wins party in the USA, That's going to have to
- 1:48:54be just to throw him off a little bit there.
- 1:48:58Now. So you don't really listen to
- 1:48:59music and race tape, but you do have a tradition afterwards that
- 1:49:02everyone part of the team does on Friday nights just before you
- 1:49:06guys pack up and get ready to go.
- 1:49:07So do you want to talk a little bit about your Fireball Friday
- 1:49:09tradition that the that the Pit has?
- 1:49:13Me and my cousin don't do it because we're underage, but
- 1:49:16every time we have a good race day or it's Friday night they
- 1:49:19like to do that. It's just your tradition that we
- 1:49:21only do every week. But you could do it with that
- 1:49:25Gatorade or something. That's what I do.
- 1:49:28Yeah, yeah, because obviously disclaimer, right, we're since
- 1:49:31we're on public Airways because we're underage, we can't do
- 1:49:34that. But that I mean when I'm packing
- 1:49:36things up on the roof, I hear you guys.
- 1:49:38I mean it's loud and clear from that area of Fireball Friday.
- 1:49:41I'm like, Oh, they did it again and I didn't get a chance down
- 1:49:43to because I'm, I just need to leave my stuff on the roof and
- 1:49:46get down really quick and be like, if it blows off, it's OK.
- 1:49:49It's done it before and lived to tell about it.
- 1:49:51But but other than that, that's where I thought, you know,
- 1:49:53traditions. Do you have any other traditions
- 1:49:55that you guys do on like a race day?
- 1:49:56Or do you have like sometimes if you think about teams, like
- 1:50:00obviously in your family, there's also the sports side
- 1:50:03outside of racing, you know, softball and all these things
- 1:50:06going on. So do you guys do any like team
- 1:50:08dinners or do you have anything that you go to the shop and you
- 1:50:11watch film or video just to prepare for the next week?
- 1:50:15That's like a tradition. Well obviously we use top real
- 1:50:20media racing videos like my grandpa shows me like the lines
- 1:50:24I should use when the videos because the videos are very
- 1:50:27helpful to us racers to show the lines and show how like we
- 1:50:31should be running and all that. Well, that's where you'll see on
- 1:50:36Jared's. I wish I could show yours, but
- 1:50:37you keep going through my battery.
- 1:50:39So you know you're getting camera 7 again, because I know
- 1:50:41that's a brand new battery. And you did third the last time
- 1:50:44you had camera 7. So I already know Friday if you
- 1:50:46want a camera, which usually you do, you're getting #7 because
- 1:50:49we're just not going to play with these batteries anymore.
- 1:50:51I know that's a new battery. I, I, it just came in the mail
- 1:50:54not too long ago. So that's the camera you're
- 1:50:56going to get. Bryce gets 5 and I know that's a
- 1:50:58new camera too, or not a new camera, but new battery.
- 1:51:00So we're just not going to have you blow up my batteries
- 1:51:03anymore. But with Jared Blanchard, so
- 1:51:07when you go to do film study and he's right on you the whole
- 1:51:09time. So you'll get to watch
- 1:51:11everything that you did from that perspective at least.
- 1:51:14So and obviously the overhead video.
- 1:51:17What do you think about the audio?
- 1:51:18I I'm still battling some of the audio like getting it to balance
- 1:51:21out perfectly, but what does the audio help you at all as you're
- 1:51:23watching or you guys muted and just watch the race itself?
- 1:51:26Well, the audio audio actually helps some because like the
- 1:51:30pitch of the exhaust changes the closer you get to the wall.
- 1:51:34Yep, Yep, yeah. And well, and like I said, I'm
- 1:51:38still fighting the audio at Kalamazoo to get it to balance
- 1:51:40just right. I'm, you know, I don't have that
- 1:51:43issue at New Paris, but where Joel has to stand like, OK, I
- 1:51:46still need to balance out his microphone to my microphone.
- 1:51:50So I'm still working on that. But other than that, I mean the
- 1:51:52audio this year I've had a lot of drivers say that it helps
- 1:51:54them kind of know too, you know, what point in the race so they
- 1:51:57can go back in and say, hey, my car was doing this, what lap was
- 1:52:00that? So, so I know that's been
- 1:52:02helpful too, but it's almost 9:00 and you said that you were
- 1:52:06just on vacation and did all those things so and traveled
- 1:52:09back. So I know it's been a long trip
- 1:52:11for you guys and you have a busy week ahead.
- 1:52:13So again, this Friday everyone can see your calendars.
- 1:52:17You Speedway, you'll be racing the template model.
- 1:52:19Then you're driving up on Saturday and doing Reveal the
- 1:52:21Hammer with the Outlaw light model.
- 1:52:24So if you're tired on Saturday, people would understand why
- 1:52:28'cause what was it? A three hour drive. 4 hour
- 1:52:31drive. Up to the our up to the cabin we
- 1:52:35have which we're going to is a three hour drive and then I
- 1:52:39think it's like 2 hours to an hour drive to the.
- 1:52:47Yeah, that that's like driving from where I live to Green Bay
- 1:52:50and then some because it's I'm 4 hours, 4 1/2 hours to Lambeau
- 1:52:54Field. Not that I'm a Packer fan, but.
- 1:52:57That's me to Will Greenwell. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:53:00So, so, yeah, that's a long drive.
- 1:53:02So if you're tired on Friday, people would understand.
- 1:53:04But obviously when you get in the car, you won't be tired.
- 1:53:06So you also said that most you're, you know, you're
- 1:53:09competing for a championship at Kalamazoo.
- 1:53:11You have a goal racing at New Paris this year.
- 1:53:13So the two schedules that fans can follow you at will obviously
- 1:53:18be Kalamazoo. Then reveal the hammer.
- 1:53:20So social media, how can they keep up with everything that
- 1:53:22you're doing? Well, on social media you can
- 1:53:25search up ABR Racing, Bryce Bozo, Bryce Bozo and Mason
- 1:53:31Mexico on Facebook and we will tell you when we're racing what,
- 1:53:34what time the races start and all that.
- 1:53:38Where did the shop talk come from before we let you go?
- 1:53:40Because you guys do your little shop talk that each week where
- 1:53:44you and Bryce kind of go over the results and everything they
- 1:53:46did. So where did that start?
- 1:53:48Well me and Bryce had an idea of like let's tell them how our
- 1:53:51week went so they so we can tell them when to come and how our
- 1:53:55week went. Yep.
- 1:53:57Buju, you're going to ask something.
- 1:53:59Did I cut you off again? No, no, no, no, no.
- 1:54:01OK. You kind of had that movement
- 1:54:03where I cut you off. You're you're talking about him
- 1:54:05being tired on Saturday, I said. As grandpa said, you can sleep
- 1:54:07when you're dead. So send it Saturday too,
- 1:54:11brother. Yeah, that's, I learned that
- 1:54:13lesson. I've kept that lesson with me.
- 1:54:15I'm like, huh, hadn't thought about that before, but I guess
- 1:54:18it makes sense when it comes out.
- 1:54:19But, but again, obviously on social media and you guys have
- 1:54:22been, I mean, that's something Drew Jack and I, he wasn't able
- 1:54:25to make this tonight. But that's what Drew Jack and I
- 1:54:27have talked about before is you guys do an incredible job with
- 1:54:29your social media. You're always promoting the
- 1:54:31tracks where you're going. It's easy for people to know
- 1:54:34where you are. And I mean, even when you're at
- 1:54:37the South Bend auto show, you helped me a lot by helping to
- 1:54:40promote the South Bend auto show.
- 1:54:41And that helped, you know, get a lot of people from the Kalamazoo
- 1:54:44area down, you know, to South Bend because I that, you know,
- 1:54:47part of our goal of being at Kalamazoo is getting that
- 1:54:50exposure for our drivers at a show like that.
- 1:54:52And so I know that was your first show experience and you
- 1:54:56got a trophy on top of that. So before I let you go, let's
- 1:54:59kind of rewind back to March. What did you think about being
- 1:55:03an auto show for the first time and then first time ever you go
- 1:55:06home with the trophy? I thought it was great meeting a
- 1:55:10bunch of fans there. I met this one girl that was a
- 1:55:13Andy Bozell fan since she was like 6 and it it was just so fun
- 1:55:18meeting all the fans. If we go again, you got you guys
- 1:55:21can check it out at South Bend Auto Show and South Bend.
- 1:55:26Yeah, my goal is to each year to have us at the Kalamazoo show.
- 1:55:29And I'm always looking for cars, so I don't know who I'm going to
- 1:55:31be heading up first. It's just always tough because
- 1:55:33that's also during spring break for a lot of people.
- 1:55:35But next year it's mid-april, they moved it to mid-april.
- 1:55:38So I'm like, well, that that won't be spring break, but
- 1:55:40that'll be practice sessions and all these things.
- 1:55:42So I'm like, yeah, we'll see how that goes, you know.
- 1:55:46But again, their market is more show cars and deal not so much
- 1:55:50race cars. We're kind of just in the back
- 1:55:52corner, but but we bring a lot of people.
- 1:55:54So. But again, Mason, I know you had
- 1:55:56that big trip, so I don't want to keep you too much longer.
- 1:55:59We've already kept you 50 minutes here and I know you were
- 1:56:01on just a little bit before that.
- 1:56:03So again, definitely good luck this Friday that that was again
- 1:56:07exciting to watch. I, I even made a post, I don't
- 1:56:11know if anyone showed you it, but I made a post for there's
- 1:56:13not a whole lot of things that make me cry.
- 1:56:15Even though I'm an emotion on my sleeve guy.
- 1:56:17There's not a whole lot of things.
- 1:56:18But when you did that and you pull through and watching all
- 1:56:21the emotions, it's kind of like when Alex Sexton won last year.
- 1:56:24Watching Taylor Sexton jump up and down and her family, their
- 1:56:28family, getting excited for Alex, you know, watching that,
- 1:56:31it's like, you know, when you get to go to weekly track and
- 1:56:33you get to watch people grow you, you know, you have a lot of
- 1:56:36care for people. And so I have a lot of care for
- 1:56:38our drivers at Kalamazoo. And I'm excited when anybody
- 1:56:41wins. But especially, you know, my
- 1:56:43first thought was onboard camera last year when you spun and lit
- 1:56:47out all these emotions to where you are now.
- 1:56:49It's like, I don't know, that just got me all in the fields.
- 1:56:51So not too many people do that. So congratulations, Mason, you,
- 1:56:55you found the red button and I got the waterworks going, but I
- 1:56:58was just so happy for you. And I know hundreds and hundreds
- 1:57:01of other people were too. So again, congratulations on
- 1:57:03your win. Thank you.
- 1:57:06All right, well, we'll definitely let you get going
- 1:57:08because you got school tomorrow. So I know it's a school night
- 1:57:11for you, not for me. I retired from that, so I don't
- 1:57:13have to do that. But again, good luck this this
- 1:57:18Saturday and I'll see you on Friday for sure.
- 1:57:20Thank you. Thank you Mason again.
- 1:57:22We've been talking with Mason racing Mason after his first
- 1:57:26victory ever career victory over at the Kalamazoo Speedway.
- 1:57:31You can see him again this Friday night at the Kalamazoo
- 1:57:33Speedway on Saturday if you want to head up to the UP, he's at
- 1:57:36Ken Ross Speedway racing in the outlaw super light model for the
- 1:57:39second time, which we'll talk about on the Thursday night
- 1:57:42throttle. So you can come and join us on
- 1:57:44Thursday at 7:00 PM as we preview the upcoming weekend of
- 1:57:47events across the area. We'll also include the Ken Ross
- 1:57:50trip just because so many of our drivers from down here are
- 1:57:53heading up. I even think Rich Bowl is
- 1:57:54heading up to Ken Ross or was talking about it.
- 1:57:56So that'll be pretty exciting. So again, Boojie and I are back
- 1:57:59on Thursdays and you've been watching the Monday Night
- 1:58:04Rewind. So Boojie, before we get going,
- 1:58:08we have about 4 minutes or so. Any, any weekend updates that
- 1:58:13you want to highlight? We talked about doing like a
- 1:58:15weekend shout out. So any last shout outs for you?
- 1:58:20Like I said at the beginning of the show, but shout out to
- 1:58:22Angola Speedway for getting the show in as they promised.
- 1:58:25They, they had a very uphill battle on Saturday and they
- 1:58:28battled through it and and made it happen.
- 1:58:31So kudos to them. I had another one and boy did I
- 1:58:35forget it. So oh, Cameron Mccrudden, my
- 1:58:37driver that I sponsored, picked up the first aid feature win on
- 1:58:40Friday. For him, it was a messy feature.
- 1:58:43My God, that wasn't a messy feature.
- 1:58:46That's topic for another day. Yeah, but shout out to Camera
- 1:58:49coming up on top because he's out there sending it.
- 1:58:52Probably happy for the kid. He got his first.
- 1:58:54A feature win. That's always cool.
- 1:58:55Just like Mason. Happened for my What drives was
- 1:58:57that front wheel drives? Is that what he's in?
- 1:58:59Hornets. Hornets Yep Yep Yep see these
- 1:59:02Michigan got your training you know I just.
- 1:59:05I got. You Hornets anymore?
- 1:59:07Although I do at New Paris, but it's still sometimes it feels
- 1:59:09weird because it's like every, all my vocabulary in Michigan is
- 1:59:14front wheel drives or ABC. And then obviously the new Paris
- 1:59:18is a hold out on that and 40 is a hold out on that.
- 1:59:21So, you know, I still have the vocab that I have to use, but
- 1:59:25every now and then I'm like, can we all just switch it?
- 1:59:28You know, I get it though, Every track has their right to do
- 1:59:30their sandbox things. So I'm not I'm not criticizing
- 1:59:33them. It's just from a vocab.
- 1:59:36Like I'm so glad that this year Kalamazoo dropped the Outlaw
- 1:59:40from the Outlaw Limited Late Models.
- 1:59:42Like we just call them limited late models now.
- 1:59:43They're not even Outlaws, even though they are the Outlaw
- 1:59:46style. But yeah.
- 1:59:47That's been that's another ball game too.
- 1:59:49It's limited late models and the different names those have
- 1:59:51around here. That confuses me.
- 1:59:53It's like, what late models am I seeing tonight exactly?
- 1:59:55Yeah. So, yeah.
- 1:59:56And I even this year I just dropped template too.
- 1:59:59I just hit late models and limited late models.
- 2:00:02I thought that's just that's pretty easy.
- 2:00:04You know, that's kind of. You know, because sometimes you
- 2:00:07get them called Sportsman too. So, so that's where that when I
- 2:00:12went to Springport, they called them Sportsman late models, but
- 2:00:16at Kalamazoo they were template late models.
- 2:00:18So I just called, I'm like, let's just make it easy for the
- 2:00:20fans from my graphic standpoint. And everyone's a template late
- 2:00:23model. If you race in this class, it
- 2:00:24just makes, I know there's a difference and I, you know, but
- 2:00:27it just makes it easier. But do you know how many times I
- 2:00:30posted the oh wow, limited late models and I get so many
- 2:00:33comments. How can it be an outlaw and
- 2:00:35limited? And I'm like, I'm just tired of
- 2:00:37it doing this. It let you know it's not a
- 2:00:41super, it's limited, but they look the same.
- 2:00:44How about that? That's the easy way to explain
- 2:00:46it. But again, I know we talked last
- 2:00:49Thursday about Mason and then for him to do what he did on
- 2:00:51Friday. I don't know if you'd had a
- 2:00:53chance to watch the video or not, but that that was that was
- 2:00:57the the pass for the lead. And again, that's right, just
- 2:01:00Sabrina. I texted her right away in the
- 2:01:02lost parking lot. It was raining and I was getting
- 2:01:05the camera and wanted to post that.
- 2:01:07And I went, Sabrina, it's not there.
- 2:01:09And she felt so awful. She's like, well, I turned it
- 2:01:11on. I'm like, I know I have proof
- 2:01:12that you turned it on. And I do want to do a shout out
- 2:01:15again to Sabrina. She's been really the only
- 2:01:20photographer the last couple weeks.
- 2:01:21Kendall's been working a lot of overtime at her other job.
- 2:01:24And so that's limited her being able to come on Fridays.
- 2:01:28That's for Sabrina. You know, she's there to help
- 2:01:30with my onboard cameras. That's, you know, what she comes
- 2:01:32for. And then I make her, you know,
- 2:01:34bring her camera. I always tell her, girl, we need
- 2:01:37to get you opportunities with this camera.
- 2:01:39So bring your camera, take shots as you can.
- 2:01:41But everyone knows your primary responsibility during features
- 2:01:46it you know, to get the on boards on and help collect that.
- 2:01:48Nobody is going to question you if you're not taking photos
- 2:01:51because you're literally there helping with that.
- 2:01:54But she's been doing it all. She's been taking Victory Lane,
- 2:01:57she's been taking action shots, she's been turning on board
- 2:01:59cameras. And then as she gets time goes
- 2:02:02and collects the cameras. And then luckily her boyfriend
- 2:02:05Peter is up top and he helps collect those cameras up top,
- 2:02:10you know, which has been a huge help because they're they're not
- 2:02:12trapped. It's a lot easier for them to
- 2:02:14leave than it is in the infield. So I just want to do another
- 2:02:17shout out to Sabrina. And I hope people are realizing
- 2:02:20and noticing the amount of work and things that she's balancing
- 2:02:23to get not only race photos, but Victory Lane photos, but then to
- 2:02:26manage the onboards. And, you know, I keep telling
- 2:02:30her last, not last week, but the week before I dropped it down to
- 2:02:3315. I'm like, I can't have you
- 2:02:35running around in a sweatshirt. I'm sweating seeing you in a
- 2:02:38sweatshirt and it's hot, right? I can't do that to you.
- 2:02:41That's not fair, right? And so I dropped it down to 15
- 2:02:44last week. I went back to 19 this week.
- 2:02:46We'll probably be back at 19 just because it gets more
- 2:02:49opportunity. And I hate, you know, cutting
- 2:02:52drivers off, especially if I know that I have cameras just
- 2:02:54sitting there. But most people have been
- 2:02:56understanding like it's I got Sabrina and she's managing all
- 2:02:59this. So again, Kendall will be back
- 2:03:02once all of her on all of her overtime is done.
- 2:03:05But you know, making it from Elkhart to Coloma back to
- 2:03:07Kalamazoo by the time races start, you know, it's just it's
- 2:03:11tough with all the construction. So, but in the meantime, that's
- 2:03:15why I wanted to shout out Sabrina because again, she's
- 2:03:18taking on a lot and managing a lot and, and, and hasn't missed
- 2:03:21the camera the, the time that or, or last week missed 1
- 2:03:26camera, but that was my fault because the driver usually races
- 2:03:29a red car, but they're racing a gold car that night.
- 2:03:31So she's not looking for the gold car because you're always
- 2:03:35in the red car. So she did miss one, but that's
- 2:03:37not often. And so the fact that she gets
- 2:03:40all the cameras and none, none of them have left property.
- 2:03:43I just want to do that shout out because she makes it so much
- 2:03:46easier for me to be able to do what I do while she manages that
- 2:03:50part. Because there's just no way at
- 2:03:52Kalamazoo that I'd be able, humanly possible to be able to
- 2:03:55get from the roof down, get them all turned on and back up.
- 2:03:58It's this spring port I was able to do because of where
- 2:04:01everything was situated and there wasn't a lot of obstacles.
- 2:04:04But at Kalamazoo, I got to get down one ladder, get down all
- 2:04:07the steps, come all the way around.
- 2:04:09And now that you know, it's just, it's not, I tried it and I
- 2:04:13almost got trapped down there one time.
- 2:04:15So it's like it's just not mathematically possible.
- 2:04:18So anyways, I hope you have a great rest of your Memorial Day.
- 2:04:23Like my stepdad earlier said, well, happy Memorial Day.
- 2:04:26And I and I at 6:00 AM this morning when I still editing
- 2:04:30stuff, I'm like, I had that random thought, which if you
- 2:04:33love history on The History Channel, they have a 20 part
- 2:04:36World War 2 with Tom Hanks. It's already recording.
- 2:04:39That's what I'm going to be watching tonight, the first 3
- 2:04:40episodes. So once we're done, I'm going to
- 2:04:43watch that and it. Does interest me?
- 2:04:46Yeah, it's from the 21st century perspective too, of looking back
- 2:04:51to how all the events folded with Tom Hanks.
- 2:04:53So again that it's good at 8 O clock.
- 2:04:55So 8-9 and ten are the first 3 episodes and then it's like it's
- 2:04:59a 20 part series. So that's what I'm doing as soon
- 2:05:02as I get off here as I'm watching those.
- 2:05:04Sorry, Monday Night Raw, you'll have to wait.
- 2:05:06But but you know, my Bob had said, well, happy Memorial Day.
- 2:05:10And I kind of at my 6:00 AM thinking, thought I'm like, as
- 2:05:14I'm making stuff, I'm like, why is it happy Memorial Day, sad
- 2:05:17day. When I made the post on my page,
- 2:05:20I was like almost a happy memorial down there.
- 2:05:22It's like, yeah, it doesn't feel like the right thing to say.
- 2:05:25Like, like it's happy because we have these freedoms and we know
- 2:05:29that these people get into this. Our soldiers who go and
- 2:05:32sacrifice for our freedoms. Like we know that they know what
- 2:05:34they're signing up for. Sorry, there's a really loud
- 2:05:36truck. Damn.
- 2:05:40Well, they're lucky, the deer, the deer didn't run out in front
- 2:05:42of him, otherwise we would have heard it too, by the way, 'cause
- 2:05:46there's a really huge male deer that's been running through the
- 2:05:50yard and everything. So he's really glad and he
- 2:05:52didn't 'cause we're out in Farmfield.
- 2:05:53I mean, the cook nuclear, it's not too far from me.
- 2:05:55So I always tell people it's not tornadoes I'm worried about.
- 2:05:59Here's the nuke plant. If the nuclear plant has a
- 2:06:01meltdown or whatever, I'm in zone one.
- 2:06:03I'm just done. So but yeah, I mean, the fact
- 2:06:07that you can hear that, it's like, I hope the deer don't run
- 2:06:09out in front of you, but I kind of I do.
- 2:06:10But anyways, I know you're a history person, so I wanted to
- 2:06:14share that. But that's where I had that
- 2:06:16random thought in the morning. Like it's a Memorial Day, but
- 2:06:19it's not really happy day. But I guess it's kind of a happy
- 2:06:21day because we get to live our freedoms, but we live our
- 2:06:24freedoms because people sacrifice their life.
- 2:06:25So is that really a happy thing or not?
- 2:06:27But I don't know. At six AMI have a lot of random
- 2:06:29thoughts after that. So I don't know, maybe that
- 2:06:32makes sense to other people too. Like, I don't know, I thought
- 2:06:36I'd say that is a random thing. Speaking of documentaries, you
- 2:06:40mentioned the Tom Hanks thing. I did finally finish writing the
- 2:06:43next Bullring Chronics episode. I recorded part of the voice
- 2:06:46over too, so that'll be out soon.
- 2:06:47People have been asking me about that.
- 2:06:49I know I've been kind of dragging feet a little bit, so
- 2:06:51that's coming soon. It's going to be on a few of the
- 2:06:53lost tracks of Indiana. Sorry that I scared.
- 2:06:57Me. To press a button and I did the
- 2:07:00wrong thing. So again, I was just again,
- 2:07:02right, because I figured we started with taps, that that's
- 2:07:05how we'll end our show with taps and then end the stream.
- 2:07:09But I I wasn't cutting you off by the way, I.
- 2:07:11Had played me off like the Oscars.
- 2:07:13No. Well, Buju was great knowing
- 2:07:18you, but anyway. But no, that's my fault because
- 2:07:21I hit it in the staging so I can move will over and everything.
- 2:07:24And then I forgot that I need to bring it back and.
- 2:07:27But when I do, the sound comes with it.
- 2:07:29That's why, yeah, I just, I you need to fire me as the
- 2:07:32production manager because I don't know what I'm doing half
- 2:07:34the time. But anyways, you agreed with
- 2:07:36that, so I'll remember that. But anyways, again, awesome
- 2:07:41show. Thank you so much.
- 2:07:42Thank you to everyone who watched again like this.
- 2:07:45Share it out. It's free to do that.
- 2:07:47By the way, that helps us continue to grow.
- 2:07:50We have a lot of awesome guests coming up.
- 2:07:52Drew Jack is working on a really special one for us possibly in
- 2:07:55the next week or two who has NASCAR connections.
- 2:07:59So that's what I'll say. I won't say more because I'm not
- 2:08:01allowed to legally, but but it, you know, oh, and it's getting
- 2:08:06dark in my room too. So it is time for us to go.
- 2:08:07But, but we may have someone who has been in a NASCAR, raced a
- 2:08:13NASCAR won in NASCAR. So just maybe, maybe not.
- 2:08:20It's not officially. That's why I said I legally
- 2:08:23cannot say more. But it is something that we are
- 2:08:26working on. So we'll know more soon.
- 2:08:29And I'm not going to tell you. I'm going to keep it a secret.
- 2:08:31I don't even know so. But let's just say once you hear
- 2:08:35the name, you'll know the name, because then I'll tell you once
- 2:08:39I'm illegally allowed to. OK, fair enough.
- 2:08:42Victor may be coming back on here in a few weeks too, just
- 2:08:45before the Hartford Knight of Instruction.
- 2:08:47Victor, Jeremy Templeton and Phil may get on.
- 2:08:50And then I know Ralph has talked about getting on and I
- 2:08:53definitely want to get the strummies on here because it's
- 2:08:56cool. Dynamite Dylan strumming did the
- 2:08:58did the night of destruction the other day at New Paris.
- 2:09:01So it's always great when a strumming's on the property.
- 2:09:03I've said that many times. So, but other than that, like we
- 2:09:07started the show. Do you have anything else good
- 2:09:09for the group? No, Sir, I think we covered it.
- 2:09:12All right, so like we started the show, I'm going to get rid
- 2:09:15of all the graphics because this is more than us.
- 2:09:18We're going to end with taps just like we began with taps.
- 2:09:21So again, Buju, thank you for the show.
- 2:09:23Thank you for everyone watching. For now, we'll see you on
- 2:09:28Thursday for the Thursday night trial because it's almost, it's
- 2:09:30almost time to turn left and go fast because.
- 2:09:32We'll see you at the races. See everyone at the races again,
- 2:09:36remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
