- 0:21Speaker 1: It is.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Look who's back in town after seventeen days or whatever
- 0:28Speaker 2: the heck it was out there.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Glad to be back.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Welcome to the program here on the Monday on Sports
- 0:36Speaker 2: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and where you can
- 0:38Speaker 2: always listen to us absolutely free your charge on the
- 0:41Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app. Since this is the Craigway Show, I guess
- 0:46Speaker 2: I should do it right. Okay, my name is Craig Wait.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Thank you very much for joining us. Appreciate your joining
- 0:52Speaker 2: us today. Glad to be back from vacation. And no,
- 0:54Speaker 2: that's true. I think those of us who take vacation
- 1:01Speaker 2: are happy to have vacation.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And I was.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I went back to the you know, my home state
- 1:10Speaker 2: of North Carolina, down to the beach. But I had
- 1:11Speaker 2: other purposes and other reasons for that. My oldest son
- 1:14Speaker 2: was getting married, so there was a wedding down there,
- 1:17Speaker 2: so it was it was a little bit different kind
- 1:20Speaker 2: of journey.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And I'll get in all that in a few minutes.
- 1:22Speaker 2: But anyway, I sort of say, we do appreciate it
- 1:25Speaker 2: when we get our vacation time, but especially and I
- 1:30Speaker 2: think this really goes for living here in the state
- 1:35Speaker 2: and in this area, in the Greater Austin area, that
- 1:40Speaker 2: you're happy to get back to work, happy to get
- 1:42Speaker 2: back back to business.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And I am so glad to be back here.
- 1:46Speaker 2: They glad to have Jay Carmon here as the producer
- 1:48Speaker 2: who sat in and managed things and ran it well
- 1:52Speaker 2: and filled this host role while I was out.
- 1:56Speaker 1: And you're not having any withdrawal from that, not doing
- 1:58Speaker 1: it now.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Are you.
- 2:00Speaker 3: It's not yet?
- 2:00Speaker 1: Okay, Okay, that's good.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I appreciate you sitting in and I know you had
- 2:06Speaker 3: a good time doing it, so that's good, sir. Did
- 2:08Speaker 3: Welcome back, Craig. It's great to see you, Glad to
- 2:10Speaker 3: glad to have you back.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Good to be back. And again folks who've listened to
- 2:15Speaker 2: the program, and I mean there's some OG's that are
- 2:21Speaker 2: down here that remember when I was doing the show
- 2:23Speaker 2: in Dallas, and remember me taking that vacation always around
- 2:27Speaker 2: the same time of year. Now it is it has
- 2:30Speaker 2: become more crucial that I take it when I take
- 2:34Speaker 2: it now, sim simply because of the last twenty five years,
- 2:38Speaker 2: is the play by play voice of the Texas Longhorns.
- 2:41Speaker 2: It affords me the one opportunity to do that, and
- 2:44Speaker 2: that is going to be on the end of June
- 2:47Speaker 2: into mid July. Sometimes it's coming right on the heels
- 2:50Speaker 2: of the College World Series in I'm on this got
- 2:53Speaker 2: within a week of it with Texas having, you know,
- 2:57Speaker 2: the three games, and they were up there about a
- 2:59Speaker 2: week over the course of the time to play the
- 3:01Speaker 2: three games. And sometimes it runs right on the front
- 3:06Speaker 2: end of media days for the respective conference that the
- 3:11Speaker 2: Texas Longhorns played football in. I mean again for the
- 3:14Speaker 2: Ogs among you remember even going back to Southwest Conference
- 3:17Speaker 2: days back into the nineties in the mid nineties, and
- 3:21Speaker 2: then the Big Twelve starting in ninety six, and I
- 3:26Speaker 2: think too, I went to all but one in the
- 3:29Speaker 2: time that Texas was in the Big Twelve. The only
- 3:31Speaker 2: one I missed the thing was ninety seven, and that
- 3:33Speaker 2: was it got moved up earlier and it worked out
- 3:38Speaker 2: with with where I was headed in vacation all that
- 3:43Speaker 2: kind of stuff to where I didn't go that year.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I think Keith Moreland went with Bill.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Schoning to do it, and I did it, but that
- 3:49Speaker 2: was I think that's the only time I missed all
- 3:52Speaker 2: those years in the Big Twelve.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And then SEC he started a couple of years ago.
- 3:58Speaker 1: They had in Dallas a couple of years ago that
- 3:59Speaker 1: was gonna be it.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Last year in Atlanta, was coming off of vacation, so
- 4:04Speaker 2: Lynn and I just drove from the Myrtle Beach area
- 4:09Speaker 2: to Atlanta, about a six hour drive and did it
- 4:14Speaker 2: then and then just finished our drive home after that.
- 4:17Speaker 2: This time, the SEC Media Days were pushed back a week,
- 4:24Speaker 2: so gives me a chance to catch my breath and
- 4:28Speaker 2: get back have a regular full week of programming or
- 4:31Speaker 2: full week of shows, and then the following week we'll
- 4:35Speaker 2: be here Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, we'll head for Tampa, Florida
- 4:40Speaker 2: for SEC Football Media Day, so Cameron Parker will be
- 4:44Speaker 2: with us, Mike Cardball Harge, so we'll head We'll head
- 4:47Speaker 2: for Tampa for SEC Football Media Days a week from
- 4:50Speaker 2: Wednesday to be there Wednesday Thursday, including when Steve Sarkisian
- 4:55Speaker 2: and the Texas contingent is there on Thursday. So there's
- 4:59Speaker 2: that between that. By the way, even though I just
- 5:02Speaker 2: got back into town this weekend, I'll actually be down
- 5:05Speaker 2: in Houston. I'll do the full week of shows, but
- 5:09Speaker 2: then head to Houston on Friday. And it is the
- 5:13Speaker 2: annual Texas High School Coaches Association's Annual Coaching school and
- 5:19Speaker 2: convention and it's huge. It's the largest convocation of coaches
- 5:26Speaker 2: gathering one thing in the entire world. They'll have over
- 5:31Speaker 2: thirteen thousand coaches there and a lot of it in
- 5:35Speaker 2: its original named coaching Schools because they have a lot
- 5:37Speaker 2: of guest lecturers, usually college football coaches, clinic things, session
- 5:42Speaker 2: breakdown stuff like that. So they have that. They have
- 5:46Speaker 2: another event which used to be the final event of
- 5:51Speaker 2: the annow it's on the front end of it, and
- 5:53Speaker 2: it's the annual Hall of Honor banquet where their Hall
- 5:56Speaker 2: of Fame inductees are enshrined. And I have served as
- 6:01Speaker 2: the MC for that event for gosh, it's been over
- 6:05Speaker 2: twenty years now I've been doing it. And then and
- 6:10Speaker 2: then they have one other they have they have all
- 6:13Speaker 2: sorts of different things. They elect their new officers and
- 6:16Speaker 2: new president.
- 6:17Speaker 1: All that.
- 6:17Speaker 2: They have the gigantic exhibit hall in the convention center.
- 6:21Speaker 2: This in this case it be the George R. Brown
- 6:23Speaker 2: Convention Center there in Houston, where you walk through there
- 6:28Speaker 2: and you anything that's related to coaching and in large
- 6:34Speaker 2: measure of football, not not entirely football, but large measure,
- 6:39Speaker 2: so anything from goalposts to sports drinks to motivational videos.
- 6:49Speaker 4: To.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Elbow pads, to heat bomb, anything you can think of
- 6:56Speaker 2: that might relate to that sort of thing. There's there's
- 6:59Speaker 2: probably going to be the play for it. A display
- 7:01Speaker 2: booth there that's neat. Yeah, it's I used to say
- 7:04Speaker 2: it's the world's largest convocation of bike shorts and heat bomb.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Back when the coaches used to wear those polyester bike shorts.
- 7:12Speaker 3: They don't do that anymore. There a lot of them
- 7:15Speaker 3: are pretty fashionable now how about stick them? Yeah, yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 3: that too. All of that stuff is available there. So
- 7:21Speaker 3: then there's that.
- 7:22Speaker 2: There's one and like I said, there's several in person
- 7:25Speaker 2: interactive events that goes on, and then there's one other
- 7:27Speaker 2: event that I'm associated with and I really look forward
- 7:30Speaker 2: to it every year.
- 7:32Speaker 1: It's a lot of fun.
- 7:33Speaker 2: It's a panel discussion that I've been moderating again for
- 7:39Speaker 2: about twenty years now, where they gather on one stage,
- 7:45Speaker 2: all thirteen Division one FBS college football coaches who work
- 7:52Speaker 2: in the state of Texas all on one stage, so
- 7:54Speaker 2: all thirteen are there. I always do this every day
- 7:57Speaker 2: see if I can remember them all SMU TCU, North
- 8:01Speaker 2: Texas Texas Tech utep Rice Houston, Baylor, an M Texas
- 8:09Speaker 2: State UTSA. See always always start start to mess up
- 8:18Speaker 2: when I get right toward the end. Oh, I guess
- 8:21Speaker 2: I didn't say Texas. That'd be one. And then there's
- 8:23Speaker 2: one other one.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Did you say, well you did you say Sam Houston?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Sam Houston. That's the other one. Because they've only been
- 8:29Speaker 2: FBS for a short time. So anyway, that's that's all
- 8:32Speaker 2: thirteen Division one FBS programs are there on stage, represented
- 8:40Speaker 2: by their head coaches. So yes, Steve Sarkishan will be
- 8:43Speaker 2: on on the panel, and Mike elco at Texas A
- 8:47Speaker 2: and M will be on the panel, and and uh
- 8:50Speaker 2: Neil Brown the new coach in North Texas, and Rhet Lashley,
- 8:54Speaker 2: the coach at SMU Sunny Dyke's TCU. Anyway, all thirteen
- 9:00Speaker 2: Division one. Yes, Joey McGuire will be there, the Texas
- 9:03Speaker 2: Tech Red Raiders head coach. They'll all be on that panel.
- 9:08Speaker 2: And what they do is I am handed the questions.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I haven't looked at them. I just know that they're there.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I'm handed thirteen questions, one for each of the thirteen coaches,
- 9:28Speaker 2: and then there's a series of follow up ones that
- 9:32Speaker 2: are there. But the whole thing is only slotted for
- 9:35Speaker 2: like an hour and fifteen minutes, so it's you have
- 9:37Speaker 2: to kind of motor through it. And my charge is
- 9:40Speaker 2: not only to ask each coach what a specific question,
- 9:46Speaker 2: and these questions, by the way, are specifically written for
- 9:51Speaker 2: a specific coach. No, I don't think there'll be a
- 9:55Speaker 2: question about Brendan Soresby for Joey McGuire.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I don't think it's.
- 9:59Speaker 2: More because remember the audience, the people that are sitting
- 10:05Speaker 2: there watching is about five hundred division or five hundred
- 10:08Speaker 2: high school football coaches and some college coaches in there
- 10:11Speaker 2: as well, and they're ostensibly as part of quote unquote
- 10:16Speaker 2: coaching school. They're there to learn things, and so these
- 10:18Speaker 2: questions quite often are about building a program and staffs
- 10:23Speaker 2: and stuff, but in the past few years it is
- 10:26Speaker 2: included nil transfer portal, those kinds of things. So it's
- 10:32Speaker 2: a panel discussion that I really look forward to moderating,
- 10:36Speaker 2: and it takes and like we say, it's it's slotted
- 10:40Speaker 2: for like an hour, minute, hour and fifteen minutes something
- 10:42Speaker 2: like that, so we do we do that.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And that's one other thing.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I do that on Sunday before I come home, and
- 10:49Speaker 2: so I'll be there during the during the course.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Of the weekend, so that's coming up at the end
- 10:53Speaker 1: of this week.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Then midway through the following is when we go to
- 10:57Speaker 2: Tampa for SEC Football Media Days. Because, as I've often said,
- 11:01Speaker 2: when I've done this program, when I take vacation, when
- 11:05Speaker 2: I come back, what I usually tell people is I'm
- 11:09Speaker 2: ready to go for the next eleven and a half months,
- 11:11Speaker 2: because then boom, it's on you start. That's that's why
- 11:14Speaker 2: that one slot for me to take that vacation in
- 11:20Speaker 2: late June to mid July comes up, and that's what
- 11:24Speaker 2: I did, just not to bore anybody with the tails
- 11:27Speaker 2: on all this kind of stuff. Lennon and I we
- 11:30Speaker 2: like to drive it because she gets a chance to
- 11:35Speaker 2: see places that I may or may not have seen before.
- 11:38Speaker 2: In this case, there was also a place that she
- 11:41Speaker 2: had been to that I had not been to, and
- 11:43Speaker 2: that was up in the Gateway Arch in Saint Louis.
- 11:46Speaker 1: We actually went up in the arch.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Yeah, did you enjoy cramming into that little vale culser
- 11:51Speaker 3: you've done that.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Yeah, It's like a little capsule almost, and it seats
- 11:55Speaker 2: five people. So lenn and I were on one seat
- 11:59Speaker 2: and then on the other was a mom and a
- 12:02Speaker 2: dad and they had about an eight year old daughter
- 12:04Speaker 2: and they were with us, and she was very inquisitive
- 12:06Speaker 2: and all this stuff, and so we rode that up
- 12:08Speaker 2: to the top and you know, looked around to some pictures.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Linda had done it once before and she was a teenager,
- 12:13Speaker 2: but we went. We also saw the Cardinals and Diamondbacks
- 12:16Speaker 2: and had a good time there. Stayed right near the
- 12:20Speaker 2: ballpark with a good view of the ballpark. So we
- 12:22Speaker 2: did do that and then rolled it on over to
- 12:24Speaker 2: Kentucky and then and then uh down into North Carolina.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Uh and then my oldest son and he was was
- 12:32Speaker 2: getting married in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, so we were
- 12:34Speaker 2: there for that.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Clearly.
- 12:37Speaker 2: We gave them all in the wedding party, a very
- 12:40Speaker 2: nice rehearsal dinner and an Italian restaurant there at Myrtle Beach,
- 12:44Speaker 2: and that Linda found out and she mapped it all that.
- 12:47Speaker 1: She did a wonderful job getting all of that situated.
- 12:49Speaker 3: And then I thought the Italians came from your side
- 12:51Speaker 3: of the family.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I got many of them did.
- 12:53Speaker 2: But she she found the Italian restaurant to there's an
- 12:57Speaker 2: old school kind of almost good Fella's Italian placed we
- 13:00Speaker 2: liked to go and eat, but she she thought it
- 13:02Speaker 2: was like a little bit too scruffy for for a
- 13:04Speaker 2: rehearsal dinner, and I kind of agree with her. So
- 13:07Speaker 2: she went in she found a really nice place and uh,
- 13:10Speaker 2: and we had a nice rehearsal dinner for Andy and
- 13:12Speaker 2: Chantel the intendeds uh.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And then they had a very nice on.
- 13:16Speaker 2: The beach wedding, which Lynda and I had intended to
- 13:20Speaker 2: do when we got married down there four years ago,
- 13:22Speaker 2: but it rained on the one day. So but the
- 13:25Speaker 2: folks were ready for it at the dunes uh country club,
- 13:28Speaker 2: and they they set up their big club room for us.
- 13:31Speaker 2: So that worked out well. But but it was it
- 13:34Speaker 2: was perfect weather, a little warm, but perfect weather, uh
- 13:37Speaker 2: for the nuptials. And so they did a wedding on
- 13:40Speaker 2: the beach. It was great.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Congratulations, Yeah, that was great.
- 13:43Speaker 2: And then they and then then they and then uh
- 13:46Speaker 2: the people who set this up wedding venue had a
- 13:48Speaker 2: venue like ballroom where we had the reception after his
- 13:52Speaker 2: dinner and the reception and so Andy and Chantel are
- 13:56Speaker 2: now happily married. And they had had a very nice,
- 13:59Speaker 2: very nice, uh, very nice wedding. Uh so had that,
- 14:02Speaker 2: and then it was after that it was just kind
- 14:04Speaker 2: of chilling for several days and we did we actually Uh,
- 14:09Speaker 2: I had booked a house where I had my four kids,
- 14:13Speaker 2: and my four grandkids were all in there. So it
- 14:16Speaker 2: was it was except for Andy and Chantell wound up
- 14:19Speaker 2: staying a different place.
- 14:19Speaker 1: But it was, Uh, it was. It was a busy week.
- 14:22Speaker 2: And then we Hu Linda and I went down to
- 14:25Speaker 2: a condo down in Myrtle and we were there for
- 14:27Speaker 2: a few days and then just took our time driving back.
- 14:29Speaker 2: We went through Ashville, which is a beautiful place in
- 14:32Speaker 2: North Carolina in the mountains. A lot of people compared
- 14:36Speaker 2: to how Austin was, say thirty years ago, forty years ago,
- 14:40Speaker 2: you know, when it was more quaint and art seeing
- 14:44Speaker 2: really cool, before Austin got as big as it has gotten.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Uh, but it was nice.
- 14:48Speaker 3: I've heard great things about the food there.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it is.
- 14:51Speaker 2: We we ate at uh, a pan Asian place that
- 14:55Speaker 2: was just tremendous. Uh had had dinner there and then
- 15:00Speaker 2: and we walked down the block. We returned to a
- 15:03Speaker 2: little Irish pub where we had gone a year before
- 15:05Speaker 2: when we'd driven through and uh and listened that they
- 15:08Speaker 2: had kind of had a It wasn't an open mic night,
- 15:11Speaker 2: but it was a band night thing, and so you
- 15:13Speaker 2: had a whole bunch of uh jazz orient It was
- 15:16Speaker 2: kind of almost an open jazz night.
- 15:18Speaker 1: So that was good. We did that.
- 15:20Speaker 2: We drove on the Nashville went to one of my
- 15:23Speaker 2: favorite places where Cameron laid waste, to place Monel's where
- 15:27Speaker 2: you just eat all this comfort food and all that stuff.
- 15:29Speaker 1: We did that.
- 15:31Speaker 2: And then drove home, came came home over the rest
- 15:35Speaker 2: of the weekend.
- 15:36Speaker 1: So it was nice.
- 15:37Speaker 2: We had a good I had a really good vocal vacation,
- 15:39Speaker 2: but now ready to get back into it.
- 15:41Speaker 1: And so we got several things.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Where there are new laws and regulations for college athletics,
- 15:51Speaker 2: you can be certain that lawsuits are to follow.
- 15:53Speaker 1: So we'll have some.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Stuff on that, some other college football notes to get
- 15:58Speaker 2: to pro football notes as well. We've hit the figurative
- 16:03Speaker 2: halfway point of the Major League Baseball season. They've already
- 16:06Speaker 2: all passed the numeracle point, but we're at the All
- 16:09Speaker 2: Star break. We'll talk a little bit about that tomorrow.
- 16:12Speaker 2: By the way, Gene Watson, our MLB insider from the
- 16:15Speaker 2: Chicago White Sox front office will join us. We'll kind
- 16:17Speaker 2: of a mid season evaluation and then in a recap
- 16:23Speaker 2: of the Major League draft which just had or that
- 16:25Speaker 2: we can we have some more details on that.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Congratulations as the.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Longhorns who have been drafted on that, so we get
- 16:30Speaker 2: to all of that, and as always back in the suddle,
- 16:33Speaker 2: glad to have your input to the program, your questions,
- 16:37Speaker 2: your comments, your thoughts.
- 16:38Speaker 1: You can do that. We already have somebody weighing in
- 16:42Speaker 1: on that.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Yad At Chuck Dunaway on YouTube says Craig, I'm so og.
- 16:46Speaker 3: I used to listen to you during Longhorn football games
- 16:49Speaker 3: with my dad when I was a kid in the eighties.
- 16:51Speaker 3: We lived north of Houston and didn't have cable. And
- 16:54Speaker 3: then he also said, congrats to your son.
- 16:55Speaker 2: No, yeah, okay, well thanks if you were listening to
- 16:57Speaker 2: me on long Horn broadcast in the eighties, which you
- 16:59Speaker 2: heard was the studio anchor, because I.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Had my first work with the LongRun.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Radio Network broadcast on football on any sport was as
- 17:10Speaker 2: the studio anchor from eighty eight through ninety one. I'd
- 17:13Speaker 2: done six years of working on the North Texas broadcast
- 17:16Speaker 2: with my broadcast mentor Bill Mercer, but then the old
- 17:20Speaker 2: Southwest Conference radio network hired me as the studio anchor,
- 17:24Speaker 2: which I was the studio anchor for the entire conference,
- 17:27Speaker 2: and then when that conference network broke up after the
- 17:30Speaker 2: eighty nine season in ninety ninety one, it was the
- 17:33Speaker 2: studio anchor for Texas, but also for Army, Navy, Pitt Alabama,
- 17:40Speaker 2: and Florida State, so I did those as well. Can't
- 17:46Speaker 2: mix up Army and Navy. Yeah, yeah, that's exactly right.
- 17:49Speaker 2: So that was That was through the ninety one season.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Then ninety two is when I moved into the booth
- 17:53Speaker 2: working as the analyst with Bill Shooning. We did ten
- 17:56Speaker 2: football and nine basketball seasons together before Bill went on.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Course to the San Antonio Spurs.
- 18:01Speaker 2: All right, so we'll get to your questions, your thoughts.
- 18:05Speaker 1: All you have to do.

- 18:46Speaker 2: back feature, and you can leave us a voice message
- 18:48Speaker 2: of up to thirty seconds. If you have a question
- 18:51Speaker 2: or a thought, or a comment or something like that,
- 18:52Speaker 2: your voice would actually make it onto the air. A
- 18:54Speaker 2: lot of folks choose to Texas and that's fine again.
- 18:58Speaker 2: If you do that, you text the word Texas follow
- 19:00Speaker 2: by your question or comment to eight zero. Got a
- 19:03Speaker 2: lot to get to. Yes, Inconceivable is back as well, Chris,
- 19:06Speaker 2: I never left. It was all with Jake. You had
- 19:08Speaker 2: it virtually every day, didn't you. Yeah.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I don't think we missed one.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Okay, So that's good. That's important.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Uh So we do have Inconceivable coming up this hour,
- 19:16Speaker 2: so we're gonna get to a lot of things. Glad
- 19:18Speaker 2: to be back, Glad to have you with us as well.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Here on a Monday on sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 19:22Speaker 2: the Zone, where you always listen to us for free
- 19:24Speaker 2: on the iHeartRadio app. Everybody could be back under blue
- 19:40Speaker 2: Skies time.
- 19:42Speaker 1: We know that. But it's always like that in July, right,
- 19:44Speaker 1: it always.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Gets pretty hot. But we're glad to be with you
- 19:51Speaker 2: this afternoon and happy to be back here, and as
- 19:56Speaker 2: we mentioned, uh, certainly happy to take your questions, your thoughts,
- 20:01Speaker 2: your comments. All you have to do is text the
- 20:04Speaker 2: word texas follow out your question or comment too. Oh,
- 20:09Speaker 2: that's a mind lap time doing that. Earlier we had
- 20:12Speaker 2: a sound like that and you said that was yours?
- 20:14Speaker 2: Was it yours or the computer here in the studio.
- 20:16Speaker 3: That's no, Yeah, that would might have been. That's just
- 20:19Speaker 3: the universal email sound there for outlooks. So right, somebody's
- 20:23Speaker 3: going the back route for a little question or a comment.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Well, no, it was it was that was actually me
- 20:29Speaker 2: because what I was doing was opening our text line
- 20:34Speaker 2: because you already had it open on on your side
- 20:39Speaker 2: and I didn't have it open yet online.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I was, you know, I got to get.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Back into the swing of Yeah, look at it a
- 20:45Speaker 3: little rust here.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I just had to, you know, get get
- 20:48Speaker 2: comfortable again, get going again with uh with everything.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Uh, okay, got it up, got it up and going down.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Let's see.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Somebody asked, oh, this was the other day. Somebody asked,
- 21:00Speaker 2: what happened to the Belgian goalie?
- 21:01Speaker 3: Oh, I was talking about that live on air, because
- 21:03Speaker 3: we were on Friday afternoon, that Spain versus Belgium game
- 21:06Speaker 3: that you mentioned. T Boat courtois the real Madrid star,
- 21:10Speaker 3: the legendary Belgian goalie had to leave with an injury. Yeah,
- 21:14Speaker 3: and so the backup came in, gave up a less
- 21:17Speaker 3: than stellar rebound that allowed Spain to bang home the winner.
- 21:20Speaker 3: And so they were following up on that because I
- 21:23Speaker 3: had mentioned that Belgians God to make a change in goalie.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and it ended up not helping him. Now Spain
- 21:31Speaker 2: winding up advancing. So you have Spain in France one
- 21:34Speaker 2: semi final, you have England in Argentina. Any other rematch
- 21:39Speaker 2: of the semifinal in Mexico City forty years ago. The
- 21:43Speaker 2: infamous or famous depending on your point of view, hand
- 21:46Speaker 2: of God goal by Diego Maradona where the video kind
- 21:51Speaker 2: of clearly shows he kind of touched and they asked
- 21:53Speaker 2: him about it and said, did did the ball make
- 21:55Speaker 2: contact with your hand?
- 21:56Speaker 1: He said, I it's the hand of God.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Any anyone that's complained and I'm included in this that's
- 22:03Speaker 3: complained about the use of the v a R, the
- 22:05Speaker 3: video assisted at this tournament. Yeah, needs to remember right,
- 22:09Speaker 3: this is how it used to be. True.
- 22:12Speaker 1: And I will say this too.
- 22:15Speaker 2: I like the v R, but just like instant replay
- 22:19Speaker 2: in college football, uh uh you know, the the ball
- 22:27Speaker 2: strike uh you know system, the ABS system uh and
- 22:37Speaker 2: especially true, I think in replay in football, both pro
- 22:39Speaker 2: and college football, and here, uh, it needs to be tweaked, improved,
- 22:45Speaker 2: a little faster, a little quicker. Sometimes it seems to
- 22:50Speaker 2: take a long time, and in tournament interminably long time
- 22:54Speaker 2: to get a review correct, even even when the college
- 23:00Speaker 2: obvious as well. So I'm I'm for replay. I'm forgetting
- 23:04Speaker 2: the call right. I just would like him to get
- 23:06Speaker 2: it right a little quicker than what they've done well.
- 23:09Speaker 3: And I'd like the explanations to improve. Sometimes. I don't
- 23:13Speaker 3: know if it's I don't know if it's the language
- 23:15Speaker 3: barrier in some of these situations, or just the fact
- 23:17Speaker 3: that this is a new mechanism for some of these
- 23:20Speaker 3: refs who officiate in leagues outside of the top flights
- 23:23Speaker 3: in Europe that don't have this system at all. It's
- 23:28Speaker 3: they're getting used to it as well. Here like here
- 23:31Speaker 3: was the explanation. This referee from Argentina, Yvonne Bartone, is
- 23:36Speaker 3: assigned the semifinal. This was his Uh. This is sort
- 23:39Speaker 3: of a moment that went viral in that Paraguay Turkey
- 23:41Speaker 3: a match refe not by the way, and that was
- 23:50Speaker 3: about the clearest one we got all tournament.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good.
- 23:56Speaker 3: He's screaming into the mike.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Uh uh. This sounds it sounds like a.
- 24:03Speaker 2: That sounds like a skip from Saturday Night Live with
- 24:05Speaker 2: Marcella Hernandez doing it or something.
- 24:07Speaker 1: So it sounds like he sounds a little bit like
- 24:09Speaker 1: it on that by the way.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Speaking of the World Cup, did you read the piece
- 24:13Speaker 2: in the Athletic about the announcers and how they call
- 24:16Speaker 2: the goals?
- 24:17Speaker 1: Have you read this?
- 24:18Speaker 3: Oh? No, I saw the headline and I got distracted.
- 24:20Speaker 1: It was okay, go ahead and okay.
- 24:23Speaker 2: The headline reads, how does Fox call World Cup goals?
- 24:27Speaker 3: They don't by not calling them.
- 24:30Speaker 2: And this was written by three writers, Rebecca Talbor, Andrew Marshan,
- 24:35Speaker 2: who's kind of the TV critic, the media critic, and
- 24:38Speaker 2: Dan Schennoff. And it said you may have noticed it
- 24:41Speaker 2: while watching World Cup games on Fox this week. A
- 24:44Speaker 2: goal of scored, the TV play by play announcer offers
- 24:47Speaker 2: a quick exclamation, then silence, just the roar of the
- 24:51Speaker 2: crowd and images from the world feet of jubilant or
- 24:53Speaker 2: despondent players and fans, but no TV announcer narrating in
- 24:57Speaker 2: that moment. The term of art in sports television. I
- 25:02Speaker 2: remember hearing this way is laying out. I'll never forget
- 25:06Speaker 2: doing a high school state basketball tournament when.
- 25:09Speaker 3: It was girls UIL girls.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Then in the late nineties when Mansfield won four straight
- 25:14Speaker 2: girls state basketball championships, and we had a different producer,
- 25:18Speaker 2: not a regular one that was used to working with
- 25:20Speaker 2: all this and had a regular is a guy who
- 25:23Speaker 2: was used to working I think pro sports and some
- 25:26Speaker 2: college So as soon as the thing I said, Mansfield
- 25:28Speaker 2: is gonna let the time run out, and that's gonna
- 25:31Speaker 2: do it. And all I was gonna say is the
- 25:34Speaker 2: Mansfield Lady Tigers are state champions. And I got that much.
- 25:39Speaker 2: The Mansfield Lady Tigers are state champion. I got that
- 25:41Speaker 2: much out of the guys yelling lay out layout.
- 25:45Speaker 3: What what was the plan?
- 25:49Speaker 2: I had to talk to him afterwards. Like, dude, I'm
- 25:51Speaker 2: with you on that. Let me at least say they're
- 25:53Speaker 2: state champions, right.
- 25:54Speaker 3: You need you need the clip, the clip that's gonna
- 25:56Speaker 3: go in the history.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Books exactly so.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Anyway, as they write in the article, the term of
- 26:02Speaker 2: art in sports television is laying out, and as has
- 26:06Speaker 2: been a parent any fan of Global soccer slash football
- 26:10Speaker 2: broadcast tuning in the Fox for the World Cup. The
- 26:12Speaker 2: technique is distinctive to US broadcasting Fox in particular, but
- 26:17Speaker 2: a technique you regularly experience an action from all of
- 26:21Speaker 2: their top us play by play voices during the biggest
- 26:23Speaker 2: televised sports events.
- 26:24Speaker 1: This is where it gets interesting.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Simply put, laying out is the play by play announcer
- 26:29Speaker 2: allowing the natural, frenzied crowd noise rather after a huge moment,
- 26:33Speaker 2: to carry the pictures on the screen rather than talking
- 26:36Speaker 2: over them. Think of Joe Davis calling a walk off
- 26:39Speaker 2: home run, Kevin Burkhart calling a game winning field goal,
- 26:42Speaker 2: Mike Breen calling a buzzer beating tip inn, or Joe
- 26:44Speaker 2: Buck calling a Hail Mary touchdown. There is no dead air,
- 26:48Speaker 2: Buck told the Athletic. If the announcer doesn't talk, the
- 26:51Speaker 2: air is still alive bucks point in space allows the
- 26:55Speaker 2: viewer at home to feel the electricity inside the stadium.
- 27:00Speaker 2: In US sports TV, laying out is considered an elite skill.
- 27:04Speaker 2: The best do it naturally, while others get tweaked for
- 27:06Speaker 2: talking over that initial wave of crowd sound and images.
- 27:10Speaker 2: You know, one of the pioneers of it was Vin Scully,
- 27:12Speaker 2: obviously with what he did, but so during this World
- 27:15Speaker 2: Cup you can sense the English broadcasters wrestle with a
- 27:18Speaker 2: distinctive old world impulse to keep talking after the goal
- 27:21Speaker 2: is scored, an entirely standard and valued practice on European
- 27:25Speaker 2: football match broadcast. To be sure, it still happens off
- 27:28Speaker 2: and on US broadcasts across all sports. They are clearly
- 27:31Speaker 2: mindful of the American broadcast custom. They give it a
- 27:34Speaker 2: few seconds, let the crowd noise frame the moment, then
- 27:36Speaker 2: jump back in unleashing welcome pent up enthusiasm to talk
- 27:39Speaker 2: about what viewers have just seen. Derek Ray, who's really good.
- 27:43Speaker 2: He's British, you know, one of Fox's announcers. It comes
- 27:47Speaker 2: down to wanting the moment to shine rather than the
- 27:49Speaker 2: commentator being front center in that moment. I think if
- 27:52Speaker 2: we did it for every single Biggish moment, then it
- 27:55Speaker 2: would lose its effectiveness. So it really is sort of
- 27:58Speaker 2: time and place and understanding when the organ soundtrack is
- 28:01Speaker 2: going to be more powerful than anything we could say
- 28:04Speaker 2: as commentators.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I agree.
- 28:06Speaker 3: So there's that approach, and then there's the Telemundo approach
- 28:10Speaker 3: where a lot of English speaking listeners and viewers are
- 28:14Speaker 3: watching the games on Telemundo because it's a very different
- 28:17Speaker 3: style of broadcast that there's no layout on this at all.
- 28:19Speaker 5: No, it's good.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Andres Kantor is a great army, but you can see
- 28:38Speaker 3: in coolers like commercials doing it when he gets that.
- 28:41Speaker 2: When he when he orders a coolers light, you think
- 28:44Speaker 2: he's saying go, and he goes cool.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Coors light.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Peace.
- 28:50Speaker 3: By the way, there's another minute eighteen seconds of this,
- 28:52Speaker 3: but I know we don't.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Have right right, right, yeah, yeah, So he goes on
- 28:56Speaker 2: and that's more of an international thing.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Uh.
- 28:59Speaker 2: One thing I found interesting about the article Derreck Ray,
- 29:02Speaker 2: who's a British broadcaster but he's Scottish to be exact,
- 29:06Speaker 2: and he said he vividly remembers the first time he
- 29:08Speaker 2: ever heard the American style. It was the nineteen eighty
- 29:11Speaker 2: six AFC Championship game, dick Enberg called Cleveland Brown's receiver
- 29:16Speaker 2: Brian Brennan's forty eight yard touchdown reception from Bernie Cosar
- 29:21Speaker 2: Broncos ultimately won the game on the drive engineered by
- 29:24Speaker 2: John Elway. But he said Brian Brennan, he's got it,
- 29:28Speaker 2: and he doesn't speaking him for a full minute. I
- 29:31Speaker 2: remember listening to it and thinking this is different. Ray said. Then,
- 29:35Speaker 2: when I started working on American events, it was made
- 29:37Speaker 2: clear to me by a lot of producers that this
- 29:40Speaker 2: was kind of a tenant of American team to try
- 29:42Speaker 2: to accentuate that moment. So I think as a commentator,
- 29:47Speaker 2: it's incumbent upon us to understand our audience, to understand
- 29:50Speaker 2: who we're working for, to understand who we're talking to. Now,
- 29:53Speaker 2: all of that is true, I offer only this one
- 29:57Speaker 2: caveat everything we were just talking about TV. It's different
- 30:02Speaker 2: on radio. If you don't say anything on radio for
- 30:06Speaker 2: long periods of time, people don't know what the hell
- 30:08Speaker 2: is going on. You can give it a moment in
- 30:10Speaker 2: the crowd swells, but you shouldn't go a.
- 30:13Speaker 3: Minute and a half.
- 30:14Speaker 2: You got to come back in and explain what happened.
- 30:17Speaker 2: And usually the analyst does that afterwards, and Roger Wallas
- 30:20Speaker 2: does has a real good sense of timing on coming
- 30:22Speaker 2: in after.
- 30:23Speaker 1: It's Keith Morlamon. He's worked with me as well.
- 30:25Speaker 2: You know, I'll call it touchdown, touchdown Texas eighty seven
- 30:28Speaker 2: yards or whatever, and then I'll lay out and you'll
- 30:31Speaker 2: go for a few seconds, and then Roger or Keith
- 30:33Speaker 2: will come in afterwards.
- 30:35Speaker 1: So there is a practice to it.
- 30:41Speaker 2: I don't know how much quote unquote skill there isn't it,
- 30:46Speaker 2: but it's a good habit to work yourself into as
- 30:50Speaker 2: a broadcaster on radio as well as television.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Obviously.
- 30:54Speaker 2: All right, up next inconceivable here in the Money afternoon,
- 30:58Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the Zone, second hour of the program
- 31:09Speaker 2: here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone, Craig
- 31:13Speaker 2: Way with you alongside the producer Jay Carmon. Glad to
- 31:15Speaker 2: be back in the house after being gone on the
- 31:18Speaker 2: annual sabbatical, the annual vacation in this case seventeen days
- 31:24Speaker 2: of vacation. So because it's the one time of the
- 31:27Speaker 2: year where i'm you know, I can take a day
- 31:29Speaker 2: here or a day there and do stuff. When I
- 31:31Speaker 2: go up to guest lecture at North Texas. Sometimes it
- 31:34Speaker 2: requires taking a day off or something else here or there.
- 31:38Speaker 2: But I can't take any protracted time off other than
- 31:44Speaker 2: that one spot in the summertime, because like I laid
- 31:46Speaker 2: out in the first hour of the program coming up
- 31:49Speaker 2: at the Annual Coaching Convention for the Texas High School
- 31:52Speaker 2: Coaches Association and the Annual Coaching School and then we
- 31:57Speaker 2: go to Tampa for SEC Football Media Days, and then
- 32:00Speaker 2: we get back right after that practice starts, like within
- 32:03Speaker 2: a week football practice that players report practice underway, and
- 32:07Speaker 2: we hit the ground run and we get ready for
- 32:08Speaker 2: a brand new football season, which is around the corner.
- 32:11Speaker 2: But I always say that the first mile posts first
- 32:15Speaker 2: mile markers of those are the release of Dave Campbell's
- 32:18Speaker 2: Texas Football Magazine, which is out. The subscribers have their copies,
- 32:28Speaker 2: and I think it'll be available on the shelves. And
- 32:35Speaker 2: to use the og quote, news stands. There are still
- 32:38Speaker 2: new stands, by the way, especially where your home turf
- 32:42Speaker 2: the East coast, they still have very active news stands.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Correct in the big cities.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and you can still find a news stand at
- 32:49Speaker 3: a bookstore airport yep, yep.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:53Speaker 2: So But anyway, and I think they're doing the same
- 32:58Speaker 2: thing again with Dave Campbell's Texas Football. I think it's
- 33:00Speaker 2: going to be available on the supermarkets, probably Walmart, and
- 33:03Speaker 2: then I think also in Barnes and Noble. So anyway,
- 33:09Speaker 2: that's one mile marker, and then you start getting into
- 33:12Speaker 2: the serious mile posts like Conference Football Media Days.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Who was last week? Big twelve? Big that's right?
- 33:22Speaker 2: Big twelve was last week, and ACC is tomorrow, right,
- 33:27Speaker 2: And it goes on for a few days, And the
- 33:31Speaker 2: Big twelve did it all in two days, didn't they
- 33:33Speaker 2: They did?
- 33:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, so.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Half of them one day and half the next, and
- 33:37Speaker 2: then the SEC takes four days to do. It will
- 33:41Speaker 2: be there Wednesday and Thursday in the back half of it,
- 33:43Speaker 2: including the day that Texas will be there as well,
- 33:45Speaker 2: So that's next week. Big ten follows, I guess right
- 33:51Speaker 2: around that time at an American conference that's going on though,
- 33:54Speaker 2: had those as well. So those are things that happen now.
- 34:00Speaker 2: When I come back from vacation, invariably I have to
- 34:06Speaker 2: catch up on a lot of things. I used to
- 34:09Speaker 2: have a phrase that would say, when you go out
- 34:11Speaker 2: of town and you're working out of town, not vacation,
- 34:14Speaker 2: but if you're just working out of town, you have
- 34:16Speaker 2: to work twice as hard to come back only half behind,
- 34:20Speaker 2: is what I used to say.
- 34:21Speaker 1: But in the.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Case of vacation, there's stuff that you're just going to
- 34:26Speaker 2: have to catch up on. And I try to, I mean,
- 34:30Speaker 2: even while relaxing and whatever, being on the beach or
- 34:33Speaker 2: or just hanging out, I try to, you know, get
- 34:36Speaker 2: caught up on my reading and and things like that.
- 34:39Speaker 2: So I'll do that, but there's some there's some other
- 34:44Speaker 2: things as well. Linda just reminded me of a story
- 34:49Speaker 2: I left out of Inconceivable. It's fabulous, but I'm gonna
- 34:53Speaker 2: save it for tomorrow. Okay, it's it's it's wonderful. It's
- 35:00Speaker 2: perfectly because you just start with the word snakes and no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 35:04Speaker 2: it's it's it's really good. In fact, speak of the things.
- 35:08Speaker 2: When we were driving home, we stopped at a rest area.
- 35:17Speaker 2: We weren't long back inside the Texas border, inside across
- 35:23Speaker 2: the state line. And I will tell you this, a
- 35:25Speaker 2: lot of rest areas in the Deep South are really nice. Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia,
- 35:33Speaker 2: South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas not so much, but
- 35:40Speaker 2: most of them really nice, and Texas has some really
- 35:43Speaker 2: nice rest areas. So we pull over a rest area
- 35:48Speaker 2: because the driver had to run to the restroom.
- 35:52Speaker 1: That was me. I'd been drinking a lot of iced
- 35:55Speaker 1: tea and water and sodas and stuff on the drive.
- 36:00Speaker 1: So eventually, you know, the payment comes due. You got
- 36:02Speaker 1: to make that stop off and run in there for
- 36:04Speaker 1: number one pretty quickly. So I'd done it, and it
- 36:07Speaker 1: was in the evening, and this was near.
- 36:14Speaker 2: It was kind of between Mount Pleasant and Greenville, so
- 36:17Speaker 2: I was probably about one hundred mile. It was on
- 36:20Speaker 2: I thirty. That's probably about one hundred miles inside the
- 36:22Speaker 2: state line, a little further into Texas than I originally remembered.
- 36:28Speaker 2: It was in Hopkins County, which is where sulfur springstets.
- 36:31Speaker 2: So it's on the west side of that before you
- 36:33Speaker 2: get into the Hunt County over where Greenville is, and
- 36:35Speaker 2: then you're only about fifty miles from Dallas. So I'm
- 36:39Speaker 2: rolling through there and I stopped the rest and I
- 36:43Speaker 2: going in and you know, going there and hit the urinal.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Then I come back and on my way back and
- 36:50Speaker 2: I thought, this is like one of the nicest rest
- 36:54Speaker 2: areas I think I've ever been in it's very clean, right.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I even remarked to Linda that you can't eat off
- 37:01Speaker 2: the floor there, but you could put a picnic blanket
- 37:03Speaker 2: down there and sit on there and feel pretty comfortable.
- 37:06Speaker 2: But I walk out and they have a nice little
- 37:08Speaker 2: scenic pond in front of it, a little banked area there,
- 37:13Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, that's nice. Nothing that I see
- 37:15Speaker 2: a sign that says please watch out for snakes back
- 37:20Speaker 2: to the car. Now, that wasn't the story what Linda
- 37:23Speaker 2: said it the once he said, it's far better than that,
- 37:25Speaker 2: But that came to mind. The other thing is, and
- 37:27Speaker 2: this is something I said to one to the top
- 37:28Speaker 2: of the hour about something that was connected to the vacation.
- 37:34Speaker 1: In my home state.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Of North Carolina, and Texas is my home, let's not
- 37:41Speaker 2: be I've lived more years of my life in the
- 37:43Speaker 2: state of Texas i have in North Carolina. But as
- 37:46Speaker 2: they the old saying is about the home state where
- 37:48Speaker 2: you were born, where you grew up. That was North Carolina.
- 37:51Speaker 2: I left when I was eighteen and I haven't been
- 37:53Speaker 2: back except on vacations. But one of the things that
- 38:00Speaker 2: there aren't too many things that are available in North
- 38:06Speaker 2: Carolina that aren't available in Texas. But one of them
- 38:10Speaker 2: is a soft drink. And I've talked about this before
- 38:14Speaker 2: that I drank as a kid, not that often, but
- 38:17Speaker 2: to drink it often enough to really really like it
- 38:20Speaker 2: and to miss it when it was our air. And
- 38:23Speaker 2: it was developed during.
- 38:25Speaker 3: World War One.
- 38:29Speaker 2: And during the war. During World War One, corn syrup
- 38:32Speaker 2: was not available for certain sodas. It were in short supply.
- 38:37Speaker 2: So this local bottler in Salisbury, North Carolina, came up
- 38:41Speaker 2: with a soft drink using cherry syrup instead of corn syrup,
- 38:46Speaker 2: and he called it cheer wine. Now there's no wine
- 38:50Speaker 2: in it. It's a soft drink. It's a soda, but
- 38:52Speaker 2: that was the name of it. It was developed in
- 38:54Speaker 2: nineteen seventy seventeen and it caught on big. It's always
- 38:58Speaker 2: been big in North Carolina, some parts of South Carolina,
- 39:02Speaker 2: maybe the northern and to the coast, and maybe a
- 39:05Speaker 2: little bit in Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia, just little bits but
- 39:09Speaker 2: not much. Hard to find it. It's mainly in North Carolina,
- 39:12Speaker 2: and they've always kind of taken pride on being a
- 39:14Speaker 2: smaller bottler and not getting too big. So this cheerwine sodai,
- 39:20Speaker 2: he said, what does it taste like it's kind of
- 39:22Speaker 2: a cross between cherry coke and Big Red. Okay, okay,
- 39:28Speaker 2: It's not quite as sweet sugary like Big Red, but
- 39:32Speaker 2: more so than cherry coke. But it doesn't have a
- 39:34Speaker 2: cola flavor. It's more of a cherry flavor, kind of
- 39:37Speaker 2: a cherry soda. So I always liked it. So I
- 39:40Speaker 2: brought a twelve pack of it back here for North
- 39:43Speaker 2: Carolina native Cameron Parker Nice and he about flipped, you know,
- 39:48Speaker 2: gave it to him. He really really liked it, so
- 39:53Speaker 2: he so I brought him some. So our two super interns,
- 39:57Speaker 2: you know that worked throughout the building, Catherine uh and
- 40:00Speaker 2: uh antone who's subbed in here before. They had never
- 40:05Speaker 2: tried it before, and they're like, I want to you
- 40:08Speaker 2: need to drink it cold. I've just brought six a
- 40:10Speaker 2: twelve pack in at room temperature. So they went and
- 40:12Speaker 2: got cups of ice and cracked it open and they're like, wow.
- 40:15Speaker 3: Sugar rush again.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Not quite as sugary as a cream soda or you know,
- 40:24Speaker 2: even a Big Red, but more so than like a
- 40:27Speaker 2: cherry coke.
- 40:28Speaker 1: I think that's the best way to describe. Have you
- 40:30Speaker 1: had it before?
- 40:31Speaker 3: I've had. I've never had cheer wine.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Okay, you probably what we probably need to do is
- 40:35Speaker 1: do a taste testing.
- 40:35Speaker 3: But I've had a cherry coke, had a big red Okay,
- 40:38Speaker 3: I'm picturing it, okay, all right, all right, yeah I'm interested.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, it's good. So Seapala says, yess. Old
- 40:45Speaker 2: guys understand the rest stops. Yea, yeah, we had a
- 40:49Speaker 2: few of those. And you know what, that's directly proportional
- 40:53Speaker 2: to what you're consuming while you're driving. Right, our last
- 40:59Speaker 2: drive was about twelve hours, broken up by meals and
- 41:05Speaker 2: you know and rest stops, you know whatever in stretch
- 41:07Speaker 2: your legs and things like that. But it was it
- 41:10Speaker 2: was a long drive. So naturally we had, you know,
- 41:15Speaker 2: snacks everyone to make up this nice snack basket thing.
- 41:19Speaker 2: So we have that and she could pull out some
- 41:21Speaker 2: snacks when when I was on vacation in North Carolina,
- 41:25Speaker 2: there was a little candy store on the island and
- 41:28Speaker 2: they sell a lot of old school candy, not just
- 41:32Speaker 2: you know the raiders stuff of the old school stuff
- 41:34Speaker 2: like old school caramel creams and old school zagnut bar
- 41:40Speaker 2: and what never had a zag nut? It's picture a
- 41:44Speaker 2: butterfinger without the chocolate, but infused with some coconut in it.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Oh there's no peanuts.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, you wouldn't be able to eat it
- 41:52Speaker 2: because it's like the peanut butter filling type of like
- 41:56Speaker 2: a butterfinger.
- 41:57Speaker 3: Is zagnut I see nuts and I zag the other
- 41:59Speaker 3: way exactly.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Yeah, you would need to so that they have the older,
- 42:04Speaker 2: older candy bars and things like that saltwater taffy, which
- 42:08Speaker 2: long one fans always managed to get some on the
- 42:10Speaker 2: fairgrounds of the State Fair for the Texas O You game.
- 42:13Speaker 1: So it's stuff like that.
- 42:14Speaker 2: So I had I had a sack of that, you know,
- 42:17Speaker 2: where I could just pick off a piece or two
- 42:20Speaker 2: driving you know, or whatever. Or she might have a
- 42:23Speaker 2: bag of chips open or something like that. So and
- 42:26Speaker 2: I'm you know, washing this down either with with uh,
- 42:29Speaker 2: you know, I had.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Some bottled iced tea or or or soda or uh
- 42:35Speaker 1: or water.
- 42:35Speaker 3: That caffeine could be a double edged sword though.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Well, and you know it also helps with the long
- 42:40Speaker 2: drive sure, but yeah, it increases the amount of.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Stops, the amount of snakes.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Apparently you be careful which ones you do, right, So
- 42:51Speaker 2: anyway that that you know, that's all part of that
- 42:54Speaker 2: long distance road travel that we're all familiar with if
- 42:56Speaker 2: you do enough of it driving. I mean, how many
- 42:58Speaker 2: times would you say you've driven between your home area
- 43:02Speaker 2: of DC and here in Texas.
- 43:04Speaker 3: Oh? Oh, well, in college I would fly. I've driven
- 43:10Speaker 3: from Texas to Wisconsin and back twice, and then I
- 43:13Speaker 3: obviously drove down here when I moved.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Okay, so I've done.
- 43:17Speaker 3: And I also went from my hometown up to North Dakota.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Yeah. I was going to ask you about the Dakota connection.
- 43:23Speaker 1: That's a lot of driving.
- 43:24Speaker 3: So I've done, you know, four or five of these
- 43:27Speaker 3: really hefty road trips.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:29Speaker 2: So you know what it's like there, and you're you know,
- 43:30Speaker 2: snacking along the way, You're having a beverage along the way,
- 43:33Speaker 2: and eventually you got to have to stop because those
- 43:37Speaker 2: sodas will run through you and the water will as well.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Mainly i'd drink a lot of water, but I would,
- 43:42Speaker 2: but I would mix in soda or iced tea and
- 43:45Speaker 2: stuff like that, and.
- 43:46Speaker 1: Then it's like, okay, I gotta stop.
- 43:49Speaker 3: She's like okay, so yeah, so that that that happens.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Stopping happens. Yeah, on that all right?
- 43:56Speaker 2: Coming up, And like I said, this this update on
- 43:59Speaker 2: this college for whole thing with regard to nil, there's
- 44:01Speaker 2: some interesting numbers and things thrown out. We'll get to
- 44:05Speaker 2: that when we continue here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 44:08Speaker 2: under the zone of the IRT Radio app set an
- 44:14Speaker 2: hour of the program here on this Mounday, I'm thirteen
- 44:17Speaker 2: under the zone, Craig Way with you alongside the producer
- 44:19Speaker 2: Jay Harman.
- 44:22Speaker 3: There were two or three.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Items and things like that that I didn't have the
- 44:28Speaker 2: opportunity to comment on while on vacation because it was
- 44:31Speaker 2: on vacation, and some of it had to do with
- 44:36Speaker 2: the things that were going on with the World Cup
- 44:38Speaker 2: and the United States, you know, coming up short against Belgium.
- 44:43Speaker 2: I do agree with Carly Lloyd's assessment that they almost
- 44:47Speaker 2: looked like they were playing scared. They were very tentative
- 44:49Speaker 2: and wound up costing them. Belgium got very very aggressive
- 44:53Speaker 2: on the offensive end.
- 44:55Speaker 3: As a flat start, it can't you can't use your
- 44:58Speaker 3: home field advantage proper when you start as flat as
- 45:02Speaker 3: they did, and it just it looked like they were
- 45:04Speaker 3: at a different speed than the rest of the tournament, right.
- 45:06Speaker 1: So that was one thing.
- 45:08Speaker 2: The whole business with Balligan and the red card off,
- 45:13Speaker 2: then back on, and I noticed I've read a lot
- 45:16Speaker 2: of things where you know, a lot of long time
- 45:19Speaker 2: veteran journalists were heavily critical of FIFA for allowing him
- 45:22Speaker 2: to play and allowing him to be whatever politically influenced
- 45:25Speaker 2: or whatever, whether it was or not, and ended up
- 45:29Speaker 2: not mattering in the long run anyway. Now, one other
- 45:34Speaker 2: item that's come down is something in Myron Metcalf, who
- 45:39Speaker 2: covers college football and basketball for ESPN, had a piece
- 45:43Speaker 2: today one thing that happened while I was out, and
- 45:50Speaker 2: we knew it was coming, and we said it was
- 45:53Speaker 2: coming and talked about it months ago, and it was
- 45:55Speaker 2: part of the motivation when Jim Schlasnegel was playing some
- 46:02Speaker 2: players late in the season who hadn't played all year
- 46:04Speaker 2: law and freshmen, because he expected the five year rule
- 46:10Speaker 2: to pass, where you would get a flat five years
- 46:15Speaker 2: to play college athletics in whatever amounts you chose to do.
- 46:20Speaker 2: You have five years to do it, to do all
- 46:22Speaker 2: of it. And so it did pass, and I think
- 46:26Speaker 2: it's a good rule. I know Sark has been in
- 46:30Speaker 2: favor of a lot of college football coaches were in
- 46:32Speaker 2: favor of event worry about red shirt and this and
- 46:34Speaker 2: medical and hardship and great shirt and all that other
- 46:36Speaker 2: stuff he had five years. Well, there's always going to
- 46:40Speaker 2: be a flip side to it, and Myron Metcalf wrote
- 46:44Speaker 2: today that the NCAA is facing a federal class action
- 46:51Speaker 2: lawsuit against these eligibility rules. Eleven Division one athletes, including
- 46:57Speaker 2: kay Tyson of Minnesota basketball player and Brock Wisney of
- 47:01Speaker 2: Northern Colorado, have filed a federal class action lawsuit in
- 47:06Speaker 2: Colorado that alleges that the new eligibility rules have adversely
- 47:10Speaker 2: affected their ability to extend their college careers and the
- 47:13Speaker 2: and io benefits.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Attached to such opportunity.
- 47:16Speaker 2: The eligibility rules I mentioned grants all athletes five years
- 47:22Speaker 2: to compete. However, it did not reant athletes who exhausted
- 47:29Speaker 2: their eligibility in this just completed season an additional season.
- 47:35Speaker 2: So a partner in the Caneo, Gilbert, Flannery and Laduca
- 47:42Speaker 2: Law firm sent in a statement, these athletes aren't asking
- 47:44Speaker 2: for special treatment. They're just asking to not be singled
- 47:48Speaker 2: out and excluded from the NCAA's eligibility framework. The NCAA
- 47:52Speaker 2: updated the rules, but refused to apply them only to
- 47:55Speaker 2: the very group that was most immediately effective if the
- 47:59Speaker 2: NCAAA has determined that five years of eligibility is the
- 48:02Speaker 2: fair rule for college athletes, and athletes who would still
- 48:05Speaker 2: be available but for completing four years of eligibility should
- 48:09Speaker 2: not be deprived of the same educational, athletic and NL opportunities.
- 48:13Speaker 2: Last week, an Ohio judge granted twenty four men's and
- 48:17Speaker 2: women's college basketball players at preliminary injunction to continue their
- 48:21Speaker 2: college careers and enter the transfer portal after they'd been
- 48:27Speaker 2: ruled ineligible by the NCAA after they alleged the new
- 48:30Speaker 2: system unfairly impacts them. After that decision, the NCAA Division
- 48:35Speaker 2: One cabinet said, quote, we do not intend to change
- 48:37Speaker 2: course in quote. So basically, these athletes, he's eleven athletes
- 48:45Speaker 2: are saying, we deserve just because you came up with
- 48:50Speaker 2: this rule now doesn't mean it couldn't give us. We're
- 48:55Speaker 2: in the hero and now right now, we just finished
- 48:56Speaker 2: our fourth year. We should get one more year. And
- 49:00Speaker 2: they're saying, no, you can't do that.
- 49:02Speaker 3: And you can't do that because the five for five
- 49:04Speaker 3: model right didn't start till it doesn't grandfather them in right.
- 49:09Speaker 3: But in other words, It's not like they were taken
- 49:14Speaker 3: away of a year that they would have otherwise had.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 49:17Speaker 3: They were under a system where they knew it was
- 49:20Speaker 3: their last.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Year, right, and then this came up.
- 49:24Speaker 2: I would say, I do feel sympathy for them, if
- 49:26Speaker 2: only because what we all just went through with the
- 49:29Speaker 2: COVID year and the Super Senior and all that stuff.
- 49:32Speaker 2: There were a group of athletes that came in in
- 49:35Speaker 2: twenty seventeen twenty eighteen that wound up with six and
- 49:39Speaker 2: seven years of eligibility because of what happened with the
- 49:42Speaker 2: COVID rule, and which I thought was a fair rule
- 49:45Speaker 2: by the way, Now was it then exploited?
- 49:50Speaker 1: Yeah? I think so. Who's the Miami tight end nine years? Right?
- 49:55Speaker 2: Oh, Miami tight end was there for nine years with
- 49:58Speaker 2: four different schools, and he had a injuries and things
- 50:01Speaker 2: as things of that nature.
- 50:03Speaker 1: And we've heard of some eight year seniors.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Kim McCormick, that's the guy nine. He enrolled at Oregon
- 50:09Speaker 3: in twenty sixteen.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, got nine years.
- 50:15Speaker 3: He played in the playoff.
- 50:17Speaker 1: He played in the playoff. How about that?
- 50:19Speaker 2: So anyway, so that's why I can kind of understand
- 50:25Speaker 2: where this case is coming from. They're saying, you know,
- 50:27Speaker 2: there's guys that got six, seven, eight in that case nine,
- 50:31Speaker 2: but six and seven year eligibilities were pretty common. Texas
- 50:38Speaker 2: had a catcher a few years ago that wound up
- 50:40Speaker 2: with I think it wound up total being seven years
- 50:46Speaker 2: because there was two years at Hill College in Hillsborough
- 50:49Speaker 2: juco route and then and by the way, that's an
- 50:52Speaker 2: entirely different argument than a lot of student athletes are
- 50:55Speaker 2: making that. We saw that with the Diego Pavia thing,
- 50:58Speaker 2: saying that junior college should not count against your collegiate eligibility.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Sark by the way, who was a junior college quarterback,
- 51:07Speaker 2: vehemently opposes that, says, no, you're playing college athletics, you're
- 51:12Speaker 2: just playing at the junior college level. Pavia got his
- 51:17Speaker 2: extra year, went through it, and went undrafted afterwards. But
- 51:24Speaker 2: he's open and catch on be able to extend his career.
- 51:29Speaker 2: But this particular rule is kind of sticky because this
- 51:37Speaker 2: eligibility rule set will dramatically shift the athletic climbing in
- 51:43Speaker 2: college sports. And this is Myron Metcalf writing this, as
- 51:46Speaker 2: most waivers and red shirts will be eliminated with few exceptions.
- 51:51Speaker 2: In college basketball, international players have been key additions across
- 51:57Speaker 2: the landscape. But the new ruling means older play from overseas,
- 52:03Speaker 2: like the Long Words getting their latest Lithuanian you know,
- 52:07Speaker 2: will no longer enjoy the same opportunities as the new
- 52:11Speaker 2: eligibility clock for all athletes will begin when they enroll
- 52:15Speaker 2: in college or the semester after they turn nineteen.
- 52:19Speaker 3: In other words, you can't sign a twenty two year
- 52:22Speaker 3: old from Spain and you have five years.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Yeah, five years. It doesn't work that way for the
- 52:28Speaker 2: international players. The clock starts from the time they enroll,
- 52:32Speaker 2: regardless of age, or you know, when they turn the
- 52:38Speaker 2: semester after they turned nineteen. So whether you're nineteen or
- 52:43Speaker 2: twenty three, the clock is that you you know, you
- 52:45Speaker 2: got you got the five years.
- 52:47Speaker 1: The clock is underway there right.
- 52:48Speaker 3: So it doesn't take away the opportunity from from professionals
- 52:53Speaker 3: in Europe, that's correct. But you're doing something to prevent
- 52:58Speaker 3: the upward trajectory of ages, particularly in college basketball, because
- 53:04Speaker 3: that's been identified already now as a big advantage.
- 53:08Speaker 2: And I will say this too. The other things that
- 53:11Speaker 2: I've read about this, and in some of the reading
- 53:14Speaker 2: that this was going to come down like this and
- 53:16Speaker 2: that there was going to be a class action lawsuit
- 53:18Speaker 2: for those who wanted that one extra year. Part of
- 53:22Speaker 2: their argument in the age argument is going to be
- 53:25Speaker 2: look at BYU. If student athletes go on mission, assignments,
- 53:31Speaker 2: mission tripped, they go on mission and come back, and
- 53:34Speaker 2: you're going to start the clock at age twenty four
- 53:37Speaker 2: with them. So this is where these arguments are going
- 53:41Speaker 2: to come down. Do you throw a blanket over all
- 53:44Speaker 2: of it, or is it a case by case basis
- 53:47Speaker 2: or does it apply in certain circumstances. And that's why
- 53:50Speaker 2: they said with few exceptions. There will be some exceptions.
- 53:54Speaker 2: With regard to injuries and waivers, there will be some exceptions,
- 54:02Speaker 2: but not many. By and large, this rule was crafted
- 54:06Speaker 2: to give student athletes. Say you're coming out of west
- 54:10Speaker 2: Lake or Cedar Ridge or LBJ or Leand or High wherever,
- 54:17Speaker 2: and you sign on to the college, the clock starts.
- 54:20Speaker 1: You got five years. That's how it's designed.
- 54:24Speaker 2: These people's argument is we should have been allowed to play.
- 54:28Speaker 2: We should be allowed to play under these same rules
- 54:31Speaker 2: because we just completed what would have been the fourth year,
- 54:35Speaker 2: so we should be allowed our fifth year.
- 54:37Speaker 3: But they had red shirts available and weren't given so
- 54:42Speaker 3: there's the give and the take.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Yep, yep, and that's that's going to be about. So
- 54:46Speaker 2: it's going to be interesting to see how, how and
- 54:49Speaker 2: where this goes with them. All Right, we'll continue here.
- 54:53Speaker 2: We're at the All Star break for Baseball. Show of
- 54:56Speaker 2: hands out there. If you're interested in the Home Run Derby.
- 55:00Speaker 3: I'll give it a watch. I watched the Home Run Derby.
- 55:03Speaker 3: I predicted on the air Friday that Bryce Harper was
- 55:07Speaker 3: going to repeat what he did in DC, and that
- 55:09Speaker 3: is win the home run Derby at his home stadium.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Oh okay, but the format's all different now, so who knows.
- 55:14Speaker 1: We're going to get into that. Coming up next here
- 55:16Speaker 1: on thirteen under the.
- 55:17Speaker 3: Zone Cock Back, Back, Back God, where.
- 55:31Speaker 6: It's the Craig Wag shot with the voice of the
- 55:34Speaker 6: Texas Longhorts and Hall of Fame broadcaster.
- 55:38Speaker 4: Craig here on the Swindsay Afternoon. Can I say that.
- 55:53Speaker 2: One thing that I don't miss is Chris Berman on
- 55:56Speaker 2: the Home Run Derby.
- 55:58Speaker 1: And I like Chris Berman.
- 56:00Speaker 2: I've liked him on the NFL Countdown and Prime Time
- 56:03Speaker 2: and all that stuff, and it's a sports center anchor.
- 56:07Speaker 2: I just felt that baseball was not his best sport,
- 56:09Speaker 2: either in the play by play realm, and certainly not
- 56:11Speaker 2: on that I mean, because it was all part of
- 56:13Speaker 2: his stick, the backpackpack backpack thing, and after a while
- 56:15Speaker 2: it got kind of old listening to it. So that's just,
- 56:20Speaker 2: you know whatever, shaking my fist at the clouds or whatever.
- 56:23Speaker 2: But I'm kind of glad we don't have that anymore.
- 56:25Speaker 3: Yeah, brings me back to those childhood home run Derby's
- 56:28Speaker 3: I used to watch, and I agree. I like him
- 56:31Speaker 3: with the those fastest two minutes.
- 56:34Speaker 1: Yees or three minutes, isn't it.
- 56:36Speaker 3: Yeah, they've They've given him another minute.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Yeah right, He's great on that, and he is a
- 56:41Speaker 2: Hall of Fame broadcaster. That's just one part of his game,
- 56:45Speaker 2: just like Joe Buck. I think is a contrary to
- 56:49Speaker 2: some opinion, a lot of people don't like Joe Buck.
- 56:51Speaker 2: I think he's really really good, but golf is not
- 56:54Speaker 2: his game. And when they had him on the US
- 56:56Speaker 2: Open several years ago on Fox, it was ill fitted,
- 57:00Speaker 2: if that makes sense. I'd love hockey in the NHL,
- 57:08Speaker 2: but I haven't done play by play of hockey before,
- 57:10Speaker 2: and I would probably not be good at it if
- 57:12Speaker 2: I try. At least not starting off anyway, it would
- 57:14Speaker 2: probably take some time.
- 57:15Speaker 1: You know, I'd soccer. I've done both indoor and outdoor.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Don't a lot of that.
- 57:21Speaker 2: Obviously, football, basketball, baseball, Uh, tennis have done, but I
- 57:26Speaker 2: haven't done hockey.
- 57:26Speaker 3: He's called tennis, uh huh for television.
- 57:29Speaker 2: That it's been a few years. But yes, so swimming
- 57:33Speaker 2: and diving as well. So you know, there's there's certain
- 57:38Speaker 2: ones that maybe were less attuned to. And I also
- 57:41Speaker 2: understand how contracts work where people get certain things in
- 57:46Speaker 2: their contracts and stuff like that to get to work
- 57:48Speaker 2: certain events and things like that.
- 57:50Speaker 5: Uh.
- 57:50Speaker 2: Speaking of the home run derby, Uh, there is there
- 57:55Speaker 2: are stet uh stat cast metrics being put in the
- 58:00Speaker 2: play to help break down the field. So you know
- 58:07Speaker 2: that with the rules that are in play, it might
- 58:14Speaker 2: be pretty interesting to see, for example, dinger score. So
- 58:23Speaker 2: if they ruled top dinger scores from twenty sixteen to
- 58:30Speaker 2: the press and excluding twenty twenty one, they and it
- 58:37Speaker 2: includes guys who did win it win the derby, but
- 58:41Speaker 2: most of the time did not.
- 58:45Speaker 1: The top dinger sto scores And.
- 58:52Speaker 2: What they did was to compare a handful of stat
- 58:56Speaker 2: cast batting metrics to see which held any predictive power
- 59:01Speaker 2: over home run derby scores, so in some cases if
- 59:05Speaker 2: it had any impact at all, said, we took all
- 59:08Speaker 2: that and made it into a one through ninety nine
- 59:11Speaker 2: Dinger score that puts one number to a batter's first
- 59:15Speaker 2: half derby success to see how well they would relate
- 59:19Speaker 2: to advancement with further rounds weighted more heavily. There wasn't
- 59:23Speaker 2: a home run derby as we know in twenty twenty,
- 59:25Speaker 2: of course, and they excluded twenty twenty one caausey was
- 59:28Speaker 2: played at coors Field, Yes, so you know what that's
- 59:31Speaker 2: going to be like. So seventy two batters were ranked
- 59:37Speaker 2: eight per year over eight derbies, plus the eight more
- 59:41Speaker 2: that you're going to see coming up in this home
- 59:44Speaker 2: run derby tonight. The top Deinger scores of the top
- 59:48Speaker 2: nine scores of sixty four ranked in this particular metric,
- 59:54Speaker 2: Eight advanced beyond the first round, six made the finals,
- 59:57Speaker 2: and four won the whole thing. So the top scorers
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: were scores of ninety nine. One of those Aaron Judge
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: speed of ninety nine. He won it in seventeen. O'Neil
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: Cruz advanced to the second round. That got knocked out.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: He had a five hundred and thirteen. For the home run,
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: he had a ninety nine score. Vladimir Junior three years
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: ago won it had a ninety seven. Juliorodregez was a
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: finalist in twenty twenty two. He had a score of
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: eighty eight. Ronald Acunya Junior a score of eighty six,
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: and twenty nineteen he got to the second round. Twenty
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: twenty two a score of eighty five for Acunya. Soto
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: won it twenty twenty two a score of eighty one.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Gen Carlo Stanton twenty sixteen won a score of eighty
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: and Miguel Sanyo it was a finalist in seventeen. The
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: lowest score was a one Alex Bregman and Adlie Ritchman,
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: and none of them advanced beyond.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: The second round off of that. So maybe it is a.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: You know, they used a variety of metrics adjusted exit velocity.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: I know there's some people out there just rolling their
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: eyes over the really batspeed.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: Oh yeah, Jack Kagle owns the bat speed king. He's
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: in this in this Derby.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: UH exit velocity on pulled air balls only, okay, and
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: blast per contact rate, adjusted exit velocity is a version
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: of exit v loo where it's only the average of
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: balls hit at least eighty eight miles per hour, because
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: anything underneath that is just a different flavor of poor compact.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: Is what they say pull in the air when every
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: home run in the derby counts the same, because that's
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: how it's done in a competition like this. Of the
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: more than twenty three home runs hit in derby's over
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: the past decade, three quarters of those were balls pulled.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: If you're right handed, hit or pulling it out to
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: left field. If you're a left handed or pulling it.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: Right you say twenty three home runs, twenty three hundred
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: there ago.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: Of the more than twenty three hundred homers hidden derbys
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: of the last decade, three quarters of those were pulled. Yeah,
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: and in the last three years only six total home
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: runs were opposite field shots. So they say that's a
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: happy accident in a derby.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: That's not a.
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: Plan, right, because you don't have the pitcher supplying you
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: the type of velocity to take it the other way.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: That's exactly right.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: The rate of how often participants pull it in the
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: air in the regular season doesn't seem to matter much
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: how hard they hit it when they do does matter.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: It's why James Wood didn't fare so great.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: In the run Derby. Good point.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Bat speed mattering so much shouldn't be surprising, given that
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: it gives you margin for error even.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: If you tire.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: If you look at this year's top ten in bat speed,
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: half of the group you mentioned, Jack Kaglom Junior, Cavian Arrow,
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: Jordan Walker, Kyle Schwarber, Wilson Contreres, they're all in the Derby,
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: and those are bat speed guys.
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: Yeah, and Jordan Walker for a while was a bat
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: speed and hit one hundred mile an hour ground balls guy,
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: and this year he figured out how to lift it
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: and he's had a major breakout.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: A blast, meanwhile, is a squared up ball that's also
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: done with elite bat speed. Plenty of slower swingers like
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Luisa Rise and Mookie Bats square up the ball really well.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: Many fast swingers do not square up the ball that well.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the problem Dylan Cruz is having right now.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: So the rare few who can do both, and this
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: year you're talking about Caviny Arrow, Juan Soto and Jordan
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Alvarez Let's saydon they're in the top five of that number,
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: and those guys are stars. So and they say, by
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: the way, one takeaway, what shouldn't surprise anybody hitting the
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: ball hard in the first half of it really does matter.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Each year there's a smaller, lighter slugger who relies on timing,
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: athleticism and pulling it to exactly the right spot in
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: order to get in game power. No one obviously suggesting
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: that the likes of bragmant in twenty eighteen and twenty nineteen,
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: Bets in twenty twenty three, and Jazz Chisholm last year
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: aren't very good players, because of course they are. They
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: also tend not to do well in a competition like this,
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: where less raw power simply gives you less margin for
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: error and demands perfect timing over dozens of swings. A
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: worry if bats being dips even slightly over the night
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: as fatigue sets it.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: That's why I got like.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: Pete Alonzo does well in it, you know, big dude,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: and in fact says you can even look look back
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: and learn something this way. For example, why did two
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: time champ Pete Alonzo do a lot better in twenty
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: nineteen when he won it in Cleveland and in twenty
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: twenty two when he advanced to the second round in
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Los Angeles, than he did in twenty twenty three and
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: twenty twenty four when he failed to advance out of
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: the first round either time. Because in this view, it
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: was easily visible headed into the derby that he wasn't
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: the same hitter in those latter years. Again, this is
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: in counting Colorado in twenty twenty one when he won there.
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: They just throw that one out. It makes sense. So anyway,
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: who were roll off the roster? The guys who are competing.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: The night so you already mentioned contrerast, Jordan Walker, Jack
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: Cagleon from the Royals and Junior Camonaro from the Rays,
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber to Philadelphia Phillies are competing,
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: Ben Rice from the Yankees and Munataka Murrik Comedy.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: Nice to have him healthy, yeah yeah, so, and we'll
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: talk to Gene Watson about him since he plays for
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: his team, the Chicago White Sox. All right, we'll be
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: back to wrap up Hour number two right here on
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: Radio AM thirteen under his own back in the house,
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: back from vacation, back on the radio with you.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: On the money.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Glad they had you with us, Craig why you joined
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: by the producer Jay Kerrman on the text line, we
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: had like sea palace and some nice things. And you
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: weren't invited to the wedding, you know, but Taylor Swift
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: and Travis Kelcey, No, my own son, and he was
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: getting married the very same day.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: So I was a little tied up, you know. No,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I was not invited on that. Did you have a
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: lot of feedback and folks commenting on the wedding?
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: We were out on the third, right, well, so we
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: had we had an inconceivable item on the trash outside
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: the wedding and that drew some okay, some eye rolls,
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: But no, no, not a lot on on that actual
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: wedding because like you said, we were out on the third.
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: The day before that was was a US World Cup day, right,
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: So we're talking about that for a lot, right.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: And then and then and then you were out what
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: was it last Wednesday? There was a Daytime Round Rock
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Express game.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: Yep, YEP, Daytime Express game on that Wednesday, gave us
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: a little midweek intermission.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: Okay, all right, so does that as well? See Pal
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: said like I said, yes, old guys understand the rest
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: of you. They're good to have.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Uh. And then there's our man Ryan.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: When you hear from him and nice things, Ryan, I
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: appreciate it, said welcome back, glad you're back, and asked
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: if I had a nice cold one.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: Yes I did. Uh.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: But on all three of Ryan's text he said I
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: did not even listen to thirteen hundred at all while
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: you were gone. Now, Ryan, are you saying that just
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: because I was out? Are you saying that because Jake
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: was hosting the show? Because he's right here in the room,
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: and Jake was able to read those exact same words
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: there when he said I did not listen to thirteen
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: hundred at all while you were gone? I mean, was
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: that a shot at Jake? Is that how that works?
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: You're just saying just because I was out, you know whatever?
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: And if it was just because I was out, I
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: would say, should give Jake a shot every now and then,
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: you know what I because every now and then I
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: have to miss Jake does a good job, prepares forty
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: as guests. He has opinions, he talks, and the heel
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: refer to your texts as well.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: Right, yeah, oh.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: We get.
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: We had some texts and we were able to talk
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: about live on the air. We had folks kind of
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: on the cynical side. When it came to the NHL's
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: potential move to Austin. That was a topic we talked
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: about a lot. We were taking suggestions on on hockey
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: team names. It was fun, Ryan, you missed out.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Go back to the old minor league ten the ice bats.
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, A couple of folks were texting in with that. Yeah,
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: my somewhat ironic team names didn't draw any interest in
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: the traffic.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's good. That's good. Yeah, apropos. Anyway, we
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: were talking about college football last hour, and well was
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: going to happen with some of the other things, the
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: college athletics, the five years to play five things, the
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: class action suit and all that. Would it be safe
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: to say that you, if you're not a first rate
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: died in the woold gamer, at least you've participated in
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: some of the games like the AA Sports college football
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: games and stuff like that in past years.
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: Yeah. I used to play it growing up every year
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: the college football up through twenty fourteen. When it stopped,
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: it was fun. I remember I would I took one year,
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: I took Tulane as my team and wound up. You know,
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: it was pretty realistic. The Superdome started empty, then it
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: was full by the time I was playing for you know,
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: New Year six Bulls.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: Did you have because I tuned Innicasional when it was
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: all on the road, did you have an item where
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: if you played Florida International and won it you would
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: get see some tickets?
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: As? Was that the deal?
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: Yeah? It was the first. I think two people were
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: offered season tickets in the club level. If you take
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: Florida International as your team win the national championship, screenshot it,
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: send it in.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: Okay, uh, I know you said it evokes some things.
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: Some folks were doing ai thing. So they were playing
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: outside the rules.
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: Yeah they were. They were sending in screenshots here done
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: right away upon closer inspection.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: That's not a real screen grab. Okay, all right, so
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: there's that. Also, How difficult is it to do that
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: with a team that's not good?
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: Not as hard as you think. Well, because because you
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: have to play it depends on the settings you have
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: the mode the game mode in terms of the actual
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: you have to be like, what is it Championship mode
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: or whatever it's called. The Oh, maybe I didn't see
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: that caveat too. I don't know how they could verify that. Yeah,
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: I think it's got to be like in the highest mode.
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: But it's hard if you're a Florida International in the
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: game to build up your to build your roster, right,
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: you have the challenges that are built into that, regardless
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: of what mode you're actually playing the game on.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: Okay, I'm glad you took that step because of this.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: Next story, and I suppose I should ask This was
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: updated a couple of days ago, so post I should
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: ask my son Jason because he just ordered the CFB
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: twenty seven game.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: I think he's got it now he's been playing it.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: And did you have the story on Friday about what
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: EA Sports has decided.
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: Yeah, we touched on it a little bit.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: There's a lot that I find about this game and
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: the way that EA Sports is going about manipulating this
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: whole thing very distasteful. They announced on Friday that the
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: CFB twenty seven game we will no longer include micro
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: transactions and single player modes. Now, when I first read it,
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: I didn't know what that meant, so I had to
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: do some more reading to figure out what that is.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: And basically, you correct me if I'm oversimplifying it. The
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: more money you pay and invest in this thing, the
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: better chance you have of winning.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: Pay to win.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: It's pretty much.
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: It's pretty standard on your run of the mill iPhone
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: app rather than a high tech, next generation sports video
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: game that's played competitively and cost sixty bucks.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: Right, So I mean naive that I am. I thought
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: you paid your sixty bucks and you played, and if
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: you were good enough then you could win.
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: You never have to spend any money. But the fact
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: that it's in there, it's a little predatory.
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: It leverages the opportunity to be successful depending on how
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: much you expend, Right, you better be really darn good.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: And here's to your point, Like you said on iPhone,
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: my wife Linda plays two or three various games that
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: helps the time pass by the way when we're driving
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: home on vacation, and on some of those games they
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: want her to pay more money. I guess it's kind
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: of a now an updated tool of them. We used
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: to play at the arcade and you got your third
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: ship blown up, you want the game to continue, put
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: in two more quarters. I guess it's that's kind of
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: a version of it back in the day. So the
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: reason that they're doing this, they're pivoting this that they're
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: not going to include micro transactions in single player modes
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: because they got a lot of backlash from folks and
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: campaigns to boycott the game, largely driven by popular online
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: personalities whose content serves as a crucial promotional vehicle for
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: modern games.
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: This is true. This is the hottest trend that I'll
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: see in my YouTube algorithm. Now that we're talking about this,
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: and now that it's listening to us, it'll be for instance,
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: you know I took I took a team of all
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: Juco guys and won the national championship. People will take
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: you on these journeys through and people can play the
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: game vicariously and watch in one hour what it would
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: take them days to do. They don't have time.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Wow, And here's the mode I was talking about. But
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: the deal one I mentioned about the Florida International Dynasty Mode. Yep,
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: that's the one I thought I heard reading you got it,
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: you have to win it in Dynasty Mode and.
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: You can play Dynasty mode. You know you can. You
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: can link your different consoles online. I've got a group
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: of friends all they all went to Texas with me,
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: all live here. Last year they started a competitive Dynasty mode.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: They all started in the Sun Belt.
- 1:14:30Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: But they erupted into a fight when a couple months in,
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: you know, the third virtual season rolls around. Right, one
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: of my friends goes, oh, by the way, I just
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: took the Texas job, so that's gonna be my team.
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: Now you can't do that.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Yeah, what are you talking about.
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: That's after taking Charlotte all the way to the Sugar.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Bowl, right.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Gaming the system in other words, Well, so, these micro transactions,
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: as Jake kind of laid out, require players to pay
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: for access to certain in game features and their commonplace,
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: and many games that feature online multiplayer modes, they often
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: involve character skins or power ups to give paying players
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: exclusive content. Those transactions, however, are typically limited to online play,
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: whereas most single player games allow players to access their
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: core content once they purchased the game, which is what
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: I thought was always the case. Apparently A got greedy
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: with this when it came to single player modes.
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: Well, you don't have to do any of this. But
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: of course when you're comparing yourself to to, you know,
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: versions of the past game, it's like it would be
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: like if something you're you never had to pay for
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: before suddenly slapped the charge on it. If Starbucks suddenly said, hey,
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: you have to pay nine to nine cents when you
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: order a head.
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: On our app.
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: Right, you don't have to do it to enjoy the product, right,
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: but they make it.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: More convenient if you do well, it said. In the
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: case of CFB twenty seven, which was released last week
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: for deluxe version buyers my son and on Thursday for
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: the general public, EA required players to pay for x
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: P slider progression within the game's Dynasty and Road to
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Glory modest.
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: Mid to explain that that's that's where you know if
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: you if you bring in and again, I haven't played this,
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: but I have watched some people play it, and I
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: have seen my friends in this competitive Dynasty mode of theirs.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: So what is x P slider progression for Dynasty or
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: Road to Glory mode?
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: What I think that is referring to is when you
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: land a player with your team, you normally you have
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: to you know, you can take them out of the
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: practice field. You can you can do such and such
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: things to develop your players and develop your program, and
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: this kind of speeds that up by pain by paying
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: rather than playing.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Okay, The modes are two of the franchise's most popular
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: and are both single player. The game's base price of
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: sixty nine to ninety nine made the inclusion.
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: Coming up at seventy bucks now Yes, the.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: Game's base price of sixty nine ninety nine made the
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: inclusion of micro transactions a point.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Of further criticism.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: By requiring additional payments to progress in those single player modes,
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: EA broke from a model it had established across at
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: sports games over the last thirty years, and online backlash
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: was swift. Average players and prominent game influencers called the
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: tactic a money grab and expressed outrage that EA had
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: announced their inclusion before the game launched. So here's like,
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: for example, here's a post for mcguyle and x Sneaking
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: micro transactions into single player modes lets me know everything
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: I need to know about where EA wants to take
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: both football titles in the future. That's why it's now
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: or never to make a change. Taking the game and
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: that direction is going to ruin all of the support
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: and love.
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: So because remember this game only came back on popular demand.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know because of all the issues that
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: happened with the name, image and likeness. Really it's kind
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: of opened the door with part of that, the name,
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: image and likeness. I remember when Rod Bavers was on
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: the staff and he talked about how he liked the
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: thought of being in the like two thousand and two
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: game or the one game or whatever, and then later
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: they came back and offered everybody like six hundred bucks
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: I think in a game or something like that.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: Now, the workarounds that they used to be able to
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: do for that was crazy. You'd have QB number ten
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: and he would look and play like Vince Young. Yeah right,
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: it just didn't have his name right, right exactly.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: So anyway, it's EA Sports has decided to eliminate the
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: paid progression systems at the center of the controversy and
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: says the changes will it take will take took effect
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: over the weekend, so they kind of they kind of backpedaled.
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: We think about this too. There's there's kids that they're
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: playing the game, and you know, gosh knows if mom
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: or dad has a credit card hooked up to the Xbox.
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: I'm not talking about this from experience, but you know,
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: the kid could be paying for this and nobody would
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: even know about.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: It, right, Yeah, exactly.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: And you say kids like you said, well, you need
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: lots of people who were playing Listen, a lot of.
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: Older Yeah, a lot of older guys and girls are
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: playing this game because they remember it from twelve years ago.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: Yep, yep, including my youngest son who just turned twenty seven,
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: but he was playing it when he was fifteen, you know.
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: And fourteen and thirteen does the Dolphins fan. No, that's
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: the older one Packers fan. This is the Packers Okay,
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: so we'll see how he is with this. I was
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: gonna say, if it was a Dolphins fan, you can
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: understand leaning into college football instead of Madden.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Yeah, no, kidding, no kidding.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: And I didn't mention, you know about during the pandemic
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: the Big Twelve play by play broadcasters, we actually broadcast
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: play by play of Madden of each each school in
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: the Big Twelve their campus championship game. So I did
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: play by play of two guys playing Madden against one another.
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: And I'm guessing you were calling it off of a
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: separate remote location, off a monitor.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: In my house. Yeah, because it was during the pandemic.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: So watching it on a monitor and calling it.
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: And you're calling it straight up as if you're in
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: the video game itself, as if it was real life.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: Yeah, because I didn't know what was going to happen.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: I had the players actually had charts done up for it.
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: So we were asked, now, were you calling he's got
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: ninety nine speed or were you reading off stats like
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: it was a real broadcast.
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: There were some stats, there were some stats, but you
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: were mainly, you know, you were mainly just calling what
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: you saw because the game moved so quickly. And then
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: once you had the campus championships, then you play the
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: other schools in the Big twelve get a conference champion.
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: So I only got one game because it was Texas
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: against Iowa State and Iowa State was good, and so
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: John Waller is the play by play voice of the Cyclones,
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: did it. I think he did play by play in
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: the first half and I did the second half, or
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: maybe he did it when they had the ball and
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: I did it when Texas had the ball.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: Could you imagine if real broadcast were like that?
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: I'm telling you it was.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: That's when we started saying, Okay, we're going to have
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: to do some stuff on remis. We have remote broadcast
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: off monitors, and the ESPN certainly is leaned into it
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: because it's a cost saver for them to do it
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: that way.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: I think a lot of folks would pay to have
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: Craig Way in there. Madden.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: I've never been approached by the Madden people to do that.
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: All right, more coming up here on Sports Radio AM
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: thirteen under the zone of the IR Radio app. It's
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: interesting that you shows this from traveling Willberry's George Harrison's
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: lead boys, right hear, and then the others get involved.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: Obviously, last night, Lynda.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: And I watched the Martin Scorsese documentary on George Harrison.
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: I'm meaning to watch that.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: Yeah, living in the Material World, and it's been around
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: a while, and this first time I've really had an
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: operation cent out of watch and we watched part one
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: last night.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: It was really good. It was good.
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: So I'm looking forward to part two, which is his
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: post Beatles career, which would include obviously.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Traveling Willberry's there on that.
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: Ryan, let me see if I can help you out
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: a little bit here, he said, it did the University
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: of Texas to go to the conference there now for money.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: The games are all about money as far as you
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: need to pay or do this or do that. You know,
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: good and well, it's more and more money. This has
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: nothing to do with the University of This is he
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: a sports They're the ones getting the money off of that.
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: It's it's it's it's not the University of Texas or
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: any other school for that matter.
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: Now. The players and coaches and universities are getting a
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: very small slice. Yeah, and that doesn't change based on this.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: No.
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: No, this is about the company that's doing it. Ryan,
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: it's not. It's not about the universities. Somebody said, do
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: you have oh, Jake, Hey, Jake, you have meta period glasses.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: If you do sometime as soon as you get a
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: chance too on personal period time, I close your eyes
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: and see hot work for you that way. I have
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: never heard of meta period glasses.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: Okay, I don't know what that is.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: AI glasses.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. But Ryan, you can
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: explain that to him.
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I've never I've never worn them. I know, uh,
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: they're catching on, but I've never worn them. Or tried
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: them before.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Okay, all right, if you want to explain that, right.
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: I also don't wear glasses, so it might it might
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: raise some suspicions if people saw me a random all
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: of a sudden with the new pair. Oh yeah, they're readers.
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: Yeah no, don't worry about it.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: That's a good point. That's that's a good point.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: I just go with regular old standard readers for mine.
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: So Jake mentioned that if you're in the home run derby,
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: you better have Netflix or access to Netflix to watch
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: it tonight.
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's on Netflix. It's it's not on ESPN.
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: Women's World Cups on Netflix too. Next year they're trying
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: to tiptoe their way into the sports world.
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: Well the NFL games, Yeah, that they've had. So don't
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: they get a playoff game? Oh?
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: They yeah, I think they will. That was a big Yeah,
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: we've forgotten about that because it was a big hoopla
- 1:24:44Speaker 3: about this time last year when the NFL made that decision.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, the prime video, of course, was
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: the ones that did that with that Chief Dolphins game
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: that was so frigid a couple of seasons back. The
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: that was the first time they've done that a playoff
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: game on a streaming service.
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: Oh you know what, I don't think they have the
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: playoff game, but they've got a Christmas game. Yeah, and
- 1:25:09Speaker 3: then this year it's expanding. They've got the first ever
- 1:25:12Speaker 3: Thanksgiving Eve game is going to be on Netflix.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Rams Packers it's a good game too.
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: And then Week eighteen they've got a late season Saturday.
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: So I'm guessing that means the league's going to put
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: a standalone Week eighteen game that will matter on Netflix.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay, so.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: If you are planning to watch Homer in Derby, you'll
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: need access to Netflix either. I'm sure sports bars will
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: have it, you know, I would imagine most because this
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: is one of those one of those deserted island sports days.
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: There's not much happening in the way of sports. There's
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: no World Cup games.
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: I'm still not watching the Summer League.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: You got Summer League, but not for you.
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: No, this is yeah, no no things.
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: Okay, So they did a poll of the ESPN riders
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: and said who's going to win the home run Derby
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: and who will be the runner up. Jeff Passon says
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: Junior camin Aro is going to win it over Murakami
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: closed last year, David Johanfeld has Schwarbro over Camon Aro,
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: Buster Oney has Bryce Harper as you are predicting to
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: win it. He's got him over cammon Aaro. They've got
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: Camon Arrow. Just about everybody likes Camon Arrow.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: Well, you think about the guys coming into this home
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: run Derberry with the most real life home run hitting momentum.
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: Nobody had a better June in this lineup than Cam
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: and Arrow.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: Yeah, and Jesse Rodgers is Camon Arow over Schwarber Castillo.
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: This is the one. I like Schwarber over Harper. Ah, Okay,
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: I see that.
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: Who do you think the crowd would root for?
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: Uh? I think Schwarber if it came down to it,
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: don't you think. I mean, they're both Phillies. But well,
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: Shorber has yet to win a Derby, despite his power
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: surge in recent years, but he came through for the
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: Nationalague in Atlanta last year in the first All Star
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: Game swing off seem so I think they might in
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: Harper's won one right in Washington.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: Yeah, in Washington. He played for the Nationals right.
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: In twenty eighteen. Yeah, I thought he was never going
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: to leave Washington at that point. I talked about this
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: on the air last week.
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, all right, who will hit the longest home run?
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: And how far?
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: Cagli that's what passed and says four hundred and eighty
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: six feet. Sean Phillis's Caninaro was for eighty nine all
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: he says, Schwarbur was five to eleven. Rogers has cagnly
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: owned with five six and Castillo as Schwarber with four
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: ninety two. So anyway, there's some uh that and whatever
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: it cost me to get my wife's coffee these days
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: at Starbucks. She actually is. She actually learned from my
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: daughter a hack to basically get the drink you want
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: without paying an additional like two bucks or two fifty.
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: How does that work? It's all in the ingredients. How
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: you listed, like the extra shot or this or that.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: Oh okay, so she's doing it completely legal.
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: It's a workaround. It's just a workaround. Okay.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: She learned that from my daughter.
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: It is about don't listen to this, don't close Linda's loophole.
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: Yeah right, it isn't.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: It isn't like the woman that's just going in and
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: stealing people's stuff off the off the order ahead when
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: you go through there.
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: Yeah, those drinks are free.
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: Yeah, he's going in there and just lifting them right
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: off the deal. Have a good day, went over with
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: a big smile for the barista, and you're going there.
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: Yeah that's me, Katie C. Yeah, that's me.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: Have a good day.
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: I mean I always tell them thank you and have
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: a good day. Could you imagine if every time I
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: was doing that it wasn't my drink.
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: Yeah, And lately, you know, they've gotten into writing the
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: little messages on the cup. I had an enjoy when
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: written on my yesterday. Linda's favorite one was one time
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: she didn't notice that she got down the road looking
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: and it was listen, Linda, that that famous thing online.
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: But anyway, so yeah, that's there was a workaround. It's
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: just it wasn't that there wasn't wasn't anything out of line.
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: There wasn't anything she wasn't getting that she didn't deserve.
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: It was just it was following the rules of what
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: what you could get with this shot or that shot,
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: or this hand in or that and it basically added
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: up to the drink that she was having to pay
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: an extra two to fifty four that you could get
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: for two dollars and fifty cents least.
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: So this was was this leading? Was this related back
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: to Netflix?
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: Uh?
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: Well, I don't know, Okay, I thought, I thought it, Yeah,
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: can folks have a workaround off Netflix? I don't know
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: that you can.
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: Well, so, so I'm like a lot of folks around
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: my age, still benefiting from the parental accounts on some
- 1:29:59Speaker 3: of these. So I've been geo blocked from my Netflix
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: on the TV because it's got to connect to my
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: Wi Fi. But if I use my phone for some
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: reason and then screencasts that to the TV, it's my workaround. See,
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: now that's an illegal workaround.
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: What you're doing When I mentioned what Linda was doing
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: was actually completely within the rules. It was just a
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: different way of lining up instead of going a shortcut,
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: give me this particular drink with this boom, you get
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: hit with the price.
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: This was I want this with this shot, with this.
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: Add in all legal, all available, and did it and
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: it just turned out less what you're doing is downright
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: stealing cable?
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: Is that? What that is?
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: Stealing cable?
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: A streaming version of it.
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: Look, Craig, I could just as easily find an illegal
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: stream on all this yes, i'd be behind. I get
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: it spoiled by my over zealous friends texting in. But
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: those are the type of friends you want in your life.
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: Where we're texting you during the home run derby.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: But still I have a brother who does that constantly, texting.
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: Like you gotta wait thirty seconds, dude, yeah yeah, although
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: with you, I mean you're off it at the game.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: So yeah.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: Or my brother will text me while we're watching the
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: exact same game in real time.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: I'm like, dude, I'm watching it. You don't have to
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: text me that I'm watching it.
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: If you want to make a comment on what you
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: just saw, okay, but don't say hey, so and so
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: just goring.
- 1:31:24Speaker 3: I know, I just saw it.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: Stop it.
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: I just said good.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: Night to it.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: Yeah right, all right, well we're coming up here on
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: thirteen under the zone.
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: Take it upside.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: A little further explanation from our friend Ryan, who said
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: he was just using University of Texas as an example.
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: I get it.
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: It's our only point was that, you know, any college,
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: any university, isn't going to factor into that EA Sports
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: thing that's all about the game company. Off of that,
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: and then you know, we were wondering about what he
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: was talking about about the metaglasses, he said, and they're AI,
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: they're artificial intelligent. I didn't know if you wore glasses
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: or not, you know, because Ryan is sightless. He said,
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: you might want to try them just to see what
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: you think. But you don't wear glasses to begin with.
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: You're right, you don't need them yet. So right, I
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: went a long time without needing glasses, and I still
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: have really good distance vision.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: But I was having a little trouble reading that.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: I went the doctor h an eye doctor, and he
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: said at the time, I think it was forty seven
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: at the time, and he said, I'm like, well, you know,
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: that's about the time you would started hitting it that
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: sort of thing.
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: I've only noticed it a couple of times in darker arenas,
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: not necessarily stadiums. In arenas, if there's something on a
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: screen far away without good contrast, yeah, I could have
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: a little trouble with it. And I do wear blue
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: lights sometimes when I'm going to sleep watching something or
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: going to sleep on FaceTime, as someone in a long
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: distance relationship does, and that can help you not get
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: so over, you know, stimulated by the screen.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: I see, Okay, all right, but.
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: I don't wear, you know, reading glasses or anything like that.
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: All Right, So we were talking about the All Star
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: Game and we mentioned Bryce Harper. I thought this was
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: a pretty interesting story that came out today. Today is
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: the people hear me say this a lot when the
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: long words are playing, Like say in an NCAA basketball turn,
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: I'll say.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Practice and press conference day, that kind of thing.
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: They do the same thing with the All Star Game
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: where they take batting practice and they have different media availabilities.
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: By the way, for folks who've asked me in the
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: past because they could tell about my disdain for Barry Bonds,
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: it wasn't about him being a San Francisco Giant or
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: not playing for the Dodgers. I like them when they
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: played for the Pirates. It wasn't because of that. It
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: wasn't even so much about the steroids, although that obviously factored.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: No.
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: I was standing almost as close to him as I
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: am to you right now at the ninety five All
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: Star Game in Arlington. Batting practice was going on, and
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: the reporters were standing in one area near the on
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: deck circle, and he was waiting and going to take
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: his swings, and a kid couldn't have been more than
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: seven or eight. Was right there by the rail. He's
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: like ten feet of mister BID's gonna have autograph, mister Bonds.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: And most players, if they don't want to mess with that,
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: they'll just ignore it, you know, they won't do anything.
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: A lot of players were going over and siding it's
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: an All Star game, it's a batting practice on it.
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: All Star Game.
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: Barry Bond stood there in the on deck, Sir, I
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: saw it and heard it when my own ears saw it.
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: With my own eyes.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: Mister BID's gonna have autograph, mister Brian. He turned around
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: and said, f off, kid.
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: It's like a seventy eight year old kid.
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: And the parent was standing behind the kid. The parent
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: just glared at him, took the kid away.
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: What does that mean, dad?
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: Yeah? Right, yeah? H Do you want to ask me
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: how I feel about Barry Bonds? That's why?
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: How it's just all that in ninety five of the
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: All Star Game in Arlington on the press conference.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: It wasn't even a game day, it's the batting practice day.
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: But you know, something must erupted him the wrong way,
- 1:35:26Speaker 3: not about that kid, about something else.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: It's just you know, a lot of people say this
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: is how he was a surly guy, especially when he
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: later in his career and then when all of the
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: stuff started surfacing about the clear and the cream and
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: the you know and all the steroid allegations and all
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. So that happened on an All
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: Star batting practice day today, they had one of those,
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: and Bryce Harper said that he did not know how
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: Fan Duel would use a personalized video that he made
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: for a customer who has since accused FanDuel in a
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: lawsuit of taking advantage of his gambling addiction. It was
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: a statement post on Instagram, and Bryce Harper said he
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: would not have made the video if he had known
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: FanDuel's intent to use it as part of a VIP
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: promotion on the betting habits of the customer, Terry Thompson.
- 1:36:26Speaker 3: Here's at the video. If you want me to roll, sure,
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: let's have it.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: Hey Terry, what's up? Brother? Amen?
- 1:36:32Speaker 6: Your host Brittany from FanDuel wanted to make sure your
- 1:36:34Speaker 6: Thanksaiving was extra special. So I just want to hop
- 1:36:37Speaker 6: on here and with you and your family wonderful Thanksgiving. Tom,
- 1:36:41Speaker 6: I said, hello, I appreciate all the support through the years,
- 1:36:44Speaker 6: and I just hope you have a great day, enjoy
- 1:36:47Speaker 6: it and let's see you soon.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: Oh nice not to swear a name that was bleeped
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: out right.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: So he makes a video.
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: And then fan duel apparently used as part of a
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: VIP promotion, and he said quote, I did not know
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: FanDuel will do this. I did not consent to it,
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: and FanDuel had no right to do it. He said
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: he received a request on cameo back in November twenty
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: twenty four to read the provided script for a personal
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: holiday video for Terry. The Philadelphia Choir published portions of
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: the video in a story last Thursday, and Harper included
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: a screenshot of the cameo request with his statement. So
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: Thompson back in March, sued FanDuel and his VIP host
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: Britney Morgan, along with DraftKings, the NFL, and the league's
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: official data distributor, Genius Sports, claiming that the sports books
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: caused him to become addicted, leading to approximately two million
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: dollars in betting losses. And again Harper said quote, had
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: I know FanDuel's true intent, I would not have made
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: the video. The same is true had I known anything
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: about Terry or a situation, or about any alleged partnership
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: between Cameo and FanDuel. The pseudo ledges that Morgan Attack
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: contacted Thompson with promotional offers and gifts to encourage him
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: to wager more on FanDuel, including tickets and hotel accommodations
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: to attend the Super Bowl. Major League Baseball's Collective Bargaining
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: Agreement does allow players to do promotions with sports books
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: as long as they do not authorize the use of
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: their name, uniform number, immager likeness, or promote betting on baseball.
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: What do you think they're going to do if they
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: allow them to do promotion with a sports book? What
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: possible connection otherwise could the sports book have other than
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: the connect the person with it, in this.
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: Case Price Harper? Oh yeah, Bryce Harper's with us.
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: That's silly that MLB says, Oh, it's okay, you know,
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: as long as it doesn't have any that. FanDuel refer
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: to its previous statement saying that its employees are trained
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: to recognize and flag signs of problem gambling and offer
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: and tools. You think, really, so, as we continue to
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: review and strengthen our policies to ensure we have the
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: industry strongest consumer protection initiatives.
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that those the industry is strongest right now is
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: not strong enough. I mean there is in the NBA
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: right now with the Malik Beasley story, with the with
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: the poker game story with involving Terry Rozier in Major
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: League Baseball with Emmanuel class and this is one of
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: the best ten closers in the game and he's never
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: gonna play again.
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: Yeah, he's out of the game. And to say nothing,
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: to say nothing of it's seeping into the college realm
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: now with what happened first in Iowa State and then obviously.
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I wasn't putting soares being the same category because
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: as far as we know, it wasn't impacting the outcome
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: of games. But it certainly impacts the integrity of the
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: game when you've got a player on your roster placing
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: bets on the team.
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: Right, and and the age old argument about the Pete
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: Rose thing when they had Roses back saying, hey, he
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: was only betting on his team to win. He wasn't
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: betting on as Major League Baseball said, if you're betting
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: on your own team to win in your urgency to
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: win the bet, you might make moves that you might
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: otherwise not make, therefore compromising the fabric of the game.
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: So that's where it went back and forth with Pete Rose.
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: It no longer matters now since rosees pass and he's
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: off the suspended list. Whether he gets voted in is
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: an entirely different issue because there's going to be some
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: people that you don't say, no matter what, he didn't
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: belong yet because of what he did, and that's you know,
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: that's the cardinal sin, just like sores be found out,
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: that's the cardinal sin. With regard to the NCAAA. You
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: can't go down that road. You just can't go down
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: that road. Otherwise it's going to cost you. You're, in
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: this case collegiate career. And he will be eligible for
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: the supplemental or the NFL Draft in twenty twenty seven.
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: He will be eligible for that.
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: Do you think it's right the NFL suspended him. I'll
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: put you on the spot.
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: Well, because of what happened. It happened so late in again, anyway,
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: they couldn't make the adjustment to do it, to do
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: for a supplement, or they had nobody else going into
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: a supplemental draft. It wouldn't have made any sense to
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: have him included at that point, and they hadn't had
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: time to take a full look.
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: At it to see.
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: So, yes, it was the proper move to make in
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: the moment at the time. If they'd had another few
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: months and could have looked at it longer, studied it longer,
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: had their legal team take a closer look at it,
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: they might have had a different outcome. Not in that
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: shorter timeframe to be able to do it all right.
- 1:41:47Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: program on thirteen under the Zone
