Latest / Performance Car Ownership with Gary / I Went From Porsche to Lotus - Here's the Truth!
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Evolving, you know.
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: What do you want to do?
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: After owning numerous Porsches and other cool sports cars, Abe purchased this 2024 Lotus Amira V6 manual six months ago.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: In this video, we're riding along with Abe as he shares exactly what it's like to live with Lotus's latest sports car.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: While Abe drives, we're discussing his complete ownership experience from why he chose the V6 manual over the AMG four cylinder to the real-world ownership experience that most reviewers don't even mention.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Is uh the 575 Marinello six speed I had, which was a very classy car and uh beautiful drive, beautiful engine and transmission.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: The chassis, you know, was okay, but it was very finicky in terms of its cosmetic needs.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: It was uh it was a very needy mistress.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: The worst kind?
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: And you owned a bunch of Porsche, didn't you?
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I've owned um, let me see.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: I I started off my my Porsche career in uh 1988 uh 928 S4.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: And then um and then I had a Corvette, and then I had uh a couple of nine forty-four turbos, uh I had uh nine nine seven um uh C2, then uh uh a GT two and a two thousand and eight G T two.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Widomaker and a nine twenty-eight GTS and then a uh twenty fourteen GT three and then a uh twenty twenty GT four, and now I have uh uh uh uh nine nine one and nine eleven Turbo S.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: So which car did this replace?
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Neither of those.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Either of those?
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: So this car I was driving the GTR.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: Oh yes.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: My fourth, my fourth uh uh GTR, and I was using it as a as a daily and a winter car, and it really you know I thought it deserved a better life than that, so I sold it and um and I was looking for a six-speed um sports car.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: And so uh and so I read about the Amira and uh I wanted to have the experience of having uh a lotus, and so um and so I found one and went to uh Gentry Lane, um, where it was a truly painless, pleasant buying experience.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: It was really great.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: And uh and uh this was the color I wanted, and uh we made a deal in five minutes and then talked cars with the guys.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: Your GT4 is sort of a competitor of this car, this Amira.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: So throughout this uh interview, we'll talk uh we'll kind of compare the two.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: Is that alright?
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Sure, this is more uh GTS um spec.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, the two are very similar.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: I agree, I agree.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Similar in paper.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is 400 horsepower, so does the uh so does the uh uh GTS.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: So the GT4, um, I mean it's very similar, right?
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: So so why why this exact mirror?
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Like why did you choose this mirror?
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: This one?
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Yes, because of the exterior color and the interior.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: And you're also looking for the V6, right?
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I was looking for the V6.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: I was looking for a stick shift car.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: And and that's primarily why you wanted the V6?
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: Because you could that you couldn't get the four-cylinder with the stick shift, right?
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you couldn't get it, it's only available.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, the AMG I4 is uh only available with uh uh paddle shift.
- 4:20unknown: Right.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: And uh have you ever driven a Lotus before you drove this one?
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: I drove a 1962 Lotus.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: Oh wow, that's cool.
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: So they've come a long way.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, even every generation of Lotus before this one, the the step to this one was a long way.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so the last generation Exiege, which I don't think we got in uh North America, um was um was uh a two-door fixed coupe, but it had um four quad lights in back.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: And I I really liked that car, but it was unable to be purchased here.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: The other Lotus that I've liked is the Lotus A Clat, which is an old, old number key, you know, front engine rear-wheel drive.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: But uh, but I've always liked I've always liked uh Lotus because I remember driving the 62A LAN, you know, the feel of the gear shift was like, you know, bolt action in a rifle.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: It was just really, really uh uh direct.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: And so um uh but this is my first experience owning a uh an English car, which is half Japanese, but what what attracted you specifically to the Lotus and or the the Amira?
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: Was it like its specialness or like like what specifically attracted you?
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Well the Amira I think is just a beautiful design.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean it's just a it's it's such a pleasure to uh to uh look at.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: And you know, I bought the car without without driving it.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: You know, I saw the interior, I liked it, everything felt everything felt the hand, the pedals were well placed for heel and toe, didn't have to do any, you know, pedal modifications.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: And it was just um I bought it on reputation and from what I've read.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: And I haven't been disappointed.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: And did you do much research or just over the last period of time you've been thinking about it, thinking about it, thinking about it?
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: I did research, yeah.
- 6:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, you did?
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: And uh and what uh what in the research, what specifically appealed to you about its design, uh tactility, and uh handling.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: You know, so um so like driving this as opposed to many of the other cars I've owned is a very immersive, soulful experience, you know, it's you have the exhaust note.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: You feel the wheel, you feel almost every degree of slip angle of of the front wheels, and you know the car communicates even even at the low speed that we're going, you know, it gives me a very clear idea of what's going on with the road, and um and you know, it's just very it's just a a very nice car to have a conversation with.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: And um and the uh suspension, you know, it's double wishbone, and uh, you know, it's fairly sophisticated.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, it's I I think it's uh more sophisticated suspension system than what than uh the McPherson struts on the uh K-Man.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: That sort of was uh to me was borne out on the uh track.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Um one of the complaints I've had about the uh about the Cayman is the uh rear end, the rear of the car, the rear suspension never filled me with a lot of security.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: You know, I was uh I was always uh I was always on guard, and I felt like at the limit, like if you think of port eight, at most port the limit, you know, if you just want to slightly adjust the attitude of the car, you know, it you would adjust the gas pedal by micrometers, and the car was very, I thought, would over react, whereas this has a very linear, to me at the limit, had a very linear kind of feel and was more predictable.
- 8:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, super important.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: And I get it.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: So we touched on aesthetics a little bit earlier, but uh, so what aesthetically appeals to you most about this car?
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: Curves.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Curves! Guys love curves.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: And is there a certain angle from which the the car is most appealing to you?
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: I like the quarter angle best.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: But the car looks good to me from from all angles.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: I think the least flattering angle was is directly side side view.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: But but I I think the car is beautifully proportioned.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, so yeah, it's it's it looks like a near exotic.
- 9:39SPEAKER_03: Well, it looks exotic enough to be an exotic on its own, right?
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: You know, but it's uh there's a big step from this in terms of uh the next level of exotic.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, yeah, there is, and um, you know, the next level of an exotic is uh, you know, that would have the kind of visceral look appeal would be, you know, I'm just not interested in that.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: And what about the interior?
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: What do you think of the look of the interior?
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: I like the interior.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: I've always I've always preferred round gauges as opposed to uh as opposed to a linear uh tachometer.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: I don't mind a digital speedo, but I like a tachometer to be round.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: But you know, that's that's neither here nor there.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Um I find that the gear shift is a bit too close to me as as a driver, but you know, that doesn't you know that doesn't affect me one way or the other.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: You know, you get used to it.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: What do you think about the interior abe of uh this car compared to, well, let's talk about your compared to your GT4 or your other Porsches?
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Well, I've always liked the Porsche instrument panel.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: You know, I find that um I find that um in terms of the uh settings for the car, and in terms of um, you know, going through the different menus, I find the stock a very handy thing where you can you can look through the the different menus without taking your eyes off the road.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: This, like a lot of other cars, has a screen with uh with you know a whole bunch of icons.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: A whole bunch of icons.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: And so it does divert if you're going to do something which you don't have muscle memory of, it really does divert your attention away from the road.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: And that's one thing that I don't like about this car and other uh modern cars, you know.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: It's just I mourn the loss of knobs and buttons.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: You know, so um the really good thing about the interior of this car, which is a bit better than the Porsche, is the visibility because these are two big mirrors, and all the blind spots are are covered, and I don't have any you know qualms about backing up in tight spaces or anything else like this, or worried about my uh my uh uh blind spot.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: In the GT4, I I bought uh you know the convex mirror for it for the driver's side too, so to give me more blind spot coverage, but this is good right out of the box.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: So a couple of the unique things about the interior of this car is the exposed uh gear linkage uh on the side of the console and also the start-stop switch with uh the red cover on it.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: Think of those things.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Gimmicky or do you kind of like well, you know, I mean the lifting the cover for the you know uh start-stop thing, I guess that's uh I don't know, they maybe want to make you feel as if you're you know taking off from an aircraft carrier, you know.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: I think that's a bit gimmicky.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: I think that I think that the exposed uh gear shift uh mechanism is gimmicky because I'm not gonna be looking at that.
- 13:37unknown: No.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: You know, and also the uh the uh uh throttle you can look in the mirror and see the throttle.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, the back.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: You know, that doesn't that that doesn't to me doesn't serve any useful purpose.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna be when I'm accelerating, the last place I'm gonna be looking is in the rear view mirror for the throttle.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: So that's uh that makes uh perfect sense.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: And so there are other, you know, things.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: The um the car has a dipstick.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Uh but when the car is hot, you gotta stick your hand right into the hot engine bay to pull out the dipstick.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: And you can, you know, it's not the most comfortable thing in the world because there are you know, there are exposed bits you can bump against, but you know, it's alright.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: I mean the car isn't the car isn't without its uh quirks, but but once you get into it, you know, all is forgiven.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: That's for sure.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: What's the body what's the body made out of it?
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: It's composite.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I can't believe, like, you know, composite is much different than fiberglass.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't know the I don't know the specifics.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: I don't know anything.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: Well, you're right.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: But the thing is, when I look at the car, it looks metal in terms of how smooth it is, how even it is, ripple free.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Whereas if you look at a Corvette, you can you know you can definitely tell the difference that that's not a steel car because it's not even smooth.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: You know, I I don't know, you know, I'm kind of blind to stuff like that, you know.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's uh people might say, well, how can you stand the uh body gaps and that kind of says you know, I don't see them when I'm driving.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: You know, like that isn't something that really enters into my mind because I'm I'm I'm more interested in dynamics than I am about about uh about that.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: As long as the thing doesn't rattle, I'm happy.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's right.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: And does it?
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: This doesn't rattle.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: Excellent.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: So this has the support suspension, correct?
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: Yes, it does.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: Do you find it too stiff?
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: No.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: I don't.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: For my taste.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: I think I I think other people do.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Uh but you know, I drive my Viper in the city, and that's you know, waste different than this.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: So it doesn't really bother me that much.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: And when I first looked at this car, I was convinced it was black.
- 16:28SPEAKER_03: But then I looked at it a little bit longer and I realized it's green.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: It's incredibly large.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Do they call this a certain color or it's called verdant green?
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: And a lot of people comment on that from certain angles that I've read.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: You know, from certain angles it looks black, and others it looks green.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, beauty's in the eye of the beholder.
- 16:49SPEAKER_03: So, in terms of how this car is optioned or how this car was set up, um, because you um basically bought it off the lot, right?
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: So the car doesn't come with um the car doesn't come with a huge menu of uh of options.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: You have the sport suspension, you have the engine, and I think interior color.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: And that's really about it.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: So anything that you're missing?
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Anything that in the six months you have the car that uh you said, oh, I wish it had uh right off the bat, um, you know, I I I I thought it had Sirius XM.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Satellite, but it doesn't.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: But it has Apple CarPlay, and if you and if you have the Sirius app, you can just run it off the uh so it's no big deal.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: The only thing that I think that is missing is is that I would like more, I would have liked more gauges.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: I would have liked an oil temperature gauge.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, okay.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: You know, and and just because uh you know, I would have also liked an oil pressure gauge that that uh that was uh readily accessible.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: Makes sense.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: So this car has an Alcantara squared off steering wheel.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: First of all, how do you like the Alcantera?
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I prefer leather.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: And because um you know Alcantara gets old really quick, I think.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: You know, with uh oil from the hands and stuff, you know, and uh and uh you know, and I'm gonna drive with gloves on, or or you know, a scarf and a little bit.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: Um so uh I l I like a leather wheel, but the shape doesn't bother me particularly.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, people have criticized the the square shape, but you know, it fits with the instrument cluster, so you know, it's it's it's not a an issue for me.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: And how often do you drive the car?
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Um I drive it um usually a week at a time.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: You know, because I have a few other cars that I I I like to drive, but when I drive it, it does it does um you know daily daily duty.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: The um I find the seats very comfortable.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Uh I went on a on a road trip through northern Ontario and Quebec, and you know, we were you know sp specifically driving uh back roads, and I found the seats to be very comfortable.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: And did they require a lot of adjustment to make them comfortable for you, or are they just are comfortable?
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: No, they're just comfortable.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: I just I haven't fiddled with lumbar support or anything.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: I just fiddle with uh rake of the seat pack and and back and forth.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: So we're talking about seats now, and I know we're gonna talk a little bit later about uh uh taking this car on the track, but how do you f how did you find specifically these seats when you took the car on the track compared to the carbon buckets you had in the GT4?
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: I didn't have carbon buckets.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: No, okay, no, I had I had the stock uh or I had uh seats that uh I didn't have the 18 ways, I had the one in between the base and I forget what they were.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Uh um and um and I found them to be equivalent.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: The car the carbon buckets, I mean uh, you know, people would film me, film me getting out of a car, you know, and I'm sure it could make it onto YouTube and go viral.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: You mentioned earlier that the pedals were located well for heel and toe.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: And uh does this car have auto blip?
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: No.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: No, but your GT4 did, didn't it?
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: My GT4 did.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: And I used it.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Did you?
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: You know, in the city I like I like driving stick.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: On the track, you know, uh with with auto blip and PDKs and stuff like that, it's really very good on the track.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: So I didn't mind having auto blip uh in the GT4.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And I used it.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: I didn't find the pedals that you know that great in terms of in terms of uh uh placement.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Uh I find them much better on this car.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: But the inside door latches are a lot better on this car than on the GT4.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, and yeah, you know, it's uh Lotus decided, well, we don't need to save the two ounces, you know.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: People know how to get out of the car.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: They don't need a tutorial.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: You know, pull the strap.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: But storage space-wise, I think this car has quite a bit of storage space when you consider behind the seat and the area behind the engine.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, not as much as the Cayman.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: No.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: No.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: The Cayman had a frunk and uh and uh a good sized rear boot.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Uh this the car is mid-engine, but the front trunk doesn't uh doesn't open.
- 22:27unknown: Right, right.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: It's not for storage.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: So what about when you're driving in terms of things like speed bumps or um low driveways with dips and things like that?
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Do you find this this car bottoms out uh you hit the front splitter more readily or not?
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: No, no, it's okay.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: I think it you know, I think that you have to be aware that, you know, the car is low and approach uh like uh an inclined driveway at an angle.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: But the car doesn't bottom out.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: The suspension is actually excellent in terms of its suppleness and in terms of how the springs and shocks are are matched to each other.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: This has non-adjustable uh shocks, and uh so um, you know, it's it's really just right and gives a supple ride and uh and it's firm and controlled and is okay on the track too.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: It's a bit soft for like serious track work, but uh then again, so is the GT4 in my opinion.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: It needed to, in that car, I had to put in Swift Springs and I put in um a DSC uh computer, uh shock computer.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Uh which helped a bit, but this car hasn't required any fiddling.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: But when you stop to get gas or uh go into a store or something like that, do people ask you what kind of car this is?
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: So, you know, every once in a while, um you know, I see uh uh a youth with a baseball cap hanging out of a car taking taking uh a picture, you know, of your Amira.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Of the Amira, yeah, yeah.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: Well, not of me, I mean believe me.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: And lots of people and lots of people ask about it and give a uh uh thumbs up.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: It isn't a car you see frequently, you know.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: And when you tell people that it's a lotus, do they know what a lotus is?
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Some do, some don't.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: And what kind of reaction do you get from other Porsche owners that uh that you're driving this Lotus with the R.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: No, you know, most of the um Porsche owners who I hang out with belong to PCA and drive on the track.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: So we all have I mean a lot of us have different cars that we drive on the track.
- 25:02unknown: Right.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: You know, so I I don't think that anybody really cares.
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: They just appreciate a performance car.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I think so.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: I like I can't speak for the um, you know, for the uh general uh public where Porsche ownership is more maybe more of a status thing than than uh than a purchase for its um trackabilities.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: But amongst, you know, our peer group, you know, I think differences are celebrated.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: Have you taken part in any Lotus?
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: Is there a Lotus group that you belong to or that kind of thing?
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: What's that like?
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: I belong to the Lotus Club.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: But you know, with my work schedule, I don't get out you know I don't have an opportunity to go to anything.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: It's when I get the newsletter and read and you know.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: But I I don't really have the uh time to um to uh attend uh social events um with my current schedule.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, no.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: I just wondered uh different car club clubs or or different market clubs have a kind of a different vibe I've heard from other people, and I was just curious if you notice any kind of a different kind of a vibe from the Lotus Group.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: Well, I got introduced to the Lotus Group at the BMW Club where a guy was driving a Lotus 7.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: So he asked me, do you belong to the Lotus Club?
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: And I said, no, I don't.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: So he gave me the contact.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: So that's how that's how I got hooked up with the uh with the uh Lotus Club.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: But I I think most of the uh Lotus owners are, you know, kind of hardcore gearheads, you know, who are who are into the cars for you know the engineering of it as opposed to a statement.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: So a lot has been said about the hydraulic steering in this car.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: It's one of the very few cars left with hydraulic steering uh Porsche's done away, well, sorry, the electronic route quite a while now.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: Can you really feel the difference?
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: I find the steering absolutely exquisite in this thing.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: Like you can just feel it telegraphs what the tires are doing, what the contact patch is doing, like loud and clear, you know, it's just very and it it reminds me what it what it reminds me of is driving a 70s vintage 911 that's in good shape with manual steering.
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: This car is supercharged?
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Have you ever had a supercharged car before?
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: I don't think so.
- 28:01SPEAKER_03: No, but you've had plenty of turbocars.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: I've had plenty of turbocars.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: So how would you compare this supercharged car to the turbocharged cars you've had more recent ones, obviously, um to your more recent turbocharged car.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Well in terms of power delivery.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: It's linear.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: Whereas the other turbos aren't?
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: Well, even the uh 9-11 Turbo S I has, you can still detect or I can still detect a little bit of of you know um non-linear let me put it this way, non-linearity in terms of response to the throttle.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: So what about uh the red line?
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: So this has a around the 6,800, 7,000 RPM red line versus the GT4 at around 8,000.
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: Do you do you wish this car had a higher red line?
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: No.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, no, not really.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, to me, the red line doesn't make a difference in the kind of driving uh in the kind of driving I do.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: It um it makes a difference in terms of on on track so you can set up to a lower gear and have the red range, the rev range, so so you don't um need to buy a new engine.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, so um but uh but in terms of um you know seeing as this car is mostly uh street driven, you know, really I don't I don't need to go to Redland.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: Does the Amira does it like to be driven hard?
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: When we went on our trip uh to Northern Ontario and Quebec, there were many two-lane windy roads which we attacked with some enthusiasm and didn't miss a beat.
- 30:07SPEAKER_03: No problem.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: And what about the shifter action?
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: How do you compare the shifter?
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, lovely compared to the GT4?
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: Lovely.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, lovelier?
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: Lovelier, yes.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: So I found I found you could feel a lot of I could feel the rubber in in the GT4 shifter.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: This to me feels like what it felt like when I drove the 62E LAN, just click, snick, snick, snick, you know, no um, no slop.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: And this doesn't have that super tall gearing like the GT4 had.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: No.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: I never really worried too much about the uh you know the gearing in the GT4, but what I really like about this car is that you can if you choose your shift points properly, it's just it's just a single surge of acceleration as you go through the gears.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: And it's nice.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: And the shifting action is great so you can shift gears quickly, and it can you know, just it's a very satisfying uh activity.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: Do you find that when the car is cold or at lower speeds, it's uh like it's difficult to move the gear shift or there's a noise or clunking or anything like that?
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: No.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: What about the metal gear shift knob?
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: Does it get hot?
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: A bit.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: But uh that was one of the criticisms I had of the Ferrari Marinello, was that it had a metal gear shift, and I drove that thing as a daily, and if I parked it at work outside, I would come into the car, and I, you know, I couldn't shift.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: I I had to wait until the car cooled down before I could uh uh start shifting it.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: What about clutch weight and engagement?
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: It's the clutch weight is to me perfect, lots of feel, you can feel the uptake point very clearly, and you can you can be very precise with it.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: So this car has double wishbone suspension at all four corners?
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: That's my understanding.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and uh so I believe you're saying it just works incredibly well.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: Well, it does in terms of linearity of response to the throttle and to uh and to throttle loads, you know.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it it does, you know.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, um I mean the only um the only thing I have to compare it to, I guess, would be the uh the uh GT4 and um and to me the car to me the car feels um you know the springs and the shocks and uh and that feel as if they're meant for each other, and that uh and that there are no compromises.
- 33:14SPEAKER_03: And does this car have different driving modes like a sport mode or anything like that that you switch it into?
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so this car has a race mode where it turns off all the uh nannies.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: Um but it does it just changes the the engine responsiveness to the uh throttle.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: It doesn't change uh suspension or anything.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 33:39SPEAKER_03: The suspension is fixed.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: And is that something whenever you get in the car you have to change, or is it something you rarely use and you just turn it on when you want it?
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: No, it starts off in tour.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: I like it, I like it in sport because the throttle is more responsive.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: Uh and uh and uh sounds better, you know.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Like I like the sound of the car.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: No, no, it's one of the great things about having a car like this is the sound, that's for sure.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: What about the buttons on the steering wheel?
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: You ever hit those by mistake?
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't like buttons on a wheel.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: Braking performance for daily use?
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Fine.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: Even on track, it was fine.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, most parts not a heavy brake track anyway.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: Oh, on paper, this car is slightly slower than a GT4.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: Is that a concern?
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: No.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: Its natural competitor is the Cayman GTS, I think, in terms of price point and in terms of uh specification.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: And uh no, I mean no, you know, I mean, there's always gonna be somebody faster than you, better looking and richer.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Guaranteed.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: But for the track, you know, the Viper is still a thrill for me.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: Speaking about track, you took this car on uh on a track day a little while ago.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: Um and uh so what what were your impressions of it?
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: I was very happy with it.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I was very happy with it.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: It was um a bit soft, yeah, which is which is to be expected compared to what um to what uh I usually drive.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: Um but uh but I was very happy with its uh performance.
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: Um I still need more seat time in it, but you know the main the the main thing with this car for me is that it's competent on the track, it's excellent on winding roads, it's just a pleasure to drive even at uh slow speeds because of the experience.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: So this car has uh cup twos, it's mid-engine.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: What's it like in the rain?
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: You have to respect the car in the rain.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: You know, you have to uh respect the fact that you're on uh on cup twos, so you slow down, you drive, you you drive at a speed that's appropriate for the condition.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, I've never had any problems driving it in in the rain.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: I don't, you know, in the city I don't drive uh uh aggressively, you know.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: So yeah, okay.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: When it comes to actually owning the car on an ongoing basis, so one concern I've heard that some folks have thought about getting a lotus is the lack of the amount of places that um service lotuses, uh especially going forward.
- 36:47SPEAKER_03: So uh is that a concern of yours?
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: In the uh GTA there is uh Peninsula Motors, which is out out in in Oakville and Gentry Lane.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, once you're going into the smaller uh cities and stuff, you know, where there may be a Porsche dealer, there may not be a Lotus dealer.
- 37:12SPEAKER_03: And by the way, if you're enjoying this uh YouTube video and you'd like to see more honest owner reviews just like this one, please subscribe to my channel.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: I thought this car had 50 miles on it.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: 70 kilometers.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: 70 kilometers.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: 70 kilometers, yeah.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: It was technically a used car.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's right.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: And are you willing to share with us how much you paid?
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: 148.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: 148 Canadian, which is about what, 110, 115 US dollars.
- 37:36unknown: Yeah, okay.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: That's uh that's fair.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: So um currently you can buy a 2025 Amira with similar options for about 115,000 US dollars or again, about 145,000 Canadian.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: Um currently I see 2024s are selling on Bring It Trailer for about 90k.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: Um does that concern you the appreciation aspect?
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: No.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, the reason I asked specifically is because Porsche's seem to be holding their value um uh over the last few years, but just the last few years.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, again, I think it has to do with cachet and market demand.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: You know, I I I didn't uh I didn't buy this cart as an investment.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: I didn't buy any of my you know cars for their investment potential.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: So it's not really a consideration for me.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: That doesn't bother me particularly.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: And it was worth the money.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 38:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:40SPEAKER_03: Well, that's all that matters.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: You're the one that put up the money, so I think so.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: You know, I I mean, you know, the for me, a car is not uh a purchase of a car.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Uh doesn't depend on um you know options and things like that.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: To me, it has to do with well, how do you feel driving it?
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: What kind of experience is it?
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: You know, are you immersed in it?
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: Are you engaged?
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: And that to me is worth more than money.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: So, no, I I don't have any I don't have any complaints.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: So in terms of um insurance, was insurance about similar to what you paid for the Porsches?
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:28SPEAKER_03: And uh what about maintenance costs so far?
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: Oit changes and that kind of thing, similar to Porsches?
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: More or less.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: Lotuses have had a bit of a reputation from the past.
- 39:37SPEAKER_03: Um what does Lotus stand for?
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: Lots of trouble, usually serious.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: I think that uh that goes back many, many years.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: You know, and uh that kind of thing.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: But um but your ownership experience so far has been good.
- 39:52SPEAKER_03: You said you had one issue?
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: So when I picked up the car, uh uh there wasn't um a refrigerant in the air conditioning.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: So that was fixed.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: Uh the uh Toyota uh engine uh is um is uh uh uh a a known quantity and uh reliable.
- 40:17SPEAKER_03: So uh so I Yeah, I I think maybe that um acronym goes back to LOTUS PES, the old Renault engine.
- 40:24SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, way back when for sure.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 40:28unknown: Yeah.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: So and there have been any check engine lights or SOS codes or anything like that?
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Nothing.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: The only thing I got yesterday was a warning that the battery in my key fob was.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: Oh yes, that's right.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: And that was about it.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: So another comment I I've heard was about uh software updates, that these cars have needed a few software updates.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: Anything?
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: Have you heard anything about that?
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: That hasn't been um uh I haven't I haven't had any difficulties with the uh uh uh software.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: It's been back to the dealer for road changes and stuff, so I I imagine they updated by um as a matter of course, uh but but there's been nothing that has been problematic for me.
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so when you were looking at this car, you were looking forward a lotus and things like that, but there was nothing else that you were considering.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: I'll either get a lotus or uh Well, I was looking at um, you know, I watched something stick.
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: Oh, few and far between.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: You know, so it's kind of slim pickings.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I I was looking at a a Mustang Dark Horse.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, that's a front engine rear-wheel drive, but I have one of those, you know.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: I have a a Viper and and you know, I thought of, you know, the GR86 and other and other Miattas and things like this, but but you know, I thought that um, you know, the uh aesthetic appeal of the car and its uh and its uh heritage and stuff like that appealed to me.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: And so it became it was a very easy easy choice.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: It was, you know, it's fast enough to get out of its own way.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: You know, it can uh it can um you know it won't embarrass itself on the track, so you know, uh so there's nothing really else that that uh that I looked at.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: You know, the uh Camaro Z01 uh 1LE has always appealed to me as a as a driver's car.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: But I have a Viper, you know, so you know, um so you know, right now I'm fortunate I have a rear engine car, I have a mid-engine car, and I have a front engine car.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: And so uh I like have I like having the variety.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: No, no, I can certainly understand that.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: So under what circumstances is a uh V6 uh mirror like this one better than a portion GTS, for example, I don't think it necessarily is.
- 43:41unknown: Okay.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: It all depends it it all depends on what you're looking for.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: To me, um the GT four in day to day driving was kind of anodine.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: You know, it was uh This is very to me is very um you know very uh involving you know what do you want to do you know uh you know the uh and and so um and so this car has a soul to it you know yes I didn't get that feeling from the uh the uh uh GT4 so when I when a friend of mine bought it um um I was happy it was going to uh a good home yeah but I didn't miss it.
- 44:34SPEAKER_03: So what would you say would be your three best three things you like the most about your this car?
- 44:39SPEAKER_03: Its soul its steering and its looks and then conversely what are the three things you like the least about this car?
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: I think that the lack of gauges is is a real oversight.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Oh right got it gear shift is kind of close I would have I would have preferred it to be another few inches away and otherwise um you know uh uh and I would have preferred a more user-friendly way to check the oil yeah that doesn't involve second degree burns to that's right so you had certain expectations when you bought this car what exceeded your expectations the driving experience I did I oh yeah yeah did you think a lot of it was just kind of hype because they everybody talks about the driving experience no but but you no just no it's great no i i tell people it drives as good as it looks no I'm very satisfied with the uh with the uh uh the driving experience so what would you warn uh potential buyers uh if they're considering this car what would you warn them about dealer network yeah um it's not um and depending on what kind of driver it was you know they were the touch screen and the fact that it's um it's a uh it's an enthusiast's car and the ride is non-plush it's supple you know the there's a difference you know I feel that I feel that the um car is buttoned down and it's not crashy it's just controlled and measured in its in its movements and I really like that nice what would be what would you say was the biggest misconception you had about this car that it has now proven you wrong about uh well the reliability yeah and there have been people who have talked about um the uh quality of the paint in terms of orange peel and stuff yeah I haven't I didn't notice that either I didn't notice that um uh and that's about it I mean that and that's fair you know I had a certain expectation of the uh of the car and the car has actually exceeded that so what's next for you with this car you plan to keep it forever well forever you know if depending on who you depending on who you talk to forever is like three or four years when it comes to cars when it comes to cars but you know I've had um I've had the Viper for nine years it's uh it's a 2017 one of the last ECR extremes to be built and uh I love the 911 turbo I love this so I would miss this car if I didn't have it and are you planning any modifications to the car exhaust system I often hear people talk about stuff like that no no um no I I'll tell you while the car while the car is under warranty still uh I'm certainly not going to do anything to it right um if something happens to it once it's out of warranty then then we'll see but I'm not planning any modifications on this car.
- 48:31SPEAKER_03: So who would you recommend to buy this car?
- 48:34SPEAKER_03: Or a car like this?
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: A serious enthusiast.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: A serious enthusiast yeah yeah as opposed to well I think I'll get a Porsche because somebody else has one or they look cool or it'll make a statement.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: But those are the type of people that definitely shouldn't be buying it right the people that just want a cool car.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: Well if they're not into the driving experience um I think that they might find it too loud, too harsh and too direct.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: So I think that that is that is the um so I think so I think that that's the the difference.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: I think that you would have to be a car enthusiast to some degree to to have this.
- 49:23SPEAKER_02: If someone's seriously considering it a a uh an uh a mirror your advice would be how much do you like driving surprisingly often Porsche owners are also Lotus owners so Abe's comments about his ownership experience are very pertinent.
- 49:38SPEAKER_02: Click here to check out my honest owner review of my Porsche spider and I'll see you there.
