- 0:00Hey, everybody, it's Jeff. Wanted to let you know that this podcast

- 0:09you enjoy the show. All right, everybody, you're listening to Table Talk
- 0:34here at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports
- 0:37podcast show in the world, that's right over ten and a half years strong.
- 0:41We got our great show coming your way this week here on Table Talk.
- 0:44This NFL season has been very interesting. There are a lot of great
- 0:47storylines that we've been following here at the PST podcast show. We wanted to
- 0:51get into them during this particular discussion this week, as where we are almost
- 0:56wrapping up October. We are almost at the halfway point of the ENDFL season,
- 1:00so let's get into some of these storylines that are very interesting. We
- 1:03got a great guest, let's get to it, and it is great to
- 1:06have back on the podcast. Love talking to him about the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers,
- 1:11and they're doing some great stuff Over at steel Curtainnetwork dot Com. We've
- 1:15got the one and only Dave Scofield. How you doing, buddy, Oh,
- 1:19I'm doing all right. We're getting things rolling here. As part of
- 1:22Fans First Sports Network, we had a little change up with our podcasts and
- 1:26our so we rolled our website over to there, and yeah, we're turning
- 1:30it out talking Pittsburgh Steelers as much as we can. Absolutely. All right,
- 1:34folks, if you're not following Dave on Twitter at st l R super
- 1:38fan Dad, that was a great, great, great, great Twitter handle
- 1:42again, as it's Twitter handle ever, it is it is, but it's
- 1:45great at stl R a super fan Dad. All right, Well, we
- 1:49got to get into this NFL season what we've been seeing on the field so
- 1:53far, Dave, because it's really been an interesting season thus far. And
- 1:57I feel like there's like a couple top tier teams for sure in this league,
- 2:00but I'm not sure if we're seeing a total domination or a totally dominant
- 2:07type of team in the league this season where we can say with certainty,
- 2:10yes, this team is definitely going to the super Bowl, you know,
- 2:14unless they have some sort of injury. I just don't think there's necessarily a
- 2:17team out there like that. How would you describe this NFL season thus far?
- 2:23After seven weeks from everything we've seen, Well, if you would have
- 2:25asked me two weeks ago, I don't think I'd giving you the same answer.
- 2:30Okay, because it just goes to show. In the NFL, it
- 2:32is such a week to week league, and one thing I will say for
- 2:37sure, be wary of the hot start, because it's not how you start,
- 2:42it's how you finish. Yes, Pittsburgh Steelers know this as much as
- 2:46anything. From the twenty twenty season, they rolled off eleven straight wins.
- 2:50If you would have told me how did you feel about the Steelers after Week
- 2:53seven, after six games, I'd have been great. But after twelve games,
- 2:57yeah, they're not going in the right direction. That hot start.
- 3:00So sometimes last year with the Philadelphia Eagles, I think they were a team
- 3:06that kind of they did it the whole season, with a little exception of
- 3:10when Jalen Hurts was out was the only time they really had any kind of
- 3:15stumble. They were that team last year. This year, I don't know
- 3:20that there is. You thought maybe the forty nine ers, but then when
- 3:23when Christian McCaffrey went out for the second half of that game, they kind
- 3:27of fell apart. The Eagles against the Jets. You're like, I don't
- 3:31know. It just kind of shows that anyone can lose to anyone on any
- 3:35given Sunday. Absolutely, and I don't even think the Chiefs. I don't
- 3:38even think the Kansas City Chiefs are necessarily that dominant team to get back to
- 3:43the super Bowl at this point. Yes, I know that Patrick Mahomes Jason
- 3:46Kelsey had quite the day this past week and Week six together, but that
- 3:52that Patrick Mahomes that we have seen in the past hasn't necessarily been the Patrick
- 3:55Holmes Mahomes that we have seen here in twenty twenty three. Dave, Yeah,
- 4:00You're exactly right, And yes, they did have a really impressive game
- 4:05on Sunday Night Football against the Chargers. They put up thirty one points against
- 4:11the Chargers. They have to remember that the Chargers are a team that they
- 4:15just they're going to get into some high scoring affairs there. So I'm Kansas
- 4:20City is that team that I'm like, they're not really have it together yet.
- 4:25Yeah, but it's not about having it together yet. It's about winning
- 4:29as much as you can along the way and getting it together later. And
- 4:32therefore, the Chiefs are a team that I think they are going to get
- 4:36there even coming. I would even put the Eagles kind of in that same
- 4:42category. They won a bunch of games early, but they didn't really seem
- 4:46to completely have it together, but they were winning along the way. They're
- 4:48another team that's going to be there. Other than maybe the forty nine ers,
- 4:54those are probably the three teams that I would put towards the top right
- 4:58now. Ask me again six weeks. It might be, it might be
- 5:00completely different. Absolutely. Well. The next topic I wanted to get into
- 5:04with you, Dave. You know, it's something I've been thinking about for
- 5:08a while here. It's when quarterbacks are basically any position, uh and any
- 5:13player in the NFL really gets a big contract and a huge contract for their
- 5:16future. And there's two individuals that I've really been thinking about in terms of
- 5:20the quarterback position, and that's Deshaun Watson and Daniel Jones, two guys who
- 5:26ended up getting really great deals based on their play, you know, the
- 5:30previous year that they ended up signing that deal that they received. I just
- 5:38find it amazing that both the Browns and the Giants just made these significant investments
- 5:42in these quarterbacks for the future, and both of these quarterbacks have really just
- 5:46kind of stunken up here this season. So it amazes me the amount of
- 5:51money that is doled out to certain players, certain positions without really a solid
- 5:59concrete yes, we're making the right decision for the future by an organization.
- 6:03So I'm wondering which which team do you think has potentially made the bigger mistake
- 6:09with their quarterback investment here with the with regard to Deshaun Watson and Daniel Jones
- 6:13and why what do you think? Well, I have to say, first
- 6:15of all, I love the Deshaun Watson contract as another team in the AFC
- 6:20North. Yes, because when you do something like that and handcuff your team
- 6:25and and and so ma people are like, why do the why do the
- 6:27Browns have so much cap space right now? They're they're setting everything up to
- 6:30make a great move this year. No, it's because they're so far in
- 6:33the whole next year they really need to have a lot of carryover. Uh.
- 6:36The Watson one, that one that was a head scratcher to me,
- 6:41not just because of the allegations, but also because you know, you sit
- 6:44out for a year, new's going to be suspended for a while. Is
- 6:48he ever really going to get back to where he was. I was watching
- 6:53that game yesterday because the Steelers did not play until until later on or that
- 6:57game on Sunday, and I have to if they after the whole coming out
- 7:01of the concussion protocol thing, I think if they put him back in there,
- 7:04they don't win that game. Yeah, I still think he has issues
- 7:08with the shoulder. I don't know that they wanted to say that was and
- 7:11it's just something there isn't quite right. And believe it or not, the
- 7:15Browns are actually rallying more behind PJ. Walker than they are Deshaun Watson at
- 7:20this time. So you have to ask yourself, that much money and you're
- 7:26not getting that much improved play You've got to get You've got to have upgrade
- 7:30with the investment. If you're investing that much, you know your cost of
- 7:35replacement. Just how much it drops down is just crazy. As well as
- 7:40the first round picks as well as the first round picks too that they had
- 7:44to give up to get him. Yeah, I mean they really mortgaged just
- 7:48about everything they could in order to do that. And then if he's not
- 7:53I mean, he might not be the best guy on their team right now,
- 7:56right exactly at the quarterback position. So that that's really I mean,
- 8:01which is sad because the guy that they've had the last two games has actually
- 8:05been a practice squad elevation. Are you keeping your best quarterback on the practice
- 8:07squad man? But the Giants, that was a really that was another head
- 8:13scratcher there. I'm not as as in tune to the NFC as I am
- 8:16the AFC, but I just didn't get that one. It sounds it felt
- 8:22an awful lot like Matthew Stafford when he was in Detroit. It was one
- 8:26of those things of we're not that great, but or even worse without him,
- 8:31so we better pay him. Yeah, but that's a good assessment.
- 8:35Are you really getting what you're paying for? Right? And I don't think
- 8:39they are. Yeah, I think that's a very good assessment there, Dave,
- 8:43for sure. But I really want to I want to talk about the
- 8:46AFC North a little bit more with you. You're very much in tune to
- 8:50what is happening within this particular division, and it isn't what I thought it
- 8:54was going to look like through seven weeks. Quite frankly, it's one of
- 8:58the more most competitive divisions I think in football here at this point. I
- 9:03mean, it's so bizarre. The Bengals are three and three at the bottom
- 9:07of the division, which I think has surprised some at this point. The
- 9:09Ravens are at the top, which honestly, it was surprising for me as
- 9:13we were going through our season predictions here. And what hasn't surprised me is
- 9:18how the Steelers are actually playing some solid football. It's not perfect by any
- 9:22stretch of the imagination, but I remember saying on this podcast well before the
- 9:26season started that the Pittsburgh Steelers were going to be a pretty good football team
- 9:30and that there were some folks who were underestimating what they were going to be
- 9:33able to do on the field. So I'm wondering what has been most surprising
- 9:37for you within the AFC North thus far after seven weeks. I would have
- 9:41to say that the Bengals just started off as a mess. They really did.
- 9:46I thought that was surprising for those of us that are involved with the
- 9:50AFC North. We believed that it's the best division in football for the last
- 9:54couple of years. This is kind of what is expected by But you look
- 10:00at all the teams right now, you know three and three, everyone's five
- 10:03hundred or better. But yet ten wins could win this division because they got
- 10:07to play everybody. Last year, all four teams went three and three in
- 10:13the division and split with each other, all four teams. It just goes
- 10:16to show you that it's Some people are like, oh, could you get
- 10:22two or even three wild cards out of the North. I'm like, they
- 10:24all got to play each other. Y'all gott to play each other, so
- 10:28they're going to beat each other up a little bit, not just in wins
- 10:30and losses, but in the physicality of those games. So the AFC North,
- 10:35it never seems like it follows suit and there hasn't been a team win
- 10:41the AFC North three seasons in a row since it was created in two thousand
- 10:46and two. So I'm not surprised to see the Bengals not in first place.
- 10:50But at the same time, they struggled, but they're bouncing back and
- 10:54they called back to five hundred. Wish the Steelers could have got them early
- 10:58before they start to figure some stuff out. But then again, the Steelers
- 11:01have a lot of stuff they don't have figured out either. But it's a
- 11:05competitive division, it really is. Where do you think the Steelers have really
- 11:09been growing in terms of this division, in terms of just their season and
- 11:11tieer in twenty twenty three. Where do you think the Steelers have really grown
- 11:16and where do you think is really going to be a strength for them.
- 11:18Well, I'll tell you, I don't know if this has grown, but
- 11:24the Steelers are taking advantage of this. They are all in on splash plays.
- 11:28Yeah, offensively. Defensively, I mean before Week seven against the Rams
- 11:33they didn't have a rushing touchdown. Then they had three against the Rams.
- 11:35They're not putting a lot of points on the board offensively, but when they
- 11:39were last year. The Steelers' longest touchdown I think was thirty four yards for
- 11:46the whole season. This year, even going into the Bay, even even
- 11:50with fewer games, they already had three touchdowns of forty yards or more.
- 11:54The two longest touchdown passes this year for the NFL, we're both from Keniket
- 12:00seventy two yards. So they were doing splash on offense, but they couldn't
- 12:03sustain drives. They did much better of that coming out of the buy,
- 12:07So I really hope that's somewhere they will grow. But then defense, both
- 12:11both these teams they're ranked really far down. Going into Week seven, they
- 12:16were the thirtieth ranked offense and the thirtieth ranked defense, and yet they were
- 12:18three and two and managed to win another game to go to four and two.
- 12:24But they're they're up there in sacks and in takeaways. Every time the
- 12:28Steelers win the turnover battle, they win the game. They're four and zero
- 12:31when they're on the plus, they're zero and to two when they're in the
- 12:33minus. They basically they're making their living off of splash early, which is
- 12:39all right, but what happens when you don't get those plays. That's when
- 12:41you get a sinker against the Houston Texans, things like that. So when
- 12:46you're dependent on it, it's kind of a dangerous recipe. But if you
- 12:50can win with it while you work on improving other things. Because last year
- 12:54they didn't have that. They got in a big hole early and then just
- 13:00came up just short trying to scrape into the playoffs. Yeah, somebody who
- 13:03is on the outside, it's been interesting to see where the Pittsburgh Steelers are
- 13:05gonna be going this season, for sure. And I wanted to talk about
- 13:09another team who we touched on earlier as well, but you know, I've
- 13:13just been just been thinking about the Kansas City Chiefs more and more, and
- 13:16as much as I hate to say it, like I because I'm so tired
- 13:20of this team. I'm so tired of the various narratives around this team.
- 13:22I mean, it does seem like the Chiefs are once again probably gonna remain
- 13:26somewhere in the top of the AFC. Not necessarily number one, but I
- 13:31would definitely say probably in the top three. They're not the Chiefs of the
- 13:37past couple seasons, as we mentioned earlier, and I think there are some
- 13:39vulnerabilities with this particular team. The Philadelphia Eagles end up playing them, they
- 13:45have a pretty tough schedule, and yes, the Eagles have a tough schedule
- 13:48as well. But I'm wondering, like, if you can get into a
- 13:50little bit more detail about your assessments of the Chiefs, and do you think
- 13:54it's gonna be easy for them perhaps to you know, quote run the table,
- 13:58to get back to once again some postseason dominance. What are you thinking,
- 14:01Well, it's funny that you say that about the Chiefs, because that's
- 14:05how I felt in many around the NFL did five years ago about the Patriots.
- 14:09And now we see where they did pull up a really nice win there
- 14:15on Sunday. They did so, which goes to kind of show why I
- 14:18think the Chiefs are still the cream of the crop of the AFC. You
- 14:22have these other teams that you think could maybe knock them off, like the
- 14:24Bills or the Dolphins or I mean even the Chargers, but they can't keep
- 14:31everything together defensively, and like I said, with THEFC North, they're all
- 14:37beating each other up. So it's really hard for one of those to really
- 14:39emerge and be like, oh, they're going to come out of this as
- 14:41the number one seed. It's hard to come out. It's hard to be
- 14:43the number one seed when your entire division is really good. Yeah. So
- 14:50we saw that with do England for years they had a terrible AFC East and
- 14:54they kept getting the top seeds because they didn't have to play anyone for half
- 14:58their game, right division games. So with the Chiefs, it's one of
- 15:03those things that they do it enough to get by early. With anybody,
- 15:07it's what do you do come December? Can you do you have it together
- 15:11come December? And so much can change between now and then. The Chiefs
- 15:16offense right now really seems dependent on Mahomes and Kelsey. Outside of that,
- 15:22they have a lot of question marks. Now, they did put up a
- 15:24bunch of points against the Chargers. As I said before, it with the
- 15:26Chargers, but outside of the those two that I think that would be a
- 15:33team that would be devastated by an injury there almost more than anybody else.
- 15:39Well, I think we saw that with Travis Kelcey early with his injury that
- 15:41he had. He wasn't necessarily the Travis Kelsey even yeah, coming back in
- 15:46week two, he wasn't necessarily the Travis Kelcey that we have seen in the
- 15:48past. Yeah. I will tell you one thing that has surprised me with
- 15:52the Chiefs is I think it's their defense that's actually helping them out even more.
- 15:58Absolutely, Yeah so far, yep. So if you if you talk
- 16:00about, well, all the Chiefs offense isn't what it once was, But
- 16:03then if you're actually talking about their defense, that's that's something that's going to
- 16:08They're they're going to be up there. I don't know if they'll get the
- 16:11number one seed. There's a lot that can happen. Health is a huge
- 16:15factor with everything, but they are a team that they're they're Still, even
- 16:21if they don't even win their division, which would really surprise me, and
- 16:25they're a wild card team, there's still a team that you would look at
- 16:30in the AFC that you don't want to play them in the playoffs. Absolutely,
- 16:33you know you you want to play them, You want them in the
- 16:34conference championship game. You don't want to have to worry about them until you
- 16:37get that far. So they are still the team to beat in the division.
- 16:42It's just how it is, all right in the conference. Yeah,
- 16:45in the conference? Absolutely, Yes, again, folks. Dave Schofield from
- 16:48Steel Curtain Network dot com. Check out everything they're doing over there. And
- 16:52as we're moving along here, Dave have a two part question for you,
- 16:56talking about overrated teams underrated teams. Who do you think, at this point
- 17:00in the season is maybe the most overrated team in the NFL? What are
- 17:06your thoughts? Well, if you would have asked me two weeks ago,
- 17:10I probably would have said, shockingly, the Chiefs and the Eagles coming off
- 17:15with the Super Bowl, because you expect them to be one of those top
- 17:18teams, and they looked like they had had weak spots, that they had
- 17:22places things you could exploit. Absolutely, I don't feel that way now.
- 17:26They're both finding their way, as many NFL teams are right now. After
- 17:33what happened in Baltimore this weekend, the hype train on the Detroit Lions really
- 17:40needs to be slowed down. Yeah, because they got it handed to them
- 17:44they I mean, my goodness, it was twenty eight to nothing halfway through
- 17:48the second quarter. They didn't have the didn't have a first down yet.
- 17:52Yeah, they didn't even have an offensive first down and they were down twenty
- 17:56eight to nothing. So now, sometimes, can you take a game like
- 17:59that and and say you just kind of get everything bad out of your system
- 18:03and turn around and build off of it. Absolutely, We'll see if the
- 18:07Detroit Lions are built that way. So they were a team some were talking
- 18:11about, could they push for that number one spot in the NFC. I'm
- 18:15gonna say right now, I'm not after Week seven, but other overrated teams,
- 18:22teams that are getting a lot of hype, I think the forty nine
- 18:26ers hype is deserved. I think they have a fantastic team, I think,
- 18:32and they had it figured out right away. They just have to stay
- 18:33healthy. I think that now the Eagles and the Chiefs have moved into that.
- 18:38Hey, we're getting used to each other and everything. We're rolling through
- 18:42this season. So if I would say, so many people they don't know
- 18:48what to think about the Baltimore Ravens. I mean, the Steelers have just
- 18:52had Lamar Jackson's number, and they hung around long enough in that game to
- 18:56pull off a win over them. But then they turn around and do what
- 19:00they've done the last couple of weeks. I would love to call them overrated,
- 19:03but unfortunately I don't know that I can, so I'm going there.
- 19:11I would say Dallas Cowboys answer Yeah. I would say they're probably because they're
- 19:18they're always hyped up a little bit, and believe it or not, you
- 19:22could even say there were people that were really hyped on the Steelers and people
- 19:29that weren't believers in the Steelers. If you were really hyped on the Steelers,
- 19:33then then that's p I would put them in the overrated. I mean,
- 19:37they had that phenomenal first team offense preseason, five for five with touchdowns.
- 19:42I'm like, but teams aren't scheming against Kenny Pickett, They're not loading
- 19:48the box when the team is tipping off that they're obviously running the ball those
- 19:52are the things that the Steelers are now trying to overcome with a little better
- 19:56this week. So I wouldn't put them. I really that various fan bases
- 20:02and various you know, even within their division have a different view of teams
- 20:07than than the global NFL. That's true. So some people were so hyped
- 20:11on the Cowboys and I'm like, yeah, I don't know about that,
- 20:14So I don't know if you would call them overrated for that, But yeah,
- 20:18some people are like, no, they're not. They in the first
- 20:21place this podcast, that's the team that stands out to me the most,
- 20:26and it's easy to pick on them, Yes, you know, if they
- 20:30had to buy so you can't. Can't criticize everything that they just did.
- 20:33So I'll go with that one. There's some great answers there for sure.
- 20:37Absolutely. David, all right, well, what about the one of the
- 20:40what do you think about the most underrated team thus far at this point in
- 20:42the league after seven weeks of play? Who do you think that that most
- 20:47underrated team is that we've seen on the field. Man, I'm gonna sound
- 20:52like a total Steelers homer by saying this, and it's not the Steelers.
- 20:57I'm gonna say they Houston Texansky because you know what they did when they beat
- 21:03Jacksonville, they beat Pittsburgh, then they lost to a team that I'm actually
- 21:07going to throw them out there, believe it or not. I can't figure
- 21:11out how the Atlanta Falcons based on the players that they have, the quarterback
- 21:14that they had, but I don't think is any good or manage it to
- 21:17stick around and win games. I think I think they're a little bit underrated
- 21:23some people. Yeah, some people might have really started to buy into the
- 21:27Saints after they did what they did in New England. That then I would
- 21:32have put them more in the overrated category because I don't think there is so
- 21:36there was a huge middle portion of the NFL that I mean, it's you
- 21:41call it the middle, but it's like eighty percent of the league. For
- 21:45more that they're all there and you don't know what version of that team you're
- 21:49going to get from week to week. So they could they could beat anybody
- 21:52yet lose to anybody. So I was surprised that the Texans were figuring stuff
- 21:57out the way that they were early. The Jets defense is for real.
- 22:03That's why so many people were hyped up on them with the whole Aaron rodgersting,
- 22:07but then with him being out they got kind of written off. That
- 22:11defense could could manage to have them stick around. I mean, Eagles fans
- 22:15should know plenty about that. Oh. Yes, So there are some of
- 22:19those teams that you just think they're gonna they're they're just going to be walked
- 22:23all over the whole season, and they're not. I mean, my goodness,
- 22:26even the Chicago Bears are starting to figure out a few things. Yeah,
- 22:30anyone can really beat anybody in this league right now in the middle of
- 22:34the season. Absolutely, all right. Well, to close us out here,
- 22:37Dave wanted to ask you through seven weeks. You know, I think
- 22:41it's I think it's pretty fair to say the officiating hasn't been perfect. It
- 22:45never is, right, it's never We always complain about it, fans,
- 22:48NFL fans always complaining about it. But I mean, I'm wondering, you
- 22:52know, if there was one rule change that the NFL really needs to take
- 22:56a look at in the future to help the game out. What do you
- 22:59think that one rule change would be like from your perspective, Well, there's
- 23:03there's a lot that you can go here, I can go into this one
- 23:04forever. I mean, my good and you're right, it's bad. I
- 23:07mean sorry, Eagles tend to nothing in penalties. I know that with that
- 23:11open field phase mask that was just absolutely I'll be honest with you. I
- 23:17also here, I'll give you one rule, but this isn't gonna be my
- 23:18main answer. I think ahead NFL official should not be allowed to officiate a
- 23:29game in the whole market of where they live with the Eagles on Sunday night.
- 23:36Yes, my wife actually works with one of the head officials in the
- 23:40NFL, so I know what market is is and it's not the Steelers,
- 23:42believe or not, okay, And I get so frustrated when I see him
- 23:45officiating those games because I don't not even just from a standpoint of where are
- 23:52they going to be biased towards that that team. They still got to go
- 23:56home and live in an area of fans that team. If there's something that
- 24:00didn't go that way, I just don't think that that's They should just avoid
- 24:04that one altogether. But if I was going to change a rule, the
- 24:08NFL already has the chips in every ball. They do it for the next
- 24:14gen stats. They get the rotation speed and all that other stuff. Why
- 24:18are we hauling out these these chain linked markers out there onto the field for
- 24:23the drama of I mean even in the Steelers game when they got a very
- 24:27generous spot and that one and then then you bring out the chains. There's
- 24:30a chip in the ball. Why are we not using that for first downs,
- 24:34for touchdowns, for out of it, for all these different things.
- 24:37You can you can even time it up to say, oh, this time,
- 24:41you can see that the player's foot hit out of bounds. Where was
- 24:45the ball? Right? You have technology. I think that's something they really
- 24:48should implement. They've already, like I said, they already got the chip.
- 24:52The chip's already in the ball. You got to do is use it.
- 24:55So I would like to see a little bit more technology in that aspect,
- 25:00not in a way that's going to slow down the game. I mean,
- 25:03so to me, that's that could even be more officials. They don't
- 25:07even have to be in New York. They can even be in stadium but
- 25:10in the booth to break down this technology and get it out there to the
- 25:15officials on the field in almost instantly in order to make the best call possible.
- 25:22When it comes to those kind of things. I absolutely love the answer.
- 25:25You know technologies here for a reason. Let's implement it and use it
- 25:30in today's sports for sure. Again, folks, Dave Schofield from Steel Curtain
