- 0:00unknown: Five.
- 0:40SPEAKER_09: Hello and welcome to the Overclock Dreamix podcast.
- 0:43SPEAKER_09: My name is Zack, and Kirby's Dreamland is the first video game I ever beat on my own without help.
- 0:48SPEAKER_09: This is episode number 12, and 12 is also a playable character in Street Fighter 3 Third Strike.
- 0:55SPEAKER_09: Until pretty recently, Street Fighter 3 was a big gap in my Street Fighter playtime.
- 1:00SPEAKER_09: I've never been the biggest Street Fighter fan to begin with.
- 1:04SPEAKER_09: I mean, everyone played 2 though, right?
- 1:07SPEAKER_09: And then 3 came out, and everyone was still playing 2.
- 1:11SPEAKER_09: I dabbled in 4 when it came out, and 5, and now 6.
- 1:15SPEAKER_09: But 3 was always just a mystery to me.
- 1:19SPEAKER_09: Until a friend of mine who plays competitively offered to show me the ropes.
- 1:24SPEAKER_09: And I'm still garbage at the game, but I had fun playing around with it some.
- 1:28SPEAKER_09: It's right in that beautiful era of Capcom when they were pushing 2D art to its limits.
- 1:34SPEAKER_09: Gigantic sprites with a million frames of animation, yes please.
- 1:39SPEAKER_09: The intro music this month was Breakbeat Forest by Tepid from Kirby's Dreamland 2.
- 1:45SPEAKER_09: Let's talk some news.
- 2:25SPEAKER_09: As a reminder, the theme this time is Mega Man vs.
- 2:28SPEAKER_09: Mega Man inspired games.
- 2:30SPEAKER_09: So if you want to hear, say, Mega Man 4 mashed up with, say, Gravity Circuit, then you should really go give that a listen.
- 2:39SPEAKER_09: You can find voting as well as all the tracks released so far on the OC Remix Forums in the competitions section.
- 2:46SPEAKER_09: The other big news item is that the Overclocked Remix merch store is back open.
- 2:51SPEAKER_09: My old OCR t-shirt gave up the ghost of a long, long time ago.
- 2:57SPEAKER_09: It has become a square on one of my coziest winter quilts.
- 3:01SPEAKER_09: Incidentally, did you know that there are places where you can send in your old t-shirts and they'll turn them into quilts?
- 3:07SPEAKER_09: Well, if you want a t-shirt that will eventually be turned into a quilt, or for that matter, a hoodie, or a coffee mug, you can get one with the OCR logo.
- 3:16SPEAKER_09: Go to the main page, then click support up at the top and buy merchandise.
- 3:22SPEAKER_09: The news music this month was Bias Groove by Insert Ruby from Kirby's Dreamland.
- 3:29SPEAKER_09: And that track is old, old OCR lore.
- 3:33SPEAKER_09: Back in the day, there were these people on forums and IRC, that's sort of like old people discord, complaining that our OCR judges had a quote-unquote groove bias, and only sufficiently groovy tracks got chosen.
- 3:49SPEAKER_09: That's demonstrably hogwash, of course, but it did turn into a meme.
- 3:55SPEAKER_09: But enough about the old days, let's move on to some new releases.
- 3:59SPEAKER_09: And boy did we have a lot.
- 4:01SPEAKER_09: Over three hours worth of 38 tracks.
- 4:05SPEAKER_09: Up until this point, I've been trying to say a little bit about each and every track, and I just don't have that kind of time for this many tracks.
- 4:14SPEAKER_09: I'd rather change up the format a little than have no podcast at all.
- 4:18SPEAKER_09: So here's what we're gonna do.
- 4:20SPEAKER_09: We're gonna do this radio style.
- 4:23SPEAKER_09: I'm gonna play a block of tracks, credit all of them, maybe say a little bit of something that springs to mind, and then we're gonna move on to the next.
- 4:31SPEAKER_09: But even with that caveat, strap in.
- 28:38SPEAKER_09: Alright, first up we had Slow Dancing at the End of the World by Emulator, JN Wake, Zack Parrish, Chimpzilla, and Flex Style from Guitaru Man.
- 28:48SPEAKER_09: After that was Adventures Ahead by Gaspod from A Short Hike.
- 28:53SPEAKER_09: Following that, we had Nirvana by Rebecca E.
- 28:57SPEAKER_09: Tripp, Gamer of the Winds, Medlix, and Stephen Higby from The Legend of Zelda, Tears of the Kingdom.
- 29:04SPEAKER_09: And finally, Never Forget Her Name by JN Wake, Jabbo, Minus World, Ronan Opf, and T.
- 29:11SPEAKER_09: Sori from Fire Emblem Awakening.
- 29:14SPEAKER_09: Off to a heck of a start with this block.
- 29:16SPEAKER_09: Gitaru Man was one of my favorite PS2 games.
- 29:20SPEAKER_09: It's a pretty silly little rhythm action game, but it had a great soundtrack.
- 29:25SPEAKER_09: Oh, and man, that Fire Emblem remix.
- 29:28SPEAKER_09: I'm on the record of not being particularly impressed with Fire Emblem music as a general rule, but when it's presented like this, who can resist?
- 29:37SPEAKER_09: Reminds me of one of my favorite progrock acts.
- 29:40SPEAKER_09: Thank you, Scientist.
- 29:42SPEAKER_09: Alright, let's get back to the music, starting with Gunslinger by Joshua Morse from La Tale.
- 29:49SPEAKER_09: La Tale?
- 29:50SPEAKER_09: Something like that.
- 42:16SPEAKER_09: After that was Million Dollar Death Trap by Seth Skoda from Sonic and Knuckles, a game that I played a lot of.
- 42:24SPEAKER_09: Following that, we had Into Darkness by Mark Van Meckelen from Star Fox 64, another game I played quite a bit of.
- 42:34SPEAKER_09: And Rounding Us Out, Memories of Mabe, or Maybe, as I used to pronounce it, by Argyle from The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening.
- 42:45SPEAKER_09: Joshua Morse just has this sound to his music.
- 42:49SPEAKER_09: I always want to describe it as elevator music, but I mean it in a good way.
- 42:54SPEAKER_09: It's elevator music you want to dance to.
- 42:57SPEAKER_09: Uh, like the Goombas in the Super Mario Brothers movie.
- 43:01SPEAKER_09: The 90s one.
- 43:02SPEAKER_09: And I have to acknowledge, Argyll has been on fire lately.
- 43:06SPEAKER_09: After a lengthy hiatus from OCR, he is showing up month after month and just bringing us such sweet and beautiful tracks.
- 43:16SPEAKER_09: Now you may notice we're missing a track here.
- 43:19SPEAKER_09: I've omitted a Hollow Knight track because we listened to it last month in our full listen of the album Night for a Night.
- 43:27SPEAKER_09: Go check it out! And now, back to the tunes, starting with one of the most remixed games on the site, Chrono Trigger.
- 50:03SPEAKER_03: No, they're not.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_09: First up from Chrono Trigger, that was Menoria Cathedral Corruption by Well, it's written H thirty-six T, but I think it might be pronounced Heat.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_09: After that we had I'm Gonna Douse, Douse, by Unknown Pseudo Artist, Jay and Wake, Minus World, and Pixels and Paradiddles from Tales of Fantasia.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_09: After that was Dark Revelations by Gaspod from Tunic, which I really ought to play.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_09: Finally, we had Blood on the Riviera by Zyco from Bomberman 93.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_09: D-H-A-O-S.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_09: That's the villain of Tales of Fantasia, and I always pronounced it Deos, like it rhymes with Chaos, but I'm guessing that's not the only pronunciation, because well, clearly there's a pun going on in that title.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_09: Great track, though.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_09: I always love when someone just lets Jay and Wake loose near a synthesizer and just lets him go nuts.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_09: Now we're gonna move on to some more music, starting with our second a short hike remix of the month.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_00: Just another day on the job.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_00: Billy just gets tracked.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_00: Left alone at the age of no in a sense of left attack.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_05: See the big guts and his wraps.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_05: Take a deep breath, then open your eyes.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_00: Every time you're passed to clear the can be done, you're not going to be able to do it.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_09: After that was Forest in the Night by Minus World, Zero the Wolf, Roland and Lara Cuente Martinez, Unfocused in Iowa, and Xander Pete from Xenoblade Chronicles X.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_09: After that was The Road Home by Lucas Guimares, The Man PF and T.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_09: Sori from Xenoblade Chronicles without the X.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_09: And finally, War Never Changes by Cyril the Wolf and Zach Harris from Mega Man Z X.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_09: Variations on X this time.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_09: Also, that might be Mega Man ZX for you.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_09: Commonwealth English.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_09: So two mixes this month from a game called A Short High, which I had neither heard of nor played.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_09: Sounds like I should at least check out the soundtrack.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_09: It's some sort of Animal Crossing adjacent, except in addition to all of the activities, it actually has a completable story.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_09: I guess if that sounds like your jam, go check it out.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_09: And a big OCR podcast.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_09: Welcome to Newcomber Slowly Crash.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_09: But man, oh man! A prog metal remix of my very favorite track from Xenoblade Chronicles X.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_09: One by one indeed.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_09: I still have mixed feelings about the game itself, but I adore the soundtrack by anime composer Hiroyuki Sawano.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_09: This one got fourth place in the Dwelling of Duels Forest versus Jungle Month.
- 1:38:50SPEAKER_09: Following that, we had Prepared Fry by Argul from Dark Souls, and then finally Don Chorus by Will Rock, Christine Gigan, and Dennis Muto from Donkey Kong Country 2.
- 1:39:03SPEAKER_09: I know we're doing a Kirby thing this month.
- 1:39:06SPEAKER_09: Spoilers if you haven't already caught on.
- 1:39:08SPEAKER_09: But let's not forget, we also got a new Katamari game recently.
- 1:39:12SPEAKER_09: The first new one since the beloved but short-lived PlayStation Vita.
- 1:39:17SPEAKER_09: And why are all my favorite consoles beloved but short-lived?
- 1:39:21SPEAKER_09: Dreamcast, GameCube, Vita, you.
- 1:39:27SPEAKER_09: We also got some more solo piano goodness from McVaff, who has really been leaning into that style recently.
- 1:39:34SPEAKER_09: It's great to see such an accomplished remixer come back and show us this side that we've only seen glimpses of before.
- 1:39:49SPEAKER_09: I gotta stop myself before I talk about every track which I listen to I would not do.
- 1:54:25SPEAKER_09: Alright, right out the gate, I'm going to butcher some Spanish.
- 1:54:29SPEAKER_09: So please, Spanish-speaking listeners, forgive me for this following pronunciation.
- 1:54:36SPEAKER_09: That first track was Despierta La Bestia Kehai NT by the plasmas from Altered Beast.
- 1:54:44SPEAKER_09: After that, we had Diamonds and Dust by Emulator Chimpzilla, Pixel Steph, and Zach Ferris from Donkey Kong Country 2.
- 1:54:53SPEAKER_09: Following that was Illuminated Dystopia by Seven Double D9 from Invaders of the Lost Tomb.
- 1:55:02SPEAKER_09: And finally, Make a Note by Admix and Chimpzilla from Persona 5.
- 1:55:09SPEAKER_09: You know, Donkey Kong Country as a series is pretty famous for its memorable soundtracks, but there really is something special about TKC2 in particular.
- 1:55:18SPEAKER_09: Even if this particular source tune reminds me of Eataman.
- 1:55:23SPEAKER_09: But let's talk about Invaders of the Lost Tomb.
- 1:55:26SPEAKER_09: I know the Commodore 64 got a lot more love in Europe than it did in my neck of the woods, but we only have 43 C64 remixes across a catalog of more than 4,000 songs.
- 1:55:40SPEAKER_09: When we compare that to something more popular, like the Super Nintendo, with its 1,238 remixes, right at a quarter of all of them.
- 1:55:51SPEAKER_09: It's really quite something to be getting a new C64 mix.
- 1:55:54SPEAKER_09: Thanks, Seven Double D9.
- 1:55:56SPEAKER_09: Up next, we've got a couple of Zelda songs.
- 2:25:52SPEAKER_09: First off, we had Do You See by Michael Hudak from The Legend of Zelda, Majora's Mask.
- 2:25:59SPEAKER_09: And also from Majora's Mask, Healing Termina by LXE.
- 2:26:04SPEAKER_09: After that was Kremlin Crake by M Bulto and Tomas Costa from Donkey Kong Country 2.
- 2:26:12SPEAKER_09: And finally, Doray DVD by Lucas Guimares from Kirby Superstar.
- 2:26:19SPEAKER_09: So every now and then there are a couple of mix posts celebrating a milestone or anniversary.
- 2:26:26SPEAKER_09: And we got two really interesting ones in this vlog.
- 2:26:29SPEAKER_09: It was the 25th anniversary of the release of The Legend of Zelda, Majora's Mask.
- 2:26:35SPEAKER_09: And so we got a pair of remixes that fit the game like a glove.
- 2:26:39SPEAKER_09: Unsettling, but beautiful.
- 2:26:41SPEAKER_09: Just like the game.
- 2:26:43SPEAKER_09: I missed Majora on release.
- 2:26:45SPEAKER_09: In fact, I didn't have an N64 until the GameCube had already come out, so I missed both it and Ocarina of Time.
- 2:26:54SPEAKER_09: So my experience with Majora's Mask wasn't so much a sequel to Ocarina of Time that I had to wait for for forever, but I played them roughly at the same time, more or less back-to-back, as part of that special edition GameCube Zelda collection.
- 2:27:11SPEAKER_09: It's definitely one to go back and try if you haven't, and I hear the 3DS remake really streamlined the time mechanics.
- 2:27:19SPEAKER_09: I've also got a shout-out.
- 2:27:22SPEAKER_09: I've also got a shout out that Kremlin Crake, though, because in addition to being amazing, it's from a pair of newcomers whose names I have already butchered once and will not do so again.
- 2:27:34SPEAKER_09: Welcome to OCR and the Setting the Bar to High Club.
- 2:27:38SPEAKER_09: I hope you're ready for some RPG music because we've got a lot of it in the next block.
- 2:44:52SPEAKER_09: First off, we had Tim and Day Amor by AC Minnes and N.
- 2:44:56SPEAKER_09: Fanning from Final Fantasy Four.
- 2:44:58SPEAKER_09: After that was Sakura Walk Hot and I by Zalef, Colorado Weeks, Salicana, Dylach, DJ Mockram, and J.
- 2:45:06SPEAKER_09: S.
- 2:45:06SPEAKER_09: A.
- 2:45:06SPEAKER_09: Blixer from Patrian Odyssey 2.
- 2:45:10SPEAKER_09: After that was This Ain't Your Dracula's Castle by Pixels and Paradiddles and Zach Parrish from Wizards and Warriors.
- 2:45:18SPEAKER_09: And finally, Original Hoopa by Ridiculously Garrett from Super Mario World.
- 2:45:25SPEAKER_09: What is this?
- 2:45:26SPEAKER_09: Newcomer Month?
- 2:45:27SPEAKER_09: I don't think this is the first time I've heard Final Fantasy IV's Theme of Love in this sort of Latin style, which is apparently called a Polero.
- 2:45:37SPEAKER_09: Thanks, Mike Host.
- 2:45:38SPEAKER_09: But this song does lend itself to that style, and it's very well executed here.
- 2:45:44SPEAKER_09: And by newcomers.
- 2:45:46SPEAKER_09: This block of songs has also dipped its toes into the theme of the rest of the new music for this month.
- 2:45:54SPEAKER_09: Seeing as how October is that he is new seasons, we needed some spooky tracks.
- 2:46:00SPEAKER_09: Wizards and warriors out here sounding like Castlevania.
- 2:46:03SPEAKER_09: And then a new take on a classic Super Mario World Land of Coupa.
- 3:01:02SPEAKER_04: I didn't play tight.
- 3:01:03SPEAKER_04: I'm on your road.
- 3:01:10SPEAKER_04: I'm on your road Still, still as a stand to come, I'm up the line.
- 3:01:30SPEAKER_04: It's gonna do the sky.
- 3:01:37SPEAKER_04: It's gonna do the stuff.
- 3:02:08SPEAKER_04: S beyond hunter, beyond judgment, Belmars, Demon, Vampire, E-Dance, Whiprass, Hunted, Hunter, Hunter, not that Souls, souls for the harvest, screams and gnashing of teeth, nothing but chaos, everlasting circle of moon, a portrait of ruin, the dawning of sun.
- 3:02:58SPEAKER_04: The dawn of sun Death, Death of the World, Death of the Selfish, of Mr.
- 3:03:13SPEAKER_04: Brat and his lavish, Castle Holmes, Castle Holmes, Castle Hall, Mm.
- 3:04:13SPEAKER_04: Dart Dance, track your nose, and dance, beyond, undead, beyond, judge bands, bellmarks, demons, vampire, demands, whipcants, undead, but we don't have to be a good idea.
- 3:12:38SPEAKER_09: After that was Into the Wasteland by Argent from Grim Dawn.
- 3:12:43SPEAKER_09: Then we had Zelatude by Chipzilla, Rallycat, and Eminator from The Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess.
- 3:12:51SPEAKER_09: Probably the spookiest Zelda game.
- 3:12:54SPEAKER_09: After that, Old Haps Blood! By Pixels and Paradoodles, Cyril the Wolf, and Zach Parish from Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow.
- 3:13:03SPEAKER_09: Finally, you and your friends are dead.
- 3:13:06SPEAKER_09: I won the drama from Friday the 13th.
- 3:13:10SPEAKER_09: Hey, Grim Dawn! I played that game.
- 3:13:12SPEAKER_09: Every now and then I get a craving for something Diablo-ish, but I can't play for real Diablo because Blizzard is not particularly Linux friendly.
- 3:13:23SPEAKER_09: And you're truly a Linux user.
- 3:13:27SPEAKER_09: If you find yourself in the same boat, Grimdawn is a fun time.
- 3:13:32SPEAKER_09: Of course, I also have to shout out Castlevania Metal.
- 3:13:37SPEAKER_09: I just love Castlevania Metal.
- 3:13:40SPEAKER_09: And one run is Friday the 13th track.
- 3:13:42SPEAKER_09: Here is genuinely reading.
- 3:13:45SPEAKER_09: Friday the 13th track I recently learned from it.
- 3:14:54SPEAKER_09: Nintendo just released the first game in what would become a beloved and long-running series, Kirby's Dreamland.
- 3:15:02SPEAKER_09: The young designer in charge of the game, Masahiro Sakurai, had originally created the character and begun development when he was just 19.
- 3:15:11SPEAKER_09: The lead character, Twinkle Popo, was originally just a doodle that was to be used as a placeholder until a real lead character was designed.
- 3:15:20SPEAKER_09: Popo had captivated the hearts of the staff, however, and was renamed Kirby in honor of John Kirby, the lawyer who saved Nintendo in the now infamous King Kong vs.
- 3:15:31SPEAKER_09: Donkey Kong lawsuit.
- 3:15:33SPEAKER_09: Kirby would go on to star in 13 mainline platforming titles, not including remakes, and 21 spin-offs, again, not including remakes.
- 3:15:43SPEAKER_09: But of those 34 games, only four of them, usually cited as the best and most beloved, were created by Sakurai himself, who had by and large moved on to create the immensely popular Super Smash Brothers series.
- 3:16:00SPEAKER_09: But this month, that all changes with the release of the fifth original Sakurai Kirby game, Kirby Air Riders, the sequel to the beloved GameCube cult classic Kirby Air Ride.
- 3:16:14SPEAKER_09: To celebrate, we are going to listen to a block of some of my favorite Kirby remixes.
- 3:16:19SPEAKER_09: You've been hearing Don't Hold My Breath by Ben Briggs from Kirby Superstar.
- 3:16:24SPEAKER_09: Let's do four more.
- 3:34:25SPEAKER_09: That was the best two minutes and fourteen seconds of your life by Protodome from Kirby Superstar.
- 3:34:33SPEAKER_09: After that, we had Grape Soda by Hal C and Protodome from Kirby Superstar.
- 3:34:40SPEAKER_09: After that was Dreamin' Of Them Funky Ripples by Yorito from Kirby's Dreamland 3.
- 3:34:47SPEAKER_09: Then we had Blue Lava Grasslanding by The Hit Points from Kirby's Epic Yarn.
- 3:34:53SPEAKER_09: The Hit Points, by the way, are a wonderful bluegrass VGM band.
- 3:34:58SPEAKER_09: You can find their album on Bandcamp.
- 3:35:01SPEAKER_09: I highly recommend it.
- 3:35:03SPEAKER_09: Rounding us out, we had Welcome to Rainbow Resort by Select Start from Kirby's Adventure And that's it for the month of October.
- 3:35:39SPEAKER_09: Incredible month for remixes.
- 3:35:41SPEAKER_09: I have not seen one like that for a long time.
- 3:35:44SPEAKER_09: If you liked what you heard and want to chat with some of the fine people behind it, you should join us on the OC Remix forums or Discord.
- 3:35:51SPEAKER_09: Links to both are on the OC Remix main page at https colon slash slash OCRemix.org.
- 3:35:59SPEAKER_09: And while you're there, if you're feeling generous for the giving season, you can find the link to the Overclocked Remix Patreon, and you can give a little to help keep the lights on.
- 3:36:10SPEAKER_09: If you're feeling extra generous, you can donate directly to the podcast.

- 3:36:22SPEAKER_09: That donation link is on the podcast main page, Overclocked Remix Podcast.buzzsprout.com.
- 3:36:31SPEAKER_09: Our outro music was, as usual, See You Next Time Water from Final Fantasy V by Darksword.
- 3:36:38SPEAKER_09: Our interstitial music was Fluffball Rampage by Demonds from Kirby Superstar.
- 3:36:44SPEAKER_09: And as always, we have a random track to play you out with.
- 3:36:48SPEAKER_09: Let me just grab a six-sided die.
- 3:36:51SPEAKER_09: Alright, that is a four.
- 3:36:53SPEAKER_09: So that is Rhyme of the Wandering Seafarer from The Legend of Zelda, the Wind Waker by Zygo.
- 3:37:00SPEAKER_09: Alright, have a curved tacular month, and I'll see you next time.
- 3:41:38SPEAKER_04: In the valley of the beast, sun you dance to cut your way through the holes to find them so much more.
- 3:41:52SPEAKER_04: Destiny at you be home.
- 3:42:15SPEAKER_06: Let's stop green.
