- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: My co-host, Tristan McGonagall, is here.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Tristan, what's up, buddy?
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: What's up, dude?
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: Are you uh are you looking forward to a nonsense podcast?
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Um, it's it's it's that point in the year where week zero is on the horizon.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: Week away from real football?
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: A week away from real football, and um maybe we should have split the last episode into two parts and just put the second part out this week.
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: You don't think people enjoyed a three-hour?
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: It was an hour 45, please.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Um this episode is an exciting one, it's very fun.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's it's basically an airing of the grievances.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: So we started recording stuff about three weeks ago.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: It'd been a while.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: We had we had a time where we took off.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Um hiatus.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: A hiatus, as some would say.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't say that.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Um and we just haven't talked.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: We haven't talked about some of the overarching big issues that have been on our minds.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: And maybe this past week I was just thinking about some stuff.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: I'm listening to national previews.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to understand this landscape of the sport and what's going on with all the lawsuits and everything.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: And I I think I'm just upset at a few things right now, and I'd like to I'd like to talk about them.
- 2:04SPEAKER_04: Well, how about you have an oatmeal cream pie and relax?
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: Just take it.
- 2:10SPEAKER_04: Settle down and take a load off, my friend.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: I would encourage everybody to have an oatmeal cream pie right now and to just take it easy.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: Well, I dude, let's though the best way to get through these feelings is to talk it out.
- 2:24SPEAKER_04: You know, let's do it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: Rather than bottle it up, just let out all that rage.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: Maybe break something.
- 2:29SPEAKER_04: Maybe put a laminal.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: I don't want to I don't want to do that.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Something healthy like that.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: I don't want to do that.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Good good thought.
- 2:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just throwing things out there.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: That will be saved for another time.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: Maybe develop an unhealthy addiction.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Let's You want to get into gambling?
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: No.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Let's let's talk about lawsuits.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: You want to talk about lawsuits?
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: I'm sick of them.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: I'm tired of them.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: I'm tired of seeing I'm tired of trying to keep up with it.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I'm trying, I'm tired of trying to understand what any of this means.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: I'm tired of the potential that maybe all these teams are welcoming these fifth-year players, and then the NCAA decides that they're all ineligible halfway through the season.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: And I I just think there's a reality where a bunch of crap could happen from this.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm very upset that the NCAA continues to be as incompetent of an organization as they are.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm I'm upset with the NCAA.
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: What are you upset about specifically at this moment regarding said suits?
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Well, a way to avoid this would have been grandfathering in the one class that got screwed over by not having a fifth year of eligibility since COVID.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: That would be an idea.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: That would be something that we could have looked at and saw that the class of 22 was the only one out of all these years because of the overlap for this five for five ruling that they weren't gonna get that fifth year, and that's why all of these lawsuits are happening.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: We could have looked at that.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: That is insane.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: Like, I I don't know how that's not a slam tongue to just say, look, just just given the extra seats extra year.
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: Because I mean, ultimately, you grant them all the time for like regardless of time, regardless of circumstance.
- 4:27SPEAKER_04: Yet somehow this weird COVID overlap was the one where you think he had to put a foot down about it.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, the one.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: And and you know, I I know it didn't necessarily line up exactly as everybody would have hoped for, but that never happens.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: So they approved the five for five.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Most, if not all, of I think the NFL players that were going to the draft or or quote unquote out of eligibility before this rule change happened, I either already committed to the draft and that or whatever.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: But I I think you could have gotten a lot easier when it came to the suit, the lawsuits, and everything, and and if you just approved for the one class.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: I I think I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I'm looking at like the NCAA's decision here.
- 5:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it it's a it's it's truly absurd.
- 5:20SPEAKER_04: So it I totally get where you're coming from with the with the frustration on that.
- 5:23SPEAKER_04: And I I I feel like you know, we say this all the time, but you know, everyone keeps thinking that we're biding our time for the NCAA to finally die.
- 5:31SPEAKER_04: And sometimes it feels like it's on the horizon, but other times just like, why would it die?
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: You know, why uh are people really that prepared to rock the boat for really not much reason?
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: Because here's why.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: Because you could it seems that the institutions can pretty much just bully the NCAA and do whatever they want.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: So, like, why why do they need to uh shoot a torpedo at the NCAA if it doesn't really make a difference?
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: And everyone can sit here and pretend like we're all playing nice still, you know?
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I just I find it, and they finally won one with this Colorado thing.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Um, because for some reason, I I don't know the rules.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Well, I don't think there are rules when it comes to this, and I think we're just getting overpowered legal judgment to trump anything that the NCA says is a rule.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Um judge in Colorado was just like, yeah, this is actually this is nationwide now.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: So every fifth year should be you know granted an injunction to play that wasn't already.
- 6:26SPEAKER_04: So are we gonna see this five year, five, five years to play thing take hold for everyone now?
- 6:32SPEAKER_04: Where you have like no matter what, five years to play.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Well, no, the whole well, the whole thing right now is the NCA just pushing back on this one class.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Just this one class, but I but I know this one class.
- 6:42SPEAKER_04: I know that uh there there's this movement to kind of push forward, giving everybody literally just five years to play, no questions asked, regardless of redshirts and all that.
- 6:50SPEAKER_04: Like just play.
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: That's what that's what they that's what they granted.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: They granted five five for five.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: So this class of 26 is gonna come in and they're gonna have five years to play.
- 7:02SPEAKER_04: Okay, okay, okay, cool, cool.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: That's what I thought.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: That's what I thought was meant.
- 7:05SPEAKER_04: But you're just saying, like, okay, just finishing out this last class.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: It's just this one class that they could have just said, hey, fine.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, you know, go play, get your NIL money, and then we'll start fresh next season.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: Can I can I spin off the frustration?
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: That's this is very actually very current.
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: It's this idea that players are signing with NFL teams, but now coming to college teams, like they're leaving camp and just going to college, signing with college teams.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: This is this it all ties in because maybe those players that were on the cusp, maybe late round NFL picks to potentially undrafted guys that are trying to make a team right now, those guys lost out on money because they could have come back to college and made a made plenty in NIL.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: But is this not just a poor decision from those players?
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: No, because that was they weren't granted, they didn't know if they were gonna get this fifth year of eligibility.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: They didn't know.
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: So you're you're cool with these players who signed with NFL teams going back to college.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: I don't love the concept.
- 8:15SPEAKER_04: I don't, but you don't really have a huge beep with it.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: But I I feel like this is so it's one class specifically that got screwed, and that's what makes me like, and and I know tech has kind of been one of the front runners in terms of like especially with basketball, signing these guys who are looking for this injunction for this fifth year, and you know it's obviously gonna drastically change the performance of our basketball team, and for certain universities, it's even happening for football this year.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: So it's it's it's it's just I get why people are frustrated with this idea that you can go to a professional team, change your mind, and come back to college, though, because it is blurring the lines between college sports and professional sports.
- 8:56SPEAKER_04: Like, where's really the cutoff?
- 8:58SPEAKER_04: And also, it is kind of continually to screw the high school player.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: Like, it really seems like we're getting further and further away from the importance of the high school player in all of this.
- 9:10SPEAKER_04: Because it truly truly, like, while high school recording recruiting is important, it's become such a win-now mentality in all college sports that you're just trying to plug in as much maturity and grown-upness as you can into your lineups because they're the bigger, better players, rather than trying to start feeding in your youth into the program, but you're letting the older guys take up all these spots.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: So I totally get the frustration from that side as well, from like the collegiate mentality of protecting the athletics.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: That should never continue from this point on.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: Because now you're granted that extra year, right?
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: And you can't, and now you know what you're in for.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: This is the new normal, is you have five.
- 9:55SPEAKER_04: It will the the but the pressure the Ali or the the the mountain that the high school recruit has to climb is still big though, because because of the portal system, the the portal system has completely changed recruiting entirely.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: So like teams don't need to rely on what they're bringing in through the high school ranks anymore.
- 10:12SPEAKER_04: They can just sit there and plug and play with older players from the portal rather than spin the work and getting a kid from high school.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I mean the top recruits are always gonna go, they they always do to the high-level programs and everything.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: But I think what you'll start to see is more of those three-star, you know, almost four-star recruits end up going to smaller schools to start off because they have the open spaces.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Because basically, it's what it's turned into is basically it's made everybody that's not P4 pretty irrelevant in in the grand scheme of college football.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: Like, you're gonna like this hurts Tulane.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: This hurts um yeah, Memphis, this hurts like those types more than anything because they're gonna have a kid for one year, and it's pretty much a guarantee if he pops off, he's gonna go to the next level to get an NIL check from LSU or from you know Mississippi State.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Whereas if NIL was not necessarily a factor, I think you would have seen kids stay more often.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Uh, and not that they weren't gonna transfer eventually, these guys are always looking to get like you know to the next step and best competition, everything.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: But uh, yeah, I think it's gonna be pretty ultra aggressive now with what the scale is of NIL.
- 11:23SPEAKER_04: Do you do you not think it kind of cuts with both ways, though?
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: Like the idea, like, sure, it's it's harder to keep your best players as a G6 program because you're the big dog programs are gonna are probably gonna offer a bigger bag, and also they have the bigger stage to present the player on.
- 11:39SPEAKER_04: Um but don't you think that that that that in turn the G6 program may be able to offer more cash to say the second or third stringer than those programs will at the top?
- 11:51SPEAKER_04: Or do you think it's just the top just is gonna bankroll everyone top to bottom and lead scraps for the lower cases?
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, until there's a salary cap, they're just gonna bankroll them.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're just gonna outspend.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: These rosters are getting more and more expensive every single year.
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: That's a surprising turn.
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: I don't have this to have that in my notes, but I'm against the salary cap in college sports, personally.
- 12:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, dude.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: I am.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: Because it all that would do, I think what that does is that is exactly what the power, the monster two conferences want.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: They want a salary cap more than literally anyone else.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: Because what that means is the the other P4 programs who have money, like a Texas Tech and the G6 programs, especially the wealthier G6 programs, can't compete uh financially at anymore.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: Because if it's if it's more of an even dollar amount, now those programs get to offer.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: Look, we're in the conferences that people really care about, that Annabelle Scouts really care about, that TV really cares about.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: Do you really want to go to a second rate league?
- 12:58SPEAKER_04: Do you really want to go to a third rate league to play whenever you get can get the same money here and play uh at the top level?
- 13:06SPEAKER_04: Is gonna be this I I guess I think I think that undermines tech big time.
- 13:10SPEAKER_04: Tech can roll the bank, uh, the roll the bank truck up.
- 13:13SPEAKER_04: And as soon as we we cap it, I I sure we have the great facilities, great coaching staff, but I think that edge of getting utterly elite talent wanes for tech.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: But the but this level of financial backing that is happening in the NCA right now is completely uh unsustainable.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: You can't continue this.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: We hear that, but it's only as sustainable as what the boosters want to pay.
- 13:42SPEAKER_04: Truly.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: I know, I know.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: So now Cody Campbell wants to keep giving.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: No, what's what's this what what's why are you gonna stop him?
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: I think that's where you get more of a disadvantage than anything.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: It helps tech.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: I think tech's a very unique situation because when you look at the rest of the Big 12, that you can't afford to do what tech's doing right now.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: You you can't, and so naturally it's going to create a disadvantage for those universities all the time.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: And contrary to most popular belief and to actual statistics, Texas Tech is not a top five to ten spender right now.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: And yet, you know, we made the college football playoff, one of 12 teams.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: So it's not necessarily just you spend more, you're better.
- 14:35SPEAKER_04: Oh, I I understand, but those those do go hand in hand.
- 14:38SPEAKER_04: Like there has to be money to succeed.
- 14:41SPEAKER_04: There has to be, and that's how it's always.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And that's why you set that's why you set a cap at it and say, yeah, you're gonna be able to spend this money, but it's basically just evening out the market, in my opinion.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Like it's going to say, hey, you can't go out and just spend six point five million dollars on a quarterback because that's gonna be one eighth of your cap, you know, or whatever.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: And so now you're now you can you can choose to do that if that's the market, but I don't think I think it's gonna even things out a lot.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: I but I I think but I think I think that just turns the game back to what it was 20 years ago, and unfortunately, you don't you don't even or 10 even 10 years ago, but unfortunately you don't even have the fun regionality of the sport anymore.
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: So what you're getting is a watered down NFL at that point.
- 15:27SPEAKER_04: And the top lead, the Big Ten and the SEC, you have to remember that they are getting double, triple in TV revenue what everyone else is getting.
- 15:38SPEAKER_04: So that takes a massive load off of their financial pressure, and they can just allocate that money back into their programs and build up from there while everyone else still has to play by their rules while with with less money, like they can't even backfill with uh with a wealthy or powerful booster, boost a booster community, I should say.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: Like I right now, I really think you hamstring the schools who are capable of competing with those conferences by doing that.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: But right now, so people are looking at Texas this year, and they're the highest spender in college sports, they usually are.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Um this year, they're estimated to have a$50 million roster.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: 50.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: 5-0.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: A lot of money, a lot of money.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: They went in the transfer portal.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Not only are they paying for Arch Manning, despite what people want to believe about him taking NIL money, he's taking a large hefty paycheck over there uh at the University of Texas.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: But they went out and they got Cam Coleman, they got Relique Brown, they got these tackles, they got all these players that are like top-level transfer portal additions.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: And that roster is now$50 million.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: Imagine if the cap is$35 million.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: You're cutting out what Texas just got in the transfer portal, and they're gonna have to focus, refocus more on high school recruiting because those guys are gonna be naturally cheaper and younger players, and you you play the cap game, you're doing what you have to do in the NBA.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Is this a question of do you like the MLB's financial model more or do you like the NBA NFL's financial model more?
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: And to me, to create more parity and to not have the Dodgers just pay stupid amounts of money every single year to have a team, you actually have more parity in the other leagues because it's a more even playing field.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's that's a really good point.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: But whatever you whenever you talk about the comparing you see those are great examples, the MLB versus the NFL uh salary systems.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: But you have to remember, in theory, those those teams are all playing on the same level.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: They are they're they're playing in the same league, getting the same TV money every month as everybody else.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: That is not how college foot that college sports work.
- 17:50SPEAKER_04: There's two leagues who get all of the money and can reallocate that however they want, while everyone else has to play catch up with auxiliary money from their boosters.
- 18:00SPEAKER_04: So really the money, the booster money just goes back to to try to match what everyone else is getting for free just by existing in those leagues.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:10SPEAKER_04: So I'm just I I totally get what you're saying.
- 18:14SPEAKER_04: And I think I think I think both our viewpoints are valid with how the game can balance itself out.
- 18:20SPEAKER_04: Your your point is they can't hoard all the talent because there's not enough money to go around while other schools can say can be stupid and offer the running back a lot more, right?
- 18:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 18:29SPEAKER_04: Um, and waste their space.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: But on the other hand, it's those leagues are still going to attract the very top, tippy top talent just for the sake of being on TV all the time and being in the league that people say matter.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: Like they'll they'll be able to say those things.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: Does that change in any scenario?
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: Any sort of rule change?
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Not you're right, anything.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Does that change?
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Is that going to change?
- 18:55SPEAKER_04: No, but I do think that without the salary cap, you still have the opportunity for a Texas Tech to come in and be and put their money where their mouth is and figure it out.
- 19:05SPEAKER_04: You know, I we're not we a Tex Tech isn't hamstrung.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: See, it's it's funny because it seems like we're if you're everyone's trying to reel in the Texas tech.
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: Well, no, Texas Tech's not the problem.
- 19:15SPEAKER_04: Like tech Texas Tech is truly not the problem.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: The problem's the TV network still.
- 19:18SPEAKER_04: The problem is the TV network's nuking the sport and its parody.
- 19:23SPEAKER_04: So it's it if anything, I think as a casual fan, you're rooting for a Texas tech to continue to disrupt.
- 19:31SPEAKER_04: You're rooting for a Clemson's Climp a Clemson to regain its notoriety and disrupt again.
- 19:37SPEAKER_04: You're you're looking for what what was old Oregon, you know, now they're a villain.
- 19:43SPEAKER_04: But it's but you I I think we're both like aiming for the same target.
- 19:49SPEAKER_04: We just think that there's the different things.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're yeah, they're different different ways and outlets.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: And honestly, both you and I don't know if either one of these is right because you don't see it until it actually comes true, and what happens and what other parameters they're putting in place behind any of these major switches.
- 20:07SPEAKER_04: I any anything, honestly, in my opinion, anything that accelerates the sport to destruction is what I'm rooting for.
- 20:15SPEAKER_04: I think the best place for college for college sports to fix themselves is for it to utterly ruin itself first and blow up.
- 20:22SPEAKER_04: I think the whole thing needs to crumble down before they're on a good path.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: They're on a good path with that right now.
- 20:28SPEAKER_04: I I think I think the only path forward is it is a annihilation, and then the sport has to come together under a new governing body that treats it like an NFL and regionalizes the sport and allocates the money equitably across the country.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: With the TV network, I mean, not necessarily like booster money or anything like that.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what the NFL does.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: That's what that's what professional sports do, is they they they they send out the money equitably to give parity to the game.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and there needs to be a total upheaval when it comes to what a new television sort of deal looks like for this new version of college sports, because that obviously is the money driver.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's another thing I actually wanted to complain about with you today, is um nobody can complain about strength of schedule to me this year.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: I have to I've just decided that's my name.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: I've decided that today, uh the great day of August 24th, 2026, I've finally come to the conclusion that anybody who makes a strength of schedule argument is wrong.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Or if you want to place blame on any of that, it goes back to ESPN, to the SEC, to Texas AM leaving, to Missouri leaving in 2011, to all of that.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: All of that started all of this.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: You can't have super conferences and feel and and feel there's a fair and reasonable way to schedule a a postseason, a uh current ranking system.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: It's impossible.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: You've already created Created such a disadvantage from a just looking at this sport reasonably aspect of trying to understand, you know, this team could be awesome.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: This team could be really, really good, but they don't play, you know, they don't play anybody in the top, you know, 35 or 25 of all the teams.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: So how how truly good are they?
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: They could be the number one team in the nation, or they could be the number 24 team in the nation, but they played such a bad schedule.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: The reason that we're like this is because the SEC went and destroyed any sort of regionality to the sport, and I'll get in the Big Ten followed their way too.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: But that's the reason.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: And then blame the individual schools for making these decisions.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: Power, these schools have the power to make these decisions, and they chose a money-hungry decision that ultimately made the sport worse and in turn has affected strength of schedule so greatly.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: And so if you want to blame anybody, blame Texas AM in Texas.
- 22:59SPEAKER_04: I mean, if you can push it back even further, you can blame OEU.
- 23:03SPEAKER_04: Uh back in the 80s, OU sued the NCAA to have control over their uh TV network rights for the football program.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: It used to be the NCAA decided what happened TV-wise to all teams in the NCAA, which is how you would assume it would work.
- 23:20SPEAKER_04: Because everything files legally through the NCAA in theory for athletics.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: So it's kind of funny to say in the year 26, in the Big Two Six, that the sport would probably be in better shape if the NCAA was calling the TV network shots.
- 23:35SPEAKER_04: Because it would probably, of course, it would probably be much more equal across the board, trying to regionalize, keep things local, and ensure that all schools are healthy.
- 23:44SPEAKER_04: That's that would be the that would be the goal of the NCAA.
- 23:47SPEAKER_04: So, I mean that that's that's a great point.
- 23:49SPEAKER_04: I do not care about stricted schedule.
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: I do not care.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: I am very much a you are what your record says.
- 23:57SPEAKER_04: Um, and I apply that truly across the board because there's very little uh cross-reference you can make anymore.
- 24:04SPEAKER_04: And that's been disappearing as we've gone forward here.
- 24:08SPEAKER_04: Um, and that's what's that's what was supposed to be so great about the postseason tournament was okay, you get the teams with the best record and see who's truly the best.
- 24:16SPEAKER_04: See, like, all right, so this team's 12-0.
- 24:18SPEAKER_04: This see this uh 12-0 American team going to playoff versus this 12-0 SEC team.
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: Let's see who's better.
- 24:24SPEAKER_04: Like that that feels like that should be the point of the playoff rather than playing this numbers game of how do we put a 9-3 team over the 12-0 Mountain West team.
- 24:37SPEAKER_04: Like, that's that's that's like what it's become.
- 24:40SPEAKER_04: And that's that's like so antithetical to I think the idea of the postseason and the sport in general.
- 24:49SPEAKER_04: Um, so it's it's it's so frustrating to see our out of conference for Texas Tech be obliterated because of uh the risk restructuring and re-uh shuffling of all the games and all the uh all the conference affiliations and teams canceling Texas Tech because we are a really good team now, and they don't want to lose to a Big 12 team because it looks bad on the resume.
- 25:11SPEAKER_04: So it's it's just it's the worst part about it is it's all self-fulfilling prophecy.
- 25:16SPEAKER_04: The best teams are in the SEC, so when they lose to each other, it's a good loss.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: It never has to be proven that they're as good as the numbers says.
- 25:23SPEAKER_04: It's just they just say it is, so it's that's just how it is.
- 25:26SPEAKER_04: So that's how you get teams who are six and six ranked at the end of the year, you know what I mean?
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I actually saw somebody on Twitter in the past couple weeks, um, an SEC person say that it's it's unfair that the SEC now has to play the same amount of conference games that the rest of the leagues have been playing for, you know, a number of years at this point.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Um, they say it's unfair because of how deep the league is.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: That's no argument.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: There that's not an that's a non-argument right there.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: It is the way that it is because the SEC made it to way that it is.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: So it's your own fault.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: It's your own fault for allowing this to happen.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: It's you took two of the biggest brands of the Big 12, put them in your conference.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying it wasn't the financially right thing to do, it was, but you have a certain responsibility when you are that high up.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Every one of these conference commissioners has that same responsibility.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: And instead of thinking about what's good for the sport, you thought about what's good for my pocket.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: And listen, we live in a capitalistic society.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: We all want more money, but when it comes to something like this, you need to have somebody put their foot down and be like, you actually can't do that because it's gonna ruin what uh a pretty good thing of what we have going on.
- 26:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's I mean, that's that's why I was saying, like, I that's why I'm praying for the acceleration to the destruction of the sport.
- 26:54SPEAKER_04: I think it's a non-starter when people make the capitalistic argument with college sports.
- 26:59SPEAKER_04: The reason being is this thing only exists because of tax-funded institutions.
- 27:07SPEAKER_04: These are state institutions, government buildings with a logo and a football.
- 27:14SPEAKER_04: That is literally what we're watching on television.
- 27:17SPEAKER_04: And you're saying that no, we have to let the markets decide which of these government buildings deserves to make more money than the other government buildings at the end of the day.
- 27:28SPEAKER_04: And I think that's an absurd argument.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: And I think that college football and college sports in general is an American institution culturally.
- 27:36SPEAKER_04: I don't think it's the same thing as the NFL or the MLB or the uh or the NHL, whatever you want to use.
- 27:44SPEAKER_04: And I'm I'm I'm sound like a communist here, and those who know me obviously know I'm not a communist or anything like that.
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: Well, I don't know.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Give it a couple years.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: But it's it's this is something that I don't think you should let the mouse at Disney decide who lives and who dies.
- 28:05SPEAKER_04: I don't think the mouse gets to decide which communities are enriched and which communities suffer because for after a century of a good thing.
- 28:16SPEAKER_04: So I'm with you.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: I feel like regret we're kind of repeating, rehashing the same topic here.
- 28:22SPEAKER_04: Um, but I I'm I'm with you.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: Like I think I think the strength the strength of schedule thing is really stupid, and the reason why I think the argument against the SEC uh complaining about nine games is extra dumb.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: Um, and this is not like an extra this is not like an SEC hate podcast.
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: Like, I wish I could watch the SEC for what it is rather than what it is now.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: You know, like like I wish I can watch LSU versus Alabama just as a regular ass game, but I can't.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: Um but um what what's frustrating is they are 16 teams in the league, and you only want to play seven of them or eight of them.
- 28:59SPEAKER_04: Like what are you even gauging at that point for who's the best team in the league?
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: I mean, leagues should only be about 10 teams large.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: So it's because so you can get any sort of reference point to who's success who's actually good in this thing.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, so it's it's it's actually an impossible task.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: It is like I I don't, you know, put uh call out any individual AP voter all you want.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: It is an impossible task to try to understand these teams and the talent and who they play on a week basis and say that team is better than that team.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: All you're doing is just it's all gut feel.
- 29:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's really it's all quote unquote the eye test, right?
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so it's just you you can't have any sort of accurate system with such a small sample size as eight.
- 29:46SPEAKER_04: And it could obviously make the argument, you know, obviously the argument is like, oh, these teams are just really, really good, but they just kind of and even if they are, it just kind of comes back to the self-fulfilling prophecy is the networks say they're good, so therefore they're good.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: So it's like it doesn't even have to be proven that they're good, it's just said that they're good.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's they had a they had a media frenzy in August and uh said, Hey, we're the best in the com we're we're the best, you know, division of college football of all time, probably.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, Sankey could go out and be like, you know, actually, if you look at this number right here, the SEC is far and away just as good as the Arizona Cardinals.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: And people would just be like, yeah, okay.
- 30:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: It's true.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: Um it's it it just kind of comes back to the heart of what's so frustrating about modern fandom in college football is it I feel like fans they don't even care about what's on the field anymore.
- 30:36SPEAKER_04: Now it's just like a media numbers game, like where oh, my team makes more network money and gets more views on television than your team, so therefore I matter more, my team matters more, and uh only only my team and the teams around my team should be rewarded for anything.
- 30:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I just I can't imagine a more boring outlook on a sport that's supposed to be nationwide and multi-leveled.
- 31:03SPEAKER_04: Like I'm a I'm the kind of guy that truly thinks it's awesome that uh the folks out in El Paso throw on the helmets and play football.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: I think that's sick, and I think it's sick that they technically play in the same division as Alabama.
- 31:18SPEAKER_04: I think that's cool, and it's just it's it's crazy to see fans root on the depth of that.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: Like they want to see this slice, this Super S League slice of making different divisions rather than keeping the game as big and awesome as it is.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's become way less about winning and more about not losing for a lot of folks.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: And it's uh and it's disappointing.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: It's definitely led to a lot of people not um, you know, just having fun with stuff these days.
- 31:46SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: It's so political now, you know.
- 31:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, everything's like it's like it's it's okay.
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: All the votes, it's its own reality show.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: You know, it's it's it's always funny, you know.
- 31:55SPEAKER_04: We always make fun of uh our our lady friends for being so into like gossip and trashy reality TV and whatever college sports for men, it's just as bad if not worse.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: Yes, this is Love Island.
- 32:07SPEAKER_04: This is our love island.
- 32:08SPEAKER_04: It really is.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: I I have a few more, and and these could be quickfire, or we get to whatever maybe maybe we have some of these same ones.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, money in the sport and the conversation, which is what we were just talking about.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: Can I I just I hope for the day that there's a national media member that brings up the Texas Tech Red Raiders and does not say, Well, and they got deep pockets too.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, do they do they do they do we spend money on on college athletes?
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that from everybody saying the same thing over and over again that doesn't want to go any deeper than oh, we have you know we're spending some money.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: CBS in their article this year ranked the top spenders in in I.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: USC, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Michigan, Georgia, AM, Texas, Oregon, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Miami, LSU.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: That was who they put.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Those are the 40 quote unquote 40 million dollar teams in college football this year.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: There was a school that wasn't said there.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: It's the school that this podcast is based around.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: That's Texas Tech, notably, not a$40 million team.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Uh Sports Illustrated, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, and AM.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Yahoo, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, AM.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Nobody.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech is not in the top 10 right now in spending for a roster.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: And and yet, every time they're brought up in any sort of preseason discussion, somebody has to say, Oh, they're sp they got that oil money, Cody Campbell, right?
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: I'm so sick of it.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: I I totally understand, dude.
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: It always comes back to this theme that I repeat quite often on this podcast is there's nothing this sport hates more, truly, from from media to fans, especially the fans we were just discussing about who care way more about the politics of the sport than the than the on-the-field fun.
- 34:17SPEAKER_04: It is they hate an upstart disruptor.
- 34:23SPEAKER_04: They despise it.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: So they will find literally any way to undercut said successful new team.
- 34:31SPEAKER_04: Whether it's they're a team of mercenaries, which is what Texac accused of, or they play in a really weak conference, which is what we we often get as well.
- 34:42SPEAKER_04: And uh they got really lucky.
- 34:47SPEAKER_04: Or lastly, uh a crowd favorite, they uh the what how many national championships have they won?
- 34:52SPEAKER_04: Why why do we care?
- 34:54SPEAKER_04: You know, so it's it it's just this like roundabout thing of how can we sit here and discredit the upstart team?
- 35:00SPEAKER_04: Like people used to do the same crap to to the to uh similar teams we've discussed before.
- 35:05SPEAKER_04: Obviously, the NIL thing's new because it's just it's new, it's a new thing in the sport in the grand scheme of things.
- 35:11SPEAKER_04: But dude, people hate a new winner.
- 35:15SPEAKER_04: They they literally only want to see the old dogs win, and that's it.
- 35:19SPEAKER_04: Anybody, it's it's like offensive if teams who aren't the old dogs win to them, truly.
- 35:25SPEAKER_04: And if you don't have and if you don't have the right conference patch on your jersey, God help you.
- 35:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I just it's like because people people were like celebrating Vanderbilt having a little bit of success, and it and it had nothing to do with them like, oh, you know, it's getting lucky, oh anybody else.
- 35:39SPEAKER_04: Since they have the SEC patch, it's a fun story rather than those bastards out in Lubbock, you know.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or or it how about the national champion?
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, Indiana.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: How about them?
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: Probably one of the single craziest seasons of all time.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: And everybody loved it.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: And yet they spent money, and yeah, they have a hell of a coach.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: Signet is a hell of a coach.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: This this leads into my my next point.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: The most disrespected guy in probably all of the college football offseason this past year.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Joey Maguire.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: 100% one of the most disrespected people.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: You know how many probably total minutes people have talked about Joey Maguire?
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: No, this office hours, hours and hours.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's like and and everybody just assumes, oh, this guy's he's got a blank check from this oil dude, and he can go spend however much money he wants to.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: He doesn't have to he don't have to recruit.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: No, dude, how about we talk about the job that Joey how about we talk about the fact that Kalani Sataki was voted the Big 12 coach of the year last year?
- 36:48SPEAKER_04: Insane.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: Insane.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: BYU had a great year.
- 36:51SPEAKER_04: They did.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: What?
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: How about the guy who completely built a culture over the last four years in Lubbock, Texas that don't get talked about at all, brings in the right people, hires the right coordinators, replaces coaches.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: He's done a fantastic job.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: And Lubbock, Texas.
- 37:10SPEAKER_04: And not even just inside the building, dude.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: Like he's united the fan base, he's united the community, he's really fed into being the face of Texas Tech University.
- 37:20SPEAKER_04: He's not shy about it.
- 37:21SPEAKER_04: He's he he represents West Texas really well, super Texan guy, just like the perfect dude to represent tech.
- 37:27SPEAKER_04: And he's owned, and that's that's a credit to him.
- 37:29SPEAKER_04: Like he is acting the part in a good way.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: I think it's genuine.
- 37:32SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying that he's like pretending, but I'm saying he's filling the role in a really good way.
- 37:36SPEAKER_04: Because, like, if you j if you oppose that to the Matt Wells tenure, talk about a guy that was a fish out of the water, you know, like it was he just wasn't a fit.
- 37:44SPEAKER_04: And it is really frustrating that Kalani Sataki won the coach of the year, no disrespect to him.
- 37:49SPEAKER_04: And I'm not saying just because you win the conference that you deserve it automatically, sure.
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: But the man won Texas Tech's first football conference outright in decades.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:00SPEAKER_04: Decades.
- 38:01SPEAKER_04: I I think the last time Tech won an outright championship was the 60s.
- 38:05SPEAKER_04: So, like, we're talking about a whole generation almost of nearly a lifetime since Texas Tech has won an outright football championship, and people are acting like it's just because Cody Campbell is writing a blade check.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: And we're not saying that that has nothing in the of course the the army of boosters that we have, and I'm not we're not saying that that's not a big part of it.
- 38:23SPEAKER_04: And don't forget that the a lot of this money didn't just go into the paychecks, it went to the um the best facilities in the country as well.
- 38:31SPEAKER_04: But you gotta give the credit to the man who was recruiting really well before NIL truly took off.
- 38:36SPEAKER_04: Like the classes that Texas Tech was building in the early 2020s with under Julian McGuire were really, really great.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: They were the best we'd seen since like the leech years with uh with the recruiting numbers.
- 38:47SPEAKER_04: So the guy the guy doesn't get enough credit, but it kind of dude, it just circles back to the the general hate around Texas Tech.
- 38:53SPEAKER_04: And I have, of course, in my notes, I have of course the Soresby drama about how I I understand the frustration about the Soresby drama nationally, but how much was that truly overblown because it was Texas Tech?
- 39:04SPEAKER_04: Like truly.
- 39:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: That kind of just like piggies back exactly what you're talking about.
- 39:10SPEAKER_04: Like, I feel like so much ire wasn't necessarily just at Swarsby, but at Texas Tech.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: And and and to Joey, to to keep it on Joey for a second, and then I'll touch on Soresby.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: I you you I know this is just one video, just one post that I saw on Twitter, but KB and Bryant, who's a 2027 commit for Texas Tech, uh, was on the bus with his other high school teammates.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: And um, and he they had a competition.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, who would answer first?
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: And it was between KB and Bryant and uh uh John Meredith, who is currently committed to Texas, um, as a five-star really good player and everything like that.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: Joey Maguire answered in two seconds, it was two rings and answered.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: Sark didn't answer.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: Uh again, very one-off situation.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: Sark is doing important stuff, just like Joey's an important guy.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: But that it's not Cody Campbell's wallet, is why Joey Maguire is so good.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: That's not it.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Like you truly don't get it.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: You truly don't know who he is and what he's accomplished here yet.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: If that is what you go to when you talk about Joey Maguire.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: I just think that dude needs to be talked about so much more in the in the in the overall scope of hey, best coaches in the sport right now.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: You yeah, I mean, I think I think that's totally fair.
- 40:34SPEAKER_04: And I I think I think Joey Maguire needs to be celebrated more because that dude's a football coach.
- 40:40SPEAKER_04: That dude's a players coach.
- 40:42SPEAKER_04: Like, whenever you look at whenever you like re whenever people reminisce of like the old days of football, Joey Maguire is absolutely the archetype of coach that you're you're daydreaming about.
- 40:53SPEAKER_04: Wherever you think of like who's the ideal football coach, it's Joey Maguire, a guy that loves his players through and through, loves the game, and loves the fans, like wholeheartedly.
- 41:04SPEAKER_04: Like that is the football coach you dream of.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: He is a high school football coach with a college job in the most complimentary way possible.
- 41:13SPEAKER_04: Like that that dude that dude does that dude would be doing it for free.
- 41:17SPEAKER_04: No, no, so obviously he has to pay his bills, but that guy would legitimately be coaching little league football for free.
- 41:22SPEAKER_04: Like if he wasn't doing this right now.
- 41:24SPEAKER_04: 1000%.
- 41:26SPEAKER_04: 1000%.
- 41:27SPEAKER_04: And a guy like a guy like Sark who once again brought up tech schedule the other day, if you didn't see.
- 41:32SPEAKER_04: Um I did.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: Can't keep us out of his mouth.
- 41:35SPEAKER_04: Um that I don't get that same vibe.
- 41:38SPEAKER_04: I think that dude is just a a winner.
- 41:40SPEAKER_04: Like, I just want to win.
- 41:42SPEAKER_04: Like, that's I'm obsessed with winning.
- 41:43SPEAKER_04: I think that's who Sark is.
- 41:44SPEAKER_04: I don't think he loves the game like Joey Maguire does, or the players, like in the same way.
- 41:49SPEAKER_04: Obviously, I'm a red raider.
- 41:50SPEAKER_04: I think of my guy better, but I'm just using Sark as a counterexample.
- 41:54SPEAKER_04: I just don't think they're the same guy.
- 41:55SPEAKER_04: I don't think Sark loves UT like Maguire Maguire loves Tech.
- 41:59SPEAKER_04: Like, truly.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: No, and I and I do think you have to have a certain level of arrogance to be a Texas.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: You I everybody it when you know when you're in that environment, it's naturally gonna happen.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: And that that's what that environment is.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: Again, that's not to discredit Sark's coaching ability.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: I think he's done he's done a pretty good job over there.
- 42:16SPEAKER_04: I said he's a winner, he's yeah.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's done he's done very well over there.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, I just I I hate how we talk about you know, some of these SEC coaches, like you'll see the Vanderbilt coach get hyped up.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: Like people love Clark Lee.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and they're like, Well, you know, you saw what Vanderbilt did last year.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: Well, why why does Joey not get that same credit?
- 42:38SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 42:39SPEAKER_04: Why that that's it's it's it's exactly what we were talking about before, dude.
- 42:42SPEAKER_04: Like, God help you if you don't have the right patch on your jersey.
- 42:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, people hate disruptors.
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: That's what Joey is.
- 42:49SPEAKER_04: He's a media disruptor because the media loves him.
- 42:51SPEAKER_04: Um, obviously, he's got a lot of haters in the media now, but for the most part, they love him.
- 42:55SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 42:56SPEAKER_04: They want to they want to get public to talk to him, and they he's he gives a great interview.
- 42:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's genuine.
- 43:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so it's they'll he'll give it to you straight.
- 43:03SPEAKER_04: Like, he won't give you some sort of like presidential answer, he'll just tell you what he's thinking.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: And I saw like I I know that stuff gets clipped and out of context and everything like that, but he's just if you listen to anything that's longer than uh a two-second snippet of like an interview or something like that, you he usually explains everything that what he says, and so you know, people get frustrated that it's like, oh, why does Joey keep talking about Texas?
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: Why does he keep bringing it up?
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Well, because people keep asking him, yeah.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: People people asked him a million times this year.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: Hey, what did you think about what Steve Sarkeesian said?
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: You know, like this isn't and just because he's popping on a different post, whatever.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: That's another tangent.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: But no, Joey, I just feel like has been disrespected uh about who he's brought to Lubbock, Texas, and what and the change, and it has all been instituted by him.
- 43:55SPEAKER_04: People just want to see tech lose because that's what tech's supposed to do, and now that we're not losing, and we have a vocal.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: Coach, they're mad about it.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: What else you got?
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: I it sounded like you had something else in the in the in the I have I have some I have a couple more, but I wanted to I wanted to be courteous to you.
- 44:12SPEAKER_04: I the thing is I've just been kind of ping-ponging with you.
- 44:15SPEAKER_04: I got you with yeah, with because I I every I'm touching everything that I have down to.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: Big 12 recruiting.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: Um there was a post that came out, I believe, on three, put out something.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: And by the way, this is very similar in the ACC right now as it is the Big 12, where there's just one team that's just dominating right now, the class of 2027 and 20 and beyond.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: And right now it's Miami for the ACC.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: They have nine out of the 10 highest recruits right now in the class of 27 for the ACC, the entire conference.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech has nine out of 10 of the best recruits of all of the Big 12 conference.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: Houston had one of them in there.
- 44:58SPEAKER_04: Look at them go.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: Hey, they're getting like a dude at quarterback here.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: I think it's next year.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: It's nuts.
- 45:04SPEAKER_04: Just because they don't have like the top 10 doesn't mean they're not getting dudes.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: Houston always manages to find a five-star or something every once in a while.
- 45:12SPEAKER_04: They're like the best G6 for a long time, G5 for a long time.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: So it's and they're they're in a huge recruiting bed.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: They're in one of the biggest recruiting cities of all in America.
- 45:22SPEAKER_04: Look, they they just need to get the boosters in that city to really care.
- 45:25SPEAKER_04: And I think they can build some winners there.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: I was looking at the 2027 recruiting ranks right now.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech is in the top 10.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: Um, couple five stars, good amount of four stars.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: The next closest in the Big 12.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: Do you want to guess that number for the class of 2027?
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go all of college football.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: Lower.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: 22 lower.
- 45:51SPEAKER_04: 31.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: Almost there, a little lower.
- 45:55SPEAKER_04: Are you serious?
- 45:56SPEAKER_04: 35.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: 32.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: Oh my god, are you serious?
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: 32.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: And you wouldn't guess the school.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: And this is according to 247.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: No, but another purple team.
- 46:06SPEAKER_04: K-State.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: K-State.
- 46:09SPEAKER_04: You got that new coach excitement, yeah.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: K-State right now is the second highest recruiting class in the Big 12 for the class of 2027, according to 24-7 sports.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: Um they're 32 in the entire nation right now.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: That's the second best recruiting class in the class of 2027.
- 46:33SPEAKER_04: 32 is not even bad.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: 32 for the second in the conference?
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: Not that's not good.
- 46:41SPEAKER_04: But I'm saying, like, that's not a bad recruiting number.
- 46:43SPEAKER_04: So I'm saying, like, generally, like, that's pretty solid.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, no, I mean, yeah, yeah.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, during Cliff, we would have killed for the 32nd best class.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: But there needs to be we need some help.
- 46:57SPEAKER_04: That's that's a great.
- 46:59SPEAKER_04: That's a can I you would you have like a little tangent, right?
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: No, no, go ahead.
- 47:03SPEAKER_04: Okay, I like to hear your thoughts.
- 47:04SPEAKER_04: One of my things here, it says Big 12 bullshittery.
- 47:07SPEAKER_04: Oh, so here it is.
- 47:09SPEAKER_04: So I just want to hit my first marks here.
- 47:12SPEAKER_04: It's I think the fans, the fringe fans of TechStech who think that TechSTech needs to go to the SEC or Big Ten or the Big Ten don't live in the current reality.
- 47:22SPEAKER_04: If that was the case, we would be there.
- 47:25SPEAKER_04: That's not tech isn't choosing to be in the Big 12 right now.
- 47:29SPEAKER_04: And I'm not even a guy that's like hates being in the Big 12.
- 47:31SPEAKER_04: I'm just saying that is the reality.
- 47:32SPEAKER_04: We're here out of convenience.
- 47:34SPEAKER_04: Or I mean other not convenience, but like out of obligation because there's no other option.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:40SPEAKER_04: Um, and but I totally get the frustration with the Big 12 right now.
- 47:45SPEAKER_04: It's it between mostly my most of my frustration came from all the bull crap the other teams have been throwing at tech lately.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: Between the tortillas situation, I cannot believe that the other teams went against tech about the tortillas.
- 48:00SPEAKER_04: I thought that was utterly asinine.
- 48:03SPEAKER_04: Um the knife gate from Kansas, once again, completely asinine to even just assume that someone threw a knife at them.
- 48:12SPEAKER_04: Are you kidding me?
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:14SPEAKER_04: To assume that it's true first?
- 48:17SPEAKER_04: Are you kidding me?
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: Um, and of course the Soresby drama with like wanting to charge tech for the legal fees of them trying to get lawyers together.
- 48:25SPEAKER_04: Are you kidding me?
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: Jamie Pollard, man.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: What are you doing?
- 48:28SPEAKER_04: It's it's Kansas and Iowa State, dude.
- 48:31SPEAKER_04: I I don't know what is going on with their athletic departments against tech, but I understand my final point before I let you go go nuts is I understand this is not a one-team league, and that's how teams fall apart.
- 48:43SPEAKER_04: That's how they fracture and die, like the old Big 12.
- 48:46SPEAKER_04: But I and I'm not asking for tech to receive special treatment, but it feels like tech is being singled out over and over again.
- 48:56SPEAKER_04: It it sounds like a victim mentality, but it really looks like that is like the actual occurrence of events here.
- 49:03SPEAKER_04: It doesn't feel like other Big 12 teams are having to make concessions like tech is or having to put up with false accusations and uh legal bills like anyone else's.
- 49:14SPEAKER_04: Like this is just absurd.
- 49:16SPEAKER_04: But please continue on with the Big 12 ranking thing.
- 49:19SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm just like, you know, the point that the point that Cody said earlier in the year when they were talking about, you know, what rising other ships around us, or whatever he was saying about bringing up the rest of the Big 12.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: He's not wrong.
- 49:33SPEAKER_04: He's not wrong.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: Does it does he come off as kind of a dick saying that?
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a little bit.
- 49:37SPEAKER_01: Uh does he?
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: He does.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, it's offensive about that statement.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: Well, because he's a rich billionaire that that invests very heavily into his alma mater that the other schools don't have.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: And it's it's like it's like saying, Hey, Jed the Paris Hilton meme, just don't be poor.
- 49:59SPEAKER_04: Right, but it but he's it's a it's a it's a friendly call you out.
- 50:04SPEAKER_04: Like it's a friendly, like, hey, any other boosters.
- 50:07SPEAKER_04: Nobody wants to hear that community.
- 50:09SPEAKER_01: Nobody wants to hear that from tech right now.
- 50:11SPEAKER_04: You know, it's like it's it's not even trash talk.
- 50:14SPEAKER_04: He's it's like saying, like, you know, we're we're we're we're we're complaining about the state of the sport, about how the Big 12 is being left behind.
- 50:21SPEAKER_04: Like that literally only changes if you try harder.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:25SPEAKER_04: And the other if the other teams don't want to hear that, then quite frankly, they're being babies.
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: I I I I don't understand how you could be offended by that statement.
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: Like, truly.
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I think I think it comes back to we're good.
- 50:40SPEAKER_01: Like tech's really good.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: Tech's fine.
- 50:42SPEAKER_01: Tech's fine right now.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: We're we're we don't need to be a voice for the conference, though.
- 50:46SPEAKER_01: We win.
- 50:47SPEAKER_04: Why though?
- 50:48SPEAKER_01: That one because all you need to do is win.
- 50:51SPEAKER_01: All that's all you need to do, and the narrative changes.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: You don't have to push something through your interviews and through your statements and putting out official shit.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: Like, you don't have to do that.
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: All you have to do if you're Texas Tech is win and continue winning, and they're doing a great job of that, but I do think they're being a little excessive with what they're saying as far as like coming across as like the voice for the conference.
- 51:17SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 51:18SPEAKER_04: I mean, Texas Tech kind of was a big factor in saving the Big 12 when things were falling apart.
- 51:23SPEAKER_01: It was, and they've and they've was a they've done the job, they've done a great job of bringing the conference up from my very low point.
- 51:32SPEAKER_04: The Big 12 was asking for a leader, and now that Texas Tech is stepping up and doing so, they don't like it.
- 51:40SPEAKER_04: Like what I think it's a crabs in the bucket mentality.
- 51:44SPEAKER_04: I think they're just mad that it's not them ultimately.
- 51:47SPEAKER_04: I think that they're mad that they probably have an elephant that is ready to just wreck their shit every Saturday now.
- 51:55SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 51:56SPEAKER_04: Like it's just I I think it's a frustration on their side thing.
- 52:00SPEAKER_04: Rather, they like I really think their Fifi's are being hurt, and I I think that they need to grow up a little bit.
- 52:06SPEAKER_04: I think they're acting like little babies, I think, with if they're upset about that.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: Little babies, little baby boys, little babies little babies in Manhattan, Kansas, little babies in in Ames, Iowa's Iowa and Lawrence, Kansas.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: I want to I want to be one again.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: I like the uh I liked when the Big 12 came together after Texas and OU left, and I liked the camaraderie that we had amongst schools, yeah.
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: And I know that I know that that stuff is not it's naturally gonna go away over time, you know, time heals all wounds, and also um, you know, it grows their exactly.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: And so I I don't know if I'm just yelling at clouds here, but I'm just like there's a few things that we just don't have to speak on if if you're leadership level at Texas Tech University right now, that just be happy with where we're at, man.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: Like you're we're doing everything right internally for sure.
- 53:03SPEAKER_01: You're doing everything right, you're all connected.
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: We have a damn good football team that we're gonna put out on the field, and we're competing for Big 12 titles and beyond.
- 53:10SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 53:11SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 53:12SPEAKER_04: I I'm I'm with you.
- 53:13SPEAKER_04: I I I think that I think for us to go ahead and crown ourselves, it's a little premature as well.
- 53:18SPEAKER_04: Like you won you win one title, granted, it was an outstanding year, and you just ran right through everybody pretty much.
- 53:25SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, but keep doing that, do that several real years in a row, like build a dynasty, become a Clemson, right?
- 53:33SPEAKER_04: Yep, like it's that's that's what you need to do and go far in the playoff.
- 53:37SPEAKER_04: And then no one can really say anything.
- 53:40SPEAKER_04: And you obviously, and then your actions, like you're kind of leading to like your actions speak louder than your words anyway, at that point.
- 53:45SPEAKER_04: I just think Tex Tech was really frustrated with the treatment it was getting from the Big 12 office as well.
- 53:50SPEAKER_04: Like, and I I I think that TechStech was like, in a way, kind of demanding a stronger presence in Irving, Texas, because it was a little meek there during all the bull crap going down this past year.
- 54:03SPEAKER_01: Yep, definitely, and and definitely a good point to bring up.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: Um I have two points, but I think I'm just gonna make one.
- 54:11SPEAKER_01: Um you brought up Brendan Sworesby a couple times, and we didn't have this podcast when uh all that was going down.
- 54:18SPEAKER_01: Well, we did, but we didn't record any episodes.
- 54:21SPEAKER_01: Um it's official that Indiana and Cincinnati are officially just not gonna get anything for this.
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: Like uh it's officially been swept under the rug that Brendan Soresby played football for both of these universities and uh gambled the entire time.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: They knew that he gambled the entire time.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm not gonna say that the universities knew that he gambled the entire time, but now it's come out that everybody knows he was gambling the entire time.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, those programs are not gonna get punished.
- 54:55SPEAKER_01: No, at all.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: And one of them were because you talk to new people that are kind of in and out of college sports, and they're like, Oh, yeah, that Texas Tech kid gambled his freaking opportunities away, and he did all this horrible stuff that you should never do.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: And uh, while I agree that he should not have been granted an injunction, he should not have played this year, all that good stuff.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: Um, why are we just pretending like Indiana and Cincinnati didn't do anything wrong here?
- 55:22SPEAKER_04: Because the sport is such a right here, right now, in the moment thing, and I think that they just wanted to crucify a school.
- 55:31SPEAKER_04: And they I think they wanted they would have a harder time making a fun bill and out of Cincinnati and Indiana simply just because he wasn't there anymore.
- 55:37SPEAKER_04: It's lazy, but I think it's just I think it's honestly the simplest answer there for the correct one.
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: It's like it's cool, it's just swept on like everything's fine, even though the only time that he actually gambled on the sport of college football was at Indiana, who just won a national championship, who again not gonna get any sort of ain't nobody talking about Indiana and Brendan Sworesby.
- 55:57SPEAKER_04: On the swing team, by the way.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, not a not a soul.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: Uh and then played two, not one, two full seasons at the University of Cincinnati as their starting quarterback and uh and gambled the entire time, and the University of Cincinnati is getting nothing.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: I I just want to make sure that we're all on the same pitch.
- 56:21SPEAKER_04: And I think it's rich that Cincinnati was ready to throw in and sue tech over it all, too.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: And it's yeah, I think they came to their senses and realized, hey, that would be pretty stupid.
- 56:37SPEAKER_04: I think it was unfortunate timing for Texas Tech that this that it blew up in our faces like it did.
- 56:44SPEAKER_04: It happened in the dog days of summer when there was no one, nothing to talk about, and nothing gets people going like talking about a villain.
- 56:52SPEAKER_04: And they are gift-rafted a villain whenever that judge said that he can play.
- 56:59SPEAKER_04: And tech pro like we always say on this podcast, maybe it's Cope, but we keep saying that tech was not expecting him to get cleared to play.
- 57:06SPEAKER_04: The coaching staff was not expecting him to get cleared to play.
- 57:09SPEAKER_04: They're stuck in an incredibly difficult position of either defending their boy or throwing him under the bus.
- 57:15SPEAKER_04: And hence we got this nuclear wasteland of a dragging through the mud of everybody involved with uh related TechSech.
- 57:24SPEAKER_04: I still think, like, on its face, even if this wasn't tech, this whole thing was completely blown out of the uh proportion.
- 57:33SPEAKER_04: Like completely.
- 57:35SPEAKER_04: Um, it's to me the it to me, it highlighted the hypocrisy of what people actually care about with that their players are doing.
- 57:43SPEAKER_04: Like how they really don't care if the guys have fallen in other ways, but if he gambled on a game that he's not even playing in, he deserves to you know have his name tarnished forever.
- 57:56SPEAKER_04: Can't even play professionally, that's not even in college ball anymore.
- 57:59SPEAKER_04: I think he'll sow over the top, dude.
- 58:01SPEAKER_04: Like, truly.
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I truly think from a uh a morality uh perspective of just like what what is good and what is wrong, um, it was taken way out of proportion for sure.
- 58:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I do think you know you commit, I think gambling is a pretty big cardinal sin in athletics and sports, uh, especially at this level, and he should have known better.
- 58:28SPEAKER_01: And I'm disappointed that he didn't.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, if you're trying to tell me that the 17 players that have been arrested at the University of Georgia over the last three years for reckless driving is it equates to, you know, even the level of gambling that he did, come on.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: It's you're not gonna win that, you're not gonna win the morality argument for me.
- 58:51SPEAKER_01: Um, but what you are probably gonna win is the the fact that they needed to set a precedent, and and they do, they do.
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: I wish they would catch more of you know, more of the the folks that gamble in the NCAA right now because I'm sure it's a hell of a lot more than Brendan Soresby.
- 59:09SPEAKER_04: I bet there's one in every single locker room in the country, and I'm not exaggerating.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, I don't doubt it.
- 59:14SPEAKER_01: And so I I think I think the the uh pushback that Joey has shown this year when talking in interviews about the whole situation of just like you know, everybody got to check their their demons in their closet right now because we all got them, we all got bad shit that happens at these programs, like there's so much money involved with all this stuff.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: There's you know, we're dealing with 18 to 23 year old kids that do dumb shit all the time.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: And if if we're talking about like some moral standard of this institution is not morally right for supporting the kid through this, um, I I just have a different standpoint.
- 59:52SPEAKER_04: Dude, absolutely, man.
- 59:53SPEAKER_04: And it it it tech like Tech Tech was in the perfect place to be lightning rod at the moment because this was right after the really fun Joey Maguire's Steve Sarkeesian back and forth.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_04: And then this so tech was already top of mind for everybody, and then then this happens and it went from really fun to like really not fun, you know, with with with the way it exploded, and it's just it really showed the whole ass of a lot of fans on this, you know, because it like you like you're contacting on like on the on a moral standard, there were legitimately people out there who were saying I can't wait to watch him break his leg and never be able to walk again.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_04: Like legitimately, yeah.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_04: People were out there like rooting for his career to end over him gambling on it on a on a team that he wasn't even playing on.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_04: Like it's just in in the in the they want to talk about the morality and the integrity of the game.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_04: It's like it'd be a break.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_04: This is for fun at the end of the day, it's for entertainment.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_04: And you're you that uh to me, that says you're like you're way too deep.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_04: You are way too deep if you're actively rooting for a kid to possibly never walk again.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_04: Like that's insane, or even there was legit people hoping you would die.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_04: No, yeah.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: Those folks just have no they're they mean nothing.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: They're go to church nothing.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_03: My god.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, dude.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: The la the last thing I'll bring up on this airing of grievances before week zero of college football.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_01: And next week we'll talk Appling Christian um and some and some fun tech stuff going on.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_01: But we're gonna name this the rambles of two madmen.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I think just airing of grievances.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, I I think it's good to have this episode because then we won't have the the means to talk about it throughout the season, and we can focus more on football and and what else is to come uh during the season.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: Could you imagine if we mattered the amount of shit that would get clipped out of this episode?
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: If we mattered even a little, even a little on the grand scheme.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: My last grievance before we get to a song of the week.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_01: Um the schedule.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_01: Can anybody tell me why the schedule is the way that it is in college football?
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: First off, why have we not started college football already?
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_01: Why do we have this month of August that nothing is happening except for baseball?
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: And you could probably start a week or two earlier.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_01: This is more to my point.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: Hear me out.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: You can probably start a week or two earlier.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: Hang on.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: You go through the 13-week season.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_01: Every team plays 12 games and they get their bye week.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: Conference championship game is the week after, the last day of the regular season, which is usually the first week of December.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_01: First weekend of December is national or uh conference championship week.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_01: The first round of the playoff does not start so first weekend of September, conference championship weekend, the 5th of December.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_01: Most of the games are going to be played on that Saturday, if not Friday, the 4th, or something like that.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_01: The first game of the CFP, first round, December 18th.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_01: So for some reason, they give two weeks in between conference championship and the first round of the playoff.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: Maybe that makes sense to some.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_01: You get two weeks, everybody gets ready to go, you figure out travel plans, okay.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: Why is the quarterfinals two weeks after that?
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: Why is why is the first round games played on December 18th and 19th, and then the quarterfinals aren't played until New Year's Eve and New Year's?
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: What's the meaning of this?
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_04: I like so you're ending this on a positive note, I see.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_04: A very friendly, unifying one.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: And then there's two weeks in between the quarterfinals and the semifinals.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: And then there's two weeks between that and the national championship game.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: Why are we ending college football on January 25th?
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_01: What is the meaning of this?
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_04: So you are were you serious about why we don't start the game start the season earlier than we do?
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_04: Or is that more of a joke?
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: You can kind of make it a joke, but also like you could have they could have started this week.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean a lot of college.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_04: If they're worried, I haven't even started class yet.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_01: If they're worried about a holiday schedule or something like that, or maybe like ending the regular season before Thanksgiving, whatever, keep it the same.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: Why are there why does it take six weeks, eight weeks to get through the college football playoff?
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_04: No, that that's absurd.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_04: That and at that point, are are they the they can really like spread them out too?
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_04: Like you can really sprinkle them in to make sure that everyone's getting a little bit of football, like in the postseason constantly.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_04: Because at that point, the season's over.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_04: Like you don't even have to worry about like what's this gonna override.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_04: There's only so many games, like there's only so many uh games in that postseason inventory to move.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_04: You should be able to condense them, get it done, and have an open window where none of them overlap and just keep feeding that hose of the constant football content.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_04: I'm with you, dude.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_04: Like it it should be expedited, like it needs to be a week apart.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_01: They worry about the transfer portal and nothing lines up with the end of the season if you're if you're still in it.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_01: Speed it up.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_01: How about don't put two weeks between every single college football playoff game?
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_01: That is round.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: How about that?
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_04: What is even the what is even the point?
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_01: What what is the point?
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: Like I maybe I can understand putting two weeks between the conference championship games and the start of the college football playoff.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_01: Maybe I'll hear you out.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_04: You better get plenty of bowls in there then.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_01: Well, sure.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_01: But maybe I'll hear that out.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_01: Why do you then need another two weeks and then another two weeks and then another two weeks?
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_04: It's it's absurd.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_04: It needs to be expedited.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: I think this is a common complaint amongst all fans.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_04: Like speed this up.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_04: Because like honestly, dude, by the time it's late January, I don't even care anymore.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_04: You know, it's it's like I have like moved on from college football at that point.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_04: You know, like it's it's time for college basketball at that point.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_04: So it's it's yeah, no, I I'm completely with you.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_04: It's it's a totally absurd system.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_04: Just speed it up.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_04: I wonder if it has to do with either the bowls who host them, the T V networks.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_01: Ah, it's it's a it's gotta be a TV network, but uh the you go you go 25 days in January where there's no other bowl games that are being played in those 25 days.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_04: With the NFL postseason, are they all a week apart?
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_04: So yeah, what what the hell are we even doing then?
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_01: They're all a week apart.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_04: Besides the Super Bowl, which is like a few weeks after, right?
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_01: The Super Bowl is usually like early February.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I think it's Valentine's Day this year.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_04: Championships, isn't it?
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_01: Uh well they do they do two weeks between the Super Bowl and the and the AFC and NFC championships because they usually they fit the Pro Bowl in there.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_01: So it's week in between.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_04: That's the only one that's separated by two weeks, and you can kind of understand it, but you don't even need to do that for calls for ball.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_04: Just speed it up.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't I don't know who decided this.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_04: So every literally everyone is saying that everyone's performing so much poorly if they have too much time off.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_04: Hence the people could saying, like, I don't even want the buy.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_04: I just want to I just want to host the game and crush the low seed.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_01: Because if you go and win your comments championship and you're a top four seed, you do not play until you won't play until the 30th of December.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_01: That's you'll go you'll go a month.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_01: Month, a whole month.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_01: A month.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_04: You get so rusty.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_04: You might as well be in the offseason, like bodily at that point.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_04: Like you don't even get the reps.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_04: Your your your local community doesn't even get the uh boost of hosting another home game, a big time home game, and you have to go to some neutral site no one cares about, yeah, and be rusty as shit and probably lose.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_04: That's how the bye weeks work.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_04: Like that's how it works.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's been proven over and over again here.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: They're they're again NCAA.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_01: What are we what are we doing?
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_01: Dude, who's who who runs this?
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_04: Who runs this shit?
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_04: Monkeys?
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_04: Monkeys.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_04: You're gonna eat this.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_04: You go to the NCAA office, you open the door, it's a bunch of monkeys at computers, dude.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_01: The symbols and everything.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_04: They're just there's there's an orangutan at the top with a tie on.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_04: He's apparently in charge.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_01: Um injunction.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_04: But dude, speaking of like last era grievances on the on your point, stop with the neutral side bowl games in the quarterfinals.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_04: Stop it.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_04: Do not make people play multiple neutral side games that are technically bowl games before the championship.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_04: Enough.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_04: You don't want to save the new site for the semifinal.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_01: You're not hyped up for the Fiesta Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Peach Bowl in the quarterfinal?
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_01: That's insane.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_01: Those are you know, yeah, like if this game wasn't played in Dallas, Texas, you know, I don't think I'd watch it.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_04: Dude, I like that would be such a boost for the bye week team to have it at home.
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_04: So you let the teams who are battling it out to face you, they get their home game over SireC, and they have to come to your house.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_04: Like, why the hell don't you get that advantage?
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, because four of the bowl games are gonna get left out every year.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_04: But just relegate them to uh it's okay.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_04: The bulls gotta go.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_04: It's over.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_04: No, not not not I don't mean no more bowl games.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_04: I mean more of like the bulls calling the shots.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_04: Like that's gotta stop.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_04: It's it's it doesn't make any sense anymore.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_04: We are the FCS now.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_04: The FPS is now the FCS in its structure in the postseason at this point.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_04: It's a playoff system.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_04: Like the the at least the the big time, everything else is in is uh is in it at this point.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_04: I mean it always has been, but like everything else is in IT, it's participation, you're rewarding the players for having a good season.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_04: Maybe the fans get to go to a cool vacation spot.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_01: Or they get to go to Shreveport.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_04: Or you get to go, what did I just say?
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_01: Um cool vacation spots.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_04: So you you gotta let you gotta let the postseason act like a postseason rather than let these bowls call all the shots.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_04: Like it's is it a tournament or not?
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_04: Are you just letting these these very important Phoenix Arizona stadium bowls?
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_01: They really should put the bowl games in just like the most tropical of locations, like just like to entice the teams to go and have a good one.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_01: I'm okay if the Alamo Dome doesn't happen anymore.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_01: You gotta let these cities yeah, yeah, and yeah, that's fair.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_01: All the all the cities that they're in usually enjoy it.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, it's it's just a little economic economic boost, you know.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_04: But it would be funny.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_01: It would be funny if they send them to like the Maldives.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_01: Like something crazy.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_01: Like the Caribbean Bowl.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_01: They go out and go to St.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_01: Lucia or something like that, and all the teams are like, hell yeah, let's play.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_04: The Vatican Bowl.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_01: The Vatican Bowl, St.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_04: Peter's Square.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_01: Send them all over the the world.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_01: Um that's it.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_01: That's all we have to air.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_01: We have no more grievances.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_01: We have no more grievances.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: We've let them all out.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, we probably have more grievances, but we won't we won't get to those until we want to.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_01: This is our podcast.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_01: We can do whatever we want.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_04: We've established that I'm a communist.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_01: The NCA is monkeys.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_01: My NCA is monkeys.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_01: You're a communist.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_01: Joey Maguire deserves a statue, and Indiana actually deserves to have their title ripped away from them because of Brendan Sorsby.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_04: Death penalty to Cincinnati.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_04: And also UT while we're at it.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, why not?
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_04: Maybe throw them in there.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_04: Just do SMU again, just because it'll be kind of fun to me.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_01: But honestly, the biggest highlight tech's not a top seven, eight, nine spender in uh in college football this year.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_01: So yes.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, because we still have a great team.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_01: I know, yeah.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_01: It gets that show.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_01: We still have a great team, and it also shows that you don't need to freaking mention every time that we have deep pockets.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_01: How about that?
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_01: Um what is your song of the week?
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_04: Dude, my song of the week is uh a Texas country band.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_04: I know that y'all are expecting more reggae, but this time I'll come with a Texas country rock outfit with the former Mike and the Moon Pies.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_04: I'm still mad they changed the band name.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_04: Like the Moon Pies is such a good band name.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_04: Silverada is the band name, and the song is off their new album, Jack.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_04: The song is Jack, just a hilarious jam about being a loser, not doing shit.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_04: But it's it's it's still because you ain't doing Jack.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_04: Like it's it's a funny, it's a funny song.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_04: I love it, and it's an absolute bop.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_04: So Jack.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_02: But you ain't doing Jack.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_01: We love it.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_01: We always love a new song that I've never heard of.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_01: That's disappointing.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_01: That's such a downgrade of a name.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_04: Bike in the Moopie is awesome.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_01: What even is Silverado?
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_01: Is that like a place?
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_04: I think it's just a redneck way to say Silverado.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding me?
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_01: That if that's the if that's the reasoning, I'm out.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_04: How about I asked Chat GDP GGPT?
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_01: Chat strikes again.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_04: Get it.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_04: Uh yours out.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_01: My song of the week.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_01: Well, we were airing our grievances, so I feel like this is fair.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_01: Um people hating, red clay strays.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: It's just a good old song about people hating on shit.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_01: And uh just like we did for the last hour.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_01: We've just decided to hate the NCAA.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_04: And I people hate on UCF all the time.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_01: You know, yeah, you're people hating on UCF, I'm people hating on the SEC.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_01: Um, and honestly, I hate Greg Sankey.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_01: I can say that.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_01: I hate him.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_01: I think he's a villain.
- 1:14:27SPEAKER_01: I think he's a true, true blue villain.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_01: And uh he's a vampire.
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_01: He's a vampire.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_01: So uh people hating.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_03: Red clay stripes soul to mix in there, dude.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_04: We gotta get this is a good mix, right?
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_04: This is this isn't a meme like the last week.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_01: No, well, yours was a meme.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_04: Mine was a meme.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_01: Yours was a meme.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_01: I but uh is Eddie Grant really a meme, or is he just inevitable?
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_01: Right.
