- 0:05Speaker 1: Appoch Production.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Welcome to Real Crime with Adam Shand. I'm your host,
- 0:16Speaker 2: Adam Shand. In the eighties and nineties, I watched heroin
- 0:20Speaker 2: ravage my community.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Heroin deaths in New South Wales have risen dramatically over
- 0:26Speaker 3: the last decade. Emergency services report hundreds of fatal overdoses statewide.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I never tried it myself, but it must have been
- 0:35Speaker 2: some kind of rush because it took hold of some
- 0:38Speaker 2: people very close to me and exacted a heavy toll.
- 0:42Speaker 4: It destroyed lives, turned good.
- 0:44Speaker 2: People into thieves and thugs, separated them from family and
- 0:48Speaker 2: loved ones.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Most overdoses occur quietly at home and epidemic moving in
- 0:53Speaker 3: plain sight.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It killed some, and some suffer to this day from
- 0:58Speaker 2: their encounter with this vicious, merciless substance. I've known a
- 1:02Speaker 2: few people who were able to leave it behind and
- 1:05Speaker 2: make a success of their lives, to recapture their youthful potential.
- 1:09Speaker 1: After years of addiction and crime.
- 1:12Speaker 3: One former heroin user is proving that change is possible.
- 1:16Speaker 4: My guest today did just that.
- 1:19Speaker 2: He stopped blaming others and himself for his addiction and
- 1:22Speaker 2: left that life and the crime that went with it. Behind.
- 1:26Speaker 2: There's much to inspire others in the redemption of Dean King.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Between the ages of thirteen or fourteen and twenty seven,
- 1:34Speaker 2: Dean didn't spend a single full year out of jail.
- 1:38Speaker 2: He was a good crook, a staunch from ruthless man
- 1:41Speaker 2: who thrived in the jail system, and he was destined
- 1:44Speaker 2: to spend most of his life behind bars in service
- 1:47Speaker 2: to his addiction, until one day he made a fateful decision.
- 1:53Speaker 2: He's written a book about it called King Hit, which
- 1:55Speaker 2: he hopes will be turned into a movie one day soon.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And it's my pleasure to welcome Dean King to real crime.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Gady Dean.
- 2:04Speaker 2: As you got out of it, mate, very well, Thank you.
- 2:07Speaker 2: It's a great pleasure to talk to you. I've looked
- 2:09Speaker 2: at all your videos on YouTube and Instagram and so forth,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and I feel like I know you. You're a very good
- 2:14Speaker 2: storyteller because you've lived that real life and you're still
- 2:18Speaker 2: around to tell the story.
- 2:21Speaker 4: How did you get through all that?
- 2:23Speaker 5: Well, it's a good question because I shouldn't have got
- 2:27Speaker 5: through it, you know, Like destiny is a funny thing,
- 2:31Speaker 5: and I had no comprehension that I was going to
- 2:35Speaker 5: come out of it the way that I came out
- 2:38Speaker 5: of it. From a rational point of view, how did
- 2:41Speaker 5: I get through it? I had a moment when I
- 2:45Speaker 5: hit a rehab with no intentions whatsoever to change my recidivism,
- 2:54Speaker 5: my behavior, my outlook on life.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I went to this rehab to escape. I had a
- 3:03Speaker 1: plan that I was going to knock off there vent.
- 3:06Speaker 5: I was going to go back to Sydney and I
- 3:10Speaker 5: was going to continue down the path that I'd been
- 3:14Speaker 5: on all my life. And this rehab was the turning
- 3:19Speaker 5: point in my life. What started out as a place
- 3:22Speaker 5: that I absolutely despised with a passion, I ended up
- 3:28Speaker 5: loving everybody that was in there, and I was so
- 3:32Speaker 5: appreciated that I was very fortunate to go to a
- 3:37Speaker 5: place that I hated. So that was the start of
- 3:43Speaker 5: my turnaround. As I said, Destiny, call it an accident. Yeah, mate,
- 3:48Speaker 5: I had no intentions of change and I didn't think
- 3:51Speaker 5: I had a problem. And if you look back over
- 3:55Speaker 5: my life, a person at that caliber of crime and
- 4:01Speaker 5: disregard and disrespect for society and other people and myself,
- 4:09Speaker 5: I still pinched myself today that I'm here to tell
- 4:12Speaker 5: this story.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm glad you are to be honest, because you're
- 4:16Speaker 2: like many guys who go through this year. It's sort
- 4:19Speaker 2: of dirty on the earth, dirty on everything. And you
- 4:23Speaker 2: went into rehab there, and I guess in that life
- 4:27Speaker 2: you bottle all your emotions up, and to show emotions
- 4:31Speaker 2: in jail is weakness. And you got to a point
- 4:35Speaker 2: in that rehab, which was I guess court ordered where
- 4:39Speaker 2: the floodgates opened.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Tell us about that.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Well, I didn't know anything about emotions, So I didn't
- 4:47Speaker 5: know anything about a deeper level of my soul other
- 4:51Speaker 5: than survival because I was living in environments where that
- 4:59Speaker 5: was required. And I didn't understand that because I've been
- 5:03Speaker 5: living in those environments for so long. But I suppose
- 5:07Speaker 5: you could compare it like a war zone. But I
- 5:11Speaker 5: was a soldier that didn't sign up for it. I
- 5:15Speaker 5: was born into it. My parents, the people that I
- 5:20Speaker 5: had been associated with.
- 5:23Speaker 1: All my life.
- 5:24Speaker 5: It was just normal for me. It was normal for
- 5:29Speaker 5: me to not give a fuck about what other people thought.
- 5:35Speaker 5: It was normal for me to take anything that I
- 5:39Speaker 5: wanted off anybody at any time. It was normal for
- 5:45Speaker 5: me to have no regard whatsoever for anybody else, to
- 5:51Speaker 5: be violent.
- 5:52Speaker 1: To be aggressive.
- 5:55Speaker 5: This survival was what I was born into. As far
- 6:01Speaker 5: as emotions were concerned, I didn't know an emotion. The
- 6:06Speaker 5: only thing I knew about emotions was I was either
- 6:11Speaker 5: angry or happy. I didn't know anything in between. I
- 6:15Speaker 5: can remember being in a group of rehab early in
- 6:19Speaker 5: my recovery. The facilitator said to me, Dean, do you
- 6:23Speaker 5: get angry? I said no, because I wasn't going to
- 6:28Speaker 5: tell him how I felt. And he said, do you
- 6:32Speaker 5: know anger is okay? I said, what do you mean?
- 6:37Speaker 5: He said, everyone gets angry, but it's how you deal
- 6:41Speaker 5: with it that makes the difference. And I thought, you know,
- 6:45Speaker 5: I bashed everybody when I got angry. I attacked when
- 6:48Speaker 5: I got angry. That was the first time that I
- 6:51Speaker 5: heard of an emotion that I had that was put
- 6:56Speaker 5: in a way where the end result of it could
- 7:00Speaker 5: be handled in.
- 7:01Speaker 1: A way where it didn't hurt.
- 7:03Speaker 5: Other people or it was a safe way to acknowledge anger.
- 7:08Speaker 5: That was only one emotion that I didn't know about
- 7:11Speaker 5: that I needed desperately to learn how to manage because
- 7:17Speaker 5: I was so unemotionally aware. I was an a literate emotionally.
- 7:22Speaker 5: I look back on that lifestyle and that's what you
- 7:25Speaker 5: have in these environments, like these people that go in
- 7:29Speaker 5: and out of these prison worlds psychologically, and I know
- 7:33Speaker 5: this because I've lived it, they're all completely scarred. And
- 7:39Speaker 5: it's great that we glorify their behavior and it's out
- 7:43Speaker 5: of this world and normal people don't understand the psychological.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Side of it.
- 7:50Speaker 5: But you're glorifying most of these people who are psychologically
- 7:55Speaker 5: scarred in a way.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Where they're a train wreck.
- 7:59Speaker 5: They're drug addicts, they've got no concern for societies. A
- 8:05Speaker 5: lot of them lack empathy and compassion, absolutely self centered, dangerous.
- 8:12Speaker 5: You know, unemotional people live in prison, and that's why
- 8:17Speaker 5: they've got to go to prison, because society needs to
- 8:20Speaker 5: be safeguarded from people like this.
- 8:23Speaker 4: And you were cold and hard, you bottled all your
- 8:27Speaker 4: emotions up.
- 8:27Speaker 2: But when it went Jesus Christ, it was it an
- 8:30Speaker 2: absolute like opening the floodgates. It just didn't stop. What happened, Well,
- 8:34Speaker 2: it was.
- 8:34Speaker 5: A nightmare, mate, because I had built up unconsciously so
- 8:40Speaker 5: much emotion within me that I couldn't deal with it.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Like the only way I could deal with feelings and
- 8:47Speaker 5: emotions was to take drugs or to blame everybody else
- 8:54Speaker 5: for those feelings and emotions or be aggressive towards other people.
- 8:59Speaker 5: So when I was in that rehab, they had cardinal rules.
- 9:05Speaker 5: One of those cardinal rules was no violence or no
- 9:10Speaker 5: threats of violence. Now I had to maintain that because
- 9:14Speaker 5: I wanted to knock off their car.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You know, I had a plan, and you.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Know I was extremely manipulative, cunning, shifty, So that plan
- 9:27Speaker 5: had to come into a reality.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So I had to buy my time.
- 9:31Speaker 5: But every single day the program, it was based on
- 9:34Speaker 5: their called therapeutic communities, and one part of these programs
- 9:40Speaker 5: is that the residents confront each other every day on
- 9:44Speaker 5: their behaviors.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Each residence sees.
- 9:48Speaker 5: Within them and they call them confrontations. And this is
- 9:52Speaker 5: only one part of the program. But these confrontations start
- 9:57Speaker 5: from six point thirty in the morning when your eyes
- 10:00Speaker 5: light up, and they don't stop till eleven thirty that night,
- 10:05Speaker 5: seven days a week. So it's like everybody's attacking each
- 10:09Speaker 5: other interactively.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And they're all heroin addicts.
- 10:13Speaker 5: And like drug addicts, So you're going to imagine the
- 10:16Speaker 5: drama going on in there. And I don't like each other.
- 10:20Speaker 5: They're unhappy with each other. You know, there's so much
- 10:23Speaker 5: drama over petty things. They're you know, they're coping mechanisms
- 10:28Speaker 5: are really immature, like childish.
- 10:31Speaker 1: So I had all this emotion bottled.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Up within me living in this environment where I'm suppressing
- 10:40Speaker 5: it all because I'm not bashing anybody. I haven't got drugs,
- 10:45Speaker 5: i haven't got my normal coping mechanisms that I use
- 10:51Speaker 5: in prison or on the street. I'm like a pressure
- 10:54Speaker 5: cooker and I'm not the lone ranger there.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You know, all these people are like that. They're all
- 11:00Speaker 1: like me.
- 11:00Speaker 5: They're all immature emotionally. The coke and this is what
- 11:05Speaker 5: the program is trying to teach us.
- 11:09Speaker 1: We've got to handle this. We've got to manage ourselves.
- 11:12Speaker 5: We've got to deal with stuff not by physical interactions.
- 11:17Speaker 5: We've got to deal with stuff not by being disrespectful
- 11:20Speaker 5: to one another, listening to one other, respecting other people. Yeah,
- 11:25Speaker 5: one day, I'm working on this work site. They had
- 11:30Speaker 5: a guy in there who was a resident. They call
- 11:32Speaker 5: him the Ramrod, and he used to come around and
- 11:38Speaker 5: give notes from start. But these notes were designed to
- 11:43Speaker 5: bring up reactions in people, and that's what the whole
- 11:46Speaker 5: program was about, you know, like to bring up emotions
- 11:51Speaker 5: and feelings in people, to teach people to manage it
- 11:54Speaker 5: instead of not being able to handle yourself like normal
- 11:59Speaker 5: people when they have struggles or tough times, or when
- 12:03Speaker 5: they've got pressure or they're going problems. And I get
- 12:07Speaker 5: this note from this Ramrod, and I had many people
- 12:13Speaker 5: confront me on things like this over the three or
- 12:16Speaker 5: four months I was there about you know, I was angry, intimidating, threatening,
- 12:22Speaker 5: disrespectful to others. And he gave me the dail and
- 12:28Speaker 5: he said, where do you get off hurting other people
- 12:30Speaker 5: who are not as strong as you, you know, like
- 12:34Speaker 5: intimidating people and threatening people.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And I just went off my fucking head.
- 12:40Speaker 5: I was working on this work site. We were putting
- 12:43Speaker 5: in water pipes. There was pick handles there, there was
- 12:47Speaker 5: shovels there, there was all these other instruments they were
- 12:52Speaker 5: using to bolt the pipes together. And I just went
- 12:56Speaker 5: fucking intimidating people, fucking threatening people. I'll show your fucking intimidation.
- 13:02Speaker 5: I'll show your fucking threats. And that was it. I
- 13:06Speaker 5: just went ballistic. I remember there was a big oak
- 13:10Speaker 5: tree there and I looked at the oak tree and
- 13:14Speaker 5: I just raced over to and I started head button
- 13:17Speaker 5: it with everything that I had him.
- 13:19Speaker 1: He just head button and head button it.
- 13:22Speaker 5: And then I turned to the residents on the work
- 13:26Speaker 5: side and everyone just fucking scarp it. The facilitator looking
- 13:32Speaker 5: after us all, he just said to him, fucking run
- 13:34Speaker 5: get out of here.
- 13:36Speaker 6: Right.
- 13:37Speaker 5: It was on a farm and there was cows next
- 13:40Speaker 5: door with their heads over the fence, you know, eating grass,
- 13:44Speaker 5: and I went for the fucking cows and.
- 13:47Speaker 1: They shit themselves and the bulls.
- 13:49Speaker 5: And they fucking run away, and I jumped the fence
- 13:51Speaker 5: and tried to chase them. And the poor old farmer
- 13:55Speaker 5: next stor he's driving around in hes toyota and I
- 13:58Speaker 5: see him and I gave for him in the car
- 14:01Speaker 5: and he just tries to run me over and I
- 14:04Speaker 5: run into him to take the hit of the car
- 14:06Speaker 5: and he spins the car just away from me, and
- 14:10Speaker 5: I chase him and he fucks off, and I jumped
- 14:14Speaker 5: back over the fence and I'm back into this tree,
- 14:17Speaker 5: punching it with everything I got.
- 14:20Speaker 1: And I'm punching it and I'm punching it.
- 14:22Speaker 5: I'm punching it, and these words started coming out of
- 14:26Speaker 5: my mouth, you know, like I'm sick to death from
- 14:29Speaker 5: being controlled.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I'm sick to death of it.
- 14:32Speaker 5: I'm sick to death for institutions. I'm sick to death
- 14:36Speaker 5: for places like this. I'm sick to death of job.
- 14:39Speaker 5: And I just kept punching the tree and punching the
- 14:41Speaker 5: tree and punching the tree, and all the birds started
- 14:44Speaker 5: flying out in.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Trees, you know.
- 14:46Speaker 5: And after about ten minutes of this, like my hands
- 14:50Speaker 5: were completely bloody. I was absolutely fucking exhausted, and I
- 14:55Speaker 5: fell on my knees and I just started crying.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I couldn't stop. And I cried and I cried and
- 15:04Speaker 1: I cried.
- 15:05Speaker 5: And the director of the rehab who become a very dear,
- 15:12Speaker 5: close friend of mine and I still love her today.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Her name was Jenny Klassen. And you know, this was
- 15:19Speaker 5: thirty five years ago, so I've lost, you know, connections
- 15:23Speaker 5: with a lot of people. I still would have loved
- 15:26Speaker 5: to have had her today as a friend.
- 15:29Speaker 1: She just stood there next to me.
- 15:33Speaker 5: She just stood there, solid, she didn't move, She was
- 15:37Speaker 5: of no concern of what had took place, and she
- 15:44Speaker 5: was just silent, you know, and then she just said,
- 15:49Speaker 5: you know, like it's still for long, you know, because
- 15:56Speaker 5: there was that moment bait that's about and she.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Just said it's okay.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Do you know it's okay? I couldn't. I was hyper ventilating.
- 16:14Speaker 5: I had no tears coming out of my eyes. That's
- 16:17Speaker 5: how long I was crying for. I remember laying on
- 16:23Speaker 5: the grass and I couldn't talk. I wanted to say thanks,
- 16:31Speaker 5: but I couldn't do it. So she stayed with me,
- 16:36Speaker 5: and then he said, what do you want to do?
- 16:41Speaker 1: I said, I'm.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Tired in voice it like not in those words, but
- 16:46Speaker 5: she got the gift of it. She said, come, I'm
- 16:48Speaker 5: go and have a sleep, you know. So I went
- 16:55Speaker 5: and laid down and cleaned myself up in the shower somewhat,
- 17:01Speaker 5: and then I went to sleep and I slept for
- 17:07Speaker 5: about a day and a half. And I remember when
- 17:11Speaker 5: I woke up, I never felt so light on my
- 17:16Speaker 5: feet in my life or as far back as I
- 17:20Speaker 5: could remember.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And I just felt free.
- 17:23Speaker 5: I felt no pressure, I felt no resistance. I felt
- 17:28Speaker 5: like this, I'm comfortable, you know, And I never felt that.
- 17:32Speaker 5: And what happened being in that really vulnerable state after that,
- 17:38Speaker 5: because I didn't know I'm feeling vulnerable, was like, fuck me, Dad,
- 17:41Speaker 5: look at the life I lived. So I had one
- 17:46Speaker 5: of my peers in my peer group. They had four
- 17:50Speaker 5: levels there and I was in level two and one
- 17:53Speaker 5: of my peers from level two was there and his
- 17:56Speaker 5: name was Quentin. He said, how are you going? And
- 18:00Speaker 5: he said, come here, and he gave me a hug
- 18:05Speaker 5: and he said how are you going?
- 18:07Speaker 1: I said, I feel good.
- 18:12Speaker 5: And he said, welcome the vulnerability. I said, if this
- 18:18Speaker 5: is vulnerability, I'm never going to leave it.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Amazing Because you'd grown up on the streets of Balmain
- 18:26Speaker 2: Piedmont in Sydney, which I don't know what it is
- 18:29Speaker 2: about that Eric, particularly Balmain, but it produced more good
- 18:32Speaker 2: crooks than any other part of Sydney. What was your
- 18:35Speaker 2: life growing up that hardened you so much and led
- 18:39Speaker 2: you in this direction.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Well, I didn't think I was hardened because I grew
- 18:44Speaker 5: up around crooks. I grew up around really hard men,
- 18:49Speaker 5: tough men, men that could fight. As you know, there's
- 18:53Speaker 5: a pub on every corner in Balmain. There's not a
- 18:57Speaker 5: night that would go by that there wasn't a stink
- 19:00Speaker 5: somewhere on the street after the doors were closed, or
- 19:05Speaker 5: it are wrapped in the pub with somebody, or they'd
- 19:07Speaker 5: be going over to the park and having a stink
- 19:09Speaker 5: and having a knuckle, or somebody would be going somebody
- 19:13Speaker 5: with a weapon, or an attack would come. You know,
- 19:17Speaker 5: Like I'm not saying every single night, yes you could
- 19:20Speaker 5: go out. Normal people. I'm sure used to go out
- 19:24Speaker 5: those pubs in that era. But I've seen a lot
- 19:27Speaker 5: of violence in pubs. But I also seen a lot
- 19:30Speaker 5: of violence in the streets. I also seen a lot
- 19:34Speaker 5: of violence in homes. So as far as being hardens concerned,
- 19:40Speaker 5: I didn't think I was hardened.
- 19:42Speaker 1: That's who I was.
- 19:44Speaker 5: I didn't know anything deeper cognitively within my soul. And
- 19:48Speaker 5: I think a lot of people are like that.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I think we.
- 19:51Speaker 5: All start out as children and we grow up, and
- 19:57Speaker 5: it doesn't matter if you come from baur main or
- 19:59Speaker 5: hard areas. We're not emotionally intelligent until we start questioning things,
- 20:05Speaker 5: until life presents struggles for us, until we go through
- 20:10Speaker 5: tough times, until we get challenged in say a relationships
- 20:15Speaker 5: or a situation might arise that might take you somewhere
- 20:19Speaker 5: where you go, fuck and what's happened here? Like, things
- 20:24Speaker 5: become really challenging, and it's in those moments that you
- 20:30Speaker 5: either hopefully see what you're experiencing on a deeper level,
- 20:36Speaker 5: so you can capture it, or you keep repeating a
- 20:41Speaker 5: lot of struggle until maybe one day you start looking
- 20:48Speaker 5: within instead of outside of yourself all the time for
- 20:52Speaker 5: your answers. And I think that's what happened to me.
- 20:55Speaker 5: That experience allowed me to look in, and when I
- 21:01Speaker 5: looked in instead of looking out as everybody else, was
- 21:05Speaker 5: the blame to my emotional state, circumstances that happened outside
- 21:11Speaker 5: of myself was the cause of the consequences I was living.
- 21:16Speaker 2: As most of the listeners know, my dad was a psychiatrist,
- 21:20Speaker 2: and I grew up with him telling me that you've
- 21:23Speaker 2: got to learn to self soothe. You've got to be
- 21:27Speaker 2: able to look inside yourself and regulate, and I guess
- 21:31Speaker 2: learn to like yourself. What I've seen of your story,
- 21:35Speaker 2: you didn't like yourself very much. You were a redhead
- 21:39Speaker 2: Haji kid. You thought you're ugly, probably didn't mix that well.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I think you had problems at home. You weren't given
- 21:48Speaker 2: many good examples. I've had to build your own self
- 21:52Speaker 2: esteem and do that self soothing one.
- 21:56Speaker 5: But there was a lot of people back in the
- 22:00Speaker 5: day very similar to me. That we're in the same boat.
- 22:04Speaker 5: I don't think, or maybe I'm just being naive now.
- 22:09Speaker 5: I don't think there was a lot of people, especially
- 22:12Speaker 5: parents back in those days and prior to that, back.
- 22:16Speaker 1: In the seventies, sixties, fifties, forties.
- 22:19Speaker 5: That had the ability to cognitively manage their offsprings in
- 22:25Speaker 5: giving them insight to giving them better self esteem. Regardless
- 22:29Speaker 5: of why I didn't get it, I think that was
- 22:32Speaker 5: the general overhaul of how people parented back in the day.
- 22:38Speaker 5: They parented in a way where children were seen and
- 22:43Speaker 5: not heard. Get on with it, don't be a bitch,
- 22:48Speaker 5: you know, Harden the fuck up?
- 22:50Speaker 1: What are you a girl?
- 22:52Speaker 5: And I'm sure you know that stuff. Well you would
- 22:55Speaker 5: know that stuff, Adam, you know.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:58Speaker 2: And a lot of boys had problems with their fathers.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And I think your father took this slip it to
- 23:05Speaker 2: you pretty regularly.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Well, he did, but I wouldn't say regularly. He did
- 23:12Speaker 5: have a crack on me a few times. But he
- 23:16Speaker 5: was very intimidating. My mother used to say his bark
- 23:23Speaker 5: is worse than his bite, but that bark had a
- 23:28Speaker 5: very big impact on me as a child. He's alcoholism,
- 23:33Speaker 5: he's ranting, he's raving. He was a big man, six'
- 23:38Speaker 5: six and the dialogue that used to come out of
- 23:41Speaker 5: his mouth like every word was your fucking, Dog you
- 23:44Speaker 5: fucking can't fuck these fucking Mother you, know every word
- 23:49Speaker 5: was F c and you, know monkey, see monkey. Do
- 23:54Speaker 5: but in saying, That i've got to pull back on
- 23:56Speaker 5: that a little bit because my brother he didn't turn
- 24:00Speaker 5: out with that filthy mouth LIKE i.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Had but he did turn out with addiction.
- 24:06Speaker 5: Problems and if you look at my whole, family indirectly
- 24:12Speaker 5: the consequences of being parented under my, parents there was
- 24:19Speaker 5: a lot of addictions and a lot of, trauma and
- 24:23Speaker 5: every one of the siblings ended up in struggle. Street you,
- 24:28Speaker 5: KNOW i mean little, sister the one older than, me
- 24:32Speaker 5: she was pregnant at thirteen or. Fourteen the sister above,
- 24:37Speaker 5: that she had terrible self image, problems, overeating ended up
- 24:43Speaker 5: taking massive amounts of, pills housing, estates poor social economic
- 24:52Speaker 5: situations where she couldn't develop herself in a way where
- 24:57Speaker 5: she found stability and long term work or gold or
- 25:01Speaker 5: have orientation of.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Doing things in life and having.
- 25:06Speaker 5: Purpose and she struggled a lot and got into very
- 25:12Speaker 5: abusive relationships with other. Alcoholics and you look at my,
- 25:15Speaker 5: brother he became a heroin. Addict but my brother was
- 25:19Speaker 5: probably the only one out of the three of us
- 25:24Speaker 5: that showed some kind of hope because he used to.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Work he used to go away from the.
- 25:32Speaker 5: Family he used to go and work down At Charlotte's,
- 25:35Speaker 5: past down at The. Snow he used to work there
- 25:39Speaker 5: in the, winter and then he'd be up on the
- 25:41Speaker 5: coast in the, summer you, know up AT. Nusa and
- 25:44Speaker 5: that theme was pretty common back then for you, know
- 25:48Speaker 5: the young. Fellas you, know as you Know, adam you'd
- 25:50Speaker 5: know about. That they used to do a lot of traveling,
- 25:52Speaker 5: around the young guys and getting jobs in the. Restaurants
- 25:56Speaker 5: but he was pretty much the only one that showed
- 26:00Speaker 5: some kind of normality out of that. Family too make
- 26:05Speaker 5: something of himself and makes something better than what he.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Got brought up.
- 26:11Speaker 5: With but he still had a heroin, addiction you, know
- 26:14Speaker 5: so psychologically he was still struggling a.
- 26:18Speaker 4: Lot.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Right, yeah my dad decided That i'd gone to a
- 26:22Speaker 2: private school In sydney at all the, advantages AND i
- 26:24Speaker 2: was a smart ass, kid.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Not humble at. All ilways had no.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Direction so he, said, Right you're going off to The
- 26:32Speaker 2: Northern terrestiary to work in the mine and go you,
- 26:35Speaker 2: know AND i SUDDENLY i was AMONGST i was amongst
- 26:37Speaker 2: men for the first, time hard, men men who were
- 26:40Speaker 2: there under aliases or running away from the, law or
- 26:44Speaker 2: all kinds of. Situations and it was the you, know
- 26:47Speaker 2: it was a very hard, thing AND i cursed my
- 26:49Speaker 2: dad WHEN i was. There BUT i looked back at
- 26:51Speaker 2: those things AND i thought it was good for. Me
- 26:54Speaker 2: but you ended up on the streets in your home
- 26:57Speaker 2: area there and you fell to. Crime what sort of
- 27:00Speaker 2: what was what was your first forays into?
- 27:01Speaker 5: Crime, well BECAUSE i was brought up around, crime it
- 27:06Speaker 5: was pretty normal for me to go down that, road you,
- 27:12Speaker 5: know knocking off, kids push, bikes stealing out of, shops stealing,
- 27:18Speaker 5: cars stealing.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Motorbikes these THINGS i enjoyed to.
- 27:24Speaker 5: Do LIKE i enjoyed driving, CARS i enjoyed.
- 27:28Speaker 1: MOTORBIKES i enjoyed.
- 27:31Speaker 5: Money AND i had no comprehension of how other people
- 27:36Speaker 5: felt about. THAT i was brought up to have no
- 27:39Speaker 5: empathy for other people or no compassion. Whatsoever so as
- 27:45Speaker 5: far as crime is, CONCERNED i just did anything THAT
- 27:48Speaker 5: i wanted and took anything THAT i. Wanted and that's
- 27:53Speaker 5: HOW i survived to.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Take us through year rapt because you've been in jails
- 27:58Speaker 2: in three, States, Bogo raid In, QUEENSLAND i Think Long
- 28:01Speaker 2: bay or Silver water In, sydney and Then pintridge and In.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Melbourne what was your progression through the ranks of.
- 28:08Speaker 5: Crime, well BECAUSE i had done so much of, it
- 28:15Speaker 5: my progression, was, well If i'm gonna live like, THIS
- 28:21Speaker 5: i might as well attempt to be the. Best AND
- 28:24Speaker 5: i used to look at crims in there that had,
- 28:27Speaker 5: respect you, know like crims that were respected in the
- 28:32Speaker 5: system where and they were good, fighters they were, violent
- 28:37Speaker 5: they were, aggressive people looked up to. Them they got
- 28:41Speaker 5: pretty much anything they want because that kind of respect
- 28:45Speaker 5: worked in.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Prison SO i aspired to.
- 28:49Speaker 5: That my progression through the prison world was to have,
- 28:53Speaker 5: respect you, know to show people THAT i had dash
- 28:59Speaker 5: That i'll fight, You i'll go, YA i don't care
- 29:03Speaker 5: who you, are what crime you've, DONE i have no
- 29:07Speaker 5: fear of.
- 29:07Speaker 1: You and, yeah that.
- 29:10Speaker 5: HAPPENED i learned in rehab THAT i was just pushing
- 29:16Speaker 5: normal people away from, me you, know because of that
- 29:19Speaker 5: person i'd. Become that was my progression in the prison
- 29:23Speaker 5: world as far as, progression to be. Somebody BUT i
- 29:28Speaker 5: learned also that that be under somebody like that that
- 29:34Speaker 5: only worked in the prison. World that didn't work in.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Society normal people were very threatened by. It and they
- 29:45Speaker 5: may appear to engage and they may appear to have
- 29:52Speaker 5: relationships with people like, that but they can't get close
- 29:58Speaker 5: to a person like, That nor can a person who
- 30:02Speaker 5: can't distinguish a prison lifestyle or a prison attitude or
- 30:07Speaker 5: A recipi as offender who spent a long time in.
- 30:10Speaker 5: Prison i'm not saying, everybody But i'd say a big
- 30:14Speaker 5: majority of them can't see why they struggle in relationships
- 30:19Speaker 5: outside because of.
- 30:20Speaker 2: That that's, right AND i think a lot of, prisoners
- 30:23Speaker 2: particularly those who've been into, heroin they used the drug
- 30:28Speaker 2: as a way of finding consolation.
- 30:31Speaker 4: And comfort and a bit of joy Even.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Well it's interesting because on that, POINT i didn't think
- 30:40Speaker 5: THAT i used heroin because of. THAT i THOUGHT i
- 30:45Speaker 5: took drugs BECAUSE i liked. THEM i was completely. WRONG
- 30:51Speaker 5: i took drugs for the reason you just mentioned full.
- 30:54Speaker 5: STYLE i was so broken, emotionally my nervous system was
- 31:00Speaker 5: so fucked from years and years and years and years
- 31:05Speaker 5: and years of. Trauma that relieved, me that gave me.
- 31:11Speaker 5: Peace WHEN i stuck a needle in my arm AND
- 31:15Speaker 5: i felt heroin opium going through my. System it was, like,
- 31:20Speaker 5: oh you hear heroin addicts talk that it's better than an,
- 31:26Speaker 5: orgasm that, is it's the best, thing and it. Is
- 31:31Speaker 5: but it's only like that because of the pain the
- 31:34Speaker 5: people that are. In if those people weren't in so much,
- 31:38Speaker 5: pain that relief wouldn't work on. Them SO i realized
- 31:44Speaker 5: because of, THAT i had a lot of work to
- 31:46Speaker 5: do on this, pain AND i had to explore it
- 31:50Speaker 5: because IF i didn't start making the effort to look at,
- 31:54Speaker 5: myself to go and see, counselors to go and see
- 31:58Speaker 5: psychologists to talk about my problems and continue on after,
- 32:03Speaker 5: REHAB i don't HALF i would have got as.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Far AS i did in, life you.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Know, Yeah and you're an absolute miracle in my, opinion,
- 32:12Speaker 2: because AS i said at the, BEGINNING i knew a
- 32:15Speaker 2: lot of people who had got off, heroin but it
- 32:19Speaker 2: left scars on, them it left them depend upon. Others
- 32:23Speaker 2: very few of them managed to make a. Success and,
- 32:26Speaker 2: you against the, odds once you finish, rehab you actually
- 32:32Speaker 2: have made a. Life for you say you made a.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Fortune you, KNOW i think you're the. Richest ex Junkie
- 32:37Speaker 2: i've ever heard.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Of how did you do?
- 32:39Speaker 5: That i'll take that as a. Wrap, WELL i did
- 32:45Speaker 5: it through. DISCIPLINE i did it through work and. HARD
- 32:49Speaker 5: i did it through a. PLAN i did it through
- 32:53Speaker 5: having a vision of completing one task at a, time
- 32:58Speaker 5: and it. WORKED i KNEW i had to get a,
- 33:02Speaker 5: job AND i KNEW i had to get a credit.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Rate AND i knew THAT i had to save.
- 33:12Speaker 5: Money AND i knew WHEN i got money THAT i
- 33:17Speaker 5: had to use that money as soon AS i got
- 33:21Speaker 5: that cash or equity and buy my first home and
- 33:25Speaker 5: use the money if there was a shortfam THAT i
- 33:29Speaker 5: had Because i'm working to pay interest. Repayments BECAUSE i
- 33:33Speaker 5: knew through hanging with, PEOPLE i put myself around highly
- 33:38Speaker 5: intelligent people who were very highly adverse in the property
- 33:44Speaker 5: industry and the finance. INDUSTRY i intentionally done, it AND
- 33:50Speaker 5: i would suck them and ask them questions about how
- 33:54Speaker 5: does property, work what's good, property what's bad? Property what
- 33:59Speaker 5: do you look for making decisions.
- 34:03Speaker 1: To pick right? Property where are? They what are?
- 34:07Speaker 5: Indicators and they would tell me about, markets and they
- 34:10Speaker 5: would tell me about the worst properties in the best,
- 34:13Speaker 5: streets and they would tell me about, position, position, position
- 34:18Speaker 5: and they would tell me about, areas and they would
- 34:20Speaker 5: tell me about, equity and they'd tell me about how
- 34:23Speaker 5: they used equity and how they capitalized on. It and
- 34:27Speaker 5: So i've learned and all the, time you, Know i'm.
- 34:31Speaker 5: Learning and that's WHAT i did my life after, rehab
- 34:35Speaker 5: after learning about myself so much in, rehab WHO i
- 34:40Speaker 5: was and How i'd become the Person i'd, become and
- 34:44Speaker 5: HOW i got out of it through exactly the same
- 34:48Speaker 5: principle That i'm talking to, about going deep within my
- 34:51Speaker 5: soul and asking questions about where does this anger come,
- 34:55Speaker 5: From where does this hating myself come? From where does
- 35:00Speaker 5: this low self esteem come? FROM i could go on and,
- 35:04Speaker 5: on BECAUSE i had a gold miner stuff in there
- 35:08Speaker 5: to look, at you, know about so called shortcomings or
- 35:12Speaker 5: things THAT i could improve personally about.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Myself and you applied the same sort of tenacity in
- 35:19Speaker 2: drive that you'd applied to crime and taking drugs to
- 35:24Speaker 2: making a. Fortune AND i believe you went into telemarketing as.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Well and you've you've been into, stocks and you've been
- 35:30Speaker 2: into all kinds of, things and you've not fallen foul
- 35:33Speaker 2: of the law ever.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Since, Well i've had my moments with the a triple C.
- 35:42Speaker 4: Oh, okay what? Happened oh, well.
- 35:46Speaker 5: They come at me in two thousand and five for
- 35:51Speaker 5: allegedly under The Trade practice at.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Misleading and deceptive behavior and.
- 35:56Speaker 5: Telemarketing BUT i was doing everything. Legally by, LAW i
- 36:03Speaker 5: was allowed to do WHAT i was. Doing i've realized
- 36:06Speaker 5: THAT i found an angle in trading and by law
- 36:11Speaker 5: there was nothing to say THAT i couldn't do. It
- 36:14Speaker 5: and they actually had to change the law and State
- 36:16Speaker 5: parliament In New South wales to close the. Loophole they
- 36:21Speaker 5: had a crack at me in The Federal, COURT i,
- 36:24Speaker 5: See and what were your marketing?
- 36:26Speaker 1: Advertising that would.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Have been section fifty two of The Trade Practices. Act
- 36:31Speaker 2: what did they? Say you were.
- 36:32Speaker 5: Doing, well misleading and deceiving people in my approach selling advertising.
- 36:37Speaker 4: Tool so you got through that, break which is?
- 36:39Speaker 5: Good and when do you SAY i got through that?
- 36:42Speaker 5: Break it cost me about two million.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Dollars, Okay, well you're in a different kind of blood
- 36:48Speaker 2: sport at that end of, town and it does cost
- 36:51Speaker 2: a lot of, money but the stakes are much. Higher,
- 36:54Speaker 2: yeah but these days you're pretty much. Untouchable you've a master.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Fortune you're living In, CAMBODIA i believe or moving Around.
- 37:00Speaker 1: ASIA i just travel around the.
- 37:02Speaker 2: World, yeah and you found, Love, dean because one of
- 37:06Speaker 2: the things that crooks really struggle with is forming. Relationships
- 37:10Speaker 2: they look at love, suspiciously they look at people around them,
- 37:13Speaker 2: suspiciously and it's often very difficult for them to maintain
- 37:17Speaker 2: long term relationships that aren't related to crime or.
- 37:20Speaker 4: Drugs have you gone with?
- 37:21Speaker 1: That, yeah train, wreck you're, Right i'm.
- 37:26Speaker 5: Hopeless i'm still so emotionally scarred from that, experience SO
- 37:30Speaker 5: i don't Think i'll ever get over. It i'm sixty one,
- 37:34Speaker 5: Now i'm still very untrustworthy AND i struggle to get
- 37:39Speaker 5: intimate without getting petrified, still even Though i've done so much.
- 37:45Speaker 5: Change but you're one hundred percent right at. Them i'm
- 37:49Speaker 5: a TRAIN i can't do, it And i've never met
- 37:52Speaker 5: anybody that could ever help me with.
- 37:54Speaker 2: That, well you can't be good at, Everything. Dean you're
- 37:58Speaker 2: good at, crime you're good at taking, drugs you're good
- 38:02Speaker 2: at making. Money that's.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Right, yeah that's so.
- 38:06Speaker 5: True, yeah and you know what if that's my achilles, heill,
- 38:11Speaker 5: Mate i'm very happy to have, that you, know to
- 38:14Speaker 5: tell you the, Truth, Like, YEAH i.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Think one of the hardest Things i've discovered talking to
- 38:19Speaker 2: people who've been in this, space is finding something they
- 38:23Speaker 2: can call joy after, drugs after, crime the adrenaline of,
- 38:28Speaker 2: crime the highs of. Drugs do you sometimes hark back
- 38:34Speaker 2: to those days and Think i'm unable to find that.
- 38:38Speaker 5: Joy i've got that in business and making, Money SO
- 38:43Speaker 5: i really just substituted for the business. World you, know
- 38:46Speaker 5: like when you're making millions and millions of dollars and
- 38:52Speaker 5: you have the freedom to.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Buy anything you, want travel anywhere.
- 38:57Speaker 5: In the, world business first, class have any, choice you
- 39:03Speaker 5: want to live.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Anywhere there's a lot of reward in.
- 39:07Speaker 5: That but to actually do, it that's another. Story and
- 39:14Speaker 5: it takes a lot of. Tenacity it takes a lot
- 39:18Speaker 5: of on edge, stuff a lot of, uncertainty a lot of,
- 39:23Speaker 5: doubt a lot.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Of AM i going to pull this? Off How i'm
- 39:28Speaker 1: going to lose?
- 39:29Speaker 5: This so as far as that excitement is, CONCERNED i
- 39:34Speaker 5: get that still all the time in the choices and
- 39:37Speaker 5: the decisions and the ACTIONS i do making, money AND
- 39:41Speaker 5: i love.
- 39:41Speaker 1: IT i love being the PERSON i.
- 39:44Speaker 5: Am as far as business and playing in, IT i
- 39:49Speaker 5: look at it as a. Game i've realized that Because
- 39:52Speaker 5: i'm so good with psychology and emotional. UNDERSTANDING i know,
- 39:59Speaker 5: fear AND i know, sabotage AND i know worry and,
- 40:05Speaker 5: certainty AND i know risk, taking AND i know, courage
- 40:08Speaker 5: AND i know, determination AND i know how to be
- 40:13Speaker 5: out on a limb and sit there for a long
- 40:16Speaker 5: time where other people just freak out and they can't
- 40:20Speaker 5: handle the uncertainty of it or the, doubt AND i
- 40:24Speaker 5: just thrive on. It and there's great rewards in that,
- 40:27Speaker 5: shit you, know great rewards if you're business, minded or
- 40:32Speaker 5: if you've got the business acumen to back that, up
- 40:37Speaker 5: and over a long period of time of getting a
- 40:39Speaker 5: lot of things, wrong if you're motivated to become successful
- 40:46Speaker 5: in any kind of business livelihood or to be successful
- 40:53Speaker 5: in the business sextor or the business. World that's all in.
- 40:56Speaker 5: There so that's WHERE i get my.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Rocks, off you, know. Good and there's a couple other things.
- 41:05Speaker 2: You want to.
- 41:05Speaker 4: Elaborate.
- 41:06Speaker 5: WELL i like to be close to my loved ones
- 41:11Speaker 5: and have fun with. THEM i get off with me
- 41:15Speaker 5: mates and doing things and having a good time and
- 41:19Speaker 5: going out for dinners and having laughs and go on
- 41:23Speaker 5: places with. Them AND i haven't relationships with. PEOPLE i
- 41:27Speaker 5: find that highly. STIMULATING i like.
- 41:32Speaker 4: People, yeah you've learned to do.
- 41:35Speaker 2: THAT i think one thing in the criminal world and
- 41:37Speaker 2: also in the drug world as, well people do learn
- 41:40Speaker 2: to deal with decisions and dilemmas because their world is
- 41:45Speaker 2: full of. Them and you make the wrong, decision you're
- 41:48Speaker 2: going to pay for. It and often these choices are not.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Clear it's the rock and hard placed. Choices And i'm
- 41:53Speaker 2: sure that's helped you in business to turn that ruthlessness
- 41:58Speaker 2: where you've been in jail and it's.
- 42:00Speaker 4: Get someone before they get.
- 42:01Speaker 2: You it's take decisions fearlessly when you don't know all
- 42:05Speaker 2: the information or the. Outcomes do you think that was
- 42:08Speaker 2: in your personality all? Along and you wonder what you
- 42:11Speaker 2: might have achieved had you not spent decade and a
- 42:14Speaker 2: half as a?
- 42:14Speaker 5: Crook, well WHAT i have achieved irrespectively is still. Phenomenal
- 42:22Speaker 5: that was just a training ground for. It you, Know
- 42:25Speaker 5: i've been at this now SINCE i was twenty. Eight
- 42:29Speaker 5: i've achieved remarkable, Things Like i've had a life many
- 42:36Speaker 5: people dream of. Having i've had a LIFE i still
- 42:41Speaker 5: pinch myself, About like there's not a day that goes
- 42:45Speaker 5: by THAT i still look around me and go have.
- 42:50Speaker 1: A fucking look at. You look where you've, been like
- 42:55Speaker 1: you're In.
- 42:55Speaker 5: Cambodia AND i think it's gratitude To, adam you, know and.
- 43:01Speaker 5: APPRECIATION i remember WHEN i changed in eighty nine AND
- 43:08Speaker 5: i had to go back to court for a hundred
- 43:10Speaker 5: charges after six months out of. REHAB i went back
- 43:14Speaker 5: to court for those charges AND i fronted a judge
- 43:19Speaker 5: Called judge McGuire in the District court In. Brisbane and
- 43:24Speaker 5: before we went into, COURT i went to see my
- 43:27Speaker 5: barrister and we sat there for an hour and a
