Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Angels trade plans, Ken's toughest All-Star picks
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:12Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with my friend Alana Rizzo, and we
- 0:15Speaker 1: are going to take a little bit of a different
- 0:17Speaker 1: tech on this particular show. Not going to talk about
- 0:20Speaker 1: the events going on and the losing streaks and the
- 0:23Speaker 1: winning streaks and all the usual baseball fodder. We're going
- 0:27Speaker 1: to talk about the All Star Game and who should
- 0:29Speaker 1: be in the All Star Game. Alana, so let's have
- 0:32Speaker 1: at it.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Ken, always good to be with you on this Thursday,
- 0:35Speaker 2: and I want everyone to go to the Athletic.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Ken just had a column.
- 0:39Speaker 2: It is free and unlocked for everybody to read about
- 0:42Speaker 2: his picks for the All Star Game and Ken, it's
- 0:45Speaker 2: not always as easy as people think.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It is not, Alana, and I prefaced this column, actually
- 0:51Speaker 1: didn't write it at the start of the column, but
- 0:53Speaker 1: somewhere up high that people generally get outraged over this
- 0:57Speaker 1: kind of thing and they probably should save their v
- 1:00Speaker 1: for things that actually really matter. With the All Star Game,
- 1:04Speaker 1: it's fun to pick the teams, for sure, and it
- 1:06Speaker 1: is difficult.
- 1:07Speaker 4: And the one thing I always.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Remind people too is once players start bailing out, a
- 1:12Speaker 1: lot of the players who get snubbed will be added
- 1:15Speaker 1: to the team.
- 1:15Speaker 4: So no harm, no foul here for the most part.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Ever, But in compiling my teams, Alana, one thing I
- 1:22Speaker 1: noticed it jumped out at me, was how difficult it
- 1:26Speaker 1: was with the National League. How many great players there
- 1:30Speaker 1: are at a number of positions.
- 1:32Speaker 4: And really, as I wrote, I could have.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Chosen my team from four different clubs in the NL Dodgers, Braves,
- 1:39Speaker 1: Phillies and Brewers, four of the top five clubs in
- 1:41Speaker 1: the league. But of course I had to represent every team.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Follow the rules as they are.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Twenty position players, twelve pitchers including three relievers, and that's how.
- 1:51Speaker 4: I went about it. But there were some really tough
- 1:54Speaker 4: decisions for sure.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Let me ask you a question in terms of this,
- 1:58Speaker 2: you mentioned you had to follow ther and one of
- 2:00Speaker 2: the rules, as you also just mentioned, is having to
- 2:02Speaker 2: have a representative from every single team. I'm interested in
- 2:06Speaker 2: your opinion about that. There's a both sides of the
- 2:09Speaker 2: fence on this.
- 2:10Speaker 3: What is your take?
- 2:12Speaker 1: I like it, and I have gone both ways myself
- 2:16Speaker 1: on this over the years. But I remember growing up
- 2:19Speaker 1: as a kid, you want to see your team represented
- 2:21Speaker 1: in the All Star Game. You want to see your
- 2:23Speaker 1: All Star if you only have one represented and announced
- 2:27Speaker 1: on the field on the foul line.
- 2:29Speaker 4: So it's a good rule.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And actually this year I didn't struggle particularly to find
- 2:36Speaker 1: one player from each team. The Rockies, for instance, Hunter
- 2:40Speaker 1: Goodman is an obvious All Star. He second in the
- 2:42Speaker 1: league in home runs with twenty seven and yes, eighteen
- 2:46Speaker 1: of them away from chorus fields, so no problem there.
- 2:50Speaker 4: And then there's the Angels.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Another bad team, but Mike Trouts having a great year.
- 2:54Speaker 1: They have some pitchers doing really well in addition to that.
- 2:58Speaker 1: So it really wasn't tough this year to find one
- 3:02Speaker 1: from every team. But some years, yes, that can be
- 3:05Speaker 1: a challenge.
- 3:06Speaker 2: One thing that you said in terms of your picks
- 3:09Speaker 2: is Kyle Schwarber over show Hey Otani tell us why.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Well, obviously Shohy is going to start at DH. He
- 3:17Speaker 1: is the leading vote getter. That's already been decided. But
- 3:21Speaker 1: if y'all look at the numbers, and we're not talking
- 3:24Speaker 1: about show Hay as a pitcher DH, we're talking about
- 3:26Speaker 1: him strictly as a DH, Schwarber has thirty home runs.
- 3:30Speaker 4: To show hayes eighteen.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Shoreber leads the majors in that department and Schwarber last
- 3:35Speaker 1: night passed Otani in ops as well. So from the
- 3:39Speaker 1: measures you would normally use for Dah, Schwarber is at
- 3:42Speaker 1: least right there with him, if not well beyond. And
- 3:45Speaker 1: that's what or that's why I made the decision I did.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Now again, I know that it's not going to go
- 3:51Speaker 1: that way, and with the game in Philadelphia, it would
- 3:54Speaker 1: be cool if it did go that way.
- 3:56Speaker 4: But show he's the guy.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Show Hey is the guy you had mentioned. And also
- 4:00Speaker 2: that picking the National League was very difficult because of
- 4:04Speaker 2: the parody in terms of teams, of course, and of
- 4:07Speaker 2: very deserving players. But there's two positions in particular that
- 4:10Speaker 2: you had a difficult time doing. National League second base.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Tell us more about that.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Second base is really interesting a lot because in the
- 4:17Speaker 1: American League it was hard to find a backup, and
- 4:21Speaker 1: then in the National League he had all these players
- 4:24Speaker 1: and it's like, what are we doing here? So I
- 4:27Speaker 1: ultimately settled on Luis Arise and Brice Tehrang, two guys
- 4:32Speaker 1: having really good years. Arise resurgent both offensively and defensively.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Trang just a brilliant player, really the backbone of the Brewers.
- 4:40Speaker 1: As I wrote, But here are the players that I snubbed,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and you can see them right there on the graphic.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Ozzi Albi's who is a leading vote getter right now?
- 4:48Speaker 1: Xavier Edwards.
- 4:49Speaker 4: I know a lot of fans might not know much
- 4:51Speaker 4: about him, but he's having.
- 4:52Speaker 1: A great season. Brandon Low has been terrific for the Pirates.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Katel Marte the same for the Diamondbacks and JJ weatherhol
- 5:00Speaker 1: a guy I would love to squeeze on because I
- 5:02Speaker 1: love to see rising stars in the game, but I
- 5:05Speaker 1: just couldn't fit.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Him Ken And same exact question for the National League
- 5:09Speaker 2: outfield Who were your choices and who were the omissions?
- 5:12Speaker 1: All Right, this one was tough too, and this one
- 5:16Speaker 1: could cause some upset people in Philadelphia because I did leave.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Brandon marsh off. Now Brandon marsh is going to make
- 5:22Speaker 4: the team.
- 5:23Speaker 1: He's I believe, the leading vote getter among NL outfielders
- 5:26Speaker 1: going into the final stages of the vote.
- 5:29Speaker 4: So no harm, no foul again.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But the guys I chose were James Wood of course
- 5:35Speaker 1: from the Nationals great season, Pca having an MVP type
- 5:39Speaker 1: season for the Cubs, the major league leader in f war,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and Corbyn Carroll Diamondbacks only representative Jordan Walker, the Cardinals
- 5:48Speaker 1: only representative, Wan Soto, the Mets only representative, and Andy Pahes,
- 5:53Speaker 1: who I initially left off from Marsh but in the
- 5:56Speaker 1: end felt.
- 5:57Speaker 4: I could not do that.
- 5:58Speaker 1: So that is one where there were some really good
- 6:01Speaker 1: players who aren't even on my top six. I'm talking
- 6:05Speaker 1: about Brian Reynolds and Michael Harris the second, and of
- 6:08Speaker 1: course Jackson Churio, who in my mind is maybe the
- 6:12Speaker 1: game's next great superstar. He didn't start a season until
- 6:16Speaker 1: early May because he was hurt with that fractured hand,
- 6:19Speaker 1: but that guy is electric and I would love to
- 6:21Speaker 1: see him in the game.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I don't want to harp on the omissions, but what
- 6:25Speaker 2: are some of the biggest omissions besides the guys that
- 6:28Speaker 2: you've already talked about Ken in terms of second base
- 6:30Speaker 2: in the outfield, anybody else kind of stand out to
- 6:32Speaker 2: you in the NL?
- 6:33Speaker 4: Absolutely, And it's funny a lot.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I just talked about Cheerio and how I left him off,
- 6:37Speaker 1: And another brewer that I left off who I love
- 6:41Speaker 1: and I love his story is Jake Bowers.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Jake Bowers is thirty years old.
- 6:45Speaker 1: He was once one of Tampa Bay's top prospects, but
- 6:48Speaker 1: only this season is he breaking out. The problem is
- 6:52Speaker 1: his primary position's first base, and at first base, I
- 6:56Speaker 1: could not choose him over the guys who are obviously
- 6:59Speaker 1: going to make the team.
- 7:00Speaker 4: So that was the problem there.
- 7:03Speaker 1: With Bowers, I found it interesting cal Rowley coming off
- 7:06Speaker 1: a sixty home run season is not even someone I consider.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Shy Langeliers and Dyan Dingler will.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Be the catchers for the American League, and even Julio
- 7:16Speaker 1: Rodriguez who's having an okay year but didn't make my
- 7:20Speaker 1: American League outfield.
- 7:21Speaker 4: So those were some of the big ones.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Now maybe the biggest, at least judging from the comments
- 7:26Speaker 1: section under my column today, is Braxton Ashcraft getting left
- 7:31Speaker 1: off for Paul Skeens. Now, Paul Skeens in his last
- 7:35Speaker 1: nine starts has an ERA of five point three six.
- 7:38Speaker 1: He was one point nine to eight through May twelfth,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and then last nine starts have not been good. Ashcraft
- 7:45Speaker 1: actually has been the better pitcher, but fans will see
- 7:48Speaker 1: that when the player vote comes in, and the player
- 7:51Speaker 1: vote is part of this, I am quite certain Skiens
- 7:53Speaker 1: will be the player's choice and Ashcraft maybe gets on
- 7:58Speaker 1: as an injury replacement.
- 7:59Speaker 4: Again, are going to be a ton.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Of those, and yes, I would agree that based on
- 8:04Speaker 1: pure first half performance, Ashcraft is more deserving. But we're
- 8:08Speaker 1: talking about Skins, a Rookie of the Year, a Cy.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Young Award winner. In my mind, that kind of thing matters.
- 8:15Speaker 1: You want the biggest names, not just the best first
- 8:18Speaker 1: half performers.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, when you think about it though too, just probably
- 8:22Speaker 2: based on name alone, name recognition. Paul Skeins getting in
- 8:25Speaker 2: on that one. All right, this is I'm being facetious
- 8:28Speaker 2: with this next question. But considering how bad the American
- 8:30Speaker 2: League has been, Ken, does the American League even deserve
- 8:33Speaker 2: a full squad?
- 8:36Speaker 4: Yes, they deserve a full squad.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Ali that, and keep in mind two of the best
- 8:40Speaker 1: American League players are out and we'll miss the game.
- 8:42Speaker 4: And I'm talking of course about Aaron Judge and Jose Ramirez.
- 8:46Speaker 1: So that waters it down some. But there are outstanding
- 8:50Speaker 1: players at every position. And even I just mentioned second
- 8:54Speaker 1: base earlier how it was hard to find a backup.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Well, the start is going to be Ernie Clement.
- 8:59Speaker 1: He's the top vote getter. Granted, Jays fans have essentially
- 9:03Speaker 1: stuffed the ballot boxes, but Ernie Clement is the best
- 9:06Speaker 1: hitting second baseman in the American League and a guy
- 9:08Speaker 1: who coming off his postseason certainly someone fans know and
- 9:13Speaker 1: a lot of people really admire. Now going around the field,
- 9:17Speaker 1: there are plenty of great players who will represent the
- 9:21Speaker 1: American League, but that National League pitching staff another area
- 9:24Speaker 1: where I struggled to find just which players to pick.
- 9:29Speaker 1: That's an awesome group. It's miss Rawski, it's Sanchez, etc.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And I would expect that ASH leagu would be favored
- 9:37Speaker 1: to win this game if people actually pay attention to outcomes.
- 9:40Speaker 4: But at the same time, yes.
- 9:42Speaker 1: The American League deserves a team a lot the league
- 9:46Speaker 1: itself this year is just not very good.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with you on that.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Guys, don't forget I know everybody has an opinion when
- 9:53Speaker 2: it comes to All Star selections. Any questions you have
- 9:55Speaker 2: in regards to this, get them in for Grill and Ken,
- 9:58Speaker 2: we're keeping track of everything. Any questions you actually have
- 10:01Speaker 2: for can Rosenthal, get them in because we're going to
- 10:03Speaker 2: do that momentarily. A couple of other questions in regards
- 10:06Speaker 2: to the All Star Game. You believe that every team
- 10:08Speaker 2: should have a representative. What do you feel about the
- 10:11Speaker 2: fact that now they actually get to wear their team
- 10:14Speaker 2: jerseys versus All Star jerseys.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Hallelujah. Oh wow, amen, the All Star jerseys. I get it.
- 10:22Speaker 1: The league is always trying to find new ways to
- 10:24Speaker 1: sell merchandise. That's fine, No one should begrudge them that,
- 10:27Speaker 1: but it took something away. And the idea of having
- 10:31Speaker 1: every team represented is a valid one, in part because
- 10:36Speaker 1: of what I said earlier. Fans want to see their player,
- 10:40Speaker 1: their favorite player from their favorite team, line up for
- 10:42Speaker 1: introductions in their favorite team's uniform and Tyler Kapner, my
- 10:47Speaker 1: colleague at the Athletic, was really big on this how
- 10:50Speaker 1: they needed to go back to the player's uniforms the
- 10:54Speaker 1: team uniforms, and that was a good decision that listen
- 10:58Speaker 1: the league obviously this particular case, this is not the
- 11:01Speaker 1: biggest deal in the world. We all know that, but
- 11:04Speaker 1: they listen to fans who said this is not working
- 11:07Speaker 1: for us. And some of those uniforms that they were
- 11:10Speaker 1: giving to the players were pretty ugly too.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Yeah, last question on this topic, and then we're going
- 11:15Speaker 2: to get to inside dish momentarily. What about the All
- 11:19Speaker 2: Star Game in terms of the outcome mattering for home
- 11:22Speaker 2: field advantage in the postseason, Well, that.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Was a Fox idea and it last and I never
- 11:31Speaker 4: loved it. To me, it's an exhibition.
- 11:34Speaker 1: It should be an exhibition, and when you put a
- 11:37Speaker 1: steak on it, it changes things. Steak stak e not
- 11:40Speaker 1: the eating kind. And I just didn't think it served
- 11:44Speaker 1: the game well. The game is best played as an exhibition. Now,
- 11:49Speaker 1: that's said. One of the reasons why Fox NMLB agreed
- 11:55Speaker 1: upon the every this Time it Matters motif was because
- 12:00Speaker 1: players were bolting.
- 12:02Speaker 4: And leaving the game early, and that was the problem
- 12:04Speaker 4: you run into with exhibitions. Guys just want to.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Get out of there after the fifth inning board their
- 12:08Speaker 1: plot private jets, and then you're left with the reserves
- 12:12Speaker 1: for the rest of the game. That was a problem,
- 12:14Speaker 1: but it seems to me the home run derby potential.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Now we'll keep guys around in a better way and
- 12:20Speaker 1: we'll see how it all plays out. But I have
- 12:22Speaker 1: no problem with it being an exhibition. I prefer it
- 12:24Speaker 1: that way.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Agreed, it is an exhibition. Let's leave it that way.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Okay, guys, we're going to get to a Thursday edition
- 12:29Speaker 2: of Inside Dish right after this.

- 13:56Speaker 2: with an even bigger payout gambling problem called one eight
- 13:59Speaker 2: hundred gambler or one eight hundred my reset. We welcome
- 14:10Speaker 2: you back to fair territory with Ken Rosenthal at his
- 14:12Speaker 2: time now for the Inside Dish on this Thursday, and
- 14:15Speaker 2: after a short sabbatical, John mose Looc, better known with
- 14:19Speaker 2: the Saint Louis Cardinals, is now back in the game
- 14:21Speaker 2: as the interim GM of the Angels. Ken, you were
- 14:24Speaker 2: one on one with him. What more can you tell us?
- 14:27Speaker 1: Well, this article came about from my curiosity after listening
- 14:31Speaker 1: to Mizzaelock in his introductory news conference with the Angels.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I had a lot of questions after hearing his answers
- 14:38Speaker 1: that day. One in particular was you took this job
- 14:41Speaker 1: without meeting Artie Moreno.
- 14:42Speaker 4: I couldn't even conceive of that.
- 14:44Speaker 1: So, because I had questions, I contacted John Mizzalic and said, Hey,
- 14:48Speaker 1: could we do a Q and a kind of thing,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and John Mozelic has always been good about answering questions.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Now fans might not like that he is political in
- 14:57Speaker 1: his answers and savvy and can be elusive, but he
- 15:01Speaker 1: does answer questions, so that's always a positive.
- 15:04Speaker 4: And I had a bunch of questions for him, and
- 15:07Speaker 4: I relied on Sam Blum.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Who's covered with the Angels for years for us, and
- 15:10Speaker 1: Katie Wu who used to cover the Cardinals, to kind
- 15:13Speaker 1: of help me form some thoughts for this interview.
- 15:16Speaker 4: And he did answer a lot.
- 15:18Speaker 1: And the big thing for me, The big question was
- 15:21Speaker 1: and is will he have actual autonomy because that's always
- 15:26Speaker 1: been the question for Angels heads of baseball operations under Moreno.
- 15:31Speaker 1: What's different about Mozzeyloc as opposed to Tony Reagan's and
- 15:35Speaker 1: Jerry Depoto and Billy Eppler and of course Perrymanazien is
- 15:40Speaker 1: he has experience coming into this job. Those guys I
- 15:43Speaker 1: just mentioned did not. Topoto had been an interim for
- 15:46Speaker 1: a couple of months, but.
- 15:47Speaker 4: That was it.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Miszey Looc is a guy with some status in the game.
- 15:51Speaker 1: He was with the Cardinals for quite a long time
- 15:54Speaker 1: at the time he left as president of Baseball Operations
- 15:57Speaker 1: was the second longest tenured head of baseball in the game,
- 16:00Speaker 1: behind only Brian Cashman. So the question then is, Okay,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you hired this guy, are you going to let him
- 16:08Speaker 1: do his job?
- 16:08Speaker 4: Because the question with Moreno has always been or.
- 16:11Speaker 1: The criticism and the suspicion has always been he does
- 16:15Speaker 1: not let his heads of Baseball operations do their jobs.
- 16:18Speaker 1: And Rozelac basically said he has met with Moreno at
- 16:22Speaker 1: this point and he feels that Moreno is going to
- 16:25Speaker 1: rely a lot on him John Mizzlac for his vision
- 16:29Speaker 1: in kind of reversing the course of the franchise. We'll
- 16:33Speaker 1: see it always sounds great at the beginning of Lona.
- 16:36Speaker 1: That's true for players in their introductory news conference, it's true.
- 16:39Speaker 4: For managers, executives. They all sound great.
- 16:41Speaker 1: At the press conference and in the interviews afterward. But
- 16:45Speaker 1: we'll see if indeed mozae Look is allowed to affect
- 16:49Speaker 1: actual change or if this will simply be with the
- 16:52Speaker 1: Angels more of the same.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that'll be the biggest question in the autonomy. Will
- 16:56Speaker 2: John Mozelac be able to have that? In terms of
- 16:59Speaker 2: that with Ardie Murray, some other questions that came up
- 17:01Speaker 2: in your Q and A with mozay Lock. Obviously, everybody
- 17:03Speaker 2: wants to know about Mike Trout having a good season
- 17:06Speaker 2: so far this year, Ken, but it's always like, is
- 17:08Speaker 2: Mike Trout going to get traded? What more can you
- 17:11Speaker 2: tell us about his future there in Anaheim?
- 17:13Speaker 1: All And I've said this on multiple shows, the question
- 17:17Speaker 1: of Mike Trout getting traded essentially would be answered by
- 17:20Speaker 1: Mike Trout because he has a full note trade clause
- 17:23Speaker 1: and he has insisted over the years that he wants
- 17:25Speaker 1: to remain an Angel and win with the Angels. And
- 17:28Speaker 1: Mozaelac told me he has had a brief conversation with Trout.
- 17:31Speaker 1: He wants to have more conversations get Trout's insight on
- 17:35Speaker 1: the franchise. But at the same time, the topic of
- 17:38Speaker 1: a trade never came up, and he does not believe
- 17:40Speaker 1: that it will come up. So again, there are some
- 17:44Speaker 1: Angels who could be traded at the deadline, or who
- 17:46Speaker 1: should be traded at the deadline. That is the bigger
- 17:50Speaker 1: overriding concern here. Will mozey Loock be allowed to do
- 17:54Speaker 1: something that his predecessors were not, and that is to
- 17:57Speaker 1: trade players under team control beyond the season at hand.
- 18:03Speaker 1: So who are we talking about? Jose Siriano Sriana for one,
- 18:07Speaker 1: readdet Meers, Zach Neto, Joe Adell.
- 18:10Speaker 4: All of these guys.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Under club control for at least one more year, Adele one,
- 18:14Speaker 1: the two pitchers two.
- 18:15Speaker 4: And Neto three.
- 18:17Speaker 1: And if the Angels choose they can move some of
- 18:21Speaker 1: these guys and get big returns.
- 18:23Speaker 4: Their farm system is not very good. It is something
- 18:25Speaker 4: they should do.
- 18:26Speaker 1: It is something I believe their fans would embrace a retooling,
- 18:30Speaker 1: if not an outright rebuilding.
- 18:32Speaker 4: But when I asked Mosaic about that, does this team
- 18:35Speaker 4: need to rebuild? His answer was tell him. He said no.
- 18:39Speaker 1: He said, this is a team and a big market,
- 18:41Speaker 1: a team with resources, and they should be able to compete.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Ken, what's the long game here?
- 18:46Speaker 2: Is this a long term deal for John mose Lack
- 18:49Speaker 2: or is this just something that is temporary to kind
- 18:51Speaker 2: of you serve as a consultant and try to make
- 18:54Speaker 2: this a quick fix.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Well, a out of that is how they describe this.
- 18:58Speaker 1: He is a consultant to will serve as the interim GM,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and his contract runs through only December. Now there is
- 19:05Speaker 1: always the possibility that after he hires a GM, which
- 19:09Speaker 1: is one of his tasks here. He will remain in
- 19:12Speaker 1: some capacity. It could be his President of Baseball Operations,
- 19:15Speaker 1: if it's someone that he hires and wants to work with.
- 19:18Speaker 1: It could be in some other capacity that is unknown.
- 19:21Speaker 4: And it's a.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Good question you asked there, what is the long game
- 19:25Speaker 1: because that is something that right now cannot be deciphered.
- 19:29Speaker 4: From what is going on.
- 19:31Speaker 1: We see what they're doing short term and what they
- 19:34Speaker 1: essentially decided. What Moreno and his team president Molly Jolly
- 19:38Speaker 1: decided is that they didn't want Perimannazi and doing another
- 19:41Speaker 1: draft and another trade deadline.
- 19:44Speaker 4: That makes sense. If you don't want that GM.
- 19:47Speaker 1: That head of base operations controlling two of the biggest
- 19:51Speaker 1: events on a baseball team's calendar, then yes, you make
- 19:54Speaker 1: a change and you bring in a guy who has
- 19:58Speaker 1: done this for a very long time.
- 20:00Speaker 4: So I understood what they were doing there.
- 20:02Speaker 1: And Mnasia was in the last year of his contract,
- 20:05Speaker 1: they weren't going to bring him back. But again, what
- 20:08Speaker 1: the long term approach is that remains to be seen.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Why the Angels ken, why this team, I mean, it's
- 20:15Speaker 2: not as if John Moseaylock needs the money, needs the job,
- 20:17Speaker 2: needs the resume padding why Anaheim.
- 20:21Speaker 1: It surprised me too, Alana. Let's face it, he only
- 20:25Speaker 1: stepped down as head of baseball operations with the Cardinals
- 20:27Speaker 1: eight or nine months ago, and he said that was
- 20:31Speaker 1: enough time for him to recharge. And the reason he
- 20:34Speaker 1: came back was because, in his interviews with Molly Jolly,
- 20:38Speaker 1: the team president, he felt, Okay, this is an interesting challenge.
- 20:43Speaker 1: This is something I can embrace, and maybe the short
- 20:45Speaker 1: term aspect of it would be good for him or
- 20:48Speaker 1: appealing to him, simply because he doesn't have to commit
- 20:51Speaker 1: long term. If this is not going well, if Artie
- 20:53Speaker 1: Moreno is not going to change from the perception that
- 20:57Speaker 1: we all have of him, then in this semi or
- 21:00Speaker 1: he's gone and he can pursue another opportunity or not.
- 21:03Speaker 1: So that's why the Angels appeal to him. And let's
- 21:07Speaker 1: face it, the Angels are a sleeping giant. If they
- 21:11Speaker 1: ever get a new owner, I imagine they will be a
- 21:14Speaker 1: very dynamic franchise.
- 21:16Speaker 4: In short order.
- 21:17Speaker 1: The way Moreno has run them, they've not been a
- 21:20Speaker 1: dynamic franchise, even with Otani and Trout on the same team, albeit.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Injured for much of that.
- 21:25Speaker 1: But this is a team that is in a huge market,
- 21:29Speaker 1: in a place where players want to be. Who doesn't
- 21:32Speaker 1: want to be in Orange County, California. It's beautiful.
- 21:35Speaker 4: So ultimately they can fix this thing.
- 21:40Speaker 1: It's just a matter of whether this owner will oversee
- 21:44Speaker 1: such an operation or if it will take a new
- 21:46Speaker 1: owner for it to happen.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I'm sure you guys have a lot of questions about this.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Don't forget get your questions in. We're keeping track of everything.
- 21:54Speaker 2: We're gonna actually have Grill and Ken on Monday, So

- 22:02Speaker 2: that insight. We're going to crown this week's dudes and

- 22:51Speaker 2: particular baseball game that you're really interested in, But if
- 22:54Speaker 2: you were to go to seat geek, what is something
- 22:57Speaker 2: and you cannot say, Bruce Springsteen, okay, what is something
- 23:01Speaker 2: that you'd be very excited to attend?
- 23:04Speaker 4: World's Cup?
- 23:05Speaker 1: And I am watching in between watching baseball, and it
- 23:08Speaker 1: has been absolutely fantastic. And for Americans who don't see
- 23:13Speaker 1: the joy and the beauty of soccer, this has been
- 23:16Speaker 1: quite an eye opening experience.
- 23:18Speaker 4: And I've always loved the game. I played it in
- 23:20Speaker 4: high school.
- 23:21Speaker 1: So absolutely World Cup, but not for like eight thousand
- 23:25Speaker 1: dollars a ticket.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I think you know enough people that maybe you wouldn't
- 23:31Speaker 2: have to, you know, do an eight thousand dollars ticket.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Certainly not for MLB tickets, which you can get on
- 23:38Speaker 2: Sea geek.
- 23:38Speaker 3: All right. Time now for the dude of the week.
- 23:43Speaker 4: I'm the dude, so that's what you call me, all.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Right, Ken, who is your dude of the.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Week, Alana?
- 23:54Speaker 1: I was tempted to go with Dansby Swanson. Twenty six
- 23:57Speaker 1: RBIs in his last ten games. He is certainly a
- 24:00Speaker 1: very strong dude candidate. But how can we ignore what
- 24:05Speaker 1: Junior Camanero is doing with the Tampa Bay Rays. Home
- 24:08Speaker 1: runs in six straight games, nine home runs in his
- 24:12Speaker 1: last eight games. And here's the stat that's the most
- 24:15Speaker 1: home runs in an eight game span by a player
- 24:18Speaker 1: twenty two or younger since at least nineteen hundred. Junior
- 24:22Speaker 1: doesn't turn twenty three until Sunday, I believe.
- 24:25Speaker 4: So what this kid is doing is amazing.
- 24:28Speaker 1: He's going to be in the home Run Derby, and
- 24:30Speaker 1: the Rays right now are looking really good with the
- 24:33Speaker 1: Yankees struggles, and we'll get to that in a minute.
- 24:36Speaker 2: All right, don't forget you can get tickets to the
- 24:38Speaker 2: home Run Derby on to see Junior Camonaro on.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Seat Geek My dude of the week. Two dudes on
- 24:44Speaker 3: each side of the equation.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Here Joshua Caroroda Grouer his first major League baseball head
- 24:50Speaker 2: of course, with the Athletics, a young kid getting his
- 24:52Speaker 2: first big league knock was against the Dodgers Freddie Freeman,
- 24:57Speaker 2: obviously at first base. The active hit leader in Major
- 25:00Speaker 2: League Baseball, Freddy Freeman, of course, over twenty five hundred
- 25:03Speaker 2: total hits so far in his career. What a moment, though,
- 25:06Speaker 2: your first career hit. Two very different ends of the spectrum,
- 25:10Speaker 2: but both of those guys are my dudes of the week.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Congratulations Joshua on your first hit. Okay, time now for
- 25:16Speaker 2: our dork of the week. I'm going to go first
- 25:26Speaker 2: on this. My dork of the week is first base
- 25:29Speaker 2: umpire in the Red Sox game, Nick Lentz, who decided
- 25:33Speaker 2: that he was going to eject Wilson Contreras, who did
- 25:37Speaker 2: not like the check swing call. Wilson Conturis was making
- 25:40Speaker 2: his way back to the dugout. Didn't like the call,
- 25:42Speaker 2: went like this, tapped his helmet. Obviously, you can't challenge
- 25:45Speaker 2: a check swing call. He didn't like the fact that
- 25:48Speaker 2: Wilson Conturis was doing that, and he ejected him. And
- 25:52Speaker 2: that was back to back injections for Wilson Conturists. It
- 25:54Speaker 2: was the first of two in a row, first time
- 25:56Speaker 2: ever a Red Sox has been ejected in back to
- 26:00Speaker 2: back days. But Nick Lentz is my dork of the week,
- 26:02Speaker 2: how about you.
- 26:04Speaker 1: My dork of the week is actually an entire team,
- 26:07Speaker 1: and it would be the New York Yankees, now hear
- 26:09Speaker 1: me out. It's not just that the Yankees have lost
- 26:12Speaker 1: seven straight and as Aaron Boone revealed yesterday, a number
- 26:15Speaker 1: of their players are suffering from food poisoning, So that
- 26:17Speaker 1: might explain some of what's going on, the fact that
- 26:20Speaker 1: they're missing four regulars, including Aaron Judge plus Max Freed,
- 26:24Speaker 1: might explain also what's going on. But when Aaron Judge
- 26:28Speaker 1: comes out and is critical of the team, Aaron Judge,
- 26:31Speaker 1: who generally takes a very diplomatic tone in his conversations
- 26:36Speaker 1: with reporters, when he says we have a little lack
- 26:39Speaker 1: of focus going on, for him, that's a stinging criticism.
- 26:44Speaker 1: It's the equivalent of a hit job, as you might say.
- 26:48Speaker 1: So I don't know exactly who he was talking about,
- 26:51Speaker 1: but he could have been talking about Jazz Chisholm Junior
- 26:54Speaker 1: Lollipop last week ejection Sunday night at a time when,
- 26:58Speaker 1: as I mentioned, the Yankees are already down for regulars.
- 27:01Speaker 1: So the Yankees, obviously you're going to go through situations
- 27:05Speaker 1: even in great seasons where you're.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Not playing as well. All teams do.
- 27:09Speaker 1: But when Judge calls them out like that for the
- 27:12Speaker 1: lack of focus, well time to snap out of it.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Yankees a dorks for the week.
- 27:16Speaker 2: No doubt about that. Aaron Judge is certainly missed in
- 27:19Speaker 2: that lineup. Well, that's going to do it for us.
- 27:21Speaker 2: On Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal. Foul Territory is coming
- 27:25Speaker 2: up next, Eric Kratz Ross strippling Chicken strip on the
- 27:28Speaker 2: show with Scott Braun, Robert Murray, Guardian's Rookie of the
- 27:31Speaker 2: Year candidate Parker Messik, and the Athletics and Osras will
- 27:35Speaker 2: join as well. We are back on Monday. Ken is
- 27:38Speaker 2: of course get those questions in. Have a wonderful and
- 27:40Speaker 2: safe Fourth of July weekend. Bye everybody,
