• JB: Lapella. Like to welcome everybody back to Sports Talk with J B. And tonight we're doing NFL breakdown on Tuesday nights. So as usual, I got the usual suspect in the house. let's just introduce yourself, starting with you on Motown. Well obviously your name, but starting with you on guy with the hat. And tonight we're breaking down wins, losses, and surprises, disappointments. And of course, we got the takes. By the end of by the end of the night, we're gonna be talking about which which three and no team is is real, whether Purdy belongs in the top ten, and who's to blame for the Cowboys loss. I can't wait to hear that one. And also tonight, I'm gonna begin with with the usual coup. Smooth, Motown, and Trevor will be here soon. So we're gonna talk Saints, Cowboys, Ravens, Browns and the Panthers. And of course we gotta talk Eagles and Bears, which I don't think we need to talk about that one this week. the undefeated team in week four. So fellas, let's get started. Okay. All right. let's let's start off with the Saints and Raiders game over the weekend. Let's talk about what's changed. New Orleans was up eleven percept. But couldn't close the game out in on Vegas. So let's start with you, Smooth, from from when it came down to I'm starting for me, get out the way. For me, I feel like the it was pretty much the the the defense kind of let us down in that second second half, I want to say, a little bit of four. I know cousin was cousin was cousin, but damn, he wasn't that cousin. Smooth: the JB: so I So for me, I I think it was the defense let us down. And also I know everybody gonna blame Tyler for the for the two turnovers, but again, when you got somebody hitting your arm, hey, you're gonna throw a pick. And also that that fum that fumble, of course they pulled it show shot by shot, the same fumble that happened against Detroit. So Smooth: Hmm. JB: yeah, they showed it on frame from frame by frame. So I again I think they got it they got it out for us. So what's your thoughts on that, Smooth? Smooth: shoot me. Ooh. All right. agree with you a little bit on the JB: Yes. Smooth: defense. You know what saying? That they did let you down a little bit. But you know, sometimes the offensive line, you know, can't hold up all day long. You know what I'm saying? And yeah, so what? And Kubiak has got them, you know, he's kind of like doing what he did with your boy did with Seattle last year, like some kind of way he He get he got them hyped up to play through all the games, but say he could have pulled it off. If there's none of that bull JB: I agree. Smooth: crap would happen in the second half with it with with turnovers too, but. You know, I feel like they should have won that game. JB: Yeah, I agree with you man. That that fourth quarter, man, they they they sacked they sacked title of five five times total. And I didn't Smooth: and JB: know that he was he'd been sacked ten times in three games. Man, Smooth: and we'll you JB: he he getting that work done. What you Smooth: That's it. JB: think, E? What's your thing? Motown: I mean for me it's still early. I don't say that until after week five, but the team's still growing. And but Suck is just showing a lot, man. I mean he's showing a lot. We can't blame they lost on to me this week on any any area. It's like a a whole team lost this week. You know, he thinks they gave up offensive score when they were supposed to score and Me Shuk is just still showing growth and security. I like to ask a lot of fans what are they going down? Smooth: you Motown: Do they want Sanders down or are they gonna stick with Shuck? And I guarantee a lot of things they don't stick with Shuck Smooth: Thank Motown: just because of the way he's playing and the and the promise he's showing. But that was a a whole team loss that we and you know one thing we can't forget about cool curtain cool curtain. Smooth: Mm. Motown: We have many more to JB: Yeah. JB: so what so let's go back to you, Smooth. coming up what you think need to be done for this Monday night game coming up against the Falcons? Smooth: Tidy up that line a little bit. The opposite line. You know what saying? And make sure they can find a good, steady running game. You understand what I'm saying? It seems like even though they don't even know who they want to be the workhorse, PN went out, but they wasn't really using him either. I'm like, why you got him if you ain't gonna really use it? You know what I'm saying? I don't get that. So, but I just feel like they need to run the ball a little more. take the the pressure off the shock and that line. You know what saying? To prevent the little turnovers and shit and it should be all right. You know what saying? And the defense is tight up just a tad bit, you know, and it should be all right. They could win this game. Shoot. But we'll see if they adjust. JB: Check out e. Motown: You know, division games is just a whole nother world, man. It's not the same as s even some playoff games. Division games are just totally different. You can just say the teams are walking in zero and zero. And this this particular matchup is one of those games where you have to get an edge. Some kind of way you got to get the edge. Just because of the the vision matchup you have, you have to get an edge. And you know the old coach Sean Payton, he'll come with a play that's gonna kick him the edge, either if it's an onside kick or going forward on fourth down. So I think whoever gets the edge in this game, because Atlanta's very talented. And and and and the ones have shown a lot of promise. So I think it it's gonna come down to who has who's gonna get that early game. JB: So you sold on on Penton who had what's Pent yeah, Mike Michael, right, who came back on for Atlanta's Falcons? Pent yeah, you you sold on him continue to the the pre like he played on Sunday? Motown: With B. John Robinson, yes. Yes, yes, absolutely. JB: Make his job easy. Motown: Yeah. 'Cause Kurt Cousins is is is is is he he was cooking, man. and it's the Kurt that we talked about all season who always come good, but you know, when it comes down to that big game, he kinda go back to that, like I said, my my cousin Kurt me cousin who's not invited. So what y'all what you thought about the the that's first that's good, the Raiders? do you feel like they're they real is the real deal or that three and no just still early decide? Motown: Well, I I'm gonna say they're the real deal. I'ma say they're the real deal. What always kept me watching the Raiders was the defense. They always had quality defensive pieces. It just wasn't put together. And just a couple of stats on the Raiders. They're they're number one in turnovers, man. I think they have like fourteen turnovers on the season already. They they They're looking good on turnovers. They they're looking pretty good on turnovers. So how many did how many turnovers did they get against the Saints? I didn't really get that that's that. Did did Smooth: I don't know what it's called, but... JB: believe it was four. It was on what it was on what five yeah I think four or five turnovers total. Motown: The Saints. JB: Yeah, the Raiders had against the Saints. Motown: Yeah, because I see the Raiders have been making like four four post fumbles and maybe ten JB: Yeah. Motown: interceptions on the season. And that's that's major, dude. That's in three games, you popping the ball out. You know what I'm saying? So I I think they're the real deal. As long as Kirk, and I'm I'm saying it again because Kirk, a lot of people think he's gonna fizzle out. And even if he does fizzle. is working in the Raiders' favor because they have a solid number one pick that's watching Kurt right now. And when he comes in from what I've seen in Indiana, if he played like that, coming behind Kurt, yeah, they the real deal. They the real deal. Don't forget about Washington. Both of They got that running back that's sitting back there too. JB: Yeah. What's your thoughts move? Smooth: Man, I think the Raiders are a real deal, something to deal with. You understand? Because like I said, Kubiak got them boys right. I mean, he's a good coach, you feel me? But I just got to see if he's going continue to do his thing because that's who I'm watching at all. Is he going to keep on managing the game? If keeps managing the game, they'll be all right. because they like the line holding up. The defense is good. They added the new pieces on defense with a cross bit. Quinn and and a boy from a Philly. Man. They got the cornerbacks. They got the to me the best cornerback in the draft McCoy. People slept on that boy, but that boy good. He was the best cornerback when he played. So why you wouldn't think he wouldn't wouldn't be good when he get right? You understand so they playing good ball. So yeah, it is a real deal right now. This week on really this week on really challenged. JB: Right, and I'm with you on that 'cause I think as long as Cousin, as long as Cousins can continue to play turnover free ball, 'cause I think he have like, I had the stats earlier, I think like nine touchdowns, three interceptions. And they keep that boy protected. 'cause they they got some undercover on weapons. So I'm gonna say, Smooth: Yeah. JB: especially don't we even talk about the running back. so they got a nice running back and everything. And my god, Brock Burton Bauer, that dude was he he's man, that was embarrassing, bro. I I think he gave them confidence from the way he played and show and show his and showing his resilience and strength and courage. a and then, you know, the productivity, yeah. Think you know you give him confidence. Making him better, I don't know about that part because he don't contribute enough to with the ball. He just catching the ball. So confidence for the team, yes. Yes. JB: So you don't think about it, I don't know I'm sure why the Saints didn't do it, but them WM that don't open up the running game. If you put safety in the corner or a line, however you want to do it. But that's two people on him. And if the running game is removing, you know, even if he'll Smooth: Yeah, it's a drawality. This is the Cowboys play well well enough to win it or did it simple just couldn't finish at the end smooth. Smooth: Coach, coach, coach, coach. Messed the game up. Like I was talking to E earlier. Schottenheimer messed the last minute. For instance, say when we got the penalty on Lam, which was Lam did in the field, it was off his past interference, but they called him deep as a past interference. But still enough, I'm thinking we going to score just like anybody else. But. When first down the lineman jumped offside, so they brought us back. So Dak had ran the ball. And Dak ran the ball. He left for like 14 or 11 seconds on the clock. So Scheinheimer immediately called the timeout, right? Instead of letting the clock run. You know you could kick a field goal, so why not let the clock run down before you call the timeout? That's his first mistake. Then the second mistake was. When threw that ball out of bounds, immediately out of bounds, he told Dak to throw the ball out of bounds. He told him to throw it out and pick his wind up to get open, but he already threw it out of bounds. Soon he snapped it. So that was another mistake he made. He told the man, throw it out of bounds, we gonna kick a field goal. If he don't like the light, what he see. So then after that, they kicked JB: So you think Jack went to a red on on that play? because picking like pickings, that would have been a touchdown and he'd have just took a little s so I I I kinda I kinda Smooth: Right. It would have been a touchdown. JB: playing that on both I playing that on both of on that one on 'cause that was that was touchdown all day. Smooth: No, if you really look at it, yeah, that was touchdown. Because when so many tickets turned around, the ball was already gone. So when he snapped the ball, he just threw it out of bounds. That was a coach call. You think about it, he said, don't take a sack, throw it out of bounds. They asked that about it at the end, and he said, yeah, it probably took another second. And then he didn't even attempt to run the ball, not one time. We was running the ball well that game. You don't stand here and run the ball on the goal down at one time. Not even a play action. Motown: Especially JB: She gotta Motown: especially especially when it mattered at the end of the game, it was the coaching. I mean everything else up to that point you can say but it didn't matter because we're right here right now. And when it came to that point, with the field goal, the the the clock, the clock time management and the time outcall, all that's on the coach. Yeah, all that's on the coach. JB: I mean the kick off kicking Smooth: That's coaching. JB: yeah, kick kicking the ball and end zone. Smooth: Yeah. that's coaching, man. I ain't blaming the team for that. I'm not supposed for Motown: Yeah, that's that's all coaching. I mean you don't if you Smooth: that. Motown: don't in situations like that coaching, you you I think that you would have to remind your player what what he needs to do. Not saying he don't know, but just remind them this is what we're doing right here, right now. We're making sure that ball stay inbounds so they can catch so we can get some more time off the clock. You don't know where his mind is right now, so Smooth: Right. Motown: He probably thinking about kicking it, just kicking it out of bounds. They're kicking it out of the end zone. And that's what you know that's not what you want. So I think it's coaching because you should remind them exactly what's going on right here, right now. You know? That's that's that's coaching. That's coaching. Smooth: I want to add one more thing. Cleveland excuse me, everybody. Cleveland defense held Baltim I mean held Carolina to three percent and one thirteen in the first half. I mean that I know we talked we talked about the defense. I I know when Charles was on here, I wish he was on here for this ball, but he hiding. Motown: Hehehehe JB: I we talked last time about I think we said we thought that Cleveland would struggle offense, but we thought the defense would be there. And they they played some some good defense, like I just put the numbers up against Motown: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. JB: the number one cor quarterback, say yards wise, in the NFL, Bryce Young. So what's your thoughts about Cleveland defense holding it down? I think it was a defensive win. Also Watson came back and said, Hey, I'm still I'm still him, just give me some time. 'Cause that fourth quarter, man, that dude came in and he he he did his thing, I gotta say it, in the fourth quarter. I g That's Zach did. Look at his job, bro. That's that old watchman. And guess what? He got some receivers to the young. But he got some receivers over there too. But I always JB: yeah. Motown: I've been stuck on Cleveland's defense for for years, man. I mean, I I'm go I can go back to when they started drafting what's that the defensive back they drafted from Michigan, number twenty five. when they drafted that class right there, from that class for the next three or four years, they was getting stark defensive players on their team. And that's when they started building that that regiment with the cornerbacks that they have right now. They didn't have them cornerbacks for about three, four, maybe five years. They got One got away. So I've always been stuck on the defense, even with Miles Gary, you know. They still got defense with verse with the with the trade swap. So the defense has always to me been nept. It's been the coaching and in and out, the the doors opening in and out. And now they have offense, man. Deshaun Watson is giving them people confidence. He now you talk JB: Exactly. Motown: now you're talking now you want to talk about somebody who's trying play better, he's gonna make that team play better. JB: Right. Hey Smooth, let me ask you this. Defensively, I mean, everything was wrong. Everything. JB: Only yeah, only thing sh the only thing went right is everybody showed up. Smooth: I ain't got no more. Right. The receivers didn't really get open like they supposed to. They were making, if they had to catch it, they were making contested catches most of the time. I mean, that's a mess, bruh. Or or just do too much always running to the coach, trying to tell the coach, my son deserved this, my son should do this, or you know, just putting too much pressure on a kid first off, but what what y'all thoughts on parents just doing too much on for the for their kids? I'm talking high school, not college, but right now high school. Smooth: I think when you do that, you're probably pushing them away from the game, taking love away because you're putting too much on them. And it's to be a lot of pressure to them. I noticed when I was with my kids, when we were growing up, and I was trying to teach them how to just catch and throw at the time. And when they don't throw it right, and when I be trying to... hold him and talk, show him how to throw it. I see they was going to get aggravated and it'd like, I don't want to do it no more. We won't go inside and they do it all the time. And I used to get mad, but I don't, you know, show it, you know, I just, man, y'all tripping. But I was like, you know what? I can't force, I ain't gonna force it on them cause that's not going to make them like it. So I just left it alone. So if they want to play catch, they'll tell me if they want to play catch or something. You understand? So. But you know, when they got older, you know, they decided to play on the arm. But like I all I could do is just support them. But I know I won't put too much on them to where they would want to. The love will fall out. You know what I'm saying? So I say I wouldn't want to do too much with them. JB: Exactly. Yeah, I'm with you. I've been around the game so long, especially watching my boys grow from parkball and just to even college. I and I seen the lot of parents, man, always in the coaches here, in the coaches here. To me, I feel like they hurt the player. Because a coach don't want you in the air twenty four seven. You know, we we see your son every day at practice. We know what he's capable of. So I just never understood why people do that, man. My son should be doing this, my son should be knowing that. 'Cause me that's why I don't even bra I'm tell I'm gonna be real with you. You know, we all play ball, and we love it. But I don't even I I don't even like training my sons, my kids, I hired a personal trainer for them. I can teach him one way, then he go to like on Junior told me, he said everything he learned when he first his first year in college ball, everything he learned in high school, his coach told him take that shit and throw it out the window. So I would say, Man, let them let them kids play Motown: But you know though, JB: ball, man. Motown: you gotta let the kids play ball, but you know, it's it's you have parents that you can't really tell somebody how to parent their child. That's the first thing that you can't do. You can only suggest and and and give experiences through your life, but to tell someone how to run do they treat their child is is very offensive. So different parent parents are doing it different when they go into the coaches and it's gotta be a relationship between the coach and the parent. And the coach has to have he has to set boundaries with the parent. He has to, because you know I'm the coach of the team and when your kid is here, I'm coaching your child. You're the parent and I understand you have well being, but let me do my job here. And then when we talk, we talk we don't have to talk in front of everybody. That's what I'm saying. The relationship has to be formed between us the parent and the coach. So if the coach don't have a relationship with the parent, And the parents always yelling and then is there. That's kinda on him too. Now some parents are out of control. We know that. We know that 'cause that's my child. But it's the it's gotta be a relationship between the parent and and the coach. Yeah. JB: That's what I'm saying. Let the coach do his job. Cause I don't know when I was coaching on my flag team, I always had a to make sure cause these parents pay the good money for their kids to play on these games. So I always had a a team A and team B. Smooth: Mm-hmm. JB: I remember one one of his receivers, one of my kids was on team A, so I took him out to take let team B play, and his dad came up to me. I'm in the middle of the game, I'm I'm not paying no mind. He like, Hey, my son, you took him out the game for this and that reason. So at first I you know, I'm like trying to focus on my game, then reality hit that that that old Johnny came out. I turned around and went back to the stands where he was in front of all the parents and told him, Man, don't you ever come up to me again and tell me how to run my team and all this stuff. After that, I had no problem from him. But man, don't tell me how to do my job. So and I'm just doing flags. So I'm just going it's thinking about what these high school coaches or h college coaches go to, but that's my thing, Smooth: Thank you. JB: man. again, yeah, I understand I know what you're saying. Let you you can't tell a parent how to do their thing, but at the same time, like coaches tell us in these meetings, parents meeting, that's my child, my son, my kid, when he's on this field. Smooth: Yeah, right. Motown: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. JB: That's what the coach always tells us in these meetings. They're your kids when they leave this practice field, but on this in this field, in this in this football season, that's mine. So I just I don't know, but I just always had a problem with that. And I just feel like some parents put too much pressure on their on their kids, man. And even like I say Nothing wrong with promoting him, because even when Jay was in Jonathan was in home school, I would I young high school, I would say that he was one of the best. I never said the best, I say one of the best cornerbacks in in Texas. And numbers don't lie. But I never came out and my son this, my son that, this and that. And I'm not gonna go there, Rob.
