- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is the second.
- 0:16No, it's the third already of February.
- 0:19It is Monday morning and I am so delighted that you have tapped
- 0:23on play as today we begin our fifth year reading the Bible.
- 0:29Oh, what an epic journey it has been.
- 0:31Whether you have been here for one week or 4 * 52 weeks, you
- 0:37are most welcome friends. So good to have your company.
- 0:40And today we are going to kick off the next book in our
- 0:44biblical narrative, which is the book of Second Kings.
- 0:47Because really First Kings and 2nd Kings are the same story,
- 0:51same authorship, same time, but broken up into two volumes.
- 0:57And these are phenomenal volumes.
- 0:59You know this. This concludes the story of the
- 1:03nation of Israel as we see it in the the Old Testament.
- 1:07It begins in Genesis and it goes through the formation of this
- 1:10nation. They work so hard to secure the
- 1:13land in Joshua and then organise the land in Judges and Samuel
- 1:18and then the books of First Kings and 2nd Kings really shows
- 1:22how this land gets lost. Why that happens?
- 1:27And in the Book of Second Kings, we are going to see Elijah step
- 1:31to the fore and he is going to become a miracle worker, this
- 1:35amazing prophet, this kingmaker, and then we will see Israel
- 1:39disintegrate and then Judah disintegrate.
- 1:43This is this is the grand ending of this royal period for the
- 1:48nation of Israel and Judah. So there will be lots of
- 1:52intrigue and drama as we work our way through this, but all
- 1:57through it we have got the Holy Spirit prompting us to let us
- 2:01know what from this story can shape us today as we go about
- 2:06our lives. What an amazing privilege we
- 2:09have to read this, and what an amazing privilege I have to read
- 2:13it. And the beauty of First Kings
- 2:15and 2nd Kings is across the board.
- 2:17All historians and theologians across every brand of theology
- 2:22are consistent saying that the history as presented in these
- 2:26books is bang on. So as we read through this, this
- 2:30really is sharing this chapter by chapter what happened in the
- 2:34history of the nation of Israel. So you ready?
- 2:39Why don't we continue reading together as we begin the next
- 2:43volume, Second Kings chapter 1. After King Ahab's death, the
- 2:56land of Moab rebelled against Israel.
- 2:59One day, Israel's new king Isaiah fell through the
- 3:03latticework of an upper room at his palace in Samaria and was
- 3:07seriously injured. So he sent messages to the
- 3:10temple of Baal Zebab, the God of Ekron, to ask whether he would
- 3:15recover. But the Angel of the Lord told
- 3:18Elijah, who was in Tishbay, go and confront the messengers of
- 3:24the king of Samaria and ask them, Is there no God in Israel?
- 3:30Why are you going to Baal Zibab, the God of Ekron, to ask whether
- 3:34the king will recover now? Therefore, this is what the Lord
- 3:39says. You will never leave the bed you
- 3:42were lying on. You will surely die.
- 3:47So Elijah went to deliver the message.
- 3:50When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them why have
- 3:53you returned so soon? They replied.
- 3:57A man came up to meet us and told us to go back to the king
- 4:01and give him this message. This is what the Lord says.
- 4:05Is there no God in Israel? Why are you sending men to Bal
- 4:09Zebab, the God of Ekron, to ask whether you will recover?
- 4:13Therefore, because you have done this, you will never leave the
- 4:16bed you were lying on. You will surely die.
- 4:20What sort of man was he? The king demanded.
- 4:24What did he look like? They replied.
- 4:27He was a hairy man and he wore a leather belt around his waist.
- 4:33Elijah from Tishbay, the king exclaimed.
- 4:37Then he sent an army captain with 50 soldiers to arrest him.
- 4:41They found him sitting on top of a hill.
- 4:44The captain said to him, Man of God, the king has commanded you
- 4:48to come down with us. But Elijah replied to the
- 4:52captain, If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven
- 4:59and destroy you and your 50 men. Then fire fell down from heaven
- 5:06and kill them all. So the king sent another captain
- 5:10with 50 men. The captain said to him, Man of
- 5:14God, the king demands that you come down at once.
- 5:18Elijah replied, If I am a man of God, let fire come down from
- 5:25heaven and destroy you and your 50 men.
- 5:29And again the fire of God fell from heaven and killed them all.
- 5:36Once more the king sent 1/3 captain with 50 men.
- 5:40But this time the captain went up the hill and fell to his
- 5:44knees before Elijah. He pleaded with him, O man of
- 5:48God, please spare my life and the lives of these your 50
- 5:52servants. See how the fire from heaven
- 5:55came down and destroyed the first two groups.
- 5:58But now please spare my life. Then the Angel of the Lord said
- 6:03to Elijah, Go down with him, and don't be afraid of him.
- 6:10So Elijah got up and went with him to the king, And Elijah said
- 6:15to the king, This is what the Lord says.
- 6:19Why did you send messengers to Bal Zebab, the God of Ekron, to
- 6:25ask whether you will recover? Is there no God in Israel to
- 6:29answer your question? Therefore, because you have done
- 6:33this, you will never leave the bed you are lying on.
- 6:37You will surely die. So Ahaziah died, just as the
- 6:43Lord had promised through Elijah.
- 6:46Since Aiziah did not have a son to succeed him, his brother
- 6:49Joram became the next king. This took place in the second
- 6:54year of the reign of Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, king of
- 6:58Judah. The rest of the events of
- 7:01Aiziah's reign and everything he did are recorded in the Book of
- 7:05the History of the Kings of Israel.
- 7:17Our Lord, what a faithful servant you have or had in
- 7:20Elijah, that he would so consistently speak your word,
- 7:25that without a shadow of a doubt, the king knew who it was
- 7:28who had made that prophecy. Lord, may we too have that
- 7:33reputation that we are your people, and that we speak your
- 7:38truth. And Lord, sometimes that truth
- 7:41is just full of grace and love and acceptance, but other times
- 7:47that truth is something that people might not want to hear.
- 7:51But Lord, I pray that you would give us your wisdom that we can
- 7:56stand firm to what we know to be true in you.
- 7:58For that we can always speak with grace and with love.
- 8:05So Lord, as we go about doing the work of building your
- 8:08Kingdom here, I pray that you give us your Spirit, give us
- 8:14your wisdom so that our words truly can reflect you and your
- 8:18heart, Your heart that yearns to restore and to make whole again.
- 8:26And this is all possible through the gift that you've given us in
- 8:28Jesus. So we thank you for Jesus, and
- 8:31we pray all of this in His mighty saving name, Amen.
