Transcript
- 0:36Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast, episode 46,
- 0:42episode 1 of 2026. It feels weird that New Year was
- 0:46only just this week gone. I already feel like Christmas
- 0:50and New Year were like ages ago. I've forgot, forgotten about
- 0:53them almost. I don't know how you guys feel,
- 0:55but welcome Dean Menzies, how are you?
- 0:58Sunday afternoon. Good mate, yeah, no, making the
- 1:02most of the nice, nice weather here and making yeah got up, got
- 1:07a long run in so doing well. He says with a cheeky grin on
- 1:11his face whilst we're looking at Owen all wrapped up and snug in
- 1:14his Irish home. How you doing?
- 1:17Guys, when I tell you it is freezing, it's -2 feels like -7
- 1:23outside it is Baltic like probably like it's hard to run
- 1:29with the like, the wind in your face.
- 1:31It's so sore. Yeah.
- 1:33I've never experienced it before in my life.
- 1:36So yeah, it's not great for me. But we're getting through it.
- 1:39Just a couple more days telling him in the sun of Valencia.
- 1:42Well, hopefully not too sunny Valencia.
- 1:44So does the heating go on at like 6:00 AM or something?
- 1:48So I can't put my heating on a timer.
- 1:50So I had to like set an alarm for 6:00 turn because like you
- 1:54wake up and like you're just like when you go like you can
- 1:57like see the air if you get me and when you breathe out.
- 2:02So you have to set a timer to turn on the heat and but then
- 2:06the price of the heat. And so I leave it on for like 2
- 2:07hours, then turn it off. So I do that every every now and
- 2:11then. But yeah, not ideal.
- 2:14Because it's so hard to get out of bed when it's so cold, right?
- 2:18And like, even making it to the shower is just like, horrible.
- 2:21Or when you open the door to shower, fair enough, the warm
- 2:24water hits. Yet then when you open the door,
- 2:25just like a blast of cold air and you're like, Nope, come back
- 2:29on that water. Yeah, that like 2 seconds
- 2:33between the shower going off and getting the towel on you.
- 2:35It's torture. Yeah, it's not not ideal.
- 2:40But yeah, I hate to let you know that it is a stark contrast to
- 2:44what we've been experiencing, isn't it in.
- 2:46Yeah, I've just got out the pool.
- 2:49It's quite. Yeah.
- 2:50Well, I was going to complain about some of the runs this week
- 2:54because it's been pretty warm this week, not stifling, but
- 2:57yeah, very different, quite hot. Like, I don't remember Ireland
- 3:02ever being this cold, like, today, like, to Monday, it's
- 3:06like -3 Tuesday -2 Wednesday, zero with snow Thursday, one
- 3:10with snow, Friday. I might even get out to
- 3:13Valencia, you know, Saturday, eh -1 But then, like, because of
- 3:18the wind, it feels like -6 and -7 it's.
- 3:23Yeah. And the roads are lethal.
- 3:26Like you can't turn on them. As runners we can't turn anyway.
- 3:29But like, yeah, it's so hard to like turn.
- 3:32And you know, I got injured turning drum Brewer and Perth
- 3:35and I got injured turning so, so did I.
- 3:38The one, the one time it rained, I raced in it and I'm in the
- 3:42price. So I'd be, yeah, I'd be driving
- 3:45the extra distance to that treadmill.
- 3:47Yeah, yeah. Have you had to dig deep for
- 3:51your motivation levels during this winter, or have you been OK
- 3:53because you've been training well?
- 3:55No, I feel like once I've a race planned, like I'm, I'm just
- 3:58super motivated to like run that race.
- 4:02But it's sort of blessing and a curse because I in the past I've
- 4:06just planned races, races, races and your body just have no time
- 4:09to recover. So no, I'm always looking
- 4:13forward to something. So basically motivation at an
- 4:16all time high really. Apart from yesterday,
- 4:19yesterday's run was super, super shit.
- 4:21But that's just because of them. That was particularly bad by the
- 4:24rock. Yeah, yeah, didn't feel either.
- 4:26And yeah, stupid. Whatever half.
- 4:28We were speaking in the week in our WhatsApp chat about New Year
- 4:32and only one of us actually made it to see the New Year in.
- 4:36That was that was you and wasn't it?
- 4:38Dean and I were tucked up in bed.
- 4:40Yeah. Surprise, surprise, the wild
- 4:43party animal. Yeah, I went down to Cork with
- 4:47my when my girlfriend and her family and yeah, I just went to
- 4:51up her relation was playing live music in a pub in this tiny
- 4:56little pub. So yeah, I went down there.
- 5:00I think I stayed up to like half one or something like that, but
- 5:03then obviously slept in the next morning.
- 5:05But yeah, my sleeping pattern has been ruined this last two
- 5:09weeks. So and then I get back into the
- 5:11swing of things. Did you have any alcohol to stay
- 5:14up until that time or you you're on the Red Bull?
- 5:17I actually had a nap in the middle of the day so I could
- 5:20stay up that long and but no, wasn't drinking at all.
- 5:25My body. Do you guys have my body over
- 5:28there? My what?
- 5:30My body, oh, it's like a orange cordial or like Ray Bina.
- 5:37Yeah. Yeah, so my waddy's just the
- 5:39orange version. Export that one outside of
- 5:43Ireland. I don't think this episode
- 5:46right. We've got a few results to talk
- 5:48about from over the past week, bizarrely, mainly coming from
- 5:52the UK. Then we've got some elite
- 5:55fields. There's a lot of action going on
- 5:58next weekend on Sunday the 11th of January.
- 6:01So we're going to have a look at that there's a Houston half
- 6:04marathon with some interesting names in it as well.
- 6:06Cross country over in Florida. We can have a think about that
- 6:10and when his race in Valencia 10K along with a lot of or
- 6:15they're interestingly athletes that we seem to talk about every
- 6:18week. So we'll get into that too.
- 6:21Firstly, I am off on my holidays tomorrow for two weeks going
- 6:27going on tour. My friend is coming over and
- 6:31meeting him in Sydney. Spend like 5 days there and then
- 6:36I don't know if you got over there whilst you're here.
- 6:38I went to the Whitsundays. I went on a little trip there
- 6:42before I left. Man, it is incredible.
- 6:45You just have to watch out for a little jellyfish that can kill
- 6:47you. Yeah, I mean, I'm, I'm slightly
- 6:50concerned with the weather forecast because I don't know if
- 6:53it's going to be full of rain, but.
- 6:56Man, regardless, the water is crystal clear.
- 6:59It's, it's incredible. It's an incredible part of the
- 7:01world. OK, so.
- 7:03Is Becky coming with you? Nah, so my mates coming over,
- 7:07we're doing these two weeks and then he's coming back to Perth
- 7:10for a week with them. Becky and I here.
- 7:13The boys trip much running. We're done.
- 7:19No, no yourself. Yeah, yeah, that's the problem
- 7:22now. I won't be able to cycle.
- 7:23So all this for the fitness that I've managed to keep hold of may
- 7:27fall away somewhat. And my resolve on the like the
- 7:33return to run program and just doing every other day and all
- 7:36that might be tested because obviously I'll be wanting to do
- 7:39some things and I can't cycle. So I might just have to try and
- 7:43see if I can get a few day passes at local gyms here and
- 7:46there in. Between you won't lose much in
- 7:49like a week or two and you probably you've been going hard
- 7:52now for the last ages on the bike, so a little rest might do
- 7:55the world of good. Yeah, but you know, you, you
- 7:58quickly feel shit once you start.
- 8:00If say, if you allow yourself to think I'm on my holidays, you
- 8:04eat shit for like a week, you don't really train, then it's
- 8:07like you probably don't lose that much fitness, but you feel
- 8:09like you're starting from square 1 again.
- 8:12Yeah, yeah, it is what it is. And then after, actually after
- 8:16that, then we're going to Gold Coast for like 3 nights.
- 8:23Relive happy memories of Gold Coast Marathon.
- 8:26See if my fox is back to running yet.
- 8:30Take some Lincoln for them. That'll be a funny Lincoln.
- 8:33You can walk around together. Yeah, shit.
- 8:40Oh right. These results then.
- 8:43Battersea Park in the UK in London Friday night.
- 8:47No, not Friday night. New Year's Eve night.
- 8:49It was New Year's Eve classic. Friday night on the lights is
- 8:52the event. They put on five or six
- 8:55different events throughout the year.
- 8:58This one was sponsored by Mizuno.
- 9:00The prize money was 1000 Great British Pounds for first, £700
- 9:05for second and 400 lbs for 3rd and it was won by Easy Double
- 9:10Guest last year. Joe Wigfield in AI Think one
- 9:14second PB of 1336 and is very tightly contested.
- 9:18I don't know if you've seen the rails, because the guys second
- 9:21and third, Ted Higgins and Sebastiano Parolini, they both
- 9:26finished in 1337 officially. Actually, one of the listeners,
- 9:30I think Liam Kamadu, was there on the ground and he sent a
- 9:33video. EDM does a video through so you
- 9:35can literally see how close it is.
- 9:38How you do, It's so cool the way some of these athletes like wear
- 9:42the Mizuno gear. So you see them wearing the
- 9:44Mizuno singlet half tights and their new like shoe that a lot
- 9:49of people are talking about. It's so cool the way they do
- 9:51that. I think in reference to what Joe
- 9:53was saying, maybe as part of the setup of the race, the brand new
- 9:57sponsor it obviously, I assume they put the prize money forward
- 10:00and they give the athletes some race kit.
- 10:04So like they're not, they're not on like a sponsorship with them.
- 10:07But then Joe now he's probably got like Puma, Adidas and
- 10:13Mizuno, as well as maybe some of the race kits and shoes.
- 10:17Like, it's a decent little package if you're not going to,
- 10:19if you're not actually on a contract, isn't it?
- 10:21Just sidetracking on those Mizunas because I got to wear
- 10:24test some of them earlier in the year and are very good.
- 10:28They're like grip in particular is like phenomenal and now a
- 10:31very lightweight compared to a lot of the other shoes.
- 10:33I think like the ASIC super shoes now pretty comparable, but
- 10:37super poppy and responsive lightweight and their grip's
- 10:41really good. So I might have been back in
- 10:44those for a couple of those steadier runs I've done this
- 10:46week and feels really nice. And like the geometry of them is
- 10:50more like a traditional shoe because old Mizuno had like that
- 10:53massive cut out the heel which didn't suit a lot of people.
- 10:56Yeah. So I've, yeah, overtime being
- 11:00given a couple of pairs of the those super shoes and I just
- 11:03can't get them to work. Like just my foot strike doesn't
- 11:06work. These feel and there's not much
- 11:09it's much of A drop to them, which I don't mind.
- 11:11And I they feel a bit more like a traditional shoe, albeit
- 11:15they're not super high stacked, but they feel responsive and it
- 11:18feels like it has enough foam under foot like I am.
- 11:21So I think they're on to open up yeah.
- 11:25The only the only issue I think is just where they've put them
- 11:28for retail. That shoe that they've got out
- 11:33there now, I think it's like retailing for 420 bucks, which I
- 11:35just think is a bit too steep given what some of the other
- 11:40ones are on the market. But as far as the shoe goes, I
- 11:43think the shoes are late. Off the top of your head, can
- 11:46you think do Mizuno have any athletes under contract or do
- 11:50they not work like that? They're not in the space.
- 11:52Yeah, I can't think, I can't think of a name.
- 11:54I I know they do a lot of seating and provide a lot of
- 11:57shoes to different people, but as to actual athletes like we
- 12:01would associate with other shoe brands, no.
- 12:04I think Thomas Tej is the closest thing to that.
- 12:07Yeah, exactly. Maybe with them like sponsoring
- 12:11races like this, because that Friday night on the lights is
- 12:14one of like the the big ones on the UKC and isn't it?
- 12:16Maybe you will start to see them make a few more moves in the
- 12:19running space like that. The women's result?
- 12:23No, go on, sorry. Just a comment on the on the
- 12:26men's anything that you thought that Joe was wearing or using
- 12:29that might have given him the edge 13 by a second.
- 12:33I might have ran a couple of seconds quicker if you didn't
- 12:36have that nose tape on I reckon. Yeah, my God, I seen that.
- 12:40God No, Joe. I saw he, I saw nose tape on him
- 12:46and then I also saw in our when we get to it, but the Houston
- 12:50half preview, you see the picture of Galen Rupp that's
- 12:53been used for promotional material.
- 12:55I think if you zoom in on that, that's nose tape right there,
- 13:00so. Almost a broken nose.
- 13:05I am open to being to changing my mind.
- 13:10However I did try and do some research when I was decide
- 13:14because my initial point of view on this nose tape was like it's
- 13:18stupid. So I was like OK let's go and do
- 13:20some reading. Like is that actually any
- 13:23scientific benefit behind it? And that's why I've taken a hard
- 13:26stance because the research so far so far shows that like
- 13:31athletic performance, there's zero to be gained from it.
- 13:34Because as soon as you increase your effort to the point where
- 13:42you stop breathing through your mouth.
- 13:43So like any, anything you use for your nose is all through
- 13:46like day-to-day sedentary activity or sleeping.
- 13:49That's why you feel a lot of benefit through it from
- 13:52sleeping, but whilst under cardio activity you breathe
- 13:56through your mouth. Like if you're able to breathe
- 13:59your nose on a run, you're not running hard enough, or a hard
- 14:03like race or whatever, you're not running hard enough.
- 14:06That's what I stand by. Interesting.
- 14:08Wow, I don't know they they Nike Oregon project might know a bit
- 14:14about it. I'd assume we a we.
- 14:16Heard what Cam Levin said at the Night Guardian project.
- 14:22No good. No good in the bin.
- 14:25Leave that in 2025. What washed?
- 14:29There may be some placebo effect, and that's fine if
- 14:32people find a placebo effect from it, but I've clearly made
- 14:37my bed now, so I'm going to have to lay in it until scientific
- 14:40research says otherwise. I actually might wear some in
- 14:43Valencia, see if. The women's results at this meet
- 14:48was won by Alexander Bell. Do you remember her?
- 14:50She was a 800m runner for a long time.
- 14:54Now she's on the roads 1523. Second was Hannah Irwin 1526 and
- 15:003rd Alexander Millard also 1526. So another very tightly
- 15:06contested podium. I was looking as well.
- 15:10It's actually a pretty quick time that 1523 up for 5K on the
- 15:15roads for the British ladies goes in at #11 all time.
- 15:19But isn't but I see like pancake flat like it's a perfect loop.
- 15:23Yeah, it's perfect for. It and everyone seemed to run
- 15:28fast that night. If you compare to the men's
- 15:32result though, 1336 I didn't look exactly but I doubt that is
- 15:37quite as high as eleven all time.
- 15:39But still, 1336 is absolutely rapid.
- 15:42Sure. I mean, both those podiums are
- 15:45great, right? close races, fast times.
- 15:48It's the UK with these Rd. shorter, relatively shorter Rd.
- 15:52races. They seem to do it really well I
- 15:54think. Yeah, there's so much
- 15:56opportunity with the road races. Like when when I moved over, I
- 16:02found the kind of the change from being focused on the roads
- 16:06to like track having a big part in what you do and you race
- 16:10calendar and stuff not challenging, but it's obvious
- 16:13the difference. So like, I don't know if you
- 16:16agree. Oh and or you might disagree let
- 16:18me know. Like UK and Ireland it seems to
- 16:21be only like the top athletes would be doing stuff on the
- 16:25track like racing and or training whereas like everyone
- 16:31is doing the road races like that's for the masses.
- 16:34Yeah, like, I feel like, I feel like the track is pretty
- 16:37intimidating just for the average runner.
- 16:39I don't know why, whether it's this word like you're like on
- 16:43track is known to wear spikes or I don't know what it is, but
- 16:46yeah, I feel like people are intimidated by the tracks.
- 16:48So it's only like the select few that umm, actually run sort of
- 16:53similar to cross country. Like, you know, we have the
- 16:55average like road runner, daily hobby jogger doing like a cross
- 16:59country race. They just umm, sign up for the
- 17:03road races. But yeah, that's that's the
- 17:06same. Yeah, it's big over.
- 17:09Here there was about that you go.
- 17:12I was going to say there was an event in Ireland, a race in
- 17:14Ireland as well, so you just finish off here.
- 17:16OK, on Bell there she saying she used to run 800.
- 17:20She actually finished 7th in Tokyo, I was about to say only
- 17:24three years ago and then it's Tokyo 2021.
- 17:26So it's now getting on for five years ago.
- 17:30So she, she ran 157 in Tokyo there and she's actually like
- 17:34fully switched to the roads now looking at her power of 10 in
- 17:382025. Last year she's ran 12345 KS,
- 17:4312410 KS and even a half marathon as well.
- 17:47So and a half marathon and, and A10 KS 3131 at the London
- 17:53Vitality 10K and 70-O four at the Mizuno Half Marathon in
- 17:58Amsterdam. Like she's clearly not just gone
- 18:02to the roads for a laugh. Like she's having a good crack.
- 18:05Yeah, that's good inside. Didn't know that she.
- 18:07Didn't like that UK 800 meter women's team is absolutely
- 18:11stacked between Georgia Bell, Keely Hutchinson, I'm pretty
- 18:14sure David Jamiriki as well and it's so deep.
- 18:19Remember as well, what's the Phoebe Gill?
- 18:21She's like the 1718 year old. Another one.
- 18:25I think she had like stresses or something last year.
- 18:28She'll be back. There was a, there was a big
- 18:31race in Art, well probably the biggest race in that New Year
- 18:34period. And there was a, a Tom Brennan
- 18:37Memorial 5K which was a looped course in the Phoenix Park and
- 18:42that was won by a Hugh Armstrong on the lad side by Hugh
- 18:45Armstrong in 1444. He came seventh in National
- 18:50Cross and so he's been doing a few Rd. races recently.
- 18:54Ben Brunton from Saint Bridget Stacy was second in 1457 and
- 18:59then Christopher Keenan was third in 15 O four.
- 19:03And just special shout out to 4th Adam Nason, avid listener.
- 19:08He ran 15 O 9. So that was the lads and the
- 19:12females. I'll just get them up.
- 19:16That PV for Adam. Any idea?
- 19:18No, he's run 1448 or 9 I think in a 5K before Christmas there.
- 19:26So he still has to run off some of the Turkey apparently.
- 19:32Are you are you familiar with him besides the podcast?
- 19:35No, no, it's crazy. Yeah, that's cool.
- 19:39And on the female side, it was won by Faye Durvin in 1626 from
- 19:45Domes Harriers. Second was Sheila O'burn, who
- 19:50ran 1652 and then third was Helena Butterly who ran 1659.
- 19:59So yeah, that was probably the biggest race around the
- 20:00Christmas period in Ireland or New Year's.
- 20:04We probably have spoken about this previously, but like is the
- 20:08main is the premier light road 5K in Ireland in in the in the
- 20:12region the armor 5K that be. So technically that's not
- 20:19Ireland. Nice Northern.
- 20:21Ireland yeah, like the National 5K will be umm, like Arma is the
- 20:26fastest 5K, but OK, the like the National 5K will be in the
- 20:31Phoenix Park in UMM in summer. So like there's a series,
- 20:35there's like the National 5K, five mile, 10K or 10 mile.
- 20:39And recently the 10K, the National 10K was actually held
- 20:44in a village like close to me where I do a lot of my track
- 20:47work, called them Boeing, but and that's been taken off them
- 20:50this year and that's been thrown in the Phoenix park as well.
- 20:53So umm, a lot of them big national races are around the
- 20:56Phoenix Park, which I don't really like.
- 20:58I prefer if they trolled them around the country and.
- 21:01Yeah, and and so, but they they run over yours summer even
- 21:05though it's umm Rd. racing, so that road racing runs through
- 21:09your June, July. Or this.
- 21:11Yeah, yeah. So like the national or there's
- 21:13a big, massive dump. See marathon, half marathon,
- 21:16Dublin city half marathon. So last year it was on in like
- 21:21March and now it's been thrown on on like the 3rd of May.
- 21:25So sort of in the middle of the track season or when people are
- 21:28getting started into track season.
- 21:32And yeah, so I'd say like majority Rd. races will be run
- 21:36through the the summer and that race series that I was talking
- 21:39about there, that all leads up to Dublin Marathon.
- 21:42So it's like you can buy like a package and you get all them.
- 21:46You do all these Rd. races is part of your training ahead of
- 21:49and a crescendos with the marathon.
- 21:51Basically it just UPS it every time.
- 21:52So you do like the 5K, five mile, 10 mile, half marathon and
- 21:56then, yeah, the big one. That won the race that you just
- 22:01done. The results from there that just
- 22:03came comes a little bit too close to your Valencia race for
- 22:06you to have done that because obviously you've done the race
- 22:08last weekend and was there. Oh, no.
- 22:10Christmas 27th, yeah. And I didn't even know it was
- 22:12on. Like I need to get way more
- 22:14clued into like the big Rd. races that are happening.
- 22:19I didn't even know it was on. So I literally just picked the
- 22:22local one for me basically. And I knew the course is pretty
- 22:26good. So yeah, that's why I picked the
- 22:28Navin 1. Was there any prize money at
- 22:30that one? The one you recap. €100 which
- 22:37could be they don't. I might get in serious trouble
- 22:40for this but I'm going to say it anyway.
- 22:44I think the age category prizes are absolutely crazy.
- 22:49Like they had £100 for freaking over 3540506070 male and female.
- 22:57So you're 1. That they should.
- 22:59You gotta. You gotta respect your elders.
- 23:02You're one who won the female side.
- 23:05She got £100 for the overall and the over 40 or something and
- 23:12it's yeah, I don't know how I feel about it.
- 23:15I think maybe, I don't know, I'm, I'm all about a bit of
- 23:19prize money rewarding people for doing well.
- 23:22But you would think it would be proportionate, like it shouldn't
- 23:25be the person that wins should get the lot.
- 23:28Like if you win the race you would get more, wouldn't you
- 23:31then? And then an age group, I would
- 23:33have thought. Yeah.
- 23:35So yeah, I feel like there should be like time bonuses as
- 23:39well or something. I don't know how they should do
- 23:42it, but it's hard. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:45You would think it'd be structured towards people that
- 23:47are putting in, you know, yeah. Yeah, some somewhat comparable
- 23:52to like the the 3rd place finish or something like that for an
- 23:56age group when seems to be general consensus maybe do you
- 24:00want to do your training or do we do these?
- 24:04Yeah, let's go. Do you want to?
- 24:05Do you want to lead off with your training run?
- 24:08I'll go and then quickly I rode 6 times this week I had I had to
- 24:13have day off because last week I rode 7 times through the
- 24:17Christmas period with the additional public holidays and
- 24:21just find yourself have more time because of that.
- 24:24But then I was feeling the fatigue from that this week, so
- 24:28much so that I consulted my psychiatrist, Mr. ChatGPT and
- 24:36explained my symptoms of fatigue and it sounds like I have been
- 24:43on the fuel and surprise surprise.
- 24:48We didn't call this like a month ago.
- 24:52Yeah, so the, the muffin afterwards just isn't
- 24:55substantial. It's not cutting the mustard.
- 24:59But basically I was feeling tired from like like on work
- 25:02days and stuff or any day from like midday, which is just
- 25:06weird. Like if you tired generally, you
- 25:09might stop feeling tired like 7 PM, 8:00 PM when you sit down or
- 25:12something. But tired at midday all the way
- 25:15through to like 5 or something in the evening.
- 25:18And I was like, this isn't normal.
- 25:20What's going on? So through a bit of back and
- 25:23forth with Doctor ChatGPT, he identified that although I have
- 25:28breakfast before the ride, like 2 pieces of toast or whatever,
- 25:32and then my oats afterwards, the hole that I'm creating whilst
- 25:36I'm riding isn't being filled up because I'm not fueling during.
- 25:42And then for even more of a double down on that when I'm
- 25:46just having a bloody muffin afterwards, that's just
- 25:51wasteless carbs. Because if I had the carbs
- 25:55during the ride, it's helping me with fueling to perform an
- 25:58energy, but if I'm having the carbs afterwards, it's a waste
- 26:01of time. I should probably be having
- 26:03protein or something to actually help with recovery.
- 26:07So trying to be a bit more smart.
- 26:08So during these six rides on two of them Saturday and today
- 26:12Sunday, I took out two chocolate hot cross buns in my in my
- 26:20little vest bib neck thing because I don't know if you're
- 26:24aware Owen, but these the ride and tops, they're like zip
- 26:27through skin type things on the back of them.
- 26:30They have like these very handy pockets so you can reach around,
- 26:34there's like 3 pockets usually so you can carry your phone,
- 26:37your keys, any gels or whatever. And obviously because you're
- 26:40kind of like bent over, they just rest on your back and you
- 26:43don't realize it's there. So I had I had two chocolate hot
- 26:47cross buns floating around on my back and at one point on
- 26:51Saturday I pulled one out and was nibbling on it and a guy
- 26:55went past me and he's like, have you packed a picnic Mace?
- 26:59You are apparently you did well on that Rod.
- 27:02The guys are saying run. Yes, they're very much at the
- 27:06back of a rather fast pack and managed to survive.
- 27:09There's a few touch and go moments but if anyone seen my
- 27:13Strava the caption was DB AP which was the mantra I was given
- 27:18to myself as it was getting tough and I was thinking about
- 27:21dropping off which stands for Don't be a pussy.
- 27:24So I managed to hung hang in there like.
- 27:28If you could like do you have any like carb mixes in a drink?
- 27:33Like I'd say they'd be even easier to go down and then a
- 27:36freaking hot cross bone be toasted or soggy by the time you
- 27:41get eaten it. Yeah, well, because it's
- 27:43chocolate, the warmth of my back warmed it up a bit, so it was
- 27:47nice and melted. Oh dear, actually, did you ever
- 27:50try the Biscoff ones then? Oh so good.
- 27:53Oh, lethal so so they're already in the supermarkets here.
- 27:57I've been through a pack Easter. Because they're normally come in
- 28:00just before Easter. Yeah, they were in on Boxing
- 28:03Day. Wow.
- 28:07Put them down there, your big Nixon.
- 28:10You'll never you'll never under fuel again.
- 28:12If if hot cross buns is going to be my fuel and method, they
- 28:15might do a hot cross bun counter between now and eastern see how
- 28:18many I can get through. There could be a little trick
- 28:23for the marathon as well, just nimble on one of them.
- 28:26Well in all honesty I don't know, half marathon in Melbourne
- 28:30the other year and the day before when I was doing like a
- 28:32semi car blur that I smashed 3 hot cross buns and around well
- 28:38so maybe it's the way to go for me.
- 28:41Just do the most not running things and you'll run well.
- 28:45That's the way it seems to work. This is not advice where you
- 28:50have to stipulate, it's not financial advice.
- 28:52This is not performance or fuel and advice.
- 28:57Yeah. But besides that, I think 360
- 29:00odd K ended up with on the bike and three runs.
- 29:04So I was up to 2 by 15 minutes today, which felt good.
- 29:09So itching to keep them ticking over.
- 29:11I'd done it at like 11:00, so it was very hot, which was good
- 29:14because my, I don't know, maybe four 20s pace for these 4
- 29:19fifteens enabled me to stay in the high one 40s, low one 50s
- 29:24heart rate. So got half an hour's worth of
- 29:26Zone 2, coincidentally. That's a that's a great training
- 29:30week. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:34Moving forwards, how about you? You're a few steps ahead of me
- 29:38going well as well. Think.
- 29:40Yeah, yeah. I can recap my week.
- 29:42I should mention do you know on Strava it it shows you an
- 29:48activity from one year ago? Oh yeah.
- 29:50And it was the the set we did around late Munga, you know
- 29:54which Crescendo did a park run, you know the three by 5K that we
- 29:58did. I was so cooked.
- 30:04That was a hard warning, but yeah, that was that was this
- 30:08time last year. Did you manage to dip on the 15
- 30:11minutes on that last one? I think it was maybe 15 flat.
- 30:18Oh, I've got 15-15 or three. Sure.
- 30:22I think was I like 1540 on that last one.
- 30:25I think yeah, it definitely feels like a year ago if not 5
- 30:29based. On that my week I should have
- 30:38this up. So yeah, I was off work this
- 30:42week and I found a bit of a loop from home, which was about 12
- 30:47KS, which I kept doing those days, but I did that loop
- 30:52morning and afternoon on the Monday.
- 30:55It was recently warm. I ended up doing it a bit
- 30:58quicker than what I had been, so closer to that sort of four
- 31:02minute pace on Monday and then every second day I was just
- 31:07having as a lighter day. So I was 24 KS on the Monday,
- 31:10but then only 10 KS running a bit easier with some strides on
- 31:13Tuesday, Wednesday back to in that loop around that sort of
- 31:18four minute to four minute 10 pace again.
- 31:21Is this your herdsman loop? Yeah, they've just added it.
- 31:25It goes around Herdsman, but it has a there's a new bike path on
- 31:29the way back that I can jump on that makes it a a loop rather
- 31:33than just straight up and back the same Rd.
- 31:35So I don't know, I just F feel like loops are better than out
- 31:39and back. So yeah, did that twice again on
- 31:43the Wednesday. Thursday again, just another
- 31:46easy jog and some STR. Oh no, an easy jog to someone's
- 31:50house. That was New Year's Day.
- 31:52And then the afternoon, just a jog and some strides.
- 31:55Very small jog, 25 minutes and some strides.
- 32:00Friday again, do it. I did that loop in the morning
- 32:03around that 4 minute pace and then just an easy 30 minutes in
- 32:06the afternoon. Saturday was the group ride, not
- 32:10with Ryan, I just went with the another group.
- 32:13But yeah, it's about 80 KS. And then this morning was 80
- 32:16minutes around, yeah, 415 pace. Everything's feeling much
- 32:24better. The only time where I feel a
- 32:27bit, it feels a bit unpleasant that joint is when I'm having to
- 32:30move fast. So I'm just a bit hesitant to do
- 32:32anything that's moving too quickly.
- 32:35But certainly like this zone one, Zone 2 running feels fairly
- 32:38pleasant, which is good. And like the next day I'm in no
- 32:42discomfort at all, which is nice.
- 32:43So yeah, really happy with how things are trending.
- 32:47Road 80, KS ran 110. Boys getting back.
- 32:52Getting there. So Ballarat is not off the cards
- 32:54yet, huh? I I don't think I'll, I won't
- 32:58look to pick a race. I'll say this to Ryan, I think
- 33:03there's so many great races that we can choose from.
- 33:06I'll just look to get fit 1st and then I'll find something to
- 33:09train for. I think if I pick a race I'll
- 33:11just get excited, so I won't look to pick anything.
- 33:14Maybe a little boys trip to Melbourne, huh?
- 33:16Melbourne Marathon. Maybe.
- 33:18Maybe. It clashes with our our home,
- 33:23our home. Race shit.
- 33:25The one we spoke so highly of last year.
- 33:28That's right, I. Might be flying.
- 33:31I might be flying back over for that one.
- 33:33For what for Malcolm might be? For Brett.
- 33:36They signed you instead of Paul Ian.
- 33:41This is close similar name Ian Owen.
- 33:45Easily confused. Yeah, Dean, you've been on your
- 33:50Strava, you've been building your mileage ever so slightly
- 33:54and consistently now, haven't you?
- 33:55Like so your body's obviously got used to it during this
- 33:59period, but given you've run over 100K for the first time
- 34:02this week, does it like injury aside, just body in general,
- 34:07does it seem to be handling it OK?
- 34:09Yeah, it does. Like, you know, the normal
- 34:14tightness you get, like, I'm getting tight in different
- 34:17areas, but none of them feel foreign.
- 34:21But certainly in the last few weeks, it's felt better.
- 34:24Like in those first four weeks, everything felt pretty
- 34:29uncomfortable. Like all that stuff felt really
- 34:32unpleasant mechanically moving. Whereas now it feels, yeah, it
- 34:35feels much more normal, which is good if that's what you mean.
- 34:41Like I, I just remember being it everything feeling much more
- 34:45difficult in the first maybe 5 weeks, getting everything,
- 34:49loading everything up. Whereas now it's feeling much
- 34:51better. I'm doing a lot more prehab
- 34:54stuff in the morning though, so that when I do get out the door,
- 34:57it feels much better. Whereas next week once I'm
- 35:00jogging back into work, I'll probably have to do what I
- 35:02normally do, which is jog for 5 minutes, stretch a bit and
- 35:05loosen up and then get going. Yeah, 100K plus riding as well.
- 35:09Now that's you're almost, I know you're not putting any intensity
- 35:14back into your runs yet, but you've almost moved out of the
- 35:16like return to run phase. And from here you could, you'll
- 35:19actually start to build fitness properly now, even if you just
- 35:23stay with consistent like relatively easy mileage plus the
- 35:27rides. Yeah, I feel like I'm getting
- 35:29fitted yourself. Like if I could do these weeks
- 35:32for the next 4 weeks it wouldn't be bad I don't think.
- 35:34Yeah, good base building time. Fuck Campi.
- 35:40I. That's.
- 35:41Right. I gotta get in shape.
- 35:44In shape. I got kudos from today's run
- 35:47from rent in Japan, So I appreciated the you might be
- 35:51saying something that's slightly better than just a plod, So I
- 35:56appreciated that. Oh shit, so if Owen was a tough
- 35:59kudos, he's been even tougher. Yes.
- 36:02If it's not a 30K day, does it really?
- 36:04Is it really a day? Yeah, I'm, I've probably been
- 36:07unfollowed actually. Nice.
- 36:12Mr. Valencia, how's how's your final preparations been?
- 36:16I it's been going OK, still in one piece, which is a positive,
- 36:22but I'm yeah, just trying to keep a living things on.
- 36:25Started off with them just a 60 minute easy run on Monday 60
- 36:32minutes at like 4 fifteens and not evening I just done 45
- 36:37minutes easy so 10K at 4 sixteens.
- 36:44Tuesday was a track workout. So this Tuesday I was actually
- 36:50driving down to Cork for New Year's Eve and Cork is like Cork
- 36:55is a massive county in Ireland. So where I'm from it takes like
- 37:03let's say 2 hours to get to Cork city, but where I was going was
- 37:09like another hour and a half hour and 45 past Cork city and
- 37:13you're still in Cork. So it's basically like Next Stop
- 37:16America, New York. So I had to get my Rd. in pretty
- 37:20early. The session was it was 6 minute
- 37:26threshold at the start and then it was 4 by 2K.
- 37:33So that worked out. I was trying to hit these two
- 37:35K's in around 3-3 minutes, three O 1.
- 37:42So I was pretty, I was pretty bang on, but the first one was
- 37:48was 6 O one, second Rep was six O 1, 3rd Rep was I think 6 and
- 37:57then the final 2K was 257. So yeah, this session, I find
- 38:06this session super head solo. Like you're just running like so
- 38:10many laps of the track and along the back straight there was a
- 38:12bit of a headwind as well. And so I was just happy to get
- 38:17it done. And the recovery in between them
- 38:20was 2 minutes, thirty. So pretty decent recovery just
- 38:23to like totally like recuperate. And I done it in a pair of old
- 38:28and super shoes and my first ever pair of super shoes,
- 38:31actually the first like ASIC Meta speed Plus or something
- 38:35like that. So.
- 38:37How many KS do we put on them then?
- 38:39Oh, there's like 300 on them now.
- 38:43So yeah, they'll be going in the in the bin.
- 38:45And I wear my the new behind super company for the ones that
- 38:49I wore Maragami, I haven't worn them in a race since that.
- 38:53So yeah, I'll bang. I'll break them out pretty soon.
- 38:57This session didn't make its way to the you strive A followers
- 39:02notice. Yeah, I noticed that as well.
- 39:06I haven't been posting much. I only post sort of the sexy
- 39:08stuff because I feel like I just clogged up the freaking the feed
- 39:14and yeah, I probably should have posted this one.
- 39:17And I normally like detail. I didn't even like normally
- 39:22assign shoes to sessions so I can see what mileage is on
- 39:24shoes. I haven't even done this for
- 39:26this one. This today.
- 39:27What? That day was a hectic day, to be
- 39:28fair. Like as soon as I finished this,
- 39:32went home, got some more breakfast and started the long
- 39:36drive down to Cork and so. He's gone all VIP on us.
- 39:43Do we have to pay to get access to?
- 39:45His I don't know what, I don't know what we have to do with.
- 39:48Followers, just listen to the podcast and you'll hear it.
- 39:55He. Could be saying anything now I
- 39:57didn't. Last Rep was 539.
- 40:05Yeah, you'll see Valencia that. So then I finished that session
- 40:13at around 11:15. So by the time I got home,
- 40:16showered, ate breakfast, I said it was like half 12 when I hit
- 40:19the road. Umm, So we, I stopped at this
- 40:25play. I stopped like an hour on the
- 40:27journey to get a sandwich because I still had another run
- 40:30to do so. Umm and then we drove for
- 40:33another hour and stopped in this place called a casual in
- 40:37Tipperary. If you look up, if you guys look
- 40:39up Cashel in Tipperary, there's a stunning like rock castle as
- 40:45you're driving into it. So yeah, I literally pulled over
- 40:49there. My girlfriend and her sister,
- 40:51they went to get lunch and I ran for an hour.
- 40:55Is that why it's named Cashel after the castle or?
- 40:57Yeah, I don't know. It's called the Rock of Cashel,
- 41:01but there's a castle there can. You see Cashel see a small town.
- 41:06Yeah, well, it's actually pretty big.
- 41:11And so yeah, I don't an hour. So it was like 13 K at 4:20
- 41:16sixes. So like that was a big day.
- 41:18That's a That's a 30K day and the next.
- 41:22Day second run was only like 3 hours or so after your your
- 41:26first session. Yeah, yeah, so well, how do you?
- 41:29Feel. It was at 1451, it says on
- 41:35Strava. I actually felt all right, to be
- 41:37honest, once you're going like now the next day I probably felt
- 41:40a little bit tired, but umm, no, it was grand.
- 41:44I'm sort of banking a lot of mileage in the early start of
- 41:46the week, early part of the week.
- 41:48So then like like I've basically started tapering.
- 41:51I had a day off on New Year's Day and then I just done a
- 41:55little session yesterday. But anyway, umm, so the New
- 42:00Year's Eve, I actually the part we're going to Darren
- 42:04Mcelhenney, the Irish runner. He's from there and I text his
- 42:10brother Owen Mcelhenney. He I text him for to go for a
- 42:13run and we both went out for 60 minutes.
- 42:17So that was 13.8 K four 20s. And these were like rolling
- 42:22hills and the views were stunning.
- 42:25Like I could easily like live down here.
- 42:27Now, there's no track, which is the only bad thing, but the loop
- 42:29is is stunning. Yeah, it's a place called
- 42:33Glengariff and the tiny little tourist town which is in
- 42:38literally the backyards of nowhere.
- 42:40Dean, do you reckon he's he signed the deal with like the
- 42:43tourism board an island or something, the way he's going
- 42:45through all? These it sounds beautiful.
- 42:48Please look up this. Place all our sponsors.
- 42:52Look up Glengariff GLENGA or or IFF.
- 42:55Is Darren Michael Henry's brother Owen?
- 42:58Is he a good runner? Yeah, he ran that tell for 10K
- 43:01and he ran like 2936 or 38 or something like that.
- 43:06So yeah, there's something in the family.
- 43:09It was pretty coastal there. Yeah, yeah, yeah, certainly.
- 43:11Like Next up America, but there's just big mountains in
- 43:15the background. And we were so lucky with the
- 43:17weather. Beautiful.
- 43:19It was just a lovely crisp cold. And so.
- 43:24Yeah. He Salmon rock.
- 43:25Did you see that? No, I actually didn't see that
- 43:272. 100 people, apparently population 200.
- 43:32Yeah, that's gorgeous. So yeah.
- 43:36And then I dressed that even enough had New Year's Day off
- 43:42and then I drove back up home and because I had my last sort
- 43:46of like proper big session on Saturday, which was yesterday.
- 43:51So the usual one would cool down and then this was for four sets
- 43:58of 5 by 400 meters, so just 20 by 400 off 30 seconds and jog a
- 44:05lap between sets. So these I was hitting around
- 44:08like 60 eights, 60 sevens, which which was good.
- 44:15So that's like 10K worth of work and I wore was wearing the Puma.
- 44:20Oh, no, the Nike peg plus. So sort of like not the standard
- 44:27peg, but there's a bit more pop to it.
- 44:31And yeah, I felt like after the first Rep I was like, might be
- 44:36able to hold on for this, but I feel like the lap jog just gives
- 44:39you, gives you sort of like a new lease of life because 30
- 44:43seconds is nothing like you literally cross the line. 10
- 44:48seconds is up by the time you get back this another 10 seconds
- 44:51and then you're going again. So yeah, it's super, super short
- 44:55recovery. And then that evening I done
- 45:00another 60 minutes, so 13.7 K at 420 threes and it started to get
- 45:09cold. So that evening it was frosty,
- 45:13like you're wearing like a snood just layering up.
- 45:16And then yesterday morning, we I got out for just 45 minutes easy
- 45:23because that was like another 30K day on, on the Friday.
- 45:28So sorry. They then literally just four or
- 45:30five minutes and I went up to this place called the Hella
- 45:32Tara. It's another magical place.
- 45:35Yeah, it's really cool. But it's just a grass, basically
- 45:38a loop. Both pretty hilly because the
- 45:41roads are too icy to run on. And I got I think 20 minutes
- 45:45into this run and I just felt super super shit.
- 45:48I don't know why. Like I had my normal breakfast
- 45:50of like 2 sizes of toasted coffee then I stretched out and
- 45:53then I went up. But I don't know whether it was
- 45:55like the cold. Like my body was literally like,
- 45:57it's probably the coldest run I've done in like 5 years and my
- 46:01body was in shock. But I, yeah, after 20 minutes I
- 46:06have to run back to the car. And like, I've dislike emergency
- 46:08like square bar. I know we always thought I'd
- 46:11leave like a serial bar in my car just in case I feel shit
- 46:13during a run. And so yeah, I literally ate
- 46:15that, sat in the car for a few minutes and then I got back out
- 46:19and like, I felt much better. But you know, it's just that
- 46:21like light week feeling in a run just feels shit.
- 46:27But yeah, I got it done anyway. 10K at 433 pace.
- 46:30And now today I have a 70 minute run scheduled.
- 46:36But like, it's all really just jogging here.
- 46:39I think I've sort of a session on Tuesday.
- 46:41It's like a bit of threshold and then 21K's at like 5K pace or
- 46:46something like that. So the bulk of the work is done,
- 46:48I just need to stay healthy, which is everyone is sick.
- 46:53I'm dreading going back into work tomorrow and everyone will
- 46:56be coughing and spluttering and yeah, but look, nearly there.
- 47:03That's 110 so far. So another 70 minute run.
- 47:07I might get 100 and 2000 and 24 odd let's say.
- 47:11It's a great wake. Yeah, get in there.
- 47:14Then did you feel better for the rest of the day yesterday?
- 47:17Did you change what you would be after a run to try and bump it
- 47:21up or anything like that? What happened after?
- 47:23So like I mix it up sometimes I've like if I time I've like a
- 47:27bowl of porridge before I run and then I just wait that little
- 47:30bit longer, let digest and so and put I normally during the
- 47:36week when I'm going to the gym, I just have literally 2 slices
- 47:39of this. It's like a fruit loaf.
- 47:41So it's got like it's basically bread with like raisins in it.
- 47:43I love it. But the the the slices are
- 47:45pretty small. But that normally does me and
- 47:48for like my easy like our run for a 5 minute run in the
- 47:51morning. I just don't know why whether it
- 47:53was like the cold, like my body was working extra hard to like
- 47:56stay warm or something like that.
- 47:59And bought Yeah, I don't know why.
- 48:02Like I'm I'm sort of making like a conscious effort now to
- 48:06because I'm not going to be training as much the next little
- 48:09like this might be totally wrong and I need to talk to my
- 48:11dietitian about this. But I'm going to try and like
- 48:14cut back a little bit on the carbs, just like maybe try and
- 48:18get a little bit lighter. Like apparently my Raceway is
- 48:21like 70 KG and at the moment I'm like 72.
- 48:25So if I could lose like, and I know I'm normally around like
- 48:297172, but and that could be a lot of water weight as well.
- 48:33So if I could get to Valencia around like 70 and like I'm only
- 48:37running once a day now. So I feel like I don't need to
- 48:40eat like let's say for breakfast, I might have like 2
- 48:43scoops of parts instead of three.
- 48:44So like nothing crazy, just little things here and there.
- 48:47And then come like Friday, Saturday trying like like you
- 48:52don't need a cab load for a 10K. It's like you're running like a
- 48:54Mart. Like it's certainly hopefully 30
- 48:55minutes worth of running. So it's not going to be the end
- 48:58of the world. Just like before the race stand.
- 48:59Sort of like eat a good dinner fueled.
- 49:02Nice breakfast and yeah, ready to rock.
- 49:05I reckon it's natural. I reckon everyone thinks that
- 49:08way. Like coming into the taper, all
- 49:10I can, I need to back off my diet a little bit just to like
- 49:13stay light and fresh and stuff. Because I know I've kind of
- 49:17thought that before. And then but then when you hear
- 49:20someone else say it, you, you like, yeah, we don't need to do
- 49:24that. But then I physically do it.
- 49:26So it's easier to tell someone else what to do than to tell
- 49:29yourself what to do. So I'm with you on it.
- 49:33And like it's like around 20, around 1427 the other day and
- 49:39like, I don't know, around Christmas you're sort of like
- 49:41paranoid that you're eating a little bit more like a few
- 49:44chocolates here and there. So it's produced in my own head
- 49:47as well. Actually get to the start line,
- 49:49get it over and done with, but no, even looking at the fields
- 49:53like it's super, super exciting. Are we able to ask what a good
- 49:57day looks like? My PB at the moment is like
- 50:013041, so under that would be like that's minimum.
- 50:08If I don't get under that it's going to be a terrible day and
- 50:10it's my own fault. But like I'd love to break 30
- 50:14and I think I should like I think I'm going to go out pretty
- 50:18like if I go out and 15 hit the 5K and 15, I should be able to
- 50:22kick down off that. And like I'm the first I've ever
- 50:25been on the session sort of like are showing it.
- 50:29And so like if I like, I don't know them session this week off
- 50:35like heavy legs and all that sort of shit.
- 50:37So when I freshen up, get into a nice pack, like I don't want to
- 50:42put a number on it because God only knows what can happen.
- 50:45So look, I I want to break 30. It's just how far under we'll
- 50:52see. You'd imagine there will be a
- 50:55massive group going through halfway in 15 minutes.
- 50:59They'll probably be like a lot of people immediately ahead of
- 51:03it as well and like getting a little bit of a little bit
- 51:05excited. So the temptation will be do you
- 51:08go with it or not? But yeah, if you can, if you can
- 51:11stay in that 15 dead group, you you should hopefully go well
- 51:14from there and like. It's there's I'm in the third
- 51:18wave, so there's the elites, there's the sub elites and then
- 51:22there's me. So I'm my wave is like the 30 to
- 51:2531. So if I could yeah.
- 51:28And there's 30 seconds between each wave apparently.
- 51:33What? From what I've seen, So yeah,
- 51:37you never know, you might start, boys might blow up and you might
- 51:40start reeling back to people in. But like when they get a 32nd
- 51:43head starting, Yeah, like it's over 200 meters.
- 51:46So look, we'll see. I'm not going to go out like an
- 51:48idiot anyway saying that. Problem almost the perfect group
- 51:54to be in, because if you think of it, everyone who has a PB
- 51:56between 30 and 31, they're probably going to try and be
- 51:59breaking 30, whereas if you're in the one ahead of that,
- 52:02they're all maybe looking at like 29 low or something.
- 52:05You might just get sucked through too quick.
- 52:07Yeah, exactly. And like in my hand, I'm like
- 52:10off, I get into that group. I could just start off store,
- 52:13but no, I think I'm in the right group.
- 52:16I just need to like perform and like pull it off.
- 52:21Exciting. Yeah, can't wait.
- 52:23Flying out on them, flying out on Friday.
- 52:26So I'll have a little bit of time there.
- 52:28Well, the women's elite happened to start.
- 52:30Like will you be out of key off anyone that's getting paced,
- 52:32light paced or anything like that?
- 52:34I feel like they should be beside the elite men.
- 52:37So I don't know. I think I've seen the fastest
- 52:40woman is like a 2954 girl umm so would have been nice to sort of
- 52:45start with them but umm I'm not I I'm pretty sure this starts on
- 52:51like two sides. I watched the start of it the
- 52:52other day and it's like two sides of a street they start on.
- 52:56So hopefully they put the women on one side and like the men on
- 52:59the other side. But I'm really not sure how
- 53:02that's going to happen. Like my number, I think my
- 53:05number is like 719. So I'm, I, I could be like the
- 53:09719th like fast. I don't know how because like
- 53:153041, like there's so many guys that are going to be faster.
- 53:19There's 16,000 in the race for 10K which is pretty crazy.
- 53:22That's cool. Yeah.
- 53:25It's a shame they are releasing people in different waves like
- 53:29it couldn't be a messed up. Yeah, I know.
- 53:32It's just the same thing with Japan, but it's probably
- 53:36probably makes sense in case. Just get through congested,
- 53:40yeah. Yeah, and someone could fall and
- 53:41that's like just a massive pile up.
- 53:44But yeah, whilst we're here, let's do the elite fields
- 53:47because they are released. We've got Almgren taking a swing
- 53:51at his own European record of 2653.
- 53:55He's the second seed behind Edwin Kirgat.
- 53:58He's got APB of 2646 and working down.
- 54:02There's then an Ethiopian guy who's also sub 27, a South
- 54:06African guy, sub 27, Isaac Kameli, who was the bronze
- 54:10medallist. Tokyo in the 10,000 meters this
- 54:12year is in there, so we know he can run a good 10K.
- 54:16Owens countryman Efrem G Day is in there.
- 54:19He's the current national record holder.
- 54:21They might be looking to lower that, you reckon?
- 54:23Owen, 2726. Yeah, him or maybe some of the
- 54:27other lads who are on that Euro Cross team, like there's a group
- 54:30from there that are super, super fit at the moment.
- 54:32So the Irish record could go down, a lot of them looking for
- 54:36that Euro standard, which is 2750.
- 54:39So yeah, maybe start off around that pace and hopefully kick it
- 54:43down. Is that national record?
- 54:46Is that 10K on track that get a 26.95?
- 54:50And you don't normally go to the 100th unless it's on the track,
- 54:53right? It is because below him is
- 54:56listed the male caress and it says 2727 from Birmingham 2025
- 55:03and that's a 10K on the 10,000 meter time.
- 55:06So they must have just taken a seed time from track or the
- 55:09road. Yeah, because a male caress
- 55:13there 2727. Rory Leonard is the the road
- 55:17record holder of 2738 so I reckon a male is going to have a
- 55:23massive go at that because he paced, what was it, Valencia the
- 55:26other week and so he looks 5th. Sam Clifford representing
- 55:30Australia. Shit, that's an interesting one.
- 55:32It's going a long way. Yes and his his time is that
- 55:35road time the Australian national record 2734 which would
- 55:39that was that Tokyo speed race that is he did.
- 55:43That was short. Yeah, he.
- 55:46He didn't race so well at Zathapec.
- 55:48Few. He was at Zathapec a few weeks
- 55:50ago I think wasn't he? So it'd be interesting to see if
- 55:53he is in shape. Andy Butcher.
- 55:56What's he call himself? Bionic Butchy 2736 PB be looking
- 56:01to get somewhere back close to that Charles Wheeler as Dean
- 56:05Habs shit. That's the first time we've seen
- 56:07him since his 327 escapades earlier in the air over 1500
- 56:12meters. Wonder what he'll do over 10K?
- 56:15He's run 2744. That's crazy.
- 56:20That is crazy. He's a pretty solid dude, isn't
- 56:23he? Yeah, maybe 2.
- 56:25Ah, no, we'll leave him. It's a new year in yours.
- 56:29Yeah, he's a Dutch guy. He's super.
- 56:30Front holder. Yeah.
- 56:33Alfie Manthorpe after his Valencia half marathon finishing
- 56:38in the first brick and he do the same here. 2814 PB might be
- 56:42looking to break 28 minutes. You wouldn't be scared of
- 56:46saying. Hugo Milner's in there he was.
- 56:49He normally does Eurocross. Yeah, you know, he was
- 56:53originally, he comes from a tribe background as well.
- 56:56And then he used to, I remember. Yeah, he used to destroy the
- 56:59cross country scenes and he. He's got Philippine Britain
- 57:04might ask for an autograph like I don't.
- 57:06I don't think he should be allowed in that leaf field.
- 57:08Be brutally honest. He ran 2840 in freaking 2019.
- 57:12Like that's way too long. Is there not like a cut off when
- 57:16you can stop using that PB? There normally is for a lot of
- 57:20races, but yeah, these these are dating back of farewell. 2019
- 57:25seems the earliest. Not when you have an Inger
- 57:27Britain surname though. That's what what's got him in.
- 57:31Well, I mean he is a great runner too, but is there a
- 57:34women's version of that? Yes.
- 57:36The women's elite start list is also out.
- 57:40Top seed an Ethiopian Lady Geb Gebzaher 2934 PB from Valencia
- 57:50last year. Well the top three seeds are All
- 57:54Ethiopian ladies 2930420940 3005 Irish Mccolgon ship.
- 58:00She could be your your biggest competition.
- 58:03Well, hopefully you won't see her current record holder 3019.
- 58:09She'll be hard missed, probably. She runs.
- 58:11She's a very unique running style, doesn't she?
- 58:14Yeah, she, she always looks like she's working a lot harder than
- 58:16she probably is. Yeah, but I let's just
- 58:19sympathize with you because that's just tall person
- 58:22problems. I think it's pretty a lot of
- 58:24limbs to manoeuvre. She's surrounded by like them E
- 58:28Africans. It's like Ethiopia, Ethiopia,
- 58:30Ethiopia, Great Britain and Ireland, Ethiopia and then all
- 58:33Kenya. Samantha Harrison, that's
- 58:36someone who kind of like broke onto the scene, I feel like a
- 58:38few years ago, like had a couple of big breakthroughs and then I
- 58:42haven't really seen much of her since.
- 58:43She's got PB 3051, so she's remarkably fast.
- 58:48I'm not sure whether she's close to that shape, but the fact
- 58:51she's on the start list would suggest so.
- 58:54There's so many Kenyans and Ethiopians.
- 58:58There's your woman, Alex Bell. Yeah.
- 59:00Yeah, shit, full circle this podcast.
- 59:04So she'd be looking to lower that 3131.
- 59:07So what, 1523 the other day. I mean, perhaps she's doing that
- 59:14on tired legs, so and she didn't tape her so yeah, she could be
- 59:17in good shape. So 31 hopefully.
- 59:20Then there's more. There's more Brits.
- 59:22Izzy Fry, Abby Donnelly, Alice Goodall and Hannah Irwin.
- 59:28Really does attract a lot of Great Britain, Northern Ireland,
- 59:34Ireland pet folks over, doesn't it?
- 59:37The thing with this is like there's actually not many fast
- 59:4010K road races. I feel like Australia is spoiled
- 59:43to all these fast 10 KS whereas over here there's actually not
- 59:46that many. And just the way it lines up in
- 59:48the season, it's such a good opportunity to get a standard
- 59:51for let's say COM games or Europeans.
- 59:54So that's why all them are trying to hit it.
- 59:57Yeah, like those who Rd. racing scenes really target around 10K
- 1:00:00and half marathon marathons, but.
- 1:00:03They don't have 5K to five mile. There's not really anything.
- 1:00:07So it's it's interesting the difference.
- 1:00:11Catholic with anyone in Ireland do they?
- 1:00:13Do you go to Telford or Trafford?
- 1:00:1510K is no. Are they track or Rd.
- 1:00:19A few people would go over, let's say it's a Telford one.
- 1:00:22There was a little Irish group went over and like I was like 6
- 1:00:25people and, but, and then before Christmas there was a fast 10K
- 1:00:31and France. I know a couple of hours went
- 1:00:33over to that. But it's just like knowing about
- 1:00:36them. Like there's so many Rd. races.
- 1:00:38It's like hard to actually find. Like I'm trying to look up like
- 1:00:41fast 5 KS for the summer, like on the track and like you sort
- 1:00:44of need to know what you're looking for to find it.
- 1:00:48It's like, yeah, there's just too many and there's not one
- 1:00:51website. There's like, oh, fast 10 KS
- 1:00:54under, let's say 31 minutes. There's like or fast 5 KS under
- 1:00:5815 minutes. There's like, yeah, you have to
- 1:01:00really know or have like an in. Yeah, you have to really put
- 1:01:04your market research in there to find the right race, right?
- 1:01:07Next one on the list is Houston Half Marathon is also next
- 1:01:11Sunday and they've recently released the elite fields for
- 1:01:13this. So couple of cool names jump out
- 1:01:15here. Galen ROP, Cam Levens in amongst
- 1:01:20many others. Read Fisher, Rory Linklater, the
- 1:01:22usual suspects. Peter Lynch representing Island
- 1:01:26over there can go Suzuki for a Japanese representation.
- 1:01:31And very interestingly, Hab Tom Samuel might sound random while
- 1:01:35mentioning him because he represents Eritrea.
- 1:01:38He won National Cross NCAA cross country this year for the first
- 1:01:44time. He has PBS of 13 O 42651.
- 1:01:48So based on the PBS of the guys listed in the start list, I
- 1:01:53probably should have read them out.
- 1:01:55The top seed has got APB of 59 O 9 Hab Tom's 10 KPB of 2651.
- 1:02:02If he's anywhere near that shape and we know what he's just done
- 1:02:06at the NCAA's, he could be a shout to win this race.
- 1:02:10Does he break 60? If I'm yeah, I think he breaks
- 1:02:16sixteen wins. If I'm, if I'm, if I'm picking
- 1:02:20someone in that field, I'd pick him, right?
- 1:02:24You'd have to say so, unless it's someone who comes from the
- 1:02:27clouds. Like, there's no one here.
- 1:02:30Like a largely domestic field really, isn't it?
- 1:02:33Yeah, surely he just sits and then just burns them.
- 1:02:39Like he's super fast, he's super strong, he's just like an all
- 1:02:42rounder. Yeah, he's he'd be far.
- 1:02:45He close better than them. He's ceiling should be better
- 1:02:48than them. But he's never run the distance.
- 1:02:50So it makes sense that he would get a seat at least early,
- 1:02:53right? I mean, I text Raff yesterday
- 1:02:57and saying have Tom's making his half marathon debut and he said
- 1:03:02we'll be his bestest. Like he's he's got a phenomenal
- 1:03:04threshold. So he is very open about about
- 1:03:08this as well. So I think is he looking to
- 1:03:12transition to represent the USA or is he going to be air train?
- 1:03:18I don't know. I don't have a, a take on it.
- 1:03:20I, I know that there was barriers when he because he's
- 1:03:23qualified for Eritrea for previous championships, but not
- 1:03:26being selected to participate. So I could understand if there
- 1:03:30was a motivation to, to move. But I think he's only been in
- 1:03:34the US since because he ran. He came from Eritrea in the Iran
- 1:03:38Bathurst World Cross and then went over to college to New
- 1:03:42Mexico. So he hasn't been in America.
- 1:03:45I don't know what their eligibility, how it works around
- 1:03:48citizenship, but he's been there for what, four or five years,
- 1:03:51three years, four years? I mean, for context, the US
- 1:03:55record is condom answers of 5915.
- 1:04:02So yeah, just keep our eyes on those results.
- 1:04:05May imagine, huh? They'd definitely be claiming
- 1:04:09them. Like if he broke the record and
- 1:04:12then switched allegiance to America, would that record be
- 1:04:16American then? I'm pretty sure like didn't
- 1:04:18Bernard Legat going off paste here but like I thought he used
- 1:04:23to run for Kenya before he then started running for America in
- 1:04:26his junior years but I don't think anything translates over.
- 1:04:30Yeah, you wouldn't imagine so for the half buddy run, Yeah.
- 1:04:33No, no way the the was it to the guy was seven time world half
- 1:04:41marathon champion was he was in the breaking 2 project is it.
- 1:04:46Tedesi. Yeah, yeah, he was the half
- 1:04:51marathon goat for a long time. Presurf.
- 1:04:53She's the 8:23. Yeah, he held the world record.
- 1:04:56So I don't know. I don't think that goes.
- 1:04:59Second is 5921. He could get go into second from
- 1:05:05the women's point of view just to go over that quickly.
- 1:05:09There is a couple of Ethiopians, as always, Gabriel Salima,
- 1:05:15Kenyan cheer, cheer. Plenty of Americans.
- 1:05:19No one's really jumping out at me, to be honest with you.
- 1:05:21There's a breast, Lauren McNeil. Not sure who she is, to be fair.
- 1:05:26So yeah, eyes on the men's field there.
- 1:05:28I think I went got myself a new pair of shoes this week.
- 1:05:32I so exciting. Reached out for the Vomero Plus.
- 1:05:38Good show, eh? Yes, it's nice.
- 1:05:41After wearing bastard 1080s it felt so good to put them on.
- 1:05:47Man there, there's a lovely pop to them and the boys on inside
- 1:05:51running, they give it you the year.
- 1:05:54Yeah, that's what Bully tipped me over the edge.
- 1:05:56So I was, I was already like wanting to go and buy a shoe
- 1:05:59that day. And then I listened to it that
- 1:06:01that morning, and I was like, oh, it's a sign.
- 1:06:04Yeah, no, they know. Thinking too.
- 1:06:05About running shoes anyway. And where'd you get?
- 1:06:07It well, yeah, I knew that Nike had that they had 30% off like
- 1:06:12as a Boxing Day sale. So it was $184, which is about
- 1:06:18£95. Yeah, that's good man, huh?
- 1:06:23So it's decent pickle. It's taken me all the willpower
- 1:06:26in the world not to buy shoes because you see them for Cho so
- 1:06:30cheap and I'm like, oh, I will eventually need this.
- 1:06:33Yeah, financially it's not smartest choice.
- 1:06:37They have a decent thing in store in that.
- 1:06:39Nike here as well. It's like spend $500, you get a
- 1:06:42$50.00 gift card. So that's like you.
- 1:06:45Have to spend 500. Yeah, but it's like 2 pair of
- 1:06:49shoes which over the course of say six months, you'll do it and
- 1:06:52then randomly you go and you get a few pairs of socks or
- 1:06:57something with your little gift card or $50 off, maybe a.
- 1:07:00Hat Yeah, a nice singlet. Lastly, well cross countries
- 1:07:06next week. I'm not going to do too much of
- 1:07:08an in depth preview because I'm really done the prep for it.
- 1:07:12I think France, Ethiopia and the USA may be the strongest
- 1:07:17contenders there in terms of the team results for the medal on
- 1:07:22the men's side. No, Kenya.
- 1:07:25I don't know if they've taken a particularly strong team given
- 1:07:29the Kenyan turmoil, but who knows, I could be eating my
- 1:07:32words this time next week. They have to be running.
- 1:07:35They have to be running now. Them good runners now.
- 1:07:37A lot of them are locked up. Nah, I don't know.
- 1:07:41Convertible just. Whenever they, yeah, whenever
- 1:07:44they came to National Cross, they're all World Cross.
- 1:07:47They're always very good, so I'd be surprised if they don't win.
- 1:07:52That would be my tip. It makes it'll make a good recap
- 1:07:56episode anyway, because then we have all the results out in
- 1:07:59front of us. It's easy.
- 1:08:01And Chabat in the women's side. Chabat is she's apparently she's
- 1:08:05taking a year off like I've presumed to have a child.
- 1:08:09Yeah, that seems to be the narrative.
- 1:08:12So she's just cleaned up last year, taking 2 gold medals and
- 1:08:15gone. You know what?
- 1:08:16It's time to have a kid. Fair play.
- 1:08:19Sensible decision and if we're going by the Australian women
- 1:08:23and how they come back after having kids, Chabet will run
- 1:08:26like 1330 in the 5K when she comes back.
- 1:08:30That Mom strength. Yeah.
- 1:08:33This is could be a whole nother topic on a whole new episode,
- 1:08:37but we probably need some women for it.
- 1:08:38But just to acknowledge, it's it's probably hard for women to
- 1:08:43like when the professionals to plan their like careers and
- 1:08:47their calendars whilst thinking about trying to have kids during
- 1:08:50that period. I was going to comment on the
- 1:08:52exact same thing, like the complications of being able to
- 1:08:57be ready to give birth to children and then the actual
- 1:09:00birthing process and then postpartum like incredibly hard
- 1:09:04on the body and on the person. And so like it's so much harder
- 1:09:08than a, than what men have to deal with.
- 1:09:12And I thought didn't, was it World Athletics or the IOC
- 1:09:16really create some sort of fund where women who successfully
- 1:09:21return or have picked previously competed in Olympic Games,
- 1:09:24looking to return, get some sort of funding.
- 1:09:26So sounds like there's some sort of financial aid and some sort
- 1:09:29of acknowledgement of that, which is good.
- 1:09:32I think that might be an Aussie only incentive, you know, fair
- 1:09:35play to the Aussies. Would.
- 1:09:37Like sponsors drop them, the sponsor couldn't drop them
- 1:09:41because when you think about they're going to be out for like
- 1:09:43the guts of I'll just say six months more.
- 1:09:47More. Like sort of half year, yeah.
- 1:09:51Like what sponsors ever drop? Like it would be totally unfair.
- 1:09:56It's probably natural that it's kind of written into women's
- 1:09:59contracts because I guess it's been going on forever, so they
- 1:10:03know how it kind of works. Dean has some shit shirt on.
- 1:10:09Looks like he's going off. He's off to watch some T20
- 1:10:12Scorchers. I am a scorcher at the
- 1:10:17Scorchers. Any chance of what?
- 1:10:21What's like the trophy called the BBLB?
- 1:10:25BL Title. Any chance of Scorchers
- 1:10:27finishing top of the ladder? They have a pretty rich history.
- 1:10:30They pardon the palm, but they bet above there they're average.
- 1:10:35They're, you know, they they do pretty well.
- 1:10:37So yes. What's the is it Mitch Stark?
- 1:10:42Is he the the main guy? Mitch Marsh.
- 1:10:45Mitch Marsh. Mitch Marsh Yeah, I was watching
- 1:10:48the other night. He whacked 100 or something
- 1:10:51pretty convincingly. Yeah, I still want to get around
- 1:10:55good all rounder. Sure what you want in Big Bash.
- 1:10:59Do you know it's been massive over here?
- 1:11:00Well, what I've gotten into this Christmas, New Year's, the
- 1:11:04darts. Oh yeah, Luke.
- 1:11:07I hate him. Boys, it's savage, the skill
- 1:11:11like we bought. We've a dartboard out in the
- 1:11:13garage I'm bought a set of darts for and Oh my God it's so hard.
- 1:11:18How's Luke Littler? Isn't he abusing?
- 1:11:20Didn't he say something about like because they're all Jing
- 1:11:22him and he's saying you pay for my, you pay my wage?
- 1:11:26You buzz boys, the mental like will pair you have to have in
- 1:11:30your mind like the crowd are just absolutely whacked and
- 1:11:33they're just like when you have an important shot, they're like.
- 1:11:36Oh. I do my head in.
- 1:11:39They're just, they want you to fail, but then they love when
- 1:11:42you hit a good shot. It's like just people dressed up
- 1:11:45in costumes, like in the bollocks behind you.
- 1:11:47I don't know how they do it. Look at the contrast between
- 1:11:51that and golf. Like when people playing, taking
- 1:11:54a golf shot, it's like has to be silence.
- 1:11:57But again, live golf change that.
- 1:11:58Your man Littler got £1,000,000 or €1,000,000, I don't know for
- 1:12:02winning that last night. You know, you know how we give
- 1:12:06Kenyans a bit of a grilling when it comes to age, potential age
- 1:12:11falsifications? That Luke Littler, how's he He
- 1:12:14looks 40. He looks older than me.
- 1:12:16He's 18, yeah. Get out of that.
- 1:12:19He's used to being burst in a bar.
- 1:12:23Smashes Donna Kebabs in. But he is so good at hitting
- 1:12:27them darts. Oh my God, it's crazy.
- 1:12:30Yeah. Like your man, they're averaging
- 1:12:32over 100 each set. And like your man was playing
- 1:12:36good, but later just wasn't giving him a chance.
- 1:12:38It was so good. He loves United though, and it
- 1:12:42rattles me. Yeah, and you're on angry
- 1:12:45gingers there as well. The FIFA streamer, That was a
- 1:12:48quiz question the other day in the Good Weekend quiz.
- 1:12:52Yeah. Who is angry Ginge?
- 1:12:54I'm a slab as well. Angry Ginges and YouTube Diaries
- 1:12:59contender, isn't it? Could.
- 1:13:02Be. Shit, we haven't done a double
- 1:13:04trouble. This could be two weeks on the
- 1:13:06bounce, New year, new US. But the listeners love it now.
- 1:13:08And have you got anything for us?
- 1:13:11Oh my God, you put me on the spot here.
- 1:13:14Well, I said prize money for the major categories.
- 1:13:18Yeah, true. I don't know if that one
- 1:13:20listeners let us know because you could be there could be some
- 1:13:23of the the age group contenders amongst listeners who may
- 1:13:26strongly disagree with that, however.
- 1:13:29No. OK, let me just rephrase.
- 1:13:31I'm not against it. It's just I feel like if you win
- 1:13:33the total outright race, you maybe should just get like maybe
- 1:13:38a sandwich or something as well. I don't know.
- 1:13:41Yeah, shouldn't be equal to the the 1st place prize.
- 1:13:45I don't think that's a double trouble.
- 1:13:47Surely that's just like standard.
- 1:13:49Common sense, yeah, Yeah. Would you want to go out to
- 1:13:52triathletes again, Ryan? You've already done me dirty
- 1:13:56enough with that. I love the triathlete community.
- 1:14:00I'm almost part of it. Give given they're almost the JB
- 1:14:05National record holder for the marathon, you probably can't go
- 1:14:07too hard anymore, can you? Yeah, even he.
- 1:14:11Trained like a runner. This This is Owen's angle.
- 1:14:14He trained like a runner, right? For six months.
- 1:14:18Yeah, for a year. He don't blend it to start a
- 1:14:21year. Versus blokes that have trained
- 1:14:23their whole lives and he's done it for six months and he paid
- 1:14:26them all balmo. And doesn't my have a question
- 1:14:30mark asterisk? Yeah, he's done so well to
- 1:14:33protect that because I feel like that question mark doesn't
- 1:14:36extend out into the, like, general community, only like
- 1:14:40serious track and fail fans are aware of this question mark.
- 1:14:43What's the Sermi? Exactly.
- 1:14:46To everyone else's Sermo. Right then.
- 1:14:49That'll be yours, boys. We'll speak this time again next
- 1:14:52week. I wouldn't go well.
- 1:14:54Good luck, have fun. Thank you very much lads, enjoy.
- 1:14:57Letter it look. None.
- 1:16:32The.
