- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, folks.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the episode of Film Study.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: This is Kendrick Music.
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: That's time for Camp Notes from the first day, July 29th of, 2026, and a beautiful day for camp.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: Well, a temperature is in the high 70s, might have touched 80 today in Owings Mills, but it was a really nice day, cool breeze overcast guys, and some great news, and really great news.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: The first truly great news is off season.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: is that the ravens have nom-day matted BK off the PUP list, the published and he was there in uniform today.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: He did some conditioning on the side, wasn't there for terribly long, but just that he was there meant that he had passed the team's physical, just the mentor confirmed that in the in the podium time is an absolutely enormous step in the comeback to have him back on the field.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: He could not give an exact timeline on when he'd be practicing in full.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: Mentor did comment that he had some time to get back in football shape, but that didn't mitigate any of the elation from this.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's very happy to see him out of be gay back.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: And it was clearly the item from this practice.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody expected by the way for him to be off the pop list on the first day.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: The rest of the five are still there, including Travis Jones and John Jenkins, from the defensive line alone.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll see when the rest of them will come back, anyway, they have one back as fantastic news.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_00]: The only absentee for the day was Colleus Campbell, midtercited personal reasons at the podium talking about the tragedy been from and getting back into getting back ready to play football and what not, so they were going to support him in that.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: There's lots of focus as there had been last year in terms of the cadence and the play calls, going from the huddle, getting set, motion, clean step and get off and pre-stap defensive communication being an element of that as well.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: And to that end, they had these set and snap drills last year and there were differences this year in terms of how they ran them.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: But they weren't the same things where they ran two drills, one on each side of the field.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: For these, they were wearing helmets.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: Now, in some of the earlier OTAs, they didn't wear helmets.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: And the last year, they just did the get off.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: But this year, they probably went three or four steps into the play.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't throw passes.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: They did hand the football off.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: But then the whistle was blown before obviously any sort of contact.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: These are unpatted.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: and unpadded practice, so it was anything like that, but it was still more total action from the snap than we had seen in these previous cadence drills from last year.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: And there may be something that Declan Doyle is looking for in terms of scenes.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: We're that mentor is looking for for that matter.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: It could be offense or defense to see how the players react, take their first initial steps and make their reads as they move, but no presses are being thrown in any case.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think the primary reason is to try and build up continuity and how the team gets to the line quickly and avoid false starts all of the things that goes through their motion properly and gets off quickly.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: All right, Ethan Powsick.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: Now this was an interesting thing because a Powsick was there wearing his number 77 jersey, but notably he got fewer reps than Pinter.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: Danny Pinter was out there and he was really playing with the first team, I guess I would say.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's probably temporary.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: It may be a case that Powsick is just learning the offense and if I had to have a guess as to why they did it is that they don't want
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: post-6 lack of understanding of the playbook or of the perhaps even the cadence to disrupt those drills specifically, where Pinterest being here obviously for the last the entire off season program.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: So that is something that was a little surprising was to see that Pinterest is still the guy who's taking most of the snaps.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: It could have been, you know, simply for that reason.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, Gwen also got a few center reps. Dawkins that I saw was probably mostly left guard, so I don't see him in the center cop, to Schneemore now.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: The UDFA, I listed six UDFA hopefuls, but Dawkins is a guy I think who's probably on the outside looking.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: It could still be a backup center on the practice squad, possibly.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really see him as competing for a line spot at this point among the,
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: the top nine or ten for the Ravens, that group's getting very crowded by the way right now.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: And then Bullock remains on the NFI last, and if you haven't heard yet, I did mention this on other shows, but apparently that was appendicitis was the reason for it.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: But it's something as obvious you can take Cory time to get back, and I can't help but be fearful that does impact his chance to make the team.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: It probably also makes him a little bit.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: less desirable to other teams in terms of the risk of him getting poached and we still I think could see him back in a Ravens uniform at some point this season.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't think I certainly don't think it helps his chance to win the starting job by opening day.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: All right, enough of the center competition.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about Lamar Jackson.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: He looked extremely sharp today in both sevens and 11s.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll start the fact that there were no interceptions through nothing really close to an interception.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: There were few balls that were put into any kind of danger.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: One ball is thrown at a double coverage, not by Jackson.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think might have been behind me.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: That might have a judge, Jackson.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: Actually, now that
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: think about it.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: And then another ball was thrown at triple coverage by Skyler Thompson, which I want to talk about a little bit later.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: But basically Jackson was keeping the ball out of reach of any defenders, at least, which is something he started very well.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: In recent years, in particular, with very low interception totals.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: So that's been a, you know, big positive.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: He connected several times with Z-flowers.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: Looks like they never stopped, you know, throw into each other in the backyard, as far as I can tell.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: You know, a couple of connections with
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: That was really good.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: And Beatman was one of the guys who looked to Rific in this practice, so to flowers, by the way.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: But he looked very sharp and very shifty, getting down the field.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: They had one miss where Beatman went up very athletically for the football and just could not quite hold it in.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: Tipped it off the tip of his fingers and it went incomplete.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: But he had beaten, I think Barlan Humphrey, no, it's Nate Wiggins on that play, crossing.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: So he impressive on the last.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: I was the other thing I'd say about Lamar Jackson is there's a lot of facility he's showing with play action and he did some good things to get the defense off their spot.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: I was at watching practice with them the Iron Badejo and then he said point out one play where he thought that Lamar had done a wonderful job and
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: he'd gotten Jacobi Lane out in space between level two and level three and that it really was a play where something Jackson had done had clearly a free lane because he shouldn't be uncovered in that spot and it was a nice easy pitch and catch reception that I think could have gone a long way on that on that play.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's enough for Lamar Jackson and seven on seven got some individual plays.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson looked off the safety.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: I just talked about this play.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: A Huntley complete a 15-yard pass to Walker, Jackson completed a 10-yard pass to Bateman who beat Hawkins crossing.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: That was the first of a couple of connections with Bateman.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: Mark Andrews dropped on 40, a five-yard pass from Jackson Trenton Simpson was in tight coverage behind the play.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: He may have gotten a hand
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: on either Andrews or kind of disrupted the catch point in a way that made it more difficult for Andrews to haul in the football.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: In 11 on 11's, we had a completion from Jackson to Flowers, but I think it might be the very first play from Scrimmage.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: It was 15 yards between the Hashes, you know, beautiful, single cut run by flowers that looked really good in exactly what we hoped to see many, many times in 2026.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: And Neus Peoples had a pressure, Lamar threw in complete, or could through complete the Bateman for 15 yards, but he was pressured, he was in the backfield pressure, and Lamar as that throw was made.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: uh... tray Hendrickson had a stop on a run left by justice hill nice to see him playing some run defense in uh... uh... you know controlling that edge she's gonna have to do that some this year though i think you'll be is primarily in passing situations uh... skydler Thompson connected on two passes to crisp more in a three-place sequence and i had to look up at you know number seventeen of raster who's that remember him from camp and you know i feel good at the old number seventeen's and you go back a long way to you know tanta doss and players like that but
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's Chris Moore is back with a team, just recently resigned, made a 15-yard leaping catch between the Hashes for his first and then another 10 yards on a cross, but like it was probably between the numbers and the right hash.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, if you
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: to see him out there, going up for the football, like the days of old, I mean, a very, very nice thing.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: And Chris Moore, an older player, the ribs, probably rely on him more as a special teams player.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like a wider receiver, maybe an older guy.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: They keep on the practice squad, you know, as they have with Kirkwood and Miller and some other guys in the past few years, really good as a receiver today.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what that's very nice to say.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: uh... jackson debate in the incomplete pass with humpry trailing already mentioned that was fifteen yards by the left side line uh... we are really great-looking one-handed stab by gillery uh... he was unable to hold on to the ball as he contacted the ground but it was a pass from huntley that was out front of him and he went up to stab the football uh... seem to pull it in nicely but when he hit the ground the ball just just kind of
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: rolled out of his hand just an inch or two and it was incomplete and he kind of pounded the ground, but really nice play to knew the whole that in.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: We saw Marquis Robinson have a past defense from behind versus Octavian Smith.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: Marquis Robinson is one of the guys at Cornerback who's really trying to differentiate himself from the crowd and I think he's he's starting well here.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: Now he's playing with probably the third team I would say if he's facing Skylar Thompson on some of these or I think this was Thompson the through the ball and not not huntly but he's still getting reps and I expect to see him be a very significant player to watch during the preseason so we'll look forward to that.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: Derrick Henry ran hard through on a run right and knocked down a player.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: He kind of got in front of him.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I think he's got ascending a message that this is a true all camp and really last preseason as well or last camp as well.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: All offseason all of the OTAs and whatnot has been true.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: That you get in front of Derrick Henry at your own peril.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: And they had by on the field that he seemed to be doing ice bucket challenge, the Chris Johnson ALS thing and that that was nice to see that was after practice kind of we were enjoying podium time and just as that closed up, we saw him getting out of ice bucket and a lot of ice on the field that was left over from his interview there.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_00]: So TJ Tampa, a nice play to shut down a sweep by Lujante Wester, a physicality by Tampa.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: He worked his way through traffic to make the play.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: And that's something that Raven's obviously want to see.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: Some good downhill play there.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: We saw Skylar Thompson complete a screen pass left to Elijah, Tau-Tau-Liver and kind of third string running backwards number 34.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_00]: That was broken for a very big play.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I wasn't able to see the entire thing and I don't have the ability to review it, obviously, because we don't have to eat of these practices.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: But look, the play was fairly well blocked.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: It got about in space, and Thompson did a good job of getting rid of the ball under some pressure.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: So that was,
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: positive.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: Thompson threw an incomplete pass to Dayton Wade.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: It was a very deep pass kind of between the numbers and left hash, well down the field probably 35 yards or so.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: The triple coverage was from a doom, walters, and Jacoise, Jacoise Robinson's, you know, you hear three names like that.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: You know, those are really third team guys who were out there playing.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: But they actually covered up that play pretty well, probably an ill-advised throw from Thompson.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: But there does seem to be all court, all the three quarterbacks, seem to have a lot of trust for Dayton Wade to go get the football.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: And it's unusual because he's kind of a smaller guy, and he added a lot of, a lot of place he'd made,
- 12:41[SPEAKER_00]: during the OTA's in mini camp, particularly when we didn't have flyers and baitmen there for a lot of that.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: So a lot of times those guys were there in the building or even on the sideline, but they short-participating in 11s for one reason or another.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: And Wade was a guy who had really benefited from the extra reps. That's the only time I remember we'd getting a target today, of course it's possible I might have missed one.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson completed a 20 yard pass to flowers crossing flowers and beaten wagons and gotten all the way to the left side line.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: So that was a sweet pass as well.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: Tas Walker reached back to control a 10 yard catch between the hashes that came from Huntley and the fact that I mentioning Walker and Huntley is probably something that is not great for Walker.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_00]: Now you know obviously the Ravens are probably running a lot of 12 personnel and whatnot so you're seeing
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: two wide receivers and two tight ends in a lot of the formations that include Lamar Jackson or the plays that are running with Lamar Jackson.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: But I bet Tes Walker would like to be doing more to build that relationship with Lamar during camp and continue that right on into the season where I would think he would
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: get more opportunities than Jacobi Lane or Serat, who I didn't see Serhat at all today.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: Besides Keshe, Lukas Scott caught a 10-yard crossing route from Thompson.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: Lukas Scott, I've mentioned very slim down, probably ways between
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: 2016 to 265 right now would be my guess seeing it again today.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's a big guy played a 290 at Army offensive tackle and now he's a he's a pass catching Titan who can block and and it has a real chance to play for the Ravens this year at some point.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: He'd be the number 5 Titan right now.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: They may carry 4.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: Probably if you look at the upside and I talked about this on the UDFA episode a little bit Maybe like an Eric Tomlinson, could be a guy who gets averages half a target per game for an NFL career, but his primary use is as a backup tight-end and he looks like he really block and it's good to see him get an opportunity to catch the football did a good job in this particular case
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: a few of the stars on offense, we saw Zay Flowers had three runs in addition to several receiving opportunities as well.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: As a receiver, he got very good separation.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: As a runner, he's a player who his one-cut style is very adaptable to these jet motion.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: So while I would probably like to see a lot or less of
- 15:15[SPEAKER_00]: Flowers running Gadgetree behind the line of scrimmage and more of him affecting the defensive backfield down the field.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: Then I still see the value in it because flowers is a very special athlete in terms of making change of direction with the football in his hands.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, we all want him to watch a fumbles a little bit, but outstanding run our end receiver.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: Adam Randall looked really good.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: He cut well.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: He looks very explosive, hitting the whole.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_00]: I always talk about how difficult it is to really evaluate running backstrain camp, but I think we're seeing something very positive from Adam Randall.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: He looks like the number two running back to the Baltimore Revens right now.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: And when I say that, you know, Justice Hill is going to play passing down as probably, but if they really want to get
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: legitimate running opportunities for Randall.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: And once they do, and if Randall can hold up his end of the bargain as a passbocker, which has been something he's had trouble with in college, then I think there's a chance that Randall could be the number two back.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: And probably the guy can help the Ravens for longer than either of their other two, long-tenured backs in in terms of Henry and Hill.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: Talk about Chris Moore.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: He's obviously one of the stars the offense for his couple of catches on defense that weren't any Interceptions.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think that Mark East Robinson his PD puts him among the stars on defense and then Mike Green for two very nice plays containing the right edge He's up against Roger Rosengarten and he on the first play Contained Lamar Jackson forced him all the way to the sidelines on a scramble right and then on another He shut down just as Hill on a sweep to the right the whistle got blown
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: really when the hill was right at the line of scrimmage and green had the containment taken care of.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: Nice day for Mike Green.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: We'd of course like to see him more of him as a past rusher, but you know being able to play the run also something that Mike Green may need to do some of this year.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: The one guy who had a tough day, I have to mention because you have to have some balance in these things is Matt Hibner, he had a fall start, he bobbled his first target and was tackled behind the line of scrimmage, I'm not sure he would have been able to turn the play up field anyway, it looked like the play was well diagnosed.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: But it was a, it was a, it was definitely one where the Bible did not help things and then he Bobbled and dropped his second target by the right sideline.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: So not a great day for Matt and he is getting chances with Lamar Jackson.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if, if he'll, if that will continue every day or if they'll try and run more 11 and say, get a player like Des Walker in there.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_00]: But regardless, he does figure to be a guy who would get some chances with Lamar and, unfortunately, today was not a great day for him.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: At the podium, Jesse Mentor was first, he talked about the return amount of BKE, he said, it's still working progress to get him ready to play football, talked with the defense and the strides they've made in terms of communication.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: Very positive.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_00]: It is a, first of all, screamingly loud day today.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_00]: They had fans at attendance, the kids were there.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: They were loving every moment of it and it's great to see.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not, no negatives about that.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: One thing it does too is it makes it a little harder to hear what's going on in the field in terms of pre-snap communication.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: So that's a slight loss from it.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: They did, by the way, something you heard me complain about in the past, is the proximity of the autograph sessions to the podium areas such that you can't really hear the people who are speaking at the podium with the screaming going.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: They fixed that and now it's basically stayed down on a close to field 3 to sign autographs and the podium is all the way up in the elbow of the facility there and audio characteristics were good today for that anyway and we were able to hear.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: But the kids are great.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: We love having the camp atmosphere was at a 9 out of 10 probably today and they were really excited with every long pass as they should be catches by flowers and peatmen got everybody up and going so is a great camp atmosphere on this first day.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: He was asked about the first padded practice, and he said it will be when the rules allow, but stressed that the players also need to be careful ramping up and raining in, they're hitting during the first couple of padded days.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's a guy who understands taking care of his team, trying to get them to the season.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody asked him directly about hey,
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: You told us everybody'd be ready for camp and they're not at all ready for camp.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't going to be the guy to ask that, but you know, he's very cautious with players.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously he's very optimistic in terms of some of the things and there are still five guys on PUP even with Matt at PK out today.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_00]: and so that's what that is.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: He was asked about clock management and fourth-thounds.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, he, Charlie Gilman, who was their new strategy guy, has studied situations and had meetings with the all the coordinators and mentor.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: to talk about individual situations.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_00]: But he brought up a point that I think is definitely true that it's very difficult to recreate the urgency of those game situations in a practice format.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_00]: And so, D-run 11 consecutive fourth down plays of a similar type, and he's not saying that, this is my self-assession.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: It may be very difficult to understand the urgency of that, and D-run the, if you're,
- 20:43[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to run a push push, say, I'm forth down, would you be able to do that the same way?
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: Or could you have, you know, Andrews out there taking the snap to do it anyway?
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: Talk about the difficulty there.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: We still don't have a sense of just how aggressive he'll be, but he said something interesting today that I think points interestingly in that direction.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: He said he learned a lot about such situations in 2017 to 19, when he was here previously with the Ravens Under Hardball.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: And he said the ravens were well ahead of the curve in terms of going forward in that era.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_00]: And that's definitely true in the early of the March action era.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: They went forward a ton, particularly in 2019, and they were very successful in fourth-down.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: And it's one of the things about Harble that was interesting is that
- 21:28[SPEAKER_00]: The Ravens, as they became very, very dominant in the 20s, and particularly in 23 and 24, they probably gambled a little bit less with fourth and short was it was just a very common thing to do.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: We think back to the 2019 seasons, there's a number of great fourth downplays, but I'll take you right back to that Seattle game where fourth and two from the eight yard line with a game tied at 13, Lamar was in there with every,
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: Big player on the team is 0.32 formation and basically had had no wide receiver on the field and no small back and they ran the ball right on a QB power play and cut it or touched down on that play.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: So one of the ones that I really remember, if you remember before that play, they went to the sideline and
- 22:17[SPEAKER_00]: Carbo asked Lamar, if you wanted to go for it, and Lamar asked Yanda.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think?
- 22:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, kind of thing.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_00]: And Yanda, you know, he did the best thing he could to put that decision right back on Lamar and says, yeah, you know, kind of thing.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: And always his reaction after, you know, such place was that, well, that's my quarterback was going on fourth and one against the chiefs in winning the football game or in that game against Seattle.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh,
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: I was loved that about Yanda and it was very clear in that early Jackson era, it's just how much reverence there was that Lamar had for Yanda at that point, but you know, great player and, you know, the nice to see midter get back to more aggressiveness on fourth down so I hope that's coming.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_00]: The March action was at the podium next.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_00]: It was asked if the urgency to win the Super Bowl is there.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: He said, yeah, it's growing with his age and his years in the league.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_00]: He had very positive comments about Rashad Bait when he says running fast, great routes.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: Baitman just looked very slippery.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_00]: He is a, he's a lot of wiggle getting to the top of the route.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: and then he has even more sometimes after the defender is in a trail position.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: And so he tracks them all very well by the way.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: So that's a good statement characteristic and it's I'm sure it was frustrating to him for that for the year or so and in 23 when when the law was overthrowing him a lot they didn't really seem to have the chemistry to you know it's a trust him to go get the football.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: But then in 24, he turned it around and had that magnificent season and one of the things you see and looking back from tape of that year is just how well he attracts the ball, but he also can show a wiggle to the defensive back who's trailing him to throw him off from the direct line of the trail and oftentimes when the play is developing or it's extended Lamar may have told him to go a particular way, he'll wiggle left wiggle right and all of a sudden
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: as he thinks, statement is tracking the football on him towards in that direction.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: He may peek into the back field at that time and that's something that just I think really underappreciated about paint and the route running.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's a ton of before and you know, before he gets to the top of the stem, what he can show in terms of wiggle that defensive back to get him move wrong.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's the best on a team at that, but how much he could do later in the
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: The Lamar Jackson saw the podium talk about the centers.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: He said they're mentally sharp.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: They're identifying the Mike Lineback or calling out the defenses and he said he could not come in on blocking yet since they hadn't been at pads.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's absolutely correct.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_00]: Love to hear it.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's talked about meeting with Jesse Minter now.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_00]: This is really interesting to talk about how the defense.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_00]: sees him.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so mentor as a defensive coach as to try and defend Lamar in practice.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: So you kind of look through the eye of the defense to see how is it that they see the Lamar and they try and deny space to him.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_00]: Those kind of meetings I think will be exceedingly valuable.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: They could it could be big results and
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: If we're looking for the next thing, Lamar can bring to the field, that might be just it, is understanding how the opposing defense looks at him now.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's been very slick looking in other ways so far on this first day of camp, most notably, but even during OTAs as well in terms of handling play action or what I think this is very positive.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: So he talked about,
- 25:53[SPEAKER_00]: Declan Doyle, a little bit, called him a wizard again.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_00]: He said he challenges the team to get to the line.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: Scrimmage quickly, and out of the huddle, virtually everything about the offense he says is new.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_00]: And it doesn't seem to mind that at all.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think the players are not saying a way that we did this way last year.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_00]: That was specifically mentioned in terms of the defense.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'll get that in a comment by Kyle Hamilton.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_00]: They really are, you know, very much entrusting themselves to, you know, a scheme that Doyle is putting in place.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think the concerns over Doyle being a first-time play coil caller here at H30.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: really were tremendously overstated.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there certainly were concerns this all season.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not as non-zero in terms of responsibility in that way, but I think that having a young play call hang of a very different mind was good.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think the Raven's interview process really did a good job of therating out what qualities there were about
- 26:59[SPEAKER_00]: And I think he's very much got the players a year as far as I can tell.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: Cathedral in Kyle Hamilton was next to the podium.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: Jesse Minter runs a very positive glasses half-full camp.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_00]: Was one of the comments he makes.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_00]: It really takes care of the players.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: He liked that about him.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_00]: He said he liked the communication on defense.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's at a very high level pre-snap, especially.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: And he mentioned Jalen Hawkins, particularly in that comment.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: And he talked about how Jalen was calling out that the place pre-snap or the communication pre-snap like he'd been there for 10 years.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you said exactly 10 years, but he said he's been there for three years.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_00]: And that was very positive.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Jayden Hawkins is going to be the free safety.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: In a lot of ways, that's the eyes of the defense.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: You have your major communication players on your defense are going to be your free safety.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes you're slot cornering in the case of a handle to definitely your slot corner.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_00]: And you're in sight, you're Mike Linebacker.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_00]: Those are the three guys who are going to do the most.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_00]: Corners have less of an opportunity to do that.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_00]: Your strong safety might or might not, but he's a play.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's a make-the-play player, or being a robber, rotational player, whatever.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's not necessarily going to be in a position or he can be fixed in communicates easily.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_00]: So, and you do offensive linemen, just start there, looking backwards to really kind of tie defensive elements together.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_00]: So, it's really the Mike Lineback or the free safety in this lock corner.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: And the Raven seemed to have three very good communicators at those positions, so that's exciting.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: He said that Anthony Weaver really preaches communication and connection on the defense, so that's great to hear.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: He mentioned Omar Jackson looks very comfortable under center.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: Now, it's great to get Kyle Hamilton's view on what's good about Omar Jackson this game.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: He said a very comfortable under under center and his playfix are very natural.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: And those are very positive things because of safety in particular is someone who has to read keys off what that quarterback is doing and try and make read steps that are right you want to hear what real one had to say about this too.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's a question that likely will come up the first time that that he gets at the podium, which I think is this week by the way, but I'd be interested to hear his thoughts on that.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hamilton said there's no friction between coaches and players in terms of installing new stuff and in a way unlearning old stuff.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_00]: But he did say that the defense is essentially the same from the days of Ed Reed and Ray Lewis with a few tweaks.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_00]: Now,
- 29:21[SPEAKER_00]: football is not that complicated again.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: That's what something Brian Billeck always used to say, is that the camp is too long for the veteran players, because football's just not that complicated.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_00]: And that was part of his thinking behind really running a what people called camp cream puff for Jordan, that they would appreciate that.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_00]: Well,
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's very true, the positionless football thing is overstated.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_00]: The rapists play very standard positions in terms of where they're going to be at.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: What they don't always do standardly is they rotate out of those into other responsibilities.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_00]: They play match-up zones.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: They can differ by side and they did that before mentoring them.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_00]: God here and they rush the quarterback and they can rush the quarterback from anywhere.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_00]: They've been super aggressive about that at times in the past.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: And they've been moderately aggressive kind of at the least in terms of that.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of that depends on the flexibility the pieces you have, but they, you know, they play a deceptive brand of football, but I wouldn't call it positionless.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: That's not, that's not the terminology I would use to describe it.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_00]: And the fact that guy will handle this is the same defense from the days of Ed Reed and Raid Lewis is really a comment in that direction.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_00]: Dean P's probably was the least aggressive in terms of past-first things.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_00]: The defense of 40 years, the Ravens have had.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_00]: He was here for six years, between 2012 and 2017, and 2012 happened to be the last year, both at Reading Ray Lewis.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, if you're talking about all these years, it's been the same defense.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_00]: You really are talking about.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_00]: guys who use varieties of differences in aggression.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_00]: You know, obviously the switch from from peas to McMartendale is enormous in terms of the aggression.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think we're going to see a different type of very deliberate aggression from Jesse Minter and I think it's going to be a lot of fun to see exactly what that looks like during the regular season.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_00]: We can make some positions about it, but I don't think we'll really know until the regular season.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_00]: sets off when we're able to count some things and really look at how mentor brings pressure, how often he wants to try and do it with forward, deceptively versus not deceptively, etc.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_00]: Last comment by Kyle Hamilton was a very interesting one.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_00]: He says that he thinks Malachi Starks could break out and be the best safety in the league.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_00]: And he didn't put a time frame on it.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he might have said within a year or two.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_00]: But either whatever he had said about it, it's very interesting that the best safety in the league is saying that Malachi Starks could break out and be the best safety in the league.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: Extremely high praise.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: And I would agree that Malachi Starks who was playing a little bit out of position last year at free safety
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: Is a better bet to have a, is a good bet to have a much better season this year at strong safety, which is more of a natural position for him and more of a go make a play position where I think Malachi Starks is, you know, outstanding instincts and ability to take away routes as a robber or make downhill plays.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_00]: like it's the run or against short passes, any of those things will play very well.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_00]: Also, we'll put him in a position to rush the pass or a little bit more often this year than he did last year.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_00]: So Hamilton is very positive on Malachi and I think that's a great thing and Theravis need that safety position to be the
- 32:37[SPEAKER_00]: the anchor and the backbone of this defense.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: They have good players at other positions at safety, they have great players and that group really needs to turn out to be the unit that I think carries and is the backbone, like I said, of the Ravens defense.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's it for the first day of camp.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_00]: Great day.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_00]: Great to be out there again and watching practice and lots of good news with not the back of the field.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for listening everybody.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_00]: Please send any questions you have to film study mail bag at gmail.com.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's easiest place for me to collect them and I'll talk to you soon.
