- 0:53have a conversations podcast and as an example, my guest a Zeus Rodriguez,
- 0:59long time served this country as a member of the United States Border Patrol as
- 1:03an agent and jeseus welcome, Thanks as always, appreciate you serving the country.
- 1:07How are you you certifying yourself? Good morning, I'm doing well.
- 1:12I guess. I guess. It's cool where you are compared to what's happening
- 1:15to the to the east of you. We're gonna hit We're hitting crazy temperatures
- 1:22over here, but you have the dry heat over there. Yes, we
- 1:26have the of the dry heat it's only one hundred and probably eight, but
- 1:30no humidity. There you go, there you go. I used to live
- 1:34in it all the time. J Zeus. Tell me something, if you
- 1:37were, if you were a new a young man looking for a career,
- 1:44would you be looking at the US Border Patrol right now if you kind of
- 1:48had that mindset, or would there the state of things as they are as
- 1:53border policy is right now, would it would it persuade you to choose another
- 1:59career path? Um? I don't think so now. I always um my
- 2:05always, My goal was always to get into law enforcement and the beauty of
- 2:09the of the border patrol believed or non customers that you're out in the in
- 2:15the desert, you're out in the in the mountains, in the northern borders
- 2:19sectors. So if you like being outdoors and and you like in some sectors
- 2:23and in some stations they have you know, like to the northern border they
- 2:27may have achea snowmobiles, and of course they have a TVs, and like
- 2:30on the southern border, there's a lot of stations that use both ATV's,
- 2:35motorcycles, horses. So there's a lot of varying various things that you can
- 2:38get yourself, um and traded and then work and as your career starts to
- 2:44to progress them. It was always a good career. I you know,
- 2:47I missed a lot of the people that I worked with, But you know,
- 2:51the politics are always We're always part of it. Even when I first
- 2:53came in, it was it was, it was part of it, and
- 2:55we were under old ions. So that tells you a lot. Is Border
- 3:00Patrol facing the same recruiting problems that the Armed Services are facing. Yes,
- 3:08yes, um, they're having a hard time attracting agents to to sign up
- 3:15and to come and join the agency. A lot of it have to do
- 3:19and it's always been, it's always been this way that you have agency that
- 3:23apply from let's say the back East or even Midwest, and they have no
- 3:28family ties in the border areas like in Texas or California, Arizona, New
- 3:31Mexico, and so they don't have those familial sides. So it's hard on
- 3:36families, or hard on on young families to uproot everybody, everything and everybody
- 3:40they know and then move to let's say Aho Arizona, where there's really there's
- 3:46there's nothing out there, So it's hard, I mean, and so you
- 3:50have, you know, you have to have that special person that's and the
- 3:53couple has to be you know, in lockstep to to make that move into
- 3:59into some those areas. Yeah, is how if you were to pie chart
- 4:04and we were to just say morale right now based on the men and women
- 4:09you know that are still serving, how much of the morale is based on
- 4:14policy things they cannot do anything to control, how much of it is based
- 4:18on the actual challenges of the job, and how much of it is based
- 4:23on the pressures of it coming home. I think the morale and pressing was
- 4:30had hit rock bottom um towards last this year, at the end of this
- 4:34year and until last year, when you know, there was they were not
- 4:40getting the information that they were that they were being given on all these illegal
- 4:45aliens that were coming in, and so you could see it and in talking
- 4:47to the agents, you know, the morale was as at its bottom,
- 4:51it was hitting it was bottoming out. And in my conversations with a lot
- 4:56of the agents that would run into and talk to UM, I common home
- 5:00it has been what I had heard from my previous journeyment when I first started,
- 5:03that the pension and will swing one way for a while and they'll swing
- 5:06back the other way. So just do your job. And you know that's
- 5:10that's above our pay grade. We can't control that those policies and the decisions
- 5:15those policymakers make in DC, whether it's you know, it's a detriment to
- 5:18us and doesn't it affects us and how we do our job. So I
- 5:23think now what I've seen from the from the agencies that I think they've already
- 5:26kind of like and asked the strong our hands up in the air and said,
- 5:29okay, well, what else you want me to do? Now?
- 5:30What you know? What does it you want me to do? Coming up
- 5:35to twelve minutes after the hour, A sus Rodriguez US Border Patrol retired our
- 5:41guests this morning, Hey, is this You introduced me to something I didn't
- 5:46know about Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue. It's called bore Star that
- 5:53rolled out in nineteen ninety eight. Were you in the agency then or were
- 5:57you new to the agency when this thing came out? That was still if
- 6:01you talk to the old timers, that was still a trainee in nineteen ninety
- 6:04eight, I had already had almost five years in Yeah, still training you
- 6:11were still a rookie in their mind. Yeah, yep, I still was.
- 6:15I was a lot to learn, but yeah, they've been around since
- 6:17around that time, and they are they are a big service in the areas
- 6:21that they're that they're um that they're working because they are the MTS paramedics and
- 6:28they don't not only provide you know, um medical to to the ages,
- 6:32but to anybody accidents, uh, you know, you name it. They've
- 6:36been involved and they had and they still have I'm sure a technical mountain technical
- 6:44team that they go up there and that they need they get called on.
- 6:47They can go up there and and pull people down off the mountain that they're
- 6:51if they're injured. And so, I mean, it's it's a it's a
- 6:55rough it's a rough academy for those guys because they have to do a lot.
- 6:59But they're very dedicated group of guys and they do provide a very very
- 7:02valuable service and they see a lot of lives out there. Give us an
- 7:08idea of how these units are formed and then uh spaced out? Is there
- 7:14one bour Star unit per you know, uh sector or how does that work?
- 7:19Now? They have multiple units work through throughout the shifts and you can
- 7:24have them deployed to certain areas where there's a lot of traffic coming in,
- 7:29like right now we're looking at yesterday in the Yaho area, it was probably
- 7:34one hundred and twelve one hundred and thirteen uh air temperature. So they're out
- 7:39in those areas where you know you're you're either um the temperatures are extremely hot
- 7:44like that, or you're having a lot of rescues of illegals out there in
- 7:47the in the desert area. So they're out there kind of waiting and looking
- 7:53to see if they get called to respond to to rescues like any Like I
- 7:57said, even agents and and so agents can fall out just as much as
- 8:01in the legal alien can because you know, the humidity and or seeing the
- 8:05heat and then the lack of water that they may intake. So they're out
- 8:09there and they're out deployed to certain areas, and so they you know,
- 8:11they provide that that medical expertise out there. Hey, Zeus, I lived
- 8:16in Arizona for about twenty years. I know well the Arizona heat. I
- 8:18know well the deserts and the challenges that it presents. I'm just curious do
- 8:24traffickers care or do they do they try to get more people across the border
- 8:31when the weather's hot, knowing that there might not be as much resistance,
- 8:35or how does that factor in. Well, let's go back a step for
- 8:41us, and so back in the day, and I see when I was
- 8:43working, they would give them as veteran pills. The smuggles give them as
- 8:46veteran pills, which would make them really hyped up, and it would walk
- 8:52a lot faster to avoid you know, being apprehended. And of course in
- 8:56the desert our year, they would only carry like for the most part,
- 8:58they only carry like one gallon of water, and so they would walk,
- 9:01you know, you would have them walked twenty plus miles sometimes, so a
- 9:05lot of times you have them fall you know, fallen out or and or
- 9:09going into a medical emergency were you know, unforced. Some of them would
- 9:13just die, you know, because of the combination of all of that.
- 9:16And so no, there's no they don't care about them now pressing in today's
- 9:22um environment, the way it's set up from from from DC. Uh,
- 9:26you know, they they just come across the border, they find a find
- 9:31a road and walk it and they run into an agent and they just give
- 9:35up and so if you would, if you were to see them, what
- 9:39they would look like after let's say a day or two walk in the desert.
- 9:43Uh, you know, when I worked, they looked like they had
- 9:46gone through you know. I mean it was it was they were tired,
- 9:50they were run down. I mean it was it was you know, you
- 9:52had to give them water and and sometimes treat them medically and blisters in the
- 9:58whole nine yard. Today it's not even like that. They look like they've
- 10:03been walking in a nice cooler conditioning mall for about you know, like an
- 10:07hour or so. They don't look stressed out at all. And I Heearts
- 10:11Radio station ZEUS. ROD Radio spent more than two decades serving our country at
- 10:18the southern border. Is now retired from the US Border Patrol and joins US
- 10:24Jesus. We were just talking in the break about the Supreme Court basically handing
- 10:30a big win to the Biden administration. The ruling wasn't closed, it was
- 10:33eight one. It was US versus Texas found that states don't have standing to
- 10:39challenge the narrowing of immigration and customs enforcement. And I was asking you if
- 10:43stuff like that ever filters its way down to agents on the border. No,
- 10:50not really. I mean we're going our marching orders from from the administration
- 10:56and from our higher ups in DC and even from its down to the sectors
- 11:01and it goes from there. So you just basically or do whatever they're the
- 11:05directive is given to you. Um in previous administrations when we had those those
- 11:11uh, all these groups of people coming in and I'll go back to you
- 11:16know years where we had a lot of Brazilians coming in and they kept coming
- 11:20in because they were getting cut loose. And as soon as they stopped it
- 11:24and started sending them back to the Brazil and started deporting them formally deported them,
- 11:28the stakes you know, stopped. So you know, each administration that
- 11:33comes into power, does you know, does things a little bit differently.
- 11:37What about the state administrations, Zeus, We've we've loosely talked about Texas in
- 11:43Arizona primarily, and I'm just curious, based on any connections you have with
- 11:48with say, any agents or former agents that worked in the Texas or California
- 11:54sectors, what difference is there from state to state. Texas has been very
- 11:58proactive of sending the state National Guard down there, and Arizona has gone the
- 12:05other way with the new governor Katie Hobbs. How different is it from state
- 12:11to state? For you guys, it's different because you you have agencies that
- 12:16may um pull a vehicle over. And in some agencies they will call you
- 12:22and say, hey, I'm sitting on you know x amount of people,
- 12:26uh, you know, can you come and take them? And some agencies
- 12:30won't even both anyone do that. They'll just cut them loose, uh,
- 12:33you know. And in some instances they have to cut a loose because the
- 12:37agents are so busy up there that they can't get to that, you know,
- 12:41that vehicle stop and the system the sheriff deputy or the or the the
- 12:45trooper, and so they have to In a lot of instances they would cut
- 12:48them loose. At the height of of all this illegal aliens crossing pressing,
- 12:56some of the agents are saying where they're cutting vehicles loose on a nightly basis
- 13:00because they could not get to the number of vehicle stops that were being made
- 13:05and that people were being encountered, you know, and of course they're suspective
- 13:09of being illegally in the country. But the agent gets their determined that and
- 13:13then you know, they're illegal, but you know, the troopers and the
- 13:18deputies knew what you know, who they were dealing with naw instances, and
- 13:22so that's what they would call. Last thing I want to ask you about.
- 13:26I've got three separate stories sitting in front of me about Russian and Chinese
- 13:33nationals in record numbers at the southern border trying to get into the country.
- 13:37Focusing on the Chinese, a guy with the Gatestone Institute, a senior fellow
- 13:43named Gordon Chang, said the Chinese coming in are really disturbing. Packs of
- 13:48Chinese males, military age, unattached to family groups, pretending not to speak
- 13:54English, are likely saboteurs coming into the country for a first of war with
- 14:00Asia. Are you hearing anything about an increase in Chinese nationals coming in?
- 14:07Just thats what they say is getting hit pretty good with Chinese nationals, um
- 14:11and Uh. I think some of the some of the other sectors are getting
- 14:16hit with it as well. And you're right, and we're right. Most
- 14:18of those, most of what I've been told that they're encountering out there are
- 14:22single males, not only from China but from from other countries. There are
- 14:26the family groups, but a lot of them are all single males, all
- 14:28right, So tell me this just real quickly here as a matter of protocol,
- 14:33when let's say you and your your fellow agents are noticing this influx of
- 14:41this particular demographic and this particular nationality and they are absolutely enemies of this country,
- 14:48do you treat them any differently in terms of patting them down, looking
- 14:52for things, inquiring, um, is there anything that's handled in a different
- 14:56manner? How do you do a good They're search of them completely. You're
- 15:01looking for pocket trash, we would call it, looking for slips of paper
- 15:05or any kind of information. You're looking inside the loops of their belt by
- 15:07anything that they could hide anything. And then you, of course you would
- 15:11get the into agents involved, so they could be brief them and and you
- 15:16know, and go that route and try to pull up as much information as
- 15:20you can, you know about them and their motive, travel, how they
- 15:24got there, everything that you could use, you know that you could use
- 15:26to for information. But yeah, you would really do a very there throw
- 15:30search. I mean it's you're going inside their shoes and you're looking for a
- 15:35lot of for pocket trash, looking for anything that would help you, you
- 15:37know, identifying more tattoos, anything of that instrument that I always enjoy our
- 15:43visit. Jesus, thank you so very much. My best to you and
- 15:46your family. Okay, take care, sir, Thank you. Jesus Rodriguez
- 15:50with us this morning. Okay, story confirmed his sources. He's still very
- 15:56well connected down there. Just trust me when I tell you that they are
- 16:00encountering Chinese males singles in large numbers. Now, why would that be?
- 16:08Twenty seven minutes after the hour, It's The Morning Show with Preston Scott
