- 1:25Speaker 4: for SEC coaches all time, Bear Bryant, Pat Summit, Skip Bertman,
- 1:30Speaker 4: Nick Saban.
- 1:32Speaker 1: That's it.
- 1:34Speaker 4: And don't get me wrong, there are some great ones
- 1:37Speaker 4: that were left off there. I mean it hurt me
- 1:40Speaker 4: to not put Steve Spurrier on there, but he would
- 1:44Speaker 4: be on there on the football one okay with Bear
- 1:48Speaker 4: and Saban. The fourth would be a hell of a debate. Wow,
- 1:57Speaker 4: but yeah, Mount Rushmore just SEC football coaches coach Paul
- 2:04Speaker 4: Bear Bryant, coach Nick Saban, and coach the old ball
- 2:08Speaker 4: coach Steve Spurrier, who was on this show and said
- 2:15Speaker 4: he was not hired at Mississippi State. He said, evidently
- 2:17Speaker 4: they didn't like me. Remember what year that was, eighty
- 2:22Speaker 4: six is somewhere in there. He ended up at Duke
- 2:25Speaker 4: and then Florida. As y'all know, good morning, welcome in.
- 2:27Speaker 4: We would love to hear from you. We need an
- 2:29Speaker 4: out of bounds roll call right now. Six h one
- 2:32Speaker 4: eight eight five three seven seven six six oh one
- 2:40Speaker 4: eight eight five three seven seven six. You can find
- 2:43Speaker 4: us on X at bo bounds tweet to us, give
- 2:47Speaker 4: us your number of wins ole miss Mississippi State, Alabama, LSU.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Who do you sport? Who do you like? Who's your team?
- 2:54Speaker 4: Saints, Cowboys, Jihnts, Cleveland Browns, good reef, I'm sorry, NFL Chuck.
- 3:01Speaker 5: The Football Mount practice.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yeah, the Cleveland Browns.
- 3:04Speaker 3: The Football Mount practice, Coleman Hutsler, the football Mount practice.
- 3:08Speaker 4: According to Jackson Meadows, the New Orleans Saints first round
- 3:11Speaker 4: pick Jordan Tyson, who's now going to be sidelined at
- 3:15Speaker 4: least a few weeks with another hamstring injury.
- 3:18Speaker 5: The football Mount practice.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Jadeen Daniel's mom.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Possibly the football Mount practice.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Okay, so there we go. You want to throw anybody
- 3:26Speaker 4: else in. If you're an Arkansas razorback fan, you've had.
- 3:29Speaker 5: The football Mount practice.
- 3:30Speaker 1: For fifteen years. You should have never fired Brett Beilama.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Now you've been in the You've been out in the
- 3:36Speaker 1: wilderness longer than Mississippi State fans.
- 3:38Speaker 5: The football Mount practice.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Yeah, of course, Kentucky, what Mark Stoops did to you?
- 3:44Speaker 5: The football Mount practice?
- 3:47Speaker 4: Trying to think what else? Auburn fans, they definitely think
- 3:52Speaker 4: they've gone.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Through the football Mount practice.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Post Gus Mauson kind of like, yeah, is that fair?
- 4:01Speaker 1: That's a guy's name, Brian what New.
- 4:03Speaker 5: York Jets the football practice?
- 4:05Speaker 1: Ryan Silverfield, SEC Coach of the Year twenty twenty six.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Is that where you're going? Well, you want to go
- 4:10Speaker 1: ahead and throw that up on the board. Why not?
- 4:13Speaker 1: Twenty twenty six SEC Coach of the year. Are you
- 4:19Speaker 1: going Ryan Silverfield, the new head football coach for Dogs. Huh.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I ain't even heard him call him yet go Hoggs.
- 4:31Speaker 1: So I don't know.
- 4:33Speaker 4: If he had, I would have continued to pay Sam Pippen,
- 4:36Speaker 4: no doubt, one hundred K year. Well you just paid
- 4:40Speaker 4: millions to because he did. What a lot of coach
- 4:43Speaker 4: Larry Fedora, Sam Pitt You know you they have one
- 4:46Speaker 4: good year, you re up them and then it's like
- 4:49Speaker 4: Clark Lee, He's gonna be gone in the next couple
- 4:51Speaker 4: of years. No, but he won. So he's gonna get
- 4:54Speaker 4: fifty million and then they'll fire him and pay him out.
- 4:59Speaker 1: But no, that's fair.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Hey, Okay, Ron Silverfield, I don't know if he has
- 5:05Speaker 4: called the Hogs like this.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Go Hogs? Now you think he asked not like that? Okay,
- 5:15Speaker 1: not yet? All right?
- 5:18Speaker 6: Wow?
- 5:19Speaker 1: Why is their air still asking that question? Uh?
- 5:26Speaker 4: Can Old Miss? Is Trinidad good enough to get Old
- 5:29Speaker 4: Miss through LSU at Florida at Texas, Georgia at home
- 5:38Speaker 4: at Oklahoma maybe ten and two with that schedule? What
- 5:49Speaker 4: if you add what percentage would you give? Even knowing
- 5:53Speaker 4: that Ole Miss has top ten talent and Trinidad and
- 5:59Speaker 4: Lacy and the D line. Yeah, LSU at Florida at Texas,
- 6:06Speaker 4: Georgia at Oklahoma, and there's some other land mines. I
- 6:10Speaker 4: just went through the the big, big, and baddest on
- 6:14Speaker 4: your schedule right now. Your best opportunities to win are
- 6:22Speaker 4: your home games in that stretch of the biggest and
- 6:27Speaker 4: the baddest LSU at home.
- 6:28Speaker 1: And I mean, but this, this is the l Shue
- 6:34Speaker 1: at home, a Georgia at home.
- 6:35Speaker 7: It hinges on that one game, though I know one
- 6:38Speaker 7: game doesn't make a season.
- 6:39Speaker 4: September nineteenth, well for one school, okay, show. First of all,
- 6:45Speaker 4: you got to beat Louisville. I know you should. But
- 6:47Speaker 4: that's all great and good, right.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I mean, it's not like you're a twenty three point favorite, no, okay,
- 6:52Speaker 1: So all right, so we're going to assume you pull
- 6:55Speaker 1: away from Louisville, you win with trend add and that
- 6:57Speaker 1: defensive line, all right, fair enough, and Louisville breaking in
- 7:01Speaker 1: a new QB. Right, all right?
- 7:05Speaker 4: Then you have an exhibition game, sure, and then you
- 7:08Speaker 4: have LSU at home, which is where you're going. LSU
- 7:14Speaker 4: at home at Florida back to back is super super
- 7:19Speaker 4: difficult for several different reasons. One, it's Lsu and Lane
- 7:25Speaker 4: and all the hype and all that, and Lane and
- 7:27Speaker 4: Baker are really, really really good coaches. Slash oc DC's
- 7:31Speaker 4: all right, and you get a little bomp for being
- 7:35Speaker 4: at home. The talent may be a push.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I think some people would.
- 7:45Speaker 4: I think a lot of people actually outside the Old
- 7:47Speaker 4: Miss fan base would give Lsu an edge. And while
- 7:52Speaker 4: it's not a wide gap, there is a little one.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Then well Miss would argue, yes, but Trinidad is older,
- 8:02Speaker 4: the best returning quarterback and maybe the best decision maker
- 8:08Speaker 4: when you look at his touchdowns interceptions ratio last year,
- 8:11Speaker 4: which is a fair argument, and Lsu on the defensive line,
- 8:21Speaker 4: they're still in fact, I read another article yesterday about
- 8:24Speaker 4: these three freshmen. I don't know how many of them
- 8:26Speaker 4: are going to start, and I don't know what that's
- 8:29Speaker 4: I mean, that's kind of a catch twenty two. But
- 8:31Speaker 4: my question is early in the year, can Ole Miss,
- 8:37Speaker 4: if that group's trying to get up and running, can
- 8:39Speaker 4: all Miss take advantage of it? Trinidad ran for over
- 8:42Speaker 4: five hundred yards on the ground last year, and you
- 8:44Speaker 4: know what Lacy did, so can all Miss take advantage.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Of that early in the year.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Maybe that LSU defensive line three or four weeks later
- 8:54Speaker 4: is even better with these three super talented freshmen, two
- 8:58Speaker 4: from Louisiana, one that they went into Georgia and got.
- 9:04Speaker 4: He's a little on the smaller side, but I mean
- 9:06Speaker 4: it's not like he's two forties two seventy five. Maybe
- 9:08Speaker 4: more than that now, just something to think about. You
- 9:12Speaker 4: can find us on X at bow Bounds and uh
- 9:17Speaker 4: Ice Cold, Michelobultra and Wings at Martin's. At Martin's and Livingston,
- 9:22Speaker 4: that's a winning combination. And the Martins in Livingston collar
- 9:27Speaker 4: line is six OZHO one seven zero, seven thirty seven
- 9:32Speaker 4: fifty brought to you by Ice Cold, Michelo Vultra and
- 9:36Speaker 4: Wings at Martin's and Livingston. And they just expanded for
- 9:41Speaker 4: game day and it looks amazing. Mike de Tillier at
- 9:45Speaker 4: eight thirty.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Anybody else got any questions about any college jobs?
- 10:10Speaker 1: Is not a booster with a big enough blank check.
- 10:13Speaker 4: We are the out of bounds show ESPN one O
- 10:16Speaker 4: five down the zone. That'd be a rude awakening for
- 10:19Speaker 4: some sec alumps they think they run football programs.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Anybody else got any questions about any college jobs?
- 10:25Speaker 1: Is not a booster with a big enough blank check.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It's that is so delicious.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Oh man, good morning, Welcome in Out of bounds one
- 10:35Speaker 4: oh five nine The Zone ESPN powered by the Golden
- 10:40Speaker 4: Moon Casino, Vegas Style Sportsbook and Championship Golf at Dancing
- 10:44Speaker 4: Rabbit Golf Club. Hit it today, twenty four to forty
- 10:47Speaker 4: eight hours of fun with your friends. Pearl Riverresort dot
- 10:52Speaker 4: Com will be up there a good bit starting next
- 10:55Speaker 4: week or maybe Friday. But you gotta go out of
- 10:58Speaker 4: town today back to Mara and we'll see, but we'll
- 11:02Speaker 4: definitely be at pr R next week. Looking forward to that.
- 11:05Speaker 4: I think Mick Gillespie's heading there. Yeah, mister Bama Insider.
- 11:10Speaker 4: He was texting me last night and I think he's
- 11:16Speaker 4: I guess he's got a couple more weeks left of
- 11:18Speaker 4: minor league baseball with the Chicago Cubs Double A affiliate
- 11:22Speaker 4: Smokey's out of Knoxville. But he was like, do you
- 11:25Speaker 4: want to meet at Pearl River Resort on Tuesday? And
- 11:28Speaker 4: I was like, that could work out for for sure.
- 11:34Speaker 4: Let's see, Lee Dog says Mike Tomlin.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Was on fallon last night. Okay, all right, Tomlin, I
- 11:46Speaker 1: bet it was good.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Yeah, he's uh, I think he's going to be fun.
- 11:54Speaker 4: He doesn't really have a filter, and that's a good
- 11:57Speaker 4: thing for us. It's kind of like Lane. You know,
- 12:00Speaker 4: the guys who don't ever say anything are not interesting.
- 12:02Speaker 4: I mean, you know, Clark, Lee, Jeff Levy, Ryan Silverfield,
- 12:06Speaker 4: Will Stein, you know, what are we doing? But when
- 12:10Speaker 4: you get some bark, John Summerl's got some bark in him. Actually,
- 12:15Speaker 4: Alex Golish has gotten a little gotten a little barkie
- 12:20Speaker 4: at Auburn.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I like that.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Elko has been quiet and hypel has been super quiet
- 12:25Speaker 4: in the off season. So they're not really interesting right now,
- 12:29Speaker 4: although those teams both have talent because they're committed. But
- 12:33Speaker 4: of course Pete Golding will talk you talkie, and Lane's
- 12:36Speaker 4: great and Kirby's great and Summer all after that, Debor, Golish, Levy, Silverfield, Stein,
- 12:46Speaker 4: you know you're not You're not getting a lot there.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so, uh, Kurt Signetti not really God so good,
- 12:56Speaker 1: not really.
- 12:59Speaker 4: You know, it's like you know in the movies, when
- 13:02Speaker 4: you know, in the all these Netflix shows and people
- 13:07Speaker 4: are are getting killed left and right. You got all
- 13:11Speaker 4: kinds of things going on, and Cia or this or
- 13:15Speaker 4: whatever double agents. It's like in those shows when you
- 13:19Speaker 4: know somebody's about to die and somebody would ask Kurt Signetti,
- 13:24Speaker 4: you know, will you spare me?
- 13:26Speaker 5: Not really?
- 13:28Speaker 4: Oh no, really, I mean this was the question for
- 13:30Speaker 4: our listeners. The Purdue athletic director stepped up to the
- 13:34Speaker 4: podium and his first first press conference is perdue ad
- 13:38Speaker 4: and he was asked this question.
- 13:40Speaker 8: I was wondering if you saw or heard the comments
- 13:43Speaker 8: from Tommy McClellan and his opening presser, we are here.
- 13:46Speaker 1: To win championships.
- 13:48Speaker 8: If you don't want to win championships, go to Indiana,
- 13:52Speaker 8: can take a little shot. I didn't know if you
- 13:53Speaker 8: had any comments on that at all.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Not really, Can somebody tell me what Tommy mc lellen
- 14:00Speaker 4: was thinking he would I don't what if you don't
- 14:06Speaker 4: want to win championships, go to Indiana.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I don't understand. They just went undefeated.
- 14:12Speaker 4: They embarrassed Alabama and Ohio State and then punch Miami
- 14:16Speaker 4: in the in the mouth in the fourth quarter.
- 14:18Speaker 7: Not only that, you've been out scored like seventy two
- 14:20Speaker 7: to three in the past two years versus the my
- 14:23Speaker 7: yead I mean what hudd up?
- 14:25Speaker 8: I was wondering if you saw or heard the comments
- 14:28Speaker 8: from Tommy McClellan and his opening presser, we are here
- 14:31Speaker 8: to win championships. If you don't want to win championships,
- 14:35Speaker 8: go to Indiana. Canna take a little shot. I didn't
- 14:37Speaker 8: know if you had any comments on that at all.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Not really, That was Kurt Signetti at the end.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Not really.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Isn't that beautiful? What do you say to that?
- 14:45Speaker 4: I want to wake up? Not really, I just want
- 14:48Speaker 4: to play this NonStop.
- 14:51Speaker 9: Not really all right, back to my back to before
- 14:56Speaker 9: we go, go to Mike Ntulier, my Mount Rushmore s
- 15:00Speaker 9: see coaches, coach, Paul bear Bryant, Pat Summit, Skip Bertman,
- 15:04Speaker 9: Nick Saban.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Gotta get mikes. Huh I liketed the Mikes. Oh yeah yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I mean it hurt me to leave Spurrier off. Yeah,
- 15:19Speaker 1: it hurt me to leave Rick Patino off.
- 15:22Speaker 4: But you know, Patino was what ninety to ninety seven,
- 15:30Speaker 4: and while while he had a tremendous impact on the league,
- 15:33Speaker 4: big time, yeah, big big, big, big time, it's like Spurrier.
- 15:38Speaker 4: Both of them made people understand that you could play
- 15:42Speaker 4: another way, and they made you covers slash guard defend
- 15:47Speaker 4: them in a whole other way. And here's an idea.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Rick Patino believed in using every square inch of the
- 15:56Speaker 4: basketball court and Steve Spurrier believed did in leveraging every
- 16:01Speaker 4: blade of grass on the football field. As y'all know,
- 16:05Speaker 4: we played between the hashmarks. Prior to Steve Spurrier. You
- 16:09Speaker 4: could play a five to two defense and get away
- 16:11Speaker 4: with it, but most everybody was playing a four to
- 16:13Speaker 4: three and then people were az, hay on, there's people
- 16:17Speaker 4: running wide open down the hash Yeah, that's because Spurriers
- 16:22Speaker 4: looked at your defense and he knows that you have
- 16:25Speaker 4: no idea what to do. Wh he's dropping fifty two
- 16:29Speaker 4: on you right and laughing at you in the fourth
- 16:30Speaker 4: quarter and over there serenading the band run it up
- 16:36Speaker 4: before we go to Mike Natilia, lsu insider on Skip
- 16:39Speaker 4: Bourban and Jaden Daniels. That is my Mount Rushmore coach.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Paul bear Bryant legend, Pat Summit, goat legend, Bertman, goat legend,
- 16:53Speaker 4: Nick Saban, goat legend. Bertman, the best college base even
- 16:59Speaker 4: over Augie and what whatever his name is to doe
- 17:01Speaker 4: to do yeah out at Southern cal Bartman is the
- 17:07Speaker 4: best baseball coach in the history of college baseball.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Yeah, behind that, Okay, how many heads are on Mount right?
- 17:16Speaker 4: We can debate it over ice, cold, bud light and
- 17:19Speaker 4: wings at Martin's and Livingston, But I just want to
- 17:21Speaker 4: let you know what, Now, how many.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Heads are at Mount Rushmore? I have no idea. Four
- 17:26Speaker 1: is the four?
- 17:27Speaker 4: Yeah, LSU Mount Rushmore from RT, Curly Hallman, Jerry Donardo,
- 17:34Speaker 4: Brian Kelly. Well, you can't leave out Mike Archer. I
- 17:40Speaker 4: mean to round it out show. I mean Adam all
- 17:44Speaker 4: in there now, Yeah, No, I mean Curly Hallman, Jerry Donardo,
- 17:49Speaker 4: Brian Kelly. The Brian Kelly thing is, you know, I
- 17:53Speaker 4: know people say he's not a good coach. He wanted
- 17:56Speaker 4: every level. Yeah, he wanted every level, and from from
- 18:02Speaker 4: Grand Valley to Notre Dame and and and look at LSU.
- 18:05Speaker 4: He he was kind of messing around at the nine
- 18:07Speaker 4: and three level and anyway, and I know they've been
- 18:13Speaker 4: raised in all.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I mean even when Jade and Daniels.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Won the Heisman, they were mad as hell, going nine
- 18:17Speaker 4: and three furious. So, uh, we've got a sixty sixty
- 18:23Speaker 4: two area code on the Goldenman Casino text line. I
- 18:30Speaker 4: don't know who this is Jackson. You can look at
- 18:32Speaker 4: that some actor from Breaking Bad, but I think I
- 18:36Speaker 4: know who. Okay, yeah you would. Actually you'll know if
- 18:40Speaker 4: I show you a picture, you'll know who's talking about.
- 18:41Speaker 7: I do know who he's talking about. This is the
- 18:44Speaker 7: security guy. He's always there.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Mister d X asked asked a great question on the
- 18:52Speaker 4: Dancing Rabbit off text line. How many NCAA Championships do
- 18:56Speaker 4: you think Patino would have won if he stayed at Kentucky. Well,
- 19:02Speaker 4: I'd say at least two more, but possibly three. I
- 19:06Speaker 4: don't know how many more final but final fours is
- 19:09Speaker 4: like the juice. I don't know how many more final fours.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Rick Patino would have gone too at the University of
- 19:16Speaker 4: Kentucky if he doesn't take the Celtics job. Even his
- 19:20Speaker 4: younger son, Richard Patino, who's in coaching, gave him hell
- 19:23Speaker 4: the last couple of years in press conferences about if
- 19:26Speaker 4: he'd ha stayed in Kentucky. There's no telling how many
- 19:29Speaker 4: final fours he would have gone to Mike Ntillier on Skip,
- 19:33Speaker 4: Bertman and Jaden Daniels Coming up next, brought to you
- 19:36Speaker 4: by Independent Roofing Systems. Number one in the commercial and
- 19:40Speaker 4: industrial roofing Space Roofing MS.
- 20:22Speaker 1: You gonna show me the money.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Good Morning, Out of Bounds ESPN one oh five nine,
- 20:28Speaker 4: The Zone. Mike Detillier WWL Radio TV New Orleans, LSU,
- 20:33Speaker 4: New Orleans, Saints. He joins us on the Farm Bureau
- 20:36Speaker 4: Insurance guest line. You can watch the show right now
- 20:41Speaker 4: on the YouTube channel. It is Electric Search, out of

- 20:55Speaker 4: your church, that's all powered by sound, sound, sound and communications.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Mike D on the show. Mike's the legend. I think
- 21:06Speaker 4: he's the best baseball coach, college baseball coach in the
- 21:09Speaker 4: history of college baseball, even over Augie and DeDeaux out
- 21:12Speaker 4: at Southern Cal all of them great, and there there
- 21:16Speaker 4: were others, but skip Bertman passes away. You've known him
- 21:19Speaker 4: for a long long time, and talk about his impact
- 21:24Speaker 4: on LSU and Baton Rouge in Louisiana baseball.
- 21:28Speaker 10: Mike D not only did he affect what happened at LSU,
- 21:35Speaker 10: he affected the entire Southeast Conference and Ron Polk won
- 21:41Speaker 10: and one big Assissippi State. But Skipp's impact he became
- 21:48Speaker 10: bab Bryant of college Baseball UH in the SEC, and
- 21:54Speaker 10: he would always tell his story about that.
- 22:00Speaker 6: When I first got there, look in the stands and
- 22:05Speaker 6: Mike had maybe three hundred.
- 22:07Speaker 10: Or four hundred people watch us, and they were.
- 22:11Speaker 6: Family members or wives, girlfriends, or people that got lost
- 22:18Speaker 6: and decided to go sit in the stands, and he's like,
- 22:22Speaker 6: you know, my dream was to build this. I wanted
- 22:26Speaker 6: that opportunity because you know, he had coached with Ron Fraser,
- 22:29Speaker 6: who is one of the all time greats at Miami Florida.
- 22:34Speaker 6: What Fraser did there was really special too. But Skip
- 22:39Speaker 6: had a dream about what to do with LSU and
- 22:43Speaker 6: how to recruit and he did a fantastic job. He
- 22:48Speaker 6: just really did.
- 22:49Speaker 1: And he.
- 22:52Speaker 10: Was not only a great coach, he also was a
- 22:58Speaker 10: guy that was tremendous mo devader and teacher and so
- 23:03Speaker 10: many of the people that played for him had all
- 23:06Speaker 10: these stories about what he did for them after playing
- 23:11Speaker 10: for him at LSU. He told me a story one time,
- 23:17Speaker 10: and I think it's partially true. He was the one
- 23:24Speaker 10: that put the licensing fee on tickets and everything else.
- 23:32Speaker 10: LSU had never done that before. It had been done
- 23:35Speaker 10: at Florida and I think had charge you before, and
- 23:40Speaker 10: they decided to up the ANNIE on the licensing fee,
- 23:46Speaker 10: and so they would charge you a certain amount per
- 23:52Speaker 10: year to drive your RV, which which is huge in
- 23:57Speaker 10: Baton Rouge. If we have been to a Tiger football game.
- 23:59Speaker 10: I mean, they got RV's all over the place. And
- 24:02Speaker 10: so he meets with all the people that have the
- 24:08Speaker 10: RVs and he comes up with the line about the
- 24:13Speaker 10: guys the administration, the upper echelon, they want to charge
- 24:20Speaker 10: you ten thousand dollars a year to park your RV
- 24:26Speaker 10: for LSU games, basketball and baseball. And I said, that's
- 24:32Speaker 10: no way that's going to happen. No way it's going
- 24:35Speaker 10: to happen. I'll shut that down and the gas when
- 24:39Speaker 10: people here ten you know, ten thousand dollars, you know,
- 24:43Speaker 10: And he says, but I'll tell you what he says.
- 24:47Speaker 10: I told him I would cut that in half and
- 24:50Speaker 10: now you'll pay five thousand dollars. Man, everybody's clapping and
- 24:55Speaker 10: searing and everything else, and he said, I walked off
- 24:59Speaker 10: the state and I told the chancellor that's how you
- 25:02Speaker 10: do it. But okay, now how much all of that
- 25:11Speaker 10: is true? And I'm not real sure, you know, man,
- 25:15Speaker 10: he had a way of stretching the rubber band. But man,
- 25:18Speaker 10: he was great with people, even up until last year
- 25:24Speaker 10: and his health was feeling. Uh, he would come to
- 25:29Speaker 10: a game and people you know, would stand there and
- 25:31Speaker 10: take pictures with him. He'd sign autographs. You know, he
- 25:35Speaker 10: was that was skiff. But he was a great people
- 25:40Speaker 10: person to help you and would always ask about you,
- 25:46Speaker 10: how you doing, how's your family and you know, and
- 25:49Speaker 10: how's everything going. And we had Tim Brando on last night.
- 25:54Speaker 10: Branda had not heard the story and he did a
- 25:59Speaker 10: talk not from where I live, and I got invited to,
- 26:04Speaker 10: you know, introduce him and and you know it was
- 26:09Speaker 10: you know, standing ovation Skip when he get up there
- 26:12Speaker 10: because of what he had done.
- 26:14Speaker 5: And you know, we had the.
- 26:16Speaker 10: Microphone set to him. He was in the wheelchair and
- 26:19Speaker 10: every ticket he talked, and I mean non stop. So
- 26:23Speaker 10: if you think you're going to talk to Skip Bertman
- 26:25Speaker 10: and be have him on for five minutes, you can
- 26:27Speaker 10: forget that. Take him longer than five minutes to answer
- 26:30Speaker 10: a question. So afterwards were sitting down talking and he's like,
- 26:38Speaker 10: you know, when I first got here, I think I
- 26:41Speaker 10: introduced you on a television show and I said you
- 26:45Speaker 10: did nineteen eighty four, and he says, I knew you
- 26:52Speaker 10: were never going to be a full time guy in
- 26:54Speaker 10: his business because he got a lot of planets revolving
- 26:59Speaker 10: that son that you have. I was like, yeah, I
- 27:02Speaker 10: get it, I get it. Coached, and he said, man,
- 27:04Speaker 10: look at Brando and what he's been able to accomplish
- 27:08Speaker 10: in life. You know, And he said, but from the wound,
- 27:13Speaker 10: everybody should have known Brando was going to be an announcer.
- 27:18Speaker 10: And he tim toilt, Mike, I'd never heard it. He
- 27:22Speaker 10: never told me that. He said, you know, he would
- 27:24Speaker 10: give me a backhanded compliment. But he said, you know,
- 27:28Speaker 10: he would tell you things like that, but he wasn't
- 27:30Speaker 10: going to tell it to me, and that will skip.
- 27:34Speaker 8: You know.
- 27:35Speaker 10: He wanted to make you laugh. He wanted to make
- 27:37Speaker 10: you feel comfortable around him. He did a great job
- 27:41Speaker 10: of recruiting the type players he felt could win at
- 27:45Speaker 10: LSU and the last game he played he coached, he
- 27:52Speaker 10: got deep at tu Lane and so you know, in
- 27:56Speaker 10: the tournament and he was like a washed uful coach
- 28:02Speaker 10: at this stage, you know, and he sort of wink
- 28:05Speaker 10: it off. You know, I'm just a washed up coach.
- 28:08Speaker 10: But man, you talk about a great guy, go just
- 28:11Speaker 10: a terrific recruiter, a great motivator of men, a guy
- 28:17Speaker 10: that knew how to touch the right button to get
- 28:21Speaker 10: you to play for him. He was a fundamentalistic type
- 28:27Speaker 10: coach and uh, he's going to be missed. And even
- 28:31Speaker 10: after you know his time here as a baseball coach
- 28:37Speaker 10: and then athletic director, he was unbelievable ambassador for LSU
- 28:42Speaker 10: and Jay Johnson would always tell me, you know, I
- 28:46Speaker 10: go to him, I go and talk to him about
- 28:50Speaker 10: certain things. Uh, you know, if it was baseball wise,
- 28:53Speaker 10: and but he was.
- 28:55Speaker 11: He was one of a kind.
- 28:56Speaker 10: And uh he did become the Bryant of SEC baseball,
- 29:03Speaker 10: no question. Okay, other guys won, you know, General Neelan
- 29:09Speaker 10: won big in Tennessee. Johnny Bark won a lot of
- 29:12Speaker 10: games that will miss a ton of them. But Bear
- 29:17Speaker 10: took it to another level. And that's what Skip Bertman
- 29:23Speaker 10: did well SEC baseball. And he would always laugh, you
- 29:29Speaker 10: know what I did great? I guess for LA Shoot,
- 29:31Speaker 10: they didn't fire me, but he said, uh, I made
- 29:34Speaker 10: everybody else better, which made it worse for me. But
- 29:39Speaker 10: that was skip Man, you know, and he he was
- 29:43Speaker 10: really something else just to hear him talk and that.
- 29:47Speaker 6: Started a half graveling voice that he had.
- 29:49Speaker 10: But man, great storyteller, and he had him and just
- 29:53Speaker 10: what he did for for everybody here. And he made
- 29:57Speaker 10: you feel like he knew you for the last forty years,
- 30:04Speaker 10: even if you had a five minute conversation with you.
- 30:07Speaker 1: That is that's the that's the power right there.
- 30:12Speaker 4: He he made you feel like he had known you
- 30:16Speaker 4: for years and you were the most important person in
- 30:19Speaker 4: the room. And man, when coaches are good at what
- 30:22Speaker 4: they do, plus they have what the superpower of what
- 30:24Speaker 4: Mike Detilier just described.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Then you got something.
- 30:28Speaker 4: And that's why he's the best ever my Mount Rushmore
- 30:30Speaker 4: all time, Mike d And I'm leaving off some some
- 30:33Speaker 4: great coaches, but my Mount Rushmore of SEC coaches, regardless
- 30:37Speaker 4: of sport coach Paul bear Bryant, Pat Summit, Skip Bertman,
- 30:44Speaker 4: Nick Saban. I mean that's that's my four And uh and.
- 30:48Speaker 10: Here's the crazy part. Skip was there when they hired
- 30:54Speaker 10: you know who Nick, that's right. And and he he
- 31:00Speaker 10: has said, he has said to the last conversation that
- 31:06Speaker 10: I heard, you know, we spoke. He was like, Saban
- 31:11Speaker 10: is the greatest coach of all time. Wow, in college football,
- 31:20Speaker 10: he said, regardless of sports, he's the greatest.
- 31:26Speaker 4: What a compliment from Bertman, who won four five national
- 31:30Speaker 4: championships and went to eleven College World Series at elis right.
- 31:36Speaker 4: So Mike, let's let's continue on with skip Bertman. We
- 31:39Speaker 4: can get We may get to Jaden Daniels, we may not.
- 31:41Speaker 4: But this is I grew up with Bertman. I'm fascinated
- 31:45Speaker 4: by I got to meet him, I got to talk
- 31:47Speaker 4: to him.
- 31:47Speaker 1: He was so nice to me.
- 31:48Speaker 4: Didn't know who in the hell I was so Mike
- 31:50Speaker 4: Nttillier w w L Radio on the Farm Bureau Insurance
- 31:54Speaker 4: Guess Line talk about his larger than life personality and
- 31:58Speaker 4: the fact that he was also this big promoter for
- 32:02Speaker 4: LSU baseball. You mentioned early only three or four hundred
- 32:05Speaker 4: people going to the games, and he just he created
- 32:09Speaker 4: a carnival with fireworks in the San Diego Chicken. He
- 32:12Speaker 4: was determined, like you said, to sell people on Hey,
- 32:15Speaker 4: this is inexpensive entertainment. Come out and see us. We're
- 32:18Speaker 4: going to entertain You talk about that, Mike d.
- 32:21Speaker 10: Yeah, he had a bit of some people might not.
- 32:28Speaker 10: He had a bit of Bill becking him. Yeah, Oh
- 32:31Speaker 10: you know, he was a bit of a showman, and
- 32:35Speaker 10: he knew he had to sell people on LSU baseball.
- 32:40Speaker 10: He's the crazy thing. At one time you could have
- 32:45Speaker 10: gotten LSU baseball on the radio for like Nicholas on
- 32:51Speaker 10: a dollar. They were basically throwing it in there if
- 32:58Speaker 10: you bought LSU football. Well, that ain't the case today.
- 33:04Speaker 10: And all of that is about to skip and what
- 33:08Speaker 10: he was able to do, and he put so much
- 33:13Speaker 10: into it to make it appealing for people fifty and above,
- 33:21Speaker 10: from twenty to fifty, and then the young kids. He
- 33:26Speaker 10: made it really something special to go to. If it
- 33:31Speaker 10: was a Friday night, if it was a Saturday afternoon,
- 33:35Speaker 10: on a Sunday afternoon game, he made it, you know,
- 33:40Speaker 10: worth your while and you got to watch some great
- 33:44Speaker 10: baseball with some terrific baseball players there.
- 33:49Speaker 11: And he won different ways. Remember at one time he
- 33:55Speaker 11: won you know it was gorilla ball, sure you know, you.
- 34:00Speaker 10: Know they could swing a bat. And then he won
- 34:02Speaker 10: with pitching. He always felt that a great coach had
- 34:08Speaker 10: an ability to maneuver the talent around him, and that
- 34:15Speaker 10: he felt too many coaches today were so insecure about
- 34:22Speaker 10: doing it differently, and he was I'm going to play
- 34:26Speaker 10: to the strength of my team. And that's what he
- 34:30Speaker 10: always tried to do. He tried to play to the
- 34:34Speaker 10: strength of his team, but he wanted to make it exciting.
- 34:38Speaker 10: He wanted to make it an adventure. And he became
- 34:42Speaker 10: part of the show.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Sure, and he.
- 34:46Speaker 10: Talked about they played a game against Mississippi State and
- 34:51Speaker 10: you know, and he had a certain walk and it
- 34:54Speaker 10: was almost like a duck He's walk on the field
- 34:58Speaker 10: to go to the pitcher. It was, you know, he
- 35:01Speaker 10: called it the duck walk, and that's just the way
- 35:04Speaker 10: he you know, his his gait was. And the people
- 35:08Speaker 10: at Mississippi State would would do the duck call when
- 35:12Speaker 10: he would walk home to the steal and he was like,
- 35:15Speaker 10: nothing excited me more.
- 35:17Speaker 6: Than hearing those duck calls.
- 35:20Speaker 10: I mean, that was that was skip. Now he played
- 35:23Speaker 10: to that, he was playing through it, and he was
- 35:29Speaker 10: just fantastic about being a showman.
- 35:32Speaker 6: But also.
- 35:35Speaker 10: I think he felt that his teams were he wanted
- 35:40Speaker 10: them to reflect his personality and that they were hardworking,
- 35:45Speaker 10: that they were going to do what they had to
- 35:47Speaker 10: do to win, and they were going to give you
- 35:51Speaker 10: everything they got. And and he he really really emphasized
- 35:55Speaker 10: that quite a bit uh when he was coaching and
- 36:00Speaker 10: d D broke a longtime l s U gymnast coach.
- 36:05Speaker 10: She told me the story one time about you know,
- 36:08Speaker 10: I'm there forever and she said, you know the early days,
- 36:12Speaker 10: I mean, we weren't putting anybody in the stands for
- 36:16Speaker 10: l s U Women's gymnastics, no one. And she said,
- 36:20Speaker 10: I got a phone call from then l s U
- 36:23Speaker 10: athletic director Rob Broadhead, and Bob is the one who
- 36:28Speaker 10: actually hard skip from Miami, Florida, and she was like,
- 36:34Speaker 10: you know how Broadhead was, and she had a certain
- 36:37Speaker 10: name from I can't use it on the air, but
- 36:41Speaker 10: he calls her and says, ddy, I need to talk
- 36:44Speaker 10: to you right away. It's really really important and it's
- 36:49Speaker 10: it's urgent that I that I speak to you about
- 36:53Speaker 10: l s U Women's gymnastics. D D says, the only
- 36:56Speaker 10: time in my life I refuse to go to a meeting.
- 37:01Speaker 10: I did not show up when Broadhead asked me to
- 37:05Speaker 10: meet him because I knew what he was going to
- 37:08Speaker 10: tell me, that they were going to try to drop
- 37:11Speaker 10: it LSU Gymnastics, and so she said, I refused to
- 37:17Speaker 10: show up if he'd ha dropped it. And I'd read
- 37:20Speaker 10: about it in the paper or whatever, so be it.
- 37:22Speaker 10: But she said, you know when Skip became the athletic director,
- 37:26Speaker 10: and he would call her in steady, Skip, when you
- 37:31Speaker 10: get a chance, I need to talk to you, she.
- 37:33Speaker 5: Said, Mike.
- 37:34Speaker 10: I was in his office in five minutes because I
- 37:37Speaker 10: knew he was going to try to help me win,
- 37:41Speaker 10: and he was going to try to help me do
- 37:43Speaker 10: everything I could. The other thing, Skip did, LSU starts
- 37:49Speaker 10: now becoming a big time college baseball program. Skip goes
- 37:54Speaker 10: to the chance and said, listen, I'm putting money in
- 37:56Speaker 10: y'all coffee. Y'all got to give it back to me
- 37:59Speaker 10: some of it. Yeah, you got to give it back
- 38:02Speaker 10: some to me. And he said LSU had not done that.
- 38:07Speaker 10: LSU was feeding that money to either football or basketball.
- 38:12Speaker 10: They were not giving it back to baseball. But he said,
- 38:15Speaker 10: I insisted to the chancellor that listen, if we helping
- 38:20Speaker 10: you make money, then you got to give some of
- 38:23Speaker 10: it back. He said, did I find out Once I
- 38:26Speaker 10: told that, and I'm sure he told it to everybody.
- 38:30Speaker 10: Every school in the SEC started doing the same thing.
- 38:34Speaker 10: Sure they wanted some part of the revenue off of baseball.
- 38:42Speaker 4: Mike Detilier talking skip Bertman, Mike, is he the most
- 38:45Speaker 4: beloved coach?
- 38:46Speaker 1: Because he was there?
- 38:47Speaker 4: So I know, people love Dale Brown and there was
- 38:49Speaker 4: a lot of similarities between being showmen and promoters and marketers. Saban,
- 38:54Speaker 4: I know there's love there. But he wasn't there long
- 38:56Speaker 4: and then you know, going to Bama. Is Bertman the
- 38:59Speaker 4: most loved LSU figure?
- 39:02Speaker 10: Miked ain't even a question not even a question mark.
- 39:09Speaker 6: Yes, he was the guy.
- 39:12Speaker 10: He won big. He was such a big part of
- 39:18Speaker 10: the community and you know he you know, he was
- 39:22Speaker 10: the guy that no matter what, even after retirement, he
- 39:29Speaker 10: was still part of the LSU brand. He was still
- 39:33Speaker 10: and they would go to him for important, you know,
- 39:36Speaker 10: things that they wanted to do. In the athletics department.
- 39:40Speaker 10: He always had his fingers on the pulse of college athletics.
- 39:44Speaker 10: There were some things he didn't like and he made
- 39:48Speaker 10: it known the last time he came on with us.
- 39:50Speaker 10: He he was not crazy about a guy going to
- 39:55Speaker 10: six schools in seven years. He felt that, you know,
- 40:01Speaker 10: there should be a limit to that. He did feel that.
- 40:08Speaker 5: That should be a six.
- 40:10Speaker 10: Year of eligibility if you like red shirted and then
- 40:15Speaker 10: you had a medical excuse that you should be given that.
- 40:19Speaker 10: He said, you know, why wouldn't it benefit college sports.
- 40:23Speaker 10: He never understood the kick and like you said, most
- 40:28Speaker 10: of this is from politicians that don't understand college sports.
- 40:32Speaker 10: But he was about limiting the amount of places you
- 40:37Speaker 10: could go. He felt that that had gotten way out
- 40:40Speaker 10: of hand. He said, hey, listen, if they can get
- 40:43Speaker 10: that kind of money, I'm not against it. I'm not
- 40:46Speaker 10: against if somebody's going to pay you that, I'm not
- 40:49Speaker 10: against that part at all. And he had his own
- 40:54Speaker 10: little way of thinking about college sports. He really did,
- 40:59Speaker 10: and when you listen to him, you always learn something
- 41:05Speaker 10: about college sports. But he was always about you treat
- 41:11Speaker 10: people right in this world, and they're gonna treat you
- 41:15Speaker 10: right now. Like he said, you might be disappointed every
- 41:19Speaker 10: once in a while, but for the most part, it's satisfying.
- 41:25Speaker 10: And he loved to coach, and he felt coaching and
- 41:28Speaker 10: teaching was hand in hand with it. Just I can't
- 41:33Speaker 10: tell you what type of just a fabulous guy and
- 41:36Speaker 10: he was, and what a great motivator and the type
- 41:41Speaker 10: of individual that you would want around you if you
- 41:47Speaker 10: needed advice on and you know, and he was sometimes
- 41:51Speaker 10: blunt about it. But he you know, he felt, hey,
- 41:55Speaker 10: if it helps you, it helps you, and so he
- 41:59Speaker 10: was he was something else. Dale was a little bit
- 42:03Speaker 10: more preachy, that's the right term.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Uh.
- 42:08Speaker 10: Coach Brown was a little bit more preachy about things
- 42:11Speaker 10: then Skip.
- 42:12Speaker 5: Skip was.
- 42:13Speaker 10: To the point, let me explain to you what I'm
- 42:15Speaker 10: gonna tell you. Dale was a little bit more on
- 42:22Speaker 10: the preachy side about things. But they had some similarities overall,
- 42:29Speaker 10: but they just did it a different way.
- 42:31Speaker 4: Yeah, Mike, that was fantastic. Twenty two minutes on Skip Bourbon,
- 42:37Speaker 4: the best to ever do it in college baseball.
- 42:40Speaker 10: He's one of one. I don't say that often, no,
- 42:44Speaker 10: but he was. He's one of one. He ain't a
- 42:48Speaker 10: lot of guys in my lifetime that will accomplished what
- 42:52Speaker 10: he accomplished.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Wow.
- 42:54Speaker 10: And you know in college sports, and and just to
- 42:59Speaker 10: change of how LSU ran that program and getting the
- 43:08Speaker 10: money aspect pumped.
- 43:10Speaker 1: In no doubt, Mike, that was great. Have a good week,
- 43:14Speaker 1: my man. Thank you, buddy. You Wow. Mike de Tillier
- 43:19Speaker 1: on his friend Skip Bartman back in a second
