- 0:23Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:48My name is Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian Sigler.
- 0:52What's up buddy? How you Doing Wednesday night,
- 0:56Wednesday night, folks pressing record to go through a ton of
- 1:01stuff tonight man. Me and Brian.
- 1:03We set on the production meeting for two and a half hours a day,
- 1:07getting all this stuff together, it was fun, it took some time,
- 1:13but email, we was a lot of stuff to kind of arrange and digest.
- 1:18So we can make sure that we were getting everything to you guys
- 1:21that we think you need. So yep.
- 1:23And guys out there we are pressing record on Wednesday
- 1:26night, we're going to be doing some streams on Wednesday night
- 1:28to and during the weekday Wednesday, nights are going to
- 1:32be nice to her present record. We're going to start dropping on
- 1:35Thursdays now so as the season gets on, you've got a couple
- 1:38days to press play, on any of our formats to Give a listen to
- 1:44the game. So in a way Bridle is you can
- 1:46say this is the beginning of our fall Camp, you just stay nice.
- 1:51We're we're kind of breaking ourselves in as we Start for the
- 1:54season. As you guys know, we're going to
- 1:56be going live after on after every game in the season.
- 2:02Those episodes will probably drop on Monday in full.
- 2:06Give you a couple days to digest.
- 2:08Those we're going to be back in the booth again on Wednesday.
- 2:11Drop it on Thursday, give you a couple days to digest those
- 2:13before, it's game time. So it should be a pretty good
- 2:16format for you guys. Give you something to have twice
- 2:20a week, but enough time to kind of Digest.
- 2:24And not, not overwhelm you with content here.
- 2:28Exactly. This is also a move to save me
- 2:30and brine sleeping hours because Tina Brown were talking the
- 2:35other week in her, like a great doing on Thursday, the issue
- 2:38doing on Thursday is normally, there's some type of football
- 2:41game on which after we finish recording, we're looking at it,
- 2:45we're watching we're talking back and forth.
- 2:48The next thing you know, we've down four to six beers and then
- 2:51the next thing you know, it's 30 and we have to be at work and we
- 2:56both have to be up early to get our kids ready, see Curtis said
- 3:0012:30, but he's really mean in 130 and true really.
- 3:03You know, by the time there's been, there's been several
- 3:07nights where I'm like, okay, well I've stayed up this long.
- 3:10I might as well go ahead and do everything I want to do to this
- 3:15this recording so it can get out first thing instead of waiting
- 3:17till the morning. So exactly.
- 3:20So this was a move that is for the listener to You guys
- 3:24multiple days to download the content?
- 3:26Take a listen, but it's also for our bodies.
- 3:29Because as we were joking, Brian, if you ever do anything
- 3:33on Thursday night and it doesn't matter whether you were in
- 3:36college or now, as we are in our 30s, with kids and real jobs,
- 3:41Friday's will the carrot, you feel like, it's okay.
- 3:46I can go on three hours of sleep, tomorrow's Friday the
- 3:50weekend after that. Yeah, I can make it eight hours.
- 3:53I can I can you know punch in punch out and then if I need to
- 3:57get some extra sleep, I got that opportunity.
- 4:00If I need to do a little power nap before I head out on a
- 4:03Friday night, I can do that. That mean that's it's that's
- 4:06what it's all about. Whether you're 20 or 40, you can
- 4:10always make that excuse to get a little foul on Thursday night
- 4:15because Friday, is always going to be a short one for you, or at
- 4:17least it feels that way. Exactly.
- 4:19And when you legitimately do that every weekend in the fall,
- 4:23Plus obviously Saturday nights, where up late.
- 4:26Anyway, recording watching the late games and then would you
- 4:30like me sometimes if you all remember from last season
- 4:34sitting on a deck freezing my ass off.
- 4:38Exactly. And Gatlinburg recording the the
- 4:42postgame podcast. Exactly.
- 4:45Hilarious. Right.
- 4:47Well tonight guys, what we're going to be looking at is we are
- 4:49going to be looking at Camp battles for the season.
- 4:53Obviously we had press conferences last week, you know,
- 4:57media got access shout out some of the info, you know, credit
- 5:00Andy, bitter - Zola Mike Barber amongst other, guys are going to
- 5:05be getting into that before we jump onto that, we have had a
- 5:08few commitments since we last met with you guys.
- 5:11So let's start and take a look at those guys and and one other
- 5:15big subject that broke just the other day.
- 5:17Let's start with DeAndre Martin out of Life.
- 5:20Christian Academy here in the r-va DeAndre originally from
- 5:25Durham series ranked with the North Carolina recruits.
- 5:28He is ranked 21 to a top 25 players from down there, three
- 5:32star rated as an 87 by 24/7 and he is a hoss 63 and a half about
- 5:38290 pounds and man, look in here a solid offer list.
- 5:45You're looking at Florida, State, Tennessee, South
- 5:48Carolina, and UVA, all offered as well.
- 5:52So that interest from multiple Schools for I, what did you see
- 5:55from this tape? This is a big kid and I think,
- 5:59you know, we talked about getting some of these new
- 6:03pipelines. This is definitely one that we
- 6:05need to get in with life like Christian Academy but I like the
- 6:10way Martin plays, he's got good size, kind of a good first step
- 6:16for a guy that big especially at the high school level.
- 6:20So I like what he's bringing to the table.
- 6:23You know, I think an 87 is probably about right?
- 6:25In terms of, we're waiting for him.
- 6:28I would put him kind of as that high three-star range.
- 6:31So I think to 47s, probably right on the money, there could
- 6:37be 86 to 88 was kind of the range.
- 6:40I was expecting so 87, came right in the middle there.
- 6:43And, you know, we're looking, I don't know if he's going to get
- 6:46enough ratings from the other venues to really to pull that
- 6:52composite rating out there. But 87 solid.
- 6:56I like the kid, I'm excited to get him in and I love that.
- 7:00We're still, you know, focusing on these these big kids coming
- 7:03out of the high school ranks and not some of the undersized guys
- 7:06that we've been looking at before, you know, pushing 64
- 7:10pushing 295. That's exactly what you want.
- 7:13From an interior defensive lineman, absolutely primary
- 7:16recruiters were Ron Smith and JC price and essentially beat out
- 7:21South Carolina and Shane This one.
- 7:24So, again, solid offer list solid size at a Uprising sort of
- 7:30Prep School here in the r-va Life Christian Academy.
- 7:33They've got quite a few, guys. It's like they're building some
- 7:35down there, so definitely a good way to start the pipeline there.
- 7:40Now Brian, just a few short hours ago, we got another
- 7:43commitment. Yes, we did Mansoor delay.
- 7:47Yeah. Mansur Delaney.
- 7:49Yeah. That was a.
- 7:49That was a, that was a pretty big one too.
- 7:53You know, I know you got the probably you got the measurables
- 7:56there, you can go ahead and read those off for it.
- 7:57I mean Corner 61 180 pounds. So solid cornerback size their
- 8:03number 15 player in Maryland, rating in 86.
- 8:06But we know about lower star rank kids coming out of
- 8:09Maryland, especially cornerback position and pretty solid
- 8:13awkward list. You know, with, you know,
- 8:16obviously us BC Louisville again.
- 8:21Another UVA offer we had Last battle with Maryland there which
- 8:25is good wind, you know, Michael I feel he's been recruiting very
- 8:29well done at Maryland. The last couple years and he is
- 8:33a hell of a recruiting head coach.
- 8:34So what do you see in four men? Sore after he delayed us an
- 8:38hour? Wow word is he didn't delay is
- 8:43the guy doing his editing, the latest he was, he was waiting on
- 8:46it at it, waiting on it that it's so ended up being about
- 8:49what about an hour and 15 minutes later than anticipated
- 8:52drop somewhere around. Around 6:15 6:20?
- 8:55Yeah, he was he was aiming for a 5:00 announcement.
- 8:58Originally so you know, I'll say this before I get into what I
- 9:03see on tape, Winning the battles against the South Carolina's and
- 9:09the Maryland's you always say, it's what we've got to do.
- 9:14Consistently. Yes we do.
- 9:15We're going to lose a few here and there to the Blue Bloods.
- 9:18We can't lose commits that we sit well with two programs that
- 9:23we are level with or above in terms of overall talent and
- 9:27Prestige. So getting these wins,
- 9:31regardless of what you think about the individual player is
- 9:35Look good thing. So I say that to say this,
- 9:39looking at Delaney's tape, I like the way he plays from a
- 9:44physical standpoint does a really good job redirecting
- 9:48receivers getting them off their path.
- 9:52Probably is going to need to work on kind of turning hips and
- 9:56making sure that if he's not able to get any sort of, you
- 10:00know, physical element at the snap of the football that he's
- 10:04in the right position. Throughout the entirety of the
- 10:07route. But overall, I think he's a guy
- 10:09that can potentially contribute to us in the future.
- 10:12So I like this pick up, you know, it's not, it's not
- 10:17necessarily moving the needle for us, but at the same time,
- 10:19it's a solid pick up in the type of pickup, we need to
- 10:22consistently go out there and win.
- 10:24Absolutely, it's also a region of the country, we need to
- 10:28continue to grow the relationships with and if we
- 10:30need to get these type players, you go back 25 years ago when
- 10:34you take a look, Get that 95 team and I know that's a long
- 10:37time ago folks but there were a lot of Maryland kids, the
- 10:41fuller's-earth in Maryland, we always had a decent pipeline up
- 10:44there. Really big when Billy Hite was
- 10:46there with the math of feel like Billy can walk in there, just
- 10:48about get any player in but it's having that whole piece because
- 10:54we always talk about what? What's what's of recruiting
- 10:57blueprint, right? You can't get 20 guys from
- 10:59Virginia and sit on that. It's getting as Brian always
- 11:03wants three or four in the top. 10 6 to 8 in the top 20 in
- 11:09Virginia. And then pick one or two, all
- 11:12primarily two or three off from North Carolina.
- 11:16South Carolina, Georgia Florida. And now the end of the day in
- 11:19Texas, pick one or two off of there and occasionally from
- 11:23somewhere else in that region. That's how you build a program
- 11:27like Virginia Tech. You want 45 percent or so from
- 11:30Virginia. And you want at least four of
- 11:34those guys to be top 15 players. Yep.
- 11:38That's what you want. Crap, preferably two of them to
- 11:40be top ten and then you kind of go from there.
- 11:43I mean we could fill the the team Ginny kids every year.
- 11:47But at this point, the way other schools are recruiting.
- 11:51We do well, but we would, we still wouldn't get to where we
- 11:53need to be. So we still need to cast that
- 11:55net especially to those areas that we sit well with
- 12:00historically like Marilyn, like Duval like some of the areas in
- 12:07Georgia that we've kind of started to carve out a path in
- 12:12like the, the Triad, I mean, we've done really well in the
- 12:15Triad. Of late.
- 12:16So that's where we. I mean if you're if you're
- 12:18talking outside of Virginia, that's where we need to focus.
- 12:21Like Texas is great. We get a couple guys from there
- 12:24every cycle, that's fine. But you still got to cultivate
- 12:28those traditional pipelines that you have established since, you
- 12:31know, the early 90s. Absolutely, in taking a look
- 12:36here, mean, we have a class of twenty one so far and a tour
- 12:38from Virginia. So they're right in that range
- 12:41that you come over on about 45% from the state.
- 12:44And then again, I'm just looking here and got not talk about the
- 12:47Triad Xavier Simmons. You got a couple guys from
- 12:50Texas. You got some Pennsylvania, guys.
- 12:52You got some Georgia, guys, you guys from South Carolina, guys.
- 12:55So this is the blueprint that should have never stopped, but
- 12:59it did, but will digress on that one time.
- 13:04All right, other big news this week, that broke and I'm sure
- 13:07everybody's heard it by now, with Babcock gets an extension.
- 13:13The 2029. That is a long time away.
- 13:18Yep. Get the math behind our sons
- 13:23will be driving when which contract is up, this is
- 13:27accurate. Yeah, so as far as what are you
- 13:33thoughts? I mean, what do you think with
- 13:35which so far in his first seven years at Virginia Tech?
- 13:41So I think there's there's kind of two angles to approach this,
- 13:44and the first is going to be, I'll separate it by how he's
- 13:49done, in terms of hiring and managing talent for the athletic
- 13:54department. And then I'll bring you down in
- 13:55terms of overall athletic Mission.
- 13:58So on that first piece outside of football, he's done as good
- 14:04as probably, any AD in the country, in terms of getting
- 14:10coaches in With Talent getting Olympic sports and non-revenue
- 14:15sports competitive across the board.
- 14:19He's a damn good job at that. and, Say what you will about
- 14:27Fuente. But that wasn't necessarily a
- 14:29bad hire. When it happened, it wasn't the
- 14:33preferred higher, but it wasn't a bad hire.
- 14:37It hasn't worked out but hindsight's 20/20, so I'm not
- 14:43going to say that. It was a whiff.
- 14:44I'm going to say that. He probably had some options
- 14:49that may have been a better fit that he passed on.
- 14:53But there wasn't any red flags that said for went to a would
- 14:57have been a bad hire when that higher was made.
- 15:01So it is what it is at this point from that perspective.
- 15:05Now, from a athletic department Mission standpoint, I think
- 15:11that's where this comes into the most play, especially with Reach
- 15:15For Excellence launching. And Regardless of what happens
- 15:18with went away, whether he's gone after a season or two, or
- 15:21whether he rides out the remainder of his contract, I
- 15:24think overall. They've said you've done well
- 15:28enough, where we're going to let you hire another football coach.
- 15:32Yeah, you're going to get one more.
- 15:34One more shot at this. While you're you're here based
- 15:39on your overall track record we trust you to potentially do
- 15:44better this time in terms of finding a fit and I Coming over
- 15:48all. Now, you'll say Fuente is a bad
- 15:51fit, just I think Flint with necessarily the way he came in,
- 15:56but I think Fuente is a bad fit in terms of the type of coach
- 16:02that fans wanted or expected coming off of beamer, I think he
- 16:06did a good job of respecting. Some of the traditions and
- 16:10things about Virginia Tech coming in, but he didn't kind of
- 16:13get the nuances of what the fan base is expected from a coach.
- 16:18That's 100% true. You go from prank, who is just
- 16:22at that point in time and even up through that point in time
- 16:25was lovable, Grandpa figure. Even if you go back, when we
- 16:29were younger, if he was here, people that met him, he was a
- 16:32very approachable person where people pay is not and could that
- 16:37change of one day, maybe maybe not.
- 16:40If if you get 12 wins a year, yeah it would change real quick
- 16:43cuz everybody love you regardless of what happened.
- 16:46But if one day here at the time was a home, run.
- 16:49You look like two or three guys out there and he was one of you
- 16:52had to get in. We got one of them.
- 16:55Now, what's happened, subsequently?
- 16:58Is not good, especially the last three seasons, not the first
- 17:01two, because people jump on, and say, well, he extend them.
- 17:03And after we were 19 and eight, we were 19 and eight.
- 17:08And we were on the doorstep of beating Clemson in the ACC title
- 17:11game like on the doorstep. If that happens in 16, The
- 17:17Narrative changes but he had a lock him down because you knew
- 17:21bigger programs were going to come sniffing now over all the
- 17:24athletic department. I mean everything's competing
- 17:28Everything dip, everything's competing at the NCAA level.
- 17:33You know you had softball. Make it to Super Regionals.
- 17:35You had so many guys in wrestling.
- 17:37Make it track and field outstanding when the ACC again
- 17:41baseball had a, heck of a run until the bullpen.
- 17:43Just forgot how to play baseball.
- 17:47But so many things are doing well.
- 17:48Soccer is ranked again, soccer has been to a final four, I
- 17:52believe. Think since what's been here?
- 17:55Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong about that, but they've had
- 17:57success. If he's been given the
- 17:59opportunity because he's built everything right where wit make
- 18:02this mistake and this is where we're going with for Wente is,
- 18:06and you've said it numerous times to me.
- 18:08And I'm sure you've set it to other folks.
- 18:10He came in and he cleaned up the other stuff first instead of
- 18:14paying attention to football first.
- 18:17Now once he realized that what was going on in football, You
- 18:23got to do something with, he has got on that fast.
- 18:27The facilities upgrade the dining hall upgrade.
- 18:30The student dorms it went, it was like 17 happen and then 18
- 18:35happened. And then kind of realized like,
- 18:37okay, we're behind and things would hammer down, and he's
- 18:40gotten caught back up. And, you know, do we sit here
- 18:45and say, if he starts spending that money in 14 on the football
- 18:49program, when he first comes in, Are we where we are?
- 18:53We don't know. We can speculate and say no we'd
- 18:56have better facilities easier cells.
- 18:58We wouldn't have the run-in with Baylor and all that stuff
- 19:00whatever. But overall, he's put everything
- 19:04else on good footing and now he is focused on the football
- 19:07program and that's what's got to be done.
- 19:11Absolutely. And, you know, we can look and
- 19:15pick apart things and and everything else.
- 19:18But I mean, looking back at 2014.
- 19:22At that point, did we look at what was happening as a trend or
- 19:28as a blip blip? So but then you had 14 yet,
- 19:34fifteen different gone and then you had with maybe thinking new
- 19:39head coach might be enough to right the ship long enough to
- 19:43for me to get these other pieces in place and it will not see a
- 19:47drop off. He was good for two years, it
- 19:50wasn't good for the four or five he needed.
- 19:52Start getting these things in place.
- 19:55So not not saying that, that was the mindset, but, but trying to
- 19:59think about it from a strategic plan standpoint, that might have
- 20:04been kind of the angle. He was going at and just things
- 20:07didn't quite hang on long enough.
- 20:09In both the the pre Foo era and the the sense Foo era to really
- 20:17make it look like, you know, the design that he had in his head
- 20:21at the time. But it's the it's like the early
- 20:24through there and then 18 was the Midfield area and we're part
- 20:29of the lake through era. And the question is this season,
- 20:33obviously what saves his job and I know we're going to probably
- 20:38argue that all season with people Brian but what saves his
- 20:42job? I know I've got a number of my
- 20:44head, you've got a number in your head will be revealing that
- 20:46in a few weeks and so who knows that's going to be the
- 20:51interesting thing because Is in. For some people, it might be a
- 20:55moving Target depending on what the wins and the losses look
- 20:59like. And for some people, it might
- 21:00be, if you don't hit this Benchmark or that Benchmark, I
- 21:04think you should be gone. So it's going to be different
- 21:08for different people. And, you know, that's Wednesday
- 21:12forward to having some of you guys discussed this with us.
- 21:15It has we, you know, shake down some of these wins and losses
- 21:19this season because I'm sure that A point that topics going
- 21:23to come up whether it's every week for good or ill every week
- 21:29is going to come up every week. All right, now guys, before we
- 21:32get into looking at what's going on with Camp depth and all that
- 21:37we are going to go take a quick pause for a message from our
- 21:40digital partners. All right, Brian.
- 21:43Let's start it out here. Let's start on the defensive
- 21:45side of the ball. Let's take a look at the
- 21:47defensive ends first, and I don't think this was going to
- 21:50shock anybody, you know, curl, the reports were seeing out
- 21:53there Mari bar. No, Taiwan Garbutt up in the
- 21:56first group, you know, obviously J, Hamm during the presser
- 22:00mentioned last week. Barn is just scratching the
- 22:03surface of his ability and he thinks that he's going to put
- 22:09pressure on offenses that have to adjust to him which is going
- 22:11to make a thing. Easier for Garba in the rest of
- 22:14defensive line and probably the rest of the whole defense and I
- 22:17agree completely with him on that.
- 22:20Yeah, I think that was a good assessment.
- 22:22I mean the type of just the physicality and the speed and
- 22:26athleticism and he brings they're going to be shading
- 22:31protection, his way chipping with tight ends.
- 22:34That's going to potentially take an extra guy.
- 22:38Out of a route is least in the early part so that that tight
- 22:41end now because Has more or less a check down type option and not
- 22:45somebody, you know, running a seam or or any other kind of
- 22:48complex route in the middle of the defense for us.
- 22:52So there's a bunch of things that that can happen from that
- 22:54aside from just the trickle-down of you know, guy like Jordan
- 22:58Williams not getting a double team, Garbutt having 10 one on
- 23:02one on the other side. Like there's just so many things
- 23:05that that opens up and take some pressure off those other guys.
- 23:09So, having Bardot be able to, you know, take another step is
- 23:13going to be important this year because, you know, we talked
- 23:16about how how much of a step he took from Week 1 to the final
- 23:22week of the Season. Not really having a, you know, a
- 23:25true fall Camp to prepare and not really having the ability to
- 23:30practice each week on the position like he wanted to.
- 23:33So and he even mentioned himself, I mean this has been
- 23:37Kind of the first off season in a long time for him, where he's
- 23:40been 100% healthy going into the start of a season.
- 23:44So I think that's going to play a big factor for him as well.
- 23:48And you know, he's obviously with with some of the things
- 23:52last year, he's dealing with some of the expectations that
- 23:55have been put put on him. We're talking about that right
- 23:58now. Me and what we're discussing
- 24:00right now. We're putting some expectations
- 24:02on him, but he talked about keeping that kind of a head down
- 24:05mentality and just kind of, you know, tunnel vision.
- 24:08Making sure that he's focusing on the right things as he heads
- 24:11into the season. So that's going to be big and
- 24:13hoping to see some big things from him this year.
- 24:15No doubt all no doubt. And in hearing those words out
- 24:19of his mouth during his presser, you know, last week was really
- 24:22good to hear especially about the offseason because you know
- 24:27we mentioned we mentioned you know him being healthy for the
- 24:32first time. Well this is really his first
- 24:36full offseason a An in-depth name, you know, he didn't get
- 24:41spring last year. We know how jacked up camp was,
- 24:44so he's getting full spring, he's getting full fall.
- 24:49He's got, Billy's got JC really tenured guys to teach him, which
- 24:56is great because you've seen those guys in their work and
- 25:00what they produced on the field, which is awesome.
- 25:03The blonde, he'll Adams, Jalen grip and running with the twos.
- 25:06Obviously the defense, Event position was really hurt by the
- 25:09Alec Bryant Justin Beatles and you know, wound transfers.
- 25:17I think Jalen Griffin might have something, a little shocked to
- 25:20see Eli Adams up there. But again, that's what we're
- 25:23running with right now and you got some of the freshmen.
- 25:27I have a feeling I'm going to be sneaking and sniffing around
- 25:30trying to crack at too deep along with Alfred Binet, Yeah,
- 25:35look to see. Probably a couple guys in there
- 25:39in the freshman class either propping pop into deeper
- 25:41rotating in there with a three deep.
- 25:44The big question is, does Belmar get his conditioning back and is
- 25:50he healthy enough with the issues?
- 25:52He's been dealing with thing from the end of last season, to
- 25:57be able to be pretty, you know, a big rotational factor for us
- 26:00this year, if he is then, And you know that's going to help us
- 26:07because that means the guy like Eli Adams is probably sliding
- 26:10into the kind of the three deep and not the 2D.
- 26:13Yeah and you get a little cold Nelson, who just looks like a 25
- 26:17year old man. Right now I'm not an 18 year old
- 26:19kid as a freshman in college. What can they do again?
- 26:24What Wilfred can do? We mention just a couple weeks
- 26:27ago with the transfer, he played defensive end and he racked up
- 26:30some stats at the Preparatory Academy in Connecticut.
- 26:32So it's me really interested in there.
- 26:34Let's stay on the defensive line.
- 26:36Brian, let's take a look at defensive tackle.
- 26:39Were you shocked to see Jordan Williams and Mario Kendricks as
- 26:43the first team out there? Not super shocked, you know,
- 26:49seeing Kendricks out there instead of Pollard wasn't wasn't
- 26:53too shocking. They've kind of been kind of the
- 26:56the 2A and 2B D. Tackles for me.
- 27:02I think what they're probably going with is having with Jordan
- 27:06and Mario. You've got even though with
- 27:08Pollard putting on a little bit of weight the offseason those
- 27:12guys are more or less kind of the same same body type with
- 27:15William. Dropping a little weight, this
- 27:17offseason and and Kendricks bumping up just a hair that
- 27:21gives you a little bit more flexibility with, you know,
- 27:24slides across the defensive front, almost having an
- 27:28interchangeable, one and three technique.
- 27:31Whereas, with your second unit there, Pollard in Josh fuka, you
- 27:35have more defined roles where Pollard is.
- 27:37Absolutely. A three technique and fuga is
- 27:40absolutely that one technique. So, That's probably where
- 27:44they're heading with with that type of alignment.
- 27:47So I have no problem with with Mario up there versus versus
- 27:51Pollard. But all those guys are going to
- 27:52get run, we talked about built here, link style here, he's
- 27:56going to rotate it. At least two sets of Guys,
- 28:00across that defensive line if not three.
- 28:03So you know, first team second team, I mean, the the difference
- 28:07in snap count is going to be minimal.
- 28:11Yeah, absolutely. I in the other thing that we had
- 28:14mentioned, mean, you talking earlier day during our
- 28:16production meeting was, you know, you can let you can bring
- 28:20polity. And with Jordan, let Jordan play
- 28:22the one, you know, you can bring Fuji in at the one.
- 28:25Let Jordan played the three or bring food gonna let Mario play
- 28:28the three and you have some mix-and-match options where you
- 28:32talked about Bill rolling rotating guys.
- 28:35Moving guys constantly, well, you've got enough guys, even
- 28:38though you get two guys who are really primary, setters, You get
- 28:41two other guys, who can constantly move.
- 28:44And I mean, I think that's going to be a key a for keeping those
- 28:47guys fresh. But be forgiven, different looks
- 28:50on the beginning of the line now.
- 28:52Something else that was mentioned.
- 28:54I think it was. Was it Pollard in mentioned it,
- 28:56right? We talked about Desmond, my
- 28:58Moody, um, Desmond down in the Tampa area.
- 29:01You know, the three-star commit last year comes in big 63 220
- 29:06already. So, already would probably a By
- 29:11to play maybe not in the best shape to play coming from high
- 29:14school but you hear that name mentioned by one of the leaders
- 29:19on the defensive line. It makes your head pop up and
- 29:21obviously Max Philpott the wall phone.
- 29:25Yeah. If you probably had to give me a
- 29:28third group, it will probably be those two.
- 29:31It sounds like mammootty is coming on pretty quickly there,
- 29:35obviously, big body guy and you let you like that out the gate.
- 29:42But the thing I look at is, you know, you talked about a little
- 29:45bit conditioning wise, is he going to be able to stand up to
- 29:48a snap count, but as a third string or even with that with a
- 29:52steady rotation, that tearling likes to employ that third line,
- 29:55is it going to get a lot of run but any run, he can get this
- 29:58year is to our benefit so hopefully we'll see something
- 30:04from him. But you kudos to Max Philpott
- 30:08earning a scholarship, having a big offseason in the weight room
- 30:11is As well, a lot of lot of kudos to him on that front as
- 30:14well. So good for him to kind of kind
- 30:18of push. Some of these other guys guys
- 30:20forward a little bit. I mean some of the some of the
- 30:23things we're seeing him flying up the depth chart in the
- 30:26offseason where he was more of a Norwood afterthought at the
- 30:28start of 2020. Well it's absolutely.
- 30:31I mean, I think that's where it with the defensive tackle group,
- 30:33you feel good. And even with the defensive line
- 30:36in general, you still feel good about it because you still to
- 30:39me, I think the As Pollard, you can play in the big end if you
- 30:43need it too. If you wanted to give a
- 30:45different look but those groups feel good.
- 30:49Now, the next group, there wasn't much out there about it.
- 30:52I don't think it shocked, anybody look at the linebacking
- 30:55corps, brine is highly films is down.
- 30:57Is anybody shot? No nobody's, nobody's.
- 31:01People are mad, because thanks a lot of people hate Dax and, you
- 31:07know, other than for what? Just You know, playing solid
- 31:14football, not spectacular because he was a cop, 150 guy
- 31:17and you know playing out of position for three years.
- 31:21I mean I get some of the the great white height tape tape,
- 31:28Buzz surrounding him, a great for what I mean, it's You know,
- 31:37so I get some of that like, you know, he was four star, you
- 31:42know, Bud, Foster prototype type player and output, hasn't
- 31:49matched expectations. But the fan base, you know, the
- 31:55fans that are passionate in his corner or very passionate and in
- 31:59his corner, and for those that point out the flaws sometimes
- 32:03that can frustrate them with the Credit given relative to the
- 32:09output, so I get that. But at the same time, I mean
- 32:13he's played solid, if unspectacular most of the time.
- 32:18Yeah. And he's been playing out of
- 32:20position, pretty much since he's been on campus will see if being
- 32:27at his natural position for a full offseason.
- 32:31Some of the other things that were gaps in his game, go away a
- 32:35little bit. That's my hope for him if he can
- 32:38take any Step At All. While playing a position, that's
- 32:42more of a fit for his athleticism.
- 32:44That's that's going to be. He's gonna have a pretty good
- 32:47sees. I'm not saying he's going to be
- 32:49some sort of all-acc caliber player but I don't think we need
- 32:53that with some of the guys we have on defense of wine.
- 32:57And some of the guys we have on the back end, we just need him
- 32:59to be where he needs to be every play and make the tackle.
- 33:02We need him to be the old school quarterback of the defense.
- 33:08Get everybody lined up. Make sure everybody's on their
- 33:09route assignment, fill the gap. Right.
- 33:11Get off the block when you need to find last part is going to be
- 33:15the part that he needs to work on.
- 33:17I'd like to see somebody about from Camp.
- 33:19So, if you're listening video, folks out there, let's see how
- 33:22he's doing on that now. Justin Fuente addressed allant
- 33:26is down, I tell you what, for us that follow it closely, a lot of
- 33:31folks were hyped when you know, talked about Tisdale gain and 18
- 33:34pounds Tisdale up. 22 2008. He played about 218 a couple
- 33:40years ago and was Fast I can't see 10-pound slowing him down
- 33:44that much which is great. And then he just talked about,
- 33:47you know, the focus and the maturity and he's in a
- 33:51completely different place than where he has been in the past
- 33:54and Alan Tisdale at backer has that capability to be.
- 34:00In my opinion, he could be an all-acc player now, is he going
- 34:05to beat remain or, you know, a DB Probably not.
- 34:11But be Tarik. That's a good one.
- 34:18So, it's not, it's not like he's down here.
- 34:20We're getting. We're going to get a bump up
- 34:22from Dax because we have more athletic guy out there.
- 34:27Now by all means what I like to see him become Tremaine.
- 34:29Yes everybody would or a DVD hell yeah.
- 34:32But I think it was great to hear that.
- 34:35Yeah. And I think, you know, I think
- 34:37the bigger thing, like, the weight gain is great.
- 34:40It was me. It to take on inside the Box
- 34:44blocks, because regardless of what you say, anybody says
- 34:49taking on blocks inside the box is different than taking on like
- 34:53a tight end leading out on a running play, or a crack from a
- 34:57wide receiver or anything like that from outside.
- 35:00The box, playing inside the box, has a different Beast.
- 35:03You got tackles guards and tight ends coming at you, coming at
- 35:07you from different angles. I mean, it's It's a different
- 35:11Beast. So the weight gain is going to
- 35:13help him with getting off those blocks, standing up to those
- 35:17blocks, and not, not getting pushed out of the gap.
- 35:21Now the other part of it, the focus immaturity is going to be
- 35:24big for me because more frustrating than anything with
- 35:29Tisdale's play last year. Wasn't he was too small or he
- 35:33wasn't wasn't able to take on on blocks.
- 35:37It was sometimes you look lost. He'd have a play where he just
- 35:41completely blew up with the offense was trying to do in the
- 35:44very next play he get the wrong read and be five yards out of
- 35:48position. And that was kind of, that was
- 35:51the maddening part of his game is that, you know, he just
- 35:54seemed like hadn't hadn't, quite put everything together with the
- 35:58defense and some of that could be attributed to the install in
- 36:03a covid year. And some of that was just, it
- 36:05seems like maturity, white, might not have been quite where
- 36:08it where it needed to be in terms of picking up the Playbook
- 36:11and getting everything down pat. So seeing that the coaches are
- 36:15calling out specifically that the focus and maturity have
- 36:18definitely improved. I hope to see that on the field
- 36:22because I think the kid can flat-out play.
- 36:25I just need to see it more consistent.
- 36:27Absolutely well, second teamers Dean Ferguson.
- 36:32I don't think that's a shock. A lot of people have heard of
- 36:34Dean name more and more and more hurting like he's going to be
- 36:37one of those guys that's going to need to step up because
- 36:40obviously dachshund his they'll do play a role on special teams.
- 36:43Now, the Shocker of this group is CJ McRae at backer CJ, fits
- 36:49the mold Old right? I don't think anybody's going to
- 36:52deny, you know, deny that. CJ's a call link your guy and I
- 36:57think, you know, you sit here You know, 63 220.
- 37:02He's kind of Tisdale, which is, there was a 19.
- 37:09Obviously if he's second team, he's done something in a pretty
- 37:12short period of time to get there with the three other guys
- 37:15on the roster so that that makes you feel good about that.
- 37:18Dove obviously. Don't hear the name.
- 37:20Keyshawn artist but we know Keyshawn can play.
- 37:24It's again, it's one of those groups where I feel good about
- 37:28going into the season. It's a group that I feel good
- 37:31about and I actually feel better about it now than I did
- 37:34necessarily A probably of even just a few months ago.
- 37:37Yeah, especially with with knowing what I know about
- 37:41Tisdale. Now I had a really big question
- 37:43mark about backer because I wasn't sure what to get from.
- 37:47Tisdale wasn't sure how fast CJ McCray was going to come along.
- 37:52And while there's still some question marks whether Dax is
- 37:55gonna translate. Now it is more natural position,
- 37:58you feel like he's, you know, you're not going to see
- 38:03necessary. Even if you don't see a boost,
- 38:05you probably not going to see a drop off relative to what we had
- 38:07last year with Rook. So I'm hoping that with with
- 38:13Tisdale, really, taking a step and hopefully learning to be
- 38:17more consistent in this play. That's going to pay some
- 38:20dividends with the run and not put as much.
- 38:22Each on the our safeties to have to make tackles in the Run game,
- 38:27because that was a big problem last year.
- 38:29Well, absolutely. Well, speaking of the guy,
- 38:32making tackles there is nickel with position and Shamari
- 38:36Connor, tomorrow Connor makes tackles and you know, Feel like
- 38:43J Hamm kind of gushed over and Brian.
- 38:46Yeah. I mean it was definitely he was
- 38:49took a good amount of time with a question related to Jamari to
- 38:54kind of talk about Shamari. The person kind of reserved
- 38:58until he opens up with you but once he does you know, sorry to
- 39:01get him to stop stop talking and that, you know, he's kind of
- 39:05stepped into more of a leadership role heading into
- 39:08this year. Being a third year starter kind
- 39:12of being one of the veterans on the a unit, And it's good to see
- 39:16because it means, we're going to need leaders at all levels on
- 39:20the defense and having a guy that, you know, everybody
- 39:23recognizes as a dog. Yep, taking on that leadership
- 39:26role. That's going to be big for that
- 39:28defense because they're going to follow his lead and he brings a
- 39:32lot of intensity when he's on the field.
- 39:35In him also, noted that he seems to be getting better with kind
- 39:40of reading the offense, pre-snap and getting a lot better in his
- 39:44coverage technique, which was probably the biggest weakness of
- 39:46his game last year was, was how he played in coverage, that's
- 39:51not. And if he can clean that up to a
- 39:53significant point, you know, we're going to be in a much
- 39:56better place than we were last year.
- 40:00He had some games where he he looked like the best player on
- 40:04the field. He had a couple games we're
- 40:07outside, the Run game, he was struggling and if he can clean
- 40:11up that element a little bit that's going to be pretty big.
- 40:15You kind of put him back in that.
- 40:17I mean I'll say this if he can if he can get a little bit
- 40:20better coverage, he's gonna handle that position.
- 40:22Similar to help mooc handled it when he was here.
- 40:24So yeah, it can see that and if that's been the focus and again
- 40:28the coverage wasn't terrible. It was again, I'll put it kind
- 40:33of like that it was solid but there were times he had the
- 40:36lapses and, you know, sometimes they're at the worst time.
- 40:40So again, I hear that and to hear, that's probably been his
- 40:43Focus because he's always a thumper, he'd always put his
- 40:45nose in there. He'd always try to make the
- 40:47tackle. We take a look death, while in a
- 40:51Seer people's Mike Hawkins, who younger guys?
- 40:57Not shocked to see Nikes name but little shock of seeing this
- 41:00year, people. Because I feel like Nike we'd
- 41:02heard a little bit more about him at the width position.
- 41:06So that is the one thing about this position that scares me a
- 41:10little bit. Is we do not have the death and
- 41:15it's like you said tomorrow being a leader tomorrow being a
- 41:17dog. You know he has to he has to
- 41:22stay clean. Yes.
- 41:23To stay healthy and yeah, yeah, I don't know who the next great
- 41:29nickel whip is going. To be in this defense I'm hoping
- 41:34it's Nasir people's. I mean sound I mean I know Nasir
- 41:37people's is really kind of you kept.
- 41:39You keep hearing his name mentioned as kind of a guy that
- 41:45is right on the edge of kind of making an impact, we heard him
- 41:49his name a little bit that the start of last year.
- 41:51So you know, maybe he's taking some steps and can can be a good
- 41:56Reserve but more than likely of all the positions on defense,
- 42:02Connors probably the one spot where he's not going to come off
- 42:05the field unless he's injured or being late in the game.
- 42:10Yeah, we got a lead more than likely.
- 42:15He's going to, he's going to be on the field.
- 42:17Pretty much every snap, every meaningful snap, at least.
- 42:19So Abso-freakin'-lutely, the concern there is not so much
- 42:242021, it's kind of what's next. What's her name?
- 42:29Absolutely. All right, let's roll on, let's
- 42:31take a look at probably, again to of the stronger positions.
- 42:33On defense. Let's take a look at safety
- 42:36where hell of a story Devin Hunter running with the ones and
- 42:41at the boundary safety position and chianti Jenkins running with
- 42:46the ones that the free safety position and then Devon Taylor
- 42:50and Take daily backing them up, guys, with the experienced guys,
- 42:54with playing time. And then Jr, Walker and Jalen
- 42:59Stroman or third three, deep there.
- 43:04There's not a whole that is about it.
- 43:06I mean, you know, the only thing you would you would ask for is
- 43:12if you had like one guy that was like all-acc caliber that was
- 43:18coming back. That that's really the only
- 43:21thing you could ask for in this group and in terms of just
- 43:24experience and knowing that everyone in at least in the two,
- 43:29deep can handle their role and everyone in the 3D has talent
- 43:36and ability even if they're somewhat unproven.
- 43:39I mean that's that's as solid as you can expect from that unit.
- 43:43So and I'm hoping for big things from Devon Hunter, you know,
- 43:48he's been back with the team I think.
- 43:50I think for long enough at this point to kind of get his his
- 43:54football legs back under him and the fact that he's sitting at
- 43:58the one spot tells me that he's where he needs to be.
- 44:03Also the fact that tay was moved over to free says a lot.
- 44:08Hell tells tells me that Devin is where he needs to be
- 44:12absolutely and you know it's great to see jaelen strong and
- 44:15already in the 3D but I don't think Jalen's going to Redshirt.
- 44:18I think Jalen's going to be doing A ton of special teams.
- 44:21I think that one's going to have some packages and it's just that
- 44:26group it's just everybody has experience on the field.
- 44:30Connor is obviously motivated out of his mind and you talked
- 44:34about having an old all-acc caliber guy.
- 44:38We lost him last year. Could he have been that all-acc
- 44:41caliber guy? He was so highly touted, coming
- 44:44out of high school, he batted waited his time to get that
- 44:48chance and then you know what happened is what happened you
- 44:51know about last year at this point in time.
- 44:54And again, it's just a great story.
- 44:56Let's hop over Brawn to another room that is again, you started
- 45:03going down, it's just players all over the place.
- 45:07Cornerback room. You know remain Waller did not
- 45:12was not there Friday as a cold. Mast up there.
- 45:16They're taking all the precautions.
- 45:17They can first time really healthy starting since 19 when
- 45:22he was an absolute baller. Yep. and, you know, We talked
- 45:30about him, the injuries last year and everything that's
- 45:35happened. We're hearing him about being
- 45:37the leader him talking to guys about it.
- 45:40They getting it. So you've got that older voice
- 45:44in the room that? Yes, he was there last year, but
- 45:48when you're not on the field, it's tougher to bark, right?
- 45:52Yeah, it's tougher to bark and I think, you know, we talked
- 45:57about, I mean, the ideal scenario is probably what we
- 46:00were looking at, pre covid last year with an all-acc guy coming
- 46:06back. A guy that was right right below
- 46:10that opposite him. Even, you know, I know Walter
- 46:15never really got healthy last year.
- 46:16That's probably the ideal. This is probably the number two.
- 46:21This is because you No a healthy Waller is is a baller.
- 46:27He also he's a friend you know Fringe all ACC player probably
- 46:32at his healthiest so you got him on one end you got a true
- 46:40freshman that played damn good. The specially kind of thrown
- 46:44into the fire with Dorian strong.
- 46:45Last year was an All-American. Give that credit because you
- 46:49don't ya not playing freshman All-American.
- 46:52Yeah. You got Armani, Chapman solid
- 46:56bit, little bit bigger body Corner.
- 46:59If he can improve a little bit in man-to-man coverage, he's
- 47:02going to be damn good as well. Rhian Marie, kind of does a
- 47:06little bit of everything, I think he's probably a little bit
- 47:10better in coverage, but not as good in the Run game
- 47:13occasionally and You know, you got a freshman like DJ Harvey
- 47:18coming in, I think he's going to may not make make a an on-field
- 47:25impact this year, but having him is kind of that, third or fourth
- 47:30line quarter on one end. I think you'll see him at least
- 47:35take full advantage of of all the snaps you can get in the red
- 47:38shirt year but he might end up doing enough on special teams
- 47:42like a Jalen Stroman, where he's going to, he's going to have
- 47:45another impact for us this year. So yeah, the other piece and we
- 47:49always talk about you talk about taking tomorrow off the field.
- 47:52Is if you ever go against a team where you need a true nickel
- 47:55corner of all those guys, I think that is DJ hard now we'll
- 48:01see because really we didn't get to see last year.
- 48:04What hand would do in situations where they would continuously go
- 48:09at a Nickelback versus a true Corner?
- 48:12Yes, I'd be interested to see if maybe he doesn't work his way up
- 48:14but still he walks in the door. They His own, he's practicing
- 48:18with the threes. It means he's probably getting
- 48:19runs with the twos he had. I think the question with, let's
- 48:24go back a little bit to the nickel Corner doing, you know,
- 48:28looking Beyond this year a little bit.
- 48:30I know that that's kind of off topic, but do enough other young
- 48:34guys at the safety position. Come along, where you can move a
- 48:37Jalen strowman to a nickel Corner as well.
- 48:41Maybe maybe I mean and maybe on the nickel Corner Deb maybe you
- 48:46don't worry as much about because you do have Devin Taylor
- 48:49who's kind of a Swiss army knife that you probably could put
- 48:52there probably could not get the most out of it, but you could
- 48:56probably have three or four coverage sets will be like he
- 48:59will do this. Okay, we'll be okay.
- 49:01So maybe that's the view on it. But you know again, defense kind
- 49:06of top to bottom, you know, definitely feeling Better than
- 49:11where we were just a few months ago.
- 49:13Yeah, I think you feel with the defense that, you know, you may
- 49:16not get the top-end play that we've had in our best years but
- 49:21unlike last year there's not a lot of holes.
- 49:23They're not there's not a lot of spots where you can point at and
- 49:27say I'm concerned here defensive end as long as we stay healthy.
- 49:33I feel okay about that's probably the thinnest group in
- 49:37terms of what we're looking like beyond the Lime.
- 49:43But I mean really every other group you feel pretty solid
- 49:47about first line and at least comfortable with with the second
- 49:51line. So, yeah, I think you just hit
- 49:55the nail on the head, this group isn't going to be 2020, or 2018
- 49:58type metrics. I think you're looking at
- 50:00probably 20 19, 2016. I don't think they, I don't
- 50:07think they have the 2017 them. No.
- 50:09But that's a 2016 would be. I think they're a little bit
- 50:12better. Then 2019.
- 50:15I don't, I don't think they may be quite hit 27.
- 50:19Got it somewhere around the 20 2016 year.
- 50:22Which I mean if we can get that and do something on offense,
- 50:26which were about to get to, we might be, okay, something on
- 50:30offense pom, pom something on offense.
- 50:32Well, the something on office this year, Bryan, is for the
- 50:35first time in the 10-year of this coaching staff.
- 50:41We do not have a camp battle, right?
- 50:43And Burmeister is, you know, locked in at the number one spot
- 50:48coach one day said during this presser, you know, it's much
- 50:51easier on that one person to have that going on.
- 50:56And, you know, even corn said it helps expand the passing game
- 51:00when you just have one guy which what you get because you know as
- 51:05being you were talking through it.
- 51:06You're like well if it's only one guy, You know, you don't
- 51:10have to have ten plays and we'll have to get you reps on 10 plays
- 51:14but I got to get him and him rip something plays.
- 51:17It's like you're going to get these ten plagues.
- 51:20And these ten plays in these templates makes perfect sense,
- 51:23at least to me, but maybe a minute, you can install your
- 51:26offense at a much quicker pace. You're not having any and all
- 51:31coaches are going to trickle in wrinkles throughout the year
- 51:34because you have to do that because you have to give each
- 51:38defense. Something new to look.
- 51:39Look at as you go along, but in terms of Day, One packages and
- 51:46things that are kind of the bread and butter, you can have
- 51:48all of your bread and butter fully installed, and your
- 51:53quarterback is fully comfortable with all of those because you're
- 51:55able to wrap them a lot more than if you're having a truly
- 51:58split snaps between two or three quarterbacks.
- 52:03So that's only going to help Braxton because the more reps,
- 52:07the more comfortable he gets with The offense with the
- 52:10receivers with the nuances of picking up and knowing where the
- 52:14blitz is coming from, in certain situations.
- 52:17So that's going to help it. I mean, how much it helps is is
- 52:21to be determined, but it's better better than the
- 52:27alternative. I will say, I like of all the
- 52:31positions that you kind of want, someone pushing quarterback is
- 52:38probably the one you don't. I mean you want somebody that's
- 52:40going to make sure your quarterback is feels a little
- 52:43bit of. I can't go out there and half
- 52:45asset but you don't want a quarterback, that's constantly,
- 52:50you know, waiting for the hook Yeah, that's never good for a
- 52:56quarterback. So it's the minutes out.
- 52:58We finally have them in tality where a quarterback isn't isn't
- 53:02worried about. If I play a bad game, I'm
- 53:04getting yanked. Yeah.
- 53:06And that's the in cornelison set it, and I'm glad he said it,
- 53:09it's one of those things that finally, it's addressed by the
- 53:12coaching staff, about how mentally of that player like you
- 53:16said. But if the whole team and it's
- 53:18not just the to me it wouldn't be just the offense but the
- 53:21defense like okay who's only quarterback, you know, we what
- 53:24kind Game we play in this week, we're going to be doing the
- 53:26Notre Dame game from 2019 when we slow it to a snail's pace and
- 53:31try to run clock or is it something different?
- 53:34Now, some melts and you know, this is obviously physically, we
- 53:36can see you know Braxton has gotten bigger looks like he has
- 53:42gotten stronger, you know? And he mentioned it.
- 53:46He's not going to be shying away from any sort of contact or
- 53:48anything like that, but he's going to try to be smart.
- 53:52I like to hear that as long as we Don't put him in those bad
- 53:56situation because Ryan when you saw that number and he was one,
- 54:01it was like, what? Twenty two point seven miles per
- 54:05hour? That's fast, that's that's
- 54:08Elite. That is League.
- 54:10Like the top on the NFL level was is was was green moster.
- 54:15Luckily I'm a Niners fan 23 at 93 miles an hour and that's Ian
- 54:20mean. You're talking about a
- 54:21quarterback who can do that and he may not have been running in
- 54:24pads like the kids like you guys in the NFL are but that's still
- 54:27past. Yeah.
- 54:31What do you feel about the backups Grand?
- 54:38One G PB, how long we got now know.
- 54:41So I feel as good as I felt about the backups last year.
- 54:50I feel as bad about them this year.
- 54:52And that's I'm not trying to knock knocks Kate.
- 54:56Um, I'm not trying to not Connor, blumrich or Taj Bullock
- 55:00and Taj obviously gets a pass because he's been on campus now
- 55:03for like six weeks, yes or eight weeks, whatever it is, but It's
- 55:13just there's no sense of if Braxton goes down we're going to
- 55:18be all right. There is I don't I don't have
- 55:21that feeling. Now, there's a scenario where if
- 55:24Braxton goes down we can still win a couple games.
- 55:28Yeah. We won't but but but I mean,
- 55:32we're in a worse scenario than we were in 2018 after JJ goes
- 55:38down. Yeah.
- 55:39And we're with Willis the rest of the way.
- 55:42We're in a worse scenario than that.
- 55:44At least Willis. You knew he had.
- 55:45Even though it was a Kansas and he had won one game, he had
- 55:49played a significant amount of snaps, you take the Clemson game
- 55:52away. Last year, Knox has played
- 55:54nothing, and I know Felipe's pleased, you know, he said I'm
- 55:57pleased with his understanding of the offense and Joseph
- 56:00videos. Today he was out there running,
- 56:02he has a little athleticism nowhere near BB's but it's got
- 56:06at he's got a twitch but he doesn't have the Elite Speed
- 56:09that will really. He's not a.
- 56:11So let's, let's talk about how our offense runs, right in the
- 56:15running game you know, whether it's jet motion, whether that's
- 56:21whether it's other other window, dressing motions that we put in
- 56:24place you know there's inverted v r read option Hence all those
- 56:30things, those things don't work as well.
- 56:34If there's not a true threat for that quarterback to hurt the
- 56:39defense and out. I mean I feel like So Knox
- 56:46doesn't have so much of that. Connor has that but almost zero.
- 56:52Elements of the passing game that I would that I feel
- 56:56comfortable with. And then ties is too much of a
- 57:00work in progress at this point because of how short of time
- 57:03he's been on campus and running the offense where he probably
- 57:07has the highest ceiling of the 30 absolute bloody up, but the
- 57:11lack of experience is probably the barrier, right?
- 57:15Well, if you talk about the live experience being there six
- 57:18weeks, I mean there's a hole in the floor.
- 57:22I mean, let me see her like no not going to college, but look,
- 57:24I think he does have the highest thing.
- 57:26I think he has that potential to be a Jerrod Evans type figure,
- 57:29but he's young. He just got here and you can't
- 57:35depend on that if for nothing else, do not ruin.
- 57:38That kids mental makeup by saying, we're going to put you
- 57:41out there and it's like you know it's just different.
- 57:45So yeah don't feel great about what's behind me because great
- 57:49about BB. You tell me BB's healthy 12
- 57:52Games this year, you know we have a Fighting Chance because
- 57:57of those legs and because of his athleticism and now is more
- 58:00knowledge of the offense. I think we'll be in most every
- 58:03game if Braxton Burmeister is more or less healthy, for 12
- 58:07games, we will be in every game. We won't win.
- 58:10Them will be good, we'll hit it. Will ya, you know the question
- 58:16becomes What happens if we don't have them?
- 58:21And what I see is that there might be depending on when that
- 58:25would happen. There might be three games on
- 58:27the back half of our schedule that are still potentially
- 58:30winnable. In the rest, you could pretty
- 58:31much say or losses, Duke Syracuse and Georgia Tech.
- 58:36Maybe maybe the would be, the only games.
- 58:39I would say. We had a Fighting Chance in the
- 58:41conference. If Braxton goes down, midseason
- 58:44isn't available for those games. Got you.
- 58:47All right, another place where there's Question.
- 58:49There's the number one guy is tight in Big Stone Gap.
- 58:54James Mitchell on the Mac you list, you know, big thing food,
- 58:58talked about how he's improved. His blocking James is already
- 59:01kind of a athletic freaking self but I mean he had a chance to go
- 59:09to the NFL, he didn't because he knew if he came back and he
- 59:12improve those small areas just to hair instead of getting
- 59:16drafted in the sixth or seventh round here.
- 59:18He could be one of the first tight ends off the board.
- 59:22Let's talk about something else too because, you know, we heat a
- 59:25lot of Praise on Herbert last year and because of Herbert and
- 59:28because of some of the other areas that we were struggling in
- 59:31offensive Lee Mitchell didn't quite get a season to show show
- 59:36out as much as we would have wanted him to probably.
- 59:40We're going to see less of a true emphasis on the running
- 59:43game. This year, we're going to have
- 59:45to throw the ball, more this year to win games.
- 59:49And that's going to benefit James Mitchell stock, not only
- 59:52with us, but also in terms of the drafts.
- 59:55So that's going to be big in the fact that he's improved.
- 59:58His blocking means that he is the is, you know, truly a 3 down
- 1:00:04type player and because of his athleticism, you can be moved
- 1:00:09and lined up, pretty much anywhere across the skill
- 1:00:12positions on the line of scrimmage.
- 1:00:15So that's going to be big funny. He see mentioned It doesn't have
- 1:00:19any name image and likeness Till's yet, that was kind of
- 1:00:22shocking to me because I mean, he's a walking talking.
- 1:00:27Like Virginia Tech image. You would think someone at this
- 1:00:30point would have would have put something in place, like reached
- 1:00:32out to him. I know he's not necessarily
- 1:00:34pursuing it actively himself but he feel he would have gotten a
- 1:00:38lot of a lot of calls at this point, already told you there is
- 1:00:42some rock calling like a fault line yard work or SB Cox company
- 1:00:50in Blacksburg that you just call him and say we just want to use
- 1:00:55your face and put Big Stone Gap. Then our Stone company behind
- 1:00:58you. It's so easy.
- 1:01:01Any such a likeable guy to man. I mean especially y'all, if
- 1:01:06y'all didn't see it go back and look at his interview in the
- 1:01:10grit. Definition he won't work.
- 1:01:15He worked stick-to-itiveness in there.
- 1:01:17He worked in. It was doing what you said.
- 1:01:19You're going to do, even when you're not in the frame of mine,
- 1:01:22when you said it, like he worked in the whole spiel.
- 1:01:27That that we see on those those media drops from The Well, when
- 1:01:32Pete was doing the media drops, for Virginia Tech football,
- 1:01:36social media. We haven't seen them quite as
- 1:01:38frequently since the summer began their might.
- 1:01:42There might be a reason for that, I'm not sure.
- 1:01:46Anyway, moving on, let's let's look at this.
- 1:01:55He talked about the versatility of and with Drake and Gallo
- 1:01:59behind him, they're not kill him but they are essentially one who
- 1:02:06wore when you pass catching version him.
- 1:02:09One's more of a run blocking version of him Gallo the room.
- 1:02:12Blocker great, the catcher, which we also feel hope they
- 1:02:18decide to put him outside sometimes.
- 1:02:23Because Brian is someone that coached, when you have someone
- 1:02:27like big gap. And let's say, he's, let's say,
- 1:02:29he's only in line and he flexes you have choices to make her eye
- 1:02:35as a defensive coordinator, all right?
- 1:02:37If I leave a corner back out here and they run a Jet Sweep,
- 1:02:40if he gets his hands on and he's going to set the edge and
- 1:02:44they're going to have a lane. Well, I've told you man, we need
- 1:02:47to go, 22 Personnel, need to get where to get Mitch Mitchell and
- 1:02:51Gallo out. Are we need to get Holston and
- 1:02:54Blackshear out there in the same package?
- 1:02:57You can put Mitchell out there at the Z opposite tray at The X
- 1:03:03Gallo at the why you got Tay at the slot and then you got
- 1:03:07Blackshear. That can work everybody pretty
- 1:03:09much anywhere. So, Do it, do it Ronald's.
- 1:03:13A lot of 22 and a lot of 12 Personnel this year as you're
- 1:03:16going to hear them talk about it.
- 1:03:17A lot. Speaking of wideouts, let's look
- 1:03:21at the wide receiver room. First one, nice shot, kind of a
- 1:03:26shot because we didn't hear his name in the press conference,
- 1:03:29but we're hearing out there. Praise the store at The X.
- 1:03:31No shot. No and Jones.
- 1:03:35Thomas Jefferson Richmond, Virginia.
- 1:03:37The RBA is the too deep at The X awesome here.
- 1:03:41Kid, that's big. I'm sure some of that has to do
- 1:03:45with the changa Hodge injury but him coming home that fast is is
- 1:03:48huge is because him cracking the 2D business just of
- 1:03:53circumstance. Obviously with Chang of going
- 1:03:55down there was a need there but him stepping up and being with a
- 1:03:58kind of navigate the debris there as it was that quick and
- 1:04:04be a 2d player. First time on campus that's
- 1:04:08going to be huge for him. So kudos to him obviously.
- 1:04:11Trey lock down the eggs. He's locked it down the last,
- 1:04:15like, three years of this point. So yeah, that's not a big
- 1:04:18shocker. What did you think about the the
- 1:04:24Z with kind of essentially Kayla Smith and Jaden pay?
- 1:04:29You kind of being 1A and 1B we've heard, you know, the steps
- 1:04:35came Smith is taken to get better, but to hear rotating
- 1:04:39with pay you, I'm Nerd. If this is a thing that you use,
- 1:04:42Jaden back in to that Z position because I think would be the
- 1:04:49right move. Make sure he's comfortable,
- 1:04:51don't give him the full workload essentially don't overwhelm them
- 1:04:55when you have someone like Caleb who very capable plate.
- 1:04:59What if this trend keeps up? I think eventually for the end
- 1:05:03of Camp if they can if we continue to get the access I
- 1:05:06mean, Jane pay you, there's going to be one of the Caleb.
- 1:05:10Very capable back up but you know, the other thing about the
- 1:05:15Z is, you got other guys that can play it, we have a versatile
- 1:05:19room. You know, you've got tadion and
- 1:05:23Rahim could play the Z if needed, right?
- 1:05:26If you need it. Now, obviously we've got enough
- 1:05:29slot receiver between table a chair.
- 1:05:31Lofton. And I mean, I know you have
- 1:05:35things. You want them to do with black
- 1:05:37tear. You visualize things like you
- 1:05:40want to hear. You want him out here, I want to
- 1:05:42hear. I want to hear.
- 1:05:45What do you think it's about? The the slot.
- 1:05:48Because that's where we have three guys that are really
- 1:05:53excellent at it but also three guys that can play elsewhere
- 1:05:57needed Well, I think the big thing when we talk about the
- 1:06:00slot you obviously Tavian is probably a better fit in the
- 1:06:04slot. Then he was playing Z like he
- 1:06:06was forced into duty kind of the last couple years and months,
- 1:06:11he's more natural playing from the slot position.
- 1:06:13When you look at Blackshear, when you look at day one Lofton,
- 1:06:19both of them sliding in is kind of the the to a and the to be at
- 1:06:23that position. Some of that's by this St with
- 1:06:26Blackshear being someone that you're going to Line up at truly
- 1:06:29multiple positions, not just moving in throughout the
- 1:06:31formation. But some some snaps, he's going
- 1:06:34to be a true running back in some.
- 1:06:36He's going to be a true slide and some snaps.
- 1:06:38He's going to be a little bit of everything depending on, you
- 1:06:41know, what's needed from the play called, and the design that
- 1:06:45was from head. Coaches mouth.
- 1:06:48Yeah, you would be lined up all over the field.
- 1:06:51We wrote that down and I think Brian might be like, if He's not
- 1:06:58lined up all over the feeling that you and see after a few
- 1:07:01drinks. Brian might be tweeting at the
- 1:07:03coach. You said you'd be everywhere.
- 1:07:06I'm dropping the Morpheus gift show me.
- 1:07:12Say so we lined up all over the field, show me.
- 1:07:16But for real though, having Blackshear have that hybrid
- 1:07:21role, not only gives Lofton the opportunity.
- 1:07:24When likes your is more in that running back stage.
- 1:07:28Each of the game, you know, Loft and being the the true spell
- 1:07:32Forte or coming in. If they if we're mixing up how
- 1:07:36our receivers are lined up and we've shown that take and play
- 1:07:41outside so there might be some times when taste slides out and
- 1:07:44you bring in in Lofton to be the true Slaughter bringing
- 1:07:47Blackshear to be the true slot. So there's going to be things
- 1:07:49that we can do with mixing up where we deploy our wide
- 1:07:52receivers. That's only going to be a good
- 1:07:54thing because we can work on matches matchups against
- 1:07:57Defenders, depending on the skill set of our wide receivers
- 1:08:00and try to create those mismatches.
- 1:08:03Absolutely. And weighing off his name is
- 1:08:04more by the Pope, the head coach and the offensive coordinator
- 1:08:07again. A lot of expectations for him.
- 1:08:10This is a talented room. Super talented group, I think
- 1:08:14every day we mentioned you feel like could do something as long
- 1:08:19as they are, put in the right positions with the right game
- 1:08:21plan every week, do you do them? Wrong, is what's going to make
- 1:08:26this room? Not And I don't think you'll
- 1:08:30disagree with that. Now, let's let's jump on over to
- 1:08:34running backs. Because I don't think it's a
- 1:08:37shot. Caleb holsten's running with the
- 1:08:39ones and he said, a couple things that I think called your
- 1:08:43ear when he spoke to the media back last week.
- 1:08:48Yeah, that's the big thing was that he was watching a lot of
- 1:08:52tape and talking with Khalil Herbert and trying to impact the
- 1:08:55outside zone game in the same way that Herbert was able to in
- 1:08:592020. And that's going to be big for
- 1:09:02him because if he can, I don't necessarily expect some of the,
- 1:09:07the big ones. Yeah, like like her bird busted
- 1:09:10because Herbert died. Only had great patience in the
- 1:09:13outside Zone. And once he hit the hole and got
- 1:09:16to the second level, he was so good at making that one arm
- 1:09:20tackle. Miss that turned like a 15 or 20
- 1:09:23yard, gain into a 40 to 60 yard. Touchdown, very treaty.
- 1:09:28Did it against NC State and Duke.
- 1:09:29He did a handful of other times throughout the season.
- 1:09:33You know, big plays were kind of a Hallmark for him and I don't
- 1:09:38necessarily expect all of that from Holston, but if he can just
- 1:09:41work on that patients and hitting the whole, if the right
- 1:09:45time and waiting for those blocks to set up. you know,
- 1:09:49sometimes with a running back speed is great but having being
- 1:09:57able to Throttle Down and then quickly throttle up when the
- 1:10:01whole opens is just as important as having that that raw speed
- 1:10:07Truman and obviously you can tell he's very comfortable this
- 1:10:11year. Some jokes going on with Jordans
- 1:10:12Wilson, Jordan Williams him and James Mitchell and oppressor and
- 1:10:16that's something else you'd like to see the guys are loose.
- 1:10:20They're throwing joke, questions.
- 1:10:21They're hanging out there watching each other's interviews
- 1:10:24and that was for numerous guys. Now, I don't know how happy you
- 1:10:29are to hear this but you know, Like she was going to get some
- 1:10:33runs with the running back one's and you know, but it's at least
- 1:10:39it was said by cornelison that they've tried to put too much on
- 1:10:42him last year and had him thinking way too much.
- 1:10:46And I think maybe that was a necessity because of depth
- 1:10:51issues. Because for me and you tell me
- 1:10:54if I'm right or wrong Brian, come coming in last year.
- 1:11:00We were hoping that we would be seeing him elsewhere.
- 1:11:03Not at the running back position.
- 1:11:05We're expecting him to primarily be lobbying occasional to the
- 1:11:10occasional change of pace back, but mostly lining up as the
- 1:11:15primary or secondary slot receiver, and we didn't see much
- 1:11:21of that, until towards the end of the season, and it seemed
- 1:11:24like towards the end of the season.
- 1:11:25He got better at they, have better deploying him, but
- 1:11:30because of that, they didn't use him as traditionally in the
- 1:11:34running game. And I feel like we're probably
- 1:11:35going to get a little bit of a mix of from a receiver
- 1:11:39standpoint. What we saw at the end of last
- 1:11:41year but they're still going to deploy him most often as as kind
- 1:11:45of a number two running back which isn't as long as you're
- 1:11:48doing the other things I don't so much.
- 1:11:50Mind him being a spell especially if he having known
- 1:11:54the offense a little bit more working a little bit more on on
- 1:11:57some of his vision and I don't think he has bad Vision.
- 1:12:00I think just sometimes early in the snap.
- 1:12:05He makes his first decision isn't always the best decision.
- 1:12:10And then kind of, once you've committed to a path, it's hard
- 1:12:13to kind of redirect and make the right choice there.
- 1:12:18So just a little bit more patience.
- 1:12:20Like I said, sometimes throttling down and waiting for
- 1:12:23the blocks to get where they need to be, is better than
- 1:12:28hitting the whole hard. You want to hit the hard on,
- 1:12:30like, short yardage plays and things like that.
- 1:12:33But for plays that are trying to go outside You want you want the
- 1:12:36blocks to get where they're going to be because that's going
- 1:12:38to give you the best opportunity, to turn a turn it
- 1:12:41into a big play. So hopefully he learns a little
- 1:12:44something like Holston from from her word on that front but I
- 1:12:49feel okay about it. I know I've said I don't want
- 1:12:52him just to be a spell back, but if the next guy we're going to
- 1:12:56talk about can carry some of that spell back load.
- 1:13:01That gives Blackshear the opportunity to Really work from
- 1:13:06the slot while also occasionally being that you know, offensive
- 1:13:10weapon that you need. But also being that that number
- 1:13:13two, running back and that and we're talking about Keyshawn
- 1:13:15King here who is fully back with the team.
- 1:13:19Seems to be the primary backup behind Blackshear and Holston
- 1:13:23and we're going to need him to play a role this year and be
- 1:13:29consistent when he gets on the field in that role it sounds
- 1:13:33like some of the things that were problematic last year that
- 1:13:38have been worked on. He's put on a little bit of
- 1:13:40weight and it sounds like he's been working harder in the film
- 1:13:44room as well to understand the offense and be able to carry
- 1:13:47some of that load. So looking forward to see
- 1:13:50Keshawn King because he's a hell of an athlete.
- 1:13:53You know, we saw that in 2019 when he got a significant amount
- 1:13:57of run that year so hopefully will, at least see kind of
- 1:14:01something similar heading into 2021, and another name Mentioned
- 1:14:06was Marco Lee and I know this is going to make a lot of people
- 1:14:10out there happy to hear that name.
- 1:14:12Oh yes. All we saw him a little bit at
- 1:14:15the end of the season. Big boy runs with power
- 1:14:21freakishly strong also went a frequency, strong different, and
- 1:14:26pads. Yeah you know and with him they
- 1:14:31talked about him not having that time hair last year with Good
- 1:14:35kind of getting a his body in shape, again, kind of getting to
- 1:14:38know the Playbook which I still didn't like just because of his
- 1:14:41size, like, you can find one or two power plays.
- 1:14:44We're gonna confirm one with him and something else.
- 1:14:47Cornelison said, and in this is where you hope going back to
- 1:14:51Keyshawn. King.
- 1:14:53He wants to see two guys emerge. The hope is its Jalen and
- 1:14:59Keyshawn. because the hope is if you have those two guys emerge
- 1:15:05You can have, you can have a Raheem Blackshear, be sort of
- 1:15:11that, he's the third guy will throw them in here.
- 1:15:13We're getting a few carries, but since we're going to have him
- 1:15:15all over the place. We don't have to focus on him
- 1:15:19spelling, you don't have to depend on him.
- 1:15:22For those spell carries, you can depend on him to be an offensive
- 1:15:25weapon that can be deployed from the backfield but he doesn't
- 1:15:29necessarily have to be that guy that's going to get you 12
- 1:15:34carries a game and need to get you.
- 1:15:35At least like 50 yards on those carries exactly how he's not
- 1:15:39going to have to be that guy. He doesn't need to be that way.
- 1:15:43And by all means with Braxton is the quarterback.
- 1:15:46You can't do the powers. Practice is not built like that.
- 1:15:49I know he got bigger I drown but please use more girly correctly.
- 1:15:54I feel like he's so big that on the third and to his body alone,
- 1:15:58hitting the line, could probably get you a yard and a half, and
- 1:16:01he just gets a little push. He's going to get you the first
- 1:16:03down. So, find the right role for him.
- 1:16:07You know, he looks like in pads, right?
- 1:16:10Who's that? Lee Suggs don't, I'm not making
- 1:16:14a comparison to ability. I'm saying in paths, he looks
- 1:16:19likely sucks. I'm gonna get a little bit
- 1:16:21better after we get off here and all right, so Braun, we have
- 1:16:25saved. Of course, you know, the best
- 1:16:27for last / you, taking a look at the offensive line and, you
- 1:16:32know, cornelison mentioned during his press conference,
- 1:16:34they weren't as deep as we are last year and we super-deep last
- 1:16:38year, but he's feeling better about the depth now than we did
- 1:16:41before the spring me and you talk about a we're kind of
- 1:16:44feeling the same way. Except for like one position and
- 1:16:48that's the first position. The left tackle is the to is
- 1:16:54Daryl, Bailey, who just looked over.
- 1:16:55I don't think that's the true too, but he's running with the
- 1:16:58tools to get reps. I think he'll be he'll get
- 1:17:03there, perfect. But I will say this, look at
- 1:17:06looking at him and practice. While a couple of those snaps,
- 1:17:10his technique didn't look the best.
- 1:17:12He looks the part at this point. Yes, he's long.
- 1:17:17He's got kind of that more thicker, lower body, but that
- 1:17:21long length up top that you want from a left tackle.
- 1:17:24Yeah, so he's looking the part that's a good thing.
- 1:17:28Number one, number two, everything I see is fixable,
- 1:17:33that's good. So there's nothing to say I was
- 1:17:37saying, okay, well, that's not going to get any better.
- 1:17:41So if he's if he's doing the right things technique aside,
- 1:17:45then I mean, That could be something, I'm not necessarily
- 1:17:48saying, if to neuter goes down, I feel good.
- 1:17:51But I'm saying if if he can take the steps from this seasoning,
- 1:17:55the next season, you at least feel a little bit better about
- 1:17:57the position going into next year.
- 1:17:59And then the big question is the move for tenuta from right to
- 1:18:02left, going to going to be good enough to hold down that
- 1:18:07Blindside. I think that that's a big that's
- 1:18:11a big question to. I think we feel better about the
- 1:18:15left side than we do the right side which we're going to get to
- 1:18:18but you know there's still some question marks with that
- 1:18:21especially you know, I think regardless of how well it's a
- 1:18:25new to plays this year, you're not going to see Christian Daris
- 1:18:29all level play this year so there's going to be some
- 1:18:31regression on that front. The question is, how much is
- 1:18:35that going to be? And how much of that is
- 1:18:36mitigated by what Braxton Burmeister brings to the table?
- 1:18:39From an athletic standpoint. Absolutely the question is for
- 1:18:43tenuta is his run is blocking his always good really it reads
- 1:18:48out on that the past buying a good and the hope is he brought
- 1:18:53the level up again don't expect their self-respect and aerosol
- 1:18:57type things you know you will be disappointed when we are saw
- 1:19:01went to next level in past Pro from from one year to the next
- 1:19:06every year we did. They went from the seeds will be
- 1:19:09to and They pretty much grade-wise 100% in the three
- 1:19:13years, he played. So now, I will say this and it
- 1:19:16goes to the next position of left guard.
- 1:19:20He's got a absolute horse with him and lettuce Smith starting
- 1:19:24out there. So, I think that is, will
- 1:19:28probably help Luke a ton, you know, they're showing Jesse
- 1:19:33Hanson as the backup. We have talked about several
- 1:19:35times, he's one of those guys that needs to step up.
- 1:19:38If you tell me Hanson, Up to where he can be a true left
- 1:19:43guard. Fill in for lettuce, I'm going
- 1:19:45to see. She has always put yours named.
- 1:19:47I'm sorry. That's going to make us feel
- 1:19:51better and really in that interview Brian, are his presser
- 1:19:57Smith's leadership is showing through solid with the stuff
- 1:20:01earlier in the year with Vice and Brock in them.
- 1:20:03But you saw even more, you know, on that presser.
- 1:20:09Yeah. I mean, It definitely seems like
- 1:20:11let's see the Smith and broke off under the de facto leaders
- 1:20:16on this line and it showed in the interviews from early last
- 1:20:20or late last week and it showed in some of the offseason stuff
- 1:20:24we've seen last year. And in this year, I think, let's
- 1:20:28see the Smith. Definitely took a step last year
- 1:20:30towards that leadership role. And it's only gotten stronger
- 1:20:33heading into 2021. He talked about carry over from,
- 1:20:37you know, the good year last year and he's like carry Isn't a
- 1:20:40thing got to stay focused on each game.
- 1:20:43No game, or season really carries over one from the other,
- 1:20:47it always has to be about preparation and execution each
- 1:20:50week each season. So that be that that's, that
- 1:20:53tells me that he's ready to lead and ready to kind of say, the
- 1:20:56right things to the other guys to make sure that they're doing
- 1:21:00the right thing day-to-day, and week-to-week to get those wins.
- 1:21:05And he talked about just across the board for the line you guys
- 1:21:09coming in and getting In some extra film and workouts on
- 1:21:11weekends. So that mean that shows that,
- 1:21:13you know, that leadership from the player leaders is trickling
- 1:21:16down to the rest of the team to. So, that's good to see.
- 1:21:20Oh, absolutely. And when he mentioned that, I
- 1:21:23think he was referring to the whole team.
- 1:21:25Yeah. Being the whole team out there
- 1:21:27on weekends and days off, still working still grinding.
- 1:21:31And, you know, I think we as fans, I think that's something
- 1:21:34we want to hear, because I think a, it shows you, it means a lot
- 1:21:39to these players. And hopefully it's the
- 1:21:41understanding of what Virginia Tech football is is, is that
- 1:21:45extra hard work? Is that extra effort?
- 1:21:47Is that grind? And you don't talk about grand
- 1:21:51extra effort, the guy started at Center Brock Hoffman being
- 1:21:54backed up by Johnny Jordan is that guy you know, cornelison
- 1:21:57talked about and you've already mentioned it leader big leader
- 1:22:02on the line and you can tell, by the way he carries himself, very
- 1:22:07confident kid and obviously a hard worker now.
- 1:22:13Brad did call him out and talk about, he had to get more
- 1:22:15disciplined. How many, you know, felt like it
- 1:22:19felt like it was every other game.
- 1:22:20He was doing a 15-yard penalty herding, a drive, which shows,
- 1:22:25you know, he's got the nasty streak to him but, you know,
- 1:22:28Brian. You played it.
- 1:22:29Sometimes. You got to pull that back.
- 1:22:30That you're going to hurt more than help and obviously playing
- 1:22:35Center, usually one of the smarter positions.
- 1:22:37So you feel good. There, you feel?
- 1:22:40Good. You bring in an all Big.
- 1:22:41Ten guy and Johnny, Jordan To be the backup in the way.
- 1:22:45It's looking Johnny, obviously he's there will mention a few
- 1:22:49minutes. He's getting some run it right
- 1:22:50car to one of the things from Brock, some presser kind of
- 1:22:53culture here. yeah, I mean, you mentioned a couple of the big
- 1:22:57ones was You talked about corn, talking about his leadership and
- 1:23:02his confidence. And, you know, we know he's
- 1:23:04confident, we've seen the Social Media stuff, but he also said he
- 1:23:08has hard work to back up that confidence.
- 1:23:10I think that's what you like to see.
- 1:23:12You know, you confidence kind of can tend towards arrogance, if
- 1:23:15you're not backing it up with doing the right things, while
- 1:23:19you're saying, the right things and talking a big game, so he
- 1:23:22definitely backs it up. He definitely needs to rein in
- 1:23:25that, those personal fouls and some of the Holdings there was A
- 1:23:29few Holdings but I think the personal fouls were bigger just
- 1:23:31because that's, you know, that's up here that's not in the course
- 1:23:35of of a play, you know. You get out of position or you,
- 1:23:39you know, you make a mistake with your hand placement.
- 1:23:41It's it's a the whistle blew but I'm still, you know, thinking
- 1:23:45I'm a badass and I'm going to finish this playoff.
- 1:23:49We play hard as hell. And then when the whistle blows
- 1:23:51you stop, that's that's that's just how it has to be.
- 1:23:54You can be as dirty as you want to be, but do that shit between
- 1:23:57the whistles? That's The Steel Net.
- 1:24:00So moving on, Brock dropped a little bit of weight.
- 1:24:04This off season 1, 2 3, 10. Yeah, I think that's going to be
- 1:24:10good for him, whether he ends up Center guard, or potentially
- 1:24:14sliding out to tackle, like some coaches have talked about, and
- 1:24:18that I said, I'm comfortable with if that's the best.
- 1:24:22If we have that, gets our best five on the field.
- 1:24:25I don't think that's an ideal situation.
- 1:24:27If that happens at Tells me that we've got a big problem at right
- 1:24:31tackle. I'm not necessarily that Brock
- 1:24:33is just a versatile player. You know you do.
- 1:24:36I'm saying I mean it's a sign that we're we're in a little bit
- 1:24:40of trouble if that's happens, but I'd prefer that over putting
- 1:24:43a right tackle out there that can't get the job done.
- 1:24:47So as we're talking about that a little bit, he also talked about
- 1:24:51Johnny, Jordan coming in said said he came in at start of
- 1:24:57summer. He's worked hard.
- 1:24:59He's acclimated with the unit, you know, kind of came in and
- 1:25:02said, and did the right things and they're really starting to
- 1:25:07gel a little bit there and click there.
- 1:25:09And, you know, he said, he was also excited about how much work
- 1:25:12Silas is an see got, and in the spring.
- 1:25:17And it feels like that's going to help that's going to help
- 1:25:19long term, regardless of, whether he ends up winning that
- 1:25:22spot at Right Guard or not. Because having that extra work
- 1:25:26is only going to be good for this unit from a deaf
- 1:25:30perspective because that's, that's the biggest concern
- 1:25:34outside of right. Tackle is what, what, what
- 1:25:36depths going to look like, if one or two guys go down, it's
- 1:25:39very true. And we regard as the other piece
- 1:25:42that I want to say that caught my eye year for the presser was
- 1:25:47Didrik Gioia Brazilian jiu-jitsu over the year.
- 1:25:50And if you ever heard about it is one of those really
- 1:25:53disciplined martial arts. So, I feel like that's him
- 1:25:57knowing like, I've got to get better, I've got to get smarter,
- 1:26:01I've got to be able to take control and tone it down because
- 1:26:04if you remember there were a couple drives last year.
- 1:26:08We're they were going to need to push it in.
- 1:26:10We have the defense on their heels, he makes a mistake.
- 1:26:13Himself recognizing that and then taking up something outside
- 1:26:16of football to help with that is huge.
- 1:26:19Now, Brian he mentioned Silas Dan Z Silas danji and Johnny
- 1:26:23Jordan are the 1A 1B at Right Guard.
- 1:26:28Backed up by the Freshman Caden. More who I know you love with
- 1:26:31the nasty streak. I feel fine about this.
- 1:26:35I do. I love to see Silas get it just
- 1:26:38because he's been here so long. Worked his ass off to get in
- 1:26:42that type of position and he's also a huge human being.
- 1:26:47And you like there would be some intimidation with against some
- 1:26:51teams. Yeah, I mean, he's a, he's a big
- 1:26:53man and in the Run game. I feel 100% confident that he
- 1:26:58can hold down the guard position.
- 1:27:00The question is, is there. Enough discrepancy in in past
- 1:27:05Pro relative to what Johnny arkadin can bring to the table.
- 1:27:10That takes him out of that position and moves into into a
- 1:27:13more of a reserve role. That's going to be the big
- 1:27:17question there. But I mean he's got a nasty
- 1:27:19streak. This is a guy.
- 1:27:21Let's let's rewind a little bit that we were talking about.
- 1:27:25Was slotted into start at tackle in 2019.
- 1:27:30Yep. Sorry, 2018, 2018, and injury
- 1:27:38ahead of that. The opening game, Chris and
- 1:27:41aerosol gets that job and never lets it go.
- 1:27:43And, you know, Silas has kind of been a 2d player ever since, but
- 1:27:49never, never quite getting over the hump.
- 1:27:50And hopefully, you know, this was his opportunity and he's
- 1:27:54able to take advantage of it. Beeping, let's talk about,
- 1:27:57Johnny, Jordan, a little bit more.
- 1:27:59Here, we didn't talk to him about him very much, other than
- 1:28:02Howie's acclimated with the unit here.
- 1:28:06He's going to be a significant player for us even if he's not a
- 1:28:10Frontline guy because he's one injury away from either starting
- 1:28:14at Center or guard. Yeah, because he's going to be
- 1:28:19the neck if he's not starting at Rygaard.
- 1:28:21He's gonna be the next best player at all interior line
- 1:28:24positions. Very true.
- 1:28:26Very true. The important he is, he is such
- 1:28:30a such a cock right now that if he can become That Swing
- 1:28:35interior. Got it makes you feel better a
- 1:28:38because we know we can rotate guys in and out or someone get
- 1:28:41Nick, you have a capable back up in this big Frank you're talking
- 1:28:45about a guy who is been waiting his turn.
- 1:28:47How about Tyrell Smith running with the wrong ones, right?
- 1:28:52As Camp begins and up to this point, I have not seen any
- 1:28:56notification that he has not lost that job, and I hope he
- 1:28:59doesn't lose that job. Because Tyrell is someone that
- 1:29:04I've seen people mention, you know, he has some great feat for
- 1:29:09a tackle. Yep.
- 1:29:11Nothing else. It might as well as run games,
- 1:29:15not great. You know what?
- 1:29:17I think our officers even with a lesser right tackle.
- 1:29:22You can be strong the wrong game.
- 1:29:24I'll take this Pasco this year. Now currently they're putting
- 1:29:28Clements and Shake as the backup.
- 1:29:31Kind of maybe a little shocked to see ships named not Clements.
- 1:29:34I know he was working over there but do you hope the man who's 25
- 1:29:39can hold it down? Yeah, I do.
- 1:29:44Although I feel better about Clemens.
- 1:29:47Than I did, I think at the start of spring and the fact you got
- 1:29:53Bob shake, at least gives you a little bit more depth.
- 1:29:56I feel like at this point, Clements is probably the true
- 1:29:58number two, but they're giving shik some run to number one
- 1:30:02acclimate him to to the system and, and to kind of that, that
- 1:30:08that's a position in general that needs to be pushed because
- 1:30:11there's no clear kind of leader in the clubhouse.
- 1:30:15I feel like, you know, Vamsi had some Advantage because he
- 1:30:20started the whole spring. He's a veteran, whereas Tyro
- 1:30:25Smith. This is really his first first
- 1:30:27run at being kind of the number one here so he doesn't really
- 1:30:33have it locked down while you know some of these these younger
- 1:30:37guys and a Juco transfer or making a run at that position.
- 1:30:40So there's truly a competition that I think, working working
- 1:30:44Bob Shake in there as quick as possible.
- 1:30:46We'll only Push those guys harder, you know, if Ty Smith
- 1:30:51comes out juice, I'll be happy. Just because If he, if he wins
- 1:30:58that battle I think that he's kind of the the one that's easy
- 1:31:02to cheer for because you know, those other guys have have some
- 1:31:06some time in their career to get there.
- 1:31:09So This is going to be it for him.
- 1:31:12He's not I don't think he's gonna go for.
- 1:31:13What's it will be ninth year. Hey eight.
- 1:31:17I'll just the screen but I don't think he's going to go in that
- 1:31:21direction. And still do I feel great about
- 1:31:26offensive lined up? No, no.
- 1:31:30I feel like I'm kind of with corn.
- 1:31:31I'm concerned about death, but I feel better than I did at the
- 1:31:34start of spring. Exactly, exactly.
- 1:31:38So on you know, Things I've never said before.
- 1:31:41I agree with Brad, Carl Nelson, Austin and listen.
- 1:31:46He's on coming. Be messaging you and being like
- 1:31:49Oh talk about Brad. Now, we cared about, you know,
- 1:31:53we just call it like we see it, you know, in our eyes and the
- 1:31:56best way we can. All right, let's roll on.
- 1:31:58Just a few other things that were kind of notated, you know,
- 1:32:00ham talked about that. The coastal has a ton of
- 1:32:03returning quarterback in. This is true.
- 1:32:05You guys Sam how back You've got the Eric King that you got Kenny
- 1:32:10picket on your 14 of whom, 15 touchdowns and and 11
- 1:32:17interceptions. And a guys this is this has and
- 1:32:19always will be a Kenny Pickett hate podcast, but you know what
- 1:32:25do you think I'm talking about was with having that many guys
- 1:32:28come back. You get to kind of look at tape
- 1:32:31and see essentially learning the nuances, the way they like to
- 1:32:34distribute, you know, and how to affect their plan to maybe do
- 1:32:37things. They don't want to do for us.
- 1:32:41There are some there is some tape on Braxton because he did
- 1:32:44play in multiple games last year, so it's both ways.
- 1:32:49But, you know, it is one of those things and, you know, you
- 1:32:54have how who lost a ton of production guy, you had his for
- 1:32:57high skies. Get drafted King coming off a
- 1:33:00knee, CL. It is not an ACL that was torn,
- 1:33:03like in September October of last year, an ACL is torn at the
- 1:33:07end of the season. And he said he's going to be
- 1:33:12ready. Week 14, Alabama, which man.
- 1:33:16Yeah you would. I hope mean I'm not saying it's
- 1:33:19not going to happen and I'm not gonna say he's not going to be
- 1:33:21fine. You know we've seen in the last
- 1:33:24few years, that ACL is more of a six-month injury.
- 1:33:29Now, that it was a full year injury crew but it's getting
- 1:33:34back up to game speed. I'm watching TV every day, it's
- 1:33:37sure both and it's honestly The mental is going to be where
- 1:33:43where I questioned at the most, for a guy that uses his legs, as
- 1:33:47much as he does both in the running game of the passing
- 1:33:50game. I mean, with the way they moved
- 1:33:51the pocket and the way they use him to influence defense has
- 1:33:56with his feet, that's going to play a role.
- 1:33:59So is the mental going to be there?
- 1:34:01I don't think the physical is necessarily going to be a
- 1:34:04problem but you know, we've seen it some now with even some NFL
- 1:34:08quarterbacks Burrow in particular, you know, they
- 1:34:12talked about he's a little little trigger shy early in in
- 1:34:17Camp and I don't know if you're going to see some of that with
- 1:34:21with dear King as well, true. That other things was obviously,
- 1:34:26it feel like this is brought up by just about, you know, all the
- 1:34:29coaches were there differences in 2021.
- 1:34:31I mean, it was a as close to a normal offseason as possible.
- 1:34:39They got the full workouts in and the winter.
- 1:34:43They got the full Spring ball. They've got the summer workouts
- 1:34:46working together when you're getting a normal fall camp and I
- 1:34:52mean the entire student body is at 96% for Virginia Tech.
- 1:34:56I'm assuming that the football team is up there.
- 1:35:00We will fit with them, requiring exemptions aside with them as
- 1:35:06requiring vaccinations to be on campus.
- 1:35:08It's more than likely the football team is in lockstep
- 1:35:12with those percentages. I would imagine it's probably
- 1:35:15only a very small amount if anybody which is a great thing,
- 1:35:20you know. And no thing ham talked about
- 1:35:22was just data. Just data in general and more
- 1:35:26opportunities in the one thing I think he said, Brian that you
- 1:35:30could really hear how much is we got to sit in a room together
- 1:35:33this year and talk about things and discuss this data and what
- 1:35:37we're seeing and and zooms great things.
- 1:35:41Like what we do right here are great, they are but to sit in a
- 1:35:46room with someone and read body language and different tones in
- 1:35:52the voice and, you know, this is what they're focused on their in
- 1:35:55this room. Well, by is knocking at the door
- 1:35:58over there. I mean, I'm really been working
- 1:36:01hard on being Prime earlier. They just chatted a couple
- 1:36:03minutes and Brian's kind of we're talking about this and
- 1:36:06Rise looking at an email from work and I hear some say.
- 1:36:09So next thing I know is Brian's, like, I'll be there in five
- 1:36:11minutes. I'm doing something.
- 1:36:14I deal with the to. Can you imagine being a
- 1:36:16Collegiate football coach and trying to go over this game
- 1:36:18film? Hey, take the dog out.
- 1:36:22What shit what'd I miss? Couldn't imagine doing that.
- 1:36:26So, you know, get that opportunity to actually sit in
- 1:36:31the room with your, with your team, with your guys, with your
- 1:36:35staff. I think the only thing it can't
- 1:36:40get worse right now and I'll say something else.
- 1:36:43I mean, this is, this is just for my observation and it is
- 1:36:46necessarily anything football-related.
- 1:36:49But for coaches in the past, if I was at home and watching film,
- 1:36:59my family knew I was definitely 100% working and not to bother
- 1:37:03me. When all you do is work from
- 1:37:06home. Home that delineation between
- 1:37:10work, Brian and coach Brian. And exactly.
- 1:37:15Dad Brian is, that's a lot. It's a little blurred.
- 1:37:20And, you know, sometimes the you know, say what you will, you
- 1:37:26might get a call out and be like, hey you got it, like you
- 1:37:28said, go walk the dog, like okay I'm watching film.
- 1:37:30But again those lines get blurred when every day is, you
- 1:37:35know, sitting at home and not Not at the office.
- 1:37:38So they understand the mind wanders, man.
- 1:37:42Did you get a lot more distracted when when you got
- 1:37:48kind of those elements in not just You know, work from home.
- 1:37:52I can get as much done work from home, but it's I get it done in
- 1:37:55a lot different ways. True.
- 1:37:59And I think some of that took some time to get adjusted to.
- 1:38:03I do. I'm very productive in spurts.
- 1:38:07More than I am when I'm in the office, it's more more of a
- 1:38:09spread out. It's a flood situation.
- 1:38:14The obvious, it's more of a flow.
- 1:38:15Where is when I'm home, I get a lot of work done and then I kind
- 1:38:18of all right. Now, I'm just going to have half
- 1:38:21time where I'm just working on, maybe emails and clearing those
- 1:38:24out and not not focused necessarily on.
- 1:38:27You know what, I put on my Agenda to start the day.
- 1:38:30So absolutely. And you talk about, you know,
- 1:38:34all that. And you here for Wednesday,
- 1:38:36really stressing about refocusing on, you talk about
- 1:38:40identity building the identity because he its kind of his go-to
- 1:38:47point, whether you love him or hate him, you know?
- 1:38:49It's the truth if you don't have and it's what you kind of way,
- 1:38:54you just mentioned learning how to work from home.
- 1:38:56You have to build an identity of how and to work from home with
- 1:38:59all the different variables in your own house.
- 1:39:02Last year, a ton of variables and what we're learning is
- 1:39:06everyone's code experience was a little different, everyone had
- 1:39:08to deal with it and how it affected certain teams was
- 1:39:11different. And when you're talking about 8
- 1:39:13weeks, and not having guys, Austin mentioned in last week,
- 1:39:16the guy who was the 2D big guard.
- 1:39:19Who's the 3D that Center is asked to play center.
- 1:39:22So now you've got three deep Center 3D guard.
- 1:39:25Who knows what's going on on the outside?
- 1:39:27But to his point is big piece was campus when we build our
- 1:39:31identity. We get to know each other.
- 1:39:34In because it's it's what it's six off.
- 1:39:37Six on one off, five on one off for on one often 31 off and then
- 1:39:42it's mine game week and then it's game week.
- 1:39:45You're slowly integrating who we are going to be as a team this
- 1:39:48year in. That's big you know if they come
- 1:39:55out here and they stink up the joint, will it be surprising?
- 1:39:57No but at least this year you can say you didn't have any
- 1:40:01handcuffs on me, man. No handcuffs, I mean you know,
- 1:40:05excuses on that in as well but I will say this The team seems as
- 1:40:10Loose as I've ever seen them in a good way.
- 1:40:16They seem like they're having fun, but they also seem like
- 1:40:20they're focused on proving the doubters wrong, and I'm hoping
- 1:40:25that's a good recipe for Success on the field.
- 1:40:31But they again they seem a little bit more.
- 1:40:37Kind of like those older teams like the camaraderie is there?
- 1:40:40I mean it definitely feels a little different this year.
- 1:40:44I don't necessarily expect significant differences in the
- 1:40:48win-loss column, you know. We'll we'll probably get to some
- 1:40:53of that in a future episode. But absolutely, I think this is
- 1:40:58going to be a lot more fun to watch.
- 1:41:03Then it was at times last year, because at times last year.
- 1:41:07Khalil Herbert aside. It was a little frustrating to
- 1:41:10watch. I'm hoping this is as fun to
- 1:41:13watch as 2016 2017. Yeah, I'm hoping that's where we
- 1:41:19are. Has anything come across the
- 1:41:21wire in the last hour and 42 minutes perhaps nothing.
- 1:41:26That I think we should really talk about right now.
- 1:41:29I think, I think we're good to go buddy.
- 1:41:31All right. Well that's going to wrap up
