- 2:22Speaker 3: you about a musical event happening at West Virginia State
- 2:25Speaker 3: University January the thirtieth at the Wilson Student Unions. Let's
- 2:29Speaker 3: start about six here to talk about it. We've got
- 2:31Speaker 3: to Madeline. Is that when I pronounced that right? Madeline say? Okay,
- 2:35Speaker 3: you're on radio, so you have to say something. Okay, yes, okay,
- 2:38Speaker 3: big gout, Madeline. And we also have Kylie Yes, and
- 2:43Speaker 3: we have Tabby Tabby. All right, So first of all,
- 2:47Speaker 3: let everybody to get to know you, introduce yourselves, tell
- 2:50Speaker 3: us what you're studying at West Virginia State. How'd you
- 2:53Speaker 3: get into this ill thing? Anybody can start go ahead,
- 2:55Speaker 3: I think I think they're electing you, so go ahead.
- 2:58Speaker 4: I'm Madeline Bailey. I am a double major. I do music,
- 3:02Speaker 4: performance and communications with an emphasis in PR.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Okay, So I.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Started playing the flue when I was ten and I've
- 3:10Speaker 4: kept with it ever since. And I chose communications and
- 3:14Speaker 4: public relations because I enjoyed that aspect of it when
- 3:16Speaker 4: I was in high school. And I just thought that
- 3:20Speaker 4: planning this gala for the orchestra would kind of combine
- 3:23Speaker 4: the two. So the three of us thought it would
- 3:24Speaker 4: be a good idea, and we kind of stuck with
- 3:26Speaker 4: it ever since.
- 3:27Speaker 3: And that's one of the reasons why you're here, because
- 3:28Speaker 3: you folks reached out to me because you want to
- 3:30Speaker 3: get into the whole PR thing. And and by the way,
- 3:33Speaker 3: and by the way, just I didn't plan this. I'm
- 3:34Speaker 3: actually drinking out of my West Virginia State coffee mug today,
- 3:37Speaker 3: oh courtesy was my good friend Eric Cage, the president
- 3:40Speaker 3: out there when he was on the show one day.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I was drinking out of a Marshall coffee mug. And
- 3:43Speaker 3: because I'm a well I went to hol On Now
- 3:45Speaker 3: I went to Marshall, okay, And so I was drinking
- 3:47Speaker 3: and he said, he said, you know, you need a
- 3:50Speaker 3: West Virginia State coffee mug. And the next time he
- 3:52Speaker 3: came in, lo and behore. He comes in, he hands
- 3:54Speaker 3: me a West Virginia State coffee boy, I suck. Yeah,
- 3:56Speaker 3: so he brought gifts. You guys didn't bring anything.
- 3:59Speaker 6: Right, I wrote my presence.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Okay, that's presence, not with a T right. All right,
- 4:05Speaker 3: you're cut off. You're not going back on again. Okay,
- 4:08Speaker 3: but but but movies, and I wanted to bring up
- 4:11Speaker 3: the pr aspect of it because part of what you're
- 4:13Speaker 3: doing is is you need to get the word out,
- 4:14Speaker 3: so you contact your folks. Contacted me and so we'd
- 4:16Speaker 3: like to come on and talk about this big event. So, uh,
- 4:19Speaker 3: talk about your and I'll get to the other two.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I was just kidding, and talk about your your musical
- 4:23Speaker 3: experience when you started playing the flute? At what age I.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Started playing the flute to ten? I was blessed because
- 4:29Speaker 4: my parents let me have private lessons growing up. And
- 4:32Speaker 4: I always just thought the flu was a very cool instrument.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Say, what was it about the flute that I don't know?
- 4:36Speaker 4: It just I always loved it. I always heard it
- 4:39Speaker 4: in movies and things, and you always saw people playing
- 4:41Speaker 4: the flute the wrong way. Usually in movies, it's playing
- 4:44Speaker 4: it the right way.
- 4:45Speaker 3: They always do in movies, whether it's no matter what
- 4:47Speaker 3: the instrument is, guitar or whatever. My dad was a
- 4:50Speaker 3: pretty good guitarist and it would kill him watching movies
- 4:52Speaker 3: when people were playing guitar and they never moved their hands,
- 4:55Speaker 3: you know, they just especially on the neck of the guitar,
- 4:57Speaker 3: like no, stop that, stop that. So all right, now
- 5:00Speaker 3: introduce yourself.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Well, my name's Kylie Hannah, and I am a little
- 5:05Speaker 6: bit of an underachiever, so I'm just a communication. But
- 5:10Speaker 6: I have been involved with music my entire life. I've
- 5:14Speaker 6: been singing for as long as I can remember. I
- 5:17Speaker 6: play a little guitar, not anything to shake a stick at.
- 5:21Speaker 6: But I am a part of our school's jazz band,
- 5:26Speaker 6: and our jazz band's going to be performing at our gala.
- 5:30Speaker 6: And it's just a really, really amazing.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Band.
- 5:35Speaker 6: I mean, Scott Woodard puts it together and he absolutely
- 5:38Speaker 6: rocks it. I mean, we have people who are students,
- 5:41Speaker 6: we have community members, we have professionals all in this band,
- 5:46Speaker 6: just like the orchestra, and it's just really an amazing
- 5:50Speaker 6: opportunity for people to grow to learn to have fun,
- 5:54Speaker 6: let loose a little bit, and it's just a really
- 5:58Speaker 6: cool environment and I've enjoyed getting to be a part
- 6:00Speaker 6: of it. So I just decided in my free time
- 6:05Speaker 6: I was going to be a part of something musical
- 6:07Speaker 6: on campus and.
- 6:08Speaker 7: That was that.
- 6:09Speaker 6: And I've been best friends with Maddie since high school.
- 6:11Speaker 3: So would you guys? Where would you guys go to
- 6:14Speaker 3: high school?
- 6:14Speaker 6: We're both homeschooled.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Actually homeschool okay, yeah, yeah, but you got to say
- 6:19Speaker 3: so you went to the same room in the same house.
- 6:23Speaker 6: No, no, we did this. We did the same curriculum.
- 6:25Speaker 6: Not such a yeah, okay, but yeah, I love pr
- 6:30Speaker 6: and so I've really really enjoyed getting to put the
- 6:34Speaker 6: gala on and do a lot of the social media
- 6:37Speaker 6: we have. We're posting currently on two social media sites,
- 6:41Speaker 6: Facebook and Instagram, and we just are really enjoying getting
- 6:46Speaker 6: to put all of it together. We've been filming interviews
- 6:49Speaker 6: with all of the orchestra members and it's just been awesome.
- 6:52Speaker 3: All right, and you said you were a singer. What's
- 6:54Speaker 3: your favorite genre? What do you sing?
- 6:56Speaker 6: I mean, I'm a little biased, but jazz, Okay, that's
- 6:59Speaker 6: how I definitely love anything, Ella Fitzgerald, anything that King Cole.
- 7:07Speaker 3: The classics, Yeah, the one sent to classic. I just
- 7:09Speaker 3: I just got into jazz a couple of years ago.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I'm a person that loves music of all kinds and
- 7:13Speaker 3: I just got into jazz a couple of years ago.
- 7:16Speaker 3: And my favorite is not any of those John Coltrane.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I'm a huge Coltrane fan.
- 7:21Speaker 8: Love.
- 7:21Speaker 3: I love Coltrane, all right, and you are I'm Tabby,
- 7:25Speaker 3: all right, Tabby, and tell us about you.
- 7:27Speaker 9: I'm a music performance major and a communications miner.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:32Speaker 9: I played the trumpet. I started playing the trumpet when
- 7:34Speaker 9: I was in fourth grade. And I've always loved music.
- 7:38Speaker 9: So getting to put on an event like this and
- 7:40Speaker 9: be in college for music it it's really it's been
- 7:44Speaker 9: really fun and it's been a really good experience, and
- 7:47Speaker 9: I'm excited for this gala. It's gonna be fun, all right.
- 7:51Speaker 3: And I will say something about this about the communications program,
- 7:54Speaker 3: uh and all of the curriculum. You know that state
- 7:57Speaker 3: is amazing, but the communications program is really good. And
- 7:59Speaker 3: we've had a lot of folks that have come through
- 8:01Speaker 3: here that were part of that program. Hollywood. Jeff Patty,
- 8:04Speaker 3: who produced this show for many years. You know, you
- 8:07Speaker 3: guys know Jeff well. Jeff, of course he works on
- 8:10Speaker 3: our sister station's ninety eight seven of the Mountain and
- 8:12Speaker 3: also KWS on the weekends. And Jeff and I have
- 8:15Speaker 3: known each other for a number of years. I hope
- 8:17Speaker 3: he's not listening right, because I'm gonnaive him a compliment.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Jeff's class act. He's a good dude, I was. I'm
- 8:24Speaker 3: lucky to have him as a friend and as a
- 8:25Speaker 3: coworker too. But don't ever tell him I said that,
- 8:29Speaker 3: all right, doing, all right, let's talk about the event.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Let's talk about the event. It's January the what thirtieth?
- 8:34Speaker 3: January thirtieth, all right, and what are people if they
- 8:36Speaker 3: come out for, what are they going to hear? What
- 8:38Speaker 3: are they going to experience that night?
- 8:40Speaker 4: So we are having a bunch of things. We're having
- 8:44Speaker 4: live music by the jazz band. You'll hear her saying
- 8:46Speaker 4: she's very modest, but she has a gorgeous voice, and
- 8:49Speaker 4: she's not trained, she's she's got a gorgeous voice. So
- 8:52Speaker 4: you hear her saying, we have a bunch of people singing.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Our jazz band is incredible. We're going to have some
- 8:57Speaker 4: orchestra groups perform. This is in celebration of the ten
- 9:00Speaker 4: years of orchestra, so we're wanting to honor all the
- 9:03Speaker 4: hard work that people have put in. We're going to
- 9:05Speaker 4: have food for everybody and a silent auction, and we're
- 9:08Speaker 4: going to have live dancing and live music and we'll
- 9:10Speaker 4: have some recorded music too, and for you, we'll have
- 9:13Speaker 4: a silent auction for people with a bunch of fun things.
- 9:16Speaker 4: We can't let people.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Know that's part of them have part of the fun.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll have a little surprise for some people when
- 9:21Speaker 4: they get there. And we just want to have a
- 9:23Speaker 4: good time of people.
- 9:24Speaker 3: And it says it's a masquerade ball, tell you we're
- 9:26Speaker 3: doing the whole Yeah.
- 9:29Speaker 6: So you can't come in unless you have a mask.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, and we're just one to get a mask
- 9:33Speaker 3: like that.
- 9:34Speaker 6: Well Amazon, you can get a mask on Amazon, phon
- 9:36Speaker 6: co Bucks. I don't care what kind of mask you show.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Up and hardcore about it.
- 9:40Speaker 9: Right.
- 9:41Speaker 10: Well, we're going to have.
- 9:43Speaker 6: A photo booth like a genuine red carpet so that
- 9:46Speaker 6: people can take photos. It's not going to be in vain.
- 9:49Speaker 6: So you know, show up looking absolutely stellar because your
- 9:53Speaker 6: photo is going to.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Be taken whether you like, whether you want it or not. Right,
- 9:56Speaker 3: So that's what you're saying. Where can people get tickets online?
- 10:00Speaker 6: So we have we have links that are being posted
- 10:03Speaker 6: on all of those social media's. We have invites being
- 10:06Speaker 6: sent out on Facebook. You can register online RSVP.
- 10:11Speaker 4: So yeah, we have an event on Facebook. Due to
- 10:14Speaker 4: the it's combined with the WVSU Music on Facebook and
- 10:17Speaker 4: the West Virginia State Orchestra on Facebook, and then the
- 10:21Speaker 4: link is online through the West Vinia State Foundation.
- 10:25Speaker 7: Okay, all right, it's listed as the name of the event.
- 10:27Speaker 3: All right, all right, hang out with me one second.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I got to take care of little business. Here to

- 10:58Speaker 3: two seventy four eighty eight or Rich line sixty six.
- 11:01Speaker 3: That's client with aktgmail dot com. You know, part of
- 11:04Speaker 3: the show that we do, ladies, is we get text
- 11:06Speaker 3: to the show and someone read a text that that
- 11:08Speaker 3: somebody texted. Okay, it says kids really should get into
- 11:11Speaker 3: music and marching band. Those were the best times I
- 11:13Speaker 3: had in junior high. In high school football games, conference parades,
- 11:17Speaker 3: field show competitions. They would be surprised at how many
- 11:19Speaker 3: of their favorite celebs were band geeks, including our own
- 11:22Speaker 3: Jennifer Garner, who played saxophone in the GW Patriots Marching
- 11:26Speaker 3: Band and she still plays.
- 11:28Speaker 6: Absolutely I totally agree. I think that marching band is
- 11:32Speaker 6: a really really cool thing. Ours is kind of small,
- 11:36Speaker 6: but we lead it with pride, and we really really
- 11:40Speaker 6: show up for our football games. We have a pet
- 11:44Speaker 6: band going on for basketball games. I think that's getting started.
- 11:47Speaker 6: So we have a relatively small school, and with that
- 11:50Speaker 6: comes sometimes not a whole lot of interest in certain
- 11:55Speaker 6: aspects because people just don't know that it's going on,
- 11:58Speaker 6: and so I think that's why as communication majors, we
- 12:02Speaker 6: tend to feel a little like, oh, but there's so
- 12:06Speaker 6: many things going on, how do people not know about this?
- 12:08Speaker 6: And so we try to create that movement in the
- 12:12Speaker 6: student body so that people know that these things are
- 12:15Speaker 6: going on, because a lot of people they just don't
- 12:17Speaker 6: understand that. We've got a jazz band, we have a
- 12:20Speaker 6: pet band, we have a marching band, we have an orchestra,
- 12:23Speaker 6: we have we had a show band there for a
- 12:26Speaker 6: little bit, and I was a part of that as well,
- 12:28Speaker 6: And the only difference between jazz band and show band
- 12:33Speaker 6: was that show band had a real, real tall black
- 12:37Speaker 6: dude in front of it. And his name is Phil
- 12:40Speaker 6: Washington and he swag for days.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Everybody knows Phil, Yes, and Phil Washington is he'sa A yeah.
- 12:48Speaker 3: You see him on TV doing the lottery numbers all
- 12:50Speaker 3: the time, and he's very, very accomplished. What do you
- 12:52Speaker 3: guys hope to do? I'm gonna ask him a personal
- 12:54Speaker 3: question of all three? What do you hope to do
- 12:55Speaker 3: after graduation? Let's start with you. What do you what
- 12:57Speaker 3: do you do? You know which we'll do after graduation.
- 13:00Speaker 3: I like to go into music marketing, okay, all right,
- 13:02Speaker 3: all right, what about you?
- 13:04Speaker 6: Honestly I want to dabble and just about anything I
- 13:08Speaker 6: can get my hands in that's communications related. So I
- 13:11Speaker 6: really love broadcasting.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Okay, I'm taking notes here, by the way, just so
- 13:15Speaker 3: you know, because we're always looking for people.
- 13:17Speaker 6: I'm a senior.
- 13:18Speaker 3: All right, all right, Jeff Jenkins, if you're listening upstairs
- 13:22Speaker 3: in the news department, come down and talk to this
- 13:23Speaker 3: young lady or talk to all three of them. But
- 13:25Speaker 3: go ahead, and I'm.
- 13:25Speaker 6: Sorry, yeah, no, you're fine. I but broadcasting radio. I genuinely,
- 13:31Speaker 6: really really love anything PR related. So I think it
- 13:34Speaker 6: would be so fun to project manage and to put
- 13:39Speaker 6: my hands into something that I can really feel good
- 13:41Speaker 6: about and you know, bigger causes and stuff like that.
- 13:45Speaker 3: So what about you.
- 13:47Speaker 4: I am on the same lay as these too. I've
- 13:50Speaker 4: looked into music marketing as well, but I love doing
- 13:53Speaker 4: all of the aspects of communications. I work for sports
- 13:56Speaker 4: information right now and I'm learning broadcasting and how to
- 14:00Speaker 4: do the audio and journalistic aspects of it.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Stephanie Poly is our producer and uh and she can
- 14:07Speaker 3: help with that too, just so you know.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I enjoy all of it.
- 14:10Speaker 3: But she went to marshall, is that okay?
- 14:13Speaker 4: You?
- 14:13Speaker 3: I guess all right, all right, what are you gonna do?
- 14:16Speaker 3: I let it slide all right again? I thought I
- 14:19Speaker 3: turned your microphone off. All right. So appreciate all three
- 14:22Speaker 3: of you been there. Give us the dates of the
- 14:23Speaker 3: concert again. We'll have you on before then, but give
- 14:25Speaker 3: us dates of the big event again January thirtieth, twenty
- 14:29Speaker 3: twenty six and ticket ser available on your social media. Yeah,
- 14:33Speaker 3: appreciate all three of you being here. Thanks a lot,
- 14:35Speaker 3: Thank you, And I'm serious. I think Jenkins is going
- 14:38Speaker 3: to come down and talk to you three about about
- 14:39Speaker 3: hiring today. So you may or not be at the concert.
- 14:42Speaker 3: You may be working that night, just so you know.

- 15:30Speaker 11: Dick Durbin. Now Durbin has a new scheme. He's doing
- 15:34Speaker 11: the dirty work to benefit corporate mega stores. Durbin's bill
- 15:37Speaker 11: could cut corners on your credit card security, putting your
- 15:41Speaker 11: personal data at risk. Big chain retailers and warehouse stores
- 15:45Speaker 11: want to inflate their profits, and Liberal Dick Durbin would
- 15:48Speaker 11: help them do it. Tell Senators say no to the
- 15:51Speaker 11: mega stores and Dick Durbin paid for by the Electronic
- 15:54Speaker 11: Payments Coalition.
- 15:55Speaker 10: This holiday season, Poka Valley is grateful for the trust

- 17:36Speaker 3: How you doing man, Good morning, happy thanksgiving him. Dave
- 17:38Speaker 3: backed that microphone down a little bit because I you know,
- 17:41Speaker 3: a couple of those communications major we're a little soft speaking.
- 17:44Speaker 3: We'll work on that, but not.
- 17:45Speaker 7: You, not me, not ye spoken.
- 17:48Speaker 3: He heard you, you know, coming up out of South
- 17:50Speaker 3: Hills a minute ago. All right, So Small Business Saturday
- 17:54Speaker 3: and listeners know my opinions on this. We should always
- 17:56Speaker 3: shop small and locally when possible. But we'll get in
- 18:01Speaker 3: that a little bit later on. Tony, you have been
- 18:03Speaker 3: a big part of Small Business Saturday for some time.
- 18:06Speaker 3: You were telling me a story on the phone yesterday
- 18:08Speaker 3: twenty ten.
- 18:08Speaker 7: We were the only store in West Virginia to participate
- 18:12Speaker 7: in Small Business Saturday. And it's an augur year of
- 18:14Speaker 7: twenty ten, and then it's slowly picked up and then
- 18:18Speaker 7: it's become a big thing. Like Black Friday. We don't
- 18:21Speaker 7: participate in Black Friday. We give our employees that day off,
- 18:24Speaker 7: give them a today rest because from Black from Small
- 18:28Speaker 7: Business Saturday until Christmas Eve, it's full throttle to.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Let the roll aids kick in on the day after. Well,
- 18:33Speaker 3: and let's be honest, I mean, Black Friday is not
- 18:35Speaker 3: the big deal that it used to be like twenty
- 18:37Speaker 3: years ago. Right, There's no.
- 18:41Speaker 7: When I was Cabbage Patch kids and you know all
- 18:44Speaker 7: there's different crazy toys that I bought when my kids
- 18:46Speaker 7: were young. Yeah, but yeah, so there's nothing really like that,
- 18:50Speaker 7: and there's no more. I mean, one hundred dollars television
- 18:52Speaker 7: is like a normal price now.
- 18:54Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Yeah, but but I mean I just remember, you know,
- 18:57Speaker 3: what it used to be like. And I was always working,
- 19:00Speaker 3: so I you know, doing it all on Doring in
- 19:02Speaker 3: the morning show. My Black Friday was me being on
- 19:04Speaker 3: the air at you know, five point thirty in the morning.
- 19:06Speaker 3: But I can remember, you know, the news reports of
- 19:08Speaker 3: how it used to be wild, and it's not that
- 19:10Speaker 3: way anymore. But small business Saturday has just continued to
- 19:13Speaker 3: get bigger and big. I had the mayor of Hurricane
- 19:15Speaker 3: on the show on Monday, and then Hurricane is a
- 19:18Speaker 3: very very small town. Okay, they go all out for it.
- 19:21Speaker 3: I mean, you can't walk down the streets of Hurricane
- 19:23Speaker 3: for their you know, eight nine businesses that they have.
- 19:26Speaker 3: And of course the valley parks got stuff going on
- 19:28Speaker 3: and throughout Day's valley. I know South Charleston saying everybody's
- 19:30Speaker 3: got stuff a big deal.
- 19:32Speaker 7: And it's the second largest volume day in the Christmas season.
- 19:36Speaker 7: The biggest is always and always has been the Saturday
- 19:40Speaker 7: before Christmas, no matter where it falls with Christmas. Sometimes
- 19:43Speaker 7: it's Christmas Eve that still be the biggest retail day.
- 19:47Speaker 7: And the Christmas season again, it's a short window this year.
- 19:50Speaker 7: We only have four Saturdays to get it done this year,
- 19:55Speaker 7: two years back to back, so retail sales will reflect
- 19:58Speaker 7: that when they report. Then sometimes we get five weeks.
- 20:02Speaker 7: Generally it depends just when Thanksgiving falls.
- 20:04Speaker 3: And here's here's one of the knocks that I hear
- 20:08Speaker 3: about Charleston. There's nowhere to shop.
- 20:12Speaker 7: There's nowhere to those are the people who never come
- 20:14Speaker 7: to Charleston. They I mean, they obviously don't on my street.
- 20:17Speaker 7: I'm on a corner of Haile in Virginia. If you
- 20:20Speaker 7: walk two blocks north, there's every storefront is filled and
- 20:24Speaker 7: full of great little shops and restaurants. Capitol Street is
- 20:28Speaker 7: not a big retail center, but there's some great eateries there.
- 20:30Speaker 7: There's a couple of retail stores there. There are still
- 20:34Speaker 7: a couple of stores left in the mall here. But
- 20:36Speaker 7: then also you go just right up the hill there
- 20:39Speaker 7: and you have Bridge Road Shopping are great specialty stores
- 20:42Speaker 7: up there, fantastic. It's the way of retailing nowadays. There's
- 20:46Speaker 7: a mixture of online, small shopping areas and then larger
- 20:50Speaker 7: retail areas like South Ridge, which is huge. Everybody talks
- 20:54Speaker 7: you know, the hold the mall in Huntington. Well, Huntington
- 20:56Speaker 7: Mall wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the five times
- 20:59Speaker 7: as many stores that are on out parcels and are
- 21:02Speaker 7: surrounding it. It's just the way it is. People just
- 21:04Speaker 7: don't shop at enclosed malls anymore.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Just this fact and the interesting thing about that, to mean,
- 21:09Speaker 3: we're talking to Tony the Taylor Parnzino about small business Saturday.
- 21:13Speaker 3: The interesting thing about that is is that you know,
- 21:15Speaker 3: you and I are roughly we Okay, no, you're a
- 21:17Speaker 3: lot older than me. But but we remember the heydays
- 21:21Speaker 3: of the malls, and it didn't have to be the town,
- 21:23Speaker 3: so it could be any mall across America and going
- 21:25Speaker 3: to the mall. Fast times at Ridgemont High, you know
- 21:27Speaker 3: which the movie that changed my life by the way,
- 21:29Speaker 3: Uh I was cool act Yeah, yeah, well bb Kate's
- 21:33Speaker 3: pool scene. That's all I got to say about that
- 21:35Speaker 3: single handedly propelled me into puberty.
- 21:37Speaker 8: Uh.
- 21:38Speaker 3: But but I but I will say that the days
- 21:40Speaker 3: of going people still go to malls. Okay, they still do. However, Uh,
- 21:45Speaker 3: the bigger we've gotten, the smaller we've gotten, because there's
- 21:49Speaker 3: people that still love to go to these small shops,
- 21:52Speaker 3: just like the ones you mentioned in Charleston. And you
- 21:54Speaker 3: do incredible business down there, but you're still considered small
- 21:57Speaker 3: business obviously, but you but you're one though, and there
- 22:00Speaker 3: are several others that have kind of bridged that gap
- 22:03Speaker 3: between Okay, you can still come in and just look around,
- 22:06Speaker 3: but you also do things online. You also do things
- 22:10Speaker 3: you can do trunk shows and things of that nature.
- 22:12Speaker 3: So I think the successful business in twenties twenty five
- 22:15Speaker 3: Tony had about to be twenty twenty six has got
- 22:17Speaker 3: to kind of be a marriage of all of them.
- 22:19Speaker 7: You have to be omni channel if you're in retail,
- 22:21Speaker 7: no matter what size, I'm small to large. If you
- 22:23Speaker 7: have no Internet presence, you're not in business. We have
- 22:27Speaker 7: a very robust online store and ship all over the
- 22:30Speaker 7: country eight or nine packages a day. We're one of
- 22:35Speaker 7: the larger, probably single store online retailers in the country
- 22:39Speaker 7: for men's clothing. I sold three Oxford suits online ship
- 22:43Speaker 7: to Massachusetts. One went to Pennsylvania.
- 22:45Speaker 3: And these are people that people you need to realize.
- 22:47Speaker 3: These are people that in many cases don't have any
- 22:49Speaker 3: ties to this area. They're not from Charleston and said, well,
- 22:52Speaker 3: I still want to shop with Tony or whatever. The
- 22:54Speaker 3: people that just did the the Google machine search engine
- 22:57Speaker 3: and found you, you know.
- 22:58Speaker 7: And what's amusing to me sometimes is I recognize some
- 23:00Speaker 7: of the names I'm sending to. Uh, there'll be celebrities,
- 23:04Speaker 7: there'll be business type I mean other than me, other
- 23:06Speaker 7: than well, yeah, well you you walk in the store.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Okay, that's truely true with your entourage. But yeah, yeah,
- 23:12Speaker 3: but so.
- 23:13Speaker 7: It's just fascinating to me. But that's that's the way
- 23:15Speaker 7: it is, and it's it's fun and it keeps us going.
- 23:18Speaker 7: I mean, it really does. But again, it used to
- 23:21Speaker 7: be more than our own, than our in store business,
- 23:24Speaker 7: and now our in store business has surpass because Charleston again,
- 23:28Speaker 7: people are coming here. We have to collect your data.
- 23:31Speaker 7: I have people moving here all the time, and these
- 23:33Speaker 7: are the people you want moving here, professionals and it's
- 23:36Speaker 7: fantastic and people can say no. But the housing situation
- 23:40Speaker 7: reflects that there's a shortage of houses. There's a reason
- 23:43Speaker 7: there's a shortage of house. Yeah, and people are moving here.
- 23:46Speaker 7: And it's not just Charleston. I mean it goes on
- 23:47Speaker 7: down through the valley. Well, the whole thing is Charleston. Yeah, people,
- 23:51Speaker 7: this border thing, you're going across the board, you know,
- 23:53Speaker 7: I mean Charleston has forty eight thousand people. Then you
- 23:56Speaker 7: cross over the river and you got another thirty thousand
- 23:58Speaker 7: added to they're really are trading area is about six
- 24:02Speaker 7: hundred and fifty thousand people. Is our trading right now,
- 24:05Speaker 7: which is the Metro Valley and Logan we go to Pikeville.
- 24:09Speaker 7: That's that's pretty much. If you're in retail, that's you're trading, right.
- 24:11Speaker 3: We talked to Tony the Taylor appearing Zino about small
- 24:15Speaker 3: Business Saturday to Dave Allen showing five a d Live
- 24:17Speaker 3: broad to you part by Live Healthy West Virginia presented
- 24:19Speaker 3: by WVU Madison, a podcast promoting healthier lifestyles. Check avalate
- 24:23Speaker 3: this episode's wv Metronews dot com under the podcast menu.
- 24:26Speaker 3: So what small Business Saturday look like for Tony the Taylor.
- 24:29Speaker 7: We have great promotions again. Quarter zips are hot. That's
- 24:32Speaker 7: the hot item. That's the that's the cabbage patch kid
- 24:35Speaker 7: apparently of Christmas twenty twenty.
- 24:37Speaker 3: But you're not gonna get a kidney injured trying to
- 24:39Speaker 3: find one.
- 24:41Speaker 7: We're doing a buy one, get one free on all
- 24:43Speaker 7: sweaters that day in store only on that but we
- 24:46Speaker 7: have outerwear at half price. We have great selection of shoes,
- 24:49Speaker 7: got a special selection of Johnson and Murphy's that are
- 24:51Speaker 7: seventy nine ninety nine for a dress roof, you need
- 24:54Speaker 7: a nice banner black dress, jew some other great deals
- 24:59Speaker 7: going on. You can check our website at Bestmaster Taylor
- 25:01Speaker 7: dot com for that and then we're ready to go.
- 25:05Speaker 7: Don't forget to come downtown for Holly Jolly Bray on
- 25:08Speaker 7: Friday of Art Walk. We are not open for this,
- 25:10Speaker 7: but so I can go out and actually enjoy it.
- 25:13Speaker 7: Some great events we have the Holiday Shopping Village going
- 25:17Speaker 7: on Slack Plaza, and you know, don't forget to stop
- 25:21Speaker 7: in my buddy at Sam's Uptown for a nice great
- 25:23Speaker 7: meal and a cocktail and walk around pod. It will
- 25:26Speaker 7: be an effect and it would be a great time.
- 25:28Speaker 3: And again, you know, I had you on to talk
- 25:31Speaker 3: about your business because you're, you know, kind of up
- 25:32Speaker 3: sponsored this show, but I also wanted you to hit
- 25:35Speaker 3: on the other businesses, which you've done, because it's not
- 25:37Speaker 3: just it's not just the Tony the Taylor Show. I
- 25:39Speaker 3: mean everybody else is everybody. Everybody's taking part of it.
- 25:43Speaker 3: And again, that vibrant downtown and I think people kind
- 25:46Speaker 3: of you know, and Holly Jolly Bray has been such
- 25:48Speaker 3: a big part of that over the last you know,
- 25:50Speaker 3: the last holiday seas.
- 25:51Speaker 7: I have to tell you Kevin Madison and Morgan Morrison
- 25:53Speaker 7: they work their tails off year round for this event
- 25:58Speaker 7: and every year they make it better and better and better.
- 26:00Speaker 7: And I'm pumped for the drone show that last year
- 26:03Speaker 7: was good, this year it's going to be spectacular.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, we had a text here for you and
- 26:07Speaker 3: that says, uh, how do you know measurements are accurate
- 26:10Speaker 3: if you're going by what someone posts on an online order.
- 26:14Speaker 7: Well, most things we sell online are belts, shoes, sports wear.
- 26:20Speaker 7: Very rarely we get things that we were don't do
- 26:23Speaker 7: anything custom made online except for belts. We have custom
- 26:25Speaker 7: belts online and we call them and that's the way
- 26:29Speaker 7: it is, or I will go visit them. Most we
- 26:31Speaker 7: don't really sell custom shirts online or that's it's impossible
- 26:35Speaker 7: to do accurately.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Well, And the great thing I think about about your
- 26:40Speaker 3: store is is people can go in there and they
- 26:45Speaker 3: can shop and not you know, you guys are experts.
- 26:48Speaker 3: You and Ryan, you know you do a great job.
- 26:50Speaker 3: And you go in and you know, okay, I gotta
- 26:53Speaker 3: I got a formal event coming up. Help me. And
- 26:56Speaker 3: I know I've hung out at your store enough to
- 26:59Speaker 3: know that that you get a lot of that people
- 27:01Speaker 3: coming in or put somebody bringing a kid in for
- 27:03Speaker 3: a Christmas formal or something like that, and and and
- 27:06Speaker 3: they don't know. What they don't know is that they.
- 27:07Speaker 7: Don't even weddings. You know, we do three or four
- 27:10Speaker 7: weddings weekend, which which is a huge business. We're probably
- 27:14Speaker 7: the largest tuxied to rental place in the thing. Well
- 27:17Speaker 7: we're cheaper than everybody else and we do it better
- 27:19Speaker 7: than everybody else. So it's it's uh, you know, it's
- 27:23Speaker 7: just fun. And we interview you first. We just want
- 27:26Speaker 7: to give you something. We want to make sure you
- 27:27Speaker 7: look good and feel good when you leave. And AM
- 27:29Speaker 7: sure event that's important, look good and feel good.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Now you're a Charleston guy, I mean, born, born in bred,
- 27:36Speaker 3: and like what I always said, you're born and bred.
- 27:38Speaker 3: When you die, you'll be Charleston dead. But uh, talk
- 27:42Speaker 3: about people always want to look back on any town
- 27:45Speaker 3: Tony and they all want to say, well this I
- 27:47Speaker 3: remember how it how it used to be, and that's okay.
- 27:50Speaker 3: People have a tendency to look back through rose colored
- 27:53Speaker 3: glasses sometimes, you know, and it's not always like It's
- 27:55Speaker 3: like with music. You know, all the music of the
- 27:57Speaker 3: eighties was the best of all. It really was. It
- 28:00Speaker 3: really was. I mean, but we look about it and
- 28:02Speaker 3: you know, but but talk about what it was like
- 28:05Speaker 3: and there's still a lot of positive things going on,
- 28:07Speaker 3: But talk about growing up in Charleston East End kid
- 28:09Speaker 3: and what Charleston was like. And my point is not
- 28:13Speaker 3: to say it was better then than it is now.
- 28:15Speaker 3: I'm just saying it's just different.
- 28:17Speaker 7: It's just different. It's just the way it is. I
- 28:18Speaker 7: mean again, And my dad started the store in nineteen
- 28:22Speaker 7: seventy four and I had to go to work. I
- 28:24Speaker 7: was nine years old, and downtown was thriving. It was busy,
- 28:28Speaker 7: and it's where everything wasn't Its like every downtown in
- 28:30Speaker 7: America was like that. And then the mall was built,
- 28:33Speaker 7: and Charleston was kind of on the forefront of building
- 28:36Speaker 7: the mall downtown rather than out in the outskirts, which
- 28:39Speaker 7: sucked down life out of downtown. Well, this mall did
- 28:42Speaker 7: suck the life out of downtown just four or five
- 28:45Speaker 7: blocks away. However, it we stayed downtown because we're downtown.
- 28:51Speaker 7: Store men don't go to shopping malls. And we thrived
- 28:55Speaker 7: and thrived and grew and grew and grew, and then
- 28:58Speaker 7: investment came downtown professionals building these buildings rehaving them, which
- 29:03Speaker 7: puts people down there. And then what happens. Restaurants open
- 29:07Speaker 7: up and service stores open up and it's just a
- 29:10Speaker 7: part of retailing. Then mall started to decline in the
- 29:13Speaker 7: late nineties. It's just the reality of it all over America,
- 29:17Speaker 7: not just in Charleston. And then strips shopping centers started
- 29:21Speaker 7: opening up on the outskirts. If you go to Columbus,
- 29:24Speaker 7: you're right, Oh, I go to go to Easton and
- 29:26Speaker 7: go to Columbus. That's not an indoor mall. It's an
- 29:28Speaker 7: outdoor mall. And the people who owned the Town Center
- 29:32Speaker 7: when they sold their portfolio, except for the Town Center
- 29:35Speaker 7: because it was heavily in debt. The group of the
- 29:37Speaker 7: Australian Big Mall group, every mall they bought of the
- 29:40Speaker 7: twenty four that twenty five malls of twenty four they bought,
- 29:43Speaker 7: they tore them all down and turned them into outdoor
- 29:46Speaker 7: shopping many downtowns basically, And that's just the way it is.
- 29:50Speaker 7: It's all over the country. The Internet really, you know,
- 29:54Speaker 7: I might have hurt malls a little bit. However, what
- 29:58Speaker 7: we see now is people will shop on our store
- 30:03Speaker 7: locally on the internet and then come and pick it
- 30:05Speaker 7: up in the store and then augment their purchase and
- 30:09Speaker 7: a lot of a lot of larger retailers are seeing
- 30:12Speaker 7: that if you're paying attention and reading like the Wall
- 30:14Speaker 7: Street Journal about retailing and well, and.
- 30:16Speaker 3: You're a person that is never shy to give opinions.
- 30:19Speaker 3: So I'm gonna I'm gonna ask you your opinion of
- 30:22Speaker 3: the town Center, the current State town Center.
- 30:26Speaker 7: It is sad to me what the other way it
- 30:30Speaker 7: will ever work. It just needs to be leveled and
- 30:32Speaker 7: rebuilt into an entertainment and arts district. You're right beside
- 30:36Speaker 7: one hundred million dollar facility. You need restaurants, you need
- 30:41Speaker 7: entertainment style stores. That's the only way I work. People
- 30:45Speaker 7: who want to buy and have all these ideas, they're
- 30:47Speaker 7: just clueless to retail. They have zero idea what they're
- 30:50Speaker 7: doing we're thinking about. I like people who think about it,
- 30:52Speaker 7: but again their ideas are just shot.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Well. I mean, it was originally, you know, and this
- 30:59Speaker 3: has gone back and forth. We've had a commissioner Silango
- 31:01Speaker 3: and the mayor and others on to talk about this
- 31:03Speaker 3: that originally we talked about taking the town Center and
- 31:06Speaker 3: you know, making it into an aquatic center, and then
- 31:09Speaker 3: the funding you know, kind of went away. And that's
- 31:12Speaker 3: still it's still got something's still going to happen. Uh there,
- 31:14Speaker 3: But you got to understand that that mall is owned
- 31:17Speaker 3: by a private company as it stands right now, and
- 31:20Speaker 3: that private company, as long as they're paying their taxes
- 31:24Speaker 3: and as long as they're not, there's no you know,
- 31:26Speaker 3: there's not any major issues there. Not really a lot
- 31:29Speaker 3: of people can do. I don't understand their business model.
- 31:31Speaker 3: They've done this in other places. The whole group is
- 31:33Speaker 3: purchased malls and and let them and just let them decline.
- 31:36Speaker 3: That's what they do for tax reasons. I suppose. I
- 31:38Speaker 3: don't know, and I say that to say I agree
- 31:42Speaker 3: with you one hundred percent. I am a supporter of
- 31:44Speaker 3: something for that mall. That's not I mean. And to
- 31:46Speaker 3: these people that say, Tony, well, if we just put
- 31:48Speaker 3: a blank in there, it was David Busters. Uh you know,
- 31:51Speaker 3: God Blest, one of my former producers. If they just
- 31:53Speaker 3: put a David Busters, they saved them all. If we
- 31:55Speaker 3: just put a you know whatever, No, not one store
- 31:58Speaker 3: is not going to save them all. It's not about
- 32:00Speaker 3: it needs to be an entire, an entire entertainment complex.
- 32:04Speaker 3: What needs to be leveled. Okay, but when you have
- 32:07Speaker 3: these people that come in for these big events like
- 32:09Speaker 3: at it, Shiney and whatever. They may play a game
- 32:13Speaker 3: at six o'clock on a Friday night and not play
- 32:16Speaker 3: another one till one o'clock on Sunday. What are they
- 32:18Speaker 3: gonna do. They're not gonna sit in a hotel room.
- 32:19Speaker 3: They got to have something. Come down to Tony the
- 32:21Speaker 3: Taylor we do. We get tons, exactly tons of direct
- 32:25Speaker 3: business from these soccer tournaments and softball tournaments in these
- 32:29Speaker 3: large youth sports. If I may talk about the sports
- 32:32Speaker 3: complex real quick, we're we're just waiting on a federal funding.
- 32:35Speaker 3: We are waiting Shelley Moore and at the time Senator Mansion.
- 32:39Speaker 3: We have an ear mark, and these guys in Washington
- 32:41Speaker 3: can't get their stuff together and to get a budget done.
- 32:45Speaker 3: And when it's done, the earmark will pop up and
- 32:47Speaker 3: we will get it and then we can finish. We've
- 32:49Speaker 3: done our part. The city of Charleston in the county
- 32:51Speaker 3: has done their part, and we're just waiting for your
- 32:54Speaker 3: congress people who are douless to do their part and
- 32:59Speaker 3: that and then we'll move forward. These things just aren't
- 33:02Speaker 3: built overnight. In the Aquatic Center, there's a reason they're
- 33:08Speaker 3: all nonprofit because they are abhorribly expensive and the maintenance
- 33:11Speaker 3: on them is out of control.
- 33:12Speaker 7: I can see that, and every private one has obviously.
- 33:15Speaker 7: I mean, just just do a little reading and research.
- 33:20Speaker 7: There's money pits because again they're dealing with water. I
- 33:22Speaker 7: think it'd be great, but who's going to pay for it?
- 33:24Speaker 7: Are you willing to pay? Are you willing to pay
- 33:27Speaker 7: more taxes to have that? And nobody is they're not.
- 33:32Speaker 3: He's never shied with opinions. That's one of the reason
- 33:34Speaker 3: why you and I get along so well. I think,
- 33:36Speaker 3: all right, tell us, let's recap the small business Saturday again.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Your business is going to be closed tomorrow and Friday.

- 34:20Speaker 7: to me.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Well you know you all right, I appreciate it. Text

- 34:30Speaker 3: but we can't support them all.
- 34:32Speaker 7: Correct because stores don't are especially stores don't located in malls.
- 34:37Speaker 7: That's right.

- 39:30Speaker 3: but give those who may not know who you are.
- 39:32Speaker 3: Give us your background.
- 39:33Speaker 15: Sure, born and raised in Charleston. Grew up, I guess
- 39:36Speaker 15: the first in South Charleston, then the West side, and
- 39:39Speaker 15: then I'm an Eastern Connall County product. Roots duke, last
- 39:42Speaker 15: class of DuPont High School. We shut it down.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Okay, they said, we're done afteress.
- 39:47Speaker 10: That's it.
- 39:48Speaker 15: So yeah, So I've my roots are in Charleston. We
- 39:51Speaker 15: came back in two thousand and nine. My wife is
- 39:53Speaker 15: from Pittsburgh and she came back with you. We had
- 39:55Speaker 15: our son here. Worked at the Charleston Daily Mel then
- 39:58Speaker 15: when the Gazette and Daily Mail emerged, was the sports
- 40:02Speaker 15: editor there, and then spent my last ten years in
- 40:05Speaker 15: collegiate athletics, first at Marshall University and for the past
- 40:08Speaker 15: fifteen months at the Mountain East Conference. So I've been
- 40:10Speaker 15: at the Division one, Division two level of college athletics,
- 40:12Speaker 15: so very non linear journey here. But I'm back to
- 40:16Speaker 15: you know, back home, you know. And I grew up
- 40:19Speaker 15: running around Plaza East and going to Capital Market when
- 40:23Speaker 15: it was still a recycling facility, like you know, so
- 40:26Speaker 15: you know, I understand the history there and the tradition
- 40:29Speaker 15: and the nostalgia that comes with it. And when I
- 40:31Speaker 15: saw it, you know, I just I went after it
- 40:34Speaker 15: with gusto.
- 40:34Speaker 3: What was it that made that made it appealing to you?
- 40:37Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean the the the you know, we we
- 40:40Speaker 15: took my son there when he was you know, when
- 40:43Speaker 15: he was a toddler. And you know, I think, you know,
- 40:48Speaker 15: convincing people that I'm not just a sports guy was
- 40:50Speaker 15: a thing that I was at least concerned about. The
- 40:53Speaker 15: the hiring committee seemed less concerned about it as I
- 40:56Speaker 15: went through. But you know, I'm a music guy, I'm
- 40:59Speaker 15: an arts guy. I love museums, I love food. You know,
- 41:03Speaker 15: my interests are varied. And you know, Capital Market for
- 41:06Speaker 15: us was you know, uh, you know, a cornerstone of
- 41:09Speaker 15: Charleston and it's where we took you know, out of town,
- 41:11Speaker 15: visited outse That's where we you know, it's it's what
- 41:14Speaker 15: we wanted when we wanted to showcase Charleston, what we
- 41:16Speaker 15: were about.
- 41:16Speaker 3: That's where we went. I was going to say, because
- 41:18Speaker 3: whenever people come to Charleston, my experience has been and
- 41:21Speaker 3: my wife's company would say the same thing. When they
- 41:23Speaker 3: came to Charleston, they'd say, well, you know, we have
- 41:26Speaker 3: time in the evening, where do we need to go?
- 41:27Speaker 3: That was always number one. You got to go to
- 41:29Speaker 3: Capitol Market one hundred percent.
- 41:30Speaker 15: So there's established brand there and I have an appreciation
- 41:34Speaker 15: for that nostalgia, the memories that people make, you know,
- 41:37Speaker 15: sorting through through pictures, I can see my son with pumpkins.
- 41:40Speaker 15: We went there and picked out our Christmas trees. You know,
- 41:43Speaker 15: when we lived in South Hills in Charleston, it was
- 41:45Speaker 15: always a big thing for me to have the hanging flowers,
- 41:48Speaker 15: you know, So my wife and I would go and
- 41:50Speaker 15: pick out the flowers, and you know, we'd go into
- 41:53Speaker 15: inside the Capital Market. We were there for an event
- 41:55Speaker 15: a few weeks ago, and my son wanted to go
- 41:56Speaker 15: in and get something from the sushi garden, you know,
- 41:59Speaker 15: so like it's just it has everything, and it's everything
- 42:03Speaker 15: that I want Charleston to be and so to kind
- 42:06Speaker 15: of be a caretaker of it, like it's a really
- 42:08Speaker 15: big deal to me.
- 42:09Speaker 3: What is your vision for Capitol Market?
- 42:10Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean we want to grow.
- 42:12Speaker 3: There's challenges there.
- 42:14Speaker 15: There's built in challenges as far as it being kind
- 42:16Speaker 15: of landlocked on all four sides with parking lots or
- 42:20Speaker 15: Smith Street. But we want to grow, find ways to grow,
- 42:23Speaker 15: find ways to engage the community more and create that
- 42:28Speaker 15: next generation of people who care about the market. You know,
- 42:31Speaker 15: that's you know, my son's thirteen years old, so I
- 42:34Speaker 15: want him to grow up and have children and that's
- 42:37Speaker 15: their destination on the weekends or the evenings or whatever.
- 42:41Speaker 15: So I want it to be a really family friendly
- 42:43Speaker 15: place and you know, a place where everybody goes like
- 42:46Speaker 15: you're saying, and kind of be that that gem of Charleston.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Can you hang out with me here one second? Yeah,
- 42:52Speaker 3: because here's a shocker. We went a little bit long
- 42:54Speaker 3: with Tony the Taylor. That's fine, imagine that Tony's worth it. No,
- 42:57Speaker 3: he's not all right. I want to take a break.

- 46:21Speaker 15: we're just getting you know, getting the market all festive.
- 46:24Speaker 15: I mean there's there's been people painting windows, and the
- 46:27Speaker 15: Christmas trees are there, and there's you know, lights everywhere,
- 46:30Speaker 15: and of course, uh you know we're gonna go judge
- 46:33Speaker 15: Christmas trees after this, you know at Holly Jolly Braley.
- 46:36Speaker 15: So we're involved with that and it's just a really
- 46:39Speaker 15: exciting time to you know, dive in with with two feet.
- 46:42Speaker 3: And you talk about and this is what Tony and
- 46:44Speaker 3: I we're talking about a little earlier about Charleston really
- 46:47Speaker 3: becoming a holiday Christmas destination. I mean between Holly Jolly
- 46:53Speaker 3: Brawley and the Light the night and just everything else
- 46:58Speaker 3: through the largest Christmas parade around that'll be next week,
- 47:01Speaker 3: and what's going on at Capital Market, and just I
- 47:04Speaker 3: mean there's so many things going on in Charleston at
- 47:07Speaker 3: one time. For Christmas.
- 47:08Speaker 15: Yeah, I got my market email set up and the calendar. Candice,
- 47:13Speaker 15: the director of Market and Communications at the Capital Market,
- 47:16Speaker 15: started adding things to my calendar and I was like
- 47:18Speaker 15: flipping through and I was like, Okay, this event's that night,
- 47:20Speaker 15: this of the parades, this night the market mingles, this night,
- 47:24Speaker 15: it's loaded. And I think that speaks well of Charleston
- 47:27Speaker 15: that there's always something going on and the synergy that
- 47:30Speaker 15: the market has with downtown and you know, there's there's
- 47:33Speaker 15: your trolley's going around taking you from place to place,
- 47:36Speaker 15: and there's vendors and there's music, and there's something to
- 47:40Speaker 15: do every night, you know, this weekend with the tree
- 47:42Speaker 15: lighting ceremony. So I think it's really cool the vibe
- 47:45Speaker 15: and the momentum that Charleston has, especially around the holidays.
- 47:47Speaker 3: Talking to Chuck mcgild again, who is the new director
- 47:50Speaker 3: of a Capital Market, I want to throw this in here,
- 47:52Speaker 3: this little promotion that we're going to be doing starting
- 47:54Speaker 3: next week. You can save up to sixty percent off.
- 47:58Speaker 3: This is wv Bargains won't be caught. Save up to
- 48:00Speaker 3: sixty percent off on items like certificates to Eddie's Tyron Service,
- 48:02Speaker 3: pest control services from Spotlight Pest Control, gas fireplaces from Fireside,
- 48:07Speaker 3: and patio tent rentals from Quantum, sixty percent off car
- 48:10Speaker 3: detailing services from Oak Citiado, Spa, jewelry certificates from pettit
- 48:13Speaker 3: jwelry tax services from Penny Pincher, certificates to Dunbar Furniture,
- 48:16Speaker 3: and more items all across the valley and across the state,
- 48:19Speaker 3: really across state lines too in our surrounding states where
- 48:23Speaker 3: we have WVRC media properties. And again it's going to
- 48:26Speaker 3: kick off next Monday. It'll run through the fifth wv
- 48:28Speaker 3: Bargains dot Com. Wv Bargains is a WVRC media promotion,
- 48:32Speaker 3: all right. So we talked about some of the struggles
- 48:35Speaker 3: of capital market, mainly not of your own doing but
- 48:38Speaker 3: or the market's under end, but just because you are
- 48:40Speaker 3: kind of landlocked there. But on your wish list and
- 48:43Speaker 3: I'm not saying these are going to be promises from
- 48:45Speaker 3: Chuck McGill, okay, but on your wish list, what would
- 48:49Speaker 3: you like to see?
- 48:50Speaker 15: I think I've been really encouraged. So I've been in
- 48:53Speaker 15: Huntington for nine years, but we've come back all the
- 48:55Speaker 15: time because Charleston is my home. My mom and dad
- 48:57Speaker 15: are here, my aunts and uncles are here, cousins are here,
- 49:00Speaker 15: and what I've seen from the downtown and how you know,
- 49:04Speaker 15: a rising tide lists all boats situation, so you get
- 49:07Speaker 15: five Street and then you get short Story for example.
- 49:10Speaker 15: I think having the area around the market also lifted
- 49:15Speaker 15: up would benefit the market. Yeah, so I think that's
- 49:17Speaker 15: a very long term, ambitious goal. But with the ballpark
- 49:21Speaker 15: there and the light the night and all that brings
- 49:24Speaker 15: and kind of the the natural flow to the market,
- 49:28Speaker 15: if if, if the area around the market was also enhanced,
- 49:32Speaker 15: I think that would benefit the market a lot. With
- 49:34Speaker 15: its proximity to the interstate and the you know, the
- 49:37Speaker 15: interchanges there and the easy on and off. I would
- 49:40Speaker 15: love to see that area kind of lifted up, like
- 49:43Speaker 15: the downtown's been listed lifted up. But that's a you know,
- 49:45Speaker 15: very long way. It's outside of my control exactly exactly.
- 49:48Speaker 3: But that's that's why we call it a wish list. Yeah,
- 49:50Speaker 3: you know, absolutely, And you're talking about being in Huntington,
- 49:53Speaker 3: I think it's amazing what they have done with Pullman
- 49:55Speaker 3: Square in Huntington because I was a student at Marshall
- 49:57Speaker 3: in the early nineteen nineties and we all remember or
- 50:00Speaker 3: the super Block. We've been talked about going back to
- 50:02Speaker 3: the eighties. They're gonna build this big thing down and
- 50:04Speaker 3: it was just promise after promise, broke it and then
- 50:07Speaker 3: lo and behold, one day Pullman Square pops up and
- 50:09Speaker 3: it has totally revitalized that area absolutely, And that's a
- 50:13Speaker 3: great blueprint for us to follow. And I've watched that,
- 50:16Speaker 3: you know, I went to Huntington in twenty sixteen and
- 50:18Speaker 3: was able to watch that kind of evolve over the years.
- 50:21Speaker 3: So that's that's, you know, in in game, that would
- 50:24Speaker 3: be my top goal. All right, well, Chuck, I appreciate
- 50:28Speaker 3: you stopping by the show, and I know you're going
- 50:30Speaker 3: to do great things over there. You've got a great
- 50:32Speaker 3: marketing director and Candaice, but you also got a great
- 50:34Speaker 3: board of directors over there. Big shout out to my
- 50:36Speaker 3: man Steve Keith and then he gu us over there.
- 50:38Speaker 3: So we'll let you get out of here and let
- 50:39Speaker 3: you go downtown and judge from Christmas trees and we'll
- 50:42Speaker 3: have you on a few more times between now and Christmas,
- 50:44Speaker 3: and of course you're always welcome here throughout not the year.
- 50:46Speaker 3: Appreciate you man. All right, thank you, Dave, all right,
- 50:48Speaker 3: thanks a lot. We're gonna transition over talking to my
- 50:50Speaker 3: man TJ. Meadows coming up in talk line at the top.
- 50:53Speaker 3: Hang out with me just once. Can you give me
- 50:55Speaker 3: like two or three minutes because I need to talk
- 50:56Speaker 3: to you a little bit. Okay, but I'm gonna turn
- 50:58Speaker 3: your microphone off now. How's that all right? DJ Meadows
- 51:02Speaker 3: is here? What you got on talking? It's the after show, buddy,
- 51:04Speaker 3: that's what you stayed around for, the after show, the
- 51:07Speaker 3: after party.
- 51:09Speaker 16: A ten oh six E. Gordon Ghee joins us today.
- 51:12Speaker 16: You know, doctor Gee penned another commentary that was in
- 51:15Speaker 16: the Hill talking about college athletics.
- 51:17Speaker 3: He's been talking more.
- 51:19Speaker 16: Now that he's not a president, which I really enjoy.
- 51:22Speaker 3: So we're gonna get into that with Gordon.
- 51:23Speaker 16: We'll probably talk Thanksgiving in a host of other things
- 51:26Speaker 16: as well with him. Bridget Lambert of the West Virginia
- 51:28Speaker 16: Retailers Association on Black Friday joins us at ten thirty.
- 51:31Speaker 16: Hobby's in at eleven six. He's got issues with what
- 51:34Speaker 16: the CDC has done about Vaccine Mornings courtesy of Robert
- 51:38Speaker 16: Kennedy Junior. So we'll talk about that and I'm sure
- 51:42Speaker 16: other you know, top like, there's nothing to talk about now,
- 51:45Speaker 16: there's nothing going on that Hobby would want to opine about.
- 51:48Speaker 16: My buddy Mike McKenna has a great piece out. He's
- 51:51Speaker 16: a columnist for the Washington Times talking about Thanksgiving. We'll
- 51:55Speaker 16: speak with him on that. I want to pick his
- 51:57Speaker 16: brain on a few things Trump. You know, he used
- 51:59Speaker 16: to be he was in the Trump administration during the
- 52:01Speaker 16: first term, and so he's got that unique perspective as well.
- 52:05Speaker 16: I want to talk about about tariffs, I want to
- 52:07Speaker 16: talk about going after Comy and several other things with
- 52:12Speaker 16: Mike as well.
- 52:12Speaker 3: All right now, Programming note, there will be no local
- 52:15Speaker 3: show of mine tomorrow and Friday. I'll be back on Monday,
- 52:18Speaker 3: but Metro News Midday is coming up later today. We'll
- 52:20Speaker 3: have a best of Metro News Midday tomorrow and then
- 52:22Speaker 3: a live show on Friday. No Amanda Baron on Friday
- 52:25Speaker 3: for Metro News Midday. I will be here. Speedy Bevans
- 52:28Speaker 3: Broadcasting Legend will be my guest.
- 52:31Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 52:31Speaker 3: Pretty cool, pretty cool. I might to stick around and
- 52:33Speaker 3: just listen to a well come on in, come on in, man.
- 52:36Speaker 3: All right, we gotta go. I'll see you later today
- 52:38Speaker 3: on Metro News Midday. Until later I had to thank
- 52:42Speaker 3: for a minute. I have fun and love somebody.
