Latest / Husker Buzz / Memorial Stadium Re-Seating Bombshell
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We'll get to the injury report in a second, Sean,
- 0:02Speaker 1: but the big bombshell yesterday was the announcement, and unless
- 0:05Speaker 1: you've just simply checked out and had no real following
- 0:09Speaker 1: of what was happening either in Nebraska or in college sports,
- 0:12Speaker 1: you knew this was coming, the big announcement of the
- 0:15Speaker 1: re-seat of Memorial Stadium, which essentially means that everybody's seats
- 0:19Speaker 1: are up for grabs, and some of them you'll get
- 0:22Speaker 1: to keep, some of them you won't. In your opinion,
- 0:25Speaker 1: what's the fallout been?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's tough for a lot of fans because there's
- 0:30Speaker 2: so much memories and connections. And in some cases, I
- 0:34Speaker 2: could go back 100 years to these seats in the stadium.
- 0:38Speaker 2: But here's the reality. The entire South Stadium is gone,
- 0:42Speaker 2: or will be gone. The entire West Stadium, including the balcony, Jim.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I'm not sure a lot of people realize that they're
- 0:48Speaker 2: taking down the balcony and they're going to redo the
- 0:50Speaker 2: whole bowl. So That right there changes half the stadium
- 0:55Speaker 2: in terms of the seat numbers, locations, rows, et cetera.
- 0:59Speaker 2: So they have to do a re-seat in that regard.
- 1:02Speaker 2: For next year alone, there's roughly 60,000 season tickets. Well, 20,000
- 1:08Speaker 2: of those will be offline because of the construction. So
- 1:12Speaker 2: there's 20,000 people you've got to relocate, and the students, 7,500
- 1:15Speaker 2: of them, We'll move into a temporary kind of bowl
- 1:19Speaker 2: seating in the south on Ray's Risers, and that will
- 1:24Speaker 2: be their location permanently when it's done. But you've got
- 1:26Speaker 2: the students that you're going to relocate as well. So
- 1:29Speaker 2: there's really no easy way to do it, especially for 2027.
- 1:32Speaker 2: And then another thing people probably realize, the parking map
- 1:37Speaker 2: will be reset too because of the elimination of some
- 1:41Speaker 2: parking and some of the things going on over the
- 1:43Speaker 2: next year or two. you know, the tailgate spot for
- 1:46Speaker 2: a lot of people on East Stadium or South or
- 1:48Speaker 2: wherever you park. North Stadium is a big part of
- 1:51Speaker 2: your game day, too, and that will be reset, too,
- 1:53Speaker 2: in this process.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And then in 2028, when the stadium is all done,
- 1:58Speaker 1: they'll do it again. This is all about money. There's
- 2:01Speaker 1: no question about it. Right now, the stadium generates about
- 2:05Speaker 1: $ 70 million from ticket sales and donations, from the suites
- 2:10Speaker 1: to the club seats to the 25th row in Section 9.
- 2:15Speaker 1: They generate $ 70 million. That'll go to $ 100 million. And
- 2:19Speaker 1: I guess the only thing Nebraska fans are hoping, or
- 2:22Speaker 1: at least can cope with this, Sean, is that the
- 2:25Speaker 1: money will go to the players. That the extra $ 30
- 2:27Speaker 1: million a year will go to finance the players. Is
- 2:31Speaker 1: that reasonable?
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well, it has to be because if the... Protect College
- 2:37Speaker 2: Sports Act goes through, which people think it will, the
- 2:41Speaker 2: internal money that schools can pay will go up to
- 2:45Speaker 2: close to $ 50 million annually. I think it's $ 48. 8 million
- 2:48Speaker 2: or in that range. And right now Nebraska is paying
- 2:52Speaker 2: just under $ 22 million. So their bill will go up
- 2:56Speaker 2: to that high, and this will help them. be able
- 2:59Speaker 2: to meet that number just with what they can pay.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Some of that money goes to women's athletics, but a
- 3:07Speaker 2: lot of it's going to retention of your current roster
- 3:09Speaker 2: and acquisition of players from the high school ranks and
- 3:12Speaker 2: the portal. It's a big number, and a lot of
- 3:17Speaker 2: schools won't be able to pay that number, but in
- 3:19Speaker 2: the Big Ten, to compete, you're going to have to.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I think Nebraska's put themselves in a position where they
- 3:25Speaker 2: know how they're going to get there, but yeah, it's
- 3:27Speaker 2: It can cause a lot of change. Look, this stadium
- 3:29Speaker 2: thing is going to be phenomenal when it's done. I
- 3:31Speaker 2: was able to see them and go through a lot
- 3:32Speaker 2: of the things. It's exciting, but it's going to be
- 3:36Speaker 2: two good long years of going through a lot of
- 3:39Speaker 2: change before we get there.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah, there's no such thing as progress without pain. All right,
- 3:44Speaker 1: speaking of pain, the injury reports, and this is a
- 3:47Speaker 1: new thing in the Big Ten Conference, came out yesterday.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Each team, like the NFL, by midweek must announce who's questionable, doubtful, probable.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Anybody stand out for Nebraska, Carter Nelson being among them,
- 3:59Speaker 1: but anybody else that you think is a contributor either
- 4:02Speaker 1: now or for the rest of the season?
- 4:05Speaker 2: No, I mean, Gabe Moore we kind of knew was
- 4:09Speaker 2: going to be out for a while, and we haven't
- 4:13Speaker 2: seen him play as a defensive lineman. But yeah, there's
- 4:16Speaker 2: nobody on this report other than Carter Nelson, I would say,
- 4:21Speaker 2: that is newsworthy. Jordan Ochoa is kind of like your
- 4:25Speaker 2: third string defensive end. He's questionable. But no, Michigan State
- 4:29Speaker 2: had two starters on that report for their end. So
- 4:33Speaker 2: when you look at Michigan State's side of it, Platsoff here,
- 4:38Speaker 2: Brady Platsoff, a linebacker who starts for them, is out.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And then a corner, Tyron Chappell, is questionable. And those
- 4:48Speaker 2: are two key guys for Michigan State that are on
- 4:50Speaker 2: that report.
- 4:51Speaker 1: All right, that's KFAB Husker Info Strongman Sean Callen. He'll
- 4:54Speaker 1: be back with the keys to the game tomorrow, so
- 4:56Speaker 1: you're going to want to be a part of that. Remember,
