Latest / Wired To Hunt Podcast / Ep. 971: Rut Fresh Radio - The Best Whitetail Week is Here! Are All Day Sits Worth It?
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: All right, everyone, welcome back to Retfresh. This is this
- 0:05Speaker 1: is the peak excitement for this whole entire season for
- 0:08Speaker 1: Rough Fresh. In my opinion, this is the November fifth
- 0:10Speaker 1: through November twelfth episode. This is the week when everyone
- 0:13Speaker 1: schedules their vacation. This is when people are doing all
- 0:15Speaker 1: days since this is when some potential chaos that can
- 0:19Speaker 1: bounce in your favor or in the other direction. And
- 0:21Speaker 1: so my challenge for you guys this week is to
- 0:24Speaker 1: go back and reflect on last year and maybe you
- 0:27Speaker 1: made a mistake, Maybe you didn't grind through this time
- 0:30Speaker 1: period enough, maybe you gave up a little early, maybe
- 0:32Speaker 1: you came up with the excuses, or maybe everything came
- 0:35Speaker 1: back together perfectly and you didn't overthink it. And so
- 0:37Speaker 1: I think this week the challenge is to realize the
- 0:41Speaker 1: only thing you need to beat is yourself and your
- 0:43Speaker 1: own thought process to have success this week. And that
- 0:46Speaker 1: might be different for everyone. Maybe you're waiting on a
- 0:48Speaker 1: specific deer to show up, or maybe you have some
- 0:50Speaker 1: family or friends that are in from the area and
- 0:52Speaker 1: you want to make sure you are a good host
- 0:54Speaker 1: or a good friend or a good family member and
- 0:57Speaker 1: encourage people and have a great time this is the
- 0:59Speaker 1: week we've been waiting for all year. Once this week
- 1:01Speaker 1: is gone, we're gonna be waiting for it next year.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We're gonna be waiting for fifty one weeks later from today.
- 1:06Speaker 1: So we have a lot of really great guests this week.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We have Grant Watson, who shot a really big deer
- 1:11Speaker 1: in Iowa. We have Chris West from Pennsylvania who's headed
- 1:15Speaker 1: to Ohio who's been bounced around from both of those states.
- 1:17Speaker 1: We have Jared Vanheast who tagged a Michigan buck. We
- 1:20Speaker 1: have Tom Alexander all the way down from Texas. So
- 1:24Speaker 1: that's what we have this week. As you know, Roughresh
- 1:26Speaker 1: is brought to you by land dot com, the leading
- 1:29Speaker 1: online real estate marketplace to find your perfect rule recreational, agricultural,
- 1:33Speaker 1: or hunting properties here in the US. Let's kick things
- 1:37Speaker 1: off with Grant Watson. Here we go. Good luck this week,
- 1:41Speaker 1: have fun, and enjoy it.
- 1:48Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:49Speaker 1: First up on the line, we have Grant Watson. Man,
- 1:51Speaker 1: you just killed hammer in Iowa. How does it feel?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:56Speaker 3: Well, it's a town bittersweet because part of me is
- 1:59Speaker 3: glad to be done and I don't have the anxiety
- 2:01Speaker 3: of a tag in my pocket and watching everyone else
- 2:04Speaker 3: shoot deer. But then the other part of me is like, well,
- 2:06Speaker 3: I don't really want to be done yet. I do
- 2:08Speaker 3: have a landowner's tag, but I don't have a deer
- 2:11Speaker 3: that I would consider a trophy out there, just a
- 2:13Speaker 3: couple of call bucks. So I'm kind of out of
- 2:15Speaker 3: the game, but not totally. Well, it's pretty exciting.
- 2:17Speaker 1: You're out of the game for good reason, because you
- 2:19Speaker 1: just you just smoked in upper seventies and that's that
- 2:21Speaker 1: is awesome. So I've been torturing all of our guests
- 2:24Speaker 1: with a quick trivia question. So I've already had an
- 2:27Speaker 1: Iowall guess previously, so your question might be a little
- 2:29Speaker 1: bit harder, and I doubt anyone would get this right.
- 2:31Speaker 1: But according to recent data, what is the population of
- 2:36Speaker 1: deer white tailed deer in the state of Iowa?
- 2:41Speaker 2: Really hard? Just take a guess? Do that?
- 2:44Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:45Speaker 3: I wouldn't even have a guess. You got a guess,
- 2:49Speaker 3: like the entire state? How many deer here? Yeah, it's
- 2:54Speaker 3: got to be over it's got to be over like
- 2:57Speaker 3: a million, two hundred and ninety thousand. That was way
- 3:02Speaker 3: off two and ninety thousand. While I figured there would
- 3:05Speaker 3: be close to a million, but I don't know. Well
- 3:07Speaker 3: that's not that that's less than I thought.
- 3:09Speaker 1: That is that Well in the craziest thing is the
- 3:12Speaker 1: highest gun harvest ever was two thousand and five with
- 3:15Speaker 1: one hundred and seventy seven thousand. Oh so, like there's
- 3:19Speaker 1: obviously some ebb and flow of deer population in the
- 3:21Speaker 1: state of Iowa. But anyways, tell me about your setup
- 3:24Speaker 1: on how you can when, when did you kill this
- 3:25Speaker 1: deer and how did it come together?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 3:27Speaker 3: So, uh went out been kind of hunting on the
- 3:32Speaker 3: fringes of this area. It wasn't my main target. I
- 3:35Speaker 3: have another deer there that I have, you know, four
- 3:37Speaker 3: sheds too. He's a smaller deer, but the history is
- 3:41Speaker 3: a big important to me. But there was this other
- 3:43Speaker 3: deer that I call Spud. So there's Stickers, the one
- 3:46Speaker 3: that was mainly after the Spud, and I knew that
- 3:48Speaker 3: if Spud walked by, I was going to shoot him
- 3:51Speaker 3: because just being in his power. There's two big shooter bucks.
- 3:55Speaker 3: So last week stuff was kind of ramping up. I
- 3:59Speaker 3: kind of started buck hunting around the twenty fifth. It
- 4:01Speaker 3: seems like every year I always have like a giant
- 4:05Speaker 3: on camera the twenty fifth through like the twenty ninth.
- 4:08Speaker 3: It seems like every big deer I'm following, they'll be
- 4:10Speaker 3: on their feet during that time period. So Monday I
- 4:14Speaker 3: went out there. I hit a south wind and I
- 4:16Speaker 3: don't have a stand set up for a south wind,
- 4:18Speaker 3: so I actually sat on the ground and I had
- 4:21Speaker 3: this deer going back to bed and so I was like, okay,
- 4:24Speaker 3: I have a fifty to fifty shot of where I
- 4:26Speaker 3: have to be. And I went to go slip up
- 4:28Speaker 3: and I was gonna sit on a like a this
- 4:30Speaker 3: farmer aisle, a row of dirt, and I was gonna
- 4:33Speaker 3: sit on this dirt pile. Well, there was a dough
- 4:35Speaker 3: font feeding in the stubble. So I just stayed back,
- 4:37Speaker 3: and I stayed in the cedar tree. I just stood
- 4:40Speaker 3: against a cedar tree and cut a little hole into it.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And this year ended up standing up at one hundred
- 4:47Speaker 3: yards away. And then he went straight into the bedding
- 4:49Speaker 3: area where I have a stand in there. But I
- 4:51Speaker 3: couldn't hunt that, and I was waiting for the right
- 4:53Speaker 3: time to go in there. So I filmed him Monday night.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Thursday night, I went out. I actually saw stickers or
- 5:00Speaker 3: I went out Thursday morning, saw stickers would have shot him,
- 5:05Speaker 3: but a dough was just barely on the edge of
- 5:07Speaker 3: my wind, and my wind was cutting, you know, my
- 5:10Speaker 3: thermals could have been sucking towards the river, and she
- 5:14Speaker 3: was just right on that line. And if she wouldn't
- 5:16Speaker 3: boogered me, I would have shot him. But it was
- 5:19Speaker 3: fast forward. Saturday. I ended up going out Sat all
- 5:24Speaker 3: day kind of was raining, but the sun was supposed
- 5:26Speaker 3: to come out in the afternoon, and I figured once
- 5:28Speaker 3: that happened, you know, my odds of seeing either one
- 5:32Speaker 3: of those deer would go up. And at five point
- 5:35Speaker 3: twenty I looked over and I passed a nice buck
- 5:39Speaker 3: in the day earlier twice and I had a forecorn
- 5:42Speaker 3: chasing this dough around, like well, she might be in
- 5:45Speaker 3: like estrus. And so the bigger buck came around and
- 5:48Speaker 3: I passed him. And then at five twenty I saw
- 5:50Speaker 3: Spud and he was by this watering hole in the
- 5:53Speaker 3: bedding area and he did a big old snort wheeze,
- 5:56Speaker 3: And I'm just down wind this betting area on a
- 5:59Speaker 3: tight pinch, so like less likely for stuff to get
- 6:02Speaker 3: behind me. And he was at fifty yards and I
- 6:05Speaker 3: was like, well, I'm not gonna I'm not a believer
- 6:07Speaker 3: in shooting the deer of fifty yards because I get excited.
- 6:11Speaker 3: So he snore, Whez ran this other buck off, and
- 6:13Speaker 3: I said, it's meant to be. You know, he'll he'll
- 6:17Speaker 3: hook back around. And I texted my dad. You know,
- 6:19Speaker 3: my dad had a bad stroke last year, so that's
- 6:22Speaker 3: really the the highlight of the whole thing is to
- 6:24Speaker 3: have him in town. So he flew into town. So anyways,
- 6:26Speaker 3: I text my dad said, man, I just saw Spud.
- 6:29Speaker 3: You know, I think he's going to loop back around.
- 6:31Speaker 3: And at six to twenty, here he comes. He looked
- 6:33Speaker 3: back around and he took a sharp turn north and
- 6:36Speaker 3: I was just about to hit him with my grunt
- 6:37Speaker 3: tube and it was the extinguisher, but I did it.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I had it to my mouth and I just wanted to.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I wanted to see what he was going to do.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Five more steps and he hooked back hard. He came
- 6:49Speaker 3: and he worked a pinoak scrape right in front of
- 6:51Speaker 3: my tree. And I'm standing and facing the tree. At
- 6:52Speaker 3: this point, I said, Okay, if he goes right, he's
- 6:55Speaker 3: den If he goes left, he's dead. And he comes
- 6:58Speaker 3: in he hooks right around the tree. I drew back
- 7:00Speaker 3: and stopped him at fifteen yards and I smoked him,
- 7:04Speaker 3: and then from there, I you know, I hadn't tracked
- 7:07Speaker 3: a deer with my dad since twenty sixteen. So I
- 7:11Speaker 3: went and I left. I slipped back from my waiters
- 7:13Speaker 3: and walked out through the river, so I had really
- 7:16Speaker 3: good access and I waited for my dad to arrive
- 7:19Speaker 3: and we were able to recover him. So it was
- 7:21Speaker 3: my second best buck to date. My biggest buck is
- 7:24Speaker 3: actually the second buck on the wall back there. He's
- 7:26Speaker 3: one eighty two spud went. I taped him out one
- 7:29Speaker 3: seventy seven and seven eight, So I was pretty excited.
- 7:33Speaker 1: But yeah, dude, that that's amazing. I think there's a
- 7:35Speaker 1: lot of key lessons in there. Patience is a really
- 7:38Speaker 1: big one. Another one too, where it's like people, you know,
- 7:42Speaker 1: their brain short circuits and they're like, oh, he's fifty
- 7:44Speaker 1: yards is my only chance?
- 7:45Speaker 2: Is my only chance?
- 7:46Speaker 1: I just got to try to squeeze it through or
- 7:47Speaker 1: try to make this long shot that I'm probably not
- 7:50Speaker 1: fully capable of like most people, and your patient trusted
- 7:55Speaker 1: the plan, and dude, that is that is awesome. Man,
- 7:57Speaker 1: that's that's what we all dream about. That is awesome.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, I've hung the stands back in July, you know,
- 8:05Speaker 3: specifically for stickers, but I didn't know that this year
- 8:09Speaker 3: was going to blow up the way he did, and
- 8:12Speaker 3: so I kind of played down the fringe. And yeah,
- 8:15Speaker 3: I mean it's it was November first, Like, I don't
- 8:17Speaker 3: need to be launching an arrow at a deer. And
- 8:19Speaker 3: you know how it is, just as well as probably
- 8:21Speaker 3: any other listener on this podcast. If you get a
- 8:23Speaker 3: deer to you know, four or five six years old,
- 8:26Speaker 3: and you shoot him, you make a marginal shot. You
- 8:28Speaker 3: might not kill them initially, but then infection kills him. Well,
- 8:31Speaker 3: it takes three four more years to get a deer
- 8:35Speaker 3: like that to fill that shoes, especially the genetics you know,
- 8:38Speaker 3: that is going to break that bit and Crockett score.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So yeah, no, I think that's that's very timely, very
- 8:45Speaker 1: timely advice for everyone to not force it. And a
- 8:48Speaker 1: lot of times, you know this pretend you're watching a
- 8:50Speaker 1: two year old or a three year old, and it's
- 8:52Speaker 1: like a lot of times they come back, you know,
- 8:54Speaker 1: an hour later, forty minutes later, they loop back around,
- 8:57Speaker 1: and it's like, okay, well, I'm really glad I didn't
- 8:59Speaker 1: take a really crappy because you know, you end up
- 9:01Speaker 1: getting the opportunity.
- 9:02Speaker 2: So I think that's very timely.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Advice for everyone because we all want it to happen
- 9:06Speaker 1: so bad, right, That's why we're that's why we're out there,
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's why you set up in July. So now that
- 9:11Speaker 1: is that is awesome and what an incredible experience. Now
- 9:14Speaker 1: looking from the fifth of the twelfth, this is this
- 9:17Speaker 1: is going to this is like big buck carnage.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Man.
- 9:19Speaker 1: The amount of big gear that hit the dirt during
- 9:22Speaker 1: this week is in the Midwest and probably most of
- 9:25Speaker 1: the country, Like, this is the week we all have
- 9:27Speaker 1: been waiting for. What's what what is top of mind
- 9:32Speaker 1: for you right now to like, for anyone listening that
- 9:34Speaker 1: you know didn't kill one on November. First of what
- 9:37Speaker 1: would you be focusing on? And what are you focusing on?
- 9:39Speaker 1: Because you have Landlanders tag still.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Yeah, so if I if I had my state wide
- 9:44Speaker 3: tag in the pocket, I would still be kind of
- 9:47Speaker 3: close to the betting areas are at pinch it seems like.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And I'm not trying to be an expert because I'm
- 9:53Speaker 3: I'm just learning, so sure, but like this a pointer
- 9:56Speaker 3: behind me right here. I've shot him on November seven
- 10:00Speaker 3: into twenty twenty one, and he was locked on a
- 10:02Speaker 3: dough on November fourth, And right now I think my
- 10:06Speaker 3: bigger deer locked on a dough because I haven't seen them,
- 10:10Speaker 3: and typically it seems like they're moving on their feet
- 10:13Speaker 3: a little bit more, but this year seems like maybe
- 10:15Speaker 3: they found that first dough already. So right now i'd
- 10:17Speaker 3: be kind of, you know, I wouldn't give up about
- 10:20Speaker 3: your target deer, like it's probably not dead. I'd be
- 10:23Speaker 3: in tight to the betting. I'd be willing to kind
- 10:26Speaker 3: of risk the wind a little bit more. And all
- 10:28Speaker 3: day sits. I mean, if you can get off work,
- 10:31Speaker 3: and if you can't get off work, like just you
- 10:34Speaker 3: got to get out there as soon as you can.
- 10:36Speaker 3: It can still happen in last thirty minutes of daylight.
- 10:38Speaker 3: But once he breaks from that dough, he's going to
- 10:40Speaker 3: be on his feet looking for another one, and you
- 10:42Speaker 3: should probably try to be there something. So I just
- 10:46Speaker 3: kind of play that. I don't have a lot of
- 10:48Speaker 3: luck past the eighth, like the eighth through the the eleventh,
- 10:53Speaker 3: but come the eleventh through the eighteenth, I have way
- 10:55Speaker 3: more luck because it seems like they're running a lot more. Yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 3: I just kind of play down the down wind of
- 11:03Speaker 3: dough betting or really big pinch points in the cover
- 11:05Speaker 3: I hunt. I mean, I'm just hunting a pinch because
- 11:09Speaker 3: the deer can kind of bed just about anywhere and
- 11:11Speaker 3: end up. But I gotta try to be in that
- 11:13Speaker 3: one spot and using historical data. The biggest thing I
- 11:17Speaker 3: think where guys make mistakes is I have a deer
- 11:21Speaker 3: over here that I would shoot, and I have a
- 11:23Speaker 3: deer over here I would shoot. And you might want
- 11:27Speaker 3: to shoot deer A more than B, but B might
- 11:29Speaker 3: be daylighting and deer A might not be killable on
- 11:32Speaker 3: the farm that you're hunting. So I used to catch
- 11:35Speaker 3: myself and I still do bouncing back and forth between farms.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Now is the time to just kind of pick one
- 11:41Speaker 3: and go with it. But if you have a cell
- 11:43Speaker 3: camera showing you, hey, this year is daylight right now,
- 11:46Speaker 3: I would not be afraid to get out of my tree,
- 11:48Speaker 3: go to that farm and get in that tree and
- 11:52Speaker 3: just give it a shot. Yeah, because if there's a
- 11:55Speaker 3: hot dough under your tree, you're probably gonna whack her
- 11:57Speaker 3: in at night time. I mean, if you have rgular cameras,
- 12:01Speaker 3: you can go check regular cameras, like the time sensitive
- 12:04Speaker 3: information is right now.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I think it's easy to get scatter brain.
- 12:09Speaker 1: It's it's uh. The only time I wish there was
- 12:13Speaker 1: two of me is this week right now, where it's like, dude,
- 12:15Speaker 1: I wish I could be in due spots at once.
- 12:18Speaker 1: So that's really good advice. Now, all day sits they're
- 12:22Speaker 1: a grind. Anyone that says they're not a grind is line.
- 12:24Speaker 1: What advice do you have for someone that's like, Okay,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I've heard this all day sits. Everyone says, you just
- 12:30Speaker 1: got to be in a tree. I have work off.
- 12:33Speaker 1: How do you how do you make the day go
- 12:34Speaker 1: by without pitting your head against the tree?
- 12:37Speaker 2: Go I'm bored?
- 12:39Speaker 3: Yeah, well it's funny because Saturday was really boring. But
- 12:42Speaker 3: I knew that I knew that I was so close
- 12:45Speaker 3: to the betting area, like something because could happen, like
- 12:50Speaker 3: you never know it could it could happen to get
- 12:52Speaker 3: the moment you used to tell yourself that I always packed,
- 12:54Speaker 3: you know, my lunch, and usually I like took a
- 12:58Speaker 3: roll of Star Wars with me, like eat a Starbust
- 13:01Speaker 3: or something I watch the like the White Tailed Cribs.
- 13:04Speaker 5: I throw in my ear pods.
- 13:06Speaker 3: If I'm like really bored. But you gotta stay alert
- 13:09Speaker 3: because if a those come running by, yeah, well you
- 13:13Speaker 3: better be ready and not messing around. But I don't know,
- 13:16Speaker 3: I mean I think all day sits are grind for sure,
- 13:20Speaker 3: but you got to kind of remove the pressures. Hey,
- 13:22Speaker 3: there's no pressure to actually fill my tag like I mean, yeah,
- 13:28Speaker 3: we all want to fill our tag, but really just
- 13:31Speaker 3: being out there and enjoying nature. I mean, it's got
- 13:33Speaker 3: to stay mentally tough through it. Don't get discouraged when
- 13:36Speaker 3: other people are shooting deer or thinking, hey, the rut's
- 13:39Speaker 3: not going on, because it could switch in a blink
- 13:42Speaker 3: of eye and you just have to be there to
- 13:44Speaker 3: capitalize on it.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Yeah, you can go from having the worst season ever
- 13:46Speaker 1: to the best season ever in a matter of ten seconds.
- 13:49Speaker 1: I mean that's the magic of this time of year.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yeah awesome.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Yeah, on a scale one to ten, ten being this
- 13:55Speaker 1: might be the best week of the entire year, one
- 13:57Speaker 1: being it's gonna be the worst. Where does this fall
- 14:00Speaker 1: November fifth to the twelfth.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I don't know. On my spots I hunt out West.
- 14:06Speaker 3: I actually like about the the eleventh through the eighteenth,
- 14:12Speaker 3: but I would say it's probably got to be as
- 14:14Speaker 3: close to a nine. I mean, my cameras are rolling.
- 14:19Speaker 3: It also helps this year I have a lot more
- 14:20Speaker 3: shooter deer on trail camera. So yeah, I mean, if
- 14:24Speaker 3: I if I had another state wide tag, I'd be
- 14:27Speaker 3: locked into a tree all day right now, because I
- 14:29Speaker 3: think it's gonna happen, especially about this weekend. I mean,
- 14:32Speaker 3: we have cooler temperatures this year, at least in Iowa
- 14:35Speaker 3: then years past where some years I've been hunting and
- 14:38Speaker 3: it's like seventy degrees November fifth, and that sucks. So
- 14:43Speaker 3: I think I think this is going to be a
- 14:45Speaker 3: big week. A lot of big deer are going to
- 14:47Speaker 3: hit the ground between now and Sunday, and then I
- 14:50Speaker 3: think there will be another way of them.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Love it, love it well.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Congratulations once again, Grant, good luck the rest of the season.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Really appreciate it. Awesome that your dad is able to
- 14:59Speaker 1: be there with the recovery. I know that's really special
- 15:01Speaker 1: for you and him and so Di congratulations once again.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Awesome, Thank you, Jake.
- 15:06Speaker 1: All Right, we have shared with the Habitat podcast who
- 15:10Speaker 1: recently shot a Michigan buck.
- 15:12Speaker 2: How's it feel, man, Oh.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Buddy, it feels great.
- 15:15Speaker 6: It feels great to have a tag notched and you know,
- 15:18Speaker 6: shake the rust off if you will, So thank you.
- 15:20Speaker 4: It's awesome.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah, man, No, that's super exciting.
- 15:23Speaker 1: And so in Michigan, was this off of I know
- 15:27Speaker 1: you hunt kind of the full spectrum of the state.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Was this way up north or was this more further south?
- 15:33Speaker 6: It's closer to home. Okay, Yeah, so southeast part of
- 15:37Speaker 6: the state.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Wonderful, wonderful. And so I know you were using a decoy.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I've never been I've never been brave enough to use one.
- 15:45Speaker 1: So go ahead and convince me and everyone else while
- 15:47Speaker 1: we need to use a decoy, and how it worked.
- 15:49Speaker 6: Well, I haven't been brave enough either until this time.
- 15:53Speaker 6: I might have used one once in Iowa for the
- 15:55Speaker 6: heck of it, six years ago. But I've been hunting
- 15:59Speaker 6: this this farm, a really nice eight point out there,
- 16:02Speaker 6: and Thursday Friday last week, I.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Believe it was. I had him at.
- 16:09Speaker 6: Forty fifty yards twice. Super aggressive deer, he's running off
- 16:13Speaker 6: other deer. He's a man in the area.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Put it that way.
- 16:17Speaker 6: So knowing that I grun him in, he come in
- 16:21Speaker 6: and he wouldn't see any deer. It's very mature timber.
- 16:24Speaker 6: It's not my farm. If it was my farm, the
- 16:25Speaker 6: timber it I'll be cut right. So it's very mature timber.
- 16:29Speaker 6: And he can see so he's Caesar's no deer. And
- 16:32Speaker 6: he does this to me twice. So then we had
- 16:35Speaker 6: a Halloween camping weekend with the kids, and so I
- 16:39Speaker 6: get back in there Sunday night and I was talking
- 16:41Speaker 6: to my buddy and I'm like, God, I got.
- 16:43Speaker 4: To think, I have to use a decoy. Can I
- 16:44Speaker 4: borrow your decoy?
- 16:45Speaker 6: Because if he if he if I grunt at him
- 16:48Speaker 6: and he comes in and there's no deer there. He's
- 16:50Speaker 6: he's wise to this. So I thought a decoy in
- 16:53Speaker 6: the timber. That sounds insane, you know. And plus I
- 16:58Speaker 6: have all my saddle gear on my back and picking
- 17:01Speaker 6: a new tree and going in deeper than I was before,
- 17:04Speaker 6: kind of trying to get just downwind of where he
- 17:06Speaker 6: walks out of the swamp. I set up, I get
- 17:10Speaker 6: up a tree and it's just quiet. There's no wind,
- 17:14Speaker 6: it's a little warmer, nothing's going on, even the doors
- 17:18Speaker 6: weren't moving very well, and so I tickle the horns
- 17:22Speaker 6: a little bit again Michigan. I don't do this a lot,
- 17:25Speaker 6: but this guy's aggressive and I've seen him be aggressive,
- 17:28Speaker 6: so I'm going to be aggressive.
- 17:39Speaker 4: And then I tickle the horns.
- 17:41Speaker 6: About fifteen minutes later, I look off to my right,
- 17:45Speaker 6: which is my weak side in the settle, right handed,
- 17:48Speaker 6: and this buck steps out. They said, it's a nice
- 17:52Speaker 6: nine point. He's coming kind of above me on this
- 17:55Speaker 6: ridge and starting to get downwind. Well, I had the
- 17:58Speaker 6: deco aut and find of me, like you're supposed to
- 18:00Speaker 6: do apparently, and I have him circle down wind, which
- 18:03Speaker 6: would be in front of me. He's going down win
- 18:05Speaker 6: behind me too, so I had you know that the
- 18:08Speaker 6: time is ticking. But what was so cool about it
- 18:11Speaker 6: all he was doing. He's just locked on that decoy,
- 18:14Speaker 6: I mean, stopped and stared for you know, probably five minutes.
- 18:19Speaker 6: I'm getting twisted around in the saddle with my weak side,
- 18:23Speaker 6: starting to choke myself on the on the.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Teather, you know.
- 18:27Speaker 6: And then he starts coming in down wind. But as
- 18:30Speaker 6: he's doing that, he's coming closer and closer and closer
- 18:32Speaker 6: to the decoy.
- 18:33Speaker 4: He's pulling it to this decoy, and again.
- 18:36Speaker 6: He just stop and stare, stop and stare. So every
- 18:39Speaker 6: time he stop, I would turn a little more get ready,
- 18:42Speaker 6: and I ended up being a point to where I
- 18:43Speaker 6: couldn't turn anymore with my my teather, and he was
- 18:48Speaker 6: at twenty one yards and I drew back right when
- 18:51Speaker 6: he crossed behind this tree and again just staring at
- 18:54Speaker 6: the decoy, and I'm like, oh my gosh, like I'm
- 18:57Speaker 6: between him and my tree at this point so he
- 18:59Speaker 6: can look up. And yeah, and he had no interest
- 19:02Speaker 6: in what I was doing anything about it. Laser focus,
- 19:05Speaker 6: laser focus, which is kind of the message I'm trying
- 19:07Speaker 6: to get across here. And yeah, I ended up shooting
- 19:10Speaker 6: him at twenty yards, I think because he was on
- 19:14Speaker 6: alert for that decoy. He I know, he dropped yea,
- 19:17Speaker 6: and my bow was fairly quiet, but he dropped me,
- 19:20Speaker 6: and I hit him in the spine, put him down,
- 19:23Speaker 6: threw another one in him, cut myself on the broad head,
- 19:26Speaker 6: reloading blood all over the place.
- 19:28Speaker 4: That was awesome, and he didn't go anywhere.
- 19:30Speaker 6: But I just I couldn't believe hauling in that decoy
- 19:35Speaker 6: like six hundred yards setting it up in the timber.
- 19:39Speaker 6: It sucked this deer in for sure. When he first
- 19:42Speaker 6: left the swamp, he was going off the property in
- 19:44Speaker 6: a different direction.
- 19:46Speaker 1: It's one of those deals where I like your neighbor.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Let's say you guys had a shared lane, and they're like,
- 19:51Speaker 1: what the heck is Jared doing.
- 19:52Speaker 2: He's bringing a decoy in.
- 19:53Speaker 1: He's out of his saddle and he's bringing that thing
- 19:55Speaker 1: in the timber and it'll work for you. So I mean,
- 19:57Speaker 1: that's that's the funny thing of it, really interesting. So
- 20:00Speaker 1: I mean understanding you had multiple encounters to understand kind
- 20:04Speaker 1: of like the behavior of that deer, and like, hey man,
- 20:06Speaker 1: I think this is actually going to work. It wasn't
- 20:08Speaker 1: necessarily like a blind shot in the dark, but dude,
- 20:11Speaker 1: it worked.
- 20:11Speaker 2: That's congratulations.
- 20:12Speaker 4: That's a thank you, thank you.
- 20:14Speaker 6: I ended up buying a decoy when I got home
- 20:16Speaker 6: that night, and it's on my you know, it's in
- 20:18Speaker 6: my truck ready for Iowa tomorrow.
- 20:20Speaker 4: And I dropped my buddy's back off.
- 20:22Speaker 6: But I guess, I mean, the open chimber in my
- 20:25Speaker 6: brain is kind of like a field, right right, They
- 20:27Speaker 6: can see forever, there's no cover. That's where you normally
- 20:30Speaker 6: would use a decoy, at least what I've seen, so
- 20:32Speaker 6: in my brain it made sense to try. Now, it's
- 20:37Speaker 6: a long hike and you got to haul this thing
- 20:38Speaker 6: all the way in on your back and everything else,
- 20:40Speaker 6: but uh, it ended up working, man and one exactly.
- 20:46Speaker 2: I love that man.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Congratulations, So thank you. You know we talked here. You're
- 20:50Speaker 1: you're packing your bags and going from Michigan Iowa. That's
- 20:54Speaker 1: pretty darn awesome looking here in the future. And based
- 20:58Speaker 1: off of the activity you've been seeing, what is top
- 21:02Speaker 1: of mind? What is your strategy because obviously you're traveling there,
- 21:05Speaker 1: so you have a limited time to hopefully connect with
- 21:08Speaker 1: the buck. What is top of mind to make the
- 21:11Speaker 1: most out of your trip to Iowa. And this could
- 21:14Speaker 1: be relatable for anyone that's going from Pennsylvania to Ohio
- 21:17Speaker 1: or Alabama to Illinois.
- 21:20Speaker 6: Yeah, great, great question. I've been thinking about that quite
- 21:22Speaker 6: a bit. You know, here in Michigan, things have been
- 21:27Speaker 6: hit or miss over the last couple of days. Yesterday
- 21:29Speaker 6: morning was great. Other than that, it's been a little
- 21:32Speaker 6: bit hit or miss. I think I know some of
- 21:35Speaker 6: the bucks are lockedown doors already. I've seen videos from
- 21:38Speaker 6: my buddies in Iowa Andy's out there right now and
- 21:41Speaker 6: he's not seeing a ton of movement.
- 21:44Speaker 4: It's pretty slow.
- 21:45Speaker 6: Our buddy Aaron's out there, so it's just about to
- 21:48Speaker 6: kick off.
- 21:48Speaker 4: I believe out.
- 21:49Speaker 6: There, and I'm sure different farms are different stuff going on,
- 21:52Speaker 6: right But my strategy is to get out there, cover
- 21:56Speaker 6: a ton of ground day one, day two, and really
- 22:00Speaker 6: find beat down scrapes, hot sign areas. I know this
- 22:05Speaker 6: is all typical stuff, but when you have a lot
- 22:07Speaker 6: of ground to cover and and there's no set stands,
- 22:11Speaker 6: there's no you know, real food plot.
- 22:12Speaker 4: So I'm gonna go there and I'm gonna burn rubber
- 22:15Speaker 4: on the boots and the.
- 22:15Speaker 6: Bike and get four or five spots set up, get
- 22:19Speaker 6: some cameras out, and then the weather looks to be
- 22:22Speaker 6: pretty good, so I'm gonna just can't see what happens.
- 22:25Speaker 6: You'll probably hunt long into the afternoon, if not all day,
- 22:30Speaker 6: and then obviously be out there for the eating.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Okay, So when you're when you're burning burning boot leather here,
- 22:37Speaker 1: are you going into thicker areas or is it more
- 22:41Speaker 1: edge exterior type? And I'm just kind of picturing what
- 22:44Speaker 1: the farm may look like in Iowa, but picturing there's
- 22:47Speaker 1: probably some thick draws or some thicker parts of the timber.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Are you going in there and looking around and poking around?
- 22:52Speaker 1: Is that your plan?
- 22:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going full aggressive.
- 22:54Speaker 6: Yeah, Okay, I think if it was Michigan, i'd hold back,
- 22:57Speaker 6: but different pressure set up out there with a deer.
- 23:01Speaker 6: I'm going till I bump deer, till I see what
- 23:04Speaker 6: I want to see, and you know, hoping that the
- 23:07Speaker 6: mindset of that buck this time of year, I'll be
- 23:10Speaker 6: easily forgettable or at least partly forgettable for a little while,
- 23:14Speaker 6: so I can get back in there once I see
- 23:15Speaker 6: what I want to see.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Yep.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Yes, some of those bucks are starting to have that
- 23:18Speaker 1: crazy look in their eye. I like, I've gotten some
- 23:22Speaker 1: videos and I'm like, oh, that dude is he's feeling it.
- 23:25Speaker 1: He's not as careful as maybe as what it would
- 23:28Speaker 1: have been two weeks ago. And so I think that's
- 23:30Speaker 1: a really great piece of advice for someone that doesn't
- 23:32Speaker 1: have an inventory or intel and don't really know where
- 23:35Speaker 1: to necessarily start, and you don't want to burn those days,
- 23:38Speaker 1: these like most precious days of the entire season. If
- 23:41Speaker 1: you're four hundred yards out of the game and you
- 23:44Speaker 1: just never know what's going to happen. So as far
- 23:46Speaker 1: as you know, looking for scrapes, looking for hot sign
- 23:49Speaker 1: looking for rubs, what's going to get you most excited
- 23:52Speaker 1: to be like, Okay, I have four sets on this
- 23:53Speaker 1: huge farm. I'm going to hang us at here. What
- 23:56Speaker 1: what's kind of your mental checklist?
- 23:58Speaker 6: I think if I find a draw that is thick
- 24:01Speaker 6: at the top of the draw, like real thick, and
- 24:04Speaker 6: there's food maybe up top on a field, some crops
- 24:08Speaker 6: or something like that, and then I'll have, you know,
- 24:10Speaker 6: some scrapes around it or some real heavy trails I
- 24:12Speaker 6: go into it or come out of it, that's gonna
- 24:15Speaker 6: be what I'm looking for.
- 24:16Speaker 4: That's gonna be excitement.
- 24:18Speaker 6: I want to see dose and I want to see
- 24:20Speaker 6: their betting area, and it has to be thick, you know.
- 24:22Speaker 6: And I don't care where you are these these deer
- 24:25Speaker 6: like thick cover in daylight.
- 24:27Speaker 4: So that's that's what I'm looking for.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I like it.
- 24:31Speaker 1: So you're are you ringing rattling Antler's decoys and grunk call?
- 24:36Speaker 1: Are you going the full trifecta hat trick bag of tricks?
- 24:39Speaker 4: Yes, yes, sir, I'm begging the decoy. I'm a decoy guy.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Now I'm gonna try it.
- 24:45Speaker 6: I don't know if I'll try it like first night
- 24:47Speaker 6: or anything, or don't know if i'll hunt first night,
- 24:49Speaker 6: but I'm gonna definitely bring that the antlers, the grunt tube.
- 24:53Speaker 4: I haven't had a lot of luck with a can call,
- 24:55Speaker 4: but that's gonna be in.
- 24:55Speaker 6: The pack, you know, and then obviously some snacks so
- 24:58Speaker 6: I can hang out for a while.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that's I've been asking folks, because this is the
- 25:02Speaker 1: time when people are logging me most hours in a
- 25:04Speaker 1: tree stand. Do you have any tips of advice to
- 25:08Speaker 1: say mentally sharp or to pass the time, because realistically,
- 25:11Speaker 1: you got to be in the stand this time of
- 25:12Speaker 1: year to have a chance. But people can start making excuses.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I gotta get this done, and maybe you do or
- 25:18Speaker 1: maybe you don't, or my win, my wins. This not
- 25:21Speaker 1: quite right. I need to get down, and I think
- 25:22Speaker 1: a lot of times it's just like I want to
- 25:24Speaker 1: move because I'm bored and maybe I'm projecting here.
- 25:27Speaker 6: No, I mean I love hearing this because I got
- 25:30Speaker 6: to get this out of my brain right like you can't.
- 25:32Speaker 6: You can't have that in your brain this time of year.
- 25:36Speaker 6: I'm going to have a thermost of coffee. I always
- 25:39Speaker 6: have a little thermost that I covered in you know,
- 25:40Speaker 6: camo tape.
- 25:41Speaker 4: I always have that.
- 25:43Speaker 6: I'm gonna have some crustable sandwiches, that's kind of my goal,
- 25:47Speaker 6: and some just simple stuff, right, and then yeah, that's
- 25:51Speaker 6: that's really Yeah.
- 25:52Speaker 4: I'm playing on.
- 25:53Speaker 6: H sitting long and just knowing that it's hours of
- 25:57Speaker 6: boredom interrupted by what thirty seconds, the whole reason you're there.
- 26:02Speaker 6: So yeah, I don't care if it's if it's raining,
- 26:05Speaker 6: I have a tree standing umbrella, you know whatever, and
- 26:08Speaker 6: rain gear, whatever it takes. I'm going solo. So it's
- 26:11Speaker 6: just me and the woods, and I'm gonna make it
- 26:13Speaker 6: happen and give it my all. So you take six
- 26:16Speaker 6: years to get this tag. Yeah, I sleep in, I'm
- 26:18Speaker 6: gonna feel whenever I sleep in, I feel really guilty.
- 26:21Speaker 6: So yeah, I'm not hopefully I won't do that.
- 26:24Speaker 2: No, well, you're yeah.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I think the weather as far as for this period
- 26:28Speaker 1: of time, as of right now, the weather actually looks
- 26:30Speaker 1: probably the best it's been in the last few years.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Like we've had really hot spells or or mega wind
- 26:36Speaker 1: like it actually looks maybe like it's this might be
- 26:39Speaker 1: the best fifth through the twelfth we've had in probably
- 26:43Speaker 1: three or four years, and maybe maybe longer than that.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 26:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I'm looking at you know, lows in
- 26:48Speaker 6: the high thirties and forties in the morning, and then
- 26:52Speaker 6: highs of you know, mid fifties. A couple of days
- 26:55Speaker 6: it reaches like sixty one sixty two. I mean, I'm
- 26:59Speaker 6: I can't ask for more than that. I'm not going
- 27:01Speaker 6: to freeze and I'm not going to bake, so like
- 27:03Speaker 6: that's perfect.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I remember in twenty three when I shot my eyewa deer,
- 27:07Speaker 1: it was like during this time period, it was like
- 27:10Speaker 1: seventy eight degrees when I left my truck. And so
- 27:13Speaker 1: for anyone that don't don't complain about the weather actually
- 27:15Speaker 1: having really awesome weather.
- 27:17Speaker 6: Like you said, if it was hot and windy or
- 27:20Speaker 6: super rainy, I mean, that's the worst man, Like, it's
- 27:23Speaker 6: it's I'm just hopefully that doesn't change and I'll be
- 27:26Speaker 6: blessed if it stays how it is.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Well, so I we're going to close this out with
- 27:31Speaker 1: two different things here. First, one is a quick trivia question.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I've been torturing most guests. My question for you is
- 27:41Speaker 1: what year was there the most amount of deer shot
- 27:47Speaker 1: in the state of Michigan, highest total number A hargust
- 27:52Speaker 1: what year?
- 27:53Speaker 6: I did not know the answer to that, but I'm
- 27:55Speaker 6: going to go back to I'm gonna go back to
- 27:58Speaker 6: like nineteen fifty.
- 28:02Speaker 2: I got my little sheet.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Actually it's not nineteen fifty, it's actually nineteen ninety nine.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Oh wow, wow, it was five hundred and forty ninety
- 28:10Speaker 1: five deer that were shot. And then the highest gun
- 28:12Speaker 1: harvest was four hundred and twelve thousand, and the year
- 28:16Speaker 1: two thousand and then ninety nine was actually the highest
- 28:19Speaker 1: four archery. So little fun fact for everyone here. And
- 28:24Speaker 1: then my last question, is this on a scale one
- 28:28Speaker 1: to ten, ten being this is going to be the
- 28:30Speaker 1: best entire week all of twenty twenty five twenty twenty
- 28:34Speaker 1: six deer season is the ten one, It is the worst. Obviously,
- 28:37Speaker 1: we are probably in the week where there will be
- 28:39Speaker 1: the most amount of giant deer shot statistically.
- 28:42Speaker 2: So where do you think this falls?
- 28:45Speaker 6: After sting me on the last question, thanks for the layup,
- 28:48Speaker 6: I'm going I think I think you if you're not
- 28:53Speaker 6: this week, you have something that must be very important
- 28:56Speaker 6: to be doing. So that's that's it's a great week.
- 28:59Speaker 6: I mean the sixth, the seventh. Last time I was
- 29:01Speaker 6: in Iowa. I think I shot my buck on the seventh,
- 29:05Speaker 6: So yeah, I love it. Coming up, I know there's
- 29:07Speaker 6: some good stuff and later November two, but I'm normally
- 29:11Speaker 6: back in Michigan doing our traditional rifle camp thing with
- 29:13Speaker 6: the other ten million people you just mentioned.
- 29:16Speaker 4: So yeah, it should be should be a great week.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Awesome, Jared, Well, congrat congratulations on your Michigan buck, and
- 29:23Speaker 1: good luck in Iowa. You're gonna be where everyone wants.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Everyone who's not in Iowa this week is going to
- 29:29Speaker 1: wish they were where you're at.
- 29:30Speaker 2: So enjoy it. I know you're gonna have fun and
- 29:33Speaker 2: really appreciate it.
- 29:34Speaker 6: Hey, I appreciate it, man. I'll take all the good
- 29:36Speaker 6: luck I can get. Thank you, and good luck yourself.
- 29:38Speaker 6: I know you're out there hitting at art, so put
- 29:40Speaker 6: one down and send me a picture.
- 29:42Speaker 2: You got it, Jared, We'll see you.
- 29:44Speaker 4: Thanks Jack.
- 29:45Speaker 1: All right, Next up on the line, we have Chris.
- 29:47Speaker 1: How's it. How's it going right now?
- 29:49Speaker 7: Feeling good man? Glad to be here, talk some white
- 29:52Speaker 7: tails and get the same rolling.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Absolutely, So what have you been seeing as far as activity.
- 29:59Speaker 1: I know, you just got back from all Ohio. What
- 30:01Speaker 1: was kind of the road activity here for the last
- 30:04Speaker 1: week of October.
- 30:07Speaker 7: In Pennsylvania, it's been fairly slow, just because I think
- 30:11Speaker 7: of the a corn crop.
- 30:12Speaker 8: There's a lot of food this year.
- 30:13Speaker 7: So the late teens of October have been Uh, it
- 30:18Speaker 7: was real slow just because there was so much food
- 30:20Speaker 7: on the ground. Betting was sort of random, So movement
- 30:24Speaker 7: was real sporadic. To Ohio. It was starting to pick
- 30:30Speaker 7: up a little bit. I was seeing some bucks and
- 30:32Speaker 7: bucks were really picking up on scrapes. That was around
- 30:35Speaker 7: the twenty fifth.
- 30:37Speaker 1: M And so you're back from Ohio. Are you primarily
- 30:42Speaker 1: hunting Ohio for the next you know, November.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Fifth through the twelfth.
- 30:46Speaker 7: I actually for my next Ohio trip on the seventh.
- 30:50Speaker 7: So yeah, so okay, seventh through the eleventh, I will
- 30:53Speaker 7: be in Ohio.
- 30:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 30:57Speaker 1: So with with that in mind, you know, you have
- 31:00Speaker 1: some intel from your most recent trip in Ohio.
- 31:02Speaker 2: You're going out there on the seventh.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I think that's probably relatable to a lot of people
- 31:05Speaker 1: that are, you know, traveling for the next seven days
- 31:09Speaker 1: to try to make a move somewhat rapidly. What is
- 31:13Speaker 1: on your mental checklist when you get back to Ohio
- 31:16Speaker 1: to hunt, you know, the seventh through the twelfth for example.
- 31:20Speaker 7: A lot of it's going to do with historical information
- 31:23Speaker 7: that I have and realizing that scrapes are starting.
- 31:26Speaker 8: To lose their jujus.
- 31:28Speaker 7: So we're going to be mainly focusing on dough groups
- 31:31Speaker 7: and terrain features connecting dough betting areas that I have
- 31:35Speaker 7: had success with in the past. So I mean those
- 31:38Speaker 7: those and terrain features are going to be your best friend.
- 31:41Speaker 7: I feel like in that section of the run.
- 31:46Speaker 1: When you're going out there, I'm assuming it's big woods.
- 31:48Speaker 1: I'm also guessing it's public. Are you sitting in one
- 31:53Speaker 1: spot dark to dark? Are you, you know, having a
- 31:55Speaker 1: morning set kind of up high on the hill and
- 31:57Speaker 1: moving down lower in the evening or tbd?
- 32:01Speaker 2: Or what?
- 32:01Speaker 1: What advice do you have for someone that might be
- 32:02Speaker 1: in a similar boat.
- 32:04Speaker 7: So I don't know if I have a preference as
- 32:06Speaker 7: far as elevation high or low. It's all a spot
- 32:09Speaker 7: dependent for me and what maybe I know about that area.
- 32:14Speaker 7: It's a lot of it's gonna be come back to
- 32:15Speaker 7: some first that I'm park gonna start low because it's
- 32:19Speaker 7: all going to revolve around days if I'm just being
- 32:21Speaker 7: short with it, so I don't I don't care if
- 32:23Speaker 7: the doors are betting higher, if the doors are betting low.
- 32:25Speaker 7: I just need to be in correlation with where the
- 32:27Speaker 7: doors are in that area. What was the second happier question?
- 32:35Speaker 2: H and are you parking in one tree for the
- 32:37Speaker 2: entire day or are you moving? You know, bait, are you.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Moving kind of midday or moving around one o'clock to
- 32:42Speaker 1: go get to more of an evening spot. And you
- 32:46Speaker 1: know that's probably more prevalent in different parts of the country,
- 32:48Speaker 1: But don't big woods.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:49Speaker 7: Since I don't live there, I'm not as in the
- 32:53Speaker 7: moment as I am at home. So when I get there,
- 32:56Speaker 7: I'll have a game plan to start and then I'm
- 32:58Speaker 7: gonna move as needed. If I'm seeing dose now, even
- 33:02Speaker 7: if I haven't seen the buck yet and i'm seeing
- 33:03Speaker 7: those for sit or two, I might hang out because
- 33:05Speaker 7: I know the doors are there. There's always that chance.
- 33:08Speaker 7: But if I'm not seeing what I want to see it,
- 33:09Speaker 7: then I'm gonna keep moving. I'm going to try to
- 33:11Speaker 7: put myself in the action.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 33:14Speaker 1: And for someone you mentioned different train features, describe one
- 33:18Speaker 1: that's coming to mind here for this next week that
- 33:20Speaker 1: you're going to be hunting in Ohio.
- 33:24Speaker 7: Secondary points, mom, ditches. I really like those. A lot
- 33:31Speaker 7: of the stuff that I like to look for is
- 33:33Speaker 7: like a low spots, secondary bridges and ditches that maybe
- 33:39Speaker 7: dip into private or that has you know, part of
- 33:43Speaker 7: that has ag maybe catch catching the dough groups coming
- 33:46Speaker 7: up from the private that bet on these points and stuff,
- 33:49Speaker 7: and then obviously the bucks are going to parallel those.
- 33:53Speaker 2: M Yeah. Well, I mean you're right, listen.
- 33:55Speaker 1: I think we could try to overcomplicate this time period,
- 33:58Speaker 1: but in reality, man, you got to the dos in
- 34:00Speaker 1: a tight pinch. It's kind of the magic sauce of this.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Let me let me run this scenario by you. It's
- 34:06Speaker 1: in the morning and you have a setup where you
- 34:10Speaker 1: get winded by some doughs at like eight o'clock in
- 34:12Speaker 1: the morning.
- 34:13Speaker 2: What are you doing next?
- 34:15Speaker 8: Oh, I don't care if they wouldn't be.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:19Speaker 7: Yeah, you're just confident that where I'm sitting at, like,
- 34:23Speaker 7: even if my wind's bad, if I know I can
- 34:25Speaker 7: kill that buck before he hits my wind, I'm good
- 34:28Speaker 7: in my opinion. And a lot of times I've seen
- 34:31Speaker 7: where if a dough blows, a buck will come running
- 34:35Speaker 7: because that dough just to give up her position, because
- 34:37Speaker 7: a lot of times these does are actually trying to
- 34:39Speaker 7: hide from the bucks because they're getting pestered by you know, everything.
- 34:42Speaker 8: So you can make you can make a wrong that's
- 34:46Speaker 8: and have a buck run.
- 34:47Speaker 7: And I've done that where right before daylight, I'm walking
- 34:50Speaker 7: to the tree and I have a buck running at
- 34:52Speaker 7: me because he heard me from the ridge over.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's an exciting time of year.
- 35:05Speaker 1: There was a one hundred earlier this week, and there
- 35:07Speaker 1: was it was a dough that was not ready to
- 35:09Speaker 1: be bred, and she was just running. She would run
- 35:10Speaker 1: in a real big thicket and the bucks would get
- 35:13Speaker 1: down whenever flush her back out, and then she would
- 35:15Speaker 1: run over to another thicket. And for people that, I
- 35:18Speaker 1: feel that you just got to be you got to
- 35:20Speaker 1: be present to win this time of year. You got
- 35:22Speaker 1: to find a good spot and ride it out. How
- 35:24Speaker 1: do you how do you mentally under or I guess
- 35:28Speaker 1: how do you mentally? Way you're in there, it's November
- 35:31Speaker 1: eighth and you're not seeing much activity.
- 35:33Speaker 2: How much time are you going to give that spot
- 35:35Speaker 2: before you might move?
- 35:36Speaker 1: Move?
- 35:36Speaker 2: On to something else.
- 35:39Speaker 7: Like I said, I think it's just going to depend
- 35:41Speaker 7: on the spot and like what I know about it.
- 35:43Speaker 8: If it was a brand new spot.
- 35:46Speaker 7: I might be more ought to be like, Okay, I'm
- 35:48Speaker 7: going to get down and at least look around.
- 35:51Speaker 8: Maybe there's something.
- 35:52Speaker 7: Here that I don't know that's here that I haven't
- 35:54Speaker 7: seen yet, and it would make me more up to
- 35:56Speaker 7: get back in the tree, you know, or just get
- 35:59Speaker 7: down scout find a new spot. Now, if I'm in
- 36:01Speaker 7: a spot where I'm like, yeah, I've had cameras here
- 36:04Speaker 7: for a couple of years and I know like this
- 36:05Speaker 7: is the pocket and I just need to be patient,
- 36:07Speaker 7: then I'll stay in the churney.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Mm hmm. And real quick.
- 36:12Speaker 1: For people that want to know more about historical data,
- 36:15Speaker 1: what exactly is that? Is that based off of specific deer?
- 36:18Speaker 1: Is that based off of just general activity in that
- 36:20Speaker 1: area throughout this time period?
- 36:22Speaker 8: Both, yeah, a lot of it. I try to just
- 36:26Speaker 8: pick apart just the daylight pictures of bucks.
- 36:29Speaker 7: If I if I'm pulling cards and I got a
- 36:33Speaker 7: spot where there's a lot of a lot of nighttime activity,
- 36:37Speaker 7: that doesn't mean it's a bad spot, because eventually there's
- 36:39Speaker 7: bucks will slip through there in the daylight. But if
- 36:42Speaker 7: I find a spot where it's like, man, there was
- 36:44Speaker 7: five bucks in here in two days in daylight, Like
- 36:46Speaker 7: that's what I'm trying to find.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, do you have cameras in your backpack on
- 36:52Speaker 1: this trip where you're gonna go soak some more on
- 36:54Speaker 1: the fly?
- 36:56Speaker 8: I think it's reverse.
- 36:58Speaker 7: I've had the cameras out since February soaking, so it's
- 37:03Speaker 7: more like going there.
- 37:05Speaker 8: If I can, you know.
- 37:06Speaker 7: Past the camera before I get to my tree, I'll
- 37:08Speaker 7: pull the card and give me out.
- 37:10Speaker 8: Give me something. Look at why I'm in the tree too?
- 37:12Speaker 8: In past time?
- 37:15Speaker 2: Right?
- 37:16Speaker 8: Uh?
- 37:16Speaker 1: Do you have any tips for passing time in the
- 37:19Speaker 1: tree sinking? Cause a lot of people are logging the
- 37:20Speaker 1: most amount of hours in a tree for the next
- 37:23Speaker 1: seven days, and anyone that says it doesn't get a
- 37:25Speaker 1: little boring is lyne.
- 37:26Speaker 2: So what what tips do you have to pass the time.
- 37:29Speaker 1: While you're buying You're buying time for your buck to
- 37:32Speaker 1: show up, and you're like, man, I'm getting a little bored.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I'm getting a little sick of watching squirrels.
- 37:36Speaker 7: I can't sit here and tell you I'm the most
- 37:37Speaker 7: patient person in the World magazine.
- 37:39Speaker 8: I'm opposite. I'm so impatient to even funny, but I haven't.
- 37:44Speaker 7: I mean, having food helps, I've been I haven't done
- 37:47Speaker 7: it yet, but I've been telling myself. I'm like, man,
- 37:49Speaker 7: I need to bring a book or like a magazine
- 37:51Speaker 7: or something for that like midday, cause it does get
- 37:55Speaker 7: kind of like blinding to stay at your phone too
- 37:57Speaker 7: long too and that drains your battery and then you're
- 37:59Speaker 7: frustrated later in the day. And so I would say,
- 38:02Speaker 7: just food, bring a book, you know, something like that.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Yeah, No, I would be lying if I said I've
- 38:10Speaker 1: never brought a book before for those like this time
- 38:13Speaker 1: period where you can at least listen and hear and
- 38:16Speaker 1: you know, maybe learn something too along the way, as
- 38:18Speaker 1: far as you know, like I feel like everyone's trying
- 38:21Speaker 1: to pull out the back of tricks right now. Are
- 38:23Speaker 1: you gonna have your grund call right only antlers?
- 38:25Speaker 2: Are you going to use them? Tbd?
- 38:27Speaker 7: Once again, I don't carry horns very often, but I'll
- 38:32Speaker 7: always have a ground call with me, and I try
- 38:35Speaker 7: to use this sparingly and for really certain situations like
- 38:39Speaker 7: if I'm in a dire you know, situation where a
- 38:42Speaker 7: buck is acting like he would come into one, but
- 38:45Speaker 7: he's getting away from me, then I'm probably gonna use it.
- 38:48Speaker 7: But other than that, I pretty much try to just
- 38:50Speaker 7: be a silent be a silent killer.
- 38:54Speaker 2: I like it.
- 38:55Speaker 1: I like it so looking here, you know, kind of
- 38:58Speaker 1: guessing on the weather a little bit scale one to ten,
- 39:01Speaker 1: ten being, this is going to be the best week
- 39:03Speaker 1: of the entire year, one being is going to be
- 39:04Speaker 1: the worst week of the year. Where do you put
- 39:06Speaker 1: your prediction for big Buck activity from November fifth to
- 39:10Speaker 1: November twelfth, the grand event.
- 39:12Speaker 7: Here, I'll tell you what, man, I have had some
- 39:16Speaker 7: of the best hits I've ever had on November ten
- 39:19Speaker 7: And that's a year to year to hear, that's three years,
- 39:21Speaker 7: three years back to back to back for me, I've
- 39:23Speaker 7: had the best hits of the entire year on November.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Tenth, real quick, and then we'll let you go. What
- 39:32Speaker 1: did for last year? What was your setup for November tenth?
- 39:36Speaker 1: Like just to describe if some people can envision and
- 39:38Speaker 1: try to try to find something similar.
- 39:40Speaker 7: I was the head of a ditch in between three
- 39:42Speaker 7: different but dobetting areas.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Yep, I love it. I love it. Well, Chris, good
- 39:49Speaker 2: luck in Ohio.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Good luck in Pennsylvania as well, and I really appreciate
- 39:52Speaker 1: it hopping on here today.
- 39:53Speaker 2: This is the week we've been waiting for. Good luck.
- 39:55Speaker 8: Yep, appreciate it, man, all right.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Next up on the line, we have Tom Alexander at
- 40:00Speaker 1: Land Magazine with Land dot Com.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Tom, how is it going down in Texas?
- 40:06Speaker 5: Fantastic, especially in our area. So I'm really in southern Texas,
- 40:10Speaker 5: I would say, kind of what we consider to be
- 40:12Speaker 5: the Gulf Coast region. And oddly enough we hit our
- 40:16Speaker 5: hard rut down here through October. So it's been great
- 40:20Speaker 5: for the last four weeks.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Wonderful.
- 40:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's one of those things. Texas is huge and
- 40:24Speaker 1: people don't realize how big that state is. And you
- 40:27Speaker 1: have a couple different hunting areas throughout the state of Texas,
- 40:29Speaker 1: which I want to kind of get an.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Update throughout the region.
- 40:32Speaker 1: But as I mentioned to you here a little bit ago,
- 40:35Speaker 1: I like torture the guests with a trivia question. And
- 40:37Speaker 1: so Texas, Texas is not a state that I at
- 40:40Speaker 1: least think of when it comes to the sheer amount
- 40:42Speaker 1: of white tails being shot. So out of the last
- 40:45Speaker 1: twenty five years for all time single season whitetail harvest
- 40:49Speaker 1: out of the top twenty five.
- 40:51Speaker 2: How many times has it been Texas, I'd say every time.
- 40:57Speaker 1: You're really close, it's twenty three out of the twenty five. Wow,
- 41:02Speaker 1: and two thousand. Wisconsin is ranked number thirteen, and then
- 41:06Speaker 1: at twenty five Michigan is five hundred and forty four thousand.
- 41:10Speaker 1: But the all time record in the entire country nine
- 41:14Speaker 1: hundred and eighteen thousand deer harvested in the state of
- 41:16Speaker 1: Texas in twenty seventeen. So there's a lot of hunters
- 41:19Speaker 1: and a lot of deer down there.
- 41:21Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 41:21Speaker 5: I think we'll vary each year in between seven hundred
- 41:24Speaker 5: and fifty and a million.
- 41:25Speaker 2: It's crazy and mule deer.
- 41:28Speaker 5: Twenty three, twenty four thousand.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Wow yeah wow.
- 41:32Speaker 1: So we set the stage here. There's a lot of
- 41:34Speaker 1: deer that are gonna shot in the state of Texas
- 41:37Speaker 1: this fall. The rut is moving right along here in
- 41:40Speaker 1: the southern part of Texas. What's going on kind of
- 41:44Speaker 1: the general neck of the woods and for Texas from
- 41:47Speaker 1: the fifth to the twelfth, this is the time period
- 41:49Speaker 1: where a lot of people in the Midwest are, you know,
- 41:51Speaker 1: at peak excitement.
- 41:53Speaker 2: What's your level of excitement here in Texas.
- 41:56Speaker 5: It's always good because, like I said, we have so
- 41:59Speaker 5: many different regions, and it's a kind of a staggered event.
- 42:03Speaker 5: So you would say what I consider to be the
- 42:05Speaker 5: Gulf Coast region, so Gulf of America from the shoreline,
- 42:09Speaker 5: Galveston area, whatever, along that stretch of the coast inland,
- 42:13Speaker 5: say ninety or one hundred miles, and then going from
- 42:17Speaker 5: East Texas all the way down to South Texas, with
- 42:19Speaker 5: the exception of the far southern tip.
- 42:22Speaker 2: But that is all October.
- 42:24Speaker 5: So you know, if you plant an outright, you can
- 42:27Speaker 5: be during bow season. You can be in the rut
- 42:30Speaker 5: right there through that area. It's kind of odd we
- 42:33Speaker 5: actually manage to place south of Houston here in October.
- 42:37Speaker 5: The rut was just as hard as it could go,
- 42:40Speaker 5: and it's ninety five degrees outside, so we were out
- 42:43Speaker 5: shooting colder. My son shot two bucks one evening and
- 42:47Speaker 5: I remember field dressing them and it was ninety five degrees.
- 42:50Speaker 5: So they're just kind of strange, and they're out the
- 42:52Speaker 5: middle of the day hot as can be in their
- 42:54Speaker 5: running dos.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Wait a while.
- 42:56Speaker 5: So that's October, and then when you go into November
- 43:02Speaker 5: you start hitting what we consider to be far East
- 43:05Speaker 5: Texas and central Texas. So in reality, if you drew
- 43:09Speaker 5: a line, you know, halfway up the state of Texas
- 43:12Speaker 5: from east to west right, so just right through the middle.
- 43:17Speaker 5: Everything from that line north is November. And so if
- 43:23Speaker 5: you're in the hill country, which is where a lot
- 43:24Speaker 5: of people have recreational properties and they're hunting, it really
- 43:28Speaker 5: kind of it ties in the peak of the rut,
- 43:30Speaker 5: i'd say.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Is right before Thanksgiving.
- 43:32Speaker 5: So it's always a great time if you have property
- 43:35Speaker 5: up there, you're enjoying it, you might be spending Thanksgiving,
- 43:38Speaker 5: and it's a great time to hunt. And then we
- 43:41Speaker 5: roll into what we consider to be South Texas, the
- 43:44Speaker 5: brush country, and you know, that's just all I guess
- 43:48Speaker 5: you'd say everything south of that line, with the exception
- 43:50Speaker 5: of what's on the coast, and that's where the biggest
- 43:52Speaker 5: deer in Texas are killed. That's the majority of the
- 43:55Speaker 5: high fence places, and the peak of the rut there
- 43:59Speaker 5: is seems to be always right around Christmas. So I
- 44:03Speaker 5: know I have several friends that literally on Christmas Day,
- 44:07Speaker 5: after they celebrate Christmas, they have Christmas dinner, right and
- 44:10Speaker 5: as soon as that's over, everybody gets in the truck
- 44:13Speaker 5: and goes down to the deer leaser to the ranch,
- 44:15Speaker 5: and then they'll hunt through the end of January I'm sorry,
- 44:19Speaker 5: through the holiday season January second or third man.
- 44:23Speaker 1: That's a lot of that's a lot of opportunity to
- 44:25Speaker 1: chase rinting bucks a huge, huge window. That's that's actually
- 44:29Speaker 1: really incredible. I didn't realize. I didn't realize that that's
- 44:32Speaker 1: really neat.
- 44:33Speaker 5: Yeah, you time it right, you know, you can get
- 44:34Speaker 5: the rut through each one of those through all three months.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like following the waterfowl migration. Yeah, exactly.
- 44:43Speaker 1: So for folks that are maybe in Texas or maybe Oklahoma,
- 44:47Speaker 1: and I understand that's just a ginormous region what I
- 44:50Speaker 1: just described. But for the next five days or next
- 44:52Speaker 1: seven days, what are some things that you're personally keen
- 44:56Speaker 1: in on if you're going to be out in the standar,
- 44:57Speaker 1: out in the blind, chasing deer when the majority of
- 45:01Speaker 1: large bucks are shot, you know, over the next seven days.
- 45:05Speaker 5: You know, we're running cameras right now, and we do
- 45:08Speaker 5: a lot of feeding, so we try to stay off
- 45:10Speaker 5: for where we are down here, we try to stay
- 45:12Speaker 5: off of hunting the actual feeders and we're running protein,
- 45:16Speaker 5: so we'll corn the roads and just based and we
- 45:19Speaker 5: have certain stands set up for wind, and we just
- 45:22Speaker 5: corn the roads and if we can get some good
- 45:24Speaker 5: deer coming in. You know, it seems like most of
- 45:27Speaker 5: the big mature bucks there, you know, they've already kind
- 45:31Speaker 5: of gone through their cycle. They've had their dose pinned
- 45:33Speaker 5: down whatever it is, and done that first cycle. So
- 45:37Speaker 5: now they're out cruising, so you'll catch them just kind
- 45:40Speaker 5: of checking the wind and running up and down the
- 45:42Speaker 5: roads and just looking there. They probably lost I don't know,
- 45:47Speaker 5: fifteen percent of their body weight, so they've gone from
- 45:50Speaker 5: these big, just lumbering, older bucks and now they're they're
- 45:54Speaker 5: looking pretty fit, looking good, So kind of makes it
- 45:57Speaker 5: difficult when you're trying to judge an age class. But
- 46:00Speaker 5: now is the time to be killing what we consider
- 46:03Speaker 5: the five and a half six and six and a
- 46:05Speaker 5: half year old deer.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Mm hmm. Yeah, that's that's super exciting.
- 46:08Speaker 1: And it is crazy how how much the white tail
- 46:11Speaker 1: buck changes, you know, from summer to the end of
- 46:15Speaker 1: the rut. It actually is sometimes it can be unrecognizable
- 46:18Speaker 1: by the end of the season.
- 46:19Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, it's it's really neat to watch and when
- 46:22Speaker 5: you see like you know, we're after certain management bucks
- 46:25Speaker 5: and we might wait a little while for we're going
- 46:27Speaker 5: to shoot them, but you see him at one minute
- 46:29Speaker 5: or at the beginning of October, and like I said,
- 46:31Speaker 5: they're twenty percent heavier, and they just look like these
- 46:34Speaker 5: big lumbering almost like you know, a cow. They're just
- 46:38Speaker 5: they're they're they're ready, you know. And then now they're
- 46:42Speaker 5: just worn down and and very fit looking.
- 46:45Speaker 2: So it's fun, good time.
- 46:47Speaker 1: What is your your favorite part over the next seven
- 46:51Speaker 1: days for this time of year. Is it the anticipation
- 46:55Speaker 1: of anything that could happen? Is it bringing out the
- 46:58Speaker 1: rat on alers and smashing them? I mean, what has
- 47:00Speaker 1: you most excited over the next seven days.
- 47:02Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 47:02Speaker 5: Absolutely, you know, so get in an area where you
- 47:05Speaker 5: know some good deer coming in, you know, hopefully a
- 47:07Speaker 5: lot of dose. One of the problems we have here
- 47:09Speaker 5: is with hogs, because there are thousands of pigs I
- 47:12Speaker 5: think so far this year this year we probably killed
- 47:14Speaker 5: two hundred in havn't even put a dent in them.
- 47:18Speaker 5: So if you're corning a road, a lot of times
- 47:20Speaker 5: you'll have the deer come out and they start getting
- 47:22Speaker 5: nervous and then a pack of thirty hogs will come out,
- 47:25Speaker 5: so you try to shoot those and get them spooked
- 47:28Speaker 5: out of that area, and then the deer will start
- 47:30Speaker 5: coming back in. But right now, yeah, it's you know,
- 47:35Speaker 5: we've got an MLD permit, so we can shoot with
- 47:37Speaker 5: the gun in October. But me and my buddy we
- 47:40Speaker 5: both shoot traditional archery, so recurves long bows, and so
- 47:44Speaker 5: a lot of our shots are ten or fifteen yards
- 47:46Speaker 5: and that's the way we've got all of our stands
- 47:49Speaker 5: set up right now, so we're after some target bucks.
- 47:53Speaker 5: He was in a stand last night and actually tested me,
- 47:56Speaker 5: texted me, I'm sitting here at my desk and I
- 47:59Speaker 5: hear this, you know, crap, crap, crap. He had two
- 48:02Speaker 5: dos that came in and the butt circle around down
- 48:04Speaker 5: one of him, and it was a nice big six
- 48:07Speaker 5: and a half year old eight point that he was
- 48:08Speaker 5: after and bound it off. You know, but that would
- 48:12Speaker 5: have been a good season kill for him.
- 48:14Speaker 1: So you hunt with traditional archery equipment, which takes more preparation,
- 48:20Speaker 1: more focus than any other form of archery hunting, and
- 48:24Speaker 1: the moment of truth. A lot of people this week
- 48:26Speaker 1: are going to be full draw on a deer they've
- 48:28Speaker 1: been dreaming of for the last eleven and a half
- 48:31Speaker 1: months and the moment of truth. What do people need
- 48:35Speaker 1: to be thinking about? Is this deer's coming in to
- 48:38Speaker 1: execute a great shot. And with traditional archery equipment, I
- 48:41Speaker 1: think it's even more even more focus.
- 48:43Speaker 2: Yeah, well do what I say. Not what I do.
- 48:46Speaker 5: Is with traditional archery, you know, there's target paintings. So
- 48:49Speaker 5: if you're watching that deer, naturally you're going to pull back,
- 48:52Speaker 5: and it's something about a longbow or a recurve that
- 48:55Speaker 5: you're holding that full tension, and everything in your brain
- 48:59Speaker 5: just starts screaming at you. Let go, let go, because
- 49:01Speaker 5: you're looking at that deer. And if you do aim,
- 49:05Speaker 5: it's you know, if you're shooting at a three D target,
- 49:08Speaker 5: you will naturally aim low and it's okay to put
- 49:11Speaker 5: that tip down low below the arrow. But if that
- 49:14Speaker 5: deer is there at ten yards and you've been practicing
- 49:17Speaker 5: at twenty yards and holding just under the deer, it
- 49:21Speaker 5: just seems like every time that deer walks out at
- 49:23Speaker 5: ten yards and you put the tip of the arrow
- 49:25Speaker 5: right on him and you shoot over him or he ducks,
- 49:28Speaker 5: you know. So I think the most important thing is
- 49:33Speaker 5: just wait for a minute. When that deer comes in.
- 49:35Speaker 5: You always want to take that first best shot, but
- 49:38Speaker 5: usually you're going to have time, especially if you've got
- 49:41Speaker 5: corn out, So make sure you pick your spot, take
- 49:46Speaker 5: your time, draw back anchor get completely ready, and then
- 49:50Speaker 5: you know, like Joel Turner teaches, go through your process
- 49:55Speaker 5: and make that decision once you're on and your aim
- 49:58Speaker 5: make that decision of My next job is to release
- 50:01Speaker 5: this exactly the way that I practice. So if you
- 50:05Speaker 5: can go through that, then you're gonna do fine. I'm
- 50:09Speaker 5: really good at doing that. On hogs, terrible on.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Deer A half is the very best of us. That's
- 50:17Speaker 2: what I break it up. That's what it's fun.
- 50:19Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 50:20Speaker 1: Absolutely, So you have to speak for the whole state
- 50:22Speaker 1: of Texas, second largest land mass in the United States,
- 50:25Speaker 1: over the next seven days on a scale one to ten,
- 50:28Speaker 1: ten being this might be the best week of the
- 50:30Speaker 1: year in the state of Texas for this season, and
- 50:33Speaker 1: number one being this might be one of the worst
- 50:35Speaker 1: weeks of the entire year. On a scale one to ten,
- 50:37Speaker 1: Where do you put this upcoming seven days for the
- 50:40Speaker 1: state of Texas for your report, I'd.
- 50:46Speaker 5: Say really good, we've had a coal front come through,
- 50:49Speaker 5: so it really makes a difference here. Last night, after
- 50:52Speaker 5: going I went out, went to the gym, then went
- 50:54Speaker 5: to the grocery store and it's sixty five degrees outside,
- 50:57Speaker 5: and there's people walking around and down jackets and their
- 50:59Speaker 5: nit caps on with a little ball on top. And
- 51:02Speaker 5: that's normal at sixty five degrees here, So we just
- 51:05Speaker 5: don't get that cold. So this front is blown through,
- 51:08Speaker 5: it's been really pleasant outside. So right now in our area,
- 51:12Speaker 5: it should be outstanding over the next week and then
- 51:15Speaker 5: it's just going to roll as the weather goes and
- 51:18Speaker 5: the moon face and all that, depending upon the area
- 51:21Speaker 5: that you're in. But for here, right now, in our
- 51:24Speaker 5: area hunting the rut, the tail end of the rut,
- 51:27Speaker 5: this next week should be really good, wonderful.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Well, Tom, good luck. I hope you have a great
- 51:32Speaker 2: rest of your season.
- 51:33Speaker 1: I appreciate you hopping on here and educating everyone about
- 51:36Speaker 1: the state of Texas because there's a lot to learn here.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Right all right, thanks Jake, All.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Right, there, you guys have it. I hope you guys
- 51:43Speaker 1: enjoy this week. This is the week we've been waiting
- 51:45Speaker 1: for all year. It's the week we're gonna be waiting
- 51:47Speaker 1: for fifty one weeks again, So get out there, enjoy it,
- 51:50Speaker 1: Enjoy all the moments. Remind yourself of some of the
- 51:53Speaker 1: advice here that the guests have provided, and get out
- 51:56Speaker 1: there and enjoy it.
- 51:57Speaker 2: That is it. We will see you next week on
- 51:59Speaker 2: rough fresh good luck.
