Latest / Foul Territory / Mike Shildt’s SHOCKING retirement, NLCS preview, ALCS Game 2 preview
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Doubleheader day in the LCS. We're getting the NL and
- 0:08Speaker 1: the AL side. I'm very excited about it, and we're
- 0:10Speaker 1: going to mostly talk about the postseason, not just during
- 0:13Speaker 1: the show. We are also going to talk after the game.
- 0:17Speaker 1: The first game, the ALCS Game two matchup between the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Blue Jays and the Mariners. Mariners up one oh. We
- 0:23Speaker 1: will be live on YouTube for a postgame show, just
- 0:26Speaker 1: like we were last night. Letting everyone know real quick
- 0:29Speaker 1: before we start, and actually we're going to start with
- 0:32Speaker 1: non postseason news, breaking news. But KP is a manager job.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Not sexy anymore. Like a third of the league is open.
- 0:43Speaker 2: It's a very dangerous job. I think it's still sexy,
- 0:46Speaker 2: but it seems like you got to win right now
- 0:48Speaker 2: or there's no lead up to it. There's no build up.
- 0:52Speaker 2: It's win now or get fired. Kay.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I think it's probably lost a little bit of luster
- 1:01Speaker 3: because of the fact that you're just basically a puppet
- 1:03Speaker 3: and you're told what to do, and when it doesn't
- 1:05Speaker 3: go well, they cut the strings out.
- 1:08Speaker 1: See Uh, okay, then it is less sexy. I mean
- 1:13Speaker 1: that's what you're saying.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Lost some luster. It's still sexy. I mean it's still
- 1:17Speaker 3: sexy for maybe you've never had it.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Maybe if you're a guy that doesn't want to
- 1:23Speaker 2: get the strings pulled, it's a win now situation. But
- 1:26Speaker 2: if you're a little bit more willing to get your
- 1:28Speaker 2: strings pulled, you can keep your job a little bit longer.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Okay, so let's get into this breaking news, and I
- 1:36Speaker 1: guess is going to join us in a moment too.
- 1:38Speaker 1: But let's hit it charging about charging the mound with
- 1:44Speaker 1: the breaking news that Mike Shilt is retired from his
- 1:47Speaker 1: position as manager of the San Diego Padres said two
- 1:51Speaker 1: successful seasons in the regular season, ninety plus wins, playoff appearances.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Padres bounce in the wild card round this time around.
- 1:59Speaker 1: But I think that most people expected him to return. KP.
- 2:03Speaker 1: You see this and you think, what, well.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Here retired and is it like retired in quotations or
- 2:10Speaker 2: did he really retire? I need a little bit more information.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Okay, we do have a board we can read really
- 2:16Speaker 1: quick and then we will talk to Kevin A. C.
- 2:19Speaker 1: From the San Diego Union Tribune. We do have a
- 2:21Speaker 1: quote board with a little bit more info from Mike
- 2:24Speaker 1: schlt on why he did what he did. He said
- 2:27Speaker 1: it is a decision that I thought about during the
- 2:29Speaker 1: season and became at peace with over the last ten days.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I gave every fiber of my being to help achieve
- 2:34Speaker 1: Peter Sidler's vision of bringing the World Series Championship to
- 2:36Speaker 1: San Diego. We fell short of the ultimate goal, but
- 2:39Speaker 1: I am proud of with the player staff in organization,
- 2:41Speaker 1: we're able to accomplish the last two seasons, the grind
- 2:43Speaker 1: of the baseball season has taken a severe toll on
- 2:46Speaker 1: me mentally, physically, and emotionally. While has always been about
- 2:49Speaker 1: serving others, it's time I take care of myself and
- 2:52Speaker 1: exit on my terms. Kevin, a c from the San
- 2:56Speaker 1: Diego Union Tribune just broke this story. He is joining
- 3:00Speaker 1: us right now on FT. Kevin, we appreciate the quick
- 3:04Speaker 1: hop on to the show. What is your reaction to
- 3:07Speaker 1: this news when you found out about it?
- 3:12Speaker 4: Be careful how I how I answer that I wasn't
- 3:14Speaker 4: entirely shocked. Look, there's always many layers to a story,
- 3:19Speaker 4: but I want to make sure that I make it
- 3:21Speaker 4: clear that I believe it is one true.
- 3:25Speaker 5: The things that Mike said.
- 3:27Speaker 4: He seemed weary. He seemed I don't know if burnt
- 3:31Speaker 4: out was something that I would have said before, but
- 3:34Speaker 4: now it certainly makes sense. It's a demanding job. I
- 3:38Speaker 4: have never covered a baseball manager who lives every single
- 3:44Speaker 4: game the way that Mike Schilt does. And you know,
- 3:49Speaker 4: working for AJ Preller is is uh. And I'm not
- 3:52Speaker 4: saying that it's not demanding to work in any organization
- 3:55Speaker 4: and have one of these thirty jobs, but working for
- 3:58Speaker 4: a J.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Prellers is demanding.
- 4:00Speaker 4: There's a lot of pressure, and so I want to
- 4:03Speaker 4: make clear that, like, if I believe that Mike is
- 4:06Speaker 4: telling the absolute truth about this, had worn him down.
- 4:12Speaker 5: So that's where we're at.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I mean, this is obviously very fresh news for everybody.
- 4:18Speaker 3: But when I read an article last year about how A. J.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Preller was pretty difficult to work with, was it a
- 4:27Speaker 3: more so what you had said about Preller kind of
- 4:30Speaker 3: being tough to work with and invested so much into
- 4:34Speaker 3: players or was it some of the drama that was
- 4:38Speaker 3: around the players or is it just a whole overarching
- 4:41Speaker 3: he put everything he had into it, and this is it.
- 4:45Speaker 4: I think Mike put everything he had into it, and
- 4:48Speaker 4: I don't know if that's it right. Like, there's many
- 4:52Speaker 4: layers to a story, and some of them have been
- 4:54Speaker 4: peeling back, and some of them will continue to peel back.
- 4:57Speaker 4: But I I always hesitate because I know what the
- 5:01Speaker 4: narrative is out there about AJ Preller, So I always
- 5:04Speaker 4: hesitate to just flat out talk about, oh yeah, Aja's
- 5:06Speaker 4: difficult to work with, or because I don't think that's
- 5:09Speaker 4: necessarily true, or AJ's hard to work for, which I
- 5:13Speaker 4: do think can be in the manager's seat can be
- 5:16Speaker 4: somewhat accurate. But like, look what AJ's Pereller has done
- 5:22Speaker 4: with the podres, look at the success, look at the
- 5:24Speaker 4: roster turnover, and how there's a good team. There's a
- 5:29Speaker 4: certain way. And Mike Schild came into this job with
- 5:31Speaker 4: eyes wide open about that. He was a consultant and
- 5:34Speaker 4: an a part time coach. Basically, he was a de
- 5:36Speaker 4: facto member of the coaching staff for two years under
- 5:38Speaker 4: Bob Melvin. There there were no real surprises about this job.
- 5:42Speaker 5: So I really do.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Think, like again, it struck me from the start, and
- 5:46Speaker 4: I spent fifteen years covering the NFL in between my
- 5:50Speaker 4: baseball beat writing gigs. And he's like an NFL coach
- 5:54Speaker 4: who has to live one game a year or a week.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Mike lives and just give gives everything every single game,
- 6:02Speaker 4: and he's so invested in the players. And as you know,
- 6:05Speaker 4: Mike is single, Mike doesn't have children, Mike lives baseball,
- 6:09Speaker 4: and I am convinced I think he's a good man
- 6:14Speaker 4: at heart, and I'm convinced that he wants to kind
- 6:17Speaker 4: of get.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Work on his well being.

- 7:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that was going to kind of lead into my question.
- 7:27Speaker 2: He talks about his physical emotion just to confirm he
- 7:33Speaker 2: doesn't have any sort of illness that is forcing him out.
- 7:35Speaker 2: This is kind of a preemptive so he doesn't kind
- 7:38Speaker 2: of go into you know, cardiac arrests or any sort
- 7:41Speaker 2: of health issue.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Yeah, he volunteered that to me, like when he talked
- 7:48Speaker 4: about his health, and we did have a conversation in
- 7:50Speaker 4: addition to the letter that he sent, and he made
- 7:53Speaker 4: sure that I understood that there was no pressing, serious
- 7:57Speaker 4: health issue. But I think all of us who put
- 8:00Speaker 4: a lot into whatever the grind of your life is
- 8:04Speaker 4: can understand that that does have a can have an
- 8:07Speaker 4: effect on your stress and all that can have an
- 8:09Speaker 4: effect on your.
- 8:10Speaker 5: Health, lack of sleep.
- 8:12Speaker 4: And I think that Mike's you know, season and a
- 8:16Speaker 4: manager's job is twelve months a year. It's not like
- 8:19Speaker 4: a coach or somebody else. It's twelve months a year.
- 8:21Speaker 4: But during that those those eight months, it was sleep work,
- 8:26Speaker 4: sleep work, sleep work, Monday through Sunday, basically. And I
- 8:30Speaker 4: think that Mike was ready to take at least. Look,
- 8:32Speaker 4: we all know what retire means a lot of times.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Mike's fifty six years old, hopefully a long life ahead
- 8:39Speaker 4: of him.
- 8:40Speaker 6: He was.
- 8:41Speaker 4: I do believe whatever else came into play, Mike Shult
- 8:45Speaker 4: was ready to take a step off the very fast
- 8:49Speaker 4: moving treadmill.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Do you get any player reactions early this quick from
- 8:54Speaker 3: the current team?
- 8:55Speaker 4: Yeah, Look, I've had some text with players. I don't
- 8:58Speaker 4: have anything to report on how they how they feel.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I've not spoken or interviewed any players.
- 9:05Speaker 2: All right, what's next? Where do they go? And a
- 9:08Speaker 2: lot of managerial jobs open right now? Where do you
- 9:11Speaker 2: kind of rank that Padres job in terms of you know, appeal?
- 9:15Speaker 4: I'm sure you guys have talked about it, and it's
- 9:17Speaker 4: sort of fascinating, right, It's not just a bunch of
- 9:19Speaker 4: crap jobs out there. You got the Orioles, the Braves,
- 9:22Speaker 4: the Padres. I don't know that.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Look, I know the Padre is better than anyone. I
- 9:26Speaker 5: think it's a good job.
- 9:27Speaker 4: I think there's a good core coming back, and I
- 9:30Speaker 4: think it's a really good job. But maybe some people
- 9:33Speaker 4: have the braves at the top, maybe people have the Orioles.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I think it's a really good job. Internally, you have
- 9:40Speaker 4: a few candidates. It's a fairly inexperienced staff. But Ruby Theebler,
- 9:45Speaker 4: the pitching coach, Hass you know, he's talked before about
- 9:47Speaker 4: wanting to manage obviously has done a really good job
- 9:50Speaker 4: as the pitching coach. AJ Ellis is a was a
- 9:53Speaker 4: confidant of Schiltz and is a confidant of AJ Prowlers,
- 9:56Speaker 4: and you know, I think people consider him the future manager. Hey,
- 10:01Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna put it out there that Albert
- 10:04Speaker 4: Pool Hools makes all the sense in the world as well.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Is that the is that the ilk that you would
- 10:11Speaker 3: think AJ Preller would go with in a sense of
- 10:14Speaker 3: when you say Albert Pool host no experience, really uncertain,
- 10:20Speaker 3: but probably isn't willing to be told what to do
- 10:24Speaker 3: if if we're going with that narrative that I know
- 10:26Speaker 3: you try to stay away from with AJ, but knowing
- 10:29Speaker 3: Athy a little bit, that's kind of his narrative. Do
- 10:32Speaker 3: you see it being a veteran or do you see
- 10:35Speaker 3: it being like you said, the guys that have little experience.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Here's one thing I know covering AJ Preller is I
- 10:43Speaker 4: never predict or say where AJ Preller is gonna go. Right,
- 10:46Speaker 4: Like he hired Jace Kindler, who I believe could be
- 10:50Speaker 4: a really good manager, but was not going to be
- 10:52Speaker 4: in twenty twenty having the experience level that he had
- 10:56Speaker 4: at that time.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Then he hired Bob Melvin, who everyone.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Was like, oh man, Bob Melvin is the best, and
- 11:00Speaker 4: he's got all this experience, and you got my he
- 11:02Speaker 4: hires Mike Schilt, someone like Albert.
- 11:05Speaker 5: Poohols would do his research.
- 11:07Speaker 4: And one thing I want to make clear that a
- 11:08Speaker 4: lot of the narrative about AJ Preller is false and
- 11:12Speaker 4: and in that AJ is not controlling.
- 11:16Speaker 5: AJ is relentless in his work.
- 11:21Speaker 4: He is and he's even involved there also, But he
- 11:25Speaker 4: is the manager here makes out his lineup.
- 11:29Speaker 5: AJ Preller might be like, hey, what do you think?
- 11:31Speaker 4: And then the next day he might be like, well, hey,
- 11:33Speaker 4: let's talk about that again. But he is not telling
- 11:36Speaker 4: the manager where to put someone or who to play.
- 11:40Speaker 4: The manager has probably from my understanding, I only cover
- 11:43Speaker 4: one team. I talk to a lot of people, people
- 11:45Speaker 4: that were here, people that come here from other places.
- 11:49Speaker 4: The manager of the padres has more autonomy than most.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Okay, that's interesting question for you going back the narratives. Yeah, exactly,
- 11:59Speaker 1: I get it. And obviously everything's different from what it
- 12:01Speaker 1: was even ten years ago. Right when we say, oh,
- 12:04Speaker 1: manager has more autonomy, like the manager of the most
- 12:07Speaker 1: autonomy now compared to ten years ago is a major
- 12:10Speaker 1: major difference. Front offices have much more of an impact.
- 12:13Speaker 1: So keep that in mind for the audience for the
- 12:15Speaker 1: entire sport. Question for you on Chilt when he says retirement,
- 12:19Speaker 1: does that mean he's done from baseball? Like, to me,
- 12:21Speaker 1: retirement means I'm done versus stepping down. So do you
- 12:26Speaker 1: get the I don't know. Do you get the inkling
- 12:29Speaker 1: that he'll come back to baseball at some point? I
- 12:31Speaker 1: mean Tyr Francona retired for what five minutes and then
- 12:34Speaker 1: he came back.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Yeah, that's why I say, right, we all know what
- 12:37Speaker 4: retire often means. And I don't want to speak for Mike,
- 12:40Speaker 4: and I think Mike has made it very clear that
- 12:43Speaker 4: for now he needs to get away from the grind.
- 12:47Speaker 5: Do I believe that a man who.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Loves and here's the only and I should say the only.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Here was the shocking part of this. Mike schild loves baseball,
- 12:56Speaker 4: he loves players, he loves building relationships, and he's a
- 12:59Speaker 4: really good he knows the game. So that made it shocking, like, Wow,
- 13:05Speaker 4: Mike is walking away. So do I think that we're
- 13:08Speaker 4: not ever going to hear from Mike Shilt in some
- 13:10Speaker 4: capacity in Major League Baseball again? No. I believe Mike
- 13:15Speaker 4: Schildt will be back working somewhere in some capacity again.
- 13:19Speaker 5: But for now I take him at face.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Value that he's retiring and that he needs to take
- 13:25Speaker 4: care of himself. I mean, I'm aware of some of
- 13:27Speaker 4: the plans that he has coming up in terms of
- 13:29Speaker 4: his personal life that you know, hasn't been a whole
- 13:32Speaker 4: lot of personal life for Mike Shilts as the manager,
- 13:39Speaker 4: by the way.
- 13:40Speaker 1: So yeah, that's the last one for me. I think
- 13:42Speaker 1: that actually makes this the most shocking. It's not somebody
- 13:45Speaker 1: stepping down, it's somebody that's been a lifer in the
- 13:48Speaker 1: sport who really worked in a way that Brian Snicker did. Right,
- 13:53Speaker 1: those two got comparisons because they had to really work
- 13:56Speaker 1: to get to their spot. Then they had success. Then
- 13:58Speaker 1: he moved from Saint Louis to San Diego after the
- 14:01Speaker 1: disagreements there. So you're just like, this guy has made
- 14:04Speaker 1: it to where he always wanted to be, and you
- 14:07Speaker 1: would have expected him to be there until they're yanking
- 14:10Speaker 1: the jersey off. So that's why for me it's surprising.
- 14:12Speaker 1: But you do have to keep in mind he's a
- 14:14Speaker 1: human being and he wants to do his own thing
- 14:16Speaker 1: for a little bit. So we really appreciate the time.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Thanks for hopping on and for breaking the story and
- 14:21Speaker 1: jumping in with us right afterwards. Appreciate it, all right,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I'll take care all right, some other manager news here
- 14:27Speaker 1: in the break, and then we'll pop in and talk
- 14:30Speaker 1: about the Tigers falling in that marathon. Cody Stavenhagen's going
- 14:33Speaker 1: to join us in a couple of minutes. Multiple reports
- 14:36Speaker 1: just now say that Rob Thompson is back as manager
- 14:39Speaker 1: with the Phillies. Not a big surprise there, Krats. I'll
- 14:41Speaker 1: give you both so you can react since we only
- 14:43Speaker 1: have a minute and a half here. Also, the Angels
- 14:46Speaker 1: are talking to a couple others now beyond just Albert
- 14:49Speaker 1: Poohols regarding that manager opening no reason yet to believe
- 14:53Speaker 1: he isn't the front runner this all. According to John Hayman,
- 14:55Speaker 1: Tory Hunter is believed to be on that list and
- 14:59Speaker 1: others like Wound. Sam Blum from The Athletic also mentioned
- 15:02Speaker 1: Tory in the running.
- 15:06Speaker 3: I hope they're doing their due diligence. I hope they're
- 15:08Speaker 3: not just going a small little ring and Arty is like, hey,
- 15:13Speaker 3: I want this. I want that because it's time to
- 15:16Speaker 3: see why other people in the league don't think the
- 15:19Speaker 3: Angels are very good and not just wow, you know,
- 15:22Speaker 3: we're unlucky. If Anthony Rendon was an MVP, we would
- 15:26Speaker 3: be in the World Series right now. So I hope
- 15:28Speaker 3: they're doing their due diligence. And the Phillies thing, no brainer,
- 15:33Speaker 3: no brainer. I'm glad everybody stopped, can stop talking about it.
- 15:36Speaker 3: He's coming back topper. Good for you.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Yeah, well we know that Arti Marino likes names KP.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I mean, he goes after big names all the time
- 15:44Speaker 1: in free agencies. So my bet is on a name
- 15:46Speaker 1: that we all know. Well, if it's not Albert, it
- 15:48Speaker 1: could be Tory. I think it's going to be someone
- 15:50Speaker 1: like that.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you nailed it. I mean, you know, talking to
- 15:55Speaker 2: GM there They've missed on a ton of free agents
- 15:57Speaker 2: and they've all been big names, so hopefully a big
- 16:00Speaker 2: name doesn't kind of equate to a miss on the manager.
- 16:03Speaker 2: But they need to kind of change the narrative there.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Yep, Hey, we're here for two minutes to scrutinize the
- 16:12Speaker 1: umpires in the postseason, the good, the bad, the ugly.
- 16:17Speaker 1: We will start with the ugly, and some of this
- 16:19Speaker 1: will get fixed next year, but not all of it.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I'm not going to fix all the misses. So You've
- 16:23Speaker 1: got a couple tweets we'll roll out. First off, overall
- 16:26Speaker 1: the way that umpires have performed thus far, we have
- 16:30Speaker 1: one hundred and seventy six calls missed during the divisional
- 16:34Speaker 1: series that included eighteen incorrectly called balls and two strike counts.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Instead of striking out, twelve of those batters ended up
- 16:41Speaker 1: reaching base. And then we want to give love to
- 16:45Speaker 1: Alan Porter, right, guys, he had a standout performance and
- 16:49Speaker 1: is he one of the best. There's the umpire scorecard
- 16:53Speaker 1: for him in that game. Five alds and skrats. You
- 16:57Speaker 1: can take this over since you know how hard it
- 16:59Speaker 1: would be to catch a fifteen inning marathon game. But
- 17:03Speaker 1: then Alan porter. Calling balls and strikes for that long
- 17:05Speaker 1: sounds pretty difficult.
- 17:08Speaker 5: And it's all different arms.
- 17:10Speaker 3: It's not like he saw like four pitchers on each
- 17:13Speaker 3: side each team throughout seven guys, so the ball's moving
- 17:16Speaker 3: in different directions. Big Al from the local PA district
- 17:22Speaker 3: right here, he's about thirty minutes down the road. So awesome.
- 17:26Speaker 3: I'm kind of hoping I see him in the World
- 17:28Speaker 3: Series because Al came up through the minor leagues with us,
- 17:31Speaker 3: and for him to he's always been he's always been
- 17:35Speaker 3: locked in. He's always been a little bit of a
- 17:36Speaker 3: smaller zone, so you get less wrong when you have
- 17:40Speaker 3: a smaller zone.
- 17:41Speaker 5: But that was a good game, KP.
- 17:45Speaker 1: We both love Omaha Steaks. My latest order six private

- 18:04Speaker 1: You have been a long time Omaha Steaks guy too.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Back in college, I would always order steaks. I'd
- 18:10Speaker 2: put them in my freezer. And that's the reason I
- 18:13Speaker 2: bulked up is because I always had fresh steaks in
- 18:16Speaker 2: my freezer, ready to.

- 18:43Speaker 1: code foul at checkout. Looking ahead, let's talk about the Alcs. Kevin,
- 18:50Speaker 1: what do you think about the Blue Jays and the
- 18:52Speaker 1: Mariners the rest of the way here?
- 18:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I was. I was texting both of the voices
- 18:57Speaker 2: the Toronto Blue Jays last night before the game, and
- 18:59Speaker 2: I was telling them that was the one game I
- 19:01Speaker 2: was really worried about. Obviously, there's four teams left. Every
- 19:05Speaker 2: team is really good. But when you factoring they played
- 19:07Speaker 2: a fifteen inning game, they probably partied their butts off.
- 19:11Speaker 2: They got on that plane, they flew all the way
- 19:12Speaker 2: across the country. They get to Toronto, they have to
- 19:15Speaker 2: be at the field that day for media Day. They
- 19:18Speaker 2: were just on this whirlwind of emotion and adrenaline. You
- 19:20Speaker 2: can't really even explain it unless you've lived it. They
- 19:23Speaker 2: don't even know where they're at right now. They're just
- 19:25Speaker 2: like on this adrenaline high right now. And I felt
- 19:28Speaker 2: like the Blue Jays were in prime position. They had
- 19:31Speaker 2: their ace on the mound, they had rest, they were
- 19:33Speaker 2: at home. It just felt like it was one of
- 19:35Speaker 2: those games that was too good to be true. And
- 19:37Speaker 2: that's the beauty of baseball, because the Blue Jays were
- 19:40Speaker 2: probably heavily favored, they had their ace on the mound,
- 19:42Speaker 2: they're at home. They played unbelievable at home. It was
- 19:45Speaker 2: a big talk during the Yankees series that maybe the
- 19:48Speaker 2: Blue Jays are cheating at home because their numbers at
- 19:51Speaker 2: home were so good. But kudos to the Mariners for
- 19:54Speaker 2: just kind of riding that emotional roller coaster, that adrenaline
- 19:57Speaker 2: wave and going in there and taking Game one.
- 20:00Speaker 3: This is why the game of baseball is so fun,
- 20:03Speaker 3: in the sense that everything was stacked up against the Mariners.
- 20:07Speaker 3: In what KP was saying, and I completely agree with him,
- 20:11Speaker 3: there will be some type of like hull, like a
- 20:14Speaker 3: drop off, and the Mariners to beat the J's again
- 20:19Speaker 3: at home, if since they didn't beat him last night,
- 20:23Speaker 3: to beat him again, Like the Blue Jays are just
- 20:26Speaker 3: they're gonna just turn it up just a notch. The
- 20:29Speaker 3: Mariners are gonna have to turn it up a notch too,
- 20:31Speaker 3: And do they have that extra gear or is today
- 20:34Speaker 3: the day that they go? Oh man, I'm exhausted because
- 20:38Speaker 3: the pitcher they got on the mound threw thirty five
- 20:42Speaker 3: pitches on his bullpen day in a winner take all
- 20:45Speaker 3: elimination game, so you might not be able to go
- 20:48Speaker 3: quite to the well like he did in his last
- 20:51Speaker 3: playoff game where he threw almost one hundred pitches like
- 20:55Speaker 3: Ovian Gilbert's gonna give you what he has, and it's
- 20:57Speaker 3: a lot. But this Blue Jays lineup is relentless, and
- 21:01Speaker 3: you saw it last night. They didn't strike they didn't
- 21:04Speaker 3: strike out a ton, but they put a lot of
- 21:06Speaker 3: balls in play early and it didn't you know, it
- 21:09Speaker 3: didn't make didn't make Bryce Miller work that hard. So
- 21:13Speaker 3: to me, I think the Blue Jays are in a
- 21:16Speaker 3: fine position. The Mariners did what they wanted to do
- 21:19Speaker 3: and maybe if they don't like let up, then maybe
- 21:24Speaker 3: they can get a second one. But the Jays to me,
- 21:26Speaker 3: if they just don't let Cal Rowley beat them, I
- 21:28Speaker 3: think they take this game.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Okay, KP A couple questions. First off, I'm a little
- 21:35Speaker 1: bit against krats on the contact and the quicker at
- 21:40Speaker 1: bats hurting them because I feel like it's part of
- 21:43Speaker 1: their game, or at least for half the lineup, it's
- 21:46Speaker 1: part of their game. Attacking early in counts. They made contact.
- 21:48Speaker 1: It's not like they were a mess, and there was
- 21:50Speaker 1: some decent contact sometimes. Also, you square the ball up
- 21:54Speaker 1: goes into a glove. One stat that stood out to me,
- 21:56Speaker 1: Alex Fast, who's a stat cast guy, said Toronto recorded
- 22:00Speaker 1: a babbitt last night in game one of four to two.
- 22:03Speaker 1: That is the lowest batting average on balls and play.
- 22:06Speaker 1: That's what it stands for in a postseason game this year.
- 22:09Speaker 1: It's tied for the fifth lowest for any game this year,
- 22:12Speaker 1: regular and postseason. It's one of the fifty lowest babbits
- 22:15Speaker 1: for a single game, regular or postseason in the last
- 22:18Speaker 1: five seasons. They got a little bit unlucky. They make
- 22:22Speaker 1: good contact.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I think they keep doing it. The Yeah, I think
- 22:26Speaker 2: I saw the stat cast thing. I think the first
- 22:28Speaker 2: four hitters in the game were like the hardest four
- 22:31Speaker 2: exit vilows of the game. Obviously, Springer hit the first
- 22:33Speaker 2: pitch out, but that's the way they've been playing all year.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I don't expect them to change. And having the ability
- 22:40Speaker 2: over the last series to be a Blue Jays media
- 22:42Speaker 2: member being down on the field, being able to talk
- 22:44Speaker 2: to the hitting of coaches about their approach. That's their
- 22:48Speaker 2: big approach is they want guys to be aggressive if
- 22:50Speaker 2: they're getting their pitch in their zone, and last night
- 22:52Speaker 2: was no different. Sometimes you just got to tip your
- 22:55Speaker 2: hat to a pitcher. The guy on the mound is elite,
- 22:58Speaker 2: but they play the law of averages. The more times
- 23:02Speaker 2: you put a ball in play, the greater chances you
- 23:04Speaker 2: have to get a hit. And that's not just individually,
- 23:06Speaker 2: that's collectively as a team. As long as they're not
- 23:08Speaker 2: striking out and they're continuing to move the ball forward,
- 23:11Speaker 2: they're going to be in great shape.
- 23:15Speaker 1: The other question I have for you is management of
- 23:19Speaker 1: when to remove a starting pitcher. I felt okay, but
- 23:23Speaker 1: then I looked online and it was a cesspool of
- 23:26Speaker 1: why did you remove Kevin Gossman that soon? Did you
- 23:29Speaker 1: feel that way and do you think that will impact
- 23:32Speaker 1: this series here. I mean that because the Blue Jays
- 23:36Speaker 1: bullpen is solid, I wouldn't say incredible, and Kevin Gossman
- 23:42Speaker 1: is their top starter. Tray Savage obviously should look good.
- 23:45Speaker 1: He looked amazing in his first start for them in
- 23:48Speaker 1: the Alds. Do you think there's any concerns that the
- 23:51Speaker 1: Blue Jays removed their starters too early as they have
- 23:54Speaker 1: PTSD from the Jose Barrios situation.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I think that's what it all kind of
- 23:59Speaker 2: stems from. I'm a little hyper sensitive in answering this
- 24:02Speaker 2: question because I was just there a week ago and
- 24:06Speaker 2: I had a lot of these conversations with John Snyder,
- 24:09Speaker 2: and he was very open in his media conferences with
- 24:11Speaker 2: the media members about his evolution of being a manager,
- 24:15Speaker 2: and he admits that, you know, he was a little
- 24:18Speaker 2: bit more of a yes man and he got a
- 24:19Speaker 2: little bit more comfortable in his skin where he feels
- 24:22Speaker 2: like he is going to make the right decision for
- 24:24Speaker 2: his ball club, whether it goes against the grain of
- 24:26Speaker 2: what the front office or analytics believe. So I have
- 24:29Speaker 2: to trust that maybe there was something about Gosman, maybe
- 24:34Speaker 2: the way his stuff was looking, or him being a
- 24:36Speaker 2: little bit fatigued. You have to remember we're you know,
- 24:39Speaker 2: we're deep into the season. He's throwing a lot of innings.
- 24:41Speaker 2: He maybe he's a little bit more hyper sensitive about,
- 24:44Speaker 2: you know, him getting his pitch count up, him gonna
- 24:46Speaker 2: need Cosmon to pitch again later in probably Game five.
- 24:49Speaker 2: There was a lot of decisions that you know, when
- 24:52Speaker 2: I'm sitting up in the press box, the game moves
- 24:54Speaker 2: really slow, and I remember how fast it was as
- 24:57Speaker 2: a player, and it's hard for me to ever kind
- 25:00Speaker 2: of even think about how fast it moves as a manager.
- 25:03Speaker 2: But I gotta believe John Snyder because there was moves
- 25:05Speaker 2: he made in that Yankee series that went really far
- 25:07Speaker 2: against the grain and you could see his evolution of
- 25:10Speaker 2: a manager and being like, I'm going to live and
- 25:12Speaker 2: die with this decision, whether people are going to agree
- 25:15Speaker 2: with it or not. So it's easy for me to
- 25:17Speaker 2: sit up in my booth and say, yeah, they should
- 25:19Speaker 2: have left him in there. That's your ace. But I
- 25:21Speaker 2: think he had some internal information that was probably telling
- 25:24Speaker 2: him it was time to get him out of the game.
- 25:27Speaker 3: And maybe it's at that pitch count. I mean, I'm
- 25:29Speaker 3: looking back at his last three starts, one against the
- 25:32Speaker 3: Yankees seventy five pitches last night, seventy six and when
- 25:37Speaker 3: he came out of the game, like, yes, I get it.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Had he not walked Julio, does he give him the
- 25:44Speaker 3: start of the sixth inning? In my opinion, yes, But
- 25:48Speaker 3: as a manager, you have to make those decisions. Some
- 25:51Speaker 3: of those decisions are thought about before the game, but
- 25:54Speaker 3: then you're visualizing. You're seeing what it looks like. Maybe
- 25:58Speaker 3: at seventy pitches, Hey, you know what, let's start using
- 26:01Speaker 3: our eye and see what that ball is looking like?
- 26:04Speaker 3: Is he missing armside? The ball four to Julio Rondriguez
- 26:08Speaker 3: was a fastball left in? Does that mean it looks
- 26:11Speaker 3: like you know, his arm slots going down. Pete Walker
- 26:14Speaker 3: has been there for a long time. I know, I
- 26:16Speaker 3: know Schnein's and Pete are in lockstep and they feed
- 26:20Speaker 3: off of each other. So you're constantly getting information that
- 26:25Speaker 3: we don't necessarily have.
- 26:28Speaker 1: That's it this week's Arena Club slab Pack poll. We
- 26:32Speaker 1: opened a ruby. We went big.
- 26:34Speaker 2: They're doing that.
- 26:37Speaker 6: You know what? The nerves got me. I think it
- 26:39Speaker 6: was so exciting because the motion it waits about four
- 26:42Speaker 6: or five seconds for the card to come up card
- 26:43Speaker 6: that I got was over three hundred dollars a prospect
- 26:47Speaker 6: from the Mariners, and for me, I love the card.
- 26:51Speaker 6: I thought it was great. Guess what I sold it back? Yep,
- 26:54Speaker 6: and I got a little more money and now I
- 26:56Speaker 6: can go buy another one. They have to wait a
- 26:57Speaker 6: couple of minutes afterwards. And this is the excitemental whole thing.
- 27:01Speaker 6: Put your money where your mouth is and have fun
- 27:03Speaker 6: with Arena Club.
- 27:04Speaker 1: You can see that big smile on todd Father's face.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Lazarro Montes, who's supposed to be good. He's Baseball America
- 27:09Speaker 1: Top three, he's in the Mariners organization. But Todd Father
- 27:13Speaker 1: sometimes thinks prospects or suspects going back to the well
- 27:17Speaker 1: and we'll see what he gets next time. Use the
- 27:19Speaker 1: code foul foul at Arena club dot com slash foul
- 27:23Speaker 1: if you want to get in on the first slap
- 27:24Speaker 1: pack experience and get twenty percent off or twenty percent
- 27:27Speaker 1: off your first card purchase. Okay, so you guys were
- 27:31Speaker 1: okay with it. At seventy six pitches, top of the
- 27:34Speaker 1: sixth inning to a one one game, he had just.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Crats his point to crats his point. I think he
- 27:40Speaker 2: even talked about that too, Like not every team has
- 27:44Speaker 2: a script, but they have an idea of how they
- 27:46Speaker 2: want to manage these games. And I think they get
- 27:48Speaker 2: to that certain pitch point, like he said, maybe it's
- 27:50Speaker 2: that seventy pitch mark, and then the eyeball test starts
- 27:53Speaker 2: to take over. And I think they did a good
- 27:55Speaker 2: job of that. And you know, as for as much
- 27:57Speaker 2: as he got criticized a couple of years ago with
- 27:59Speaker 2: the Bear Cacuchi situation, like I said, there was moments
- 28:03Speaker 2: in that Yankee series where I'm like, Okay, maybe they
- 28:05Speaker 2: should go get him. They should go oh my god,
- 28:06Speaker 2: they're leaving him at Okay, at work. And then you
- 28:08Speaker 2: think about what they did in Game four. He had
- 28:11Speaker 2: to thread this needle that was so incredibly difficult to do.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Like you said, they don't have the most lockdown bullpen,
- 28:16Speaker 2: but the way they were able to kind of navigate
- 28:19Speaker 2: nine entire innings with just bullpen arms and really maximize
- 28:23Speaker 2: everyone's strengths, it's hard. It's hard to go against what
- 28:26Speaker 2: he was doing. You know, I think, like you said,
- 28:29Speaker 2: they're in lockstep. I don't think it's just a John
- 28:31Speaker 2: Snyder decision. I think Pete Walker has the respect of
- 28:35Speaker 2: that organization, the respect of his starting pitchers in all
- 28:38Speaker 2: of his pictures, and he has the respect of his managers.
- 28:41Speaker 2: So I think that was a collective decision.
- 28:44Speaker 1: By the way, I thought it was funny. Bryce Miller
- 28:46Speaker 1: thought he was going to be removed from the game
- 28:47Speaker 1: in the bottom of the sixth after a fourth pitch
- 28:49Speaker 1: to outwalk to Addison Barger, and they were money. Fox
- 28:53Speaker 1: was on it. He was like, no, no, no, no,
- 28:56Speaker 1: it's Pete Wildworth. Okay, I can talk him into staying
- 28:58Speaker 1: in the game. It was great, and then he got
- 29:00Speaker 1: one more fly ball out and then they moved on.
- 29:02Speaker 1: So I know you appreciate that. Crats we don't. We
- 29:04Speaker 1: don't catch that often. Like it was very it was
- 29:07Speaker 1: very genuine and wholesome, where it's just like no, no, no,
- 29:10Speaker 1: I'm still feeling good.
- 29:13Speaker 3: But what did he just do? He just walked a
- 29:15Speaker 3: guy on four pitches, Like he's sitting there going I
- 29:19Speaker 3: forget who he walked, but he's sitting there.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Like no, no, no, no, no, Barger.
- 29:22Speaker 3: I'm good. I'm good. Like Barger's Barger's looking to swing.
- 29:26Speaker 3: If you walk anybody on this team and four pitches
- 29:28Speaker 3: is probably Vladdie. But everybody else they got a bat,
- 29:34Speaker 3: have have bat, will swing is there is their motto,
- 29:37Speaker 3: and you know, so he knows, he knows. Also he
- 29:41Speaker 3: can't let Barger beat him. So there's times when the
- 29:44Speaker 3: pitcher and the catcher, But in this case, the pitcher's like,
- 29:48Speaker 3: it's okay if this guy doesn't get a pitch to hit,
- 29:53Speaker 3: because I know I can get the next guy who's
- 29:54Speaker 3: a righty up. You know. So it's it's one of
- 29:56Speaker 3: those things that on the field, you always think you're
- 30:01Speaker 3: going to get the next out. In the dugout, you
- 30:04Speaker 3: got to know these guys and you're you're one hundred
- 30:07Speaker 3: and seventy games into the season now, so you better
- 30:11Speaker 3: understand exactly what everybody's putting out on each given night.
- 30:15Speaker 1: KP, Well, I have two for you. I'll see if
- 30:18Speaker 1: I can get at least one, maybe the second one
- 30:20Speaker 1: in there roof open, roof closed? How much do things
- 30:23Speaker 1: change there roof is closed for game one? I'm sure
- 30:26Speaker 1: it's louder when the roof is closed, But how does
- 30:30Speaker 1: the game change with the roof open, specifically in Toronto.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Yeah, typically, obviously a little bit louder with the roof closed.
- 30:37Speaker 2: The ball tends to fly a little bit more with
- 30:40Speaker 2: the roof open, but I do expect a little bit
- 30:43Speaker 2: more of a home field advantage, not from the noise standspoint,
- 30:46Speaker 2: but the time of the game. With the roof being open,
- 30:48Speaker 2: there is some shadows that will affect both the hitters
- 30:52Speaker 2: and also the outfielders. That's something to kind of take
- 30:56Speaker 2: a look at today.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Okay, And last one, how much did you use that
- 31:01Speaker 1: Traject machine and how much does it factory in for
- 31:04Speaker 1: someone like Trey Savage when most of the league hasn't
- 31:07Speaker 1: seen him and the Yankees didn't have that.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Yeah, so Traject is going to love me for this.
- 31:11Speaker 2: It's not gonna help with Tray Savage because his release
- 31:15Speaker 2: point is so unique. Traject is going to have to
- 31:17Speaker 2: make a bigger version of the Traject and it's already
- 31:20Speaker 2: pretty large, but they're gonna have to make a bigger
- 31:22Speaker 2: version for a release point that high. Because I had
- 31:25Speaker 2: talked about this in the pregame show, I used Traject
- 31:28Speaker 2: for like a whole week leading up to facing Garrett
- 31:30Speaker 2: Crochet on Opening Day. I knew I was playing. I
- 31:32Speaker 2: knew I was facing him, and his release point was
- 31:35Speaker 2: so unique that you couldn't get the whole body and
- 31:38Speaker 2: their release point on there. I could still see the stuff,
- 31:41Speaker 2: but there's something to be said about a guy that's
- 31:45Speaker 2: that unique. I need to get in the box and
- 31:47Speaker 2: see him. And I think Seattle is going to be
- 31:49Speaker 2: in a little bit of trouble, much like the Yankees
- 31:52Speaker 2: or facing a guy that they've never seen. You can
- 31:54Speaker 2: do all your homework, you can watch a guy, you
- 31:57Speaker 2: can look at his X and Y spreadsheet, you can
- 31:59Speaker 2: look at all the analytics. You can pick up the
- 32:02Speaker 2: phone and call judge and be like what it looked like,
- 32:03Speaker 2: But until you're standing in that box, you ain't seen
- 32:06Speaker 2: anything like this. Traject would help a little bit in
- 32:09Speaker 2: terms of the movement of the pitches, but finding the
- 32:11Speaker 2: release point and stuff is going to be very challenging
- 32:13Speaker 2: for these guys.
- 32:15Speaker 1: That is the analysis right there.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Traject is going to really struggle because his slider actually
- 32:23Speaker 3: goes backwards. So trajects like put in the computer what
- 32:28Speaker 3: like it's supposed to go slider's supposed to go that way,
- 32:31Speaker 3: and his actually goes like this, like it's almost it's
- 32:35Speaker 3: not even straight down, it's the other way. So traject's
- 32:38Speaker 3: are going to be like, cannot compute more data.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Fake slider, fake slider.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Alert left hand left handed slider.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Yep, but we'll see. Well, I'm excited about it.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 32:50Speaker 1: I could do two hours on this, but we have
- 32:53Speaker 1: two minutes. You guys were talking about how the Angels
- 32:56Speaker 1: need to catch up to the rest of the league
- 32:57Speaker 1: for the past couple decades. How about air conditioning in
- 33:01Speaker 1: the weight room? KP. You were there more recently than Kratz.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Is this true? You say? Kokuchi told Japanese reporters after
- 33:08Speaker 1: his last start he exited due to cramping because the
- 33:10Speaker 1: weight room has no AC. He always has his warm
- 33:12Speaker 1: up drenched in sweat. He wanted them to fix it.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Team Never did.
- 33:18Speaker 2: I believe it. I was there. I mean the AC
- 33:21Speaker 2: was working there, but the inner workings of like the clubhouse,
- 33:24Speaker 2: the weight room, the hot hot tub always had problems too.
- 33:27Speaker 2: They definitely need to already definitely needs to spend some
- 33:32Speaker 2: money and fix that internal workings at the clubhouse, the
- 33:35Speaker 2: weight room, the locker room. I mean, it's a big
- 33:37Speaker 2: selling point to get players, and the Angels is very,
- 33:40Speaker 2: very far behind from a lot of places I've been.
- 33:44Speaker 1: This is a problem for literal decades in our game,
- 33:49Speaker 1: and some fans online like tell him to fix it. No, no, no, no,
- 33:52Speaker 1: it's a multi billion dollar corporation, they fix it. And
- 33:54Speaker 1: also it's air conditioning. He's not asking for a new ballpark. Grats.
- 33:58Speaker 1: We see these stories off with them, and that's why
- 34:01Speaker 1: people are like, what's wrong, I don't get it or whatever.
- 34:03Speaker 1: It's just a seat. No, everybody else gets something, and
- 34:06Speaker 1: then the Angels act like a third world country with
- 34:09Speaker 1: amenities that should be a given. In twenty twenty five.
- 34:13Speaker 5: There is so much.
- 34:15Speaker 3: I was just talking to my kids about the fact
- 34:16Speaker 3: that when I first made it to the big leagues
- 34:19Speaker 3: and I played against the Red Sox, we had to
- 34:20Speaker 3: walk across the street to work out. We had to
- 34:23Speaker 3: walk across Waveland to work out. Like, organizations have been behind,
- 34:29Speaker 3: but you can't continue to be behind if you want
- 34:32Speaker 3: to be a Marquee World Series winning organization. And he
- 34:35Speaker 3: spends on his payroll, maybe not correctly spend on at all.
- 34:42Speaker 1: KP right to you about Trey Savage opening up his
- 34:46Speaker 1: press conference with a statement, he said, it's sad to
- 34:49Speaker 1: see that people close to me are being attacked for
- 34:51Speaker 1: my performances on the fields. He just wanted to stand
- 34:55Speaker 1: out for the online trolls. We're at an all time high.
- 34:58Speaker 1: I mean, it gets worse by the KP. So I
- 35:01Speaker 1: don't really know what you can do besides telling everybody
- 35:04Speaker 1: to just get off social media. And it sucks that
- 35:08Speaker 1: you have to do that, but I don't think it's
- 35:09Speaker 1: going to stop anytime soon. People are ridiculous.
- 35:13Speaker 2: No, it's not going to stop. Good for him, for
- 35:16Speaker 2: you know, understanding, he has a platform, you know, biggest stage,
- 35:20Speaker 2: microphone in front of him to kind of just go
- 35:22Speaker 2: out and address it. Is it going to change anything?
- 35:24Speaker 2: Sadly no, but the worst is still yet to come.
- 35:29Speaker 2: And I hate to say that because he's talking about
- 35:32Speaker 2: the negative effect that his family's received and he threw
- 35:35Speaker 2: well just imagine if he doesn't pitch well, you know
- 35:38Speaker 2: the type of kind of you know, things that are
- 35:40Speaker 2: going to happen to him and his family. But it's
- 35:42Speaker 2: a really sad reality we live in where everyone has
- 35:46Speaker 2: so much access to not only you as the player,
- 35:48Speaker 2: but our information is public. Everyone knows you know, my
- 35:51Speaker 2: wife's name, my kid's name, my family members. They're all
- 35:54Speaker 2: easy to find on social media too. So this is
- 35:57Speaker 2: kind of a learning moment, not only for him but
- 35:59Speaker 2: his entire family as he's entering this arena of you know,
- 36:03Speaker 2: being an elite pitcher and pitching in the major leagues.
- 36:06Speaker 2: This is the negative. This is the negative effect of
- 36:09Speaker 2: being a major league baseball player. Ninety nine percent of
- 36:11Speaker 2: it's great. This is the one percent that you just
- 36:13Speaker 2: kind of have to deal with not only you, but
- 36:15Speaker 2: your family and your loved ones.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Have you guys been seeing Pat Murphy really throughout the
- 36:20Speaker 1: entire postseason put on a show with his quotes, like
- 36:22Speaker 1: he's quoting Shakespeare also KP. He does this thing where
- 36:27Speaker 1: he has anyone new to the media conference, the press
- 36:31Speaker 1: conference introduced themselves. So like a day or two ago,
- 36:34Speaker 1: he had the Japanese media do it for the first
- 36:36Speaker 1: time and there since there's so many of them for
- 36:39Speaker 1: more for the Dodger side, so we had twenty five
- 36:41Speaker 1: Japanese reporters stand up and introduce themselves. So people say,
- 36:45Speaker 1: when Pat Murphy comes in for his daily chat with
- 36:48Speaker 1: the press, brace yourselves. It's going to be a while.
- 36:52Speaker 2: I love it. I mean, he waited a lifetime to
- 36:54Speaker 2: be a manager. He's a very successful manager. He's authentic,
- 36:58Speaker 2: he makes it fun. I got out of him pulling
- 37:01Speaker 2: out his his file of papers against all the matchup
- 37:05Speaker 2: against the Dodgers, and he was just kind of reading
- 37:07Speaker 2: out random lineups and having the media members guess what
- 37:10Speaker 2: year it was from. But I love that he's authentic,
- 37:12Speaker 2: he's himself, he's real, he's fun. You know. Sometimes you
- 37:17Speaker 2: and I'm experiencing it for the first time as a
- 37:20Speaker 2: media member, But I go into those media rooms and
- 37:22Speaker 2: it always feels kind of stuffy, and everyone's kind of
- 37:25Speaker 2: walking on eggs shells. No one wants to ask an
- 37:27Speaker 2: embarrassing question. The answers you're getting, typically from the players
- 37:31Speaker 2: are very buttoned up. So he just makes it fun.
- 37:36Speaker 1: This is for everyone listening right now. What are you
- 37:39Speaker 1: wearing right now? And why isn't it me on Deese Kraft.
- 37:43Speaker 1: It is time for everyone to upgrade and get that
- 37:46Speaker 1: super soft micro Modal glory so good that you don't
- 37:51Speaker 1: want to take it off.
- 37:53Speaker 3: The reason I'm stone facing you is because that's how
- 37:57Speaker 3: soft they are. It's ridiculous, Like I feel, I don't
- 38:00Speaker 3: even understand what kind of material it is. It's got
- 38:02Speaker 3: to be something space age for your butt.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Signature super Soft micro Modal fabric, breathable, stretchy, unbelievably cozy,
- 38:13Speaker 1: and now you can even get glow in the Dark
- 38:16Speaker 1: part of the Halloween line. Right now as a listener
- 38:18Speaker 1: of FT, you can get cozy and spooky for less
- 38:21Speaker 1: with deals up to fifty percent off at meundies dot com.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Slash foul enter promo code foul. That's meundies dot com
- 38:28Speaker 1: slash foul promo code foul for up to fifty percent
- 38:33Speaker 1: off me Undie's comfort that's made for fall. Let us
- 38:47Speaker 1: hit our NLCS preview. It's the Brewers matching up with
- 38:51Speaker 1: the Dodgers. There is a massive payroll disparity. You can
- 38:54Speaker 1: do all kinds of stats to show the differences between
- 38:57Speaker 1: these two teams. Blake Snell alone is making more than
- 39:01Speaker 1: the rest of their rotation. So Kratz, I'll start with this.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Blake Snell, when asked about the Brewers, said quote, I'm
- 39:08Speaker 1: not falling for the average Joe's They're not They got
- 39:12Speaker 1: the best record in baseball. They're a really good team.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Do you like this answer. It's almost like reversing the
- 39:20Speaker 1: psychology back, like we hear your underdog story and we
- 39:24Speaker 1: don't buy it. We are treating you like a real threat.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's how baseball players think. Nobody goes into
- 39:31Speaker 3: a series and is like, oh man, these guys, how
- 39:35Speaker 3: could they all have been dfaed in their entire bullpen?
- 39:39Speaker 3: Like save it. It's like it's like the whole underdog story,
- 39:43Speaker 3: like if you promote it as a team, like yeah,
- 39:45Speaker 3: we're just underdog. We just we've never had any breaks.
- 39:49Speaker 3: It's like, wait a minute, Like there's a bunch of
- 39:51Speaker 3: like first rounders on this team. There's a bunch of
- 39:54Speaker 3: dudes that are really good. Freddy Peralt is probably gonna
- 39:57Speaker 3: be top three, if not definitely the top five, and
- 40:01Speaker 3: the Cy Young voting like they're a good team. They
- 40:03Speaker 3: had the most wins. The Dodgers played the exact same
- 40:07Speaker 3: teams that they played now, not as many in the Central,
- 40:10Speaker 3: but they played the exact same teams and they did
- 40:12Speaker 3: not have a better record than the Brewers. So like
- 40:15Speaker 3: the underdog story, the average Joe's calls himself the above
- 40:20Speaker 3: average Joe's, I think is what Pat Murphy called them.
- 40:23Speaker 3: But it's that like you can't as a as a opponent,
- 40:28Speaker 3: No you're not, You're not falling for that. The Okie Doke.
- 40:34Speaker 1: And the mind stars one oh four KP that doesn't
- 40:36Speaker 1: sound like an average joe to me.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Apparently gets I want to try to make a try.
- 40:41Speaker 2: I want to try to make a very like a
- 40:43Speaker 2: sloppy sentence here, because that's what it feels like. The
- 40:45Speaker 2: underdog's the favorite, the favorites, the underdog, the the the
- 40:49Speaker 2: Joe's versus the pro like who even knows. It's just
- 40:52Speaker 2: it's a fun storyline because maybe the betting favorite is
- 40:56Speaker 2: maybe the Dodgers, but the other team at the best record,
- 40:58Speaker 2: they're calling themselves the average Joe's. The Dodgers are the
- 41:00Speaker 2: super team, but you know they're playing on the road.
- 41:03Speaker 2: It just makes for great theater, But none of the
- 41:05Speaker 2: players are really buying into it, because when the first
- 41:07Speaker 2: pitch happens, they're just trying to beat each other up.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Here's what stands out to me, Kratz. These two teams
- 41:14Speaker 1: are incredibly different in every way. It's not just that
- 41:20Speaker 1: the Dodgers spend a ton and the Brewers obviously don't.
- 41:23Speaker 1: They're the smallest TV market in the sport. The Brewers
- 41:27Speaker 1: make more contact, the Dodgers have more pop. The Dodgers
- 41:31Speaker 1: have the traditional starting rotation lined up like this. The
- 41:35Speaker 1: Brewers were going bullpen game. In Game two, you'll see
- 41:38Speaker 1: bullpen games, I'm sure plenty in this series. They're going
- 41:41Speaker 1: to do that all the way until they get knocked out.
- 41:44Speaker 1: I mean, I would say the traditional relievers setup for
- 41:47Speaker 1: the Brewers is in better shape than the Dodgers. The
- 41:50Speaker 1: Dodgers have had to get creative so far in this
- 41:53Speaker 1: postseason and probably will have to continue to do so.
- 41:56Speaker 1: There are countless differences. These two teams look nothing alike.
- 42:00Speaker 3: So why are we even playing the game? Why don't
- 42:02Speaker 3: we just have it? Why don't we have a salary
- 42:05Speaker 3: cap that will just allow everybody to spend the same
- 42:08Speaker 3: amount so that all the teams can look exactly the same. No, No,
- 42:15Speaker 3: you build your team differently. I'm sure there are things
- 42:19Speaker 3: or players that the Dodgers be Like, we would love
- 42:23Speaker 3: to have a young Jackson Curio in our outfield. We
- 42:26Speaker 3: would love to not have to spend on this guy
- 42:28Speaker 3: because we could have that guy. Like this is the
- 42:31Speaker 3: name of the game, Like you both made it to
- 42:33Speaker 3: this point. One team that is the underdog, that is
- 42:37Speaker 3: the that is the not the betting money, is the
- 42:43Speaker 3: team that won more games. So if you're the Brewers,
- 42:46Speaker 3: you can't say, wow, we're just neat neat grand happy
- 42:49Speaker 3: for being here. And if you're the if you're the Dodgers,
- 42:52Speaker 3: you can't say, oh man, we're gonna walk all over
- 42:55Speaker 3: these nerves because they have no shot because their TV
- 42:58Speaker 3: market is smaller. No, it's about who comes out executes
- 43:02Speaker 3: in each situation will move on. Whoever wins four games
- 43:07Speaker 3: before the other one does will move on. And it's
- 43:09Speaker 3: going to be about execution, pitchers making their pitches, not
- 43:12Speaker 3: about the size of their wallets.
- 43:15Speaker 1: I mean, did you see the regular season series? And
- 43:18Speaker 1: I know it's not the biggest factor in the world,
- 43:20Speaker 1: but the Brewers took all six games.
- 43:24Speaker 2: No, I mean, I think it's real. I mean, I
- 43:25Speaker 2: know the playoffs and the regular season are different, but
- 43:28Speaker 2: when you are quote unquote this underdog and you're going
- 43:32Speaker 2: up against the big bad wolf, you've got to have
- 43:34Speaker 2: this internal belief that you can beat the team, and
- 43:37Speaker 2: the fact that you swept them tells you that regardless
- 43:40Speaker 2: of what anyone else thinks about us outside of this room,
- 43:44Speaker 2: we know and we've proved that we could beat them,
- 43:46Speaker 2: and we actually haven't even lost to them this year,
- 43:48Speaker 2: So they do believe that they are the better team
- 43:51Speaker 2: going in. They can play the media game, the narrative
- 43:54Speaker 2: and all this stuff, but inside those clubhouse walls, there's
- 43:57Speaker 2: not a single person that does not believe that the
- 43:59Speaker 2: Brewers are better than Dodgers, and they proved it in
- 44:02Speaker 2: the regular season. But that being said, you throw all
- 44:05Speaker 2: that out the window. It's the playoffs. You don't accidentally
- 44:08Speaker 2: wake up in the AL or NLCS. Both of these
- 44:11Speaker 2: teams deserve to be here. And like Cratty said, you know,
- 44:15Speaker 2: if you wanted to build every team the same, put
- 44:17Speaker 2: a salary cap in if you thought something would happen,
- 44:20Speaker 2: play the game in a simulator. But that's not how
- 44:22Speaker 2: baseball works. We're going to find out here at a
- 44:25Speaker 2: few short hours. Who's going to be a better team,
- 44:29Speaker 2: who's going to win a series?
- 44:30Speaker 1: Yep, Okay, let's get to some decision making in this series.
- 44:34Speaker 1: I mean with the Brewers, it's a cavalcade of how
- 44:37Speaker 1: they're lining up pitching. It's almost too complicated to get
- 44:40Speaker 1: into with just a few minutes to go. I think
- 44:43Speaker 1: the Dodgers side is simpler. And we did get news,
- 44:45Speaker 1: of course that Snell starting Game one, Yamamotos starting Game two.
- 44:49Speaker 1: They wouldn't commit to when Otani would pitch in this series,
- 44:52Speaker 1: but they did say at some point he's going to
- 44:54Speaker 1: pitch in this series. Dave Roberts was asked if offense
- 44:57Speaker 1: from Shohay in the last round was a concerned Remember
- 45:00Speaker 1: the first time show he is ever pitching in a
- 45:02Speaker 1: postseason and it hasn't affected him often in the past
- 45:06Speaker 1: in the regular season. But this is a different battle
- 45:09Speaker 1: when we're talking about October baseball. They pointed more to
- 45:13Speaker 1: the fact that they would have Stellan Yamamoto lined up
- 45:15Speaker 1: normally and then later on in the series as well.
- 45:18Speaker 1: It sounds like maybe Otani only gets one start in
- 45:21Speaker 1: a best of seven kp Do you like the way
- 45:23Speaker 1: that this is lining up for the Dodgers.
- 45:26Speaker 2: Once again, every roster is created differently, but the luxury
- 45:29Speaker 2: the Dodgers have is they have an abundance of starting pitching.
- 45:32Speaker 2: This is what makes sense for them. It makes a
- 45:35Speaker 2: lot of sense too because show, hey, win producing is
- 45:39Speaker 2: their best hitter in their lineup, and if you can
- 45:41Speaker 2: kind of take that little extra stress of trying to
- 45:44Speaker 2: get you know, eighteen outs or twenty one outside of
- 45:47Speaker 2: the game and just let them focus on hitting, and
- 45:49Speaker 2: you have two legitimate aces and maybe a third in
- 45:52Speaker 2: glass that who can pitch even before him. You know,
- 45:55Speaker 2: that's the way their roster's constructed. They have the ability
- 45:57Speaker 2: to do it, so go ahead and do it.
- 46:00Speaker 3: This was the only picture that the Phillies didn't take
- 46:03Speaker 3: the lead against, So why not? Why is he not
- 46:08Speaker 3: pitching if it's not about his hitting? Don't you want
- 46:11Speaker 3: the best pictures and the best hitters out there. I
- 46:14Speaker 3: have a hard time believing Dave Roberts that it wasn't
- 46:17Speaker 3: about his hitting, because he's never exerted that much effort
- 46:22Speaker 3: in a postseason game. Pictures will tell you you feel
- 46:25Speaker 3: different after throwing a postseason game, and this guy's rehabbed
- 46:29Speaker 3: to get to this point, and maybe physically he didn't
- 46:33Speaker 3: bounce bounce back as much, or maybe the Phillies just
- 46:36Speaker 3: didn't let him get any hits. But to me, it's
- 46:39Speaker 3: indicative of what they think, who they think their best
- 46:41Speaker 3: pictures are, because at this point it's just about who
- 46:44Speaker 3: your best pictures are. So they think Blake Snell and
- 46:47Speaker 3: Yamamoto will give them the best chance to come back
- 46:51Speaker 3: in a seven game series, because that was one of
- 46:53Speaker 3: the issues that I thought Yamamoto might need some extra rest,
- 46:57Speaker 3: he might need that extra extra rest. So they just
- 47:00Speaker 3: think he's their best. He's their best pitcher, and I
- 47:03Speaker 3: think you hold show hey out. He starts Game one
- 47:07Speaker 3: in the World Series if they make it okay.
- 47:09Speaker 2: So you think there's some comfort too of him, you know,
- 47:12Speaker 2: having to pitch and hit at home, like it's a
- 47:14Speaker 2: better routine for him. Maybe he comes out of the bullpen,
- 47:16Speaker 2: he has a chance to go on the mound hit
- 47:18Speaker 2: as opposed to maybe throw his bullpen a little bit earlier.
- 47:21Speaker 2: He has to lead off the game. There's just a
- 47:23Speaker 2: familiarity with him doing at home that also plays a factor.
- 47:26Speaker 2: They might not come out and admit it, but it
- 47:29Speaker 2: is real.
- 47:41Speaker 1: Let's slap and we will point out that Anthony Santander
- 47:45Speaker 1: is out of the lineup for Game two for Toronto.
- 47:48Speaker 1: He is dealing with back tightness KP. We also learned
- 47:53Speaker 1: earlier today that Nathan Lucas should be okay as he
- 47:57Speaker 1: dealt with that tough h little foul tip off the knee.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Kratz and me last night were like, I hope that's
- 48:03Speaker 1: not a Christian yell. It's knee cap situation. It wasn't
- 48:05Speaker 1: no fracture there. But thoughts on this change.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I was trying to look and see who they
- 48:11Speaker 2: replaced him with. I was seeing if Nathan Lucas was
- 48:14Speaker 2: in there. It looks like he's BA second. The obvious
- 48:17Speaker 2: choice would be Miles Straw, but that also kind of
- 48:20Speaker 2: limits what they like to do if Nathan Lucas's knee
- 48:23Speaker 2: kind of flares up on him. So it's definitely a
- 48:26Speaker 2: story to watch. I have my thoughts about the back thing.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Hopefully it's something that's not serious, but it is the playoffs.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Got to find a way to get out there for
- 48:35Speaker 2: your team, especially knowing what Nathan Lucas went through yesterday.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Yeah, weird year for Santander. I mean he missed what
- 48:44Speaker 1: three months this year?
- 48:47Speaker 2: Yeah, around that point. Oh, here's the lineup. No, you
- 48:51Speaker 2: haven't seen that.
- 48:54Speaker 1: No lineup? Or yes, lineup.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Oh David Schneider. David Schneider's in there. So that still
- 48:59Speaker 2: gives him the flexibility of having a Milestraw come off
- 49:02Speaker 2: the bench. But yeah, David Schneider's in there, hitting eighth.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Okay, So there's a change for Toronto. Yep, crats hat.
- 49:15Speaker 3: I hope there's other teams that are out of it
- 49:17Speaker 3: right now that really get to watch these posts. This postseason.
- 49:20Speaker 3: I'm not saying you have to have like a rooting interest,
- 49:23Speaker 3: but the A's have a good core of players. The
- 49:29Speaker 3: organization needs to push a little bit, like let's let's go.
- 49:32Speaker 3: Just be reminded, Just be reminded. I know you're on
- 49:35Speaker 3: vacation right now, but you don't want to be on vacation.
- 49:39Speaker 2: We got on this one right here.
- 49:41Speaker 1: What do you got?
- 49:41Speaker 2: Can we see the side? Wait, it's this side right here?
- 49:46Speaker 3: Oh wow?
- 49:49Speaker 2: The future of baseball in Utah.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, they're getting a team. In my mind is
- 49:55Speaker 1: that's leading the charge.
- 49:58Speaker 2: There for the the minor league Ballpark's incredible that plays is.
- 50:06Speaker 1: BETMGM. Players can get an MLB postseason odds boost token.
- 50:12Speaker 1: Use that wager, activate it with your bet slit, and
- 50:16Speaker 1: if you come through, you get extra winnings. Gambling problem
- 50:20Speaker 1: or concern called one hundred gambler. Good luck on your
- 50:23Speaker 1: picks tonight. We've got two games to choose from.
