- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Hello, fellow sojourners.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Dave Leighton, and welcome to Travel with a Purpose, a podcast designed to keep Sojourners and friends informed, entertained, and inspired.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: In today's episode, we join Earl and Pearl as Earl deals with a problem at the RV.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Well, as the day began, Earl had a problem.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Well, technically the RV had a problem.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: A mysterious critter had apparently decided the wiring under the motor home tasted better than anything found in nature.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Earl noticed it when a dashboard warning light flickered on and off like it was sending Morse code.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: It can't be.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Something's chewing on my wires, Earl said.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Jay nodded.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Probably a squirrel, a chickmunk, a mouse, or something similar.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Earl folded his arms.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: I've got a solution.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Those words should have warned everyone.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: A trip to the farm supply store produced a can of industrial strength critter repellent.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: The label promised to discourage rodents, squirrels, rabbits, and apparently any living thing possessing a nose.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Earl read the instructions.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Then he read the testimonials.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Then he read them again.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: This stuff must really work, he said.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Earl glanced at the warning label.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: It says use sparingly.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Earl smiled.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Well, you know my philosophy.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: If a little is good, then more must be even better.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Pearl just rolled her eyes.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: The next morning, Earl crawled under the RV and began spraying.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And spraying and spraying.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: By the time he finished the entire engine compartment smelled like a combination of rotten onions, spoiled garlic, old gem sock, and something that had lost a fight with a skunk.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Earl admired his work.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: That critter won't be back.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: He closed the compartment and climbed inside.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: About ten minutes later he was sitting in his recliner when he began to notice a faint odor.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Five minutes after that it was stronger.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Ten minutes after that, it had fully invaded the living area.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Well Pearl walked in about that time.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: She had been out grocery shopping.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: She stopped, she sniffed, and she looked around suspiciously.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Then she looked at Earl.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: What happened?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Earl shrugged.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Pearl pointed around and looked at the air.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: The RV smells like a skunk opened a garlic factory.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Well, I sprayed the critter repellent.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: How much?
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Earl thought carefully.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: The amount required.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Pearl narrowed her eyes.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: That wasn't the question.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Miss Gypsy, about that time, emerged from beneath the dinette.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: She froze.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Her ears flattened.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: She sniffed once.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: She sniffed twice.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Then she immediately crawled back under the table.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Pearl laughed.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Miss Gypsy looks ready to file a change of address form.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Earl shook his head.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: She's just overreacting.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Miss Gypsy responded by glaring at him in a way that only cats can.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Myles, their little white poodle, wandered through the RV.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: He sniffed the air.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: He sniffed the floor.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: He sniffed Earl, and then he sniffed himself.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: His expression seemed to say I don't know what happened, but somehow I think Earl caused it.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Myles finally sat in the middle of the floor looking completely confused.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: The smell grew stronger throughout the afternoon.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Apparently Earl's generous application had seeped through every opening and vent imaginable.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Even worse, the air conditioner was helping distribute it equally throughout the RV.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Pearl opened windows, she turned on fans, s she lit a scented candle.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: The candle surrendered after about fifteen minutes.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Nothing helped.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Well that evening their neighbors stopped by.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: David Little climbed the RV steps and immediately stopped.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Phew, he said.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Behind him Sheila covered her nose.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: She looked at Earl and said, What died?
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Nothing died, Earl said proudly.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: I'm preventing wire damage.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Sheila nodded.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Well, judging by the smell, you also prevented human inhabitation.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Earl laughed so hard she nearly spilled her teeth.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: The next morning the odor had improved slightly, very slightly.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Miss Gypsy was finally willing to come from under the table for short visits.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Myles had stopped investigating and simply accepted that reality was no longer making sense.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Earl sat across from Earl drinking coffee.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: So what have we learned?
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Earl thought for a moment.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: When the directions say you sparingly, maybe there's a reason.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Earl smiled.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Progress, she said.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Friends, that reminds me of Proverbs fourteen and fifteen.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: It says The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Earl discovered that solving one problem can create another if we rush ahead without carefully considering the results.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Wisdom often means taking an extra moment to think through the consequences before grabbing the spray can.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Sometimes a little is enough, and sometimes extra becomes a story everyone remembers for years.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: As Earl learned, a little critter spray keeps the mice away.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: A whole can can keep everybody away.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Well, thanks for listening to this podcast.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I invite you to subscribe and share it with others.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Dave Leighton.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And remember we glorify God as together we travel with a purpose.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Happy sojourning.
