- 4:08Speaker 6: I am blessed in highly favored.
- 4:10Speaker 2: That's the only way to be. It's the only way
- 4:12Speaker 2: to be. I want to start off by saying happy
- 4:15Speaker 2: belated birthday.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I don't happy belated wow. So you know I can't
- 4:26Speaker 2: help but compliment you on your beautiful name, honor. Your
- 4:29Speaker 2: name stands out. It is so unique to me. It's smooth,
- 4:35Speaker 2: some of my strength, change and balance, and it's what
- 4:41Speaker 2: is the meaning of your name?
- 4:44Speaker 6: Okay. Growing up and I'm from Michigan, everyone teased me
- 4:49Speaker 6: horribly because I'm so dark, and I used to cry
- 4:53Speaker 6: all the time and I would say they teasing me.
- 4:56Speaker 6: Everybody's calling me black. And my grandmother, who was the
- 5:01Speaker 6: most important person to me, she took me to a
- 5:05Speaker 6: jewelry store and she showed me all of these beautiful
- 5:08Speaker 6: pieces of jewely with the black stone. And I said, Mama,
- 5:11Speaker 6: what is that? She said, that stone is called in onyx.
- 5:15Speaker 6: And you're as precious to me as that jury will
- 5:19Speaker 6: be to the people who buy it. And I've been
- 5:21Speaker 6: called on ever since. But it's also a big name
- 5:27Speaker 6: for me.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Oh wow, Well, Chenette says, happy belated birthday.
- 5:33Speaker 6: Well, thank you.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Then you said that day because you because your skin
- 5:40Speaker 2: tone is rich. Not saying it's dark, it's rich. It's rich.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And look, that's my first name, so it doesn't matter
- 5:50Speaker 2: to me. It's rich. And you have so many people
- 5:54Speaker 2: nowadays are saying that they want a richer complexion. You
- 5:59Speaker 2: know you can't. You can can't buy that complexion. You
- 6:02Speaker 2: can't ten that complexion now, so be proud with that complexion.
- 6:08Speaker 2: And you just let everybody know you can't buy it
- 6:11Speaker 2: and you can't ten it. Munch of people sit on
- 6:13Speaker 2: the beach. They cannot buy a ten it, they can't
- 6:16Speaker 2: do anything with it. So be proud of that complexion. Okay,
- 6:20Speaker 2: And your grandma was right. Okay, your story is essential
- 6:25Speaker 2: to COVID the pandemic. That's the book that you've written.
- 6:28Speaker 2: What inspired you to write about the pandemic.
- 6:32Speaker 6: Well, I contracted COVID nineteen back in April of twenty twenty.
- 6:40Speaker 6: I was engaged at the time, so when I caught COVID,
- 6:45Speaker 6: I went in the hospital and I stayed eight days. Well,
- 6:48Speaker 6: ma fiance caught it as well, and he stayed twenty
- 6:52Speaker 6: three days. And when I came home, we were living.
- 6:58Speaker 6: We were engaged, but we were in his town home
- 7:01Speaker 6: and everyone had so many questions because COVID had just
- 7:05Speaker 6: hit the scene. So people kept asking me. I was like,
- 7:08Speaker 6: you know what, let me write this book so people
- 7:11Speaker 6: can stop asking me about COVID, how how it feels,
- 7:17Speaker 6: how I dealt with it, you know, how did I
- 7:19Speaker 6: deal with it with my fiance catching it as well?
- 7:24Speaker 6: But people asked you. You don't believe You couldn't believe
- 7:27Speaker 6: how many questions people asked the two of us actually
- 7:31Speaker 6: about it.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I asked you more questions than they probably asked the doctor. Yeah,
- 7:35Speaker 2: you know, that was a time that I don't think
- 7:38Speaker 2: many many people are going to forget. Not in my lifetime.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I'll never forget it. No, everything that you had to
- 7:45Speaker 2: go through and being careful, and it was an experience.
- 7:49Speaker 2: It was. It was a heck of an experience.
- 7:52Speaker 6: It was.
- 7:52Speaker 2: It was unbelievable. I thought that I was being careful,
- 7:55Speaker 2: but I wound up catching it and in the house
- 7:58Speaker 2: of my mom, my grandkids, my children, and having to
- 8:01Speaker 2: say isolated in the bedroom and too afraid that somebody
- 8:05Speaker 2: else was going to catch it. So I stayed in
- 8:07Speaker 2: my bedroom and I felt like I was in prison
- 8:09Speaker 2: with them sliding me food. But I was like there,
- 8:12Speaker 2: I said, and then I'm gonna put it in the
- 8:13Speaker 2: bag and vented off in the bathroom under some real
- 8:16Speaker 2: hot water, and you know, send me back to you.
- 8:18Speaker 2: We tried everything because I just was so afraid, you know,
- 8:22Speaker 2: I mean I would.
- 8:22Speaker 6: Want to do time. Everyone was afraid. It was a
- 8:26Speaker 6: scary time, even in the hospital, like when I went
- 8:30Speaker 6: I'm going to tell you when I first got sick,
- 8:32Speaker 6: I was at work and I called my fiance. I said,
- 8:35Speaker 6: I don't feel good. He said, you know what, I
- 8:37Speaker 6: want you to come to my house so I can
- 8:38Speaker 6: take care of you. So I went to his house
- 8:41Speaker 6: and I did for one day. I just got sicker
- 8:44Speaker 6: and sicker, and he was trying to take care of me.
- 8:47Speaker 6: But all of a sudden he started to cough too,
- 8:49Speaker 6: so we didn't know what was going on. And then
- 8:52Speaker 6: I'll never forget. I wanted some fish sticks and I
- 8:56Speaker 6: and his townhouse was you know, downstairs and upstairs, so
- 9:00Speaker 6: I crawled down to the kitchen. I only put seven
- 9:03Speaker 6: fish sticks in the oven. After I got those fish sticks,
- 9:07Speaker 6: I was trying to get back up the stairs and
- 9:09Speaker 6: I just laid on the steps. I have never been
- 9:12Speaker 6: so exhausted. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't even smell the
- 9:16Speaker 6: fis sticks. And I was so sick, and he was
- 9:20Speaker 6: sick as well, So I was like, I need to
- 9:22Speaker 6: go to the hospital. At the time though people couldn't.
- 9:25Speaker 6: You couldn't have visitors. Even in the er, nobody could
- 9:28Speaker 6: go with you. And he was sick anyway, So I
- 9:30Speaker 6: actually called an uber to get me to the hospital,
- 9:35Speaker 6: to the er, and when the guy came, I fell
- 9:38Speaker 6: into his car and he said, Oh, I hope you
- 9:41Speaker 6: don't have that stuff that everybody's talking about.
- 9:44Speaker 2: But I did.
- 9:46Speaker 6: And when you get admitted to the hospital, you know
- 9:49Speaker 6: they back then, they they pushed your bed through the
- 9:54Speaker 6: hospital wing right, and then there's another door, like a
- 9:57Speaker 6: smaller door. You actually go through there because they said
- 10:01Speaker 6: the ventilation the air went outside instead of back in
- 10:04Speaker 6: the hospital. So the nurses only came around once today.
- 10:09Speaker 6: The doctors were like, we don't know what this is.
- 10:13Speaker 6: We have no idea. If you want me to give
- 10:15Speaker 6: you something for your cop I will. If you want
- 10:17Speaker 6: me to give you something for your feever, I will.
- 10:19Speaker 6: If your chest hurts, I'll give you something for pain.
- 10:21Speaker 6: I'll make sure you have enough fluis he said. But
- 10:23Speaker 6: the doctor was like, but I don't know what this is.
- 10:25Speaker 6: I don't know how to cure it. All I can
- 10:27Speaker 6: tell you is that you have the coronavirus. And I
- 10:31Speaker 6: don't know what to do about it. That's exactly what
- 10:34Speaker 6: the doctor said to me.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Wow, it was twenty so flip side of that back
- 10:43Speaker 2: in you want the author of the Year for the
- 10:47Speaker 2: pandemic at the Kingdom Image Awards. How amazing was that
- 10:51Speaker 2: suffer from the pandemic for COVID for the pandemic graph.
- 10:58Speaker 6: So first of all, the Kingdom Image Wars is in Ohio,
- 11:03Speaker 6: So I had to get on a plane alight of Ohio.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Now I got married March twentieth, the twenty one, so
- 11:10Speaker 6: I had just got married my husband. He still had
- 11:14Speaker 6: because Keith suffered a lot from catching COVID that first time.
- 11:18Speaker 6: He written, like I said, he was in the hospital
- 11:20Speaker 6: for twenty three days. He had to come home on oxygen.
- 11:23Speaker 6: So just that I went. I had to go alone
- 11:26Speaker 6: the first time. Just getting on a plane, I mean
- 11:30Speaker 6: you had to have you had to have a mask
- 11:32Speaker 6: on then you had I mean it was awful just
- 11:35Speaker 6: flying and getting to the hotel in Ohio. But you
- 11:39Speaker 6: know what, that was the most amazing time I've ever had.
- 11:44Speaker 6: Now I think I'm fifty five, but I promise I
- 11:46Speaker 6: think I'm cute. I do. So I had a hope
- 11:49Speaker 6: a lot of those knowing I had a lot of clothes,
- 11:55Speaker 6: So there are a lot of events. It was so exciting.
- 11:57Speaker 6: There was famous people, and I was just like, you know,
- 12:00Speaker 6: he tried to be real cool about it, but I
- 12:02Speaker 6: was really like, and I was trying. I'm trying to
- 12:06Speaker 6: be cool.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:07Speaker 6: So I met this other couple there and we just
- 12:12Speaker 6: started to hang out because they were writers as well.
- 12:15Speaker 6: So she was, you know, had been there a long time,
- 12:18Speaker 6: I mean writing a long time, and she was really accomplished.
- 12:21Speaker 6: So the night of the awards ceremony, you know, of
- 12:24Speaker 6: course we're sitting there. I'm in the front row, she's
- 12:26Speaker 6: her and her family is behind me. And then they said,
- 12:29Speaker 6: you know, they were like, now for Author of the Year,
- 12:33Speaker 6: and they started saying the nominees and and then she literally,
- 12:38Speaker 6: I mean I could literally see her begin to rise
- 12:40Speaker 6: a little bit. And they were like, and the winner
- 12:42Speaker 6: is and she began to rise. I was like, oh
- 12:47Speaker 6: my god. I didn't know what to do. I had
- 12:49Speaker 6: not planned this speech because I didn't think I was
- 12:53Speaker 6: gonna win, but it was when I didn't know, I
- 12:59Speaker 6: thought she would somebody else's be in I didn't know
- 13:03Speaker 6: writing has I thought it wasn't good enough. I thought,
- 13:05Speaker 6: maybe nobody don't want to hear about that. And you know,
- 13:08Speaker 6: I have always had a really low self esteem, even
- 13:11Speaker 6: though now I try to come out and say, oh
- 13:14Speaker 6: I love everything, but honestly, it's still pretty hard for
- 13:18Speaker 6: me sometimes. And so I thought I'm not gonna win.
- 13:22Speaker 6: It's not good enough. But I did. And it was
- 13:25Speaker 6: amazing just standing on that stage and holding that statue.
- 13:30Speaker 6: And I mean, who I'm just the hole. They were like,
- 13:34Speaker 6: it's famous people around and they wanted to take a
- 13:37Speaker 6: picture with me.
- 13:38Speaker 7: Who am I?
- 13:40Speaker 2: It was just suck it up, suck it in. Just
- 13:45Speaker 2: a field day with it, because it's going to happen again. Yo,
- 13:49Speaker 2: It's going to happen, and it's definitely gonna happen again.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I mean, something is the ABC of writing a workbook
- 13:57Speaker 2: or a guide to the ABC's of writing.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Okay, Actually, what happened a lot of people and this,
- 14:03Speaker 6: and you know what's funny we're talking about that. A
- 14:05Speaker 6: lady came to see me at my job today and said,
- 14:08Speaker 6: I heard you wrote a book. And I have a
- 14:11Speaker 6: grandmother and she's one hundred years old and she's been
- 14:14Speaker 6: working on a book for two years and what is
- 14:17Speaker 6: the next step. And I said, okay, well, is the
- 14:20Speaker 6: book complete? Hasn't been edited? Da She's like, no, she's
- 14:24Speaker 6: just been writing for two years. And I said, it's
- 14:29Speaker 6: not even written yet. You don't even have a book yet.
- 14:31Speaker 6: You just have a lot of I'm sure it'd be
- 14:34Speaker 6: very interesting, you know, but you have a lot of sayings.
- 14:36Speaker 6: And since she's one hundred years old, I'm sure there's
- 14:39Speaker 6: you know. She had a lot to say. But I said, honey,
- 14:42Speaker 6: the first thing you need is a ghostwriter. You guys
- 14:45Speaker 6: need to get her a ghostwriter so that they can
- 14:47Speaker 6: make it into a story. And so she began to
- 14:50Speaker 6: ask me about that, Well, how is it a ghostwriting?
- 14:52Speaker 6: And I said, well, you know, I will tell you
- 14:56Speaker 6: everything there is to know, But I just can't commit
- 14:59Speaker 6: to something like that right now. I have so many
- 15:02Speaker 6: eyes and a fire. I have a full time job.
- 15:05Speaker 6: I have a huge Christmas play coming up December twenty second.
- 15:08Speaker 6: How to talk about that, I have a husband about
- 15:13Speaker 6: I'm really involved in my church. I'm on the praise
- 15:16Speaker 6: scene of my church, I sing. I mean, I just
- 15:19Speaker 6: I was just.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Like, I just seem to be doing it all. You
- 15:22Speaker 2: have a wonder our Well you were saying congratulations and yes, congratulations.
- 15:29Speaker 2: So you talked about so many things that you're doing.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Tell me about the Evidence Theater Production. Is that your
- 15:35Speaker 2: production company? And how do you find projects on filming?
- 15:39Speaker 6: Okay, so this is what happened as far as Evidence
- 15:42Speaker 6: came came to be. There was a lady that goes
- 15:45Speaker 6: to my church and she was like, your name is
- 15:47Speaker 6: not honest. I said it's not. She said, no, your
- 15:51Speaker 6: name is evidence because you are evidence that God is real.
- 15:56Speaker 6: And I was like, well, praise God, you know. And
- 15:59Speaker 6: so that's how I decided to self published and actually
- 16:03Speaker 6: began helping others publish under Evidence. And because I have
- 16:07Speaker 6: written so many plays and put onto a many I said, well,
- 16:09Speaker 6: you know what, let me make this an LLC and
- 16:12Speaker 6: make this Evidence Theater Productions. And I did so, finding
- 16:16Speaker 6: different things and I had somebody else film the last
- 16:20Speaker 6: production that I did, I had another production company film it.
- 16:24Speaker 6: But I'm good. That's something that I'm going to do.
- 16:26Speaker 6: People really reach out to you to do different things.
- 16:30Speaker 6: Yeah they do.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you have someone saying God bless you, so there's
- 16:35Speaker 2: another little man for you. So you you mentioned them
- 16:39Speaker 2: about the filming. So tell me about your next project.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Jesus with with Micah on the Little Donkey.
- 16:44Speaker 6: Okay, it's not Jesus, it's Hey sous, I apologize, that's okay.
- 16:51Speaker 2: It's because this is Spanish, right, yes, Spanish. Oh, okay, okay,
- 16:56Speaker 2: I apologize, Hey.
- 16:57Speaker 6: Sus, that is fine. But this is one thing that
- 17:00Speaker 6: and the reason I came up with. But this play
- 17:03Speaker 6: is now. I usually put on a play called a
- 17:05Speaker 6: ghetto Child's Christmas Tale at Christmas time. People cannot let
- 17:09Speaker 6: me put that down, so I usually do that. Okay,
- 17:14Speaker 6: A ghettle Child's Christmas Tale is instead of it being
- 17:17Speaker 6: marrying Joseph and Bethlehem, it's Mechi and Jojo in downtown Detroit,
- 17:22Speaker 6: singing angels, an angels, spoken word angels, praise dancing. Instead
- 17:27Speaker 6: of three wise men three shepherds, is three Whinos and
- 17:30Speaker 6: three corner boys. So I'm gonna take any of that. Yeah, yeah,
- 17:36Speaker 6: I actually have the DVD on it. Yeah, it is amazing.
- 17:40Speaker 6: But this time I live, like I said, I live
- 17:43Speaker 6: in for a worth. I don't know if I said that,
- 17:45Speaker 6: but I do. I live in for a worth. In
- 17:46Speaker 6: the community that I live in, a lot of people
- 17:49Speaker 6: are saying that no, so many Hispanics are moving in
- 17:53Speaker 6: and we're not good. They're gonna move aside. And and
- 17:57Speaker 6: you know, I was at a community meeting and I said,
- 17:59Speaker 6: you know, here's a couple of things you guys don't know.
- 18:03Speaker 6: First of all, Hispanic people are very religious, just like
- 18:05Speaker 6: African Americans. And the only difference with the two minority
- 18:10Speaker 6: groups is the language. That's the only barrier. And then
- 18:15Speaker 6: they're like no. So I said, you know what, I'm
- 18:16Speaker 6: gonna prove them wrong. So I wrote a Hey sous
- 18:21Speaker 6: aenika sombre in el bollito, and that means everything. Hey
- 18:26Speaker 6: sous and Mika see on the Little Donkey on their
- 18:30Speaker 6: way to Bethlehem. We're gonna see on stage. I have everything,
- 18:35Speaker 6: my English narrator says in English, Carlos is gonna say
- 18:39Speaker 6: in Spanish, I mean it's I have a mariachi band,
- 18:44Speaker 6: I have miniature dancers in English, miniature dancers in Spanish.
- 18:49Speaker 6: I have spoken word in English, spoken word in Spanish.
- 18:52Speaker 6: I have ballet com fluego that's a traditional Hispanic dance.
- 18:58Speaker 6: I have just quite a bit. I have, like seen,
- 19:02Speaker 6: You're just.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Gonna stay there in Texas with that you're not going
- 19:05Speaker 2: to share it on this side of town.
- 19:07Speaker 6: I can't traveling expensive. It is so expensive to do this.
- 19:13Speaker 6: Go fund me, raise the price on the tickets whatever. Okay,
- 19:17Speaker 6: I know that everyone that said, you know, okay, everyone
- 19:21Speaker 6: is set. It's such a release on December twenty second.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Yes, and it's going to be held at the Arlington
- 19:26Speaker 2: Music Hall, and the tickets are available on event bright.
- 19:30Speaker 6: Yes, they're available on events.
- 19:33Speaker 2: I have a relative. I have a relative that lives
- 19:36Speaker 2: in Texas, so I'm hoping that she hears about it
- 19:39Speaker 2: and then she goes to see it. But you really
- 19:42Speaker 2: need to come on this side to share some of
- 19:43Speaker 2: that with us too, because I would love to see that.
- 19:46Speaker 2: But put it on video, sell it that you know,
- 19:50Speaker 2: it is given.
- 19:51Speaker 6: I have an executive staff I always do for every production.
- 19:57Speaker 6: But the things like the headset microphones, Okay, they're so expensive.
- 20:02Speaker 6: You can't afford to own them, so you rent them.
- 20:05Speaker 6: It's very expensive to do that. People that are involved
- 20:08Speaker 6: that are part of my executive staff, they don't think
- 20:11Speaker 6: about little things like that, like what about the ushers
- 20:14Speaker 6: or the fact that you need ushers with flashlights to
- 20:17Speaker 6: assist people to their scenes. Okay, so just the thing.
- 20:21Speaker 6: What about the costumes that need to be purchased, Because
- 20:24Speaker 6: I don't allow my cast to by anything. I buy
- 20:26Speaker 6: all the costumes I buy. I make sure my green
- 20:29Speaker 6: rooms are catered. I just dance moms, which I can't
- 20:34Speaker 6: take anymore. They're special. But I mean every single the music.
- 20:39Speaker 6: I mean down to getting the playbills made. My executive
- 20:43Speaker 6: staff they think they can think about let's rehearse the
- 20:46Speaker 6: people to get them ready, But the little things that
- 20:50Speaker 6: make it stick together they don't think about. So those
- 20:53Speaker 6: are the things that I have to think about. And
- 20:55Speaker 6: it's really hard, it's really expensive, and I do it
- 20:59Speaker 6: my Actually, my husband says, okay, this is the last
- 21:02Speaker 6: time you're doing this play stuff without getting paid. I'm
- 21:04Speaker 6: telling you now because every time I put on a production,
- 21:10Speaker 6: everybody gets paid but me and I always a like
- 21:14Speaker 6: taken everything I have just to put it into there.
- 21:17Speaker 6: Everyone says, oh, I want to support you. I promise you.
- 21:19Speaker 6: They don't or after would I would have so, but
- 21:24Speaker 6: I don't. I don't get mad at anyone for that
- 21:26Speaker 6: because this is my dream. This is my dream. I
- 21:28Speaker 6: do this because I love it. I'm at every rehearsal,
- 21:31Speaker 6: I never let like I have like my dancers rehearsal
- 21:35Speaker 6: over here, my singers rehearsing over here, my person and
- 21:38Speaker 6: I'm the first act. I have them over here, So
- 21:41Speaker 6: nobody sees the vision until December when I put it together.
- 21:45Speaker 6: Then they're like, cause, yeah, I can imagine it is.
- 21:50Speaker 2: I understand you've written eight plays and one of them
- 21:53Speaker 2: is being a mother's prayer. How does it feel to
- 21:56Speaker 2: see your creation a mother's prayer depict it on stage?
- 21:58Speaker 2: Because I've seen it. I've seen it, so I'm going,
- 22:05Speaker 2: how does it feel to see your creation depicted on stage?
- 22:09Speaker 6: I was there like, oh my, The bad thing is
- 22:13Speaker 6: because I can notice, I notice every word that's missed,
- 22:17Speaker 6: every line in the song. So I had to really
- 22:20Speaker 6: pull rein myself in so I not concentrate on that
- 22:24Speaker 6: and to just see that, and it was just so much.
- 22:26Speaker 6: I was so full that night that I I just
- 22:30Speaker 6: couldn't even explain how I felt. And only because I
- 22:33Speaker 6: understand how it feels to pray for a child, you know,
- 22:36Speaker 6: I understood that having an adult, having adult children and them,
- 22:40Speaker 6: you know, they grown, they got their own opinions, their
- 22:42Speaker 6: own minds. But we know, let's say they're walking down
- 22:46Speaker 6: the street. Now we know there's a hole up there.
- 22:48Speaker 6: Now we tell them it's a whole in the middle
- 22:50Speaker 6: of the street, and we want to protect them from that.
- 22:53Speaker 6: But they've fallen into a hole anyway because they want to.
- 22:56Speaker 6: So that's a hard thing to do. And just all
- 23:01Speaker 6: the time knowing that your mother is praying for you, so.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Just well the film. The film highlights the connection between
- 23:10Speaker 2: mother and prayers. Relationships are meaningful and why but before
- 23:16Speaker 2: you addswer that, I want you to do something for me.
- 23:18Speaker 2: The next time you're doing this play give the grandmother
- 23:23Speaker 2: hug for me because she can dance. She was dancing,
- 23:26Speaker 2: she was doing her things. That she was doing her thing.
- 23:32Speaker 2: So I was like, yeah, god, wow, yeah movie when
- 23:38Speaker 2: you couldn't tell, couldn't you could not tell, not at all,
- 23:41Speaker 2: not one bit. I saw it and I was like, wow,
- 23:44Speaker 2: mother's prayer. But how do you do you believe that
- 23:47Speaker 2: a mother daughter's.
- 23:50Speaker 6: I believe that there is no more powerful prayer than
- 23:53Speaker 6: a mother's prayer. I want I want you to think
- 23:57Speaker 6: of about something. For a moment. When a woman is
- 24:01Speaker 6: ready to give birth, she squats down and she's even
- 24:06Speaker 6: if she's if you go way back in history, she's squatty,
- 24:10Speaker 6: she's open, or even if she's like today, she's in
- 24:12Speaker 6: the hospital, land on a bed, she's in such a
- 24:15Speaker 6: position of vulnerability right then when she's giving birth to
- 24:20Speaker 6: that child. That is exactly how I feel about the
- 24:24Speaker 6: prayers for my mother. You can't tell me, I mean,
- 24:27Speaker 6: I don't care if this is a child that you birthed.
- 24:30Speaker 6: I don't care if it's a child that you adopted
- 24:32Speaker 6: that you had that kind of feeling for, because you
- 24:35Speaker 6: know what, in your own mind and in your heart,
- 24:38Speaker 6: you still get into that position of vulnerability when you
- 24:42Speaker 6: are praying for that child, just like when you were
- 24:44Speaker 6: giving birth. You can tell me. I'm telling you, I
- 24:49Speaker 6: don't care if you have, like I said, I have
- 24:52Speaker 6: adult children, and I don't want to see him on
- 24:54Speaker 6: the whole. So I'm praying for mys all the time.
- 24:58Speaker 6: The love that you have for your children scary. Have
- 25:01Speaker 6: you ever watched certain shows when you see a mother
- 25:04Speaker 6: pick up a car because that child is under that car.
- 25:08Speaker 6: I've seen stuff like that. It's because you love that
- 25:15Speaker 6: child so much. And I think about the times that
- 25:18Speaker 6: I've read the Bible, the Holy Bible, Okay, and I
- 25:23Speaker 6: say and I can remember Nico Demus asking Jesus how
- 25:29Speaker 6: can I be born again? And how can a rich
- 25:32Speaker 6: man inenter heaven? You know, I remember those questions. You
- 25:36Speaker 6: know what it says, you have to if you can
- 25:39Speaker 6: be born again fitting through the eye of the leader
- 25:41Speaker 6: your mother is if you's so? That is how much.
- 25:46Speaker 6: That's how we love kids. We we actually take them
- 25:49Speaker 6: into our body and we actually.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Do that, We ave them. Whether they realize it or not.
- 25:58Speaker 6: They may not know, but I promise you we do.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Any mother can tell you that too, We really do.
- 26:05Speaker 6: So how do you.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Balance your work author and playwright and your role as
- 26:12Speaker 2: a wife and mother of five and nine grandchildren? You know?
- 26:19Speaker 2: How do you do all of that and still have
- 26:21Speaker 2: time and look as beautiful as you are? No matter
- 26:24Speaker 2: what anybody else may say.
- 26:27Speaker 6: I my children are adults. My bonus children are adults
- 26:32Speaker 6: as well. Last summer, my husband and I we took
- 26:36Speaker 6: care of my oldest child's youngest two children so that
- 26:40Speaker 6: I was a full time mama grandmother then and I
- 26:44Speaker 6: just wanted that experience. You just because of the love
- 26:49Speaker 6: you have for them. You just do what to do.
- 26:52Speaker 6: You don't have a choice. That is something that has
- 26:54Speaker 6: been upon black women for since the beginning of time.
- 26:58Speaker 6: You do what you have to do.
- 27:00Speaker 2: You don't have a choice. Uh, outside of writing, Outside
- 27:06Speaker 2: of writing all of that, what other things do you
- 27:08Speaker 2: enjoy doing? You do a lot.
- 27:14Speaker 6: I love singing, I love writing. I love my husband.
- 27:18Speaker 2: And I wanted to ask you about your singing because
- 27:21Speaker 2: when I when I was watching the play, so I
- 27:27Speaker 2: got to follow it through the end, and that just
- 27:29Speaker 2: said she throwing her voices. The other person just moving
- 27:32Speaker 2: their mouth and she's really singing. Because I knew you
- 27:34Speaker 2: you was able to sing. But I said I had
- 27:36Speaker 2: to get close. I was going, I say, I was,
- 27:40Speaker 2: I was in it like that was her beautiful voice,
- 27:47Speaker 2: beautiful voice.
- 27:50Speaker 6: It's no, I just I love as much as I'm
- 27:53Speaker 6: an extrovert. People think because I work in the public,
- 27:56Speaker 6: I'm always I'm a toastmaster. So I speak a lot,
- 27:59Speaker 6: I travel a lot, I'm on them in my church
- 28:03Speaker 6: and always in front of people. But you know what, honestly,
- 28:07Speaker 6: I really like times like now when I'm at home
- 28:10Speaker 6: in my house and my husband's in the other room,
- 28:12Speaker 6: I won't even be here. I want to go and
- 28:15Speaker 6: just just be with him. And we watched movies together,
- 28:20Speaker 6: we cook together that I really like that. So that's
- 28:23Speaker 6: how all of that works for me. I can go
- 28:27Speaker 6: out there crazy for other people, but just being with him,
- 28:31Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I'm a homemaker, yeah, being a homemaker. Yeah. So we're
- 28:37Speaker 2: gonna we're gonna go and when we return, we're going
- 28:40Speaker 2: to not only talk with Onyx Rice, but we're going
- 28:44Speaker 2: to talk to Antoinette or am I saying the wrong. No,
- 28:50Speaker 2: we're gonna be talking with Onyx Brace, but we're gonna well,
- 28:53Speaker 2: we're gonna be talking to both and Antoinette.
- 28:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Turn off the legs the candle.
- 29:41Speaker 5: Tonight, a man, amagine, let's take a shower.
- 29:52Speaker 4: Shower together.
- 29:56Speaker 2: I was abandoned you that so wealthave save turn on me, Come.
- 30:29Speaker 6: You, I don't want to give you a special treat.
- 30:32Speaker 2: You're so sweet.
- 30:35Speaker 4: Turn on.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Well we are back with Onyx King, the playwriter, author
- 30:45Speaker 2: and all that. So what is it that Onyx craves?
- 30:52Speaker 2: What is it that you crave?
- 30:53Speaker 7: ICs?
- 30:56Speaker 6: I crave love and peace. Love and peace. I've looked
- 31:09Speaker 6: for that. I found it in Christ and I didn't
- 31:13Speaker 6: know that I didn't have it, but that's what I crave.
- 31:19Speaker 6: I just wanted to be accepted. That's not always happened.
- 31:23Speaker 6: Doesn't always happened.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I don't want it, yeah, but it's there, and it's there.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Just just just open the door a little bit more.
- 31:34Speaker 2: It's it's always been there. It's just that sometimes you
- 31:37Speaker 2: have to just go through battles to understand that why
- 31:40Speaker 2: it's been here all along. So don't crave it anymore
- 31:45Speaker 2: because he's given it to you, and and he's given
- 31:47Speaker 2: it to you, and you can. You can see it
- 31:48Speaker 2: in your work, and you can see it in your smile,
- 31:52Speaker 2: the love, and you can you look peaceful now. I
- 31:54Speaker 2: don't know you on your inside of how you're feeling
- 31:57Speaker 2: for other things, but you peaceful. So I wouldn't worry
- 32:03Speaker 2: about craving anything anymore because it's your, your there, whether
- 32:06Speaker 2: you believe it or not. I feel as though you arrived.
- 32:11Speaker 2: What did it take to produce a play that's now
- 32:14Speaker 2: streaming on YouTube, Amazon and several other platforms.
- 32:19Speaker 7: It is.
- 32:20Speaker 6: It just takes a lot of work. It takes being
- 32:25Speaker 6: very selfless.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Like I said, I give it a lot.
- 32:31Speaker 6: Yeah. My husband says, you don't make any money this
- 32:34Speaker 6: time you're done, because I mean, it costs. It takes
- 32:38Speaker 6: a lot You have to be able to to continue
- 32:43Speaker 6: to go on whether nobody goes with you. You have
- 32:46Speaker 6: to want to go on if nobody goes with you,
- 32:49Speaker 6: if nobody wants to help you, if nobody can see
- 32:53Speaker 6: your vision, if nobody understands you have to be able
- 32:57Speaker 6: to go on to do that.
- 32:59Speaker 2: I want you to know that people are watching. Watch
- 33:05Speaker 2: Somebody sees you. It's just that they're not ready yet
- 33:10Speaker 2: to make that move. But don't stop, because a minute
- 33:13Speaker 2: you stop, somebody's gonna be ready to take your place.
- 33:16Speaker 2: And that's nothing but the devil wanting you to stop. Now,
- 33:18Speaker 2: I understand your husband saying about the money part. Believe it,
- 33:21Speaker 2: that does play a role. He's not the devil part.
- 33:24Speaker 2: But somebody is waiting to take your place, and you
- 33:27Speaker 2: can't afford to let somebody take your place because you're
- 33:29Speaker 2: giving so much of yourself and you're giving so much
- 33:33Speaker 2: place in what you're doing. You know, it's just it's
- 33:37Speaker 2: just amazing. What are some of the challenges that you
- 33:39Speaker 2: face when writing the play.
- 33:42Speaker 6: Playwriting is different from writing a novel. You have to
- 33:45Speaker 6: write a lot of direction, a lot of you know,
- 33:50Speaker 6: this character may say this, or this character is going
- 33:52Speaker 6: to do this, you have to write them and so
- 33:55Speaker 6: that they understand what you're doing. As I said, I
- 33:59Speaker 6: like to have rehearsals for writing my plays. I have
- 34:03Speaker 6: my rehearsals separate. Like you know, i'm working on the music, fine,
- 34:08Speaker 6: I'm doing that. If I'm working on the actress for this,
- 34:11Speaker 6: I'm doing that. If I'm in that way, not only
- 34:15Speaker 6: do I have my either one of my two assistant
- 34:17Speaker 6: producers there, or my choreographer, or my audio person or
- 34:22Speaker 6: my video person or my stage manager. All of these
- 34:25Speaker 6: people play a big part. But I need to always
- 34:28Speaker 6: be there because even though I can't dance at all,
- 34:32Speaker 6: I don't know how to dance, but I need to
- 34:35Speaker 6: be there sometimes one of the actors they may need
- 34:39Speaker 6: a hug, or they may need someone to say, no, baby,
- 34:43Speaker 6: you're doing a good job. You can do this. They
- 34:47Speaker 6: may need any kind of encouragement. And I'm just grateful
- 34:52Speaker 6: that God has put that inside of me. I am
- 34:55Speaker 6: an extreme nurturer. I can do it with anyone that
- 34:59Speaker 6: I need to an adults, you know, and I really
- 35:03Speaker 6: love it. I can't tell you one thing. I love it.
- 35:08Speaker 2: You mentioned in your bio that you're a champion of
- 35:10Speaker 2: women who win against all arts? Are you talking about
- 35:13Speaker 2: the events in your book? Even me? Yes? Yes, women,
- 35:19Speaker 2: what part in your book even me resonates with you
- 35:21Speaker 2: most today?
- 35:27Speaker 6: I would like to say the end because I'm strong
- 35:34Speaker 6: and I'm gonna make it. Whether anyone says you can
- 35:38Speaker 6: do it or you can't. I can be in a
- 35:40Speaker 6: room and everybody else in that room can say.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Who do you think you are?
- 35:44Speaker 7: A girl?
- 35:45Speaker 6: You can't do this? I beg to differ. I can,
- 35:49Speaker 6: and I know that there are several challenges that we face,
- 35:53Speaker 6: and we as women face them more so than men.
- 36:00Speaker 6: And I want to say that because so many of
- 36:02Speaker 6: our men aren't here, and there are a lot of
- 36:05Speaker 6: different reasons that they're not. But we still have to
- 36:08Speaker 6: be a mama. We still got to be a grandmama.
- 36:11Speaker 6: We still got to be a housekeeper, we still got
- 36:13Speaker 6: to be a maid, we still got to be a
- 36:15Speaker 6: counselor still got to be a pastor. It doesn't matter.
- 36:18Speaker 6: We still have to do those things. And women, when
- 36:22Speaker 6: you find a sister that's doing it, please get behind
- 36:26Speaker 6: her and push.
- 36:27Speaker 2: I don't care how you feel, so I'm knocking it down.
- 36:30Speaker 6: Yeah, because you know, women have a lot of women
- 36:34Speaker 6: that I mean, I don't want to make I don't
- 36:35Speaker 6: like to say to speaking and totalities of anything. But
- 36:40Speaker 6: so many women that I have even encountered have crab
- 36:44Speaker 6: like mentalities and they feel like, let me pull you down,
- 36:47Speaker 6: because if I pull you down, it's going to make
- 36:49Speaker 6: me feel better. Well, honey, I'm sorry, but it's not not.
- 36:54Speaker 6: In the end, it's not you're gonna say, look at her,
- 36:56Speaker 6: she thinks she's this. You know how many times I
- 36:59Speaker 6: hear that and I just say shake my head and say,
- 37:03Speaker 6: if they only knew what it took to get here.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh, so much. Yes, yes, they only knew.
- 37:12Speaker 6: You always say oh I can do Oh I would
- 37:14Speaker 6: have did it like this, or I could do it
- 37:16Speaker 6: like this, And you know what, in the there are
- 37:18Speaker 6: times of weakness that I find myself saying this, fine,
- 37:22Speaker 6: just do it no because they can't do it. If
- 37:25Speaker 6: they could, they would have. But they find in me
- 37:29Speaker 6: just saying, well, you can't do this, you can't do that,
- 37:32Speaker 6: and that's awful.
- 37:34Speaker 2: I find some you know, and what you're saying, I
- 37:40Speaker 2: have been told and I don't know what other people
- 37:42Speaker 2: have heard it too, that you know, you think you're
- 37:44Speaker 2: better than this, You think you better than that, and
- 37:46Speaker 2: I just simply say no, I think I'm better than
- 37:48Speaker 2: that situation. So I let them sit with that I'm
- 37:52Speaker 2: better in that situation. I don't know what your situation is,
- 37:54Speaker 2: but I'm better than the situation. I'm not saying I'm
- 37:56Speaker 2: better than you. You're in a situation that I know
- 37:59Speaker 2: that I'm better than that, and you should feel the
- 38:01Speaker 2: same way. But if you don't feel that way, that's
- 38:03Speaker 2: that's not my problem. You know, what is the name
- 38:06Speaker 2: of the play? Which which place reading? Which play you're
- 38:09Speaker 2: talking about? Because she's a playwright, she's writing more than one. Now,
- 38:14Speaker 2: if you talk about my Mother's Prayer, you have to
- 38:16Speaker 2: see that. But she has another one that you have
- 38:19Speaker 2: to see is around Christmas time on event Bright. Let
- 38:23Speaker 2: him know what it is.
- 38:24Speaker 6: Onyx Okay, it's Heyesu's Emika some Break. That's my Christmas
- 38:32Speaker 6: play from this year. I also have BBDs.
- 38:35Speaker 2: You gotta go see the prayer. Yeah, I'm telling the
- 38:39Speaker 2: Mother's Prayer. You gotta see that. You really really have
- 38:42Speaker 2: to see that. I'm just in lo i'manna see it
- 38:44Speaker 2: again tonight. So, oh my goodness, I'm sorry. I want
- 38:47Speaker 2: to see it.
- 38:48Speaker 6: I liked it.
- 38:49Speaker 2: I really really liked.
- 38:50Speaker 6: It, so thank you.
- 38:52Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I'm just going to be that person that
- 38:54Speaker 2: just want to keep seeing it. If you were given
- 38:56Speaker 2: an ultimatum to give up playwriting or writing books, which
- 39:00Speaker 2: would you choose? Oh?
- 39:06Speaker 6: Uh, probably the place?
- 39:11Speaker 2: Place? Why the place?
- 39:15Speaker 6: I believe that my novel writing is my voice. And
- 39:20Speaker 6: even if I don't write the play from one of
- 39:23Speaker 6: the novels or around one of the novels, somebody else will.
- 39:28Speaker 2: And it's okay, you're welcome, I'm saying to the worst,
- 39:34Speaker 2: you're welcome.
- 39:36Speaker 6: Just so it is hard. I like the stories to
- 39:42Speaker 6: get out there writing things that and and most of
- 39:47Speaker 6: them have like a gospel undertune. Actually not most all
- 39:51Speaker 6: of them except one of my.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Has They write and looks so easy. You know, from
- 39:57Speaker 2: what I've seen of your writing, you make me look
- 39:59Speaker 2: so easy. What we enjoy most about writing? And what
- 40:03Speaker 2: would you say are some of the most valuable skills
- 40:05Speaker 2: as a playwright and writer? Because it just seemed like
- 40:09Speaker 2: it just smokes right and there, Oh, okay.
- 40:15Speaker 6: You need to be able to tell a good story.
- 40:18Speaker 6: And there's some basic fundamental like a novel is eighty
- 40:22Speaker 6: thousand words. That's a lot of words. So many people
- 40:24Speaker 6: don't know that you need to have that you need
- 40:29Speaker 6: to have. I'd like to have one hundred thousand words
- 40:32Speaker 6: when I write a book, because then I'm going to
- 40:35Speaker 6: always have six other pairs of eyes on that work
- 40:38Speaker 6: before it goes to publish. I want one person to
- 40:42Speaker 6: concentrate on spelling, one person to concentrate solely on punctuation,
- 40:47Speaker 6: one person to concentrate solely on subject and verb agreement,
- 40:51Speaker 6: one person to solely concentrate on formatting, one person to
- 40:56Speaker 6: concentrate solely on book cover, and then the final person
- 41:00Speaker 6: I want them to concentrate on storyline. And you know what,
- 41:03Speaker 6: I like my books to flow like a movie. I
- 41:06Speaker 6: want you to you know how you can read a
- 41:07Speaker 6: book and be like, I don't want to put this down.
- 41:09Speaker 6: That's what I want. I'm having even me translated into
- 41:13Speaker 6: Spanish right now, and that is the one thing that
- 41:16Speaker 6: I want. And that's where we have to go back
- 41:19Speaker 6: to the drawing board. I want it to be as
- 41:21Speaker 6: powerful and as emotional as it is in English. That's
- 41:25Speaker 6: what's missing you.
- 41:26Speaker 2: So are you thinking of putting your movies or books
- 41:32Speaker 2: in any other language besides Spanish? So any English and Spanish?
- 41:36Speaker 2: Are you thinking of any other right now?
- 41:38Speaker 6: It's because I've been asked in Spanish. There can be other,
- 41:44Speaker 6: I mean if other, If I and that's the language
- 41:46Speaker 6: that I'm familiar with. If the opportunity arises for me
- 41:51Speaker 6: to do something different and someone can come along and
- 41:54Speaker 6: assist to me because I don't I'm not really comfortable
- 41:58Speaker 6: in any other language, then yeah I could. I'm open
- 42:02Speaker 6: and I would be grateful.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Are there any playwrights that you believe are role models
- 42:08Speaker 2: for you? And it's so cool? Are they?
- 42:14Speaker 6: There's a young lady that's in the def W area
- 42:18Speaker 6: and her name is Evelyn. What is Evelyn's name? Oh jesus,
- 42:28Speaker 6: I'm trying to find Evelyn's name. She's she's a playwright
- 42:34Speaker 6: in the de f W area. And of course, let
- 42:39Speaker 6: me find her on Facebook because Evelyn is Evelyn Jones
- 42:46Speaker 6: read she. I tell her all the time, keep writing, baby,
- 42:50Speaker 6: because I'm walking right in your footsteps. Keep writing. She
- 42:54Speaker 6: is amazing. Not only did I watch her, she's I've
- 42:59Speaker 6: watch watch everything that she's been doing since I've been here.
- 43:04Speaker 6: She has actually spoken to me. And you know, like
- 43:06Speaker 6: I said, so many people have crab like mentalities she
- 43:08Speaker 6: does not. So as far as you know how some
- 43:11Speaker 6: people they will know how to get to the end ofdustry,
- 43:13Speaker 6: but they gonna charge you twenty cent to get to
- 43:15Speaker 6: the next to the next house, and so on and
- 43:18Speaker 6: so on. Evelyn is not that has not been that
- 43:21Speaker 6: to me. She has given me so many nuggets and
- 43:25Speaker 6: she is somebody that I'm telling you she is gonna
- 43:29Speaker 6: change the game. I don't know of anyone else. I
- 43:32Speaker 6: don't like to say bad things about people. If I
- 43:35Speaker 6: don't have something nice to say about a person, I
- 43:37Speaker 6: won't say anything at all, because that's just I don't
- 43:41Speaker 6: feel that that's a good thing. I don't think gossip
- 43:45Speaker 6: and I mean my opinion. I mean other people will
- 43:48Speaker 6: have another opinion.
- 43:49Speaker 2: But as far as yeah, and you know, and that
- 43:53Speaker 2: when when you're in this industry, and I always tell people,
- 43:58Speaker 2: it's not the music industry, you know, because for decades
- 44:03Speaker 2: there have been feuds between one group or another, or
- 44:06Speaker 2: one singer against another. And I feel as though it
- 44:11Speaker 2: didn't have to happen with society and the media does that,
- 44:15Speaker 2: but I don't see that in what we do being authored,
- 44:19Speaker 2: I don't see that. I remember a few times that
- 44:22Speaker 2: I would go to some events and other authors were there,
- 44:27Speaker 2: and I was happy to see that we were betraying
- 44:30Speaker 2: books with each other. And if somebody came to my
- 44:33Speaker 2: table and they were looking for a certain type of book,
- 44:37Speaker 2: if I didn't have it, I would say, but the
- 44:38Speaker 2: sister over there has it, and then they would do
- 44:40Speaker 2: the same thing with me. And you know, and I
- 44:43Speaker 2: keep saying, I said, this is not the record business.
- 44:45Speaker 2: We don't do that. I'm not going to ask you
- 44:47Speaker 2: to share the next five years of your life, but
- 44:50Speaker 2: can you tell us what you're working on now? Because
- 44:52Speaker 2: if you're just working on so much, but what pinpoint
- 44:54Speaker 2: one thing that you're really really working on now.
- 44:57Speaker 6: I'm writing another book.
- 45:00Speaker 2: I should have done to bother that. I'm not gonna
- 45:05Speaker 2: ask you for the title. I'm not gonna ask you anything.
- 45:07Speaker 2: I'm gonna wait until it comes out. And if it
- 45:12Speaker 2: turns into a play, you know, I'm gonna be watching
- 45:14Speaker 2: that one too. So I'm still trying to get over
- 45:17Speaker 2: this one that I'm watching and whatnot. So people may
- 45:19Speaker 2: be saying it ain't that, but yeah, I enjoyed it,
- 45:22Speaker 2: so you really have to see. I'm gonna say it again,
- 45:24Speaker 2: A mother's prayer, but get your tickets at that event
- 45:26Speaker 2: right for her other for her other play, because she's
- 45:30Speaker 2: she's something to be working. But I promise you that,
- 45:33Speaker 2: I promise you that we sat here and we learned
- 45:36Speaker 2: about Onyx King, the playwright, award win an, author, singer,
- 45:40Speaker 2: and entrepreneur. I want to know more about Internet Bryce.
