- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hello!
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to MNTB NFL podcast, that's Albert Brear.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Connor Orr.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: We're on day 621 of the coaching carousel, and getting ready for the NFL playoffs.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: I had my first, it was much worse when I was a beatwriter, which is weird to say this.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: In worse, just in relative terms, like this is a fun job.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: I love coaching carousel season.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's like,
- 0:28[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it's like, uh, being Woody Harrelson and True Detective.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: You got all the names on the board and you're looking for links and you draw on the red lines in between everything.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: And honestly, like, I'm a pig and shit right now.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: This is what I love.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: This is what I wait all year for.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: This is my Christmas, my Hanukkah, my New Year's, my Easter, all bundled into one of a second visual.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: Some people like the draft.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: I like the coaching care cell.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: But I have my first moment, uh, last night where I was like, perhaps my mind is not fully.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: Focus on the rest of my life like in my mind.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, okay, all right, if David's web interviews with the Raiders and this guy's gonna go here And this guy's gonna go here and I'm making tuna salad and I realize that I made tuna salad with peanut sauce instead of mayonnaise and Two very different things Albert to completely different colored condiments.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna say it was an interesting tasting dinner and And I'm gonna leave it at that so that's kind of where we're at right now.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, we're
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: the coaching carousel is consumed about 90% of the ram in my brain, which is great.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's exactly where I want to be.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_01]: I got a text on requests going at like 3am, so that was, you know, it's, uh, things are, you got a text to what?
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: On like requests going in at like 3 in the morning, so.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: which I appreciate.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, like, yeah, it's an interesting time of year.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's, you know, there's like a lot of like moving parts and everything else.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: And, um, do you know, I think like,
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: to me like my favorite part is kind of putting things together and what does this mean and what does that mean because things aren't always as they seem and we can write with a couple of these like where I think there's just like kind of there's definitely some moving parts you know and with some of these places there's a bigger picture in mind where when you start to piece the smaller moves together you can see it you know so we can get into all that.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you brought up, you and I were talking about this a little bit and I'm putting the bow right now on my first job rankings slash hiring predictions post, but with a massive caveat about half of the candidates who are going to interview for these jobs have not even been gotten slips put in yet and you mentioned it last night when you and I were talking on the phone and actually just got off the line with somebody who said, it really is,
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: a gentleman's agreement that seems to be held to this year that teams are not putting a little bit today, which is cracking a little bit today, but teams are not really putting in slips as much for assistance who are kind of active.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: Now, like you said today, we're taping this on Thursday morning that that is starting to fracture a little bit because I think everybody's getting a little bit.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think it starts to get competitive.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: you know what I mean like if one person puts in for this level then screw it like then I'm going to do it to you know but um but yeah like there has been that I think level of respect from from teams to try to respect the teams that are in the wild card ground because you can't talk to those guys until
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: Um, until next week anyway, you know, so, um, but yeah, I do think like I would say like this was kind of a benign kind of felt like a little bit of a benign coaching cycle until Tuesday night, you know, then I think Tuesday night kind of
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: recalibrated a lot of things.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think you wrote about this, right?
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like, but when John Harbug gets like, oh, by the Ravens, I think, you know, that throws a wrench into Kevin Stephansky.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: And where is he going to land?
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think a lot of people had kind of ticketed him for the giants.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: Now it's that influx.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: If Kevin Stephansky lands somewhere else, does that effect?
- 4:12[SPEAKER_01]: Um, does that affect where, hang on a second, does that affect where, where a few other guys go?
- 4:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you know, Jesse Minner, Jeff Hathley, I mean, where, where does the kind of the power rankings and the, and the slide where does everybody go?
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: Because I'll say this, you know, when I was looking at the rankings of the jobs, which I think is a valuable thing to do.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there is a blue blood job, there is an Alabama out there and that's Baltimore.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: You have a top five quarterback.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: You have an elite general manager.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: You have a patient owner.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: That is the triumphant.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: You don't just walk to a job like that.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: You run and you don't even ask how much it's paid.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: if you're in NFL, perspective at coach.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: Then you have the Giants and the Falcons that are in that second tier.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: Respectable organizations that have either been to or won Super Bowl's, you know, over the last 15 years.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: And talent on the roster.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I think winnable divisions.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: Atlanta, especially winnable division.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: From there,
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: it really kind of drops off a cliff, right?
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, after that, Tennessee, I think is a good job.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lot of coaches like the atmosphere there, they would like to raise a family there.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: There is a relative anonymity to that market, which I think is attractive to some people.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: And the other part is
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this division has gotten tougher around Tennessee, but I think it's one that you could probably throw elbows in, especially if Cam Ward is.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: is as good as people think he is, it's not Atlanta where I think again, that's probably the biggest part of the appeal twice in the last four years.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: This division has sent a sub 500 team to the playoffs.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: You can go in there and you can make noise right away.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: And then you have the Raiders in the Browns, and the Raiders in the Browns, I think are
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: difficult for different reasons.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: You're inheriting a GM in both cases.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: The Raiders you're just inheriting kind of a really unique situation.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: And if you're a coach, you got to get comfortable with whatever the Tom Brady situation is, because you don't know what it is, right?
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: And, and Cleveland, you have to be comfortable with the fact that Andrew Barry has managed to survive a lot of this and continues to survive a lot of this.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: you're inheriting a shit or a Sanders situation that is just a mind feels if you don't have finesse as a head coach and so I think a lot of those jobs just have warts and all of them do but there's some that don't right there's some that have fewer I would say I don't know yeah I mean I think so the way I look at it is like he had ball tomorrow which is up here
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: And then like I think the quality of the Giants job, the Raiders job, the Titans job, the Falcons job,
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: That all just rides on what you think of the young quarterback.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I get to over-simplify it, but there's nothing better than having a young quarterback on a rookie deal.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing worse than being tethered to the wrong quarterback, because not only are you not getting a play you want, but it's also, that also takes you off the market.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're franchise just drafted a quarterback in the first round,
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like, unless you wind up like with Brock Perty, like the Niners did, you're probably not going in and fixing that.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: So that's going to cost you a couple of years too, you know?
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: So to me, like the quality of the Giants job, to some degree rides on your assessment of Jackson Dart, the quality of the Titans job, rides on your assessment of camoord, the quality of the Falcons job, rides on your assessment of Michael Panics, and even the Raiders job, rides on what you think of Dante more
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, and so I mean, look, like for 90% of coaches, do you don't have multiple options?
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: You get offered one, you take one.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: But there are a few guys out there, like Harba, like like Stephansky, they could have multiple options and do have some flexibility, you know, and can wait if they want to wait, you know, and so I think for those guys, like really kind of how you look at this market and you look at what's available and you're kind of drilling down on all of that,
- 8:32[SPEAKER_01]: It all ties to like how you assess those young quarterbacks.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I, and I'm the first person who hates it when we make absolutely everything about the quarterback, but in this case, like it really is like why is Mike variable killing it his first year in New England?
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: A part of it's because he's a really really good coach and I thought all along is a top 10 coach in league, but he also has Drake May right and Johnson and Chicago right Ben Johnson's an excellent excellent offensive mind right, but
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: Does this look the same if he was in Vegas this year?
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, probably not, right?
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: So look, I, I just, I think so much of it rides on that on like what's your assessment of the young quarterback?
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: How do you view the young quarterback?
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think you can turn the young quarterback into minimum like a top 10 player at his position?
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: Because if you don't, then that should give you some pause.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I think, too, it's important to mention that when you're a coach and you're getting itchy and you're thinking about it, your natural innate ability as a coach to think, I can turn this around.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: I can fix this.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: I know what I'm doing kicks into overdrive and you have situations where
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, there was one job that turned over this year, and I remember when that person took the job talking to people close to him being like, he thinks he can fix it.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to turn it around.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: He thinks this quarterback is great, you know, and it's like, okay.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: And here we are, this team now has a vacancy again.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a reality in the Chinese job, like how big a factor was an inability to get the most out of Daniel Jones.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: and sustain it.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: How much of a factor was that in the fate of Joe Judge and Brian Dayball?
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: And like when Joe Judge got to the Giants in 2020, it was not an negotiable Daniel Jones to the quarterback.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: Like you don't have, you know, like there's no moving off of that, right?
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, like Brian Dayball and Joe Shane doubled down on Daniel Jones after they got a great year out of a minute wound up being their downfall, you know?
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like so, like I think like so much of it does tie to that.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I think if you're a defense gear, your hardball, where you will have options, you have to be like pretty honest with yourself about that, you know what I mean?
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you have to be like, look at it and say, and those guys are coming from two completely
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: was able to get like, when a Super World Joe Flacco, and then have turn Lamar Jackson in a two-time MVP, right?
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: So he's done twice.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: So he may be more apt to thinking I can make it work no matter what, where as DeFansky was with a first-over, I'll pick and baker Mayfield, and then a guy he traded three first-round picks for Deshawn Watson, and it didn't work.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: So he may be more apt to think this has to be perfect.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: Just an interesting that way.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's funny because, you know, for fans, and even I'll talk a little bit about the playoffs here at the end of the episode, you know, I just think that when John Hartball gets fired.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I like, I play off.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: But when John Harbug gets fired and the Ravens job opens and I think that there's maybe a cascading effect depending on who loses this weekend.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think it weren't so a little bit more of a nuanced discussion, but I have to laugh because I like
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: I love fans and I love their just the way that they are and I was on Reddit the other day just looking at something and when John Harbaugh got fired, there was a post in the Raiders Reddit forum that was like with the picture of John Harbaugh and it was like I don't know guys, you think we should give him a look and I was like...
- 12:36[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know how lucky you would be for John Harbott to give you a look like yeah What are those things that's like it in my point is Albert.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: I would be I can I can make a case Okay, I want you to make a case, but first I'll say this When you have Stephanski and when you have John Harbott on the market
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: This it exposes the tears I think to the fan base because if you're the titans for example You're sitting there and you're like why is everyone just putting this with Matt Neige like you know Why are we why are we in a conversation with John Harbour why are we in a conversation with Kevin Spanski Why are we in a conversation with all these guys?
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: because there's tears and because these coaches don't want to waste time and because they're going to interview for the jobs that they view or the best jobs.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: And I think sometimes as a fan, you look at it as, well, why aren't we getting this guy?
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: Why aren't we getting that guy?
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like because your owner isn't good.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: And like, like, well, sometimes it is, it is like, and I
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: But that's a factor that enough people don't look at, but like that's what Bill Parcells would tell all his young assistants way back.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: There's only one thing you can't change and that's the owner.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: So wherever you go, that's the one thing you can't change and it's why like a lot of like Parcells guys were so careful about where they went and that got passed down to Bellachek and
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: look at Vrable, who played for Bella Check, and after the experience that he had with Amy Adam Strong in Tennessee,
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: what did he go right he went to a place where he knew the owner he wasn't guessing you know what i mean like whether or not like this is the right owner like there was some certainty there for him yeah you know and you can't blame him because he was in again he was in that situation where the one thing i can't control is the owner and the one thing i can't change is the owner and so i better get that part of the equation right yeah yeah and it is
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: one of those situations where, again, I want you to make a case for John Arbond the Raiders, by the way, I think that's interesting.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I will, you know, I, Harbond was a consistent, not foil of all a check, but I think an intellectual counterpart during the best parts of that Patriots dynasty and I think they kind of went back and forth a little bit and so Brady might have an idea of, of that.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: But if you're someone like Harbond Brady probably scares you or
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: who there's a family relationship there what is it Jim and Tom Brady know each other pretty well they're both former Michigan quarterbacks from Brady was a cat was a game captain for Jim Harbott Michigan one like back few years ago
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: And there's, there's a relationship there, and all our body in the same division, my God, it would be so much.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: All right, it would be too much, all right.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: So Jim Harba, who's first, who is his first job with?
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: Jim Harba's first coaching job.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: first coaching job was it wasn't it like sin or a same.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he was with the Oakland Raiders.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: And who tried to hire Jim Harba a couple times when he went to Michigan, who is the other contender?
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: It was the Raiders.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: And John's my tech, their general manager, was together with John Harbour for four years in Philadelphia for three, three years in Philadelphia.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not saying that I'm not saying that John Harbour was going to go there.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: Don't get me wrong, but like when he got to Baltimore
- 16:41[SPEAKER_01]: They took a quarter back on the first round in Joe Flacco and they built from there, right?
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: You want to just have the big picture of John conversation now, because I think maybe that's the time to be what I'm saying.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think that might be the right time.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I think like I think like that family, the Harbaw family can romanticize football, like no one on the planet.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: The idea of going in and turning around the Raiders
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: There's the relationship with Brady.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: There's the tie to spy tech.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: There's the fact that you're going to have some runway to build it in your own kind of your own model.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_01]: You've got new ownership in there and the billionaires that they brought in as investors, Michael Melvin, and Michael Melvin, and he can derven in those guys.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I like to you trust Mark Davis is the question, right?
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: the rest of it, I kind of look at it and I'm like, you know, if you like from in No Mendoza or you like Dante Moore, and maybe you're not wild about to a or you're not wild about Jackson Dart, do you look at it and say,
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have to inherit somebody else's players.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: We can come in here and we can build, we've got one of the best practice facilities and in the league, we're in Vegas.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_01]: So we're gonna be able to recruit players, right?
- 18:14[SPEAKER_01]: We have like this crown jewel stadium.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I got a chance to revive an iconic brand and work hand-in-hand with Tom Brady and work hand-in-hand.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_01]: I think just the idea of doing that could spark something.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm not saying I don't know they'll be able to get them in for an interview.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think they'll talk to them.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if they'll be able to get them in for an interview because it'd be very easy for them to talk to him based on the presence of Brady in that whole equation, right?
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: But so I believe wholeheartedly they'll be able to have that conversation without a problem.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I don't know.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it kind of depends on what you're looking at.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like I just, okay, it's like, Miami to me.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_01]: So I think Miami is the one where you look at them and they had five GM interview requests went out on Monday, right?
- 19:15[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all had ties to Mike McDaniel.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: On Tuesday morning, they sent out a interview request for Chad Alexander.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know that is right, Connor.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: I do.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_01]: The charge of the Assistant General Manager, who works with Jim Horbaugh.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_01]: And who was before Baltimore before the Jets was where?
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Baltimore Baltimore.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: So, like you, the timing of that is interesting because Monday you put it in five.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: Then you put it in the extra one on Tuesday.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: If you're Brian win the horse fingers out right now.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: Why would they do?
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: You have an inkling of what might happen later in the day on Tuesday and did they want to prepare themselves for the eventuality?
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like, hey, if we want to do this, like, we want to have an idea of what we'd be looking at from a general manager perspective.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: Also, there's a relationship, obviously, there too.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_01]: And the Harba family's got a lot of relationships.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_01]: But like, the relationship between the Harba family and Stephen Ross, who's another Michigan guy,
- 20:21[SPEAKER_01]: I think the idea of going down there, like it's, I think things are sticky with the roster.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but like I don't think you're that, I think you can kind of pick some pieces, keep the pieces you want, like what do you think of to a we'll see, so that's a possibility.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: The giants to me will be the one that I would look at if I were hardball and I would say, this is the closest to being being a contender.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: Do you agree with that of those three of the giants?
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: The dolphins and the raiders.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, if the giant dolphins and raiders, yes.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: So like I would say like that's the one where you look at and say marquee franchise if you want to run more manicized football.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_01]: There's no better way to do it than being the head coach than the New York football giants.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: You could probably keep your family where they're family like it wouldn't be it wouldn't you wouldn't be like hugely uprooting your family like his daughter's grown now but like you know he and his wife moving from
- 21:18[SPEAKER_01]: Maryland, the New Jersey wouldn't be that big a, wouldn't be that big a shift.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_01]: You've got the Mara family.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you'd have, I think an opportunity to really be kind of the face of that organization and drive everything in that organization, except that's what they're looking for.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, like depending on what you think of Jackson Dart, you have Andrew Thomas at Love Tackle, you have Malik neighbors at receiver, you have Dexter Lawrence, an abdual Carter, and Brian Burns,
- 21:45[SPEAKER_01]: like I just I've looked at that roster for a year or two now and I've said like I just I think of a couple things break right they could be good really really fast.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: I uh I I think uh and by the way as we're recording this uh Josh Grisard is no longer the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers um so I think that's worth them.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: There you go.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_00]: Worth mentioning, I think that's probably your big change.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_00]: Todd Bulls is back.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: That's probably a domino that's not gonna fall.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_00]: But just the pure, like my son builds Legos and he's too young for the intricate sets, but he gets them anyway because he asks Grimm and Grim before and they just buy it for him.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and watching him put together these little pieces in this little set and then all of a sudden the baby just comes and smashes the thing off the table That was the NFL coaching cycle when John Harbaugh and the Raiders decided to go splitsville because I think that you have teams that are in the playoffs that are probably looking at John Harbaugh
- 22:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think that you have teams in the playoffs that are probably thinking, okay, if we get bounced in the first round here, we're going to jump in to the mix because we got to make a change.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm looking at Buffalo and I'm looking at Green Bay and wondering if those teams are going to maybe end up entering the fold because it's just, you know, they're hitting their own version of whatever it is, a glass ceiling or whatever you want to call it, right?
- 23:19[SPEAKER_00]: And so the pure
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: craziness of it when we thought we kind of understood how it was going to happen can't be understated.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: And if your team, I think it shows flexibility and the ability to be open-minded about it because if you're standing pat at this point and not adjusting your attack plan, I think you're nuts like this is
- 23:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'll ask you this.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: The Raven's job opening Albert is, and I think I know the answer, at least how I would see it, is the best NFL opening sense what?
- 23:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I have two options, if you want me to offer mine first.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just trying to think.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_00]: I had to go back if it helps to 2019 and 2020.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's the best opening since Mike McCarthy took over for the cover.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_00]: And Green Bay in 2019.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's that good.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_00]: And you could a lot of people are making an argument that like, oh, we'll, we're able to go over last year.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: No, like we didn't know the Drake May was a star.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we thought he was good and and that rest of that roster was not there.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like he brought a new date.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: They have been legitimately like they looked like a the rest of the roster was a mess.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_01]: Like that was a leap of faith from Brable on a certain couple different ways.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think Brable is institutional knowledge helped guide him to that.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_01]: But like I don't think anybody out there viewed that is like, oh my god, this is unbelievable.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like I don't think anybody saw it that way and I think the year before that when they fired Bill, it was Well, do you really want to be the guy who follows Bill, you know?
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: And it's hard to tell like how sought after it would have been because we didn't really have We didn't we didn't really have
- 25:21[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't, we didn't really have a search in either case, you know, they anointed, they anointed mail and a contractually had him already kind of like locked in.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_01]: One bill was fired and then after they fired mail, they ran, what's called, what it was a sham of a search to get themselves to variable, you know,
- 25:44[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but I think the Raven's job, like I, I don't know, like I, I sort of wonder here.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, Brian Flores is going to interview there, Matt Naggies is going to interview there, Clint Kubiex is going to interview there, so you have like some, some, some names that have already popped up, um, if your Marcus Freeman would you look at that one, yes, and I think he's an interesting name.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: I just think like he's one that like when you're talking about fit and I've said that floor is for a couple weeks now it'd be a really good fit in Baltimore, right?
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like I just feel like he's like he looks to me like he just kind of like looks to me like a raven, you know?
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're talking about fit, like I think Freeman fits in a lot of different ways.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_01]: Now, like you have to know about his staff and what's he going to do to adapt to the NFL game and everything else, but from a leadership standpoint, it would be outside the box.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's also instructive Connor to look back at the last time that's happened, which is the only time Steve Bishaddy's made a head coaching higher, which was in 2008.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_01]: And they went down the road.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: which Jason Garrett, they went down the road with Josh McDaniels and both those guys pulled their names out, right?
- 26:57[SPEAKER_01]: And they were looking at both of those guys as like top of the list types of candidates and they wound up thinking way outside the box and hiring a special team's coach, right?
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: Say that worked out pretty well, you know, 12 playoff appearances in 18 years, six division titles, I think four AFC title games and a Super Bowl win.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_01]: How far outside of the box they go this time?
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and so would Freeman be outside the box, would floor as be outside the box.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like I just, I sort of look at that and it's like the easy thing to do here is to just say, okay, like we need to like attach somebody to the large accent, do you have to do that, you know?
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: Or like are you going to think a little bit differently?
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: Cause I think that organization is always challenged itself to think differently.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right, and I think that anybody out there who, and because I pushed back on this, when I was talking to people about this over the last couple days, and, you know, you're texting people and you're kind of, you know, bouncing ideas off of off of people in the industry, and everyone's like, well, this has to be a Lamar hire.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it does.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_00]: Because.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_00]: Let's be honest Albert, like Lamar's going to come right back to the negotiating table again after wanting a fully guaranteed deal.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to be back in the fold again this offseason, wanting a fully guaranteed deal or something close to it.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_00]: He's showing no...
- 28:20[SPEAKER_00]: inclination to change, and I'm not saying this is a bad thing.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: But like, he's Lamar.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: He's an island.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't trust anybody.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_00]: And that will perpetually be something that the ravens have to deal with until he's no longer worth dealing with, right?
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: And so you don't know whether that's going to be today, tomorrow, five years from now, or eight years from now, right?
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: And so you can't plan your head coaching career around Lamar because you don't know what Lamar is thinking because Lamar and
- 28:50[SPEAKER_00]: and I don't blame Lamar for this, but Lamar doesn't trust a lot of people.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: So you don't know where his head's at.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 28:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_01]: I think for Lamar thing is tricky.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_01]: So just a sad little bit more.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_00]: Just a Notre Dame hoodie by the way and saying that Marcus Freeman's a good coach and that the Raven should hire him.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I actually don't think I please don't hire Marcus Freeman guys.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, if Ryan Day winds up going to the NFL at some point, you're going to have a problem there too, so it's going to be coming in at you from multiple ends.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: The Mars situation is complicated.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_01]: I think to understand that you have to lay out the contract situation, right?
- 29:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think this piece of it's interesting, so last year Josh Allen gets a contract correction from the bills and then that sparks some talks between Lamar and the Ravens, which don't work out obviously, they didn't wind up getting a new deal done.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_01]: And someone pointed out to me this that I thought was sort of interesting is that Lamar's bumpy asses is when he's missed the most time, we're all in the midst of contract negotiations.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_01]: The most significant missed time for him was in 21, 22, and 25, all after failed to contract negotiations, right?
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: Like, here's the thing.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: Is do you have to sign him doing his extension now or risk like this isn't going to look right next year?
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: And do you want that to be the foot that your new coach is getting off on?
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean, if you want to get off on the right foot?
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: And so now are you kind of cornered because you've done this.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so, look, Lamar's at $52 million for next year.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: I believe 29 of that's already fully guaranteed.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: So he's going to be on the team next year.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: He's at $52 million for 2027.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: That is not guaranteed.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_01]: Are you, if you do a new deal with him, you're looking at what?
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: Probably guaranteeing another three years out.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_01]: So now you're well into his 30s.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_01]: And you're probably looking at a new money average of 65.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: Are you ready to do that?
- 31:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: So I think I would be.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I think like...
- 31:09[SPEAKER_01]: the idea that you're going to kick the can down the road another year is problematic because of the history of of when you've been in these situations with Le Mar.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then the weird years, the years when he's missed time, the year where oh well this is this is wrong or that's wrong, but they all seem to have been in years when the contract was an issue.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_01]: And so like you don't want to put your first year coach through that do you?
- 31:33[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_01]: So I just think it's like if I'm the
- 31:39[SPEAKER_01]: And I know that I'm gonna be, I know I'm all in on the mark and he's our quarterback.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm actually maybe starting to negotiate the deal now.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you're going in right now and doing it.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just getting it off the plate, getting him in a good mood, getting him to feel like he's part of the process when you get in there.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I don't know.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think that makes the most sense.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_00]: Let's do, because I'm wrapping this up on my end and you can read it later today on
- 32:09[SPEAKER_00]: And so I have all seven openings laid out.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_00]: We've played this game before, and we're gonna play it again, and I wanna put a giant caveat on this, guys, that like again, there's gonna be names that start flying out next week, and I have one.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_00]: if you're interested, Albert, that I think is going to it's going to be kind of interesting to watch.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, like your Jeff Halfleys, they haven't been requested yet if I'm not mistaken, like your Matt Berks from Houston haven't been requested yet.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: Chris Schulah and Nate Sheelhouse also from the Rams.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be a guy that we're going to hear a lot about this coming week, because as we're
- 32:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of those situations where they're just cut in the line.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_00]: There's not that elite play collar that's available right now.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I think what you're seeing is teams just going, okay, well, who's next?
- 33:05[SPEAKER_00]: We got former quarterbacks.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_00]: We got guys with experience.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: We got guys who can probably call it if they wanted to.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_00]: Then I'm just gonna go get them and we'll deal with the bumps in the road.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_00]: So let's just play a quick game of like,
- 33:18[SPEAKER_00]: association.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_00]: This is non-binding and let's remind ourselves that we're going to do this three more times before the end of the year.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's interesting.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_00]: So we got Baltimore first.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's the best job.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I would say to me,
- 33:35[SPEAKER_00]: absent Marcus Freeman reneging on his commitment to Notre Dame, which I'll remind him that he did and will never forgive you if you don't if you do this Marcus Um, but I don't know our college was pretty common now.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you're following the situation at the University of Washington, but that was interesting And you're talking about by the way like your Ohio state sickness like I would be lying if I didn't already I haven't already texted like eight people about this where I was like
- 34:02[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, if Marcus Freeman takes the rate rate, rate, rate, rate, rate, and shop, then we got to go get Tommy Reese from Cleveland.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_00]: And we got to bring Tommy Reese in to coach note, you know, so I've already, I've got it mapped out.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I know how I'm gonna handle it.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how Notre Dame's gonna handle it, but hopefully they don't.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: uh... mess it up if that's the case but let's say Marcus Freeman's over here he's not available he's ours you can't have him um... i look at this is maybe a kubiac flora's mentor kind of mix for that job i don't know what do you think kubiac flora's mentor
- 34:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just trying to think, like, what other ones?
- 34:45[SPEAKER_01]: Because Kubey asked the family connection, right?
- 34:47[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I think, even though he was only there for, I believe it was a year in 2014, was Gary there for a year, right?
- 34:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 20,000.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: They loved him there.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like John Harbaw would have had Gary Kubey because his offense of coordinator forever.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_01]: He was both loved in that building.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: So Clint makes sense there.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_01]: Floor has makes sense there.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: Who's your other one?
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I had Flores, I had Mentor.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_00]: Mentor.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_00]: Mentor.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_01]: So, here's the thing with Jesse.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think Jesse's a really good football coach.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, he's been there before he knows the organization in her now.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_01]: To me, that won't be a decision so much on Jesse as it will be, do we want to continue what we've been doing?
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: Which has been really freaking good, right?
- 35:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like so, I think you have to make that decision.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_01]: And that there's more of like a big picture decision there, which is, are we going forward with the program we already have?
- 35:44[SPEAKER_01]: Jesse, of course, is coach for Jim now at both Michigan and with the Chargers and the programs have a lot of the same tenants and I think part of what went wrong at the end in Baltimore for John.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he lost the locker room.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think the guy's in the locker room.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm there's great affection for him there.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm there's great affection for him with the leaders from a lot of the leaders in that team.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think part of the issue there was the fit between coach and roster and program and roster.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: And I think like most people played form with Talia, John, and a lot of ways is the players.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_01]: Coach, you'll listen to players, you'll take players input.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: on both scheme wise like are we wearing pads there we not wearing pads day house camp set up what what is our schedule look like like john will take input from players on all that like in that way he is very much a players coach but
- 36:43[SPEAKER_01]: That is a demanding program.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: And they ask a lot of you.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: And so it also, I think, requires the acquisition of players who can handle that.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_01]: And so if there was a little bit of a disconnect, they'll ask a couple of years there,
- 37:00[SPEAKER_01]: Do they shy away from someone with the same roots?
- 37:05[SPEAKER_01]: And that's not Jesse's fault.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_01]: Jesse's a really good football coach, but do they want to go a different way?
- 37:11[SPEAKER_01]: And that would sort of be my question there.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_01]: Now, Floor is this really tough on players too, you know what I mean?
- 37:17[SPEAKER_01]: But you ought to talk to the guys in Minnesota is sort of a similar deal.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_01]: Tough demanding asks a lot of us, but like he gets the most out of us, you know?
- 37:25[SPEAKER_01]: and that's a sort of player you need.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I think it's interesting that way.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: You know, whereas like if you looked like a Jeff Hathley, Jeff Hathley has been a head coach before we mentioned him with the giants, you know, I think he's somebody who has a really good way of reaching players, right?
- 37:43[SPEAKER_01]: So he's always been able to
- 37:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and you look at it at Boston College, how he's able to keep his A-flowers there for an extra year's A, of course, is in Baltimore.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_01]: Xavier McKinney had his issues at the end with the giants.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, halfway he maximized him the same thing with Micah Parsons this year coming over from Dallas.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: Do you look at going a little bit more in that direction?
- 38:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's just interesting because I think you have these big picture questions that you can ask.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_01]: you know, looking at the makeup.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Clint would be another one where you look at Clint's background in the Shannon and system.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_01]: They've always been able to kind of assimilate different kinds of guys, you know?
- 38:18[SPEAKER_01]: So there's like an interesting, I think, big picture component to all of this that ties into who exactly you're hiring as the coach.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: So, okay.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think we have a general idea on this one.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_00]: Let's, let's play this, again, I just want like first name that comes to your mind for this one, Atlanta.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think?
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I've seen this a couple different places and I'm like, I wonder if they would take a swing on getting Matt LaFlor.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: Um, okay.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I mean, like, there's the contract situation with the Packers that needs to be worked out.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if I'm Matt Ryan, I mean, that was my position coach when I went to the Super Bowl, right?
- 39:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_01]: So would you at least make that phone call?
- 39:05[SPEAKER_01]: And just like, okay, like, I don't know if he's available.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: I just want to call the check, you know what I mean?
- 39:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think you maybe would.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think they're going to hire the GM first.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_01]: My guess would be that GM is probably, if I had to bet right now, I'd say Ian Cunningham as GM.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_01]: Let me see.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: After that, I mean, floors has got the relationship with Matt Ryan.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_01]: They were teammates at Boston College.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, that's something to keep an eye on.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_01]: Clint Kubiak, I think it's going to be in the next there, as well.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_01]: Matt Ryan's greatest success as a player came with Kyle Shannon Hannah as his coordinator.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, so for the same reasons I said, you know, you would reach back into your past to get Matt LaFloria's never the direct connections to Clint, but I think Clint would be a name that would be on the list as well.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_00]: Well says Matt Ryan connections.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_00]: Who's that?
- 39:57[SPEAKER_00]: Philly guy.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_00]: uh... both from the same area i think uh... kevin stevanski's first year of coaching at pen was when matt rhyme is finishing up at william pen charter they know the same people the from the same area someone put it to me this way too and i think it makes sense it's like kevin is like you know they're going to be able to be probably know a lot of the same people they've been and they've been from the same area
- 40:21[SPEAKER_00]: And also it's just like like Kevin and Matt, I think are two guys that would just hit it off.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 40:29[SPEAKER_00]: And Kevin's not that far from it.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I guess you're saying it's just from a personality standpoint.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and Kevin's not that far from the Kubi Actory.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's not like he's, what his mentor is carrying.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: Right, exactly.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_00]: And what I'm saying the offense he runs now is not.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_00]: two distant from from that offense and so that's something that him and Matt I'm sure could bridge the gap on all right so I think that's interesting the giants I think you and I are both in locks up on this I mean I think that's harboss right I mean I think so yeah if he doesn't go to Miami what she doesn't go to Miami
- 40:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, do we go through that yet?
- 41:02[SPEAKER_01]: All this stuff has jumbled my head, but like the mind, the nuance and the main thing, right?
- 41:06[SPEAKER_01]: Which, yeah, which I know.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which I always knew we went through that.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, the giants, I think, is Harbov.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's not Harbov.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's the fansky.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_01]: If it's not the fansky, it's somebody like halfway or Shula.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, let's think we're in lockstep on that one.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_00]: Um, the Titans, I mean, I literally just was asking someone about this five minutes before we jumped out of the pod.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think the Matt Nagy thing is real Albert.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_00]: I really do.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_01]: I just wonder, so, like, could you see like Robert Solow with Nagy as his co-offence of coordinator?
- 41:37[SPEAKER_01]: something like that.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, actually.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but if you're naggy, do you leave the chiefs to call place?
- 41:44[SPEAKER_00]: Here's the other thing.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I agree, I agree.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think naggies in good shape in that one.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think Salas got our shot with that one.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: If the giants, if the giants
- 42:02[SPEAKER_01]: puts to Fansky back out there and if he does it with Atlanta, then maybe he lands in Tennessee.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_01]: Does he does this Tennessee makes sense for him?
- 42:10[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think it could, you know, like there's a young quarterback there who's just going into his second year.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_01]: And like, it kind of feels like he's what they need.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 42:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like now,
- 42:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think we have to look at, I know you've pointed this out a few times, right?
- 42:28[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they're going into a new stadium in the year.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_01]: So, they'd like to spark some excitement there, too.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_01]: So, I think part of that is going to be like Mike Borgonzi, the general manager, is going to make the higher.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of that's going to come down to, too.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_01]: like the reality is that the owners got the final say and I think I think she like a PR win.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want to mean like so after a few years.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_01]: So you do wonder about that component of it too.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe Stephansky gives you a PR win because he saw that after you know.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, Stefansky would be a Stefansky B huge PR win.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: If you're the Titans and you ended up coming away with Kevin.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, that is, that's a slim dunk.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_00]: Arizona Las Vegas and Cleveland are so weird.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I've Cleveland is my least appetizing job.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: I have Matt Burke.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: You and I have talked about that Albert.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Matt Burke has the Andreberry connections.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_00]: He has Jim Schwartz connections.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that if it's not Matt Burke, maybe it is just Jim Schwartz.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 43:29[SPEAKER_00]: At this point, because what else?
- 43:31[SPEAKER_00]: What else are you going to do?
- 43:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think there are another one that's going to, I mean, look, like everybody's going to make a round of hardbob.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: But I think they're going to make a round of hardbob.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that they would be in the running for hardbob.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_00]: You think you can stay in that division?
- 43:42[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he's pissed.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_01]: But, but, but are the browns, the two- He did grow up a browns fan has been, has been circulated.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_00]: But, but it's like, do you, I hate to make the, it's, I'm not gonna make the analogy that I think I'm gonna make, but it's like, after the breakup, it's like,
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: what do you walk in back into the high school reunion with you know what I mean and and Cleveland is you know it's like check out what I got going on here Yeah, I mean, I think it's just interesting that the initial list of names were like a new day the The sea hocks deep as a party is right because really I that's it that that's a that's a smart.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think you get to job next year
- 44:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I think he's like, I think he's like definitely like when he gets in the room, I think he's going to impress people.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_01]: He's just a good guy.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_01]: He's I think got presence, you know, like I, I'm rooting for a, I'm rooting to have an NFL coach with a head coach with a British accent.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, me too.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think that'll throw people off a little bit, you know.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_01]: And then they bring in Todd Munkin, who is there previously, and they bring in Dan Pitcher, and it does make you wonder, like, are they looking at, like, potential, like, mix and match, like, how do we put a staff together?
- 45:02[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll be interested to see what's happening there.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think they are slow playing it a little bit, so I think we're going to have a longer interview
- 45:17[SPEAKER_01]: So the Raiders, to me, like, I think the quarterback piece of this is going to be really important, huge, because they have the first overall pick, whether that's Fernando Mendoza or Dante Moore.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to need somebody to work with that young quarterback.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I think,
- 45:36[SPEAKER_01]: So like with John Harbaw, the reason I brought another reason I brought him up is he may not be calling the place, but it seems like he did a pretty fucking good job developing two young quarterbacks.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, yeah, I'd say like you say, like, I mean, he took two guys that were drafted outside of the half, first half of the first round.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_01]: And turn one into a suitable champion or another into two time MVP, right?
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so those weren't guys that everyone was sold on or else they would have gotten drafted higher.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so like I think he, I actually think the quarterback thinks works for him.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_01]: But regardless of who it is, um, it's either going to be an offensive guy or a guy who has a very defined plan of what he is looking for at the quarterback position.
- 46:31[SPEAKER_01]: And a plan for how he's going to build it out.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: that is the Raider system that will be run after that first offensive court need or leaves if they can turn Mendoza or more into a superstar.
- 46:50[SPEAKER_01]: Does that make sense?
- 46:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, you know, because if you want to look at Tom Brady's background right, so they had the Patriot offensive system.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_01]: It was Charlie Weiss, then it was Josh McDaniels, then it was Bill O'Brien.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: and they evolved it and they evolved it, but Tom had the consistency of the system, right?
- 47:09[SPEAKER_01]: And this wasn't like losing Charlie Weiss and all this, like, let's go hire one of Mike Shannon Hans' assistants.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's like a nuanced, this whole thing that, you know, any defensive coach, any guy who doesn't coach the quarterback directly or I would play sheet on his hand in his hands on Sunday, like an offensive play sheet in his hands on Sunday, I think it's going
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, Arizona.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: Arizona is going to look for, I'd say, battleship commander type.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I don't know if their Dan Campbell is out there.
- 47:52[SPEAKER_01]: But and maybe that's Davis web, you know, I don't know, but I think that like when you're looking at like, okay, like, what is this going to look like going forward?
- 48:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'll leadership some big deal in all these.
- 48:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think leadership's going to be really important for them.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, someone's got to go in there and, you know, someone's got to go in there and kind of
- 48:17[SPEAKER_00]: flap the rug open up the doors and the windows and and get a vibe check.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_00]: I just think that, you know, there in and it's probably just not a place for for a for a really young guy.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like, someone like Vance is interesting to me in Arizona.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_00]: Don't you think so, Albert?
- 48:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and imagine if
- 48:39[SPEAKER_00]: Let's say Davis Webb doesn't get the Raiders job and Davis Webb wants to call plays next year.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, what if Vance takes Davis Webb to Arizona?
- 48:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know?
- 48:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think that's a, I mean, that would be a huge win.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think for the Cardinals, because you've already seen Vance in a leadership role there.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_00]: He had a lot of head coaching responsibilities in Cliff King's Barrier was there.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think the idea of,
- 49:05[SPEAKER_01]: I really like the idea of Davis, where I was a head coach.
- 49:08[SPEAKER_00]: I do too.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really intrigued to see what his staff would look like.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, the one to me, who I think should be getting more traction.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think we talked about this, right, is Josh McCown.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I know.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_00]: Josh McCown and and and and I'll follow that up to with Albert is is David Shaw like David Shaw It was running what he was running at Stanford with Andrew luck is like what everybody's has now in their arsenal I mean it was big tie it was multiple tight-ends sets.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_00]: It was big formations.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: It was bully ball and that's I mean a lot of teams and I remember
- 49:52[SPEAKER_00]: I remember Greg Bedard, who used to work with us at the MMQB, going down there and visiting with him, and writing about that, like 10 years ago, like that, the NFL teams were going to start copying that.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_00]: Greg was way ahead of his time.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_00]: I was right, yep.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, in David Shaw, he got the personnel experience in the NFL.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_00]: He has the past game coordinator experience in the NFL now.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't know.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_00]: That's another guy that's like, why aren't we talking to him?
- 50:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_00]: You know, but McKinsey and the Slubber too, I think.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know?
- 50:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and I have before we pivot to the playoffs a quote that I have to read you Albert because you know what sometimes things just happen to perfectly for my head coaching list this year, which you can go read at mmrs.com.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_00]: I called Cliff Kingsbury to talk about Davis Webb, and Cliff said the following, if I had a son playing quarterback, I'd want him to play for Davis Webb.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not making this up because he's a coach now, but his freshman year, he had a book of plays that he would keep track of in the NFL and from college, and he would show me them and we talk about them.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_00]: It surprises me zero that he's landed in this profession and he's moving up very quickly.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 51:08[SPEAKER_01]: I would, there's going to be a 30 for 30 on like Cliff Kingsbury's Texas Tech Quarterbacks.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_00]: I thought you were going to say a 30 for 30 on my head coaches list.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, but Cliff had Baker Mayfield, Davis Webb, Patrick Mahomes.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_01]: There's one I'm missing, too, that I'm not thinking of right now, but I mean, holy crap.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 51:31[SPEAKER_01]: Like I, I, uh,
- 51:34[SPEAKER_01]: Texas, Texas, just higher him back.
- 51:36[SPEAKER_01]: So they got that billion air like they got that billion air oil guy that's like, I can't remember the guy.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_01]: Cori Coleman or Cody Cole, Cody Campbell, something like that, who's like, apparently like, I mean, the real-life landman, you know, like, which is the reason why they're in the playoffs this year and everything else.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_01]: And with that kind of checkbook and close the ability to bring quarterbacks in, like, let's go.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go, real quick, for we get out of here our playoff predictions are now live at SID.com.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_00]: You guys can check them out.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_00]: Find them on social media.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: Just real quick.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_00]: You've got this.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_00]: You've got this.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_01]: You've got this.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_00]: You've got this.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_00]: You've got this.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_00]: We get Albert Pittsburgh in Houston.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, did I make, so I gotta make sure this matches my picks, which I took about 30 seconds to do yesterday.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_00]: I have them, I'm used to them.
- 52:28[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 52:29[SPEAKER_01]: I have used them in the AFC Championship game.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_00]: I have them losing in the next round.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_00]: I do have them winning.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_00]: I have used them as well.
- 52:37[SPEAKER_00]: Jacksonville and Buffalo.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_01]: Jacksonville and Buffalo, I have Buffalo.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, me too.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_00]: New England and the Chargers.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 52:49[SPEAKER_00]: I have the chargers.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_00]: Just fun.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, just because Packers bears I think it took the packers.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_00]: I did too Eagles 49ers took the Niners.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, all right.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_00]: I liked that.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_00]: And Rams Panthers.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_00]: Rams.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_01]: Was it the easiest one?
- 53:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:10[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that was a fun game.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's done a great job, but by the way, I just pulled it up.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 53:16[SPEAKER_01]: Cliff Kingsbury quarterbacks.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_01]: We want to put a ball in this.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do it.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_01]: So the University Houston case, Keenham, a Texas in M Johnny Menzel.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_01]: Oh God.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, a Texas tech.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_01]: Baker Mayfield, Davis Web, Patrick Mahomes.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_01]: Now Nick Shimoneck was the quarterback in 2015.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_01]: And then it falls off a little bit Alan Bowman who transferred to Michigan eventually so but like that run that got cut off after my homes so in college he coach case keenham Johnny Manzel Baker may feel Davis web Patrick my home is pretty good run not bad It's a pretty good run and it's like are you a great quarterback coach or are you just
- 54:16[SPEAKER_00]: And this is going to sound offensive, but it's not.
- 54:18[SPEAKER_00]: But like, when Bruce Aryan's wrote his book, quarterback whisper, they ship me a copy of it.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_00]: And on the cover is Peyton Manning, Ben Rothersberger, Carson Palmer, and it's just like, are you a great quarterback's coach?
- 54:32[SPEAKER_00]: We're all...
- 54:33[SPEAKER_00]: or are you incredibly lucky or some combination?
- 54:38[SPEAKER_01]: I would say he's smart and low because Cliff.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_01]: So I actually watched Cliff play in college because I was the first game of our national championship run in O2, I was just graduating.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I was at the game where Texas Tech played Ohio State and it was like the end of August that year.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Cliff Kingsbury's number one receiver was the Texas Tech.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_01]: Oh God, they have no idea.
- 55:03[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: And West Walker, I remember we're 27 and we could not cover him.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_01]: Now we beat the crap out of him, but we could not cover him.
- 55:13[SPEAKER_01]: So Cliff, like his story, like you just kind of like look across it, like right?
- 55:21[SPEAKER_01]: Again, so I can still remember
- 55:25[SPEAKER_01]: you know, obviously he was on New England's team for he bumped around the NFL for a while, played with the jets, you know, in 05.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I, you kind of forgot about him.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_01]: And then I remember watching a Texas A&M game in 2012 when Johnny Manzell had burst into this scene.
- 55:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, who's that hipster on the sideline?
- 55:46[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, that's Cliff Kingsbury.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, you could tell a pretty good story about Cliff and his history and football, kind of his journey through all of this, and I'll be interested to see where he lands next year.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I obviously would happen in Washington happen now, but I do think like if Davis winds up, get one of these certainly there's a possibility that Cliff goes with them.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see what happens and, you know, or vice versa, cliff flying up to somehow getting a, you know, right job, then what Davis fees off its coordinator.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, baby.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_00]: We're just we're just we're just starting cooking just starting cooking and guys I hope you enjoy the playoffs this weekend Albert and I will be out in about And I'll check in from Philly on Monday morning before heading back up on 95 so I'll be there hoarding on that game and
- 56:47[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see what happens.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_00]: Play out, you know, we're going to get more into the on field stuff here next week, but you know, my thought process here guys was that like, you know, whatever.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_00]: There's ten fan bases that care about what's happening, this coming weekend, and the rest of this kind of impacts everybody else that's hanging out here.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_00]: So that was my thought.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_00]: Hope you enjoyed it, and we will see you guys next week.
- 57:24[UNKNOWN]: You
