- 0:02Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to Radioized Children's Story Hour. It's a
- 0:05Reminder is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:09blinder of other disabilities that make it difficult to read
- 0:12PRIMM material. Today we will be reading from various books
- 0:16on airports and airplanes. Your reader today is Diane. We
- 0:21will continue with the book The Airport The Inside Story.
- 0:27It was published by Saint Martin's Press. It has a
- 0:30copyright era of twenty twenty three and the author is
- 0:34John Walton. Preparing for takeoff, lots of different people have
- 0:40important jobs to do before an airplane is ready to
- 0:43take to the sky. For safety, passengers normally get on
- 0:46and off the plane on its left hand side. All
- 0:49the jobs such as catering, refueling, and baggage loding usually
- 0:54happen on the right hand site. Food delivery Tim drives
- 0:59a truck a scissor lift that carries all the metal
- 1:02carts prepared by the catering team. Jada rows every cart
- 1:08straight into the airplane. Refueling airplanes use special fuel called kerosene.
- 1:15Sometimes this is made from plants. To refuel the plane,
- 1:19Nor connects her fuel pumper truck to the underground system
- 1:24and to the wing of the plane. Loading luggage. On
- 1:27some planes, luggage is loaded bag by bag into the hold.
- 1:31Sarah sends the luggage up a conveyor belt to Bob,
- 1:34who's waiting inside the plane. Ramp. Supervisor Ka make sure
- 1:40the airplane is ready to go and that everyone has
- 1:42performed their jobs. Baggage handlers Sarah and Richard drive luggage
- 1:47from the terminal to the plane and make sure it
- 1:49gets on board. Catering staff Tim and Jada work for
- 1:53the catering company, which makes all the food that passengers
- 1:58and crews eat on boards in the belly of the plane.
- 2:05Everything that an airplane carries is in its package hold
- 2:09is called the cargo. This includes suitcases, life saving medicine,
- 2:13and even fresh fish. On big planes, luggage is loaded
- 2:17into specially shaped metal containers that fit inside the curved
- 2:21body of the aircraft. Some other cargo goes in these
- 2:24containers too, while some is loaded into flat palettes. Does
- 2:29someone order sushi? Roger and his team are handling a
- 2:32big shipment of fresh fish. Roger is a loadmaster, and
- 2:37he is responsible for making sure everything is loaded in
- 2:40the right order and safely secured in the hold. One
- 2:44of the team my mood checks his table to see
- 2:48which pallette to load next before arriving here. At the
- 2:51loading dock, the fish was put into containers and large
- 2:55in a large warehouse at the airport a refrigerated room
- 3:00to the fish cod weird and wonderful cargo. Airplanes can
- 3:05transport all kinds of special cargo in the hold. Have
- 3:09you ever wondered what might be underneath your seat while
- 3:11you doze off to sleep up in the cabin flying animals.
- 3:16If you think it's only people that fly around the world,
- 3:19think again. Some animals have busy schedules too. Race horses
- 3:23need to travel to international races, while animals such as
- 3:27pandas are phoonn to zoos in different countries. Medicines, foxing,
- 3:32and other medicines can be flown from where they are
- 3:34made to where they are needed. They often have to
- 3:37be kept in refrigerated containers open wide. Some planes are
- 3:41specially made to carry cargo. A few of these special
- 3:45planes even have noses to lift up to allow the
- 3:48cargo on board. It almost looks like the plane is
- 3:52smiling fresh food. Have you ever wondered how bananas, mangoes,
- 3:57and other tropical fruit can be bought in shopped across
- 4:00the globe All year round. Fresh fruit and vegetables are
- 4:03flown to international destinations daily. Flashy cars, sports cars, or
- 4:09luxury luxury vehicles can be delivered from the factory to
- 4:13their new owners by plane. They're carefully loaded on board
- 4:17using special equipment. Wildlife at the airport. Felix the falcon
- 4:23swoops around the airport chasing away geese. He has a
- 4:27very important job making sure that birds don't fly too
- 4:30close to airplanes. His trainer, Mina, wears a special leather
- 4:34glove for him to land on, and she gives them
- 4:37a treat. Good job, Felix. All that training paid off.
- 4:41While Mina deals with the birds, Ken is busy taking
- 4:44care of bigger wildlife today too. Deer are getting too
- 4:47close to the fence that surrounds the airport. For everyone's safety,
- 4:51they shouldn't be here. Ken drives his truck up to
- 4:54them and turns on the speakers. Hongkong. He plays the
- 4:58recording of a deer danger call, and the deer run
- 5:01back to the forest. They might visit the airport again,
- 5:04but Ken will be ready. Is that a bird isn't
- 5:08a plane, No, it's a drone. Sometimes the falcons like
- 5:11Felix aren't available. Airports use drones to buzz around and
- 5:16scare off birds. Airplanes are the only things with wings
- 5:19allowed at the airport. If birds fly into an airplane
- 5:22or its engines, they could cause an accident, so it's
- 5:25always better to be on the safe side. Firefighters at
- 5:30the ready. Did you know that every airport has a
- 5:33fire station. Although accidents and fires are very rare, firefighters
- 5:38need to be ready for every emergency. Limb is the
- 5:41fire Cheap and he is supervising firefighters Judith and Cawlu
- 5:46as they check that all the hoses, fire engines, and
- 5:50other equipment are ready for whatever may come their way.
- 5:53Firefighters at the airport use special fire engines that can
- 5:57go off road if needed. That's so that they can
- 6:00drive over the grassy areas around runways in case in
- 6:03airplanes gets off while taking off or landing. The fire
- 6:07engines that Judith and Klou drive have big nozzles on
- 6:11the front that can spray foam or water, depending on
- 6:14what's needed to fight the fire. Occasionally, when they have
- 6:17some downtime, firefighters spray water in a big arch to
- 6:21welcome new planes to the airport. Firefighters train regularly to
- 6:25put out fires as quickly and as safely as possible. Today,
- 6:30Judith and Kaalalou are performing a routine fire drill. They
- 6:33are using training equipment that includes something that looks like
- 6:36an airplane but isn't. This fake airplane is called a
- 6:40fire training rig is used by firefighters to learn how
- 6:44to put out an aircraft fire. Limb shows Kallalou and
- 6:48Judith where to aim lower Kalalou by the engine, pilots
- 6:54and flight attendants. Every airplane has at least two pilots
- 6:58and a team of flight attendants who make up its crew.
- 7:02They work together to fly the plane and look after
- 7:05the passengers. Make sure to greet them when you board
- 7:08the plane. Pre flight prep before every flight, the crew
- 7:12have a meaning to get to know one another and
- 7:14share information about the flight, time, passengers, and safety protocols.
- 7:19The team, pilots and flight attendants walk through the airport
- 7:23and go through security and passport control just like you.
- 7:27Captain Beverly is in charge of this crew today. Flight
- 7:31deck checklist on board. Captain Beverly and First Officer Jean
- 7:36Luke take their seats in the flight deck. The cabin
- 7:40where all the controls are. Before every flight, they use
- 7:43that checklist to make sure that the plane is ready
- 7:45to fly. Parking breaks, set shocks removed. Safety first flight
- 7:52attendants keep all the passengers on the plane safe before
- 7:56taking off. In ten Shawna and Liza check the but
- 8:00all of the safety equipment is on board and ready
- 8:03to be used if needed getting on the plane. Once
- 8:06inside the plane, Sophia and Rowan look at their tickets
- 8:10with a confused look on their faces. Twenty C and
- 8:13twenty E. What does that mean? Their mom shows flight
- 8:16attendant Shawna. The family's tickets just walked on the aisle
- 8:20until you see the number twenty above the seats, Shawna says, cheerfully.
- 8:24On an airplane, every seat has a row number and
- 8:27a letter on it. Row one is at the front,
- 8:30followed by Row two, and all the way back until
- 8:32you run out of the plane. The letters start with
- 8:35A on the left side of the plane and then
- 8:37follow the alphabet across the seats to the right. There
- 8:41are three seats in every row on their plane. Rowan
- 8:43sits in the middle seat next to his mom in
- 8:47one row, while Sophia sits next to the aisle. On
- 8:50the other side of the aisle, Rowan looks at the
- 8:53other passenger still boarding and wonders where they come from.
- 8:57Sophia and Rowan want to read their books during the flight,
- 9:00so they put their bipicks underneath the seats in front
- 9:02of them. Their parents plan on taking a long nap
- 9:05as soon as the plane takes off, so they lift
- 9:08their bags into the overhead binds so they're out of
- 9:11the way. Once everyone has taken their seats, it's time
- 9:15for the safety demonstration. Flight attendant Xeon shows all the
- 9:19passengers how the crew keep them safe on board. After
- 9:23pointing out the nearest emergency exits, Xeon demonstrates how to
- 9:29use the seat belts. The airplane seatbelt is different from
- 9:32car seat belts, so Rowan has to practice a couple
- 9:35of times. There you go, rowing, You've got it, says
- 9:40his mom up in the clouds. Just like Sophia and Rowan,
- 9:45Melinda and or dads have just boarded their plane. Once
- 9:48the doors are closed, the airplane is ready to go.
- 9:51When an aeroplane moves on the ground, it's called taxiing. Melinda,
- 9:55who was at first nervous for a trip, is now
- 9:57excited to see the world from the sky. She watches
- 10:00out the window as the airplane taxis passed the air
- 10:04traffic control tower and the fire station. Captain Crewe Ready
- 10:09for take off, says Captain Sally over the loud speaker.
- 10:14The engines start to spin really fast and make a
- 10:17loud noise, and the plane accelerates forward. They whizz down
- 10:21the runway and then up, up, up they go. Melinda's
- 10:24pushed back into her seat, just like being on a ride.
- 10:28The airplane makes a big turn after it takes off,
- 10:31and Melinda spots the airport. Look, daddy, there it is.
- 10:35After the airplane finishes climbing, it levels off at what
- 10:38is called the cruising altitude, usually around thirty five thousand
- 10:42feet up in the sky. Everyone settles down for the flight,
- 10:46but first it's time for dinner. Flight Attendant Natalie rows
- 10:49the cart down the aisle chicken her pasta, which would
- 10:52you prefer? Natalie then hands the passengers their meals on
- 10:57one of the trays that was carefully prepared early by
- 11:00the catering team. Prepare for landing. On a different flight,
- 11:05Captain Monica and her career about to land at our
- 11:08airport after a long journey. Flight attendant Rocksanne walks through
- 11:12the plane, reminding anyone who has reclined their seats to
- 11:15put them back and upright, and to put away all
- 11:18the trade tables. She also make sure everyone's seatbelts are
- 11:21fastened and that all bags have been put away, either
- 11:24into the overhead bins or underneath the seats in front
- 11:27of each passenger. In the flight deck, Captain monicaan first
- 11:31Officer aChn, concentrate on landing the plane. They're using all
- 11:36their skills and experience to fly the airplane smoothly, lower
- 11:39and lower toward the airport. Air Traffic controllers tell them
- 11:43which direction to fly in and when to make turns
- 11:46seal the plane lines up with correct runway. In the distance,
- 11:49they spot the runway lights, which helped them judge how
- 11:52far away the airport is and how high they're flying.
- 11:55Just before landing, an automatic system called a radio outem
- 12:00meter calls out how high they are in feet fifty
- 12:04forty thirty twenty. As they crossed the near end of
- 12:07the runway, they reduce power on the engines and they're
- 12:10playing floats to the ground with a little bump time
- 12:13for the brakes. And here we are. Good job team.
- 12:17Passport Control. When you fly a different country, you have
- 12:21to pass through a checkpoint which is called passport control.
- 12:25This is where immigration officers make sure everyone is who
- 12:28they say they are. The airport is very busy today.
- 12:31There's a line of recently land at passengers. The zigzags
- 12:35all the way down the immigration hall, just like a
- 12:37huge worm. At the checkpoint, you either show your passport
- 12:41to immigration officer or you use an electronic gate that
- 12:44scans your passport. May just derived from Legos in Nigeria.
- 12:50She's incredibly tired, but happy to have arrived. She hands
- 12:54her passport to Kevin, an immigration officer. Kevin checks every
- 12:58passenger's passport, looks it up in the computer system, and
- 13:02sometimes as question about their troop. Once he's happy, he
- 13:05stamps their passport and waves them through. Now Key just
- 13:09arrived from Tokyo in Japan. He uses the electronic gate,
- 13:13where the line is a lot shorter. He holds the
- 13:15photo page of his passport on the scanner and looks
- 13:18into the automatic camera. A picture appears on the screen
- 13:22and numbers count three two one flash. The gate uses
- 13:27facial recognition technology to scan this picture and confirm is
- 13:31no key. Success, The screen shows the key a green arrow.
- 13:37The gate opens and he walks through to go to
- 13:39find his luggage. Where's my bag? Did you check a
- 13:44large bag before your flight? If you did, it will
- 13:47reappear in the baggage claim care seal belt usually about
- 13:51thirty minutes or so after your plane pulls up to
- 13:54the gate. You can't see them, but baggage loaders are
- 13:57working as quickly as they can to unload your back
- 14:00from the plane. Drive them to the terminal and put
- 14:03them on the right care soul belt where everyone is
- 14:05waiting for their bags. The Caro soul belt slowly wind
- 14:10around and around so everyone can get their luggage. Matilda
- 14:13just derived from a beach vacation. She's not prepared for
- 14:16the cold weather here and quickly looks for a sweater.
- 14:20She still needs to pick up her surfboard. People check
- 14:23all sorts of luggage. Can you help Matilda find her surfboard? Oh? No,
- 14:30Murphy's suitcase didn't arrive. Sometimes the luggage gets left behind
- 14:34at the departure airport. Murphy goes to the lost luggage desk,
- 14:38where Peter asks him some question questions, what color is it,
- 14:43How big is it? Does it have wheels? And if so,
- 14:46how many? Peter puts all this information to the computer,
- 14:50and luckily he finds Murphy's bag. Peter apologizes and requests
- 14:54for it to be put on the next flight. Murphy's
- 14:57bag will then be delivered straight to his hotel hell
- 15:01reuniting with friends and family. Once you pass through the
- 15:04final doors to the arrivals area, your journey through the
- 15:08airport is complete. Here family and friends might be waiting
- 15:12to welcome you. Is that someone's dad waiting with flowers?
- 15:15Can you spot the driver ready to take the business
- 15:18woman to an important meeting? Oh? Look, that family has
- 15:21just reunited after a long time. In the arrivals area,
- 15:25you also find all sorts of ways to continue on
- 15:27your journey, even if someone hasn't come to collect you.
- 15:30Perhaps there's a train you need to rush to, or
- 15:33maybe you'll take the bus to reach some friends in
- 15:36the city. Wait, is that you know that famous actor
- 15:40from that blockbuster movie? All kinds of people fly through
- 15:43the airport, and sometimes that includes big stars. Did you
- 15:47see anybody famous on your trip? No pictures, please, says
- 15:52the actor's bodyguard as they make their way past the
- 15:56paparazzi nighttime at the airport. At most airports there aren't
- 16:02many flights taking off or landing late at night, but
- 16:05the airport never goes to sleep. With fewer flights, there
- 16:08are fewer people needed to send them where they need
- 16:11to go. Air Traffic controller Trixie waves good night to
- 16:14her colleagues who have arrived for their night ships. Other
- 16:18parts of the airport are still buzzing with activity. The
- 16:21maintenance hangar planes are being checked and repaired. At the gates,
- 16:25Mechanics and technicians check that every seatbelt and in flight
- 16:29movie screen is working properly on every airplane. Cleaners replace
- 16:35things such as pillows and blankets ready for the first
- 16:38flights in the morning. In the terminal, how they are
- 16:43closes up a cafe for the night. In just a
- 16:45few hours, eager passengers will be lining up for their
- 16:49morning coffees. Oliver cleans up a mess on the floor
- 16:52so nobody slips on it. While security guard Janus patrols
- 16:57the halls and waving good night to their cages. Pilots
- 17:01Monica and Aiken head home for the night. Outside, it
- 17:04gets quieter and quieter. The airport is waiting for tomorrow,
- 17:08when new passengers will arrive to start a brand new day.
- 17:14Our next story is called Construction Site Taking Flight and
- 17:20it was published by Chronicle Books, has a copyright year
- 17:23of twenty twenty three and it was written by Sherry
- 17:27Dusky Wrinker. Six truck friends are on their way to
- 17:32start a brand new job. Today. They're off to work
- 17:35and feeling strong. But traffic's slow. The lines are long.
- 17:40They can barely row at all. This whole airport is
- 17:44way too small. Everyone must sit and wait on streets,
- 17:47on runways at the gate, and everyone is running late.
- 17:51There should be a bigger road to handle all this
- 17:53traffic low. The airport should be bigger, too, so everyone
- 17:57can zip right through. This will be one massive mission.
- 18:01Build a big airport. Addition, so many trucks they've never
- 18:06seen in awesome airplanes in between. They wave hello, and
- 18:11then they're gone. No one slows or stops for long.
- 18:15The airport's an exciting place. The ground crew keeps a
- 18:18speedy's pace. There's a lot for them to do. Construction
- 18:23trucks get busy too. First excavator starts to row. He
- 18:28digs and scoops to make a hoe, a huge foundation
- 18:32wide and deep, and a giant soul soil heap loader
- 18:37joins the team today and dump trunk calls the dirt away.
- 18:42A chetplane flies in from the sky, touches down and
- 18:45lands nearby. She slowly taxes to her marks, pulls right in,
- 18:50then stops and parks. That loader pulls up to the
- 18:53side and loads the luggage get a ride. She takes
- 18:57suitcases off the plane. Then all the baggage train now
- 19:02here comes tractor off to tow the luggage where it
- 19:06needs to go. Bulldoze or ribs and pushes strong and
- 19:10clears the path two miles long. Cement mixer pours some
- 19:14fresh concrete. Then it spreads out all nice and neat,
- 19:17with more runways for planes to land. Their airport's starting
- 19:21to expand. Hydrant dispenser fulls fuel tanks. The grateful airplanes
- 19:27all say thanks. Tug pulls a plane away to tech.
- 19:31It's time for this one's maintenance check. In the sky
- 19:35and on the ground, there are airplanes all around. While
- 19:39airplanes wait their turns to fly, the trucks keep working
- 19:43hard nearby. When this job is finally done, no more
- 19:46delays for everyone. Cargo plane is taking flight hauling tons
- 19:51with strength and might. Now Rubble removal machine is getting
- 19:56runways nice and clean, rolling spinning with his scrub erase
- 20:00an airplane tire rubber. He polishes the landing strip to
- 20:04help make sure that planes won't slip. Jumbo jets trip
- 20:11is beginning. She takes off with fan blade spinning. Crane
- 20:14truck sees her flying past. He's nearly finished here at last.
- 20:19While crane truck's lifting loads today, Lift truck works too,
- 20:23not far away. She drives right in and stops before
- 20:26she lifts up to the airplane door. Crane truck sees
- 20:30what she can do. I see you like to lift
- 20:34things too. Skid steer carries heavy stacks. She rows on
- 20:39wheels or on tracks with attachments for each shore she
- 20:43can lift and push and more. Her grapple helps her
- 20:47houla being. She works so hard to help the team.
- 20:50Everyone is on the go when suddenly it starts to snow,
- 20:54an unexpected springtime storm. Quickly, snow drifts start to form,
- 20:59and soon the snow is really high. The runways covered,
- 21:03planes can't fly. Snow removal team let's row. They all
- 21:08line up to take control. Snowplows gather then attack with
- 21:13sweepers whirling round and back, and here come the mighty blowers.
- 21:17Awesome roaring snow drift throwers. Now tankers all row in
- 21:22and spray some stuff that melts the ice away, and
- 21:25at last runways clear. This job is done. The airplanes cheer.
- 21:31Construction trucks then lend a hand so ground crew trucks
- 21:35can work as planned. De icing truck now clears the
- 21:38snow and ice from planes so they can go. She
- 21:42lifts her boom into the sky. She aims and set
- 21:45the pressure high with spraat layers flasting at full power.
- 21:50Planes get a de icing shower from those to tell
- 21:54she sprays each one. The sky's clear. As the last
- 21:57plane's done. This project was a soaring feet and now
- 22:01this giant job's complete. The airport crew all wave goodbye. Thanks.
- 22:07Now we can really fly, So another workday ins. These
- 22:11teams were strangers, now they're friends. While playing lights twinkle overhead.
- 22:18Hard working trucks roll into bed, drive off to sleep
- 22:21and dream of flight. Good work, big trucks, now sh
- 22:27good night. Our next story is about going to the beach,
- 22:31and it's titled a Beach Tale. It was published by
- 22:38Boyd Mills Press, Incorporated. It's a copyright yer of twenty
- 22:42ten and it was written by Karen Lynn Williams. Swish Swosh.
- 22:50Gregory drew a lion in the sand, a sea lion,
- 22:54dead ass, a sandy lion. Gregory said, Sandy needs a tale,
- 22:59said Dad. Gregory picked up his sturdy drawing stick. Don't
- 23:03go in the water, and don't leave Sandy. Dad said,
- 23:06I won't, said Gregory. Dad sat down on the dolphintail
- 23:10under the blue umbrella. Swish swosh. Gregory drew a tail.
- 23:15He did not go in the water, and he did
- 23:17not leave Sandy. Sandy's tail got longer until Gregory came
- 23:22to a purple jellyfish. He made a loop around the
- 23:25gooey blop. So did Sandy's tail. Swish swosh. Gregory came
- 23:31to the mound, but an old castle washed smooth by
- 23:35the waves. He went up and over and down. So
- 23:38did Sandy's tail. But Gregory did not go in the water,
- 23:41and he did not leave Sandy. Sandy's tail got longer
- 23:47until Gregory came to horseshoe crab. He made a big
- 23:50zig and then a zag around that old crab's pointer
- 23:54Sandy's tail went zig zag too swish swosh. Gregory came
- 23:59to a giant high Gregory went down and up, so
- 24:02did Sandy's tail. Sandy's till got longer until Gregory saw
- 24:07a tiny ghost crab scurring sideways into his dark round hoe.
- 24:12Gregory went round and round the hoe. Sandy's tail went
- 24:15round and round two. But Gregory did not go in
- 24:18the water and he did not leave Sandy. Swish swoosh.
- 24:23Gregory wrote his name g R E G. Sandy's tail
- 24:27got longer. Suddenly, a wave snuck up onto the sand.
- 24:31It tickled Gregory's toes. Gregory jumped back and traced the
- 24:35Lacey wavy line. Sandy's tail made a wavy line two,
- 24:40but Gregory did not go in the water and he
- 24:42did not leave Sandy. Swish swoosh. Sandy's tail got longer
- 24:47until Gregory came to Jetty. He heard a loud roar.
- 24:51Gregory looked up. A giant wave crashed on the rocks.
- 24:54The spray flashed Gregory. He turned around to look for Dad. Ooh,
- 25:00oh what now, swish swoosh. Gregory followed Sandy's tail. He
- 25:05followed the wavy line swish swoosh. He traced his name,
- 25:10his nickname backward g e rg. He went around and
- 25:14around the deep dark ghost crab hoe. Swish swoosh. He
- 25:20went down into the giant hoe and up again, zagging
- 25:23and zig. He went around the horseshoe crabs pointer. Ooho.
