- 5:53Well, any business this morning? Ain't you no? Nothing interesting?
- 5:57Some bills and circulars and silly letter Skip the bills? Circular is? What's
- 6:00the letters say? Oh it's nothing you'd be interested in? George? Oh
- 6:03angel, my curious? Oh all right here it is, dear mister Valentine.
- 6:11Yesterday I was practically ready to blow the lid. Off the city today.
- 6:15I can't do it unless you feel strongly enough about integrity and government to
- 6:18get back some evidence that was stolen from me. If you're interested into job
- 6:23after regular fee, please come to my office as won as possible. Some
- 6:27screwball, forget it. Let her head the Iron Hat Restaurant, signed Robert
- 6:30Cornelius. Cornelius, that's right, you know him. That should funny thing.
- 6:36That name was integrated in the conversation when my last caller was here.
- 6:42No, i'll see you later, brook See, I'm going to meet the
- 6:43owner of the Iron Hat. Okay, mister Cornelius, let's start from scratch.
- 7:00I know you own one of the most famous restaurants in town, and
- 7:02I know you're sort of a crusader for clean government, so let's take it
- 7:06from there. Well, rather, let's get right to the point, Valentine.
- 7:11Up until yesterday I had in my safe documented proof of more graft and
- 7:15corruption than you'd believe possible. Up until yesterday. That's right, that before
- 7:18last somebody broke into this office, opened the safe and got away with some
- 7:23very important papers. Huh did you report it? No? And for a
- 7:27very good reason. There are some big names involved. If they put the
- 7:31wrong men in the case i'd get nowhere. Yeah, yeah, I see
- 7:33what you mean. Tell me, mister Cornnis, who has access to that
- 7:36safe beside yourself? Only two people GJ. That's g J Osborne, my
- 7:42partner and my secretary. I'm sorry, I didn't know there was someone in
- 7:47you wrong. Oh, that's all right. I was just talking about you,
- 7:50my dear, about me. Yea Valentine. This is Alice Medill,
- 7:55my secretary. But the Valentine was here about the theft. Tellus, Oh,
- 8:00yes, Do do you think you'd be able to do anything about it,
- 8:03mister Valentine, I don't know. I got the idea of yourself,
- 8:05mister Madilan. No, I guess whatever was taken was quite important, mister
- 8:11Cornelius. It was in a large Manila envious. Yes, that's right,
- 8:13but you see, Valentine, they didn't get quite as much as they might
- 8:16have. No, why not a lot of envelope held on a part of
- 8:20my evidence the rest? Yes, I understand. Well, thank you,
- 8:22miss Madill. I'll want to have a little talk with you later. Yes,
- 8:26all right, mister Valentine. I'll tell the manthon the need company to
- 8:30wait. Mister Cornelian. Oh yes, sir, please do Alice, Well,
- 8:35you somehow act as though you suspected Elisa Valentine. I don't think you
- 8:39need sorry, I just suspect everybody, that's all. Yes, of course
- 8:43I understand. Matter of fact, I've already got a lead to go on.
- 8:46Will you have, yeah, something you wouldn't know about? Tell me,
- 8:50mister Cornelius, what were some names mentioned in those documents that were stolen?
- 8:54Well, a few police officers, some public officials who've been playing the
- 8:58game for their own profit. A gangster named Harger. Wait a minute,
- 9:01Wait a minute, say that last one again. Oh wouldn't you wouldn't know
- 9:05the man? He isn't a type whose name appears in the papers, but
- 9:07he runs more rackets in this that. Didn't you believe possible? The name
- 9:11was Harger? Yeah, yeah, that's what I thought you said. So
- 9:15wait, you know him? Unfortunately, Yes, yes, I've run into
- 9:18him a couple of times. Did he know you had this evidence? He
- 9:22must have suspected it is? Why? Because now I think I see where
- 9:26they stand on your case, mister Cornelius. A very unpleasant character who looked
- 9:31like one of Harger's hoodlum's called on me this morning. But well, how
- 9:35did he know that you had written to me? Well, that's what I'd
- 9:37like to find out, and it seems to me there's no better time to
- 9:39do it than right now. Just a minute, justin and what have you?
- 10:01Yeah? Hello, I game mind if I come in here? Oh?
- 10:05What can I say? It seems you already have Yeah, that's right.
- 10:09Let me see you would be Valentine, George Valentine, I believed good
- 10:15memory? Yes, thank you? Well what can I do for you?
- 10:18And I'm having it's the other way around. One of your hood's dropped in
- 10:22to suggest that I stay away from the Bob Cornelius case. But oh,
- 10:28you must be mistaken, Valentine. I don't even know what you mean.
- 10:31Well, then perhaps I've better make it plain. How would you like to
- 10:33have your boy picked up for assault with a deadly weapon? And how would
- 10:37you like to be mixed up in a case of breaking and entering burglar?
- 10:41Now just a minute, young man, if you're trying some kind of black
- 10:43what if you hire to take some papers out of Cornelius as safe higger?
- 10:46And where are they now? Really, Valentine, this is getting to be
- 10:50amusing. You seem to have forgotten I'm an honest business man. I run
- 10:54the bowling alley out there, the cocktail bar. Alright, skip that.
- 10:58I just thought you'd like to save yourself a little trouble, that's all,
- 11:01you see. I happen to have a little souvenir right here. Oh a
- 11:07gun. Hell, you'd better not start at anything. Oh, no worry,
- 11:09it's not loaded. I took out all the bullets. But I thought
- 11:13you're lackey might like to have it back. Yes, I see what you
- 11:16mean. Silly of them to leave it, wasn't it, Cedric? Sure
- 11:20you don't want to trade it for some papers. I don't make trades.
- 11:22Valentine. I think you ascertained me byes. Yes, Cedric, you know
- 11:28this, gentleman. I believe. Hey, it's a Valentine exactly. He
- 11:33was kind enough to bring back the gun you so carelessly left in his office.
- 11:37Oh in a minute, if you think I'm in case he feels like
- 11:41changing his mind, Cedric, I have him covered. Y. Yeah you're
- 11:43okay, boss, Come on, big boy Pierce up over. Ah,
- 11:48yeah, my mind. How brave you are when your boss is holding a
- 11:52gun. I should give me the gun certainly sure here that is the idea
- 11:56of Valentine. And I believe our little into yours now over is for now?
- 12:01Yes? Or what possible reason would we have for continuing it? You've
- 12:05gained nothing? Oh but I have, huggin Ye. I wasn't all sure
- 12:09when I came in here that you engineered the theft of those papers, And
- 12:11now you think you are sure. I'm afraid you'll have a hard time proving
- 12:16that, Valentine, I like it that way. I want one more thing,
- 12:20Hugger, is you might be interested to know that you've got only part
- 12:22of the papers. Wait a minute, why is she and took by e
- 12:28Creedric? Go on, Valentine, all right, if you're going to look
- 12:31for them, they won't be and Cornelius is safe any deals from now on?
- 12:35You take up with me, Yes, George. It doesn't like you
- 12:58to stop for lunch when you're on a job. Well, I had to
- 13:01kill a few minutes. Mr Cornelius wasn't in his office back there. The
- 13:03secretary said he'd be back in half an hour. Oh but even if you're
- 13:07so sure, harder had somebody steal those papers? What good's it gonna do
- 13:11to see Cornelius again. I didn't want to tell his secretary, just in
- 13:15case she was mixed up in this thing some way. But I'm going to
- 13:18have him give the rest to me. You are well, won't they try
- 13:22to get them from you? I hope? So then we'll have something definite
- 13:26to work on. Okay, let's get back to Cornelius's office. I'm worried,
- 13:43George. Yeah, why answer? Well, if they're so desperate to
- 13:46get those papers, something might happened to you. I'll be ready for Hi,
- 13:48don't worry. Here we are. Hm, that's funny, no answer.
- 13:56Maybe the secretary has gone out and he isn't back yet. Yeah,
- 14:00I may as well when inside cyhead Angel after you, my, this is
- 14:05a nice brooksy. What's the matter over there by the safe George, Alice
- 14:11McDill the secretary? Wait, there is no no, but I don't know
- 14:20why not. Somebody really let her have it with that lead pipe. We
- 14:24do shut the door and then called Lieutenant Johnson on the phone. This isn't
- 14:26a case for him yet, but it's liable to be if we don't get
- 14:30her to a hospital. In just a moment. We'll return to to Night's
- 14:48adventure. Of George Valentine. Did you ever stop to consider that the cost
- 14:54of operating your car depends a great deal on the motor oil you use.
- 14:58It's true, and it's one of the main reasons why most motorists here in
- 15:03the West prefer heavy duty RPM motor oil that doubles engine life the time between
- 15:09major overhauls due to lubrication. Yes, we claim heavy duty RPM compared to
- 15:15premium type oils as designated by the American Petroleum Institute, doubles engine life.
- 15:20Actual performance tests prove it. For instance, taxicabs operated by Tenor Motor Tours
- 15:26of Las Vegas, Nevada, used to average only thirty five thousand miles between
- 15:31overhauls. Today, with heavy duty RPM, these same cabs travel one hundred
- 15:37thousand miles before overhauling. Develop through atomic research, RPM was tested in the
- 15:43laboratories, proved in actual road tests even in the tough daily grind of taxicab
- 15:48operation. Heavy duty RPM stood the test more than doubled engine life. So
- 15:56remember these facts when you buy oil for top protection and top economy of operations.
- 16:02Switch over now to heavy duty RPM motor oil at independent Chevron gas stations
- 16:07and standard stations where they say and mean, we take better care of your
- 16:14car. Now back to tonight's adventure. George Valentine, you suddenly find yourself
- 16:37on a case that you've been warned to forget even before it's been offered to
- 16:41you. You've definitely found out that a big time gangster named Harger was behind
- 16:47the theft of valuable documents from a safe in the Iron Hat restaurant, But
- 16:52you haven't expected to find a girl slugged senseless and the rest of the papers
- 16:56missing. If your name is George Valentine, wait impatiently at Robert Cornelius's office
- 17:02for Lieutenant Johnson to finish your phone call. Cheersn't eh? Okay, see
- 17:07that the policewoman is in her room at all times. She ever regains consciousness,
- 17:11get a statement post two officers outside the room. Yeah, call me
- 17:17when anything happens. Okay, she's still alive, isn't she, Lieutenant?
- 17:22Yes, if you can call it that bad concussion. They're working on her.
- 17:26What's the matter with your identification? Boys? They dusted that lead pipe
- 17:30in a safe an hour ago. What do you think they do? Valentine?
- 17:32Worked miracles takes time. Yeah, by the way, how'd you get
- 17:37mixed up in their sing? Cornelius sent for me after the first bunch of
- 17:41stuff was stolen. I was going to take the rest until he cleared it
- 17:45up, except somebody beats you to it. Where's Cornelius now? Well he
- 17:49seems to have disappeared. Yeah, yeah, got any idea who might have
- 17:53pulled this job? Sure? Sure, I have Johnson? Have I heard
- 17:56of a council named Cedric uses big words in the wrong places? Cedric Gallen
- 18:02the professor? And you do? Sure? Sure? Small time Wood.
- 18:04We've had him in for questioning time at the time, Judge, you mean
- 18:07the same one who came in the office is the same Brook? So you
- 18:10see Johnson's Wait a minute, I'll get it. Hello Johnson speaking, Yeah,
- 18:17yeah, what'd you get you? What? Yes? I heard you
- 18:22at that Kendrick. Oh never mind, Okay, I'll call you back.
- 18:26What was the tenant notification? Bar fingerprints? Check with the Cedric character?
- 18:32No, I can't understand it. Now'll make it all sure, Sure,
- 18:34we gotta make all right. The prints on the safe and that length of
- 18:37piper Hargard. Are you positive the boys are nice clean prints? A perfect
- 18:45thumb and forefinger. No, question. Well, I don't have the big
- 18:48shot picked. I don't want him in a win a minute. Maybe this
- 18:49isn't smart Johnson yet? No, why not? Oh there's something very fishy
- 18:55about this. You know as well as I do that Hagga doesn't go in
- 18:57for this sort of thing. Oh what about the prince a chest? Might
- 19:00be that somebody's framing hagger you know, somebody who works for him, maybe
- 19:04Valentine. Sometimes I think you'll read too many detective stories the pipe. Maybe,
- 19:10But how about to say, okay, okay, go ahead, have
- 19:12harg I picked up if you want to. I got another attack to work
- 19:15on. George, where are you going? My friend Cedric paid a call
- 19:18on me this morning. I'm gonna get his address from the ident Bureau and
- 19:21return it. Well address you got from the files, George? Yeah,
- 19:40okay, you'll stay behind the wheel, Brooks hen keep the motor running.
- 19:41I'll be out in a minute. Oh that's a horrible looking place, George.
- 19:47Please be care He's sure, I'll be careful. This won't take long.
- 19:56Yeah, who's that? Got a message? Cedric? Yeah? Well
- 20:02Cedric eight here, he just left. Won't be back for a while,
- 20:04That's all right, I'll come in and wait. Hey, wait a minute,
- 20:07what do you think you're trying to do? Push your way in the
- 20:07here? Friss? I'm sure? Who are you? I'm Cedric's wife.
- 20:11I want to make something out of it. Hey, I've never seen you
- 20:15before. That's my loss. Shut the door. I look high, ain't
- 20:18you? What are you doing with a gun? Just encouraging you to shut
- 20:23the door. Yeah, okay, Cedric won't like this. It'll be our
- 20:30secret. You'll never know how long has your husband been gone? Missus?
- 20:34Alan, isn't it? That's none of your business? Hey? Look are
- 20:38you a cut? Of course not? Cedric and I have some business dealings.
- 20:44A nice place you have here? Mind if I look around with a
- 20:52gun pointing at me? Thanks? Hey, you better keep out of that
- 20:55drawer for Cedric wouldn't like it. I know, sail. You could help
- 21:02me though, if you'd tell me. Just n nothing to you. Valentine,
- 21:07Oh Cedric, I didn't hear you come in? He busted his way
- 21:10in the doss Cedric I tried to get him shot up. Maggie wrapped the
- 21:12gun shummish. Well, no, I don't know why I showed. That
- 21:18is just the influence you. I got bullets in this right against see now
- 21:22to wrap the gun? Plug it? Yeah, that sounds reasonable. All
- 21:29right, that's showing you'm instinct not get up? All right? All right?
- 21:33But first tell me, Cedric, why didn't you have to hit that
- 21:36poor girl so hard? She might not live? You know, I don't
- 21:38can see what you're talking about. Get him out of here, Cedric.
- 21:41He makes me nervous. Maggie, I told you to keep quiet. That's
- 21:45one more thing, Cedric. Don't you think it's dangerous to double across a
- 21:48big shot like Higa. I ain't double cross nobody, see now like a
- 21:55ship. Get out? Thanks, I will see And Jill, oh boy,
- 22:03George, are you all right? He went in me. Yeah,
- 22:06I'm all right, angel, except on mine is a perfectly good gun.
- 22:10Yeah, I know, just Cedric showing off. Come on, let's go.
- 22:12I'm all right, darling headquarters. I gotta have a few words.
- 22:15But Lieutenant Johnson go ahead and books alright, Hi Johnson? Ellis what are
- 22:33you doing here? Harl I thought I might help you a little. What's
- 22:37got you in this? Move? Harger? What's he done? Now?
- 22:40Lieutenant Plenty got him picked up on the basis of those fingerprints. Yeah,
- 22:44and no sooner got him booked than his mouthpiece came in. Harger's got a
- 22:47perfect alibi, slapped a half million dollars suit on the city for false arrest,
- 22:51defamation to carry And I was afraid he might do that. I warned
- 22:53you didn't I yeah, yeah, but what could I do? Harger's fingerprints
- 22:56on the murder weapon? You mean the middle girls? Day, No,
- 23:00matter of fact, she's better still unconscious. Well maybe we won't need her
- 23:04statement if you'll stop being so know at all and do what I tell you
- 23:07to day. Yeah, yeah, sure, get a man when he's done
- 23:11just trying to help you, that's all. Now. First, don't let
- 23:15Huggard go. Keep him locked out of that liable so we can wash that
- 23:18out too. Then have the death Sension called Cedric Allen. Tell him Huggers
- 23:22and Jayla wants to see him. If he hasn't got a phone, have
- 23:23him bring him in. Yeah, yeah, doesn't make sense. And let
- 23:27me talk to your lab man who did the make on those fingerprints. George.
- 23:30It doesn't make any sense to me either, I know, I know,
- 23:33it sounds pretty mixed up, doesn't I'm just playing on hunch, hunch.
- 23:37We're in trouble enough already, and you're playing our hunts. Don't lurry
- 23:40Johnson. And to something I saw on Cedric's house this morning. This is
- 23:42a hunch that'll pay off. Thank you very long too. Oh you again?
- 24:03Yeah, I came back something I forgot your gun? Oh yeah,
- 24:07that's right. It wasn't what I had in mind, but i'll take that
- 24:11too. Where is it? I don't know? Oh, yes you do.
- 24:15I hate to treat a lady like this on my risk. You how
- 24:18that hurts? How is that gun? I'm not telling it all right?
- 24:23That table drawer fine? Thanks? Right? A place that table drawer?
- 24:30When you get everything I need right there? What do you mean? Oh?
- 24:33I'm just taking along something I saw on my last visit. These gloves.
- 24:37You can't take those gloves. You can't what I can, Maggie.
- 24:41I'll stand back like Cedric would say. I don't want to have to plug
- 24:45it. How are you gonna do it? Oh? Yeah, that's what
- 24:48I thought. I said. What are you gonna do these? Oh?
- 24:52Just keep it for souping ears? Why do I use your phone? Thanks?
- 24:56I appreciate your hospitality, Maggie. I'm sure Cedric will too, and
- 25:00mister Higger. Hello Johnson, Yeah, that's right, Cedric, get there
- 25:07yet. You're gonna get us in all this. Don't worry Johnson. Everything's
- 25:11all right. Yeah, I wish I thought so. When Cedric finds out
- 25:15that Hagger didn't send for all I know, I know that's what I called
- 25:18about, don't let Cedric leave there. Put him under technical arrest until I
- 25:22get back, and hang on to Higger too. You'll have enough on both
- 25:25of them to send them up. Hang on to Brooksie too, in a
- 25:26nice way, that is. And when we've washed this up, I'm going
- 25:30to take it to dinner. All right, Valentine. You wanted the floor,
- 25:42You've got it. And if you're wrong, I'm not. I'm not.
- 25:45I wasn't quite sure before, but now I know. Cedric. Yeah,
- 25:49what over in the receiving hospital is a girl on the point of death
- 25:53because you slugged the too hide. What do you mean you got nothing on
- 25:57me? Maybe Hag, but not on me. I thought you'd try and
- 26:02right out like that, save your own skin. That scheme Hagger cooked up?
- 26:06Backfire, Valentine, what's all the ass find Hagger's fingerprints on the safe
- 26:10and the lead pipe. Johnson, But he wasn't there when the safe was
- 26:14opened or when miss McDill was slut was He said me, sure he was.
- 26:18He had to be a fiss print. Hager had a great scheme to
- 26:21get some papers he wanted and to sup aliable at the same time. He
- 26:25knew his princes would be in that office, and he knew he'd have a
- 26:27perfect alibar. George, change, explain it to us. I guess these
- 26:32will explain best Brook scene. But just a pair of rubber gloves, plastic
- 26:37gloves to be exact, with exact reproductions of Hagger's fingerprints on the thumbs and
- 26:41four fingers. You check this with I'm just came from that Johnson, all
- 26:45right, looks like you're going to be with us for quite a while.
- 26:48Edric, why'd you do it? She wouldn't open the shape. I mean,
- 26:52I don't know. I hate that's an pluck came out, sergeant,
- 26:56and thanks for the assists, Valentine and at all Johnson. I'm glad to
- 27:00be of help. But George, how did you ever know a pair of
- 27:03plain tlastic gloves would be important? Got friendly with a fingerprint bure O Engel,
- 27:07tell you pull it over a bull of soup before you buy another gallon
- 27:18of gasoline. Consider these facts. Any gasoline can be made to stress one
- 27:25feature at the expense of others. But Chevern Supreme Gasoline gives you the correct
- 27:29balance of all eight high performance qualities, and every one of these qualities is
- 27:33necessary for top performance quick starting, smooth acceleration, anti knock, vaporlock prevention,
- 27:41fast warm up, full power, area, blending, and economy mileage.
- 27:47So shift to the gas with all eight. Ask for Chevern Supreme gasoline
- 27:51at standard stations or independent Chevron gas stations where they say and mean we take
- 27:56better care of your car. George M. Good soup. What did you
- 28:14say, Roxy? You never told me how you figured out that fingerprint thing?
- 28:18Simple reasoning. Angel. I got to thinking after I saw that pair
- 28:21of plastic gloves at Cedric's place. So I went to the boys who made
- 28:25the identity. And that was a pretty heavy length of lead pipe, but
- 28:27the only princes on it were from the thumb and the forefinger. Oh what
- 28:32did that prove? Well? Justin nobody could swing the pipe heard enough to
- 28:34knock somebody out with just a thumb and finger. Oh. Yeah, that's
- 28:38right. You see, with just those prints, Cedric would never be caught,
- 28:41but Hagger would. But he prove an alibi, sue the city,
- 28:45and still have the papers he wanted. Oh no, I see, but
- 28:48mister Cornelius still hasn't gotten his papers back, or he'll have them back in
- 28:52an hour. Cedric spilled everything. They're hidden in his house, and he'll
- 28:55probably get a life, you know, Darling, as clever as you are
- 29:00to bad some nice girl can't be with you all the time. Get the
- 29:04benefit of it. Oh sure, but that's life, no George. Tonight's
