  good

• 3:04
  Hey,
• 3:04
  good
• 3:04
  evening.
• 3:05
  It's
• 3:05
  great
• 3:05
  to
• 3:05
  be
• 3:05
  talking
• 3:06
  to
• 3:06
  you
• 3:06
  Tonight.
• 3:06
  Bill,
• 3:07
  great
• 3:07
  to
• 3:07
  have
• 3:07
  you
• 3:08
  with
• 3:08
  us.
• 3:08
  Ken,
• 3:08
  now,
• 3:09
  growing
• 3:09
  up
• 3:09
  in
• 3:09
  Michigan,
• 3:10
  who
• 3:10
  were
• 3:11
  your
• 3:11
  sports
• 3:11
  heroes
• 3:12
  and
• 3:12
  your
• 3:12
  favorite
• 3:12
  teams
• 3:13
  back
• 3:13
  when
• 3:13
  you
• 3:13
  were
• 3:13
  a
• 3:13
  kid?
• 3:16
  Well,
• 3:16
  I
• 3:16
  guess
• 3:17
  most
• 3:17
  people
• 3:17
  would
• 3:17
  probably
• 3:18
  think
• 3:18
  it
• 3:18
  might
• 3:19
  have
• 3:19
  been
• 3:19
  the
• 3:19
  Detroit
• 3:19
  Red
• 3:20
  Wings,
• 3:20
  but
• 3:21
  we
• 3:21
  actually
• 3:21
  called
• 3:22
  them
• 3:22
  the
• 3:22
  Dead
• 3:22
  Wings
• 3:23
  back
• 3:23
  in
• 3:23
  those
• 3:23
  days
• 3:24
  because
• 3:24
  they
• 3:24
  weren't
• 3:25
  a
• 3:25
  very
• 3:26
  good
• 3:26
  team
• 3:27
  back
• 3:27
  in
• 3:27
  the
• 3:28
  70s
• 3:28
  and
• 3:29
  early
• 3:29
  80s.
• 3:30
  But
• 3:31
  I
• 3:32
  guess,
• 3:33
  you
• 3:33
  know,
• 3:34
  I
• 3:34
  grew
• 3:34
  up
• 3:36
  skating
• 3:36
  on
• 3:37
  a
• 3:37
  backyard
• 3:37
  rink.
• 3:38
  My
• 3:38
  dad
• 3:38
  got
• 3:39
  my
• 3:39
  brother
• 3:39
  and
• 3:39
  I
• 3:39
  started.
• 3:40
  I
• 3:40
  wouldn't
• 3:41
  say
• 3:41
  that
• 3:41
  I,
• 3:42
  I
• 3:42
  had
• 3:42
  any
• 3:43
  hockey
• 3:44
  heroes
• 3:45
  at
• 3:45
  that
• 3:45
  time.
• 3:46
  Gordie
• 3:46
  Howe
• 3:46
  was
• 3:47
  obviously
• 3:47
  the
• 3:48
  big
• 3:48
  name
• 3:49
  around
• 3:49
  the
• 3:50
  Michigan
• 3:50
  area
• 3:50
  and
• 3:51
  in
• 3:51
  hockey
• 3:52
  in
• 3:52
  general.
• 3:53
  Mr.
• 3:53
  Hockey,
• 3:54
  I
• 3:54
  guess,
• 3:55
  as
• 3:55
  he
• 3:55
  was
• 3:55
  called.
• 3:56
  But
• 3:56
  no,
• 3:57
  it
• 3:57
  was
• 3:57
  just.
• 3:57
  For
• 3:58
  me,
• 3:58
  it
• 3:58
  was
• 3:58
  more
• 3:58
  being
• 3:59
  in
• 3:59
  the
• 3:59
  moment
• 3:59
  as
• 4:00
  a
• 4:00
  kid,
• 4:00
  really,
• 4:01
  just
• 4:01
  having
• 4:02
  fun.
• 4:02
  I
• 4:02
  didn't
• 4:02
  have
• 4:03
  any
• 4:03
  visions
• 4:04
  of,
• 4:05
  of,
• 4:05
  you
• 4:06
  know,
• 4:06
  playing
• 4:06
  in
• 4:06
  college
• 4:07
  or
• 4:08
  going
• 4:08
  any
• 4:08
  further
• 4:09
  than
• 4:09
  that.
• 4:09
  So
• 4:10
  for
• 4:11
  me,
• 4:11
  it
• 4:11
  was
• 4:11
  just
• 4:12
  having
• 4:13
  a
• 4:13
  great
• 4:13
  time
• 4:14
  with
• 4:14
  my
• 4:14
  dad
• 4:15
  coaching
• 4:15
  me
• 4:15
  and
• 4:16
  playing
• 4:16
  with
• 4:16
  my
• 4:16
  brother.
• 4:17
  Just
• 4:17
  being
• 4:17
  a
• 4:17
  kid
• 4:18
  outdoors.
• 4:18
  Yeah,
• 4:19
  being
• 4:19
  a
• 4:19
  kid.
• 4:20
  That's
• 4:21
  great.
• 4:21
  Very
• 4:21
  good,
• 4:22
  Kenny.
• 4:23
  Now,
• 4:23
  your
• 4:23
  dad
• 4:24
  was
• 4:24
  a
• 4:25
  baseball
• 4:25
  player
• 4:25
  of
• 4:26
  some
• 4:26
  renown?
• 4:28
  He
• 4:28
  was,
• 4:28
  yeah.
• 4:28
  I
• 4:29
  mean,
• 4:29
  baseball
• 4:29
  was
• 4:30
  the
• 4:30
  sport
• 4:31
  back
• 4:31
  in
• 4:31
  America
• 4:31
  in
• 4:31
  those
• 4:32
  days,
• 4:32
  back
• 4:32
  in
• 4:32
  the,
• 4:33
  in
• 4:33
  the
• 4:33
  40s
• 4:33
  and
• 4:34
  50s.
• 4:34
  And
• 4:35
  my
• 4:35
  dad
• 4:35
  was
• 4:35
  a
• 4:35
  terrific
• 4:36
  athlete.
• 4:36
  He
• 4:36
  was
• 4:37
  6
• 4:37
  foot
• 4:38
  5.
• 4:39
  I
• 4:40
  got
• 4:40
  some
• 4:40
  of
• 4:40
  his
• 4:41
  height.
• 4:41
  I
• 4:41
  was
• 4:41
  6
• 4:41
  foot
• 4:42
  4.
• 4:43
  But
• 4:43
  yeah,
• 4:44
  he,
• 4:44
  he
• 4:44
  was
• 4:44
  a
• 4:44
  terrific
• 4:45
  baseball
• 4:45
  player.
• 4:46
  Played
• 4:46
  professional
• 4:47
  baseball,
• 4:48
  also
• 4:48
  played
• 4:48
  basketball.
• 4:49
  He
• 4:49
  was
• 4:49
  all
• 4:50
  city
• 4:50
  in
• 4:50
  basketball.
• 4:51
  And.
• 4:52
  And
• 4:52
  then,
• 4:52
  as
• 4:52
  I
• 4:53
  mentioned,
• 4:53
  he
• 4:53
  got
• 4:53
  my
• 4:53
  brother
• 4:54
  and
• 4:54
  I
• 4:54
  started
• 4:54
  hockey.
• 4:55
  So
• 4:55
  we
• 4:55
  were,
• 4:56
  you
• 4:56
  know,
• 4:56
  we
• 4:56
  were
• 4:57
  involved
• 4:57
  in
• 4:57
  a
• 4:57
  lot
• 4:57
  of
• 4:57
  athletics
• 4:58
  growing
• 4:58
  up,
• 4:59
  as
• 4:59
  most
• 4:59
  kids
• 5:00
  did
• 5:00
  back
• 5:00
  then,
• 5:00
  but
• 5:01
  he
• 5:01
  never
• 5:01
  pushed
• 5:02
  me
• 5:02
  or
• 5:02
  my
• 5:02
  brother
• 5:03
  toward
• 5:03
  baseball.
• 5:04
  And
• 5:04
  when
• 5:05
  he
• 5:05
  saw
• 5:05
  the
• 5:05
  passion
• 5:05
  we
• 5:06
  had
• 5:06
  for
• 5:06
  hockey
• 5:07
  at
• 5:07
  a
• 5:07
  young
• 5:07
  age,
• 5:08
  as
• 5:09
  I
• 5:09
  mentioned,
• 5:09
  he
• 5:10
  coached
• 5:10
  us
• 5:10
  all
• 5:10
  the
• 5:10
  way
• 5:11
  through.
• 5:11
  And
• 5:11
  he's
• 5:11
  the
• 5:11
  one.
• 5:12
  I
• 5:13
  give
• 5:13
  him
• 5:13
  credit
• 5:13
  for
• 5:14
  getting
• 5:14
  me
• 5:14
  started
• 5:14
  and
• 5:15
  for
• 5:15
  my
• 5:15
  hockey
• 5:15
  career.
• 5:16
  Okay,
• 5:17
  now,
• 5:18
  talking
• 5:18
  about
• 5:18
  the
• 5:19
  Road
• 5:19
  to
• 5:19
  Lake
• 5:19
  Placid,
• 5:21
  does
• 5:21
  the
• 5:21
  Disney
• 5:22
  film,
• 5:22
  does
• 5:22
  that
• 5:23
  accurately
• 5:23
  depict
• 5:25
  the
• 5:25
  selection
• 5:26
  process
• 5:26
  that
• 5:26
  Herb
• 5:27
  Brooks
• 5:27
  went
• 5:28
  through?
• 5:30
  I
• 5:30
  think
• 5:30
  it
• 5:30
  did
• 5:31
  a
• 5:31
  good
• 5:31
  job.
• 5:32
  I
• 5:32
  wouldn't
• 5:32
  say
• 5:33
  it
• 5:33
  was
• 5:33
  100%
• 5:34
  accurate,
• 5:35
  but,
• 5:36
  you
• 5:36
  know,
• 5:36
  the
• 5:37
  way
• 5:37
  I
• 5:37
  describe
• 5:37
  the
• 5:37
  movie
• 5:38
  is
• 5:38
  for
• 5:38
  a
• 5:39
  lot
• 5:39
  of
• 5:39
  the
• 5:39
  defining
• 5:40
  moments
• 5:40
  of
• 5:41
  the
• 5:41
  team
• 5:41
  throughout
• 5:41
  the
• 5:42
  year.
• 5:42
  They
• 5:43
  did
• 5:43
  a
• 5:43
  nice
• 5:43
  job
• 5:44
  on
• 5:44
  bringing
• 5:45
  those
• 5:45
  to
• 5:45
  light.
• 5:46
  But,
• 5:47
  you
• 5:47
  know,
• 5:47
  the
• 5:47
  selection
• 5:48
  process
• 5:48
  was
• 5:49
  actually
• 5:49
  done
• 5:50
  out
• 5:50
  in
• 5:51
  Colorado
• 5:51
  Springs
• 5:53
  in
• 5:54
  July
• 5:54
  of
• 5:55
  1979,
• 5:56
  and
• 5:57
  they
• 5:58
  brought
• 5:58
  us
• 5:58
  out,
• 5:58
  80
• 5:59
  players
• 6:00
  to
• 6:00
  the
• 6:01
  Broadmoor
• 6:01
  Ice
• 6:01
  arena
• 6:02
  in
• 6:02
  Colorado
• 6:03
  Springs,
• 6:04
  where
• 6:04
  all
• 6:04
  the
• 6:04
  figure
• 6:04
  skaters
• 6:05
  came
• 6:05
  out
• 6:05
  of
• 6:06
  back
• 6:06
  in
• 6:06
  those
• 6:06
  days.
• 6:07
  And
• 6:08
  we
• 6:08
  actually
• 6:08
  played
• 6:09
  a
• 6:09
  tournament
• 6:09
  at
• 6:10
  the
• 6:10
  National
• 6:10
  Sports
• 6:11
  Festival,
• 6:11
  they
• 6:12
  split
• 6:12
  us
• 6:12
  up
• 6:12
  into
• 6:13
  four
• 6:13
  teams
• 6:13
  of
• 6:13
  20
• 6:14
  players,
• 6:15
  played
• 6:15
  an
• 6:15
  actual
• 6:16
  tournament
• 6:16
  where
• 6:16
  they
• 6:16
  gave
• 6:17
  out
• 6:17
  medals
• 6:17
  and
• 6:17
  everything.
• 6:19
  And
• 6:20
  then
• 6:20
  at
• 6:20
  the
• 6:20
  end
• 6:20
  of
• 6:20
  that
• 6:20
  selection
• 6:21
  process,
• 6:22
  Herb
• 6:22
  brought
• 6:23
  us
• 6:23
  into
• 6:23
  a
• 6:23
  room
• 6:24
  at
• 6:24
  the
• 6:24
  Olympic
• 6:25
  Training
• 6:25
  center
• 6:26
  and
• 6:27
  called
• 6:27
  off
• 6:28
  26
• 6:28
  names
• 6:29
  is
• 6:29
  what
• 6:29
  he
• 6:29
  called
• 6:29
  off.
• 6:30
  And
• 6:31
  he
• 6:32
  was
• 6:32
  able
• 6:32
  to.
• 6:33
  He
• 6:33
  had
• 6:33
  to
• 6:33
  cut
• 6:33
  that
• 6:33
  down
• 6:34
  to
• 6:34
  20
• 6:34
  players
• 6:36
  just
• 6:36
  a
• 6:36
  couple
• 6:36
  days
• 6:37
  before
• 6:37
  we
• 6:37
  left
• 6:37
  for
• 6:38
  Lake
• 6:38
  Placid
• 6:38
  in
• 6:38
  February.
• 6:40
  Wow.
• 6:40
  Yeah,
• 6:41
  that's
• 6:41
  a
• 6:41
  tough
• 6:41
  job
• 6:42
  by
• 6:43
  Herb
• 6:43
  there,
• 6:43
  that's
• 6:44
  for
• 6:44
  sure.
• 6:44
  Now,
• 6:45
  the
• 6:45
  game
• 6:46
  where
• 6:47
  you
• 6:47
  guys
• 6:47
  ran
• 6:47
  the
• 6:48
  sprints
• 6:48
  afterwards.
• 6:49
  Talk
• 6:50
  a
• 6:50
  little
• 6:50
  bit
• 6:50
  about
• 6:50
  that
• 6:51
  night,
• 6:51
  Ken.
• 6:53
  Yeah,
• 6:53
  that
• 6:53
  was
• 6:54
  early
• 6:54
  in
• 6:54
  our
• 6:55
  pre
• 6:55
  Olympic
• 6:56
  season.
• 6:56
  You
• 6:56
  know,
• 6:57
  the
• 6:57
  one
• 6:57
  thing,
• 6:58
  again,
• 6:59
  giving
• 6:59
  Herb
• 6:59
  Brooks
• 7:00
  so
• 7:00
  much
• 7:00
  credit
• 7:00
  for
• 7:00
  what
• 7:00
  happened.
• 7:01
  But
• 7:03
  we
• 7:03
  were
• 7:03
  the
• 7:03
  first
• 7:04
  Olympic
• 7:04
  team
• 7:05
  to
• 7:05
  actually
• 7:06
  be
• 7:06
  together
• 7:06
  for
• 7:07
  five
• 7:08
  months
• 7:08
  before
• 7:09
  Lake
• 7:09
  Placid.
• 7:10
  So
• 7:10
  we
• 7:10
  played
• 7:10
  a
• 7:11
  61
• 7:11
  game
• 7:12
  schedule.
• 7:13
  And
• 7:13
  before
• 7:13
  that,
• 7:13
  most
• 7:14
  Olympic
• 7:14
  teams
• 7:14
  would
• 7:15
  play
• 7:15
  a
• 7:15
  few
• 7:16
  exhibition
• 7:16
  games
• 7:17
  and
• 7:17
  go
• 7:17
  in
• 7:17
  and
• 7:17
  play
• 7:17
  the
• 7:18
  tournament.
• 7:18
  And
• 7:19
  Herb
• 7:19
  felt
• 7:19
  that
• 7:20
  we
• 7:20
  needed
• 7:20
  to
• 7:20
  change,
• 7:21
  that.
• 7:21
  We
• 7:21
  needed
• 7:21
  to
• 7:21
  do
• 7:22
  something
• 7:22
  different.
• 7:23
  You
• 7:23
  know,
• 7:23
  doing
• 7:23
  the
• 7:24
  same
• 7:24
  thing
• 7:24
  over
• 7:24
  again
• 7:25
  and
• 7:25
  expecting
• 7:25
  better
• 7:25
  results
• 7:26
  was
• 7:26
  not
• 7:27
  something
• 7:27
  that
• 7:27
  Herb
• 7:27
  wanted
• 7:27
  to
• 7:28
  do.
• 7:28
  So
• 7:29
  that
• 7:30
  game
• 7:30
  you're
• 7:31
  talking
• 7:31
  about
• 7:31
  was
• 7:32
  one
• 7:32
  of
• 7:32
  our
• 7:33
  first
• 7:33
  games.
• 7:34
  After
• 7:34
  you
• 7:34
  had
• 7:34
  selected
• 7:35
  a
• 7:35
  team,
• 7:35
  we
• 7:35
  made
• 7:35
  a
• 7:35
  trip
• 7:36
  over
• 7:36
  to
• 7:36
  Europe,
• 7:37
  I
• 7:37
  think
• 7:37
  we
• 7:37
  played
• 7:38
  eight
• 7:38
  games
• 7:38
  between
• 7:39
  Finland
• 7:39
  and
• 7:40
  Norway,
• 7:41
  and
• 7:42
  one
• 7:42
  of
• 7:42
  our
• 7:43
  last
• 7:43
  games
• 7:43
  in
• 7:43
  Norway,
• 7:44
  we
• 7:44
  were
• 7:44
  playing
• 7:44
  Norway
• 7:45
  national
• 7:45
  team
• 7:45
  two
• 7:46
  games
• 7:46
  in
• 7:46
  a
• 7:46
  row
• 7:46
  back
• 7:47
  to
• 7:47
  back.
• 7:47
  The
• 7:48
  first
• 7:48
  game,
• 7:48
  a
• 7:48
  team
• 7:49
  we
• 7:49
  should
• 7:49
  have
• 7:49
  beaten,
• 7:50
  we
• 7:50
  played
• 7:50
  a
• 7:50
  lackluster
• 7:51
  3,
• 7:51
  3
• 7:52
  tie.
• 7:53
  And
• 7:53
  he
• 7:54
  stopped
• 7:54
  us
• 7:54
  as
• 7:54
  we
• 7:54
  went
• 7:54
  to
• 7:55
  skate
• 7:55
  off
• 7:55
  the
• 7:55
  ice,
• 7:56
  and
• 7:56
  he
• 7:56
  had
• 7:56
  us
• 7:56
  line
• 7:56
  up
• 7:56
  at
• 7:57
  both
• 7:57
  ends
• 7:57
  of
• 7:57
  the
• 7:57
  ring,
• 7:58
  pulled
• 7:58
  out
• 7:58
  his
• 7:59
  whistle,
• 7:59
  and
• 7:59
  he
• 7:59
  said,
• 7:59
  if
• 8:00
  you're
• 8:00
  not
• 8:00
  going
• 8:00
  to
• 8:00
  skate
• 8:00
  in
• 8:00
  the
• 8:00
  game,
• 8:01
  we're
• 8:01
  going
• 8:01
  to
• 8:01
  skate
• 8:01
  now.
• 8:02
  And
• 8:03
  we
• 8:04
  proceeded
• 8:04
  to
• 8:04
  do
• 8:05
  our,
• 8:05
  what
• 8:05
  we
• 8:05
  called
• 8:05
  Herbies,
• 8:07
  our
• 8:08
  conditioning
• 8:09
  punishment
• 8:09
  drills,
• 8:10
  if
• 8:10
  you
• 8:10
  want
• 8:10
  to
• 8:10
  call
• 8:10
  them
• 8:10
  that.
• 8:12
  And
• 8:12
  we
• 8:12
  started
• 8:13
  doing
• 8:13
  those
• 8:14
  for
• 8:14
  about
• 8:14
  a
• 8:14
  half
• 8:15
  hour
• 8:15
  or
• 8:15
  so.
• 8:15
  And
• 8:15
  at
• 8:15
  that
• 8:16
  point,
• 8:16
  the
• 8:16
  rink
• 8:16
  manager
• 8:17
  came
• 8:17
  out,
• 8:18
  told
• 8:18
  Herb
• 8:19
  he
• 8:19
  had
• 8:19
  to
• 8:19
  go
• 8:19
  home.
• 8:19
  And
• 8:20
  essentially,
• 8:21
  Herb
• 8:21
  told
• 8:21
  him,
• 8:22
  well,
• 8:22
  leave
• 8:22
  me
• 8:22
  the
• 8:22
  keys.
• 8:24
  And
• 8:25
  so
• 8:25
  the
• 8:25
  ring
• 8:25
  manager
• 8:26
  left
• 8:26
  the
• 8:26
  ice,
• 8:26
  we
• 8:26
  kept
• 8:27
  skating,
• 8:27
  and
• 8:28
  he
• 8:28
  turned
• 8:28
  the
• 8:28
  lights
• 8:29
  off
• 8:29
  on
• 8:29
  us,
• 8:29
  thinking
• 8:29
  that
• 8:30
  that
• 8:30
  would
• 8:30
  end
• 8:30
  it.
• 8:31
  We
• 8:31
  continued
• 8:32
  to
• 8:32
  skate
• 8:32
  in
• 8:32
  the
• 8:32
  dark
• 8:33
  for
• 8:33
  another
• 8:33
  half
• 8:33
  hour
• 8:34
  or
• 8:34
  so.
• 8:35
  And
• 8:35
  so
• 8:36
  that
• 8:36
  was
• 8:36
  one
• 8:37
  of
• 8:37
  those
• 8:38
  early
• 8:39
  season
• 8:40
  defining
• 8:40
  moments
• 8:41
  that
• 8:41
  I
• 8:41
  talk
• 8:41
  about
• 8:42
  where,
• 8:42
  you
• 8:43
  know,
• 8:44
  I
• 8:44
  think
• 8:45
  it
• 8:45
  galvanized
• 8:45
  the
• 8:46
  team.
• 8:46
  It
• 8:46
  was
• 8:46
  kind
• 8:47
  of
• 8:47
  an
• 8:47
  us
• 8:47
  against
• 8:48
  him
• 8:48
  mentality.
• 8:49
  And,
• 8:50
  you
• 8:50
  know,
• 8:50
  come
• 8:50
  to
• 8:51
  find
• 8:51
  out
• 8:51
  all
• 8:51
  these
• 8:51
  years
• 8:52
  later,
• 8:52
  it
• 8:52
  was
• 8:53
  by
• 8:53
  design.
• 8:54
  He
• 8:54
  wanted
• 8:55
  it
• 8:55
  that
• 8:55
  way.
• 8:55
  He
• 8:55
  wanted
• 8:56
  the
• 8:56
  team
• 8:56
  to
• 8:56
  Come
• 8:56
  together,
• 8:58
  you
• 8:58
  know,
• 8:59
  and
• 8:59
  he
• 8:59
  was
• 8:59
  going
• 8:59
  to
• 9:00
  be
• 9:00
  the
• 9:00
  common
• 9:00
  enemy
• 9:01
  of
• 9:01
  the
• 9:01
  team,
• 9:01
  and
• 9:01
  he
• 9:01
  felt
• 9:02
  that
• 9:02
  was
• 9:02
  one
• 9:02
  way
• 9:02
  that
• 9:02
  we
• 9:03
  were
• 9:03
  all
• 9:03
  going
• 9:03
  to
• 9:03
  bond.
• 9:04
  Yeah.
• 9:05
  And
• 9:05
  he
• 9:05
  was
• 9:05
  right.
• 9:06
  I've
• 9:06
  heard
• 9:07
  the
• 9:07
  term
• 9:07
  Herbies
• 9:08
  before,
• 9:08
  Ken,
• 9:09
  from
• 9:09
  one
• 9:09
  of
• 9:09
  the
• 9:10
  other
• 9:10
  guys.
• 9:10
  It
• 9:10
  might
• 9:10
  have
• 9:11
  been
• 9:11
  O.C.
• 9:11
  but.
• 9:12
  Yeah,
• 9:12
  that's
• 9:13
  pretty
• 9:13
  funny.
• 9:15
  Folks
• 9:15
  would
• 9:16
  enjoy
• 9:16
  hearing
• 9:17
  about
• 9:17
  that,
• 9:17
  that's
• 9:18
  for
• 9:18
  sure.
• 9:18
  Ken
• 9:18
  Morrow
• 9:19
  is
• 9:19
  with
• 9:19
  us
• 9:19
  tonight
• 9:19
  on
• 9:20
  Sports
• 9:20
  Talk
• 9:20
  New
• 9:21
  York.
• 9:21
  Now,
• 9:22
  Herb's
• 9:23
  pregame
• 9:23
  speech
• 9:24
  that
• 9:25
  Kurt
• 9:25
  Russell
• 9:26
  really
• 9:26
  kills
• 9:27
  in
• 9:27
  the
• 9:28
  movie.
• 9:29
  What
• 9:29
  did
• 9:30
  you
• 9:30
  feel
• 9:30
  while
• 9:30
  he
• 9:31
  was
• 9:31
  speaking
• 9:32
  and
• 9:32
  talking
• 9:33
  to
• 9:33
  you
• 9:33
  guys
• 9:33
  before
• 9:34
  the
• 9:34
  game
• 9:34
  with
• 9:34
  the
• 9:34
  Soviets?
• 9:36
  Yeah,
• 9:37
  I
• 9:37
  mean,
• 9:37
  setting
• 9:38
  the
• 9:38
  stage.
• 9:38
  You
• 9:39
  know,
• 9:40
  here
• 9:40
  we're
• 9:40
  all
• 9:40
  about
• 9:41
  playing
• 9:41
  the
• 9:41
  game
• 9:42
  of
• 9:42
  our
• 9:42
  lives.
• 9:42
  We
• 9:42
  were
• 9:43
  such
• 9:43
  a
• 9:43
  young
• 9:43
  team.
• 9:44
  You
• 9:44
  know,
• 9:44
  I
• 9:44
  think
• 9:44
  our
• 9:45
  average
• 9:45
  age
• 9:45
  was
• 9:45
  22
• 9:46
  years
• 9:46
  old,
• 9:47
  and
• 9:48
  we're
• 9:48
  all
• 9:48
  sitting
• 9:48
  in
• 9:49
  this
• 9:49
  small
• 9:49
  locker
• 9:49
  room
• 9:50
  before
• 9:50
  the
• 9:50
  game.
• 9:51
  And
• 9:52
  my
• 9:52
  memory
• 9:53
  of
• 9:53
  it,
• 9:53
  and
• 9:53
  we
• 9:54
  have
• 9:54
  different
• 9:54
  memories
• 9:55
  from.
• 9:55
  Guys,
• 9:55
  it's
• 9:55
  been
• 9:55
  45
• 9:56
  years,
• 9:57
  but
• 9:58
  my
• 9:58
  memory
• 9:58
  was.
• 9:59
  I
• 9:59
  think
• 9:59
  it
• 9:59
  was
• 9:59
  written
• 9:59
  on
• 10:00
  a
• 10:00
  napkin
• 10:00
  or
• 10:00
  just
• 10:01
  a
• 10:01
  small
• 10:01
  piece
• 10:01
  of
• 10:01
  paper
• 10:02
  that
• 10:02
  he
• 10:02
  pulled
• 10:02
  out,
• 10:03
  and
• 10:05
  it
• 10:05
  was,
• 10:06
  you
• 10:06
  were
• 10:06
  born
• 10:06
  to
• 10:06
  be
• 10:06
  a
• 10:07
  player.
• 10:07
  You
• 10:07
  were
• 10:07
  meant
• 10:08
  to
• 10:08
  be
• 10:08
  here.
• 10:09
  This
• 10:09
  is
• 10:09
  your
• 10:10
  moment.
• 10:11
  Now,
• 10:11
  I
• 10:11
  know
• 10:11
  the
• 10:12
  Kurt
• 10:12
  Russell
• 10:12
  speech
• 10:13
  in
• 10:13
  the
• 10:13
  movie,
• 10:13
  which
• 10:13
  I
• 10:14
  get
• 10:14
  a
• 10:14
  lot
• 10:14
  of
• 10:14
  requests
• 10:14
  to
• 10:15
  come
• 10:15
  in
• 10:15
  and
• 10:15
  do
• 10:15
  speeches
• 10:16
  before
• 10:16
  soccer
• 10:17
  games
• 10:17
  and
• 10:18
  football
• 10:18
  games
• 10:18
  and
• 10:18
  basketball
• 10:19
  games
• 10:19
  and
• 10:19
  everything
• 10:19
  else.
• 10:22
  The
• 10:22
  Kurt
• 10:22
  Russell
• 10:23
  speech
• 10:23
  in
• 10:23
  the
• 10:23
  movie
• 10:23
  is
• 10:23
  just
• 10:24
  fantastic.
• 10:24
  I
• 10:25
  think
• 10:26
  they
• 10:26
  made
• 10:26
  it
• 10:26
  a
• 10:27
  little
• 10:27
  longer
• 10:27
  than
• 10:27
  it
• 10:27
  was
• 10:28
  in
• 10:28
  the
• 10:28
  locker
• 10:28
  room,
• 10:29
  but
• 10:30
  I
• 10:30
  still
• 10:30
  get
• 10:30
  fired
• 10:31
  up.
• 10:31
  Every
• 10:31
  time
• 10:31
  I
• 10:31
  hear
• 10:32
  that's
• 10:32
  Kurt
• 10:33
  Russell's
• 10:33
  defining
• 10:34
  moment.
• 10:34
  I
• 10:34
  think
• 10:35
  right
• 10:35
  there.
• 10:37
  That
• 10:37
  was
• 10:38
  tremendous.
• 10:39
  Now,
• 10:40
  did
• 10:40
  the
• 10:40
  Soviets
• 10:41
  seem
• 10:41
  surprised
• 10:42
  when
• 10:42
  you
• 10:43
  guys
• 10:43
  came
• 10:43
  out
• 10:44
  the
• 10:44
  way
• 10:44
  you
• 10:44
  did
• 10:44
  that
• 10:45
  night?
• 10:46
  Yeah,
• 10:47
  and
• 10:47
  they
• 10:48
  were
• 10:48
  shocked.
• 10:49
  And
• 10:49
  I
• 10:49
  think,
• 10:50
  you
• 10:50
  know,
• 10:51
  again,
• 10:52
  what
• 10:52
  led
• 10:53
  up
• 10:53
  to
• 10:53
  that
• 10:54
  was
• 10:54
  a
• 10:54
  week
• 10:54
  and
• 10:54
  a
• 10:55
  half
• 10:55
  before,
• 10:56
  three
• 10:56
  days
• 10:57
  before
• 10:57
  the
• 10:57
  Olympics
• 10:58
  started,
• 10:58
  we
• 10:59
  played
• 10:59
  them
• 10:59
  in
• 10:59
  an
• 10:59
  exhibition,
• 11:00
  our
• 11:00
  final
• 11:00
  exhibition
• 11:01
  game
• 11:01
  of
• 11:01
  that
• 11:01
  season
• 11:02
  I
• 11:02
  told
• 11:02
  you
• 11:02
  about,
• 11:03
  and
• 11:03
  it
• 11:03
  was
• 11:03
  in
• 11:04
  Madison
• 11:04
  Square
• 11:04
  Garden,
• 11:06
  and
• 11:06
  they
• 11:07
  beat
• 11:07
  us
• 11:07
  10
• 11:07
  to
• 11:07
  3.
• 11:09
  You
• 11:09
  know,
• 11:10
  it
• 11:10
  was
• 11:10
  a
• 11:11
  shellacking
• 11:13
  by
• 11:13
  the
• 11:13
  Soviet
• 11:13
  team,
• 11:15
  but
• 11:16
  it
• 11:16
  really
• 11:17
  did
• 11:17
  a
• 11:17
  couple
• 11:17
  things
• 11:18
  that
• 11:18
  worked
• 11:18
  in
• 11:18
  our
• 11:19
  favor.
• 11:19
  You
• 11:19
  know,
• 11:19
  it
• 11:19
  got
• 11:20
  us
• 11:20
  on
• 11:20
  the
• 11:20
  ice
• 11:20
  with
• 11:20
  these
• 11:21
  guys.
• 11:21
  It
• 11:21
  got
• 11:21
  kind
• 11:22
  of
• 11:22
  the
• 11:22
  nerves
• 11:22
  out
• 11:23
  before
• 11:23
  going
• 11:24
  to
• 11:24
  Lake
• 11:24
  Placid.
• 11:25
  And
• 11:26
  secondly,
• 11:26
  it
• 11:26
  just
• 11:26
  made
• 11:27
  them
• 11:27
  so
• 11:28
  overconfident
• 11:28
  that
• 11:29
  any
• 11:30
  game
• 11:30
  against
• 11:30
  us
• 11:31
  in
• 11:31
  the
• 11:31
  Olympics
• 11:32
  was
• 11:32
  not
• 11:32
  going
• 11:32
  to
• 11:33
  be
• 11:33
  a
• 11:33
  challenge.
• 11:33
  And
• 11:34
  so
• 11:34
  I
• 11:34
  think
• 11:34
  there
• 11:35
  was
• 11:35
  a
• 11:35
  bit
• 11:35
  of
• 11:35
  overconfidence
• 11:36
  maybe
• 11:36
  on
• 11:36
  their
• 11:37
  part,
• 11:38
  and
• 11:38
  the
• 11:39
  fact
• 11:39
  that
• 11:39
  we
• 11:39
  had
• 11:39
  been
• 11:40
  just,
• 11:40
  you
• 11:41
  know,
• 11:41
  snowballing,
• 11:42
  playing
• 11:43
  better
• 11:43
  every
• 11:43
  game
• 11:44
  from
• 11:44
  the
• 11:44
  start
• 11:45
  of
• 11:45
  The
• 11:45
  Olympics
• 11:45
  right
• 11:46
  through
• 11:46
  until
• 11:46
  that
• 11:47
  miracle
• 11:48
  and
• 11:48
  ice
• 11:48
  game
• 11:48
  on
• 11:49
  a
• 11:49
  Friday
• 11:49
  evening.
• 11:50
  So,
• 11:50
  you
• 11:51
  know,
• 11:51
  a
• 11:51
  lot
• 11:51
  of
• 11:51
  things
• 11:52
  worked
• 11:52
  in
• 11:52
  our
• 11:52
  favor.
• 11:53
  Being
• 11:53
  in
• 11:53
  front
• 11:53
  of
• 11:53
  our
• 11:53
  home
• 11:54
  crowd
• 11:54
  was
• 11:54
  certainly
• 11:54
  a
• 11:55
  huge
• 11:55
  advantage
• 11:55
  for
• 11:56
  us
• 11:56
  being
• 11:56
  the
• 11:56
  underdog.
• 11:57
  You
• 11:58
  know,
• 11:59
  nobody
• 11:59
  expecting
• 12:00
  us
• 12:00
  to
• 12:00
  even
• 12:00
  keep
• 12:00
  the
• 12:01
  game
• 12:01
  close.
• 12:01
  So
• 12:02
  there
• 12:02
  wasn't
• 12:02
  a
• 12:02
  whole
• 12:02
  lot
• 12:02
  of
• 12:03
  pressure
• 12:03
  on
• 12:03
  us
• 12:03
  at
• 12:04
  the
• 12:04
  time.
• 12:04
  And
• 12:05
  as
• 12:05
  I
• 12:05
  mentioned,
• 12:05
  we'd
• 12:06
  been
• 12:06
  playing
• 12:06
  really
• 12:07
  well.
• 12:07
  You
• 12:08
  know,
• 12:08
  we
• 12:08
  carried
• 12:08
  a
• 12:08
  lot
• 12:08
  of
• 12:09
  great
• 12:09
  momentum
• 12:09
  into
• 12:10
  the
• 12:10
  game,
• 12:10
  so
• 12:11
  a
• 12:11
  lot
• 12:11
  of
• 12:11
  good
• 12:11
  things
• 12:12
  were
• 12:12
  going
• 12:12
  in
• 12:12
  our
• 12:12
  favor.
• 12:13
  What
• 12:14
  did
• 12:14
  you
• 12:14
  think,
• 12:14
  Ken,
• 12:14
  or
• 12:15
  what
• 12:15
  did
• 12:15
  the
• 12:15
  other
• 12:16
  guys
• 12:16
  think
• 12:16
  when
• 12:16
  Tikonov
• 12:17
  pulled
• 12:17
  Tretiac
• 12:18
  out
• 12:18
  of
• 12:18
  the
• 12:18
  goal?
• 12:20
  Yeah,
• 12:21
  I
• 12:21
  mean,
• 12:21
  that
• 12:21
  was
• 12:21
  a
• 12:21
  big
• 12:22
  moment
• 12:22
  in
• 12:22
  the
• 12:22
  game
• 12:23
  again,
• 12:24
  for
• 12:24
  people
• 12:24
  that
• 12:25
  don't
• 12:25
  remember.
• 12:26
  The
• 12:26
  Soviets
• 12:27
  were
• 12:27
  up
• 12:27
  two
• 12:27
  to
• 12:27
  one
• 12:27
  in
• 12:28
  the
• 12:28
  first
• 12:28
  period,
• 12:28
  and
• 12:29
  we
• 12:30
  had.
• 12:30
  Right
• 12:31
  toward
• 12:31
  the
• 12:31
  end
• 12:31
  of
• 12:31
  the
• 12:31
  period,
• 12:32
  I
• 12:33
  dropped
• 12:33
  the
• 12:33
  puck
• 12:33
  back
• 12:34
  to
• 12:34
  Davy
• 12:34
  Christian,
• 12:35
  knowing
• 12:35
  There
• 12:35
  were
• 12:35
  only
• 12:36
  10
• 12:36
  seconds
• 12:37
  left.
• 12:38
  Davy
• 12:38
  skated
• 12:38
  up
• 12:39
  to
• 12:39
  the
• 12:39
  red
• 12:39
  line,
• 12:40
  fired
• 12:40
  a
• 12:40
  long
• 12:41
  shot
• 12:41
  at
• 12:41
  the
• 12:41
  goal,
• 12:42
  and
• 12:43
  Treciak
• 12:44
  left
• 12:44
  an
• 12:45
  uncharacteristic
• 12:46
  rebound
• 12:48
  thinking
• 12:48
  that
• 12:48
  the
• 12:48
  period
• 12:49
  was
• 12:49
  going
• 12:49
  to
• 12:49
  end.
• 12:49
  And
• 12:50
  Mark
• 12:50
  Johnson
• 12:50
  raced
• 12:51
  in
• 12:51
  and
• 12:51
  scored
• 12:52
  with
• 12:52
  1
• 12:52
  second
• 12:52
  left.
• 12:53
  Tikonok
• 12:54
  pulled.
• 12:54
  Tretyak
• 12:55
  at
• 12:55
  that
• 12:55
  point
• 12:56
  sent
• 12:56
  the
• 12:56
  other
• 12:56
  goalie
• 12:57
  out.
• 12:57
  Mishkin,
• 12:58
  again,
• 12:58
  a
• 12:59
  world
• 12:59
  class
• 12:59
  goalie.
• 13:01
  The
• 13:01
  Soviet
• 13:01
  team,
• 13:02
  it
• 13:02
  wasn't
• 13:02
  like
• 13:02
  they
• 13:02
  were
• 13:02
  replacing,
• 13:03
  you
• 13:04
  know,
• 13:04
  a
• 13:04
  great
• 13:04
  goalie
• 13:05
  with
• 13:05
  a
• 13:05
  mediocre
• 13:06
  goalie.
• 13:06
  You
• 13:07
  know,
• 13:07
  Mishkin
• 13:07
  was
• 13:07
  a
• 13:08
  terrific
• 13:08
  goalie
• 13:08
  himself,
• 13:09
  but
• 13:09
  I
• 13:09
  don't
• 13:10
  remember
• 13:10
  talking
• 13:10
  about
• 13:11
  it
• 13:11
  in
• 13:11
  the
• 13:11
  locker
• 13:11
  room.
• 13:12
  You
• 13:12
  know,
• 13:12
  it
• 13:13
  happened
• 13:13
  at
• 13:13
  the
• 13:13
  end
• 13:13
  of
• 13:14
  the
• 13:14
  first
• 13:14
  period,
• 13:15
  coming
• 13:15
  out,
• 13:17
  not
• 13:18
  really
• 13:19
  understanding
• 13:19
  why
• 13:20
  they
• 13:20
  had
• 13:20
  pulled
• 13:20
  them.
• 13:21
  But,
• 13:21
  you
• 13:21
  know,
• 13:22
  our
• 13:23
  focus
• 13:23
  wasn't
• 13:23
  on
• 13:24
  who
• 13:24
  their
• 13:24
  goaltender
• 13:25
  was.
• 13:25
  Our
• 13:25
  focus
• 13:25
  was
• 13:26
  on
• 13:26
  just
• 13:26
  trying
• 13:26
  to
• 13:26
  keep
• 13:26
  the
• 13:27
  game
• 13:27
  close
• 13:27
  and
• 13:28
  playing
• 13:28
  against
• 13:29
  all
• 13:29
  these
• 13:29
  great,
• 13:30
  great
• 13:30
  players.
• 13:31
  So
• 13:32
  I
• 13:32
  don't
• 13:32
  think
• 13:32
  it
• 13:33
  factored
• 13:34
  into
• 13:34
  too
• 13:34
  much
• 13:34
  of
• 13:35
  didn't
• 13:35
  change
• 13:36
  anything
• 13:36
  that
• 13:36
  we
• 13:37
  were
• 13:37
  doing
• 13:37
  at
• 13:37
  the
• 13:37
  time.
• 13:38
  Like
• 13:38
  people
• 13:38
  say,
• 13:39
  it
• 13:39
  was
• 13:39
  the
• 13:40
  longest
• 13:40
  10
• 13:41
  minutes
• 13:41
  of
• 13:41
  their
• 13:42
  life
• 13:42
  in
• 13:43
  that
• 13:43
  period.
• 13:44
  What
• 13:44
  was
• 13:45
  going
• 13:45
  through
• 13:45
  your
• 13:45
  mind
• 13:46
  in
• 13:46
  the
• 13:46
  final
• 13:46
  seconds,
• 13:47
  Ken?
• 13:48
  Yeah,
• 13:49
  I
• 13:49
  was
• 13:49
  on
• 13:49
  the
• 13:49
  ice
• 13:50
  for
• 13:50
  the
• 13:50
  last
• 13:50
  minute
• 13:50
  and
• 13:51
  a
• 13:51
  half.
• 13:51
  Mike
• 13:51
  Ramsey
• 13:52
  and
• 13:52
  myself
• 13:52
  were
• 13:52
  the
• 13:52
  two
• 13:53
  defensemen
• 13:53
  out
• 13:53
  there.
• 13:54
  And
• 13:54
  Face
• 13:55
  off
• 13:55
  was
• 13:55
  in
• 13:55
  their
• 13:56
  end
• 13:56
  with
• 13:57
  a
• 13:57
  minute
• 13:57
  and
• 13:57
  a
• 13:57
  half,
• 13:58
  exactly
• 13:58
  a
• 13:58
  minute
• 13:58
  and
• 13:58
  a
• 13:58
  half
• 13:59
  to
• 13:59
  go.
• 13:59
  And
• 14:01
  yeah,
• 14:02
  people
• 14:02
  have
• 14:02
  asked
• 14:03
  me
• 14:03
  over
• 14:03
  and
• 14:03
  over,
• 14:04
  you
• 14:04
  know,
• 14:04
  what
• 14:05
  were
• 14:05
  you
• 14:05
  thinking
• 14:05
  about
• 14:06
  at
• 14:06
  the
• 14:06
  end
• 14:06
  of
• 14:06
  the
• 14:06
  game?
• 14:07
  My
• 14:07
  only
• 14:07
  thoughts
• 14:08
  that
• 14:08
  whole
• 14:08
  last
• 14:09
  minute
• 14:09
  and
• 14:09
  a
• 14:09
  half
• 14:09
  were
• 14:10
  to
• 14:10
  get
• 14:10
  the
• 14:10
  puck
• 14:11
  out
• 14:11
  of
• 14:11
  our
• 14:11
  end,
• 14:12
  get
• 14:12
  it
• 14:12
  out
• 14:12
  over
• 14:12
  the
• 14:13
  blue
• 14:13
  line,
• 14:14
  don't
• 14:14
  spend
• 14:14
  any
• 14:15
  time
• 14:15
  in
• 14:15
  your
• 14:15
  own
• 14:15
  end.
• 14:16
  And
• 14:17
  of
• 14:17
  Course,
• 14:17
  we
• 14:17
  did
• 14:18
  spend
• 14:18
  quite
• 14:18
  a
• 14:18
  bit
• 14:18
  of
• 14:19
  time
• 14:19
  in
• 14:19
  our
• 14:19
  own
• 14:19
  end.
• 14:20
  You
• 14:21
  know,
• 14:21
  this
• 14:21
  team
• 14:21
  could
• 14:21
  go
• 14:22
  out
• 14:22
  and
• 14:22
  score,
• 14:23
  you
• 14:24
  know,
• 14:24
  two
• 14:24
  or
• 14:24
  three
• 14:24
  goals
• 14:25
  in
• 14:25
  the
• 14:25
  last
• 14:25
  minute
• 14:25
  of
• 14:25
  the
• 14:26
  game.
• 14:26
  So,
• 14:27
  yeah,
• 14:27
  just
• 14:27
  trying
• 14:28
  to
• 14:28
  keep
• 14:28
  it
• 14:28
  out.
• 14:29
  You
• 14:30
  know,
• 14:30
  Jimmy
• 14:30
  Craig
• 14:31
  played
• 14:31
  out
• 14:31
  of
• 14:31
  his
• 14:31
  mind,
• 14:32
  you
• 14:32
  know,
• 14:32
  not
• 14:33
  only
• 14:33
  through
• 14:33
  the
• 14:33
  whole
• 14:33
  tournament,
• 14:34
  but
• 14:34
  in
• 14:34
  that
• 14:34
  game
• 14:35
  as
• 14:35
  well.
• 14:36
  And,
• 14:37
  yeah,
• 14:37
  those
• 14:38
  last
• 14:38
  few
• 14:38
  seconds,
• 14:39
  I
• 14:39
  thank
• 14:40
  Al
• 14:40
  Michaels
• 14:41
  every
• 14:41
  time
• 14:41
  I
• 14:41
  hear
• 14:41
  that
• 14:42
  call
• 14:42
  because
• 14:43
  he
• 14:43
  mentions
• 14:44
  my
• 14:44
  name
• 14:44
  right
• 14:44
  toward
• 14:44
  the
• 14:45
  end.
• 14:45
  So,
• 14:46
  yeah,
• 14:47
  just,
• 14:47
  you
• 14:48
  know,
• 14:48
  indescribable.
• 14:49
  The
• 14:49
  feeling,
• 14:50
  you
• 14:50
  know,
• 14:50
  when
• 14:51
  that
• 14:51
  final
• 14:51
  buzzer
• 14:51
  went
• 14:51
  off.
• 14:52
  I
• 14:52
  spoke
• 14:53
  to
• 14:53
  Art
• 14:53
  Shamsky
• 14:54
  of
• 14:54
  the
• 14:54
  69
• 14:55
  Mets
• 14:56
  last
• 14:56
  weekend
• 14:56
  on
• 14:57
  the
• 14:57
  show,
• 14:57
  and
• 14:58
  he
• 14:58
  says
• 14:59
  he
• 14:59
  never
• 14:59
  gets
• 14:59
  tired
• 15:00
  of
• 15:00
  talking
• 15:00
  to
• 15:01
  the
• 15:01
  fans
• 15:01
  about
• 15:02
  1969.
• 15:04
  He
• 15:05
  figures
• 15:05
  that
• 15:05
  maybe
• 15:06
  about
• 15:06
  three,
• 15:07
  half
• 15:07
  a
• 15:07
  million
• 15:07
  people
• 15:08
  were
• 15:08
  in
• 15:08
  Shea
• 15:08
  Stadium
• 15:09
  that
• 15:10
  day
• 15:10
  because
• 15:11
  everybody
• 15:11
  tells
• 15:11
  them
• 15:12
  they
• 15:12
  were
• 15:12
  there.
• 15:13
  They
• 15:13
  always
• 15:14
  bring
• 15:14
  it
• 15:14
  up,
• 15:14
  inevitably.
• 15:16
  Do
• 15:16
  you
• 15:16
  feel
• 15:16
  the
• 15:17
  same
• 15:17
  way
• 15:17
  about
• 15:18
  the
• 15:18
  Miracle
• 15:19
  on
• 15:19
  Ice?
• 15:20
  I
• 15:20
  do.
• 15:21
  The
• 15:21
  greatest
• 15:21
  joy
• 15:21
  for
• 15:22
  me
• 15:22
  over
• 15:22
  the
• 15:22
  last
• 15:22
  45
• 15:23
  years,
• 15:24
  and
• 15:24
  it
• 15:24
  maybe
• 15:25
  even
• 15:25
  is
• 15:25
  growing
• 15:26
  in
• 15:26
  stature
• 15:27
  now,
• 15:27
  all
• 15:28
  these
• 15:28
  years
• 15:28
  later,
• 15:29
  my
• 15:29
  greatest
• 15:29
  joy
• 15:30
  is
• 15:30
  just
• 15:30
  having
• 15:31
  people
• 15:31
  come
• 15:31
  up
• 15:31
  to
• 15:31
  me
• 15:32
  and
• 15:32
  tell
• 15:32
  me
• 15:32
  their
• 15:32
  story.
• 15:33
  And
• 15:33
  that's
• 15:33
  been
• 15:34
  the
• 15:34
  case,
• 15:34
  you
• 15:35
  know,
• 15:36
  ever
• 15:36
  since
• 15:37
  1980
• 15:37
  happened,
• 15:38
  is
• 15:38
  that
• 15:39
  somebody
• 15:39
  will
• 15:39
  come
• 15:40
  up
• 15:40
  to
• 15:40
  you
• 15:40
  and
• 15:40
  they'll
• 15:41
  tell
• 15:41
  me
• 15:42
  who
• 15:42
  they
• 15:42
  were
• 15:42
  with
• 15:43
  watching
• 15:44
  the
• 15:44
  game.
• 15:45
  You
• 15:45
  know,
• 15:45
  the
• 15:46
  reaction,
• 15:46
  it.
• 15:47
  And
• 15:47
  it's.
• 15:48
  It's
• 15:48
  hard
• 15:48
  to
• 15:49
  believe
• 15:49
  that
• 15:50
  I'm
• 15:50
  comparing
• 15:51
  it
• 15:51
  to
• 15:51
  some
• 15:51
  of
• 15:51
  these
• 15:52
  great
• 15:52
  moments
• 15:53
  in
• 15:53
  history.
• 15:53
  But,
• 15:54
  you
• 15:54
  know,
• 15:54
  for
• 15:54
  me
• 15:55
  growing
• 15:55
  up,
• 15:56
  I
• 15:56
  remember
• 15:56
  when
• 15:56
  JFK
• 15:57
  was
• 15:57
  assassinated.
• 15:58
  I
• 15:58
  remember
• 15:59
  when
• 15:59
  we
• 15:59
  all.
• 15:59
  Armstrong
• 16:00
  walked
• 16:01
  on
• 16:01
  the
• 16:01
  moon.
• 16:02
  You
• 16:02
  remember
• 16:02
  when
• 16:02
  911
• 16:03
  happened.
• 16:04
  Those
• 16:04
  things
• 16:04
  are
• 16:05
  etched
• 16:05
  into
• 16:05
  your
• 16:06
  mind
• 16:06
  and
• 16:06
  your
• 16:06
  soul,
• 16:07
  and
• 16:07
  you
• 16:08
  remember
• 16:08
  those
• 16:09
  moments,
• 16:10
  and
• 16:10
  that's
• 16:11
  the
• 16:11
  reaction
• 16:12
  from
• 16:12
  people
• 16:12
  that
• 16:12
  come
• 16:13
  up
• 16:13
  to
• 16:13
  me
• 16:13
  that
• 16:13
  thought
• 16:14
  that
• 16:15
  were
• 16:15
  a
• 16:15
  part
• 16:15
  of
• 16:15
  it.
• 16:16
  It's
• 16:16
  either
• 16:17
  I
• 16:17
  was
• 16:17
  watching
• 16:18
  the
• 16:18
  game
• 16:18
  with
• 16:18
  my
• 16:18
  dad,
• 16:19
  first
• 16:20
  time
• 16:20
  I
• 16:20
  ever
• 16:20
  saw
• 16:20
  him
• 16:20
  cry
• 16:22
  to
• 16:22
  people
• 16:23
  that
• 16:23
  were
• 16:24
  on
• 16:24
  airplanes.
• 16:25
  They
• 16:25
  all
• 16:25
  stood
• 16:25
  up
• 16:25
  and
• 16:26
  cheered
• 16:26
  and
• 16:26
  hugged.
• 16:26
  Total
• 16:27
  strangers.
• 16:28
  I've
• 16:28
  had
• 16:29
  military
• 16:29
  people
• 16:30
  tell
• 16:30
  me
• 16:30
  that
• 16:30
  they
• 16:30
  were
• 16:31
  back
• 16:32
  and
• 16:32
  forth
• 16:32
  with
• 16:32
  the
• 16:32
  Russians,
• 16:33
  this
• 16:33
  is
• 16:33
  during
• 16:33
  the
• 16:34
  Cold
• 16:34
  War,
• 16:34
  letting
• 16:35
  them
• 16:35
  know
• 16:35
  we
• 16:35
  had
• 16:35
  beat
• 16:36
  their
• 16:36
  hockey
• 16:36
  team.
• 16:37
  People
• 16:38
  that
• 16:38
  have
• 16:38
  told
• 16:38
  me
• 16:39
  that
• 16:39
  that's
• 16:39
  the
• 16:40
  day
• 16:40
  that
• 16:40
  they
• 16:40
  either
• 16:40
  became
• 16:41
  a
• 16:41
  hockey
• 16:41
  fan
• 16:42
  or
• 16:42
  became
• 16:42
  a
• 16:43
  player,
• 16:44
  was
• 16:44
  when
• 16:45
  they
• 16:45
  watched
• 16:46
  us
• 16:46
  win.
• 16:47
  So
• 16:47
  it's
• 16:47
  just
• 16:47
  been
• 16:49
  truly
• 16:50
  remarkable
• 16:51
  to
• 16:51
  hear
• 16:51
  all
• 16:51
  these
• 16:52
  stories.
• 16:52
  And
• 16:53
  as
• 16:53
  I
• 16:53
  said,
• 16:53
  it's
• 16:54
  the
• 16:54
  greatest
• 16:54
  joy
• 16:55
  I've
• 16:55
  gotten
• 16:55
  over
• 16:55
  the
• 16:56
  years.
• 16:56
  Have
• 16:56
  you
• 16:57
  spoken
• 16:57
  to
• 16:57
  any
• 16:58
  of
• 16:58
  the
• 16:58
  Russian
• 16:59
  players
• 16:59
  since
• 17:00
  then,
• 17:00
  Ken?
• 17:01
  Any
• 17:02
  conversations?
• 17:03
  What
• 17:03
  do
• 17:03
  they
• 17:03
  say
• 17:04
  about
• 17:04
  it?
• 17:05
  No
• 17:06
  real
• 17:06
  conversations.
• 17:07
  As
• 17:08
  you
• 17:08
  know,
• 17:08
  the
• 17:08
  Iron
• 17:09
  Curtain
• 17:09
  Kind
• 17:09
  of
• 17:10
  came
• 17:10
  down
• 17:10
  toward
• 17:10
  the
• 17:10
  late
• 17:11
  80s.
• 17:11
  And
• 17:11
  then
• 17:12
  we
• 17:12
  started
• 17:12
  seeing
• 17:13
  a
• 17:13
  few
• 17:13
  of
• 17:13
  these
• 17:14
  players
• 17:14
  come
• 17:14
  over,
• 17:15
  play
• 17:15
  in
• 17:15
  the
• 17:16
  NHL.
• 17:16
  I
• 17:16
  didn't
• 17:17
  get
• 17:17
  a
• 17:17
  chance
• 17:17
  to
• 17:18
  really
• 17:18
  play
• 17:18
  against
• 17:19
  any
• 17:19
  of
• 17:19
  them
• 17:20
  after
• 17:20
  1980.
• 17:22
  I
• 17:23
  did
• 17:23
  have
• 17:23
  an
• 17:24
  encounter
• 17:24
  with
• 17:24
  Treciak
• 17:25
  and
• 17:26
  one
• 17:26
  of
• 17:26
  the
• 17:26
  press
• 17:27
  boxes.
• 17:27
  He
• 17:28
  was
• 17:28
  actually
• 17:28
  a
• 17:28
  goalie
• 17:29
  coach
• 17:29
  for
• 17:29
  the
• 17:29
  Chicago
• 17:30
  Blackhawks
• 17:30
  for
• 17:31
  a
• 17:31
  couple
• 17:31
  years.
• 17:31
  Oh,
• 17:31
  I
• 17:32
  didn't
• 17:32
  know
• 17:32
  that
• 17:33
  back
• 17:33
  in.
• 17:33
  The
• 17:33
  early
• 17:34
  2000s,
• 17:34
  I
• 17:35
  think
• 17:35
  it
• 17:35
  was.
• 17:35
  And
• 17:35
  I.
• 17:36
  I
• 17:36
  approached
• 17:37
  him
• 17:37
  and
• 17:38
  I
• 17:38
  went
• 17:38
  over,
• 17:38
  and
• 17:38
  I
• 17:39
  was
• 17:39
  really
• 17:39
  nervous
• 17:39
  to
• 17:40
  go
• 17:40
  over
• 17:40
  and
• 17:40
  just
• 17:40
  say
• 17:40
  hello
• 17:41
  to
• 17:41
  him,
• 17:41
  but
• 17:42
  I
• 17:42
  felt
• 17:42
  I
• 17:42
  had
• 17:42
  to
• 17:42
  do
• 17:43
  it.
• 17:43
  And
• 17:43
  I
• 17:43
  walked
• 17:44
  over,
• 17:44
  and
• 17:44
  before
• 17:44
  I
• 17:44
  could
• 17:45
  get
• 17:45
  a
• 17:45
  word
• 17:45
  out,
• 17:46
  he
• 17:46
  said,
• 17:47
  I
• 17:47
  know
• 17:47
  who
• 17:48
  you
• 17:48
  are.
• 17:49
  And
• 17:49
  he
• 17:50
  had
• 17:50
  a
• 17:50
  big
• 17:50
  smile
• 17:50
  on
• 17:51
  his
• 17:51
  face.
• 17:51
  Oh,
• 17:52
  man,
• 17:52
  that's
• 17:53
  a
• 17:53
  great
• 17:53
  one.
• 17:54
  You
• 17:55
  go
• 17:55
  to
• 17:55
  the
• 17:55
  Islanders
• 17:56
  right
• 17:56
  after
• 17:56
  that,
• 17:57
  Ken,
• 17:58
  from
• 17:58
  a
• 17:58
  gold
• 17:59
  medal,
• 17:59
  right
• 17:59
  to
• 18:00
  the
• 18:00
  New
• 18:00
  York
• 18:00
  Islanders,
• 18:01
  who,
• 18:01
  of
• 18:01
  course,
• 18:01
  were
• 18:02
  a
• 18:02
  contending
• 18:02
  hockey
• 18:03
  team.
• 18:04
  Not
• 18:05
  too
• 18:05
  bad
• 18:06
  of
• 18:06
  a
• 18:06
  run
• 18:07
  of
• 18:07
  luck
• 18:07
  there,
• 18:07
  huh?
• 18:09
  Well,
• 18:10
  as
• 18:10
  I
• 18:10
  explained
• 18:11
  to
• 18:11
  people,
• 18:11
  timing
• 18:11
  is
• 18:12
  everything,
• 18:12
  and
• 18:12
  I
• 18:13
  was
• 18:14
  really
• 18:14
  fortunate
• 18:15
  with
• 18:15
  great
• 18:15
  timing
• 18:16
  throughout
• 18:16
  my
• 18:16
  career.
• 18:17
  And,
• 18:18
  you
• 18:18
  know,
• 18:18
  I
• 18:18
  got
• 18:18
  to
• 18:18
  play
• 18:19
  all
• 18:19
  four
• 18:19
  years
• 18:19
  in
• 18:20
  college,
• 18:20
  and
• 18:20
  then
• 18:20
  the
• 18:21
  Olympic
• 18:21
  experience
• 18:22
  came
• 18:22
  along
• 18:23
  the
• 18:23
  next
• 18:23
  year,
• 18:24
  so
• 18:24
  it
• 18:24
  was
• 18:25
  seamless
• 18:25
  for
• 18:25
  me.
• 18:26
  And
• 18:26
  then
• 18:26
  who'd
• 18:27
  have
• 18:27
  thought,
• 18:28
  you
• 18:28
  know,
• 18:28
  I
• 18:28
  would
• 18:28
  ever
• 18:28
  get
• 18:29
  the
• 18:29
  opportunity
• 18:29
  to
• 18:30
  step
• 18:30
  right
• 18:30
  from
• 18:30
  the
• 18:30
  Olympic
• 18:31
  team
• 18:31
  onto
• 18:32
  the
• 18:32
  New
• 18:32
  York
• 18:32
  Islanders.
• 18:33
  And
• 18:34
  Bill
• 18:34
  Torrey
• 18:35
  had
• 18:35
  let
• 18:35
  me
• 18:35
  know
• 18:35
  up
• 18:36
  in
• 18:36
  Lake
• 18:36
  Placid
• 18:37
  that
• 18:37
  they
• 18:37
  were
• 18:38
  going
• 18:38
  to
• 18:38
  bring
• 18:38
  me
• 18:38
  in
• 18:38
  to
• 18:39
  Long
• 18:39
  Island.
• 18:39
  I
• 18:39
  didn't
• 18:39
  know
• 18:40
  whether
• 18:40
  they
• 18:40
  were
• 18:40
  going
• 18:40
  to
• 18:40
  send
• 18:40
  me
• 18:40
  to
• 18:41
  their
• 18:41
  farm
• 18:41
  team
• 18:41
  or
• 18:42
  whatever.
• 18:43
  He
• 18:43
  said,
• 18:43
  we're
• 18:43
  going
• 18:43
  to
• 18:43
  bring
• 18:44
  in.
• 18:44
  And
• 18:45
  again,
• 18:45
  this
• 18:46
  is
• 18:46
  late
• 18:46
  in
• 18:46
  the
• 18:47
  season.
• 18:47
  You
• 18:47
  know,
• 18:48
  this
• 18:48
  isn't
• 18:48
  a
• 18:48
  training
• 18:49
  camp.
• 18:49
  This
• 18:49
  is
• 18:49
  late
• 18:50
  in
• 18:50
  the
• 18:50
  year,
• 18:51
  and
• 18:51
  you're
• 18:51
  coming
• 18:51
  in
• 18:52
  and
• 18:52
  joining
• 18:52
  a
• 18:53
  team,
• 18:53
  a
• 18:53
  new,
• 18:54
  you
• 18:54
  know,
• 18:54
  a
• 18:54
  new
• 18:54
  team
• 18:55
  for
• 18:55
  me.
• 18:55
  And
• 18:56
  I
• 18:56
  can't
• 18:57
  say
• 18:57
  enough
• 18:57
  about
• 18:58
  the
• 18:58
  character.
• 18:59
  You
• 18:59
  don't
• 18:59
  win
• 18:59
  all
• 19:00
  those
• 19:00
  championships
• 19:01
  without
• 19:01
  having
• 19:01
  great
• 19:01
  character
• 19:02
  players.
• 19:03
  And
• 19:04
  Bill
• 19:04
  Torrey
• 19:04
  and
• 19:04
  Al
• 19:05
  Arbor
• 19:05
  throughout
• 19:05
  the
• 19:06
  whole
• 19:06
  organization.
• 19:07
  They
• 19:07
  just
• 19:07
  made
• 19:07
  me
• 19:08
  feel
• 19:08
  welcome.
• 19:09
  And.
• 19:10
  And
• 19:10
  then,
• 19:12
  as
• 19:12
  I
• 19:12
  say,
• 19:13
  I
• 19:13
  just
• 19:13
  got
• 19:13
  swept
• 19:13
  up
• 19:14
  in
• 19:14
  this
• 19:14
  wave
• 19:14
  of
• 19:15
  just
• 19:16
  a
• 19:16
  team
• 19:17
  on
• 19:17
  the
• 19:18
  precipice
• 19:18
  of
• 19:19
  going
• 19:20
  and
• 19:20
  becoming
• 19:20
  a
• 19:20
  dynasty
• 19:21
  at
• 19:21
  that
• 19:21
  time.
• 19:21
  Right.
• 19:22
  All
• 19:23
  hall
• 19:23
  of
• 19:23
  Famers
• 19:24
  deserve
• 19:25
  to
• 19:25
  be
• 19:25
  there.
• 19:26
  All
• 19:26
  the
• 19:26
  guys
• 19:26
  that
• 19:27
  you
• 19:28
  met
• 19:28
  with
• 19:28
  when
• 19:29
  you
• 19:29
  joined
• 19:29
  the
• 19:29
  islanders
• 19:30
  now
• 19:31
  in
• 19:31
  1984,
• 19:32
  the
• 19:33
  goal
• 19:33
  that
• 19:33
  you
• 19:33
  scored
• 19:34
  to
• 19:34
  beat
• 19:34
  the
• 19:34
  Rangers,
• 19:35
  how
• 19:35
  does
• 19:35
  that
• 19:35
  fit
• 19:36
  in
• 19:36
  your
• 19:36
  career
• 19:36
  as
• 19:37
  far
• 19:37
  as
• 19:37
  highlights
• 19:38
  go?
• 19:39
  Well,
• 19:39
  as
• 19:39
  an
• 19:39
  individual
• 19:40
  highlight,
• 19:40
  it's
• 19:41
  right
• 19:41
  probably
• 19:41
  at
• 19:42
  the
• 19:42
  top.
• 19:42
  You
• 19:42
  know,
• 19:43
  I
• 19:43
  was
• 19:43
  a
• 19:43
  guy
• 19:44
  that
• 19:44
  didn't
• 19:44
  score
• 19:44
  a
• 19:44
  Whole
• 19:44
  lot
• 19:45
  of
• 19:45
  goals.
• 19:45
  I
• 19:45
  think
• 19:45
  I
• 19:45
  had
• 19:45
  11,
• 19:47
  I
• 19:47
  think
• 19:47
  I
• 19:47
  had
• 19:47
  something
• 19:48
  like,
• 19:49
  I
• 19:49
  don't
• 19:49
  know,
• 19:49
  17
• 19:50
  regular
• 19:50
  season
• 19:51
  goals
• 19:51
  in
• 19:51
  10
• 19:51
  years
• 19:51
  and
• 19:52
  I
• 19:52
  had
• 19:52
  11
• 19:52
  playoff
• 19:53
  goals.
• 19:54
  Three
• 19:54
  of
• 19:54
  them
• 19:54
  were
• 19:54
  overtime.
• 19:55
  So
• 19:56
  as
• 19:56
  I
• 19:57
  kind
• 19:57
  of
• 19:57
  jokingly
• 19:58
  say,
• 19:58
  Mike
• 19:58
  Bossi
• 19:59
  doesn't
• 19:59
  remember
• 20:00
  all
• 20:00
  his
• 20:00
  goals,
• 20:00
  but
• 20:01
  I
• 20:01
  remember
• 20:01
  all
• 20:01
  mine.
• 20:04
  But
• 20:04
  in
• 20:04
  the
• 20:05
  course
• 20:05
  of
• 20:05
  writing
• 20:05
  the
• 20:05
  book,
• 20:06
  I've
• 20:06
  had,
• 20:06
  you
• 20:06
  know,
• 20:07
  some
• 20:07
  stats
• 20:07
  thrown
• 20:08
  at
• 20:08
  me
• 20:08
  and,
• 20:09
  you
• 20:09
  know,
• 20:09
  they
• 20:09
  had
• 20:10
  people
• 20:10
  that
• 20:10
  can
• 20:10
  look
• 20:11
  up
• 20:11
  all
• 20:11
  these
• 20:11
  stats
• 20:12
  now.
• 20:12
  And,
• 20:13
  and
• 20:14
  so
• 20:15
  I
• 20:15
  was
• 20:15
  told
• 20:16
  that
• 20:16
  I,
• 20:16
  you
• 20:16
  know,
• 20:17
  in
• 20:17
  that
• 20:17
  five
• 20:17
  year
• 20:18
  run,
• 20:18
  you
• 20:18
  know,
• 20:18
  from
• 20:19
  80
• 20:19
  to
• 20:19
  84,
• 20:20
  the
• 20:20
  five
• 20:21
  Stanley
• 20:21
  cup
• 20:21
  finals,
• 20:22
  that
• 20:23
  I
• 20:23
  ended
• 20:23
  up
• 20:23
  scoring,
• 20:24
  you
• 20:24
  know,
• 20:24
  three
• 20:25
  overtime
• 20:25
  goals,
• 20:26
  and
• 20:26
  that
• 20:26
  was
• 20:26
  more
• 20:26
  than
• 20:27
  anybody
• 20:27
  else
• 20:27
  on
• 20:28
  the
• 20:28
  team.
• 20:29
  Bobby
• 20:30
  Nystrom
• 20:30
  had
• 20:31
  four
• 20:31
  overtime
• 20:32
  goals
• 20:32
  through
• 20:32
  his
• 20:33
  career,
• 20:33
  but
• 20:33
  two
• 20:33
  of
• 20:34
  them
• 20:34
  during
• 20:34
  that,
• 20:34
  that
• 20:35
  five
• 20:35
  year
• 20:35
  run
• 20:36
  there.
• 20:36
  Right.
• 20:37
  So
• 20:37
  how
• 20:38
  do
• 20:38
  you
• 20:38
  explain
• 20:38
  that?
• 20:39
  You
• 20:39
  know,
• 20:39
  I,
• 20:39
  I
• 20:40
  give
• 20:40
  all
• 20:40
  thanks
• 20:41
  to
• 20:41
  the
• 20:41
  hockey
• 20:41
  gods
• 20:42
  because
• 20:43
  I
• 20:44
  wasn't
• 20:44
  a
• 20:44
  goal
• 20:44
  scorer.
• 20:45
  We're
• 20:45
  speaking
• 20:46
  with
• 20:46
  Ken
• 20:46
  Morrow
• 20:47
  tonight
• 20:47
  on
• 20:47
  Sports
• 20:47
  Talk
• 20:48
  New
• 20:48
  York.
• 20:48
  Now.
• 20:49
  Scouting
• 20:50
  I
• 20:50
  always
• 20:51
  say
• 20:52
  in
• 20:52
  baseball,
• 20:53
  scouts
• 20:54
  do
• 20:54
  not
• 20:54
  get
• 20:55
  the
• 20:55
  credit
• 20:55
  they
• 20:55
  deserve.
• 20:56
  I
• 20:56
  always
• 20:57
  tell
• 20:57
  people
• 20:58
  that
• 20:58
  there
• 20:58
  should
• 20:58
  be
• 20:58
  a
• 20:59
  scout
• 20:59
  swing
• 20:59
  in
• 21:00
  Cooperstown
• 21:01
  because
• 21:02
  they're
• 21:03
  very
• 21:03
  unsung
• 21:04
  heroes
• 21:04
  when
• 21:05
  it
• 21:05
  comes
• 21:05
  to
• 21:05
  the
• 21:05
  sports
• 21:06
  world.
• 21:07
  What
• 21:07
  would
• 21:07
  be
• 21:07
  a
• 21:07
  typical
• 21:08
  week
• 21:08
  for
• 21:08
  a
• 21:08
  scout
• 21:09
  in
• 21:09
  the
• 21:09
  National
• 21:09
  Hockey
• 21:10
  League?
• 21:10
  Ken
• 21:12
  well,
• 21:13
  I
• 21:13
  can
• 21:13
  tell
• 21:13
  you,
• 21:13
  I
• 21:13
  mean,
• 21:13
  I've
• 21:14
  been
• 21:14
  doing
• 21:14
  it
• 21:14
  for
• 21:14
  over
• 21:14
  30
• 21:15
  years
• 21:15
  now
• 21:16
  and
• 21:16
  it's
• 21:16
  changed.
• 21:17
  I
• 21:17
  can
• 21:17
  tell
• 21:17
  you.
• 21:17
  I
• 21:18
  was
• 21:18
  the,
• 21:19
  I
• 21:19
  think
• 21:20
  I
• 21:20
  was
• 21:20
  the
• 21:21
  first
• 21:21
  full
• 21:22
  time
• 21:22
  pro
• 21:23
  scout
• 21:23
  for
• 21:23
  the
• 21:23
  New
• 21:24
  York
• 21:24
  Islanders
• 21:24
  when
• 21:24
  I
• 21:24
  was
• 21:25
  hired
• 21:25
  in
• 21:25
  1992
• 21:26
  by
• 21:26
  Bill
• 21:26
  Tory.
• 21:27
  And
• 21:28
  at
• 21:28
  that
• 21:28
  time
• 21:28
  he
• 21:29
  told
• 21:29
  me,
• 21:29
  it's
• 21:29
  going
• 21:29
  to
• 21:29
  take
• 21:29
  you,
• 21:30
  you
• 21:30
  know,
• 21:30
  two
• 21:30
  or
• 21:31
  three
• 21:31
  years
• 21:31
  to
• 21:31
  just
• 21:31
  go
• 21:32
  out,
• 21:32
  see
• 21:32
  games
• 21:33
  and
• 21:34
  get
• 21:35
  a
• 21:35
  feel
• 21:35
  for
• 21:36
  players
• 21:36
  and
• 21:37
  get
• 21:37
  a
• 21:37
  feel
• 21:37
  for,
• 21:38
  you
• 21:38
  know,
• 21:39
  what
• 21:39
  you're
• 21:39
  looking
• 21:39
  for.
• 21:40
  And
• 21:40
  he
• 21:41
  was
• 21:41
  absolutely
• 21:41
  right.
• 21:42
  It
• 21:42
  took
• 21:42
  a
• 21:42
  couple
• 21:42
  years
• 21:43
  to
• 21:43
  kind
• 21:43
  of
• 21:44
  get
• 21:44
  your
• 21:44
  bearings
• 21:45
  on
• 21:45
  doing
• 21:46
  something
• 21:46
  like
• 21:46
  that.
• 21:47
  And
• 21:47
  at
• 21:47
  the
• 21:48
  time
• 21:48
  I
• 21:48
  was
• 21:48
  the
• 21:48
  only
• 21:49
  one.
• 21:49
  So
• 21:49
  I
• 21:49
  was
• 21:50
  covering
• 21:51
  not
• 21:51
  only
• 21:51
  the
• 21:51
  NHL,
• 21:52
  I
• 21:52
  was
• 21:52
  covering
• 21:52
  the
• 21:53
  American
• 21:53
  Hockey
• 21:53
  League
• 21:54
  and
• 21:55
  the
• 21:55
  International
• 21:55
  Hockey
• 21:56
  League,
• 21:56
  which
• 21:56
  were
• 21:56
  the
• 21:57
  two
• 21:57
  top
• 21:57
  minor
• 21:57
  leagues.
• 21:58
  So
• 21:58
  there
• 21:58
  were
• 21:59
  over
• 21:59
  60
• 22:00
  teams
• 22:00
  that
• 22:00
  won.
• 22:01
  One
• 22:01
  guy
• 22:01
  I
• 22:02
  was
• 22:02
  covering.
• 22:02
  So
• 22:02
  it
• 22:02
  was
• 22:02
  overwhelming
• 22:04
  at
• 22:04
  that
• 22:05
  time.
• 22:05
  But
• 22:05
  as
• 22:06
  years
• 22:06
  went
• 22:06
  along,
• 22:08
  we
• 22:08
  added
• 22:08
  more
• 22:08
  people.
• 22:09
  We
• 22:10
  had
• 22:10
  to
• 22:10
  and
• 22:11
  every
• 22:11
  organization
• 22:12
  did
• 22:13
  to
• 22:13
  where
• 22:13
  you
• 22:13
  may
• 22:14
  now
• 22:14
  have
• 22:15
  four
• 22:15
  or
• 22:15
  five
• 22:16
  dedicated
• 22:17
  pro
• 22:18
  scouts.
• 22:18
  And
• 22:19
  when
• 22:20
  I
• 22:20
  first
• 22:20
  started,
• 22:20
  it
• 22:21
  was
• 22:21
  more
• 22:21
  about
• 22:21
  trades.
• 22:23
  You
• 22:24
  know,
• 22:24
  you
• 22:24
  were
• 22:24
  keeping
• 22:25
  track
• 22:25
  of
• 22:25
  all
• 22:25
  the
• 22:26
  other
• 22:26
  organizations
• 22:27
  for
• 22:28
  case
• 22:28
  you
• 22:28
  were
• 22:29
  going
• 22:29
  to
• 22:29
  make
• 22:29
  a
• 22:29
  trade.
• 22:30
  And
• 22:30
  there
• 22:31
  was
• 22:31
  very
• 22:31
  little
• 22:31
  free
• 22:32
  agency
• 22:32
  at
• 22:33
  that
• 22:33
  time
• 22:33
  in
• 22:33
  the
• 22:33
  NHL.
• 22:35
  Not
• 22:35
  a
• 22:35
  lot
• 22:35
  of
• 22:35
  movement
• 22:36
  of
• 22:36
  players
• 22:36
  through
• 22:37
  free
• 22:37
  agency,
• 22:37
  but
• 22:38
  it's
• 22:38
  totally
• 22:39
  flipped
• 22:40
  to
• 22:40
  where
• 22:40
  nowadays
• 22:41
  most
• 22:41
  of
• 22:42
  your
• 22:42
  scouting
• 22:43
  is
• 22:43
  done
• 22:44
  because
• 22:44
  there's
• 22:45
  hundreds
• 22:45
  of
• 22:45
  free
• 22:45
  agents
• 22:46
  every
• 22:46
  summer
• 22:47
  now.
• 22:47
  And
• 22:48
  making
• 22:48
  a
• 22:48
  trade
• 22:49
  is
• 22:50
  much
• 22:50
  more
• 22:50
  difficult
• 22:51
  with
• 22:51
  the
• 22:51
  salary
• 22:51
  cap
• 22:52
  and
• 22:52
  trying
• 22:53
  to
• 22:53
  make
• 22:53
  the
• 22:53
  money
• 22:54
  and
• 22:54
  the
• 22:54
  hockey
• 22:55
  end
• 22:55
  of
• 22:55
  it
• 22:55
  works.
• 22:55
  So
• 22:57
  a
• 22:57
  lot
• 22:57
  of
• 22:57
  changes.
• 22:58
  It's
• 22:58
  all
• 22:58
  computerized
• 22:59
  now.
• 22:59
  When
• 23:00
  I
• 23:00
  started,
• 23:00
  it
• 23:00
  was
• 23:01
  writing
• 23:02
  out
• 23:02
  reports
• 23:02
  on
• 23:03
  paper
• 23:03
  and
• 23:03
  sending
• 23:03
  in
• 23:04
  carbon
• 23:05
  copies
• 23:06
  to
• 23:06
  faxing
• 23:07
  in
• 23:07
  reports
• 23:08
  to.
• 23:08
  Now
• 23:09
  everything's
• 23:09
  done
• 23:09
  on
• 23:09
  the
• 23:09
  computer.
• 23:10
  Right.
• 23:12
  Gotta
• 23:12
  make
• 23:13
  things
• 23:13
  a
• 23:13
  little
• 23:13
  bit
• 23:14
  easier
• 23:14
  for
• 23:14
  you
• 23:14
  guys
• 23:15
  doing
• 23:15
  things
• 23:16
  online.
• 23:18
  What
• 23:19
  made
• 23:19
  you
• 23:19
  want
• 23:19
  to
• 23:20
  steer
• 23:20
  your
• 23:20
  career
• 23:20
  towards
• 23:21
  scouting,
• 23:22
  Ken?
• 23:22
  Was
• 23:23
  it
• 23:23
  just
• 23:23
  that
• 23:23
  the
• 23:23
  job
• 23:24
  was
• 23:24
  offered
• 23:24
  to
• 23:24
  you
• 23:25
  or
• 23:25
  you
• 23:25
  also
• 23:26
  had
• 23:26
  an
• 23:26
  interest
• 23:27
  in
• 23:27
  that
• 23:28
  direction?
• 23:29
  I
• 23:30
  didn't.
• 23:30
  You
• 23:30
  know,
• 23:30
  as
• 23:30
  a
• 23:30
  player,
• 23:31
  your
• 23:31
  total
• 23:32
  focus
• 23:32
  is
• 23:32
  on
• 23:33
  playing
• 23:33
  rightfully
• 23:34
  so.
• 23:35
  And
• 23:36
  my
• 23:36
  career
• 23:37
  ended,
• 23:37
  as
• 23:37
  you
• 23:37
  mentioned.
• 23:38
  I
• 23:38
  played
• 23:38
  10
• 23:38
  years.
• 23:39
  My
• 23:40
  career
• 23:40
  ended
• 23:40
  in
• 23:41
  1989
• 23:42
  and
• 23:43
  it
• 23:43
  was
• 23:43
  abruptly.
• 23:44
  I
• 23:44
  wasn't
• 23:44
  ready
• 23:45
  for
• 23:45
  it.
• 23:46
  Wanted
• 23:46
  to
• 23:46
  keep
• 23:46
  playing,
• 23:47
  but
• 23:47
  just
• 23:47
  wasn't
• 23:47
  able
• 23:48
  to.
• 23:49
  So
• 23:49
  I
• 23:49
  kind
• 23:50
  of
• 23:50
  had
• 23:50
  to
• 23:50
  change
• 23:50
  course.
• 23:51
  And
• 23:51
  as
• 23:52
  I
• 23:52
  explained
• 23:52
  in
• 23:52
  the
• 23:53
  book,
• 23:53
  I
• 23:53
  didn't
• 23:53
  have
• 23:53
  a
• 23:53
  plan
• 23:54
  B
• 23:54
  at
• 23:54
  that
• 23:54
  time,
• 23:56
  but
• 23:57
  I
• 23:57
  had
• 23:57
  a
• 23:58
  coaching
• 23:59
  position
• 24:00
  offered
• 24:00
  to
• 24:00
  me,
• 24:01
  which
• 24:01
  I
• 24:02
  took
• 24:02
  in
• 24:02
  the
• 24:02
  minor
• 24:02
  leagues
• 24:03
  and
• 24:03
  I
• 24:03
  did.
• 24:04
  Coached
• 24:05
  in
• 24:05
  the
• 24:05
  minor
• 24:05
  leagues
• 24:06
  for
• 24:06
  a
• 24:06
  couple
• 24:06
  years
• 24:07
  as
• 24:07
  an
• 24:07
  assistant
• 24:07
  coach
• 24:08
  and
• 24:08
  then
• 24:09
  one
• 24:09
  year
• 24:09
  back
• 24:09
  with
• 24:10
  the
• 24:10
  Islanders
• 24:10
  with
• 24:10
  Al
• 24:11
  Arbor
• 24:11
  and
• 24:11
  Bill
• 24:11
  Torrey
• 24:12
  again
• 24:12
  as
• 24:12
  an
• 24:12
  assistant
• 24:13
  coach
• 24:15
  in
• 24:15
  91,
• 24:16
  92.
• 24:17
  And
• 24:17
  then
• 24:17
  at
• 24:17
  the
• 24:17
  end
• 24:18
  of
• 24:18
  that
• 24:18
  third
• 24:18
  year
• 24:18
  of
• 24:19
  coaching,
• 24:20
  I
• 24:20
  sat
• 24:20
  down
• 24:20
  with
• 24:21
  Bill
• 24:21
  Torre
• 24:21
  and
• 24:21
  I
• 24:22
  just,
• 24:22
  I
• 24:22
  had,
• 24:22
  you
• 24:23
  know,
• 24:23
  lived
• 24:23
  away
• 24:23
  from
• 24:23
  my
• 24:24
  family
• 24:24
  for
• 24:24
  two
• 24:24
  of
• 24:24
  those
• 24:25
  three
• 24:25
  years
• 24:25
  coaching.
• 24:26
  Didn't
• 24:27
  want
• 24:27
  to
• 24:27
  do
• 24:27
  that
• 24:28
  anymore,
• 24:28
  didn't
• 24:29
  want
• 24:29
  to
• 24:29
  chase
• 24:29
  coaching
• 24:30
  jobs.
• 24:30
  And
• 24:31
  Bill
• 24:32
  had
• 24:32
  offered
• 24:33
  me
• 24:34
  to,
• 24:34
  you
• 24:35
  know,
• 24:35
  to
• 24:35
  become
• 24:35
  a
• 24:35
  pro
• 24:36
  scout
• 24:37
  and
• 24:38
  I
• 24:39
  accepted
• 24:40
  the
• 24:40
  offer.
• 24:41
  And
• 24:42
  I
• 24:42
  haven't
• 24:42
  looked
• 24:43
  back.
• 24:44
  Well,
• 24:44
  we
• 24:44
  can
• 24:44
  see
• 24:45
  why
• 24:45
  you
• 24:45
  were
• 24:45
  held
• 24:45
  in
• 24:46
  such
• 24:46
  high
• 24:46
  regard
• 24:47
  by
• 24:48
  the
• 24:48
  man
• 24:48
  with
• 24:48
  the
• 24:49
  bow
• 24:49
  tie.
• 24:50
  And
• 24:50
  I
• 24:51
  have
• 24:51
  to
• 24:51
  ask
• 24:51
  you,
• 24:52
  Ken,
• 24:53
  you
• 24:53
  played
• 24:53
  for
• 24:54
  Al
• 24:54
  Arbour,
• 24:55
  a
• 24:55
  Hall
• 24:55
  of
• 24:55
  Famer,
• 24:56
  Herb
• 24:56
  Brooks,
• 24:57
  an
• 24:57
  immortal
• 24:59
  contrast,
• 25:00
  the
• 25:00
  styles
• 25:00
  of
• 25:00
  the
• 25:01
  two
• 25:01
  for
• 25:01
  us,
• 25:01
  Al
• 25:02
  Arbour
• 25:02
  versus
• 25:03
  Herb
• 25:03
  Brooks.
• 25:05
  I
• 25:05
  will.
• 25:06
  And
• 25:06
  I,
• 25:06
  you
• 25:07
  know,
• 25:07
  I'm
• 25:07
  going
• 25:07
  to
• 25:07
  add
• 25:08
  in
• 25:08
  one
• 25:08
  more
• 25:08
  coach,
• 25:09
  my
• 25:09
  college
• 25:09
  coach,
• 25:10
  Ron
• 25:10
  Mason.
• 25:12
  He
• 25:13
  was
• 25:13
  at
• 25:13
  one
• 25:13
  point
• 25:14
  the
• 25:14
  all
• 25:14
  time
• 25:14
  winningest
• 25:15
  college
• 25:15
  coach
• 25:15
  in
• 25:16
  history
• 25:16
  until
• 25:17
  just
• 25:17
  a
• 25:17
  few
• 25:17
  years
• 25:17
  ago
• 25:18
  he
• 25:18
  got
• 25:18
  surpassed.
• 25:19
  So
• 25:19
  I,
• 25:20
  you
• 25:20
  know,
• 25:20
  through
• 25:20
  a
• 25:21
  15
• 25:21
  year
• 25:22
  playing
• 25:22
  career,
• 25:23
  if
• 25:23
  you
• 25:23
  include
• 25:24
  four
• 25:24
  years
• 25:24
  of
• 25:24
  college,
• 25:25
  one
• 25:25
  year
• 25:25
  with
• 25:25
  her
• 25:26
  Brooks
• 25:26
  and
• 25:27
  10
• 25:27
  years
• 25:27
  with
• 25:28
  Al
• 25:28
  Arbor,
• 25:28
  I
• 25:28
  coached
• 25:29
  or
• 25:29
  I
• 25:29
  was,
• 25:30
  I
• 25:30
  played
• 25:30
  for
• 25:31
  three
• 25:32
  all
• 25:32
  time
• 25:32
  great
• 25:32
  legendary
• 25:33
  coaches,
• 25:34
  you
• 25:34
  know,
• 25:34
  at
• 25:34
  each
• 25:35
  level
• 25:37
  they
• 25:37
  were
• 25:37
  all
• 25:38
  similar
• 25:39
  in
• 25:39
  that,
• 25:39
  you
• 25:39
  know,
• 25:40
  they
• 25:40
  were
• 25:40
  all
• 25:40
  demanding,
• 25:41
  they
• 25:41
  all
• 25:41
  had
• 25:41
  high
• 25:42
  standards.
• 25:43
  They
• 25:43
  were
• 25:43
  all
• 25:44
  hard
• 25:44
  on
• 25:45
  players,
• 25:45
  but
• 25:45
  in
• 25:46
  a
• 25:46
  good
• 25:46
  way,
• 25:47
  you
• 25:47
  know,
• 25:47
  they
• 25:47
  brought
• 25:47
  out
• 25:48
  the
• 25:48
  best
• 25:48
  in
• 25:48
  you.
• 25:50
  The
• 25:51
  differences,
• 25:51
  I
• 25:51
  would
• 25:52
  say,
• 25:52
  between
• 25:53
  Herb
• 25:53
  and
• 25:53
  Al
• 25:53
  was
• 25:54
  that
• 25:54
  Herb
• 25:54
  was
• 25:56
  very
• 25:56
  innovative.
• 25:57
  You
• 25:58
  know,
• 25:58
  he
• 25:58
  was
• 25:58
  30
• 25:59
  years
• 25:59
  ahead
• 25:59
  of
• 25:59
  his
• 26:00
  time
• 26:00
  with
• 26:00
  how
• 26:00
  he
• 26:00
  wanted
• 26:01
  to
• 26:01
  play
• 26:01
  the
• 26:01
  game.
• 26:01
  Puck
• 26:02
  possession.
• 26:03
  You
• 26:04
  know,
• 26:04
  he
• 26:05
  was
• 26:05
  trying
• 26:06
  to
• 26:06
  play
• 26:06
  a
• 26:06
  game
• 26:06
  back
• 26:07
  in
• 26:07
  the
• 26:07
  80s
• 26:07
  that
• 26:07
  the
• 26:08
  NHL
• 26:08
  got
• 26:08
  to
• 26:09
  in
• 26:09
  the
• 26:09
  early
• 26:09
  2000s,
• 26:10
  you
• 26:10
  know,
• 26:10
  more
• 26:11
  based
• 26:11
  on
• 26:11
  skill
• 26:12
  and
• 26:12
  speed,
• 26:14
  not
• 26:14

• 26:14
  it
• 26:15
  in
• 26:15
  puck
• 26:15
  possession.
• 26:17
  So
• 26:18
  Herb
• 26:18
  was
• 26:18
  very
• 26:18
  innovative,
• 26:19
  very
• 26:20
  psychological,
• 26:21
  if
• 26:21
  you
• 26:21
  want
• 26:22
  to
• 26:22
  say
• 26:22
  that.
• 26:22
  You
• 26:22
  know,
• 26:23
  a
• 26:23
  lot
• 26:23
  of
• 26:24
  mind
• 26:25
  games
• 26:25
  knew
• 26:26
  how
• 26:26
  to
• 26:26
  get
• 26:27
  the
• 26:27
  best
• 26:27
  out
• 26:27
  of
• 26:28
  players,
• 26:28
  you
• 26:28
  know,
• 26:29
  through,
• 26:30
  you
• 26:30
  know,
• 26:31
  pushing
• 26:31
  the
• 26:31
  right
• 26:31
  buttons.
• 26:32
  And
• 26:34
  I
• 26:34
  know
• 26:34
  the
• 26:34
  players
• 26:34
  that
• 26:35
  played
• 26:35
  for
• 26:35
  Herbert
• 26:36
  at
• 26:36
  Minnesota.
• 26:36
  We
• 26:37
  had
• 26:37
  10
• 26:37
  of
• 26:37
  them
• 26:37
  on
• 26:37
  our

• 26:38
  that
• 26:38
  played
• 26:38
  for
• 26:38
  them.
• 26:39
  They
• 26:39
  told
• 26:39
  us
• 26:39
  we
• 26:40
  got
• 26:40
  the
• 26:40
  soft
• 26:40
  version
• 26:41
  of
• 26:41
  Herb
• 26:41
  with
• 26:42
  the
• 26:42
  Olympic

• 26:44
  on

  Yeah,

  You

  you

• 27:05
  didn't
• 27:05

• 31:39
  pregnant
• 31:39
  with
• 31:39
  me.
• 31:40
  And
• 31:40
  that's
• 31:41
  how
• 31:41
  I
• 31:41
  lost
• 31:41
  my
• 31:41
  hearing.
• 31:42
  I
• 31:42
  had
• 31:42
  95%
• 31:43
  hearing
• 31:43
  loss.
• 31:45
  Yeah,
• 31:46
  that
• 31:46
  is
• 31:47
  a
• 31:47
  real
• 31:47
  tragedy.
• 31:49
  Now,
• 31:49
  you
• 31:49
  excelled
• 31:50
  in
• 31:50
  baseball,
• 31:51
  basketball
• 31:52
  and
• 31:52
  soccer
• 31:52
  in
• 31:53
  high
• 31:53
  school.
• 31:54
  You
• 31:54
  attended
• 31:54
  William
• 31:55
  and
• 31:55
  Mary
• 31:55
  after
• 31:56
  high
• 31:56
  school
• 31:56
  and
• 31:57
  you
• 31:57
  were
• 31:57
  the
• 31:57
  starting
• 31:58
  point
• 31:58
  guard
• 31:58
  on
• 31:58
  the
• 31:59
  basketball
• 31:59
  team.
• 31:59
  So
• 32:00
  you
• 32:00
  were
• 32:00
  pretty
• 32:00
  well
• 32:01
  rounded
• 32:01
  athlete.
• 32:05
  Yes.
• 32:06
  Yeah.
• 32:07
  Yes.
• 32:08
  I
• 32:08
  would
• 32:08
  have
• 32:09
  the
• 32:09
  opportunity
• 32:10
  to
• 32:10
  play
• 32:10
  all
• 32:10
  the
• 32:10
  different
• 32:10
  sports
• 32:11
  and
• 32:11
  soccer,
• 32:12
  but
• 32:12
  that's
• 32:12
  my
• 32:13
  best
• 32:13
  sport.
• 32:15
  But
• 32:15
  I've
• 32:16
  always
• 32:16
  wanted
• 32:16
  to
• 32:16
  play
• 32:16
  college
• 32:17
  basketball.
• 32:19
  And
• 32:19
  sure
• 32:20
  enough,
• 32:20
  I
• 32:21
  was
• 32:21
  drafting
• 32:21
  out
• 32:22
  of
• 32:22
  high
• 32:22
  school
• 32:23
  and
• 32:24
  I
• 32:24
  had
• 32:25
  already
• 32:25
  accepted
• 32:25
  a
• 32:26
  basketball
• 32:26
  scholarship
• 32:27
  through
• 32:27
  the
• 32:28
  College
• 32:28
  of
• 32:28
  William.
• 32:29
  9.
• 32:29
  So
• 32:30
  my
• 32:30
  dad
• 32:30
  was
• 32:30
  able
• 32:30
  to
• 32:31
  negotiate
• 32:31
  a
• 32:31
  contract,
• 32:32
  went
• 32:33
  there
• 32:34
  with
• 32:34
  the
• 32:34
  mess
• 32:35
  detecting
• 32:37
  me
• 32:37
  that
• 32:38
  they
• 32:38
  were
• 32:38
  allowed
• 32:38
  me
• 32:38
  to
• 32:39
  go
• 32:39
  to
• 32:39
  college
• 32:39
  on
• 32:40
  a
• 32:40
  full
• 32:40
  basketball
• 32:41
  skeleton
• 32:42
  and
• 32:42
  still
• 32:42
  be
• 32:42
  able
• 32:42
  to
• 32:43
  play
• 32:43
  professional
• 32:44
  baseball
• 32:45
  during
• 32:45
  the
• 32:45
  summers.
• 32:46
  The
• 32:46
  race
• 32:47
  upgraded
• 32:48
  college
• 32:49
  from
• 32:49
  August
• 32:50
  15th
• 32:50
  all
• 32:50
  the
• 32:51
  way
• 32:51
  through
• 32:51
  May
• 32:51
  15th.
• 32:52
  And
• 32:52
  that's
• 32:52
  why
• 32:53
  quality
• 32:56
  my
• 32:56
  elite
• 32:56
  team
• 32:57
  from
• 32:57
  May
• 32:58
  15th
• 32:58
  through
• 32:58
  August
• 32:59
  15th.
• 33:00
  I
• 33:00
  did
• 33:00
  that
• 33:00
  for
• 33:01
  four
• 33:01
  years
• 33:02
  until
• 33:02
  I
• 33:02
  graduated
• 33:03
  from
• 33:03
  college
• 33:04
  and
• 33:04
  I
• 33:05
  became
• 33:05
  a
• 33:05
  full
• 33:06
  time
• 33:06
  baseball
• 33:06
  player.
• 33:07
  It
• 33:08
  was
• 33:08
  important
• 33:08
  for
• 33:08
  me
• 33:09
  because
• 33:09
  there's
• 33:10
  no
• 33:10
  guarantee
• 33:11
  of
• 33:11
  being
• 33:11
  a
• 33:11
  professional
• 33:12
  at
• 33:12
  me
• 33:14
  and
• 33:14
  it
• 33:14
  was
• 33:14
  important
• 33:15
  for
• 33:15
  me
• 33:15
  to
• 33:15
  get
• 33:15
  my
• 33:16
  college
• 33:16
  degree.
• 33:17
  Never
• 33:18
  know
• 33:18
  what
• 33:18
  can
• 33:18
  happen.
• 33:20
  Well,
• 33:21
  we're
• 33:21
  speaking
• 33:21
  with
• 33:21
  Curtis
• 33:22
  Pride
• 33:22
  tonight
• 33:23
  on
• 33:23
  Sports
• 33:23
  Talk
• 33:24
  New
• 33:24
  York.
• 33:24
  Now,
• 33:25
  as
• 33:25
  you
• 33:25
  mentioned,
• 33:26
  Curtis,
• 33:26
  you
• 33:26
  were
• 33:26
  originally
• 33:27
  signed
• 33:28
  by
• 33:28
  the
• 33:28
  Mets,
• 33:29
  but
• 33:30
  we
• 33:30
  know
• 33:30
  the
• 33:31
  Mets
• 33:31
  have
• 33:32
  a
• 33:32
  history
• 33:32
  of
• 33:33
  letting
• 33:33
  talented
• 33:34
  people
• 33:34
  go.
• 33:34
  Don't
• 33:35
  feel
• 33:35
  bad,
• 33:35
  Curtis.
• 33:36
  They
• 33:36
  let
• 33:36
  go
• 33:36
  of
• 33:36
  Nolan
• 33:37
  Ryan
• 33:37
  too.
• 33:38
  So
• 33:39
  you're
• 33:40
  not
• 33:40
  the
• 33:40
  only.
• 33:40
  Now
• 33:41
  you
• 33:41
  became
• 33:41
  the
• 33:41
  first
• 33:42
  deaf
• 33:42
  player
• 33:42
  in
• 33:43
  the
• 33:43
  majors
• 33:43
  since
• 33:44
  dick
• 33:44
  sidepeck
• 33:45
  in
• 33:45
  1945.
• 33:47
  So
• 33:47
  it
• 33:47
  had
• 33:48
  been
• 33:48
  a
• 33:48
  while
• 33:48
  till
• 33:49
  the
• 33:49
  major
• 33:49
  leagues
• 33:50
  had
• 33:50
  someone
• 33:51
  of
• 33:52
  your
• 33:52
  caliber.
• 33:56
  Yeah,
• 33:56
  I
• 33:56
  mean
• 33:56
  I've
• 33:57
  been
• 33:58
  blessed
• 33:58
  to
• 33:58
  have
• 33:59
  the
• 33:59
  opportunity
• 34:00
  to
• 34:00
  play
• 34:00
  the
• 34:01
  major
• 34:01
  leagues
• 34:02
  and
• 34:02
  it
• 34:03
  wasn't
• 34:03
  easy.
• 34:03
  Now
• 34:04
  I
• 34:04
  think
• 34:05
  put
• 34:05
  a
• 34:05
  lot
• 34:05
  of
• 34:05
  time
• 34:05
  in
• 34:06
  recording
• 34:07
  and
• 34:08
  prove
• 34:08
  to
• 34:08
  you
• 34:09
  the
• 34:09
  baseball
• 34:10
  coaches
• 34:10
  know
• 34:11
  general
• 34:12
  managers
• 34:12
  to
• 34:14
  look
• 34:14
  at
• 34:14
  my
• 34:15
  ability,
• 34:16
  not
• 34:17
  my
• 34:17
  disability.
• 34:18
  And
• 34:19
  I
• 34:19
  suggest
• 34:20
  you
• 34:21
  work
• 34:22
  harder
• 34:22
  than
• 34:22
  most
• 34:22
  of
• 34:23
  the
• 34:23
  guys
• 34:24
  you
• 34:24
  want
• 34:24
  to
• 34:24
  see
• 34:24
  babies
• 34:25
  have
• 34:25
  the
• 34:25
  opportunities
• 34:26
  to
• 34:26
  play
• 34:26
  if
• 34:26
  you
• 34:26
  make
• 34:27
  your
• 34:27
  leagues.
• 34:29
  That's
• 34:29
  a
• 34:29
  wonderful
• 34:29
  way
• 34:30
  to
• 34:30
  put
• 34:30
  it,
• 34:30
  Curtis.
• 34:31
  And
• 34:32
  I
• 34:32
  think
• 34:32
  that's
• 34:33
  great
• 34:33
  for
• 34:33
  the
• 34:33
  kids
• 34:34
  and
• 34:34
  the
• 34:35
  people
• 34:35
  with
• 34:35
  impediments
• 34:36
  out
• 34:36
  there
• 34:36
  that
• 34:37
  they
• 34:37
  looked
• 34:37
  at
• 34:37
  your
• 34:38
  ability
• 34:39
  rather
• 34:39
  than
• 34:40
  your
• 34:40
  disability.
• 34:40
  I
• 34:41
  think
• 34:41
  that's
• 34:41
  a
• 34:41
  great,
• 34:42
  a
• 34:42
  great
• 34:42
  thing
• 34:42
  to
• 34:43
  go
• 34:43
  on.
• 34:45
  Yeah,
• 34:46
  very
• 34:46
  good
• 34:47
  point.
• 34:47
  Now,
• 34:48
  your
• 34:48
  first
• 34:48
  major
• 34:48
  league
• 34:49
  hit,
• 34:49
  it
• 34:49
  was
• 34:50
  September
• 34:50
  17,
• 34:51
  1993
• 34:53
  up
• 34:53
  in
• 34:53
  Montreal.
• 34:55
  Do
• 34:55
  you
• 34:55
  remember
• 34:56
  that
• 34:56
  first
• 34:56
  hit,
• 34:57
  Curtis?
• 34:58
  Oh,
• 34:59
  yes,
• 34:59
  yes,
• 35:00
  I
• 35:00
  think
• 35:02
  any
• 35:02
  of
• 35:02
  it
• 35:03
  part
• 35:03
  of
• 35:03
  it.
• 35:03
  The
• 35:03
  most
• 35:04
  emotional
• 35:06
  experience
• 35:09
  in
• 35:09
  my
• 35:09
  Italian
• 35:10
  baseball
• 35:10
  career.
• 35:11
  And
• 35:13
  it
• 35:13
  was
• 35:13
  the
• 35:13
  middle
• 35:14
  of
• 35:14
  the
• 35:14
  penny
• 35:15
  race
• 35:15
  against
• 35:15
  the
• 35:16
  Phillies
• 35:17
  and
• 35:18
  I
• 35:18
  was
• 35:18
  called
• 35:19
  going
• 35:19
  to
• 35:19
  pitch
• 35:19
  in
• 35:20
  and
• 35:22
  yeah,
• 35:22
  he
• 35:22
  did
• 35:22
  a
• 35:23
  21
• 35:23
  double.
• 35:24
  And
• 35:25
  I'm
• 35:25
  standing
• 35:25
  there,
• 35:26
  Jackie
• 35:26
  Bears
• 35:26
  and
• 35:27
  $45
• 35:29
  dance
• 35:29
  to
• 35:29
  them.
• 35:30
  He
• 35:30
  gave
• 35:30
  me
• 35:30
  a
• 35:30
  sandy
• 35:31
  ovation.
• 35:32
  It
• 35:33
  felt
• 35:33
  like
• 35:34
  five,
• 35:35
  ten
• 35:35
  minutes
• 35:35
  standing
• 35:36
  ovation.
• 35:36
  And
• 35:37
  my
• 35:37
  therapist
• 35:37
  couldn't
• 35:38
  call
• 35:38
  me
• 35:38
  over
• 35:40
  while
• 35:40
  they
• 35:40
  were
• 35:41
  dancing
• 35:41
  the
• 35:41
  Piston.
• 35:42
  And
• 35:43
  my
• 35:43
  therapist
• 35:44
  could
• 35:44
  call
• 35:44
  me
• 35:45
  over
• 35:45
  and
• 35:45
  told
• 35:45
  me
• 35:46
  he
• 35:46
  poured
• 35:46
  me
• 35:46
  in
• 35:46
  my
• 35:46
  helmet.
• 35:47
  Yeah.
• 35:48
  So
• 35:48
  I
• 35:48
  thought
• 35:48
  there
• 35:48
  was
• 35:48
  something
• 35:49
  in
• 35:49
  my
• 35:49
  helmet.
• 35:50
  I
• 35:50
  said
• 35:50
  no,
• 35:50
  just
• 35:51
  take
• 35:51
  my
• 35:51
  helmet
• 35:52
  off
• 35:52
  my
• 35:52
  head
• 35:52
  and
• 35:53
  kiss
• 35:53
  you
• 35:53
  the
• 35:54
  crown
• 35:54
  X.
• 35:54
  And
• 35:54
  I
• 35:54
  was
• 35:55
  down.
• 35:55
  And
• 35:55
  so
• 35:56
  if
• 35:56
  I
• 35:56
  did
• 35:56
  that,
• 35:57
  that's
• 35:57
  where
• 35:57
  everybody
• 35:57
  goes
• 35:58
  going
• 35:58
  crazy.
• 35:59
  It
• 35:59
  was
• 36:00
  very
• 36:00
  emotional.
• 36:01
  I
• 36:01
  would
• 36:01
  never
• 36:02
  ever
• 36:02
  forget
• 36:02
  it.
• 36:03
  What
• 36:03
  an
• 36:04
  experience
• 36:04
  that
• 36:05
  must
• 36:05
  have
• 36:05
  Been
• 36:05
  Curtis,
• 36:06
  do
• 36:06
  you
• 36:06
  remember
• 36:06
  what
• 36:07
  pitch
• 36:07
  you
• 36:07
  hit?
• 36:10
  It
• 36:10
  was
• 36:11
  the
• 36:11
  bass
• 36:11
  bars
• 36:11
  with
• 36:11
  the
• 36:12
  sticker
• 36:12
  wing.
• 36:13
  There
• 36:14
  you
• 36:14
  go.
• 36:15
  Never
• 36:16
  forget,
• 36:16
  folks,
• 36:19
  Curtis
• 36:19
  lit
• 36:20
  that
• 36:20
  one
• 36:20
  up.
• 36:20
  Now
• 36:21
  there's
• 36:21
  a
• 36:22
  story
• 36:22
  in
• 36:23
  the
• 36:23
  book,
• 36:23
  Curtis,
• 36:24
  that
• 36:24
  I
• 36:24
  want
• 36:24
  you
• 36:25
  to
• 36:25
  talk
• 36:25
  to
• 36:25
  the
• 36:25
  folks
• 36:26
  about
• 36:26
  without
• 36:26
  giving
• 36:27
  away
• 36:27
  the
• 36:27
  whole
• 36:27
  book.
• 36:29
  There's
• 36:29
  a
• 36:29
  story
• 36:29
  about
• 36:30
  Greg
• 36:30
  Maddox
• 36:31
  who
• 36:31
  came
• 36:32
  to
• 36:32
  know
• 36:32
  about
• 36:32
  you
• 36:33
  and
• 36:34
  he
• 36:34
  instituted
• 36:35
  a
• 36:35
  little
• 36:36
  habit
• 36:37
  that's
• 36:38
  continued
• 36:38
  to
• 36:38
  this
• 36:39
  day.
• 36:39
  Tell
• 36:39
  us
• 36:39
  about
• 36:40
  Greg
• 36:40
  Maddox.
• 36:42
  Yeah,
• 36:43
  I
• 36:43
  know
• 36:44
  where
• 36:44
  I
• 36:44
  was
• 36:44
  with
• 36:44
  the
• 36:44
  Montreal
• 36:47
  villain
• 36:47
  Expos.
• 36:48
  And
• 36:48
  I
• 36:49
  was
• 36:49
  deleted
• 36:49
  that
• 36:49
  down
• 36:50
  and
• 36:51
  I
• 36:51
  was
• 36:51
  the
• 36:51
  talk
• 36:51
  as
• 36:52
  you
• 36:52
  Graymatic's
• 36:53
  brother,
• 36:54
  Mike
• 36:54
  Maddox.
• 36:55
  Mike
• 36:55
  Maddox.
• 36:56
  And
• 36:56
  he
• 36:57
  noticed
• 36:57
  I
• 36:57
  was
• 36:58
  watching
• 36:58
  the
• 36:59
  pictures,
• 36:59
  had
• 37:00
  a
• 37:00
  conference
• 37:00
  on
• 37:00
  the
• 37:01
  mountain
• 37:01
  with
• 37:01
  the
• 37:01
  kisses
• 37:02
  and
• 37:02
  I
• 37:02
  could
• 37:02
  actually
• 37:03
  lip
• 37:04
  read
• 37:04
  what
• 37:05
  they
• 37:05
  say.
• 37:06
  And
• 37:06
  so
• 37:06
  that's
• 37:07
  how
• 37:07
  Mike
• 37:07
  knew.
• 37:08
  So
• 37:08
  he
• 37:08
  kind
• 37:09
  of
• 37:09
  told
• 37:09
  his
• 37:09
  brother
• 37:10
  and
• 37:10
  David.
• 37:11
  So.
• 37:11
  Aha.
• 37:12
  So
• 37:12
  he
• 37:13
  made
• 37:13
  a
• 37:13
  point
• 37:13
  from
• 37:14
  now
• 37:14
  on,
• 37:14
  basically
• 37:15
  covered
• 37:15
  him
• 37:15
  out
• 37:16
  because
• 37:16
  no
• 37:17
  Eddie
• 37:17
  Bikin
• 37:18
  tried
• 37:18
  every
• 37:19
  pistol.
• 37:19
  The
• 37:20
  conversation
• 37:20
  between
• 37:21
  the
• 37:21
  pistol
• 37:22
  anti
• 37:22
  testing.
• 37:23
  There
• 37:23
  you
• 37:24
  go,
• 37:24
  folks.
• 37:24
  So
• 37:24
  it's
• 37:25
  Curtis
• 37:25
  Pride
• 37:26
  who
• 37:26
  is
• 37:27
  responsible
• 37:28
  for
• 37:28
  that
• 37:28
  habit,
• 37:29
  you
• 37:29
  see
• 37:29
  of
• 37:29
  meetings
• 37:30
  on
• 37:30
  the
• 37:30
  mound
• 37:30
  all,
• 37:31
  all
• 37:31
  over
• 37:31
  the
• 37:31
  baseball
• 37:32
  field
• 37:32
  of
• 37:33
  covering
• 37:33
  the
• 37:33
  mouth.
• 37:34
  Because
• 37:34
  you
• 37:34
  never
• 37:35
  know
• 37:35
  if
• 37:35
  there's
• 37:35
  a
• 37:35
  lip
• 37:35
  reader
• 37:36
  out
• 37:36
  there.
• 37:36
  And
• 37:36
  there
• 37:37
  was
• 37:37
  Curtis
• 37:38
  Pride.
• 37:38
  So
• 37:38
  there
• 37:39
  you
• 37:39
  go
• 37:39
  with
• 37:40
  an
• 37:40
  instance
• 37:41
  right
• 37:41
  there,
• 37:41
  folks.
• 37:42
  Now
• 37:43
  on
• 37:43
  the.
• 37:43
  On
• 37:44
  the
• 37:44
  next
• 37:44
  point.
• 37:47
  You
• 37:48
  became
• 37:48
  a
• 37:48
  free
• 37:48
  agent
• 37:49
  before
• 37:49
  the
• 37:49
  96
• 37:50
  season.
• 37:51
  You
• 37:51
  signed
• 37:51
  with
• 37:51
  the
• 37:51
  Tigers
• 37:52
  and
• 37:53
  you
• 37:53
  really
• 37:53
  had
• 37:54
  a
• 37:54
  great
• 37:54
  year
• 37:54
  in
• 37:55
  Detroit.
• 38:01
  Yes,
• 38:02
  I
• 38:02
  did.
• 38:03
  It
• 38:03
  was
• 38:03
  my
• 38:03
  best
• 38:04
  season.
• 38:07
  I
• 38:08
  started
• 38:08
  off
• 38:08
  slow
• 38:08
  because
• 38:09
  I
• 38:09
  got
• 38:09
  hurt
• 38:10
  and
• 38:11
  bad.
• 38:13
  I
• 38:13
  started
• 38:13
  with
• 38:14
  the
• 38:14
  pitch
• 38:14
  hitter,
• 38:15
  but
• 38:15
  that
• 38:16
  started
• 38:16
  producing
• 38:17
  and
• 38:17
  started
• 38:17
  hitting
• 38:18
  and
• 38:18
  it
• 38:18
  sort
• 38:18
  of
• 38:18
  kept
• 38:18
  giving
• 38:19
  me
• 38:19
  more
• 38:19
  opportunity
• 38:19
  to
• 38:20
  play.
• 38:20
  And
• 38:20
  then
• 38:21
  I
• 38:21
  ended
• 38:21
  up
• 38:21
  playing
• 38:22
  almost
• 38:22
  every
• 38:22
  day
• 38:23
  with
• 38:23
  the
• 38:23
  rest
• 38:24
  of
• 38:24
  the
• 38:24
  season.
• 38:24
  Had
• 38:25
  my
• 38:25
  best
• 38:25
  season,
• 38:26
  batting.300.
• 38:29
  Nice.
• 38:29
  Yeah,
• 38:30
  nice
• 38:30
  year.
• 38:31
  We
• 38:31
  are
• 38:31
  speaking
• 38:31
  with
• 38:32
  Curtis
• 38:32
  Pride
• 38:33
  tonight
• 38:33
  about
• 38:34
  his
• 38:34
  great
• 38:35
  new
• 38:35
  book.
• 38:36
  I
• 38:36
  felt
• 38:36
  the
• 38:36
  Cheers
• 38:38
  a
• 38:38
  great
• 38:38
  read,
• 38:39
  folks.
• 38:39
  You
• 38:39
  should
• 38:40
  pick
• 38:40
  it
• 38:40
  up
• 38:40
  Amazon,
• 38:41
  Barnes
• 38:41
  and
• 38:42
  Noble.
• 38:43
  Now,
• 38:44
  people
• 38:45
  may
• 38:45
  not
• 38:46
  realize
• 38:46
  that
• 38:46
  we're
• 38:47
  talking
• 38:47
  about
• 38:47
  your
• 38:47
  career,
• 38:48
  Curtis.
• 38:49
  You
• 38:50
  had
• 38:50
  much
• 38:50
  more
• 38:51
  than
• 38:51
  what
• 38:51
  people
• 38:51
  call
• 38:52
  a
• 38:52
  cup
• 38:52
  of
• 38:52
  coffee.
• 38:53
  You
• 38:53
  had
• 38:54
  a
• 38:54
  fairly
• 38:54
  full
• 38:54
  career.
• 38:57
  Yes,
• 38:58
  I
• 38:58
  did
• 39:01
  23
• 39:02
  years
• 39:02
  in
• 39:03
  full
• 39:03
  base
• 39:03
  form,
• 39:04
  11
• 39:05
  years
• 39:05
  in
• 39:05
  next
• 39:06
  week.
• 39:07
  But
• 39:08
  my
• 39:08
  book
• 39:08
  is
• 39:09
  more
• 39:09
  down
• 39:10
  my
• 39:10
  life,
• 39:11
  you
• 39:11
  know,
• 39:12
  what
• 39:12
  I
• 39:12
  went
• 39:12
  through,
• 39:13
  the
• 39:13
  struggle,
• 39:14
  you
• 39:14
  know,
• 39:15
  learning
• 39:15
  how
• 39:16
  to
• 39:16
  talk,
• 39:17
  you
• 39:17
  know,
• 39:17
  growing
• 39:17
  up,
• 39:18
  dealing
• 39:18
  with
• 39:18
  different
• 39:19
  things,
• 39:19
  you
• 39:19
  know,
• 39:19
  kids
• 39:20
  making
• 39:20
  fun
• 39:20
  of
• 39:20
  me,
• 39:21
  you
• 39:21
  know,
• 39:21
  people
• 39:22
  telling
• 39:22
  me
• 39:23
  no,
• 39:23
  not
• 39:23
  believing
• 39:24
  me,
• 39:24
  document
• 39:25
  miseries.
• 39:27
  And
• 39:28
  so
• 39:29
  it's
• 39:29
  a
• 39:29
  great
• 39:30
  inspirational
• 39:31
  book
• 39:31
  that
• 39:31
  I
• 39:31
  hope
• 39:32
  to
• 39:32
  inspire
• 39:32
  many,
• 39:33
  many
• 39:33
  readers.
• 39:35
  There
• 39:36
  you
• 39:36
  go,
• 39:36
  folks.
• 39:37
  A
• 39:37
  terrific
• 39:38
  example
• 39:38
  and
• 39:39
  a
• 39:39
  terrific
• 39:39
  statement
• 39:40
  from
• 39:40
  Curtis
• 39:41
  about
• 39:42
  the
• 39:42
  book,
• 39:42
  not
• 39:43
  just
• 39:43
  baseball.
• 39:44
  It's
• 39:44
  about
• 39:44
  life.
• 39:45
  And
• 39:46
  that's
• 39:46
  the
• 39:46
  important
• 39:47
  thing
• 39:47
  to
• 39:47
  keep
• 39:48
  in
• 39:48
  mind.
• 39:49
  Now,
• 39:50
  as
• 39:50
  I
• 39:50
  said,
• 39:51
  Curtis
• 39:51
  is
• 39:51
  with
• 39:51
  us
• 39:52
  tonight
• 39:52
  on
• 39:52
  the
• 39:53
  program.
• 39:54
  You
• 39:54
  played
• 39:55
  for
• 39:55
  some
• 39:55
  great
• 39:56
  managers
• 39:57
  in
• 39:57
  the
• 39:57
  major
• 39:57
  leagues.
• 39:59
  Curtis,
• 39:59
  you
• 39:59
  played
• 40:00
  for
• 40:00
  Felipe
• 40:00
  Alou
• 40:01
  in
• 40:01
  Montreal,
• 40:03
  hall
• 40:03
  of
• 40:03
  Famer
• 40:04
  Bobby
• 40:04
  Cox
• 40:05
  in
• 40:06
  Atlanta,
• 40:07
  Mike
• 40:07
  Scioscha
• 40:08
  out
• 40:08
  in
• 40:08
  Los
• 40:09
  Angeles,
• 40:10
  and
• 40:10
  of
• 40:10
  course
• 40:10
  Joe
• 40:11
  Torrey
• 40:11
  with
• 40:11
  the
• 40:11
  Yankees.
• 40:12
  Talk
• 40:13
  a
• 40:13
  little
• 40:13
  bit
• 40:13
  about
• 40:13
  these
• 40:14
  managers
• 40:14
  and
• 40:15
  their
• 40:15
  different
• 40:15
  style
• 40:16
  of
• 40:16
  managing.
• 40:19
  Yeah,
• 40:19
  I've
• 40:20
  been
• 40:22
  fortunate
• 40:23
  to
• 40:23
  have
• 40:23
  the
• 40:23
  opportunity
• 40:24
  to
• 40:24
  play
• 40:25
  for
• 40:26
  hall
• 40:26
  of
• 40:26
  Fame
• 40:26
  managers.
• 40:27
  And
• 40:28
  then
• 40:29
  each
• 40:29
  one
• 40:30
  of
• 40:30
  them,
• 40:30
  I
• 40:30
  noticed
• 40:30
  that
• 40:31
  each
• 40:31
  one
• 40:31
  had
• 40:31
  their
• 40:32
  own
• 40:32
  different
• 40:32
  amounts
• 40:32
  of
• 40:33
  these.
• 40:34
  And
• 40:34
  like
• 40:35
  Philippe
• 40:35
  Hagalu,
• 40:36
  it
• 40:36
  was
• 40:36
  more
• 40:36
  of
• 40:37
  small
• 40:38
  ball
• 40:38
  game.
• 40:38
  Small
• 40:39
  ball,
• 40:40
  hit
• 40:40
  it
• 40:40
  run,
• 40:41
  New
• 40:41
  Zealand.
• 40:43
  And
• 40:43
  Bobby
• 40:44
  Cox
• 40:44
  is
• 40:46
  just
• 40:46
  a
• 40:46
  great

• 40:49
  method
• 40:50
  play
• 40:51
  the
• 40:51
  game
• 40:51
  and
• 40:54
  was
• 40:54
  so
• 40:54
  Troy
• 40:55
  his
• 40:55
  very
• 40:56
  laid
• 40:56
  back.
• 40:57
  And
• 40:57
  of
• 40:57
  course
• 40:58
  we
• 40:58
  have
• 40:58
  a
• 40:58
  lot
• 40:58
  of
• 40:58
  talent
• 40:59
  on
• 40:59
  the
• 40:59
  team,
• 40:59
  so
• 41:00
  he
• 41:00
  trusts
• 41:01
  the
• 41:01
  players,
• 41:01
  he
• 41:02
  played
• 41:02
  the
• 41:02
  game
• 41:02
  the
• 41:02
  right
• 41:03
  way.
• 41:03
  And
• 41:04
  Mike
• 41:04
  Zosin,
• 41:05
  he
• 41:06
  is
• 41:06
  a
• 41:06
  very
• 41:06
  aggressive
• 41:07
  manager.
• 41:08
  He
• 41:08
  likes
• 41:09
  to
• 41:09
  go
• 41:09
  from
• 41:09
  first
• 41:09
  to
• 41:10
  third
• 41:10
  base,
• 41:11
  buddy.
• 41:11
  He
• 41:12
  doesn't
• 41:12
  believe
• 41:12
  it,
• 41:13
  never
• 41:13
  makes
• 41:14
  it
• 41:14
  first
• 41:14
  or
• 41:14
  third
• 41:15
  out
• 41:15
  at
• 41:16
  thorn
• 41:16
  base.
• 41:17
  And
• 41:18
  they
• 41:18
  like
• 41:19
  to
• 41:19
  see
• 41:19
  all
• 41:19
  the
• 41:20
  math.
• 41:20
  So
• 41:21
  I
• 41:21
  kind
• 41:22
  of
• 41:23
  try
• 41:23
  to
• 41:23
  incorporate
• 41:24
  different
• 41:24
  meth
• 41:27
  and
• 41:30
  one
• 41:31
  philosophy.
• 41:32
  And
• 41:32
  that's
• 41:33
  how
• 41:33
  I
• 41:33
  was
• 41:33
  able
• 41:33
  to
• 41:34
  coach
• 41:35
  my
• 41:35
  college
• 41:36
  team
• 41:36
  at
• 41:36
  Gallaudet
• 41:37
  University
• 41:38
  and
• 41:38
  never
• 41:39
  had
• 41:39
  a
• 41:39
  lot
• 41:39
  of
• 41:40
  success.
• 41:41
  Did
• 41:42
  any
• 41:42
  of
• 41:42
  your
• 41:43
  managers
• 41:44
  or
• 41:44
  teammates,
• 41:45
  Curtis,
• 41:46
  try
• 41:46
  to
• 41:47
  learn
• 41:47
  als,
• 41:49
  sorry,
• 41:50

• 41:52
  you
• 41:52
  were
• 41:53
  with
• 41:53
  them?
• 41:53
  Any
• 41:53
  guys
• 41:54
  make
• 41:54
  the
• 41:54
  effort
• 41:54
  to
• 41:55
  at
• 41:55
  least
• 41:55
  learn?
• 41:59
  Well,
• 42:00
  to
• 42:00
  be
• 42:00
  honest
• 42:01
  with
• 42:01
  you,
• 42:01
  I
• 42:01
  never
• 42:02
  learned
• 42:02
  asl.
• 42:03
  So
• 42:03
  I
• 42:04
  became
• 42:05
  the
• 42:05
  head
• 42:05
  baseball
• 42:05
  coach
• 42:06
  at

• 42:10
  and
• 42:11
  it
• 42:12
  was
• 42:12
  a
• 42:13
  great
• 42:13
  experience
• 42:14
  and
• 42:15
  it's
• 42:15
  good
• 42:15
  to
• 42:15
  have
• 42:15
  a
• 42:16
  second
• 42:16
  language
• 42:17
  and
• 42:17
  be
• 42:17
  able
• 42:17
  to
• 42:18
  communicate
• 42:18
  with
• 42:18
  war
• 42:19
  more
• 42:20
  people
• 42:20
  like
• 42:20
  death
• 42:22
  and
• 42:22
  sign.
• 42:24
  Right.
• 42:26
  Now,
• 42:26
  let's
• 42:26
  talk
• 42:27
  about
• 42:27
  your
• 42:27
  time
• 42:27
  out
• 42:28
  here
• 42:29
  or
• 42:29
  up
• 42:30
  here
• 42:30
  in
• 42:30
  the
• 42:30
  Atlantic
• 42:31
  League.
• 42:31
  You
• 42:32
  played
• 42:32
  with
• 42:32
  the
• 42:32
  Nashua
• 42:33
  Pride,
• 42:33
  Butch
• 42:34
  Hobson's

• 42:35
  and
• 42:36
  Southern
• 42:36
  Maryland
• 42:37
  Blue
• 42:38
  Crabs.
• 42:38
  Excuse
• 42:39
  me.
• 42:40
  You
• 42:40
  were
• 42:40
  the
• 42:41
  only
• 42:41
  player
• 42:41
  from
• 42:42
  the
• 42:42
  Atlantic
• 42:42
  League,
• 42:43
  though,
• 42:43
  Curtis,
• 42:44
  to
• 42:44
  make
• 42:44
  it
• 42:44
  back
• 42:45
  to
• 42:45
  the
• 42:45
  big
• 42:45
  leagues
• 42:46
  twice
• 42:46
  after
• 42:46
  playing
• 42:47
  in
• 42:47
  the
• 42:47
  Atlantic
• 42:48
  League.
• 42:51
  Yes,
• 42:52
  yes.
• 42:52
  I
• 42:52
  mean,
• 42:53
  it
• 42:53
  was
• 42:54
  a
• 42:54
  bit
• 42:54
  lucky.
• 42:55
  I
• 42:55
  mean,
• 42:56
  it
• 42:56
  was
• 42:56
  not
• 42:57
  easy.
• 42:57
  But
• 42:58
  you
• 42:58
  know,
• 42:58
  I
• 42:58
  believe
• 42:59
  in
• 42:59
  my
• 42:59
  ability.
• 43:00
  I
• 43:00
  believe
• 43:00
  I
• 43:00
  still
• 43:00
  have
• 43:01
  what
• 43:01
  it
• 43:01
  takes
• 43:02
  to
• 43:02
  get
• 43:02
  back
• 43:02
  into
• 43:03
  big
• 43:03
  league.
• 43:03
  All
• 43:04
  I
• 43:04
  had
• 43:04
  to
• 43:04
  do
• 43:04
  is
• 43:05
  know
• 43:05
  just
• 43:05
  recording,
• 43:06
  put
• 43:07
  up
• 43:07
  the
• 43:07
  numbers.
• 43:08
  It
• 43:08
  shows
• 43:09
  that
• 43:09
  I
• 43:09
  can
• 43:09
  still
• 43:09
  play.
• 43:10
  And
• 43:10
  fortunately
• 43:11
  a
• 43:12
  couple
• 43:12
  teams
• 43:13
  saw
• 43:13
  my
• 43:13
  numbers
• 43:14
  and
• 43:15
  took
• 43:15
  a
• 43:15
  chance
• 43:16
  to
• 43:16
  find
• 43:16
  me
• 43:17
  and.
• 43:18
  And
• 43:19
  I
• 43:19
  was
• 43:19
  able
• 43:19
  to
• 43:19
  make
• 43:19
  it.
• 43:20
  That
• 43:20
  makes
• 43:20
  the
• 43:20
  leaks.
• 43:22
  So
• 43:23
  it's
• 43:23
  just
• 43:24
  a
• 43:24
  matter
• 43:24
  of
• 43:24
  perseverance,
• 43:26
  not
• 43:26
  giving
• 43:27
  up.
• 43:27
  You
• 43:27
  know,
• 43:28
  believe
• 43:28
  in
• 43:29
  yourself
• 43:29
  that
• 43:30
  anything
• 43:30
  can
• 43:31
  happen.
• 43:32
  Now,
• 43:33
  Curtis,
• 43:33
  you
• 43:33
  had
• 43:34
  a
• 43:34
  great
• 43:34
  highlight,
• 43:35
  a
• 43:35
  career
• 43:35
  highlight
• 43:36
  with
• 43:36
  the
• 43:36
  New
• 43:37
  York
• 43:37
  Yankees
• 43:37
  that
• 43:38
  a
• 43:38
  lot
• 43:38
  of
• 43:38
  Yankee
• 43:39
  fans
• 43:39
  out
• 43:40
  there
• 43:40
  do
• 43:40
  remember.
• 43:41
  Tell
• 43:41
  us
• 43:41
  about
• 43:41
  that
• 43:42
  particular
• 43:42
  highlight
• 43:43
  of
• 43:43
  your
• 43:43
  career.
• 43:45
  Yes,
• 43:45
  yes,
• 43:46
  I
• 43:46
  remember.
• 43:46
  It
• 43:46
  was
• 43:47
  my
• 43:47
  first
• 43:47
  hit.
• 43:48
  My
• 43:48
  hit
• 43:48
  the
• 43:48
  whole
• 43:49
  run
• 43:49
  against
• 43:50
  Boston
• 43:50
  Red
• 43:51
  Sox
• 43:51
  and
• 43:52
  it
• 43:52
  was
• 43:52
  just
• 43:52
  a
• 43:53
  great
• 43:53
  experience.
• 43:55
  They
• 43:55
  had
• 43:55
  a
• 43:55
  sanity
• 43:56
  ovation
• 43:57
  and
• 43:58
  now
• 43:59
  just
• 43:59
  be
• 43:59
  a
• 43:59
  jakey
• 44:00
  stand
• 44:00
  wearing
• 44:01
  pinstripe
• 44:01
  uniforms
• 44:03
  and
• 44:03
  to
• 44:03
  be
• 44:03
  able
• 44:04
  to
• 44:04
  get
• 44:05
  a
• 44:05
  home
• 44:05
  run
• 44:05
  and
• 44:05
  get
• 44:06
  the
• 44:06
  old
• 44:06
  rifles
• 44:08
  off
• 44:08
  the
• 44:08
  bed
• 44:09
  socks.
• 44:12
  Wonderful
• 44:12
  experience.
• 44:14
  Oh,
• 44:15
  must
• 44:15
  have
• 44:15
  been
• 44:16
  amazing.
• 44:16
  Curtis.
• 44:17
  Yes.
• 44:17
  I
• 44:18
  want
• 44:18
  to
• 44:18
  ask
• 44:18
  you
• 44:19
  about
• 44:19
  a
• 44:20
  topic
• 44:20
  that
• 44:20
  I'm
• 44:22
  very
• 44:23
  familiar
• 44:23
  with.
• 44:24
  I
• 44:24
  know
• 44:24
  there's
• 44:24
  some
• 44:25
  people
• 44:25
  who
• 44:25
  want
• 44:26
  to
• 44:26
  get
• 44:26
  this
• 44:26
  gentleman
• 44:27
  into
• 44:27
  the
• 44:27
  Baseball
• 44:28
  hall
• 44:28
  of
• 44:28
  Fame
• 44:29
  and
• 44:29
  that's
• 44:29
  Dummy
• 44:30
  Hoy.
• 44:31
  And
• 44:31
  I
• 44:32
  know
• 44:32
  you
• 44:32
  know
• 44:33
  the
• 44:33
  story
• 44:33
  of
• 44:34
  dummy.
• 44:34
  Talk
• 44:35
  a
• 44:35
  little
• 44:35
  bit
• 44:36
  about
• 44:37
  dummy
• 44:37
  to
• 44:37
  the
• 44:38
  folks.
• 44:40
  Yeah,
• 44:40
  Dummy
• 44:41
  Hoy,
• 44:41
  he
• 44:41
  was
• 44:42
  the
• 44:42
  first
• 44:42
  deaf
• 44:42
  planner
• 44:43
  to
• 44:43
  play
• 44:43
  at
• 44:43
  the
• 44:43
  Middle
• 44:44
  east
• 44:44
  back
• 44:44
  in
• 44:45
  the
• 44:45
  late
• 44:45
  1800s
• 44:47
  and
• 44:48
  he
• 44:48
  was
• 44:48
  a
• 44:48
  great
• 44:49
  outfielder
• 44:50
  and
• 44:52
  he
• 44:52
  signed
• 44:53
  though
• 44:53
  he
• 44:53
  actually
• 44:54
  he
• 44:54
  was
• 44:54
  the
• 44:55
  first
• 44:56
  player
• 44:56
  to.
• 44:59
  That's
• 44:59
  how
• 45:00
  they
• 45:00
  started
• 45:00
  with
• 45:00
  the
• 45:01
  unpolished
• 45:01
  balls.
• 45:02
  Balls
• 45:03
  of
• 45:03
  drinks
• 45:03
  called
• 45:04
  was
• 45:04
  started
• 45:04
  because
• 45:05
  of
• 45:05
  Demi
• 45:06
  Hoy
• 45:07
  and
• 45:08
  he
• 45:08
  had
• 45:09
  great
• 45:09
  numbers
• 45:10
  and
• 45:10
  I
• 45:10
  feel
• 45:10
  that
• 45:11
  should
• 45:11
  be
• 45:11
  the
• 45:11
  hall
• 45:11
  of
• 45:12
  Fame
• 45:12
  one
• 45:12
  day.
• 45:13
  That
• 45:14
  would
• 45:14
  be
• 45:14
  tremendous
• 45:15
  to
• 45:15
  have
• 45:17
  a
• 45:17
  def
• 45:17
  ball
• 45:18

• 45:18
  in
• 45:18
  the
• 45:18
  hall
• 45:18
  of
• 45:18
  Fame.
• 45:19
  I
• 45:19
  think
• 45:19
  that
• 45:19
  would
• 45:19
  speak
• 45:20
  volumes
• 45:20
  for
• 45:20
  the
• 45:21
  hall
• 45:22
  and
• 45:22
  really
• 45:22
  do
• 45:23
  a
• 45:23
  lot
• 45:23
  for
• 45:23
  them.
• 45:23
  Now,
• 45:24
  Curtis
• 45:25
  Pride
• 45:25
  with
• 45:25
  us

  mentioned,
• 45:30
  Curtis,
• 45:31
  Gallaudet
• 45:32
  University,
• 45:34
  which
• 45:35
  of
• 45:35
  course
• 45:35
  is
• 45:35
  a
• 45:35
  university
• 45:37
  for
• 45:38
  people
• 45:38
  without
• 45:38
  speech
• 45:39
  and
• 45:39
  without
• 45:40
  hearing.
• 45:41
  Tell
• 45:41
  us
• 45:42
  about
• 45:42
  your
• 45:43
  time
• 45:43
  as
• 45:43
  a
• 45:44
  manager
• 45:45
  at
• 45:45
  Gallaudet.
• 45:47
  Yes,
• 45:50
  I
• 45:51
  coached
• 45:51
  Gallaudet
• 45:53
  for
• 45:53
  about
• 45:53
  16
• 45:54
  years
• 45:55
  and
• 45:56
  yeah,
• 45:56
  I
• 45:56
  remember
• 45:57
  right.
• 45:58
  My
• 45:58
  first
• 45:59
  year
• 46:00
  we
• 46:00
  didn't
• 46:00
  have
• 46:01
  a
• 46:01
  good
• 46:01
  team
• 46:02
  and
• 46:02
  so
• 46:03
  I
• 46:03
  had
• 46:03
  to
• 46:03
  change
• 46:04
  the
• 46:04
  whole
• 46:04
  culture,
• 46:05
  the
• 46:06
  whole
• 46:06
  baseball
• 46:07
  program.
• 46:08
  And
• 46:09
  I
• 46:10
  remember
• 46:10
  the
• 46:10
  team
• 46:11
  we
• 46:11
  played
• 46:11
  against
• 46:11
  other
• 46:12
  college,
• 46:12
  they
• 46:13
  would
• 46:13
  beat
• 46:13
  us
• 46:14
  bad
• 46:14
  221
• 46:16
  or
• 46:17
  32.
• 46:17
  Not
• 46:18
  easy.
• 46:18
  And
• 46:19
  so
• 46:20
  I
• 46:20
  had
• 46:20
  to
• 46:20
  change
• 46:21
  the
• 46:21
  whole
• 46:21
  program.
• 46:22
  And
• 46:22
  if
• 46:23
  he
• 46:23
  got
• 46:23
  better
• 46:23
  every
• 46:24
  year
• 46:24
  by
• 46:25
  my
• 46:25
  fifth
• 46:26
  year
• 46:26
  we
• 46:26
  had
• 46:27
  our
• 46:27
  best
• 46:27
  season
• 46:28
  ever.
• 46:28
  We
• 46:28
  won
• 46:28
  27
• 46:29
  game
• 46:30
  and
• 46:30
  we
• 46:30
  beat
• 46:31
  by
• 46:32
  our
• 46:32
  top
• 46:32
  20
• 46:33
  teams
• 46:33
  in
• 46:33
  the
• 46:34
  country.
• 46:35
  Amazing.
• 46:36
  Yeah.
• 46:36
  Now
• 46:37
  you
• 46:37
  were
• 46:37
  playing
• 46:38
  hearing
• 46:38
  teams,
• 46:39
  right?
• 46:41
  Yes,
• 46:41
  we
• 46:41
  play
• 46:42
  all
• 46:42
  hearing
• 46:42
  team.
• 46:42
  We
• 46:43
  were
• 46:43
  the
• 46:43
  only
• 46:43
  team
• 46:44
  with
• 46:44
  hearing
• 46:45
  disabilities.
• 46:46
  That
• 46:47
  is
• 46:47
  great.
• 46:48
  And
• 46:48
  why
• 46:49
  did
• 46:49
  they
• 46:49
  cancel
• 46:49
  the
• 46:50
  program,
• 46:51
  Curtis?
• 46:52
  I
• 46:53
  had
• 46:53
  no
• 46:53
  idea.
• 46:54
  Oh
• 46:54
  boy,
• 46:55
  no
• 46:55
  idea.
• 46:55
  I
• 46:55
  wish
• 46:55
  I
• 46:56
  knew.
• 46:56
  But
• 46:56
  they
• 46:57
  never
• 46:57
  told
• 46:57
  me
• 46:59
  that.
• 46:59
  That,
• 46:59
  that's
• 47:00
  a
• 47:00
  real
• 47:00
  shame.
• 47:00
  Now
• 47:01
  I
• 47:02
  was
• 47:02
  kind
• 47:02
  of
• 47:02
  disappointed
• 47:03
  but
• 47:03
  it
• 47:04
  Is
• 47:04
  what
• 47:04
  is.
• 47:06
  You're
• 47:06
  right,
• 47:06
  Curtis.
• 47:07
  Now
• 47:08
  your
• 47:09
  wife
• 47:09
  Lisa,
• 47:10
  your
• 47:10
  lovely
• 47:10
  wife
• 47:11
  Lisa,
• 47:11
  together
• 47:12
  with
• 47:12
  her,
• 47:13
  you
• 47:14
  run
• 47:14
  the
• 47:14
  Pride
• 47:14
  Foundation.
• 47:15
  Together
• 47:16
  with
• 47:16
  Pride
• 47:17
  Foundation.
• 47:18
  Tell
• 47:18
  us
• 47:18
  a
• 47:18
  little
• 47:18
  bit
• 47:19
  about
• 47:19
  your
• 47:19
  foundation.
• 47:24
  Next.
• 47:25
  We
• 47:26
  started
• 47:26
  the
• 47:26
  6005
• 47:27
  foundation
• 47:28
  back
• 47:28
  in
• 47:29
  2002
• 47:30
  with
• 47:30
  the
• 47:31
  goal
• 47:31
  of
• 47:31
  hoping
• 47:33
  kids
• 47:33
  with
• 47:33
  hearing
• 47:34
  disabilities
• 47:35
  and
• 47:35
  also
• 47:35
  kiss
• 47:37
  hearing
• 47:37
  kids
• 47:38
  who
• 47:38
  want
• 47:38
  to
• 47:38
  become
• 47:41
  the
• 47:42
  speech
• 47:42
  pathology
• 47:43
  audiology
• 47:45
  or
• 47:45
  the
• 47:46
  teacher
• 47:46
  for
• 47:46
  the
• 47:47
  deaf
• 47:47
  that
• 47:48
  we
• 47:48
  provide
• 47:48
  scholarship
• 47:49
  for
• 47:49
  kids
• 47:50
  go
• 47:50
  to
• 47:50
  college
• 47:51
  and
• 47:51
  take
• 47:51
  deaf
• 47:52
  related
• 47:52
  classes
• 47:53
  program.
• 47:54
  And
• 47:55
  we
• 47:55
  also
• 47:55
  provide
• 47:56
  monies
• 47:57
  to
• 47:58
  baby
• 47:59
  kids
• 47:59
  who
• 47:59
  could
• 47:59
  afford
• 48:00
  funeral
• 48:00
  years.
• 48:02
  And
• 48:03
  we
• 48:04
  ran
• 48:04
  that
• 48:04
  program.
• 48:05
  We
• 48:05
  ran
• 48:05
  that
• 48:06
  Delta
• 48:06
  for
• 48:07
  about
• 48:09
  10
• 48:09
  to
• 48:10
  12
• 48:10
  years
• 48:11
  and
• 48:11
  unfortunately
• 48:12
  we
• 48:12
  stopped
• 48:14
  running
• 48:14
  the
• 48:15
  program
• 48:15
  because,
• 48:16
  you
• 48:16
  know,
• 48:16
  I
• 48:16
  took
• 48:17
  a
• 48:17
  full
• 48:17
  time
• 48:17
  job
• 48:18
  at
• 48:18
  Gallatin
• 48:19
  and
• 48:20
  I
• 48:20
  have
• 48:20
  two
• 48:21
  kids
• 48:21
  who
• 48:22
  have
• 48:22
  hearing
• 48:22
  disabilities.
• 48:23
  And
• 48:23
  so
• 48:24
  we
• 48:24
  take
• 48:24
  a
• 48:24
  lot
• 48:24
  of
• 48:25
  our
• 48:25
  time
• 48:25
  away
• 48:26
  from
• 48:26
  the
• 48:26
  garden
• 48:27
  still
• 48:27
  because
• 48:28
  put
• 48:28
  on
• 48:28
  gardens
• 48:29
  on
• 48:29
  hold.
• 48:30
  I
• 48:31
  see.
• 48:31
  Yeah.
• 48:32
  With
• 48:33
  very
• 48:33
  good
• 48:33
  reasons
• 48:34
  though,
• 48:34
  that's
• 48:35
  for
• 48:35
  sure.
• 48:35
  Curtis,
• 48:36
  now,
• 48:40
  the
• 48:40
  story
• 48:41
  of
• 48:41
  your
• 48:41
  major
• 48:42
  league
• 48:42
  career.
• 48:42
  Have
• 48:42
  you
• 48:43
  ever
• 48:43
  thought
• 48:43
  of
• 48:43
  making
• 48:44
  it
• 48:44
  into
• 48:44
  a
• 48:44
  movie,
• 48:45
  Curtis?
• 48:49
  Well,
• 48:50
  that'd
• 48:51
  be
• 48:51
  nice
• 48:51
  though.
• 48:59
  Yeah.
• 49:00
  Who
• 49:00
  would
• 49:00
  you
• 49:00
  like
• 49:00
  to
• 49:01
  play
• 49:01
  you?
• 49:01
  What
• 49:01
  actor
• 49:02
  do
• 49:02
  you
• 49:02
  want
• 49:02
  to
• 49:02
  play
• 49:03
  you?
• 49:06
  I
• 49:06
  don't
• 49:06
  know.
• 49:06
  I
• 49:07
  have
• 49:07
  really
• 49:07
  thought
• 49:07
  of
• 49:08
  Gabby.
• 49:09
  Well,
• 49:10
  that's
• 49:10
  something
• 49:10
  to
• 49:10
  think
• 49:11
  about
• 49:11
  now.
• 49:12
  So
• 49:12
  there
• 49:12
  you
• 49:12
  go.
• 49:14
  I
• 49:14
  might
• 49:14
  have
• 49:14
  a
• 49:15
  great
• 49:15
  idea
• 49:15
  there
• 49:17
  again,
• 49:18
  folks,
• 49:18
  Curtis
• 49:18
  Pride
• 49:19
  is
• 49:19
  with
• 49:19
  us.
• 49:20
  Let's
• 49:21
  check
• 49:21
  the
• 49:21
  name
• 49:22
  of
• 49:22
  the
• 49:22
  book
• 49:22
  again.
• 49:22
  I
• 49:22
  got
• 49:23
  to
• 49:23
  get
• 49:23
  back
• 49:23
  to
• 49:23
  my
• 49:23
  notes,
• 49:24
  folks.
• 49:24
  I'm
• 49:24
  sorry.
• 49:26
  The
• 49:27
  book
• 49:27
  is
• 49:27
  called
• 49:27
  I
• 49:28
  Felt
• 49:28
  the
• 49:29
  the
• 49:29
  Remarkable
• 49:30
  Silent
• 49:30
  Life,
• 49:31
  Curtis
• 49:32
  Pride.
• 49:33
  Now
• 49:33
  tell
• 49:33
  the
• 49:33
  folks
• 49:34
  what
• 49:34
  you
• 49:34
  mean,
• 49:35
  Curtis,
• 49:35
  by
• 49:35
  I
• 49:36
  felt
• 49:36
  the
• 49:36
  cheers.
• 49:42
  Well,
• 49:43
  we
• 49:43
  were
• 49:44
  thinking,
• 49:44
  we
• 49:44
  were
• 49:44
  thinking
• 49:45
  of
• 49:45
  a
• 49:46
  good
• 49:46
  title
• 49:47
  for
• 49:47
  my
• 49:47
  book
• 49:48
  and
• 49:48
  my
• 49:48
  ears
• 49:49
  since
• 49:49
  came
• 49:49
  up
• 49:50
  with
• 49:50
  the
• 49:51
  title.
• 49:51
  I
• 49:51
  don't
• 49:52
  hear
• 49:52
  it
• 49:52
  because
• 49:53
  I
• 49:53
  did
• 49:54
  reveal
• 49:55
  that
• 49:57
  I
• 49:57
  got
• 49:57
  my
• 49:58
  voice
• 49:58
  nicely
• 49:58
  hit.
• 49:59
  Now
• 49:59
  I
• 49:59
  was
• 50:00
  standing
• 50:00
  on
• 50:00
  Executive
• 50:01
  Edge
• 50:01
  and
• 50:01
  I
• 50:01
  got
• 50:01
  that
• 50:02
  busy
• 50:03
  Sandy
• 50:03
  ovation
• 50:05
  and
• 50:05
  it
• 50:05
  was
• 50:05
  so.
• 50:06
  Well,
• 50:06
  I
• 50:07
  mean,
• 50:07
  I
• 50:07
  actually
• 50:08
  fell
• 50:08
  into
• 50:08
  the
• 50:08
  chairs
• 50:09
  and
• 50:10
  we
• 50:10
  thought
• 50:11
  that'd
• 50:11
  be
• 50:12
  a
• 50:12
  perfect
• 50:12
  title
• 50:13
  for
• 50:13
  our
• 50:13
  book.
• 50:16
  And
• 50:16
  it
• 50:16
  worked.
• 50:17
  Definitely.
• 50:18
  You're
• 50:18
  definitely
• 50:18
  right,
• 50:19
  Curtis.
• 50:19
  Now
• 50:20
  we
• 50:20
  say
• 50:21
  that
• 50:21
  you
• 50:21
  are
• 50:21
  a
• 50:21
  role
• 50:22
  model.
• 50:22
  You're
• 50:22
  a
• 50:22
  role
• 50:23
  model
• 50:23
  for
• 50:24
  people
• 50:24
  with
• 50:24
  impediments
• 50:26
  for
• 50:26
  young
• 50:26
  kids
• 50:28
  growing
• 50:28
  up
• 50:29
  that
• 50:30
  may
• 50:30
  not
• 50:30
  be
• 50:30
  100%
• 50:31
  in
• 50:31
  their
• 50:31
  hearing.
• 50:32
  You
• 50:33
  are
• 50:33
  there
• 50:34
  to
• 50:35
  set
• 50:35
  the
• 50:35
  bar
• 50:36
  for
• 50:36
  them.
• 50:36
  Who
• 50:37
  was
• 50:37
  your
• 50:37
  role
• 50:38
  model,
• 50:38
  Curtis?
• 50:42
  Well,
• 50:42
  I
• 50:42
  would
• 50:43
  have
• 50:43
  to
• 50:43
  say
• 50:43
  my

  parents.
• 50:44
  My
• 50:44
  parents
• 50:44
  were
• 50:44
  my
• 50:44
  biggest
• 50:45
  role
• 50:45
  model
• 50:47
  because
• 50:47
  they
• 50:49
  raised
• 50:49
  me.
• 50:50
  They
• 50:51
  taught
• 50:51
  me
• 50:51
  to
• 50:52
  believe
• 50:52
  in
• 50:52
  myself,
• 50:52
  that
• 50:53
  anything
• 50:53
  is
• 50:53
  possible.
• 50:56
  They
• 50:56
  never
• 50:56
  treat
• 50:57
  me
• 50:57
  differently.
• 50:57
  They
• 50:58
  always
• 50:58
  felt
• 50:59
  that
• 50:59
  even
• 50:59
  though
• 51:00
  I
• 51:00
  have
• 51:00
  a
• 51:01
  hearing
• 51:01
  disability
• 51:01
  that
• 51:02
  I
• 51:02
  can
• 51:03
  be
• 51:03
  whatever
• 51:04
  I
• 51:04
  wanted
• 51:04
  to
• 51:04
  Be
• 51:06
  if
• 51:06
  I
• 51:06
  just
• 51:07
  work
• 51:07
  hard
• 51:08
  and
• 51:09
  believe
• 51:10
  in
• 51:10
  myself,
• 51:11
  anything
• 51:12
  is
• 51:12
  possible.
• 51:14
  Right?
• 51:15
  Good
• 51:15
  point.
• 51:15
  Good
• 51:16
  point,
• 51:16
  Curtis.
• 51:17
  Now,
• 51:17
  your
• 51:17
  time
• 51:18
  in
• 51:18
  Binghamton
• 51:18
  with
• 51:19
  the
• 51:19
  Mets.
• 51:20
  How
• 51:20
  was
• 51:21
  your
• 51:21
  time
• 51:21
  up
• 51:21
  in
• 51:21
  Binghamton?
• 51:28
  I
• 51:28
  had
• 51:28
  a
• 51:28
  great
• 51:29
  time
• 51:29
  in
• 51:29
  Binghamton
• 51:30
  and
• 51:30
  I
• 51:30
  enjoy
• 51:31
  my
• 51:31
  time.
• 51:32
  But
• 51:32
  there
• 51:32
  were
• 51:32
  times
• 51:33
  where,
• 51:34
  to
• 51:34
  be
• 51:34
  honest
• 51:35
  with
• 51:35
  you,
• 51:35
  there
• 51:35
  were
• 51:35
  times
• 51:36
  where
• 51:36
  I
• 51:37
  got
• 51:37
  quickly
• 51:38
  because
• 51:38
  I
• 51:39
  started
• 51:39
  off
• 51:39
  the
• 51:39
  season
• 51:40
  playing
• 51:40
  every
• 51:41
  day
• 51:41
  and
• 51:41
  I
• 51:41
  was
• 51:42
  doing
• 51:42
  well.
• 51:43
  And
• 51:44
  then
• 51:44
  for
• 51:44
  some
• 51:44
  reason,
• 51:45
  Joy,
• 51:46
  at
• 51:46
  some
• 51:47
  point
• 51:47
  during
• 51:47
  the
• 51:48
  season,
• 51:48
  I
• 51:48
  started
• 51:49
  to
• 51:50
  go
• 51:50
  downhill
• 51:52
  and,
• 51:53
  you
• 51:53
  know,
• 51:54
  I
• 51:54
  was
• 51:54
  drugged
• 51:54
  a
• 51:54
  little
• 51:55
  bit
• 51:55
  on
• 51:55
  the
• 51:55
  field
• 51:56
  and
• 51:57
  my
• 51:57
  girlfriend
• 51:58
  broke
• 51:58
  up
• 51:58
  with
• 51:58
  me
• 51:59
  and
• 51:59
  I
• 52:00
  called
• 52:00
  some
• 52:00
  of
• 52:00
  my
• 52:01
  teammates
• 52:01
  making
• 52:01
  fun
• 52:02
  of
• 52:02
  me.
• 52:02
  So
• 52:03
  I
• 52:03
  was
• 52:03
  going
• 52:03
  through
• 52:04
  bad
• 52:04
  time
• 52:05
  and
• 52:05
  I
• 52:05
  wanted
• 52:06
  to
• 52:06
  quit.
• 52:08
  So
• 52:08
  by
• 52:08
  my
• 52:09
  parents
• 52:09
  came
• 52:10
  up
• 52:10
  DP
• 52:11
  Hampton
• 52:12
  when
• 52:13
  I
• 52:13
  was
• 52:13
  about
• 52:13
  to
• 52:13
  walk
• 52:14
  away
• 52:14
  for
• 52:14
  basketball.
• 52:16
  So
• 52:16
  my
• 52:17
  father
• 52:17
  told
• 52:18
  me
• 52:18
  that
• 52:18
  he
• 52:19
  didn't
• 52:19
  raise
• 52:19
  his
• 52:20
  son
• 52:20
  to
• 52:20
  be
• 52:20
  a
• 52:20
  quitter.
• 52:22
  So
• 52:22
  he
• 52:22
  is
• 52:23
  honoring
• 52:24
  my
• 52:24
  commitment
• 52:25
  to
• 52:25
  better
• 52:25
  decision.
• 52:26
  And
• 52:27
  they
• 52:27
  waited.
• 52:28
  I
• 52:28
  said,
• 52:28
  it's
• 52:28
  easy
• 52:28
  making
• 52:29
  decisions
• 52:30
  if
• 52:30
  I
• 52:30
  wanted
• 52:30
  to
• 52:31
  continue
• 52:31
  playing
• 52:31
  for
• 52:32
  that
• 52:32
  moon
• 52:32
  baseball.
• 52:34
  And
• 52:34
  so
• 52:34
  of
• 52:35
  course
• 52:35
  I
• 52:36
  ordered
• 52:36
  my
• 52:36
  community
• 52:37
  felicitism
• 52:39
  and
• 52:39
  we
• 52:39
  ended
• 52:39
  up
• 52:40
  winning
• 52:40
  the
• 52:41
  championship.
• 52:42
  And
• 52:43
  that
• 52:43
  was
• 52:43
  fun.
• 52:44
  I
• 52:44
  just
• 52:44
  feel
• 52:44
  like
• 52:45
  I
• 52:45
  was
• 52:45
  part
• 52:45
  of
• 52:45
  the
• 52:45
  team
• 52:46
  because
• 52:46
  I
• 52:46
  want
• 52:47
  to
• 52:47
  play
• 52:47
  much.
• 52:49
  And
• 52:50
  after
• 52:50
  the
• 52:51
  season,
• 52:52
  I
• 52:52
  thought
• 52:53
  about
• 52:53
  it
• 52:53
  long
• 52:54
  and
• 52:54
  hard
• 52:55
  if
• 52:55
  I
• 52:56
  wanted
• 52:56
  to
• 52:56
  continue
• 52:57
  playing
• 52:57
  baseball
• 52:57
  again.
• 52:59
  And
• 53:00
  so
• 53:00
  I
• 53:00
  decided
• 53:01
  to
• 53:01
  give
• 53:01
  it
• 53:02
  another
• 53:02
  try.
• 53:03
  Double
• 53:04
  card
• 53:04
  offseason.
• 53:06
  And
• 53:06
  sure
• 53:06
  enough,
• 53:07
  the
• 53:07
  following
• 53:08
  season,
• 53:08
  I
• 53:09
  had
• 53:09
  my
• 53:09
  best
• 53:10
  motherly
• 53:10
  season.
• 53:11
  I
• 53:12
  went
• 53:12
  from
• 53:12
  AA
• 53:13
  to
• 53:13
  AAA
• 53:14
  and
• 53:14
  City
• 53:14
  Mason
• 53:15
  all
• 53:16
  the
• 53:16
  same
• 53:16
  season.
• 53:18
  And
• 53:19
  I
• 53:19
  was
• 53:20
  this
• 53:20
  close
• 53:21
  to
• 53:21
  quitting.
• 53:22
  So
• 53:22
  I'm
• 53:22
  glad
• 53:23
  that
• 53:23
  I
• 53:23
  did
• 53:23
  not
• 53:24
  quit
• 53:24
  and
• 53:25
  I
• 53:25
  learned
• 53:26
  my
• 53:26
  lesson.
• 53:27
  Just
• 53:28
  never
• 53:28
  quit.
• 53:29
  Says
• 53:29
  always
• 53:30
  to
• 53:30
  believe
• 53:31
  yourself.
• 53:32
  Death,
• 53:32
  it
• 53:32
  is
• 53:33
  just
• 53:33
  more
• 53:33
  crime
• 53:34
  and
• 53:34
  good
• 53:35
  things
• 53:35
  will
• 53:35
  happen.
• 53:36
  There's
• 53:36
  another
• 53:37
  lesson
• 53:37
  for
• 53:38
  the
• 53:38
  kids
• 53:38
  out
• 53:38
  there.
• 53:40
  Don't
• 53:40
  quit,
• 53:41
  stick
• 53:41
  with
• 53:42
  it.
• 53:43
  Better
• 53:43
  things
• 53:44
  will
• 53:44
  happen
• 53:44
  if
• 53:44
  you
• 53:45
  do
• 53:45
  stick
• 53:45
  with
• 53:45
  it.
• 53:46
  That's
• 53:46
  for
• 53:46
  sure.
• 53:47
  Your
• 53:47
  manager,
• 53:47
  Steve
• 53:48
  Swisher
• 53:49
  in
• 53:49
  Binghamton
• 53:50
  believed
• 53:51
  in
• 53:51
  you,
• 53:51
  didn't
• 53:51
  he?
• 53:53
  Yes,
• 53:54
  he
• 53:54
  believed
• 53:54
  in
• 53:54
  me.
• 53:56
  I
• 53:57
  felt
• 53:57
  bad
• 53:57
  because
• 53:58
  he
• 53:58
  worked
• 53:59
  hard
• 53:59
  with
• 53:59
  me
• 53:59
  to
• 54:00
  try
• 54:00
  home,
• 54:01
  correct
• 54:01
  my
• 54:01
  swears
• 54:02
  to
• 54:02
  help
• 54:03
  get
• 54:03
  back
• 54:03
  on
• 54:04
  track.
• 54:04
  But
• 54:05
  I
• 54:05
  was
• 54:05
  a
• 54:05
  little
• 54:05
  frustrated.
• 54:06
  It
• 54:06
  was
• 54:06
  more
• 54:06
  of
• 54:06
  a
• 54:07
  natural
• 54:07
  thing
• 54:07
  for
• 54:08
  me.
• 54:09
  Who
• 54:10
  along
• 54:11
  the
• 54:11
  way
• 54:11
  in
• 54:11
  your
• 54:12
  major
• 54:12
  league
• 54:12
  career,
• 54:13
  Curtis,
• 54:14
  maybe
• 54:14
  you
• 54:15
  were
• 54:15
  on
• 54:15
  the
• 54:15
  field
• 54:15
  with
• 54:15
  them
• 54:16
  at
• 54:16
  the
• 54:16
  same
• 54:16
  time.
• 54:17
  Maybe
• 54:18
  you
• 54:18
  crossed
• 54:18
  paths
• 54:19
  with
• 54:19
  them
• 54:20
  in
• 54:20
  the
• 54:20
  clubhouse.
• 54:21
  Any
• 54:22
  ball
• 54:22
  player
• 54:23
  that
• 54:23
  really
• 54:23
  left
• 54:24
  you
• 54:24
  in
• 54:24
  awe.
• 54:27
  Oh,
• 54:28
  man,
• 54:28
  I
• 54:28
  played
• 54:29
  with
• 54:29
  a
• 54:29
  lot
• 54:29
  of
• 54:30
  Greek
• 54:30
  Furnace.
• 54:31
  No,
• 54:33
  had
• 54:33
  Fred
• 54:33
  Boothies.
• 54:34
  Yeah.
• 54:35
  And
• 54:36
  Dee
• 54:37
  Super
• 54:37
  Jones,
• 54:39
  Gray
• 54:39
  Mattis
• 54:40
  Dill
• 54:41
  Cedar,
• 54:42
  Freddie
• 54:43
  Guerrero,
• 54:45
  all
• 54:46
  those
• 54:46
  guys.
• 54:47
  This
• 54:47
  is
• 54:47
  not
• 54:48
  only
• 54:48
  they
• 54:48
  were
• 54:49
  great
• 54:50
  clients,
• 54:50
  but
• 54:51
  they
• 54:51
  also
• 54:51
  were
• 54:52
  great
• 54:52
  teammates.
• 54:53
  They
• 54:53
  treated
• 54:53
  me
• 54:54
  well,
• 54:54
  and
• 54:54
  I
• 54:55
  appreciate
• 54:56
  it.
• 54:56
  They
• 54:57
  never
• 54:57
  treated
• 54:57
  me
• 54:58
  any
• 54:58
  differently.
• 54:59
  That's
• 55:00
  important.
• 55:01
  That's
• 55:01
  some
• 55:01
  great
• 55:01
  names
• 55:02
  you
• 55:02
  mentioned,
• 55:03
  and
• 55:03
  we're
• 55:03
  glad
• 55:04
  to
• 55:04
  hear
• 55:04
  that
• 55:04
  they
• 55:04
  helped
• 55:05
  you
• 55:05
  along
• 55:05
  the
• 55:05
  way.
• 55:06
  Well,
• 55:06
  Curtis,
• 55:06
  it's
• 55:07
  been
• 55:07
  an
• 55:07
  honor
• 55:08
  and
• 55:08
  a
• 55:08
  pleasure
• 55:08
  speaking
• 55:09
  with
• 55:09
  you
• 55:09
  tonight.
• 55:10
  It
• 55:10
  was
• 55:10
  great
• 55:10
  to
• 55:10
  have
• 55:11
  you
• 55:11
  aboard.
• 55:11
  I
• 55:12
  appreciate
• 55:12
  you
• 55:12
  taking
• 55:13
  time
• 55:13
  out
• 55:13
  of
• 55:13
  your
• 55:14
  Sunday
• 55:14
  night
• 55:14
  away
• 55:15
  from
• 55:15
  your
• 55:15
  family
• 55:16
  to
• 55:16
  spend
• 55:16
  it
• 55:16
  with
• 55:16
  us
• 55:17
  here
• 55:17
  at
• 55:17
  Sports
• 55:17
  Talk
• 55:18
  New
• 55:18
  York.
• 55:18
  The
• 55:18
  book
• 55:19
  again,
• 55:19
  folks,
• 55:20
  I
• 55:20
  felt
• 55:21
