Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There is discontinuity between the Mosaic and the New covenants
- 0:04Speaker 1: as well. First, in the New Covenant, God himself is
- 0:09Speaker 1: our mediator. In the Mosaic covenant, Moses is the mediator,
- 0:14Speaker 1: a mere man is the mediator. But in the New
- 0:18Speaker 1: Covenant we have a better covenant and a better mediator Hebrews.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Chapter eight, Verses six and seven.
- 0:26Speaker 1: But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that
- 0:29Speaker 1: is much more excellent than the old. As the covenant
- 0:34Speaker 1: he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.
- 0:39Speaker 1: For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would
- 0:44Speaker 1: have been no occasion to look for a second Hebrews
- 0:49Speaker 1: three to three. For Jesus has been counted worthy of
- 0:53Speaker 1: more glory than Moses, as much more glory as the
- 0:56Speaker 1: builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Christ is our mediator. God himself is our mediator. This
- 1:12Speaker 1: is discontinuity between the covenants. We do have a man
- 1:18Speaker 1: that stands between us and God's unapproachable light. But the
- 1:22Speaker 1: man that stands between us and God's unapproachable light is
- 1:25Speaker 1: the god Man. He is the second person of the Trinity.
- 1:29Speaker 1: He is Christ, Jesus himself, who took on flesh, who
- 1:34Speaker 1: wrapped that righteousness and holiness in flesh, so that he
- 1:39Speaker 1: could reconcile us to God in his unapproachable light in
- 1:45Speaker 1: the New Covenant. Our cleansing is not merely external Hebrews
- 1:50Speaker 1: Chapter ten, verses nineteen to twenty two. Therefore, brothers, since
- 1:55Speaker 1: we have confidence to enter the Holy Place by the
- 1:57Speaker 1: blood of Jesus, by the new and l living way
- 2:00Speaker 1: that he opened for us through the curtain, that is
- 2:03Speaker 1: through his flesh. And since we have a great priest
- 2:07Speaker 1: over the House of God, let us draw near with
- 2:10Speaker 1: a true heart, in full assurance of faith, with our
- 2:14Speaker 1: hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience, and our bodies
- 2:18Speaker 1: washed with pure water. Yeah, there's a washing, but it's
- 2:24Speaker 1: not the same. This is a washing from the inside out.
- 2:29Speaker 1: This is not just clean up your garments on the
- 2:31Speaker 1: outside and observe a few rules before you come into
- 2:36Speaker 1: the presence.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Of Almighty God.
- 2:38Speaker 1: This is be changed from the inside out, not so
- 2:43Speaker 1: that you can come before the presence of God, but
- 2:46Speaker 1: so that you can be in dwelled by the very
- 2:49Speaker 1: presence of God who dwells in unapproachable light.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Oh, this is superior friends, this is greater beyond that.
- 3:05Speaker 1: We find that God was never satisfied with mere outward washing.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Turn to the right and look at the book of Isaiah.
- 3:13Speaker 1: You'll find something very interesting. Remember we talked about progressive revelation,
- 3:18Speaker 1: about God revealing himself to his people progressively over history
- 3:22Speaker 1: and through time. And here what we've got so far
- 3:25Speaker 1: is clean your garments before you come in the presence
- 3:27Speaker 1: of God. Isaiah chapter one. Go down to verse number ten.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Hear the word of the Lord. Your rulers of Sodom,
- 3:36Speaker 1: give ear to the teaching of our God. You people
- 3:39Speaker 1: of Gomora. By the way, Sodom and Gomorrah are toast,
- 3:41Speaker 1: They're gone. He's not writing to Sodom and Gomorrah. He's
- 3:45Speaker 1: writing to Israel, and he's referring to them as Sodom
- 3:49Speaker 1: and Gomorrah. He's making a point here verse eleven. What
- 3:56Speaker 1: to me is the multitude of your sacrifices, says the Lord.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and
- 4:03Speaker 1: the fat of well fed beasts. I do not delight
- 4:07Speaker 1: in the blood of bulls, or lambs or goats. When
- 4:10Speaker 1: you come to appear before me, who has required of
- 4:13Speaker 1: you this trampling of my courts. Bring no more vain offerings,
- 4:18Speaker 1: incenses and abomination to me. New moon and Sabbath and
- 4:22Speaker 1: the calling of convocations. I cannot endure inequity and solemn assembly,
- 4:31Speaker 1: your new moons and your appointed feast. My soul hates
- 4:35Speaker 1: they have become a burden to me. I am weary
- 4:37Speaker 1: of bearing them. When you spread out your hands, I
- 4:41Speaker 1: will hide my eyes from you. Even though you make
- 4:43Speaker 1: many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full
- 4:46Speaker 1: of blood. Well, what's wrong? What do you need to do?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Next? Verse?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean, Remove the evil of your
- 4:55Speaker 1: deeds from before my eyes.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Cease to do evil, learn to do good, Seek.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Justice, correct oppression, Bring justice to the fatherless. Plead the
- 5:07Speaker 1: case of the widow. Come now, let us reason together,
- 5:11Speaker 1: says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they
- 5:14Speaker 1: shall be as white as snow. Though they are red
- 5:18Speaker 1: like crimson, they shall become like woe. We're not even
- 5:24Speaker 1: at the new Covenant yet, and already God is communicating
- 5:28Speaker 1: to his people Outward washing is not enough. This is
- 5:33Speaker 1: what the Pharisees didn't understand Matthew twenty three, twenty five
- 5:37Speaker 1: and twenty six. Woe do you, scribes and pharisees, hypocrites,
- 5:41Speaker 1: For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate,
- 5:45Speaker 1: but inside they are full of greed and self indulgence.
- 5:49Speaker 1: You blind pharisees, first clean the inside of the cup
- 5:53Speaker 1: and the plate, that the outside may also be clean.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Jesus didn't say the outside doesn't matter her.
- 6:01Speaker 2: He said the.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Inside has priority, and that if you clean the inside,
- 6:05Speaker 1: the outside becomes clean.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Can a streetwalker walking to a church looking like a streetwalker?
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yes she can.
- 6:14Speaker 1: But if God, who dwells in unapproachable light, redeems her
- 6:20Speaker 1: and transforms her, will she still continue to walk into
- 6:24Speaker 1: church looking like a streetwalker? You better believe she won't.
- 6:30Speaker 1: She won't because what she will be communicating is a
- 6:37Speaker 1: reality that is no longer consistent with that which she
- 6:42Speaker 1: communicated before. We see washing connected with our very regeneration,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and Titus three four to seven. We have the washing
- 6:51Speaker 1: of regeneration. We have washing connected with our justification one Grinthians,
- 6:56Speaker 1: chapter six, that famous passage, and such.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Worse of you, but you were washed.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Washing, of course, is also equated with our sanctification. Husbands
- 7:08Speaker 1: are to love their wives like Christ love the church
- 7:11Speaker 1: and he gave himself up for her that he might
- 7:12Speaker 1: sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water
- 7:17Speaker 1: with the word. So in our justification and our sanctification
- 7:22Speaker 1: and our regeneration, we see this idea of washing.
- 7:25Speaker 2: We are washed, and we are made cling.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And it is because of this washing that we are
- 7:30Speaker 1: consecrated and made ready to come before the presence of God,
- 7:34Speaker 1: and to even be in dwelt by the presence of God. Thirdly,
- 7:41Speaker 1: in the New Covenant, God comes to us, not the mountain.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's amazing that in the Mosaic Covenant, ear God says,
- 7:52Speaker 1: I'm going to come to the mountain, and the people
- 7:56Speaker 1: are going to see me come to the mountain, but
- 7:58Speaker 1: they can't come to close. In the New Covenant, God's
- 8:03Speaker 1: dwelling place is with men again. First Corinthians six nineteen
- 8:09Speaker 1: to twenty. Or do you not know that your body
- 8:11Speaker 1: is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom
- 8:15Speaker 1: you have from God. You are not your own, for
- 8:18Speaker 1: you were bought with a price. So glorify God in
- 8:21Speaker 1: your body. Again, the connection between the inward and the outward,
- 8:26Speaker 1: but it begins on the inside, not on the outside. Finally,
- 8:34Speaker 1: in the New covenant. Another has taken our penalty. You
- 8:40Speaker 1: and I are not worthy to approach God, who dwells
- 8:44Speaker 1: in unapproachable light, and coming as close to God as
- 8:48Speaker 1: you and I have come requires death. And that's exactly
- 8:58Speaker 1: what was paid on our back, so that we might
- 9:02Speaker 1: approach God, so that we might know God, and so
- 9:06Speaker 1: that God might in dwell us. Christ died for sin,
- 9:12Speaker 1: once for all, the just, for the unjust, in order
- 9:16Speaker 1: that he might bring us back to God. All we,
- 9:21Speaker 1: like sheep, had gone astray. Each of us had turned
- 9:24Speaker 1: to his own way. But God hath laid upon him
- 9:27Speaker 1: the iniquity of us all. It is because of the
- 9:30Speaker 1: death of Christ that you and I have the privilege
- 9:34Speaker 1: of approaching this holy and righteous God. It is because
- 9:40Speaker 1: of that that we have the privilege of coming boldly
- 9:44Speaker 1: before the throne of Grace, instead of cowering and fear
- 9:50Speaker 1: like Israel of old, who didn't want to get too
- 9:53Speaker 1: close lest they be put to death. You and I
- 9:56Speaker 1: come boldly, and we cry out Ahbah, Father, and we
- 10:01Speaker 1: are dwelt by God himself.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Do you understand this? Can you comprehend it?
- 10:14Speaker 1: This is why it is so wrong for us to
- 10:17Speaker 1: look at a text like this and come away with
- 10:21Speaker 1: we need to do a better job of getting ready
- 10:24Speaker 1: outwardly to come to church.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Lord help us. That's why we've missed the boat.
- 10:32Speaker 1: If that's the way we approach things like this, and
- 10:35Speaker 1: unfortunately this is often the way we approach.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Things like this.
- 10:42Speaker 1: But when you understand this reality, you don't come to
- 10:46Speaker 1: a place where you say, ah, the outside doesn't matter. No,
- 10:50Speaker 1: We've seen through several texts in the New Testament that
- 10:55Speaker 1: the outside does matter, and when the inside is cleaned up,
- 11:00Speaker 1: it manifests itself on the outside. Not so that we
- 11:08Speaker 1: can somehow come to a place where we believe we've
- 11:11Speaker 1: made ourselves ready and righteous by what we've done, but
- 11:17Speaker 1: we come to a place where we understand that Christ
- 11:21Speaker 1: has made us ready and righteous by what he has done,
- 11:26Speaker 1: and we enter as children of the King. When we come,
- 11:30Speaker 1: there is still consecration. But what this consecration looks like
- 11:36Speaker 1: is being reminded of the sin that is in our lives,
- 11:43Speaker 1: being reminded that Christ has purchased our ransom and has
- 11:49Speaker 1: forgiven us, being reminded of the gratitude that we owe
- 11:55Speaker 1: to him because He has made us right with God
- 12:00Speaker 1: and given us the privilege of approaching God, coming before
- 12:04Speaker 1: God in an attitude of humility, because we do not
- 12:07Speaker 1: approach God, who dwells in unapproachable light, because of our
- 12:12Speaker 1: own merit, but because of the alien righteousness that has
- 12:16Speaker 1: been imputed to us by Christ himself, having earned this
- 12:21Speaker 1: right through his death on the cross. When we understand that,
- 12:26Speaker 1: we can no longer be flippant about approaching God.
- 12:31Speaker 2: When we were in.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Israel, one of the places that I found fascinating. Two
- 12:38Speaker 1: places that I found fascinating were, of course the Temple
- 12:43Speaker 1: mount but also Kumaran, where we found the Kumaran scrolls.
- 12:49Speaker 1: There the temple mountain. Outside the temple, outside the steps,
- 12:59Speaker 1: there are these pools, these pools everywhere they used to
- 13:04Speaker 1: wonder how they baptized thousands of people in the day.
- 13:08Speaker 1: These pools are called mikvas, and they are, you know,
- 13:12Speaker 1: like small swimming pools with stairs going down and then
- 13:16Speaker 1: coming out. And before coming into the temple, the people
- 13:21Speaker 1: of God would come and disrobe and go down into
- 13:26Speaker 1: these mikvahs and immerse themselves in the water, and then
- 13:33Speaker 1: come back out and put on new clothes and go
- 13:35Speaker 1: in the group at Kumaran was a group called the
- 13:38Speaker 1: Essenes and the Aessines had these massive libraries and scrolls
- 13:45Speaker 1: that were incredibly important to them. But before they would
- 13:49Speaker 1: touch any of these scrolls, they had mikvahs all around
- 13:53Speaker 1: where they would immerse themselves to become clean before they
- 14:01Speaker 1: would come out and handle the word of God. And
- 14:05Speaker 1: it was amazing to contemplate the number of times that
- 14:09Speaker 1: these individuals would go into this water and out of
- 14:12Speaker 1: this water, and into this water and out of this
- 14:13Speaker 1: water before they would eat, before they would do this,
- 14:15Speaker 1: before they would do that, this baptism of sorts, that
- 14:22Speaker 1: they would experience, all of this outward rossick washing, being
- 14:26Speaker 1: reminded constantly that I am filthy, that I am not worthy.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Interestingly enough, we still, when we come to faith in Christ,
- 14:38Speaker 1: experience that same washing where we go down into the
- 14:43Speaker 1: waters of baptism and come out of them. And the
- 14:51Speaker 1: picture that we are painting is a picture of Christ
- 14:53Speaker 1: being buried in his death and then coming out of
- 14:59Speaker 1: the grave in his resurrection to walk in newness of
- 15:03Speaker 1: life and listen. Just like Christ does not have to
- 15:07Speaker 1: be buried again, you and I don't have to be
- 15:10Speaker 1: baptized again to come before the presence of God, because
- 15:15Speaker 1: we are baptized into Christ. We are immersed into Christ.
- 15:22Speaker 1: And because of that, His righteousness is our righteousness. His
- 15:30Speaker 1: holiness is our holiness. It is not something that we earn,
- 15:39Speaker 1: It is something that has been freely given.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Listen to me.
- 15:45Speaker 1: If you are here today and you are trying to
- 15:49Speaker 1: be good enough for God outwardly, let me tell you
- 15:53Speaker 1: two things. Number one, you can't get there from here.
- 15:56Speaker 1: It won't work, it'll never happen. You can't do it.
- 16:02Speaker 1: And number two, you don't have to. Christ has accomplished
- 16:09Speaker 1: that on behalf of all of those who will come
- 16:13Speaker 1: to him in repentance and faith.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Stop striving, Stop seeking.
- 16:24Speaker 1: That which is already found in Christ. Cease your efforts
- 16:31Speaker 1: at self righteousness, look to the cross, and right now
- 16:37Speaker 1: recognize that Christ has accomplished that which you never could.
- 16:42Speaker 1: And right now recognize that what is required is for
- 16:45Speaker 1: you to come to Him in repentance and faith and
- 16:48Speaker 1: turn from your sin and turn to Christ so that
- 16:52Speaker 1: He might wash you, so that he might make you hope,
- 16:58Speaker 1: so that He might justify you and sanctify you. And
- 17:04Speaker 1: that God by the power and presence of His Holy Spirit,
- 17:10Speaker 1: God who dwells an unapproachable light, might endwell you and
- 17:18Speaker 1: consecrate you fully. What a tragedy it would be to
- 17:25Speaker 1: walk away from a text like this saying to ourselves
- 17:29Speaker 1: we need to do a better job of cleaning up
- 17:31Speaker 1: the outside of the cup. What a tragedy it would
- 17:34Speaker 1: be to miss what we've learned through progressive revelation, as
- 17:40Speaker 1: God has made this picture clearer and clearer and clearer,
- 17:46Speaker 1: until through the person and work of Christ we see
- 17:51Speaker 1: fully what it means to be consecrated in the presence
- 17:55Speaker 1: of the One true and Living God.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Oh, I would ask you to be consecrated day.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I would ask you to be clean to day, not
- 18:05Speaker 1: because of what you do to the outside, but because
- 18:10Speaker 1: of what Christ does to the inside when you come
- 18:14Speaker 1: to Him in repentance and faith, pleading for and finding
- 18:19Speaker 1: his forgiveness, and as a result, walking in His righteousness.
