- 0:34what is going on everybody
- 0:36welcome to the coffee
- 0:38edition of gladsdale media
- 0:40podcast where we're
- 0:41featuring the athletes of
- 0:42the 2024 crossfit game
- 0:44semifinals and I'm so
- 0:47pumped to have my dear
- 0:48friend lisa goffy on the
- 0:50show fee how you doing good
- 0:51morning just like you said
- 0:53coffee talk we're ready
- 0:55we're ready the thing
- 0:58that's gonna kick it off
- 0:59right except mine says uh
- 1:02this is one of my favorite
- 1:02mugs it says tequila
- 1:07hope you're not adding that
- 1:08to the coffee before
- 1:09training no definitely not
- 1:12but I probably I will
- 1:14probably be having some
- 1:15hopefully hopefully some
- 1:16celebratory tequila after
- 1:18semi-finals is is uh done
- 1:22very well and dusted but
- 1:25we're here enjoying coffee
- 1:26first so you like your
- 1:28tequila straight up or
- 1:30mixed with something I love honestly
- 1:33If it's very good tequila,
- 1:37I'll just enjoy it like
- 1:39straight and actually enjoy,
- 1:42like truly like sip on it.
- 1:43You don't just kind of like,
- 1:44like very good quality tequila.
- 1:46My abuelo always had tequila
- 1:52time around four o'clock
- 1:53and he would just sit on
- 1:54his chair and just like slowly sip,
- 1:56like truly enjoying.
- 1:58So yeah, so I could do that with good,
- 2:00very good tequila, but then
- 2:02Other ones where you're just
- 2:03kind of like hoping it goes down smooth,
- 2:05the salt, the lime,
- 2:07or just like mixed in the
- 2:08drinks is always nice.
- 2:10But either way.
- 2:11So Jake Chapman said, this is coffee talk.
- 2:16That's clever.
- 2:17Why haven't I thought of that?
- 2:19Yes.
- 2:19Yes, Jake.
- 2:22I love that.
- 2:23Corey Leonard says, tequila for breakfast.
- 2:25I've been going about my
- 2:26training all wrong.
- 2:26There it is.
- 2:29That's okay.
- 2:29Do you know?
- 2:30Tequila's a probiotic.
- 2:31It's very good for you.
- 2:32Very good for your gut.
- 2:34Paper Street should do a limited edition.
- 2:38Yes.
- 2:39Like a Paloma coffee.
- 2:40I love the way she says tequila.
- 2:45Gracias.
- 2:46Thank you very much.
- 2:47It's the proper way to say it.
- 2:49Everyone should say it like that.
- 2:52Even like gringos.
- 2:54Tequila.
- 2:55Tequila.
- 2:57you go but I gotta say I i
- 2:59do have it with my what
- 3:01like I'll sip on my coffee
- 3:03not thinking sip my coffee
- 3:05and then I have my water my
- 3:06relay my salt water so I'm
- 3:08like dehydrating hydrating
- 3:10dehydrating there's a
- 3:13method here way to do it
- 3:14this way to do it yeah
- 3:15especially when you're a
- 3:16week out from semis yeah I
- 3:19uh so I train at noon so I
- 3:21the my morning is coffee
- 3:23and water coffee and water
- 3:24because I can't go train at noon and
- 3:27be all dehydrated.
- 3:29Oh yeah.
- 3:29I've done that many,
- 3:30like way too many times where, you know,
- 3:34during breakfast, I'm drinking my coffee.
- 3:36I'm taking the morning the way that I,
- 3:37that I need to,
- 3:38to get ready for training.
- 3:40And then I'll get to the gym
- 3:41and sometimes I'll be like, oh, my God,
- 3:43I haven't had a sip of
- 3:44water yet because I'm just
- 3:45like enjoying my coffee so much.
- 3:48And and then I get to the
- 3:50gym and right now I'm in Jacksonville.
- 3:51So it's like eighty seven degrees,
- 3:5390 degrees every day.
- 3:55And you're just like, I did.
- 3:58I totally forgot what I
- 3:59actually should be doing in the morning,
- 4:01which is drinking water
- 4:02first and then going into the day.
- 4:05But it's OK.
- 4:07So you've made the move
- 4:08across the state of Florida
- 4:10from Naples to Jacksonville
- 4:12and way north.
- 4:14Yeah, way north.
- 4:15One day and then completely
- 4:17opposite direction.
- 4:18So I used to live in Tallahassee.
- 4:21So in the armpit.
- 4:23Yeah.
- 4:24And then my cousin,
- 4:25who is like a brother to me,
- 4:27he was stationed in Navy in Jacksonville.
- 4:29So I made that like I drive all the time.
- 4:32I didn't realize how big Jacksonville was.
- 4:36First of all,
- 4:36just like the size of Jacksonville.
- 4:38And no one knows how to drive.
- 4:40Oh, no one.
- 4:41No one.
- 4:42Oh my gosh.
- 4:43Everyone's so mean.
- 4:44Everyone's so awful.
- 4:47I've seen many accidents,
- 4:50like just like driving by
- 4:52and you could tell it was
- 4:53like just a dumb accident and very silly.
- 4:56But everyone drives in a way
- 4:58that's like almost an accident.
- 5:00Like you're driving and you're like,
- 5:01oh my God,
- 5:02that could have been something insane.
- 5:04And I've driven by many awful accidents.
- 5:08There was one that I, the gym,
- 5:10from my apartment to the gym,
- 5:12it should take 10,
- 5:14no more than 12 minutes to get there.
- 5:16It's just like one smooth
- 5:17exit off the highway.
- 5:19And it took me 40 minutes to,
- 5:21Because by the time I merged
- 5:23onto this exit,
- 5:25I'm only one exit off to get to the gym,
- 5:28it was just backed up traffic.
- 5:29And it was a car that was driving,
- 5:32wasn't looking where they were driving.
- 5:33They probably slammed on their brakes.
- 5:34And there was a truck in front of them.
- 5:36This car just slammed just
- 5:38underneath this pickup truck.
- 5:39This pickup truck flew up.
- 5:41And it was almost at this 45-degree angle.
- 5:45And I had just gotten to this accident.
- 5:49Ambulance hadn't even gotten there.
- 5:52Crazy.
- 5:53Every time I was there,
- 5:54there was some kind of accident,
- 5:55some kind of backup.
- 5:57Our favorite thing to do was to go to St.
- 5:59Augustine.
- 6:02I haven't gone yet.
- 6:03That's one of my bucket lists.
- 6:05It's on the to-do places
- 6:07here in Jacksonville or around.
- 6:09We're going to do that after.
- 6:11For someone with Latin background,
- 6:13I cannot believe you've not been to St.
- 6:16Augustine.
- 6:17No, I know.
- 6:18It was a Spanish settlement and
- 6:20I didn't know that.
- 6:21No,
- 6:21there's so much history that I need to
- 6:23learn from there.
- 6:23I've just heard how beautiful it is.
- 6:26And how it's so close, like 40.
- 6:29It's a 40 minute drive from here.
- 6:30And I just haven't made it.
- 6:33It's one of those things where when I go,
- 6:35I want to spend the entire day there.
- 6:38And where training has been since I mean,
- 6:40we moved here in January.
- 6:43And by the time we moved,
- 6:44everyone immediately is like, you know,
- 6:47with all you got to go here,
- 6:49you got to go to St.
- 6:50Augustine,
- 6:50you got to try these restaurants,
- 6:51you got to do this and that.
- 6:52And you're just like, I just got here.
- 6:54And all I need to focus on
- 6:56is just training.
- 6:57Because by that time, it was like,
- 6:59Wadapalooza.
- 7:00And then a month later, it's the open.
- 7:02And then a month later,
- 7:02it's quarterfinals.
- 7:03And you're just like,
- 7:04I don't even have an entire,
- 7:06the days that we do get to ourselves,
- 7:08you just kind of want to chill and
- 7:10so after semifinals I'm
- 7:11hoping to just like take a
- 7:13week off and explore and do
- 7:15all the fun stuff so are
- 7:17you are you living in
- 7:18jacksonville full-time or
- 7:19just there for training
- 7:21yeah I'm here full-time I
- 7:23since I went full-time in
- 7:26the sport with training and
- 7:28just you know living here
- 7:30in florida since last year
- 7:31so I moved to naples last
- 7:34was it last november last
- 7:36november yes last november no
- 7:39Two Novembers ago.
- 7:41Gosh, I can't even keep track.
- 7:44But yeah,
- 7:44and then was there with my coach
- 7:46and the whole training camp.
- 7:47That's when Matt Torres had
- 7:49five of us go to the games that year.
- 7:52That was that year that I
- 7:54decided to move and made it happen.
- 7:56And then literally a year later,
- 7:58we didn't see this coming, right?
- 7:59Like this was something that, you know,
- 8:02was in the works like maybe
- 8:05well over half of that year
- 8:07and then all of a sudden an
- 8:08opportunity came up and
- 8:10matt was like hey this is
- 8:11my vision this is my plan
- 8:12for the camp and the
- 8:14business and you know what
- 8:16do you guys think um and we
- 8:18pretty much were just like
- 8:19okay wherever you go we go
- 8:21and sure enough the
- 8:22decision from to
- 8:23jacksonville happened and
- 8:24we're just like okay we're doing it
- 8:29Yeah, and Jacksonville is a little,
- 8:31it was like an old OG
- 8:33hotbed for CrossFit.
- 8:36Like there's a lot of
- 8:37athletes in Jacksonville.
- 8:40Who are the OGs out of this area?
- 8:44So she goes by Jen Smash on Instagram.
- 8:48Jen Dieter.
- 8:49Jen Dieter.
- 8:50Okay.
- 8:53You had to put me on the spot, didn't you?
- 8:54I know.
- 8:56I was waiting for you to just be like, one,
- 8:59two.
- 9:00I'm sure there's plenty more.
- 9:02There actually really are a ton.
- 9:04There are a lot of CrossFit
- 9:05affiliates in Jacksonville, though.
- 9:08I feel like within a couple mile radius,
- 9:11there's another one.
- 9:12I mean, there's two.
- 9:14I think there's one downtown
- 9:15in Jack's Beach or around Jack's Beach.
- 9:18called Total Control that we've been to,
- 9:20great community there.
- 9:21And that affiliate has another location,
- 9:24like two separate locations
- 9:26within literally the same city,
- 9:28the same zip code, I feel like.
- 9:30And then where we're at,
- 9:32we're at CrossFit Tailwinds.
- 9:34But maybe, you know, two, three,
- 9:36four miles down the road,
- 9:37there's another affiliate.
- 9:39So they're pretty like,
- 9:40they're right next to each other.
- 9:42I think Sean Woodland
- 9:44actually came from there as well.
- 9:46He was a sportscaster on the
- 9:47local TV station, got into CrossFit,
- 9:50and that's how he... Wow.
- 9:53Well, not surprising with like...
- 9:56sports being so big here, you know,
- 9:58it's a beautiful, I mean,
- 9:59it's an area where a ton of people come,
- 10:02um, just in general, I think to vacation,
- 10:04to watch the Jags, you know,
- 10:05they got the NFL team here.
- 10:07And I mean, it's a few, I heard,
- 10:09I think there's a running
- 10:10joke that someone told me
- 10:12that it takes him.
- 10:13I think it was about
- 10:14Jacksonville that you could
- 10:15like drive an hour and
- 10:17still be in Jacksonville, the whole,
- 10:19the whole city.
- 10:20I can see that.
- 10:22Yeah.
- 10:25We can move on from Jackson.
- 10:28We haven't even touched
- 10:29anything I had planned,
- 10:30which is the way I deal with you, Fi.
- 10:32Yes.
- 10:33It's okay.
- 10:35It's a good problem.
- 10:38But there are some comments.
- 10:40I'm almost afraid to put
- 10:41this in because it's in Spanish,
- 10:43and I got a D in high school Spanish,
- 10:45so here we go.
- 10:45I think that's... I think wasabi...
- 10:53Uh, Google translated, see,
- 10:56is that a question mark?
- 10:58Maybe is that a question?
- 10:59Tequila para desayuno.
- 11:02He goes, uh,
- 11:03is fee drunk and tequila for breakfast.
- 11:11But that was a good, that was a good, uh,
- 11:14maybe that was a good statement.
- 11:16That's a good try on the grammar.
- 11:17Yeah.
- 11:20no we are not drunk effort
- 11:21effort was there so it's
- 11:23been been a long time since
- 11:26you've been on the show if
- 11:27we're truly friends like
- 11:29we've let it go too long
- 11:32honestly I can't I really
- 11:35can't our last interview
- 11:36was last for last semis I
- 11:38think right it was right
- 11:40before the games it was
- 11:41right before the games okay
- 11:43yeah still either way way
- 11:44too long that was almost a
- 11:46year ago then I know
- 11:49Unacceptable.
- 11:50Because we didn't get to talk about this.
- 11:53Oh, gosh.
- 11:53A lot of things.
- 11:54Yes.
- 11:55A ton of things happened.
- 11:56Not just like the games,
- 11:58like after the games.
- 11:59Yeah.
- 12:00You got married.
- 12:01You're not two anymore.
- 12:02We got married.
- 12:03You know what?
- 12:05I've been meaning to change my last name.
- 12:08Fee Sagafi legally still is my name.
- 12:11And I'm just like, I need to change.
- 12:13I want to change my last name.
- 12:14I'm going to.
- 12:14I'm a Ferrara.
- 12:15I'm a Ferrara.
- 12:16And I have yet to get to it
- 12:18because then it's just a lot of, you know,
- 12:21I just didn't get to it.
- 12:23And now I'm just a week out from semis.
- 12:25And I'm like,
- 12:26can I change my last name before semis?
- 12:28So when they call my name,
- 12:29it's Fee Ferrara.
- 12:31And today I will make it a
- 12:32point to start the documentation.
- 12:35So hopefully by next week, at least,
- 12:37could legally say in some
- 12:39way I'm a ferrara because I
- 12:41am that's my husband alex
- 12:42ferrer I'll tell you this
- 12:46you may be able to do it
- 12:47legally in the united
- 12:48states to do that but
- 12:52crossfit it's like an act
- 12:53of god to change your name
- 12:55in their documentation is
- 12:57it is it so does it annoy them
- 13:00Well, I mean,
- 13:01a lot of people have gotten
- 13:03married and tried to change their names.
- 13:05And it's always taken longer
- 13:07than they thought.
- 13:08I know, like,
- 13:09Bethany Flores wanted that changed.
- 13:12And, like, at semis,
- 13:13she was still Shadburn.
- 13:16Yeah.
- 13:18Because that's what it's...
- 13:19When you acknowledge someone or, you know,
- 13:22say someone, an athlete's name,
- 13:24you know them by, like, their full name,
- 13:26right?
- 13:27And first and last name.
- 13:29But I feel like for me,
- 13:30maybe that's an exception.
- 13:31I don't know.
- 13:31I hope it's an exception
- 13:32because there's no other Fi.
- 13:34So maybe it's just Fi.
- 13:36Or Fi Ferreira.
- 13:36I don't know.
- 13:38Although Fi Ferreira sounds
- 13:40freaking awesome.
- 13:42It sounds fast.
- 13:43Like it sounds like I should be like, well,
- 13:48it works because I'm in the
- 13:49sport of being fast, right?
- 13:50Fi Ferreira.
- 13:53It feels like I'm just like zooming.
- 13:56Ferrari.
- 13:58Fi Ferrari.
- 13:59Yeah.
- 13:59More like it because you are so fast.
- 14:02Yes.
- 14:03My husband, in college,
- 14:06he played football for Mount Union.
- 14:08I don't know if anyone else
- 14:10is out there that knows Mount Union,
- 14:12but Mount Union is a very
- 14:13recognized Division III football program.
- 14:15Oh, my God.
- 14:17Yes.
- 14:18Wait, have you told me that before?
- 14:20Well, I mean, I live here in Ohio.
- 14:23Yeah, but, like, not everyone knows.
- 14:25I don't know.
- 14:26They didn't lose for, like,
- 14:28five years in a row.
- 14:28That's true.
- 14:30Well, I don't want to assume,
- 14:31but that's awesome that you know that.
- 14:33Then, yes.
- 14:34So, anyways, so they called him Rari,
- 14:37like his nickname within his teammates,
- 14:41Rari for Ferrari.
- 14:43But, yeah, I like it.
- 14:47Just don't do the dash last name, please.
- 14:49No.
- 14:50Too much.
- 14:51That's too much.
- 14:53Yeah,
- 14:53I feel like people would get way too
- 14:55confused.
- 14:55And also, that's a lot of name.
- 14:58You know, like Sagafi, Ferrara.
- 15:02There's like so much.
- 15:03I mean, it's beautiful.
- 15:04I think it's beautiful to
- 15:05keep my culture in there, my last name.
- 15:08But I'm deciding for just
- 15:10personal reasons to change my last name.
- 15:12Just think of the logistics
- 15:14on the jersey when you get to the games.
- 15:16Gosh.
- 15:17Like sitting it all on there.
- 15:19Yeah.
- 15:20That's got,
- 15:21I'm actually thinking of
- 15:22everyone that does that job.
- 15:24So I'm just trying to be my phone number.
- 15:28See, if you just go one name, Fee.
- 15:30I know.
- 15:32Done.
- 15:33That's it.
- 15:34Honestly,
- 15:35it's probably nice for
- 15:38commentators and MCs to
- 15:41just have to say Fee.
- 15:43I remember at my first regionals in 2018.
- 15:4620 Yeah, 2018.
- 15:49Someone can't I can't even
- 15:50remember someone came up to me.
- 15:52Um, and someone's like,
- 15:53How do you want us to
- 15:54pronounce your name?
- 15:55Do you have a nickname?
- 15:56I'm like, Yes, just say fee, say fee.
- 15:58And then like, ever since then,
- 16:00they were like, Oh, thank God.
- 16:00That's easy.
- 16:03They scratched out like the rest,
- 16:05like the rest of my name are OZH.
- 16:08I just like I physically saw
- 16:09them like be like, perfect.
- 16:11Circle Fe.
- 16:13Does your family still call
- 16:15you by your full name?
- 16:16Oh yeah.
- 16:17Yeah.
- 16:17If you do say is like,
- 16:19I've never heard my family
- 16:21call me fee other than like text.
- 16:24They'll shoot me a quick text, um,
- 16:27you know, fee.
- 16:28But other than that,
- 16:29when they're addressing me in person,
- 16:31it's fee to say every time.
- 16:33And I love my name, if you will say.
- 16:36When I was younger,
- 16:36I did it just because I always got,
- 16:38I didn't get made fun of,
- 16:39but teachers would butcher
- 16:41it and it would just sound so ugly.
- 16:43Like when you mispronounce a beautiful,
- 16:45like a name, you're mispronouncing it,
- 16:49your mispronunciation is
- 16:51probably so bad that you're just like,
- 16:53just don't say it.
- 16:54Yeah, yeah, it's,
- 16:58thank goodness Scott is very easy,
- 17:00but my last name,
- 17:01he's never gotten it right.
- 17:03You pronounce it.
- 17:05It's Switzer.
- 17:07Switzer.
- 17:08What do people typically say?
- 17:09Switzer.
- 17:10Switzer.
- 17:11Yeah, Switzer.
- 17:13Is it with just an I or E-I or I?
- 17:16Just an I. Oh, yeah.
- 17:19When my ancestors came to the country,
- 17:20it was S-C-H-W-E-I.
- 17:23Mm, S-C-H-W-E-I.
- 17:26Yeah.
- 17:27Yeah, so very German.
- 17:29Well, you it's funny.
- 17:31It's Fidu says a Persian, you know,
- 17:33Iranian name, 100 percent.
- 17:37But most actually the
- 17:38typical spelling or a very
- 17:40common spelling is F.I.R.U.
- 17:46Z.E.H.
- 17:46F.I.R.U.
- 17:47Z.E.H.
- 17:48And the older that I got,
- 17:50the more I realized I think
- 17:52my parents gave me a phonetic spelling.
- 17:54Like truly like the phonetic
- 17:56spelling of Fiduze.
- 17:59It's F-E-E-F-I-R-U-Z-E.
- 18:02And it's like the phonetic spelling.
- 18:06Because when people break it down,
- 18:08it's like, oh, that makes sense.
- 18:09Yeah.
- 18:11When I see the names that kids have today,
- 18:13I would kill to have a
- 18:15phonetic spelling of anything.
- 18:18Yes.
- 18:19You got letters in them that
- 18:21don't make sense, but...
- 18:22So was the wedding
- 18:24everything you dreamed to be?
- 18:27It was the most magical, beautiful,
- 18:30everything,
- 18:31like everything that I wanted
- 18:33to happen happened.
- 18:36when it came to the weather
- 18:37when it came to you know
- 18:39how it all came together
- 18:40from the ceremony to the
- 18:42party to the you know our
- 18:43friends coming in a couple
- 18:44days prior to being able to
- 18:47enjoy even days after the
- 18:49wedding like it truly felt
- 18:50not just like a wedding day
- 18:52it felt like it was it was
- 18:53a wedding week it was just
- 18:55pure celebration of
- 18:57love and friends and friends
- 18:59that we haven't seen in such a long time.
- 19:02And, you know,
- 19:03families coming together for
- 19:04the first time.
- 19:05Oh, it was beautiful.
- 19:06It was everything I could
- 19:07have ever asked for after the games.
- 19:10And the games definitely
- 19:12didn't finish the way that
- 19:14I was hoping to finish.
- 19:15But it was nice to have that
- 19:17the week afterwards.
- 19:18Like I have something that's
- 19:21way more valuable to me in my life,
- 19:24which is obviously my wedding day.
- 19:28Is it important to find that
- 19:30prioritization in life?
- 19:32Like as an athlete,
- 19:34it's really easy to get
- 19:35wrapped up into your
- 19:36identity as an athlete,
- 19:38but you're so much more than that.
- 19:40And now you,
- 19:41you have a husband and you had
- 19:43this amazing wedding and
- 19:44you have this life you get
- 19:45to build together.
- 19:47Did it help you kind of
- 19:48reset those priorities?
- 19:50Oh yeah.
- 19:51I think that year was, it was,
- 19:55the start of that season, you know,
- 19:57was the start of, for me,
- 19:59it was having taking the risk,
- 20:02going from Cleveland to moving all my,
- 20:04you know, my life to Naples.
- 20:07And it
- 20:08My world just revolved
- 20:09around the sport and making
- 20:11it back and doing
- 20:12everything I could and
- 20:13sacrificing home and
- 20:16bringing my husband along this ride.
- 20:19He took a risk on moving
- 20:22from Cleveland to Naples
- 20:23because he works for a firm in Cleveland.
- 20:26And taking that risk and for
- 20:27them to keep him within the firm,
- 20:30like that was like everything.
- 20:32So everything revolved
- 20:33around CrossFit during that time.
- 20:35And then, you know,
- 20:37the year started to unravel
- 20:39and I continued hard in the sport.
- 20:41But then you have your
- 20:42family and now you're
- 20:45my family is him right my
- 20:46family is what we're you
- 20:48know our new chapter and so
- 20:50it it started to not just
- 20:51become about me and the
- 20:52sport it started to become
- 20:54about us and being a team
- 20:56and working together for
- 20:57each other and pulling each
- 20:58other along and so you you
- 21:01have you start to live that
- 21:02chapter and everything
- 21:04starts to be filled with
- 21:05much more purpose and much more intention
- 21:08And so when things do get hard,
- 21:11you don't just have yourself to rely on,
- 21:14right?
- 21:14Or just the one thing that
- 21:15you love in the moment,
- 21:17which is your sport,
- 21:18which is the thing that
- 21:19puts food on the table for me.
- 21:20But now I have, you know,
- 21:22that fire under me because
- 21:24my purpose revolves around being
- 21:27a better wife, being, you know,
- 21:29a better family member, a sister,
- 21:31you know, now that I'm away from home,
- 21:33I still need to make it a
- 21:35point to keep building on
- 21:36those relationships.
- 21:37And those are the relationships that,
- 21:39you know,
- 21:39continue to support me whether I
- 21:40do CrossFit or not.
- 21:42But I definitely have way
- 21:43more feeling of purpose and drive.
- 21:47And that purpose doesn't come from sport,
- 21:49it comes from the
- 21:50relationships in my life,
- 21:52which is the most meaningful.
- 21:55That is so well said.
- 21:58So then you're in your sport,
- 22:01and like from 2019,
- 22:02it was this drive to get
- 22:04back to the games, right?
- 22:06And last year, that happened, right?
- 22:08Get back to the games.
- 22:10Now the goals shift, probably,
- 22:13I'm assuming,
- 22:14to more games-related goals.
- 22:17Yep.
- 22:18But you've got all this
- 22:18amazing stuff happening
- 22:19around you in life.
- 22:21what are the conversations
- 22:23with Matt now about what are,
- 22:26what are the CrossFit goals
- 22:28and how does it fit into
- 22:30everything you have going on in life?
- 22:32Yeah.
- 22:33So the goal of, you know,
- 22:35it's not just getting back to the games.
- 22:38It's, you know, going into semifinals,
- 22:41like our semifinals and a
- 22:44lot of these semifinals, right.
- 22:45You,
- 22:46The field has been cut.
- 22:47The quality of competition
- 22:49is even harder than last year.
- 22:51Every year it's hard, right?
- 22:53But also every year it gets harder.
- 22:55So it's not that just
- 22:56because you've made it back
- 22:59or you've been more
- 22:59consistent throughout the
- 23:00season or your fitness
- 23:03obviously continues to
- 23:04progress and your holes
- 23:05continue to close doesn't
- 23:07mean that it's going to be
- 23:08that much easier to make it
- 23:10back to the game.
- 23:11So number one goal is to execute and
- 23:15That's something that we've
- 23:16been working on a lot this past,
- 23:18like the entire year is
- 23:20truly closing in on my holes,
- 23:22which mainly is like strength and power.
- 23:24But also when it comes to game time,
- 23:27really honing in on working
- 23:28on our strategy and taking
- 23:31and practicing moments
- 23:32where we have good
- 23:33execution or poor execution, right,
- 23:35in practice.
- 23:37But coming full circle to that question is
- 23:41know the things that we've
- 23:42been working on matt and I
- 23:43is um not just getting to
- 23:46the games but once we get
- 23:48to the games like truly
- 23:50executing our strengths and
- 23:52managing you know the
- 23:53things that we continue to
- 23:55work on and I mean my
- 23:56biggest goal is get to the
- 23:58games and get there for the
- 23:59whole weekend like I work
- 24:01so everyone works so hard
- 24:03that you're just fighting
- 24:04to be there for throughout
- 24:05the weekend and the la my last you know
- 24:08Games, two games appearances,
- 24:10I've always been cut early.
- 24:11So my next goal, you know,
- 24:13something that's manageable, tangible,
- 24:15and I believe my fitness is there.
- 24:17I just need to execute.
- 24:18And I think my execution at the games,
- 24:23I had poor moments of execution.
- 24:25They weren't moments of my
- 24:27fitness couldn't earn me that weekend.
- 24:30It was just couldn't execute.
- 24:32So that I think is what's
- 24:34been holding me back and
- 24:36what held me back last games.
- 24:39So I have to share some of these comments.
- 24:43Rebecca Wood.
- 24:44Oh, my gosh.
- 24:45Hi, Fi.
- 24:45Opened up YouTube and saw you were live.
- 24:48Oh, Rebecca.
- 24:49What a great.
- 24:50She's such a great friend of mine.
- 24:51She's back in Naples.
- 24:54Love you, Rebecca.
- 24:55Wad Zombie.
- 24:56Fi is the most genuinely
- 24:57nice person I've ever seen.
- 24:59Thank you, Wad Zombie.
- 25:00And echoed by Corey.
- 25:02You can feel the positivity
- 25:03coming off of her.
- 25:04And I've told this story on
- 25:05the show before.
- 25:07Thank you.
- 25:08You are such a positive person.
- 25:10I told you, like,
- 25:11you were on the demo team one year.
- 25:12I had imposter syndrome
- 25:15underneath the Coliseum.
- 25:17Do I really belong here?
- 25:19And you came over and gave me a hug,
- 25:20and it was like, oh, my gosh.
- 25:23I do.
- 25:23Like,
- 25:24you just completely set me at ease
- 25:26because you're just a
- 25:27wonderful person and so genuine.
- 25:31And it's always good to see you.
- 25:33Oh, I love seeing you.
- 25:34Oh, my gosh.
- 25:35I didn't realize you had
- 25:36imposter syndrome.
- 25:36Well,
- 25:36you should never have imposter
- 25:38syndrome anywhere you go
- 25:39because you're great at
- 25:40what you do and you bring
- 25:43light out of people.
- 25:44So it's always enjoyable to see you.
- 25:47And it was great.
- 25:48It was one of those years where,
- 25:49you know what, I'm just like, okay,
- 25:51I'm not in it over there,
- 25:53but I could still be in it
- 25:54from this side.
- 25:55And you kind of enjoy the
- 25:57ride that you're on.
- 25:58You got to.
- 25:59Yeah, yeah.
- 26:01So my next question to you,
- 26:03And thank you for those compliments.
- 26:05I do appreciate them very
- 26:06much is you've been working
- 26:09on strength so long.
- 26:11Does it ever feel tedious?
- 26:13Like, because on the other hand,
- 26:16you do have home runs, right?
- 26:18If you can,
- 26:19if you can just get to them in
- 26:20the weekend, like at the games,
- 26:22some of your best events
- 26:23were just around the corner.
- 26:25Yep.
- 26:26I know.
- 26:27You just need the key to
- 26:29unlock the door to get to
- 26:30that next piece.
- 26:32Yeah.
- 26:33And I mean,
- 26:33that's it's part of the game now.
- 26:35It's everyone, everyone,
- 26:38every single athlete in our
- 26:39sport has like their own home runs.
- 26:43And that's, you know, I'm no different.
- 26:45It's just earning that, right?
- 26:47You've got to earn your way.
- 26:48And for some people,
- 26:49it's earning it through the
- 26:51conditioning and the aerobic work that,
- 26:53I mean, this entire sport is aerobic.
- 26:55For me,
- 26:56I'm a very aerobic athlete because
- 26:59I started CrossFit, like, doing, like,
- 27:02true, true CrossFit for a very,
- 27:04very long time.
- 27:05And my biggest holes are the strength.
- 27:07So for me to get to the fun
- 27:09part of the weekend,
- 27:09which is now clearly –
- 27:12after the second or like the
- 27:13second after the second day.
- 27:14Right.
- 27:14It's on Saturday.
- 27:16If you've done the work or, you know,
- 27:18you get to have your fun now.
- 27:20Right.
- 27:20That's when the crossfit
- 27:21starts to come out.
- 27:23And yeah, that's it.
- 27:25Strength has been taking me
- 27:27so like so long to develop
- 27:29because that's just part of, you know,
- 27:31developing strength.
- 27:32It definitely doesn't
- 27:33develop as quick as
- 27:34conditioning or maybe
- 27:36developing like more of the, you know,
- 27:40skills even.
- 27:41For me,
- 27:42strength is something that takes
- 27:43years and years to build.
- 27:44And that's one thing that
- 27:45when I first talked to Matt
- 27:47before even having him as my coach,
- 27:49he was pretty much like,
- 27:50this will take a very long
- 27:52time and we'll get to the
- 27:53end of the year of training
- 27:54and you still won't be
- 27:55where you want to be.
- 27:57Just know that the progress is happening.
- 27:59Even on the days that you're
- 28:01not hitting what in your
- 28:03head you should be hitting
- 28:04or want to be hitting,
- 28:05that doesn't mean you're regressing.
- 28:07It's just part of the process.
- 28:10I just know that when my
- 28:11execution is there and when
- 28:13all the pieces come together,
- 28:16people could see that the
- 28:18strength has been progressing.
- 28:20And a good example of that
- 28:21was last year at Semis.
- 28:24I PR'd my snatch after a
- 28:26couple events already in the weekend,
- 28:28and I hit my 185,
- 28:29something I've never done before.
- 28:32But that was like my ticket to the game.
- 28:33So when things truly come
- 28:35together in my active and
- 28:37it wasn't like it was never there before.
- 28:40It just came together in that moment.
- 28:42And it could have not come
- 28:44together in that moment either.
- 28:45So does that mean that I'm
- 28:46not getting stronger?
- 28:48Absolutely not.
- 28:49So I definitely
- 28:51I've had many moments during
- 28:53competition weekends where
- 28:55when the execution is there,
- 28:57the results aren't there.
- 28:58But when my execution is there,
- 29:00I've proven that things
- 29:01continue to progress.
- 29:03And it's just a long, long process.
- 29:05But I wouldn't be in it this
- 29:07far as long as I have if I
- 29:09didn't love that process.
- 29:12So I talked to Saxon now,
- 29:14it seems like forever ago,
- 29:16probably a week ago.
- 29:18And he described the weekend
- 29:20after the workouts came out
- 29:21as fitness first three days
- 29:24or first three events.
- 29:26Final day is all execution.
- 29:28Yep.
- 29:30Very well said.
- 29:31Yeah.
- 29:31Is that how you see the
- 29:32weekend playing out?
- 29:34Yeah, that's exactly it.
- 29:35I mean, you get the big day one.
- 29:38It's just, where's your conditioning?
- 29:40Where's like,
- 29:41have you been working on your
- 29:42conditioning and your, you know,
- 29:45battery work on that barbell, you know,
- 29:4710 clean and jerks for
- 29:48every round and to get back
- 29:49to that run and just be consistent.
- 29:52um have you been working on
- 29:54those elements in your own
- 29:55training and you know then
- 29:57the next couple days you
- 29:58got uh what's the you got
- 30:00the um what's the second
- 30:03event the front squat front
- 30:04squat toes to bar just kind
- 30:06of your volume work um your
- 30:09endurance the squat
- 30:10endurance that's something
- 30:11that wasn't tested at all
- 30:13in quarterfinals right we
- 30:14saw very specific tests in
- 30:16quarterfinals and the
- 30:17things that you don't see
- 30:18you could have assumed that
- 30:19they were coming and that
- 30:20was like squat endurance and
- 30:22you know, rowing endurance,
- 30:23handstand walking under a long, you know,
- 30:26sort of long aerobic work.
- 30:28And you get all those.
- 30:29And then on the very last day,
- 30:31You get, you know,
- 30:32the events that are all
- 30:35about execution because
- 30:36those events can't have
- 30:38anything to do with anything else.
- 30:40Your best execution will
- 30:42show your best fitness.
- 30:44Whether if someone else is
- 30:45holding on to all, you know,
- 30:4715 ring muscle ups doesn't at the,
- 30:49you know,
- 30:50the last event does not mean
- 30:52that that's going to be
- 30:52your best execution.
- 30:54strategy to showcase your
- 30:55best finish towards the end
- 30:57of the weekend.
- 30:58So yeah, I really love that.
- 31:00And it kind of shows the
- 31:01people that come out at the top at the,
- 31:04you know, at the end of semis,
- 31:06who's been truly not just working on,
- 31:09you know, all those elements,
- 31:10but who's also been honing
- 31:12in on strategy and
- 31:13execution work throughout their training,
- 31:15because all of that stuff takes practice.
- 31:18You can't just practice that on game day.
- 31:21So
- 31:22We'll see how things go.
- 31:23But I mean, it's been so cool to watch,
- 31:25you know,
- 31:26Europe go and now West is about
- 31:28to go and Torian is about to go.
- 31:30So we're learning.
- 31:32I'm learning a lot.
- 31:33I continue to learn a lot by
- 31:34watching everyone go.
- 31:36Do you watch full workouts of the others?
- 31:40Yep.
- 31:40I've been watching all of them.
- 31:42Actually,
- 31:42I didn't get a chance to watch
- 31:44them all live, but I've been going back.
- 31:47I mean, I have my notebook right on.
- 31:49my coffee table right now.
- 31:51My husband and I the other day, we're like,
- 31:52okay,
- 31:53we're going to rewatch everything
- 31:54and we're going to watch, you know,
- 31:56the best, the best heaps do it.
- 31:57But it was really cool to
- 31:59also have moments of like,
- 32:00let's watch some of the
- 32:02individuals that just
- 32:03didn't get it right.
- 32:03And learn a little bit from that.
- 32:05Learn obviously from the
- 32:06people that came up on top and I'm,
- 32:08I'm over there.
- 32:09I'm taking notes.
- 32:10We're going event by event.
- 32:12The other night I could not
- 32:13fall asleep because I think
- 32:14we watched events way too late.
- 32:16And I was just,
- 32:17I dream about these events now.
- 32:19But I watch them all,
- 32:20and I learn from the best.
- 32:22And I have incredible
- 32:24friends in the sport that
- 32:26have already done these
- 32:27events at the last semis,
- 32:29and they're giving me notes.
- 32:30They're giving me takeaways.
- 32:31So I'm taking it all in.
- 32:34So the other thing about the
- 32:37execution being on Sunday
- 32:38is that's when the pressure is there.
- 32:41So not only is it execution,
- 32:42it's execution under pressure.
- 32:45Mm-hmm.
- 32:46which being a veteran of the
- 32:48sport should give you an
- 32:50advantage in that stage.
- 32:56It's so funny how different
- 32:57people react to it.
- 32:59I talked to Sam Quant.
- 33:00He does not watch full workouts.
- 33:02He said all it does is make
- 33:03him more nervous.
- 33:05He'll watch elements to see
- 33:07how people handle things
- 33:09and then he'll shut it off.
- 33:11Oh, yeah.
- 33:12That's different.
- 33:13Is it
- 33:15Is it a disadvantage or an
- 33:16advantage going last?
- 33:18It's a little bit of,
- 33:21it's kind of like a little bit of both.
- 33:23Like it's an advantage when it comes to,
- 33:25um, just gives you more time to prepare.
- 33:29Right.
- 33:31But also everyone,
- 33:32everyone gets more time.
- 33:33Everyone that you're
- 33:34competing against gets more time.
- 33:36So it could be an advantage
- 33:37to someone that needs that time.
- 33:39Right.
- 33:41It could be a disadvantage
- 33:42to some that you kind of
- 33:44just get burnt out and it
- 33:47could be a huge
- 33:48disadvantage to go last
- 33:49because you have a
- 33:51you're just grinding through
- 33:53so many different
- 33:54variations that maybe it's
- 33:56almost too long of a period
- 33:58where you're overthinking,
- 34:00you're burnt out doing the events.
- 34:01So by the time you get to your semis,
- 34:03maybe you've hit all your
- 34:05turbo buttons in training.
- 34:07And as much as you want to
- 34:08have them on game day,
- 34:09if you hit them all way too early,
- 34:12you're just not going to have them.
- 34:14And that's kind of the
- 34:15reality of the sport.
- 34:16And that's why, I mean,
- 34:17just comes to show that's
- 34:18why a lot of athletes burnt out, you know,
- 34:21throughout the year in the offseason,
- 34:22they burn out,
- 34:23they make that decision to step away.
- 34:25Or by the game's time,
- 34:28you see incredible athletes
- 34:30that have a history of
- 34:31incredible performances.
- 34:33And you don't even see them, you know,
- 34:35where they're projected to
- 34:37be not because they can't,
- 34:38it's because they've burnt
- 34:39themselves out way too early,
- 34:42too many times.
- 34:43So
- 34:43kind of a game that you kind
- 34:45of play a little bit of
- 34:46both um and you the only
- 34:48way to really know what's
- 34:50appropriate and what's not
- 34:51is just to be mindful and
- 34:52to talk to your coach and
- 34:53to like when you start to
- 34:55feel um those sensations of
- 34:58almost like not having fun
- 34:59with them that's when you
- 35:01need to start to reel it
- 35:02back and maybe just turn
- 35:03the dv off not watch too
- 35:05many events or just do
- 35:07something completely
- 35:08different other than the events
- 35:11So we're already 35 minutes in.
- 35:13I have not even looked at my notes.
- 35:15And that's what happens
- 35:16every time I talk to you.
- 35:17Oh, my God.
- 35:18I wish workouts went that fast, Scott.
- 35:21Dang.
- 35:22I want that one to just go this fast.
- 35:25Just blink of an eye.
- 35:28So I wasn't sure I was going
- 35:30to make it to Knoxville.
- 35:32I'm still like, ugh.
- 35:35I have a hotel reservation, though,
- 35:37so I'm hoping to get there.
- 35:39And hopefully we'll see you there.
- 35:41Gosh, I hope I see you there.
- 35:42I feel like there's going to
- 35:43be some good stories coming
- 35:44out of that weekend.
- 35:46I do, too,
- 35:47and I want to be there to capture it.
- 35:49If not,
- 35:50I will definitely see you at the games.
- 35:52Yes.
- 35:53Well,
- 35:53thank you so much for taking time out, Fi,
- 35:55as always.
- 35:56And we're not going to let
- 35:57it take a year before you're back on.
- 35:59Yes.
- 36:00No, that's on you.
- 36:01You just invite me.
- 36:02Just shoot me a message.
- 36:03I always get to you.
- 36:03We can still fill an hour
- 36:04without even talking about CrossFit.
- 36:06We really can.
- 36:07And you know what?
- 36:08I love that because I love
- 36:10talking about other things
- 36:12that aren't involved around CrossFit.
- 36:14I didn't even get to you
- 36:16doing quarterfinals live on
- 36:17a YouTube stream.
- 36:18Oh, yeah.
- 36:19You've got to save that for another day.
- 36:22If it's still relevant.
- 36:23That is the coolest thing ever.
- 36:25And did it work for you?
- 36:28on the like the savant like
- 36:31having savan offer that
- 36:33opportunity and crossfit
- 36:34crash you know jr howell
- 36:36out there like bringing us
- 36:38in that was already chaos
- 36:39like quarterfinals is
- 36:40already chaos to begin with
- 36:41right him taking care of
- 36:42his members and the members
- 36:44there that are also kind of
- 36:46trying to punch their
- 36:46ticket to semis um they
- 36:48were just incredible just
- 36:50truly taking us on just
- 36:52like we're family of their
- 36:53own the opportunity was
- 36:54amazing and I loved it because
- 36:56I want to believe that I'm
- 36:58more of a game time athlete.
- 36:59Like when I'm put in game time situations,
- 37:03I just, I turn my brain off and I,
- 37:05I shine more there than in
- 37:07training where I'm just
- 37:08overthinking or if I'm by
- 37:09myself doing these events.
- 37:11And when I get to be in an
- 37:13environment where I just
- 37:14kind of turn it on and just
- 37:16go and put myself in that position,
- 37:18I always, I always do what I need to do.
- 37:22And I loved it.
- 37:23So it was a good kind of
- 37:24like game time practice experience.
- 37:25after, you know,
- 37:26not being on the floor for a while.
- 37:28My hope is that you were the
- 37:29catalyst to move that forward.
- 37:31Cause there's so,
- 37:32so many of us out there and
- 37:33have the ability to broadcast that.
- 37:35And, um,
- 37:37but I've talked to a lot of female
- 37:39athletes who like to keep
- 37:40everything so tight to the
- 37:41vest on those weekends, um,
- 37:44where the guys just,
- 37:45they want to talk smack and,
- 37:47and they don't care.
- 37:48Right.
- 37:49Yeah.
- 37:49And I think it's more like
- 37:50of a confidence thing.
- 37:52I think
- 37:53not confidence, not in a cocky way,
- 37:55but my confidence came from like,
- 37:59I had full confidence that
- 38:00the way that I executed quarterfinals,
- 38:02like, there,
- 38:03there actually weren't a lot
- 38:04of moments that I would
- 38:05have completely changed.
- 38:06I'm like, you know what,
- 38:07that was my best fitness,
- 38:08I would not have done anything.
- 38:10So come and get it and beat it.
- 38:12And if you beat it, gosh,
- 38:14you're really fit too.
- 38:15And if you know, and if it's,
- 38:18if my best fitness doesn't
- 38:20earn me to semis, then
- 38:21At that point,
- 38:22there's not much that I could do, right?
- 38:24So it's that confidence of like,
- 38:27I know what I've been doing in training.
- 38:29I'm confident in my execution.
- 38:31Come and get it.
- 38:32And I think that was just
- 38:33like a cool moment to have
- 38:35because I've never done that before.
- 38:36It worked out.
- 38:39I truly think it's the way
- 38:41to grow the sport.
- 38:42Yes, absolutely.
- 38:43Because it gives a much more
- 38:44intimate look to the
- 38:46athlete and what they go
- 38:47through during those
- 38:48weekends and how hard it is
- 38:51and blind leaderboards and
- 38:53all of those things that we
- 38:54as fans don't always get a peek at.
- 38:57Yeah,
- 38:57and everyone loves the behind the scenes.
- 38:59Everyone loves the inside
- 39:01look because most people...
- 39:03only see the open, I mean,
- 39:05you only see the open announcement,
- 39:07you don't even see the
- 39:07craziness that goes on
- 39:08behind an open announcement,
- 39:10which I would love to see,
- 39:11because I've never been on
- 39:12the open announcements.
- 39:14But then that and then you just see semis,
- 39:17the amazing performances live.
- 39:19And then you see the amazing
- 39:20games performances live,
- 39:22you don't see the
- 39:22background and the chaos.
- 39:25And everyone loves that,
- 39:26because that creates, you know,
- 39:28emotion and story.
- 39:29And CrossFit keeps removing
- 39:31aspects of even the
- 39:32semifinals that are getting broadcast.
- 39:35And so it's going to be up
- 39:37to us third-party media
- 39:38people to add and
- 39:40supplement that with other
- 39:42aspects of the season to
- 39:44make it watchable and to grow the sport.
- 39:46Yeah.
- 39:47I really hope that next year,
- 39:49if I have the opportunity
- 39:50to do quarterfinals live again,
- 39:52It's an easy, it's a great yes.
- 39:54Easy yes for me.
- 39:56Great opportunity, I think.
- 39:57Yeah,
- 39:57I'm going to try to put them together
- 40:00and we'll see what happens.
- 40:01But I know someone will do
- 40:03it again as well.
- 40:04Like it was a success for them.
- 40:06It was great.
- 40:07Yeah.
- 40:08Well, Fi, again, awesome having you on.
- 40:10Thank you, Scott.
- 40:13After you punch your ticket to the games,
- 40:14we'll have some conversations.
- 40:16And then thank you to
- 40:17everybody in the chat for being here.
- 40:19You guys always make this awesome.
- 40:21With that,
- 40:21we'll see everybody next time on
- 40:23the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 40:25Bye, guys.
- 40:29And it's not working.
