- 0:00Speaker 1: When you here know it's actually a yes for something greater.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily A Badi here, you are listening to
- 0:23Speaker 1: the final installment of the.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Turning of the Page series for this year.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Anyway un Hurdle a wellness focused podcast where I talk
- 0:31Speaker 1: to inspirational people about everything from their highest ties and
- 0:34Speaker 1: toughest moments to essential tips on how to live a healthier, happier,
- 0:38Speaker 1: more motivated life.
- 0:40Speaker 2: We all go.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Through our fair share of hurdles. My goal through these
- 0:44Speaker 1: discussions is to empower you to better navigate yours and
- 0:47Speaker 1: move with intention so that you can stride towards your
- 0:50Speaker 1: own big potential and of course have some fun along
- 0:55Speaker 1: the way. So it felt only natural that if I
- 0:58Speaker 1: was going to ask a bud of other stellar women
- 1:01Speaker 1: some of these questions about the year that was in
- 1:04Speaker 1: the next three sixty five, that I should answer them myself.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And so it's a solo today.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'm recapping how I'm doing, really, what my word was
- 1:14Speaker 1: for twenty four, how that played out, what my word
- 1:17Speaker 1: is for twenty twenty five, what I want to stop,
- 1:19Speaker 1: start and keep doing in the new year.
- 1:22Speaker 2: What I'm most proud of from the previous year. So
- 1:26Speaker 2: much good stuff.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I mean, truly, when I think about the last year
- 1:32Speaker 1: of my life, it feels like a movie. I was
- 1:35Speaker 1: able to accomplish things that I dreamed about for so long,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and also do things that I couldn't even dream about
- 1:44Speaker 1: honestly because they weren't even on my radar. That is
- 1:49Speaker 1: truly why I feel so blessed going into the next
- 1:55Speaker 1: twelve months. I'd be remiss if I didn't say before
- 1:59Speaker 1: we get into it today that none of this would
- 2:01Speaker 1: be possible without all of you. Coming off of Hurdle's
- 2:05Speaker 1: seventh birthday celebration, I'm so proud. I never thought that
- 2:10Speaker 1: I would be doing this seven years later when I
- 2:12Speaker 1: started this podcast, and so to not only be still
- 2:16Speaker 1: behind the microphone, but also getting the opportunity regularly to
- 2:20Speaker 1: interact with so many of you, whether it be in
- 2:22Speaker 1: the DMS or in my inbox, and also irl around
- 2:26Speaker 1: the city, around the world. I mean, we had a
- 2:28Speaker 1: Hurdler meetup this year in Tokyo.
- 2:32Speaker 2: That is It's wild to me.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So without a doubt, I extend the biggest thank you,
- 2:39Speaker 1: the biggest thanks to all of you.
- 2:40Speaker 2: For supporting me, for listening regularly.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And for engaging with the show and Uh, yeah, it's
- 2:46Speaker 1: really really special. Make sure you're following along with Hurdle
- 2:50Speaker 1: over on the socials. It's at Hurdle Podcast. I am
- 2:52Speaker 1: over at Emily a body and with that, let's get
- 2:55Speaker 1: to it. Let's get to hurdling.
- 3:08Speaker 2: How am I doing? Really?
- 3:11Speaker 1: It's honestly one of those questions that I love to
- 3:13Speaker 1: ask because it makes someone stop and think for just
- 3:17Speaker 1: a second before going on autopilot with that.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Right, How many times in a day do you tell
- 3:24Speaker 1: someone I'm good and wonder if you actually mean it.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I do mean it when I say that I'm good.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I don't know if I could tell you that in
- 3:33Speaker 1: this moment, I feel great, which is a little funny,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and we'll talk about that soon. And that's because I
- 3:40Speaker 1: feel like I'm lingering in a little bit of uncertainty
- 3:43Speaker 1: right now. I do send so much possibility and excitement
- 3:48Speaker 1: for twenty twenty five, but I am someone who really
- 3:51Speaker 1: likes to know what's happening next, and there's a lot
- 3:55Speaker 1: of things up in the air right now, and so
- 3:56Speaker 1: that gives me a little bit of anxiety. But I know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: oh that I have no reason to believe that it's
- 4:03Speaker 1: not all going to work out. I have no reason
- 4:05Speaker 1: to believe that just because I don't have all of
- 4:08Speaker 1: my answers right now doesn't mean it can't turn out
- 4:10Speaker 1: better than I even thought that it could be. And
- 4:14Speaker 1: so I'm sending in that and I'm good. That's how
- 4:16Speaker 1: I'm doing, really, And I said that being good instead
- 4:21Speaker 1: of being great is a little funny, because great was
- 4:24Speaker 1: my word for twenty twenty four, and oh man, did
- 4:27Speaker 1: it live up to the word. The thought process behind
- 4:31Speaker 1: the word great for me is that my family motto
- 4:34Speaker 1: is do good. And for so many years of my career,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and candidly, maybe over different parts of the last seven
- 4:43Speaker 1: eight years of entrepreneurship personally and professionally, I have been
- 4:48Speaker 1: okay with good. I've been working hard and doing things,
- 4:52Speaker 1: but not necessarily pushing the envelope, if you will. And
- 4:57Speaker 1: I wanted to in twenty twenty four up into great,
- 5:01Speaker 1: to do things that were on the next level, to
- 5:05Speaker 1: make bigger asks, to try things that really really put
- 5:10Speaker 1: me out of my comfort zone. And I can say
- 5:13Speaker 1: without a doubt that I did it. I really did it.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I really stepped into great in twenty twenty four. And
- 5:19Speaker 1: a big part of this there are so many different
- 5:22Speaker 1: events that were so special to me. I'm literally looking
- 5:24Speaker 1: at a list of like twenty six highlights of the year.
- 5:27Speaker 1: From shooting my first ever Birkenstock campaign, my first ever
- 5:30Speaker 1: campaign for anyone, but my first ever Birkenstock campaign, to
- 5:34Speaker 1: going to Orlando for the Marathon Trials, to sitting down
- 5:37Speaker 1: with Joe Bunoit Samuelson What a Goat, to giving a
- 5:40Speaker 1: keynote for Athleta, to traveling to Singapore and running the
- 5:43Speaker 1: Tokyo Marathon, going to Paris four different times, including the Olympics,
- 5:47Speaker 1: running Hut to Coast. I mean, God, like, the list
- 5:50Speaker 1: is endless. I will I will slow down. I'm a
- 5:53Speaker 1: slow mayroll. But so much amazing great things happened in
- 6:01Speaker 1: twenty twenty four. And they were things, like I said earlier,
- 6:05Speaker 1: that I didn't even fathom or dream of, because I
- 6:08Speaker 1: wasn't dreaming that big yet. And so twenty twenty four
- 6:11Speaker 1: taught me to dream bigger, to think bigger, to manifest bigger,
- 6:16Speaker 1: to say things that scare me, to write things down
- 6:18Speaker 1: that scare me, to get not only brutally honest, but
- 6:22Speaker 1: then like a little delusional when I think about the
- 6:25Speaker 1: things that I am after because they might not feel
- 6:28Speaker 1: within my reach right now, but that does not mean
- 6:31Speaker 1: that they are not within my reach eventually.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I think twenty twenty four was the year that I
- 6:37Speaker 1: really really embraced this idea that a no doesn't mean
- 6:43Speaker 1: no forever, and that when you hear no, it's actually
- 6:47Speaker 1: a yes to something greater. I'll say that one more time,
- 6:50Speaker 1: when you hear no, it's actually a yes for something greater.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And so when I think of the word great and
- 6:59Speaker 1: when I think of of twenty twenty four, I gave
- 7:02Speaker 1: you a list of really awesome opportunities, but I would
- 7:05Speaker 1: be remiss if I didn't say that the greatest of
- 7:07Speaker 1: them all was the bed on your self era to
- 7:11Speaker 1: a tee And that was my trip to the Olympics.
- 7:14Speaker 1: In an Instagram post earlier this year, in the summer,
- 7:20Speaker 1: I wrote, three weeks ago, I booked my own trip
- 7:24Speaker 1: to Paris for the Olympics, no tickets, no work, justin
- 7:27Speaker 1: inkling that I needed to put myself there. Four days later,
- 7:30Speaker 1: the planets aligned, and shortly thereafter I landed a job.
- 7:34Speaker 1: The job doing every single thing I journaled and dreamed
- 7:38Speaker 1: and talked about for the past two years, recording hosting,
- 7:43Speaker 1: storytelling gathering a true pinch me moment, one that I
- 7:47Speaker 1: don't take for granted. That was phenomenal. Landing the job
- 7:54Speaker 1: was phenomenal, and the job within itself was amazing. I
- 7:57Speaker 1: landed an opportunity to podcast in a space that Athleta
- 8:00Speaker 1: had put together at the Olympics and was able to
- 8:03Speaker 1: invite women that I admired that were in Paris to
- 8:07Speaker 1: come and sit down with me and talk about their experiences.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And Yeah, I met a loss for words because when
- 8:12Speaker 1: I look back on it, truly it was a dream realized.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It was a dream realized, and it happened because of
- 8:21Speaker 1: that bet on yourself era a moment. It happened because
- 8:23Speaker 1: I said to myself, I'm going to put myself where
- 8:25Speaker 1: I belong, and I worked really hard to get to
- 8:30Speaker 1: a place where I had the capability simply to do that, right,
- 8:35Speaker 1: because betting on myself was like out of pocket hotels,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I used points for my flight, like I didn't know
- 8:44Speaker 1: what was going to happen once I got there. And
- 8:46Speaker 1: if I had to just like buy a bag at
- 8:48Speaker 1: a day and do baguettes and afford the luxuries of that,
- 8:51Speaker 1: I would have, right, But I bet on myself by
- 8:55Speaker 1: putting myself in Paris, and when I got there after
- 8:59Speaker 1: like confros this job, like all of the doors opened.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I was pitching outlets that I had also never written for,
- 9:06Speaker 1: so journalist Emily was coming to the forefront, and I
- 9:08Speaker 1: was writing and interviewing athletes that were putting it all
- 9:12Speaker 1: on the line themselves to go after their big dreams,
- 9:14Speaker 1: and then coming back to the studio space and recording
- 9:17Speaker 1: with someone else that I admired. Like it was, I
- 9:20Speaker 1: felt like my best self for those two weeks in Paris,
- 9:24Speaker 1: and that is the woman that I am right now
- 9:28Speaker 1: and the woman that I will strive to continue to
- 9:32Speaker 1: be and to make myself proud of in the next
- 9:35Speaker 1: twelve months and beyond period. The beutt on Yourself era, Paris,
- 9:40Speaker 1: the Olympics, and so many of the things that happened
- 9:42Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four reminded me of who the hell
- 9:45Speaker 1: I really am, and when I I'm smiling right now
- 9:51Speaker 1: thinking about this because I told you at the beginning
- 9:53Speaker 1: that I'm good. I'm not great, but I say that
- 9:56Speaker 1: and I am reminded of who the hell I am,
- 9:58Speaker 1: right and I I know right now that there is
- 10:03Speaker 1: more of the bet on myself, the bet on your
- 10:05Speaker 1: self era in front of me right now. I just
- 10:10Speaker 1: need to get back to this place where I am
- 10:13Speaker 1: truly living it because you have to be and I
- 10:17Speaker 1: know this to be true, your own biggest hype person.
- 10:21Speaker 1: If you don't believe in yourself, if you don't bet
- 10:23Speaker 1: on yourself, then no one around you is necessarily going
- 10:26Speaker 1: to be the person that does. It starts with you,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and that is something that was so hammered in for
- 10:34Speaker 1: me in twenty twenty four. It starts with me, and
- 10:39Speaker 1: it felt so so good. One of the questions I
- 10:44Speaker 1: asked the woman this week was what was my word
- 10:47Speaker 1: of the year. I told you it was great. But
- 10:49Speaker 1: my word for twenty twenty five is actually attention. And
- 10:54Speaker 1: there are a few words that I get thrown too
- 10:56Speaker 1: the mix here, but I'm going to focus on this
- 10:58Speaker 1: because where your attention goes, your focus grows. And sometimes
- 11:04Speaker 1: it can feel like our focus is specifically on something
- 11:10Speaker 1: that isn't serving us. Maybe it's a relationship or a frustration.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I myself can tell you that I have certainly been
- 11:18Speaker 1: in situationships and my focus was on this one person
- 11:22Speaker 1: and it wasn't serving me. And that can be a
- 11:25Speaker 1: very frustrating place to be. But with that said, we
- 11:30Speaker 1: have the opportunity to shift that focus, although sometimes it
- 11:34Speaker 1: might not feel that way. Just like we get to
- 11:37Speaker 1: react to our thoughts. So my word for twenty twenty
- 11:41Speaker 1: five is attention, because I want to continually remind myself
- 11:46Speaker 1: that I get to put my attention on the things
- 11:49Speaker 1: that serve me and by doing that, by taking control
- 11:54Speaker 1: of that opportunity, good things will happen for me. I
- 11:57Speaker 1: get to pay attention to the people that lift me up,
- 12:01Speaker 1: the people that show up for me in good and
- 12:03Speaker 1: bad times. I get to remind myself day in and
- 12:06Speaker 1: day out that I do not want to simply be
- 12:09Speaker 1: an option. And when I am an option or made
- 12:12Speaker 1: to feel like an option, that's probably not the situation
- 12:15Speaker 1: that I want to walk into. Attention, I get to
- 12:20Speaker 1: choose where my attention goes. In twenty twenty five, where
- 12:26Speaker 1: your attention goes, your focus grows. There are a lot
- 12:30Speaker 1: of things I'm focused on this year. For one, really
- 12:34Speaker 1: giving some energy back to the podcast and putting systems
- 12:38Speaker 1: in place that make this show the best storytelling vehicle
- 12:42Speaker 1: that it can be that For one, two, I've really
- 12:46Speaker 1: loved diving in to hosting this year and to gathering
- 12:52Speaker 1: as well. So two different things that I want to
- 12:54Speaker 1: invest my time in twenty twenty five. More hosting, whether
- 12:59Speaker 1: that be in too very large groups or small curated groups,
- 13:03Speaker 1: moderating storytelling in that way, and then gathering. I feel
- 13:09Speaker 1: like I mentioned like that Tokyo gathering we did the
- 13:13Speaker 1: Berlin gathering. I had the opportunity throughout the year to gather,
- 13:19Speaker 1: specifically gather with women, which is something that makes me
- 13:24Speaker 1: feel very purposeful. I feel like I can be a
- 13:29Speaker 1: conduit for connection. I love to connect people. One of
- 13:34Speaker 1: the most flattering compliments that anyone ever gave me was
- 13:38Speaker 1: telling me that I am a gracious connector, and I
- 13:42Speaker 1: am someone who firmly believes that good people should interact
- 13:47Speaker 1: with good people, and so I will never gate keep
- 13:50Speaker 1: my relationships. I'm just not that person. Circling back to gathering,
- 13:56Speaker 1: That's why it's so important to me, right because if
- 13:58Speaker 1: you can get a bunch of good people in one room,
- 14:01Speaker 1: then great things can happen. And so I am certainly
- 14:06Speaker 1: dialed in to how do I do more gathering in
- 14:08Speaker 1: twenty twenty five and culminate that with the hosting with
- 14:13Speaker 1: the podcast you get where I'm going here? What was
- 14:17Speaker 1: one new thing I learned in twenty twenty four Something
- 14:22Speaker 1: that's really resonant with me from twenty twenty four is
- 14:24Speaker 1: just this idea that nothing changes if nothing changes.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I've been coming back to it a lot lately.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I won't say that necessarily I learned it, but I
- 14:33Speaker 1: will say that I really stepped into it over the
- 14:37Speaker 1: past year. I made a list of folks that I
- 14:40Speaker 1: admire earlier this year, and I realized that all of
- 14:42Speaker 1: them had qualities or were doing things, whether it was
- 14:45Speaker 1: personally or professionally, that I wasn't yet doing, or maybe
- 14:49Speaker 1: a quality that I wanted to amplify within myself. And
- 14:54Speaker 1: there's the person that chooses maybe to be jealous in
- 14:56Speaker 1: a situation like that. And then there's the person that
- 14:59Speaker 1: says that person is doing something right. I admire you,
- 15:04Speaker 1: I'm going to keep up with you. I want to
- 15:07Speaker 1: ask myself, what is it that I can do to
- 15:09Speaker 1: get to where that person is, to maybe exemplify or
- 15:15Speaker 1: learn some of the skills that they have. Right Again,
- 15:21Speaker 1: you can choose to be jealous, or you can choose
- 15:24Speaker 1: to do something about it. There are two different types
- 15:26Speaker 1: of people here, and I am the person that wants
- 15:30Speaker 1: to do something about it.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Nothing changes if nothing changes.
- 15:33Speaker 1: So in my case, I've had the opportunity to sit
- 15:37Speaker 1: down with some of these people that I'm like, wow,
- 15:39Speaker 1: I really admire you, and so cool for me then
- 15:41Speaker 1: to be able to learn from them and then be
- 15:43Speaker 1: able to bring their knowledge to you right here on
- 15:46Speaker 1: the show. That's awesome. That's really awesome. But not everyone
- 15:50Speaker 1: is going to be someone that then comes on the show.
- 15:52Speaker 1: So I in some cases was able to grab some
- 15:57Speaker 1: time with these people. In other cases is I did
- 16:01Speaker 1: some of my own learning on these people right listening
- 16:03Speaker 1: to podcasts that they've been on, following them closely on
- 16:06Speaker 1: social media, and so yeah, I think that's been really
- 16:09Speaker 1: refreshing for me, that idea of ownership over nothing changes,
- 16:13Speaker 1: if nothing changes. Instead of just being like why not me,
- 16:16Speaker 1: that's not what I want, that's not who I want
- 16:18Speaker 1: to be, I want to come back to that through
- 16:21Speaker 1: line that I mentioned earlier, which is I want to
- 16:24Speaker 1: be empowered and determined and I want to keep up
- 16:29Speaker 1: the hard work knowing that I have never ever ever
- 16:33Speaker 1: regretted putting my all into anything, and that I am
- 16:38Speaker 1: and you are too, the most important investment that I
- 16:42Speaker 1: will ever make. I am the most important investment that
- 16:46Speaker 1: I will ever make, and everything I want stems from
- 16:51Speaker 1: that investment of self. And I think that's something else
- 16:56Speaker 1: that I'm really carrying with me right now into twenty
- 16:59Speaker 1: twenty five. I think about how I am the kind
- 17:01Speaker 1: of person that loves turning the page, that loves the
- 17:06Speaker 1: beginning of the new year. That's because it's an opportunity
- 17:09Speaker 1: for me to really embrace the fresh start on my
- 17:12Speaker 1: habits and my routines. I love, understatement, my morning routine
- 17:18Speaker 1: right now, and it is time consuming and can be
- 17:23Speaker 1: a little bit tedious, but it feels so fulfilling to
- 17:29Speaker 1: give back to myself in this way. I am in Washington,
- 17:35Speaker 1: d C. As you're listening to this, and before flying
- 17:38Speaker 1: to DC, I got up at four forty five because
- 17:42Speaker 1: I knew that if I didn't do my morning routine
- 17:45Speaker 1: and the things like the breathwork and the journaling and
- 17:49Speaker 1: the reading and the moving my body, that I wasn't
- 17:52Speaker 1: gonna feel good for the rest of my day. And
- 17:54Speaker 1: I had a nine thirty five flight, and so that's
- 17:58Speaker 1: what it took. I wrote earlier in the day on
- 18:02Speaker 1: Instagram and a note from my notes app that motivation
- 18:06Speaker 1: can wane, right, but what will never go away are
- 18:11Speaker 1: your values. Knowing your why, the opportunity to reach out
- 18:15Speaker 1: for support. Those are things that you can do. You
- 18:19Speaker 1: can take a look at your values. You can talk
- 18:21Speaker 1: to someone about what you're going through when the motivation
- 18:25Speaker 1: isn't there. I think that there's a common misconception that
- 18:28Speaker 1: people that are successful are just extremely motivated. Period. Those
- 18:33Speaker 1: people aren't always motivated. They just have a really strong
- 18:37Speaker 1: foundation for why they do the things that they do.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Some food for thought. So again, the thing that I
- 18:45Speaker 1: learned in twenty twenty four, I'd say that lesson that
- 18:47Speaker 1: I embraced in twenty twenty four, nothing changes.
- 18:51Speaker 2: If nothing changes.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Taking a little break from today's episode to give some

- 20:29Speaker 1: training for me. Strength training changed a lot for me,
- 20:32Speaker 1: not just physically but emotionally. It felt really great to
- 20:36Speaker 1: get back to a place for the first time since
- 20:38Speaker 1: Man twenty seventeen where I'm regularly lifting heavy and using barbells,
- 20:43Speaker 1: and so I want to most definitely keep up the
- 20:46Speaker 1: momentum in twenty twenty five.
- 20:49Speaker 2: When I think of the.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Strength goals that I have for the new year, I
- 20:52Speaker 1: want to get three consecutive pull ups. I want to
- 20:56Speaker 1: press one hundred pounds overhead, which feels very lofty right now.
- 21:00Speaker 1: And I really want to make sure that I'm continually
- 21:03Speaker 1: doing post deior work because running is still something that's
- 21:06Speaker 1: my bread and butter, and I want to do whatever
- 21:08Speaker 1: was in whatever is in my power to prevent injury.
- 21:12Speaker 1: So definitely keep strength training in twenty twenty five, I
- 21:17Speaker 1: want to stop. I want to stop the deadline mentality.
- 21:22Speaker 1: I'm a career journalist. I thrive on a deadline, and
- 21:25Speaker 1: that means, for example, that sometimes my newsletter that comes
- 21:28Speaker 1: out on Friday mornings gets written on Thursdays. And so
- 21:31Speaker 1: one of my goals for twenty five is to be
- 21:33Speaker 1: better about getting ahead. I want to use time blocking,
- 21:36Speaker 1: and maybe I'll use either Notion or my planner for this,
- 21:41Speaker 1: but i want to work ahead so.
- 21:44Speaker 2: That I'm not working up to the why or so regularly.
- 21:47Speaker 1: And when I set a goal like this, I have
- 21:49Speaker 1: to ask myself the why, and the why is that
- 21:52Speaker 1: I don't want to feel anxious like I do regularly
- 21:54Speaker 1: right now in a way that is completely avoidable, and
- 21:57Speaker 1: I want to create better and I know that if
- 22:01Speaker 1: I think ahead, it will empower me to do so
- 22:05Speaker 1: in the long run. And then for my start in
- 22:08Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, I want to start setting an alarm again.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Since the pandemic, I've really been team no Alarm. I
- 22:15Speaker 1: think many of us have, right, and I've loved the
- 22:18Speaker 1: relaxed approach to my morning routine, especially because I make
- 22:22Speaker 1: the rules and I just have a target period of
- 22:25Speaker 1: time that I like to be at my desk, but
- 22:27Speaker 1: it's flexible for the most part, and so when I
- 22:31Speaker 1: get up on the later side, or when I have
- 22:34Speaker 1: done that over the past year or two, sometimes the
- 22:37Speaker 1: things that I like as a part of my routine
- 22:40Speaker 1: fall by the wayside in favor of just running into
- 22:43Speaker 1: movement actually and just figuratively right. So, by setting an alarm,
- 22:49Speaker 1: maybe depending on the day, that alarms at six or
- 22:51Speaker 1: six thirty at the latest, I will have more time
- 22:55Speaker 1: to do the things that make me feel good. And
- 22:58Speaker 1: I have a really strong why for all of those things.
- 23:02Speaker 1: This is coming out on January fourth. I'm only four
- 23:04Speaker 1: days into the new year incorporating all of these fun
- 23:07Speaker 1: things of my morning routine. But it feels good and
- 23:11Speaker 1: I don't want to get rid of it, and I
- 23:12Speaker 1: want to set an alarm. So I'm going to start
- 23:15Speaker 1: setting an alarm again. And those are my stop start
- 23:20Speaker 1: and keep doing in the new year. What was I
- 23:25Speaker 1: proud of In twenty twenty four? I talked about the
- 23:28Speaker 1: bet on Yourself era, but I do want to say
- 23:31Speaker 1: that there are a few tips that I can offer
- 23:33Speaker 1: you if you two want to bet on yourself. The
- 23:37Speaker 1: first thing really comes down to knowing who you are.
- 23:40Speaker 1: And I get dms all the time when I talk
- 23:42Speaker 1: about doing a values assessment and asking yourself what's important
- 23:46Speaker 1: to you?
- 23:47Speaker 2: I don't even know who I am. That's the DM.
- 23:50Speaker 1: You can do a simple activity, which is go to
- 23:52Speaker 1: Google and put in a values list like Google like
- 23:57Speaker 1: what are core values?
- 23:59Speaker 2: And see what comes up, and then.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Write down the buzzwords that resonate with you, like family
- 24:06Speaker 1: or health or movement or finances, whatever those buzzwords are,
- 24:12Speaker 1: and then write on why each of those is important
- 24:14Speaker 1: to you. And it might feel a little silly in
- 24:18Speaker 1: the moment, but you will never regret putting in the
- 24:21Speaker 1: work to get to know yourself better. So if you
- 24:24Speaker 1: want to bet on yourself, it starts by knowing who
- 24:27Speaker 1: you're working with and knowing yourself. The next pillar I
- 24:31Speaker 1: will say is that in order to bet on yourself,
- 24:34Speaker 1: you need to also choose to be a good person
- 24:37Speaker 1: to others. I cannot tell you how important it is
- 24:41Speaker 1: to be a kind human, not just because it's a
- 24:44Speaker 1: good thing, period, but also because it will always, always,
- 24:49Speaker 1: always always come back around. You want to be the
- 24:53Speaker 1: person that is good to other people. You want to
- 24:56Speaker 1: be the person when you're not in the in the
- 24:58Speaker 1: room that people have good things to say about. Period.
- 25:03Speaker 1: I think that so often there is this concern, well,
- 25:08Speaker 1: if I'm a good person, then I'm gonna get walked
- 25:10Speaker 1: all over. That's not it at all. You can be
- 25:12Speaker 1: kind and good, but also firm, and so I believe
- 25:16Speaker 1: that in order to truly step on the bet step
- 25:19Speaker 1: into excuse me, the bet on your self era, you
- 25:22Speaker 1: need to choose to be a good person and be
- 25:26Speaker 1: kind to others. Something else, when it comes to getting
- 25:32Speaker 1: into your own bet on your self era is getting
- 25:34Speaker 1: used to know and knowing that no isn't the end all.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Sometimes it's just a redirection, and like I said earlier, oftentimes,
- 25:44Speaker 1: most always, oftentimes, most always, most always, period a no
- 25:49Speaker 1: is actually a yes to something that's even greater. And
- 25:54Speaker 1: that redirection may make you feel some kind of way
- 25:58Speaker 1: at times, but trust me, and I tell you the
- 26:01Speaker 1: knows are happening for you, so get used to them.
- 26:04Speaker 1: I hear no a lot more than I hear yes.
- 26:08Speaker 1: And sometimes it's easy to look at someone, especially with
- 26:12Speaker 1: the highlights of social media, and think that all they
- 26:15Speaker 1: hear is yes and compare yourself to that. Robin said
- 26:18Speaker 1: something really special in her episode earlier this week, and
- 26:21Speaker 1: she said that so often, when you're shooting for a goal,
- 26:23Speaker 1: you're comparing yourself at square one to someone that is
- 26:26Speaker 1: in a completely different place than you. Her example was
- 26:30Speaker 1: that you're starting to write the first chapter of your
- 26:32Speaker 1: first book and you're comparing yourself to a New York
- 26:34Speaker 1: Times best selling author who's like on their sixth and
- 26:38Speaker 1: it just doesn't work like that. It's totally understandable that
- 26:40Speaker 1: you're in that place of comparison, it's human nature, right,
- 26:44Speaker 1: but that just isn't fair. So get used to know,
- 26:49Speaker 1: understand that no is not a dead end, it's just
- 26:53Speaker 1: a redirection, and allow that to roll off of you.
- 26:56Speaker 1: You can feel your feelings in the no. I want
- 26:58Speaker 1: to make that clear. You are human, feel your feelings.
- 27:03Speaker 1: But then you owe it to yourself to stand up
- 27:07Speaker 1: and ask yourself what's next?
- 27:09Speaker 2: Okay?
- 27:10Speaker 1: And along with that, the last thing I will tell
- 27:13Speaker 1: you in this bet on your self era is be
- 27:14Speaker 1: willing to fail. And that is in quotation marks because
- 27:18Speaker 1: failing isn't failing if you take the opportunity to learn
- 27:23Speaker 1: from the misstep, the side step, the thing that went
- 27:26Speaker 1: wrong right, it's a lesson and every failure is an
- 27:30Speaker 1: opportunity for us to move forward with new information. And
- 27:35Speaker 1: what a privilege that truly is. So again I reiterate
- 27:40Speaker 1: on the things you should do, things you should know
- 27:43Speaker 1: if you want to bet on yourself.
- 27:44Speaker 2: One know who you are.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Two, be a good person to others, Three get used
- 27:49Speaker 1: to know, and four be willing to fail. I said
- 27:55Speaker 1: at the top of this episode that the bet on
- 27:57Speaker 1: your self era also requires a certain bit of delusion,
- 28:02Speaker 1: and if you don't aim high, you won't know what
- 28:05Speaker 1: you're capable of. I'll say that Again, if you don't
- 28:08Speaker 1: aim high, then you won't know what you're capable of.
- 28:12Speaker 1: So shoot right, like, go for the damn thing. You
- 28:16Speaker 1: will never regret betting on yourself, period period. Oh man,
- 28:24Speaker 1: what am I excited about for twenty twenty five. It's
- 28:26Speaker 1: a good question, It's a really good question. I have
- 28:30Speaker 1: some travel that I'm looking forward to this year. It's
- 28:32Speaker 1: not booked yet, but I believe that twenty five is
- 28:35Speaker 1: the year that I finally get to Sydney, Australia.
- 28:38Speaker 2: I've never been to Australia.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I also believe that twenty twenty five is the year
- 28:41Speaker 1: I go to Mexico City, so I will accept all
- 28:44Speaker 1: recommendations on both of these destinations. I also believe that
- 28:49Speaker 1: there is a Ted Talk in my future. I believe
- 28:53Speaker 1: that there's a morning show segment in my future. I
- 28:55Speaker 1: could list my lengthy goals that feel like I am
- 28:59Speaker 1: shooting for the moon right now, and maybe that's one
- 29:02Speaker 1: way for me to manifest it right But I'm going
- 29:04Speaker 1: to keep some of them close to the vest. Can
- 29:07Speaker 1: I tell you that once I met a guy at
- 29:11Speaker 1: the bar at Rios. If you live in New York,
- 29:14Speaker 1: you know, If not, you probably know the pasta sauce.
- 29:16Speaker 1: But there's this highly exclusive restaurant up in East Harlem.
- 29:21Speaker 1: It's called Raos, and my dad was going there for dinner.
- 29:26Speaker 1: He had like a business reservation, and I read that
- 29:30Speaker 1: you could go to Raos and just sit at the bar.
- 29:34Speaker 1: You can't eat that is reserved for the tables, but
- 29:37Speaker 1: you can't go sit at the bar. And so I
- 29:38Speaker 1: went to the bar and I said hi to my
- 29:40Speaker 1: dad and I went into Raos. I had never been
- 29:42Speaker 1: inside before. This is likely in twenty nineteen, I think.
- 29:45Speaker 1: And there was a man who used to be a
- 29:48Speaker 1: bartender at Raos called Nicki the Vest, So whenever I
- 29:51Speaker 1: say this sentence close to the vest, close to the chest,
- 29:55Speaker 1: I think of him. Anyway, I ended up sitting at
- 29:57Speaker 1: the bar with Nicki the Vest, who at the time
- 30:01Speaker 1: was a man like maybe in his late eighties, and
- 30:04Speaker 1: he told me so many stories of his days working
- 30:06Speaker 1: at Rayos. And keep in mind, like this isn't impossible
- 30:09Speaker 1: to get into restaurants, so the people that go there
- 30:12Speaker 1: are super notable, high profile. If you will, what happened
- 30:18Speaker 1: and then I'll you know, skip this sidebar. Is that
- 30:22Speaker 1: someone that worked at Rayos walked up to me, looked
- 30:24Speaker 1: at me and gestured for me to come with him.
- 30:27Speaker 1: I looked at my dad. My dad said go with him,
- 30:30Speaker 1: like he gestured the same thing. The man walks me
- 30:32Speaker 1: to a back room and gives me a small plate
- 30:35Speaker 1: of penny and meatballs. I am in a storage closet
- 30:38Speaker 1: eating Rayos food because they don't let people eat at
- 30:42Speaker 1: the bar, and they didn't want me in that restaurant
- 30:45Speaker 1: without feeding me. That's like one of my favorite, favorite
- 30:49Speaker 1: favorite stories I have of living in New York. Anyway,
- 30:55Speaker 1: Oh man, I'm going off the rails twenty twenty four, y'all.
- 31:00Speaker 1: It's going to be hard to top. I feel so
- 31:03Speaker 1: lucky for what I had the opportunity to do. I
- 31:06Speaker 1: think from an inventory perspective when I think about personally
- 31:11Speaker 1: what I want for myself in twenty twenty five, I'm
- 31:14Speaker 1: really manifesting really great love for myself. I mean that
- 31:20Speaker 1: both by meeting someone but also continuing the journey that
- 31:25Speaker 1: I've been on of self love. The last twelve months
- 31:29Speaker 1: for me tested me in ways that I didn't necessarily anticipate,
- 31:36Speaker 1: and I was able to come out on the other
- 31:39Speaker 1: side having invested in myself. And I'm so proud for
- 31:44Speaker 1: that that I was able to keep up my routine
- 31:47Speaker 1: and ask myself what's best for Emily when the answer
- 31:51Speaker 1: to that wasn't always an easy one to come to
- 31:54Speaker 1: terms with or the most convenient right. And so personally,
- 31:59Speaker 1: I seed love for myself in twenty twenty five and
- 32:06Speaker 1: it feels good. I'm like sitting here smiling, which feels
- 32:09Speaker 1: kind of cheesy. Is that it is that the episode
- 32:13Speaker 1: am I turning the page Attention in twenty twenty five,
- 32:18Speaker 1: Love in twenty twenty five, good things in twenty twenty five,
- 32:22Speaker 1: gathering and hosting in twenty twenty five, more goodness, more greatness,
- 32:28Speaker 1: more everything, more love, more life.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Thank you, Thank you again.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I'd be lost without you, and I cannot wait to
- 32:39Speaker 1: see what happens in the next twelve and reflect on
- 32:44Speaker 1: it again at this time next year. Like I said
- 32:47Speaker 1: at the top, make sure you're following along over at
- 32:49Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast, over at Emily Abadi Another Hurdle conquered.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Catch you guys, next time
- 33:01Speaker 1: You pay in my hair
