- 0:45tier and get everything. Today we are back in the Book of
- 0:49Sufolk tales written down by the Eastman's.
- 0:54We are here for the 11th and 12th nights.
- 0:57On the 11th evening they talk about the feast given to the
- 1:00little ones, the bumblebees, the birds, the bugs, all that.
- 1:05And on the 12th night we learn about Aya, the Devourer.
- 1:09OK, let's begin the 11th evening.
- 1:16You are late tonight my grandchildren, Grumbles the good
- 1:19old wife of Smokey Day as she stands in front of her low
- 1:22doorway, peering under the folds of her dark blanket at the
- 1:25little toiling figures slowly coming nearer and the many
- 1:28twinkling lights across the snow.
- 1:32My mother gave a feast today. Murmurs Tannegela in her soft
- 1:35voice. There were so many people for us
- 1:38to serve, I could not come any sooner.
- 1:40But see, grandmother, I've brought you some boiled rice and
- 1:43venison. She ends proudly bringing out
- 1:46the heavy kettle from under her skin robe as they enter the well
- 1:48smoked lodge. Ah, Exclaims the storyteller,
- 1:54whose old eyes brighten at the sight of the good food.
- 1:58We are going to feast tonight, it seems.
- 2:00Therefore I should tell you of a feast and what came after the
- 2:05festival of the Little People. The big voice of Bumblebee was
- 2:10heard in every nook and corner of the wood and from end to end
- 2:14of the deep valley. For Unctomy the generous was
- 2:16giving a feast, and the bee was his herald, the crier of the
- 2:20day. Ho every creeper, every buzzer,
- 2:25all ye little people who fly without feathers, come to the
- 2:28festival today. Boom, the bee almost prepared to
- 2:30exhibit their best skills. The toad who can neither fly nor
- 2:34run, his brother, the bullfrog with his band of musicians, and
- 2:38even the flying squirrel with the rest.
- 2:41Tanagala the Hummingbird will be the judge of beauty, and the bat
- 2:44will be the judge of your skillful performance in the air.
- 2:48That wise medicine man, the Serpent, will also be there.
- 2:52So Unctomy's herald made the cedar fringe gulches and pine
- 2:55scented hilltops fairly hum with his call.
- 2:59It was July, the Moon of the Black Cherries and the Little
- 3:02People gathered in great numbers in the place of the singing
- 3:04waterfall which had been chosen for the meeting place.
- 3:08The Happy Valley buzzed with millions of voices.
- 3:13Then Unctomy, the Prudent, saw fit to appoint certain warriors
- 3:16to keep order at the festival, for many were present, and
- 3:20therefore a mishap or injustice might occur.
- 3:24The Wolf was ordered to watch the surrounding hills so that no
- 3:26enemy could come near, and the Owl was appointed to keep order
- 3:30within the camp, and especially to see that neither the Bat nor
- 3:34the Nighthawk nor the Swallow tribe were permitted to disturb
- 3:37the little insect people. The day opened well with a
- 3:41chorus of praise from a great orchestra, a sunrise song opened
- 3:46by Tashiaka the Meadowlark, in which even the crickets joined
- 3:50with their slender instruments. Then came the contest of beauty,
- 3:56in which the butterflies and their gauzy dresses of every
- 3:59color won the first prize. The bat, however, who was the
- 4:04judge of feats on the wing, had slightly made a meal of some of
- 4:07the lesser contestants. The owl swooped down upon him to
- 4:11punish him, and there was great confusion.
- 4:15Unk to me could do nothing with his guests.
- 4:18The toad began to devour the smaller creepers, the snake
- 4:21attacked the toad, and even the wolf came down from his station
- 4:24on the hill to make raid upon the helpless little people.
- 4:28Thus began the warfare and praying among these feeble
- 4:30tribes that has lasted to this very day.
- 4:35Smoky Day told the listeners, it is not wise to put the strong in
- 4:39authority over the weak. The END.
- 4:51We are capping out for each other, we are struggling when we
- 5:01band together and we're standing up for the water.
- 5:08OK, and the 12th evening tonight we will hear of a good deed done
- 5:14by UNK to me, begins the old teacher, when all are in their
- 5:16places. In the old days, longer ago than
- 5:21anyone can remember, no one was more feared and dreaded than Aya
- 5:26the Glutton, the devouring spirit that went to and fro upon
- 5:30the earth, able to draw all living creatures into his
- 5:33hideous open maw. His form was monstrous and
- 5:38terrifying. No one seemed to know what he
- 5:40feared or how he might be overcome.
- 5:44Whole tribes of people were swallowed up by him, and there
- 5:46was no help. At last came Unctomy, and by his
- 5:51quick wit and genial ways he got the better of this enemy of our
- 5:54race. AIA is very hard to kill for.
- 5:58He often comes to life again even after he's been left for
- 6:01dead. Perhaps AIA refers to the
- 6:04terrible hunger or the sickness that runs like fire from lodge
- 6:08to lodge and sweeps away whole villages.
- 6:11The little ones leaned in to hear this scary tale.
- 6:16Aya, the Devourer. Once Upon a time, an old woman
- 6:20who was gathering wood found a lost babe deep in the forest and
- 6:24bringing him to the camp, gave him to the chief's pretty
- 6:27daughter. The girl, who was very tender
- 6:29hearted, took the child and cared for him as her own.
- 6:34She fed him often, but he was never satisfied and continually
- 6:38cried for more. When he screamed, his mouth
- 6:43stretched from ear to ear, and far down his red throat she
- 6:48seemed to see a great company of people struggling in confusion.
- 6:52However, she told no one, but patiently tended the strange
- 6:55child and carried him about everywhere with her.
- 6:59In the dead of night, when all the lodge were asleep, the
- 7:02tender hearted maiden was aroused by the crying of her
- 7:05babe. As she bent over him, there
- 7:08seemed to come from his wide open mouth, as if from the
- 7:11depths of the earth, the far off voices of many people in
- 7:14distress. Then at last she went and awoke
- 7:18the chief, her father, and said to him, Father, come and listen
- 7:22to the voice of my babe. He listened for a moment and
- 7:26exclaimed in horror, My child, this is AIA, he who devours all
- 7:31things, even whole villages. What we hear is the crying of
- 7:36the people that he has swallowed.
- 7:38Now he has taken the form of an innocent babe and has come to
- 7:41destroy us. We must sneak away quietly while
- 7:44he sleeps, and travel fast and far before morning in whispers
- 7:50they aroused the sleeping people, and all broke camp
- 7:53without disturbing the child, who once more slept in the
- 7:55chief's teepee, which they left standing.
- 7:59All night they travelled, and when morning came they had come
- 8:02to a wide and Deep River. Here Unktumi, the crafty one,
- 8:07came to meet them, smiling and rubbing his hands.
- 8:11When he had learned what caused the people of the whole village
- 8:13to flee in the night, he kindly offered to help them against
- 8:16their powerful enemy, even though they were terrified.
- 8:20Even then they were unwilling, for they feared that he might
- 8:23play some trick upon them. But Unktumi persisted and
- 8:28retraced their steps to meet the Devourer.
- 8:31He had not gone far before he saw Aya hurrying after the
- 8:34fleeing ones, his ugly mouth gaping widely and his great
- 8:39unwieldy body unsupported by a pair of feeble legs that
- 8:42tottered under its weight. Where are you going?
- 8:46Younger brother asked unk to me pleasantly.
- 8:50How dare you call me? Younger brother angrily returned
- 8:54the other. Don't you know that I was the
- 8:56first one created upon this earth?
- 9:00Well, if that is so, I must be older than you, replied Unk to
- 9:03me in his good-natured way, for I was created upon the face of
- 9:08the water before the dry land itself.
- 9:11I know who you seek younger brother, and have come here to
- 9:14help you. Those foolish ones that you're
- 9:17following are encamped on the river nearby, and I will lead
- 9:20you to them. They cannot escape you.
- 9:23Why not rest a little now, and refresh yourself with the
- 9:25delicacy that I've prepared for you?
- 9:28See, these are human ears, nicely dried for your meal.
- 9:34So saying, Unk to me pointed to a great heap of muscle shells
- 9:37that lay on the hilltop. The greedy monster was deceived,
- 9:41and hastily swallowed the shells, which caused him such
- 9:44distress that he was helpless, and was easily dispatched by the
- 9:47men of the village, who now came out to kill him.
- 9:51No sooner had they cut open his enormous body with their knives
- 9:55than a large company of people issued forth upon the plane and
- 9:58began dancing and singing songs of praise for their deliverance.
- 10:03The end we are capping out for. Each other.
- 10:19We are struggling when we band together and we're standing up
- 10:23for in the water. Well, that first story had a fun
- 10:32way to describe why animals act in different ways and why they
- 10:34don't all get along. And the second story has a
- 10:37monster that actually scares me. The uncontrollable hunger shown
- 10:41by AIA is also in human nature and the current money system
- 10:46that we operate on in the States.
- 10:48Greed is not good, no matter how many times Gordon Gekko says it.
- 10:52I love these stories and I feel so lucky to continue reading
- 10:54them. And the podcast shout out is to
- 10:59that Florida feeling. You want to keep up with the
- 11:02goings on in Florida. Let Jody keep you hip in the
- 11:04wildest state in the nation. You will always hear about the
- 11:07weird, the wild and the sometimes confusing straight
- 11:10from the Sunshine State. And if you like her show as much
- 11:13as I do, go and give her a like a rating and a review.
- 11:19And the listener shout out is to Hamilton, Bermuda, the capital
- 11:23of Bermuda. Its population is under 1000
- 11:25people. The island is named after the
- 11:29man who discovered it, Juan de Bermudez.
- 11:33The capital was Saint George until 1815.
- 11:37The islands had no native people living there until Europeans
- 11:40came through. And most of the city is for the
- 11:43insurance and reinsurance companies who are housed there.
- 11:47There are about 400 companies based there.
- 11:50I wonder how long until they have their own Panama Papers.
- 11:54And so to my listener in Hamilton, I say thank you and
- 11:56good night and pay your taxes.
