- 1:48Speaker 2: Buzz.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I just love that our show is reaching people internationally.
- 1:54Speaker 4: That is one of the fun parts of podcasting too.
- 1:56Speaker 4: There are no geographic boundaries.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Well, buzz, let's get into it.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I want to talk about some notable dates that happened
- 2:04Speaker 1: in the month of January and Nashville music history. You know,
- 2:07Speaker 1: people think at this time winter months that it slows
- 2:11Speaker 1: down here in Nashville for musicians, but that's definitely not
- 2:15Speaker 1: the case. There's always music happening, even in January at
- 2:20Speaker 1: venues like Bluebird Cafe, the Opry and Listening Room.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Nashville never sleeps.
- 2:27Speaker 2: It never sleeps, No, it doesn't. I'm going to start
- 2:30Speaker 2: off with a little bit of a somber.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Fact that happened in January in history January first, nineteen
- 2:37Speaker 1: fifty three. This date was the death of Hank Williams.
- 2:42Speaker 1: He was on the road to a show and unfortunately
- 2:46Speaker 1: he died in the back of his Cadillac at just
- 2:49Speaker 1: twenty nine years old. His death definitely sent shockwaves through Nashville.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And you know, this remains one of the genre's most
- 2:59Speaker 1: signific turning points.
- 3:01Speaker 4: And an iconic figure to this day is Hank Williams.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Absolutely, Yes, yeah, Hank Williams. Hank Williams Junior. We love
- 3:10Speaker 1: their music. Another fact that happened around this decade in
- 3:16Speaker 1: nineteen fifty eight. In nineteen fifty nine, Johnny Cash was
- 3:21Speaker 1: at San Quentin. Now on Year's Day, Johnny Cash performed
- 3:27Speaker 1: his first ever prison shows, and while this did not
- 3:32Speaker 1: occur in Nashville, these concerts did define his Man in
- 3:37Speaker 1: Black persona. It influenced Nashville's Merle Haggard, who was an
- 3:43Speaker 1: inmate in the audience at the time and credited the
- 3:47Speaker 1: show with turning his life towards music. It's so amazing
- 3:52Speaker 1: that Johnny Cash played for Merle Haggard.
- 3:57Speaker 4: If you have not seen the documentary called a tricky Dick,
- 4:01Speaker 4: as in Richard Nixon tricky Dick, Tricky Dick and the
- 4:05Speaker 4: Man in Black. It is a fantastic documentary. Actually not
- 4:10Speaker 4: the name drop, but Jelly Roll actually recommended that. To
- 4:14Speaker 4: believe it or not, I hadn't seen it. I hadn't
- 4:16Speaker 4: seen the documentary, but it's a great Johnny Cash take.
- 4:19Speaker 4: If you haven't seen it.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I haven't off to check it out, Especially if Jelly
- 4:23Speaker 1: Roll recommended it, I'm gonna tak.
- 4:25Speaker 2: His word for it.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So another milestone on this month and music history. Grand
- 4:33Speaker 1: Ole Opry had some of their own milestones on January
- 4:37Speaker 1: twenty first, nineteen eighty nine. This is when Music Valley
- 4:42Speaker 1: Drive came about this opry Land area.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It saw a major expansion.
- 4:48Speaker 1: In the late eighties, including their amusement park, which is
- 4:53Speaker 1: now shut down.
- 4:54Speaker 2: So you won't see that anymore.
- 4:55Speaker 1: But if you go now, you'll see the Opry Mall
- 4:59Speaker 1: oppry Land with the hotel.
- 5:01Speaker 2: But during this month you might not.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Be able to catch a show at the grandele Aupry
- 5:08Speaker 1: because they do this thing in the winter months in
- 5:10Speaker 1: January called Aubrey at the Rymand. This is where they
- 5:15Speaker 1: go back and they move their Aubrey shows to the
- 5:19Speaker 1: Ryman Auditorium. It's historic original home and that's where that
- 5:25Speaker 1: takes place for the winter months.
- 5:27Speaker 4: And if you're heading to Nashville and you're dying to
- 5:30Speaker 4: see a show at the Rymand, don't wait until you
- 5:34Speaker 4: get to Nashville to get your tickets. It's always a
- 5:37Speaker 4: hot ticket at the Rymand, so get them in advance
- 5:40Speaker 4: whichever show you're going to take in.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Absolutely, and I love seeing old pictures of what Aubrey
- 5:48Speaker 1: Lands looked like back in the eighties and nineties when
- 5:51Speaker 1: it had the amusement park and maybe not all of
- 5:54Speaker 1: the buildings built up around it. There's an Instagram page
- 5:58Speaker 1: it's called Nashville muse History or Nashville Music History x
- 6:02Speaker 1: and they always post older photos of Nashville, which is
- 6:06Speaker 1: really fun to see what Broadway looks like back in
- 6:09Speaker 1: the day Demumbrian in Midtown it looked so different, and
- 6:14Speaker 1: you could actually park on Broadway back in.
- 6:16Speaker 4: The day sometimes we learned for yesterday right.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Absolutely a great nostalgic page to look at.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I want to talk.
- 6:26Speaker 1: About some notable births and breakthroughs that happened during the
- 6:32Speaker 1: month of January, So starting with January second, nineteen twenty six,
- 6:39Speaker 1: Harold Bradley, he was born in Nashville. What we call
- 6:44Speaker 1: a unicorn. We don't really see people born and raised
- 6:46Speaker 1: in Nashville anymore. But he became the most recorded guitarist
- 6:51Speaker 1: in history, and he was a member of the A Team.
- 6:55Speaker 1: The A Team was a group of session musicians who
- 7:00Speaker 1: created the Nashville sound. Garth Brooks worked heavily with the
- 7:05Speaker 1: A Team as well.
- 7:06Speaker 4: And I love going through the Country Music Hall of Fame,
- 7:10Speaker 4: just as I know you do, and seeing the way
- 7:12Speaker 4: you know, someone like Harold Bradley is commemorated there. So
- 7:17Speaker 4: generations move forward and they don't forget about these great
- 7:22Speaker 4: legendary players from the past.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Absolutely, such a great place to see some memorabilia and
- 7:29Speaker 1: instruments that these musicians played. Another thing that happened during
- 7:35Speaker 1: this month January nineteenth, nineteen forty six, Dolly Parton had
- 7:41Speaker 1: her Grand Ol Opry guest start, so she didn't become
- 7:46Speaker 1: a member until nineteen sixty nine in the Opry, but
- 7:51Speaker 1: during the forties she was making her mark on the
- 7:54Speaker 1: Nashville music scene, and then in the late sixties during January,
- 8:00Speaker 1: this led to her legendary partnership with Porter Wagner, and
- 8:05Speaker 1: she has such a great album She did with Porter
- 8:08Speaker 1: Wagner as well.
- 8:10Speaker 4: And Dolly to this day keeps creating, keeps building upon
- 8:16Speaker 4: an amazing brand, and keeps doing good in the world.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Oh, it's so amazing. She just yeah, she just keeps
- 8:23Speaker 1: doing it. Whether it's a rock album or doing something
- 8:27Speaker 1: with Cracker Barrel.
- 8:28Speaker 2: You know, she's done it.
- 8:29Speaker 4: That's right, that's right. I love her.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah, me too. So other events that happened.
- 8:35Speaker 1: A couple things happened on the last day of this
- 8:38Speaker 1: month in January thirty first, nineteen seventy. First of all,
- 8:45Speaker 1: this was a weak and country jail, so Tom t
- 8:50Speaker 1: Hall's hit reached number one, proving that Nashville's story song
- 8:55Speaker 1: tradition was a commercial powerhouse.
- 8:59Speaker 2: And I think that stays true to this day.
- 9:02Speaker 4: A week in Country Jail. What a title, right, I know, Yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 4: says it all.
- 9:10Speaker 2: It says it all right there.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And so we talked a lot about what happened in
- 9:15Speaker 1: the past and nineteen forties, nineteen sixties, nineteen seventies, but
- 9:20Speaker 1: more of a recent fact. On this month, January thirty first,
- 9:24Speaker 1: twenty ten. You know, Taylor Swift was really making waves
- 9:28Speaker 1: as a country artist here in Nashville at that time,
- 9:32Speaker 1: and that was the day she had her Grammy sweep.
- 9:35Speaker 1: She was just twenty years old. In Nashville based star
- 9:38Speaker 1: she won four Grammys, including Album of the Year for
- 9:42Speaker 1: her album Fearless. This was signaling signaling a massive shift
- 9:48Speaker 1: in the industry center towards more younger and crossover artists,
- 9:54Speaker 1: especially twenty tens. That's when more younger artist and pop
- 9:59Speaker 1: was making its way into country music.
- 10:02Speaker 4: So, Sarah, as a singer songwriter, what does Taylor Swift
- 10:07Speaker 4: mean to you?
- 10:09Speaker 1: I think a lot of people, regardless of age, but
- 10:14Speaker 1: you know, in general, are just so inspired by Taylor Swift. Obviously,
- 10:19Speaker 1: she's a wonderful songwriter and artist, but I'm just always
- 10:25Speaker 1: inspired by her business moves too. I think she's incredibly
- 10:30Speaker 1: talented and smart, and she knows how to keep people
- 10:33Speaker 1: on her feet with her new releases, always coming up
- 10:38Speaker 1: with new ideas, marketing ideas, and just presenting original and
- 10:44Speaker 1: fresh music all the time.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Are you happy that the Chiefs are not marching to
- 10:51Speaker 4: the Super Bowl or sad?
- 10:53Speaker 3: I am very happy about that because I was very
- 10:57Speaker 3: tired of seeing them in the Super But unfortunately the
- 11:02Speaker 3: Ravens are not a part of the playoffs this year.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I'm sorry to darken the conversation. I know you're a
- 11:08Speaker 4: fan of the Ravens, so I apologize in advance.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I am. Yeah, Well, you know, at least the Ravens
- 11:15Speaker 1: have done better than the Titans here in Tennessee.
- 11:19Speaker 4: There you go, exactly.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Well, those are my dates for Nashville music history, a
- 11:26Speaker 1: little bit of insight on what occurred here in the
- 11:30Speaker 1: month of January in Nashville. But buzz people can look
- 11:35Speaker 1: forward to the guest I'm going to have upcoming in
- 11:40Speaker 1: the new year for taking a walk Nashville. So for February.
- 11:45Speaker 1: On February twelfth, I've got Tony Mantur. He is a producer,
- 11:51Speaker 1: musician and podcast host. You may have heard of his
- 11:54Speaker 1: podcast Why Not Me and also podcast Almost Live, another
- 12:01Speaker 1: music podcast. So that's a wonderful conversation. On February twenty
- 12:06Speaker 1: six I have another wonderful guest, Mary go Shay. She
- 12:11Speaker 1: is a hit songwriter in Nashville. So these are just
- 12:14Speaker 1: some excellent conversations I had recently, and I can't wait
- 12:18Speaker 1: for everyone to tune in and hear it.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I can't wait to hear both of them. Mary
- 12:24Speaker 4: was on the Music Save Me podcast with Lynn Hoffman
- 12:28Speaker 4: and Mary's done incredible work in the veterans community in
- 12:32Speaker 4: terms of health and well being issues, in terms of
- 12:35Speaker 4: how songwriting and music is so important there. So can't
- 12:39Speaker 4: wait to hear both of those, including Mary, who is
- 12:42Speaker 4: quite a character.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Absolutely people can look forward to that.
- 12:46Speaker 1: More episodes coming up this month as well, one with
- 12:50Speaker 1: Porter's Call and I'm doing a show with them on
- 12:55Speaker 1: January twenty at a Prospect House. People can get their
- 12:59Speaker 1: tickets on line, but tickets benefiting such a wonderful cause.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Porter's Call helps.
- 13:05Speaker 1: People artists and musicians and needs, so everyone can check
- 13:10Speaker 1: out my social medias for more information on them and tickets.
- 13:14Speaker 2: To that event.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Awesome, that's so great, Thanks for doing that.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Yeah, well, thanks buzz for being on today and I'm
- 13:21Speaker 1: looking forward to what we have going on here next.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Thanks for everything, Sarah, and it's great to be with
- 13:27Speaker 4: you on Taking a Walk Nashville.
