- 0:14Speaker 1: yard practice shots. It's a great place to chip and
- 0:16Speaker 1: putt and practice. If you don't have time for a
- 0:19Speaker 1: full round, book your tea time today. Golf dot Brek
- 0:23Speaker 1: dot org. Golf dot Brek dot org. We found it,
- 0:28Speaker 1: you the Allelujah chorus. We found the lone person. There's one.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We found him. We found the one human being alive,
- 0:37Speaker 1: the one brave soul willing to stand up and say,
- 0:40Speaker 1: you know what, Mickey Loomis and the Saints not that bad.
- 0:46Speaker 1: We found him. I can't believe it. I didn't think
- 0:50Speaker 1: the soul. I didn't think a person existed that could
- 0:53Speaker 1: have looked at what's going on with the New Orleans
- 0:54Speaker 1: Saints right now and said, you know what, it ain't
- 0:57Speaker 1: that bad. It's not all that you say it is.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I hear that bald, angry face yelling guy down in Louisiana.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I see his tiktoks and whatnot. His YouTube shorts talking
- 1:10Speaker 1: about gum smacking, gms, driving cars into ditches and whatnot.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Seeing that he's wrong, it's not so bad in New Orleans.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That would be the person of Mike Floria Pro Football Talk,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and Florido's a respected voice, no doubt. I'm not saying
- 1:29Speaker 1: he's right on everything. I don't think he's right on everything,
- 1:31Speaker 1: but he's got a big voice, and he's connected in
- 1:33Speaker 1: the NFL. And Florio's got a piece up at Pro
- 1:35Speaker 1: Football Talk where he says, despite short term Challe challenges Saint,
- 1:40Speaker 1: sorry solid long term destination for a new coach, ho
- 1:43Speaker 1: stop traffic record scratch. I wish we had sound effects like,
- 1:50Speaker 1: oh that would be really good. Oh well, I need
- 1:53Speaker 1: a little thing reckon, so very quickly, I'll go through
- 2:03Speaker 1: the point that he makes. He writes the lingering vacancy,
- 2:07Speaker 1: which by all appearances is being held for Eagles coordinator
- 2:10Speaker 1: Kellen Morris, prompted some to argue the Saint's job is
- 2:12Speaker 1: the least appealing from the current cycle. It's not, he writes, says, Yes,
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Saints have cap issues. Mickey Loomison his Staffhile has
- 2:22Speaker 1: find a way to solve them. As for the quarterback,
- 2:24Speaker 1: situation that if they keep Derek Carr, they'll deal with
- 2:27Speaker 1: thirty million in salary. If they move on, they'll have
- 2:30Speaker 1: a clean slate and thirty million extra in cash and
- 2:33Speaker 1: cap space. He notes the Jets have been dysfunctional under
- 2:36Speaker 1: Woody Johnson for fourteen years in a playoff drought. The
- 2:40Speaker 1: Jags have been one of the worst teams in the
- 2:41Speaker 1: league's and Shot con bought the franchise more than a
- 2:43Speaker 1: decade ago. The Raiders have two foundational pieces, Max Crosby
- 2:47Speaker 1: and Brock Bowers, but not much else. He says in
- 2:49Speaker 1: the Cowboys are well the Cowboys, So what do the
- 2:53Speaker 1: Saints have? An owner whose patient doesn't meddle, a GM
- 2:56Speaker 1: who's built teams that consistently contend, and when they topped
- 3:00Speaker 1: off the rest of the roster with a great coach
- 3:01Speaker 1: and a quarterback, says, the fan base is zealously supportive.
- 3:04Speaker 1: The division isn't chock full of Juggernauts. Despite the glass
- 3:08Speaker 1: half full vibe that every franchise with a new coach
- 3:10Speaker 1: tries to create, It's impossible for the NFL to have
- 3:13Speaker 1: thirty two good teams, and bad teams tend to stay bad.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Over the past eighteen years, the Saints have not been
- 3:20Speaker 1: one of them. And he's right, and it is nice
- 3:23Speaker 1: to hear an opposing point of view just to make you,
- 3:25Speaker 1: if nothing else, stop, pause and consider, because I do
- 3:28Speaker 1: often say the fan and media echo chamber around sports
- 3:33Speaker 1: is something that I try very hard to avoid. It's
- 3:36Speaker 1: not that I am contraryan for the sake of being contrary,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and that's what muse does. It is to say that
- 3:41Speaker 1: I do like to say, if everyone is zigging, should
- 3:44Speaker 1: we consider zagging? Like group think is a very real
- 3:48Speaker 1: thing around sports, where people hear a point of view
- 3:51Speaker 1: and just continue to repeat it. That happens on Twitter
- 3:53Speaker 1: all day. It happens on Facebook or message boards, or
- 3:56Speaker 1: talk radio or talking head shows or everything. It's very common.
- 4:01Speaker 1: So it is interesting to at least stop and consider
- 4:04Speaker 1: an opposing point of view. But I would argue to
- 4:07Speaker 1: the contrary what Florio is saying there, like, yes, the
- 4:12Speaker 1: Saints always work through their cap issues, and they do
- 4:15Speaker 1: and they will. They'll restructure deals and they'll make it
- 4:17Speaker 1: work because they have to. But the problem is when
- 4:19Speaker 1: you do that, then you're not able. You're not in
- 4:23Speaker 1: a healthy enough cap situation to be able to retain
- 4:25Speaker 1: players you want. That's why you look and you go,
- 4:27Speaker 1: why were there two NFL Defensive Player of the Year
- 4:31Speaker 1: finalists that the New Orleans Saints drafted that were NFL
- 4:35Speaker 1: Defensive Player of the Year finalists for other teams while
- 4:37Speaker 1: you were one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
- 4:39Speaker 1: That's a dysfunctional organization. That's not a good organization. Yes,
- 4:43Speaker 1: they'll make the money work, but it's your inability to
- 4:48Speaker 1: function sensibly within the cap that put you in those
- 4:53Speaker 1: positions where you're not able to retain players you want.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And I would also argue that over the course of
- 4:57Speaker 1: the New Orleans Saints history for nearly sixty years, the outlier,
- 5:04Speaker 1: the little sliver of Sean Payton Drew Brees, which we
- 5:08Speaker 1: lived for fifteen years and was amazing. That's the exception.
- 5:12Speaker 1: The other forty five years of being a dysfunctional mess
- 5:16Speaker 1: is the Saints true reality. That's what the organization is
- 5:20Speaker 1: and has been throughout its history. So yes, no doubt,
- 5:28Speaker 1: as Florio points out there, that the Saints have been
- 5:37Speaker 1: a consistent contender over the last two decades, and when
- 5:40Speaker 1: topped off with a great coach and a great quarterback,
- 5:43Speaker 1: I would argue the great coaching quarterback is why you
- 5:46Speaker 1: are a contender. And without that great coaching quarterback, you've
- 5:50Speaker 1: been nothing close to being a contender. So yes, the
- 5:55Speaker 1: coaching quarterback matters. Ask New England. The greatest dynasty the
- 5:59Speaker 1: NFL has ever seen. Brady and Belichick are gone. They stink.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Look at Indianapolis. Peyton Manning has a great run there.
- 6:11Speaker 1: The year he's injured, they stink. They got the first
- 6:14Speaker 1: pick in the draft, they got Andrew Luck, they got
- 6:16Speaker 1: a good quarterback, and they were consistent. Luck's gone. They
- 6:18Speaker 1: haven't been good since. Look at the forty nine ers, man,
- 6:23Speaker 1: they had a great two decade run with Joe Montana
- 6:28Speaker 1: and into Steve Young, and then they had a time
- 6:33Speaker 1: there with Jeff Garcia. But from two thousand and three
- 6:35Speaker 1: to twenty ten they went eight consecutive years, eight non
- 6:39Speaker 1: winning seasons, eight consecutive Why well, you had Mike Nolan
- 6:47Speaker 1: and Mike Singletary and Jim tom Sula. And you know
- 6:51Speaker 1: when they got good when they hired Jim Harbaugh. I
- 6:55Speaker 1: mean it ain't hard to figure out. So yeah, to
- 7:00Speaker 1: have the coach in the quarterback. But good organizations don't
- 7:04Speaker 1: miss there, or when they do, they're able to pivot
- 7:08Speaker 1: and replace it. The Saints aren't that, and it is
- 7:14Speaker 1: a bad job. It's why candidates you wanted to talk
- 7:18Speaker 1: to didn't want to talk to you. It's why you
- 7:22Speaker 1: didn't get a conversation with Ben Johnson. It's why Joe
- 7:25Speaker 1: Brady's staying in Buffalo. It's why Cliff Kingsbury staying in DC.
- 7:28Speaker 1: You don't think any of those guys. You don't think
- 7:31Speaker 1: if the Chicago Bears came calling on Joe Brady and
- 7:34Speaker 1: they identified him as their top target, you think Joe
- 7:37Speaker 1: Brady's staying in Buffalo with a chance to go to
- 7:40Speaker 1: Chicago with Caleb Williams, franchise quarterback, a young, talented offensive roster,
- 7:49Speaker 1: high draft picks, cap space, you can tell me like
- 7:51Speaker 1: he wouldn't have taken that job. It's a hypothetical onder,
- 7:55Speaker 1: know for sure. But of course you want to be
- 7:58Speaker 1: set up for success, and you're they're not set up
- 8:00Speaker 1: for immediate success, which prolongs the misery. And that's where
- 8:04Speaker 1: you are. So I mean go back to the to
- 8:07Speaker 1: the lead here, which is despite short term challenges the
- 8:14Speaker 1: Saints or a solid long term destination for a new coach.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I don't agree with that. I think what we've seen
- 8:21Speaker 1: from the Saints long term is that they're not a
- 8:23Speaker 1: good organization, and the short term challenges only be get
- 8:27Speaker 1: more challenges. The Saints are far more reminiscent of the
- 8:31Speaker 1: New York Jets historically than they are the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 8:35Speaker 1: The last two decades, the Saints look a lot more
- 8:37Speaker 1: like the Steelers, but that's not their history because they're
- 8:41Speaker 1: not a good organization and I love them. This isn't like,
- 8:46Speaker 1: you know when people talk about your crazy uncle. It's
- 8:48Speaker 1: like you can talk about your crazy uncle, but somebody
- 8:50Speaker 1: else talks about you crazy ol. But hey, man, it's
- 8:51Speaker 1: my uncle. You want to fight like. I love the Saints.
- 8:54Speaker 1: They're my crazy uncle, and I can say it about
- 8:57Speaker 1: him as his family. But they're a dysfunction mess and
- 9:00Speaker 1: have been throughout all their history except for the shining
- 9:05Speaker 1: sliver of breezing Payton, and once they're gone, this is
- 9:09Speaker 1: the Saint's reality. So no, I don't trust Mickey Limbis
- 9:13Speaker 1: to get this higher right. No, I don't think they're
- 9:15Speaker 1: going to do the right thing and cut Derek Carr
- 9:19Speaker 1: and swallow it this year and stink and get a
- 9:21Speaker 1: top five pick and try to get your franchise next year,
- 9:24Speaker 1: because that's what a good organization would do, and the
- 9:27Speaker 1: Saints aren't a good organization. So they're going to keep
- 9:29Speaker 1: making bad decisions with who they hire, with how they
- 9:33Speaker 1: approach this offseason, with how they approach the cap, with
- 9:36Speaker 1: how they approach the draft. They're going to continue trading
- 9:39Speaker 1: up for players instead of trading back and acquiring more assets.
- 9:42Speaker 1: They're going to continue to push forward with bad contracts
- 9:45Speaker 1: to try to win now when they're no closer to
- 9:46Speaker 1: winning now than they were yesterday. I hope, I hope
- 9:52Speaker 1: he's right, and it is interesting at least to consider
- 9:55Speaker 1: a conflicting point of view. I I just think this
- 10:01Speaker 1: is one of those instances where the one person giving
- 10:05Speaker 1: the counterpoint is zagging when everyone else is zigging, and
- 10:10Speaker 1: he's doing so just to be different. And I think
- 10:13Speaker 1: that's probably what's going to keep this Saints organization going
- 10:16Speaker 1: down the wrong path. We'll see when they make a hire.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Should be getting close, as announcements have come that the
- 10:22Speaker 1: Saints are done interviewing. There's no more candidates interview, so
- 10:25Speaker 1: they're down to what really amounts to your final three.
- 10:29Speaker 1: It's going to be Kellen Moore. Mike Kafka or Darren
- 10:32Speaker 1: Rizzy with all signs the longer this is prolonged that
- 10:34Speaker 1: it's going to be Kellen Moore, because if they wanted
- 10:38Speaker 1: to hire Kafkar or Rizzy, they could have already done.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I mean the second they finished the interview with Kellen Moore.
- 10:42Speaker 1: If they were done with him, they could have hired
- 10:44Speaker 1: someone else. So chances are it's going to be Kellen Moore.
- 10:46Speaker 1: They can't make that official until after the Super Bowl,
- 10:48Speaker 1: but we'll continue to wait and see how it all
- 10:50Speaker 1: plays out.
