Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Chris Mackenzie: Ferry Holdings Chair on the new Cook Strait ferry plans
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Fairy announcement bit light on detail about the land side
- 0:03Speaker 1: construction costs. That's the part that blew out acourse some
- 0:06Speaker 1: of the original Irex project, not the cost of the
- 0:08Speaker 1: vessels themselves. Winston Peters reckons overall we'll save two point
- 0:12Speaker 1: three billion bucks or thereabouts. Chris McKenzie is chair of
- 0:15Speaker 1: Ferry Holdings Limited with me this morning, Chris, good morning,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Good morning. So do we have any where have those
- 0:21Speaker 1: estimates come from for the infrastruy, you know, the land
- 0:24Speaker 1: side infrastructure.
- 0:26Speaker 2: We have done a considerable amount of work with both
- 0:29Speaker 2: Picton and Wellington. We have identified as as probably you've
- 0:34Speaker 2: seen the chart NOE out of the drawing to the
- 0:37Speaker 2: two ports. We have determined the cost of the wharf
- 0:42Speaker 2: that's being demolished and then replaced in Picton, so we
- 0:47Speaker 2: have a rough costing of that. We have a rough
- 0:50Speaker 2: costing now of the other what's called the nesting structure
- 0:55Speaker 2: where the fairies reverse into and were going out shortly
- 1:02Speaker 2: Again with the rough costing on the link spans both
- 1:06Speaker 2: in Wellington and Picton, and just as an aside, that's
- 1:09Speaker 2: one of the ways in which we are making some savings.
- 1:12Speaker 2: We're now going to have linked spans in Wellington and Picton,
- 1:15Speaker 2: which are essentially the same, whereas previously under IREX. There's
- 1:20Speaker 2: a link span being built for Picton and there's a
- 1:22Speaker 2: link span being built for Wellington. So we are saving
- 1:26Speaker 2: some money by getting identical link spans in both Victim
- 1:30Speaker 2: and Wellington.
- 1:31Speaker 1: It's all a but boo tricky. But the cost of them.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I mean you're saying rough costs, and people at home
- 1:36Speaker 1: will be going, oh, well, I've heard this before, because
- 1:39Speaker 1: remember how much this project was meant to cost to
- 1:41Speaker 1: begin with, and then what it was going to end
- 1:42Speaker 1: up costing, and most of that was landside. Of eighty
- 1:45Speaker 1: percent of it was chewed up by landside. So how
- 1:48Speaker 1: you know how confident are we look?
- 1:51Speaker 2: I think I am more confident than we were with IREX.
- 1:56Speaker 2: And the reason I can say that is we have
- 1:58Speaker 2: identified exit exactly what is the work we are doing
- 2:02Speaker 2: in both Wellington and Pickton. The ports have agreed with
- 2:05Speaker 2: that work. And therefore one of IREX's issues was we're
- 2:12Speaker 2: going to put a temporary wolf here. Oh, we'll need
- 2:14Speaker 2: to do this in roading and we'll have to shift
- 2:17Speaker 2: the rail yard here and there and so forth in
- 2:20Speaker 2: this project because we're using a maximum reuse. We don't
- 2:25Speaker 2: have to shift railway yards, we don't have to shift roading.
- 2:29Speaker 2: All we are doing is building the structure for the
- 2:32Speaker 2: wharves that the vessels will come in the existing rail
- 2:36Speaker 2: yards and Pickton and Wellington will need to be just
- 2:40Speaker 2: tweaked where they connect with the new vessels, and apart
- 2:43Speaker 2: from that, we're not diverging from that at all. So
- 2:47Speaker 2: we have a set engineering project in both Wellington and
- 2:53Speaker 2: Picton and as a board we are not going to
- 2:56Speaker 2: deviate from that. Yes, there'll be people who say, oh,
- 3:00Speaker 2: if we put this over here, we could do such
- 3:02Speaker 2: and such. We are not going down that track. We
- 3:05Speaker 2: are going exactly as the plans that were in that
- 3:08Speaker 2: release yesterday and nothing else.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Chris appreciate it and hopefully we will see this thing
- 3:14Speaker 1: getting off the ground soon. The Faery's not coming till
- 3:16Speaker 1: twenty twenty nine. Chris McKenzie, Chair of Ferry Holdings Limited.
