- 0:00Speaker 1: Happy Halloweek everyone. I'm Haley and I'm Adria and this
- 0:04Speaker 1: is Inhuman, a true crime podcast. So today we are
- 0:10Speaker 1: queuing up all the spooky vibes since it is almost Halloween.
- 0:14Speaker 1: In today's episode, we are going to be talking about
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Wayley House, aka the Travel Channel's most Haunted House
- 0:22Speaker 1: in America.
- 0:24Speaker 2: I'm so excited.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I was really excited to dive into this story because
- 0:28Speaker 1: I really don't look into ghost stories that often. Yeah, like,
- 0:32Speaker 1: I never actually really got into them until I started
- 0:34Speaker 1: listening to And That's Why We Drink, Which if you
- 0:37Speaker 1: guys haven't listened to that podcast, I highly recommend it.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Each week the one host covers a ghost or like
- 0:44Speaker 1: spooky story and then the other one covers a true
- 0:47Speaker 1: crime story, and I love it. And that's what got
- 0:51Speaker 1: me into spooky stories, like listening to them, but I
- 0:54Speaker 1: don't really like look into them myself, So this was
- 0:56Speaker 1: super fun for me to dig into. I know Andrea
- 0:59Speaker 1: loves all the ghost witchy, spooky vibes.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Yes, I'm all about that. I like, but I like
- 1:07Speaker 3: stuff that's like substantial. I don't want some po dunk
- 1:11Speaker 3: made up, you know, unbelievable story about some you know,
- 1:15Speaker 3: zombie or something like give me the good stuff I want,
- 1:18Speaker 3: like the hauntings and the witches and right.
- 1:22Speaker 2: All that good stuff.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I feel like you have so many good ghost stories too.
- 1:25Speaker 1: We need to like do an episode of just like
- 1:28Speaker 1: our personal Maybe we could do like a listener's episode
- 1:30Speaker 1: at some point and do like our ghost stories. Plus
- 1:33Speaker 1: if like any of our listeners have stories.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yeah, that would be super cool. On that note, good, Yeah,
- 1:41Speaker 3: that was a really good segue. So we had been asking, well,
- 1:45Speaker 3: we had been suggesting for you guys if you have
- 1:47Speaker 3: case suggestions.
- 1:49Speaker 4: To email us.
- 1:51Speaker 3: And I know that we do like occasionally give out
- 1:55Speaker 3: our email address on the episodes, but we now act
- 2:00Speaker 3: actually have it linked in our link tree. So it's
- 2:03Speaker 3: not one of the boxes, but it's at the very
- 2:05Speaker 3: top before the boxes begin, and it's literally just like
- 2:08Speaker 3: a little envelope and you can click it and it
- 2:10Speaker 3: just boop pops up and the email address is already there,
- 2:14Speaker 3: and all you guys have to do is put case
- 2:17Speaker 3: suggestions or now you can put listener tails. I guess
- 2:21Speaker 3: that's what we'll call it. Yeah, whenever, we might come
- 2:24Speaker 3: up with a better name, because I think Morbid uses that.
- 2:26Speaker 3: But I like it nonetheless, but whatever you guys want
- 2:31Speaker 3: to put into in the subject line, but that's just
- 2:33Speaker 3: the easier way for you.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Guys to email us.
- 2:35Speaker 3: So and the link tree is in our bio of
- 2:39Speaker 3: our Instagram, which is in Human Underscore podcast.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Yep, yep, that's.
- 2:44Speaker 1: All Andrea figured out how to set that up, and
- 2:48Speaker 1: that is very helpful. So thank you, Andrea, You're very welcome.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I'm tech savvy.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Look at me.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Well, I was going to say when you were describing
- 2:56Speaker 1: the icon that's at the top, I was about to
- 2:58Speaker 1: say the email signal, and then you said envelope and.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I was like, oh, yeah, it is a it is
- 3:03Speaker 2: just like, oh my god.
- 3:04Speaker 4: But it's also the email em are so old too.
- 3:07Speaker 3: So yeah, but whatever whatever generation you happen to uh
- 3:12Speaker 3: relate too, that's what it is.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, oh my god, that's scared. That scared me too.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I almost peede a little luction pregnancy thing. Yeah exactly.
- 3:28Speaker 1: No, our mailman just walked up, so my dog went crazy.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But anyway, one other really quick thing before we get
- 3:34Speaker 1: into today's story, I wanted to let you guys know
- 3:37Speaker 1: that we will be releasing a bonus spooky episode on Saturday,
- 3:41Speaker 1: October thirtieth, to give you all the spooky vibes as
- 3:45Speaker 1: we experience. Hello Weekend twenty twenty one. So Andrew is
- 3:50Speaker 1: going to be covering a very spooky case and I
- 3:53Speaker 1: am so excited because I don't think I've ever actually
- 3:55Speaker 1: heard the story, so stay tuned. We were not going
- 3:59Speaker 1: to tell you what it is yet, but it's going
- 4:01Speaker 1: to be really good.
- 4:02Speaker 4: It is. I started doing my research today just a
- 4:04Speaker 4: little bit and I was.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Like, whoa ah, I'm so excited.
- 4:09Speaker 1: So yeah, that will be releasing at our normal time,
- 4:12Speaker 1: which is eight am Eastern, five am Pacific on Saturday morning.
- 4:16Speaker 1: We asked on Instagram if you'd rather have a bonus
- 4:18Speaker 1: on Saturday or on like actual Halloween, and most people
- 4:22Speaker 1: voted for Saturday, so that's what we're going with. Yep,
- 4:25Speaker 1: you can listen to it while you prepare all your
- 4:27Speaker 1: spooky snacks for your Halloween parties.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 4:30Speaker 1: So we are going to be covering the Whaley House today,
- 4:34Speaker 1: And first of all, I just want to say I
- 4:36Speaker 1: really like this this one because it is spelled like
- 4:40Speaker 1: my name with a W in front of it. So
- 4:43Speaker 1: if you didn't know I'm Haley me, this is my
- 4:47Speaker 1: voice and my name is spelled the most basic spelling
- 4:52Speaker 1: of Haley just hluy, and Waley House is whaluy. So
- 4:57Speaker 1: it's like my name with a W in front of it,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and I just thought that was kind of cool, so
- 5:01Speaker 1: I wanted to share that, yeah, this is meant.
- 5:04Speaker 2: To be Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 1: So and this actually was suggested by somebody. I have
- 5:08Speaker 1: no clue where. If it was on Instagram, on my
- 5:11Speaker 1: personal Instagram, I cannot remember, but somebody suggested this, So
- 5:15Speaker 1: thank you. I'm sorry that I don't know your name.
- 5:18Speaker 1: We will try to whenever we cover a case that
- 5:20Speaker 1: someone suggests, will try to shout you out.
- 5:22Speaker 2: And I'm so sorry.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And if you remind me that you are the one,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I will give you a shout out in the next
- 5:27Speaker 1: episode because I feel bad, Yes, but thank you because
- 5:31Speaker 1: I was this was perfect to look into this week.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So the Whaley House is in San Diego, California, which
- 5:36Speaker 1: I know we have a lot of international listeners, so
- 5:38Speaker 1: if you don't know, San Diego is in southern California.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I was actually there this past weekend and I kind
- 5:45Speaker 1: of wanted to go visit the Whaley House, but also
- 5:47Speaker 1: I'm too terrified and I don't think Rob would go,
- 5:49Speaker 1: so you know, I didn't even bring it up. But
- 5:52Speaker 1: as I mentioned, the Whaley House was ranked by the
- 5:55Speaker 1: Travel Channel as the most haunted house in America, and
- 5:58Speaker 1: it's also been ranked by other things like I Think
- 6:00Speaker 1: Life magazine ranked it as a super haunted house, and
- 6:03Speaker 1: it's gotten some other rankings. So it's definitely really spooky
- 6:06Speaker 1: and known for being spooky.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Wow.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Now it is called the Whaley House because in the
- 6:10Speaker 1: eighteen hundreds a man brought bought the property that it
- 6:15Speaker 1: is on and built a house for his family and
- 6:17Speaker 1: his name was, drum roll please, Thomas Whaley. So I know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: big surprise there.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:24Speaker 1: So to start up this story, I'm basically going to
- 6:26Speaker 1: cover the full history of the Whaley family because I
- 6:29Speaker 1: found it super interesting and a lot of podcasts that
- 6:33Speaker 1: I've heard cover this case don't really tell their history,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and I just think it's interesting. So yeah, I'm going
- 6:37Speaker 1: to share that and buckle in because it's kind of
- 6:39Speaker 1: a lot. But this is the history of the Whaley family.
- 6:43Speaker 1: So Thomas Whaley was born on October fifth, eighteen twenty three,
- 6:47Speaker 1: in New York City. He had seven other siblings, but
- 6:50Speaker 1: he was the one to take over his father's business
- 6:53Speaker 1: relations in New York when he grew up. On January first,
- 6:57Speaker 1: eighteen forty nine, Thomas left New York City to take
- 7:01Speaker 1: part in the California Gold Rush. So he was in
- 7:03Speaker 1: San Francisco in northern California for a few years, and
- 7:07Speaker 1: then in September eighteen fifty one, he moved down to
- 7:11Speaker 1: San Diego. And this was actually I looked it up
- 7:13Speaker 1: because I was like, I feel like I never realized
- 7:17Speaker 1: that California was founded, like I for some times old
- 7:20Speaker 1: it was California founded in the eighteen fifties, Like what
- 7:23Speaker 1: the heck?
- 7:24Speaker 2: And it was, And I looked it up.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And this when he moved down there in eighteen fifty one,
- 7:30Speaker 1: it was about a year and a half after the
- 7:31Speaker 1: city of San Diego had been founded. Okay, I don't know.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It just seemed weird to me. I was like, San
- 7:36Speaker 1: Diego was founded that long ago, But I guess it was.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Seen that to me seems like late, like late to
- 7:41Speaker 3: the game kind of I don't.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Know, really kind of see San Diego is like newer
- 7:46Speaker 1: compared to like San Francisco. Yeah, I don't know, but
- 7:50Speaker 1: it's apparently not so. Wailly actually returned to New York
- 7:54Speaker 1: in eighteen fifty three to marry his high school sweetheart.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So on August fourteenth, eighteen fifty three, Thomas Whaley and
- 8:02Speaker 1: Anna Eloise Delauny I think, were married in the city.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Four months later, the newly weeds moved back to San Diego,
- 8:11Speaker 1: where they resided for the next four years. On December
- 8:14Speaker 1: twenty eighth, eighteen fifty four, Anna gave birth to the
- 8:17Speaker 1: couple's first son, Francis Hinton Whaley. Francis was actually named
- 8:22Speaker 1: after a business partner of Thomas's, and I thought that
- 8:25Speaker 1: was interesting to throw in there because I just feel
- 8:27Speaker 1: like that shows how important like business was to Thomas.
- 8:30Speaker 1: He just, you know, clearly that was a big part
- 8:33Speaker 1: of his life. In eighteen fifty five, Thomas Wayleey purchased
- 8:37Speaker 1: some land in San Diego. And we're going to go
- 8:40Speaker 1: more into the land that he purchased in the actual
- 8:42Speaker 1: house a little bit later on, but for now, you
- 8:45Speaker 1: just need to know he purchased some land and began
- 8:48Speaker 1: construction on a new home for his family. During the
- 8:51Speaker 1: construction of the house, on August eighteenth, eighteen fifty six,
- 8:54Speaker 1: their second son, Thomas Wayley Junior, was born and then
- 8:58Speaker 1: about a year later, on August twenty seven, second, eighteen
- 9:00Speaker 1: fifty seven, the family moved into the home that Thomas
- 9:04Speaker 1: had built. The address of this home was twenty four
- 9:07Speaker 1: to seventy six San Diego Avenue in San Diego, California,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and this is the house that would later be known
- 9:13Speaker 1: as the Haunted Whaley House. So sadly, just a few
- 9:17Speaker 1: months after the family moved into the house, Thomas Whaley
- 9:20Speaker 1: Junior contracted scarlet fever and he passed away at just
- 9:24Speaker 1: eighteen months old on January twenty ninth, eighteen fifty eight.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Oh that's so tragic.
- 9:30Speaker 1: So this was the first of many deaths in the house.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Okay, six months after.
- 9:36Speaker 1: This, their third child, child Anna Amelia, was born on
- 9:41Speaker 1: June twenty seventh, eighteen fifty eight. And then not long
- 9:45Speaker 1: after that, a fire destroyed the convenience store that the
- 9:49Speaker 1: Whaleyes owned in town. So with all of this turmoil,
- 9:52Speaker 1: the death of their son, the fire, the family decided
- 9:55Speaker 1: to move up to San Francisco. About six months after that,
- 9:59Speaker 1: in January eight, eighteen fifty nine, Whaley decided to basically
- 10:03Speaker 1: turn all of his remaining affairs down in San Diego
- 10:06Speaker 1: over to a business associate named Frank Ames. So at
- 10:10Speaker 1: this point they had moved up to San Francisco. Thomas
- 10:13Speaker 1: had sold off all of his business down in San Diego,
- 10:16Speaker 1: but they did still own.
- 10:18Speaker 2: The Whaley House. Okay.
- 10:20Speaker 1: While they were in San Francisco, they had three more children,
- 10:22Speaker 1: George hay Ringold on November fifth, eighteen sixty Violet Elouise
- 10:28Speaker 1: on October fourteenth, eighteen sixty two, and Corin Lillian on
- 10:32Speaker 1: September fourth, eighteen sixty four.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Oh, that's those names, those are que I know.
- 10:38Speaker 1: In mid eighteen sixty eight, with the family still living
- 10:41Speaker 1: in San Francisco, Thomas Waaey decided to invest some of
- 10:45Speaker 1: the capital that he had gotten doing business in San Francisco.
- 10:48Speaker 1: So he purchased some new merchandise for a store, like
- 10:52Speaker 1: a convenience store I think, and headed back down to
- 10:54Speaker 1: San Diego over the next few months.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Actually, before I.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Say this, I did hear in one source that it
- 11:00Speaker 1: was partially because of the earthquake that happened in San Francisco,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and that's like part of the reason they moved back
- 11:06Speaker 1: down to San Diego. But I only heard that in
- 11:08Speaker 1: one source, so I'm not one hundred percent sure, Okay.
- 11:11Speaker 1: So over the next few months, he fixed up the
- 11:13Speaker 1: old Whaley House, you know, just kind of cleaned it
- 11:16Speaker 1: up because nobody had been living there. And on December twelfth,
- 11:18Speaker 1: eighteen sixty eight, the entire Whalley family arrived back in
- 11:22Speaker 1: San Diego and moved back into the house. Over the
- 11:25Speaker 1: next few years, the family experienced quite a bit of
- 11:28Speaker 1: turmoil while living in the house. On January fifth, eighteen
- 11:31Speaker 1: eighty two, both Violet and Anna got married. Anna, the daughter,
- 11:35Speaker 1: not the mom, got married inside of the Whaley House
- 11:40Speaker 1: and Anna actually married her first cousin, John T.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Whaley.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Okay, so you know you do you but yeah, go
- 11:47Speaker 1: off girl, Yeah. And Violet married a na man named
- 11:53Speaker 1: George T. Bertolachi. I don't know if I'm saying.
- 11:56Speaker 2: That right, but George George.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Shortly after they got married, Violet's new husband, George revealed
- 12:03Speaker 1: to her in a letter that he had a very
- 12:06Speaker 1: tumultuous past. So because of this, they got a divorce,
- 12:11Speaker 1: and Violet was clouded in scandal. Like at this time,
- 12:15Speaker 1: getting a divorce was like the worst thing, and even
- 12:18Speaker 1: though she didn't do anything wrong, and it was this
- 12:20Speaker 1: guy that was like a total shitthead. She was treated
- 12:24Speaker 1: like she was the one that did wrong.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:27Speaker 4: The women always get blamed, especially back then.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Exactly. Yeah.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah, So she was heartbroken and extremely depressed over everything
- 12:34Speaker 1: that was going on, how she was being treated, and
- 12:37Speaker 1: just a trigger warning here, at the age of twenty two,
- 12:41Speaker 1: on August nineteenth, eighteen eighty five, Violet shot herself in
- 12:45Speaker 1: the chest with her father's thirty two caliber gun.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Wow.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so this She actually did.
- 12:51Speaker 1: This in like one of the back house kind of
- 12:54Speaker 1: things or like behind the house, and her father found
- 12:57Speaker 1: her and carried her inside to the parlor where she
- 13:00Speaker 1: passed away. And her suicide note was actually a poem,
- 13:05Speaker 1: and I don't know if it's an actual Edgar Allan
- 13:07Speaker 1: Poe poem or if Edgar Allan Poe just like read
- 13:10Speaker 1: it or referenced it, but he had something to do
- 13:12Speaker 1: with it.
- 13:13Speaker 2: And it read.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Quote mad from Life's History, swift to Death's mystery, glad
- 13:18Speaker 1: to be hurled anywhere anywhere out of this world, which
- 13:22Speaker 1: is just like so breaking, that is, I know, it's deep,
- 13:25Speaker 1: it's so sad, like all she did was marry somebody
- 13:29Speaker 1: that she believed to be a good person and he
- 13:31Speaker 1: wasn't and it ruined her life.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Don't let men ruin your life for women or whoever.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Thankfully we live in a little bit of a better time,
- 13:40Speaker 1: but you know it's not one hundred percent. So yeah,
- 13:43Speaker 1: so after this, you know, obviously the family was still
- 13:48Speaker 1: kind of like surrounded by scandal, and the youngest Wayy daughter,
- 13:52Speaker 1: Corinne Lilian, had been engaged to be married at this time,
- 13:56Speaker 1: but Violet's death brought even more scanned to the family,
- 14:01Speaker 1: and Corinne's fiance broke off her engagement. So just you know,
- 14:06Speaker 1: just lots of bad things happening to the family. They
- 14:09Speaker 1: just kept running into bad luck.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Dude.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Was this house built on like a burial like an
- 14:14Speaker 3: old Native American burial site or something with like lots
- 14:19Speaker 3: of like do not disturb us bad juju?
- 14:25Speaker 1: Not quite, but you will find out. Okay, there definitely
- 14:29Speaker 1: was bad juju. Yeah, So, with all of these tragic
- 14:32Speaker 1: events that happened while the family was living in the
- 14:34Speaker 1: Whaley House, Thomas Whaley actually decided to build a new,
- 14:38Speaker 1: single story home for the family. So the family eventually
- 14:42Speaker 1: moved into nine thirty three State Street in downtown San Diego,
- 14:46Speaker 1: and this left the Whaley House vacant for more than
- 14:48Speaker 1: twenty years. Whoa So following this move, in December eighteen
- 14:52Speaker 1: eighty eight, Francis Whaley, the oldest son, married a woman
- 14:55Speaker 1: named Susan E. Murray Murray in Mendocino, California, so he
- 15:01Speaker 1: was off living that life. Two years later, on December fourteenth,
- 15:06Speaker 1: eighteen ninety, Thomas Waaey sadly passed away in the home
- 15:10Speaker 1: on State Street. So the dad, the dad. Yeah, I know,
- 15:13Speaker 1: there's like re use of names and stuff, but yes.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah, dad, Okay.
- 15:17Speaker 1: So over the next fifteen years, Anna, who was now
- 15:21Speaker 1: a widow, lived at the single story home on State Street.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Her middle daughter died fifteen years later on December twelfth,
- 15:30Speaker 1: nineteen oh five. And this was Anna Amelia, the one
- 15:33Speaker 1: that married her first cousin and then finally, in nineteen
- 15:37Speaker 1: oh nine, the eldest Wayley son, Francis decided to begin
- 15:41Speaker 1: restoring the old Whalley House, which they still owned, but
- 15:45Speaker 1: nobody was living in it, and his intention was turning
- 15:48Speaker 1: the historical home into kind of like a tourist attraction.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And it was noted in one source that his plan
- 15:54Speaker 1: was to entertain visitors with his guitar playing I.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Just thought that was adorable.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Yeah, So in nineteen twelve, the house was all fixed
- 16:02Speaker 1: up and the three remaining Way children, Krinn, Francis, and
- 16:07Speaker 1: George moved into the old Whalley Home with their mother. However,
- 16:11Speaker 1: a year later, on February twenty fourth, nineteen thirteen, and
- 16:16Speaker 1: A Whaley passed away at eighty years old, which, like, girl,
- 16:19Speaker 1: you lived to eighty that's pretty damn good.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and it wasn't any like tragic, horrible, not that
- 16:25Speaker 3: id okay.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Yeah, just natural okay.
- 16:29Speaker 1: But she also passed away in the Whaley House okay.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:34Speaker 1: A year later, on November nineteenth, nineteen fourteen, Francis Whaley
- 16:38Speaker 1: passed away, so George and Krin's were the two remaining
- 16:42Speaker 1: of the immediate Whaley family. They were living in the
- 16:45Speaker 1: Whaley House. And then like almost fifteen years later, George
- 16:50Speaker 1: passed away on January fifth, nineteen twenty eight, and Kurn
- 16:53Speaker 1: actually lived to be eighty nine years old, which like, oh,
- 16:57Speaker 1: that's really good, Like this was you know, yeah, the
- 17:00Speaker 1: early to mid nineteen hundreds. I don't know, I feel
- 17:03Speaker 1: like that's pretty impressive.
- 17:04Speaker 3: I think so with all the like diseases and illnesses.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Yeah, like that took people's lives so early. That's yeah,
- 17:11Speaker 4: eighty nine, it's pretty good.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and she passed away in nineteen fifty three, which,
- 17:16Speaker 1: like when I first read that, my initial thought was, wait,
- 17:19Speaker 1: that can't be right mathematically, because I feel like the
- 17:22Speaker 1: eighteen hundreds feel like so long ago, and then nineteen
- 17:25Speaker 1: fifty three doesn't feel like that long even even though
- 17:28Speaker 1: it's like actually a really long time ago. Still Yeah,
- 17:32Speaker 1: but yeah, she because she was born in eighteen sixty four,
- 17:37Speaker 1: so she died in nineteen fifty three at eighty nine
- 17:40Speaker 1: years old, so it makes sense. But yeah, it just
- 17:42Speaker 1: hit I was like, whoa, Like we're.
- 17:44Speaker 4: In the nineteen fifties now, Like, whoa, how do we
- 17:46Speaker 4: get here?
- 17:47Speaker 2: Right?
- 17:48Speaker 1: But anyway, she lived in the house until her death
- 17:52Speaker 1: in nineteen fifty three, so she was the remaining wayly
- 17:57Speaker 1: resident of the house and she was there until she died. Okay,
- 18:00Speaker 1: So that is the history of the Whaley family. And
- 18:03Speaker 1: if you couldn't already guess, one of the reasons that
- 18:06Speaker 1: the house is so haunted is because of all the
- 18:09Speaker 1: Whaley family members who passed away inside the home. So
- 18:14Speaker 1: seven years after Crinn passed away, the Whaley House was
- 18:17Speaker 1: opened by a public museum. So the Whaley House Museum
- 18:21Speaker 1: was officially opened on May twenty fifth, nineteen sixty. The
- 18:25Speaker 1: San Diego Historical Shrine Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization
- 18:29Speaker 1: that was formed in nineteen fifty six, was who managed
- 18:33Speaker 1: the museum, and one of the heads of that company,
- 18:36Speaker 1: June Strudwick Reading, was the director of the Whaley House
- 18:41Speaker 1: Museum from its opening in nineteen sixty until her death
- 18:45Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety eight. So this was like her baby,
- 18:48Speaker 1: like she was the director the manager of this house, okay.
- 18:52Speaker 1: And then since the year two thousand, the house has
- 18:55Speaker 1: been maintained by the Save Our Heritage organization And actually
- 18:59Speaker 1: in two thatous seven a caretaker moved into the house,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and I believe he now lives there and cares for
- 19:05Speaker 1: the property to prevent theft and vandalism. I don't know
- 19:08Speaker 1: if it's the same person that still lives there, and
- 19:10Speaker 1: I couldn't find if, like there is somebody who still
- 19:12Speaker 1: lives there, but at least for a while, there was
- 19:14Speaker 1: like a live in caretaker. Okay, Okay, So now I'm
- 19:17Speaker 1: just gonna go over like a brief overview of the house,
- 19:20Speaker 1: and then we'll get into like the hauntings and the
- 19:22Speaker 1: spooky shit that's happened there. Okay, So, as I mentioned before,
- 19:26Speaker 1: the house was built by Thomas Whaley, with construction beginning
- 19:29Speaker 1: on May sixth, eighteen fifty six. It took about a
- 19:32Speaker 1: year to complete, and its total cost was ten thousand dollars,
- 19:36Speaker 1: which in today's money is about three hundred and fifteen
- 19:38Speaker 1: thousand dollars, which I feel like that's nothing.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:43Speaker 3: I mean if you think about a house in San
- 19:45Speaker 3: Diego now for three hundred thousand, that would be like
- 19:48Speaker 3: a shack.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 19:51Speaker 3: So I mean, Harry, you could definitely get a decent
- 19:55Speaker 3: house for.
- 19:55Speaker 2: That amount of money. But yeah, it's kind of crazy. Yeah.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I kind of expected it to be more, but I
- 20:02Speaker 1: guess because it was like an up and coming city,
- 20:04Speaker 1: maybe it just wasn't as big yet.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Yeah. So the house was.
- 20:08Speaker 1: A beautiful two or three story Greek Revival style house
- 20:13Speaker 1: and it was super magnificent for the time and even
- 20:16Speaker 1: now it's beautiful. It was made from all brick, and
- 20:20Speaker 1: it was the first all brick house to appear in
- 20:24Speaker 1: San Diego.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Wow.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And it was known as the finest in Southern California
- 20:28Speaker 1: at the time, and it was pretty much considered a mansion.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Okay.
- 20:32Speaker 1: The interior of the house was just as beautiful, fully
- 20:35Speaker 1: furnished with mahogany and rosewood, pieces of furniture, carpets from Brussels,
- 20:40Speaker 1: and beautiful long drapes, so as you can imagine, it
- 20:43Speaker 1: was just like super fancy, super.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Nice, serious. Yeah.
- 20:47Speaker 1: The house also functioned as different things for the town
- 20:51Speaker 1: at different times. When Thomas Whaley was remodeling the house
- 20:54Speaker 1: in eighteen sixty eight for his family to move back into,
- 20:58Speaker 1: he transformed the upstairs bedroom into a theater and rented
- 21:01Speaker 1: it out to the Tanner Troop, which was a local
- 21:04Speaker 1: theater troop that was traveling through San Diego at the time.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Oh cool, So the.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Bedroom was transformed into like a small little theater with
- 21:12Speaker 1: state with a stage and benches, and from people who
- 21:15Speaker 1: have gone there, it's a pretty small little theater, but
- 21:18Speaker 1: they still fit one hundred and fifty guests on opening night.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Wow, You're like, yeah, a small bedroom and I'm picturing
- 21:26Speaker 3: like thirty forty people maybe, Yeah, it's like one hundred
- 21:30Speaker 3: and would you say one hundred and forty, one hundred
- 21:32Speaker 3: and fifty, one hundred and fifty, Yeah, which I read
- 21:35Speaker 3: somewhere that I didn't write this down, but like they
- 21:37Speaker 3: basically told the women to not wear their like big
- 21:40Speaker 3: skirts and coats for opening night because they were like,
- 21:43Speaker 3: there's not going.
- 21:43Speaker 1: To be real.
- 21:44Speaker 4: You have to squeeze in.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:46Speaker 1: So this was the city's first commercial theater and it was,
- 21:50Speaker 1: you know, going great. But the theater operator, Thomas Tanner,
- 21:55Speaker 1: died seventeen days after the Tanner Troops opening. Oh so
- 22:00Speaker 1: you know, I don't think he died in the house,
- 22:01Speaker 1: but still connelated to someone that died, and sadly, the
- 22:06Speaker 1: Tanner Troop disbanded a few months after that. So for
- 22:08Speaker 1: some time, another part of the house also functioned as
- 22:11Speaker 1: a convenience store that was called the Wayley and Crossed
- 22:15Speaker 1: Wait General Store. And then in eighteen sixty nine, a
- 22:19Speaker 1: room in the Whaley House was leased to the County
- 22:22Speaker 1: of San Diego to function as a county courthouse. So
- 22:26Speaker 1: one room that used to be like a granary became
- 22:29Speaker 1: the courthouse, and then the county also leased three of
- 22:32Speaker 1: the upstairs bedrooms to use his offices and record storage
- 22:36Speaker 1: for the courthouse, and some tensions started forming about the
- 22:40Speaker 1: storage of the records here. There was a lot of
- 22:42Speaker 1: contention between the newer residents of the city aka the
- 22:46Speaker 1: people who lived in Newtown, which is currently downtown San Diego,
- 22:50Speaker 1: and then the residents who lived in Old Town where
- 22:53Speaker 1: the Whaley House was. The newtowners wanted the offices to
- 22:56Speaker 1: be moved to Newtown, and on some reports that I've read,
- 22:59Speaker 1: Thomas Whaley was the one not allowing the offices to
- 23:03Speaker 1: move out because they had a lease. So these reports
- 23:06Speaker 1: basically say that Thomas was like, well, you can break
- 23:08Speaker 1: your lease, but you have to pay me a bunch
- 23:11Speaker 1: of money.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Yeah, But other reports that I've.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Read have said that it was just the old towners
- 23:17Speaker 1: who were fighting this, So I'm not exactly sure, but
- 23:19Speaker 1: there was a lot of contention. There were kind of
- 23:21Speaker 1: several years of battles about this in the eighteen sixties
- 23:25Speaker 1: and eighteen seventies, and then in eighteen seventy one, Thomas
- 23:29Speaker 1: Whaley was away on business and the new towners raided
- 23:33Speaker 1: the house to move all of the records out. The
- 23:36Speaker 1: angry mob even held Anna Whayley, the mom, at gunpoint
- 23:40Speaker 1: on the staircase while this happened, Oh my gosh, and
- 23:44Speaker 1: she was held on the ninth step of the staircase,
- 23:47Speaker 1: and this became known as the Legend of the Ninth Step.
- 23:51Speaker 1: So keep that in your back pocket. Well, we'll come
- 23:53Speaker 1: back to that later.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Ooh okay, Yeah, so.
- 23:57Speaker 1: That's pretty much the history of the house, and now
- 23:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna get in to the spooky shit. So we're
- 24:01Speaker 1: first going to start by going all the way back
- 24:04Speaker 1: to before the house was even built and talking about
- 24:07Speaker 1: what was on the land before. Okay, So, first of all,
- 24:14Speaker 1: this house was built on a site that was used
- 24:18Speaker 1: for public executions.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Ooh, that's even worse. That's way worse than what I said.
- 24:26Speaker 1: And there was one particular execution of somebody who is
- 24:30Speaker 1: now known to be one of the biggest ghosts in
- 24:33Speaker 1: the house.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:34Speaker 1: So in eighteen fifty two, a man named James Robinson,
- 24:38Speaker 1: who was better known as Yankee Jim, was a thief
- 24:42Speaker 1: and crook in the area and he was caught stealing
- 24:46Speaker 1: a row boat and his punishment for this was that
- 24:49Speaker 1: he was to be hanged damn and it was likely. Yeah,
- 24:54Speaker 1: I know, it seems like a lot and especially trying
- 24:57Speaker 1: to get like some accomplice that only like went to
- 25:00Speaker 1: jail or something.
- 25:01Speaker 2: But a lot of people believe that it was.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Because he was kind of infamous for being a thief
- 25:07Speaker 1: in the area and he had been caught stealing things before,
- 25:10Speaker 1: so like.
- 25:11Speaker 4: A repeat offender, right, but death like okay, different time. Yeah.
- 25:17Speaker 1: So this was one of the most famous public executions
- 25:21Speaker 1: in the town of San Diego, partially because of how
- 25:24Speaker 1: the execution was kind of like more or less botched
- 25:27Speaker 1: at first. So just another trigger warning because I'm gonna
- 25:30Speaker 1: be talking about how he was killed, but I want
- 25:34Speaker 1: to explain like why this was such a disastrous execution.
- 25:37Speaker 1: So he was to be hung from the gallows and
- 25:40Speaker 1: after you know, they kicked out like a wagon that
- 25:43Speaker 1: was under him, and he was hung but his toes
- 25:47Speaker 1: were still touching the ground slightly, so you know, it's
- 25:51Speaker 1: supposed to be like a quick death where his neck
- 25:53Speaker 1: like snaps, but the rope was too long, so that
- 25:56Speaker 1: didn't happen, and he was basically hanging there. And it's
- 26:00Speaker 1: reported that he was hanging there for up to forty
- 26:03Speaker 1: five minutes before he died, just being strangled.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Wow.
- 26:07Speaker 1: And a reporter at the time explained this by saying, quote,
- 26:10Speaker 1: he swung like a pendulum.
- 26:13Speaker 4: Ew. Yeah, someone should have intervened.
- 26:17Speaker 2: No, they didn't I mean what was I don't know.
- 26:20Speaker 1: And of course, because of the time, executions were kind
- 26:24Speaker 1: of like a public spectacle with an audience, So there
- 26:27Speaker 1: was an audience there watching this happen. And in that
- 26:30Speaker 1: audience was Thomas Whaley. So Thomas Wayey knew that the
- 26:35Speaker 1: execution happened there, but he literally.
- 26:37Speaker 4: Watched it happen and then build house.
- 26:40Speaker 1: He still purchased the house to build a land, build
- 26:44Speaker 1: a home for his family. I mean, I guess I
- 26:48Speaker 1: kind of get it because apparently he got the land
- 26:50Speaker 1: for super cheap because you know, it was an execution location.
- 26:54Speaker 1: But still it was kind of like the house was
- 26:57Speaker 1: doomed to be haunted from the star and there are
- 27:00Speaker 1: people who said that, like back in the eighteen hundred,
- 27:03Speaker 1: said this house is gonna be haunted.
- 27:05Speaker 3: I wonder if he just like didn't believe in that
- 27:07Speaker 3: kind of thing like bad vibes or you.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Know, definitely could be.
- 27:11Speaker 1: And he was a businessman, so he saw the opportunity and.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I could see that.
- 27:18Speaker 1: So Yankee Jim is one of the main spirits that
- 27:20Speaker 1: people report seeing when they visit the house, and he
- 27:23Speaker 1: was actually known to have haunted the whalies while they
- 27:26Speaker 1: were living there. He's known for making loud footsteps and
- 27:29Speaker 1: leaving what looks like disembodied footprints around the house. And
- 27:34Speaker 1: then there was one particular spot of the living room
- 27:37Speaker 1: parlor area where there's a giant archway, and this is
- 27:41Speaker 1: supposedly where the execution of Yankee Jim happened. So because
- 27:46Speaker 1: of that and because of where they were hearing noises,
- 27:49Speaker 1: the whalies would kind of think that it was Yankee
- 27:52Speaker 1: Jim haunting the house.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Makes sense.
- 27:56Speaker 1: They reported that he would continually make noises to scare
- 27:59Speaker 1: them all around the house. Okay, so the next spirit
- 28:03Speaker 1: is that of Thomas Wailey Junior. So if you remember
- 28:07Speaker 1: Thomas Baby, yeah, yeah, the House of Scarlet Fever, and
- 28:15Speaker 1: it's reported that he has always kind of stayed close
- 28:18Speaker 1: to the house. Visitors can hear sounds of tiny footsteps,
- 28:22Speaker 1: crying or giggling when no kids are around, and so
- 28:25Speaker 1: a lot of people believe that that's Thomas Junior. Something
- 28:28Speaker 1: he necessarily is like scaring anyone. He's just like playing
- 28:32Speaker 1: around and people here like giggling, Yeah, like kids giggling,
- 28:35Speaker 1: and they're like, oh, that's Thomas Junior. Violet Wayley, the
- 28:38Speaker 1: poor sweet girl, whose life was just enveloped in scandal
- 28:42Speaker 1: after her husband divorced her. She is also known to
- 28:46Speaker 1: haunt the house, specifically the second floor and the parlor.
- 28:50Speaker 1: So after her husband's past came out and before she
- 28:53Speaker 1: committed suicide, she spent most of her time on the
- 28:56Speaker 1: second floor just consumed in her sorrow, extremely depressed. So
- 29:01Speaker 1: now a lot of visitors will see a young woman
- 29:04Speaker 1: that kind of lingers on the second floor, and a
- 29:06Speaker 1: lot of people believe that to be Violet. People also
- 29:10Speaker 1: report feeling cold and feeling hurt, sad, depressed presence in
- 29:16Speaker 1: that area, which is just so sad.
- 29:18Speaker 3: That is what a horrible like repetitive afterlife, right I know.
- 29:24Speaker 1: People also report smelling a French perfume around the house,
- 29:28Speaker 1: and that was Anna's signature scent the mom There are
- 29:33Speaker 1: also sightings of a man which is believed to be Thomas,
- 29:36Speaker 1: wearing a coat and top hat that likes to stand
- 29:39Speaker 1: at the top of the stairs. So one person reported
- 29:42Speaker 1: seeing him on the landing wearing quote a frock coat
- 29:46Speaker 1: and pantaloons, and so a lot of people believe that
- 29:49Speaker 1: this is kind of him, like overlooking everything, okay, And
- 29:53Speaker 1: people also report that they feel and smell Thomas blowing
- 29:56Speaker 1: tobacco smoke in their faces. And this is mainly women
- 30:00Speaker 1: who this happens to you, So you know, okay, Thomas,
- 30:04Speaker 1: but it's kind.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Of a rude thing to do. But you know people
- 30:07Speaker 2: are in your home, so you do you, Yeah, that's true.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Other reported hauntings include seeing curtains move on windows that
- 30:13Speaker 1: have been sealed shut, and then people also see figures
- 30:17Speaker 1: in the upstairs windows, especially at night, kind of lingering
- 30:21Speaker 1: long after the museum has closed for the day. Now,
- 30:24Speaker 1: remember the legend of the ninth step that I mentioned,
- 30:27Speaker 1: because Anna Whaley was held at gunpoint on the ninth
- 30:30Speaker 1: step of the staircase while the mob raided the house
- 30:33Speaker 1: to get all the court records. So because of that,
- 30:36Speaker 1: people that are going up the stairs report not only
- 30:39Speaker 1: feeling her presence specifically on that step, but they also
- 30:43Speaker 1: say that they feel a horrific sense of dread and
- 30:46Speaker 1: then feel as though someone is trying to stop them
- 30:49Speaker 1: from continuing up the stairs.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Yeah that's creepy.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that one really freaked me out. In the music room,
- 30:58Speaker 1: the piano is known to play itself, specifically playing turn
- 31:01Speaker 1: of the Sentry songs. People also hear laughter and smell
- 31:05Speaker 1: cigar smoke and perfume in this room. And then one
- 31:09Speaker 1: other creepy thing. There's a lamp that has like a
- 31:12Speaker 1: couple of crystals hanging off of it, and people will
- 31:14Speaker 1: see like one of the crystals moving while the others
- 31:17Speaker 1: stay still, so it's like it couldn't just be a
- 31:19Speaker 1: breeze or something like, yeah, touching them. Lights flicker on
- 31:23Speaker 1: and off throughout the house. Windows will open up, even
- 31:26Speaker 1: ones that are sealed shut, and then people hear lots
- 31:30Speaker 1: of footprint footsteps. And then one of the biggest reported
- 31:34Speaker 1: things is feeling cold and just like kind of feeling
- 31:38Speaker 1: that haunted presence.
- 31:39Speaker 3: Yeah, which is like a telltale sign that a spirit
- 31:42Speaker 3: is a lurkin.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:46Speaker 1: One tour guide that worked at the Whaley House for
- 31:48Speaker 1: almost fifteen years also had a really creepy experience as
- 31:50Speaker 1: he was locking up one night. So his name is
- 31:53Speaker 1: Victor Santana, and he was closing up and like setting
- 31:56Speaker 1: alarms for the night when he heard a woman ask
- 31:59Speaker 1: him why are you here, and so he got so
- 32:02Speaker 1: freaked out that he ran out of the house without
- 32:04Speaker 1: properly setting the alarm code. So the alarm went off
- 32:07Speaker 1: and it called the police automatically, and when the police arrived,
- 32:11Speaker 1: they asked to speak to the woman in the parlor,
- 32:14Speaker 1: to which Victor confusedly asked what lady in the parlor,
- 32:18Speaker 1: and the officer told him that they saw another museum
- 32:21Speaker 1: worker in costume in the parlor, and they specifically said
- 32:25Speaker 1: that this woman was wearing a green Gingham dress. And
- 32:28Speaker 1: with that, Victor told them that he was the last
- 32:31Speaker 1: guide there that night and that there was not another
- 32:34Speaker 1: woman in the house. And this is pretty much everybody
- 32:38Speaker 1: believes that this was Anna because she was often in
- 32:42Speaker 1: the parlor drinking tea. Her ghost is often seen in
- 32:45Speaker 1: the parlor, and she was also known for wearing green dresses.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Those are the kind of spirits that bother me, or
- 32:53Speaker 3: disturb me or scare me. The most are the ones
- 32:55Speaker 3: that are I guess intelligent enough to recognize that you're
- 33:01Speaker 3: there and like communicate with you, because like a lot
- 33:04Speaker 3: of it is kind of like that disem you know, right.
- 33:09Speaker 4: Lurking around on repeat.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Kind of thing.
- 33:11Speaker 4: But when they like talk to you or try to
- 33:14Speaker 4: touch you, or.
- 33:15Speaker 3: You know, answer a question or you know something like that,
- 33:18Speaker 3: that's that's when I'm like okay, bye.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, This next one's kind of I guess a
- 33:23Speaker 1: little bit more fun.
- 33:24Speaker 2: I guess you can say the.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Whaley family had pets, and apparently the ghosts of the
- 33:30Speaker 1: pets are back playing around in the house. So they
- 33:33Speaker 1: had a dog named Dolly and a cat named Winks.
- 33:37Speaker 1: And people will see both a dog and cat running
- 33:39Speaker 1: around the house, playing together out in the yard or
- 33:42Speaker 1: just hanging outside, and people will mention them to the staff,
- 33:46Speaker 1: and the staff will be like, we don't have pets here.
- 33:49Speaker 1: And then also, like I guess, a lot of kids
- 33:51Speaker 1: will be like, oh, I want to give a treat
- 33:52Speaker 1: to the dog, or I want to go play with
- 33:54Speaker 1: the dog, and then people will have to be like,
- 33:55Speaker 1: there's no dog.
- 33:56Speaker 2: There's no dog. Yeah. Oh.
- 33:59Speaker 1: So another spirit, and this one's really sad, but I
- 34:03Speaker 1: had to include it. So another spirit is a former
- 34:06Speaker 1: childhood friend of the Waiy children. So her name is
- 34:10Speaker 1: Carrie Washburn, I believe, and she was from the neighborhood
- 34:14Speaker 1: and she would oftentimes come and play with the Waily children,
- 34:17Speaker 1: and apparently Anna would bake the mom would bake fresh
- 34:20Speaker 1: cookies for all the kids in their convenience store. And
- 34:23Speaker 1: one day this friend found out there were fresh cookies
- 34:27Speaker 1: and ran towards the house and she ran straight into
- 34:31Speaker 1: a clothesline that was hanging and apparently it was right
- 34:34Speaker 1: at the height of her neck, so it basically like
- 34:37Speaker 1: broke her neck.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Oh my god. Yeah, So she.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Was brought into the house to try to be saved,
- 34:43Speaker 1: but she died on one of the tables in the house.
- 34:46Speaker 1: So that's another death inside the house. And her spirit
- 34:49Speaker 1: is said to hang around the house and people often
- 34:52Speaker 1: hear laughing and like children's footsteps running around. Children or
- 34:56Speaker 1: like young visitors will also tend to have conversations with
- 35:00Speaker 1: children in the house, like conversations with quote unquote people
- 35:04Speaker 1: at their height level that are not actually there. And
- 35:08Speaker 1: there's one story of an experience that a police officer
- 35:11Speaker 1: had at the Whaley House and this one just gives
- 35:13Speaker 1: me like.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Full on heavy genies.
- 35:17Speaker 1: And what's actually interesting about this is the police officer
- 35:19Speaker 1: did not tell anyone about this experience until he retired
- 35:23Speaker 1: from the.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Force because probably no one would take him seriously, and
- 35:26Speaker 3: he didn't want to be right embarrassed but.
- 35:28Speaker 1: Right, but he like fully believed it and he retired
- 35:32Speaker 1: he was like, I'm telling everyone. Yeah, So he had
- 35:34Speaker 1: been called to the house because someone had seen a
- 35:36Speaker 1: woman in distress crying out behind the house. And when
- 35:41Speaker 1: he arrived, he saw the woman crying, and he approached her,
- 35:44Speaker 1: and he said that she was wearing period clothing and
- 35:47Speaker 1: was crying as the witness had mentioned. But he asked, quote,
- 35:52Speaker 1: are you all right, ma'am? And when he said that,
- 35:54Speaker 1: the woman looked at him, smiled, and then disappeared. So
- 35:59Speaker 1: this is believed to be violet, because you know that's
- 36:02Speaker 1: where Yeah, yeah, okay. So there's just a few more
- 36:07Speaker 1: things that I discovered while watching the BuzzFeed Unsolved episode
- 36:11Speaker 1: about this house, which I highly recommend you guys go watch.
- 36:14Speaker 1: It is so fucking creepy.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Is it on Netflix? No, it's just on YouTube. Oh okay, okay, Yeah.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I literally never watch spooky stuff, Like you know, I
- 36:24Speaker 1: don't watch carry movies. I don't watch spooky stuff. I
- 36:26Speaker 1: get way too scared. But I watched it for you guys,
- 36:29Speaker 1: and I got thoroughly freaking terrified. So I'm telling you
- 36:33Speaker 1: all to go watch it so you could be just
- 36:35Speaker 1: as terrified. But I'll tell you a couple of things
- 36:37Speaker 1: here and I will link it in the show notes,
- 36:39Speaker 1: so you guys can go watch it yourself. So the host,
- 36:42Speaker 1: Shane and Ryan went to the house and one of
- 36:44Speaker 1: the things that they asked for while they were there
- 36:46Speaker 1: were for spirits to give Ryan like a shiver up
- 36:49Speaker 1: his spine if they were present. And they were sitting
- 36:53Speaker 1: there for a while and then Ryan like began feeling
- 36:56Speaker 1: super weird, just like out of it, and then all
- 36:59Speaker 1: of a sudden, a shiver ran up his spine and
- 37:02Speaker 1: it was so creepy like seeing his reaction because he
- 37:06Speaker 1: he was saying, you guys probably don't believe me, but
- 37:08Speaker 1: this literally just happened. Yeah, so they kind of they
- 37:11Speaker 1: didn't find too many other creepy things, you know, they
- 37:15Speaker 1: tried to do, and yeah, EVP didn't pick anything up.
- 37:21Speaker 1: So finally they were in the parlor and they were
- 37:23Speaker 1: trying to summon Yankee Jim right near that archway that
- 37:27Speaker 1: is said to be where he was hung from. And
- 37:30Speaker 1: so Shane went first and nothing happened, and he actually
- 37:33Speaker 1: said he felt really peaceful. And then it was Ryan's turn.
- 37:37Speaker 1: So he was sitting there and nobody else was in
- 37:40Speaker 1: the room with him, and suddenly he heard a whisper
- 37:43Speaker 1: in his ear, and his initial reaction was, like, who's
- 37:46Speaker 1: messing with me. Somebody has to be messing with me, right,
- 37:49Speaker 1: And they actually like played the audio in the episode
- 37:52Speaker 1: that it picked up, and it was just you couldn't
- 37:55Speaker 1: make out what it said, but it was creepy, like
- 37:57Speaker 1: there was definitely audio.
- 37:58Speaker 4: There, like a disembodied voice type thing.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, So that, friends, is the story of the
- 38:08Speaker 1: most haunted house in America. And I am now going
- 38:12Speaker 1: to rid myself of all of this knowledge from my brain,
- 38:15Speaker 1: especially because I'm home alone right now and it's getting
- 38:17Speaker 1: dark and I don't want to think about this. So
- 38:20Speaker 1: all the ghosts, I respect you. You are amazing and
- 38:24Speaker 1: I would like to never think about you again. Thank
- 38:27Speaker 1: you for allowing me to tell this story. And yeah,
- 38:34Speaker 1: so that's the story of the Whaley House. I had
- 38:37Speaker 1: a lot of fun looking into it.
- 38:38Speaker 2: But I'm not gonna lie. I'm a little freaked out
- 38:40Speaker 2: right now.
- 38:41Speaker 1: So I'm not happy that this is the evening Robert
- 38:43Speaker 1: is not home, but it's fine.
- 38:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you'll be okay.
- 38:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you are in California, but you're far
- 38:51Speaker 3: enough away to wear I think you're all right, yeah.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Hopefully, So, yeah, do you have anything else to add? Andrea?
- 39:00Speaker 2: Really good?
- 39:01Speaker 4: I wonder.
- 39:01Speaker 3: It makes me wonder because you know, I like, well,
- 39:05Speaker 3: I used to really like ghost Adventures, but like kind
- 39:07Speaker 3: of cheesy. Now I wonder if they I'm sure they've
- 39:10Speaker 3: been there. I kind of want to watch them today
- 39:12Speaker 3: and see what they.
- 39:13Speaker 4: What they quote unquote discovered.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Right, all right, you'll have to watch that and then
- 39:18Speaker 1: you can tell me tell.
- 39:19Speaker 2: You about it. Watch that.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's cool that BuzzFeed did it and
- 39:23Speaker 3: they didn't like judge it up a bunch and make
- 39:25Speaker 3: it like.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Real, right, you know, they really didn't.
- 39:28Speaker 1: And it was like a fifteen minute episode and a
- 39:30Speaker 1: good portion of it was them telling the history.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Of the house. Yeah, so it was.
- 39:34Speaker 1: It was good and you could tell that they definitely
- 39:36Speaker 1: weren't just trying to do stuff just for reviews.
- 39:39Speaker 4: Yeah, that's cool.
- 39:40Speaker 2: I'll have to watch that too. That sounds good. So yeah, I'll.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Post I'll post some photos and stuff on our Instagram
- 39:48Speaker 1: as always, so you guys can see the house and
- 39:51Speaker 1: how magnificent it was. And if I can find any
- 39:53Speaker 1: photos of the hauntings and spirits and stuff, I'll post those.
- 39:57Speaker 1: But honestly, I don't want to even look it up.
- 39:59Speaker 3: I will, I don't want it on my phone.
