- 1:48Speaker 6: Welcome to the show. I don't know about you, but
- 1:50Speaker 6: I woke up this morning. It was Sonny and seventy
- 1:52Speaker 6: five degree. Positive thinking, folks, positive thinking. We they tell us,
- 1:58Speaker 6: are slowly pulling out of this thing. Although most areas
- 2:03Speaker 6: got a dusting of snow last night on an additional
- 2:06Speaker 6: what we already have, so the winter storm that does
- 2:11Speaker 6: not have a name, looks like it's heading out here
- 2:13Speaker 6: at some point. And if you're wondering what I'm talking
- 2:15Speaker 6: about doesn't have a name, I'll reference you to yesterday's
- 2:17Speaker 6: show where we discussed winter storms and their names. And
- 2:21Speaker 6: it's also a good easy way for me to remind
- 2:23Speaker 6: you that if you ever miss any of the shows,
- 2:25Speaker 6: you can go back and listen to them on the
- 2:27Speaker 6: website on WHT network dot com or on the social
- 2:31Speaker 6: media pages including mine in the stations as well. Another
- 2:34Speaker 6: roads are bad this morning. Interstate's in pretty good shape,
- 2:37Speaker 6: but the side roads, the back roads are still going
- 2:39Speaker 6: to be slick, snow covered, ice covered. Crews are out
- 2:42Speaker 6: there doing their thing, but there's still there's still bad.
- 2:44Speaker 6: We so have a lot of people without power. So
- 2:46Speaker 6: and of course the schools remain closed today, as you
- 2:49Speaker 6: well know. And guess what. We've got another storm system
- 2:52Speaker 6: coming in Friday night into Saturday. Models varying at this
- 2:55Speaker 6: point one to three. Some models say three to five.
- 2:58Speaker 6: Others say, but it's coming out of this south and
- 3:00Speaker 6: that normally does not bode well for us. But that
- 3:03Speaker 6: is coming in over the weekend, So there you go
- 3:06Speaker 6: on that. All right, we got a lot to get
- 3:07Speaker 6: to this morning. Coming up a little bit later on.
- 3:10Speaker 6: There was some discussion under the dome yesterday about the
- 3:12Speaker 6: high school transfer rule in sports and will the legislator
- 3:18Speaker 6: legislation legislature do anything about it. There was some discussion
- 3:23Speaker 6: about that yesterday. Fred Pursinger was watching it closely, the
- 3:25Speaker 6: voice of high school Sports of West virgin He's going
- 3:27Speaker 6: to join us and going back to the weather. I
- 3:30Speaker 6: do want to tell you I'm going to bring in
- 3:32Speaker 6: a little bit later on some folks from the city
- 3:33Speaker 6: of Charleston. I do believe that Charleston may Or Amy
- 3:36Speaker 6: Goodwin's going to be stopping by the studio to talk
- 3:38Speaker 6: about the efforts to get rid of the snow here
- 3:40Speaker 6: in Charleston, as we have just been hammered starting what
- 3:44Speaker 6: it starts Sunday afternoon, Monday Tuesday, more snow on the
- 3:46Speaker 6: way and so on and so forth. So I want
- 3:48Speaker 6: to talk to those folks from the city of Charleston,
- 3:51Speaker 6: including the mayor, about that. Coming up a little bit
- 3:53Speaker 6: later on, but you can always weigh in. Well, it's
- 3:55Speaker 6: big piglily wiggly hotline three zero four three four five
- 3:57Speaker 6: fifty eight fifty eight. Tony the Taylor text zero four
- 4:00Speaker 6: nine three five five zero zero. Wait let me bring
- 4:02Speaker 6: it to the show now. Our good friend FROMAGDA newspaper,
- 4:05Speaker 6: Steven Allen Adams, Good morning, sir.
- 4:08Speaker 7: Good morning, happy twenty twenty five. Man. I coming in
- 4:14Speaker 7: coming in heavy with the snow and ice.
- 4:16Speaker 6: And you are coming in the I mean pret pretty
- 4:20Speaker 6: dressed up there, man, I mean.
- 4:21Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, a rockings pink because you know, real men
- 4:26Speaker 7: wear pink, or I'm told I don't know if that's true,
- 4:28Speaker 7: but I like it. Heading to the legislature here after
- 4:33Speaker 7: the show to get ready for the first gaveling into
- 4:35Speaker 7: the West Virginia Legislature for twenty twenty five. Now it's
- 4:38Speaker 7: a one day affair. They're just here to open up
- 4:41Speaker 7: election results and officially swearing members elect their leadership. And
- 4:46Speaker 7: then they're also going to hear a goodbye address from
- 4:48Speaker 7: Governor Jim Justice later this afternoon. But then they gavel out.
- 4:52Speaker 7: They'll be back February twelfth, that's a Wednesday, to actually
- 4:56Speaker 7: start the sixty day regular session of the Legislature.
- 5:00Speaker 6: And in case you're wondering about this, why so, this
- 5:02Speaker 6: is what happens in election years when we bring a
- 5:04Speaker 6: new governor in, so that's why they're just gabbling. Normally
- 5:06Speaker 6: they'd be hard at it in the next week or so,
- 5:08Speaker 6: but this is the ceremonial thing.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Today.
- 5:10Speaker 6: The governor will give his final address. First, first Lady
- 5:14Speaker 6: Kathy Justice will also give an address today and then
- 5:18Speaker 6: they they'll gavel out until February the twelfth. Then we
- 5:21Speaker 6: get ready for Governor Morrissey in his inauguration to see.
- 5:24Speaker 7: I think this is done specifically to give the incoming
- 5:27Speaker 7: governor time because again, legislative sessions typically begin in the
- 5:32Speaker 7: middle of January for sixty days, but after aggubiatorial election,
- 5:37Speaker 7: like he said, there's a little bit of a delay
- 5:40Speaker 7: by about a month, and that gives everybody time to
- 5:44Speaker 7: get their new leadership elected, get everybody sworn in, and
- 5:47Speaker 7: gives the incoming governor time to prepare, including you know,
- 5:51Speaker 7: working on the budget for the next fiscal year for
- 5:53Speaker 7: school year twenty twenty six, So gives everybody a little
- 5:57Speaker 7: bit of time to get adjusted.
- 5:58Speaker 6: And of course the Morrissey and inauguration coming to next week.
- 6:01Speaker 6: What do you think about your music, Gay, what do
- 6:03Speaker 6: you think about them tapping the Marshall Tucker Band and
- 6:05Speaker 6: Shannon Don't.
- 6:05Speaker 7: Don't ask me about that. I listened to nineteen nineties
- 6:08Speaker 7: alternative and punk ska, so I don't listen to a
- 6:14Speaker 7: lot of that particular genre, but i'd say pretty good
- 6:18Speaker 7: get I mean, certainly for an incoming governor. I think
- 6:23Speaker 7: it's a a couple of bands that people do enjoy
- 6:25Speaker 7: and they know the songs or whatnot, So it'll be
- 6:28Speaker 7: very fun for those that pay that one hundred dollars
- 6:31Speaker 7: to attend. Best of luck to you.
- 6:34Speaker 6: So you're saying that Marshall Tucker band not known for
- 6:37Speaker 6: their ska album.
- 6:39Speaker 7: No, no, no, they definitely don't pick it up very often.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Okay, all right, all right, So I want to talk
- 6:46Speaker 6: to you about and we can go back to the
- 6:48Speaker 6: legislator legislature. I'm having a hard time saying the legislature
- 6:51Speaker 6: for some reason today. We'll go back to that a
- 6:52Speaker 6: little bit later on. But I want to talk to
- 6:54Speaker 6: you about the story out of Ohio, and that has
- 6:56Speaker 6: to do with the school in Ohio and its ties
- 6:58Speaker 6: to West Virginia. You don't know if you hear. The
- 7:00Speaker 6: chief of staff of Governor Justin Brian Abraham was on
- 7:04Speaker 6: the show yesterday on a talk line that is with
- 7:06Speaker 6: a hoppy in TJ. Hoppy and TJ. Dave and TJ.
- 7:10Speaker 6: And he was talking about it in saying, well, this
- 7:13Speaker 6: is basically this money. I'll let you set up the stories.
- 7:16Speaker 6: People know what we're talking about. As a matter of fact,
- 7:18Speaker 6: let's go there. Have you set up the story, then
- 7:20Speaker 6: I'll tell you what Brian Abraham said.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Sure.
- 7:22Speaker 7: In short, there is a Stupenville, Ohio based Catholic affiliated
- 7:27Speaker 7: vocational school called College of Saint Joseph the Worker. They
- 7:30Speaker 7: have a couple degrees in Catholic studies, but they also
- 7:34Speaker 7: train you in various trades HVAC, electrical, carpentry, whatnot. Right,
- 7:40Speaker 7: of course, Nordon Panhandle is a very very Catholic heavy
- 7:44Speaker 7: area of the state, and so they want to come
- 7:48Speaker 7: over into West Virginia and do the same thing. So
- 7:51Speaker 7: they want to create a company that they can use
- 7:53Speaker 7: to train apprenticeships apprentices in the weird In area. They
- 7:56Speaker 7: want to give out scholarships to recruit West Virginia students.
- 7:59Speaker 7: They want to perhaps a satellite campus, maybe here in
- 8:03Speaker 7: the Canaw Valley somewhere. And then they had also had
- 8:08Speaker 7: decided that they wanted to use some grant money from
- 8:11Speaker 7: the Water Development Authority to try to create a conservative
- 8:14Speaker 7: think tank. Now that apparently won't be happening because the
- 8:18Speaker 7: contract between the WDA and the College of Saint Joseph
- 8:22Speaker 7: the Worker pretty much prohibits that. So that's not going
- 8:25Speaker 7: to happen though of course they can also do that
- 8:27Speaker 7: on their own anyway, and that's where some of the
- 8:29Speaker 7: controversy lies. They got five million dollars in a WDA
- 8:34Speaker 7: Economic Enhancement Grant Fund award to be able to do this,
- 8:39Speaker 7: So there's a lot of questions as to the timing
- 8:42Speaker 7: because this happened very quickly. You have the incoming majority
- 8:46Speaker 7: leader of the House. They'll get Pat mcgeehon out of
- 8:49Speaker 7: Brook Hancock County that was an advocate for this program
- 8:53Speaker 7: and push for this. You've got a situation where there
- 8:59Speaker 7: could be a conflict of interest there. You got to
- 9:00Speaker 7: not a situation where we have a lot of services
- 9:03Speaker 7: in the state that do that type of job training.
- 9:06Speaker 7: And of course the issue of whether this group is
- 9:09Speaker 7: getting money for a conservative think tank, which looks like
- 9:12Speaker 7: they're not. But still a lot of questions and.
- 9:15Speaker 6: If I don't know, if you got an opportunity to
- 9:17Speaker 6: hear Brian Abraham on the talk line yesterday, but he
- 9:20Speaker 6: basically gave you know, he said, there's a lot of
- 9:22Speaker 6: misinformation about there about this, and he says, look, this
- 9:26Speaker 6: is not going to a his words, I'm very much
- 9:29Speaker 6: paraphrasing not going to an out of state school per se.
- 9:32Speaker 6: But this is going to have ties to West Virginia.
- 9:34Speaker 6: Basically that they're going to be in West Virginia is
- 9:37Speaker 6: basically what he's saying.
- 9:38Speaker 7: Well, only because they're not here already. And on top
- 9:41Speaker 7: of that, any misinformation that might be out there about
- 9:44Speaker 7: this story was largely done because between the Governor's office
- 9:48Speaker 7: and the WDA, they handled the information about this very poorly,
- 9:51Speaker 7: which quite frankly has been par for the course for
- 9:53Speaker 7: the governor justice administration, particularly his staff, have been very
- 9:58Speaker 7: bad about letting bad in hang out there and then
- 10:01Speaker 7: waiting forever to try to correct it, and then accusing
- 10:05Speaker 7: reporters of being biased about it. I won't I'll be
- 10:08Speaker 7: blunt here. I'll we got a few days left of
- 10:10Speaker 7: this administration. I'll be glad when I don't have to
- 10:12Speaker 7: deal with that type of mentality anymore.
- 10:14Speaker 6: That was pretty blunt, Stephen. Sure is you put a
- 10:20Speaker 6: tweet out, an AX out, an ex post about the
- 10:25Speaker 6: about Justice not resigning in the comments that you know,
- 10:29Speaker 6: I guess the Brian Abraham and and others have made
- 10:31Speaker 6: saying that that he would have been in that position
- 10:33Speaker 6: that was a good thing. I guess that he didn't
- 10:35Speaker 6: because he was able to issue the emergency, the save
- 10:38Speaker 6: emergency declaration. But your point is is that whomever the
- 10:41Speaker 6: governor would have been, had we gone through that two
- 10:43Speaker 6: or three governor cycle, that we may have be at
- 10:46Speaker 6: Craig Blair, be at Randy Smith or whatever, that they
- 10:48Speaker 6: could have done the same thing.
- 10:49Speaker 8: Oh.
- 10:50Speaker 7: Absolutely, it's part of the course. I mean, I know,
- 10:52Speaker 7: keep using that phrase, but yeah, it's one of the
- 10:54Speaker 7: first things you would do. I have a feeling the
- 10:56Speaker 7: proclamation probably is a form letter somewhere that somebody could
- 11:00Speaker 7: could fill out. I'm not saying it's not important that
- 11:02Speaker 7: Governor justice't is there, because I think there are other
- 11:06Speaker 7: reasons why he chose not to resign, early one of
- 11:09Speaker 7: them being that you really needed to have no gap
- 11:13Speaker 7: between the outgoing state treasurer and Riley Moore, who's now
- 11:16Speaker 7: in Congress, had to take his seat and also had
- 11:19Speaker 7: frankly more important responsibilities that required him to be there
- 11:23Speaker 7: on day one, including the election of House Speaker Mike Johnson.
- 11:29Speaker 7: On top of that, you had to have the new
- 11:31Speaker 7: incoming treasure in this case, Larry Pack. You can't have
- 11:34Speaker 7: a gap in between those two because when you resign
- 11:36Speaker 7: a state treasure, your name comes off everything including paychecks,
- 11:40Speaker 7: payroll sign Yeah, that's it. So you needed to have
- 11:43Speaker 7: that gap. It was important for Justice to hang out
- 11:45Speaker 7: for a little bit just to do that. But having
- 11:49Speaker 7: Justice there because of this winter storm, which was not
- 11:51Speaker 7: even contemplated at the time he finally announced that he
- 11:54Speaker 7: was going to delay resigning. That doesn't really make any sense.
- 11:58Speaker 7: Craig Blair could have shoot proclamation as acting governor, so
- 12:02Speaker 7: couldn't Randy Smith. Uh So that doesn't really fly to me.
- 12:07Speaker 6: So what's going to happen with delegated de Soto? Brad
- 12:09Speaker 6: and I talked about this yesterday because I guess today's
- 12:13Speaker 6: a very pivotal day in that because what exactly is
- 12:16Speaker 6: going to happen. This is the uh uh, the delegate
- 12:19Speaker 6: elect if you will, from the Eastern Panhandle that apparently
- 12:22Speaker 6: threatened to kill other delegates or or something to that effect.
- 12:26Speaker 6: I'm not trying to make a light of it, but
- 12:27Speaker 6: that's pretty much what he did, and and so what's
- 12:31Speaker 6: what's going to happen? I mean, how does this how
- 12:32Speaker 6: does this play out?
- 12:34Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 12:34Speaker 7: Well, I mean keep in mind they had a closed
- 12:36Speaker 7: door caucus before even those threats went flying, because there's
- 12:40Speaker 7: a lot of questions about incoming delegate to Soto's resume,
- 12:43Speaker 7: particularly in regards to his military service, and that tends
- 12:46Speaker 7: to really upset people. You lie about your military service,
- 12:48Speaker 7: stolen voler and that sort of thing. So they had
- 12:51Speaker 7: already voted behind closed doors to move forward with expelling him.
- 12:56Speaker 7: Then the threats happened, which of course didn't add more
- 12:59Speaker 7: fuel to the fire and certainly mean that they're probably
- 13:02Speaker 7: not going to see him. But the question that I
- 13:04Speaker 7: think they're still trying to figure out. The last I
- 13:07Speaker 7: heard is he's now switched to a registered Democrat. He
- 13:11Speaker 7: of course is on house arrests, So I'm not sure
- 13:13Speaker 7: even how he gets to Charleston to be formally swore.
- 13:16Speaker 6: As I said yesterday, that's not House of Delegates arrest,
- 13:18Speaker 6: that's house arrest, meaning his house, right, So.
- 13:20Speaker 7: You've got a situation where they want to try to
- 13:23Speaker 7: avoid they want to try to expel him without swearing
- 13:26Speaker 7: him in. I don't know how you do that, but
- 13:30Speaker 7: I'm not a lawyer or parliamentarian, so maybe they're they
- 13:33Speaker 7: have found a way. The last I heard, they were
- 13:34Speaker 7: still trying to figure it out. Because if they swear
- 13:37Speaker 7: him in then expel him, well, a Democrat is going
- 13:41Speaker 7: to have to be appointed in his place based on.
- 13:43Speaker 6: Just he switched his party.
- 13:45Speaker 7: Rules over the last decade have been changed to allow
- 13:48Speaker 7: for that. I don't see what the big deal is
- 13:50Speaker 7: in that, because one extra Democratic member is not going
- 13:53Speaker 7: to undo their supermajority, so and that's a Republican district.
- 13:56Speaker 7: Republicans will take that back in two years anyway. So
- 13:58Speaker 7: I don't know it's a big deal to just go
- 14:01Speaker 7: ahead and swear him in. But if they figure it
- 14:03Speaker 7: out away, I'll be sitting up front when they go
- 14:06Speaker 7: through it, so I'll be curious.
- 14:07Speaker 6: It's going to be a very eventful what should what
- 14:11Speaker 6: typically is an uneventful day. You know, this is going
- 14:14Speaker 6: to be very eventful today over at the Capitol.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Very eventful.
- 14:17Speaker 10: Of course.
- 14:17Speaker 7: You know we're getting to it. You got new members
- 14:20Speaker 7: that are going to be hiring, new standing committees coming in,
- 14:23Speaker 7: you got new leadership on the House side. We still
- 14:26Speaker 7: have some slots on the Senate side with Senate incoming
- 14:29Speaker 7: Senate President Randy Smith that still need to be filled.
- 14:34Speaker 7: We're waiting to hear what those are going to be.
- 14:36Speaker 7: So a lot of new faces, a lot of new
- 14:39Speaker 7: people in leadership that weren't prioring leadership before, a lot
- 14:43Speaker 7: of learning curves, I think for this incoming legislative session.
- 14:46Speaker 6: All right, and people can read your stuff where Stephen.
- 14:48Speaker 7: Sure Parkersburg News and Sentinel, Wheeling Intelligentier we're in daily

- 19:12Speaker 6: been out for forty eight hours. Repair guys said could
- 19:15Speaker 6: have had us on yesterday, but AEP refused to let
- 19:18Speaker 6: them backfeed power to the twenty two of us on
- 19:21Speaker 6: one Street, Michigan and Illinois cruis down there working. I
- 19:24Speaker 6: thank them. Michigan crew called eight one to one, never
- 19:27Speaker 6: got help, called city that told him it wasn't their
- 19:30Speaker 6: job to mark, but never told him to call West
- 19:33Speaker 6: Virginia Water. They needed to permit to put a new
- 19:36Speaker 6: pole up because the tree took out a pole and
- 19:38Speaker 6: pulled the line off three other poles forty nine hours
- 19:41Speaker 6: now no power part because of that permitting issue. Why
- 19:44Speaker 6: the city not tell them where to call?
- 19:47Speaker 3: Well, first of all, I hope that caller will call
- 19:49Speaker 3: me at three oh four three four eight eight one
- 19:51Speaker 3: seven four later on today and let me talk to them,
- 19:55Speaker 3: because what we we pride ourselves in our the mayor's

- 20:03Speaker 3: We try to get you the correct information and direct
- 20:05Speaker 3: you to the right folks. So let me let me
- 20:08Speaker 3: first of all, as the caller to or the texter
- 20:11Speaker 3: dave to do that for me.
- 20:12Speaker 6: Please, This is Mayor Amy sure good?
- 20:14Speaker 3: One, oh yeah, Hi, so three three or four three
- 20:17Speaker 3: for eight eight one seven four, So hit me up.
- 20:19Speaker 3: I'll be back in the office. I've got I've got
- 20:21Speaker 3: a dash to meet somebody quickly after this show, But
- 20:23Speaker 3: then I'll be back in the office. If you could
- 20:25Speaker 3: live your name and number for me, that would be
- 20:28Speaker 3: that would be great. That's number one. Number two. We
- 20:31Speaker 3: should always be directing you to call them and doing
- 20:33Speaker 3: that outreach, so anybody listening is that's you know, it's
- 20:37Speaker 3: kind of like our non emergency number or call call
- 20:40Speaker 3: because we can make a log of it. But I'll
- 20:43Speaker 3: make sure also number three that I circle back with
- 20:45Speaker 3: my team as well to check on what calls we
- 20:48Speaker 3: received yesterday, assuming it was yesterday or the day before,
- 20:53Speaker 3: because our our team was taking calls for the past
- 20:56Speaker 3: two days in the office and still this morning as well.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Because we do have people without power, and we do
- 21:00Speaker 3: have people without power in the city. I mean, I think,
- 21:02Speaker 3: excuse me. Stonehead still has about eighty plus Mount Alpha
- 21:06Speaker 3: has about ninety five plus, Porter fifty fifty plus people.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Hickory still has you know, close to one hundred people
- 21:16Speaker 3: without power. So you know, while the numbers are going down, Dave,
- 21:19Speaker 3: there's still hundreds of people with just in the city
- 21:24Speaker 3: of Charleston that are still without power. And you know,
- 21:26Speaker 3: it gets to a point where we want people to
- 21:29Speaker 3: call in because, by the way, if you need help,
- 21:31Speaker 3: you need assistance, you need a place to go, we
- 21:33Speaker 3: want to know those things. We have not received those calls.
- 21:37Speaker 3: You know, the Emergency Operations Center. We have been up
- 21:40Speaker 3: there with our Homeland Security director Chad Jones. Alum Creek
- 21:46Speaker 3: has had some folks who really needed a place to stay.
- 21:50Speaker 3: So while we you know, while we're the city, we
- 21:52Speaker 3: also work hand in glove with the county. Right and
- 21:54Speaker 3: who I call our quarterbacks, C W. Sigmund, who's just

- 22:06Speaker 3: the time people will go to another person's home or

- 22:12Speaker 3: and you need our help to get to a place
- 22:16Speaker 3: of either safety or warmth, please also call that number.

- 22:42Speaker 3: What a storm, Yeah, yeah, absolutely, it's you know, I
- 22:45Speaker 3: was talking to our public works director, Brent Webster. Well,
- 22:48Speaker 3: I've talked to him more than I've talked to my
- 22:50Speaker 3: husband over the past was since Sunday, and this isn't
- 22:54Speaker 3: This is so unique and different than many of the
- 22:57Speaker 3: storms that we see. You know, snow inches fine, you know,
- 23:00Speaker 3: I hate to say, so what who cares? We're good
- 23:02Speaker 3: at that. This is like New York stuff, you know,
- 23:05Speaker 3: on a you know, on a hard day for them.
- 23:08Speaker 3: That ice really gets us when salt doesn't work on ice.
- 23:11Speaker 3: But also when the ice comes down on the trees. Remember, yeah,
- 23:15Speaker 3: we've got seventeen plowing salt trucks going nine ways to
- 23:20Speaker 3: Sunday and literally twenty four hour shifts, twenty four hours ship.
- 23:25Speaker 3: I mean, we're running it, we're napping folks, we're getting
- 23:28Speaker 3: them back on the road safely. But when the trees
- 23:32Speaker 3: come down, I also have to take care of those trees.
- 23:36Speaker 3: And by the way we had set we had a
- 23:38Speaker 3: lot of drivers. I won't give the number now because
- 23:40Speaker 3: it may have changed. A lot of drivers get stuck.
- 23:43Speaker 3: So if my big salt truck is getting stuck, you're
- 23:45Speaker 3: getting stuck, Dave. That's just no question about, especially in
- 23:48Speaker 3: the early morning hours. But also when you have that
- 23:52Speaker 3: many pieces of heavy equipment on the road. I'm thankful
- 23:56Speaker 3: that people, you know, I hate it for small businesses.
- 23:59Speaker 3: If you can go out and have lunch today, go
- 24:01Speaker 3: out and buy something today that they had to shut down.
- 24:03Speaker 3: But I'm thankful because fewer people on the street means
- 24:06Speaker 3: our guys can make it and get through. But it's
- 24:09Speaker 3: not just our police, it's not just our fire, it's
- 24:12Speaker 3: not just our ems, it's not just our salt truck drivers.
- 24:14Speaker 3: It's also our maintenance crew. I mean, we have been
- 24:17Speaker 3: all hands on deck with a maintenance crew. Because if
- 24:19Speaker 3: anybody knows anything about heavy equipment, you know, and I
- 24:22Speaker 3: talked about this the other day, blades break. I got
- 24:25Speaker 3: chains on tires. Sometimes that doesn't always work out, and
- 24:29Speaker 3: so when I have to take a big piece of
- 24:31Speaker 3: equipment into a shop, it's going to take me hours
- 24:34Speaker 3: and hours to do it. And so if I had
- 24:36Speaker 3: one thing to say to folks who are frustrated today, which,
- 24:38Speaker 3: by the way, I get it. A lot of folks
- 24:40Speaker 3: are Nobody wants to see this last and certainly no
- 24:44Speaker 3: one wants to hear, especially our guys who have been
- 24:46Speaker 3: working their fingers to the bone. Hey, Friday, Saturday, we're
- 24:49Speaker 3: going to get another system. Oh, by the way, on Monday.
- 24:53Speaker 3: You know, patient wears thin. You know, when you're dealing
- 24:56Speaker 3: with something, you know, one day it's okay, two days,
- 25:00Speaker 3: three days, four days? Are you joking with me? But
- 25:04Speaker 3: you know we're going as fast as we can, and
- 25:08Speaker 3: we're doing as best as we can. We got more
- 25:11Speaker 3: snow than we expected. The iceer was thicker in areas
- 25:15Speaker 3: than we expected. And you know the calls that I'm
- 25:18Speaker 3: getting now are well yesterday, let me go backwards. Yesterday
- 25:22Speaker 3: when I was out with Rick and we were doing
- 25:24Speaker 3: his route, I was in his salt truck. If you
- 25:26Speaker 3: really want to know how difficult it is riding as
- 25:28Speaker 3: salt truck with me, It's tough. It's tough going. It's
- 25:31Speaker 3: not just tough going because you're on hillcliffs. We live
- 25:35Speaker 3: in the mountain state. You're sliding and I want to
- 25:38Speaker 3: get to you, and I'm trying to get to your hill.
- 25:40Speaker 3: But you're sliding, so our drivers have to remain safe.
- 25:44Speaker 3: But then you know, you turn the corner and have
- 25:46Speaker 3: somebody say, do you mind to plow my driveway please
- 25:48Speaker 3: while you're here.
- 25:50Speaker 5: I can't.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I can't do that. I can't go on to private
- 25:53Speaker 3: property and I hate doing that. Right, please, may or
- 25:56Speaker 3: just just swing around real quick. My mom really means
- 26:00Speaker 3: I get it. Or you know, somebody said to me, well,
- 26:03Speaker 3: you know they plowed my road, but my car is
- 26:06Speaker 3: on the road, and now they've plowed my road in
- 26:09Speaker 3: I'm the mayor of the city. I get it. I
- 26:11Speaker 3: had snow packed up at the end of my drive.
- 26:14Speaker 3: I shoveled it. I had my oldest boy who was
- 26:17Speaker 3: in town, and my husband and I. We did ours.
- 26:19Speaker 3: We did three other neighbors on what's Sunday night night. Yeah,
- 26:24Speaker 3: so it it is frustrating and it is problematic. But
- 26:29Speaker 3: if you have an emergency and you have something wrong,
- 26:31Speaker 3: you down nine one one. If you must get out
- 26:33Speaker 3: of your house, that's the best thing that I can
- 26:35Speaker 3: tell you to do.
- 26:36Speaker 6: This is emergency though, this is this is not I
- 26:38Speaker 6: need to go to work or I need to run
- 26:40Speaker 6: through Tokrogard.
- 26:41Speaker 3: That's exactly right. Or I'm concerned about. Here's the big
- 26:44Speaker 3: thing I want to and I mentioned it the other
- 26:46Speaker 3: day when we were talking. You haven't heard from somebody.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Please call us? Yes, please let us do a wellness chack.
- 26:52Speaker 3: We're good at it. Please let us do it.
- 26:54Speaker 5: Don't you do it?
- 26:55Speaker 11: Let me do it.
- 26:56Speaker 3: You know, the roads are good today, our primary roads
- 27:00Speaker 3: are good today. How good are they going to be
- 27:02Speaker 3: in for? How long? It's twenty two degrees outside?
- 27:04Speaker 6: Yeah, and we've got these little bands of snow, little
- 27:07Speaker 6: snow squalls that are that are moving in. I know
- 27:10Speaker 6: where I live there was probably another half inch to
- 27:13Speaker 6: an inch, which doesn't sound like anything if you get
- 27:16Speaker 6: that snow and you haven't already had all the snow
- 27:18Speaker 6: and ice on top of it. But yeah, it can
- 27:20Speaker 6: it can.
- 27:21Speaker 3: It can definitely impact, and it's exhausting. And as you're
- 27:24Speaker 3: watching the snow go down, think about our guys who
- 27:26Speaker 3: run arout. You know, I was with Rick yesterday all day.
- 27:29Speaker 3: You know, you run arout and you think good, you
- 27:32Speaker 3: go in, you get yourself a hot cup of coffee
- 27:34Speaker 3: and a biscuit, and you turn around. You're like, wait
- 27:36Speaker 3: a minute, I just cleaned up this place. It's like
- 27:38Speaker 3: mothers of the world. You know, wait a minute, what
- 27:41Speaker 3: happened here? So but they're they're doing they're doing really
- 27:46Speaker 3: good work. They are secondary streets. I get a lot
- 27:49Speaker 3: of calls in that, Amy, why can't you go down
- 27:51Speaker 3: to the flats of the East and West side and
- 27:54Speaker 3: parts of Kannall City. Primary roads are hills right where
- 27:57Speaker 3: people get into accidents and crash is go slow and
- 28:03Speaker 3: we're doing as best as we can.
- 28:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Jimmy Riston said it best this morning he was talking
- 28:07Speaker 3: to Chris Lawrence. I think this morning I heard one
- 28:09Speaker 3: of his clips, Dave saying that, you know, we're getting
- 28:12Speaker 3: to the secondary roads today, but our primary was just
- 28:17Speaker 3: like we are, you know, the primary roads that lead
- 28:19Speaker 3: to you know, hospitals, emergency care centers, hills that you
- 28:23Speaker 3: know see crashes and so that's you know, that's priority.
- 28:27Speaker 6: Talking again with Charleston, Mary and me. He's shure a
- 28:29Speaker 6: good one of the Dave Allen Show. And five any
- 28:30Speaker 6: line brought to you part by Bridge Valley. Interested in

- 28:45Speaker 6: slash apprenticeships today for more information. Explain, Mayor, and you
- 28:48Speaker 6: kind of touched on a little bit there. Explain the
- 28:50Speaker 6: priority again, because people if they come into the city
- 28:52Speaker 6: of Charleston. For example, let's say I live in you know,
- 28:55Speaker 6: fill in name here. Let's say I live in Kanas City,
- 28:58Speaker 6: I work in downtown Charleston. I work at a in
- 29:00Speaker 6: downtown Charleston, and I come into Charleston and I see
- 29:03Speaker 6: that maybe Virginia Street, I see maybe Koyer is in
- 29:06Speaker 6: good shape, but maybe the side streets, maybe the court
- 29:11Speaker 6: streets of the world, maybe not as good. Explain how
- 29:15Speaker 6: that works.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Well, First of all, let me go let me go
- 29:18Speaker 3: back to the priority spots. I need to get people
- 29:21Speaker 3: in and out of our emergency services center, and that
- 29:24Speaker 3: includes our hospitals. So that's always number one. Number two,
- 29:28Speaker 3: people that are coming in from the interstate or roads
- 29:31Speaker 3: that are a high traffic area, we try to do.
- 29:34Speaker 3: My road, by the way, where I live in my
- 29:36Speaker 3: house is not a priority area. It's not. But if
- 29:40Speaker 3: there are roads that connect to schools. Bridges are also
- 29:44Speaker 3: a priority. Why because they freeze and people get into
- 29:47Speaker 3: accidents there. So there is a method to the madness
- 29:51Speaker 3: of the roads that we hit first. Secondary roads are
- 29:54Speaker 3: just those side streets in and around your neighborhoods Now,
- 29:58Speaker 3: some folks will say, well, my neighborhood was and we
- 30:00Speaker 3: try to get to those. But hills hills are certainly first.
- 30:05Speaker 3: And I will say this too. You know, we start
- 30:08Speaker 3: every year with sixty five hundred tons of salt, dave
- 30:11Speaker 3: fish something like that. We try to keep up with it.
- 30:16Speaker 3: We just bought another two thousand because we need to
- 30:20Speaker 3: keep We need to keep up with it. We need
- 30:23Speaker 3: to make sure that we have enough. But when you
- 30:25Speaker 3: throw down salt, everybody knows saltan I just don't really work.
- 30:28Speaker 3: But when you do throw down salt, and it is
- 30:30Speaker 3: super effective when you plow on salt, it is, but
- 30:32Speaker 3: it also wreaks havoc on our roads yep, and so
- 30:36Speaker 3: welcome holes. Yeah, the flip side. People are going to say, now,
- 30:39Speaker 3: my roads are terrible. I got you. I got you
- 30:42Speaker 3: because you know, we were in a car yesterday and
- 30:45Speaker 3: we were scraping and part of our blade literally snapped
- 30:49Speaker 3: off that's how thick it is, that's how hard it is.
- 30:52Speaker 3: Some of these surfaces, you hit a man you know,
- 30:55Speaker 3: a manhole or man cover. There you go. Now you've
- 30:59Speaker 3: popped the blade off. Now I've got it. So there's
- 31:01Speaker 3: a lot of there's a lot of money and a
- 31:03Speaker 3: lot of time and a lot of energy on operations.
- 31:06Speaker 3: And so I give Brent Webster and all of our
- 31:08Speaker 3: folks all the credit in the world because it's a
- 31:11Speaker 3: very tough and tedious task. Knowing the routes and being
- 31:17Speaker 3: a skilled driver that is so important. Are skilled drivers
- 31:22Speaker 3: doing these routes. They do an amazing and amazing job.
- 31:25Speaker 3: I bet you most folks if they were on that
- 31:27Speaker 3: hillcliff with me yesterday and this big, huge truck sliding sideways,
- 31:31Speaker 3: would go no, thank you.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:32Speaker 3: I even grabbed the I did the month. I grabbed
- 31:35Speaker 3: the bar handle and ricks Okay, I said, yes, yes, sir,
- 31:39Speaker 3: I'm fine.
- 31:40Speaker 6: We call those and I'll clean it up for radio.
- 31:42Speaker 6: We call those crap bars.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Yeah, because crap I got it, grabbed the handle several times.
- 31:47Speaker 9: And mayor before we.
- 31:48Speaker 6: Let you go, I want to talk about the impact
- 31:50Speaker 6: on businesses. Yeah, sure, Because I saw a post and
- 31:52Speaker 6: this wasn't in Charleston. This was outside Charleston. I'm a
- 31:54Speaker 6: good friend of mine who owns a coffee shop, and
- 31:57Speaker 6: she said, once we open again, because she was announcing
- 32:01Speaker 6: that they would be closed today. They have not been
- 32:04Speaker 6: opened since last Saturday. They not normally open on Sundays anyway,
- 32:07Speaker 6: so she said, I haven't had any income since Saturday.
- 32:10Speaker 5: That's right.
- 32:11Speaker 6: Once this thing does pass and people can safely go out,
- 32:14Speaker 6: please go to these small businesses. It doesn't matter what
- 32:18Speaker 6: the small the coffee shop, you know, the whatever the
- 32:22Speaker 6: retail establishment. Go to these I mean the Targets and
- 32:26Speaker 6: the Walmarts of the world. You know, God bless them
- 32:29Speaker 6: for what they do. And they employ a lot of people.
- 32:30Speaker 6: I get that they're going to be okay, but who's
- 32:34Speaker 6: going to need you? Are these small businesses Once this
- 32:37Speaker 6: is it's very similar to COVID accept a lot shorter
- 32:41Speaker 6: timeframe that soon needs you. So please, once you can
- 32:44Speaker 6: get out and pass by, I'm going to say this
- 32:48Speaker 6: passed my Starbucks and go and go go to the
- 32:51Speaker 6: locally owned places like that.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Thank you. As a daughter of a small business owner
- 32:56Speaker 3: who is his business was shut down as well, Listen,
- 33:00Speaker 3: there's a reason why I called Booth Goodman last night
- 33:02Speaker 3: and said, let's order and we did. We ordered out,
- 33:04Speaker 3: which by the way, my boys were like yay uh
- 33:08Speaker 3: to a to a small business, a local restaurant here
- 33:11Speaker 3: in town. And we ordered up to take it home
- 33:13Speaker 3: last night number one because we were working late. But
- 33:15Speaker 3: most important, that's what we're.
- 33:17Speaker 7: Going to do.
- 33:17Speaker 3: I didn't bring bring my lunche in a lot of
- 33:19Speaker 3: the times and eat at my desk or eat while
- 33:21Speaker 3: I'm on the run. Not today, We're going to go downtown.
- 33:23Speaker 3: We're going to visit as many places as we possibly
- 33:25Speaker 3: can to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner today. That would
- 33:28Speaker 3: be my request. If you can get out, please do it.
- 33:31Speaker 5: And you're you're.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Absolutely right hit the you know, I'd love for you
- 33:35Speaker 3: to go to me a Cupas and Coco's and you
- 33:38Speaker 3: know other good places that have a great cup of coffee,
- 33:40Speaker 3: tailor books and go to those places and by the way,
- 33:44Speaker 3: they have the best coffees.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Well.
- 33:45Speaker 6: Steven Allen Adams on his way in brought in donuts
- 33:48Speaker 6: from a local from.
- 33:51Speaker 3: So excited any breakfast this morning.
- 33:53Speaker 6: Absolutely may the Mayor's not a big donut person, but
- 33:56Speaker 6: you may been that rule today, right.
- 33:58Speaker 3: Now, today, I might like, I don't know. I'm not
- 34:01Speaker 3: going to tell you here's the problem with here's the
- 34:04Speaker 3: problem with me. You don't know this, but my office
- 34:06Speaker 3: team knows this about and if they're listening, they're rolling
- 34:08Speaker 3: their eyes.
- 34:09Speaker 8: But this is what I do.
- 34:10Speaker 3: I take a knife and I cut one in half
- 34:14Speaker 3: because I want this, you know, whatever this one is.
- 34:16Speaker 3: But I don't want to touch the other side, just
- 34:17Speaker 3: in case you want to split one with me. But
- 34:19Speaker 3: normally what happens is I'll eat more than just one half,
- 34:23Speaker 3: so they'll be like four or five half. So if
- 34:25Speaker 3: you see halves up there when you go later on today,
- 34:27Speaker 3: it's because I was half.
- 34:29Speaker 6: In your don all right, Mayor we'll get through this.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Our community, thanks for our businesses for being patient with
- 34:36Speaker 3: us and working with us. We really appreciate y'all. Thank you,
- 34:38Speaker 3: and thank you Dave. Thanks for keeping everybody informed. And
- 34:42Speaker 3: it's it's uh, it's hard. I know you also had
- 34:44Speaker 3: to spend time away from your family, and people don't
- 34:46Speaker 3: appreciate that. Media folks do that as well, but I do,
- 34:48Speaker 3: and I appreciate it.
- 34:49Speaker 6: Uh, And before you know what, we'll be talking regatta.
- 34:52Speaker 3: I know I can't wait.

- 37:35Speaker 6: The voice of high school sports in West Virginia, Fred
- 37:38Speaker 6: Pursingers here, Good morning, sir, Good morning Dave. All this
- 37:41Speaker 6: stuff going on with the weather and so on and
- 37:44Speaker 6: so forth, and it's very it's it's serious. I get that.
- 37:47Speaker 6: Uh Monday morning, Fred Persinger is here in the building
- 37:51Speaker 6: at what six six thirty something like that.
- 37:53Speaker 4: I'm usually here by six fifteen every day.
- 37:55Speaker 6: And you, like myself drive in from Putnam County because
- 37:58Speaker 6: you are from Beckley, sir, and you're like, yeah, whatever.
- 38:01Speaker 4: Whatever, this is not I'm so used to driving in
- 38:04Speaker 4: weather like this in the winter time. I mean, no,
- 38:07Speaker 4: this doesn't bother me at all. You know, My issue
- 38:10Speaker 4: sometimes is the folks in front of me.
- 38:14Speaker 6: Other than that, I'm good, get out of the way. Yeah,
- 38:15Speaker 6: all the way. Friend's coming through. Fred Big Day at
- 38:18Speaker 6: the Capitol today, Steve and I talked about Brattlebey, covering
- 38:21Speaker 6: of course TJ and Dave Wilson Wills as well, but
- 38:24Speaker 6: the lead story of this morning wv Metronews dot com.
- 38:27Speaker 6: Several athletic directors from around the state spoke to lawmakers
- 38:31Speaker 6: under the Dome yesterday about the transfer rule in the state. Now,
- 38:34Speaker 6: you and I have talked about this in the past,
- 38:35Speaker 6: those guys spoke yesterday to the Joint Standing Committee on Education.
- 38:39Speaker 6: This bill, that passed in twenty twenty three, allowed student
- 38:42Speaker 6: athletes to transfer schools at least one time to keep
- 38:45Speaker 6: their athletic eligibility and to put this into a number's perspective.
- 38:50Speaker 6: In twenty twenty three, four hundred and thirty two kids
- 38:54Speaker 6: transferred for athletics. That number raised by one last year
- 38:57Speaker 6: in twenty twenty four. But here is a number that
- 38:59Speaker 6: stuck out to me all this yesterday, Fred. In twenty
- 39:01Speaker 6: twenty four, there were two hundred and fifty five football
- 39:04Speaker 6: games high school football games that were cut short due
- 39:08Speaker 6: to a running clock. In other words, one team was
- 39:11Speaker 6: down so badly comes second half that the coaches staffs
- 39:14Speaker 6: get together and say, just run the clock. So when
- 39:17Speaker 6: we have a change of possession or whatever, we don't stop.
- 39:20Speaker 6: We just get through it. And I mean that's a again,
- 39:25Speaker 6: two hundred and fifty five too, So take us back
- 39:29Speaker 6: to yesterday.
- 39:29Speaker 4: Okay, bottom line is this though what you said the
- 39:32Speaker 4: number there, and I think the three words you used
- 39:36Speaker 4: really says it all. Just get through it. That's four wards, Yeah,
- 39:41Speaker 4: that's forwards. But anyway, that's not what we remember for
- 39:47Speaker 4: Friday night lights. You don't want to just get through it,
- 39:51Speaker 4: and that's what was happening. I understand. You don't want
- 39:53Speaker 4: it to get out of hand and it's eighty two
- 39:55Speaker 4: to nothing, and those kind of things we saw in
- 39:57Speaker 4: that first year of the transfer portal. But I I
- 40:00Speaker 4: got a telephone call last night from Delegate Dana Ferrell,
- 40:02Speaker 4: who's on the committee that we were talking about. And
- 40:05Speaker 4: Dana and I have been talking about this several times
- 40:07Speaker 4: since this first thing is that started a couple of
- 40:10Speaker 4: years ago. What can we do to make it better,
- 40:13Speaker 4: to make it right? And I like what they have proposed,
- 40:19Speaker 4: at least it's.
- 40:21Speaker 6: Personally.
- 40:22Speaker 4: I wish to do away with it completely, that's my
- 40:24Speaker 4: first thing. But to do it the way they're going
- 40:26Speaker 4: to do it now, or wanting to do it now,
- 40:28Speaker 4: i' let me state that still got to pass everything.
- 40:31Speaker 4: But I know that he was telling me last night
- 40:33Speaker 4: that State Senator Eric Tarr is seemingly on board with
- 40:37Speaker 4: this and that I think that's huge. Same thing with
- 40:40Speaker 4: Amy Grady. That's huge. Being in the education part of it.
- 40:44Speaker 4: As far as wanting to you can still transfer, Okay,
- 40:49Speaker 4: they will allow you, though, because a lot of kids
- 40:52Speaker 4: are wanting to come back now to their original school
- 40:56Speaker 4: and you couldn't if you transfer. Like you said, you transfer,
- 40:59Speaker 4: Once you done, that's it. You got to stick it out.
- 41:01Speaker 4: You can go back to the school. You just can't
- 41:03Speaker 4: play athletics. So the way he was telling me last
- 41:06Speaker 4: night that they're thinking about a proposal that would allow
- 41:11Speaker 4: you to transfer back to your regular school as long
- 41:15Speaker 4: as you did it before you were a senior. If
- 41:18Speaker 4: you can't do it in your senior year, but you
- 41:20Speaker 4: could transfer back as a sophomore junior ceed transferred as
- 41:24Speaker 4: a freshman, you could come back to your old high school.
- 41:27Speaker 4: I think that's good. I think that helps the kids
- 41:31Speaker 4: that you know. Sometimes, Dave, you know as well as
- 41:33Speaker 4: I do. You want to jump at that change. Boy,
- 41:36Speaker 4: the grass really looks greener at the school that just
- 41:38Speaker 4: won three state championships in a row. But you get
- 41:41Speaker 4: there and all of a sudden, you say, man, I
- 41:42Speaker 4: miss I miss my buddies, I miss the guys.
- 41:44Speaker 6: Thing's happening in college exactly right.
- 41:46Speaker 4: So this gives you an opportunity to go back if
- 41:48Speaker 4: you want before your senior year. I like the fact
- 41:53Speaker 4: that they are doing something about it, because it just
- 41:56Speaker 4: set in limbo last year. I was hoping last year,
- 41:59Speaker 4: after they saw the debacle that it was that it
- 42:01Speaker 4: caused in the first year, I thought, last year, maybe
- 42:04Speaker 4: they'll do something and we won't be affected by it.
- 42:07Speaker 6: But they didn't.
- 42:07Speaker 4: They couldn't get it passed, so hopefully this year that
- 42:11Speaker 4: it'll be different once they get the session rolling.
- 42:13Speaker 6: Do we have any hopes? I mean, what are the
- 42:15Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, they were talking about it yesterday, but
- 42:18Speaker 6: is this actually going to and you talked to Dana
- 42:20Speaker 6: Ferrell try to have him on the show here real
- 42:22Speaker 6: soon as well. I mean, do you think there's a
- 42:23Speaker 6: good possibility that will see some wholesale change here?
- 42:26Speaker 4: Dana felt very confident. And Dane has been really to
- 42:29Speaker 4: me the guy that's been kind of pushing this, you know,
- 42:32Speaker 4: because he sees the importance of it. You know, Dana Ferrell,
- 42:35Speaker 4: he's involved in a lot of things other than just
- 42:38Speaker 4: the legislature. I assume still at South Charleston High School,
- 42:43Speaker 4: and he's got another venture that he's into that he
- 42:46Speaker 4: sees high school athletics a lot. So again, he was
- 42:49Speaker 4: very very positive last night when he and I spoke
- 42:51Speaker 4: on the phone. So hopefully again, I think it's great
- 42:56Speaker 4: that they're doing something about it. At least they're talking
- 43:00Speaker 4: about it, and last year they did very little talking
- 43:02Speaker 4: about it.
- 43:02Speaker 6: And like you, I had heard some some some chatter,
- 43:06Speaker 6: some rumors out there that some of the UH and
- 43:08Speaker 6: I say Republicans, because that's that's who's in charge with
- 43:11Speaker 6: the super duper duper majority. And you mentioned the name,
- 43:15Speaker 6: and I've not talked to I had Eric tar on
- 43:16Speaker 6: the show yesterday, but we didn't talk about that. But
- 43:18Speaker 6: Eric Taramy grading some of these others. I've heard rumors
- 43:21Speaker 6: that there are others, uh that that that are kind
- 43:24Speaker 6: of saying, Okay, well, maybe we need to look at
- 43:26Speaker 6: this because initially the whole idea I think behind this
- 43:30Speaker 6: was and a lot of the a lot of the
- 43:32Speaker 6: Republicans kind of said, well, it's kind of it's a
- 43:34Speaker 6: free market. They can go wherever they want. Education choice,
- 43:37Speaker 6: and you know, and that's that's very common that comes
- 43:39Speaker 6: from the Republican camp. I'm not hating on it. I'm
- 43:42Speaker 6: just saying it is what it is, that school choice
- 43:44Speaker 6: for parents and so on and so forth. I think
- 43:46Speaker 6: a few of them now may be taking a look
- 43:48Speaker 6: at this, uh and saying, well, let's let's look at this.
- 43:52Speaker 4: You know, I think it if it was just you
- 43:54Speaker 4: mentioned education. If it was just education, that's a different twist.
- 43:58Speaker 4: If you if I go to if my son or
- 44:00Speaker 4: daughter wanted to go to a school to take a
- 44:02Speaker 4: different course, that was not offered at the present school.
- 44:05Speaker 4: I get that, okay, but that wasn't the problem. The
- 44:08Speaker 4: problem was they were going because they wanted to play
- 44:10Speaker 4: for last year's state champion, because they wanted to be
- 44:13Speaker 4: a state champion again. Grass is not always greener, and
- 44:17Speaker 4: they I think a lot of students found that out.
- 44:20Speaker 4: But they were stuck with the original bill that passed.
- 44:23Speaker 4: That's been an effect for two years. They were stuck.
- 44:25Speaker 4: You can go back to your old school. You just
- 44:27Speaker 4: can't play ball, or you can't play I don't care
- 44:29Speaker 4: what it was, football, basketball, or whatever. You can't play.
- 44:32Speaker 4: So this would change that, as long as you do
- 44:35Speaker 4: it before you're a senior. And I think that's a
- 44:37Speaker 4: step in the right direction. And I'll be honest with you.
- 44:39Speaker 4: He was telling me another part of that proposal, and
- 44:44Speaker 4: I can't remember what he was talking about, to be
- 44:46Speaker 4: honest with you, I was.
- 44:48Speaker 6: Into something else. Say it's all good, it's good, but
- 44:51Speaker 6: it's all good. It's all good.
- 44:52Speaker 4: And he's very, very confident that they think they can
- 44:56Speaker 4: get this through now. And at least he says more
- 44:59Speaker 4: than just my fingers. So we'll see what happened, all right.
- 45:01Speaker 6: We had a text here I said, our legislators need
- 45:04Speaker 6: to put an end to this nonsense with high school
- 45:06Speaker 6: transfer rules. Also, the NCAA Board of Directors needs to
- 45:10Speaker 6: stop the liberal transfer rule in the college sports and
- 45:12Speaker 6: the ridiculous nil pay for play craziness. It's common sense,
- 45:16Speaker 6: says a text before I let you go, Fred, I
- 45:20Speaker 6: do want to say this because I know you will
- 45:22Speaker 6: not bragg on yourself, but I will mention this a
- 45:25Speaker 6: big honor. Yes, so you, sir, as you were named
- 45:28Speaker 6: by the National Sports Media Association. Is what was a
- 45:31Speaker 6: sportscaster of the year. Yes, sports Caster of the year.
- 45:33Speaker 6: That's a nationwide thing.
- 45:34Speaker 11: Man.
- 45:34Speaker 6: Yes, I know, that's what I said. It's just like, yeah,
- 45:37Speaker 6: I know, I know what's for lunch. You know, that's
- 45:40Speaker 6: a pretty big deal.
- 45:41Speaker 4: Fred, It's nice and I'm very, very honored. And I
- 45:44Speaker 4: was honestly totally surprised when I got the call that
- 45:48Speaker 4: I was nominated, because I was nominated against Tony Coreedy
- 45:53Speaker 4: and Steve Cotton and Mark Martin and Keith Moorhouse and
- 45:56Speaker 4: Travis Jones and Dave Wilson and Paul Swan and a
- 45:59Speaker 4: lot of guys, and I thought, Okay, fine, it's really
- 46:02Speaker 4: an honor.
- 46:03Speaker 6: To be nominated, and then.
- 46:04Speaker 4: When Dave Goren from the National Association called me at
- 46:08Speaker 4: home on Monday night to say, hey, congratulations, you won.
- 46:12Speaker 4: I was really shocked in I had no idea. So
- 46:15Speaker 4: looking forward, there's an awards ceremony I think the latter
- 46:18Speaker 4: part of June in Greensboro, North Carolina, where my wife
- 46:22Speaker 4: will go and we'll have a good weekend.
- 46:24Speaker 6: Well, I was gonna say, so the lovely Jan's going
- 46:26Speaker 6: with you, so there's no chance for me to ride along.
- 46:28Speaker 6: Is that what you're saying.
- 46:29Speaker 4: I talked to your wife and she's not available, so
- 46:31Speaker 4: I'll take my wife, all right?
- 46:32Speaker 6: The wow Fred Fred with it Texas. I think the
- 46:36Speaker 6: problem is players transfer to better programs to hear Fred
- 46:39Speaker 6: Persinger broadcast their game right in state championship. Here's the problem.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Legislature should get out of this part of it. There's
- 46:47Speaker 4: a lot to do in the state. Let's get out
- 46:49Speaker 4: of high school sports.
- 46:50Speaker 6: Come on, all right, high school sports line coming up tonight.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Yes it is from seven oh six to nine Kyle
- 46:54Speaker 4: Wiggs and Joe Bricado. We'll have the first one of
- 46:57Speaker 4: our winter season, just where we kind of trade on
- 47:00Speaker 4: basketball and the winter slash spring sports.
- 47:03Speaker 6: All right, hey, Rad, appreciate it man. Thanks ThReD Persinger
- 47:06Speaker 6: the voice of high school sports in West Virginia. But
