- 0:10What's going on everybody? Alright, it's Wednesday.
- 0:12Wednesday is Q&A day. Excited for five more great
- 0:16questions. I can't say this enough.
- 0:20I appreciate everybody who takes the time to submit a question
- 0:24for the Q&A episodes. I had a lot of great questions
- 0:29this week. If I didn't use your question
- 0:30this week, again, please just be patient.
- 0:33I'd literally keep them all listed.
- 0:36I will get to them all. If you will have a question for
- 0:39this coming week, feel free to ask it again.
- 0:42The thing that I love about the Q&A episodes is it's what you
- 0:47all are interested in talking about.
- 0:49So it's it's really you guys get to pick the topic of whatever it
- 0:53is that we go through. So there are times I'm like,
- 0:57well, I think people would be interested in hearing about
- 0:59this. Well, I know at least one person
- 1:03is interested in hearing about whatever your topic is.
- 1:07So don't hesitate down below in the comments to simply type out
- 1:12your question. I'll add it to the list.
- 1:14Look forward to covering them again.
- 1:16I do 5A week and I absolutely love doing it.
- 1:20Now, I didn't mention this on my Monday video for some reason.
- 1:25I didn't mention that on over the weekend.
- 1:27I went to a card show with my dad and it's a pretty big show.
- 1:31It's probably the best card show.
- 1:36Is it the best card show in Northern California?
- 1:39It's pretty close. Sometimes there's a lot of
- 1:42Pokémon, sometimes there's some Pokémon.
- 1:45There was a middle to smaller amount than normal at this
- 1:49particular one. There were some really good
- 1:53things on display that had me really, really thinking.
- 1:59I made three purchases. One I would say is a pretty
- 2:05decent sized purchase and then I had a couple of smaller
- 2:09purchases. But I will explain all of that
- 2:12on Friday. I'm going to do the card show
- 2:15video. It's been, it's been crazy with
- 2:18everything. Again, we're in the middle of
- 2:20Lucy's soccer season, her college soccer season.
- 2:24Monday was a live stream. Thank you to everybody who
- 2:28showed up. The live streams are so much fun
- 2:32and obviously thank you to my guests.
- 2:34Darren return to collecting Tony Southern collector 14, and Mr.
- 2:39Mike Petty. I appreciate those guys.
- 2:42As always, let me know down below in the comments.
- 2:45Do you want me to stick with the same crew for my live streams
- 2:50the the Homeboys or do you want me to mix it up?
- 2:54Do you want me to do one thing one month, another thing another
- 2:58month? Let me know that down in the
- 3:00comments below as well. All right, so Friday card show
- 3:05video, how that went. I'll show you my pickups.
- 3:07I'll show you the show. A lot of great stuff.
- 3:10Got some dealer info to share with all of you so that if you
- 3:13see something that you're interested in, you can reach
- 3:16out. As always, I try to do that.
- 3:18Couple of the better dealers had some really, really great stuff.
- 3:25It was it was a really good show.
- 3:27All right, here we go. Question #1 this week right
- 3:31here. You mentioned you might use it
- 3:35and I thought you were going to in this episode, but you didn't
- 3:38get there. So I want to ask again, what
- 3:41happens when a grading company via AI can recognize a card that
- 3:46was graded prior then cracked and resubmitted?
- 3:50Honestly they could do this with current scanning technology.
- 3:54PS as terms of service states they own the slab.
- 3:57So if you crack it out and resubmit and they have the
- 4:01ability to recognize the card, what's next?
- 4:04Is it the end of unbiased second looks?
- 4:08Because now they will know what their prior grade was despite it
- 4:12being returned without the original slab.
- 4:16OK I mean this seems like a great point.
- 4:22It, it seems like a logical thought if, if you have taken a
- 4:28card and you've sent it to PSA and PSA has scanning technology,
- 4:32they have told us that they scan every card and they identify
- 4:37every card 'cause every card is slightly different.
- 4:40There's slightly, you know, different variations in the
- 4:45paper that is used, slightly different, different textures
- 4:50and, and things it and they create basically a, a
- 4:53fingerprint is, is how they describe it at PSA of each card
- 4:57that comes through. So if a card is submitted and
- 5:01then resubmitted, they're able to identify it.
- 5:05Now the the cards that are serial numbered, really easy,
- 5:10really easy to know if that has been submitted before.
- 5:14That is all in their database. So if they wanted to look up a
- 5:19card and say, Gee, this number 9 out of 25 of this refractor card
- 5:26has already shown up and we gave it an 8, so why grade it again?
- 5:32We'll just give it an 8 because we know it's an 8.
- 5:35So thanks for the donation on the money.
- 5:38But it's an 8 just like it was last time.
- 5:41That's what a lot of us would think.
- 5:43But remember, remember a couple of things.
- 5:46First, PSA is in the business of making money.
- 5:50And so PSA is not in the business of suggesting that you
- 5:57not resubmit a card. If if, if that if you knew that
- 6:03that card got a certain grade and it had no chance of ever
- 6:06again getting a different grade, you wouldn't resubmit it, which
- 6:10is bad for business. Now businessmen want repeat
- 6:13customers and I, I mean, I think that that's part of it now again
- 6:22that you would say, but wait, if it got an 8 last time, should
- 6:28get an 8 next time. And if we evaluated it once
- 6:32before at an 8, then they should just look it up and give it an
- 6:388. But remember, the the heads at
- 6:42PSA had said many times that there are ranges in how the the
- 6:50grading falls. There are there are standards,
- 6:53there are there are ranges, there are, you know, opinions of
- 6:59particular graders. So they even readily say
- 7:02themselves. They say that a card won't
- 7:06necessarily get the same grade each and every time.
- 7:11Doesn't mean it's necessarily going to get the same grade
- 7:13because it's again it's a graders opinion and there's
- 7:15ranges and standards so it could grade something differently.
- 7:17Just because it got APSA eight the first time doesn't mean it's
- 7:20always going to get APSA 8. It could get a nine, it could
- 7:22get A7, it could get a 7.5. South, one of the reasons now a
- 7:28lot of people would say that is that's not OK, that's not OK,
- 7:33that that's the case, but it's the case.
- 7:36And one of the reasons it's the case and one of the reasons I
- 7:39think they're OK with it is because it allows people to
- 7:43resubmit. If the same card got the same
- 7:47grade every time, that would probably be the best thing for
- 7:53those of us in the collecting community because we would know
- 7:56that that's the grade and and they stand by the grade.
- 8:00But that's not good for business.
- 8:02That's not good for business. Now, a lot of us, and you know,
- 8:08I've been harsh on PSA, you know, and and I know I just got
- 8:12three thumbs downs in the comments because of what I just
- 8:14said. That's fine, congratulations.
- 8:19But my thought is this to a certain extent seems reasonable.
- 8:26It seems reasonable that it would be a different grade.
- 8:29The problem is that us in the card collecting community has
- 8:37put so much value on the grade that people are willing to pay
- 8:42significantly more or less depending on the grade, even the
- 8:47same card. That's, but that's on us.
- 8:52That's not on PSA. So let me just give you an
- 8:54example. So high school students take AP
- 8:58tests and AP tests are basically you take a class in high school,
- 9:04it's sort of like an honors class.
- 9:06And then at the end you take a test.
- 9:09And if you perform well enough in the test, then a lot of
- 9:14colleges will give you college credit for having that
- 9:19knowledge. And it'll be like you took the
- 9:21class in college. And if you perform below that
- 9:25grade or that that threshold of depending on the college,
- 9:29depends on the threshold, could be a three, could be a four to
- 9:32five, depends on the college. Long story short, if you do
- 9:36really well, you can get college credit.
- 9:38If you don't do really well, you won't get college credit.
- 9:41Now there are teachers all over the country that will go to 1
- 9:49central place. Like for example, for a long
- 9:52time, I think the one of the history AP testings was done in
- 9:58Louisville. So in Louisville, KY, all these
- 10:01teachers who are trained on how to evaluate this test, they go
- 10:06to this one place, they all grade tests for like 3 days.
- 10:11Isn't it possible that one teacher who's grading an essay
- 10:17might say, this is only worthy, this essay is only worthy of A2,
- 10:23but this other teacher, if they had gotten it, they might have
- 10:27deemed it worthy of a three. Now they have rubrics, they have
- 10:30standards, they have ranges. And it does seem possible that
- 10:37two different people could evaluate that slightly
- 10:42differently, which might make one person fall into receiving
- 10:47college credit and one person not.
- 10:50But because it's kind of a, a double-blind on.
- 10:52You don't know who you're grading.
- 10:54You don't know which grader you got.
- 10:57On average, it's probably pretty similar, but it could be
- 11:01different. So in a situation like grading a
- 11:06card, it's the same thing. Again, as long as it's done by a
- 11:10human being, human beings have differences.
- 11:14Now am I defending PSAI? Don't think I'm defending PSAI.
- 11:19Think what I'm doing is I'm explaining that whenever you
- 11:24have two different humans evaluate something, they're not
- 11:30likely to come to the same exact conclusion.
- 11:33The conclusions might be slightly different.
- 11:36And if I graded the same assignment from a student five
- 11:41times, it's possible that one time I give it a 78% and one
- 11:47time I give it a 76%. It's possible.
- 11:52Then I give it a 79 one time in a 77, it's always going to be
- 11:56pretty close, going to be pretty darn close.
- 11:59But it might be different enough to fall over the threshold.
- 12:02And I know that's what a lot of people say is to go.
- 12:06That's the problem with grading. The problem with grading is it
- 12:10could be A7, it could be a six, but the difference between A6
- 12:13and A7 could be $1000. And that is the problem.
- 12:17But whose fault is that? Isn't that our fault?
- 12:21Isn't that the person who goes? I'm willing to pay way more for
- 12:26that one because it got a 7 than that one that got a six.
- 12:29Now the part where I get a little sketch is when there's a
- 12:33card that gets a four and then it gets sent back in and it gets
- 12:37A7, or vice versa, the same card.
- 12:40The grade changes a lot. That's where I am like, but I do
- 12:46kind of understand why A8 might become a nine or a nine might
- 12:49become an 8. That seems reasonable when human
- 12:53beings are doing it. So I don't know have was I just
- 12:58hard on PSA or was I easy on PSAI?
- 13:00Think I was a little bit of both.
- 13:03Was I hard on the card community?
- 13:05At the end of the day, the, the, the moral of the story is the,
- 13:12the grade is one opinion and the grade is not the rule of law.
- 13:19It is not a fact that that's it. That is the, that is the whole
- 13:27point of what I'm saying. The grade is not a fact.
- 13:32The grade is an opinion. Which by the way, yesterday
- 13:37episode 2 of Surface Issues with myself and Mike Junkwax Hero
- 13:43posted on YouTube. The audio version on podcast
- 13:47formats posted on Saturday. Thank you to everyone who has
- 13:51been supporting us on that. And we talked about what's the
- 13:54difference between fact and opinion?
- 13:57Is A7 in PSAA fact or an opinion?
- 14:03I declare it to be an opinion. This one says I wanted to test a
- 14:09theory with you. Love to hear your thoughts.
- 14:12Do you think there is a difference between a sports fan
- 14:16who collects cards and a card fan who follows sports?
- 14:21Just a theory. There is absolutely a
- 14:25difference. There's absolutely a difference
- 14:28between a sports fan who collects cards and a card
- 14:31collector who likes sports. There, you don't have to.
- 14:37I mean you don't. Kevin O'Leary.
- 14:40Kevin O'Leary was part of that group that bought the big Kobe
- 14:43Jordan card. If you told me he never watched
- 14:46basketball, I'd believe it. Now, is he a card collector?
- 14:50Is he a card investor? That's a whole another thing.
- 14:53I'll use myself as an example. I watch my Niner games.
- 14:57I love watching my 49er games and I don't have many 49er
- 15:04cards, not at least of the modern players I don't have.
- 15:10I don't really have many Brock Purdies.
- 15:14I don't. I mean, I don't have many
- 15:16Christian Mccaffrey's. Maybe I should, maybe I should,
- 15:20but I don't. So I am a sports fan of my
- 15:2349ers, but I don't collect their cards.
- 15:27I also collect cards of guys that have never watched play.
- 15:32I like hockey. I don't watch much hockey,
- 15:36although playoff hockey is fantastic, but I still want a
- 15:41Mario Lemieux rookie card and a Wayne Gretzky rookie card.
- 15:45But I don't watch hockey. But I want their cards.
- 15:50So I don't think you. You definitely don't have to be
- 15:54a sports fan to like sports cards.
- 15:57My buddy Dylan Double D, he readily admits he, he rarely
- 16:03watches baseball anymore, but he collects modern baseball cards.
- 16:07He collect, he has a whole bunch of Aaron Judge carts, but he
- 16:11doesn't watch baseball cards. I've been talking about Dylan a
- 16:14lot lately. Maybe I should have Dylan on.
- 16:16Dylan, you got to come on soon because we've been talking a lot
- 16:20and and I've been talking about you a lot.
- 16:23So we should, we should talk, we should get together and, and do
- 16:25a video soon on something. I don't know what, but but Dylan
- 16:30doesn't watch a lot of baseball, but Dylan collects baseball
- 16:34cards. So there are also people who are
- 16:39huge fans of their team and they collect Keith lonely basement,
- 16:45lonely basement baseball cards. He collects Yankee cards and he
- 16:51follows the Yankees closely. Mookie.
- 16:54Mookie follows Mets game super closely and he collects cards.
- 17:00So is there a difference? There is a difference.
- 17:04I don't think either way it's mutually exclusive.
- 17:06You don't have to collect cards to be a sports fan.
- 17:10You don't have to be a sports fan to collect cards.
- 17:13Is there a difference? Yeah, I I suppose there's a
- 17:17difference. There are some people who are
- 17:22really avid fans of their teams and they're avid collectors of
- 17:28the players of their teams, and there are other people who are
- 17:31avid collectors but don't really follow it that closely.
- 17:37I think I answered the question. I believe that it's both.
- 17:45You could be either. I don't think it's the same
- 17:47thing. I think that it could be
- 17:49different. This one states another
- 17:53fantastic episode. First, thank you for answering
- 17:56my question from a couple weeks ago.
- 17:59Right now my biggest fear in the hobby is all this talk about
- 18:03stricter standards in PSA grading vintage cards.
- 18:06And I'm already seeing the results of this.
- 18:09New collectors coming into the hobby wanting to buy vintage
- 18:12cards but can't trust that the grades are accurate in old slabs
- 18:17and feel that only new slabs can be trusted.
- 18:21Most new collectors don't have the experience to judge a card
- 18:25on their own and hearing and seeing all this negativity about
- 18:29old slabs is causing a divide between the same grade that's in
- 18:34my opinion only going to get wider.
- 18:37Your thoughts on this I would like to know.
- 18:41So I totally respect what you're saying.
- 18:45I totally respect that you say. My biggest fear for the hobby is
- 18:49that nobody can really trust grades as much because old
- 18:55grading standards seem to be easier than current grading
- 18:58standards. Some grading standards seem to
- 19:02at times change, like even the published grading standards have
- 19:06changed. Things are clearly kind of a
- 19:09moving target. And I understand where you're
- 19:12coming from because what grading has.
- 19:16One of the things that grading can do is it can protect a
- 19:20novice collector because the novice collector doesn't know
- 19:24necessarily. That card is mint, that card is
- 19:27X mint. I literally have some friends
- 19:30who I who aren't really card collectors or or at least not
- 19:36active card collectors, and I'll show them a card that I pick up
- 19:40in like a four and they'll go, man, how's that not a 10?
- 19:43And I'm like, well, there's a lot of reasons why it's not a
- 19:4710. So through a, a, a novice eye,
- 19:50through the eye of a person who is just kind of casual about it,
- 19:57they don't see the the little details that might separate a
- 20:04super high end card from a mid grade card.
- 20:08And what grading, one of the things that grading I think does
- 20:12do is it does to at least some extent protect those people.
- 20:17But we went from the Wild West for years where it was all about
- 20:24knowledge of condition. Like it was, it was the people
- 20:29who knew condition had tons of power over people who didn't
- 20:35know condition. And if you didn't know condition
- 20:39and you didn't trust your own eye, you probably were just
- 20:43like, oh, I, I thought it was nice.
- 20:45I I guess it's not nice. Oh, oh, that little thing right
- 20:48there, like that's not supposed to be there.
- 20:51So what grading did is it took it from the Wild West to where
- 20:55there's at least some policing of it, and it's not really
- 20:58policing of it. But what happened was I think
- 21:01that the pendulum swung all the way from the Wild West to the
- 21:05opposite where it was like authoritarian.
- 21:09It was like A7 is a 7 is a 7A6 is a 6A6 is never as good as a
- 21:147A7 is never as good as an 8A3 is clearly inferior to A5.
- 21:20And I feel like we went from the Wild West where it was all kind
- 21:23of like nobody really knew unless you knew.
- 21:28And then it went to, well, they told me so.
- 21:31So that's a fact. And like I just said a second
- 21:35ago, a grade is not a fact. A grade is an opinion.
- 21:39So I think we went from this thing where there were no of
- 21:42outside third party opinions. It was just completely up to the
- 21:46two people involved in the deal to we introduced a third party
- 21:51opinion which I think in my opinion brings some value in.
- 21:55Some people are super anti grading.
- 21:57I think grading provides some value, but what grading does,
- 22:01what grading really does is grading is an opinion and
- 22:07grading is a data point. It's not the data point.
- 22:12It is not the end of the debate. It is one opinion in the debate.
- 22:21So I hear what you're saying about you fear it.
- 22:25Your biggest fear for the hobby is that grading standards are
- 22:29not as trusted. I actually kind of feel the
- 22:33opposite. I actually feel like what
- 22:36happened was collectors and dealers had all the power before
- 22:42and the the knowledgeable collector had tons more power
- 22:46and the less knowledgeable collector had very little power.
- 22:50That's how it was that we gave all of the power to the grading
- 22:55companies. We just handed it over.
- 22:58We said whatever they say, whatever they say goes.
- 23:02Oh, they said it's an 8. I guess it's an 8.
- 23:04So we should charge 8 prices. It's they say it's an 8.
- 23:08Well, there's there must not be a mistake, but over time and
- 23:12what and say what you will about social media, say what you will
- 23:16about YouTube, say what you will about, you know, different
- 23:19people in the hobby sharing experiences and things.
- 23:23But what I think one of the one of the biggest benefits of of
- 23:29the hobby community being connected like it is now, like I
- 23:34am sitting here in Sacramento and you could be watching this
- 23:37from across the world by sharing opinions, by sharing evidence,
- 23:41by sharing experiences, what we now have done is we have taken
- 23:46the power back and over time, what has happened over time is
- 23:52enough. People said, man, this card got
- 23:55a six that has writing on it. They made a mistake.
- 23:59Oh, look at this. This card was a 4I cracked it
- 24:03and resubmitted it. Now it's a six.
- 24:06Oh, look at this. I had it in an 8.
- 24:08I cracked it and resubmitted it. Now it's a 5.
- 24:12What that what all of that research, and that's basically
- 24:16what it is, is it's research. What all of that research has
- 24:19done is it's LED everyone to realize that the grade is not a
- 24:26fact. It's just an opinion and by
- 24:29being an opinion it gives us the power.
- 24:33Back when people believed the grades were a fact and not an
- 24:38opinion, all of the power was held by them.
- 24:42So what was happening is if if you were able to get that card
- 24:47in a high grade, it was worth more 100% of the time.
- 24:53And what has happened now is people go this is a 5, but this
- 24:59is a really low end 5. This is a old grade 5.
- 25:04And this five over here, this 5 is a really nice five that is an
- 25:09undergraded 5. So these two fives are no longer
- 25:13the same. That to me is a movement that is
- 25:18good for the hobby because what happened was we handed all of
- 25:24our power. We just took all of our chips
- 25:26and pushed them to the center of the table and said, whatever you
- 25:28say, grading companies. And now what we've done is we
- 25:33say, well, thanks for your opinion.
- 25:37It's like going to the doctor and the doctor saying, I got bad
- 25:41news for you. You have a brain tumor and you
- 25:45go, I'm going to get another opinion.
- 25:47And then you go to the other doctor and they say, I don't
- 25:49know what that guy was talking about.
- 25:51You don't have a brain tumor. How is that possible?
- 25:55How is it possible that one could say I do and the other
- 26:00could say I don't? Well, because unless you're
- 26:04physically looking at the brain tumor, it's just an opinion.
- 26:11The same thing with cards. They I like third party
- 26:15opinions. I believe, I believe that SGC
- 26:21and PSA and BGSI believe that has helped the the the hobby
- 26:28grow because it gives an opinion, a third party opinion
- 26:34to a person who may not have a real strong knowledge base of
- 26:41what the actual condition of a card is.
- 26:43It, it kind of helps educate them on the approximate range of
- 26:49the quality of the card. But now that we've been able to
- 26:53share experiences and we've been able to share our thoughts and
- 26:57our opinions and show, look, this is what happened when I did
- 27:01this. This is what happened when I did
- 27:03this. This card sold for this, this
- 27:04one sold for this. We've started to take the hobby
- 27:08control back and that is where it belongs.
- 27:12The hobby belongs to the people and the control of the hobby
- 27:17belongs to the collectors. And I believe it's a good thing.
- 27:24I do believe that. And, and to your point about
- 27:27some new collectors not knowing that they're all different,
- 27:32that's one of the reasons I keep beating the drum, the dead, the
- 27:36horse is dead and I'm just beating it, beating it with
- 27:41things about grading. And the reason why is because
- 27:46there are always new people showing up.
- 27:48There are always collectors who aren't fully convinced yet.
- 27:52I think when there's evidence to present that the grade is an
- 27:58opinion and not a fact, I believe that that is an
- 28:01opportunity that we want to, as advocates of the hobby, of
- 28:07ensuring the health of the hobby.
- 28:09I think it's important that we continue to share that.
- 28:12I'm not going to sit here and say that grading is the evil
- 28:18empire of a card collecting. I don't think that.
- 28:22I think it brings a lot of good, but it also has some bad
- 28:26components to it. And when there's good things
- 28:29that are happening or bad things that are happening, I want to
- 28:31share it so that when those people are coming back into the
- 28:34hobby or entering the hobby, there's a place where I they can
- 28:39say, oh, OK, so it's not a fact, it's an opinion.
- 28:43That's always my goal. And that gave us control back.
- 28:49This one says, hey Greg, question for a future episode.
- 28:54If you were to pick anywhere in the United States to live based
- 28:58solely on the card hobby, where would you pick?
- 29:02What would be the determining factors in that choice?
- 29:06Access to card shows easy proximity to fellow YouTube
- 29:10creators. Thanks and I look forward to
- 29:13your answer if you decide to share.
- 29:17This is a fun question and I would say I, I first read this
- 29:21question like Friday, and when I read it, I've thought more about
- 29:29this question. For whatever reason, I've
- 29:32thought more about this question than any question I've gone in a
- 29:35while, which says I don't know what that says about me.
- 29:38I, I went to a card show with my dad over the weekend, which I
- 29:42mentioned earlier. And I have a tradition that
- 29:47whenever I'm driving to or from a card show with my dad or with
- 29:51myself, I call Mookie Chilson. I tell him how it went.
- 29:55And I was talking to Mookie on Saturday and I said, Mookie,
- 30:00we're doing this show. This is what's going on.
- 30:03And he said, I am driving with Sammy Thunder on Sunday to the
- 30:09Philly card show. And I was like, now I'm jealous.
- 30:15There are so many shows that happen in the Northeast.
- 30:21There's the, you know, East Coast national, there's the
- 30:24Philly show that, you know, strongs Villas in that area.
- 30:29There's Fanatics Fest, which even though I'm, I, I would
- 30:32still be interested in attending a Fanatics fest.
- 30:35There's, you know, you guys know them all where they're, they're
- 30:39always up there. There's always a show going on
- 30:43in the, the Northeast. A lot of my hobby friends live
- 30:48in the Northeast now. I have hobby friends that live
- 30:52in other places too. You know, people say, oh, you
- 30:55and Petty both live in California.
- 30:58Petty is a 7 hour drive from me. Yes, he is in California, 7
- 31:04hours away. And you know, I have friends in
- 31:09Texas, I have friends in Colorado, I have friends in
- 31:11Florida, I have friends in the Carolinas, I have friends in
- 31:15Pennsylvania. And you guys know where you
- 31:17live? So if I were to pick a place to
- 31:21live, I would want to live near where some of my friends live
- 31:26and central to where a lot of the shows are.
- 31:30I actually think the Pennsylvania area especially
- 31:36kind of like Eastern Pennsylvania is probably a
- 31:40pretty good spot because it's not crazy far.
- 31:44If you wanted to go to Chicago, where the National is a lot,
- 31:48it's not that far from Strongsville.
- 31:52It's not that far from Cleveland, which sometimes hosts
- 31:54the National. It's not that far from Shriners
- 31:58or, or you know, the Fanatics Fest.
- 32:02It's it's obviously right at the Philly show.
- 32:06So I kind of think if, if I would, I would really choose, I
- 32:12think Eastern Pennsylvania, if I had to pick a place.
- 32:18I also have several guys that are in the hobby that I really
- 32:22like that live in the Philly area.
- 32:25So if I would be able to run into them or hang out with them
- 32:29even. So that's probably what I would
- 32:33choose. Now I have a few guys that I'm
- 32:37really good friends with, not just card friends, but really
- 32:41good friends with who are also card friends that live in that
- 32:46area. That part of me would say, man,
- 32:52it'd be really fun to live in the same town as, you know, Tony
- 32:59Southern Collector or Mookie Chilson or Darren Return to
- 33:04Collecting, I mean to name a few.
- 33:07There are a lot more guys that I'm also good friends with, but
- 33:11part of me is like, it'd be really fun to live in the same
- 33:13town as Sam. But from the card collecting
- 33:18thing being central to a lot of those shows and not horribly far
- 33:27from where a lot of these same people live, that'd be pretty
- 33:31cool. So I'm going Philly and finally
- 33:38this one says question. I know you don't give out
- 33:41investment advice, but I thought this would be a fun question to
- 33:45ponder over. If you were going to invest in
- 33:48potential Hall of Fame football players cards and you thought
- 33:54they would go up in value once they're voted in, which players
- 33:59other than the obvious Brees, Brady, Mahomes, Fitzgerald, JJ
- 34:04Watt, Aaron Donald, would you invest in?
- 34:08What other players cards do you think will be logical Hall of
- 34:12Fame inductees and would likely have good investment potential?
- 34:20All right, I have many thoughts about this one.
- 34:24First of all, I wouldn't, I wouldn't invest in football
- 34:33cards of guys who aren't in the Hall of Fame where I think them
- 34:39making the Hall of Fame would make them go up in value.
- 34:43I, I, I wouldn't do that. Now I have been to the Baseball
- 34:47Hall of Fame. I have been to the Football Hall
- 34:49of Fame. There are way more guys in the
- 34:52Football Hall of Fame that I don't know who they are than the
- 34:57Baseball Hall of Fame. I feel like the Baseball Hall of
- 35:02Fame is more of a big deal than the Football Hall of Fame.
- 35:08Now, both of them are obviously a big deal, don't get me wrong.
- 35:14But if you may get into the Baseball Hall of Fame, that is a
- 35:19club where most people know who you are.
- 35:26And in the Football Hall of Fame, because there's so many
- 35:30different positions that do so many different things.
- 35:33I mean, baseball, a lot of whether you make the Hall of
- 35:37Fame or not, like a overwhelming amount of it is as a as a player
- 35:43is how you hit and as a pitcher, how many stats you compiled.
- 35:51Well, stats for hitters too. It's not so much if you're a
- 35:55second baseman versus 1/3 baseman.
- 35:57It's like, oh, this guy was a better, a slightly better third
- 36:01baseman. There are a lot of really good
- 36:02defensive players that aren't in the Hall of Fame a lot.
- 36:05Omar Visquel, I mean, Greg Nettles, I mean, there are a lot
- 36:10of Keith Hernandez, Don Mattingly, There's some really
- 36:14good defensive players. So ultimately it's about stat
- 36:20compiling as hitting and stat compiling for pitching.
- 36:26That's kind of like what makes you in the Baseball Hall of
- 36:28Fame. And, and I'm getting off the
- 36:30rails, so let me pull myself back in.
- 36:32So I wouldn't do it because I feel like if you are in the Hall
- 36:38of Fame as a football player, it doesn't suddenly make you way
- 36:44more relevant or in a club that is clearly separated from the
- 36:50others. I feel like in baseball, if you
- 36:53aren't in the Hall of Fame and then you get in, you're like in
- 36:56this club that is just different.
- 37:02So I don't see somebody in football who's not in the Hall
- 37:07of Fame. Like I love Roger Craig.
- 37:10Roger Craig was my guy growing up and he absolutely should be
- 37:14in the Hall of Fame, but he's not in the Hall of Fame.
- 37:18So if Roger Craig were to make the Hall of Fame, would his 84
- 37:22tops rookie card surge in value? No, it wouldn't.
- 37:27It just wouldn't. It would give him another thing
- 37:30to inscribe on on on an autograph, but it wouldn't make
- 37:35his card surge. It wouldn't be a game changer
- 37:39for his collectibility. Ultimately with football, and I
- 37:47don't really like this so much about football card collecting,
- 37:50but it is so much about the quarterback.
- 37:53It is like the quarterback. Then there's like a big drop off
- 37:59and there's like wide receiver running back and then it's like
- 38:04that maybe tight end. I mean, there's some incredible
- 38:10linebackers and lineman and safeties and cornerbacks.
- 38:16The cards aren't worth Jack. So I wouldn't invest in a player
- 38:23thinking well, I wouldn't invest in I, I wouldn't I wouldn't
- 38:28invest in cards of guys who aren't are already in the Hall
- 38:32of Fame. I personally don't invest in
- 38:36cards. I just buy cards and then hope
- 38:39they go up. Now back to your question.
- 38:43You listed some, so I'm going to answer the question, but I
- 38:46wouldn't do this. I'll answer the question because
- 38:50I'm, I'm not going to just avoid it.
- 38:53You listed some names you you listed like Mahomes and Aaron
- 38:57Donald and and some some other guys.
- 39:01So my thought is which players that you didn't list and aren't
- 39:10in the Hall of Fame do I think have their cards have a good
- 39:16amount of potential? Well, the person you didn't live
- 39:21there. There's one that kind of jumps.
- 39:22I mean, someone was there was something about Eli Manning.
- 39:24I think you, you mentioned Eli Manning in the question.
- 39:28I, I wouldn't go out and buy a bunch of Eli Manning cards
- 39:31personally. Again, it, it's not always
- 39:37about, did you win a title? It's not always about your
- 39:41stats, 'cause there are a lot of players, a lot of stats.
- 39:44I mean, Dan Fouts has incredible stats and he's in the Hall of
- 39:47Fame, but it's, he could buy, he could buy his rookie card for
- 39:49cheap, right? The guy who I think has a lot of
- 39:53upside potential in football cards and isn't in the Hall of
- 39:58Fame and wasn't on your list. I would have said Aaron Rodgers.
- 40:06Aaron Rodgers is is and was really good, really good.
- 40:13And Aaron Rodgers is is a guy who a lot of people are aware of
- 40:18and but part of Aaron Rodgers thing is, is he's.
- 40:24He's a little different and because he's a little different,
- 40:29I think he's alienated a lot of people.
- 40:33And so because he's alienated a lot of people, I don't know what
- 40:40his long term card values are going to do.
- 40:43They definitely have some value and there are definitely a lot
- 40:45of Aaron Rodgers fans, but I don't know if people are going
- 40:49to look back and I don't know what he's going to do when he
- 40:54finally retires or say culturally that could make him
- 41:01his Cards values a little unstable.
- 41:08But Aaron Rodgers is an all time great quarterback and Aaron
- 41:13Rodgers is extremely well known. And Aaron Rodgers played on some
- 41:18really good teams, multiple MVPS.
- 41:22So I wouldn't invest in Aaron Rodgers.
- 41:27But of the people that you listed who I think their cards
- 41:31could have a good amount of value, I'd probably say Aaron
- 41:35Rodgers. But again, I wouldn't do that.
- 41:40I'm not. I don't do investment advice
- 41:43because I that's just not the lens through which I view the
- 41:49hobby. I had a dealer.
- 41:52Side note, I had a dealer at the show this weekend, really good
- 41:56guy, met him like 3 years ago, really like running into him.
- 42:01Super positive guy, great guy. And he's mostly a modern guy and
- 42:09mostly modern like basketball, some other stuff, but a lot of
- 42:15modern basketball. And he said, hey, I'm really
- 42:17thinking about going heavy into vintage for for like long term
- 42:23holds. Who do you think is a good long
- 42:29term hold in vintage? And, and I shared my opinions.
- 42:34I was like, well, I kind of think these car, he was like,
- 42:37give me 5 cards that are good long term holds Give me.
- 42:42And then I, I kind of went through my list and he goes,
- 42:46well, give me 5 more. And I kind of went through my
- 42:49list and I was like, I'm not saying you should invest in
- 42:52these, Like I'm not, this is not investment advice, but I, I gave
- 42:59some thoughts on it anyway. All right, that said, if you
- 43:04have a question for an upcoming episode down below in the
- 43:06comments, leave it. Thank you to everyone on Monday
- 43:09for coming to Midlife live #9 and Friday.
- 43:13Remember the card show video with some pickups?
- 43:17It was a good show. Won't be a super long video, but
- 43:20I definitely took some footage and I'll be sharing some
- 43:24information of some of the dealers if you want to reach out
- 43:27to them. So look forward to that on
- 43:29Friday.
