- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27I'm going to follow this to the letter.
- 0:31This is going to be a lecture that is, is, is is no voodoo
- 0:35attached, No bells and whistles. That was as much bells and
- 0:38whistles as you're going to get. This is just basic stuff.
- 0:42There is no magic. There is no voodoo.
- 0:44There's no secret workout. There is no magic way in order
- 0:50to, to jump farther. Well, because we're talking
- 0:52about long jump and so on and so forth.
- 0:54All right, look at it. I'm going to read it to you and,
- 0:56but look at the paper. Did you get one?
- 0:58All right, good. All right.
- 1:00The approach and take off in the long jump.
- 1:03The approach and take off, 90 to 95% of the long jump.
- 1:08Where should we spend our time, guys coaching on the approach
- 1:12and take off. All right, if 90 to 95% of how
- 1:17you're going to measure success is on the approach and take off,
- 1:21spend your time on that. I'll show you how in a second,
- 1:24OK, hence developing a consistent, correct and
- 1:26simplified runway approach and take off our critical components
- 1:30in any long term program a full and complete understanding.
- 1:35This girl little girl had it by her own.
- 1:38That's natural, intuitive coaching.
- 1:41She did herself a full and clear understanding of the seven
- 1:45points of excellence that I'm going to present in this paper.
- 1:48All right, we'll set you as a coach and your athlete as an
- 1:51athlete on the road to success. It's as simple as that.
- 1:55Don't lose this paper. We did every single night.
- 1:58Every single night you'll have it memorized, but you'll pick up
- 2:01a different way of maybe saying something to your athlete the
- 2:05next day in practice. They're at a sticking point,
- 2:08Kids get a sticking points, you know, no matter how good they
- 2:10are batting, you, you all know Major League Baseball guys,
- 2:13they're hitting great. They go into a slump.
- 2:15Why? Million reasons.
- 2:18So read this over and over again.
- 2:20All right, secondary introduction.
- 2:22OK, next little paragraph. The following three statements
- 2:28are mandatory to know and understand.
- 2:31I'll present them today and I'll show you examples.
- 2:34Today. You won't get a full grasp of
- 2:36it. You're going to have to go home
- 2:37and do your homework. That's part of coaching.
- 2:39OK. The following statements must be
- 2:41understood and used in developing your techniques. 1
- 2:45Speed of release is critical to distance attained.
- 2:50You heard me say that couple nights ago in the science.
- 2:54That's simple. Ride your bike as a little kid
- 2:58down a hill at 10 miles an hour. Slam it into a little wall
- 3:03around this high, and you'll go flying over the handlebars,
- 3:07right? You'll stop, but the speed of
- 3:09release will fly over the handlebars.
- 3:11Maybe you go 10 feet in the air. That's not very good.
- 3:14All right? It's not very good.
- 3:15I learned that when I was riding my bike as a little kid with no
- 3:18helmet and I went over those handlebars.
- 3:20Back in the 50s, we didn't know what helmets were.
- 3:22All right. OK, ride your bike down that
- 3:25same hill at 20 miles an hour. Ho, ho.
- 3:28Now you're going to go real far. Now you're really going to fly
- 3:31over the handlebars. Maybe you'll go far enough to
- 3:33land in a neighbor's pool and not get hurt.
- 3:35OK, guys, don't laugh. That's my joke, all right?
- 3:42Immediate deceleration, slowing down and rotation immediately
- 3:51occur when an object when the. Let's just go to the long jump.
- 3:55When the body leaves the takeoff board, you immediately begin to
- 4:00slow down. That little girl immediately
- 4:02began to slow down. So what did she do?
- 4:06I get I'm so old and my balance is shot.
- 4:08I got to hold on this stuff. Or when I go on one leg or I
- 4:10fall the heck over. She came in here with her leg
- 4:13short. If she came there, OK, you can
- 4:17still jump, but this is a slower lever and you're going to slow
- 4:21down even more. So it's got to stay in this
- 4:25position here. It's just like you went in
- 4:27sprinting, OK, That leg that's free and sprinting and then
- 4:32jumping is does nothing to propel you in that direction.
- 4:37All it does is create an angle in which to deliver it to the
- 4:40ground. And now that it's on the ground,
- 4:42that's going to give you the force.
- 4:44That's all simple science. OK.
- 4:47And remember I said look at the girl's.
- 4:50She took off her left ear, her right arm.
- 4:52We didn't see it. She stopped it right here.
- 4:55Why did she stop it here? If the arm came all the way
- 4:58back? That's like hitting the wall.
- 5:01What's your body going to do? Go this way?
- 5:03If you because of rotation? Because of rotation.
- 5:06If I rotate it, how am I going to land like this or like this?
- 5:12I'm going to land the first way and a 20 foot jump could have
- 5:15been a maybe 22 foot jump. All right, so you check you
- 5:20can't stop rotation. Rotation is going to happen.
- 5:24All right. If I throw a ball down the end
- 5:26of the shroom, I throw it a couple miles an hour off my
- 5:29hands. Whatever it is, it's immediately
- 5:31going to start tumbling gravity. Some people say I like the word
- 5:34rotation because I know it's hot.
- 5:37You know, it explains a little bit more how it tumbles down and
- 5:40so on. OK, so I can delay the onset of
- 5:43rotation by cheating. I use the word cheating a lot.
- 5:46It's not cheating, but it's it's fine using signs to find a way
- 5:50to assist you. So if you cut your body in half,
- 5:54left half, right half, but now just cut it from here to here,
- 5:59this quadrant of sagittal, if you cut it in half right and
- 6:02left, it's a left sagittal plane, a right sagittal plane,
- 6:05front plane, back plane, lower plane, upper plane, all those
- 6:09work together and in technique. And that's why technique is hard
- 6:14because you got to everyone is doing it.
- 6:16Every plane is doing a different movement.
- 6:18You got to blend that all you got to use motor learning in
- 6:22your, in your central nervous system to develop that.
- 6:25But regardless, I got a little too wordy.
- 6:29This has to stop here. And it keeps you perpendicular
- 6:32as you leave the ground instead of having your CG or center of
- 6:36mass out in front of you. OK, so immediate deceleration in
- 6:41rotation, excellent and correct Sprint mechanics need #3 need to
- 6:48be established going down the runway.
- 6:51Not good Sprint mechanics, perfect Sprint mechanics.
- 6:55And if you don't know what they that is, get Tom to Les's book.
- 6:59I can go into that, but I would spend the whole day talking
- 7:02about correct Sprint mechanics and that's we can't do that
- 7:05right now. I want I need to get on to the
- 7:07long jump for you guys. You must know every coach, throw
- 7:12coach, jump coach, distance coach, Sprint coach, hurdle
- 7:15coach. Must know in track and field,
- 7:18excellent Sprint mechanic because it's applicable to every
- 7:21event across the board. All right, the Sprint mechanics
- 7:24are off coming down the runway in the lung jump.
- 7:28Can you jump? Yeah, of course you can still
- 7:30jump. Are you going to maximize what
- 7:32your capabilities are? No, it's not going to happen.
- 7:35It's not going to happen. OK, That's a critical component.
- 7:38All right? Anybody that thinks you're
- 7:41sprinting just one component of a million on your toes, it's
- 7:45voodoo. You don't Sprint on your toes,
- 7:48you land on the ball of the foot.
- 7:50There's a million other things. Don't get me wrong, this is not
- 7:53just the one component, but a lot of people say get up on your
- 7:56toes. No, you land on the ball of your
- 7:59foot on a stroke there with your foot right underneath you.
- 8:06As your body passes over it, the heel will hit the ground.
- 8:11You'll continue to move in a linear direction, straight
- 8:13direction, and you're going to stretch reflex.
- 8:16The foot comes off the ground naturally.
- 8:19If any one of your sprinters, I'm just tansing it off here a
- 8:23little bit on sprinting. If any one of your sprinters
- 8:26saying I'm trying to lift my knees and pull my foot through,
- 8:31totally wrong, Totally wrong. Do not tell your sprinters to
- 8:38lift their knees. Tell them to lift their hips.
- 8:42If you lift your hip and sprinting again, this is just a
- 8:46couple components. I could talk for days on it.
- 8:49If you lift your hip, watch. See my hip lift my hip.
- 8:55I'm I'm kind of saying my glute, my upper thigh and so on in this
- 9:00area. I'm lifting my hip.
- 9:02Did my knee come up? It did.
- 9:05Now watch, if I lift my knee, this could possibly happen.
- 9:09I lift my knee. Did my hip come up?
- 9:11No. You run with an undulation of
- 9:14the hips. You Sprint with an undulation of
- 9:17the hips. Undulation means movement back
- 9:19and forth around and this kind of thing.
- 9:22OK, All right. You're looking and and and some
- 9:27people say this is a little spooky.
- 9:29It's not spooky. It's just basic.
- 9:31When you stand up as a little kid on a bicycle, I learned this
- 9:35by stealing fruit from the neighborhood lady.
- 9:37You know, I'd steal her apple off a tree and I'd get on my
- 9:40bike and I'd be pedaling 100 miles an hour because she's
- 9:42chasing me. And I'm thinking, man, I'm
- 9:44moving fast. I'm standing up.
- 9:46What am I doing when I'm standing up on that bicycle?
- 9:48We were wild in the 50s, You know, we were nuts.
- 9:51But I'm, I'm undulating my hips. I'm pushing my hips down.
- 9:55I think I said it the other day in one of the lectures.
- 9:57Jessica Ennis at London wins the Olympic gold medal in the
- 10:03Hepathlon, 20 minutes yellow as her coach.
- 10:05Good friend of mine and she runs 2256 in the heptathlon 2256,
- 10:11two, 100 meters quick. So we chatted after whatever she
- 10:15goes, he goes. Yeah, I used the bicycle
- 10:17training quite a bit. She runs, gets tall on a
- 10:20bicycle. It's the same motion.
- 10:22It's the same cyclical motion as Sprint.
- 10:26OK, so that's the secondary introduction.
- 10:29Here comes the simplicity, and I'm going to break it down to
- 10:31seven points. Posture at the start is
- 10:34critical. Let me go a little further.
- 10:36Should you stand here and start? Should you walk into it or let's
- 10:42say that little electric outlet is your mark or should you run
- 10:47into it? I don't care.
- 10:49I don't care what you do. Every one of those is good as
- 10:52long as your posture is head up, chest up.
- 10:56So if I walk into it and I'm going to take off my left, my
- 11:00left foot, I'm going to take off my left foot.
- 11:03Your left foot is this foot that pushes down.
- 11:07The first step is with the opposite step.
- 11:10OK, so if your athlete is left footed, take off, his or her
- 11:16left foot will be on the take off mark.
- 11:19I'll show you how to measure that later.
- 11:20All right, on the take off mark in the first step is the right.
- 11:24OK, so if you walk into it and I'm going to take off my left,
- 11:28I'll hit here and then go from there.
- 11:31Clear, simple. There's nothing to everybody can
- 11:33understand that there's science based there.
- 11:35Why? Because you're applying forces
- 11:37straight down which propels you in this direction.
- 11:39Simple #2 Simple. The first movement, we talked
- 11:45about this again, the 1st movement out of the back has to
- 11:49be correct. I did this before in one of the
- 11:53lectures, but I'll do it again in case you weren't there. 2
- 11:55tops. Both of them spin.
- 12:00That wasn't so good. Both of them spin pretty good.
- 12:05I was in a toy store looking for something for my granddaughter
- 12:08and I saw these in Santa Barbara for 395.
- 12:11I said this is a great teaching tool.
- 12:13All right, 2 tops. I'm going to take the first top,
- 12:16blue top, whatever call it doesn't matter, and I'm going to
- 12:19start it and spin it. I'm going to try to spin it very
- 12:22smooth without a mutation, without a wobble.
- 12:26OK, what? You want a discus to go out of
- 12:28your hand. You want it to go out very
- 12:29smooth and rotating this way. OK, the earth is spinning on its
- 12:34axis right now. Can you imagine if we're
- 12:35spinning on a on a wobble, A mutation?
- 12:38We'd be all over the place. We've fallen out of the chairs
- 12:41right now. All right, so I'm going to start
- 12:42this puppy, and that's pretty good, pretty smooth.
- 12:46OK, I'm going to start this one now.
- 12:49After that one watch. Why did it stop?
- 12:56Why did it stop before the first one?
- 12:59It started after the first one. The first one's still going and
- 13:03this guy stops sooner. Why?
- 13:07This started incorrectly. This started with a wobble, A
- 13:12notation, whatever. OK, if the first movement in any
- 13:16skill, In this case, the long jump.
- 13:21In this case, the long jump, head up, chest up, great.
- 13:25All right, good posture with the arms, good position with the
- 13:29arms, and your first move out, you're dead.
- 13:33You're dead in the water, Absolutely dead in the water.
- 13:37You can jump, but it's not going to be a good jump.
- 13:40It's not going to maximize what your capabilities are.
- 13:43Watch the first step out needs to be like this and then I'll
- 13:46explain it. I'm taking off my left leg, so
- 13:49this is, I'll put the paper down.
- 13:51That's going to be my mark, you know, ballpark thing and I'll
- 13:54walk into it. That's all it is.
- 13:59That's the demonstration part that I was telling you about.
- 14:01That's all it is. Watch it again.
- 14:06Not bad for 74 years old. I think it just hurt my
- 14:09Achilles. No, I'm kidding.
- 14:12All right? Now you show the athlete that.
- 14:16How do you do that? He does it.
- 14:17He doesn't do it right. All right?
- 14:19Makes a mistake, whatever. Make make adjustments verbally.
- 14:22They still don't get it. Here's how you explain it.
- 14:27I come up here so you can see a little bit better.
- 14:30Punt step. Somebody should have taught the
- 14:33Green Bay Packers to punt step because my 49ers blocked that
- 14:38kick and my 49ers kicked you guys butt.
- 14:40I love that. You guys don't love that.
- 14:43OK. But anyway, the punt step, I
- 14:47named it the punt step because it's just like a football guy
- 14:51punting. If you're going to punt a
- 14:52football, let's say I'm going to kick with my right foot.
- 14:56Why? I'll do it this way.
- 14:58I'll come from this side. Watch my left leg.
- 15:00Just watch my left leg work. No, that was the take off in the
- 15:06long jump. If I'm going to punt a football
- 15:08with my right foot, watch my left leg work.
- 15:12Wait a minute. Why am I doing that wrong?
- 15:17Oh, there it is. There it is.
- 15:18There it is. OK, All right, watch.
- 15:20Watch the left leg. See where it stops.
- 15:23See where it stops? Right there.
- 15:25The knee is right over the left foot.
- 15:28I can do it up here, so maybe you can see it a little bit
- 15:30better. The knee is right over the left
- 15:34foot. It's not in front of the left
- 15:36foot. It's not behind it.
- 15:38It's right over it if you draw a line.
- 15:42Can we run that again and stop her at the moment she puts her
- 15:51her foot down in the take off, right, A little bit more?
- 15:58Well, that's good. That's good.
- 16:00Yeah. All right.
- 16:01You see where the knee is? You see where her knee is?
- 16:05It's not in front of the toe. It's right over the toe.
- 16:08Now this is the take off. We're talking about the start,
- 16:11but that's the same principle. Go ahead and play it on.
- 16:17That's all right there. The knee stayed right there.
- 16:20If the knee passes through, you can't delay.
- 16:25You can't delay the rotation, can't delay the onset of
- 16:30rotation. OK, So when an athlete starts
- 16:34out of the back, just for argument's sake, he or she is
- 16:36starting now with a standing start.
- 16:39Watch the start. OK?
- 16:44They're not doing it very well. All right, so your instruction
- 16:48is this. Push the left foot or whatever
- 16:51the front foot is. Push it straight down.
- 16:54Don't lean and push back. Don't push up.
- 16:58Push the foot straight down into the ground as hard as you want
- 17:03with as much force as you want, OK, But do not allow the knee to
- 17:10pass over that plane. So that limits you to a certain
- 17:14extent. The stronger you are, the more
- 17:16force you can apply. But because you're not allowed
- 17:19to push this long, a lot of people push long and out of
- 17:22position. I think coach, that's real
- 17:24powerful. It's not it's it is powerful,
- 17:27but it puts you in a bad position.
- 17:29All right, Is that clear? Is that understandable?
- 17:32So I'm standing here, just watch my left knee here in this
- 17:36position, and I take off and what that does, it starts me
- 17:41correctly, it starts my body in motion correctly and it makes
- 17:46the first Step 2 feet, 6 inches, 8, three feet, 5 inches,
- 17:51whatever, consistent, it's always going to be the same.
- 17:55And what isn't that important at the board so that we're not over
- 17:59the board and so on. So what?
- 18:00Simple. It's simple, how many of you,
- 18:03and I bet you, many of you raise your hands can watch a long
- 18:07jumper and watch the 1st 2 steps of that long jumper and look and
- 18:11say this is going to be a good jump or the the ditch staff side
- 18:16and say hey, he's in trouble. Maybe he'll make adjustments
- 18:19coming down the wrong way, but they started improperly.
- 18:22How many of see that good that first couple steps out, right?
- 18:26That's a good feeling, isn't it? When you're sitting up there and
- 18:27sitting eating your popcorn, say, OK, this is going to be a
- 18:30good day. You know, something might
- 18:33happen, something might screw up it.
- 18:35Everybody on that. All right, look at that.
- 18:37We're through #1 and #2 all we're talking about is posture
- 18:40and then the punch step. Good.
- 18:44All right, speed of movement on. Then let's just finish up on the
- 18:48punch step. How fast you come out of the
- 18:51back is totally unimportant. Do it correctly.
- 18:56Maybe later on as they become even more experienced at it,
- 18:59better at it. The speed out of the back is
- 19:01correct. Was Carl Lewis a pretty good
- 19:03long jumper? He was decent, won four Olympic
- 19:06gold medals, right? All right, watch him on video.
- 19:09He almost walks coming out of the back on the 1st 2 steps.
- 19:13You don't have to be fast. You have to be correct.
- 19:18Now, if you're not carrying enough speed, this is a
- 19:21coaching. This is adaptation of coaching.
- 19:23If the athlete is doing all this but only jumping 20 feet for
- 19:27argument's sake, and you know he's not carrying as much speed
- 19:30at the moment of takeoff and he's going from six left, how do
- 19:33you get more speed? How did the back come faster?
- 19:36No, make sure you kept correct. Instead of 6 left, go to seven
- 19:40left. Or maybe go to 8 left or
- 19:42something like that, but make sure it's correct.
- 19:45Makes sense? Simple.
- 19:47OK. Hey gang, Mike Cunningham here.
- 19:50Hey, I hope you enjoyed this episode of the Guild 1918
- 19:54Project series. It's really my mission, my
