- 0:00Good morning everyone, and welcome to Morning Medical with Dr.
- 0:03Chow.
- 0:04I am your host, Dr.
- 0:06Chi-Ming Chow, and today, we have some critical updates on a recent health concern that has
- 0:12been making headlines.
- 0:14Our first story revolves around a significant contamination issue affecting plant-based milks
- 0:19in Canada.
- 0:23The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has identified a recent Listeria contamination in
- 0:29several plant-based milks that originated from a facility in Pickering, Ontario.
- 0:34This contamination occurred on a dedicated production line at Joriki, a third-party
- 0:39beverage packaging plant used by Danone Canada, a major manufacturer of plant-based milk
- 0:44products.
- 0:46According to the agency, the production line has been completely disassembled, and an
- 0:51ongoing inspection is in progress at the facility.
- 0:55The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed eighteen cases of listeriosis linked
- 1:01to this contamination.
- 1:03The affected products include Silk brand almond milk, coconut milk, almond-coconut milk, and
- 1:09oat milk, as well as Great Value brand almond milk.
- 1:13These cases have been reported in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and Nova Scotia, with thirteen
- 1:19hospitalizations and, unfortunately, two deaths.
- 1:23The Ontario health ministry has confirmed that both deaths occurred in Ontario.
- 1:30This is a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with foodborne illnesses,
- 1:34even in products that many consider to be healthier alternatives.
- 1:39The recall for these plant-based milks was initially issued on July eighth.
- 1:45Health experts have indicated that Listeria can make individuals sick up to two months after
- 1:50they have consumed contaminated products.
- 1:53The affected products have best-before dates up to and including October fourth and contain the
- 1:59number 7825 in the product code.
- 2:02It is crucial to check your products if you have any of these brands at home.
- 2:07In a statement released on Wednesday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency emphasized that
- 2:13no production on the affected line will resume until all necessary corrective measures are
- 2:18implemented and the agency is satisfied that any contamination has been identified and
- 2:23eliminated.
- 2:24Danone Canada and Joriki Inc.
- 2:26are actively participating in the ongoing food safety investigation and are implementing
- 2:31enhanced safety and production protocols to prevent future incidents.
- 2:37This situation underscores the importance of rigorous food safety standards and the need for
- 2:42immediate action when a contamination is detected.
- 2:45It is a reminder that manufacturers and regulatory bodies must work closely to ensure
- 2:50the safety of consumers.
- 2:52If you have any of the recalled products, it is advised to return them to the place of purchase
- 2:56or dispose of them appropriately.
- 2:59In other significant health news, more than seventy percent of oral health-care providers
- 3:04in Canada are now participating in the federal Canadian Dental Care Plan.
- 3:10Health Minister Mark Holland stated that he is 'very convinced' that almost all oral
- 3:16health-care providers will be on board with the program within the next several months.
- 3:21The Canadian Dental Care Plan, which began on May first, has already provided dental care to
- 3:27nearly four hundred fifty thousand Canadians.
- 3:29This federal initiative aims to improve access to dental services for those who might
- 3:34otherwise find it financially out of reach.
- 3:38The plan has been particularly beneficial for low-income families, seniors, and children, who
- 3:45are often the most vulnerable when it comes to dental health.
- 3:51Health Canada announced on Wednesday that the program's uptake has exceeded expectations.
- 3:56The participation rate of oral health-care providers is a key metric of the program's
- 4:01success, and the current figures are highly promising.
- 4:05Minister Holland emphasized that the government is committed to making dental care accessible
- 4:10to all Canadians and is working diligently to ensure that no one is left behind.
- 4:16The Canadian Dental Care Plan covers a range of services, including routine check-ups,
- 4:21cleanings, fillings, and even more complex procedures such as root canals and extractions.
- 4:27By subsidizing these essential services, the program aims to reduce the long-term health
- 4:32complications that can arise from untreated dental issues, such as infections,
- 4:37cardiovascular problems, and diabetes.
- 4:41Minister Holland also addressed some of the challenges faced during the rollout of the
- 4:46program.
- 4:47He acknowledged that there have been logistical hurdles and concerns about the adequacy of
- 4:51funding.
- 4:52However, he reassured the public that these issues are being addressed and that the
- 4:57government is committed to continuous improvement of the plan.
- 5:01One of the significant advantages of the Canadian Dental Care Plan is its inclusivity.
- 5:06The program is designed to be accessible to a wide range of Canadians, irrespective of their
- 5:12income level or geographic location.
- 5:15This inclusivity is crucial, given that dental health disparities often mirror broader social
- 5:20inequalities.
- 5:22Public health experts have lauded the program as a landmark initiative in Canada's health
- 5:27care system.
- 5:29They argue that by addressing dental health, the government is not only improving individual
- 5:34health outcomes but also reducing the overall burden on the health care system.
- 5:39Untreated dental issues can lead to emergency room visits and hospitalizations, which are far
- 5:45more costly than preventive care.
- 5:48As the Canadian Dental Care Plan continues to expand, it will be essential to monitor its
- 5:53impact on public health closely.
- 5:55The program's success could serve as a model for other health initiatives aimed at reducing
- 5:59disparities and improving access to care.
- 6:02For now, the high participation rate among oral health-care providers is a promising sign that
- 6:08the program is on the right track.
- 6:11Now, let us shift our focus to an exciting development in the health care sector, courtesy
- 6:16of Amazon.
- 6:18At the recent 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival, Amazon unveiled several ways they are leveraging
- 6:24artificial intelligence to transform health care for both patients and providers.
- 6:29First up, Amazon is empowering more efficient and connected health visits.
- 6:34During health care visits, the need for clinicians to capture detailed notes often
- 6:39diverts attention away from meaningful patient-clinician conversations.
- 6:44Amazon is addressing this issue with HealthScribe, a HIPAA-eligible service that
- 6:48uses generative artificial intelligence to automatically create clinical notes from
- 6:54doctor-patient conversations.
- 6:56The AI-generated notes cite every detail directly from the recorded conversation
- 7:01transcript for transparency.
- 7:03Clinicians can quickly review and approve these notes before entering them into health records,
- 7:08ensuring both time savings and accuracy.
- 7:12This technology is being integrated into health care software, resulting in more efficient,
- 7:17collaborative, and satisfying visits for both clinicians and patients.
- 7:23Next, Amazon is speeding up the process of identifying new medications.
- 7:27Traditionally, bringing a new drug to market is a time-consuming and costly endeavor, often
- 7:32taking 10 to 15 years.
- 7:34Amazon Web Services, or AWS, is helping life sciences organizations accelerate this process
- 7:41by providing researchers with access to the latest generative artificial intelligence
- 7:45advancements.
- 7:46For example, AWS has collaborated with EvolutionaryScale, a frontier AI research lab.
- 7:53Their collaboration involves making EvolutionaryScale’s ESM3, a state-of-the-art
- 7:57language model family, available on AWS.
- 8:00This enables researchers to create entirely new proteins that have not existed in nature,
- 8:05potentially reducing the cost and time required to bring new therapeutics to market by years
- 8:11and millions of dollars.
- 8:13Amazon is also making the process of filling and processing prescriptions easier.
- 8:18Amazon Pharmacy leverages generative artificial intelligence to fill prescriptions more quickly
- 8:23and accurately, make customer service faster and more helpful, and ensure the right
- 8:28quantities of medications are stocked for customers.
- 8:31They are also working on AI applications that provide more transparent pricing on
- 8:35prescription medications, allowing customers to shop for the best price from the comfort of
- 8:40their own homes.
- 8:41This eliminates the need for customers to wait in long lines at the pharmacy and ensures they
- 8:46get the medications they need conveniently.
- 8:50Providing accurate prescription medications is another area where Amazon is making strides.
- 8:56While most prescriptions today are sent electronically, they can still contain
- 9:00confusing or inconsistent instructions.
- 9:03To address this, Amazon Pharmacy uses AWS Textract, a computer vision service that
- 9:10automatically extracts printed text, handwriting, and data from virtually any
- 9:15document to accurately capture prescription details.
- 9:19This makes the directions on prescriptions more clear and structured, allowing pharmacists to
- 9:24fill medications quickly and accurately while reducing potential errors.
- 9:29By combining cutting-edge AI with professional pharmacist expertise, Amazon Pharmacy can
- 9:35process orders 90% faster than traditional methods, significantly reducing the chance of
- 9:40mistakes.
- 9:42Lastly, Amazon is reaching more people through strategic partnerships.
- 9:46They are committed to developing artificial intelligence responsibly, with a people-centric
- 9:51approach that prioritizes education, science, and customers.
- 9:55Amazon Health Services and AWS collaborate with leading health care systems, insurers, and life
- 10:01sciences companies to explore how AI can enhance patient experiences and outcomes.
- 10:08They focus on using machine learning to uncover valuable patient insights while ensuring
- 10:13stringent privacy and security protocols.
- 10:16By automating tedious administrative tasks, health care professionals can focus more on
- 10:22patient care.
- 10:23Whether through AWS cloud services or Amazon Health Service solutions, Amazon aims to
- 10:29democratize AI capabilities for the health care industry, ultimately making it easier for
- 10:34patients to get and stay healthy.
- 10:37That wraps up today’s episode of Morning Medical with Dr.
- 10:41Chow.
- 10:42From plant-based milk contamination to the transformative potential of artificial
- 10:46intelligence in health care, we have covered some critical updates.
