- 0:02Speaker 1: Twins were that close, but no cigar against the Dodgers,
- 0:05Speaker 1: losing all three games this week. A sweep at Target
- 0:08Speaker 1: Field a four to three loss on Wednesday finished the
- 0:11Speaker 1: job for Los Angeles. We'll talk about that. We'll talk
- 0:14Speaker 1: about what the GM and front office should do with
- 0:18Speaker 1: this team going forward. We'll talk about Marco Roy's arrival
- 0:22Speaker 1: for the Twins, bullpen, and Luke Keishol to get reps
- 0:25Speaker 1: in the outfield, as well as a weekend series preview
- 0:28Speaker 1: of the MLB worst Colorado Rockies coming to town. This
- 0:31Speaker 1: is Twin City's Territory. You're Minnesota Twins podcast here on
- 0:34Speaker 1: the Foul Territory Network. I am Zach Pearce of the Athletic,
- 0:38Speaker 1: joined as always by Dan Hayes, the Athletics, Minnesota Twins
- 0:41Speaker 1: beat writer, and Tyler Duffy, longtime Major leaguer and former
- 0:45Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins Guys. Only one game since we talked to
- 0:48Speaker 1: you last on Wednesday. The Twins were off On Thursday show,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Hey Otani outdueling Joe Ryan as the Dodgers win four
- 0:55Speaker 1: to three to finish off the sweep. Sweep is not good,
- 1:00Speaker 1: but the Dodgers are very good. So the fact that
- 1:03Speaker 1: two of the three games were competitive. I'm looking for
- 1:06Speaker 1: silver linings here. The one that wasn't competitives. Yeah, the
- 1:10Speaker 1: one that wasn't we thought they were right, And the
- 1:12Speaker 1: one that wasn't competitive, we probably could have seen it coming.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It was a It was a bullpen game with including
- 1:18Speaker 1: Austin Violth's debut that that didn't go so well, and
- 1:20Speaker 1: then Taylor Rodgers in the ninth was sort of just
- 1:23Speaker 1: in there to finish off the game regardless. So it
- 1:25Speaker 1: was a blowout on paper, but probably uh, never great
- 1:28Speaker 1: odds with the Twins in that one. They slide back
- 1:31Speaker 1: to six games under five hundred DAN three to eight
- 1:33Speaker 1: and forty four. Opportunity to sort of to kind of,
- 1:36Speaker 1: you know, get right back in at this weekend if
- 1:37Speaker 1: they can take advantage of of of Colorado being in town.
- 1:41Speaker 1: But overall, what were your takeaways from the three games
- 1:44Speaker 1: at target Field.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny you said silver linings because my lead
- 1:48Speaker 2: to my story after the third game was there's no
- 1:52Speaker 2: silver linings, only difficult to absorb losses. And I feel
- 1:55Speaker 2: like that's kind of what you have to take away from.
- 1:58Speaker 2: The Twins played really well Monday, They played really well
- 2:02Speaker 2: on Wednesday, they were in both games. In both they
- 2:06Speaker 2: came back from early deficits. And actually they came back
- 2:09Speaker 2: from early deficits in all three games, because even on
- 2:12Speaker 2: the Tuesday game they were trailing early and Carotene hit
- 2:16Speaker 2: the home run and to tie the game. And you know,
- 2:21Speaker 2: they came back from deficits all three days. They played
- 2:24Speaker 2: pretty good defense, and the Dodgers were better. And that's
- 2:28Speaker 2: the harsh reality is. You know, you played one of
- 2:34Speaker 2: your better series of the year and two of those
- 2:36Speaker 2: three games and you just weren't as good as the
- 2:39Speaker 2: other team. And Mookie Betts had some spectacular defense at
- 2:42Speaker 2: shortstop all series, in particularly he in particular, he took
- 2:47Speaker 2: two hits away in the finale, including what would have
- 2:51Speaker 2: been a two run single for Ryan Kreidler, you know,
- 2:54Speaker 2: and that was a big difference. And I talked to
- 2:57Speaker 2: Anthony Bonda afterwards, and you know, Bond of pitch for
- 3:00Speaker 2: the Dodgers for the last two years. He got his
- 3:02Speaker 2: World Series ringing from them on Monday, and he said,
- 3:06Speaker 2: doesn't take away from the good we did it, doesn't.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You know, we played well. You saw a lot of
- 3:11Speaker 2: good signs. There's a lot of things to be positive about.
- 3:13Speaker 2: But in the end, it's three losses and it's a
- 3:17Speaker 2: good reminder of where we want to go and what
- 3:19Speaker 2: we want to do there are I think this team
- 3:24Speaker 2: will come out of this knowing that they played well
- 3:28Speaker 2: enough right there to be in those games and that
- 3:31Speaker 2: you know, if that ball gets through with the Chridler hit,
- 3:34Speaker 2: they they take the lead and maybe they can hold it.
- 3:38Speaker 2: And I think they saw their back end relievers all
- 3:41Speaker 2: come in in spots and keep them in the games.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And it's crazy. Joe Ryan had a four hit, three
- 3:50Speaker 2: run inning where there were a few bleeders on him,
- 3:53Speaker 2: and but Joe Ryan doesn't typically surrender three run leads
- 3:57Speaker 2: as quickly as he.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Did that day.
- 3:59Speaker 2: So I think the takeaway is they can they can
- 4:03Speaker 2: look at it and go all right, there's a lot
- 4:04Speaker 2: of good stuff here. But again the reality is there's
- 4:07Speaker 2: three losses, so got to clean it up and get
- 4:09Speaker 2: better for sure.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yet three innings of scoreless relief from the bullpen in
- 4:15Speaker 1: both of the one run losses Monday and Wednesday, So obviously,
- 4:21Speaker 1: at the end of the day, the standings are the standings, Tyler.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But I have to imagine for a clubhouse that you know,
- 4:27Speaker 1: like it's got to be a little brutal to be
- 4:30Speaker 1: so absolute about things when you're inside the room. I
- 4:33Speaker 1: do think there are things that they can take away
- 4:35Speaker 1: from the series that feel more positive than not.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Oh for sure. I mean you were in those games
- 4:42Speaker 4: for two of them.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Anyway. You know, a lot of guys did their jobs.
- 4:46Speaker 4: I you know, we brought up Mooki, he was kind
- 4:49Speaker 4: of on the hitting side, was a non factor for
- 4:52Speaker 4: the first couple of games, which I think that's a
- 4:54Speaker 4: big set, Like we kept one of their guys at Bay.
- 4:57Speaker 3: You know, show hate did his thing.
- 4:58Speaker 4: But you know, it's just they're the best team in baseball,
- 5:02Speaker 4: you know, record wise, I'm not exactly sure, but payroll wise,
- 5:06Speaker 4: you know, MVP wise, whatever you want to call it.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Like there, they are the gold standard right now. And
- 5:11Speaker 4: to be able to hang with them, I think is
- 5:13Speaker 4: something I think Shelty probably reinforced to those guys. You know,
- 5:17Speaker 4: I doubt they had a meeting or anything like that.
- 5:19Speaker 4: But it's like you leave that series like, yeah, you
- 5:21Speaker 4: got blown out in the middle, but hey, it's like
- 5:23Speaker 4: we were with that team all week.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Our guys did their jobs. We needed to. We scored
- 5:28Speaker 3: enough runs to win games.
- 5:30Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Obviously the first I think it was two to one
- 5:32Speaker 4: or three to one was the final. But you know,
- 5:34Speaker 4: other than that, like you showed up, you know, and
- 5:37Speaker 4: you did a job, and the other one I thought
- 5:40Speaker 4: of even listening to some tough yesterday again, the fans
- 5:44Speaker 4: packed that place for that last game, which tells me,
- 5:48Speaker 4: you know, yes, they were doing things to get people
- 5:50Speaker 4: in there. They just want something to show up for,
- 5:53Speaker 4: you know. And and to our point, we talked so
- 5:55Speaker 4: much about the trade deadline and things like that, like
- 5:58Speaker 4: some little in firing, something happened, like you never know,
- 6:03Speaker 4: the fans might decide to show up, you know, pack
- 6:05Speaker 4: that place. Granted it's not gonna be a sellout every night,
- 6:08Speaker 4: but more than they have been. You know, that place
- 6:10Speaker 4: was jumping, and several people, you know, I feel like
- 6:13Speaker 4: I heard a few people mentioning the fact that there's
- 6:15Speaker 4: just energy in that stadium, and you know, obviously it's
- 6:17Speaker 4: show hey, But to that point, the fans showed up
- 6:20Speaker 4: and they were there to support the guys. You know,
- 6:23Speaker 4: whether it was fully for them or not, they were
- 6:25Speaker 4: in the building anyway, and so I think that was
- 6:28Speaker 4: something to take as a silver lining, if you will
- 6:31Speaker 4: for the whole series, Like, yeah, we lost, but we
- 6:33Speaker 4: also packed that stadium for one of those games.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Some season ticket holders were definitely taking advantage of the
- 6:39Speaker 1: of the new generous offer aid in.
- 6:42Speaker 2: There were one hundred five thousand people out there for
- 6:45Speaker 2: the three games, first sell out of the season on Wednesday.
- 6:48Speaker 2: The Tuesday crowd was announced at thirty. It was probably
- 6:51Speaker 2: a little sparse because there was so much rain. Just
- 6:54Speaker 2: another ugly day. And but I mean they're going to
- 6:59Speaker 2: be out there this week against Colorado two. There's a
- 7:01Speaker 2: ludicrous concert tonight Firon Bucks and Bobblehead on Sad.
- 7:05Speaker 3: You haven't heard yet, So Ludacris is coming, all.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Right, breaking Ludacris be at the game tonight now. So
- 7:16Speaker 2: you know there's a there's a lot of energy in
- 7:18Speaker 2: the building, without question, and guys feed off that for sure,
- 7:21Speaker 2: especially when you consider what it was like for seventeen
- 7:24Speaker 2: April home games when that was nice and quiet and cold.
- 7:30Speaker 1: The Twins were obviously tearing it up offensively on the
- 7:34Speaker 1: road trip Texas and Arizona fifty runs in the six
- 7:37Speaker 1: games that came to a screeching halt. This week, we
- 7:40Speaker 1: put that stat on the on the screen last week
- 7:45Speaker 1: about basically everybody hit over five hundred in Texas and Arizona. Right,
- 7:50Speaker 1: the stats from these three games not nearly as good.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Tristan Gray two hits and four at bats. That was
- 7:57Speaker 1: the best best batting average for the Twins. Austin Martin
- 7:59Speaker 1: had three hits in seven at bats. Everybody else was
- 8:04Speaker 1: two fifty or worse in the three games. Obviously small
- 8:06Speaker 1: sample size, and obviously Dan that's what happens when you're
- 8:09Speaker 1: facing a team with two of the best starters in
- 8:11Speaker 1: the league and a great bullpen.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it's funny. They faced some good pitching
- 8:16Speaker 2: in Texas. They really did. Mackenzie Gore had another good start,
- 8:20Speaker 2: I believe yesterday. Like there, Kumara Rocker was in there
- 8:25Speaker 2: and he was on a roll. So, I you know,
- 8:28Speaker 2: I don't know what goes into it. But also you
- 8:31Speaker 2: can't keep up scoring fifty runs over six games. That
- 8:34Speaker 2: pace is a little absurd. But yeah, the Dodgers did
- 8:38Speaker 2: a great job. I mean, sho Tani, they were one
- 8:41Speaker 2: run If Brither's hit goes through, that's a season high
- 8:44Speaker 2: five earned runs for show Hey Show Hayes worst start
- 8:47Speaker 2: so far been four and runs didn't look like he
- 8:50Speaker 2: and Dalton Rushing were quite on the same page.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yeah, that was fun to watch, honestly.
- 8:57Speaker 2: You know, I didn't have a view of that, and
- 8:59Speaker 2: I because I'm not watching the game. I just heard
- 9:02Speaker 2: after one of his bats. I you can hear the
- 9:04Speaker 2: bat rack when when somebody gets upset and flings their
- 9:08Speaker 2: bat in there. And I heard the bat rack one
- 9:11Speaker 2: time with Dalton Russian on on that particular day. But yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 2: you know, they they ran into a juggernaut. The Dodgers
- 9:20Speaker 2: are are pretty good, and you know, I mean, look
- 9:24Speaker 2: I like on their end on the pitching side, I
- 9:27Speaker 2: thought the Twins, I mean, Tuesday was just sort of
- 9:31Speaker 2: a white flag. Joe Ryan's sick and has to get
- 9:36Speaker 2: it moved back, and you bring up a guy who
- 9:38Speaker 2: you really don't know, like you just signed him a
- 9:40Speaker 2: week ago, Austin Both There's gonna still be until until
- 9:44Speaker 2: they acquire guys. This this cycle will continue for the
- 9:48Speaker 2: rest of the season without question, where we're gonna have
- 9:51Speaker 2: nameless guys come in and pitch six innings because it's
- 9:55Speaker 2: just how it works. You you grab people off the wire.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Justin Lawrence got picked up claimed by Washington, whose bullpen
- 10:02Speaker 2: is in war shaped than the Twins, and I believe
- 10:05Speaker 2: the Twins is like twenty ninth or thirtieth and in baseball,
- 10:09Speaker 2: So like that just gives you an idea like how
- 10:12Speaker 2: hard up for pitching teams are, and so we'll see
- 10:15Speaker 2: more of these games. But anyways, Zebi looked good on Monday.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I thought Zebbi made the one mistake really to to
- 10:24Speaker 2: Freddy Freeman the cutter that didn't cut. And then Joe
- 10:27Speaker 2: Ryan really rebounded himself because he gave up the four
- 10:32Speaker 2: and that was after three and An's that looked like
- 10:33Speaker 2: he was on the way out and he salvaged it
- 10:35Speaker 2: and came back with six innings, struck out nine. He
- 10:38Speaker 2: had a good game. So yeah, I don't know. It's
- 10:43Speaker 2: it's a tough series to make heads or tails of
- 10:45Speaker 2: because like you're still just lost. But there's if you're
- 10:51Speaker 2: if you're looking for encouraging signs, if you are looking
- 10:53Speaker 2: for silver linings, there were plenty of them, without question.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Twins still right there. Game and a half out in
- 11:01Speaker 1: the Wildcard, four and a half out in the Central
- 11:03Speaker 1: behind Cleveland and Chicago were in a virtual tie.
- 11:07Speaker 2: At they only lost to half a game in the
- 11:09Speaker 2: Wildcare Race, even though they got swept. That's just how
- 11:12Speaker 2: bad this American League is right now.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Well, with that, we'll take a quick break. Have a

- 11:32Speaker 1: just keep not doing it. I don't know why, but
- 11:35Speaker 1: I almost did. On Wednesday, Dan, after I talked about
- 11:39Speaker 1: maybe attending the Show Hey game, I ended up downtown
- 11:41Speaker 1: for a work thing and I was looking at seakeek
- 11:44Speaker 1: trying to find tickets to the Show Hey game. But
- 11:47Speaker 1: even after first pitch, remarkably expensive and I opted to

- 13:20Speaker 2: Ay on Monday, Word in Houston. Okay, World Cups in
- 13:24Speaker 2: Houston again.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Woa Brazil?
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah oh yeah, yeah, yeah, you want Brazil Japan?
- 13:30Speaker 3: Right?
- 13:30Speaker 2: Fourteen bucks? Yeah yeah, it's only fifteen hundred on seat
- 13:34Speaker 2: geek right now for the buy in rights four days and.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Then no, you don't MLB only Yeah, yeah, don't.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Want to use it again.
- 13:49Speaker 1: So after a confusing series, not confusing, but just a
- 13:56Speaker 1: little bit of depending on how you look at humbling,
- 13:59Speaker 1: but maybe not humbling. We were talking right before we started,
- 14:03Speaker 1: before we record, like what do you do with this
- 14:07Speaker 1: team at the trade deadline? So we decided to make
- 14:10Speaker 1: a segment out of it. We're going to put our
- 14:11Speaker 1: GM hats on, like we talked about buston a lot
- 14:15Speaker 1: on the last show after Jeremy's old came out and
- 14:17Speaker 1: flat out said no plans to trade him. Obviously, Buxton
- 14:22Speaker 1: has quite a bit of say in that as well.
- 14:24Speaker 1: The Athletic just published a top fifty Big Board trade
- 14:28Speaker 1: targets list on our site. You can go check that
- 14:32Speaker 1: out at the Athletic dot com. Twins have four of
- 14:36Speaker 1: the top fifty, including two of the top three in
- 14:39Speaker 1: Buxton and Joe Ryan. Ryan Jeffers is in there at
- 14:42Speaker 1: number fourteen and Trevor Larnick at thirty seven. So the
- 14:46Speaker 1: dilemma here, obviously, the team is thirty eight and forty four.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I don't think a trade or to add to this
- 14:53Speaker 1: team is going to all of a sudden make them
- 14:54Speaker 1: a World Series contender. However, they're also still in the
- 14:57Speaker 1: playoff race. You have a fan base that is teetering
- 15:00Speaker 1: on mutiny if you get rid of any more star players.
- 15:04Speaker 1: But also three of your star players are worth a
- 15:08Speaker 1: huge haul right now, clearly high interest at the deadline,
- 15:12Speaker 1: and you could potentially set your team up very well
- 15:15Speaker 1: for the future. But fans don't want to hear that
- 15:17Speaker 1: right now, probably especially when it comes to Byron Buckston
- 15:19Speaker 1: and Joe Ryan. So let's start with Tyler. What do
- 15:23Speaker 1: you do Tyler with this team as the deadline is
- 15:26Speaker 1: now just over a month away?
- 15:28Speaker 4: I mean, I guess objectively, you know, it's hard to
- 15:32Speaker 4: know clubhouse and all that stuff, you know, and especially
- 15:35Speaker 4: again it's been.
- 15:35Speaker 3: There while, But at the moment, the only one.
- 15:38Speaker 4: That feels safe, I guess would be the right word
- 15:42Speaker 4: is the Jeffers move, only because you know, he went out,
- 15:47Speaker 4: had to have himmate hamate surgery. And you know the
- 15:52Speaker 4: two guys. You know you signed carottenis basically to be
- 15:55Speaker 4: the backup. Well, he's done his job, and Jackson has
- 15:58Speaker 4: slid in perfectly behind him.
- 16:00Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:01Speaker 4: I think the other maybe it was last week they
- 16:03Speaker 4: were combined like three oh eight or something like that,
- 16:05Speaker 4: like they're hitting well, you know, producing Kroteen. He's been
- 16:09Speaker 4: great on the challenges. Like I'm not saying he's expendable,
- 16:13Speaker 4: but of all the guys that you could potentially get
- 16:16Speaker 4: rid of without causing the mutiny, it might be Jeffers.
- 16:21Speaker 3: You know, he's a free agent.
- 16:22Speaker 4: He's gonna leave anyways, if I'm not mistaken. You know,
- 16:27Speaker 4: he's he's not gonna sign back to Minnesota. He's gonna
- 16:30Speaker 4: get a lot of money. You know, they're not going
- 16:32Speaker 4: to give him a big boy deal like I'm sure
- 16:33Speaker 4: he wants. So he's the only one that feels safe
- 16:38Speaker 4: ish to make a move with that wouldn't just completely
- 16:40Speaker 4: burn down the building.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, one let's uh, if I'm the GM, We're
- 16:51Speaker 2: not having this conversation for a month. I'm giving my
- 16:54Speaker 2: team a month. So this is we're gonna do it too.
- 16:56Speaker 1: That's part of it for sure. That's part of it, like, yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 1: who knows where it will be in a month today
- 17:02Speaker 1: as of today.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I mean, you think about it like it's like stocks
- 17:07Speaker 2: and they're going up and down, and you want to
- 17:09Speaker 2: know what direction you were trending when you make that decision.
- 17:13Speaker 2: And there is still so much time on this board
- 17:16Speaker 2: before you have to get to that point and making
- 17:18Speaker 2: decision somewhere around thirty seven days thirty eight days right
- 17:21Speaker 2: now until the August third trade deadline. Last year, trade
- 17:27Speaker 2: deadline was August or it was July thirtieth. The Twins
- 17:29Speaker 2: gave the club till July twenty seventh, and they had
- 17:32Speaker 2: had just like the worst possible series out of the
- 17:37Speaker 2: All Star Break in Colorado, where Chris Paddock gave up
- 17:43Speaker 2: four in the first four batters of the game. It
- 17:46Speaker 2: was four nothing four batters into the game. To do
- 17:50Speaker 2: that should have been like the white flag sign right there, right,
- 17:52Speaker 2: and then they lost two of three to the Dodgers
- 17:55Speaker 2: right after that, But then they won a series and
- 17:56Speaker 2: it was like, oh, maybe hang in Like so, look,
- 18:00Speaker 2: the realistic timeline for this decision being made is July thirtieth, really,
- 18:05Speaker 2: because that gives them about three days at that point.
- 18:08Speaker 2: But I'm just gonna make my prediction right now as
- 18:12Speaker 2: to what they do on August third, and because I
- 18:16Speaker 2: think this team, I don't think anybody separates themselves in
- 18:19Speaker 2: the American League, and I think this team can hang.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Even with the disappointing news that Mickabel had it was
- 18:30Speaker 2: about to have arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, something
- 18:33Speaker 2: we learned the other day. Basically, he will undergo the
- 18:39Speaker 2: knife on to to be determined, and how long he's
- 18:43Speaker 2: out we'll see. I don't know if they'll be lucky
- 18:46Speaker 2: and get the schoobol scope as everybody calls it. Yeah,
- 18:49Speaker 2: but Micabel is looking like he's out for a while,
- 18:52Speaker 2: and that sounds like a very rare combination of not
- 18:54Speaker 2: a lot of damage to schoobls, not a lot of
- 18:57Speaker 2: loose bodies, and schoobol's elbow when they went in. It's
- 19:01Speaker 2: the only thing that kind of you find out when
- 19:02Speaker 2: when they go into mcabel's elbow. Anyways, I think if
- 19:09Speaker 2: I was putting on my a GM hat right now,
- 19:11Speaker 2: at worst, they will mostly stand pat And I know
- 19:14Speaker 2: how how you're right, Zach. There's some exceptionally good talent
- 19:19Speaker 2: on the board and the Athletic did not listen to me.
- 19:21Speaker 2: By the way, Byron Buxton should have been number twelve
- 19:23Speaker 2: hundred because there's twelve hundred players in the league rosters.
- 19:28Speaker 2: They didn't listen to me. They put them number two, and.
- 19:31Speaker 1: It's like the list is most desirable.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Oh, yes, of course who was one? Do you remember
- 19:39Speaker 3: was the schoobal one ahead?
- 19:42Speaker 2: Oh? Who was it was that? I didn't like.
- 19:47Speaker 1: It's Schoobale yep.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Yeah, but uh, you know, at worse, I think they
- 19:55Speaker 2: will like if I was making my prediction right now,
- 19:57Speaker 2: they'll stand pat and h you know, if they're really
- 20:02Speaker 2: in it. And when I say really in it, I
- 20:05Speaker 2: mean if they're one and a half out in the
- 20:07Speaker 2: wild card. It wouldn't shock me to see them add
- 20:11Speaker 2: because I just think Tom Poullad is really motivated to
- 20:14Speaker 2: prove to Byron Buxton that Byron Buxton should want to
- 20:18Speaker 2: be here. I think that he wants to prove to
- 20:21Speaker 2: fans that they should want to be here. I think
- 20:23Speaker 2: he wants to prove to the guys in the clubhouse
- 20:26Speaker 2: they should want to be here and be buying in
- 20:29Speaker 2: And it's what he has told them since before twins Fest.
- 20:34Speaker 2: It's what he said to them on the first day
- 20:36Speaker 2: of spring training. It's what he has told them throughout
- 20:41Speaker 2: the season in private conversations with guys. I believe that
- 20:45Speaker 2: they are partly buying in because I think they think
- 20:48Speaker 2: they have ownership support. I know how deflating it was
- 20:52Speaker 2: for the Clubhouse in twenty twenty four when they only
- 20:55Speaker 2: added Trevor Richards and like, didn't you know they're they
- 21:00Speaker 2: were in a winning position having cut payroll by thirty
- 21:03Speaker 2: million dollars and they didn't add anything, And Tom poul
- 21:07Speaker 2: Ed said that was a misstep after cutting the payroll
- 21:09Speaker 2: was a misstep. So I think if they're in a
- 21:13Speaker 2: spot like this in a month, we'll see them try
- 21:17Speaker 2: to add, which is crazy to me to say that.
- 21:19Speaker 2: And I don't, you know, but they have some they
- 21:22Speaker 2: have some guys. They have enough in the miners to
- 21:25Speaker 2: go and get stuff, So I don't know, it's gonna
- 21:29Speaker 2: be very strange if they buy to me. But also like,
- 21:33Speaker 2: let's see if they're there in a month, because who knows,
- 21:35Speaker 2: the bottom could just drop out. But Bailey over is
- 21:39Speaker 2: throwing a bullpen. I believe today and his next steps
- 21:43Speaker 2: will be determined if he comes in feeling tomorrow and
- 21:45Speaker 2: feeling good tomorrow, so you might get him back somewhere
- 21:50Speaker 2: around after the All Star break. You know, you're hoping
- 21:55Speaker 2: for that, and you're hoping guys keep going in the
- 21:58Speaker 2: direction they are in this offense can carry them.
- 22:02Speaker 1: The Jeffers thing makes a lot of sense now that
- 22:04Speaker 1: you say it, Tyler, Like, if you're gonna lose him anyway, yeah,
- 22:08Speaker 1: it doesn't make a lot of sense. Just keep around, Joe.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Ryan may come down to whether the bottom falls out.
- 22:15Speaker 3: As you say, that's gonna be the tough one. Yeah,
- 22:17Speaker 3: that'll be that'll be the thirtieth move. Yeah for sure.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Maybe, hey, maybe with Jeffers. You know, you know the
- 22:23Speaker 2: team that wants him the worst is the Yankees. They're
- 22:26Speaker 2: reporters like, are sending up Ryan Jeffers, Like there's just
- 22:31Speaker 2: like this bat signal above Gotham in the sky right
- 22:34Speaker 2: now with Ryan Jeffers face on it. But you know,
- 22:37Speaker 2: everybody expects them to make a trade for a prospect.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Who knows. Maybe the Twins ask for something for major
- 22:43Speaker 2: league help coming back in that deal.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Which could always which is just like one for one, yeah, yeah,
- 22:49Speaker 3: an extra arm whoever it is.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And for the record, on the athletics list Byron Buxton
- 22:54Speaker 1: has a little red circle next to the deal.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Joe Ryan has Joe Ryan. Yeah, I think Joe Ryan
- 23:02Speaker 2: doesn't think he'd be traded right now. I don't think
- 23:05Speaker 2: that Joe Ryan expects to be traded, even though it's
- 23:09Speaker 2: one plus and he is at the optimal time right now,
- 23:12Speaker 2: and that does look I understand why there's a little
- 23:14Speaker 2: green Mark Derrett signaling that it could happen, but like
- 23:19Speaker 2: one plus is where you trade a guy with, you know,
- 23:22Speaker 2: because you're not just giving a team a rental for
- 23:24Speaker 2: the rest of the season. You're getting for a year
- 23:26Speaker 2: and a half. But I, you know, I just don't
- 23:28Speaker 2: think the Twins are there as an organization. I maybe
- 23:31Speaker 2: the front office is there, but I think ownership is.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Dan Freeze.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Well, you know what, it was time to Dan Froze
- 23:43Speaker 1: for just a second. But it looks like he was
- 23:45Speaker 1: wrapping up and we have to take a break. Anyway,
- 23:47Speaker 1: We'll be right back. We'll talk about Marco Ria. I
- 23:49Speaker 1: think I said Roya at the beginning of the show.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I apologize to Marco for that. We'll talk about Luke,
- 23:54Speaker 1: Keishael and the Rockies right after this.

- 25:02Speaker 1: With the ever revolving door in the Twins pitching staff
- 25:06Speaker 1: due to injuries and other issues. Another move was made
- 25:09Speaker 1: this week. We mentioned Mickabeles' latest set back with the
- 25:13Speaker 1: arthroscopic surgery coming up. The Twins have added Marco Riah
- 25:17Speaker 1: to the bullpen, and Dan wrote a story on The
- 25:19Speaker 1: Athletic about who he is and what he brings to
- 25:22Speaker 1: the bullpen. Dan, why don't you tell us a little
- 25:23Speaker 1: bit more?
- 25:25Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a fourth rounder for twenty twenty from that draft,
- 25:29Speaker 2: and he was a starter until last year at the
- 25:32Speaker 2: trade deadline. But this is a guy the Twins have
- 25:35Speaker 2: been talking about as possible reliever.
- 25:38Speaker 3: I just looked up.
- 25:38Speaker 2: The last time they mentioned him was November sixth, or
- 25:42Speaker 2: the first time they mentioned him as a bullpen possibility
- 25:44Speaker 2: for this year was November sixth of last year at
- 25:48Speaker 2: the GM meetings in Las Vegas. So he's been on
- 25:51Speaker 2: the radar as this move has been on the radar
- 25:53Speaker 2: for like nine months now or eight months whatever it is.
- 25:56Speaker 2: He might have the best stuff of the potentially it's
- 26:02Speaker 2: it's there. But he's always been a guy that struggled
- 26:06Speaker 2: with walks for his career, mostly as a starter. He
- 26:10Speaker 2: was issuing four walks per nine through last year. He
- 26:13Speaker 2: really kind of plateaued. Once he got to the upper levels.
- 26:16Speaker 2: He was able to succeed even though he was walking
- 26:19Speaker 2: guys in the lower levels, but he really ran into
- 26:21Speaker 2: some issues at Triple A. They decided to put him
- 26:23Speaker 2: in the bullpen last year, even this year in spring,
- 26:27Speaker 2: walking too many guys. First month of the season, walking
- 26:31Speaker 2: too many guys, and finally they said, all right, look,
- 26:34Speaker 2: we gotta fix this. He was throwing six pitches and
- 26:38Speaker 2: trying to maintain six pitches because he's a starter. That's
- 26:42Speaker 2: the it is. So they said, look, your fastball plays up.
- 26:47Speaker 2: It's ninety seven probably with the crowd, it could be
- 26:50Speaker 2: ninety eight ninety nine at target field, and your curve
- 26:54Speaker 2: and your sweeper are electric and they get a lost
- 26:57Speaker 2: swing and miss. So let's focus on the and the
- 27:01Speaker 2: other thing you can do is occasionally with lefties bringing
- 27:04Speaker 2: your change up. But when they said focus on three
- 27:07Speaker 2: pitches and he stopped throwing his cutter, he said everything
- 27:10Speaker 2: went in the right direction. At Triple A, first fifteen
- 27:15Speaker 2: and the third innings eleven walks, nine eighty eight ear
- 27:19Speaker 2: A or nine to ninety eight ear A. Since he
- 27:22Speaker 2: made the switch twenty three and two thirds innings, one walk,
- 27:27Speaker 2: twenty four strikeouts, two sixty six e RA much better
- 27:34Speaker 2: and still susceptible to the long ball. But uh, Saint Paul,
- 27:39Speaker 2: the ball flies there. See some cheapy home runs there,
- 27:42Speaker 2: So I want to see what he can do here.
- 27:45Speaker 2: But there's some internal belief that, you know, Andrew Morris
- 27:48Speaker 2: has been really good, this guy might have better stuff.
- 27:52Speaker 2: And we've seen you Anders go met step up. So look,
- 27:55Speaker 2: the Twins need more depth, they need guys who can
- 27:58Speaker 2: fill in and give them some spots. He will come
- 28:01Speaker 2: in a long man role. There's no question. That's just
- 28:03Speaker 2: how you get broken in in the bullpen, especially he's
- 28:06Speaker 2: still never pitched it back to back day, but we've
- 28:08Speaker 2: seen with Andrew Morris how that works. You give him
- 28:11Speaker 2: a little rope and then you figure out how to
- 28:12Speaker 2: do it and you know, but so what was that reaction, teller?
- 28:19Speaker 4: Uh, it's we we baseball as a whole. It's just
- 28:27Speaker 4: unfortunately kind of setting guys up to fail when they
- 28:29Speaker 4: go to the big leagues in that regard, Like, you
- 28:31Speaker 4: got this kid, he's gonna come up, probably start as
- 28:35Speaker 4: a long guy.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Great, he's never gone back to back in any environment,
- 28:40Speaker 4: and then you're gonna do it for the first time
- 28:42Speaker 4: in the big leagues and it's like you're gonna show
- 28:44Speaker 4: up the next day, you're.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Sore, you're worried about whatever, you don't.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Know who you're facing, how to get prepared, and then
- 28:50Speaker 4: you got to go pitch. And it's like it's not
- 28:52Speaker 4: even that it's like this life changing experience. It's more
- 28:57Speaker 4: that it's it's a physical thing that you just have
- 29:00Speaker 4: to go through at least once before you try it
- 29:03Speaker 4: again in the big leagues.
- 29:04Speaker 3: And you know, unfortunately for him, he didn't.
- 29:06Speaker 4: But you know, hopefully they can manage Latroy's out there,
- 29:09Speaker 4: you know, Roger, the guys who've had to learn, you
- 29:12Speaker 4: know there we forget too how many guys were starters
- 29:14Speaker 4: before they go to the pen.
- 29:16Speaker 3: You had to adapt at some point.
- 29:17Speaker 4: But yeah, it's just not the best place to learn
- 29:20Speaker 4: on the fly how to pitch two to three days
- 29:24Speaker 4: in a row.
- 29:25Speaker 2: He I will say, there was they I asked their
- 29:29Speaker 2: development guy and they did have him throw like maybe
- 29:32Speaker 2: a bullpen on one where he's done two times in
- 29:36Speaker 2: three days. I agree with you, it is strange. But
- 29:40Speaker 2: if it was a normal year where they had a
- 29:42Speaker 2: bunch of guys set in a bullpen, I think you
- 29:44Speaker 2: could experiment with that. One thing. One factor is here.
- 29:49Speaker 2: You know, you go, there's two reasons why it's been
- 29:52Speaker 2: every three days. One, they wanted to throw longer because
- 29:55Speaker 2: they figure he's going to come in in a spot
- 29:57Speaker 2: where he needs to give to two three inning possibly
- 30:01Speaker 2: what she can do because he was a starter. The
- 30:03Speaker 2: other part is is that all right? So say you
- 30:05Speaker 2: throw them Monday and he's not gonna throw again until Thursday. Well,
- 30:09Speaker 2: you want to keep him available on Tuesday and Wednesday
- 30:12Speaker 2: in case there's a major league injury and you need
- 30:14Speaker 2: to rush him up there, and you don't want to
- 30:17Speaker 2: tax him in the minors. So like, it's such an
- 30:19Speaker 2: intricate I agree with you. I wondered the same thing.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Like I even asked. Jeremy's all, I'm like, look, I
- 30:25Speaker 2: don't I don't do development, and this is your guys
- 30:28Speaker 2: job this, But I'm like, why why is this? And
- 30:30Speaker 2: it was explained it was like, well, we got to
- 30:32Speaker 2: balance a whole bunch of stuff, and so it's it's
- 30:37Speaker 2: it's tricky, it's delicate, and he'll have to do it
- 30:41Speaker 2: in the majors. But you know that's why they ease
- 30:42Speaker 2: him in and say we're gonna have you be a
- 30:44Speaker 2: long man first and show us what you can do
- 30:46Speaker 2: as a long man and then get trusted.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Other news of note from the last couple of days.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Dan looks like Luke Keishael, who's had some notable struggles
- 30:59Speaker 1: in the field, that second base is going to get
- 31:01Speaker 1: some looks elsewhere.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Yeah, he'll get some outfield time. We saw him briefly
- 31:07Speaker 2: in the outfield, I believe in Arizona, and we could
- 31:10Speaker 2: see him out there more. And I can tell you
- 31:13Speaker 2: what Luke Keishall will say about this. I'm a ballplayer.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Wherever you ask me to play, I'm gonna play right now.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Got it?
- 31:22Speaker 2: Because I asked him about I'm literally quoting Luke Keishall
- 31:28Speaker 2: because we asked him about first base and he said,
- 31:30Speaker 2: I'm a ballplayer. Wherever they put me in the lineup,
- 31:34Speaker 2: that's where I'll play. And I won't complain. That's so
- 31:37Speaker 2: I will say. If they ask him about playing the outfield,
- 31:40Speaker 2: Luke Keishall's gonna say, I'm a ballplayer and I'll play
- 31:42Speaker 2: where they everyone want me to play. Probably a little
- 31:44Speaker 2: disappointing because he has worked his tail off at second
- 31:47Speaker 2: base and isn't getting the results right now. We saw
- 31:51Speaker 2: the Tuesday game there were just a couple of plays.
- 31:53Speaker 2: It was like that game changes. There was the in
- 31:57Speaker 2: between her flip between Royce Lewis and Austin both where
- 32:00Speaker 2: it was like a field goal versus right down the
- 32:03Speaker 2: middle of the goalposts versus to the bag. And then
- 32:06Speaker 2: there was the liner in the first time Tommy Edmund
- 32:08Speaker 2: hit that ball that at least needed to get knocked
- 32:11Speaker 2: down and went through for a single. And so I mean, look,
- 32:15Speaker 2: you can understand it. I think maybe Royce Lewis could
- 32:19Speaker 2: play some second, maybe Cody Clemens will play second. They're
- 32:23Speaker 2: they're flexible with all their guys, and so they're just
- 32:25Speaker 2: gonna do that with Lukeishel too.
- 32:28Speaker 1: As Tyler said, don't blame him if he makes a
- 32:30Speaker 1: mistake in the outfield, right.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Tyler, Yeah, it's not his fault. They're telling him to
- 32:35Speaker 4: play there. He's a good dude, best he can. But
- 32:38Speaker 4: you can't jump down his throat if he misplays a
- 32:41Speaker 4: knuckling line drive at him.
- 32:42Speaker 3: For the first time.
- 32:45Speaker 1: As somebody trying to get reacclimated to right center field
- 32:48Speaker 1: and softball, it is, it's a different beast out there
- 32:51Speaker 1: for sure. All flies, oh don't you hate ball carries
- 32:55Speaker 1: at this field. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 32:57Speaker 2: How's the lighting at night? How's great lighting?
- 33:00Speaker 3: Lighting?
- 33:00Speaker 1: That's Lighting's not the problem. It's just like you see
- 33:03Speaker 1: the ball in the air, like there's no way that's
- 33:05Speaker 1: going over my head and the next thing you know,
- 33:06Speaker 1: you're sprinting efforts.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Yeah, you know which ones I hated.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I hated the line drives that were about fifteen feet
- 33:15Speaker 2: off the ground, like the steamrollers that are just coming
- 33:17Speaker 2: at you and there's no way, Like, I don't know
- 33:19Speaker 2: how firebucks and does that.
- 33:21Speaker 3: I still it's I've been out there.
- 33:23Speaker 4: It's shagging VP with him before, and like one will
- 33:25Speaker 4: come in like that and like I'll whip it and
- 33:28Speaker 4: he's just like covering his face like this, and like
- 33:30Speaker 4: what do you do with that? He's like I don't know.
- 33:33Speaker 4: You just you just have to swat at it and
- 33:35Speaker 4: hope it goes in the club like it's a It
- 33:38Speaker 4: gets you think shagging VP is not dangerous until you
- 33:41Speaker 4: know guys start hitting it one ten at you and
- 33:43Speaker 4: then yeah, like okay, yeah, I'll get.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Out of the way.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Goodness. Fortunately, in softball, no one cares too much if
- 33:49Speaker 1: you are trying your hardest, So those those to me
- 33:52Speaker 1: are just playing stand back and play him on a
- 33:55Speaker 1: hop or two and don't worry about it. Don't be
- 33:58Speaker 1: a hero. Up next, we go from the best team
- 34:01Speaker 1: in baseball to the worst. Coming into Target Field, the
- 34:03Speaker 1: Colorado Rockies visit for three Dan. Obviously, a series like this,
- 34:10Speaker 1: the Twins, if they want to sway some minds ahead
- 34:13Speaker 1: of the trade deadline, have got to capitalize on the
- 34:15Speaker 1: fact that a team with bigger struggles than them is
- 34:19Speaker 1: coming to town. Sweeps are somewhat hard to come by,
- 34:23Speaker 1: but winning two out of three for sure has to
- 34:26Speaker 1: be the goal. After what just happened with the Dodgers
- 34:28Speaker 1: this week.
- 34:30Speaker 2: It does, and I don't think that they are going
- 34:32Speaker 2: to come in with that bat of a taste in
- 34:34Speaker 2: their mouth from the Dodgers series, especially given the way
- 34:36Speaker 2: they played out in that last game knowing they were
