- 0:00Coming up today on Mini Scroll, the college students who were
- 0:03poor shamed for driving a Honda in LA.
- 0:07A viral story, time gone wrong and Patagonia versus Patagonia.
- 0:13Hi, everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:16daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:19from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:23Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:25I'm your host Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian
- 0:29Youth Digital Media media brand Centennial World.
- 0:32Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:34Sorry that there was no episode on Tuesday.
- 0:36I only said this at the very end.
- 0:37So I feel like some people maybe didn't hear because maybe you
- 0:40don't stay till the very, very end.
- 0:41But I was quite sick over the weekend and I knew I had a huge
- 0:45day on Tuesday. So I was like, OK, I have to do
- 0:47a monster episode Monday and then if I need to take the day
- 0:49off Tuesday from Mini, then I will do that.
- 0:52And that is what I did. But I am back and I'm feeling
- 0:55much better. So let's just get into it.
- 0:57All right, the first story that I have for you guys today, a
- 1:01college student named Johns is speaking out after he was quote,
- 1:04UN quote, poor shamed for pulling up to Community Goods in
- 1:08a Honda. This is crazy.
- 1:10OK, so Johns and his friend went to get a matcha at Community
- 1:14Goods after class. Community Goods, if you don't
- 1:17know, is a cafe that is so popular in LA, it consistently
- 1:21has lines down the block. There's been news articles
- 1:24written about how popular this cafe is, and I guess it's well
- 1:27known for its matcha. I suppose it's also well known
- 1:30for attracting like a bougie clientele because earlier this
- 1:34week a video started gaining some traction of Johns and his
- 1:38friend filmed by someone on the street.
- 1:41Another instance of filming random people in public.
- 1:45We need to stop that. OK, pulling up to community
- 1:49goods with the caption. Is that a Honda at community
- 1:52Goods? Someone didn't get the memo.
- 1:55This video started picking up some traction.
- 1:57So John's made a video explaining that that was him and
- 2:00his friend in the car. And then from that video, this
- 2:03went proper viral. My friend and I were publicly
- 2:05shamed for being poor at community goods.
- 2:08This is the video A creator posted on TikTok.
- 2:12My friend drives us in her Honda Accord and parks in front of the
- 2:15community goods store. We get our matcha and then we
- 2:18just go on about our day. The next morning after I wake up
- 2:22I am scrolling on TikTok and I see that video.
- 2:26I send it to my friend and I'm like isn't this your car?
- 2:29It was in fact her car, the one we got out of 5 minutes before
- 2:35that Lady started recording that video and the videos captioned.
- 2:39Someone didn't get the memo because most cars that park
- 2:42there are like luxury cars. Sorry, we're just college
- 2:45students who paid tuition and we have not had the opportunity of
- 2:50better economic mobility in comparison to the rest of LA.
- 2:55We just wanted to get a fun drink after class.
- 2:58Like who knew a girl with a Honda couldn't drink a matcha
- 3:00latte? OK so everyone is so supportive
- 3:03of him obviously. Like this is such an insanely
- 3:06classist video, even if it was posted as a joke.
- 3:10So after John's posted this video, the creator actually sent
- 3:13him Adm. This is what it reads.
- 3:16I just saw your video. OK, this was not the intent of
- 3:18my post, the opposite actually. Anyway, this was supposed to be
- 3:22a joke. Sorry if I've offended you, that
- 3:24was absolutely not what this was about.
- 3:26Oh that's a really good apology. Sorry if I offended you.
- 3:31OK then she privated her account, changed her username
- 3:35and her profile picture. Now on this video where John's
- 3:40shared. So he made this update video.
- 3:41After the original video, he made an update video sharing the
- 3:44DM. So on this update video, the
- 3:46creator left a comment, I think with her new username.
- 3:50So it reads my post was about community goods at the PDC
- 3:54location, which is known for having very expensive cars
- 3:56parked outside. The video was originally posted
- 3:58during Coachella when the typical crowd at that particular
- 4:01location was not there, so there were more regular cars parked
- 4:04outside than usual. The post was meant as a niche
- 4:06joke about the specific location and the contrast with what is
- 4:09usually there, Definitely not as a comment on someone's income or
- 4:13about Honda specifically. That was never the point of the
- 4:15post. I understand that if someone is
- 4:17not familiar with the seen there, it could have easily been
- 4:19interpreted completely different and I'm sorry for the way it
- 4:22landed. I don't believe in shaming
- 4:24people for how much money they have.
- 4:25That was never my intention. I don't think anybody was
- 4:28confused as to why this was posted.
- 4:30I think it was very clear that it was posted because typically
- 4:34the clientele is quite bougie like.
- 4:36I think that was made quite clear.
- 4:37People just didn't think that the video was very nice.
- 4:40They thought it was very inappropriate and rude and they
- 4:43were mad about it. So John says he doesn't know how
- 4:45to feel about all of this, but he ended with a very sweet
- 4:49message. If there's one thing that I hope
- 4:50she takes away from this situation, it's that intent does
- 4:54not erase implication. When we constantly frame
- 4:57everyday things as less than, especially things that are tied
- 5:01to money and status, it quietly normalizes classism.
- 5:06And honestly, the fact that people here regular car and
- 5:09instinctively think worse says a lot about how deeply status
- 5:13culture has shaped our perception of value.
- 5:16I don't know, it just seems like she's sorry because she got
- 5:18caught, but what do you guys think?
- 5:20OK, the next steps, something that we need to see, community
- 5:23goods collab with Johns and his friend or Honda collab with
- 5:28Johns and his friend or Honda and community goods together
- 5:32collab with Johns and his friend.
- 5:34We need some brand to jump on this.
- 5:37His videos have all been made in the past couple of days, so it's
- 5:40still very fresh and I'm really hoping we see something come
- 5:43from this. All right, the next story that I
- 5:45have for you guys today is a creator is going viral for a
- 5:48series talking about how her colleague was about to lose her
- 5:52job. So over the past 24 hours, a
- 5:54creator named Tiffany has gone viral for sharing a story time
- 5:57about how she warned A colleague she was about to get let go from
- 6:00their company. The catch is that this allegedly
- 6:03was all happening in real time. So Tiffany's first video was
- 6:07posted yesterday and apparently that was the day that the firing
- 6:11was going to take place. So Tiffany has made four videos
- 6:14about the situation in the past 24 hours, and she has racked up
- 6:17a total of 4.2 million views so far.
- 6:20Tiffany works in IT at this company, so she says she gets
- 6:23insight into like who's joining and who's leaving the company as
- 6:26she is obviously required to set up their tech or disconnect
- 6:28their tech. So she found out that this one
- 6:31girl, that her company was being let go and that shocked her
- 6:34because apparently this girl is just such a delight.
- 6:37She's like a good person and she had just gotten a pay raise.
- 6:40So Tiffany thought that was weird.
- 6:42The other weird thing that she said about this situation was
- 6:44that her manager, who by the way, Tiffany called a bitch in
- 6:46this TikTok, OK, she said that her manager is a bitch.
- 6:50So she says her manager and the HR manager kept telling Tiffany
- 6:54this is like an ultra confidential situation.
- 6:57So basically, Tiffany decided to tell this girl that she was
- 7:00about to get fired on Tuesday because she thought the
- 7:02situation was really confusing. And she kept on asking me like,
- 7:06do you know why they're firing me?
- 7:07Why are they firing me? Why, why, why?
- 7:09And I'm like, I don't know. I don't get any of that
- 7:11information. They just tell me what to do
- 7:13with the assets. That's it.
- 7:15Do you know this girl? Proceeds to tell me how the HR
- 7:19lady who keeps on telling me confidential off board,
- 7:23Confidential off board. Her and the HR girl were
- 7:26actually friends before she started working at the company.
- 7:30They go out to lunch sometimes, they chat, they text, they call,
- 7:34they hang out outside of work. The girl was about to get fired.
- 7:37She was chatting with her friend that works in HR and she was
- 7:42telling her that she was so excited she just got a raise.
- 7:45They were celebrating, you know, it was like a happy moment.
- 7:48Somehow, someway, the HR girl goes back to my boss and tells
- 7:54my boss about the conversation that oh, she was discussing her
- 7:59pay and one thing led to another and the boss calls the girl
- 8:06who's about to get fired into her office.
- 8:09So my boss is telling her, why were you discussing that You got
- 8:15a pay raise, you shouldn't be doing that.
- 8:18And she really ripped into her. And the girl was like, oh, I
- 8:21apologize. I didn't realize that I wasn't
- 8:23able to discuss needing a pay raise.
- 8:26So apparently Tiffany's manager was like really angry that this
- 8:31girl had shared stuff about her pay with the HR manager, who's
- 8:34her friend. And ever since then, she treated
- 8:36her really differently. So she's like, I think that must
- 8:39be why. So Tiffany post this first story
- 8:41time yesterday, the day that this girl was meant to be fired.
- 8:44Keep in mind Tiffany is still employed at this company
- 8:47allegedly. OK so this is not like a
- 8:49backdated story time. I mean as far as we know this
- 8:51didn't happen years ago. Like this is happening in the
- 8:54moment. So already everybody in the
- 8:57comments is like girl, is your job safe with you posting this?
- 9:01Like telling the Internet that you meddled with confidential
- 9:04employee matters, called your boss a bitch and blasted all of
- 9:08this on Tiktok. And that original video where
- 9:11she says all this has 3.3 million views on its own.
- 9:14So when I saw this video, I was thinking all those same things.
- 9:16And I thought there's no way that this is real.
- 9:18But I mean so far it seems like it is.
- 9:21So she posts an update after the firing has been done.
- 9:24A few hours later, telling Tiktok that this girl told
- 9:27Tiffany she recorded the meeting where she was let go because
- 9:29obviously she knew she was about to get let go and that she would
- 9:32be taking legal action against the company.
- 9:35So Tiffany's, like, so excited. She's like, Oh my God, I'm so
- 9:37happy she's going to stand up for herself.
- 9:38And like my warning to her gave her the ability to like be
- 9:42protected against this and put these plans in place.
- 9:44So I get here right at 9:00 and as I'm getting out of my car I'm
- 9:51walking through the parking lot and I see my boss has already
- 9:55walked her to the car with her belongings like she's out of
- 9:59there. 9:00 on the dot she's removed like the conversation
- 10:03has already happened. So I got to call my girl and see
- 10:05what's up. So I call her and I'm like, what
- 10:09happened? And she's like, well, my manager
- 10:13pulled me into her office as soon as I got here this morning
- 10:16and was like, you're being let go.
- 10:19She said when she called her into the office, she hit the
- 10:21record button 'cause she knew what time it was.
- 10:26Ask her manager, why am I being let go?
- 10:29And at that point the manager says my boss is gonna explain
- 10:35further. So my boss enters the
- 10:38conversation and she just proceeds to say it's not been a
- 10:42good fit. So sometimes after she leaves
- 10:45the building, she gets the e-mail that has the PDF with the
- 10:49severance letter, basically that you are terminated.
- 10:54And so she screenshots me the e-mail that she constructed in
- 10:58response to my boss sending her the severance letter.
- 11:04And it was something to the effect of thank you for sending
- 11:07me the severance letter. I will have to have my attorney
- 11:11review it since I'm not well versed in this.
- 11:14Long story short, my girl is about to sue.
- 11:19Again, Tiffany, why are you telling the Internet this if
- 11:24it's true and it's all happening in real time?
- 11:27Like this is not the right move. This is putting that girl at
- 11:30risk. If the company sees Tiffany's
- 11:32videos and then they know that she's thinking about taking
- 11:36legal action against them and that she had recorded their
- 11:38conversation, like that's putting that girl at risk too.
- 11:41And don't get me wrong, Tiffany seems like a really genuine
- 11:44person and like a ride or die kind of friend.
- 11:45Like watching these videos, I genuinely believe her and I
- 11:48genuinely like her, but taking all of this to the Internet was
- 11:53obviously not a good decision, not just for the girl who was
- 11:57fired, but also for her own job sake.
- 11:59OK so in this update video she also addresses concerns about
- 12:02her own job, saying that she is a contract employee and was
- 12:05already aware that they weren't renewing her contract.
- 12:08But again, don't you need references?
- 12:11Like, you can probably never use this company now for references
- 12:14And also putting company information out there, like
- 12:17confidential information and talking about all of this,
- 12:20putting that out there on TikTok.
- 12:21Like if a future employer sees this, that's really going to
- 12:25impact if they want to hire you or not.
- 12:27Anyways, So then today she returned with a video sobbing,
- 12:31saying that she has put her job at risk and for what?
- 12:33Because she has since found out that this girl is not actually
- 12:36going to take any legal action. And when Tiffany texted her to
- 12:39say, like Tik Tok's rallying behind you, girl, we got your
- 12:43back. Apparently she goes to Tiffany.
- 12:45I always put myself out there. I always put myself on a limb.
- 12:52I really jeopardized my job, you know, because I saw somebody who
- 13:02was being wrongly terminated and, umm, I decided to step in
- 13:10and do something about it. The update is that the the girl
- 13:18that I did all that for, she doesn't actually want to pursue
- 13:23a lawsuit and at. 1st I guess that didn't really.
- 13:29Bother me because I realized that not everybody has the same
- 13:33energy I have, right? But I guess what really bothers
- 13:37me is that I reached out to the person and I told her how
- 13:45everybody on TikTok is rallying for her.
- 13:48And, you know, I, I reached out to her and she just completely
- 13:57like blew me off. And there's been so many times
- 14:04where I've been in this exact same position where it feels
- 14:07like I am being the purest form of myself.
- 14:14I see people that are in need and I help them and then at the
- 14:21end of the day I'm exposed or or I am worse off in some way.
- 14:29I do think, I don't know why, I just like, love Tiffany.
- 14:33I hope it doesn't come out that she's like some scammer or
- 14:35something. I don't think she is like, I do
- 14:37think that Tiffany's heart is in the right place, but like, I
- 14:40don't know what it is about her. When I watch her videos, I
- 14:44believe her. I believe that this is from like
- 14:47the kindness of her heart and that she was really trying to do
- 14:50the right thing. But of course, this girl is
- 14:52going to be freaked out. Finding out that Tiffany is
- 14:54going viral, talking about her job loss.
- 14:57That is something that is so personal, it's so upsetting.
- 15:01And for something that just happened, like literally
- 15:03happened apparently yesterday for somebody that you're working
- 15:06with to make content about that, like your job loss.
- 15:09Like, it's not even you making content about your own job loss
- 15:11like somebody else is making content about your job loss.
- 15:13Like this just happened. So this comment on TikTok, I
- 15:17think sums up how I feel about this.
- 15:19It's from a user named Cara. And she wrote, I think the
- 15:21problem is that you've centered yourself in someone else's
- 15:24story. Give her space to deal with
- 15:25losing her job and maybe take a break from TikTok.
- 15:28Now the final update in all of this is Tiffany has addressed
- 15:31her crying video saying that she has these big emotions and
- 15:34that's just part of who she is. OK.
- 15:36So I feel like y'all gotta y'all gotta chill in the comments.
- 15:41So you mean to tell me that you never had like a really bad day
- 15:47and the culmination of the day's events kind of get to you, And
- 15:52then it's just like the straw that breaks the camel's back?
- 15:57I would describe my final update as far as my plot twist series,
- 16:04as that moment where, yeah, it really is not that deep,
- 16:11honestly. And one thing that you got to
- 16:14know about me is I can be very dramatic.
- 16:18Like that's why that's. What y'all?
- 16:21Signed up for, you know that, right?
- 16:24Like that was the whole thing. Like that's a big part of my
- 16:27personality is I can be very over the top and dramatic and
- 16:34I'm the main character in my story.
- 16:36So I sometimes forget that other people.
- 16:40Are. Going through their own thing
- 16:42and they're processing things in their own way and their reaction
- 16:46is not necessarily the way that I would would react.
- 16:49But that doesn't mean that my reality is any less my reality.
- 16:54When you're someone like me who has big emotions all the time,
- 16:59it comes in waves. Sometimes I'm able to let those
- 17:03emotions right out, other times they overpower me.
- 17:06And then you get a video like the one that you just saw of me
- 17:10crying my eyes out because old girl didn't text me back.
- 17:16So watch the space, let's see if when I come back tomorrow for a
- 17:19Friday mini, if maybe Tiffany has made another video being
- 17:22like Psych, this was all a lie or this was all a troll or
- 17:25whatever. I don't know.
- 17:26I guess we'll see. I don't think it is.
- 17:29I mean, to me, it seems real. It seems genuine.
- 17:31Regardless, people are taking it as genuine and it is going off
- 17:35right now. All right.
- 17:36And the last story that I have for you guys today is climate
- 17:38activist and drag queen Patagonia is being sued by
- 17:42Patagonia. So outdoor apparel brand
- 17:45Patagonia is facing backlash after suing drag queen Patagonia
- 17:48over alleged trademark infringement.
- 17:51The lawsuit claims that Patty's name and merchandise are too
- 17:54similar to Patagonia's branding and could confuse consumers.
- 17:58So for anyone who doesn't know what Patagonia is a drag queen
- 18:00and a climate activist. She's been using this name and
- 18:03engaging in this activism under this name since 2018.
- 18:06So today Patty posted this lengthy video addressing the
- 18:09situation and claims that this lawsuit betrays the brand's own
- 18:12values and is trying to silence her work.
- 18:15In this open statement, she asked Patagonia to drop the case
- 18:18and argued that the legal battle could financially devastate her
- 18:21small business and her activism efforts.
- 18:23Hi everyone, it's Patagonia. Today, I'm breaking my silence
- 18:27about the lawsuit that the multibillion dollar corporation
- 18:30Patagonia has filed against me, a drag queen and climate
- 18:34activist, for trademark infringement.
- 18:36Patagonia told the media. They're only suing me for a
- 18:38dollar. What they're actually trying to
- 18:40do is to take away my name permanently and threaten me with
- 18:44more than $1 million in legal fees.
- 18:47This is not a brand conflict. This is a corporation trying to
- 18:50erase an activist. And this is how corporations
- 18:53bully individuals who cannot match their resources.
- 18:57Because this would take away not only my activism in my career,
- 19:00but also the livelihoods of the team I employ.
- 19:04This is a betrayal of Patagonia SCORE mission.
- 19:07Because if they're in business to save the home planet, why are
- 19:10they suing a climate activist? In response to this, Patagonia
- 19:14says that they have spent years trying to reach a private
- 19:16agreement before they ended up taking legal action, and they
- 19:20insisted that the lawsuit is about protecting its
- 19:22intellectual property, not attacking LGBTQ plus advocacy or
- 19:26creative expression. In her statement, Patty pushed
- 19:29back on those claims, saying she has never used Patagonia's
- 19:31official logo or branding, and she accused the company of
- 19:34bullying an activist who shares many of its environmental goals.
- 19:38She also argued that the lawsuit, regardless of its
- 19:40intention, sends the wrong message during Pride Month and
- 19:43that it's interesting timing given the war on LGBTQIA rights
- 19:48and drag queen performers around the world at the moment.
- 19:50Even if this is how trademark law works and they have a valid
- 19:54case, the reality is that the court of public opinion is
- 19:59raking Patagonia over the cold for filing this lawsuit and if
- 20:03this continues to blow up, I think it could cause real PR
- 20:06damage long term for the brand. And another thing that people
- 20:10are saying is it is crazy that Patagonia is doing this
- 20:13considering a lot of drag Queens are kind of named.
- 20:17Like after brands or have like a play on words when it comes to
- 20:20their names and how it references pop culture and
- 20:22brands. And like Trixie, Mattel for
- 20:24example, like Mattel Barbie and Mattel has been over the years
- 20:29pretty supportive of Trixie. And I just think it is so short
- 20:34sighted of Patagonia to have filed this lawsuit at this
- 20:39current time if they have been fighting this for years.
- 20:41While you really picked the worst time in history to be
- 20:46filing this lawsuit, like could you have not just taken the L
- 20:50like I don't know, I, I just, I don't know.
- 20:53Anyways, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 20:55Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
