- 0:00We have two more chapters left, 8:00 and 9:00, so I thought we'd
- 0:04maybe finish this book today. So let's get started on this.
- 0:09Dear God, please be with us as we read through the last
- 0:11chapters from the book of Amos and give us wisdom and insight
- 0:15in Jesus name. So chapter 8 is called a basket
- 0:19of ripe fruit. This is what the Sovereign Lord
- 0:23showed me, a basket of ripe fruit.
- 0:27What do you see, Amos? He asked.
- 0:29A basket of ripe fruit, I answered.
- 0:32Then the Lord said to me, the time is ripe for my people,
- 0:37Israel. I will spare them no longer.
- 0:41So often God lets sin get to a certain level, and then he acts,
- 0:47and that's where this appears to be in that day, declares the
- 0:53sovereign Lord. The songs in the temple will
- 0:56turn to wailing, many, many bodies flung everywhere.
- 1:02Silence. Hear this you who trample the
- 1:07needy and do away with the poor of the land, saying, When will
- 1:13the new moon be over? So that we may sell grain and
- 1:17the Sabbath be ended, that we may market wheat.
- 1:22Skimping on the measure, boosting the price and cheating
- 1:26with dishonest scales, buying the poor with silver and the
- 1:32needy for a paper sandals, selling even the sweepings with
- 1:37the wheat. So in this verse, it, it shows
- 1:44us that the people at that time were more interested, like the
- 1:49new moon had festivals that signified certain things and
- 1:53they were not so much interested in what it signified as far as
- 1:57how it relates to God, But they were like, when is this going to
- 2:02be over? So that we may sell.
- 2:04They're, they're worldly thinking like, OK, let's get
- 2:08this festival over. I've got stuff to sell.
- 2:10I just want this to be over. The same thing they said with
- 2:12the Sabbath. When is this going to be ended?
- 2:14So that we, we market the wheat. So they're looking at
- 2:18materialistic things, you know, when can we get over these
- 2:22religious festivals and we just want to sell.
- 2:27And then not only that, but they're skimping on the
- 2:29measures. So they're not giving what they
- 2:33had given before, they're giving less than they did, but they're
- 2:37boosting the price. So that's like inflation less
- 2:42for more money and then cheating with dishonest scales.
- 2:49So they're pulling this off on people that they don't realize
- 2:52that they're getting less, and it's all because they have this
- 2:57love of money. So the love of money is the root
- 3:00of all evil. Wealth is not a problem to God.
- 3:03Sometimes God blesses people with wealth.
- 3:05It's what we do with the money, with the resources.
- 3:09That's what it is. That's what money is.
- 3:10It's a resource to do something. What do we use it for?
- 3:14Do we use it for selfishness or do we use it for others?
- 3:19Each of us has to take a look at how we spend our money.
- 3:22What are we doing with it? Where are we spending it?
- 3:24Would God be happy with how we're spending it?
- 3:27And that's an ongoing reflection of what we do every day anyway,
- 3:33about this measuring with just cheating with dish, dishonest
- 3:39scales and this inflation. It is kind of a foreshadowing of
- 3:45what comes later in Revelation. It's seal #3 and so we can see
- 3:51that throughout time, some of the things that are listed as
- 3:56the seals happen, but they aren't like the very end times
- 4:00yet. And I can also see that
- 4:02happening right now. Like maybe we are in the end
- 4:06times and maybe we're not. Maybe this is a foreshadowing
- 4:10and it's, you know, being used as a wake up call to people and
- 4:14we are seeing there's the probability of, you know,
- 4:19inflation. I mean, not the probability.
- 4:21It's happened already. I mean, we see like since 2020,
- 4:26pricing has gone way up in a lot of different categories.
- 4:30We've definitely had inflation. We've definitely seen, you know,
- 4:36bigger boxes with less stuff in it for more money.
- 4:39So that's that's definitely applicable today.
- 4:43Is this a foreshadowing of future events?
- 4:46Like is it going to get a lot worse than that?
- 4:48It sounds like it from the seals listed in Revelation.
- 4:52But again, I don't know and we won't know until hindsight when
- 4:56we've when we've really seen what the Bible is talking about
- 5:01in those seals as they open. Anyway, it's it's Revelation
- 5:08chapter 6, verses 5 and 6. In fact, I can read it because I
- 5:13think I saved that page. No, I didn't say that page.
- 5:16Another one. Anyway, if you want to read
- 5:18about that seal, I can turn to it, but it says something
- 5:23similar. Let me see if I can get to that
- 5:25page with not a lot of time. OK, so I'll read first what Amos
- 5:35says. Amos says, you know, he's
- 5:38cheating with dishonest scales, skipping on the measure,
- 5:42boosting the price, and cheating with dishonest scales.
- 5:45Now here's what Revelation says about the third seal.
- 5:48When the Lamb, that who is Jesus opened the third seal, I heard
- 5:54the third living creature say come.
- 5:57I looked and there before me was a Black Horse.
- 6:01In In other parts of scripture we know that the horses
- 6:04represent different spirits. It's writer was holding a pair
- 6:09of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a
- 6:13voice among the four living creatures saying, 2 lbs of wheat
- 6:19for a day's wages and 6 lbs of barley for a day's wages, and do
- 6:27not damage the oil and the wine. So again, that just made me
- 6:32think of it. OK, going back to the book of
- 6:35Amos, the Lord has sworn by himself the pride of Jacob.
- 6:40I will never forget anything they have done.
- 6:44Will not the land tremble for this, and all who live in it
- 6:49mourn? The whole land will rise like
- 6:51the Nile. It will be stirred up and then
- 6:54sink like the river of the of Egypt in that day, declares the
- 6:59Lord. I will make the sun go down at
- 7:02noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.
- 7:07So I want to pause for a minute because I I don't know how many
- 7:13times God has made this happen. The sun go down at noon and
- 7:18darken the earth in broad daylight.
- 7:20We do know that when Jesus died on the cross, the sun, I believe
- 7:25darkness came over and he died at 3:00 and it went down at noon
- 7:30like it became dark at noon. So that is like a foreshadowing
- 7:34of the the death of Jesus on the cross.
- 7:38And then I also recall, well then a few years ago in 2021, I
- 7:44started having dreams and in, I think it was in 22 when I had
- 7:49the first dream in the springtime about the rapture or
- 7:54the gathering. And I have, I had three of them
- 7:59and each one of them was a little bit different, but they
- 8:03had something in common. Right before it happened,
- 8:06everything went pitch black where you could not see your
- 8:09hand in front of your face like it was that black.
- 8:12And then the rapture occurred, the gathering occurred, whatever
- 8:16you want to call it. And after I had multiple dreams
- 8:20like that, I wanted to check that against scripture.
- 8:24And it does say like the sun will be darkened, the moon will
- 8:28not, or the moon will be darkened, or the moon will turn
- 8:31to blood, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not
- 8:35give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky before
- 8:39that dreadful or great day of the Lord.
- 8:44I know I'm paraphrasing that because I don't memorize
- 8:46scripture perfectly, but you can look up that for your yourself.
- 8:50I mean, it's written multiple by multiple in multiple books.
- 8:55So the best way to find it is an electronic or digital Bible and
- 9:00search. And you can see all the
- 9:02different verses that talk about, you know that this, this
- 9:08the sun will not give its light. Maybe that's what you can search
- 9:11and then you can find all the references to that.
- 9:13But multiple prophets talk about this before the coming of the
- 9:16day of the Lord. And this is also, like I said, a
- 9:20foreshadowing too, because that's what happened when Jesus
- 9:22died on the cross. And while that was his death,
- 9:26and then three days later he resurrected.
- 9:29So that did happen again, before Jesus rose from the dead, before
- 9:35he, you know, ascended. And so this is, I think it's
- 9:43significant. And again, I'm just pointing out
- 9:45things that come to mind when I read Scripture as I do.
- 9:48So going back to Amos, I will turn your religious festivals
- 9:52into mourning and all your singing into weeping.
- 9:55I will make all of you wear sackcloth and shave your heads.
- 9:59I will make that time like morning for an only son.
- 10:04I just think, you know, referencing an only son kind of
- 10:08makes me think about Jesus and mourning for an only son.
- 10:14Like they don't even realize that they'll be mourning for
- 10:17Jesus because Jesus is the way to God's Kingdom.
- 10:22He provided the way by his death on the cross.
- 10:25So I will make that time like mourning for an only son and the
- 10:29end of it like a bitter day. Obviously that also means like
- 10:36if you only had one child and that that child was gone, that's
- 10:41the type of mourning that somebody's going to be happy
- 10:43that someone is going to experience.
- 10:46So that's what it actually says. But what it made me think about
- 10:51was about God having Jesus as his only son.
- 10:55The days are coming, declares the sovereign Lord, when I will
- 10:59send a famine through the land, not a famine of food or a thirst
- 11:06for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.
- 11:12So this is probably a future time because the words of the
- 11:20Lord not hearing them for a while.
- 11:23I don't. I mean, maybe in their captivity
- 11:26they didn't hear from the word of the Lord.
- 11:28But is it also a foreshadowing? Like the enemy is always trying
- 11:33to silence the word of God. But the Bible has withstood all
- 11:39these thousands of years and is still alive and well today.
- 11:46And just like Jesus said, you know, heaven and earth may pass
- 11:51away, but my word will remain. So God will hold true to it.
- 11:56But he's saying here, there's going to be a famine of hearing
- 12:01the words of the Lord. So maybe because of oppression,
- 12:04because they are silenced, because they fear their life,
- 12:08they're not going to be speaking about God.
- 12:11So just an observation there. People will stagger from sea to
- 12:16sea and wander from north to east searching for the word of
- 12:21the Lord, but they will not find it in that day.
- 12:26The lovely young women and strong young men will faint
- 12:32because of thirst. Those who swear by the sin of
- 12:37Samaria, who say, who say, As surely as your God lives, Dan,
- 12:43or as surely as the God of Beersheba lives, they will fall,
- 12:48never to rise again. So that's the end of chapter 8.
- 12:53I'll read the questions and the answers now.
- 12:55Why, in the midst of wailing, would there be a command for
- 12:59silence? The scene in the temple would be
- 13:01so horrific, so horrible, that the only appropriate response
- 13:07would be silence. What was this new moon?
- 13:10The new moon was both a religious and a civil festival.
- 13:14It was celebrated at the beginning of each month and is
- 13:17often mentioned in the Old Testament along with the
- 13:20Sabbath. It was a day of celebration, of
- 13:24increased offerings, and of worship.
- 13:28How were the poor bought? With silver?
- 13:30Amos indicated Israel's rich for tramp, and I'm sorry.
- 13:36Amos indicted Israel's rich for trampling on the needy their
- 13:43fraudulent business dealings made slaves of the poor for
- 13:46nothing more than a piece of silver or a pair of sandals.
- 13:50Amos condemned unjust business practice as a religious problem,
- 13:54a sin against the unjustice and righteousness of God.
- 13:58What were the sweepings? Chaff that fell to the floor
- 14:02When grain was threshed, it was inedible and thrown away.
- 14:06Dishonest merchants, though, took, though mixed the sweeping
- 14:12with the grain, and sold it as pure grain to the poor.
- 14:17What is the pride of Jacob? Some say this refers to the land
- 14:21of Israel. Others suggest that the Lord is
- 14:24the pride of Jacob and that He was swearing by himself as he
- 14:27had done before. Why would God swear the Lord's
- 14:31house suffered in the apostasy of Israel?
- 14:35Therefore, on the basis of previous promises to Jacob, God
- 14:39took an oath that He would not forget the misdeeds of Israel.
- 14:44He would hold their sins against them as a violation of the
- 14:48covenant between them. Why would they shave their
- 14:51heads? While we might dress in black to
- 14:54express our grief, people in the ancient Near East expressed deep
- 14:59sorrow and other ways. Shaving one's head was an
- 15:02expression of mourning the loss of a loved one.
- 15:05Even women, especially the widows, shave their heads and
- 15:09put ashes on themselves. They also tore their clothes and
- 15:13put on sackcloth a fabric made of rough, coarse black goats
- 15:17hair. Why would God starve his people
- 15:21spiritually? God's people had starved
- 15:24themselves by chasing after worldliness, materialism, and
- 15:29Pagan gods, so God would judge them.
- 15:32Part of their judgement included God's absence, and you can find
- 15:36that in Deuteronomy chapter 8 verse 3.
- 15:41What was the sin of Samaria? The worship of idols.
- 15:45Idols to Baal has sprung up across the northern Kingdom of
- 15:49Israel. Jeroboam the first had initiated
- 15:52the worship of golden calves at Dan and Bethel.
- 15:57His right. That's found in First Kings
- 15:59chapter 12 verses 25 through 33. His rationale may have been that
- 16:04the idols could represent the presence of the invisible God
- 16:10standing like Bale on the back of each calf.
- 16:15Archaeologists have discovered stone pictures depicting Bale on
- 16:21the back of a bull. That's pretty evil.
- 16:25OK, continuing the last chapter, Chapter 9.
- 16:28I saw the Lord standing by the altar and he said strike the top
- 16:32of the pillars so that the thresholds shake.
- 16:35Bring them down on the heads of all the people.
- 16:38Those who are left I will kill with the sword.
- 16:42No one will get away, none will escape, though they dig down to
- 16:48the depths below. From there my hand will take
- 16:52them, though they climb up to the heavens above.
- 16:56From there I will bring them down, though they hide
- 16:59themselves on the top of caramel, There I will hunt them
- 17:03down and seize them, though they hide from my eyes at the bottom
- 17:07of the sea. There I will command the serpent
- 17:11to bite them. Though they are driven into
- 17:14exile by their enemies, there I will command the sword to slay
- 17:20them. I will keep my eye on them for
- 17:24harm and not for good. So that's different than what
- 17:28he's ever said before. But it's because of their
- 17:31idolatry, their choices. The Lord, the Lord Almighty, he
- 17:35touches the earth and it melts, and all who live in it mourn.
- 17:40The whole land rises like the Nile, then sinks like the river
- 17:46of Egypt. That's the second time that was
- 17:49used. He builds his lofty place in the
- 17:52heavens and sets its foundations on the earth.
- 17:56He calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the
- 18:00face of the land. The Lord is his name.
- 18:04Are you not Israelites? Israelites the same to me as the
- 18:08Kushites. Well, right there he's showing
- 18:10them, you know, there's Kush, there's Israelites.
- 18:13But he's like, are you not Israelites the same to me as the
- 18:16Kushites? He's showing no favoritism here.
- 18:19He's saying you're going to get punishment for your deeds, just
- 18:23as I've punished other people. And you know, the purpose of the
- 18:27punishment is either if somebody is unrepentant and doesn't want
- 18:32to change and will never change, that's going to be just
- 18:36judgement. But those who will have it in
- 18:40them to finally hit rock bottom, that's the those are the ones
- 18:44that God is basically disciplining them.
- 18:47They don't completely die from the judgment, but God is giving
- 18:52them a very harsh warning. So like, if any of us have ever
- 18:55had any like extreme tragedy in our life and we haven't yet
- 18:59turned to God, that's a great warning.
- 19:02Like God spared your life if that happened to you and you
- 19:07should be thankful for that and turn to God because God is
- 19:10patient. God is being patient with you.
- 19:13But if you've had a near death experience and then you still
- 19:18haven't turned to God, be careful because judgement could
- 19:22be on the way. You don't know how long God will
- 19:24be patient. And if you're a rebellious
- 19:27person and just keep rejecting God, you don't know when your
- 19:31time is up because God has a time set for all of us, and we
- 19:35don't know what that is. But this is just a warning to
- 19:39anyone who is in that condition right now.
- 19:43Did I not bring Israel up from Egypt, the Philistines from
- 19:48Kaftor, and the Aramins from Kerr?
- 19:53Surely the eyes of the sovereign Lord are on the sinful Kingdom.
- 19:58I will destroy it from the face of the earth yet.
- 20:03I will not totally destroy the descendants of Jacob.
- 20:08So again, God had he always keeps a remnant of his people.
- 20:12Why? Because he said that someday
- 20:17that Israel would be like the sand on, you know, the sand and
- 20:22the sea, like they're going to be so numerous.
- 20:25And God cannot wipe out all of his people if he holds true to
- 20:31his promise. So there's always a remnant.
- 20:34Even when we see the Book of Revelation in the very last
- 20:37days, there's 12,000 from every tribe.
- 20:41And something recently that I just noticed, every tribe except
- 20:44for Dan and Judah are listed. So that's kind of interesting,
- 20:49but well, continue. So declares the Lord, for I will
- 20:58give the command and I will shake the people of Israel among
- 21:02all the nations. As grain is shaken in a sieve,
- 21:07not a Pebble will reach the ground.
- 21:10All the sinners among my people will die by the sword.
- 21:15So look at this. God is, you know, a lot of times
- 21:18we're like, how could God do that?
- 21:20But, you know, perhaps some of the people that God eliminates
- 21:26through war are sinners that never have turned to God, that
- 21:31just keep rebelling against God and have no intention of ever
- 21:35turning to God. And so God is God of justice.
- 21:40So whenever God acts, we can be assured that there is number 1.
- 21:44He has a plan for it. And sometimes he uses bad things
- 21:48for good purposes. And then #2 is sometimes it's
- 21:52judgement against sinners. And here he's saying all the
- 21:56sinners among my people. So maybe there's some that are
- 22:00there that are not sinning, but all the sinners among the people
- 22:03will die by the sword. All those who say disaster will
- 22:09not overtake or meet us. Then it says in that day, I will
- 22:14restore David's fallen shelter. I will repair its broken walls
- 22:19and restore its rune runes and will rebuild it as it used to
- 22:24be. Now there's a couple things that
- 22:27I'm noticing here. Number one, I can see why Israel
- 22:31believes, like today, believes that the Messiah will build the
- 22:35temple because God says this. And Amos, I will restore
- 22:40Davis''s fallen shelter. I will repair its broken walls
- 22:42and restore its ruins and will rebuild it as it used to be.
- 22:48In reading Scripture, I know that, you know, they went into
- 22:52Israel, went into exile, and then Judah went into exile and I
- 22:57do know that they came back Cyrus Pers.
- 23:01I guess the Persian allowed them to come back and start
- 23:04rebuilding and working on the wall and rebuilding, you know,
- 23:09parts of the temple. But everybody who saw it was
- 23:13saddened because some of them had seen it in its glory of
- 23:18before, and they knew it wasn't the same as the way it was being
- 23:24rebuilt. It didn't have the grandeur of
- 23:27what it had been before. So therefore, because of that, I
- 23:32think about this being more of an end times prophecy where I
- 23:38will restore David's fallen shelter, I will repair its
- 23:41broken walls and restore its ruins and will rebuild it as it
- 23:44used to be. Well, I don't think that's ever
- 23:47been done in any of these. Rebuilding of the temples so
- 23:52that they may have possessed, so that they may possess the
- 23:56remnant of Edom. Now Edom, I believe, is like the
- 24:01modern day Jordan area. So there's people from Jordan
- 24:04that'll be in it too. And all the nations that bear my
- 24:07name. Notice that it says all nations
- 24:10that bear my name. So again, it's not just for the
- 24:18people who call themselves Israelites, I guess.
- 24:23It says all the nations that bear my name, so that they may
- 24:26possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations that bear my
- 24:29name. So declares the Lord, who will
- 24:34do these things. So to me it says this is about
- 24:38end times. The days are coming, declares
- 24:41the Lord, when the Reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and
- 24:46the planter by the one treading grapes.
- 24:49And when I read that, I was thinking Jesus is the one
- 24:54ultimately who's treading grapes.
- 24:56And that's found in Revelation 14 verses 14 through 20.
- 25:00And I'll go ahead and read those too.
- 25:02So the Reaper will be overtaken by the ploughman and the planter
- 25:07by the one treading grapes. So here's what it says about the
- 25:13that period of time in the Book of Revelation, chapter 14, verse
- 25:1814. I looked and there before me was
- 25:22a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man,
- 25:30with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand.
- 25:36Then another Angel came out of the temple and called in a loud
- 25:41voice to him who was sitting on the cloud.
- 25:45Take your sip, sickle and reap, because the time to reap has
- 25:50come, for the harvest of the the earth is ripe.
- 25:55So he who is seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth
- 26:01and the earth was harvested. What is that happening?
- 26:05That is like that's gathering, right?
- 26:08That's a gathering of the people.
- 26:10And this is where I, you know, there's different people that
- 26:14interpret Scripture differently. So I'm just going to say that to
- 26:17me, this sounds like when the gathering, when the rapture
- 26:21occurs, because he is seated on the cloud.
- 26:26Jesus is seated on the on the cloud, Son of man.
- 26:29That's refer a reference to Jesus.
- 26:31He's seated on the cloud and he is gathering the harvest because
- 26:37people are ready. And and so some people say,
- 26:42well, this is like, you know, he tramples on them and he it's the
- 26:46wrath. But I mean, the way I'm reading
- 26:50it, it's like, first, this happened.
- 26:52So, OK, so Jesus is sitting on this cloud.
- 26:55Another Angel came out of the temple and called in a loud
- 26:57voice to Jesus, who was sitting on the cloud.
- 27:00Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has
- 27:03come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
- 27:06So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the
- 27:09earth, and the earth was harvested.
- 27:12OK, so that happened. He gathered people.
- 27:15Now another Angel, so this is the second Angel, came out of
- 27:20the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle.
- 27:26So this is another Angel, still another Angel who had charge of
- 27:30the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to
- 27:34him who had the sharp sickle. Take your sharp sickle and
- 27:39gather the cluster of grapes from the earths vine, because
- 27:44its grapes are ripe. The Angel swung his sickle on
- 27:48the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great
- 27:53wine Press of God's wrath. They were trampled in the wine
- 27:59press outside the city, and the blood flowed out of the press,
- 28:03rising as high as the horse's bridles for a distance of 1600
- 28:09stadia. So that I would, It's about 180
- 28:16miles or about 300 kilometers, so quite a distance.
- 28:22But they're appears to be like, it says that I guess those who
- 28:28have the Holy Spirit who are born again, they we are not
- 28:32subject to God's wrath. This is obviously the wrath of
- 28:37God when the grapes are put into the wine press and there's blood
- 28:41everywhere. So that's the wrath.
- 28:44But the people are not, it sounds to me like there are two
- 28:48gatherings here. One of them is the gathering,
- 28:51you know, for safety, harvesting of the earth, those who are
- 28:56ready. And then the other one is a
- 29:00secondary one that takes the grapes and they're, they're on
- 29:04the vine, they're on the earth, they're connected to the earth
- 29:08and they are going into the wrath of God.
- 29:11So it's, to me, it seems like there's, that's the way I
- 29:17understand it at least. So now I need to get back to
- 29:21Amos about, so it says, when the Reaper will be overtaken by the
- 29:26ploughman and the planter by the one treading the grapes, new
- 29:29wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the
- 29:33hills. And I will bring my people
- 29:35Israel back from exile. I will bring.
- 29:39That's God talking about that. They will rebuild the ruined
- 29:44cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and
- 29:47drink their wine. They will make gardens and eat
- 29:50their fruit. I will plant Israel in their own
- 29:54land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them,
- 30:02says the Lord your God. Now that's definitely end times
- 30:05because Israel has never possessed fully the land God has
- 30:10given them. And so to me this seems very
- 30:15clear that this is about the end time never again to be uprooted
- 30:20from the land I have given them. So that's that has to be when
- 30:24Jesus returns. And this is in the book of Amos
- 30:27last Chapter 9. So I will read the questions and
- 30:32answers for Chapter 9. What sort of harm did the Lord
- 30:37intend to do? He simply permitted the people
- 30:40of Israel to suffer the consequences of their own evil
- 30:43actions. The consequences themselves
- 30:47would be called evil. The Israelites had wanted to
- 30:50adopt the lifestyle and customs of their neighbors, so God
- 30:54punished them by granting them their wish.
- 30:58God turns us over. He lets us do what we want.
- 31:01He that's free will. There we get to choice.
- 31:03We can't blame anybody where we end up because we will have made
- 31:09our choice and we get what we want.
- 31:13So be careful what you ask for. Their idolatry, immorality and
- 31:20exploitation of the poor had polluted their faith in God.
- 31:25God judged them by allowing them to become totally immersed in
- 31:31paganism. So God turns people over to
- 31:36their desires. He does give you the desires of
- 31:39your heart. But we have to remember that the
- 31:43heart is evil, so we really want the desires of God, not
- 31:47necessarily what comes from our own heart, because we can
- 31:51mislead ourselves. Weren't the Israelites God's
- 31:55chosen people? The wickedness made them equally
- 31:59detestable as the surrounding Pagan nations.
- 32:03The only difference between Israel and the other nations was
- 32:07Israel's covenant relationship with God.
- 32:10But Israel, having broken the covenant, faced the covenant
- 32:14curses for their spiritual infidelity, and that's found in
- 32:19Deuteronomy chapter 28, verses 15 through 68.
- 32:25Why shake Israel like grain in a sieve?
- 32:29As part of God's judgement, Israel would be shaken all over
- 32:33the landscape. This refers to the scattering of
- 32:37the Israelites, A scattering known as the dispora, that would
- 32:40take place over the following few centuries.
- 32:44How could Amos have changed his tone so abruptly?
- 32:49Prophecy usually included both doom and promise.
- 32:54Also, it's quite possible that time had passed between these
- 32:57two radically different messages.
- 32:59The warning of impending judgment were meant to jar
- 33:01people into a state of alarm and give them one last chance to
- 33:06repent. But offering hope was also part
- 33:10of being a prophet of the God of grace.
- 33:14This double barrelled approach to prophecy, judgment and mercy
- 33:19is evident throughout the Bible. Who is Edom?
- 33:23This may refer to the nation descended from Esau, which was a
- 33:27long standing enemy of Israel. Some think Edom means Adam,
- 33:32referring to all humanity. The 2 words are quite similar in
- 33:36the Hebrew language. Or this could simply mean the
- 33:39remnant of all nations, the Gentiles, would one day come to
- 33:43faith in God, which is how this verse is quoted in the New
- 33:49Testament. What other nations will bear
- 33:52God's name? Every nation whose people turn
- 33:55to faith in Jesus Christ. This is a prophecy that began to
- 34:00be fulfilled shortly after Jesus's death and continues to
- 34:04be fulfilled today. Through Jesus's death.
- 34:07All are invited into a relationship with God.
- 34:12Those who follow Jesus Christ bear God's name.
- 34:18When will God establish Israel permanently?
- 34:21Some believe God plans to do this for the Jews sometime in
- 34:25the future, in the Millennium, the thousand year earthly reign
- 34:29of Jesus Christ. After he returns, the nation of
- 34:33Israel would then finally be restored.
- 34:36Others think this refers to Christ's return, when God's
- 34:40people, those who believe in Christ, both Jews and non Jews,
- 34:43will be permanently settled in a new heaven and a new earth where
- 34:47righteous business dwells. So that concludes the book of
- 34:54Amos, and we'll start a new book next time.
