- 0:00Welcome back to Spy Trader , the podcast that helps you navigate the choppy waters of the stock market .
- 0:06I'm your host , Moneybags Mike , and it's 6 am on Sunday , August 3rd , 2025 , Pacific time .
- 0:14We've got a lot to unpack this morning as we look ahead to what promises to be a very interesting and potentially volatile week for the US stock market .
- 0:23Get ready to roll up your sleeves , because we're diving deep into the data that's going to shape your portfolio .
- 0:30The big headline news this past week , and frankly , the one sending ripples through the entire market , was Friday's incredibly weak July jobs report .
- 0:40Nonfarm payrolls came in at a dismal 73,000 , way below the 110,000 to 115,000 economists were hoping for .
- 0:51And if that wasn't enough to make you spill your coffee , May and June's job growth figures were also revised sharply downward by a combined 258,000 jobs , painting a picture of a much weaker labor market than we previously thought .
- 1:06The unemployment rate also nudged up to 4.2 percent from 4.1 percent in June .
- 1:13This truly signals a notable slowdown in the US labor market .
- 1:18This weak jobs report has completely flipped the script on Federal Reserve policy expectations .
- 1:23Before this report , the Fed was holding firm , keeping interest rates steady at 4.25 percent to 4.50 percent , with Chair Jerome Powell talking about a tight labor market .
- 1:35But now , with this dismal jobs data , market expectations for a September rate cut have soared to over 66 percent , with some analyses even pushing it as high as 82 percent .
- 1:49It's a complete reversal of sentiment .
- 1:51Interestingly , even before this report , two Fed governors , Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman , had already dissented at the July meeting , advocating for a rate cut due to slowing growth and a less dynamic labor market , citing the temporary effects of tariffs on inflation .
- 2:08Speaking of inflation , it's still a concern , with the annual CPI increasing to 2.7 percent in June from 2.4 percent in May 2025 .
- 2:20This uptick is partly because businesses are passing on higher import costs due to new tariffs .
- 2:26And those tariffs , those ongoing trade policies , are another major factor contributing to cost volatility and impacting various sectors .
- 2:36The recent decision to hit trading partners with new tariffs after the August 1st deadline is reigniting concerns about the world economy .
- 2:46Historically , August is also a tricky month for the S&P 500 , often described as rather flat , with an average gain of only 0.2 percent , and some even call it one of the worst months , especially in postelection years .
- 3:01So , what does all this mean for your money ?
- 3:04Well , with this economic slowdown , shifting Fed expectations , and ongoing trade uncertainties , a cautious approach is definitely warranted .
- 3:14For broad market exposure , if you're holding ETFs like the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust , ticker SPY , the iShares CORE S&P 500 ETF , IVV , or the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF , VOO , consider reducing your exposure slightly or hedging against potential downside .
- 3:36The weak jobs report and the potential for a September rate cut suggest underlying economic weakness .
- 3:44While rate cuts can eventually be bullish , the immediate reaction to negative economic news often causes market declines , and tariff uncertainties add to that volatility .
- 3:55On the sector front , let's talk defense .
- 3:58In times of economic uncertainty and market volatility , defensive sectors often outperform .
- 4:04Healthcare has shown resilience , adding the largest number of jobs in July , and Utilities are generally stable .
- 4:12So , I'd suggest considering increasing your exposure to the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLV , and the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLU.Now , on the flip side , I'd be cautious about cyclical sectors .
- 4:29The Energy sector is projected to report the largest yearoveryear earnings decline among S&P 500 sectors for Q2 2025 , down 24 percent , largely due to lower oil prices , with subindustries like Integrated Oil & Gas down 34 percent .
- 4:48Manufacturing , which is key to the Industrials sector , has shown weakness due to trade policies .
- 4:56So , consider reducing exposure or avoiding new positions in the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLE , and the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLI.For Technology , while big names like Nvidia , NVDA , and Amazon , AMZN , have shown strong growth , and the longterm outlook for tech remains strong , the sector can be volatile .
- 5:20For next week , a selective approach is best .
- 5:24If you're optimistic about specific company earnings , like Palantir Technologies , PLTR , due to government contracts and commercial adoption , though it is highly valued , consider those individual stocks .
- 5:37However , broad tech exposure via Invesco QQQ Trust , QQQ , or Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLK , may face headwinds from overall market sentiment .
- 5:51High valuations in some tech companies , coupled with general market cautiousness , could lead to pullbacks even with strong individual company results .
- 6:00Fixed income is looking more attractive now .
- 6:03The increased likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate cut in September makes bonds a compelling option .
- 6:10Lower interest rates typically lead to higher bond prices .
- 6:15So , consider increasing your exposure to bond ETFs like the iShares Core U.S.
- 6:20Aggregate Bond ETF , AGG , or the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF , BND.And finally , Gold .
- 6:29Gold is often seen as a safehaven asset during economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions .
- 6:35While the Fed's decision to hold rates steady might temper immediate upward movement , the overall economic slowdown and potential rate cuts could support gold prices in the medium term .
- 6:47Consider maintaining or slightly increasing your exposure to gold , for example , via SPDR Gold Shares , GLD.Looking ahead , volatility is definitely the name of the game for the upcoming week .
- 7:01We've got key economic data releases like ISM Services Business Activity on August 5th and weekly jobless claims on August 7th .
- 7:11Plus , several Federal Reserve presidents , including Mary Daly and Raphael Bostic , are scheduled to speak , and their comments will be scrutinized for more clues on monetary policy .
- 7:23And of course , keep a close eye on news regarding trade policy and tariffs , as these have a direct impact on various sectors and overall market sentiment .
