- 1:50Speaker 4: can continue.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Fresh off killing a big buck, Randall Williams is here.
- 1:57Speaker 5: Mm hmm, fresh off and nothing, fresh off of nothing,
- 2:02Speaker 5: our breaker, Corey Calkins, I remember you like the Caulkins.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Better works better for me, Corey Caulkins, fresh off of what.
- 2:11Speaker 6: Helping some friends fill their freezers?
- 2:14Speaker 3: Good deal, that's nice deal. Ryan Callahan's you're fresh from
- 2:17Speaker 3: killing a big old grizzy well yeah, pretty fresh, well,
- 2:20Speaker 3: he said, he wants it. He wants to even bigger one.
- 2:23Speaker 5: Well parts of me still smell like.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Wearing you. I've been wearing your waiters around and they're
- 2:28Speaker 3: coated in that grease. They're like extra waterproof. Yeah, the
- 2:33Speaker 3: water doesn't have a chance to get to the waiter
- 2:35Speaker 3: because it's held up by if it gets blocked by
- 2:37Speaker 3: grease before it can touch the waiter.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Yeah, if I may, This seems like a good time
- 2:43Speaker 4: happy birth.
- 2:46Speaker 5: At the point birthday forty three? Are you one forty three? Yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 5: that happened on cool Man eighty six. Yeah, I'm gonna
- 2:58Speaker 5: take to get kicked out of.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Phil's here. He's deep, He's neck deep into cratch It.
- 3:06Speaker 5: The twelfth edition of the Cratchit Report.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Oh dude, I'm licking my lips. So, since this hasn't
- 3:13Speaker 3: released yet, have we already been there?
- 3:16Speaker 7: This comes out December fifteenth, so.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, I've already been Oh and I'm still regularly weird.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Yeah it was good.
- 3:26Speaker 8: Yeah, I got older that night.
- 3:28Speaker 6: I don't remember that.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Phil was the only guy that did any good.
- 3:31Speaker 4: I was on the edge of my seat the whole
- 3:33Speaker 4: time wondering which ghost would come out, and.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Everybody sucked except Phil.
- 3:37Speaker 2: That's what we're doing this year, is we're changing the
- 3:40Speaker 2: order of the we shuffle it every night just to
- 3:42Speaker 2: keep people on their toes.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Yeah, here's the weird This has nothing to do with
- 3:45Speaker 3: anything but just the weird ethics question. So so my
- 3:51Speaker 3: friend Mercer long sends me this year, well, sends me
- 3:54Speaker 3: a pocket knife. Not this sends me a pocket knife
- 3:58Speaker 3: with a Daniel Boone quote. Just has a nice little
- 4:01Speaker 3: friendship gesture, and it's got the quote I was happy
- 4:05Speaker 3: in the midst of dangers and inconveniences, which is a
- 4:09Speaker 3: Boon quote. He sends it to me and I promptly
- 4:12Speaker 3: lose it. Mm hm turkey hunting. So one year later
- 4:17Speaker 3: I go back to where I remember. I remember needing
- 4:21Speaker 3: to fix something on a little knob. One year later,
- 4:27Speaker 3: I go back to the knob, but I can't remember
- 4:29Speaker 3: what knob it was, so I check a couple knobs,
- 4:32Speaker 3: never acquire it. Tell him I lost the knife, the
- 4:35Speaker 3: Dan and Boone knife. He sends me another one. I'm
- 4:39Speaker 3: in Africa and I run into these fellas actually using
- 4:42Speaker 3: one of those friction boards to make a fire. They
- 4:46Speaker 3: got the spindle in the wood, and I want that
- 4:49Speaker 3: thing so bad, but I have nothing to offer for it.
- 4:52Speaker 3: So I take Mercer's gift and trade it, and then
- 4:59Speaker 3: I feel guilty, So then I went and ordered me
- 5:02Speaker 3: up my own. Is that like you know what I'm saying?
- 5:09Speaker 3: So is it a real bind?
- 5:12Speaker 8: If that keeps on giving.
- 5:13Speaker 3: It's like an ethical bind.
- 5:15Speaker 7: What's the value of that knife?
- 5:16Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 5:16Speaker 5: Yeah, but you could also just say, like I appreciated
- 5:19Speaker 5: the gesture so much that I invested in it myself. Yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 5: I bought myself. You know, it's also just about you
- 5:31Speaker 5: and have bought that on your own had he not
- 5:33Speaker 5: started it.
- 5:34Speaker 3: No, no, no, I wouldn't even thought about.
- 5:35Speaker 4: It's also super cool that there's a guy in Africa
- 5:37Speaker 4: going around with a knife with a Daniel Boone quote
- 5:40Speaker 4: on it.
- 5:40Speaker 3: My kid asked my kid, my little one. He kind
- 5:43Speaker 3: of was more. He was into that trade. He liked
- 5:46Speaker 3: the politics of that trade, and he was not too
- 5:48Speaker 3: long ago asking me if I think that he's kept
- 5:51Speaker 3: it sharp and if I think that people have been
- 5:55Speaker 3: asking him about it? And I said yes, Well I
- 5:58Speaker 3: said no and yes, hmm, yeah, because I don't know
- 6:02Speaker 3: how he would. I don't know what he would have
- 6:04Speaker 3: to like, he's probably honing it on a wet rock.
- 6:09Speaker 5: I would think that a big part of their conversation
- 6:12Speaker 5: was like, yeah, great, trade chunk of wood for a knife.
- 6:17Speaker 5: But we also had to sit through a forty minute
- 6:19Speaker 5: explanation of some dude, yeah named Daniel.
- 6:23Speaker 8: It's like I basically gave away.
- 6:24Speaker 3: A book of matches.
- 6:25Speaker 8: You know.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Oh listen, he didn't hesitate.
- 6:30Speaker 7: You both were satisfied afterwards. I think you should double
- 6:34Speaker 7: down on this. Are you familiar with like the real
- 6:35Speaker 7: little red paper clip thing or something someone starts with
- 6:40Speaker 7: like a little red paper clip and they trade that
- 6:42Speaker 7: for a pen, and then they trade that pill.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yeah, my kids always talk about that.
- 6:46Speaker 7: Yeah, whatever, and eventually they end up with a house. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:49Speaker 7: you could do that now, so you would take the
- 6:51Speaker 7: wrong direction. No, I don't think he's doing that. You
- 6:54Speaker 7: both like elevated yourselves with what you received.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Oh like if I came to someone and said, yeah,
- 7:00Speaker 3: this is this genuine, genuine Yes, this is a genuine
- 7:06Speaker 3: h and then you friction board?
- 7:08Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, do you know the backstory of this fiction
- 7:11Speaker 6: be a very valuable friction board.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Well, I got a picture of the guy. He's a
- 7:14Speaker 3: MASSI warrior decked out with a Massi spear, and that's
- 7:19Speaker 3: his friction board. And I got a picture of him
- 7:21Speaker 3: holding the knife.
- 7:22Speaker 7: Okay, it's a good start.
- 7:24Speaker 3: So yeah, man, I'll trade that for what a house?
- 7:26Speaker 4: Well eventually, yeah whatever one ac you're gonna have to start.
- 7:31Speaker 7: To get to. So you know, like from now you're
- 7:34Speaker 7: gonna have an acre somewhere.
- 7:36Speaker 3: You know, a lot of news we haven't covered. We
- 7:41Speaker 3: haven't done a news shown on time. We're gonna cover
- 7:42Speaker 3: off on some interesting news. But but the first bit
- 7:45Speaker 3: of news we haven't talked about on the podcast is, uh,
- 7:49Speaker 3: Kellahan's big news. Kellahn, you want to explain your big news?
- 7:53Speaker 3: Not you, not your bear.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Yeah. I am the incoming CEO at Backcountry Hunters and Angle,
- 8:00Speaker 5: which is is super cool. I start officially January first,
- 8:05Speaker 5: and organization I've volunteered with for over a decade at.
- 8:12Speaker 3: This on the board that long well in various capacities.
- 8:16Speaker 5: In various capacities, Yeah, exactly, yeah, because yeah, I don't know.
- 8:20Speaker 5: There's a lot of rules involving nonprofit boards and how
- 8:26Speaker 5: they function, the by laws, so like you can serve
- 8:29Speaker 5: so long as just a board member at large, and
- 8:32Speaker 5: then you can serve longer if you become a committee
- 8:36Speaker 5: chair or you know, boring stuff like that. But yeah, yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 5: so I'm I'm super excited and very optimistic for the
- 8:47Speaker 5: future of those organizations in general, but BHA specifically, because
- 8:52Speaker 5: I think we got a big voice and a lot
- 8:56Speaker 5: of good things going for us, non partisan participate particularly.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I think you're gonna do a good job.
- 9:02Speaker 8: Man.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Well, thank you very much.
- 9:04Speaker 3: I'm looking forward to it.
- 9:04Speaker 5: A lot to learn, a little scary, a lot of
- 9:06Speaker 5: things I don't know, which was kind.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Of my there's a lot of knobs and switches that
- 9:10Speaker 4: you've never seen exactly from your cockpit here exactly.
- 9:14Speaker 5: And that that's what I told the board when they
- 9:16Speaker 5: asked me if i'd be interested in, like, are you
- 9:18Speaker 5: guys aware of all the things I don't know? Like
- 9:22Speaker 5: Excel spreadsheets, for instance. I hear those are big in
- 9:26Speaker 5: CEO circles. So that that was that was super cool
- 9:31Speaker 5: to walk through that process with everybody. And you definitely
- 9:34Speaker 5: do hear about your faults from a board of people.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Oh really, Oh yeah already you've heard about them. Yes,
- 9:41Speaker 5: they've already told your faults.
- 9:43Speaker 3: We don't have enough time.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, they're like, so we know you're probably not
- 9:48Speaker 5: gonna be good at oh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, and
- 9:51Speaker 5: you're gonna need help with and then eventually you kind
- 9:56Speaker 5: of get around to the good stuff. But we think
- 9:58Speaker 5: you're gonna be really good at and you should be
- 10:01Speaker 5: really good at and and uh yeah, so mostly balanced
- 10:05Speaker 5: each other out. But yeah, that was that was That
- 10:09Speaker 5: was great. So I'm real excited. And then of course
- 10:13Speaker 5: we'll continue to work with all you fellas here, which
- 10:17Speaker 5: is kind of having your cake and eat it too, So.
- 10:20Speaker 3: That will be your mouthpiece. Dude, we need to come
- 10:22Speaker 3: and tell people about something. Come and tell them about it. Yeah,
- 10:25Speaker 3: Cal's report exactly.
- 10:27Speaker 8: Who get to sit in this chair? Next time?
- 10:30Speaker 3: Cal, I get to move up to the important because
- 10:34Speaker 3: always sits in it.
- 10:35Speaker 5: That's gonna be a hard transition for you over the
- 10:38Speaker 5: important chair.
- 10:39Speaker 3: I don't know why he's there right now?
- 10:41Speaker 7: Is the open one when I came in.
- 10:42Speaker 5: He's got a really good story.
- 10:43Speaker 6: He did shoot a big buck.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Oh that's why he's in that chair. Yeah, I got,
- 10:49Speaker 3: I got a bucks, I got, I got, I got
- 10:51Speaker 3: a three pack buck story. I'm gonna tell to Cal's
- 10:53Speaker 3: can talk about his bear and I'm gonna tell about
- 10:54Speaker 3: my three pack buck story. Blood trails. If you got
- 11:00Speaker 3: he's been listening to blood Trails. The podcast it's been
- 11:03Speaker 3: doing great man. A lot of people listening to Blood Trails.
- 11:05Speaker 3: And one thing we get into Blood Trails all the
- 11:09Speaker 3: missing bodies, and what's totally weird about it is Krin
- 11:14Speaker 3: finds this article. Well, let me first. Blood Trails is
- 11:17Speaker 3: a crime series. It's all outdoor like, like murders, missing people,
- 11:24Speaker 3: all the outdoor hunting and fishing twists. So it's like
- 11:28Speaker 3: murder mysteries and other things. Cold cases that involve outdoor characters,
- 11:34Speaker 3: hunting trips, various things. The first one we ever did
- 11:37Speaker 3: was we did one on a guy that was found
- 11:40Speaker 3: by his hunting partners dead shot in the back next
- 11:43Speaker 3: to his turkey decoys. We did one on a guy
- 11:46Speaker 3: and Maine kills a buck, clear tracks in the snow,
- 11:52Speaker 3: drags the buck out to a road. There's tracks in
- 11:55Speaker 3: the snow where a car pulled up, like hey, can
- 11:57Speaker 3: we give you some help. They can tell from trail
- 12:00Speaker 3: action to snow that the guy loaded the buck, that
- 12:03Speaker 3: the buck was loaded into a car, the buck and
- 12:09Speaker 3: the man never to be seen again. There's all these
- 12:11Speaker 3: twisted turns. There's a Blood Trails about a guy guy
- 12:15Speaker 3: in Wisconsin meeting his buddy to go hunting. His car
- 12:21Speaker 3: weirdly turns up with the wheels gone near one of
- 12:24Speaker 3: his hunting spots, but not where he was supposed to
- 12:28Speaker 3: meet his buddy, and not when body never found. So
- 12:36Speaker 3: that's a series you can go subscribe to and listen.
- 12:38Speaker 3: But then here's a crazy thing that Krin sends me,
- 12:40Speaker 3: like a newsblit here, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety
- 12:46Speaker 3: is asking hunters to be extra vigilant during the firearm opening.
- 12:52Speaker 3: This is a news alert right not only looking for deer,
- 12:55Speaker 3: but also for signs of missing people. Basically saying, Hey,
- 13:01Speaker 3: a bunch of people out in the woods, run around
- 13:02Speaker 3: weird places, keep your eyes out. Four discarded clothing in
- 13:10Speaker 3: areas where it doesn't belong, or bones that do not
- 13:15Speaker 3: appear to be from animals, like a little announcement they made.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Do not touch any of the items, Take photographs if possible,
- 13:28Speaker 3: save location on a GPS, drop a pin called cops.
- 13:36Speaker 5: I bet I know where some bodies are disappeared too,
- 13:40Speaker 5: just because I feel like everybody here probably has the
- 13:43Speaker 5: same thought process when you come across certain spots where
- 13:46Speaker 5: you're like, yeah, boy, if I ever had to.
- 13:51Speaker 7: Yeah, when a body does turn up, somewhere. I usually
- 13:53Speaker 7: think the opposite, like that's the best you could do
- 13:57Speaker 7: for hiding a body.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Nor McDonald has a big bit about that, like the Haiti,
- 14:02Speaker 3: the hastily dug grave.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it's a great one.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Yeah, he's got a bit about that where he's like,
- 14:08Speaker 3: if he was gonna kill someone, he'd start out by
- 14:10Speaker 3: digging a really deep hole. Yeah, thoroughly grave. Yeah, because
- 14:17Speaker 3: he said they always leave it as an afterthought. Yeah,
- 14:21Speaker 3: this is where we're combining humor. We're putting in humor
- 14:24Speaker 3: where it doesn't belong. Yeah, missing people, but that's what
- 14:27Speaker 3: comedians do.
- 14:27Speaker 7: This genre of podcasts is like quite popular now and
- 14:31Speaker 7: you know mediators doing its own spin on it, and
- 14:32Speaker 7: there are now multiple examples of podcasters helping solve some
- 14:37Speaker 7: of these crimes that were cold cases. So like listen,
- 14:40Speaker 7: blood trails and maybe something, uh, you know will make
- 14:44Speaker 7: sense for you.
- 14:45Speaker 3: We're gonna do some follow up because we've already had
- 14:47Speaker 3: some interesting things come in there.
- 14:49Speaker 5: It's just just another way the hunting community helps the
- 14:52Speaker 5: general public at large. Service we do for all of
- 14:57Speaker 5: you who don't.
- 15:01Speaker 3: You know what here's one do you know that that
- 15:06Speaker 3: this year Japan has had ten brown bear fatalities. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 3: they've had one hundred. Japan has had one hundred brown
- 15:19Speaker 3: bear attacks, ten fatalities. Wow, listen to this. I don't
- 15:26Speaker 3: want to pull this up. I was pulling up a
- 15:29Speaker 3: news bit about it. You're trying to do it, Corey
- 15:32Speaker 3: put that in near little thing. I'm abou there they
- 15:35Speaker 3: really see here's where news. This is news gone bad.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Play this clip. Philip probably say you can't for some
- 15:39Speaker 3: stupid reason. Yeah, for sure, mister no, no, did you
- 15:44Speaker 3: call your lawyers yet? You know I was reading the
- 15:47Speaker 3: other day that actors aren't artists.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Oh okay, I'll take that. Ye thanks.
- 15:52Speaker 3: That had an opinion piece or it was in the
- 15:55Speaker 3: comments section to a thing, and he was he raised
- 15:57Speaker 3: the rise points. They don't write their own lines, they
- 15:58Speaker 3: don't pick their own costume, they don't do what they
- 16:01Speaker 3: want to do. They gotta do what the director says.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Not artists. I thought about phil.
- 16:05Speaker 2: All right, I don't even have a quippi retort to
- 16:12Speaker 2: that stevel just.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Because no one wrote it for him, that's right, that
- 16:17Speaker 3: was good. Did they have to write it for him
- 16:19Speaker 3: and he had to rehearse it?
- 16:21Speaker 5: Maybe you need to sit in a Dungeons and Dragons
- 16:23Speaker 5: game with Phil. I appreciate his art.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Did you can you pull it up?
- 16:27Speaker 6: That link just goes to gmail.
- 16:30Speaker 5: All right, good deal, but you can google it.
- 16:33Speaker 4: But those brown bear attacks keep everybody, keep everybody entertaining.
- 16:37Speaker 5: H brown bears right like they we we think about
- 16:41Speaker 5: them in the American context. But there who stopped breaking
- 16:43Speaker 5: them all over? You don't have to go all that
- 16:47Speaker 5: far Italy to get attacked by a brown bear. That's
- 16:52Speaker 5: not a place people associate with brown bears.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Here we go to this.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Bears this year and Time reports the government is taking
- 17:04Speaker 5: unusual steps to reduce the threat.
- 17:08Speaker 8: Japan is grappling with the grizzly.
- 17:12Speaker 3: That's all I wanted to include there. What a cheap shot,
- 17:15Speaker 3: clever whoever wrote that Japan is grappling with a grizzly problem.
- 17:21Speaker 8: That's bad?
- 17:24Speaker 3: But my god, Yeah, one hundred attacks and ten ten
- 17:28Speaker 3: like Japan. I'm no geographer. It is not a large island.
- 17:36Speaker 3: The cause, I don't know. I haven't really listened to
- 17:40Speaker 3: many bears, A lot of bears, a lot of people.
- 17:43Speaker 7: Yeah, one of them happened inside a supermarket.
- 17:47Speaker 3: You think like grizzlies. So if you take Alaska in
- 17:50Speaker 3: the lower forty eight. So if you basically Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho,
- 17:56Speaker 3: grizzlies kill a couple of people year max. Yeah, maybe
- 18:01Speaker 3: ten ten in Japan and the hundred attacks, that's wild yep.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Yeah, And they just pull point to Japan has a
- 18:12Speaker 5: hunting culture, it's shrinking, it's aging. I think overall, Japan
- 18:17Speaker 5: is still considered to be way too old. They're trying
- 18:21Speaker 5: to reverse that trend, right, like the population average is aging,
- 18:26Speaker 5: and with that they're losing all sorts of cultural things,
- 18:31Speaker 5: hunting being one of them. And one of the theories
- 18:35Speaker 5: is that you have a disarmed, olding, aging population that
- 18:43Speaker 5: doesn't interact with wildlife the way it historically has, and
- 18:50Speaker 5: the brown bears have figured it out mm hmmm, and
- 18:53Speaker 5: they're they're taking advantage. And there's there's just areas that
- 18:57Speaker 5: villages places, rural commun unities on the outskirts that have
- 19:04Speaker 5: a way smaller population than they historically have. And so
- 19:10Speaker 5: you know, because of that, bears aren't having as much
- 19:14Speaker 5: human interference, but they're interacting with human things and and
- 19:20Speaker 5: that's where the conflict is occurring.
- 19:22Speaker 4: When Steve asked you to fill time, why did you
- 19:25Speaker 4: start talking about Italy when you know everything there.
- 19:28Speaker 8: Is to know about the Japan situation.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Well, I just think that we have had a full
- 19:36Speaker 5: clip back there because I had started writing this thing
- 19:39Speaker 5: about like why people should care about like our disappearing
- 19:44Speaker 5: grasslands in America Bureau of Land Management lands in general,
- 19:49Speaker 5: and how unique the American pronghorn antelope is, and being
- 19:54Speaker 5: fresh off this brown bear hunt, I'm like, you know,
- 19:57Speaker 5: brown bears are amazing, and people think about brown bears
- 20:00Speaker 5: all the time, and like brown bears aren't nearly as American,
- 20:05Speaker 5: you could say, not American.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Like rather circumpolar, right, you know.
- 20:10Speaker 5: And and here's the place that you can find them,
- 20:13Speaker 5: and here's the places where they are, Like I wouldn't
- 20:17Speaker 5: consider them like crazy wild animals, right, And it's like
- 20:21Speaker 5: they're pretty damn close to the Vatican. Yeah, that doesn't
- 20:24Speaker 5: seem to.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Go hand in hand, you know, American.
- 20:30Speaker 7: One of the things they're blaming it on is a
- 20:32Speaker 7: poor acorn harvest, which also happened in twenty twenty three.
- 20:36Speaker 7: So the bears are winding up in places where humans
- 20:40Speaker 7: are steal their food instead.
- 20:42Speaker 3: It's good to have Spencer here, man. Yeah, a lot
- 20:44Speaker 3: of guys come in this room. You know, they're all lazy.
- 20:46Speaker 3: They don't look anything.
- 20:47Speaker 8: Up fine blind Yeah, he's like this guy was his mouth,
- 20:52Speaker 8: he's got some gold.
- 20:53Speaker 3: No about Italy.
- 20:55Speaker 5: That was right, just put artificial intelligence in there.
- 21:00Speaker 6: It sounds like they deployed their self defense forces to
- 21:03Speaker 6: take care of this problem. I don't know of any
- 21:05Speaker 6: update beyond that, though.
- 21:08Speaker 5: They also have a pretty serious bear spray distribution program.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Really yeah, and uh they're the robot dog thing.
- 21:16Speaker 1: There's all.
- 21:19Speaker 5: They're they're getting technology out there and then there you
- 21:22Speaker 5: can borrow cans of bear spray and return them and stuff.
- 21:26Speaker 5: So there's they're working on it.
- 21:28Speaker 3: It's so funny about bear spray culture. I've been noticing
- 21:31Speaker 3: a lot around here bear spray culture. It's like a
- 21:33Speaker 3: whole culture bear. Yeah. If people go it's so funny,
- 21:37Speaker 3: Like people go to a trailhead around here. Let's you're
- 21:40Speaker 3: gonna go hike up to them. Half people hike up
- 21:43Speaker 3: the m hill. Guy can bear spray. There's a lion
- 21:45Speaker 3: up there. Well I don't, but hear me out. Hear
- 21:48Speaker 3: me out on our ring like our ring camera. There's
- 21:51Speaker 3: a bear every two nights. Really, my neighbor has a
- 21:55Speaker 3: bear every night there's I was walking on there. Now,
- 21:59Speaker 3: I was walking aro done by the golf course of
- 22:02Speaker 3: my kids. Bears shit everywhere. Golfers don't have bear spray
- 22:06Speaker 3: when you go out to take your kids to school.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Like when people walk out to take their kids to
- 22:10Speaker 3: school and get in their car, they don't have bear spray.
- 22:14Speaker 8: There's certain activities.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Yeah, why is it that people? Yeah, that's right, that's good.
- 22:20Speaker 3: People bring it according to what they're doing. It's an accessory,
- 22:23Speaker 3: not according to.
- 22:24Speaker 5: What the odds are, like what the bears do to
- 22:27Speaker 5: the Bear Convention of eighteen seventy three.
- 22:32Speaker 3: They're like hiking bear spray being around bears.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Now, the Council of Gallison degreed this. Well, I told
- 22:40Speaker 5: you way back in my construction crew days. This guy
- 22:44Speaker 5: that we worked with, he'd put his family on speakerphone
- 22:47Speaker 5: and they would call because they would often end the
- 22:50Speaker 5: call with now, remember, don't get off the pavement. The
- 22:54Speaker 5: bears don't. They don't like the pavement.
- 23:00Speaker 7: Every two nights, what's that every two nights?
- 23:03Speaker 3: I'm exaggerating a lot. Well, when when the child cherries
- 23:08Speaker 3: come in, Oh, when the child cherry's come in, But
- 23:11Speaker 3: you eat my neighbor who's right there. You should you
- 23:15Speaker 3: should talk to him. I'm not exaggerated a bout my neighbor.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Every call him and ask him some bit. Right now?
- 23:23Speaker 7: Do they mess with garbage lot?
- 23:24Speaker 3: It just comes through eating show cherries, messing with garbage
- 23:27Speaker 3: their day. His wife had to show it off in
- 23:29Speaker 3: the middle of the day, trying to get it out
- 23:30Speaker 3: of there, probably without bear spray.
- 23:32Speaker 4: When we lived in Missoula, we like our house and
- 23:36Speaker 4: our neighbor's house used to be an old orchard, so
- 23:38Speaker 4: there's all these apple trees and plumb trees and everything.
- 23:40Speaker 4: And yeah, there's like two months of the year where
- 23:44Speaker 4: there'd be bears in the trash every night or just
- 23:47Speaker 4: out in the yard and they just roam like the
- 23:50Speaker 4: rattlesnak neighborhood sort of at will.
- 23:53Speaker 8: But nobody's carrying bear spray.
- 23:56Speaker 3: Uh.
- 23:56Speaker 4: He came through somebody's house. Actually, they're like sitting on
- 23:59Speaker 4: the back and a bear came Do you remember that story?
- 24:03Speaker 5: Followed the dog through the house just like came in.
- 24:05Speaker 8: One door and came out the other door.
- 24:08Speaker 7: You know what I learned about Missoula this year that
- 24:10Speaker 7: I bet this room has a lot of input on,
- 24:12Speaker 7: is that the feral horses that live in town that
- 24:17Speaker 7: are so crazy.
- 24:18Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I think the story there is
- 24:21Speaker 5: like outfitter went bust and just cut his pack string lose.
- 24:25Speaker 7: How long ago, I don't know when when I when
- 24:29Speaker 7: I heard that they were like in town, I didn't
- 24:31Speaker 7: think literally in town, like standing.
- 24:32Speaker 4: On it used to be that areas like really grown
- 24:37Speaker 4: in the past ten years. But yeah, it's like it
- 24:40Speaker 4: used to be a more rural that looks more threatening
- 24:43Speaker 4: than a bear.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I shouldn't be there.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Here's a Tennessee guy, Tennessee man has runs into that
- 25:05Speaker 3: problem where you know when you see Giant Bucks where
- 25:07Speaker 3: you're now supposed to chase him. Do you hear about
- 25:09Speaker 3: this guy? So he gets wind of a or he's
- 25:15Speaker 3: probably seeing this giant buck running around Giant Bucks. I mean,
- 25:23Speaker 3: now I'm blocked out of this damn thing. I'm in
- 25:26Speaker 3: the Tennessee. Yeah. So there's this very distinctive buck with
- 25:30Speaker 3: some drop tins and stuff like that, and all of
- 25:32Speaker 3: a sudden, there he is, and he's got it. He's
- 25:34Speaker 3: got pictures of it out well. The prison guard, the
- 25:37Speaker 3: local prison guard says, hey, I know that buck. He
- 25:42Speaker 3: lives at the prison. They go and check this guy's
- 25:49Speaker 3: house out. He's got three bucks he killed on the prison.
- 25:54Speaker 3: What's interesting about the news article in the Tennessee and
- 25:56Speaker 3: is it instead of talking about how big any of
- 25:58Speaker 3: them is, it gives you the combine kind the score
- 26:00Speaker 3: of all three bucks.
- 26:02Speaker 7: Yeah, which and then you have to do one hundred
- 26:05Speaker 7: sixty three inches.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Yeah. So it's like it says he killed three bucks totally, well,
- 26:12Speaker 3: four hundred ninety one inches. If you imagine, like, like,
- 26:17Speaker 3: first off, we'll talk about the story in a minute,
- 26:20Speaker 3: but I just saw if you imagine like your average
- 26:24Speaker 3: person reading the tennesseean, yeah, and you tell them he
- 26:29Speaker 3: killed three bucks.
- 26:32Speaker 7: Totaling four hundred ninety one inches, what.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Is the level of like, oh, you know, like the reader,
- 26:42Speaker 3: what is their level of?
- 26:44Speaker 8: Or the editor was just like this graph is too long,
- 26:48Speaker 8: let's just add them all up.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Yeah. I just kind of get lost in all the
- 26:51Speaker 3: numbers and we talking about how they all the dear
- 26:53Speaker 3: arcas add him up. Yeah, so he killed he kept
- 26:58Speaker 3: quote Oh no, no, this is a quote from the
- 27:02Speaker 3: actual Lauderdale County General Sessions Judge Judge Lovelace like that name,
- 27:11Speaker 3: he said, quote, the three bucks had a combined gross score,
- 27:16Speaker 3: not net quote. The three Bucks had a combined gross
- 27:23Speaker 3: score of four hundred and ninety one and five eighths inches.
- 27:31Speaker 8: This just sounds ripe for a a screenplay.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Yeah, the scheme, the scheme to break into the prison,
- 27:39Speaker 4: taunt the big bucks.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Yeah, fifty three year old man, God man, I can
- 27:44Speaker 3: totally relate to that guy.
- 27:46Speaker 5: It just goes to two years.
- 27:47Speaker 3: I would picture hunted to a prison. It's like a
- 27:51Speaker 3: height where it was to have to break.
- 27:54Speaker 5: I know I shouldn't do this, but for those in
- 27:56Speaker 5: the room, listeners, block your ears. Just watched Corey Caulkins
- 28:01Speaker 5: look this place up and drop not just a pan,
- 28:05Speaker 5: but a white tail buck PM on the correctional facility.
- 28:11Speaker 3: It was more for you.
- 28:12Speaker 8: What is the what does the perimeter look like?
- 28:20Speaker 3: I'm gonna make a movie. It's called Ocean's One. It's
- 28:24Speaker 3: just one dude trying to kill bucks off the prison.
- 28:27Speaker 6: It's a beautiful piece of ground.
- 28:29Speaker 3: It's an amazing he's got some amazing bucks there. That
- 28:32Speaker 3: I appreciate about the article is it's trying to like
- 28:34Speaker 3: it's so the article says, uh, where's this thing?
- 28:39Speaker 5: Is Corey thinking? One day if I ever go to
- 28:41Speaker 5: Tennessee or one day I never get thrown in prison.
- 28:45Speaker 3: Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency Lieutenant Tim Ward, Tennessee Wildlife Resource
- 28:52Speaker 3: Agency Lieutenant Tim Ward heard reports in January that a
- 28:56Speaker 3: fifteen point double drop time than the article includes a
- 29:00Speaker 3: very helpful parenthetical meaning some of the antlers point down
- 29:06Speaker 3: was shot in Lauderdale County. Lieutenant Ward was familiar with
- 29:10Speaker 3: this deer as it had been spotted frequently around the
- 29:14Speaker 3: West Tennessee State Penitentiary. We're hunting is prohibited now if
- 29:19Speaker 3: you had to go to jail, Let's say you're a
- 29:21Speaker 3: big hunter, they throw you into the whoscal. That's worse
- 29:26Speaker 3: than being in jail. As you look out your little
- 29:28Speaker 3: barred window and that's son of a business, you patterned
- 29:35Speaker 3: him out the window.
- 29:36Speaker 5: Also with that description, when you hang a buck up
- 29:39Speaker 5: on your gambrels, are they all drop times? Look at
- 29:46Speaker 5: all the drop on that Look at the drop times
- 29:49Speaker 5: on that buck right there holding him.
- 29:51Speaker 6: Yeah, it looks like it's a chain link fence around
- 29:53Speaker 6: the perimeter. So yeah, I'm sure some inmates were watching
- 29:55Speaker 6: those deer.
- 29:56Speaker 4: I mean, I do think we should offer the disclaimer
- 29:58Speaker 4: that we're all well aware that these deer were likely
- 30:01Speaker 4: outside of the perimeter.
- 30:02Speaker 8: And yeah, it's much more fun to entertain that scenario.
- 30:07Speaker 8: But I just don't think. I don't want to get
- 30:09Speaker 8: a bunch of messages on Instagram saying you idiot.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Yeah, No, I understand. Yeah, you know, like the part
- 30:14Speaker 3: of the prison where the bad guys kind of whisper
- 30:16Speaker 3: and stuff about, like in the yard further crime they're
- 30:20Speaker 3: gonna do you know. Yeah, in the movies, I don't
- 30:23Speaker 3: think that's where the buck knows.
- 30:24Speaker 8: He's not by the he's not by the bench press
- 30:28Speaker 8: in the basketball.
- 30:30Speaker 3: No, he's not there, man, He's off like in the
- 30:32Speaker 3: area where the prisoner gets away. Yeah, exactly where he's
- 30:35Speaker 3: gonna hide.
- 30:35Speaker 8: Where the searchlights shine into.
- 30:37Speaker 3: No, I don't carry bear spray just because there's a
- 30:39Speaker 3: black bear in the vicinity. But if I was hunting there,
- 30:43Speaker 3: because you don't know when a guy's gonna bust the
- 30:45Speaker 3: who's coal, Yeah, and there you are.
- 30:48Speaker 6: I will say this butts up against public land.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Right exactly. But that double drop time there's somebody right
- 30:54Speaker 3: now that's just upset with you, so upset it's so
- 30:58Speaker 3: public knowledge. I mean, he's got he's got a buck.
- 31:00Speaker 3: That's like a beautiful typical, that crazy drop tyner. He's
- 31:05Speaker 3: got the other one with some real junk on it,
- 31:08Speaker 3: some little kickers here and there. They don't explain kickers
- 31:10Speaker 3: in the article.
- 31:12Speaker 5: I I this is embarrassing to say, but I definitely
- 31:16Speaker 5: had a reaction of like, I mean, it's just the
- 31:23Speaker 5: greed man, Like this guy had this little illegal thing
- 31:26Speaker 5: figured out.
- 31:28Speaker 3: I don't know, well, or is he thinking he's like,
- 31:36Speaker 3: here these here's these deer. First off, he's thinking these
- 31:40Speaker 3: people are supposed to be in jail instead of looking
- 31:44Speaker 3: at Giant Bucks.
- 31:46Speaker 6: Ye, take that right away, do you know what I mean?
- 31:49Speaker 3: Like, like they're doing their they committed and now they committed,
- 31:53Speaker 3: should they have the joy heinous crimes? And now they
- 31:56Speaker 3: get to look at Giant Bucks. And I don't m
- 32:00Speaker 3: so that might be what he's thinking.
- 32:01Speaker 4: I'm thinking of casting a Channing Tatum type for the
- 32:04Speaker 4: lead in this film, not a real artist, with someone
- 32:10Speaker 4: with a sense of humor who can also be sort
- 32:12Speaker 4: of a dashing action hero.
- 32:13Speaker 5: Sure, that's I agreed, because the guy he wasn't like.
- 32:20Speaker 5: I have a combined gross amount of antler of four
- 32:23Speaker 5: hundred and ninety one for my secret hunting spot I
- 32:27Speaker 5: should call it quits now, or I shouldn't tell anybody.
- 32:30Speaker 7: He did it successfully enough that he was comfortable getting
- 32:34Speaker 7: two of these deer shoulder mounted, which is like kind
- 32:36Speaker 7: of a high profile thing that happens if you go
- 32:39Speaker 7: get a deer shoulder mounted.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Yeah, you're like, he's not a home folks know.
- 32:44Speaker 8: Yeah, one on the right is a deer that should
- 32:46Speaker 8: be in a on a T shirt.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Clay did one about a guy that killed one on
- 32:52Speaker 3: a military base illegally. He claimed that when he saw
- 32:56Speaker 3: he just lost his mind. Susie. As soon as he
- 33:00Speaker 3: shot it, he said, I said to myself, I'll never
- 33:02Speaker 3: get away with this, but in temporary insanity.
- 33:06Speaker 6: Wow.
- 33:07Speaker 3: We interviewed a guy one time, the game warden from Idaho,
- 33:11Speaker 3: former game He was a game ward at the time. Eric. Uh,
- 33:17Speaker 3: you know they put those robo deer out. They don't
- 33:22Speaker 3: use giants, you use mediums. He was saying, if you
- 33:27Speaker 3: push it to using giants, everyone shoots at it.
- 33:33Speaker 1: So then they want to get the real.
- 33:38Speaker 7: Case.
- 33:39Speaker 3: They use mediums because they're worried that it's like entrapman. Shoo, Yeah,
- 33:43Speaker 3: it's entrapman. You're baiting the trap with two enticing of
- 33:48Speaker 3: a bait, so you bait it with a medium.
- 33:52Speaker 8: Wow makes sense.
- 33:54Speaker 3: You know.
- 33:56Speaker 5: I was working with Jordan Seillers to go back to
- 34:00Speaker 5: blood trails because there's an Idaho judge who's now retired
- 34:05Speaker 5: who several game wardens referred to as a hanging judge
- 34:09Speaker 5: when it came to wildlife crime. Oh, and so I'm
- 34:12Speaker 5: trying to get that fellow track down so Jordan can
- 34:16Speaker 5: talk to him, because I'm like, if that's the case,
- 34:19Speaker 5: I'm sure he's got some fun stories that might fit
- 34:24Speaker 5: for Jordan Sillers.
- 34:25Speaker 3: That's interesting. I have a friend in law enforcement and
- 34:28Speaker 3: he has a heart. He generally has a hard time.
- 34:33Speaker 3: He generally has a hard time with wildlife crimes that
- 34:36Speaker 3: come to juris or wildlife crimes. Yeah, with judges where
- 34:41Speaker 3: a lot of them are like what now a deer?
- 34:45Speaker 3: Like what? Yep? Exactly, I've had to talk about a deer.
- 34:49Speaker 5: Yeah, several conversations with prosecutors, county prosecutors who have known
- 34:54Speaker 5: through friends and family and stuff, who have eventually been like, hey,
- 34:58Speaker 5: can you tell me why when a game word brings
- 35:02Speaker 5: a case into our office that they are so serious
- 35:07Speaker 5: about it?
- 35:11Speaker 3: Because you're not.
- 35:13Speaker 5: Yeah, because it's like, well, by the they've done a
- 35:16Speaker 5: lot of work and they have to like cross this
- 35:20Speaker 5: line of like, Okay, this is consuming a lot of
- 35:24Speaker 5: resources and time, it is worth it, and so they
- 35:27Speaker 5: need it to be worth it to you or else
- 35:30Speaker 5: it's it's a giant waste of time. And they're picking
- 35:33Speaker 5: and choosing like what is going to make the biggest
- 35:36Speaker 5: impact and and and and that's why. And they know
- 35:43Speaker 5: that all these prosecutors are like, oh, here's some truly
- 35:48Speaker 5: gross human stuff drugs or trafficking or you know, you
- 35:53Speaker 5: name it. And they're like, and you're worried about a
- 35:57Speaker 5: white tail deer.
- 35:59Speaker 8: Right that the guy just shot it after dark?
- 36:02Speaker 3: Yeah right, yeah, but so he could have legally killed
- 36:05Speaker 3: it twenty minutes earlier. But but your works he killed it.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Yeah yeah. But then then at the same time, that's
- 36:12Speaker 3: the game wardens mandate. Yeah.
- 36:13Speaker 4: I think we should have like a version of a
- 36:16Speaker 4: military tribunal for wildlife violations.
- 36:21Speaker 5: And who would be on there just old game wardens.
- 36:25Speaker 8: Yeah, like people who get it.
- 36:28Speaker 3: That's a good point, man, Yeah, like change the constitution
- 36:32Speaker 3: and stuff.
- 36:33Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, there's like a traffic court.
- 36:36Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a couple of other tweaks. Yeah, tweaks people
- 36:40Speaker 3: have been talking about in the Constitution. That might be
- 36:42Speaker 3: a good one, while like a little what do you
- 36:44Speaker 3: call when you add on to that sucker amendment?
- 36:47Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I mean a jury of your peers. For
- 36:50Speaker 4: a hunter to be tried by a bunch of non hunters,
- 36:52Speaker 4: I feel like it's not your peers.
- 36:54Speaker 3: More constitutional tourneys. The jury of your peers should be that. Yeah,
- 36:59Speaker 3: your peers. Well they might be like, well, I'm a poacher,
- 37:04Speaker 3: so my peers.
- 37:06Speaker 5: The other important in wildlife crime is there's no intent,
- 37:11Speaker 5: you know, like human crime, it's like, well, obviously they
- 37:15Speaker 5: were intending this because of their these previous actions and things,
- 37:19Speaker 5: and then your witnesses in the woods, don't they never
- 37:24Speaker 5: end up taking the stand right?
- 37:25Speaker 3: Yeah, No, it's true because then you're The question with
- 37:28Speaker 3: wildlife crime too, is like, you know, they always get
- 37:30Speaker 3: into motive. Yeah, what was the motive? He wanted that
- 37:34Speaker 3: big old box. Yeah, he wanted a really big buck.
- 37:41Speaker 3: That's about that.
- 37:42Speaker 8: Yeah, that's what it was.
- 37:44Speaker 7: A couple of backstraps.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Uh, here's one. It's like, you can spend an hour
- 37:51Speaker 3: on this. I'd actually like to spend an hour on this.
- 37:53Speaker 3: So in California. This is a complicated Two former ranch
- 38:02Speaker 3: properties were recently returned to the Tully River Indian Tribe.
- 38:12Speaker 3: The tribe's ancestral lands straddle the foothills of present day
- 38:15Speaker 3: Tulare County. Am I saying that right, Tulair County.
- 38:18Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 38:21Speaker 3: The land return was funded through the California Natural Resources Agency,
- 38:26Speaker 3: the agency's Tribal Nature based Solutions program. So there was
- 38:32Speaker 3: these ranches that were somehow under California control, and they
- 38:38Speaker 3: did a land back thing and granted the ranches to
- 38:41Speaker 3: the tribe. Because the ranches connect the tribal reservation lands
- 38:47Speaker 3: to public lands, to US Forest Service lands, they promptly
- 38:55Speaker 3: turn around and put a bunch of wildlife enhancement efforts
- 39:00Speaker 3: place and start uh to Leelkurd on their land. That's interesting.
- 39:11Speaker 5: Very much, So I will admit I didn't read that one,
- 39:14Speaker 5: but uh, you can.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Spend there's two huge elements here, the land back, the
- 39:21Speaker 3: land back movement. That'd be like Krin's not here. Well,
- 39:25Speaker 3: I think if Krin was here, I'd be telling he
- 39:27Speaker 3: she you know, she's here doing her job. I'm not hunting.
- 39:33Speaker 3: I wondered telling her about how we should do something
- 39:35Speaker 3: on land back.
- 39:36Speaker 5: Is it specifically land back or was it a scenario
- 39:40Speaker 5: where there were the state wanted to get rid of
- 39:43Speaker 5: this stuff for all the reasons states do and there
- 39:47Speaker 5: were several entities in the running. Or was this a
- 39:52Speaker 5: specific agreement with the tribe that had lasted forever.
- 39:56Speaker 3: That's what I don't know. So from San Francisco Gate
- 39:59Speaker 3: dot com, s F dot com, tuliuk a once again
- 40:03Speaker 3: roaming the Sierra Nevada Foothills southwest of Sequoia and Kings
- 40:07Speaker 3: Canyon National Parks after a historic land return that Governor
- 40:13Speaker 3: Gavin Newsom is calling the largest of its kind in
- 40:17Speaker 3: the region's history. The seventeen thy thirty acres, made up
- 40:21Speaker 3: of two former ranch properties, were recently returned to the
- 40:26Speaker 3: Tuley River Indian tribe. Interesting The land return was funded
- 40:32Speaker 3: through the California Natural Resource Agencies Tribal Nature Based Solutions Program,
- 40:37Speaker 3: which partners with tribes across the state to place the
- 40:40Speaker 3: stewardship of ancestral land back in indigenous hands.
- 40:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I definitely fits.
- 40:50Speaker 3: Have you on that language. Mm, so that's a subject
- 40:55Speaker 3: and then tule Elka is a subject. Neither of those
- 40:58Speaker 3: subjects we've really ever taken on the show. We're Karen
- 41:02Speaker 3: here doing her job. I would put that she'd put
- 41:06Speaker 3: that on her little for Phil.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I've already got it jotted.
- 41:09Speaker 3: Down here and it maybe put a sticky note where
- 41:10Speaker 3: she should be sitting right What your your but mate?
- 41:17Speaker 3: What you missed?
- 41:19Speaker 7: She said that you gave her a hall pass to
- 41:21Speaker 7: elk hunt today instead of coming to the podcast.
- 41:24Speaker 8: What was that conversation?
- 41:26Speaker 6: Like?
- 41:26Speaker 3: She texted me? And basically it was like what time yesterday?
- 41:31Speaker 3: It was basically like, are you a good person or
- 41:34Speaker 3: a bad person?
- 41:37Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 41:38Speaker 3: I suppose I could come back if I really needed to.
- 41:42Speaker 6: For the record, I could be hunting right now.
- 41:44Speaker 3: Do you follow me? I supposed to. Well.
- 41:48Speaker 7: When Karin sent out this invite, Cal's response was Krinn,
- 41:52Speaker 7: that is the best day of the mule. Dear rut, No,
- 41:55Speaker 7: it's not November twelve, begged to fight about it. It
- 42:01Speaker 7: is Col's birthday, So me, Randall and Corey will decide
- 42:04Speaker 7: which day is better? Which day is better?
- 42:06Speaker 3: Steve?
- 42:08Speaker 7: Sorry if he says November twelve, what's your answer?
- 42:12Speaker 3: Nineteen?
- 42:13Speaker 7: November nineteen.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Is that because that's when you specifically will be out
- 42:19Speaker 2: out and about and you're just trying to hype yourself.
- 42:22Speaker 3: I'm out in about when I think it's the best day.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Okay, chicken egg situation, here's a good one, Corey.
- 42:31Speaker 7: Which day is better Thanksgiving? Oh wow?
- 42:36Speaker 3: So the deer know what's a Thursday?
- 42:38Speaker 6: And nobody's out there, especially in the afternoon.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Three. It's like Wisconsin. Them the packers are playing dude
- 42:47Speaker 3: yourself on the neighbor's place. Used to be able to
- 42:50Speaker 3: till trail cameras, that's my understanding. I don't know what
- 42:55Speaker 3: the motive. That's what Wisconsin guys say, Like, prior to
- 42:58Speaker 3: trail cams, you could your neighbors, you could drive your
- 43:01Speaker 3: neighbors property during packers games. You never get caught. Now
- 43:06Speaker 3: you can get caught. This is what I've been told
- 43:08Speaker 3: about wisconsinights. It's a hot tip. So this guy was digging.
- 43:19Speaker 3: He was into the deep cuts. He's back listening to
- 43:21Speaker 3: episode seven seven seven. Oh no, what am I saying?
- 43:23Speaker 3: That's not a deep cut? He was listening to a
- 43:26Speaker 3: recent episode. He says, how we were talking about the
- 43:33Speaker 3: South Carolina d n r's use of the term still hunts.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Remember we talked about this random A guy wrote in
- 43:41Speaker 3: he moves to South Carolina and he's reading the South
- 43:43Speaker 3: Carolina rags and he sees that there's there, there's a
- 43:46Speaker 3: thing in the South Carolina deer egs where there's a
- 43:49Speaker 3: tight there's a distinction, a still hunt. He reads that
- 43:55Speaker 3: how most people in America would read it a still
- 43:57Speaker 3: hunt being very slowly, very quietly making your way through
- 44:03Speaker 3: prime deer country, not sitting still. So it's a misnomer.
- 44:08Speaker 3: But like, few steps stop and listen, few steps stop
- 44:11Speaker 3: and listen, that's called still honey. Why that's called still honey,
- 44:13Speaker 3: I don't know. It should be called slow walk hunting,
- 44:15Speaker 3: timber creeping, timber creeping, But still honey. If you go
- 44:18Speaker 3: get like old hunting books, any kind of hunting books, whatever,
- 44:21Speaker 3: that is still honting, slow deliberate travel, few steps, stop
- 44:26Speaker 3: and listen, few steps stop and listen, that's called still hunting.
- 44:28Speaker 5: If you're walking slightly faster and you're Doug Duran, it's
- 44:33Speaker 5: called a moon.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Yes. Well, if there are people stand hunting nearby, you
- 44:42Speaker 3: could spend a long time explaining all these distinctions. Hey,
- 44:45Speaker 3: this guy moves to South Carolina and he's like, you
- 44:47Speaker 3: can only still hunt. He's looking at his rags. This
- 44:49Speaker 3: is still hunting. Season, He no joke, calls the Fishing
- 44:52Speaker 3: Game Agency to be like, why can't you hunt? Why
- 44:55Speaker 3: can't I sit in my tree stand? And they're like, no,
- 44:59Speaker 3: you idiot, still hunting here means hunting, not with dogs. Okay.
- 45:09Speaker 3: A guy writes in here's another one from South Carolina
- 45:12Speaker 3: that kind of like is tricky. You cannot possess any
- 45:17Speaker 3: deer with the head. Sorry, you may not. Okay. Here's
- 45:22Speaker 3: the rule. Possessing any deer with the head detached while
- 45:28Speaker 3: in transit from the point of kill is prohibited, meaning
- 45:34Speaker 3: if you're in South Carolina and you kill one, often
- 45:38Speaker 3: in a swamp, he realized he is not allowed to
- 45:43Speaker 3: part that deer out. You have to take the deer outthole.
- 45:47Speaker 3: You can't transport a deer, and he says, he's wondering,
- 45:50Speaker 3: what if I leave its head attached to like its
- 45:52Speaker 3: front arm by a flap of hide.
- 45:56Speaker 8: Yeah I don't.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Is that a weird one? Yeah, very cannot. You cannot
- 46:02Speaker 3: take a dearer part in the woods, and.
- 46:04Speaker 5: You would have to because there are you know, it's
- 46:06Speaker 5: very random, but there's doze that get little antlers and
- 46:12Speaker 5: your sale doesn't say you need to leave evidence of sex, right, right, Like,
- 46:17Speaker 5: in general, the head would be evidence of sex, but
- 46:20Speaker 5: not always.
- 46:21Speaker 6: That must be what they're referring to.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Well, yeah, but in Montana, evidence of sex doesn't count
- 46:25Speaker 3: the head. Back when it was the rule, they changed
- 46:28Speaker 3: the rule recently and Montana had to be you had
- 46:30Speaker 3: to leave evidence of sex attached. You could remove the genitals,
- 46:35Speaker 3: you can move the that, you could remove the mammories,
- 46:38Speaker 3: the packer, the vulb or whatever. It could all be removed.
- 46:42Speaker 3: You could have the head still attached. You could still
- 46:45Speaker 3: get a ticket.
- 46:46Speaker 7: M m.
- 46:47Speaker 3: Yeah. They were like, the head doesn't tell us enough.
- 46:49Speaker 3: We need to see. I was one time getting.
- 46:52Speaker 5: Evidence of sex defined ass.
- 46:54Speaker 3: I was issued a warning. Shortly after moving to Montana.
- 46:57Speaker 3: I had a game ward and issue me a warning
- 46:59Speaker 3: and it was really nice, and get me a note
- 47:00Speaker 3: in case another game ward and try to get yell
- 47:03Speaker 3: at me for the same thing. Anyways, I'm like, put
- 47:05Speaker 3: the head's on it. He's like, man, doesn't cut it. Yeah,
- 47:11Speaker 3: doesn't cut it. You gotta leave the sexual organs attached.
- 47:14Speaker 3: He doesn't care about that. The head could be gone.
- 47:15Speaker 3: They just want the sexual organs. So in this case,
- 47:19Speaker 3: that's just a weird one to me. So this guy's
- 47:21Speaker 3: lived he's lived elsewhere then moved to South Carolina. So
- 47:24Speaker 3: the way he normally goes about things he can't go about.
- 47:27Speaker 4: The other interesting thing here is like, I know in Montana,
- 47:30Speaker 4: it defies says like or it maybe not in Montana,
- 47:35Speaker 4: but in somewhere you know, they say where you're going.
- 47:38Speaker 4: It's like from the point of kill until where it's processed,
- 47:41Speaker 4: or from point of kill until you get home or whatever.
- 47:44Speaker 4: This is just well in transit from the point of kill.
- 47:47Speaker 4: So could you take it to your buddy's house down
- 47:50Speaker 4: the road then cut the head off right and uh,
- 47:53Speaker 4: and then take it home right?
- 47:54Speaker 5: It's like it no longer from the point of kill.
- 47:56Speaker 4: Yeah, Like it just has a starting point for where
- 47:59Speaker 4: the head can't be attached, but it doesn't have the
- 48:01Speaker 4: end point.
- 48:02Speaker 8: What when can you detach the head.
- 48:04Speaker 4: Or drag it fifty yards right exact Ye, I'm gonna
- 48:07Speaker 4: drag it over there, take a long break.
- 48:09Speaker 8: It's attached to the head.
- 48:11Speaker 5: Steve, a buddy of mine, was also given a warning
- 48:15Speaker 5: for not leaving evidence of sex on a on a
- 48:17Speaker 5: dough that he killed from years ago. Yeah and uh,
- 48:21Speaker 5: And he had like a full on dispute at. This
- 48:25Speaker 5: is at a hunter's check station on the road because
- 48:29Speaker 5: he had left the memories and cut off the teats. Right,
- 48:33Speaker 5: I'd fully skinned.
- 48:34Speaker 3: The deer, left the memory.
- 48:37Speaker 5: Well, that was the the game warden was was in
- 48:40Speaker 5: the wrong on this one. And my buddy had a
- 48:44Speaker 5: biology degree and was like, he's like, I'm not accepting
- 48:48Speaker 5: a warning. He's like, you're wrong.
- 48:53Speaker 7: It's got to be the first time that's ever had.
- 48:54Speaker 5: He's like, this is evidence of sex. He's like, a
- 48:58Speaker 5: teat is a feature, mammory is a gland. It was like,
- 49:03Speaker 5: let's let's how much time do you.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Haring it on? Bring it on? I'm lawyered up. Some
- 49:13Speaker 3: years ago, Montana got a friend of mine joke that
- 49:15Speaker 3: Montana got rid of all the rules that were the
- 49:18Speaker 3: most commonly broken rules. Where Montana ditched. They loosened wanton
- 49:25Speaker 3: waste restrictions yeap, so that you can just breast a
- 49:29Speaker 3: bird out, so you can just breast out game birds
- 49:32Speaker 3: and not have to do the legs. They got rid
- 49:35Speaker 3: of want, they got rid of evidence of sex.
- 49:38Speaker 8: I was attached.
- 49:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I was supportive of the evidence of sex. Move
- 49:45Speaker 3: I was not supportive of the wanton waste loosening.
- 49:49Speaker 6: Yeah, you can leave a bear carcass in the woods.
- 49:51Speaker 3: Now, can you really the whole damn thing?
- 49:55Speaker 5: Hm?
- 49:55Speaker 3: Wouldn't they do that?
- 49:57Speaker 6: You could just take the hide?
- 49:58Speaker 3: No way, No, that's when that happened.
- 50:01Speaker 6: Well, forever there was carcass and hide tags they didn't
- 50:05Speaker 6: give you. Now it's just one tag.
- 50:07Speaker 3: You can get to all the meat. Yeah, you don't
- 50:09Speaker 3: have no, no, no, that's not sure.
- 50:11Speaker 5: Well you don't have to attach a tag to any meat, don't.
- 50:14Speaker 3: I think there still want waste regulations on bears. Hold on,
- 50:17Speaker 3: looked that up.
- 50:18Speaker 7: That's got I'm not going to give out wrong information.
- 50:22Speaker 5: I really don't pay attention to that because I'm bringing
- 50:24Speaker 5: it all out anyway. When we were we were working
- 50:28Speaker 5: with Idaho Fishing Game to get their want waste laws updated,
- 50:33Speaker 5: and I was talking I was getting all the stakeholders together, right,
- 50:36Speaker 5: So I was talking to like Idaho houndsman and trappers
- 50:39Speaker 5: and everybody, and nine of the phone calls I made,
- 50:46Speaker 5: people would be like, wait, now you don't have to
- 50:48Speaker 5: take the meat.
- 50:49Speaker 3: Oh really? Yeah. It was just like.
- 50:53Speaker 5: It seemed like everybody who was really doing it was
- 50:55Speaker 5: taking the meat anyway, which was interesting and very good
- 50:58Speaker 5: to hear.
- 50:59Speaker 3: Yeah, if I was king of the world, I'd make
- 51:01Speaker 3: really strict want sauce. There's there's hunting units in Alaska
- 51:05Speaker 3: where you're obligated to bring out like moose ribs and liver. Yeah,
- 51:10Speaker 3: on the bone. I don't know about liver currently, but
- 51:12Speaker 3: they had some the bone. Yeah, they had somewhere like
- 51:15Speaker 3: you couldn't in certain units you couldn't bone them. But
- 51:19Speaker 3: Alaska does extremes too, Like they have certain units where
- 51:21Speaker 3: you have to destroy the trophy value of a moose.
- 51:25Speaker 3: You have to draw a special tag to keep the antlers. Yeah,
- 51:30Speaker 3: if you're hunting it under under normal like registration rules,
- 51:33Speaker 3: you have to destroy. When we're hunting, was super interesting.
- 51:37Speaker 3: We're hunting this spring, hunting bears the spring. I found
- 51:40Speaker 3: first time in my life I found a moose. I
- 51:45Speaker 3: found a well, you know, you gotta saw. They show
- 51:47Speaker 3: you where you gotta cut through the you gotta cut
- 51:49Speaker 3: through the paddle. And I found a sawed through just
- 51:54Speaker 3: one portion. I found the outer extent, the outer portion
- 51:59Speaker 3: of a sawd through half of paddle. Could you then,
- 52:02Speaker 3: I didn't even know. That's a great question. I did not.
- 52:05Speaker 3: That's a great question. But I didn't even know I
- 52:07Speaker 3: was in one of those units. I'm like, oh my god,
- 52:09Speaker 3: I've never even seen one of these. But here's where
- 52:10Speaker 3: a guy killed one doing a registration hunt and had
- 52:12Speaker 3: to destroy the trophy value of the moose and there
- 52:14Speaker 3: was sowed and half.
- 52:16Speaker 5: That's amazing.
- 52:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it was wild and a pain in the butt.
- 52:19Speaker 5: I was cutting. I made beautiful. One of the things
- 52:24Speaker 5: that really excites me about antelope rad is like they're
- 52:26Speaker 5: just so easy to deal with, and so I bring
- 52:29Speaker 5: bring everything, everything, and I was sawing through the spine
- 52:36Speaker 5: and making like, you know, like actual bone end. State
- 52:41Speaker 5: Cuts made these gorgeous little porterhouses this year, and what
- 52:45Speaker 5: I don't.
- 52:46Speaker 3: Know what that is. I know that it's like a
- 52:47Speaker 3: good thing to order, but I don't know what, Like,
- 52:49Speaker 3: what the hell is the porterhouse?
- 52:50Speaker 5: Well, the porterhouse? Is this the portion where the loin
- 52:53Speaker 5: and the tender loin are you know the loins on
- 52:57Speaker 5: top tender loins under the porterhouse? Yep, yep, So yeah,
- 53:01Speaker 5: one chunk.
- 53:03Speaker 8: No, I just I just knew that.
- 53:05Speaker 4: At Outback Steakhouse, DA used to call the porterhouse the
- 53:07Speaker 4: Melbourne and it was the biggest stick you could get.
- 53:09Speaker 3: A great trivia question for your ass.
- 53:11Speaker 7: I don't think so.
- 53:13Speaker 8: I don't think they call it the do we need to.
- 53:15Speaker 5: Go through the ones that are bad anyhow, and just
- 53:21Speaker 5: cutting through I mean a dinky little antelope. It is
- 53:24Speaker 5: like that was a lot of work with a handsaw.
- 53:27Speaker 5: And then man antlers are hard and cutting through a
- 53:32Speaker 5: moose antler would be a deterrent.
- 53:37Speaker 3: And the end of the butcher was bragging out to
- 53:39Speaker 3: me two days ago. No, wh wasn't she bragging up
- 53:42Speaker 3: to me? She was bragging out to me two days
- 53:44Speaker 3: ago about how fun her band saw is. That's the
- 53:46Speaker 3: word she used. Yeah, she says, it's a lot of fun.
- 53:49Speaker 5: It's a dream.
- 53:50Speaker 3: It's fun to have a band.
- 53:51Speaker 5: It's a dream. Yeah. Way back when, uh, when I
- 53:55Speaker 5: was running around with my old outfitter, we would in
- 53:59Speaker 5: the middle of the day go down and cut beef
- 54:02Speaker 5: in Stevensville at a buddy's butcher shop. And you'd always
- 54:05Speaker 5: end the day by going, Now, you know a job
- 54:08Speaker 5: you don't want to do. But yeah, running steaks through
- 54:12Speaker 5: that band saw is you get all that meat butterflying out?
- 54:15Speaker 3: It's great?
- 54:16Speaker 7: Corey, how's googling?
- 54:17Speaker 6: You're facing conflicting It would be conflicting theg Yeah, well
- 54:23Speaker 6: that's what I'm trying to look up because I knew
- 54:25Speaker 6: it was pretty reach.
- 54:26Speaker 5: The deer and elkregs, Like, I know, there's no longer
- 54:30Speaker 5: anything that mentions rib meat. But you said, what about
- 54:33Speaker 5: neck and shanks?
- 54:34Speaker 3: No, my understanding is no ribs, no neck, no shanks.
- 54:37Speaker 8: It's four quarters, tenderlining, backstrap.
- 54:41Speaker 7: I believe they say tender loin in there.
- 54:44Speaker 8: I believe.
- 54:44Speaker 7: So that's a funny one, Like you gotta take that well, I.
- 54:50Speaker 5: Mean just I have been around some people whose interpretation
- 54:54Speaker 5: of a front quarter.
- 54:57Speaker 3: Yeah, the quarter is.
- 55:01Speaker 5: Like, oh, you're you're leaving. You're basically just taking the
- 55:05Speaker 5: bones out, some fatty bone and some meaty, fatty bones
- 55:09Speaker 5: because they're cutting.
- 55:10Speaker 8: Oh they're cutting.
- 55:10Speaker 6: They take it down to the rib.
- 55:15Speaker 5: No, No, it's just it's a waste. I mean, it's
- 55:17Speaker 5: pure waste. This is the letter of the law and
- 55:20Speaker 5: that's all they care about. And I'm like, that's ridiculous.
- 55:23Speaker 7: Gay Moarten's got to know everything about everything, and like
- 55:26Speaker 7: not just at wildlife crime, but like how it goes.
- 55:29Speaker 7: If you pull over someone for d UI, there got
- 55:32Speaker 7: to be regular cops on top of it. Yep, be
- 55:35Speaker 7: tough stuff, and then and then you know someone asks them, like,
- 55:38Speaker 7: what's that bird over there? It's expected they know that
- 55:41Speaker 7: as well.
- 55:43Speaker 3: It's a huge skill set man, a lout of respect
- 55:45Speaker 3: for the occupation. And also it's like a lot of
- 55:47Speaker 3: those guys kind of come at it because they got
- 55:49Speaker 3: a love of hunting and stuff. And then you make
- 55:51Speaker 3: this commitment where you're just gonna work all through hunting
- 55:53Speaker 3: season and then go up to hunters and have people
- 55:56Speaker 3: be like dismissive and rude. You got to do with
- 56:00Speaker 3: that all the time.
- 56:03Speaker 5: I'm always uh paster in our game wardens, and some
- 56:09Speaker 5: of them are foolish enough to give me their cell
- 56:10Speaker 5: phone numbers, so I'm always calling and text them and stuff.
- 56:13Speaker 5: And I was talking to one last week and he's like, yeah,
- 56:19Speaker 5: I confiscated my fifth animal of the season. And I
- 56:26Speaker 5: didn't really pry, but he said most of those were
- 56:30Speaker 5: all self turn in people who went, oh my god,
- 56:36Speaker 5: shot a buck in the wrong unit, Oh my god,
- 56:39Speaker 5: didn't you know, stuff like that.
- 56:40Speaker 4: So I've got I've got some clarification here. The the
- 56:44Speaker 4: Montana Annotated Code defines for game animals excluding mountain lions,
- 56:52Speaker 4: so including black bears, all of the four quarters above
- 56:56Speaker 4: the hawk, including loin and backstrap, are considered suitable for.
- 56:59Speaker 3: Food above the howk okay, then you gotta do you
- 57:02Speaker 3: gotta keep the shank.
- 57:03Speaker 7: Mm hmmmm is it saying loin or backsdromp strap, loin
- 57:10Speaker 7: and backstrap, So.
- 57:11Speaker 3: They're calling the t loin the loin because the backstrap
- 57:15Speaker 3: is the loin.
- 57:16Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I regress apologies for saying that. I might
- 57:20Speaker 6: have been wrong. Maybe it was thinking mountain lions.
- 57:22Speaker 8: I didn't mean to interject so forcefully, but I didn't.
- 57:26Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I didn't want to say.
- 57:29Speaker 7: Something dude, you know, but I like that no one
- 57:31Speaker 7: knew the law because it's just implied that everyone was gonna,
- 57:34Speaker 7: you know, take out. Why wouldn't you take all that?
- 57:36Speaker 5: Oh man, like all those bird carcasses too. I'm always
- 57:39Speaker 5: making stock and it's not like it's I had a
- 57:42Speaker 5: fella tell me straight faced at the Pheasants Forever Quail
- 57:48Speaker 5: Forever Annual get together, and you're right, what you assume
- 57:52Speaker 5: is just full of bird hunters tell me straight faced
- 57:56Speaker 5: about shooting sage grouse in Montana, and I was like,
- 58:00Speaker 5: oh my gosh, the thighs on sage grouse or something
- 58:03Speaker 5: like the best meat ever. And he's like, Oh, we
- 58:06Speaker 5: didn't take the legs. We didn't have enough room in
- 58:08Speaker 5: the cooler.
- 58:09Speaker 7: Come on, lunch pal.
- 58:13Speaker 5: I don't know how to continue this conversation.
- 58:19Speaker 3: I didn't meet this person, but a friend of there
- 58:24Speaker 3: is a war. There's a trooper in Alaska. The game
- 58:26Speaker 3: words of state troopers, like, there's a there's a state.
- 58:29Speaker 3: There's a sort of a division of state troopers that
- 58:34Speaker 3: handle wildlife, but they're within the state troopers. Someone tell
- 58:37Speaker 3: me there's a there's a I know, I remember in
- 58:39Speaker 3: the story. I don't remember where they worked, but they
- 58:41Speaker 3: were a female state trooper who had a policy on
- 58:44Speaker 3: the moose wanton waste. She would carry, as explained to me,
- 58:51Speaker 3: gallon sized ziplocks. If she goes up to a moose
- 58:57Speaker 3: carcass and she fills that gallon in size zip lock
- 59:01Speaker 3: with good meat off the parts that need to be retained,
- 59:05Speaker 3: that's her threshold interest, that's her personal threshold. When she
- 59:09Speaker 3: gets a gallon sized bag of good meat, you screwed up.
- 59:13Speaker 8: M wow.
- 59:15Speaker 3: I like that.
- 59:16Speaker 8: Yeah, it feels it fast.
- 59:17Speaker 5: Yeah, especially on a moose.
- 59:20Speaker 3: Yeah, if you were sloppy and you see you get
- 59:22Speaker 3: that bag out on a moose. You're like, oh, let's
- 59:25Speaker 3: just don't just don't waste time like I screwed up Saskatchewan.
- 59:32Speaker 3: A Canadian wrote in, they kind of chastise us. Oh,
- 59:39Speaker 3: since you have been targeting Canadian users with your on
- 59:42Speaker 3: x ads, I figured perhaps you'd be interested to learn
- 59:44Speaker 3: something about the challenges we have here.
- 59:48Speaker 5: High and mighty, sitting way up north in the Rockies
- 59:51Speaker 5: fair looking down on us.
- 59:54Speaker 3: I'm gonna I want to read this letter, but I
- 59:56Speaker 3: want to read this letter as a way that's not
- 59:57Speaker 3: going to deliver to her what she wants.
- 59:59Speaker 7: I'm sorry, Saskatchewan now have on x okay. I thought
- 1:00:04Speaker 7: they were saying you target them with your No, she's.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: Saying that that if you're in Canada, you get delivered.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know somehow, I don't know
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: she's getting advertised. She just wants some Canadian coverage, just
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: all okay. But she has the wrong idea about what
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: goes on down here. She's writing in about this. In Saskatchewan,
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: they have a fledgling elk curd, and they don't have
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: a well established widespread elkkurd in the Saskatchewan. It's bull only.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: There are some agricultural producers who are kind of pissed
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: at the elk. So they're opening up a cow season,
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: a seven day cow season. Since they don't do draws,
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: it just becomes a general seven day cow season in
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: some of these areas. She is saying, this has nothing
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: to do with health of the elk, herd, carrying capacity,
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: of the landscape distribution of elk. This is simply a
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: small number of landowners being mad about elk grazing on
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: their property. And she goes on to say, we often
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: look down enviously at how wildlife is managed in the USA,
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: and I just want to say, Catlin, buddy, the city,
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: the City on the Hill, were not. You did not.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: Canada did not invent depredation. It did not. Yeah, Canada
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: did not invent the overpopulated as defined by a handful
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: of agricultural producers. Yeah, that is a I would have said, boy,
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: I sure wish I was, you know, or not. I
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: don't wish that. I sure like it that Canadians don't
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: do that, But sounds that we both have developed the
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: same habits.
- 1:01:53Speaker 7: On X announced in October twenty twenty four that they
- 1:01:57Speaker 7: are now available in Canada, and they show a government lands.
- 1:02:01Speaker 7: They should also show private lands, but not private land ownership.
- 1:02:05Speaker 7: But good for Canadians. I was always under the impression
- 1:02:07Speaker 7: they didn't have on X up there.
- 1:02:10Speaker 8: They caught up with us.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: That's all you got.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: I'm happy for you.
- 1:02:16Speaker 7: My hunting life would be so different without on X,
- 1:02:19Speaker 7: and I can't it's you know, fathom not having on
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: X until a year ago. It'd be way different.
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: It would be different. You want to know how different?
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: Can I tell you a little something. This happened to
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: me last night? You think you're gonna think I'm making
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: this up. On my bookshelves in my office at home,
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: I still have all my Delorm gazzeteers. I mean I
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: had my Delorm gazetteer collection was as wide as this laptop. Yeah.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: I pulled out my old, old for nostalgic purposes. I
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: pulled out my old old Montana one from like the
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: late nineties. I pulled that out because I used to
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: like mark my I used to drop my pins, so
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: to speak, by like drawing on that gazzet here. I
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: pulled that out to put in my like keat like
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: with my dad's war records and stuff like that, and
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: took those and put them in a trash can and
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: it felt naughty. But I'm like, but what are you
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: gonna do with them? You know, like I haven't touched
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: one of those things. I was like, Oh, you can't
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: do that, Like what are you supposed to like? Storm?
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: Like, then you die.
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: I don't think. I don't think you recycle. These are
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: full of staples and your door. I don't think you
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: recycled those. I think you can. It's got a glossy
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: covered metal staples.
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: Well inside the not everything. Oh do you have the
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: fancy ones with the binder and the nat GEO ones that.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: Whatever, I'll put them out. It's not so much where
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: I put them exactly, said, I got rid of them.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: But then here's the thing. If you save them, you're
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: going to die. And the first thing your kids are
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: going to do is throw them away.
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: That's the right way to look at that.
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: I had an interesting phone call over the weekend from
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: a rancher. And you know, a lot of folks are
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: reaching out with the announcement of the incoming CEO stuff,
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: and so I don't want to violate and you trust here,
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: but I got a heads up and said, like there
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: was a recent landowner meeting with Montana Fish, wildlife and
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: parks on and you should be interested to know that
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: there's a renewed push largely by and he was in
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: this meeting by folks who you would call recreational.
- 1:04:42Speaker 8: Ranch amenity ranchers.
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: To increase the number of land owners bull elk tags
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: for the purposes of reducing the elk hurts. And I
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: I was thinking about that, you know, and it was
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: doing a lot of driving over the weekend, and it
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: kind of turns it ties into the Saskatchewan deal. But
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: you know how cult leaders eventually get to the point
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: where they're like, I had a vision, a dream, and
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: I'm gonna do everyone the favor of taking on the
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: sexual burden so nobody else that you other men don't
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: need to worry about it exactly exactly, nobody else has
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: sex with the women except for me.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: I'll handle it, yeah, much as I don't like.
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: To, So you don't. You no longer burden with what
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: comes with that.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: And I'm like, because I alone can handle that heavy exactly,
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: And it's like, should that be the tactic? Here?
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: Is like, thank you so much for taking on the
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: burden of killing the bull elk, so the rest of
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: us don't have to worry about that.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Yeah, you're like, what I like to have was I
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: like to have hundreds of elk move on to my place.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: I don't want anyone to hunt them because it might
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: scare him away, but it does cause a lot of damage.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: So I would like to be able to kill a
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: huge bowl. He seems to be eating a lot.
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: Cows.
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Whenever I look out there, there he is eating. I
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: mean he's bigger, he probably eats more. I just want
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: to get the big one that eats the most.
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: His hoofs are bigger. Yeah, he's like he travels stuff
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: horns get tangled in barbar.
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: All right, Kel gives tell us a little bit about
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: your your grizzly hunt.
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: Boy, There is so much tell It was an amazing hunt.
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: I had been out on the Alaskan Peninsula, you know,
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: pretty darn close to where we were this time in
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: twenty eleven as a packer, and that was a wild experience.
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: And we kill the giant bear that trip. We killed
- 1:07:03Speaker 5: two killed two out of three on that season twenty eleven.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Did you already say that?
- 1:07:10Speaker 8: Yep?
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: So, I mean a long long time ago now, right,
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: But it was an extremely memorable experience because all the
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: things that people talk about on the peninsula like crazy
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: severe weather and very challenging and some some suffering, mostly mental.
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: And we killed this giant brown bear and it is
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: one of those things that I referenced because it's like
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: we killed it a what I would call like a
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: high school athlete, like senior high school athlete type of
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: it's mature, but it's just getting started grizzly bear. And
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: then we killed the like old NFL pro going downhill
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: fast grizzly bears trying to get one more contract. And
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: the skull in comparison, right is like oh species, subspecies
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: really like it is just a dinosaur thing. And that
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: was just very very impressive to me. And then also
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: the physicality that it takes to move through that landscape
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: fast with the muskeg and the brush and then carry
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: out you know what is almost always a big wet
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: hide is hard, really hard, you know.
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: And duncan Gil Chris's book All about Bears, which is
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: true classic. He mentioned some bears being so big. Have
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: you ever seen this, some bears being so big that
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: they cut them at the waist and haul it out.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: In two pieces?
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: Yes, what don't you feel weird doing it, very weird,
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: And have you seen that. I've never seen it, but
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: it's always talked about.
- 1:09:05Speaker 7: You feel like we've seen Klay Nukeomb maybe do that
- 1:09:08Speaker 7: very weird.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: Yeah, the hell's here that he needs to do that.
- 1:09:11Speaker 7: I don't know. That's that sounded familiar to me that if.
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: He's doing he's just doing it to dramatic. It's like
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: when he shoots, it.
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: Should be a big deal because a taxidermist is going
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: to be sewing that thing up no matter what you
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: do with it. But at the same time, it's a
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: really big deal.
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: I've thought of it. If I needed to do it,
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: I would. It would just feel very like really.
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: Yeah, you're cut in half. Yeah, yeah, and the conditions
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: up there like there it's there's always moisture, even on
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: bluebird days, and the bluebird days may not even come
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: during that season.
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: What's one of those hides? Way?
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: God, what was the kind of going estimate? Is like
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: you're you're going to be in like with the skull
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: and the hide and you know it's still got fat
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: on and stuff because you're not fleshing it at the scene.
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: Of the Yeah, paws intact yep.
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: But it's going to be somewhere in that one hundred
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: and fifty pound good god Man range and then through
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: all that brush and everything. Yeah, and then it can
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: it can definitely go heavier.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: Huh. Hence the cut in half.
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: Yeah, so that was in mind. It's a very expensive trip,
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: so I was like, well, one day I'll get back here.
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: But I never thought i'd get back there to actually hunt.
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: I figured out I want to go be a packer
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: again or guide or something.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: And and so.
- 1:10:41Speaker 5: Uh, yeah, we got to do this trip, which was crazy,
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: huge opportunity, once in a lifetime trip, and I was
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: very like I just really wanted to maximize it. And
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: the two guides. We had two guides instead of a
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: guide and a packer the because it's a new area
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: for for this outfit and they wanted to get people
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: more experience on the ground, so we had two guides
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: and and you know, we just kind of had a
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: talk of like, hey, I know oftentimes people aren't like
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: physically or mentally prepared for what this trip can be.
- 1:11:21Speaker 5: Like trust trust me, like my crew, like we're ready
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: to go. We can suffer. We got the mindset to
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: be here and if we got to jog across muskeg
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: and swamp and through brush and stuff to get it done.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: We can do it.
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: And you know, it's kind of like you build up
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: that trust with your brand new friends for the week, right,
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: is a big part of the guidance game. And and
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: I really wanted. I was like, I want a respectable
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: bear with my bow first and foremost, and if I
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: got to get one with a rifle, I want that
- 1:11:59Speaker 5: big giant bear if they're around. And and we got
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: in there two days early, which they really encourage, right,
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: because the travel you never know when a travel day
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: you're actually going to be able to fly.
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: Yeah, like two day's earlier or potentially a week late
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: exactly because the storm comes in.
- 1:12:19Speaker 5: Yeah, and the the spots out there, like it's it's
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: pretty rare to have like an area unless you're right
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: on the beach at low tide where you can get
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: a bigger plane in. So it's all super cub which
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: you know, they're just limited in what they can carry
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: and and wind and conditions and stuff like that. So
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: everything was awesome. We came in on a beautiful blue
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: bird day. I'm making the story way longer. We got
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: got to see all the weather and suffer for a
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: few days, and saw some big giant bears. I think
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: three ultimately one was in like that like super big
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: giant bear category, and then two were in like the
- 1:13:06Speaker 5: big giant bear category.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: One was the outgoing NFL guy exactly.
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: Yep, yeah, yeah, and we I mean we got to
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: see him at spotted him opening morning of the hunt.
- 1:13:20Speaker 5: So the third day that we're there, it's just barely
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: getting light. I look across one of the rivers and
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: here's this bear like curled up in a bed, but
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: look in our direction and you just see like the
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: big dish face kind of lion Maine from that profile
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: shot or not profile head on shot. And I was like, well,
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: look at that bear, and everybody got real excited. I
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: was like, well, we got to make a decision quick,
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: you know, And then ultimately went in there. The bear
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: had gone into the brush already. Seeing them is one thing.
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: Catching up with them another thing, Like you can't really
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: catch up to a bear that's on a destination type walk.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and you're on a coastal plain. You're like, yeah,
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: like river estuaries coming out through willow flats and all their.
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: Flats yep, yeah, and the stuff that you think is
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: like looks like a hayfield is a marsh.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: Yeah, the couple players are you're flying over, You're like,
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: I'm gonna walk over there. I'm gonna walk over there
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: and walk over there. And you land, You're like, man,
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: you're walking anywhere. Yeah, you're not walking anywhere.
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I had told you this. But like one of
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: the most fun things is it's ultra brushy for the
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: bears too, So they are constantly standing up on their
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: hind feet and looking around, and I'm like prairie dogs
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: and brown bears, So I'm like, who would have thought?
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: Who would have thought? The similarities because they're just constantly
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: being like, well, I better get a better look. And
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: so it's just like dead flat, you know, is what
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: the I relief says. And then all of a sudden, it's.
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: Like, oh, he's standing there.
- 1:14:57Speaker 5: Yeah, bears standing there. And then it drops on all
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: fours and it's just totally gone to exist. Yeah, and
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: they're falling all these little creeks side channels that have
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: salmon still spawning up in them, so permanent snowfields behind us,
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: Pacific Ocean out in front of us, Like I mean
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: it's amazing. It's amazing ducks everywhere.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: I was thinking about how the duck hunting was going
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: here because there were so many mallards green heads still
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: out there on the peninsula. Know what the problem is though,
- 1:15:29Speaker 5: Pacific Flyway.
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: They're eating salmon eggs.
- 1:15:32Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I had no idea.
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: Oh dude, it's like eating a sea monster.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: But I was just like, boy, there's a lot of green,
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: like full plumage mallards here, which means like the folks
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: in the Pacific Flyway probably aren't shooting a bunch of
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: mallards right now. Was my thought.
- 1:15:51Speaker 7: Are the salmon eggs like their diet or like a
- 1:15:54Speaker 7: part of their diet?
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: Open that stuff, man, I'm not saying all, but even
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: geese too. They eat a lot of up there to
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: eat a lot of invertebrates, and you eat a lot
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: of washed out salmon eggs, so you'll get their crop.
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: We'll have salmon eggs in it. It just tastes like again,
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: it's rugged, it's rugging. I got a bite that grew
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: up in Southeast Alaska and he said, you know, they tried,
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: tried eventually, just he said, you just don't eventually like
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: you just didn't look at the ducks as like a
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: game bird because you just couldn't get through them. And
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: I've had the same thing every time you eat one
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: of those saltwater estuary in that area Salmon stream ducks.
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: It's like when you go there in September and they're
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: all hanging out the mouth of the stream. Yeah, they're
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: not there on accident.
- 1:16:42Speaker 7: I'm surprised that works its way out of their system
- 1:16:44Speaker 7: by the time they get to us. If it's like
- 1:16:46Speaker 7: that pungent, Yeah, I.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: Think they burned through it quick. I don't know anyhow
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: ducks you saw them check.
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: And there were wolves on the airstrip when we flew in, really,
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: which I immediately was like, well, we're not going to
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: shoot a wolf this trip. I would have been my
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: percentage wise. I'm like, if they weren't, that was my opportunity.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: I couldn't take it. Yeah.
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: Yeah, And we didn't see any wolves. We did a
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: lot of wolf howling after after we got got the bear,
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: but got one really legit perfect stock in with the
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: bow on a big sal and it was one of
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: those things where you're like, oh, that's probably a sow
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: and but it's a mature bear, no cubs. We got
- 1:17:37Speaker 5: to watch her for miles and eventually she came like
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: right into the airstrip and decided to take a nap.
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: Is there such a thing as w NFL.
- 1:17:49Speaker 5: No, Well, you could say, like a women's rugby player
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: there you go, yeah, job, serious athletes, and they're like, man,
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: that's it's not a bear. I'd tell you to kill
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: one day, two or three, I can't remember what it was,
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: but I was just like, guys, this is as close
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: to a bird in the hand situation, and I have
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: a bow, like I want to, we gotta go try.
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: And so that would just worked out magically, that sal
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: because it's like the myth of the dry sow. You
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: never know if they are. But this looked like an
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: old bear and she had no cubs, so math is
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: kind of like she's too old to just be a
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: bad mom probably and lose the cubs. And it's not
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: like kicking cub out season type of thing. So anyway,
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: pretty sure it was a dry sow, and very sure
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: it was an older bear. And then when we got
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: down there, got off the glass and knob, she started
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: working her way towards us into the wind and we
- 1:19:01Speaker 5: and that was one of the funny things, is like
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: the wind was absolutely dead wrong from the glass and knob,
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: but we had put ribbons out on the landing strip
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: so you could see so the pilots could see the
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: wind direction and people on the ground could call wind
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: for the guys flying the supercubs. So you'd glass down
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: at the ribbons and you're like, well, it's doing that
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: down there, which was awesome.
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: But man.
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: Yeah, we got on the ground and I'm looking through
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: this clump of willow out in this like nice kind
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: of hummock of pretty hard tundra, and I'm like, oh,
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: she's coming right right to us. And part of me
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: thinks that she caught a whiff of us and was
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: kind of curious because she like, you know, you were like, well,
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: they didn't read the script. This one like read the
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: script and was like, oh, I'm supposed to arbitrarily pick
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: this bush where three dudes are hiding and go walk
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: past it. And I'm like, oh holy, and they walk
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: so fast it's deceiving right. I'm like, oh my god,
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: this is really happening. So I range something. I jam
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: my binoculars back and my chest back. I kind of
- 1:20:15Speaker 5: look over my shoulder and I look and this bear's
- 1:20:18Speaker 5: I'm like, she's going to walk at twenty yards twenty
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: five at the furthest perfectly broadside. And about the time
- 1:20:27Speaker 5: I think that, she just stands straight up and looks
- 1:20:30Speaker 5: over the top of the bush at us and then
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: drops down and spins and walks out of oh man,
- 1:20:39Speaker 5: And I was I had enough time to be like, well,
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: I don't really want to shoot her in the chest
- 1:20:48Speaker 5: because I want lungs. Just kind of playing the math game.
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: And I'm just like not comfortable with like where that
- 1:20:56Speaker 5: heart is right there?
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: Is that not a good shot for archery.
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: I don't think it's a good shot. Like there's a
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: lot of cavity there that.
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: I'm standing up. I just feel like everything's on full display. Man,
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: I know. And you're gonna have good blood because the
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: hole is gonna be in the bottom.
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: The holes in the bottom.
- 1:21:13Speaker 7: And they make a lot of three D targets.
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: They make a targets.
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: Because that appeals to a certain human.
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: Well here's something fun. I never hit those. That's what
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: made that so. When I was at the Shields Archery
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: University in South Dakota this year, we have that stupid target.
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: I didn't hit it. I mean I hit it, I
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: just didn'thit it where I was supposed to. So anyway
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: was what you were after. But it was enough of
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: a like she stood up and I looked at her
- 1:21:39Speaker 5: and you could just see the scars on her face,
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: and that was just an amazing thing. And she turns
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: around and everybody's like, whoa, whoa. That was a hell
- 1:21:50Speaker 5: of an experience. And she gets out there to sixty
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: yards and I'm like trying to like mouse squeal at her, like.
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: Trying to make kiss yes and trying to like get.
- 1:22:00Speaker 5: Her to stop. And she stops at sixty and like
- 1:22:06Speaker 5: looks back at us and just does this full mouth,
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: sleepy ass yawn tongue all the way out and then
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: turns and just cruises on. I was like, well, it
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: wasn't a heart thumping moment for her, obviously, so uh,
- 1:22:25Speaker 5: but that was just super cool.
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: She didn't think it was super cool to see you guys.
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: Like her. Her pulse didn't quicken. She's just like sit,
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: stood up, looked over the top. So that was cool.
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: And then yeah, we just got like pummeled with rain
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: and wind and we were underneath the tart for like
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: thirteen hours, and right at dark, the it like light
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: lightens up a little bit, so it's like misty rain
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: instead of like full on nasty ran birds start blowing
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: up in the side channel where we had seen the
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: big bear opening morning.
- 1:22:58Speaker 3: That tells you one stern in there.
- 1:22:59Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, yep. Like so the seagulls start.
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: Is it the bears spooking the goals or the goals
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: follow the bear.
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: I think it's the goals are because at this point
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: you could tell from all the salmon carcasses they're not
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: eating fish. They're eating the brain and they're ripping out the.
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: So the birds hang out to get the all the
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: eggs that.
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: Are flying around, and when you're walking on those streams,
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: you know, it just smells like ultra death rancid and
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: there's eggs everywhere, and.
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: That's a very hard smell to be around for days. Oni.
- 1:23:31Speaker 7: Yeah, Yeah, they just go for the brain.
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: So early in the season, when the fish start coming in,
- 1:23:36Speaker 5: they'll eat the whole fish. And then as the land
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: of plenty occurs, they're like laying on the bank, like
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: snagging the ones that they want as they come by,
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: and they're they're searching out these zones. We saw some
- 1:23:53Speaker 5: amazing bear fishing activity, but they're searching out these zones
- 1:23:56Speaker 5: where it's like the easiest possible things like the side
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: channels where the fish are going through skinny water.
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: And I've seen black bears duke it out over who
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: gets to be in the sweet spot and aligne form
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: a line form where like you come out, they take
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: their turn, the big mean one gets what it's after,
- 1:24:19Speaker 3: and then the next guy runs out to try to
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: get a minute in the spot.
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: Yeah, and you know, I was like, well, this isn't
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: a good idea because we're going to be in a
- 1:24:30Speaker 5: situation where we don't like get to judge like it's
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: it's gonna be really quick if it happens. It's it's
- 1:24:36Speaker 5: getting dark, it's foggy. I grabbed the rifle and we
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: trucked out out there, because you also just want to
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: move and do something at the end of thirteen hours
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: in the rain underneath the tire preak. Yeah, and everybody did.
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: So we go out there, stand on this gravel bar.
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: It's like a fifteen minute walk from camp, and we're
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: looking and immediately you're like, yeah, we're not gonna be
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: able to see anything like two hundred yards. It's like
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: foggy and stuff in that side channel. And again like
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: I want to, like, if I'm gonna shoot it with
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: the rifle, I want to be a big ass bear.
- 1:25:13Speaker 5: And I'm like, we kind of do a little wrap
- 1:25:16Speaker 5: up scene and I'm like, all right this, and then
- 1:25:20Speaker 5: let's go go back to the shack and we take
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: like five steps and then all this crashing and water splashing,
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: and here comes this cow moose charging across the river
- 1:25:32Speaker 5: right in front of us, stops at forty yards. She's
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: huffing and puffing and blowing and her eyeballs are crazy,
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: and her head's on a swivel, and she sees us
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: and she's panicked, and then trucks back across the river.
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: And the guy's like she's getting chased by a bear, Like, ah, yeah, maybe,
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: And so I kind of recount that to dirt Meth.
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: Garrett Smith's around the camera. I'm like, hey, this is
- 1:25:58Speaker 5: what happened. And now we're we're really heading back and
- 1:26:01Speaker 5: then splashing and crashing, and I look and here comes
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: this brown bear trucking across the river. And so at
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: this point I got around in the chamber and both
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: guides are there too, right, like, there's a three seventy
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: five here and a three seventy five on both my shoulders.
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: Garrett's behind us. The bear comes ripping across the river,
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: same deer deal, crashing and water flying, and it hits
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: that spot where the cow moose was standing. And at
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: this point, Kyle on my right hand side is going,
- 1:26:39Speaker 5: it's your call, it's your call, it's your call. And
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: I'm like, okay, like this isn't like the bear I
- 1:26:46Speaker 5: want with a rifle. And I'm like, I'm ready in
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: case things get crazy serious, but I mean it is realistically,
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: it's plenty serious. It's forty yards like they can move fast,
- 1:27:01Speaker 5: you know. And that bear kind of like drops its
- 1:27:04Speaker 5: shoulder and turns its head, and Brando on my left goes, you.
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: Better shoot every barth.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: And you know, I'm like.
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: God, and I shoot and the bear dives into the brush.
- 1:27:23Speaker 5: Kyle shoots one more time, and now I'm like, okay,
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: now we got a situation on our hands. Like I
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: know I thumped this bear. I'm pretty sure Kyle got
- 1:27:38Speaker 5: another shot in there too, But it's in this like
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: now it's dark and it is in this just dripping
- 1:27:45Speaker 5: wet alder hell hell hole. But we heard a death
- 1:27:50Speaker 5: mone right then too. But I mean it's fifteen twenty
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: yards type of distance, and your headlamp is very necessary
- 1:27:59Speaker 5: but at the same time as just like reflecting light
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: back at you. So you're kind of like doing this.
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: Like thing that moisture.
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: Yeah, and you got your guns out right, and it
- 1:28:08Speaker 5: is like it's foggy and crappy and the whole thing.
- 1:28:12Speaker 5: And I'm like, okay, guys, it's like, got guns, it's dark,
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: got a bear in here, Like what's our plan? And
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: we start easing into this thing and blood trailing and
- 1:28:25Speaker 5: I can tell Garrett Smith's having no fun at all.
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: That made Dirt nervous.
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: He told me, he goes cal I was scared. It's like, okay,
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: good to know. And and then yeah, here's this bear
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: piled up in there and dead dead yeah, which was
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: which was great, but it was you know, like it's
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: in a just a total willow hole and h then
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: you're thinking about all the other bears around, because we
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: had seen so many bears that it's not like this
- 1:29:07Speaker 5: is the one. Well, that day that we flew in
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: was the first break in the weather in like the
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: entire peninsula season, including moose. And you know, I had
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: friends up there too, like Adam and Brenda Weatherby were
- 1:29:20Speaker 5: up there and they had a horrific time weather wise
- 1:29:24Speaker 5: for moose season which just ended, and then brown bear
- 1:29:27Speaker 5: season starts and there's a little gap in between. And
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: so this was like the first nice day and we
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: probably saw thirty bears and I would say probably like
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: seventeen ish unique bears, Like there were a lot of
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: cow soals and cubs running around that day.
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: But like.
- 1:29:45Speaker 5: You very fast got the impression like, oh my god,
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: this is a high density bear situation, right, because they're
- 1:29:51Speaker 5: not spread out, because the the salmon spawning activity happens
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: like in a relatively small area, and the river and
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: the creeks really aren't that long, right. It's like you
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: can see the glacial snow situation up here, and the
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: Pacific's right here. It's like you can hike to the
- 1:30:13Speaker 5: head the very headwater in a hard day, you know,
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: from from the ocean. So it's a pretty concentrated situe compressed. Yeah,
- 1:30:23Speaker 5: So you know, I I really think safety wise, like
- 1:30:29Speaker 5: totally made the right call. You don't get that much
- 1:30:33Speaker 5: time to decide and things can change right away. But
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: as I said, I was like, there's no such thing
- 1:30:43Speaker 5: as almost getting charged. So I don't want anybody saying
- 1:30:46Speaker 5: we almost got charged. It's like he almost you do
- 1:30:48Speaker 5: or you don't. That's that's all.
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: That's all unless you interview the bear.
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: You can interview the bear. And he was like, oh,
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: I was coming after.
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: Your ass changed my mind at the last minute, almost
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: charged you.
- 1:30:59Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly. Yeah, But it's not like that big giant
- 1:31:06Speaker 5: bear that was like the ultimate goal or the or
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: the bear with the bow. But it is a totally
- 1:31:11Speaker 5: badass animal and and very very appreciative of the experience
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: and and everything. And and I did some cooking in
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: camp for those guys, and you know, big stigma around
- 1:31:31Speaker 5: those bears. The meat, I thought the meat was very good.
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: The context really does matter, like meat in camp, when
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: everybody is just coated in grizzly bear fat that smells
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: like fish, and then the the clean error outside of
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: you and the human stank and the bear stank is
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: decaying fish and just general decay. It's called the miasma
- 1:31:56Speaker 5: kind of kind of taints your taste buds.
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: Everything tastes like a rotten fish.
- 1:32:02Speaker 5: Yeah, but but I think the I think the bear
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: is good. The bear is good. And I cleaned up
- 1:32:09Speaker 5: all that meat when I got at home.
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: Can you can you give me a chunk of the meat.
- 1:32:13Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, So I got a brisket and front shoulder
- 1:32:18Speaker 5: and a hind quarter and then we left.
- 1:32:22Speaker 8: And the tongue and a tongue, yeah, I'll pass on that.
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: I just want the meat. I just want to try
- 1:32:26Speaker 3: the meat.
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: It's a different type of tongue too.
- 1:32:28Speaker 8: You can imatin.
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: It's like a it's like a big dog tongue.
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: I'm like a want yeah, yeah, you.
- 1:32:37Speaker 7: Do want to over ask take his one tongue.
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: I just want a nice little I want like like
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: a just I want to have the fishy bears. I
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: want to have the like fall fish bear, brown bear
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: chunk of meat, not an odd ball cutting right. Yeah,
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: I don't want.
- 1:32:53Speaker 5: I will tell you that the difference between the spring bears,
- 1:32:57Speaker 5: the two that I've been around for the hiding and fleshing,
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: and this fall bear is like it would have taken
- 1:33:07Speaker 5: like some fortitude to be like, Okay, I'm gonna cut
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: off some big chunks of meat off this spring bear
- 1:33:15Speaker 5: and cook it and eat it because it's a totally
- 1:33:19Speaker 5: different animal. Like what I saw and on that spring
- 1:33:22Speaker 5: hunt is like they're they're emaciated. That fat is not white,
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: it's like yellow and kind of hard, and they and
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: the smell is way way more just generally rancid. It's
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: like an ultra concentrated rotten fish. And then the the
- 1:33:42Speaker 5: freshnet like immediately like you're looking at the fat, You're like, oh,
- 1:33:45Speaker 5: that's beautiful. You look the meat, You're like, the meat
- 1:33:48Speaker 5: is beautiful, and then you just kind of have like
- 1:33:51Speaker 5: this different smell to deal with. Ye I made, you know,
- 1:33:57Speaker 5: it's like that guard piece of meat. But I'm sure
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: it has a real name on the front shoulder that
- 1:34:04Speaker 5: you know, he typically just throwing the grind pile. When
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: I was cleaning that up back here, I just took
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: that and sliced it real thin and made a stir fry,
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: and I thought it was like fantastic. Really, I did
- 1:34:15Speaker 5: not put fish sauce in my in my sturfry, and
- 1:34:19Speaker 5: he just kind of like, you know, just a preemptive step.
- 1:34:27Speaker 5: But I thought, yeah, fantastic, And I fed it to
- 1:34:30Speaker 5: folks at the at the Baja office, and I will
- 1:34:33Speaker 5: tell you like people were like, Oh, that's great, and
- 1:34:35Speaker 5: then some people were like, I would like the Sturfry
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: sauce recipe, not the grizzly bear recipe. So yeah, hell
- 1:34:45Speaker 5: of a trip, hell of a trip.
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: Kind of jealous of that?
- 1:34:49Speaker 5: You should be? You should be, I mean, but it
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: is definitely just not Jason Rarick was on that trip, right,
- 1:34:56Speaker 5: so he doesn't do a lot of those types of adventures.
- 1:34:59Speaker 5: And and I are going to do a little recap
- 1:35:01Speaker 5: podcast on that because I really want his two cents.
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:35:05Speaker 5: It's just like not a recreational spot, right, Like even
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: the Alaska Natives and the Alaskans, they don't like go
- 1:35:16Speaker 5: out there just to hang out. It's like a purpose
- 1:35:19Speaker 5: driven destination, you know. So it it like it's a
- 1:35:23Speaker 5: harsh environment. Yeah, yeah, thanks for the report. Yeah, it
- 1:35:29Speaker 5: turned out longer than I thought it would be, but
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: it's great.
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: I didn't tell you guys about did I did? I
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: Were we recording when I tease the Tony Peters some
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: white tailed deer thing?
- 1:35:41Speaker 8: No, but you asked us to ask you about it?
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: Oh can you ask me?
- 1:35:45Speaker 4: Yeah, what was the thing you said about you were
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: going to say earlier about Tony Peterson, but then didn't say.
- 1:35:51Speaker 5: Said ask me about talking?
- 1:35:55Speaker 8: Does he not care about Well?
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: No, I've hunted white tales with Tony Peterson two times now, Okay,
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: I hunted public ground in Oklahoma with Tony Peterson, and
- 1:36:06Speaker 3: I hunted private ground in Nebraska with Tony Peterson. Tony
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: Peterson has an amazing ability to determine where a buck
- 1:36:21Speaker 3: is gonna step hmm, meaning the kind of what I
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: picked up fro him. The difference from when I was
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: a kid bow hunting white tails of Michigan before I
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: moved away. You would like we would optimize growing up.
- 1:36:34Speaker 3: You would optimize for like, where would I be to
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: see a lot of deer activity? Because if I'm seeing
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: a lot of deer activity, then it seems to me
- 1:36:41Speaker 3: like there's a greater chance that one will come by. Right.
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: That dude sets up to have with one objective in mind.
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: It's where will you have a buck twenty yards away broadside?
- 1:37:04Speaker 3: Nothing else matters. He will set you up where you
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: can't see a patch or ground bigger than that muskox hide.
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: But he is like a buck will come and stand
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: in front of that muskox hide, and they do, and
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: they do It's like he has got a phenomenal sense
- 1:37:28Speaker 3: of like, you know, wind whatever, how they're gonna travel,
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: when they're gonna travel, where they're gonna come from, they're
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: gonna come from the right, whatever. It just it's like
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: it's kind of uncanny, just and it's it's like it's myopic.
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: You know, it's where where where will he be? Twenty
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: yards away broadside.
- 1:37:48Speaker 7: My elevator pitch for Tony. I've worked with dozens of
- 1:37:52Speaker 7: like professional, really good whitetail hunters. I've interviewed hundreds of
- 1:37:56Speaker 7: them from working at outdoor magazines and hosting Wired to
- 1:38:00Speaker 7: Hunt r redfresh Tony is the best public land bowhunter
- 1:38:03Speaker 7: I've ever met. I just like, don't think there's many
- 1:38:06Speaker 7: people better than him on the continent. It's like special
- 1:38:09Speaker 7: what he can do when you know, starting at e
- 1:38:12Speaker 7: scouting and then showing up there in person and just
- 1:38:15Speaker 7: killing a buck. You know, very few people can do
- 1:38:18Speaker 7: it like him.
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it's I kind of like I start to kind
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: of see, like I kind of get what he's looking at.
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: We're hunting my neighbor, and my neighbor even said to
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: me after he goes, man, what do you like? What
- 1:38:32Speaker 3: what would we have done? What do you think would
- 1:38:34Speaker 3: have happened with? What would we have done? I said,
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: I don't know, man, we would like I don't hunted scrapes,
- 1:38:41Speaker 3: but I know whatever, like a lot of tracks here, yeah,
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: or probably would been like yeah, sit here because you
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: can see what's going on or whatever. It's just it's funny.
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: He just like doesn't care about anything other than like
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: where is the spot where the buck And then the
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: other thing he's just dogmatic about is he's got his
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: north wind spots, his south wind spots, his east wind spots,
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: his western spots, his southeast wind spots, and there's in
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: that that is determinative. H Like, there is no you,
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: there's no room in his mind for like wishful thinking
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: like well, you know the wind's not great, but you know,
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: you get into that little child like you know where
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: you want, you know where you want to be so
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: bad marginal wind and then the winds like kind of off.
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: But some part you're like, well the wind's bad, but
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: it's not so bad that it doesn't like make up
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: for the good. It's just done. Yeah, you don't even
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: talk about that spot. You don't talk about that spot
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: unless the wind is absolutely perfect for that spot. You
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: don't even look at it on the map. It's not
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: an option.
- 1:40:03Speaker 5: Back when I was in my Archriol Guidan days, I
- 1:40:07Speaker 5: would have a talk with with my guests my clients
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: on setting up in spots. You don't want to set
- 1:40:17Speaker 5: up in a spot where you can view nature, because
- 1:40:21Speaker 5: but I kind of do, because you is to kill nature.
- 1:40:24Speaker 5: Like you need to set up in a spot where
- 1:40:26Speaker 5: you're going to kill nature, not view nature.
- 1:40:29Speaker 7: That's the thing you have to like fight when you
- 1:40:30Speaker 7: are deciding where to sit.
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: And I would curse him. I'd get up because he
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: had gone to set stands and I get there, like,
- 1:40:37Speaker 3: oh my god, it's such a Tony Peterson spot. Like
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: you can't see a thing. You can't see a thing,
- 1:40:44Speaker 3: and you better be ready. Yeah, you see it going.
- 1:40:52Speaker 7: Something those guys have in common is like they haunt
- 1:40:55Speaker 7: a lot of spots that are top pinned territory. Were like,
- 1:40:58Speaker 7: you know, you wouldn't there's no scenario where you'd need
- 1:41:00Speaker 7: to look at your second pin.
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: On the bow. Oh yeah, he's not talking about sneaking
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: one in at forty. It's like he wants deer in
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: your lap. Yeah, yeah, no, I get it. The spots
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: he set up, Yeah, you're not. You don't get up
- 1:41:14Speaker 3: and like starts range finding different things. It's like, dude,
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: you're like, if you want range, find some stuff at
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: the outer edge of your view. It's like twenty two yards,
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: twenty two yards, twenty three yards?
- 1:41:24Speaker 5: What what height?
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: Low? No way that kills me. M Yeah, his setups
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: are low interesting and he could have the world's greatest
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: tree ten feet away. But it's not like he like
- 1:41:42Speaker 3: a great where you'd be like watching, Yeah you did
- 1:41:44Speaker 3: watching ducks out in the slew, you know whatever, you're
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: like ten feet over that way. He doesn't care, dude,
- 1:41:51Speaker 3: he doesn't care.
- 1:41:52Speaker 7: What is Tony bad at? Because you had you observe something,
- 1:41:56Speaker 7: Oh okay, enjoying the He's not making a nature documentary.
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: He's bad at wildlife viewing. We're not bad at him.
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: Just he likes birds and stuff. But no, he's not.
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: His setups aren't meant to be that. It's a great
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: place to hang out. But dude, I like, after we went,
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: you know, we got like a buck on day one,
- 1:42:20Speaker 3: we got a buck on day two, we got a
- 1:42:22Speaker 3: buck on day four. They're all twenty yard shots, all
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: twenty yard shots all broad side, And after that, I
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: was like, I get it, I get it.
- 1:42:31Speaker 7: I haven't seen it, because that's.
- 1:42:32Speaker 5: A pretty good success for Yeah.
- 1:42:35Speaker 7: I haven't seen the deer you and your neighbor killed,
- 1:42:37Speaker 7: but I saw the one Tony killed, a very nice one.
- 1:42:40Speaker 7: What what were those deer like?
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: At eight points? They went progressively smaller? My neighbor got
- 1:42:47Speaker 3: a nice one, you know, like a nice like wow,
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: I'll show you a picture of mine. It's like a
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: like an eight an ear wide shorter timed eight.
- 1:42:57Speaker 7: Very efficient kill three bucks in four days.
- 1:43:00Speaker 5: Yeah, And then does Tony entertain at all, like on
- 1:43:05Speaker 5: a trip like that when you go you know what
- 1:43:08Speaker 5: I would entertained?
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: Like stuff.
- 1:43:12Speaker 8: Advertisers before dinner?
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: You give him.
- 1:43:17Speaker 5: Like you know what I would have done?
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: Oh? You not interested?
- 1:43:22Speaker 5: He's like, you're not, You're so marble below on my level.
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: Yeah, But I I like defer because because I would,
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: I just openly defer to him in that space. You know,
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: if we're doing something like you know, if we're doing
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: other kinds of things, I wouldn't you know, like there's
- 1:43:39Speaker 3: other outdoor activities where I might not care.
- 1:43:43Speaker 8: At already be dismissive and hostile to know.
- 1:43:46Speaker 3: I'm like, hey, what do you think? What do you think?
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: Because I just I appreciate his way of looking at things.
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: So he was in the driver's seat. He was in
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: the driver's seat. He knew that I have a preference
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: for trees over being underground, and I'd say, if it's sixes,
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: I like to be in a tree. And he that
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: probably like factor didn't do his head a little bit. Yeah,
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: but it's so funny, dude, Like the one I got
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: came from there, came from the direction. It came from
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: the direction he imagined it coming from on the trail.
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: He imagined it walking on Uh. I remember even saying
- 1:44:23Speaker 3: like talking about at that tight, when it's that tight,
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: like trying to get your bow back. He's like, oh,
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: this time of year is so distracted. You know. I
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: see it coming, and I'm I'm not gonna draw till
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: he's underneath me. I just catch him coming like from
- 1:44:35Speaker 3: the right. You hear him or see him first? No, didn't.
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: It was pretty windy. Didn't see it. Didn't didn't hear
- 1:44:40Speaker 3: him see him? Like here he is. He just put
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: he's like ten steps away from being underneath me. I remember,
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: and I was just standing there ready, sorry, seated, ready,
- 1:44:48Speaker 3: but I could shoot that way seated, And where did
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: the deer stop? Well, I was like, it was so tight.
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: I'm like, there's no way to get my bow back.
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: He's gonna stop when I draw, so I'm not to draw.
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: So he's in my pocket and he gets in my
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: pocket and draw and I draw, and somehow miraculously he
- 1:45:06Speaker 3: doesn't see me draw, which I couldn't believe. So then
- 1:45:10Speaker 3: I just made a little But I was already I
- 1:45:14Speaker 3: was for a minute entertaining the idea. He's walking so like,
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: kind of slow with his nose on the ground. I
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: was entertained for a minute just shooting like that.
- 1:45:21Speaker 8: Dude.
- 1:45:21Speaker 3: It's like it's like right where, right where? Yeah, right
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: on the edge of what I could see. Now, It's cool.
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: He's got like a it's a cool skill set, man,
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: it's a cool skill set. All those years, like we
- 1:45:33Speaker 3: would when I was, you know, twelve year old whatever,
- 1:45:36Speaker 3: I'll you know, hunting to be like you'd set up
- 1:45:39Speaker 3: you know, they'd be like the field, you always see
- 1:45:40Speaker 3: the deer, and so you'd hunt a tree in the
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: corner because the deer always walk him around out in
- 1:45:46Speaker 3: that field and then you'd sit there and they'd not
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: come out under you. But you got to watch them
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: all night, you know. And if you like ran a
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: thing like a math problem and be like, Okay, I'm
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: here in my tree. This is a you know, a
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: thirty acre field, thirty acre l f alfa field. I'm
- 1:46:08Speaker 3: in my tree. I can shoot a little twenty yard
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: circle around me. And I'm only just planning on one
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: walking out in the field and meandering over my way.
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: And then you realize the deer in your area have
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: a thing where they like trot to the middle of
- 1:46:22Speaker 3: the alfalfa field because they're so tuned in the fact
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: that like the edge sucks, Like when you're on the edge,
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: some kid shoots an arrow at you. But if you
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: run out in the middle, nothing bad. Ever.
- 1:46:34Speaker 7: Generations of deer know that.
- 1:46:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: Yeah, Mom's like no, no, no, don't hang out in
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: especially that.
- 1:46:39Speaker 8: Black cherry, especially the trees, the big straight trees.
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: Yeah, the big cherry tree that the people are always in.
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: Just run out and feed all you want. They can't
- 1:46:46Speaker 3: reach you with their arrows.
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: My one tree stand white tail experience was in Minnesota,
- 1:46:54Speaker 5: and it was the scene deer that I hated because
- 1:46:58Speaker 5: I was like, I'm stuck in this stupid tree. Deer
- 1:47:03Speaker 5: out there.
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I always felt like you're doing something right if
- 1:47:05Speaker 3: you're looking at him. Yeah, Tony feels like you're doing
- 1:47:10Speaker 3: something right.
- 1:47:10Speaker 4: When he's twenty yards away, he'd be like, we were
- 1:47:13Speaker 4: watching deer all night, just didn't get a shot.
- 1:47:16Speaker 8: Okay, but you might as well have been another state.
- 1:47:18Speaker 3: You came close, huh felt close? Wasn't close.
- 1:47:21Speaker 8: They just didn't want to cooperate.
- 1:47:23Speaker 7: Yeah, Tony's good at thinking about it, but then he
- 1:47:25Speaker 7: also works really hard to like, you don't. You don't
- 1:47:28Speaker 7: get that success without both of those things, because it's
- 1:47:31Speaker 7: a lot of work just to go hang a tree
- 1:47:32Speaker 7: stand And then if you're you're hunting for every wind
- 1:47:35Speaker 7: with three guys, how many stands did you have hung?
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: Ten we had, he had a natural blind. He had
- 1:47:43Speaker 3: maybe four pop ups, five six trees.
- 1:47:48Speaker 7: That's a lot of work.
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: That's a ton of work, man. Yeah, listen, I was
- 1:47:52Speaker 3: at his. It was basically like it was basically we
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: were hanging out, you know, but it was basically the
- 1:47:59Speaker 3: treatment you would like. It's exceeded the treatment you would
- 1:48:03Speaker 3: get were you to hire an outfitter. Sure, well we
- 1:48:06Speaker 3: brought to the table, is my This is my neighbor's
- 1:48:09Speaker 3: family's my neighbor's family's farm. So he's like, they kind
- 1:48:14Speaker 3: of didn't need you. Oh I didn't bring anything to
- 1:48:17Speaker 3: the table. You weren't entertain me. No, they well, they
- 1:48:23Speaker 3: didn't need me for anything. I was just there hanging
- 1:48:25Speaker 3: out having a good time. It was impressive. He's cool.
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: He's cool. It's cool to watch him hunt those white tails.
- 1:48:30Speaker 7: Yeah, if you want to think, like Tony hosts the
- 1:48:31Speaker 7: Wired to Hunt Foundations podcast, and what I love about
- 1:48:34Speaker 7: that is they're like fifteen minute episodes, so you can
- 1:48:37Speaker 7: go and you can knock out a whole bunch of them.
- 1:48:39Speaker 7: And you know see how a really good white tail
- 1:48:42Speaker 7: public land bow hunter like him thinks.
- 1:48:44Speaker 3: What's funny too, is once he gets it, he ceases
- 1:48:47Speaker 3: to care about the deer. You know what I'm saying.
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: He just saw us off the skull plate. He's just
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: throw it into a pile. Yeah. But once he's got it,
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: it's like that he doesn't fetishize the antlers. I mean,
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: they're just like it has become like another one for
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: the pile. He likes the hunt. Dude, you know what
- 1:49:05Speaker 3: I mean. He likes the hunt.
- 1:49:07Speaker 8: Huh.
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: Yeah, He's not like, oh, these are going to go
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: on a special corner, you know, in the old mantel piece.
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: What are you gonna do with those? Put them in
- 1:49:16Speaker 3: my pile antlers?
- 1:49:18Speaker 4: What I like about Tony if we're all doing this,
- 1:49:20Speaker 4: He's just a very funny man, just a very sarcastic
- 1:49:23Speaker 4: funny man.
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: He's very interested in the outer space.
- 1:49:26Speaker 8: Oh yeah, we were talking about that when we went fishing.
- 1:49:28Speaker 3: Not in a weird way.
- 1:49:29Speaker 6: He wears that tinfoil hat from time to time.
- 1:49:31Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, you think so what I was
- 1:49:34Speaker 3: warned about him originally, Mark Kenyon warned me about him
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: in outer space. Yeah. I thought it was going to
- 1:49:41Speaker 3: be like like aliens, like a bunch of hoodoo jibber,
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: But it was he bombarded me with like legit outer
- 1:49:49Speaker 3: space stuff like how far away is this? How fast
- 1:49:52Speaker 3: is that? How dark that is? You know? We went
- 1:49:56Speaker 3: not like not like getting attacked by aliens.
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: At Yeah, we went fishing and I had just finished
- 1:50:02Speaker 4: reading the right stuff and for whatever reason, space came
- 1:50:08Speaker 4: up and he was like, yeah, I'm big on that.
- 1:50:10Speaker 5: Yeah, Space.
- 1:50:10Speaker 4: I was like, what do you mean it's a big
- 1:50:12Speaker 4: space guy, and it was like I was hitting. It
- 1:50:16Speaker 4: was like a infielding practice where I was hitting grounders
- 1:50:18Speaker 4: with what I knew and he was just grabbing it
- 1:50:20Speaker 4: and throwing me out.
- 1:50:22Speaker 3: At first, me and him shared my camper. He was
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: over around the one of my kids beds camper.
- 1:50:29Speaker 7: A good guest at BET.
- 1:50:30Speaker 3: He brought a couple two three space books with him.
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: He had his space books laid out, not deer books.
- 1:50:36Speaker 8: Fascinating, fascinating.
- 1:50:38Speaker 5: The first thing he did when he laid down was
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: put those stick on stars and plant little mobile.
- 1:50:46Speaker 3: I'm gonna get him a sign and says there's no
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: box in space. There you go. Might turn him off
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: on the whole subject. I don't know. He's gonna find space,
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: pinch points in space.
- 1:50:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it is the opposite of everything that you've just
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: described so far. What is just the interest in the infinite?
- 1:51:05Speaker 4: And as a deer hunter, he's, oh, it's.
- 1:51:07Speaker 3: A great point. Yeah. Maybe his setups all have a
- 1:51:10Speaker 3: great view of the sky and I've failed to know,
- 1:51:14Speaker 3: but none of them. Reviewing in my head, you can't
- 1:51:16Speaker 3: see the sky either, huh.
- 1:51:18Speaker 8: You just see a hole in front of Maybe the
- 1:51:20Speaker 8: good readings the reading light is good.
- 1:51:23Speaker 5: I was we're so pro white tail right now.
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: I was just thinking.
- 1:51:30Speaker 5: I was over at a friend's house, went downstairs to
- 1:51:34Speaker 5: used the by ath, never been there before, went downstairs,
- 1:51:36Speaker 5: used used the bathroom, and there's like many respectable white
- 1:51:42Speaker 5: tails on the wall. And I came back up and
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: I'm like, oh my god, there's a lot of a
- 1:51:47Speaker 5: lot of white tail down there. And he just goes, yeah,
- 1:51:52Speaker 5: says something about Montana. I can't kill a big mule
- 1:51:55Speaker 5: there anymore, so you just end up with a white tail.
- 1:51:58Speaker 3: Sure.
- 1:52:00Speaker 5: It was like, huh, A lot of people would be
- 1:52:02Speaker 5: real excited about it with those bucks on the wall.
- 1:52:06Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:52:07Speaker 7: And he's got a basement, Like I don't know people
- 1:52:09Speaker 7: in Montana.
- 1:52:10Speaker 5: With basements, so that's interesting.
- 1:52:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:52:12Speaker 7: Well, I grew up in a place where everyone had
- 1:52:14Speaker 7: a basement, and then I came out here. And when
- 1:52:17Speaker 7: we moved here, before we bought our house, we had
- 1:52:19Speaker 7: looked at like twenty of them when we came out,
- 1:52:21Speaker 7: not a single one had a basement in it. It's
- 1:52:24Speaker 7: because of well, Tornado. The ground is extra rocky in
- 1:52:31Speaker 7: the valley here, so that complicates it a little bit.
- 1:52:33Speaker 7: And then I think the earthquakes. Also, they don't want
- 1:52:36Speaker 7: to put a basement in.
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: We have a we have a full footprint crawl space
- 1:52:42Speaker 3: six feet no, five and a half feet deep, so
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: you can't stand up in it. And I realized after
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: a while, like, I guess if you went whatever you
- 1:52:50Speaker 3: do normally, yeah, nine feet, you'd be standing in two
- 1:52:55Speaker 3: feet of water. Yeah. Yeah, so it's like that deeper.
- 1:53:00Speaker 3: I'm like, what kind of lazy ass scraped off the
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: extra space so I can stand up now when I'm
- 1:53:06Speaker 3: sorting through my wife's Christmas decoration.
- 1:53:09Speaker 7: I should have consulted you.
- 1:53:10Speaker 3: Mm hmm, well I think I know why. All right,
- 1:53:13Speaker 3: Thanks guys, and somebody needs to add thanks Phil Spencer
- 1:53:17Speaker 3: got thanks Phil. He doesn't want to talk about it.
- 1:53:22Speaker 3: Where is that buck? I see it?
- 1:53:24Speaker 7: Uh, he's getting taxidermy.
- 1:53:26Speaker 3: You're getting them taxed her just a year amount. Why
- 1:53:29Speaker 3: did you say tax ermys?
- 1:53:31Speaker 7: Because I took it to a taxidermist to do that.
- 1:53:33Speaker 8: Really, what what'd you think?
- 1:53:37Speaker 7: You brought it to a tax nervous Well, our girl
- 1:53:39Speaker 7: Brooklyn who works here, who like gives us whole a
- 1:53:41Speaker 7: knight's discount? Yeah, of course I take it to her.
- 1:53:43Speaker 3: Oh that's who you had to do it. Yes, Oh
- 1:53:45Speaker 3: that's all I was gonna complain about that.
- 1:53:47Speaker 7: I didn't take it to Brooklyn. Oh yeah, she's quick
- 1:53:50Speaker 7: and cheap.
- 1:53:52Speaker 3: I've been sending her some business too. Shes a nice job.
- 1:53:55Speaker 8: Yeah, they're very clean, evenly colored.
- 1:54:00Speaker 5: I took a bunch of stuff that's just been sitting
- 1:54:03Speaker 5: around tour this year. But I did not take the
- 1:54:06Speaker 5: brown Bear tour.
- 1:54:08Speaker 3: You can get it beatled because I want to get
- 1:54:09Speaker 3: a beat That's what I did my boys, black Bear,
- 1:54:12Speaker 3: my boys first BlackBerry got a beatle for him. So
- 1:54:14Speaker 3: the So it's real nasal cavity is and real sound,
- 1:54:16Speaker 3: you know.
- 1:54:17Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, what'd you think of that? Camper loved it?
- 1:54:20Speaker 5: Oh good, I think it's enormous.
- 1:54:25Speaker 3: Oh we put stabilizer bars on it. With that big
- 1:54:27Speaker 3: diesel truck. You don't even know what's back there. Space
- 1:54:30Speaker 3: It's is nice. Me and Tony shared it. He felt
- 1:54:33Speaker 3: like he was an outer space. He had.
- 1:54:36Speaker 8: That's a space ship.
- 1:54:39Speaker 3: All right, Thanks Phil, his little his little line. Phil
- 1:54:43Speaker 3: just let us go.
- 1:54:45Speaker 5: I thought we were done.
- 1:54:46Speaker 3: I want you guys to hear Phil's British accident that
- 1:54:48Speaker 3: he forthfathing in it. No hit, how you like to
- 1:54:54Speaker 3: do it, phil, Isn't it okay?
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: Uh?
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: The last time I did that, I was admonished. And
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: then you came in here and said that our actors
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: aren't real artists. And now you're asking me to as
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: your court jester, to start spitting.
- 1:55:06Speaker 3: Off line the boys with a crash it line.
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: God bless us everyone.
- 1:55:13Speaker 7: That this comes out December fifteen. Can you do something
- 1:55:16Speaker 7: Christmas Eve?
- 1:55:16Speaker 3: Though? Is that? Is that not?
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: I mean, that's that's as Christmas as a gift.
- 1:55:20Speaker 7: And they're like a merry Christmas in there?
- 1:55:21Speaker 3: Someone oh do like where he's trying to tell Scrooge
- 1:55:24Speaker 3: he should go home early because it's Christmas Eve.
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: Well, well, Scrooge ass if i'd like the whole day,
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: And then I say, well, if quite convenient, sir, and
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: then he says it's not convenient, and it's not fair.
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: That's screw that's my Scrooge. And then I said, well,
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: it's it's Christmas Day, so it's only once a year.
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: And then he says, well, fine, you have to come
- 1:55:46Speaker 2: in two hours early tomorrow, and then I say, yes, sir,
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: marry oh, I mean good evening. That's how the scene is.
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: Thanks Menser, Pi.
- 1:55:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I take back.
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: That was art guy from Ireland right in and congratulate
- 1:56:04Speaker 5: me on the the b h A position, and he said,
- 1:56:08Speaker 5: are we still going? He said, I'm chuffed, I'm still
- 1:56:10Speaker 5: I'm still Spencer.
- 1:56:11Speaker 3: Spencer's done.
- 1:56:13Speaker 8: I didn't I didn't realize we're still going.
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: Earlier took his off and he's still talking.
- 1:56:16Speaker 5: I just thought that was funny. Yeah, chuffed, And I
- 1:56:19Speaker 5: was like, well, thank you all. Have to look up,
- 1:56:21Speaker 5: look up what that is.
- 1:56:22Speaker 3: Chuffed.
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: It just means like you're excited, you're hand chuffed.
- 1:56:25Speaker 3: I'm gonna start using that. That's like when I learned,
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: uhlans go bouch when a gun goes off instead of bang.
- 1:56:32Speaker 3: I'm gonna start doing chuff.
- 1:56:34Speaker 6: Close to chafed though its opposite of just.
- 1:56:36Speaker 5: Kind of fun to hear about Spencer's But I still
- 1:56:39Speaker 5: can't believe.
- 1:56:39Speaker 8: I can't understand if we're recording this podcast.
- 1:56:42Speaker 3: No, it's over. It's over, Spencer. I would like to
- 1:56:44Speaker 3: see your buck.

- 1:56:52Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: Thank you everybody, Thank you, Phil, great bother
