- 0:31a ministry of the Church for Life. I'm Pastor
- 0:34David. Today we remember a moment that changed
- 0:37the world forever. Just three days after Hiroshima,
- 0:40another city felt the fire of the Atomic Age.
- 0:44On August 9, 1945, the bomb called Fat Man fell
- 0:49upon Nagasaki, Japan. It was a valley city surrounded
- 0:54by hills, a place of beauty, industry, and faith.
- 0:58In seconds, that valley became a witness to unimaginable
- 1:03destruction. This story is not told to reopen
- 1:07wounds, but to remind us of the sacred value
- 1:10of every human life. It calls us to humility,
- 1:14to repentance, and to peace. So join me now as
- 1:19we walk through the history with reverence and
- 1:21listen for the voice of God that still speaks
- 1:24through the ashes of Nagasaki. This is Voices
- 1:28of Life, and this is your Did You Know? feature
- 1:31on Nagasaki, Japan. So did you know that just
- 1:35three days after Hiroshima, the world witnessed
- 1:38a second atomic explosion, this time over the
- 1:41city of Nagasaki? On August 9, 1945, at 11 .02
- 1:46a .m., a B -29 superfortress named Boxcar released
- 1:50a plutonium -based bomb called Fat Man over the
- 1:55valley of Nagasaki. Fat Man exploded approximately
- 1:591 ,650 feet above the city. The blast was more
- 2:04powerful than Hiroshima's, yet the surrounding
- 2:08hills partially contained the shockwave. Even
- 2:11so, one -third of the city was destroyed. Factories,
- 2:15shipyards, and homes vanished in seconds. Tens
- 2:19of thousands perished instantly. And by the end
- 2:22of 1945, nearly 70 ,000 lives had been lost.
- 2:26The bomb's design was different, a plutonium
- 2:30implosion mechanism, more complex and efficient
- 2:34than the uranium bomb used on Hiroshima. It marked
- 2:37a new level of destruction and capability, one
- 2:42that forever changed the course of human history.
- 2:46But did you know Nakasaki was not the original
- 2:49target? The mission first aimed for Kokura. Yet
- 2:55smoke and cloud cover obscured the city. After
- 2:59three failed passes, the crew diverted to Nagasaki,
- 3:02a decision made in minutes that would alter countless
- 3:07lives. The survivors of Nagasaki, known as Hibakusha,
- 3:13endured radiation sickness, burns, and long -term
- 3:16illnesses. Their suffering became a living testimony
- 3:19to the cost of nuclear war. In the days that
- 3:23followed, japan faced the reality of two atomic
- 3:26bombings and the soviet union's invasion of manchuria
- 3:29so on august 15 1945 emperor harahito announced
- 3:36japan's surrender bringing world war ii to an
- 3:40end today the nagasaki peace park and atomic
- 3:45bomb museum stand as a solid reminders not a
- 3:49victory but of the human price of power They
- 3:53call every generation to remember, to repent,
- 3:55and to pursue peace. So did you know that the
- 3:58valley city of Nagasaki became the final witness
- 4:03to nuclear warfare? A moment that ended a world
- 4:07war and began a moral reckoning that still continues
- 4:11today. Thank you for joining me on Voices of
- 4:15Life. The story of Nagasaki reminds us that power
- 4:19without compassion leads to ruin. It shows us
- 4:23that even in devastation, grace can rise again.
- 4:27From the ruins came the Peace Park, the Atomic
- 4:31Bomb Museum, and a generation determined to say,
- 4:33never again. As followers of Christ, we are called
- 4:38to be peacemakers, to speak truth, to love mercy,
- 4:42and to walk humbly before our God. May the memory
- 4:46of Nagasaki move us to pray for peace, to teach
- 4:50peace, and to live peace. I'm Pastor David, and
- 4:56I look forward to walking with you into our next
- 4:58episode of Voices of Life, where history meets
- 5:02faith, and faith calls to hope. Thank you for
- 5:05joining us today on the Voices of Life podcast,
- 5:08a ministry of the Church for Life. As we close,
- 5:12may the stories we share strengthen your faith,
