- 0:00Speaker 1: On December 15th, 1949, NBC presented the 29th broadcast of Dragnet,
- 0:06Speaker 1: sponsored by Fatima Cigarettes. In Garbage Shoot, Sergeant Joe Friday
- 0:12Speaker 1: and Sergeant Ben Romero investigate the killing of Laura Barkley,
- 0:17Speaker 1: an organist found dead in her Los Angeles apartment. The
- 0:21Speaker 1: apartment appears secure, and their inquiry turns to an unused
- 0:25Speaker 1: garbage shoot as they reconstruct a possible route to the victim.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Jack Webb stars as Friday with Barton Yarbrough as Romero
- 0:35Speaker 1: in an early day watch homicide case under Chief of
- 0:38Speaker 1: Detectives Thad Brown. Now back to the golden age of radio.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, the story you're about to hear is true.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Fatima Cigarettes, best of all long cigarettes, brings you Dragnet.
- 1:05Speaker 2: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to homicide detail. A
- 1:20Speaker 2: young woman has been murdered. The body was discovered behind
- 1:24Speaker 2: locked doors... The assassin is still at large.
- 1:28Speaker 5: Your job, find him.
- 1:34Speaker 6: If you want a long cigarette, smoke the best of
- 1:36Speaker 6: long cigarettes.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Smoke Fatima.
- 1:39Speaker 6: Fatima is the long cigarette which contains the finest Turkish
- 1:43Speaker 6: and domestic tobaccos, superbly blended to make Fatima extra mild.
- 1:48Speaker 3: And that's why Fatima has.
- 1:49Speaker 6: A much different, much better flavor and aroma than any
- 1:53Speaker 6: other long cigarette.
- 1:55Speaker 3: That's why Fatima is doubling and redoubling its smokers.
- 1:58Speaker 6: So, if you want a long cigarette, smoke the best
- 2:02Speaker 6: of all long cigarettes.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Smoke Fatima. Dragnet, the documented drama of an actual crime.
- 2:11Speaker 4: For the next 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los
- 2:13Speaker 4: Angeles Police Department, you will travel step by step on
- 2:17Speaker 4: the side of the law through an actual case from
- 2:19Speaker 4: official police files. From beginning to end, from crime to punishment,
- 2:24Speaker 4: Dragnet is the story of your police force in action.
- 2:30Speaker 7: It was Tuesday, January 9th. It was stormy in Los Angeles.
- 2:34Speaker 8: We were working a day watch out of homicide detail.
- 2:37Speaker 8: My partner's Ben Romero, and my name's Friday. I was
- 2:40Speaker 8: on the way to work, and it was 6.45 a.m.
- 2:42Speaker 8: when I got to the steps of the city hall,
- 2:44Speaker 8: the main street entrance.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Hey, Joe, wait up.
- 2:49Speaker 7: Morning, Ben.
- 2:50Speaker 3: When did they call you?
- 2:51Speaker 7: 5 a.m. Donahoe called you.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, miserable out here. It's pretty wet.
- 2:59Speaker 7: Feet are soaking wet.
- 3:01Speaker 3: See the trams, Burleigh? Yeah. New chief of detectives.
- 3:04Speaker 7: Wait a minute.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I want to get some gum. Pack a spearmint. Well,
- 3:13Speaker 3: I heard about the new chief.
- 3:15Speaker 7: Thad Brown.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Good man.
- 3:17Speaker 7: Here's gum.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Thanks. Thanks. I wish I'd make up the minds about
- 3:22Speaker 3: our shift. Work days, they call you back night. Work nights,
- 3:25Speaker 3: they call you back days.
- 3:26Speaker 7: Why don't you put in for a desk job?
- 3:27Speaker 3: We never have to call you back. You're here all
- 3:29Speaker 3: the time.
- 3:30Speaker 7: You're just hard to please.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Here we are.
- 3:48Speaker 2: It's a great way to start off as your new chief.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Call you back on a rotten morning like this. I'm
- 3:52Speaker 2: glad you got the job, Thad. Yeah, congratulations, Chief. It's
- 3:56Speaker 2: hard to follow a man like Ed Backstrand. Gonna need
- 3:58Speaker 2: your help.
- 3:59Speaker 3: You got it. Here's why I called you back.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Laura Barclay.
- 4:02Speaker 2: The dead body report nightclub entertainer.
- 4:05Speaker 5: Landlady found the body an hour ago.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Who's covering it?
- 4:07Speaker 5: Burton and Anderson.
- 4:08Speaker 3: They're out there now. Strangled, huh?
- 4:10Speaker 5: The lamp cord.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Still trying to figure out how the guy got in
- 4:13Speaker 2: the house.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Doors and windows all locked.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Attacked.
- 4:16Speaker 7: Is that the motive?
- 4:17Speaker 5: For now, yeah. I just came from there. I think
- 4:20Speaker 5: there's more.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Any reason?
- 4:22Speaker 5: Her room wasn't prowled. Yeah? Just a hunch. Play it
- 4:25Speaker 5: for me.
- 4:30Speaker 8: Ben and I left Thad Brown's office, picked up Lieutenant
- 4:32Speaker 8: Lee Jones at the crime lab, and drove to the
- 4:34Speaker 8: West Adams District, number 16 Imperial Place, where the body
- 4:37Speaker 8: of Laura Barkley had been found. It was an ornate
- 4:40Speaker 8: frame structure done in Victorian style, at least 30 to
- 4:43Speaker 8: 40 years old.
- 4:44Speaker 7: Number 16 was on the ground floor.
- 4:46Speaker 3: We went in.
- 4:47Speaker 8: A narrow hallway led to the bedroom in the rear
- 4:49Speaker 8: of the house. Two gas jet fixtures, which had been
- 4:52Speaker 8: converted to electricity, were the only illumination.
- 4:55Speaker 3: This place has seen better days.
- 4:58Speaker 7: Anybody else coming out, Lee?
- 4:59Speaker 2: I see flash bulbs down there.
- 5:00Speaker 5: They must be here already. Lieutenant, Bridie, down this way.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Hi, Burton.
- 5:06Speaker 7: Hi.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Photographer's covering the body position. Peterson's dusting for prints.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Fred, shoot a couple of overheads. Don't make them all
- 5:13Speaker 2: angle shots. Get up high, then move in close. Chief
- 5:16Speaker 2: was right. Room's in pretty good order. Did you talk
- 5:18Speaker 2: to anybody, Burton?
- 5:19Speaker 3: Landlady. Lives upstairs.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Only two people living in the building.
- 5:22Speaker 7: Did she tell you anything?
- 5:24Speaker 3: Said the Barclay girl paid her rent on time. Good tenant.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Plays the organ at the Blue Fox. Cocktail lounge. Any
- 5:30Speaker 3: idea how the murderer got in here?
- 5:32Speaker 7: Not yet.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Every door and window in the place is locked. Anything else?
- 5:36Speaker 3: That's it so far. We'll give you 15.7 on what
- 5:38Speaker 3: we've got. Okay, Lloyd.
- 5:40Speaker 7: You and Anderson have another detail?
- 5:41Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm working on that Westwood thing.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Two uniform men outside if you want anything.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Right, thanks.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Looks like a tough one, Joe. Whoever did it must
- 5:48Speaker 3: have come in through the keyhole. I'll see you later.
- 5:51Speaker 3: So long, Lloyd.
- 5:52Speaker 6: Andy.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Peterson is destined for Prince. Nothing yet.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Only piece of physical evidence so far.
- 5:59Speaker 3: The lamp cord she was strangled with. I'll run it
- 6:02Speaker 3: through downtown. Not a sign of a struggle. Maybe she
- 6:05Speaker 3: wanted to die. Check the bathroom, will you, Ben? I'll
- 6:07Speaker 3: look around the kitchen. Hey, Pete, have you dusted the
- 6:11Speaker 3: lamps yet? Not yet. Ben, come here.
- 6:21Speaker 7: A minute, will you?
- 6:23Speaker 5: Ben!
- 6:23Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 6:24Speaker 7: Come in the kitchen, will you? You got a pencil?
- 6:31Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Yeah, here you are.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Okay.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Take a look at this garbage chute here. Let me see.
- 6:40Speaker 3: About eight feet to the ground. Big enough for a
- 6:43Speaker 3: man to get through.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. Yeah, no problem.
- 6:48Speaker 7: Lee.
- 6:48Speaker 5: I'll be right there.
- 6:49Speaker 8: That could be the answer, Joe. Well, he either got
- 6:51Speaker 8: in this way or he was in the house when
- 6:52Speaker 8: she came home.
- 6:55Speaker 3: What do you got? Garbage chute here. What do you think?
- 6:58Speaker 3: Could be. Let me grab a kit. Let's see. Aluminum powder.
- 7:05Speaker 6: No.
- 7:05Speaker 5: No.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Nothing on the outside of the lid. Looked pretty clean.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Must have just been scrubbed. Abrasion's here.
- 7:32Speaker 5: Got a pencil?
- 7:33Speaker 3: Here, I'll get it. Hold it up there, will you? Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Yeah, there we go. Large prints. Unusually large.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Big hands. Can I look inside the chute a minute, Lee?
- 7:50Speaker 5: Go ahead. Watch that lid.
- 7:51Speaker 7: Yeah, I will.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Looks like it's blocked off upstairs. This thing hasn't been
- 7:59Speaker 3: used for garbage for some time. Most of them were
- 8:02Speaker 3: condemned a few years back. I'll get Fred to shoot these.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Let's go in the living room. That desk been dusted, Lee?
- 8:12Speaker 5: Yeah, it's clean. Go ahead. Take a look, Joe.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Yeah. Photographs. Hundreds of them. All men. Yeah, all different.
- 8:34Speaker 8: Lee Jones and the crime lab crew finished up and
- 8:37Speaker 8: went back to Central Division. Two uniformed officers remained on
- 8:40Speaker 8: duty at the scene of the crime. Thad Brown had
- 8:43Speaker 8: men sent out to canvass the neighborhood. Ben and I
- 8:45Speaker 8: went upstairs and talked with.
- 8:46Speaker 7: A landlady, a Mrs.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Emma Smith.
- 8:49Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 8:50Speaker 3: Police officers. You Miss Smith? Yes.
- 8:53Speaker 11: You're not the same officers I talked with before.
- 8:57Speaker 5: No, ma'am.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I wonder if we could ask you a few questions.
- 8:59Speaker 11: I told the other officers everything I knew.
- 9:02Speaker 3: We have to double-check, Miss Mann.
- 9:04Speaker 9: Who was the girl who lived in the apartment below,
- 9:06Speaker 9: number 16?
- 9:07Speaker 11: Laura Barclay.
- 9:09Speaker 8: Is that the name she used, the mail she received?
- 9:11Speaker 8: Was it addressed that way?
- 9:12Speaker 11: Yes, it was. She was a very good tenant, Laura.
- 9:17Speaker 11: No trouble with her at all.
- 9:19Speaker 3: When did she move here?
- 9:21Speaker 11: Oh, about four or five years ago. I have the
- 9:25Speaker 11: rent receipts. I always save receipts.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Did she always live by herself? Oh, yes.
- 9:31Speaker 11: That apartment rents to one person only.
- 9:34Speaker 7: Did she have many visitors, friends dropping in?
- 9:37Speaker 11: None that I ever saw. Pretty much to herself, Laura.
- 9:42Speaker 11: The men came yesterday and took the wagon.
- 9:45Speaker 3: What's that, ma'am?
- 9:46Speaker 11: The organ. Electric one. Laura rented it from a big
- 9:50Speaker 11: downtown firm. Used to practice all the time. My, it
- 9:55Speaker 11: was beautiful.
- 9:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:57Speaker 11: In the gloaming. She used to play that for me.
- 10:01Speaker 7: Mrs. Smith, when did the men come and take the
- 10:04Speaker 7: organ away?
- 10:05Speaker 11: Yesterday in the afternoon by 4.30.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Was Miss Barkley at home when they came?
- 10:11Speaker 11: No, she wasn't. She left me a note to let
- 10:14Speaker 11: them in, so I let them in. I never allow
- 10:18Speaker 11: anyone in the apartment without a note.
- 10:20Speaker 3: You know the name of the company where she rented
- 10:22Speaker 3: the organ?
- 10:24Speaker 11: Braziers, it was called, down on South Spring.
- 10:28Speaker 9: Well, didn't you think it was unusual that Miss Barkley
- 10:30Speaker 9: didn't have any friends?
- 10:32Speaker 11: Now, officer, I didn't say Laura didn't have any friends.
- 10:36Speaker 11: What I said was that she didn't have any friends
- 10:39Speaker 11: who came to see her here. She moved here from
- 10:43Speaker 11: a hotel for women. That's the reference she gave me.
- 10:48Speaker 7: I see.
- 10:48Speaker 3: I wonder if you could give us the address of
- 10:49Speaker 3: that hotel, please.
- 10:50Speaker 11: I'll write it down for you.
- 10:52Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 10:53Speaker 8: Miss Smith, did you hear any unusual sounds in Miss
- 10:56Speaker 8: Barclay's flat last night?
- 10:57Speaker 7: Anything out of the ordinary?
- 10:59Speaker 11: If I had, I would have called the police and
- 11:01Speaker 11: we'd have saved a girl's life.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Thank you very much, Miss Smith. Here's a coin.
- 11:06Speaker 9: If there's anything you think of after we've gone, don't
- 11:08Speaker 9: hesitate to call us.
- 11:09Speaker 11: Thank you, I will. I hope you get the dirty
- 11:13Speaker 11: men who killed Laura.
- 11:14Speaker 7: We didn't say it was men, Miss Smith.
- 11:17Speaker 11: Well, isn't it always a man?
- 11:22Speaker 8: Before we left Mrs. Emma Smith, we asked her about
- 11:24Speaker 8: the garbage chute. She said it had not been in
- 11:26Speaker 8: use for the last four years. We showed her the
- 11:28Speaker 8: stack of photos. She could identify none of them. We
- 11:31Speaker 8: drove back to Central Division. We checked Brazier's music store.
- 11:34Speaker 8: The two men who moved the organ were checked out
- 11:36Speaker 8: and cleared. We went to the Wynn Hotel for young ladies.
- 11:39Speaker 8: They could tell us nothing. Laura Barkley's references were all good.
- 11:42Speaker 7: We went back to the office and met with Chief
- 11:44Speaker 7: of Detectives Thad Brown.
- 11:45Speaker 5: You think he got into the garbage chute? That's the
- 11:47Speaker 5: way it looks, Gene.
- 11:48Speaker 8: It went all over the apartment. If there's another way,
- 11:50Speaker 8: we haven't found it.
- 11:51Speaker 5: All right, you know how he got in. Who is he?
- 11:54Speaker 8: We got out an APB on his M.O., latent fingerprints,
- 11:56Speaker 8: and making a run on those prints we found.
- 11:58Speaker 2: You got an idea about these pictures here? Most of
- 12:02Speaker 2: them theatrical stills, show people. Frank Latour and his canine circus.
- 12:09Speaker 2: To Laura, all my love, Frank. Tell you what you do.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Here's a guy I checked with this morning.
- 12:16Speaker 7: Bernard Karubian. Theatrical booking agent, huh?
- 12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, Barney's office is down in the Orpheum building, 8th
- 12:21Speaker 2: and Hill. He booked her into the Blue Fox. See
- 12:23Speaker 2: what he can tell you.
- 12:24Speaker 3: All right. I'll grab the picture. Oh, yeah.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Well, you got more than you started with.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Those fingerprints.
- 12:31Speaker 9: We get a make on them, we'll be close to
- 12:33Speaker 9: the guy. So was the Barclay girl. But he got away.
- 12:36Speaker 7: I wonder if we could see Mr.
- 12:43Speaker 5: Karubian.
- 12:44Speaker 11: Who's calling, please?
- 12:45Speaker 3: Sergeant Romero and Sergeant Friday, police officers.
- 12:48Speaker 11: One moment, please.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Peggy.
- 12:51Speaker 11: Two police officers to see you, Mr. Caribbean. Sergeant Friday
- 12:55Speaker 11: and Sergeant Romero, is that right?
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Send them in.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Go right in. Thank you.
- 13:10Speaker 12: When them rosy roses bust through the snow, I'll be.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Coming home on parole again.
- 13:17Speaker 12: When them General Sherman tanks are covered with ice, I'll
- 13:21Speaker 12: be home for good.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And won't that be nice?
- 13:25Speaker 9: Oh, no, no.
- 13:27Speaker 7: This guy's stuck his corndog.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Come on.
- 13:29Speaker 7: Sit down, fellas.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Thank you. Can I help you? I understand that you
- 13:33Speaker 3: booked Laura Barkley. Yeah, that's right.
- 13:34Speaker 7: I spoke with her.
- 13:36Speaker 12: Got his name right here.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Chief Saddown? That's right.
- 13:39Speaker 12: He asked me about Laura.
- 13:41Speaker 7: Too bad about that. Any clues?
- 13:43Speaker 3: We're working on it, Mr. Karubian.
- 13:45Speaker 12: What makes a person pull a stunt like that? Laura
- 13:47Speaker 12: didn't have no enemies.
- 13:48Speaker 3: She had one.
- 13:50Speaker 12: Well, I don't know much about her, except I've been
- 13:51Speaker 12: booking her for about four years.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Good organist. Pretty fair voice, too. Cut some pictures here.
- 13:56Speaker 3: I wonder if you'd take a look at them. Yeah, sure.
- 13:59Speaker 7: Quite a stack.
- 14:01Speaker 12: Yeah, old Frankie Latour and those dogs.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Great act. I'd book them.
- 14:05Speaker 12: Ricky Rogan, King of the Tap. Gus Soronoko and that
- 14:09Speaker 12: singing seal of his. Yeah, yeah, I know all these people.
- 14:12Speaker 12: I book them all.
- 14:13Speaker 9: Did Laura Barkley work with all these people?
- 14:15Speaker 12: One time or another, yeah. During the war, USO camp shows,
- 14:18Speaker 12: you know. Do you know whether she was close to
- 14:20Speaker 12: any of them? Well, come to think of it, she was.
- 14:24Speaker 12: That Frankie Latour, crazy about them dogs he is.
- 14:27Speaker 7: No, I mean the men themselves.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Anybody that she seemed particularly interested in?
- 14:29Speaker 12: Never heard her mention anybody.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Pretty girl. Did you know her very well, Mr. Groovy?
- 14:35Speaker 12: Only when she came in and out of town on
- 14:36Speaker 12: an engagement.
- 14:37Speaker 7: I'm a married man.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Well, and you don't think there's anything to these pictures
- 14:40Speaker 3: here of.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Hers, huh?
- 14:41Speaker 12: Well, I wouldn't say so. When you're on the road,
- 14:43Speaker 12: you always collect photos of the people you work with.
- 14:45Speaker 7: Souvenirs. Well, thank you very much, Mr.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Caribbean. Here's our card.
- 14:50Speaker 7: You betcha.
- 14:52Speaker 12: I sure hope you catch the guy. I wonder why
- 14:54Speaker 12: he picked on Laura.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Sometimes they don't have a reason.
- 15:00Speaker 8: When we left Bernard Karuvian's office, we checked by the
- 15:02Speaker 8: Blue Fox cocktail lounge.
- 15:04Speaker 3: It was still early.
- 15:05Speaker 7: The sign said open 5 p.m. It was 3.15.
- 15:10Speaker 8: We went to the morgue in the basement of the
- 15:11Speaker 8: Hall of Justice and looked at the coroner's report. The
- 15:13Speaker 8: autopsy report stated that the cause of death for Laura
- 15:16Speaker 8: Barclay was strangulation. We went to the second floor of
- 15:19Speaker 8: the Old City Jail building, the crime lab.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Nothing on the lamp cord. Standard URL 110 line.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Bought anywhere. No prints.
- 15:27Speaker 3: How about the chute, Link? Went back there and rechecked.
- 15:30Speaker 5: You were right.
- 15:30Speaker 3: The guy got in through the garbage chute. Found more
- 15:33Speaker 3: of the same prints along with some cloth impressions in
- 15:35Speaker 3: the dust. Tell you anything? The guy was wearing some
- 15:38Speaker 3: kind of tweed, Donegal, 15 to the inch. How about
- 15:41Speaker 3: the size of a man, Lee? How big could he
- 15:43Speaker 3: be to clear that chute? It had a 20-inch diameter.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Almost any man could squeeze through that. Checked the ground
- 15:48Speaker 3: level of the chute.
- 15:50Speaker 5: Cement.
- 15:50Speaker 3: No footprints. You don't have too much for us.
- 15:53Speaker 5: I got one thing for you.
- 15:54Speaker 3: What's that? I think I found your motive. And not
- 15:57Speaker 3: the one listed on the report.
- 15:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 16:00Speaker 5: Here are the.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Blow-ups of the body. It's 36 by 54 here.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Hold that in, will you, then?
- 16:07Speaker 7: No, I am.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Look through this magnifying glass here. The right hand.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:13Speaker 3: See where I'm pointing?
- 16:15Speaker 7: Ring finger, yeah. Looked like ring marks.
- 16:18Speaker 3: That's right. Pretty wide. Must have been good size rings. Well,
- 16:21Speaker 3: they might still be in that room. I called Thad Brown.
- 16:24Speaker 3: He had the room rechecked. No sign. Then you think
- 16:26Speaker 3: we got a burglary motive on our hands. That's my guess.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Stan had the boys check with the landlady. She didn't
- 16:31Speaker 3: know anything about any rings the Barclay girl might have had.
- 16:34Speaker 3: That doesn't help. I think I got something else here.
- 16:38Speaker 3: A library book, Harry. There are cards in one of
- 16:41Speaker 3: the pockets inside, checked out from the L.A. Public Library
- 16:44Speaker 3: main branch. I think these might be your lead on
- 16:47Speaker 3: the missing rings. A librarian sees a person's hands every
- 16:51Speaker 3: time they check out a book. That makes sense, Lee.
- 16:53Speaker 3: We'll play it that way. What department were the books
- 16:55Speaker 3: checked out of? The music room. Well, that's it. I
- 16:59Speaker 3: think you've got your motive now and a good set
- 17:01Speaker 3: of prints. You're close. Thanks a lot, Len. Well, let's
- 17:03Speaker 3: go to the library, Ben. I'll get it.
- 17:07Speaker 5: Crime lab.
- 17:09Speaker 3: No, this is Friday.
- 17:11Speaker 9: Oh.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Thanks, Frank. Well, we got some motive. How do you mean?
- 17:18Speaker 3: No make on those fingerprints.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 17:30Speaker 4: You are listening to Dragnet for the solution to an
- 17:33Speaker 4: actual case from official police files. Now here is a
- 17:37Speaker 4: real solution to many of your Christmas shopping problems.
- 17:40Speaker 6: If your friends smoke a long cigarette, give the best
- 17:43Speaker 6: of all long cigarettes, Fatima.
- 17:46Speaker 5: Give Fatima for quality.
- 17:48Speaker 6: The name Fatima has always stood for the best. Fatima
- 17:55Speaker 6: has a much different, much better flavor and aroma than
- 17:59Speaker 6: any other long cigarette.
- 18:00Speaker 5: Give Fatima their extra mild.
- 18:03Speaker 6: Yes, Fatima is the long cigarette which contains the finest
- 18:07Speaker 6: Turkish and domestic tobaccos, superbly blended to make Fatima extra mild.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Yes, extra mild.
- 18:15Speaker 4: So give Fatima for Christmas in the attractive golden yellow carton.
- 18:20Speaker 4: It's the long cigarette that has doubled and redoubled its smokers. Yes,
- 18:25Speaker 4: more and more smokers every day agree Fatima is the
- 18:29Speaker 4: best of all long cigarettes.
- 18:31Speaker 1: 4.30 p.m.
- 18:37Speaker 7: Tuesday, January 9th.
- 18:39Speaker 5: Heavy rain.
- 18:41Speaker 8: Laura Barkley's murderer was still a free man. Ben and
- 18:44Speaker 8: I were sure that whoever left their fingerprints on the
- 18:47Speaker 8: inside of that garbage chute was the same man who
- 18:49Speaker 8: murdered the Barkley girl. He had no previous record. His
- 18:52Speaker 8: first crime, as far as we knew, was a killing.
- 18:55Speaker 8: And the odds were all in his favor. The fingerprints
- 18:58Speaker 8: gave us nothing. All we had left to lead us
- 19:00Speaker 8: to the killer were three library books and a stack
- 19:02Speaker 8: of old theatrical photos. The solution of most crimes for
- 19:06Speaker 8: the working detective is method and persistence.
- 19:09Speaker 7: When you have clues, you work with them. When you don't,
- 19:12Speaker 7: you work your.
- 19:13Speaker 8: Way to a logical conclusion as best you can. We
- 19:16Speaker 8: went to the Los Angeles Public Library, the main branch.
- 19:19Speaker 8: The librarians in the music room handled thousands of readers
- 19:22Speaker 8: every week.
- 19:23Speaker 3: None of them remembered Laura Barclay. We drove over to
- 19:26Speaker 3: the Blue Fox Cocktail Lounge.
- 19:28Speaker 7: We interviewed the manager, and he knew nothing.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Of her personal life.
- 19:31Speaker 8: We talked to Harry Schumann, the organist who had taken
- 19:33Speaker 8: Laura Barclay's place.
- 19:35Speaker 10: What would you like to hear, fellas?
- 19:38Speaker 3: Police officers. I'd like to talk to you, man. About Laura, huh? Yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 3: that's right. All right, if I keep on playing.
- 19:46Speaker 10: Manager wants full 15-minute sets.
- 19:48Speaker 5: Go ahead.
- 19:49Speaker 3: That's all right. What can I tell you?
- 19:52Speaker 7: How long have you known Miss Barkley?
- 19:54Speaker 10: Oh, four or five years Terrible thing You gotta get
- 19:59Speaker 10: whoever did it Yeah, we're gonna try Can you think
- 20:02Speaker 10: of anybody that might have killed her? I know you
- 20:04Speaker 10: ask that question of everybody I don't know Does anybody
- 20:08Speaker 10: ever know for sure?
- 20:10Speaker 5: Sometimes.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Well, I don't know.
- 20:13Speaker 10: When you think of a person, you never think who
- 20:15Speaker 10: might murder them.
- 20:16Speaker 8: Maybe you might know a few things about her that
- 20:18Speaker 8: you could fill us in on.
- 20:19Speaker 3: I'll try.
- 20:20Speaker 7: She go in for jewelry much? Rings, things like that?
- 20:24Speaker 3: Funny you should ask that. She was nuts for it.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Good things.
- 20:28Speaker 7: Rings?
- 20:29Speaker 3: Had a couple of beauties.
- 20:30Speaker 10: Diamonds there were, big stones. Cost 4,000. I know she
- 20:35Speaker 10: used to put most of her money into those rings.
- 20:37Speaker 3: She buy them on time?
- 20:39Speaker 5: Yeah. I remember one.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Night she was overjoyed.
- 20:42Speaker 10: The night she paid him off.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Cost a lot of dough.
- 20:46Speaker 7: Can you describe those rings for us?
- 20:47Speaker 3: Not too good. I can give you the name of
- 20:51Speaker 3: the jeweler she bought them from. That'll do.
- 20:53Speaker 7: Do you know anybody else that we might talk to?
- 20:55Speaker 10: Don't know any of her friends. She was an only child.
- 20:58Speaker 10: No living relatives that I know of. How about her landlady?
- 21:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess that's it, Harry. Thank you.
- 21:04Speaker 5: For what?
- 21:04Speaker 3: I wish I could help more. If everybody had your attitude,
- 21:07Speaker 3: we'd be out of a job.
- 21:08Speaker 8: Before we left the Blue Fox, Harry Schumann gave us
- 21:14Speaker 8: the address of Laura Barkley's jeweler. The next morning, we
- 21:17Speaker 8: checked with the manager of the store, and he gave
- 21:18Speaker 8: us a complete description of the two diamond rings which
- 21:21Speaker 8: the dead girl had purchased. They were valued at $ 4, 000.
- 21:25Speaker 7: He gave us detailed drawings of the rings.
- 21:27Speaker 8: We went back to the office, gave the information to
- 21:29Speaker 8: burglary detail. An all-points bulletin was put out describing them.
- 21:33Speaker 8: Pawn shops throughout the city and state were alerted to
- 21:35Speaker 8: watch for the stolen rings.
- 21:36Speaker 7: We had lunch with Chief Thad Brown at Costas Cafe.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Never mind, O'Mara. I'll get it.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Thank you, Chief. I'll get the tip.
- 21:45Speaker 7: The stew was good.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Could I have some change with the cigarette machine?
- 21:54Speaker 5: Thanks. Need any cigarettes, Joe?
- 21:57Speaker 7: No, no thanks, thanks.
- 22:07Speaker 5: Let's go.
- 22:09Speaker 7: What do you think, San?
- 22:10Speaker 2: The description of the rings and the MO should help.
- 22:13Speaker 2: We haven't turned up. Good chance he's holding on to them.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Could be his first job. Probably scared.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Anybody check back over the neighborhood there?
- 22:20Speaker 5: This is the afternoon and this morning.
- 22:22Speaker 2: A lot of door-to-door salesmen through that district.
- 22:24Speaker 5: All been checked out.
- 22:25Speaker 7: It's a dead end.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Now where?
- 22:27Speaker 3: Only those prints are checked out.
- 22:29Speaker 5: Well, they didn't. Got a kickback from Brereton in Sacramento
- 22:33Speaker 5: on his M.O. No make. We'll have to get him
- 22:35Speaker 5: with what we've got.
- 22:36Speaker 7: Here's the car.
- 22:40Speaker 5: Sure you picked up all the loose ends?
- 22:42Speaker 7: We've been back over the course three times.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Go over it again. Keep going over it until something breaks.
- 22:51Speaker 8: For the next ten days, we retraced our steps from
- 22:53Speaker 8: the room where the crime was committed throughout the neighborhood
- 22:56Speaker 8: to the place where she worked, back to the same
- 22:58Speaker 8: dead end.
- 22:59Speaker 7: Ben and I checked and double-checked.
- 23:00Speaker 8: Each other to make certain that neither of us had
- 23:02Speaker 8: overlooked even the smallest detail of the investigation.
- 23:05Speaker 7: We got no place. It was 8 a.m. January 19th.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Homicide, Friday. This is Robles in burglary, Joe. Yeah, Dick.
- 23:14Speaker 5: Got something for you.
- 23:15Speaker 7: Job pull last night. Couple of watches, strand of pearls.
- 23:18Speaker 3: How do we figure in it? His M.O. Yeah?
- 23:21Speaker 7: Guy got in through the garbage chute.
- 23:27Speaker 8: Besides fingerprints and photographs, one other mark by which the
- 23:30Speaker 8: unknown criminal is identified is by his method of operation,
- 23:33Speaker 8: his M.O. Once a thief finds a successful means of operation,
- 23:37Speaker 8: he seldom changes it. In our search for Laura Barkley's murderer,
- 23:41Speaker 8: we had checked our files and found no criminals at
- 23:43Speaker 8: large whose practice it was to gain entrance through a
- 23:46Speaker 8: garbage chute. It was reasonably safe to assume that this
- 23:49Speaker 8: was the same man. It was 2 p.m.
- 23:51Speaker 7: January 23rd.
- 23:52Speaker 3: I was on my way back from the record bureau.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Just had a call, Joe.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Elmer Radcliffe.
- 23:57Speaker 5: Informant?
- 23:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 23:59Speaker 9: Says two days ago he heard about some guy who
- 24:01Speaker 9: was making the rounds trying to peddle a couple of
- 24:03Speaker 9: diamond rings.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Same ones? He's not sure. Doesn't know what the guy
- 24:06Speaker 3: looked like. Any idea where the guy is now? Hasn't
- 24:09Speaker 3: been around since. Told Elmer to keep his eyes open.
- 24:12Speaker 3: That's good.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Come in here, you two.
- 24:17Speaker 3: What do you got, Thad?
- 24:18Speaker 5: This report just came down from burglary.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Pawn shop down in North Main took in a watch
- 24:22Speaker 2: and a strand of pearls last night.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 24:24Speaker 5: Same stuff that Rubles called you about.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember. Where's it dying?
- 24:27Speaker 2: Same guy tried to peddle a couple of diamond rings.
- 24:29Speaker 7: 10 a.m., January 25th.
- 24:34Speaker 8: Thad Brown arranged to have all pawn shop detail calls
- 24:38Speaker 8: concerning the suspect put through to us on.
- 24:39Speaker 7: Extension 2521, homicide. Five days passed. No further words.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Homicide Friday.
- 24:48Speaker 7: This is George Rose. I run the Harbor Pawn Shop,
- 24:51Speaker 7: second in Maine.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Yeah, what's the matter?
- 24:53Speaker 10: A man in here trying to turn those diamond rings,
- 24:55Speaker 10: the ones on the stolen property list.
- 24:58Speaker 7: We can't talk now. Stall him or we'll be right down.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Come on, Ben.
- 25:07Speaker 5: Move it.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:08Speaker 7: The next corner.
- 25:14Speaker 3: There it is.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Just up the block.
- 25:15Speaker 7: Pull up. All right, let's go. Yeah. Here we.
- 25:23Speaker 5: Are.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Hey, fella.
- 25:25Speaker 7: Look out, Joe.
- 25:26Speaker 3: He's got a gun.
- 25:26Speaker 5: You all right, Joe?
- 25:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:29Speaker 12: Out the back way.
- 25:30Speaker 7: Let's get him.
- 25:33Speaker 3: There he goes, up alley.
- 25:34Speaker 7: Can you hit him? You didn't stop him.
- 25:37Speaker 5: Watch it.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Come on, Joe.
- 25:41Speaker 7: He's turning on the spring.
- 25:43Speaker 5: He ran into that cafeteria up the street.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Come on, let's run.
- 25:48Speaker 7: Where'd he go?
- 25:49Speaker 5: You see him?
- 25:49Speaker 7: Yeah, there he goes.
- 25:50Speaker 2: He's headed for the kitchen.
- 25:51Speaker 7: Come on.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Stop that man.
- 25:54Speaker 5: Stop him.
- 25:56Speaker 7: Out the back door, into the alley.
- 25:57Speaker 3: There he goes.
- 25:58Speaker 2: That's Ben. All right, Joe, stop.
- 26:01Speaker 3: He's not stopping. Stay clear.
- 26:05Speaker 5: He's down.
- 26:08Speaker 7: All right, come on. All right, get his guns.
- 26:17Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 26:18Speaker 3: You got him in the leg, Joe. Hit his head
- 26:21Speaker 3: when he fell.
- 26:22Speaker 7: All right, snap him on.
- 26:26Speaker 9: Look on the little finger of his right hand. Two
- 26:29Speaker 9: diamond rings.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Doesn't make sense, does it? What's that?
- 26:34Speaker 7: $ 4, 000 worth of diamonds and he's laying on a pile
- 26:36Speaker 7: of garbage.
- 26:38Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. Only the
- 26:48Speaker 2: names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:52Speaker 4: On April 2nd, 1947, trial was held in Superior Court,
- 26:55Speaker 4: Department 81, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:59Speaker 5: In a moment, the results of that trial.
- 27:01Speaker 6: Now, here are authentic reports from all over the country
- 27:04Speaker 6: that tell the story of Fatima's sensational increase in popularity.
- 27:09Speaker 5: New Orleans division.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Fatima sales up 300%.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Detroit division.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Fatima sales up 348%.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Los Angeles division.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Fatima sales up 545%.
- 27:22Speaker 6: More and more smokers agree Fatima is the best of
- 27:26Speaker 6: long cigarettes. So enjoy Fatima yourself and give extra mild
- 27:31Speaker 6: Fatimas for Christmas in.

- 27:34Speaker 6: Everyone who smokes Fatima says that this great new long
- 27:38Speaker 6: cigarette is the best of all long cigarettes.

- 27:55Speaker 5: He was tried and convicted of murder in the first degree.
- 27:58Speaker 4: His case was fought through the Supreme Court of California
- 28:01Speaker 4: and in the United States Supreme Court. In both instances,
- 28:04Speaker 4: his conviction was upheld. Last Friday morning, after a delay
- 28:08Speaker 4: of five years, Martin Eric Swanson was executed in the
- 28:12Speaker 4: lethal gas chamber at the state penitentiary. You have just
- 28:19Speaker 4: heard Dragnet, a new series of authentic cases from official files.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Technical advice for Dragnet comes from the office of Acting
- 28:27Speaker 4: Chief of Police, W.A. Wharton, Los Angeles Police Department.

- 28:45Speaker 2: Allen, honored as Policeman of the Year, who dedicates his
- 28:48Speaker 2: life so that yours might be more secure.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Fatima Cigarettes. Best of all.

- 29:18Speaker 6: true Wellman method.
