- Aris: The problem is you need to let Aaron Boone manage. Aaron Boone has not written a lineup since he's been there. Julio A.: Hello and welcome to another edition of the No Good Sports Podcast. We are your hosts, Junior and Senior. Although it's really second and third. You know, you're the middle. I'm the third. Julio Elder: we're not gonna get into that one today. All right. Julio A.: But you know, we'll we'll go with junior and senior. Lots to talk about. Haven't seen you in a week. Hope all is well. you know where where things are well and and groovy and dandy right now? Tampa, Florida. Julio Elder: In Tampa. Julio A.: Tampa, Florida. What a game. We have a lot to talk about. We're gonna get to the game. We're gonna get to the world series. We're gonna get to the NFL. We're gonna get to my Knicks. Finally won. We are off to Schneid. But before we get to any of that, Carl Julio Elder: Thanks for Carl Thompson. Julio A.: Anthony cat bodega cat. We'll get to that. But first we got it, we got a guest coming up to talk World Series with us. Someone who was in the building last night, who's in the building often published. Julio Elder: Who's in Tampa all the time? Julio A.: Who's in Tampa all the time, Yankee territory, but they're raised territory right now. We'll get to that as well. why don't you introduce us to to our guests and then and then we'll we'll see we'll get them on. Julio Elder: Well, we have Aris. Aris is Saccharolidis. I think is his last name. It's hard to pronounce. That's why Aris says, you don't have to pronounce my last name. Just call me Aris. So everybody knows Aris. And bottom line, Aris is a good friend. He's a collaborator with Latino Sports. He's done ev it it Julio A.: Friend of the family, friend of the show. Julio Elder: been with us for many times. Met him in a in a in a MLB freaking banquet like what twenty years ago maybe or more. We Julio A.: About that. About that. Julio Elder: Who were the only ones in the back that we were complaining about the food and he brought his own food and we started sharing it. So that's the type of person Harris is. So Harris is a retired. He's a retired correction Julio A.: Now w we're we're gonna let Aris tell us yeah, go g get to that part. Go ahead, go ahead. Julio Elder: officer in New York City Rikers. retired, but he's like still playing hardball. He loves baseball. he's an author. He's wrote he's written a book about with about Hank Steinbrenner, who he spent a lot of time with and became personal friends. incredible stories if you haven't read that book. he's writing another one about his experience at Rikers. and he's a a a frequent columnist for Meet the Mats. And once in a while we take one of his articles and we link it to Latino Sports. That's my boy Aris. Julio A.: So what I love, Aris, I love that he's got not one but two careers with which he's got a lifeline, a library, if you will, of stories, not just in the sports world, which is when I met him after he had already retired from his previous life, but from the New York City correctional system with which Aris grew up with. So he's he's a noted author, and we're excited to have him on. like I said before, he was in the building yesterday. So I want to start with that and let's get Ares on the show. Aris, how you doing? Welcome, welcome Aris: Let's do it. There we go. Julio A.: to the No Good Sports Podcast. Aris: Hey, first of all, I wanna congratulate. First of all, I wanna congratulate you two guys because I'm sure this is the first father son podcast. Would you agree? Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Julio A.: I I think you're right. I I think you're right. I thank you. Thank you for that. You're absolutely right. Especially in sports. Yes. Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: no, no one's done it. and so thank you. Thank you for noticing. thank you for coming onto the show. We love having you. We're glad we finally got to get it done. We had a little technical difficulties earlier, but we're here. I I want to get to it right away. First, but we'll get to your past, we'll get to the fun stuff, but right now, you were in the building last night. Twelve innings. Am I correct? Aris: I've been in the building through the whole playoff run. I am broke. I am broke. Do you hear me? Julio A.: Woo ta Julio Elder: Ha ha ha Julio A.: I believe that. I believe that. Tell me, tell me you go be in the Aris: I will be in the building tonight and I'm waiting for tickets to go down. They're already right now the cheapest seat is four fifty. Julio A.: Wow. Although Aris: Yeah, the cheapest. Julio A.: that is still cheaper than, you know, on television, I saw a lot of Milwaukee fans. And they even mentioned Aris: Yes, yes. Julio A.: that Milwaukee, it's cheaper for you to fly down, make a weekend out of it, get a game down here, than it is to get a ticket in Milwaukee. Talk about the fandom last night. Aris: Let me tell you, inside that stadium was complete chaos with Milwaukee Brewer fans. I would say 80 20 Milwaukee Brewer fans in there. The Tampa Yes. Julio A.: What? Julio Elder: No way. Are you serious? Aris: Yes. Absolutely. I'm down here. Ever nobody believes me. When you walk this now, when you leave Julio A.: What? Aris: it here, here's the part. When you leave the stadium and go on the strip, there's no Tampa Bay jerseys, no Tampa Bay caps. All Milwaukee Brewers nation. You would think you're in Milwaukee. I went to the gym this morning. Nobody's talking about their rays. Nobody's wearing rays gear. There's no buzz down here for the Tampa Bay Rays. They do not support their team like that. During the regular season, Julio A.: man. Now I Aris: during the regular season, they draw about 3,000 fans. Don't but let that little figure in the box go fool you where they had 14,000 last night. I'm there. I know it's there. Julio Elder: Wow, that's a that's a that's a Julio A.: That that's a real shame. Julio Elder: that's super shame. Why do you think though? Why why do you think that, Aris? you're there all the time. what? People in Tampa don't like their hometown baseball game? They don't like baseball? What's the what's the story? Aris: I'm gonna tell you what it is, man. Baseball, I don't care what this commissioner says. He's in La La Land. Baseball's a dying breed. You don't see no youth going to games, as teenagers or group like we used to when we were young. You don't see that anymore. They don't know how to promote their players. They're analytics thing. You need a college degree to follow this sport with all these new stats: war, whip, exit velocity. They do exit velocity on foul balls. You know, they post them on the scoreboard. And a lot of people in Tampa. are from other areas. They came down here, the the they moved down here from Chicago. So they're not really raised fans. They're not really raised fans. They're transplanted from other Julio A.: Right. But Julio Elder: happens in Miami too, yeah. Aris: areas. Julio A.: So, so I I got a question about that. So you know, San Diego, I live in LA. I've been here for over a decade. And I go to a lot of San Diego Padre games. It's a great venue, it's a great city. It's a it's it's the most fanciest, expensive border city I've ever been to in my life. Aris: Mm-hmm. Julio A.: but San Diego's is it sounds like it's a lot like Tampa. It's a very transient city. Everybody in San Diego that I've met is from somewhere else. So it's hard to be a Padre fan when you join the military and you get stationed to Coronado, but you got St. Louis ties, you got Boston ties, you got Aris: Right. Julio A.: all these other ties. So do you Julio Elder: New York Tis. Julio A.: so for a long time it was hard to build a fandom. That that change happened though. And I don't know if it happened in '98 with Tony Gwynne, because I wasn't here for that. But you go to the stadium now, and the Padres have a loyal local. Fan base. I thought at some point, maybe 20 years after, you know, they bring them on as the expansion team into an area that historically has a lot of former New Yorkers and it's all retirees, right? And there's a spring training facility for New York in Tampa. The Yankees play in Tampa for spring training. So you would think that's not the greatest place. However, you wouldn't factor in 20 years later, if the product is good, you're gonna develop. Local fans that are eventually gonna be the nucleus of what is gonna be a very good fan base. And I'll tell you for the Rays part, in the last 20-25 years since expansion, I don't even know how long they've been around, but since they started, it seems like they're a winning franchise. They don't spend a lot, but they've been to the World Series a couple times already. and and they know how to develop players, they're not the A's. They're not always the the the cra So what is it? Why why how come they don't have that generational difference where it's like, okay, well now they've been here twenty five years, they're going to the World Series, we gotta root. Aris: When I drive through these highways, I don't see no billboards promoting them. The last time I saw them promote a player on Billboards was Juan DeFranco. Today, they don't promote anybody. It's gotten to a point where the owner, the old the old Julio A.: We don't talk about wonder. Aris: owner, Stu Stu Sternberg, he was asking me for advice. How do I get fans in here? And I told him, Open your gates and let them in free. They'll spend money. Have Randy Arizoma go to Lakewood High School. Which ain't too far from there and give out free tickets to the kids. Come watch me play. Have Jose Siri, the center fielder at the time. So what did he do? A week later he trained at Randy Arizona to Seattle. After I told them you need Yeah. Yeah. I told him you guys put Julio A.: Randy Arosa Reina, yeah, Randy. Yeah. Yeah yeah. Aris: tell them put it put cowboy the book cowboy boots on him. Let him walk through the south side of St. Pete and have him distribute tickets. They don't care. Julio A.: I gotta tell Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: you, I'm watching these games, they got a good product. It's a good product on the field. They're pesky, they play small ball, you Aris: Yes. Good problem. Yes. Yes. Julio A.: know what I mean? They got Cabanero who Julio Elder: That's right. Julio A.: can hit bombs, but they get on the base pass and it's exciting. They're running, they're causing errors, and they do the sacrifice bunt, double steal. So Julio Elder: Double steals, Julio A.: their brand of baseball, I Aris: Right. Julio A.: think it is a good brand. It's not sitting around waiting for the 3-1 shot, but like if if no one w knows who these guys are. And I I can tell you, as a baseball fan, even I don't know who some of these guys are. Chandler Simpson is now gonna be a national name. But like before the World Aris: Yes. Julio A.: Series, I know who Chandler Simpson was. Aris: Right, right, right. Chandler Simpson, they they did a bobblehead early in the year. Julio Elder: Ha ha ha. Aris: They did a bobblehead for Chandler Simpson and they had his legs wobbling. Julio A.: All right, he got a bobble. Aris: Not his not his head, his legs were wobbling. And like Julio Elder: Ha Aris: you you know what it is. See the passion. I I've been watching Julio A.: That's pretty creative. Aris: the passion as you guys talk about this. There's no passion for the team down here. Let me give you example. They just opened up the Julio A.: All right. Aris: upper deck. The upper deck been closed, it's never been open because they don't draw enough. They opened up for the postseason. And all these fake fans come here, right? To the games. Now, when I was at the Yankee series, Rasmussen was no hitting the Yankees. Six inning, Julio A.: Yep. Aris: people were leaving. They were leaving. And I said, You're leaving? yeah, we want to beat the traffic. The guy's pitching the no-hitter and they're leaving on one-nothing game. This is what the type of fan base you're getting in these playoff games. People that want to be seen. Julio A.: Right, right. Aris: They're taking selfies of themselves, posting on Instagram. Look, I'm at the game. What in there is it? Six? We're out of here. That's what's going on here. That's what's going on. Julio A.: w and so. Julio Elder: So it's no it's it's it has to do with the love for baseball in general, not so much for the team. Hmm, okay. Julio A.: Well it it also Aris: Yes. No, not Julio A.: let's let's be real Aris: for T. Julio A.: in in terms of proximity in terms of proximity to like downtown Tampa, I don't know what that i even means, but like is it accessible? Is you know, Wrigleyville's accessible, Fenway's in the middle of downtown. The you know the Yankees have three different trains that all converge like Aris: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Julio A.: r at one stop. Even the Mets that are all the way out at the you know, they they had it's accessible. T i by car, by train, by bus, and if you're local, you walk. Is it an accessible stadium? Aris: Only by car. You gotta go over the Howard Franklin Bridge, it's twelve miles long. It's about a twenty minute ride from Tampa Airport, Tampa Airport. But at public transportation, zero. Zero. Zero. And if you're gonna rely on on the St. Pete's Julio A.: Well that's that's also part of Julio Elder: Mm. That that that Aris: residents to go to the games, forget it. There's too much poverty down here. Unemployment. People are broke down here in on the south side. Yeah. Julio A.: Sure, sure, sure. It's like being in the Bronx in the seventies trying to catch a game. You wanted to get in a Aris: Yeah. But but keep in mind. Julio A.: car, get in and get out. Aris: Keep in mind when they were at Stambina Field last year because the roof was down, they were had to do repairs here. That field only holds 10,000 fans. They didn't sell out. They tell you they did. No, they I was getting in there for six bucks. They were to not sell out games there. So what makes them think they're gonna sell out a new stadium because they're moving to Tampa? There's just no interest. Miami's going through the same thing. There's no interest in baseball. down here because you got too much bush gardens. too much to do here. Too much to do. Disney World, Disney World. Julio A.: Well, maybe you can make a case for that in Tampa. I don't think you can make a case for that in Miami. Miami's a little different. I feel like w every time there's a WBC in Miami, it proves that there's a thirst for baseball in Miami. Those games sell out Aris: For Latinos. For the Latino fan. Yes. The passion is there. Julio A.: No, Japan, Japan, Japan sells out. Japan sold out in Miami. People wanted to see Shohei. there's Aris: And what were the fans? Well what Julio A.: it's it's a product. It's a product, is my point. if you put out a good product, listen, I don't know anybody in anywhere. If you're a baseball fan, you could have played that game in Minnesota. If you've got a stacked team like the Dominicans have, or if you've got a stacked team like the Japanese or the or or the Americans do, people are gonna come out. And so I I also think part of the problem is that the Rays have been crying poverty for 25 years while they still went. They found the formula to do it. Kudos to them. But until they bring in, and really, and when I say kudos to them, it. I've never seen, I've never seen a player get traded to another team, get eliminated by. In the playoffs by the Brewers and then go back to their former team to watch a game because they're rooting for the Rays. Tyler Glass now did that. Orandio Aris: Yes, a lot of that happened. Yes, a lot of that. Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: Arozarena hasn't been a Ray for years. And he went back. Julio Elder: And he went back. Julio A.: And and so, Aris: Yes. Julio A.: kudos to them. They obviously run an organization, but what it also means is maybe you don't let a guy like Blake Snell go. Maybe you don't let Glass now go. Maybe you put Some more money in, and you develop someone and say you're gonna be a ray for life. We can build around you, and that builds fandom. Julio Elder: and Julio A.: what the problem is. Julio Elder: and I think also Ares, you hit it on the nose 'cause you know, I'm I'm a I'm a I'm a down to earth, you know, street guy, you know, in the South Bronx. And the bottom line is, you know, if you give tickets for free, if you go to the some of the schools, if you go to some of the high schools, if you get some of the players to go out there and try to bring some people in, 'cause you say transportation is bad there, but if they can work out some deals to get the city to put in to at least have a bus like For example, in San Diego, they have a bus that just goes from they bring up they bring an actual bus from Mexico. From Mexico. You Aris: Wow. Julio Elder: can get a bus in Mexico as Mexican fans and they can come over the border to watch a game in San Diego. And then that same bus or buses will take them back. if this if if if if St. Petersburg, if the Tampa Bay's team works something out with the city with whatever, there doesn't seem to be any coordination there. And leading this team by itself, you're you're right. If if nobody promotes them, how the hell are you gonna bring people in? And you're not Aris: Right. Julio Elder: you can't get 10,000 people. And by the way, you're also right about Miami. I've been to Miami other games because we've got we've gone to Miami to give awards. What freaked me out is when the Yankees go to Miami to play the Miami Marlins, bro. They have more Yankee fans than Marlins fans. That's that that's incredible. Aris: Yeah. Right. Right. Julio A.: historically speaking, that's another team. at one point their outfield was Christian Yelich, Giancarlo Stanton, and who was the third? They got rid of all three of them. Ozuna. it was Marcelo Ozuna. Marcelo Zuna. That was their outfield. And they got rid of all three. And so if you Aris: Ozuno, ozuno, ozuno, yeah, yeah, yes, yes. Julio Elder: Osuna Julio A.: don't build around, you know what I mean? And maybe Aris: Yes. Julio A.: they they have a different case because I remember Jose Fernandez was their cornerstone. They were gonna lock him up, and unfortunately, he had a tragic accident. He was he was a picture they were gonna, he was their Kershaw, right? He was their ace. But you you gotta spend. They don't spend they historically, and so I, you know, there's part of that we can talk about that. We want to get you back on for the labor talks. I I have a rule on this podcast, we're not talking 2027 until 2026 is over. So we have to wait another day. In the meantime, in the meantime. Tell me about so so you're in the building last night. The Rays are basically playing, it sounds like in away game at home. Aris: Yes. Julio A.: you talk to some of these guys. What's that? What what what kind of added pressure? I mean, feel like Kevin Cash runs a really cool shit, but you've been following them all year. Like, do you see them? So, right before you joined, I I had a theory that I want to discuss. maybe you can shed some light on this could either be the turning point in the series and and I and I'll tell you why I say that. This could be the turning point in the series, a la O3 Red Sox, right? Or it could it's it was a blip on the radar. It's a gentleman's sweep. However, my my theory is it it's gonna they're gonna win tonight and they've got momentum because yesterday Murphy didn't let up. Murphy gave them the best bullpen options to close out the game. There was nothing he did that you questioned, why'd you bring in this guy? He brought in his guys, his aces, his dogs, in order. Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: And the Rays still found a way. I think this Aris: Yes, yes. Julio A.: could turn the tide. You were in the building. What are your thoughts on that? Aris: like you said, man, that one error in the 12th opened up the floodgates. The leadoff battle hit the groundboard third. First baseman didn't come up with it. You get that out, Julio A.: Joey Ortiz. Aris: we're in business. Yeah, we're in business. Right. Or T's. Right. Julio Elder: That's it, it's over. Aris: Right. what do I think? Julio A.: You're celebrating in Tampa. Aris: Hey, listen, I know Murph. I think it's over tonight. I know what you're saying about the momentum and all, but this guy is up there as these players. They love him. They love gay. Julio A.: He really is. Aris: I speak to Derrick, I speak to Gary Sanchez. He's on the team. A lot of people don't even realize he's the backup catcher. He loves Murph. And Murph loves him. Julio A.: He he is their backup catcher. Aris: Murph loves him. Chris Yellich loves him. I speak to these guys individually. I hey, what you think of Murph? They go up, love him. Love him. They'll die for him. They'll die for him. And what's amazing about that, Murph never played in the major leagues. You got to get respect to be if you never played in the major leagues. Another guy, Bug Shawwalter, never played in the major Julio A.: That's right. Aris: leagues, but you got to earn that respect. Then you got guy like Aaron Boone, established, baseball family. You're gonna let Jazz Chisholm run out there with a lollipop. You're gonna let the players wear neon, do rags, and not say nothing. You lost the clubhouse, brother. They're doing whatever they want. It's only matter of time where you're gonna see a Yankee step on the field wearing an earring. It's gonna happen. Because they're testing them. They're test these players are testing Julio A.: let's go back to the trap real quick. So you you think it's over tonight. Merv's got all the answers. Aris: He's got the Miz pitching, brother. He went five innings last start. You're gonna see fastballs. Galar go go Gal tonight. Yes. Murph. Murph Murph needs to end this tonight. And I'm gonna tell you why. His kids have been at every game. They're missing school. They're playing hooky. He needs to end this tonight so the kids can go back to school. And I told him to murph last night before Julio Elder: Ha ha Julio A.: For the sake of his kid. Aris: the game, and he laughed at me. He said, You got a point. Julio A.: that's funny. That's funny. So his kids are playing. I'd be playing hooky if I was a child of a major league right now, still playing. Absolutely. It's worth it. my kids have missed school for lesser. So that you know what I'm saying. Shout out, shout out to Murphy's kids. Kevin Cash seems to have hit some of the right buttons too, though. Second longest tenured manager in the majors, longest tenured manager Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: in the American League. I love him. He has been a thorn. In Aaron Boone's side, since Aaron Boone started managing, Aris: Yeah. Julio A.: he's always had his number. I have a lot of respect for him, more as a manager than I ever did as a player, especially because he was a Red Sock. But do you what do you what do you think he's saying to his team in the locker room today? If anything, is he that guy? Or is he the guy that said, Listen, I don't have to say anything, you guys know what the deal is. Aris: yeah exactly. What you just said, exactly close. Think about it. These the first few games were close, except for that blowout the other night. Anything could one little play could have made a difference. this this series could easily be two two. Yes. Yes. Yes, Julio A.: Yeah. Yeah. No Aronda doesn't make those errors. Yeah. Aronda doesn't make those errors, they don't lose that game, Aris: they know what they gotta do. They know what they gotta do tonight. They know what they gotta do. look what happened yesterday. The ground water third, game over. See, you can't make mistakes like that, especially in the in the late innings. They know what they gotta do. They know what they're up against. And it's not like they're getting blown out every game, even that Freddie Peralta game, they were in the game. And then the floodgates open once they went to the bullpen roulettes. That's what I call it. Because you don't know what you're getting out of that bullpen when you start bringing these relievers in. But Julio A.: Well, once you get into the extra innings, absolutely. But I do think Murphy dialed up what he needed to dial up and they held him. Look, listen, they they Julio Elder: To win that game. That's it. Julio A.: you d from the fifth inning to the twelfth inning, they held the raise to zero runs. Like that Aris: Yeah. Yes. Julio A.: they did their job. and so I I agree with you. I it could it could be a gentleman sweep. I I do I do see that, you know, Murphy's been dialing it up and they but on the other hand to lose on an Error like that when you stole a game on two errors by Aronda and three errors in the game by the Rays in general earlier in the series. I think Aris: Mm-hmm. Right. Julio A.: is is is it knowing that you threw your best, this is the best you got. Again, Murphy didn't make no mistakes with with his relief. He he wanted to win that game and he didn't. Julio Elder: He wanted to win that game. That's it. He wanted to go. That's it. Julio A.: And I think that's defeating. I think that's defeating at the very least. I think we go back to Milwaukee and they win it in Milwaukee. I think Tampa Bay, did you? Camaro's fired up. These guys, and and again, as long they have to play. I agree with you here, they have to play error, near perfect baseball. And people don't understand the importance of that. Look at these this series. How many games were decided just by bad defense, not great offense? And there's a reason why when you look at a scoreboard, it's runs, hits, and errors. Right? There's a reason why that's the third Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: stat that you look at on it. It's that important. And Joey Aris: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Julio A.: Ortiz not able to finish the game yesterday after playing near perfect baseball. they played near perfect baseball all Julio Elder: he he's having a terrible day today, bro. Julio A.: all game. And and and all it took the last out. Aris: everybody Mm hmm. You know everybody's on Joey. First Julio A.: Go ahead, go ahead. Aris: baseman, he could have caught you know, that was his easy scoop, it just popped out. That's baseball. You know, that nobody's getting on the first baseman. Julio A.: It was an easy scoop. Aris: Yes. Julio Elder: That's true. That's true. That's true. Julio A.: But did you see when Joey first came into the game? There was another ball to throw. I forgot who hit it, but there was another ball that was into. And he underthrew that one too. And that one was scooped. That one was scooped. So a couple of innings before. Aris: Yes, yes. And he scooped it. Yes, a couple of minutes before. Yes. Yes. Yes. Julio A.: So so so Joey's ass was saved once Aris: Yes. Julio A.: already. You gotta do your part. You're in there for defense. He didn't start that game. He was a defensive replacement. And so Aris: Right. Right. Yeah. Julio A.: If if you just do your job, you're winning in Tampa last night and everybody gets to go to school, next week. I think Kevin Cash has got something up there. Maybe you see Nick Martinez come out. I don't know. it's Julio Elder: They're all, they're all they're all hyped. I'm gonna ask you guys a question. Two things. Caminero, you saw how he was limping after he went past first base? It looked like he was really hurt. But then he gets from first to third, bro, and he wasn't limping, you know? So was he faking that? Aris: Yes. Yes. Yes. Then they get a runner. Julio Elder: Was he was he was he faking that? Because then they took him out in third base. Question number one. Question number two, did you see that stare down between Did you see that stare down between Yeah Yeah. Did you see that stare down? Bro, Julio A.: Y Yandy and and Wilson Contreras on the on the on the on the Julio Elder: they were like, Aris: Yes. Yes. Julio Elder: what was that about? Is that are they friends? Or this was really a stare down like Aris: no, let me tell you, man. Let me tell you what what I love about, I don't know if you guys agree, these guys are hungry, man. Both teams. When the Rays played the Yankees, that last series, Julio Elder: Yes. Yes. Julio A.: Both teams. Aris: the Yankees were just playing home run derby. Five runs down, they're not taking pitches to get on base in the late innings. It didn't seem like they were hungry. That's what a guaranteed contract will do for you. You know, guaranteed contracts. These guys here are looking to get paid. They're hungry. And we're seeing hungry baseball Julio A.: Yeah. Yeah. Aris: being played on both teams. Julio A.: Yeah. Julio Elder: And what's the bonus what's the bonus for winning a World Major League World Series? Is it a million dollars? Aris: It's about four hundred, four hundred grand each. Yes, close to that. Yeah. Right. Right. Julio Elder: For hundred grand each player who wins the World Series? Okay. Julio A.: And if you in Tampa, you that's tax you don't pay tax on that, you inc personal income tax, that's it's an extra sixty, in your pocket. Aris: Right, right. But I see hungry, man. Hungry. Hunger. That's the difference. The Yankees, it was pathetic Julio Elder: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Aris: watching Stanton go up two strikeouts, two abats, He was what does he care? He's getting paid regardless. The pet the fire. You don't see no fire on the Yankees. Julio A.: Stan was a desperation case to begin with. listen, I have had my issues with Aaron Boone over the years. I am not someone who has not criticized, I have definitely criticized him, particularly with his bullpen use. However, Aris: Mm-hmm. Julio A.: I'm also, as a lifelong Yankee fan, am the first to admit that he has the hardest job in baseball. Because every year, the Yankee, for whatever reason, even though this ownership has never met the level. The fans still expect World Series or bust. The fans, first and foremost, need to understand that Daddy Steinbrenner is no longer with us. And this World Series or bust mentality doesn't exist inside the house, in the castle. That's not what they're saying. So, first and foremost, that there's a lot that Aaron Boone gets that is not even his fault. It starts at the top and then Brian Cashman. And then Aaron Boone just has to manage who he has. And I agree with you, he might have lost the locker room, but he's not responsible for bringing Jazz Chisel. He's not responsible for bringing Giancarlo on a massive contract and then have him play, about 35% of his gains over the life of his guy. So that Aaron Boone Julio Elder: Sweet ardeal. Julio A.: has to play with the handy's dealt. that said, you brought it up before. I'm gonna bring it up one more time since we we're let's move on from the World Series. Aaron Boone was just signed to a one-year contract. To me, that gives the Yankees a year to find their replacement. Aaron Boone is done. This is a lame duck administration. What are your thoughts? Aris: Okay, f first of all, he's got one year left on his current contract. It was a three-year deal. This is yeah. No, no, no. Now I'm gonna Julio A.: Right, with no re s they haven't re signed him. Right. Aris: tell you what the problem is. The problem is you need to let Aaron Boone manage. Aaron Boone has not written a lineup since he's been there. How do I know this? I asked him at the baseball writers' dinner and he laughed. I I gave him the napkin and a pen. I said, Hey, do me a favor. If you were to write your own lineup, give it to me here. And he laughed. He just walked away from me. I sat with his son, Brandon Boone, at one of the games. I sat in the family section. The way we're talking now, I was talking to son, he agreed with everything I said. And he said, You know, I'm not supposed to say this. My father's very frustrated because the fans are beating him up, the media's beating him up, and they don't let him manage. He's just a messenger. The analytics people make the lineup up. Really, now, if Aaron Boone did his own lineup, do you really think he'd bet Paul Goldschmidt first. Really? Paul a power hitter first, right? Am I right? Yeah. Now, if this analytic deal is back around Julio Elder: He hits home runs, but nobody on base. Aris: right. They've done the league in solo homes, the Yankees. Now, if this analytics crew ran the Yankees back in 96, you know who would be the leadoff hitter back in 96? Tino Martinez. He would have been the leadoff hitter. They got this mentality, Julio A.: Yeah. Right. Aris: these geeks that never played the game of let the power hitter get five at bats so he could hit five home runs. This is the mentality. No, don't work like that, brother. You got to get on base for the power hitter and hit a three-run homer. Solo homers, come on, man. They're a waste. They're a waste. You gotta let Aaron Boone manage. Julio A.: Yeah. Wha well, Aris: They're relying on analytics too much. Julio A.: Well, first and for for foremost, you heard it here first on the No Good Sports Podcast. Aaron Boone hasn't written a lineup in a very long time. And we've got an inside source that said so. Julio Elder: And that's why you gotta hit subscribe and that's why you gotta tell your friends about this podcast, because we get people like Aris on who have inside information and he ain't got a problem talking about it. That's right. Those are exclusives. Julio A.: Let's get some comments. Let's get some comments in the comment section talking about what we just heard. so Aaron Boone, it it's tough on him. And and you know, someone like you said earlier, he is a baseball guy, kind of like nepotism almost, right? His whole family, they're like the first family, they're like the mannings of baseball. They they Julio Elder: Of baseball. Julio A.: they've been doing it forever, many generations. His brother, they've been, you know, their players, their managers. So he he is a baseball insider for sure. I know he'll be fine wherever he ends up. but is next year a referendum on his tenure as a Yankee? Is it World Series or bus? And if it is, have the Yankees and particularly Brian Cashman put him in the best position possible. Aris: He's not going anywhere. I don't know what goes on there. Brian and Aaron are homies. Hank is dead. George is dead. Hal is clueless. They're running stuff. Right now, Brian Castman is totally Julio Elder: Ha ha Aris: in charge. He is running stuff. His whole coaching staff, no, nobody's ever played in the major leagues. This is New York Yankees. You got a coaching staff. You got three hitting coaches that don't have now one major league hit. You got three pitching coaches that never pitched one major league inning. This is what's leading the Yankees. And then you wonder why they're running out there with neon. The coaches don't get in their face. Who are they that they've never played in the mazes? They're getting they're walking around eggshells thinking, I love my check. I love my pay my job. Let me just be quiet. Because I spoke to Willie Randolph yesterday. I said, Hey Willie, what would you have told Jazz if he walked out there with a lollipop? He said, as soon as he came into the dugout, I would have took him to the back, took the lollipop out of his mouth. And read them the right act. I wouldn't have showed them up on the field. They won't do that, these coaches. They not they don't have major league experience. It's the same thing with the Met coaches. They don't have Major League Julio A.: No, Yeah. Yeah. Aris: experience. Julio Elder: Yeah. Aris: This is what's leading you. Julio Elder: And unfortunately that's affecting the game at the most basic level, Julio A.: What Julio Elder: which is fans that want to see it real baseball. Julio A.: Well, I I was just gonna get to that because there's another side of this analytics argument that we haven't touched upon, which is analytics is what created the Tampa Bay Rays and the Milwaukee Brewers. Both teams are by design. And that design is successful and has gotten them here. This isn't these aren't flukes, the these are guys who Take the Freddie Peralta's who had a great career and then went to the Mets and became nothing and resurrected him back because they have the coaching staff to do it. But they also know he's good for this amount of time with this amount of stuff. Right. It's the analytics that say we know how to do a relief game where my starters only gonna give me two, two and a half, maybe three innings intentionally, and I'm gonna play a bullpen game. Those are analytics because those are that's not a traditional approach. I actually thought Cash was brilliant for saying this yesterday. He said it yesterday in the postgame. Jeter, And they talk about his bullpen. He goes, Well, the old adage used to be you get to the starter, get them out, you get to their bullpen. I don't know if that's how you want to manage against the Brewers, right? Like he said it. and that's again, that's analytics, the way you design and construct. A team like that. So you've got the side where it's like, yeah, the analytics say, you don't roll out there with a lollipop, jazz chisholm's gonna give you X amount of home runs in the sixth spot, whatever, four behind J. I don't know how they do it. But on the flip side, the analytics say we develop our players like this, we maximize our talents as best we can until they hit certain age or certain level or certain free agency period, and then we, repeat and rinse. Aris: this analytics has created regular season games like spring training games where where they got a plan for about to get their work in. And if I'm if I'm gonna put a pitch out there and he's gonna blow out the side on 10 pitches, three strikeouts, I'm bringing them back next in. It's not like no, it's this guy's turn. This is what's going on. See, it's a spring training mentality. That's what's going on here. And what you said about the Julio A.: Yeah. Aris: both teams with the analytics. Murphy will listen to the analytic guys and say thank you and do it his way. If he if he doesn't like what he heard. left day test. The other night Julio A.: Mm. Aris: he brought in Woodruff to pitch the last inning, the starter. That was Murphy. Julio A.: He did. Aris: That was an analytics call. That was Murphy from the heart. We got a blowout. This guy been Julio A.: That's a good point. Aris: hurt all year. Let him let me let me get him a World Series appearance. See what I say? That was an analytics. Julio A.: That's a good point. Julio Elder: So one one other side of the analytics is that, yeah, it's good to look at the science of lear learning about what are the the the strengths and Julio A.: Information is power, right? Julio Elder: the information is power. But at the same time, you can't take it to the point where you just mentioned about Aaron Boone. You have to be able to let the manager who is with these guys in the locker room, who is it, he's with these guys, you know, when they're on the plane or they're on the bus or where they're at after a game at night or maybe in somebody's lawn having a barbecue. These guys know these guys. So it's it's it's a it's analytics can't tell you when you look at the eyes of a Caminero, right, who was limping. And what did he say yesterday? He said that even if my leg is broken, I'm gonna play tomorrow. Julio A.: Going out there, yeah. Yeah. Julio Elder: so so so only a manager who's okay, you can listen to the science, but you gotta look at this guy's eyes. And if he says, yo, I want to play, you let him play, right? that's the different that's the other side and that's what you're saying, Iris, that you have Murphy. Murphy listens, looks at the analytics, but he makes his own decisions sometimes. And that's important. And that's the difference. And that's and that's what I I think that there's no balance there. There's no balance there. Julio A.: But a as an insider, Aris, how how many what's the ratio of teams that are have managers like Murph versus managers like what you're you know, claim Aaron Boone, for example, who's just, you know, following the numbers, taking a check versus today, yeah. No, no, the eye test isn't there. No. Julio Elder: Ha ha ha. Julio A.: Well, you brought up the Dodgers. are they old? Are they done? Or is the dynasty over? Or or do do they, you know, are they the Dodgers? Julio Elder: Are they coming back? Ha ha ha. Yeah, I Yeah, I was telling Julio one of the previous podcasts. We had we had a friend, Chewy Torres, he was commissioner of of boxing and he was a world boxing champion. And he told us that one day. Yeah, Julio A.: First Puerto Rican world boxing champion. Julio Elder: first party can work and the first one who got the national anthem, other than the United States national anthem, you know, played at a game. That's another story for another day. But anyway, Chewy was very into boxing, and one day I asked him that same question. And I said, Check we, what's all these players, you these boxers, you they come in and all of a sudden they get to the top and they lose. He said, when you when you're sleeping on a burlap sack and you have to feed your family and you're out in the cold, when you go into that ring, you go into that ring, you're hungry, bro. You'll get punched, you get punched everywhere, but you fight back. But once you become a champion, you're sleeping on satin sheets in five star hotels, and you would you don't have that same hunger, Julio. Ha ha ha Julio A.: yeah, yeah. And you know, it's funny that you say that because you know the the boxing obviously is losing a lot of popularity at MMA, but they've got a big fight this weekend. Canelo, who has been wearing Versace slippers for about 15 years now, is you know, he's he's coming out and he's fighting against a very, very hungry champion, but he's also coming in as the challenger against Mibili. Mabidi? Christian Mabili? Some saying if he doesn't win now at 36, he's lost his last one. is it over for Canelo? And you know, listening to what said, Chuiz said, sounds like sounds like he's he's the underdog for a reason. Julio Elder: Yeah. They don't keep that hunger. And that's what's happening in baseball. And I think that, Aris, you you gave a very good exp a good very good explanation. You know, I didn't know it was that deep. I didn't know it was that all thirty teams, you know, Harley, none of them are off the analytics. They're all into analytics. And and and it's the question of how much of the analytics, because the science is good, but if you don't apply it, you know, the right way, you know, if you're letting somebody do your your your lineup. So means you tell me that you don't have a role in putting in who's gonna bat first and who's gonna bat third? Shit. Julio A.: You're there just for a show al almost, right? 'cause you need a guy in a uniform. You need a guy in a uniform, yeah. Julio Elder: So that so Julio A.: But that the just because you're a messenger, there's still ways in which you can reach your team to maximize each individual potential, which is what the difference between Julio Elder: Motivation. Julio A.: a guy like Murphy and Cash versus a you know a Boone who's you know lost control. I haven't heard anybody speak about Boone, including Aaron Judge, the way anybody who played for Kevin Cash or Murphy are speaking about Cash and Murph. again. You don't see former ball players who got traded coming back and rooting for their former team. I just never saw it. Those guys Julio Elder: I saw some of y I saw some of your pictures. I saw some of your pictures. Julio A.: And how how many of them? That's wild. it's wild. You just don't see that. But you see the love, that obviously the players had for that organization. Some of those names you mentioned did have played for Kevin Cash and some of those are obviously are older legends. But how many of them have been arrayed for life that you saw? None of them, I imagine. Not even Mr. Ray. He also won a ring with the Giants, didn't he? He won a ring with Buster Posey and the Giants, I believe. And so, no, he's won elsewhere, and he's still considered that's right for Bruce Bochi. And he's won in other places. He's played many other teams, not just one other team. He's been on multiple teams, but here he is coming back. So obviously, there's something to be said about that. It's unfortunate that that's not part of their market. It's not part of their whole marketing scheme. We're a family. Once a Ray, always a Ray. The Knicks do that. And the Knicks, up until last year, have been a floundering team for 53 years. But you see that in basketball the time. The Knicks have Legends Row. And you know, there's Mello, there's Larry Johnson, Latrell Sprewell. The only one there who was a Knicks for life is Patrick. Everybody Julio Elder: Patrick. Julio A.: else, everybody else either came from somewhere else or went somewhere else, but they got that. You see that in basketball. I've well, at least with the Knicks. I've never seen that in baseball. It was beautiful to see. I'm hoping, i if they don't if they don't become managers, at least they get field passes as former players and they can go talk to these guys, man. get in their ear. That's that's the whole point of having these legends, right? You get them to come back to talk to the youngin. I always forget the Sonic is. I always forget the Sonic. It's a it's a blip on the radar. It's a blip on the radar. No, you're you're absolutely right. Even Patrick, even our greatest, I guess Walt Clyde is the only one who can qualify, you know. Julio Elder: What? Julio A.: Yeah. Mm. Julio Elder: Yes. Julio A.: Yeah. Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: Yeah. Yep. Yep. Well 'cause you can't because the Yankees have had so many. You can't just say this is the greatest Yankee ever. The Pittsburgh Pirates are easy. Clemente's the greatest pirate ever. That's why there's a Statue of Clemente. Right? Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh. There's a few of them. Jim Jim yes. Julio Elder: Which by the way is a picture there's a picture there's a picture of us three in front of that statue, remember that? Julio A.: Jim two thousand two thousand six. Two thousand six All-Star game in Pittsburgh. I do remember that. That you you go outside of, right? You go outside of some of these places and you you all Tony Gwynn. There's this right, there's Mr. Gwynn. Willie Mays is outside of what used to be, I don't know what they call it now, Cat Pac-Bell Stadium or whatever. Willie Mays is the greatest giant ever. you can't do that with the Yankees. Who are you gonna do? Yogi Barrow for the Ten Rings or Babe Ruth, you know, for the 700 home runs, or Mickey Manov. And Julio Elder: Mickey Manso? Mickey Manso? Julio A.: so that's why. They got no, you don't go top three, then you got three statues. You go Monument Park, you give everybody a plaque who gets a number retired, and and you call it a day. And w the speaking about community, the Yankees historically have been terrible with the local community, terrible with fans in general. The the line that they have between players and fans is not a thin line. It's a thick one. And there's a lot of security in between. There's no access to anything ever. Julio Elder: Don't get arrest started on the security part of the Yankees, please. Julio A.: however, however, that's another show. However, when they switched from the old stadium to the new stadium and they opened up Monument Park to the public, one of the things I think that makes baseball so great, which is the numbers, the records, history. Baseball is steeped and embedded in history and What baseball is going through now, this labor crisis, is a labor crisis that the country's going through. just integration in the 40s, just the prohibition in the 20s, and and so baseball has always been a microcosm of American society in a way that no other sport can compare. And I think opening up the stadium, creating Avenues with which you say, let's honor our history, which is what you were alluding to earlier about the race. They just don't do it. they've been around a short period of time, but their history is rich. Their history's deep. They've been to the World Series three. So this is their third time. Yeah, they lost. Julio Elder: Twice twice. Third time? I thought it was twice. Julio A.: No, they lost it in the arts, I thought, right? And then they lost again. They they lost the same. They lost to the Phillies and then they lost to who they lose to a couple years ago. Was it the Dodgers? Yeah, they went twice already. This is their third time. And so, and the a and and how many times have they competed for the American League East and have been to the playoffs, right? World Series Julio Elder: Right. Julio A.: appearances aside. So, you start honoring that history and you start leaning into a little bit of what the baseball is. But then also, if you're not gonna have a star, if you if you're gonna make the the the The commitment to get them while they're young, when we can't afford them no more, we get rid of them, rinse, and repeat. Then you've got to market them while they're still young. You've got to make sure that the city knows who these people are while they're there. Junior Camaro should be on every billboard on the way to the stadium in both directions on the highway. Right? the fact that you're telling me all this and Yandy, Julio Elder: And yeah, indeed, did. Julio A.: first of all, can we also talk about how Yandy is like he I'm I'm ten years older than Yankee, Yandy, and I look younger than him, bro. He's got a full white goatee. What is it with these players going gray, bro? Julio Elder: Ha ha Julio A.: so outside Julio Elder: Ha ha ha Julio A.: of Aaron Boone, you're a baseball insider. Who who else is on the hot seat for next year? I know it's a little premature. I know the World Series is not over, but if you could give me your just in terms of managerial decisions, who's on the hot seat? Who's and who do you think could be coming in? Because I'll tell you, if if Aaron Boone's only got one more year left, I think that's a year. To get either Carlos Beltran or Jorge Posada ready to Julio Elder: Or what about what about Gora? Julio A.: I don't want to go down a Yankees. Julio Elder: Ha ha ha Julio A.: Right. Right. They didn't do that either. Julio Elder: She said that? Julio A.: I didn't know that. Jorge's definitely not gonna be in contention as long as We gotta get Brian on the show to to to talk about some of the stuff that we're talking about here today. If you like what you're hearing, let's get a like, subscribe, post, share, and comment below. Comments are one of the best ways to let us know that you're listening and whether you like the takes of the content that we get here. Aris, baseball Julio Elder: you mentioned about a statue in the Bronx. Very few people know, two blocks up from Yankee Stadium on 161st Street, between Walton Julio A.: It's true. Julio Elder: and the Grand Concourse, across the street from the courthouse and across the street Julio A.: Lugaric Julio Elder: from the park, there is a plaza. There's a small plaque there with a bat. And you know what that plaza is called? Lou Gehrig Plaza. Nobody pays attention to that. Julio A.: It's true. Julio Elder: One of the con one of the criticisms I've always had at the Yankees were, why don't you use that plaza to have some events? Because that was one of your greatest players, and the community doesn't even know that that plaza is there unless you accidentally bump into that bat when you're walking up. Yes. Yes. Julio A.: Bad Bunny used it. Bad Bunny used it because he said, I want the speakers to be played on the plaza so they can hear me. And you have people Julio Elder: Ha ha ha. Julio A.: picnicking, listening to the concert while he was performing Yankee Stadium. So it's possible. It is possible. Aris, thank you so much for joining us. We definitely want to have you back during the off season. Let's get you let's get you out here for the Yeah, Julio Elder: No we want you to talk about your book. I wanna hear about your book, bro. Julio A.: Before we leave, you I do want you to shout out what you've been doing. Where can, our audience find you? Where can we find your work? I know you've got a meet match. Talk a little bit about that before you log off. Julio Elder: It's open. Julio A.: Yeah. Ooh shots fired Julio Elder: Ping, ping, ping. Julio A.: Well, we're definitely gonna have you during the winter meetings. We'll have you back. Will you be at the winter meetings in person? Well, if they do, we're gonna get you on on the show. Maybe even get a live with you while while you're there. If not, you have a wonderful time tonight. Let's try to get you back on in the off season. Thanks so much, Ares, for showing up. Julio Elder: Aris, congratulations on your books, man, and thank you so much, my brother. You take care. Stay safe. and and the and but and he's still playing baseball. That was a great conversation. We've been talking a lot about Aris, and you know, we've had mixed you know views on Aris because just in the beginning, that a lot a lot of you never heard this, but it took us about 15-20 minutes just to get him on. Because Aris is definitely not high-tech, so we didn't even know that his phone went up. That's another story for another day, but It it it was it paid off because Aries is one of those individuals that because of the fact that his background, I mean, he worked in the most incredible situations in Rikers Island. So he has no fear. He has no fear in terms of being able to just say things and talk to people. And his stories are incredible. So I love having Julio A.: No, that was great. That was great. Julio Elder: Aries. I'm glad that we were able to get him and we definitely want to bring him back and Julio A.: Aaron Boone, according to Aaron Aaron Boone's directly. And and his son. Aaron Boone hasn't written out a lineup in a long time. You heard it here on the No Good Sports Podcast. Don't forget to share, like, and subscribe, comment below. that was probably our most explosive interview to date. And this is we're only in episode five. Julio Elder: And those are the type of things that people gonna hear when they when when they come to our, you know, no good sports podcast because we are as father and son, that's one thing. But we both have different experiences, we have different contacts, we have different connections. And because we can bring those together, sometimes things like today occur where you will hear things that you're not gonna Julio A.: Also, I Julio Elder: hear anywhere else. Julio A.: that's right. And I he reminded me, I honestly forgot that we are the only father-son sports duo on the internet. yeah, so Julio Elder: Yeah. He noticed it. Harris noticed it. Julio A.: that was that was that was endearing and flattering. I I had forgot about that. let's move on. We got one more thing in baseball that I want to talk about that you brought up that I think is important on this show specifically. And that is Francisco Lindor winning the Roberto Francisco Lindor wins the Girl Beto Clemente Award for his philanthropy in the community. we've heard it many, many times, but a lot of ball players consider this as important as anything that they do in terms of awards. Receiving one is as important as anything award that they get for anything they do on field. it really sort of validates the work that they put in. Every team has, for those who don't know, every team has to nominate a player. to do a num Julio Elder: All thirty teams, that's right. Julio A.: to to to to this award so you're competing against 29 other people and then that player that gets nominated from their team is nominated from a team where not just you but everybody on the team has to do a certain number of community service hours those that go above and beyond to get nominated then you're with Julio Elder: That's right. Julio A.: 29 others who have gone above and beyond their community And it can be anything. As far as I can tell, there are no restrictions Julio Elder: No. Julio A.: on what it means. If you want to support a Black Lives Matter, or if you believe, you know, anti police brutality, or in Francisco Lindora's case, a lot of work in Puerto Rico specifically. So it's on the island and in Queens Julio Elder: He about s he about s five or s six. Yeah. And in Queens, yes. Julio A.: in New York. And it was specific there was a number of organizations around hurricane relief and just general Know a lot of people don't know the status in Puerto Rico, but you can be well off and still not have hot water or water in general. You may not have power, you're Julio Elder: What or electricity? Julio A.: not gonna have internet if you don't have a generator that can get you to Starlink or whatever you use. And so Francisco also, just in terms of day-to-day life has affected people. And so this award meant a lot to him. You actually had an interview. with Lindor what this award meant to him. Julio Elder: Well, I I'm first of all, I'm very proud not to tap myself on the back, but to to my cred to my credit, I found out there was a press conference held on Friday before when they first knew that Lindor had won, but it was it was a blackout. Only they invited reporters to have a one on one through Zoom with Lindor, but we could not mention that he won until The award was officially announced on Monday. so that he's gonna be given the award because the award is given on the third game of the World Series every year. Every year Julio A.: That's right. On the field. Julio Elder: on the field, the third game of the World Series, you know, they bring in and they give the the award. So we had a press conference the week before, four days before, with Lindor, through Zoom, and there was about 20-something reporters that were invited, blah, blah, blah. A lot of New York reporters. I got a message at the last minute. My editor, Robert Rizzo, told me, listen, we got an invitation. I have not been, I'm in Puerto Rico, have not been visiting my website a lot to see what invitations we got. So I said, hey, I'm gonna be on that. Let me know. He sent me the link. So we go on, and I just, go on on my phone, like Ares just did, but I'm on, I'm on my porch. And I just wanna listen to the old thing. I didn't know that there was a protocol. Apparently, you had to have put down which is your question and what they, you raise your hand. I don't see that on my phone. All I know is that I heard some questions and I see Lindor speaking. So the second question, I just popped in and say, Hi. Hey, Lindor, I'm gonna ask you a question. I'm in Puerto Rico. So I want to know, what do you think getting this award? What's the impact of that in Puerto Rico? And he answered it. And to and to my surprise, my editor sends me a note that next day he says, Bro, you're famous. Because that was the question that the Mets used on their social media. He Julio A.: yes, that is correct. Julio Elder: said the only mistake was I never said Julio Pawon, nothing of sports. Yeah, but yeah, Julio A.: you keep doing that. So you don't get the credit. See Julio Elder: but the question was the key question. He talked about how he felt that this would be like something that's motivational. for for the kids in Puerto Rico who all wanna be another Huberto Clemente. and he mentioned how proud he was that he was part of that group of the five other Puerto Ricans that have won that award. You know, Carlos Delgado, Beltrán, Yadi Molina, Julio A.: Mm-hmm. Julio Elder: Seattle Mariners, se me sigue olvidando the first Julio A.: Edgar Julio Elder: one. Edgar Martinez was the first one. So, you know, we've had several Puerto Ricans who have won that award and he talked about how he felt, you know, very proud. But he said something that I didn't even know. He said that what's gonna make him proud is that for the for the rest of his career in baseball, number twenty one will be on his cap. I didn't know that that's part of the part of the award. If if you if you win it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Julio A.: so it's semi r you know. That's awesome. So you you win it you're like it's like an Academy Award winner. You're a you're a they're you're a Roberto Clemente award winner for life. It isn't like a one year thing. It's Julio Elder: For life. So it's and it's and it's it's embedded in your cap and on his batting helmet. His batting helmet and his cap will always have number twenty one for the rest of his career. Julio A.: That's awesome. It that's awesome. That's awesome. Julio Elder: So yeah, that was very important. And I'm glad that, he won it because he does do a lot. I'm gonna when I get back to New York, I'm gonna talk to him next season and see if he could do some stuff in the Bronx because the Bronx is always like, you know, we got a lot of Puerto Ricans up there, but we don't have nothing. I know, I know. Julio A.: Well well that there might be some turf issues, you know, with Julio Elder: We the the last one we were able to do that was Carlos Delgado. I once went up to Carlos when he was in Queens and I said to him, Listen, you do a lot of stuff Julio A.: That's right. Julio Elder: in Queens, you do some stuff in Puerto Rico. But do you know that one of the largest populations of Puerto Ricans is in the Bronx? So he said to me straight out, Búcame algo. He said, find me something. And I found them the Castle Hill Little League, which is and and he was Julio A.: yeah, I remember so Julio Elder: able to go up there, develop a relationship. So I'm Julio A.: Well Julio Elder: gonna try to do that with Lindor to try to get him up to to the Bronx. Julio A.: You gotta see if Lindor can get the rest of his teammates in that locker room together. Julio Elder: Ha Julio A.: Maybe they do a group trip and, start spending some time together off the field and it might translate to better success on the field. Knicks finally won a game yesterday. they did it against the Detroit Pistons at home. You had mentioned earlier, who was it? Julio Elder: Well, Julio, let me ask you a question. Because you're the real avid Nick fan here, right? Right? So you being the avid Julio A.: Huge. Yes. Love the Knicks. Knicks and five. Julio Elder: Nick fan, right? how did you feel the fact that, okay, you understood and you said it very clearly in our last podcast that you didn't think they were gonna win because all the commotion, like when the orange guy showed up at the what's your game and that threw them off. These guys go on with a particular trait every day, right? And being the first Julio A.: Regiment. Julio Elder: day, giving out the award, giving out the rings, you know, the hoopla. You said it very clearly. You said you knew that they were not gonna win that game. And you were right. But then they don't win the second game. And they don't win the third game. You as a fan, what was going through your head? Julio A.: I was laughing if I'm being honest. I was laughing Julio Elder: Ha ha ha Julio A.: because we started 0 3 last year. People have very short memories. Julio Elder: I didn't know that. Julio A.: We started 0 3 last year and it was Mike Brown in his first year, and everybody was like, We did we made the wrong decision. Mike Brown is terrible. He's gotta go. Mikhail Bridges and those damn picks. We gave up too much to get him. you know, Kat looks lost in this offense. We're it's it's if history's gonna repeat itself, then it has to start at the beginning of the season. We start auto and three. I'm okay with that. We bludgeoned the Pistons yesterday coming out of the half, Julio Elder: And they were undefeated. Julio A.: and they were undefeated. And it just goes to show that on any given night, you know, they can just play their game and turn it on. There's nobody I'm not afraid of anyone in the NBA. Also, there's a lot of injuries going on right now and I just want to stay healthy. So if we got through a one and four start, a one and three start and in our first four games and and everyone's still intact. Jose's got a little Alvarado's got a little ankle sprain. But if we just keep our team intact and we stay healthy, then it's just we're in it for the long haul. I told you this a couple episodes ago. Mike Brown does not coach for the regular season. He does not coach to win every game and become the first seed and have tired legs going into the playoffs. He coaches for the play the long haul. So Yeah, it took a couple games to get us going. Kat, I think, showed what he can do on a nightly basis if he wants to. Julio Elder: You get twenty seven points. Julio A.: 27, but 20, 23, I think. Maybe 20, 27. 27, but he had 20 rebounds. You know, and he put he Julio Elder: Points. Yeah. He played his game. He played his game. Julio A.: he if when he's dominant like that, we're just regardless of what everybody else is doing, we're hard to beat. Because every team needs a big man. Julio Elder: And he didn't get fouled out. He didn't get fouled out, which is his problem. Julio A.: I think that's a huge thing. I also think people tend to underestimate the strength of schedule, and we just played a series of games against all playoff teams. We there's you know what I mean? We went through all of them. We went through Orlando, Philadelphia, Boston, and then Detroit. That was the number one seed last year. They had the best record in the East last year in the regular season. So it's like we're also just we haven't caught a break yet. We haven't had a breather. I also think Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: it's it this there's a world in which I don't know this is when you bring in the team psychologists or psychiatrists, because there's a world in which you Julio Elder: Ha ha ha. Julio A.: have to get used to the fact that you are defending champions and every game is gonna feel like a playoff for the other team. Every game, we gotta beat the champs. We got gotta beat the champs. And Julio Elder: That's right. They're going after you. They're going after you. That's right. Julio A.: so it it that is going to be mentally. Not physically, because it's still basketball, it's still the thing, like you said, it's still regimented, you still got to shoot, you still got a defense, you still gotta, all the things you've been doing since the childhood. But that mental fortitude to understand that everyone's gonna bring their A game every game you play. Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: Cause you are the defending champs. You are the one everywhere, you're Julio Elder: Copy difficult. Julio A.: the litmus test now. You already broke free agency. You know what I mean? The Knicks win. The Celtics blow up their roster. The Phil Philadelphia 76ers blow up their roster, right? Minnesota blows up their roster. Like all these things, like they changed the landscape of the NBA since the Knicks won. So you already did. So now you gotta play it out. What does that team look like again? You are the litmus test. Are we good enough to be championship level? And so that that's gonna be a a a theme all season for us. I think Julio Elder: had also said something interesting as avid Nick fans. You you said that you didn't think they were gonna win the championship again this year, they are gonna be a strong team. They're gonna be in the playoffs. They're gonna Julio A.: Yep. Yep. Julio Elder: give us they're gonna give us a lot of excitement. and us New Yorkers, you know, we we love nothing but, you know, being in the capital of the world, we get all the excitement. So yeah, the Julio A.: Well let me Julio Elder: the the the Knicks are not gonna just disappear because they won a game. Yeah, they won one championship. They're gonna be a strong team coming up. And who knows? You never know what's the the all the end result. But we know you're gonna get caliber games. Julio A.: Yeah, it's also too early to make these kinds of predictions, right? I made that prediction before Jalen Williams broke his foot in two different places. And now the Thunder, went from competing against the San Antonio Spurs to can they even sustain that injury without him for the course of the season? So it's like, Julio Elder: Yeah. Ooh. Yeah. Yeah. Julio A.: it's too early to make those kinds of predictions. The Knicks have to obviously stay healthy and do their part. Maybe there's a world now where it opens up and cause San Antonio doesn't really have competition in terms of talent on paper and what they did last year and who can repeat and who can't. The thunder's out. So who's gonna compete again? we heard our boy Hector a couple of weeks ago. Denver's old they're aging. They're Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: not it. Luca is just started with this team. It just became his team this year. Last for the last couple years it was LeBron's team together with him in tandem, but it was LeBron's team. So that's gonna take a year or two to figure out. So the West is up in the, without the Thunder, it's San Antonio and then everyone else. And the East, it's not like it's the Knicks and everyone else. It it it Julio Elder: No. Julio A.: there's a number of very strong teams. And if the Knicks can't stay healthy, Julio Elder: Philadelphia. Julio A.: Or Philadelphia can any one injury can alter the entire team's landscape, unless you're Boston, apparently, because they won the second seed last year without Tatum. So th there's exceptions, but generally speaking, a star in the NBA can make a break a season. And if your star is out, just one play it. And Julio Elder: Just one player, that's right. Yeah. Julio A.: so, you know, can Philly sustain what Philly's doing? Who knows? I I don't know. I do know that the NBA has been a very exciting first week. Speaking of Luka Doncic here on the West Coast, we're talking about multiple, you know, triple double all adjacent games. You know what I mean? against Julio Elder: Who Julio A.: the Lakers the other day. Eight threes. He shot eight three pointers, ten assists and an eighteen point comeback. You know, Julio Elder: Shew. Julio A.: the the Lakers are looking good. But I do think, like I said, the landscape in the West got a lot easier if you are the Spurs. If you're a Spurs fan, you're you're you're not lamenting the injury to Williams too much. In the East, I think a lot of work has to be done. But again, if you're Mike Brown, you don't worry about the first seed. If you're in the top four and you stay healthy, I think anything can happen. So I think you're Julio Elder: You're you're you're in. It's good. Julio A.: okay. I think the Knicks are gonna be okay. Everyone's freaking out. I'm not freaking out. I'm not calling for anyone's job. I'm not Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: calling. I also let's not forget, not even four years ago, we weren't talking title. So, we won one. Let's not get greedy. Enjoy Julio Elder: Let's just relax and enjoy it. Julio A.: the ride. You get to talk your shit all year until they crown another champ. Talk your shit. Don't talk your shit to your own team. We're gonna be okay. Mikhail Bridges is gonna be fine. All right, I know he's averaging 3.3 points a game right now, but it gets better. Let it go. Do not call for Mike Brown's head. Julio Elder: Let it go. Please. Take take it. Take it take take it like we say in Puerto Rico, bájale una, bájale though, you know, bring the notch down a little bit, you know. Julio A.: br bring it down a little just a little bit. Julio Elder: These guys deserve it. Soccer. Julio A.: the ballon de or was this past week. It'd be weird if we didn't talk about it. Harry Kane in an upset Julio Elder: Who? Julio A.: beat both Laminomall and Killian Mbappe for the award. The award generally is not just for the best goalscorer, but for the best all-around player in Europe. And Harry Julio Elder: Wow. Julio A.: Kane won the award. And he's like the elder statesman. So shout out to Harry Kane and Alexia Puteyas, who won the women's award. And if anyone's wondering, because all you know about football, the beautiful game, or as you call it, soccer in the United States, Julio Elder: Mm-hmm. Julio A.: is Leonel Messi. Messi came in fifth, fifth place for the Bologna. Julio Elder: Bendito, bendito. Julio A.: and then I do want to bring up one more time Canelo Alvarez is basically coming out of retirement. I mean, the last time he fought, he did not win. he is 36 years old and he is playing fighting against Christian and Billy, who is the undefeated WBC super middleweight champion. He's from France and has no losses and one draw on his record. Julio Elder: Hm. How many how how many fights? Julio A.: how many fights? what is Christian and Billy's full record? Let's see. Christian and Billy is twenty nine and one with twenty four by way of Julio Elder: Oof. Julio A.: and this is for the super middle weight. So we're talking 168, 168, 659, under 170. Canelo had been at this weight before when he lost. I don't know why he Julio Elder: When Canelo was hungry, he was the he was the he was the man. Julio A.: feels like he still needs to box. I know he invested well. but I do want to get to a future podcast. We are we are 115 into this, so I don't want to go too long today. Julio Elder: No, we have we have a person that I think we'd like to invite, Rich Mancuso. Rich is our boxing editor. and Rich is like super involved with a lot of these boxes, knows in person, like Aris in baseball. Rich is our guy in boxing. Julio A.: like the the rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico specifically in boxing. in terms of countries outside of the United States, Mexico has the most champions, followed by the UK, followed by Japan, and then Puerto Rico. And Mexico has 166 champions. Puerto Rico has Julio Elder: And by the way, we're the smallest we're the smallest of those countries. And yet we have yes. Yes. And and yet we have Julio A.: Of those countries in the top five, yes. But we've had 68. 68 champs over the years. as of late, you know, Puerto Ricans really have dominated the women's circuit, not so much the men's. Canelo has definitely been the face of boxing for the last decade or so. But if he loses tomorrow, does it tarnish a legacy that was already cemented? He does not have to fight. There's absolutely nothing to prove. He is Mexico. Mexico's, like I said, 166 champs. He is the youngest ever Mexican champion. He's in books. Does it tarnish his image if he loses? Julio Elder: Well, the point is that, that they're like in most sports, but especially in boxing, because in baseball, you don't have that because other people have the have a decision over your life. You can't be 40 years old and say, I want to continue to play. If nobody signs you, you're not playing, right? But boxing, you make your own decisions. Boxing, you are the general manager. You're the president. You're the one who makes the decisions. And we've seen that many times before, where boxers who they've gave it all. But for some reason, they want to come back. They want to come back. I remember talking to Chegwee about that. Check we was one of those persons that he never did. He said he didn't like to get hit. He said he said he was in one fight one day. I forgot which is the details, Julio. And he said that, you know, he's he goes to the corner, right? His by the third round, and and his corner man is telling him, Yo, sigando, sigando, and notape, no te tapigando. Don't worry, he's not hitting you, he's not hitting you hard. So Chewy by the third round looked at the guy and said, Well, if he's not hitting me hard, who the hell is? Because I'm feeling Julio A.: Ha ha ha. Julio Elder: it. He said, so so Julio A.: shit, that's funny. Julio Elder: you know, that was Chewy and he once told me the same thing. He says, for some reason, some boxers, a lot of them was because they they they they misspent their money and they feel that financially they they Julio A.: He's not in that boat though. Julio Elder: No, I know. That's why it makes it this so difficult, which is the other part that he said that he told me that back then. He says, is the ego. He said, you know, the ego of being out of what you have been doing all your life. What has got you from rags to riches all your life has been all you know is boxing. And now you're out of boxing. You feel like you just got to do one more, you know, at one point. Julio A.: I've heard it a few times over the years in interviews, he would love to end his career with a fight in Azteca Stadium. This fight is couldn't be further from Azteca. This fight's in Saudi Arabia. This f Julio Elder: I was gonna say, yeah. Julio A.: it's fight this fight's in Riyadh Stadium. So, you know, and it Well, it's climate controlled if you're talking about the desert. So it yeah, I mean. Julio Elder: But if it's a Riyadh Stadium, what does that mean? Yeah, but but talk about money. To to get to get to get a fight out there, hey, he's probably paying him more than Julio A.: Are you kidding me? Julio Elder: if he would have been fighting it anywhere in the United States and if he would have been champion. Julio A.: let's let's see what's the take for each Julio Elder: Mm. Julio A.: boxer. But if he wins to to this weekend, then it would for sure for sure enable him to have a rematch with either this guy or or go up right because and and and get the next champion and try to unify belt, I guess. If that's still how it works in boxing, but he can then request that that fight be, and that could be his last fight Julio Elder: that could be there. Julio A.: in so maybe he's just Holding out for one more fight, but I don't like when boxers hold out for a goal like that. Cause it never ends the it's never the storybook Derek Julio Elder: No. Julio A.: Jeter walk-off like ending. Julio Elder: No. Julio A.: you know what I mean? And it always it just looks sad. I don't think Anello's gonna look sad this weekend. He actually looks like he's in great shape. here we go. Julio Elder: He weighs w how old is he now? Thirty what? Julio A.: 36. But here Julio Elder: Thirty six. Julio A.: here's ready, you ready for this? Julio Elder: Mm-hmm. Julio A.: so Christian and Billy is gonna take home a career high payout between 3.8 and 8.9 million. Julio Elder: Phe Julio A.: Somewhere between there, Canelo is set to earn a guaranteed forty seven million. Julio Elder: What? Ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho that that that answers your question. That answers your question. Why? Julio A.: You g Julio Elder: No matter how much money you got, Julio, no matter how much money you got, how well you invest your money. So they offer you 47 million dollars. Yo, I'll fight in the I'll I'll fight in the polars, man. On the North Pole. I'll fight in the middle of, you know, an Amazon. Julio A.: You'll do a ring, you'll do a round, you'll do a round and then Julio Elder: Bro, for forty-seven, it's like this one guy said, Yo, for that amount of money, I'll hold my mother on the ring. Shit. Julio A.: Forty-seven million for essentially thirty-eight Julio Elder: Guaranteed. Julio A.: thirty-eight minutes guaranteed. For says it's a guaranteed forty-seven million dollar purse. Julio Elder: That was that's your answer, bro. Now now you know why he's coming back to fight. You can't say no to forty seven million dollars. Julio A.: Wow. And they're they're they're the they're calling it Mexico versus the World Card. That's the that's the that's And it's in Riyadh. And the dude's British. He's a he's a black Brit. He's good. I've seen some crit I've seen some highlights of this dude. His knockouts, 24 of 29 wins are by way of knockout. if he gets the Canelo in the early rounds, i that's that's his strength, it looks like. So he's gotta punch. He's gotta punch. Julio Elder: Boy, but f I'm still I'm still I'm still thinking about the forty seven million dollars. You I I didn't hear words you said, bro, because all I'm hearing, all I'm seeing is forty-seven million dollars, bro, to go fight. And he's the Julio A.: And he's the challenger. He's the Julio Elder: challenger. He reminds me of the old fights with este como se llama este loco. Julio A.: Camacho? Julio Elder: yeah, Macho Camacho. They they would pay Camacho more. Then the champion and they they once asked him that and Julio A.: Well he was the drawer, right? Julio Elder: he said 'cause I'm the one who brings him. I'm the macho man. They come to see macho time. Julio A.: It's true. Ain't nobody know coming to see Christian and Billy b in the desert to see nobody. no, so they brought Canelo at thirty six. They fucking they're dragging him out there for forty seven million. Julio Elder: Forty seven million dollars. You could drag dead people out for seven forty seven million dollars, bro. You could bring them out of the grave, forty-seven million dollars. No freaking way. Julio A.: Yeah, which is some s. Julio Elder: Forty seven million dollars, bro. Damn. Julio A.: Mm-hmm. I should've I should I buried my lead. I should have started with that. There wouldn't be a conversation as to why they Julio Elder: No, bro, I still can't get over that. Forty seven million dollars. I said, his negotiations, what the hell, what they offer this dude? Julio A.: Well, it's part of a multi fight deal with the Saudi government, Saudi interests. Julio Elder: Yeah, they they're spending a lot of that oil money, bro, to get some great sports stuff out there. And I don't know why. are people actually taking flights from here or around the world to go there? Because I know that it's all about this tourism thing that they're trying to develop. they're trying to g Julio A.: Sure, they fill it with a lot of locals, it's not a poor kingdom. Julio Elder: Yeah, Julio A.: they gotta they gotta show good f faith, right? Like, look, women are at boxing matches and you know, they're not gonna have any gay people out there, I don't imagine, anytime soon, but you know, they got you know, but Julio Elder: No. Julio A.: but but they're trying to show like they're ready to enter the world. And so sport is definitely one of the easiest ways. Julio Elder: Yes. On I mean they for what they're paying in soccer, what they're paying in basketball, what they're paying in there's gonna be there there's this commercial that I see. Julio A.: Listen. Are they paying YouTubers? Because I would I would like if the Saudi wants to throw 47 million at the No Good Sports Podcast. Yeah. Julio Elder: Yo, we we we volunteer. We we won we'll we'll do we'll do a live podcast from there. You don't have to pay you you don't have to pay us forty seven million. Anything that we pay, I'm sure, is more than whatever we're getting now. So we'll we'll go out there. But there's a commercial who Julio A.: Yeah. You wanna d listen, we'll we'll do a live cast. Julio Elder: there's a commercial here, Julio, after the games, about some basketball tournament that's being played over there, because it starts with a with a with with a with a hawk that's flying. And it says in Puerto and Puerto Rico is it's it's some international basketball tournament that's being held in Rija. Julio A.: yeah, FIBA. It's the FIBA Asian qualifiers are happening. It the twenty twenty seven FIBA Asian qualifiers are happening. And they have a home match against China at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah. Julio Elder: Yeah, this I see I kept but I said why why am I seeing Julio A.: Jada. Jada? Jada? Jada. Julio Elder: this commercial so much in Puerto Rico? It's gonna be in Riyadh, a basketball international basketball tournament that they've been advertising here a lot. I'm saying, whoa, but it's being advertised during the World Series Julio A.: Well, there you go. Julio Elder: games. Julio A.: See? They there there you go. Julio Elder: They're spending money. Julio A.: well they also have they they have a they they they gave the NBA enough money to create a brand new tournament. There's an in season tournament called the Emirates Cup. And that's what Julio Elder: That's I think Julio A.: the the Knicks won that last year and then won the actual title. But it happens it's a tournament that happens in Vegas in November in the middle Julio Elder: Wow. Julio A.: of the season. It's like soccer has multiple tournaments happening at once. You got your regular Julio Elder: Yeah. Julio A.: season, then you got Champions League, then you got the Euro League. Well, basketball's going in that direction, and now they've got they've got this tournament that was it's it's called the Emirates Julio Elder: And they got the money to burn to put it together. Julio A.: Cup. And and yeah, every player gets a bonus and you get a bonus for winning the cup. I think I don't know, 150 grand per player. I know remember that the starting five last year for the Knicks gave their winnings to their rookies. 'Cause everybody Julio Elder: Wow. Julio A.: every veteran has a rookie on the team that is like your, your rookie. You they carry your bags, they do all the shit for you. You're supposed to, treat them nice because they take care of them. Julio Elder: Take care of them. It's like like that's their tip. Julio A.: Exactly. And so I know that the Knicks donated the starters, donated their winnings, their bonus money from the tournament to their rookies. Julio Elder: That was nice. Decent. Julio A.: yeah, when you you you make it twenty five mil, hundred and fifty thousand, you ain't gonna miss you ain't gonna miss that. Sure. I give you my bonus money. That's that's a weekend and a beatha. Julio Elder: That's that's that's that's chunk chain. That's not even a weekend for some of these guys, bro. Julio A.: It's probably not even a weekend for some of these guys. You're not wrong. We had some great stuff going on today. Make sure you share, like, and subscribe. Much appreciated to those that are listening. Please share with your friends. Let them know. And comment below. Let us know what you like and what you don't like. You know, as we move closer to the offseason, we're not gonna have much baseball. it's still going to be top of mind for us. So if you're if you're here for baseball, Julio Elder: Yes. Julio A.: don't lose us just because the World Series is over. We're going to have some Mount Rushmores that we want to talk about. We have some debates on, you know, retiring Clemente's number that we wanted to get to. We obviously want to get to the offseason so we can start discussing labor negotiations and whether we're Julio Elder: Mm-hmm. Julio A.: going to have baseball in 2027. And if we don't, what does that mean for the sport in the long term when the sport's already dying? by the way, if you thought the sport was dying, Game one had a 12.3 million dollar million viewer average, which is the highest in Julio Elder: Which wasn't Julio A.: spend for two small market teams. Not bad. Not Julio Elder: Yes, not bad. Julio A.: bad. so if you're a baseball fan, you're enjoying this. If if you're a fan of the Knicks, if you're a fan of Julio Elder: The games are the games are exciting then, Julio A.: football, we will also start touching upon those as well. And we are going to get our soccer slash football insider Marcelino Ortiz in here. to give us a rundown on the world of football. So thank you very much and we will see you all next week. Julio Elder: God bless, stay safe.
