SPEAKER_00: Have you ever noticed that if you ask people what it means to be Catholic, most of the answers are going to be about what we believe.
• 0:07
SPEAKER_00: We believe in the Eucharist.
• 0:09
SPEAKER_00: We believe in the Pope.
• 0:10
SPEAKER_00: We believe in one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
• 0:13
SPEAKER_00: We believe in the saints, and of course we believe in the Blessed Mother.
• 0:16
SPEAKER_00: And all of those things are very true.
• 0:19
SPEAKER_00: But I wonder if we've forgotten how to answer a different question.
• 0:23
SPEAKER_00: What does Catholic life actually look like?
• 0:26
SPEAKER_00: Not just on Sunday mornings, but what does it look like on a random Saturday afternoon at a backyard barbecue or on vacation or around a campfire or when the kids are just running around outside?
• 0:38
SPEAKER_00: Because I don't think enough people have ever seen ordinary Catholic life and what that can actually look like.
• 0:45
SPEAKER_00: A few times now, some of our very good friends from the parish who are actually in our Connect group, Brad and Angela, they've invited us and a bunch of other people from our parish out to her uncle's property.
• 0:55
SPEAKER_00: It's one of those places that literally makes you feel like a kid again.
• 0:59
SPEAKER_00: There's this old grain silo that her uncle has transformed into a rock climbing wall.
• 1:05
SPEAKER_00: The kids absolutely love it, and so do the adults.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_00: And as soon as we get there, they disappear immediately.
• 1:12
SPEAKER_00: Some of them are climbing the wall, others are riding bikes, some of them are in golf carts, some are playing hide and seek, others are on four-wheelers and hoverboards, and everybody is laughing, running around, getting dirty, and not one of the kids is looking at a screen.
• 1:28
  SPEAKER_00: They're just being kids.
• 1:30
SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, the adults, well, they're catching up.
• 1:33
SPEAKER_00: People are, you know, getting their dishes that they brought together, get it all ready.
• 1:37
SPEAKER_00: And there are many people, of course, telling stories, laughing, hanging out, checking in on one another, seeing how everyone's doing.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_00: It's loud, it's very joyful, and it feels fully alive.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_00: And then something beautiful happens.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_00: Everything all of a sudden just slows down.
• 1:54
SPEAKER_00: A priest sets up an altar outside.
• 1:57
  SPEAKER_00: Yep, you guessed it.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_00: We're having an outdoor mass.
• 2:00
  SPEAKER_00: The conversations immediately stop.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: Then the kids gather around, usually right up front, and the same families that were just laughing together a few minutes ago now are gonna kneel together before Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.
• 2:13
  SPEAKER_00: Know what?
• 2:13
  SPEAKER_00: That's my favorite part.
• 2:15
SPEAKER_00: Because nobody has to become somebody different.
• 2:18
SPEAKER_00: We don't stop being joyful or being who we are because we're going to mass.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_00: We don't just stop being human because we're praying.
• 2:26
SPEAKER_00: We don't have to be weird either.
• 2:27
SPEAKER_00: We simply just place Jesus exactly where he belongs, at the center.
• 2:32
SPEAKER_00: And of course, after mass, the celebration continues.
• 2:35
SPEAKER_00: The food tastes better, conversations seem to get deeper, then the kids go right back to playing and being kids.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_00: The adults they sit around, we listen to music, share stories, enjoy a few drinks, and then together we sit there as the sun sets and we usually get a fire going.
• 2:53
SPEAKER_00: Nobody is trying to impress anybody, and nobody is pretending that they have it all together.
• 2:59
SPEAKER_00: It's just ordinary Catholic families trying to love God and love one another.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_00: And every time I leave, I find myself thinking the same exact thing.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_00: This is what I want my kids to remember.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_00: I hope they remember climbing that old silo.
• 3:14
SPEAKER_00: I hope they remember chasing their friends through the woods.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_00: I hope they remember the laughter around the table about taking time to put Jesus in the center.
• 3:23
SPEAKER_00: But more than anything, I hope that they remember that Jesus was always there.
• 3:28
SPEAKER_00: And not because somebody forced him into the day, because he naturally belonged there.
• 3:34
SPEAKER_00: And I think that's something that we've all lost.
• 3:37
SPEAKER_00: Somewhere along the way, many people started believing that following Jesus makes life smaller or more boring or not as fun.
• 3:45
SPEAKER_00: And that being Catholic, it means you always have to be serious, that you have to stop having fun, stop laughing, you know, stop celebrating, stop having a couple drinks and with your friends and then actually enjoying your life.
• 3:57
SPEAKER_00: It's almost as if holiness and happiness have somehow become enemies.
• 4:03
SPEAKER_00: But when I read the gospels, I don't see that.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_00: Jesus, he went to weddings, he made more wine so that they can share and enjoy each other's company as they danced.
• 4:13
SPEAKER_00: He shared meals with people, he walked with friends, he stayed at people's homes, he celebrated feasts, and of course he laughed, but he cried, but he entered into everyone's life that was just ordinary.
• 4:26
SPEAKER_00: But he found a way to transform it within.
• 4:30
SPEAKER_00: He didn't pull people out of that life and put them into a monastery.
• 4:34
SPEAKER_00: He entered right in the middle of where they were already living.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_00: And I think that's where we've accidentally trained ourselves to separate our faith from the rest of our lives.
• 4:44
SPEAKER_00: That Sunday is, you know, we pray over here, we go to mass, and that is how I'm Catholic just on Sundays.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_00: And then we have our real lives over there.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_00: But that's never been the Catholic vision.
• 4:55
SPEAKER_00: The Catholic vision is that grace perfects nature.
• 4:59
  SPEAKER_00: It doesn't replace it.
• 5:01
SPEAKER_00: God wants to, He wants to enter into our humanity.
• 5:05
SPEAKER_00: He doesn't want to erase our humanity.
• 5:07
SPEAKER_00: He wants to enter into our lives that we are already living and he wants to sanctify it.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_00: Whether that's your dinner table, whether that's friendships or your workplace or within your marriage or within your neighborhood, even on your vacations and on weekends and Saturdays, he wants all of it.
• 5:24
SPEAKER_00: And that's why I think authentic Catholic community is one of the greatest evangelization tools the church has ever had and will continue to have.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_00: People aren't looking for better arguments.
• 5:36
SPEAKER_00: They're looking for a better way to live.
• 5:39
SPEAKER_00: They're wondering if joyful marriages are something that even still exists.
• 5:43
SPEAKER_00: They're wondering if lifelong friendships are still something that they can be part of.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_00: And they wonder if children can still grow up surrounded by adults who genuinely care about them.
• 5:54
  SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
• 5:55
  SPEAKER_00: They're searching for belonging.
• 5:58
SPEAKER_00: And when they find a group of ordinary Catholic families who truly love one another, who laugh together, pray together, celebrate together, and keep Jesus at the center of their lives, something inside them says, I want that too.
• 6:11
SPEAKER_00: Not because somebody told them a great argument or some kind of apologetics, but because somebody showed them a beautiful way to live the faith.
• 6:19
SPEAKER_00: And that's what I hope people see when they spend time with our parish community.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_00: Not that we're perfect people, believe me, Katie and I are not, and our family is not.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_00: I want them to see people who are not pretending that they have it all together, that we're just ordinary families learning how to put Jesus at the center of ordinary life.
• 6:38
SPEAKER_00: And honestly, I think that's exactly what the early church looked like.
• 6:43
SPEAKER_00: On the next video, I want to share with you about why I think we've made Catholicism seem far more complicated than it needs to be, and why the future of the church may depend less on creating better Catholic content and more on creating better Catholic communities.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_00: Don't forget to share, like, and subscribe.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_00: Part two will come out next week.
• 7:02
  SPEAKER_00: Appreciate it.
• 7:02
SPEAKER_00: I'd love to hear from you.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_00: How are you living the Catholic life?
• 7:05
SPEAKER_00: God bless you and have a beautiful day.
