- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? We're just normal people.
- 0:13Oh, Blackwater, keep on rolling this sleeping moon.
- 0:15What? You keep on shining on me.
- 0:17See. Welcome.
- 0:19For the 300th time. Yeah.
- 0:20What's? Your least favorite Scary.
- 0:22Movie, The podcast where we talk about the good, the best, the
- 0:25ugly, and most of all, the absurd in all of our favorite.
- 0:28Family's favorite? Scary movies.
- 0:30Because we believe every horror movie rightfully has its fan
- 0:32base. Even if we don't always get it.
- 0:35My name's Travis. My name's Jesse.
- 0:36And welcome everybody to Big episode #300 on the show.
- 0:41It's a special day for us here. And, you know, we figured we
- 0:45would do it by covering a special movie.
- 0:48What up? What's happening?
- 0:49That's right. And it's the happening.
- 0:53I mean, yeah, like, how else can you celebrate #300 I can't think
- 0:56of a better way. So yeah, we're going to get into
- 0:59that here in a minute. But before we get into our
- 1:02normal coverage, do we have any announcements?
- 1:06Budget to your bubbies. Your bonus episode should be
- 1:09available for you on the Patreon right now.
- 1:12That we decided this actually kind of sort of from an argument
- 1:16we are having to leave it on or not of all things the long Walk,
- 1:21if that was a single location movie or not.
- 1:23And I said obviously not. We started going back and forth
- 1:25and we decided it's time for us to settle this debate once and
- 1:28for all. What is a single location movie?
- 1:31That is September's bonus episode on the Patreon right now
- 1:35for all of our budget tier bubbies.
- 1:37Or if you would like to pay $5 for the single episode, that is
- 1:40an option as well. I'm excited.
- 1:42I'm excited to finally get it, get the groundwork way down.
- 1:45I think this is going to be like the defining piece of work that
- 1:48will establish what a single location movie is for everybody.
- 1:52Yes, yeah, I'm pretty sure we'll be in textbook someday.
- 1:56It's going to be peer reviewed. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:58By you guys. Yeah, you're the peers.
- 2:01Yeah. All right, cool.
- 2:03So yeah, go check that out. I'm excited to do that.
- 2:05We haven't recorded it yet, so I don't know how that conversation
- 2:08goes. You know, we just felt like we'd
- 2:10be in the perfect headspace after talking about the
- 2:12happening. Yeah.
- 2:13You know, honestly, yeah, I think that that's the right call
- 2:15right there. Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:17All right. I don't have polls for last
- 2:19week's movie. I It's just it's a thing that
- 2:22unfortunately didn't happen. This time it was Travis's
- 2:26medical issues that threw us off.
- 2:28It was my turn. That's right.
- 2:30So Yep, I am. I'm dealing with shit.
- 2:32Yeah, not me in the ER without a voice.
- 2:35Yeah, this time. But it's OK.
- 2:37I'm, I'm, I'm here, I'm here talking so that that's enough
- 2:41for us to be able to keep trucking.
- 2:43I think so. Yeah, I think so too.
- 2:45I hope so at least. Without further ado, do we want
- 2:49to get into it? Yeah, OK, let's get into it.
- 2:52The Happening released June 13th, 2008.
- 2:56We watched it on our DVD and if you want to stream it anywhere,
- 3:01you have one option and that option is YouTube TV.
- 3:04If you don't have YouTube TV then you best be written on
- 3:07Amazon or on YouTube. Yeah, there you go.
- 3:10Yeah, you're paying YouTube something either way.
- 3:12Or you can do what we did. We went to Half Price Books and
- 3:14found a DVD for like 3 bucks. Yeah, it was really cheap and.
- 3:18It was meant to be. The only thing, the only
- 3:21difference is you have to enter the judgement of the person at
- 3:26the checkout counter, which we had to do when we bought the
- 3:28DVD. Yeah, he was like, oh God, not
- 3:30this movie. And then we started talking
- 3:32about how much we love M Night Shyamalan, and I think we
- 3:35accidentally made him feel bad, which isn't what we were trying
- 3:37to do. We were just.
- 3:38He like he worked himself into his own M Night rant actually,
- 3:41because we are not even really giving him enough to go on.
- 3:44And he's like, you know what? But it's also bullshit that he
- 3:45feels like he has to do a twist. I'm like, man, this has been
- 3:49like, I didn't realize the purchase of the Happening was
- 3:51gonna bring this out of a man, but it did.
- 3:53Apparently I just have to assume that he tries to talk about it
- 3:56with his coworkers and everybody's like, we're not
- 3:59talking about this with you yet. Yeah, nobody knows who M Night
- 4:01Shyamalan is, man. Everybody knows who M Night
- 4:04Shyamalan is. They should.
- 4:05They should. So, Speaking of the man himself
- 4:09in my shaman wrote and directed this movie.
- 4:11And produced And produced. It was in big letters during the
- 4:14opening crisis. Yeah, he likes to make it known
- 4:16that he makes shit himself. Yeah, he didn't 100% bankroll
- 4:20this movie himself, by the way. I think half of it was a
- 4:23bankrolled by an Indian producer.
- 4:27I don't know, it's like some kind of Indian like India based
- 4:30production company stepped in and like footed half the bill
- 4:32for him. Music is by James Newton Howard
- 4:35and special effects makeup by Steve Crimmin.
- 4:37Both of those people are repeat collaborators.
- 4:41OK, cool. Yeah, starring Marky Mark as
- 4:45Elliott. And the Funky Bunch as everyone
- 4:48else. That's right.
- 4:49Yep, that that's to the rest of the cast.
- 4:52I honestly would not have been mad if that's how like the
- 4:55credits roll and it's like and the Funky Bunch, it's just like
- 4:57everybody's name. That's all that plays cuz it's
- 5:00the plants vibrations. That and the money song that you
- 5:03were telling me about. Yeah.
- 5:05Zooey Deschanel. Zooey Deschanel is Alma John
- 5:08Leguizamo. Come on man.
- 5:11See, I always have trouble with this, so in my notes, before I
- 5:15knew his character's name, I just wrote him as John Luigi.
- 5:18Because he also plays Luigi. Yeah, most notably.
- 5:22That is, yes, that is his most well known.
- 5:24Role. I know for a lot of people that
- 5:25he is a big actor and a lot of people have like roles that they
- 5:30would attribute him to, but he's just always Luigi to me.
- 5:33I will say shout out to Chad that when I said John Leguizamo
- 5:38couldn't have a bad performance if he had a gun to his head, he
- 5:42was like, man, I still need to see Mario World that was like
- 5:44his. Oh.
- 5:46His first reaction? I said Mario, Well, listen,
- 5:48Mario Brothers. Yeah, I got we.
- 5:50Know, yeah. Boy, that's a.
- 5:53That's a So yeah, I guess for you and Chad it John Leguizamo,
- 5:58Luigi. Ashlyn Sanchez as Jess, Betty
- 6:02Buckley as Misses Jones, Spencer Breslin as Josh and Robert
- 6:07Bailey Junior as Jared. OK, Jesse, time for our favorite
- 6:11game on the show. Budget.
- 6:13All budgeted. Listen, Shamwan works with big
- 6:19bankrolls. How does stacks on stacks on
- 6:21stacks? Yeah, go ahead.
- 6:24Yeah, that's a budget. Yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 6:26It is budget. It's a, it's a pretty big
- 6:28budget. It's $48 million.
- 6:29All right. Where does this man have this
- 6:31money? Did he just like have that one
- 6:33successful movie and just kept like putting it into each movie?
- 6:37I think there's that and I also think just like watching the
- 6:40behind the scenes and reading interviews and stuff with him, I
- 6:43think he's just got like, he just endears himself to people.
- 6:48You know, he's nice. I was watching the special
- 6:51features on the Happening and the weird thing about that is
- 6:55they only. It seems as though they only
- 6:58decided to do like the special features footage for one day of
- 7:01shooting every. Everything was at that house.
- 7:04Every feature was at the house where the kids get shot.
- 7:07And it's like, why did you guys only do it on this one day?
- 7:10Like this movie went so many other places and like it's just
- 7:14I want to know the making of the whole movie, not this one scene,
- 7:16but like it all kept coming back to that one scene for some weird
- 7:19reason. It was also really funny when he
- 7:21was introducing the extended scenes and deleted scenes and
- 7:24he'd be like, so we just, there was a lot more to this line
- 7:28attack or to this shooting than what we actually showed on
- 7:31screen. It's like 2 extra seconds for
- 7:33each one. And I like that he was like,
- 7:35that's the line that I I couldn't cross for general
- 7:38audiences. He's a.
- 7:40He's sensitive. I've got theories about this
- 7:42that I'll go into later, but we. Have explanations?
- 7:45Yeah, I have explanations. Yeah, we'll get into it.
- 7:49OK. Opening box office for the movie
- 7:51was $30 million, Worldwide gross $163 million.
- 7:57That's the that's the pool of Shyamalan, man.
- 7:59That's why he keeps getting money.
- 8:01And here's the other aspect of Shyamalan when it comes to the
- 8:04rating, it's a 5 even on IMDb. So this movie is it's people are
- 8:095050. Love him or you hate him.
- 8:11I mean, it's true. He's probably one of the more
- 8:13polarizing directors I've seen out there.
- 8:16Like people either just really strongly hate his work or they
- 8:20just, like, really love it. So I have three other movies
- 8:23from 2008 to draw comparisons to, and I do.
- 8:27We do have a theme that fits all together here. 2008. 2008 in
- 8:322008, yes it is. Nature fights bet.
- 8:36Wow, OK, we were all worried about.
- 8:38That then, yeah, surprisingly, 4 movies had that kind of theme
- 8:41going on here. So movie number one, the first
- 8:44two we have covered and obviously this is The Ruins.
- 8:49Yeah. Yeah, that's a fun movie.
- 8:51You know, a bunch of flowers and vines and shit like that
- 8:53attacking. It's a good time.
- 8:55That movie released April 4th, 2008 with an $8 million budget
- 9:00and a $22 million gross. Go listen to us talk about it.
- 9:04Yeah, it was one of the more recent episodes.
- 9:05It was a good one too. I like that one.
- 9:07It's a 5.9 out of 10 on IMDb rating there.
- 9:11A little rude. I think that is a rude.
- 9:13Yeah, like it's, it's a really good movie if you ask me.
- 9:17All right, movie #2 liberties here, but it's a short, but I
- 9:22still think it counts. Is it revenge?
- 9:24It's revenge, yeah. Christmas tree goes and attacks
- 9:27people because they're just being killed and murdered just
- 9:30for one like season, like just one day of celebration and they
- 9:33just get casted out. Yeah, it is macabre if you think
- 9:36about it from the tree's perspective.
- 9:38They had a reason to fight back, just like the plants in The
- 9:40Happening. They're like, this is a warning,
- 9:42motherfuckers, don't do this shit.
- 9:44If you do want to hear our coverage of that, that is one of
- 9:46our Patreon episodes. So and that released July 7th.
- 9:49It's 2008. Do not have any financial
- 9:52information, but it is the strongest rating out of all of
- 9:55them here. It's a 7.3.
- 9:58I like it. Yeah, I like that guy's style.
- 10:01And obviously, I'm a sucker for the Trailer Park Boys.
- 10:05Connections. Here you get J Rock.
- 10:07J Rock, baby. He's in it.
- 10:09A final movie Splinter. It's not one that I've seen
- 10:13before, but I did read the synopsis because I read the
- 10:16title. I was like, that sounds like
- 10:18nature could be involved, and I was right.
- 10:20My brain just immediately went to splinter cells, so OK.
- 10:24Yeah, it's not a spy or like a whatever thriller.
- 10:28It's. Yeah, I assume not.
- 10:29No, it's it involves fungi. Gross.
- 10:32Yeah, it doesn't sound like a fun time.
- 10:37It released October 31st, 2008. No budget worldwide Gross
- 10:43522,006.1 IMDb score. OK, now I've got tag lines.
- 10:48Tag lines. This first one is probably one
- 10:53of the best tag lines. So yeah, it's just, I love what
- 10:56they did with it. So we've sensed it, we've seen
- 11:01the signs. Now it's happening.
- 11:05We couldn't have come up with anything I.
- 11:07Know that feels like one that was made from our show right
- 11:10there. Yeah.
- 11:10And that's so fucking good. Oh my God.
- 11:14I love that I get left out of his flat movie too.
- 11:18I OK, sorry, I'm going to write down my pitch to go along with
- 11:22that for the end. OK, I won't look.
- 11:25I want that to be a surprise. I love that though, that it's
- 11:28just so good throwing in all of his his big movies.
- 11:32It's really well done. We got one other tagline, the
- 11:35event we could not foresee on a scale we cannot imagine.
- 11:39It gets the story across a little bit better, but go with
- 11:43the first one. The first one.
- 11:45I like that. So that's it for taglines.
- 11:47Let's go on into our fun facts. OK.
- 11:50All right. So, OK.
- 11:53So one of the things that I always see people talk about
- 11:56whenever they discuss this movie is the intention behind it
- 12:00whenever it was being made. So I know that generally when
- 12:04you have a conversation about it, people say he was trying to
- 12:07make AB movie on purpose, which to be true.
- 12:12He does say that. He said that in the special
- 12:14features too, he wanted to do a throwback B movie.
- 12:17So he was looking at something kind of similar to like the
- 12:20Birds, you know, like natural disasters, paranoia type movies
- 12:23from like the 60s and the 70s. So that's where it all
- 12:26originated. However, he said as he was
- 12:29writing it, it ended up slipping into something deeper.
- 12:33So he, I think, abandoned the B movie aspect of it and ended up
- 12:39trying to make something a little bit more Shamalan ask
- 12:42where it was like more deep meaning and you know.
- 12:45But it still had a very corny dialogue.
- 12:48It did, but I think there's a reason, OK, like he had to
- 12:53completely rewrite the script. OK, so one of the things is he
- 12:57had the original screenplay, it was called or the treatment was
- 13:01called the green effect. Thing is, he had a really tough
- 13:04time getting this thing bought by studios because the movie
- 13:08that he had just made, The Woman in Black, bombed and nobody was
- 13:13really interested in getting his shit after that.
- 13:15So he ended up just taking that script, rewriting it, and then
- 13:20that's what ended up becoming the Happening in the original
- 13:24version of this, by the way, we never find out what is
- 13:26happening. OK, but he was just wanting to
- 13:30still get like the impression of like it's nature being pissed
- 13:33off at you. Like the message is still there,
- 13:35it's just we never get an explanation.
- 13:37This is his very first R rated movie.
- 13:39OK. And that I think is part of what
- 13:44we were getting with the special features there where he's like,
- 13:46it's just like, it was too hard for me to do because like, I
- 13:49feel like this man, it's not in his nature to do R rated.
- 13:53Yeah. And he was saying some of the
- 13:55stuff that we were seeing in the special features was unrated
- 13:59tier stuff, which I really like, or like NC 17 rated tier stuff.
- 14:05I don't really think it was that bad.
- 14:06We had some deleted scenes, yeah.
- 14:09Or some extended scenes even have extra carnage.
- 14:12A lot more of the back of Jared's head.
- 14:14We seem like we see Jared actually get shot so that part
- 14:18isn't taken away. We see extended footage of the
- 14:22lion attack scene like Jesse was talking about.
- 14:24And when they're in the diner, there's another scene where they
- 14:27had like a recital going on where a bunch of people ended up
- 14:32just killing themselves during a piano or violin recital.
- 14:35That one I'm glad got cut because I would have had so many
- 14:38more questions if it was in the final cut of the film cuz it.
- 14:42Introduced some things that was. Weird, yes?
- 14:44We saw people just passing out, following over and.
- 14:48And then the the one guy killed himself by swallowing his cello
- 14:52bow. And I don't know it like I don't
- 14:54know how that works. Yeah, I, I had like, I saw that
- 14:59happening. I was like, that's not the
- 15:00direction that I thought he was going to take it and just slide
- 15:02it across his neck, you know, like his neck was the instrument
- 15:06instead. Yeah, we're like, I don't know,
- 15:08make a garage out of one of his cello strings, something.
- 15:13I don't know. I'm just, I'm glad that one was
- 15:15cut. Just more for me.
- 15:17I'm glad it was cut because it asked it.
- 15:20Made me ask me questions. Yeah, I agree.
- 15:22And he said it was his favorite part of the script and he was
- 15:26really sad to see that one go. But he said it was too gruesome,
- 15:29which it really wasn't. But I.
- 15:31Also, like, I really love stuff like this.
- 15:34Whenever writers are asked how they came up with an idea and I
- 15:37was just like, I don't know, man, just living life like,
- 15:40here's this completely normal thing I was doing because that's
- 15:42he's like, was that a friend's piano recital like.
- 15:45That was his daughter's. His daughter's piano recital.
- 15:47Which I think is kind of funny because like that's kind of
- 15:50building up to the whole thing with Trap, with her being like a
- 15:51performer and stuff too. Not that brutal, but he wanted
- 15:55it to be pretty brutal movie I think.
- 15:57It's dark because it's like a kids recital.
- 15:59Yeah, well, see, The thing is, the guy that got up, he was more
- 16:02of an adult too, which I thought was strange, but then again, an
- 16:04adult's wasn't. He I assume so.
- 16:07I was gonna say he had facial hair, but teens couldn't have
- 16:09facial hair. Yeah.
- 16:10It just it's like like a Fry situation with his holophoner
- 16:13lessons, like he's just the adult that wanted to learn.
- 16:16That well, that's what I'm saying too and you know there's
- 16:18something wrong with that Adults seem to have help sometimes
- 16:21learning stuff too. You know the movie was shot in
- 16:24continuity. So like I guess like
- 16:26chronological continuity. He did that to try and keep the
- 16:30actors immersed in everything that was happening.
- 16:35Speaking of like a the rewrite, by the way, he he wrote Elliott
- 16:41for Mark Wahlberg specifically. And yeah, like apparently him
- 16:45and Mark Wahlberg are friends. And this is some of the funniest
- 16:49shit that I had heard because he was talking, there were two
- 16:52separate talking heads of this in the behind the scenes thing.
- 16:55And he originally had Elliot being like this type of
- 16:58character. But the more he started writing
- 17:00the character, the more he was writing it as he saw Mark
- 17:05Wahlberg in Night Shyamalan sees Mark Wahlberg as this innocent
- 17:10go lucky kid. Basically, Elliot is how Mark
- 17:16Wahlberg is perceived by M Knight Shaman.
- 17:18He says so himself in there and then it cut immediately to Mark
- 17:21Wahlberg. He's like, yeah, I don't know
- 17:23why, but M Knight thinks I'm some kind of like innocent guy
- 17:26or something. He admitted himself that he is a
- 17:29piece of shit and he is not innocent.
- 17:31He's like, yeah, I really don't understand why he he got this
- 17:34impression of me, which I think is why whenever we see in the
- 17:39behind the scenes thing, we get so many like bits of Mark
- 17:43Wahlberg questioning his characters moments.
- 17:47The best, the best for us when he was like, why are we going to
- 17:51this abandoned house if we're looking for food?
- 17:53M Night laughs for 45 seconds and then he goes 2 words.
- 17:58Canned goods. Yeah, And, like, I mean, that's
- 18:00a good answer. But there was also a thing, too,
- 18:03where that scene where that kid gets shot with a shotgun and he
- 18:07goes over there and tries to grab the shotgun.
- 18:09He was doing it for a bit and he's like, so do I keep
- 18:12jiggling? Because I feel like it's kind of
- 18:14silly if I'm doing this for a little while, you know what I
- 18:16mean? He's like, he kept questioning
- 18:17everything. And I think it was because he
- 18:20was like, does he really think I'm like this?
- 18:22Is this who he perceives me to be?
- 18:23Like the guy that goes over there and Jingle stuff.
- 18:26Is Mark Wahlberg M Night's best friend?
- 18:28But M Night isn't Mark's best friend.
- 18:30It seems to be the case. No, I feel like M Night deserves
- 18:34better than that. I think M Night has a
- 18:35surprisingly optimistic look on the world for all of the horror
- 18:38movies he makes. I also have my own theory that
- 18:42could be the case, is that he secretly hates Mark Wahlberg and
- 18:45he wanted the world perceived. Yeah, he wanted to.
- 18:49Like, he wanted to give him the like weirdest fucking character,
- 18:52give him the weirdest fucking lines and like creative
- 18:54decisions and like make him look bad publicly.
- 18:59I will explain my theory in a little bit.
- 19:01I've got additional thoughts behind it though.
- 19:04And then the final thing is we did get a deleted scene.
- 19:08It was the very first one that we saw and we got a big lengthy
- 19:12explanation about it from M Night and it was before the
- 19:15movie. The original opening scene was
- 19:17going to be Elliot and Alma having their big fight that is
- 19:23referenced throughout the movie and ended up it.
- 19:27It was about them just like kind of going over the problems that
- 19:30gets brought up eventually. Like him not being grown up
- 19:33enough for her and she's wanting to feel protected and she didn't
- 19:36feel like he was the right person on their wedding day.
- 19:40It's a pretty heavy opening, but he cut it because he realized
- 19:46that they cover all of this eventually.
- 19:48It gets like brought up organically throughout the
- 19:50movie. It doesn't it doesn't it
- 19:52doesn't. Like some of these things do
- 19:53come up. And like after watching the
- 19:55scene, I was like, oh, that explains this because like, yes,
- 19:58when we're in the like at the end of the movie, the bunker and
- 20:02he's like, I got to do this if I want to protect you.
- 20:04I'm like, that was a weird thing to say.
- 20:06And then like we brought back to the opening and she's like, if
- 20:09something big ever happened in our lives, I don't know if you.
- 20:12I would be the kind of guy that would be able to step up and
- 20:14protect me. It also we didn't have context
- 20:18for their marital problems, we just knew they had marital
- 20:19problems which that's fine like. Yeah, you know, it's.
- 20:22Human thing, yeah, but also his obsession with this goddamn mood
- 20:25ring and how sentimental and important it was to him.
- 20:29And up until we watched this deleted scene I assumed it was
- 20:32the fucking mood ring that he gifted her on their first date
- 20:34and at some point stole back I guess.
- 20:38But it wasn't. He got it from his Honey Bunches
- 20:40of votes that morning in the cereal.
- 20:43The best part about that too, is throughout the entire scene,
- 20:46even after she leaves, she's just holding the cereal, but
- 20:48he's like watching it to his chest.
- 20:50I feel like that would be you if we had a fight like this.
- 20:52I thought about it too. I was like damn that guy loves
- 20:55the cereal almost as much as I did.
- 20:58I thought it was like a it was cool and he ended up saying he
- 21:01caught it because he felt like it was too much and also it
- 21:04would have ended up being better as like ended up being more like
- 21:08back story for the characters more than anything.
- 21:10And at least since it was the first thing they shot, it gave
- 21:13them what they were working off of for the rest of the movie.
- 21:17Yeah. So, yeah, it's pretty
- 21:19interesting. And that's all the stuff that I
- 21:22have for the fun facts. OK, so let's get on into our
- 21:25discussion here. Good, bad, ugly and upstairs,
- 21:27Jesse. Well, good.
- 21:28I think that this is, it's an interesting story.
- 21:34You know, there were a lot of like natural disaster movies
- 21:36around this time. How many science classes did we
- 21:38sit in where we had to watch The Day After Tomorrow?
- 21:40We watched a couple like that. Yeah, I watched Dante's Inferno.
- 21:44Dante's Inferno. Like there there are.
- 21:47This is an interesting version. Dante's Peak.
- 21:51Dante's Peak, I was going. To say Dante's Inferno is
- 21:53something else. Yeah, actually that would have
- 21:55made sense though, because my science teacher was like a
- 21:57pastor, so he also did involve the teachings of God and his
- 22:00science teacher I. Didn't question it.
- 22:02It was just Dante's great, yeah. Sorry, go ahead.
- 22:07Well it makes sense because Dante's Peak is a volcano.
- 22:10So you say inferno lava it? Makes sense, I know.
- 22:13Yeah. Yeah, so I think that this is an
- 22:15interesting entry into like the natural disaster, you know, in
- 22:18terms of like a horror movie version of that.
- 22:20So I think that's pretty good. I'm always going to give points
- 22:23for John Leguizamo, literally always.
- 22:26I can't think of good. I can only think of the Mario
- 22:29movie and the menu and then this movie.
- 22:32Where else is? Oh my God, he isn't that, isn't
- 22:35he? Yeah, he's in a ton of shit.
- 22:37He's just, he's just one of those guys that kind of sneaks
- 22:39up on me, I guess. He's everywhere.
- 22:41Yeah, he's everywhere. But he is always ready to sneak
- 22:44up on you. But yeah, I think like this is
- 22:47an interesting group of characters in terms of like
- 22:50actors to bring together. I think that there was a lot of
- 22:56interesting ways to do deaths in this movie.
- 22:58And like those opening, like, montages of people just dying,
- 23:04Yeah, like, those are pretty intense, especially like that
- 23:06the construction scene. Yeah, that one really like
- 23:10because like that's something that you mean it's plausible on
- 23:13a normal day of work. But then the fact that it starts
- 23:16happening in waves is even more. It just becomes unsettling at
- 23:19that point. And also I like the plant
- 23:22people, plant couple. The plant couple, I am surprised
- 23:26that they died. I wanted more of them.
- 23:28They didn't even get names. They didn't.
- 23:30I even checked the IMDb like I just the plants were pissed off
- 23:34at people, including the people that understood them.
- 23:37That were being so kind to them. Yeah, like, maybe, like I think
- 23:40it would have been cool to have a scene of like the entire wave
- 23:43of people that they were with died, but they are the only two
- 23:45standing in the crowd. Maybe it was just like the guilt
- 23:48by association. Yeah, maybe.
- 23:51I don't know. So yeah.
- 23:53Yeah, and I understand that he had to have Marky Mark
- 23:59protecting multiple children for his, like, arc of growth that we
- 24:05didn't know was the whole thing. Yeah.
- 24:07Yeah. So I get why we split them up,
- 24:10but I just was still sad. OK.
- 24:13What? What's your goods?
- 24:15OK, yeah, I agree. Like the the whole idea of the
- 24:19movie itself is pretty scary. Just having people just have
- 24:23like, mass suicide and waves and yeah, like that opening scene,
- 24:28it really is effective. I'll give him credit for that.
- 24:31Like those moments where everybody's just watching the
- 24:34new, like, it honestly, like reminded me a lot of after 911,
- 24:41like just the news on all the time, school getting getting
- 24:44cancelled. Yeah.
- 24:45Like things are just and everybody's just terrified and
- 24:47everything was making everybody paranoid that something else was
- 24:49happening. Yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 24:51Because I mean, I guess it was kind of because they keep
- 24:53calling it a terrorist attack. So I mean, yeah, that's pretty
- 24:56fresh for 2008. Yeah.
- 25:00And so basically from this point on, all of the things that are
- 25:04good for me are also in the bad category because this movie
- 25:08lands firmly in the so bad, it's good genre for me.
- 25:12I agree. So I will add one more thing for
- 25:16the the good in my good comment or good area here.
- 25:22But whenever we get to the bad, I'm still probably going to be,
- 25:24like, speaking about it positively, but it's comedic.
- 25:28Again, Shyamalan proves that he has like, you know, comedy
- 25:31skills with his writing. Absolutely.
- 25:33The part that really gets me the most is that scene with Elliot
- 25:37talking to the classic plant, which I love that I saw online.
- 25:42Some people were shitting on that.
- 25:43It's like a terrible, like, dumb moment.
- 25:45I'm like, that was funny. Like that was a good moment.
- 25:48Yes, and that's the thing. I think we we had this
- 25:52breakthrough earlier this year where we're like, Oh my God,
- 25:55Shyamalan is actually a really funny guy and watching this with
- 25:59that new understanding of him, I appreciated so many more things
- 26:04about this movie. I did too.
- 26:05Yeah. Like you can actually see the
- 26:07comedy, like, not everything. Just because he writes like
- 26:09these scary, you know, spooky movies doesn't mean that he
- 26:12can't inject a little bit of comedy in here every now and.
- 26:15Then work too. He is Oh my God, work humor.
- 26:18That was the thing in the behind the scenes scenes, the way he
- 26:20was like talking to his crew and everything.
- 26:23He is a fucking dork. And it's.
- 26:25It's endearing though. Endearing honestly.
- 26:27Like he would be a fun guy to work for I think.
- 26:30Like just from everything I saw. Absolutely.
- 26:33He's a nice guy, absolutely. OK, so let's go.
- 26:37Let's go over to the bad stuff then.
- 26:39I mean, kind of a little bit what I was talking about before,
- 26:42like there, the editing is confusing to me seeing these
- 26:48like extra scenes, like, so I'm like, OK, well, this actually
- 26:52added a lot more context for what they were going through.
- 26:56So it would have been nice to see that.
- 26:57And it would have been nice to see the origin of that
- 26:59particular mood ring because as it was, I was all fucked up
- 27:02watching. I I was overly fixated on this
- 27:05mood ring for most of the movie. You were and I.
- 27:07It was one of those things I kept forgetting about, but you
- 27:09were. You could come bored about the
- 27:11mood ring. Because it kept coming up and I
- 27:13was like, why is this so important?
- 27:15And yeah, so that. But then, you know, we had the
- 27:19recital which would have introduced more questions.
- 27:23So some of the editing, I'm like, I feel like we could have
- 27:25done a little bit here, a little less there.
- 27:28I. Wonder if it's like a mishmash
- 27:29of his like previous script and his like rewrite it.
- 27:33Maybe. You know, like maybe he just
- 27:34didn't like clean it up enough and you know, I think that would
- 27:38explain some of the things cuz we do get some inconsistencies
- 27:41with some stuff. And I also with this he's too
- 27:45Mark Wahlberg is too marky Mark for me cuz he's doing he's very
- 27:48much the hello, tell your mother I said hi.
- 27:51Yeah, he is like he is doing that, which if you guys haven't
- 27:55watched. SNL.
- 27:56SNL it's Andy Samberg. Andy Samberg.
- 27:59Andy Samberg being doing. Mark Wahlberg saying hello to
- 28:02farm animals. You need to look at a.
- 28:04I'm gonna note to self editing chess you put in put that clip
- 28:08in the show notes, Yeah. He's so dead on.
- 28:10Like honestly, that's one of those things where like I've
- 28:13seen him in movies, but I never got that Marky mark until I
- 28:16watched this movie. It's like I get it.
- 28:18It's. Like we obviously had to follow
- 28:21this up with the other guys and it's a complete, it's completely
- 28:25different. I mean, he's a cop, he's a cop
- 28:28and he's, you know, a a rough character, but he's not doing
- 28:32that like same almost upspeak thing.
- 28:35Yeah, it's yeah, that was kind of distracting to me.
- 28:41I think everything else that I have that could be bad follows
- 28:44more in the absurd category because of the so bad it's good
- 28:48nature of this would be that's fair.
- 28:49So. All right, Well, I'll just
- 28:52expand on what you were talking about before.
- 28:53But the first thing I wrote is Marky Mark stinks.
- 28:56Like, he is just not a good actor in this movie.
- 29:00And it blew my mind because I've seen him act well in movies
- 29:05before, You know, like, I just don't understand what it is.
- 29:08But every single line that he has, he ends with, like, a
- 29:13question mark, You know, like, he always talks like this.
- 29:17Yeah. And it's just like, I don't
- 29:19understand that choice. But then I watched the behind
- 29:23the scenes thing and I'm like, this is the guy that like, am I
- 29:26envisioned? This is what he wanted?
- 29:28This is who he sees Mark Wahlberg to be and it's so weird
- 29:34how he got that impression of this.
- 29:35Man, I'm picturing at night Shawn on having his own separate
- 29:40talking head and it's like Michael Scott when he gets Oscar
- 29:43the little Cornballs he. Thinks so little of me he
- 29:47actually believed it, honestly. I mean, it could be, it could
- 29:52be, but like, I also can't see M Night Shyamalan being that much
- 29:56of a Dick to somebody to like, yeah, completely try and take
- 29:59their career and his own career at the same time by like,
- 30:02putting out an intentionally bad movie.
- 30:03Yeah. And that was like, that was a
- 30:07funny thing. You were reading the quote
- 30:09opening like before we even started recording.
- 30:11But he's like, he, he regretted doing this movie.
- 30:13But he's like, at least I got to play a teacher instead of a cop
- 30:17or a bad guy. You know, like, which did most
- 30:20of those other movies that you were talking about and the ones
- 30:22that I've seen, he's been the cop or a bad guy.
- 30:25His actual real life problematic yeah X so just giving a blanket
- 30:31bullshit acknowledged as far as that goes.
- 30:34Exactly. So to go on with this, the
- 30:37dialogue is super fucking corny. Like all of it.
- 30:40It's. Soapy though.
- 30:42I'm. OK with it because it's.
- 30:44And it's also really like soapy delivery with everything, too.
- 30:48Even Zoe Deschanel. Yeah, like she she's not.
- 30:51She's not absolved from any of this either.
- 30:53With her performance. She is just as bad as he is.
- 30:56God damn. Also watching this after New
- 31:00Girl has been a thing and wanting to write Jess for Zooey
- 31:05Deschanel's character because that's her character and New
- 31:07Girl. So I'm very scared writing
- 31:11reading through these later that I'm going to have Alma and Jess
- 31:13mixed up just because Zooey Deschanel is so iconically Jess.
- 31:18You know, there's a weird thing that I noticed with this movie.
- 31:21All of like, the side characters, especially the kids,
- 31:24all have names, starting with Jay.
- 31:26Yeah. Jess.
- 31:28Jared. Fuck.
- 31:30What was the other kid saying? Josh.
- 31:32Josh. Yeah.
- 31:34And Julian. John Leguizamo misses Jones.
- 31:40You know, it's just like he he's like, fuck the rest of the
- 31:43alphabet. Today.
- 31:43I'm doing J's with this script. Yeah, it's like a maybe he
- 31:48really liked 18 Kids and Counting, 19 kids, whatever.
- 31:52The Duggars, they were all J's. Were they?
- 31:55Yeah. That's so Oh yeah it oh, it gets
- 31:57fucking bizarre. Just go look up the Duggar
- 31:59names. And we kind of already touched
- 32:02based on a lot of this with your last part, but like there's just
- 32:05some inconsistencies with me. I think a lot of it like we
- 32:09never really figured out what exactly is happening.
- 32:11We kind of do, but we don't but like.
- 32:14The trees. It keeps changes like OK, it's
- 32:16only killing large groups. OK, small groups is totally
- 32:19fine. Oh, now it's doing small groups
- 32:20and it's just it doesn't it keeps changing, which I guess
- 32:24that, you know, could be the case for like what was actually
- 32:27happening here. Like it was like, you know, real
- 32:29life reactions from the plants, I guess, but.
- 32:32Also, I kind of, I hate to have to keep referencing real life
- 32:35here, but we saw that happen with COVID where like we had
- 32:37changing like guidelines because we're like, oh, we should be
- 32:40safe in these circumstances. Oops, new science says we're not
- 32:44safe in these circumstances. Yeah, but we were also just
- 32:47seeing him being demonstrated differently too, like it was
- 32:50sparing small groups. Yeah, 2nd and then this like all
- 32:54of a sudden it's like, but I'm going to sing about one person
- 32:56now, you know, it was, I don't know, they just.
- 33:01Said that's how science is though, man.
- 33:03It's easier to disprove a theory than it is to prove it.
- 33:06I guess that's true. I suppose that's true.
- 33:08OK, let's go. Too ugly then.
- 33:11OK, we're the bees are still fucking dying this 2025.
- 33:16This came out in 2008. Marky Mark is talking about the
- 33:19dead bees, and we're still having this issue.
- 33:22We learned nothing from any of these natural disaster movies
- 33:25that have we've seen over and over again.
- 33:27Plus Dante's Inferno. I just feel like that has to be
- 33:30included. Yes.
- 33:31Where? Where do we go?
- 33:32That's where we're going. Having Earth.
- 33:33Yeah. It's all heading to Dante's
- 33:35Inferno. That's the end game right there
- 33:37if we keep this trajectory. OK, yeah.
- 33:40So I'm gonna say that's like, this is the well, also the
- 33:45people that seemingly weren't affected by the plants that just
- 33:48shot children. That's pretty rough.
- 33:51Wait, what? Jared and Josh got shot by those
- 33:55people in that house. Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 33:58Yeah. I thought you're talking about
- 33:59like, they were just out in the open and they were picking up
- 34:01guns and like, you know, murdering people and stuff.
- 34:04No. OK.
- 34:05Yeah, well, I guess another thing is like, going back to the
- 34:09inconsistencies. I'm sorry, but like, you know
- 34:11how this movie starts out and then also ends like in the park?
- 34:15Like a whole wave of people get affected, but there's one person
- 34:18that is still normal and it's just witnessing everything
- 34:21happened. Why?
- 34:23I wish. I wish in each of those cases
- 34:25they had been like sneezing or something and like so they
- 34:28weren't breathing in the air's vest.
- 34:30Oh, that could've. You were wearing a face mask,
- 34:32you know, like. I mean, I wish we had something
- 34:34like that because I kept saying when they were walking through
- 34:37the field, I'm like, cover your faces like something.
- 34:40Yeah, it has to enter your system somehow.
- 34:43I assume it's not just the breeze touching your arm.
- 34:45And that's another inconsistent thing too about this house,
- 34:47because it was boarded up, but it was like there were slacks in
- 34:50the windows. Yeah.
- 34:52And like air is getting in there.
- 34:53Yeah. And we saw the whole like
- 34:54Terran, like the. The Jeep?
- 34:56Yeah, be. Like a big issue.
- 34:59OK, well, my uglies. First of all, obviously the
- 35:03suicides. Yeah, I mean, that's like a big
- 35:06thing here in this movie you see in droves, unfortunately.
- 35:10But the one that really upset me was the dogs in the movie.
- 35:17Every time we saw the dogs they just like were freaking out
- 35:20because they're human was just. Acting weird, yeah.
- 35:24Acting weird. And then they just had to like,
- 35:26observe all these people just standing still, being weird and,
- 35:30you know, hurting themselves. And I didn't like that.
- 35:33I didn't like that the dogs had to witness that.
- 35:36It happened multiple times, too. Yeah, you didn't have to keep
- 35:38bringing in dogs for this shit M Night.
- 35:40Like, come on, man. I think M Night felt bad for the
- 35:43dogs too. I think he did.
- 35:46He's. Like that's the twist.
- 35:47Like the docs filled too, Ben, you didn't expect that, did you?
- 35:53OK, all right, let's go into our absurd.
- 35:56Now you can finally break down all your your stuff with the
- 35:59bad. And here's why I think M Knight
- 36:05is just a gentle person in general.
- 36:07Because he doesn't know how to write a couple having an affair.
- 36:14Because we have this whole, like, deathbed confession from
- 36:19Alma to Elliot and Elliot to Alma where she ate tiramisu with
- 36:26another man. Joey, Another Jay.
- 36:29He voiced Joey, too. I know, yeah.
- 36:32And Elliot but superfluous $6 cough syrup from a hot
- 36:39pharmacist these. Not didn't even have a cough.
- 36:44The biggest betrayals he could think of.
- 36:47And then I started thinking about his other movies because
- 36:50the reason relationships fall apart in those are people dying
- 36:58like in 6th Sense or Signs people potentially dying like an
- 37:04old or somebody being a murderer like in Trap.
- 37:09He cannot fathom what an actual affair is.
- 37:14You know what you're making me like?
- 37:16Like, oh, I just came on in my head here.
- 37:18It's like he really like this man has not had any romantic
- 37:21hardships in his life. This.
- 37:22Is the biggest betrayal he can think of is tiramisu in cough
- 37:26syrup? I like that, though.
- 37:28I like that moment with like Elliot being like, and he was
- 37:33lying about that too. Like it was like not like an
- 37:35actual thing, but like in his mind like that was like, I'm
- 37:38going to hurt her. Like, I went and I bought cough
- 37:42syrup from a hot woman and I didn't have a cough.
- 37:46I just like, she's like, are you joking?
- 37:48And he just, like, looks at her all sad.
- 37:50He just shakes his head slowly. Yeah, come on.
- 37:55It's so funny. It's.
- 37:56So stupid. Do you have any other absurds?
- 38:00Well. We, there are several, you know,
- 38:05we have the whole, the whole model home.
- 38:08Why is the model home set decorated like it's a disaster?
- 38:12For a minute I thought it was like one of those model homes,
- 38:14like a nuclear bomb testing site, but it clearly was just
- 38:17meant to be like the HOA model home.
- 38:20There's no fucking way. Like why is everything in there
- 38:23fake? Everything is fake in there.
- 38:26Like they have fake glasses of wine.
- 38:28You don't. That's not how how you stage a
- 38:29home. No, you put like furniture in
- 38:32there, you know, like you don't put fake shit like a plastic
- 38:35bed. Fuck no.
- 38:36You put you put an air bed on a barely put together frame that
- 38:41some asshole is going to jump on not thinking clearly about it.
- 38:44We've seen it happen on House. And we have and he did puncture
- 38:47his. Also, they have to stop the
- 38:54train because they're not getting any communication.
- 38:57Everybody's there at the train station and seemingly everybody
- 39:00moves over to the diner. Except apparently not, because
- 39:04when the diner patrons leave, they all have fucking cars
- 39:07except for Elliot, Alma, Julian, and Jess.
- 39:10Oh. My God, you're right.
- 39:12Where did all of these cars come from?
- 39:14I have to assume they are residents of the town.
- 39:17Where were all the other train people?
- 39:19Was that just actually their stop?
- 39:21They weren't upset about the train not running anymore
- 39:23because they were back home? I don't know.
- 39:26Wow, you have made me realize that that was weird.
- 39:29You're right, man. And it's only because we watch
- 39:32planes, trains and automobiles so much throughout the holidays
- 39:35that I was like, Nope, they should be having a much harder
- 39:38time finding a way back to Boston or Chicago or whichever
- 39:41city. Well, and also when you think
- 39:43about it like the issues are only contained to the Northeast
- 39:47and like it stops in Pennsylvania.
- 39:49So like that train that railroad's going to other
- 39:52states, they would have communication with somewhere in
- 39:56the more Midwest area that they're.
- 39:59Heading towards they lost their end.
- 40:00They can't communicate out either.
- 40:03I don't understand how. OK, well if I lost signal and
- 40:07you tried to call me, it wouldn't matter that you have
- 40:09signal. I don't have signal.
- 40:11I just, well, I don't know, I just, I find it hard to believe
- 40:14that they lost it on their own train, even like backups, you
- 40:17know what I mean? Like you have a radio, some of
- 40:20them. Travis, it was an event, OK?
- 40:23An event was happening. OK, fine.
- 40:26Whatever. Well, yeah, sure.
- 40:28OK. Is that if you're absurd?
- 40:31I mean. You got more 4. 4 right here.
- 40:34We'll probably stumble upon some other things in my notes this
- 40:37weekend. OK, I got plenty.
- 40:40All right, So right off the bat, yeah, Marky Mark is playing a
- 40:43teacher. He's going to do something a
- 40:44little bit differently, but he's winning his students over by
- 40:47insulting their appearances. He's like, listen, buddy, you
- 40:50look hot right now. And I know I'm telling the
- 40:52fucking minor that you're hot, but you're not going to be hot
- 40:55forever, chump, So you better learn how to do science.
- 40:58I yeah, I pulled he, I wrote. He bullies white kid about his
- 41:02future ugliness. Tells him his nose is going to
- 41:05get bigger. Yeah, he nags this child into
- 41:07wanting to learn about science. It's just it's so fucking weird.
- 41:12Next John Luigi like was Amo and his his math comfort that he
- 41:18does for everybody. So anytime he's trying to
- 41:20comfort people, all he does is like throw a math problem at
- 41:23them and try and get them to like do math in their head to
- 41:26try and calm them down. Doesn't work.
- 41:29I yeah, I part of me went into like Fact Check some of that as
- 41:33it was going, but then I was like, I don't know enough math
- 41:35to do that. Next, they try to outrun Lynn.
- 41:39You can't do that. They do for a little bit though.
- 41:43I know how. How do you outrun the wind?
- 41:45You can't see like, the wind coming, and you're going to beat
- 41:47that Like the wind is faster than you, OK?
- 41:50It just is. I don't care who you are.
- 41:52And finally, misses Jones. Everything about that character
- 41:57is so fucking weird. Like right off the bat she is
- 42:01reluctantly hospitable. Like she, like she's like, I
- 42:05guess since you're here, I got to let you in and cook you
- 42:07dinner and let you stay in my house even though I'm against
- 42:09it. Yeah, she she has some paranoia
- 42:12that's going on and I wonder about her.
- 42:16We could have gotten, yeah, like a deeper dive because like, I
- 42:19guess something clearly is going on there.
- 42:20She doesn't have any power. And she's like, living in this
- 42:23house, very old schooly. But like, she slaps chess for
- 42:28reaching for something on the table.
- 42:31And then she just keeps accusing them of wanting the still.
- 42:35And like, why did you allow these people?
- 42:37She feels like she has to do this for some weird reason.
- 42:39Let these people stay in her house.
- 42:41But she is so aggressive to them.
- 42:43Yeah. And her performance is just I
- 42:47guess, and I may have told her to ham it up, like really go big
- 42:50with it because she goes a little bit too big.
- 42:53That was another one of those things where she just says like
- 42:56where the dialogue is just saying something.
- 42:58So that way it will be relevant later.
- 42:59Because she was like, you know, there's an old house Outback
- 43:03where we used to hide folks when they were like running away from
- 43:07where the owners would hide folks when they were running
- 43:08away from plantations. And there's a pipe that you can
- 43:11talk straight to and it sounds like you're in the same room as
- 43:14them. And that's the only reason we
- 43:15know about that. And she?
- 43:16She weeds off with that. She's like, hey, welcome to my
- 43:18house. I have a house in the back over
- 43:20there that you know. You can talk to through a pipe.
- 43:22Yeah. And anyway, we're going to
- 43:23change the subject. Yeah.
- 43:25You guys look like you're not in love.
- 43:27What's up with that? Yeah, you.
- 43:28You're gonna kill me? And then like, and the whole
- 43:30point is so that way later Elliot can talk to Alma through
- 43:34the pipe. Also, can I throw out there,
- 43:37this is another ugly how much Jess gets put in the middle of
- 43:40adult things? Yeah, she is constantly in the
- 43:43middle of adult fucking shit and she's got enough going on.
- 43:45She is 8. Yeah, like her parents just
- 43:48died. Yeah.
- 43:49You know, like, and now she had, like, these two people are your
- 43:51family now. Oh my God, I feel so bad for
- 43:54you. She makes a point.
- 43:55She's like, thanks, Aunt Alma. Yeah, like you're, you're still
- 43:58not Mom, just so you know. Just so we're clear.
- 44:01Yeah, I whenever they have that baby, they're abandoning that
- 44:04kid. I.
- 44:04Know I feel she's she needs counseling.
- 44:07I hope she gets counseling. Marky, Mark's like say hi to
- 44:10your mother. Oh, I'm sorry, don't have.
- 44:14One I'm. Sorry.
- 44:17OK, that's it for my absurd stuff.
- 44:19So let's get into our ratings. What do you rated?
- 44:23Man, it is objectively not like a like the best movie M night's
- 44:29done, but it's got a lot of quirkiness to it.
- 44:32That's fun. I'm going to give it a 6.5.
- 44:35OK, yeah, I have two separate ratings.
- 44:37I have like an objective rating. Is it a good movie?
- 44:39No, like movie movie wise is probably 4, but on the enjoyment
- 44:44scale, I have a lot of fun with this one.
- 44:46So I'd give it a 7. 6.75 yeah. OK, cool.
- 44:52Well then let's let's finally get into that happening.
- 44:55Let's see what's happening. 8:33 AM Central Park.
- 44:58No, I need to talk about the captions or the the credits to
- 45:02be with because they're it's white letters coming over top of
- 45:06clouds and it's making it hard to read the names.
- 45:08And the first thing you see is K Wahlberg.
- 45:10K Wahlberg. K Wahlberg.
- 45:13Being like a little bit aggressive or passive aggressive
- 45:15too right off the bat here. OK, now we're at Central Park.
- 45:188:33 AM. There are two girls on the bench
- 45:21reading. 1 keeps losing her spot and the other hears screaming
- 45:27and barking and suddenly everybody freezes.
- 45:29And her friend Claire, the one who kept losing her spot, takes
- 45:33her hair stick out. Which was really eerie because I
- 45:36had my hair done in a French twist with a hair stick as we
- 45:39were watching this. And Jesse's actually is a sword,
- 45:42Yeah, which I feel like would have been even better for the
- 45:45character in this movie here. Like, yeah, it would have been
- 45:48cool. It really actually demonstrated
- 45:49a lot better seeing it in person.
- 45:51Whenever you pulled it, it's like you had, like, your own
- 45:54sheath on the back there. It's like Sheen, just like,
- 45:56pulled it out. Yeah, but she's dabs herself
- 45:59with it. Yeah.
- 46:01Then we see some construction workers all sitting around chit
- 46:04chatting, and suddenly Mackenzie falls and he lands really badly.
- 46:09And then Davis. And then we see several more,
- 46:12and they're all following the lead of Travis's guy in
- 46:17Midsummer who decides he's gonna jump off with a flourish feet
- 46:21first. Poor guy.
- 46:23Thankfully no Atta stupan mallet for that.
- 46:25I. Was gonna say no mallet.
- 46:26Yeah, that would probably save them.
- 46:29I think it would be, yeah. I think it would be kinder.
- 46:32All right, so now we are in Philly, Philadelphia.
- 46:36We're at public school. It's about 9:30 and Marky Mark
- 46:39is talking about bees dying and he asks these young teenagers
- 46:45why. Why?
- 46:47Why? I'm thinking of like the the
- 46:51ring or not the ring. Fuck the Lord of the Rings
- 46:53interview with Elijah Wood and he's like why?
- 46:59Yeah, and then this is where he nags a teenager into engaging in
- 47:03class and then refers to the vice principal as Lord
- 47:05Voldemort. Yeah, like the vice principal
- 47:08comes in and he turns off the lights and ducks down.
- 47:12He says the Dark Lord is here. We're playing nightcrawlers.
- 47:16Everybody get on the floor. It's so weird.
- 47:20And like, the vice principal was like, all right, enough of the
- 47:23bullshit, you got to come with me.
- 47:24All teachers were pulled to the auditorium.
- 47:27And Elliot's like, is it OK to leave all of these kids alone?
- 47:31Like, what's going to happen? But it's because they're all
- 47:35meeting with the principal who is telling them about what is a
- 47:38suspected terrorism attack in New York City.
- 47:42They need to pay attention for the signs cuz I think it's like
- 47:47some sort of neurotoxin or something is being released.
- 47:50The first stage is confused speech.
- 47:52The second stage is physical disorientation.
- 47:55And I know what you guys are thinking.
- 47:57Oh no. Travis has exhibited those
- 48:00signs. It's OK.
- 48:03We have not reached stage 3, which is just referred to as
- 48:07fatal. Yeah, it doesn't.
- 48:10A principle is not even keeping the same same.
- 48:17Oh God, I can't think of the word for the list it's got.
- 48:19It's have the same continuity. It's got a match tenses and
- 48:23style between list items. I.
- 48:25Don't know what you're talking. About either, anyway, says
- 48:28dismiss the students, bring your work home, and just be ready to
- 48:31come back to teaching whenever they say that, it's all clear.
- 48:34So as Marky Mark is escorting his students out of the class,
- 48:38he makes them recite the scientific method.
- 48:42Does he? Yeah, yeah, they're they're
- 48:44talking about the different stages of the scientific method.
- 48:46I don't know how many there were in 2008, because I remember in
- 48:49elementary school we had seven steps to the scientific method.
- 48:52No, but at one point it got lower to five.
- 48:54Did it really? Yes.
- 48:56Come on man, is this like the Pluto?
- 48:57Situation all over again. Like Pluto and the colors.
- 49:00The rainbow. Oh man, they got rid of Indigo.
- 49:02That's some bullshit, OK, And yeah, they're, they're leaving
- 49:06now. Everybody's leaving but Julian
- 49:11John Orgazzano. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:12He's a math teacher. And he is talking about all of
- 49:16these different statistics, the likeliness of them to be hit.
- 49:19And then he says his mom has invited him and Yvette and Jess
- 49:23out, and also Elliot and Alma. And Elliot being like the
- 49:28calmest, coolest, casualest person in the world says hey, if
- 49:32Alma is being weird, just ignore it.
- 49:34And Angela is like, are you guys on the brink of divorce again?
- 49:37And he's like, what? No, I'm just saying if she is
- 49:40being weird, she isn't. He's one of those guys that's
- 49:43excited to hear that his best friend is about to break up with
- 49:46his girlfriend. Like, is it about to happen?
- 49:48Really, man, it's a shame. Because see, here's the thing,
- 49:52immediately what Julian does is says this is something you never
- 49:56say to your best friend. But on the day of your wedding,
- 49:58right before you all were going to walk down the aisle, I went
- 50:01to check on Alma and she was crying.
- 50:03And I knew she wasn't in love with you and wanted to marry
- 50:06you. And I never told you that until
- 50:07now as we're on the brink of terrorism attack.
- 50:09All right, have fun. It's I mean.
- 50:11It's one of those things like crying at a wedding is normal,
- 50:14but like, I guess it was like the type of tears like, oh God,
- 50:17this isn't the life I really saw for myself.
- 50:21Yeah, there's just, I don't know, there was this whole
- 50:26conversation. It's a fucking.
- 50:28Bomb. So bizarre, so out of a field.
- 50:33Marky Mark, he's got a lot of growing up to do in this movie
- 50:36because he's he's got a terrorist attack to deal with
- 50:38and now marital problems. Also, I just want to shout out
- 50:41because there is one extra in the background who is on
- 50:43crutches, and I feel like that is the universal truth of middle
- 50:46schools and high schools is that at any given time there will
- 50:49always be at least one student on crutches.
- 50:51So I appreciate that that was included.
- 50:53You know that's true. That's the kind of attention to
- 50:55detail I've come to appreciate about M Night Shyamalan movies.
- 50:58Yeah, I'm he. He knows everything except for
- 51:01how to do bad relationships. He he is too happily married.
- 51:05Yeah, he's got three beautiful children.
- 51:08His life is awesome. He is rich as hell.
- 51:11It's true. It's true.
- 51:13His life is too good. Yeah.
- 51:15So New York City is fully evacuating, though.
- 51:17Yeah. The toxin is a.
- 51:20It's like a. It's preservation, self
- 51:22preservation instincts. Yeah, and all in the We see her
- 51:28now back at their house. She gets a call from Joey.
- 51:31On her razor. Yeah, and she just lets it ring.
- 51:34Yeah. And then as that finishes, we
- 51:36see. Elliot is packing and he makes
- 51:39sure to put on his mood ring. It's super important.
- 51:43And at first I was joking around.
- 51:44I was like, is that a fucking mood ring?
- 51:45And we found out later it is a fucking mood ring.
- 51:48So we get to the train station and more news saying that the
- 51:51neurotoxin is natural. Julian and Jess are there.
- 51:55They already got all the tickets.
- 51:56They're going ahead of a vet, Julian's wife, because she was
- 52:00across town. So she's going to catch a later
- 52:02train. Alma immediately knows that
- 52:07Julian knows that they fought this morning because he was
- 52:09like, You sure you're ready for this, Alma?
- 52:12He is weirdly aggressive to her, so he's like, he really is like
- 52:16I want, I don't want you dating my friend anymore.
- 52:19They're married, I know, but. He, I think he refuses to accept
- 52:22that. It's like I saw you cry.
- 52:23So legally it didn't count. Yeah.
- 52:25And so Alma takes Elliott aside and she goes, I am upset.
- 52:29I will sit separately and try to not be upset.
- 52:32And that's almost verbatim the words she says.
- 52:35I appreciate her. Take her.
- 52:36There's like, I like don't tell people of like my personal shit,
- 52:40you know, like that was between you and me.
- 52:42He didn't need to know about that, but then he's like, he
- 52:45guessed it. I'm a kid.
- 52:46I just this is this movie is all tell no show because like later
- 52:50Jess is really nervous and she whispers when she's nervous and
- 52:54almost like I also don't like to show how I feel.
- 52:57Yeah, you're right. Yeah.
- 52:58We will bond over this, but nobody will know because we
- 53:00won't be showing how we feel about that.
- 53:04All right, so she goes on the train ahead of them.
- 53:07We now see Rittenhouse Park, Philadelphia.
- 53:10It's 11:33 AM and we get a gust of wind blowing and everybody
- 53:14freezes. We got.
- 53:15This It freezes. It's traffic jam that's
- 53:18happening. A cop is walking through.
- 53:20He talks to Sal, a cab driver. Apparently he talks to Sal all
- 53:23the time. I was gonna say to each other by
- 53:24name. Yeah, it was a very, it was a
- 53:26weird exchange here. Yeah, and the wind blows.
- 53:31Sal is the one that is like alert for a minute because the
- 53:35cop takes a gun, shoots himself, then Sal gets out of the car,
- 53:39takes a gun and shoots himself. And then a woman on the sidewalk
- 53:42takes a gun, shoots herself. And I need to point out that all
- 53:43of them have a bullet hole in the very middle of their
- 53:45forehead, which, Who shoots himself at this angle?
- 53:48Can you even do it? It hurts my wrist.
- 53:50If the plant's talking. Like it hurts to do that.
- 53:54It really does. I don't know.
- 53:55Maybe they have like the weird joints, I don't know.
- 53:57And it's like a pistol. So I don't feel like you could
- 53:59do I don't. The question that came in my
- 54:01mind, though, is like, what happens when, like, the gun's
- 54:04out of ammo? Like the person goes over there
- 54:06and does that like. Pistol whip themselves to death.
- 54:08They got it. Yeah, I've already got the gun I
- 54:11got to do. Something.
- 54:11Yeah, like that's a man. It would be too lame to turn
- 54:14back now. Yeah, that would be.
- 54:15Embarrassing. Alma answers Joey's phone call
- 54:18this time, and she says that he's being very fatal
- 54:21attraction. And all they did was go on a
- 54:23tiramisu. And now I'm worried that you're
- 54:25just going to be like, standing behind the shower curtain while
- 54:27I'm in the shower. That's Psycho, not Fatal
- 54:29Attraction. You're worried he's gonna boil
- 54:31your Bunny? Yep, also I guess that's
- 54:34probably the only context that I asked for.
- 54:36Bad relationships. Fatal Attraction, the one bad
- 54:39relationship in existence. That's why it's a scary movie,
- 54:42cuz they go wrong. That was a twist.
- 54:47Weird to reveal the twist so early in the movie, but you know
- 54:50what? I'm very invested in the
- 54:52outcome. Yeah.
- 54:53Train. Everybody on the train hears
- 54:54about the attack in Philadelphia.
- 54:57Julian is trying to call a vet. She is on a bus to New Jersey.
- 55:02Which I thought was funny because like we see, I mean,
- 55:05they know it's the plants at this point, right?
- 55:07Or they have an idea. No, they just know that the
- 55:09neurotoxin is something natural, not chemically, not like man
- 55:12made. She's going to Jersey, the
- 55:14Garden State, which I don't think that bodes well for her.
- 55:19It's only called the Garden State because the petrochemical
- 55:24refinery state was too big to fit on a license plate.
- 55:29OK, I don't even that that word was too big for me.
- 55:32I don't understand what that means it.
- 55:33Is a Miss Congeniality reference.
- 55:36Oh, it is. Oh, I'm sorry.
- 55:40You should be. This is embarrassing.
- 55:41This is very embarrassing for you.
- 55:44The train stops and filbert. Yeah, and Mark, Mikey, Matt goes
- 55:48where are we read. The fucking sign.
- 55:51He says. That he does in that same
- 55:54delivery, Yeah. And the the train's being
- 55:57stopped. There are 50 conductors on the
- 55:59stream. They're all gathered around
- 56:01talking. And he goes, where are we?
- 56:03And they're like some town called Filbert.
- 56:05Why are we here? The train stopped.
- 56:07Why did the train stop? It did.
- 56:10You got to tell me the truth, guys.
- 56:11I got people here. I got to take care of them and.
- 56:14Then he took the whole thing to hearts.
- 56:16Like, I got to grow up. I got to be a big boy.
- 56:19So they do tell him that they just lost communication with
- 56:21everybody. And then seemingly, we've
- 56:24already talked about this, seemingly everybody from the
- 56:26train goes to the diner. We know that that's not actually
- 56:28true. I I mean, I get the impression
- 56:30that this is the only place in town because it's called Filbert
- 56:33Restaurant. Yeah, It's just like one.
- 56:35It's the restaurant. Elliott shows Jess his mood
- 56:40ring, let's her wear it. At first I thought he gives her
- 56:42the ring, but no, it's just that way he can see what her mood is.
- 56:45Well, he's, you know, it's his ring, Yeah.
- 56:47Give it back. If you give it back to me and I
- 56:51put it on, it's gonna be angry because you held it too long.
- 56:53And then a woman has a video from her sister who is at the
- 56:57zoo, and it's the zookeeper feeding himself to the lions.
- 57:02Were we able to send such large videos in 2008?
- 57:07The the the whole this whole scene made me think back like
- 57:09was this shit actually like I always attribute like this
- 57:12technology until like going into the 20 tens because like.
- 57:15Sometimes you send me a video and it's got 5 pixels, you know?
- 57:21Yeah, I think that changed with iPhones to Android because I the
- 57:24messaging system changed, but I didn't remember iPhones existing
- 57:29in 2008, but they do. And I think this is actually
- 57:33shot in 2007. I was still rocking the Razor or
- 57:37like the little like kick like phone, whatever.
- 57:40Like it has a keyboard. Sidekick.
- 57:42Yeah, Sidekick, like, but yeah, iphone's I guess sort of thing.
- 57:46I don't know. The news said that they're now
- 57:49now not sure that it's terrorists and they're showing,
- 57:52they're seeing signs that smaller and smaller towns in the
- 57:55northeast are being affected. Then the power goes out and
- 58:00somebody, since we need to get out of here, whatever this is,
- 58:04it looks like it's not occurring about 90 miles from here.
- 58:07What like how? It's an actual line of dialogue.
- 58:11I wrote that down word for word. That's what I'm saying then,
- 58:14like the the right like the dialogue in this movie is, it's
- 58:17just kind of weird it. Is so soap opera Y and I'm it's
- 58:21funny. It is funny, Yeah, I I enjoy it.
- 58:24Yeah, somehow everybody in there has cars except for Elliott and
- 58:30his group. Elliott and Alma get a ride from
- 58:33a couple who own a plant nursery, and they're like, we
- 58:36have two more and they said, cool, great, get on in.
- 58:39Julian has not been able to get a hold of a vet, so he's got a
- 58:44seat in a car that's going to Princeton.
- 58:47So he's going to go try and find a vet and then he's going to
- 58:49catch up with them. Like the scene because like the
- 58:53car keeps beeping at him and he's having this long
- 58:55conversation. He's telling them to keep Jess
- 58:57but like keep beeping and they just eventually start to smoke.
- 59:00Yeah, they, it seems like they're gonna drive away without
- 59:02him. But he, you know, he says
- 59:05goodbye. He tells don't take my
- 59:07daughter's hand unless you mean it.
- 59:08Again, that was like a weirdly aggressive thing.
- 59:10He was like, I like, he hates her like.
- 59:12Yeah, it's like. You ruined my friend.
- 59:14We used to be cool. I used to hang out with him all
- 59:15the time and then you came along.
- 59:18And so he runs, he manages to get into the car as it's moving,
- 59:22and then he waves goodbye in slow motion.
- 59:24So you know, he's not long for this one.
- 59:26He's. Dead.
- 59:26That's a dead man. Right man, the drivers are
- 59:29talking about their nursery. They they talk about that they
- 59:33think it's the plants. They are the ones that posit
- 59:36this theory because they're like, you know, plants have
- 59:38feelings, they respond to stimuli around them.
- 59:40They can communicate to each other.
- 59:41They can communicate to other species.
- 59:43I think it's the plants. Also, while we're here, going to
- 59:46pack some hot dogs for the road. Hot dogs are great fun shape,
- 59:49lots of protein. Not even joking.
- 59:51These are his. It was positives for hot dogs.
- 59:53Yeah, they're like hot dogs. Get a bag of wrap, by the way,
- 59:56They have a cool shape. A cool shape.
- 59:57I've never heard anybody talk about a hot dog and say that's a
- 1:00:00cool shape. It's.
- 1:00:02It's very ergonomical for a lunch on the go.
- 1:00:05Yeah, I mean it is they they have points, but.
- 1:00:07And they correctly identify mustard as the top condiment to
- 1:00:11put on it. Gross.
- 1:00:13That's nasty. Mustard, onions or sauerkraut.
- 1:00:15It's also like cold hot dogs. It's just, it's just a gross
- 1:00:18thing all. I used to love some cold hot
- 1:00:21dogs. Well, you'd fit right in with
- 1:00:22these. People I would these.
- 1:00:24These green weenies. Absolutely.
- 1:00:27So Julian's car, they're driving through like a shit ton of
- 1:00:30death, like just people hanging from trees.
- 1:00:32It's real dark. One of the persons from the
- 1:00:35trees there is one of the producers, which is funny
- 1:00:38because like there was, it was a behind the scenes scene John
- 1:00:40like was on was like, look in this movie, new trend, new
- 1:00:43trend. Producers hang.
- 1:00:45She's like pointing out there like I was like, damn, that's
- 1:00:49dark. Yeah, it's a bit dark.
- 1:00:50I was thinking you were gonna talk about the behind the scenes
- 1:00:53where the producer was like, do you think we can return all of
- 1:00:55these garden hoses after the movie?
- 1:00:57Is that what they said? Yeah, I didn't catch that.
- 1:01:01Yeah, so he's one of the people in the car is freaking out.
- 1:01:04So he decides to make things worse by having her do a math
- 1:01:08problem. Yeah, I don't.
- 1:01:11I don't feel like you would get $1,000,000.
- 1:01:13I know that things start multiplying exponentially.
- 1:01:15He said like $10 million. Yeah.
- 1:01:18But then a month I don't even remember that question.
- 1:01:20It's like double, you start with one cent one day and then it
- 1:01:23double S to two cents the next day, four cents the next day.
- 1:01:26And I understand when you start multiplying things by them.
- 1:01:29So like, yeah, it. Has.
- 1:01:31Yeah, I understand that it gets big, but 10 million just feels
- 1:01:33so unbelievable. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:01:36But we don't even have time to worry about it because the car
- 1:01:40just has a hole in the roof. It's, I'm not going to lie, it's
- 1:01:44a little funny scene, like the hole.
- 1:01:46And like they like slow zoom and it just keeps cutting back and
- 1:01:48forth. It's just so dramatic.
- 1:01:50Yeah. And then, like the car, the Jeep
- 1:01:52stops in the middle of the road. No, it crashes into.
- 1:01:55No, it stops at first, which is how you know it's having effect.
- 1:01:59And. Then the guy just pours it into
- 1:02:01the tree. Everybody else was unbuckled
- 1:02:03except for John Leguizamo, but he gets out and he takes some of
- 1:02:07the shattered glass and cuts himself.
- 1:02:09There's a radio report saying that they have another theory
- 1:02:13that maybe the water was contaminated.
- 1:02:18Elliott and his car, they're all driving out now.
- 1:02:21They see something in the road. They don't want to get too close
- 1:02:24in case it is dead bodies. And then the wife nursery owner
- 1:02:28says, hey, your binoculars are in the back from when you were
- 1:02:31spying on the neighbors. I love these.
- 1:02:33People give. Me a whole movie about these.
- 1:02:36Two, I thought it was. I thought that was almost saying
- 1:02:41that to Elliot. No, no, no, no.
- 1:02:42It was the IT was the plant nursery owners.
- 1:02:45OK, See. Again, more comedy there,
- 1:02:47though. That was like a funny line.
- 1:02:49And that is a relatable thing. You know what I mean?
- 1:02:51Like, we don't do that. Just to be clear, we don't have
- 1:02:54a set of binoculars about the neighbors, but we do make
- 1:02:56comments on our neighbors. Yes.
- 1:02:59Is it all people? Yeah, everybody does, I assume.
- 1:03:02They definitely talk about us, so I'm not, but it's just, it
- 1:03:06was really funny. They take the binoculars, they
- 1:03:08see that it's bodies, so they kind of reroute themselves and
- 1:03:11they get to a fork in the road. There is an Army Humvee there.
- 1:03:15We've got Private Oster. He said that there were he came
- 1:03:20from. His army.
- 1:03:22Base. You have an Army base, and there
- 1:03:24were a bunch of soldiers, like caught up in the barbed wire on
- 1:03:26the fence around the perimeter. Other cars start coming along
- 1:03:30everywhere they're coming from, saying that they saw bodies some
- 1:03:33way back. So they're all trying to figure
- 1:03:35out a way that they can get through safely to somewhere
- 1:03:39outside of this perimeter where The thing is having the effect.
- 1:03:43One woman has gotten a phone call from her daughter in
- 1:03:46Princeton who confirms that, like, everything's being
- 1:03:49affected there. And then she starts talking
- 1:03:51funny. And then we hear some glass
- 1:03:54shatter and some wind, and the woman's crying because it's.
- 1:03:58It's a death. Yeah.
- 1:03:59And then Jess and Elliot cry together because they know that
- 1:04:03that means that Julian's probably gone as well as a vet.
- 1:04:09So we get further breakdown on how plants work by plant guy.
- 1:04:13He starts talking to all of them.
- 1:04:14He's like, yeah, they evolve faster, Yeah, than most things.
- 1:04:18Like they evolve rapidly to target specific threats and they
- 1:04:22can communicate interspecily. I guess that does kind of
- 1:04:25explain how things change in this movie, like where it goes
- 1:04:27from large batches so X single people.
- 1:04:30Yeah, they're trying to go to a less populated area and luckily
- 1:04:35one of these people that came up here, he was a realtor, Realtor
- 1:04:38to save the day. He knows where the low
- 1:04:39population zones are around here, so that's where they're
- 1:04:43going to all try and go. They're going to go in two
- 1:04:45groups, people that are ready to go and people that aren't ready
- 1:04:47to go. And then Marky Mark says fuck
- 1:04:49that. My group's going to go even
- 1:04:50farther ahead of everyone. Also, they're staying off roads
- 1:04:53because yeah, they're like somehow attacking roads.
- 1:04:57Yeah, as they're walking, Alma confesses about her dessert date
- 1:05:01to Elliot. So he has his marriage crumble
- 1:05:05in front of a bunch of strangers and Jess.
- 1:05:08Yeah, it's it's pretty bad. And then they start hearing
- 1:05:11Auster shout and they hear gunshots, and everybody in
- 1:05:18Elliot's group has decided he's the one that needs to go handle
- 1:05:20this. And he's like, well, it's too
- 1:05:22late. He's already shooting.
- 1:05:23And they're like, no, you got to stop.
- 1:05:24There's other people in the group and you just keep hearing
- 1:05:26shots. And he goes, just give me a
- 1:05:27goddamn second. Yeah, I like this.
- 1:05:29Give me a second. Give me a second.
- 1:05:31Just give me a goddamn 2nd and. He's like, all right, we're
- 1:05:34going to outrun the wind. Yeah, he uses the scientific
- 1:05:36method. He's going through those steps
- 1:05:37again, and he's like, OK, OK, more people, like a lot of
- 1:05:42people set it off. So we need to be in smaller
- 1:05:44groups and we need to run faster than the wind.
- 1:05:47And we can do all of these things.
- 1:05:48We can absolutely do this. So they break into smaller
- 1:05:51groups. Elliot is with Alma, Jess, Jared
- 1:05:53and Josh. They stay ahead of the wind for
- 1:05:57the most part, until they don't because it's wind, but they're
- 1:06:01OK because they're in a small group.
- 1:06:04They find an abandoned truck, and the radio inside says that
- 1:06:10there are more nuclear power plants in the Northeast and the
- 1:06:12rest of the country. So, you know, maybe it has
- 1:06:16something to do with this. Maybe.
- 1:06:18Who knows? Have you ever seen one of those
- 1:06:20maps? No.
- 1:06:21It's scary. They do find a house, so they go
- 1:06:27to the house, there's a map inside of it, and they're
- 1:06:29planning to go to a low population area.
- 1:06:31Still, that's still a plan. Elliott has a very positive and
- 1:06:35affirming conversation with a plant.
- 1:06:37And then he goes, oh, it's plastic.
- 1:06:40He continues to talk to. You perfect.
- 1:06:42It's this is a beautiful scene. I love this so much it's so
- 1:06:45funny. Everything in this house is
- 1:06:47fake. And again, if you're going to
- 1:06:49stage a model home, why is it going to be messy like this?
- 1:06:53It is weird I. Don't understand?
- 1:06:55I, I, yeah, the whole setup of the house here is very strange.
- 1:06:59Also, I was like, I was surprised by the kids here
- 1:07:02because we didn't see them before, right?
- 1:07:03But suddenly he knows these kids and he's like talking to them,
- 1:07:06like on a first name basis. Yeah, and the kids are like
- 1:07:08giving him relationship counselling.
- 1:07:10Yeah, like did like, are they students?
- 1:07:12I don't think so. Like, I don't know like but we
- 1:07:15somehow they have formed a bond, I guess I.
- 1:07:18Don't know. Yeah, One of them wants to try
- 1:07:20and take the ring from Elliott, who's like, it's sentimental,
- 1:07:23which again got. It from cereal box that.
- 1:07:26Morning. Yes, Yeah.
- 1:07:27It's so confusing. Yeah.
- 1:07:29So they start to leave the house and they see two more groups are
- 1:07:33coming together towards that house.
- 1:07:35And they're trying to, like, shout to them from a distance
- 1:07:38saying, like, don't get a big group together.
- 1:07:40It's safer in small groups. But by that point, a man has
- 1:07:43started a lawn mower and laid down in front of it.
- 1:07:46That's a scary one right there, yeah.
- 1:07:48Yeah, it's pretty rough. So we see.
- 1:07:53There's a radio, they find a radio on a fence and it is
- 1:07:58telling everybody in the Northeast to report to police
- 1:08:02borders. And obviously they're groups
- 1:08:03like idiots. That's going to be big groups.
- 1:08:05When you say in small groups. Alma wants to have a rest stop
- 1:08:09for Jess. She's only 8.
- 1:08:11She needs food and rest. Fuck the 13 year olds that are
- 1:08:14there. And then Elliot is like I have a
- 1:08:19spot $6 bottle of cough syrup from a hot pharmacist and God as
- 1:08:24somebody who continuously needs cough syrup, I missed the days
- 1:08:28when it was like $6. I know right?
- 1:08:30For good cough syrup. Yeah, it's a funny scene, but
- 1:08:34like, I still like, I don't understand.
- 1:08:37This. Give him an award for that
- 1:08:38monologue. I don't care which one, just
- 1:08:42give him a word. They talk about breaking into
- 1:08:45the house. It's like all boarded up, so it
- 1:08:48looks fairly deserted. And this is where behind the
- 1:08:50scenes Mark Wahlberg is. Like if it's a deserted, boarded
- 1:08:53up house, why do we think we'll find food?
- 1:08:55Good questions, Mark. I mean like he did occasionally
- 1:08:58have some good questions. Yeah.
- 1:09:00I mean, canned food, canned goods, I can see that being
- 1:09:03that's an, that's a reasonable answer, yeah.
- 1:09:08So they they're not getting an answer and the kids are starting
- 1:09:13to peer through the window. Yeah, cuz they're 13 year old
- 1:09:15boys like Josh is like, I'm gonna break down the door.
- 1:09:18I can't. I can do it.
- 1:09:19This is also Abigail Breslin's little brother.
- 1:09:22Yeah. Fun fact.
- 1:09:23And he, yeah, he's acting big boyish right here because he
- 1:09:28feels safe with his his posse. And then we do hear somebody
- 1:09:32from inside the house. It appears that they're doomsday
- 1:09:34preppers. So they aren't going to let
- 1:09:38these folks in because on top, because obviously they are
- 1:09:42prepped for the doomsday and it's happening.
- 1:09:44So why would we let anyone in? And then they're like, all
- 1:09:46right, well, I'm going to shoot these children.
- 1:09:48And that's what happens. Elliot does try to stop it by
- 1:09:51holding the the shotgun the shotgun which I feel like would
- 1:09:55hurt but. It should, yeah, but no, I'm the
- 1:09:59old kid here. Gets blasted in the chest and
- 1:10:02then a little handgun pops out from the other window and shoots
- 1:10:06the other kid in the head and they give them 3 seconds to get
- 1:10:09off the porch. So.
- 1:10:11They slow MO run away. They can get out of there.
- 1:10:13We see the news talking about the events cresting.
- 1:10:18People are watching the coverage of this like all across the
- 1:10:23country. The trio finds a house with no
- 1:10:25power, overgrown driveway. They assume it's abandoned, but
- 1:10:30again, they are wrong because Missus Jones on the porch.
- 1:10:33She goes, well I suppose y'all can come in for supper and then
- 1:10:37she pros into their relationship saying somebody's always chasing
- 1:10:40somebody, you're going to figure out what that's about.
- 1:10:43She is isolated and self-sustaining.
- 1:10:45Nowadays we would refer to that as homesteading.
- 1:10:48She she was just giving off weird vibes the entire time.
- 1:10:51She does not want to hear about what's going on in the world.
- 1:10:54If she doesn't know it can't hurt her.
- 1:10:55That is her general thoughts, which is not true as we will see
- 1:10:59shortly. She's like, well, I suppose I
- 1:11:01got to let you all stay in the guest room.
- 1:11:03She exactly, she's just so like, I guess I got to like, you don't
- 1:11:07got to do anything, man. This is your house if you're
- 1:11:09really this uneasy. We got chased away from another
- 1:11:12house with a gun. You could do that here.
- 1:11:14Like just saw two children get shot in front of us.
- 1:11:17You know what I mean? Like this like.
- 1:11:18You don't have to do anything you don't want to.
- 1:11:20We've learned that the hard way. Alma correctly doesn't trust
- 1:11:25Missus Jones, and Missus Jones hears whispering and is like,
- 1:11:29are you guys going to steal from me?
- 1:11:31Are you going to murder me? And Elliott says what?
- 1:11:35No. In the morning he tries to go
- 1:11:39talk to her a little bit more, just to give a little bit of
- 1:11:42context and why they would like to stay there longer.
- 1:11:44And instead of finding her in her bedroom, he finds a creepy
- 1:11:48doll, kind of like one of the ones from Long Legs.
- 1:11:51Yeah. And she comes in, she goes.
- 1:11:53I knew it. Y'all going to leave?
- 1:11:55I wanted to know more about what was happening here.
- 1:11:58Clearly, there's a lot to this woman's story.
- 1:12:01I think it's an older woman and I, I think she's maybe a little
- 1:12:03ill and just hasn't been around people in a while.
- 1:12:05So it's just a bad combination. I guess so, yeah.
- 1:12:08And she goes out into the garden and she's still yelling, and the
- 1:12:12wind hits her and uh oh, she's being affected by the wind.
- 1:12:17And he's real alarmed by that because she's by herself out
- 1:12:20there. Yeah, that's that's as small a
- 1:12:22group as you can get. So he runs through the house as
- 1:12:25she's slamming her head through windows.
- 1:12:27So he's got to get to a room with that doesn't have a broken
- 1:12:31window. And he hears Alma and Jess's
- 1:12:33voice, and it turns out it's the other end of the pipe.
- 1:12:36They're in that house in the backyard.
- 1:12:38And so he talks to them through the pipe, talks about buying
- 1:12:42that mood ring on their first date.
- 1:12:43And still, at this point still, we don't know.
- 1:12:46He got this mood ring from a cereal box.
- 1:12:48So I'm like, cool, he bought her this ring on their first date.
- 1:12:51She kept it as a memento maybe, or he took it back.
- 1:12:55Either way, he's the one that put it on before they left this
- 1:12:57morning. I don't understand.
- 1:12:58The dialogue between them here is really weird too.
- 1:13:01She's like, yeah, I remember when you first bought that for
- 1:13:03me. Like it turned orange and or
- 1:13:05purple, and I meant that I was horny.
- 1:13:06He's like what the fuck? Jess is like, I want my real
- 1:13:09mom. And Dad, you're right there.
- 1:13:11Like they it's so weird. Like they completely forget that
- 1:13:14there's this child with them in this like world ending.
- 1:13:17Event you are guardian ad litems now act like it.
- 1:13:21Yeah, this kid just has to like, sit there quietly dealing with
- 1:13:24these two weird adults. Bullshit.
- 1:13:27I feel so bad for Jess. And he's like, you know what?
- 1:13:31If I'm going to die, I want to die with you.
- 1:13:33So he walks out into the wind and I'm like, my guy, at least
- 1:13:36get a bandana and cover your face.
- 1:13:38Yeah, there are precautions. We saw, like, in one event
- 1:13:41earlier, like, people around the country, people are wearing gas
- 1:13:43masks. Yeah, I know you probably can't
- 1:13:45find a gas mask right off the bat, but like, yeah, cover your
- 1:13:47face. But instead, Almond Jess also
- 1:13:49decide they're gonna raw dog the fresh air.
- 1:13:51And they all meet and we see that this is Arundale County.
- 1:13:549:58 AM They go back inside, realize that they're not
- 1:14:00murdering themselves, and figure the event must have ended I.
- 1:14:04I still feel like that was weirdly selfish for all my to
- 1:14:07just bring Jess out there too. Like, queerly.
- 1:14:09You want to die too, right? You want to die?
- 1:14:10Yeah. You want to die.
- 1:14:11OK, let's go. She she's like, she took
- 1:14:14advantage of the fact that she can't speak without whispering.
- 1:14:17She's like, what's what's that? I can't.
- 1:14:18Hear you. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:20OK. Yeah.
- 1:14:20OK let's go. Honestly that's what like oh man
- 1:14:25this kids going to have trauma and she needs.
- 1:14:27So much therapy. It's just it's going to be a
- 1:14:30rough ride for this child. We see them getting just ready
- 1:14:35for school, they're going back to class.
- 1:14:37She has to have her special hair clip.
- 1:14:39Are they living in Almond Elliot's apartment or as they
- 1:14:42move into Julian and Yvette? I think.
- 1:14:44They moved into their. Because it's got like a kids
- 1:14:47room all set up. It does and it's not very long
- 1:14:50after and the news is saying that they figure it was just an
- 1:14:55act of nature. One of those is going to be
- 1:14:57unexplainable. It ended at 957 AMA full minute
- 1:15:01before the three of them walked out there.
- 1:15:05They figure it's a warning. And you know what?
- 1:15:08Now that they've got this all figured out, Almond Elliot, they
- 1:15:12fucked to completion. She's got a pregnancy test.
- 1:15:16Sorry, that's probably the like grossest way I could have put
- 1:15:18that. That was no, that's correct.
- 1:15:21They did. She she's like, he proved that
- 1:15:24he can protect her and she's a big boy.
- 1:15:26Yeah. And yeah, she, she felt
- 1:15:29comfortable with kids now that she had, you know, a child.
- 1:15:32That they practiced back, yeah. Yeah, they had a practice child.
- 1:15:36Yeah, it did that. Kids gonna get abandoned once
- 1:15:38this next like the actual kid comes out.
- 1:15:41Yes, you're almost nine years old.
- 1:15:43You can, you can take care of yourself, right?
- 1:15:46We've got our real child now. She says the same thing.
- 1:15:49She's like, I have a feeling that if anything happens to us,
- 1:15:52you won't be able to step up to take care of us.
- 1:15:54So we need you to just go, go get it out.
- 1:15:59Jess, you you act like too much of A child.
- 1:16:02I'm in fifth grade, you see. That's what I'm talking.
- 1:16:04About this is the problem. Yeah, this is exactly what we've
- 1:16:06been talking about. And then we cut to Francais.
- 1:16:12Yeah, we don't get a time stamp or like a location either.
- 1:16:15We just have to assume because they speak French.
- 1:16:17Well, I. Canada, you know, like.
- 1:16:19Yes, but Travis, there were also baguettes, so we know it was
- 1:16:23France. And nights, it's like, I don't
- 1:16:28know the concept of other nations either.
- 1:16:29It's just baguettes. Yeah, I only knew that they were
- 1:16:33in France because I was looking through the credits just to see
- 1:16:37what names I recognize popping up.
- 1:16:39And one of them said French bicyclist and the other one said
- 1:16:42other French bicyclist. And these guys are talking about
- 1:16:45their bicycles being at the shop.
- 1:16:46I feel like it had to be like it would have the only way it has
- 1:16:51that punch is it's a completely different continent because like
- 1:16:54if it's like in Canada, like it could like organically spread of
- 1:16:57OK. For a minute I thought you were
- 1:16:59saying France wasn't in a different continent and I was
- 1:17:02trying to figure out how to explain to.
- 1:17:03You. No, no, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:17:04Like it's. Separated by land.
- 1:17:06Yeah. So like the plants weren't
- 1:17:07talking to each other in America over there in France.
- 1:17:10Like, hey, hey, you know what I mean?
- 1:17:11Like, OK, there's a big sea there.
- 1:17:13Separating them. Gotcha.
- 1:17:15All right, That's it. OK, that's it.
- 1:17:18That's it. Do you bump it?
- 1:17:20Do you bump your score up? Annie, I'll.
- 1:17:22Bump it 26.75. Yeah, yeah, OK cuz.
- 1:17:24It's just a fun fucking time. It's messy as hell.
- 1:17:27I wanna correct some of the continuity issues, but it's fun.
- 1:17:32Yeah, I'll keep mine at A7 because it's a good time, man.
- 1:17:36It is bad, but it's bad in the ways that I enjoy.
- 1:17:40Yeah, I love bad movies. And like on like the when we're
- 1:17:44talking about bad movies here, it's actually one of the better
- 1:17:47bad movies. Yeah.
- 1:17:49I mean he he is skilled in directing for.
- 1:17:52Sure he is. It's just a lot of weird
- 1:17:54decisions, a lot of weird acting choices and writing choices.
- 1:17:58Yeah. You know, I think he was in a
- 1:18:00rut because he was just coming off of a flop.
- 1:18:02And then he did this. And like, I'm glad that he dug
- 1:18:05himself out of this because we know what he's capable of.
- 1:18:07We've, you know, he's had a lot of movies that have done really
- 1:18:10well. Absolutely.
- 1:18:13Talia went from sleepy to restless throughout this movie.
- 1:18:16She has had her own battles with the wind before.
- 1:18:19She has had her own battles with nature.
- 1:18:21She's allergic to a lot of nature.
- 1:18:22The grass, actually, the grass kills her.
- 1:18:25Well, it doesn't actually kill her, but it.
- 1:18:27Tries to. Terribly.
- 1:18:29It makes her really itchy. Yeah, we we supply medications
- 1:18:33to stop it. So I think that this is this
- 1:18:35movie was an actual threat to her.
- 1:18:37And she also thinks that the worst thing that could possibly
- 1:18:39happen to a relationship would be somebody going on a tiramisu
- 1:18:44date or somebody buying classroom if they didn't need
- 1:18:45to. So this I think this is a nine
- 1:18:49for Talia. I think this is almost as scary
- 1:18:51a scenario as she could come up with.
- 1:18:53She also like had the moments of the dogs.
- 1:18:55Having their panic. Yeah, she didn't like hearing
- 1:18:57the dogs panicking. Yeah, it was sad.
- 1:18:59Obviously Zoe relates to Alma, and she has to because Zoe's
- 1:19:03full name is Zoe Desche Meow. Unless she's in trouble, and
- 1:19:05then she's also Kittyani. But she's got a she's got the
- 1:19:10same eyes as Zooey Deschanel. She does.
- 1:19:12She was named after Zooey Deschanel.
- 1:19:14We didn't name her unfortunately, because we got
- 1:19:16her as in the same circumstances as a.
- 1:19:20As our other pets where your son is like, hey, here's this the
- 1:19:23same circumstances that Elliot and all my got Jess basically
- 1:19:25that's where I was. I was going there, but I didn't
- 1:19:28like, nobody died in our case. It's just like, yeah.
- 1:19:31You know, well, I mean, I don't know what happened to her mom.
- 1:19:35OK. I guess that's true.
- 1:19:36Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:19:37I mean, in terms of humans, yeah.
- 1:19:38Nobody died, Yeah. Who would you relate to?
- 1:19:40Who'd you relate? To obviously related to the hot
- 1:19:43dog couple. The hot dog couple you.
- 1:19:45Did. Yeah, I did so hard.
- 1:19:47Yeah, you were a green weenie, just like.
- 1:19:48Them yeah. And I would absolutely like call
- 1:19:52you out for using binoculars to spy on neighbors.
- 1:19:55That's true. I would call you out too.
- 1:19:56Yeah, man, this is a tough one because I relate to both Elliot
- 1:20:01and Allman different aspects here.
- 1:20:03I relate to Elliot with like, the serial thing and like the,
- 1:20:06you know, the whole kid thing. Yeah, I get it.
- 1:20:09But I also relate to Alma with the whole thing of like, not
- 1:20:11wanting the personal drama shared with other people.
- 1:20:14Yeah, because like that was the thing was like, I get it because
- 1:20:16I'm like that too. I like to keep my shit private.
- 1:20:18If something happens to me, I don't really like to share that
- 1:20:22with other people. Yeah, that's that is very true.
- 1:20:25So yeah, you know, I, I think I'm going to scale more towards
- 1:20:28Alma here, OK? I relate to her.
- 1:20:32All right. All right.
- 1:20:36I guess it was tagline. No, not.
- 1:20:37Tagline Dream sequel. OK, so dream sequel.
- 1:20:41Do we want to find out what happens in France?
- 1:20:43Yeah, let's see what. Happens or do we want to, do we
- 1:20:45want to like come back to it in modern times, like now that
- 1:20:47we've been through like a pandemic and everything?
- 1:20:49Because I think we know a lot more about human nature.
- 1:20:52That's true, Unfortunately, yeah.
- 1:20:55We wouldn't have people exiting New York.
- 1:20:58City No, they feel like that's illegal.
- 1:21:01You can't tell me just inside my house.
- 1:21:04You can't tell me to leave my house either.
- 1:21:06You can't tell me anything. Yeah, well, OK, so would it be
- 1:21:11the plants? Still, I feel like something
- 1:21:13else is going to happen. Like clearly the message didn't
- 1:21:15get received when it was plants killing people.
- 1:21:18I think it's like all of nature working together, so it's like
- 1:21:20plants, like we've got maybe like acid rain or something like
- 1:21:23that. Combinations of different things
- 1:21:25happening and maybe this time I can get like a more global
- 1:21:28perspective throughout the whole movie.
- 1:21:31Yeah, like a different different parts of the world having
- 1:21:35different types of Yeah. So like the the plants in one
- 1:21:39area, acid rain in another. I don't know, you could have.
- 1:21:45I would love to see like extreme like temperature changes.
- 1:21:49Yeah, that hearing in. One area, yeah.
- 1:21:51Oh my God, yeah. Like areas like in September in
- 1:21:54Kentucky, you start off the day in a sweater and then shorts and
- 1:21:57AT shirt. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:59People would write it off. You're right.
- 1:22:00Yeah. OK.
- 1:22:02Yeah, I think that that could be interesting.
- 1:22:03And this time, Don Wahlberg. Donnie, Donnie.
- 1:22:09Donnie. Yeah.
- 1:22:11Cuz I mean come on. Like he would do better.
- 1:22:15I think he would do better. I could see I'm not being like,
- 1:22:19between you and me. Don't tell your brother the rest
- 1:22:21of this. Don't tell him.
- 1:22:21But you're a better writer. But like one of them that
- 1:22:24someone hates Donnie Wahlberg. He's like he writes him as this
- 1:22:27hateful person. He's like, well, clearly this is
- 1:22:29the man that Don. Ward is like.
- 1:22:31He's just a shit bag. Oh man.
- 1:22:35OK, there we go. We got it.
- 1:22:37All right now. Tagline, what?
- 1:22:39What did you write down? I, I put in a couple, I try to,
- 1:22:42I we might need to like reword them just a little bit.
- 1:22:44OK, let's hear them. This is not a trap.
- 1:22:49If we don't improve, we'll never grow old.
- 1:22:52Oh. Wait, wait, wait.
- 1:22:53And then I I reworded it a little bit to a tale as old as
- 1:22:56the Earth, where the Earth is a trap.
- 1:22:59Man that's pretty good. OK I feel like you can throw an
- 1:23:06avatar the last day I've been cuz the air is like part of.
- 1:23:13The earth is a trap and the air bends around you.
- 1:23:16The Earth is a trap. An Avatar.
- 1:23:19An Airbender. I like to imagine you just want
- 1:23:25it to be a tail as old as the earth.
- 1:23:26The earth is a trap. Avatar the.
- 1:23:29Last day, that's. That's the tagline right there.
- 1:23:49Oh my God, that's a perfect tagline right there.
- 1:23:51Avatar the Last. I want every critique on invite
- 1:23:56someone to just end with an Avatar the Last Airbender.
- 1:24:01That's. Amazing.
- 1:24:02Oh my God. OK.
- 1:24:03Good job. Thank you.
- 1:24:05No, that would have happened without your whole thing right
- 1:24:08there. OK, I guess we are now good to
- 1:24:14go with our reviews. Yeah.
- 1:24:15Yes. OK, so I I pulled a couple here
- 1:24:20because I didn't know where we were going to land.
- 1:24:22OK, so I guess we're more on the positive side.
- 1:24:25So I'll read the negative review.
- 1:24:27It's a 2 out of 10 titled More Like the Crap Inning.
- 1:24:34Is M Night Shaman the director of this flop?
- 1:24:36The same M Night Shaman who made the 6th Sense and Unbreakable?
- 1:24:39You'd be forgiven for thinking that the director of the earlier
- 1:24:42classic Fair had been replaced by a talentless clone after
- 1:24:45watching this hugely embarrassing environmental
- 1:24:47disaster thriller. It's a film which opens with a
- 1:24:50handful of breathtaking set pieces involving mass human
- 1:24:53madness before swiftly descending into the kind of
- 1:24:56silly shtick that even the sci-fi Channel producer would
- 1:24:59think twice before green lighting.
- 1:25:01The blame is clearly fixed on Shyamalan shoulders.
- 1:25:04He didn't only direct The Stripe, but wrote it to him.
- 1:25:07That indicates that the production was a labor of love,
- 1:25:10but with. But what a misguided 1.
- 1:25:13The script is appallingly bad, full of kind of unreal dialogue
- 1:25:18that would only exists in a bad bee movie, and the whole film
- 1:25:22has a tired, subdued seen it all before heir to it.
- 1:25:26As for the cast, well, words fell me.
- 1:25:28Mark Wahlberg is wooden and hopelessly, helplessly miscast
- 1:25:32as a science teacher, delivering his lines with a kind of
- 1:25:34disbelief that he's been caught up in this mess.
- 1:25:38So a Deschanel who I previously saw in Yes Man is apparently
- 1:25:42awful, her wide eyed style of acting more suited to a
- 1:25:45pantomime than a movie. The only one who gives a decent
- 1:25:50performance in this reliable. Or oh it's the reliable John
- 1:25:55Leguizamo, and he doesn't get a great deal of screen time at
- 1:25:58all. Tapping marches from 1 minor set
- 1:26:01piece to the next, always promising more than it delivers.
- 1:26:04The planning is basic and obvious, never less than
- 1:26:06contrived. Some moments, like when the two
- 1:26:09boys start going crazy, are so over the top and badly done that
- 1:26:12they become hilarious to watch. So in the end that's what this
- 1:26:16becomes, so bad it's funny experience.
- 1:26:18A modern day variant on the likes of Robot Monster and
- 1:26:21Planning Planet 9 from Outer Yeah, pointed in from outer
- 1:26:24space. Maybe audiences 50 years down
- 1:26:27the line will feel the same way. I'm just going to say as
- 1:26:32somebody who lives the Sci-fi Channel original movies, I they
- 1:26:35would absolutely green light something like.
- 1:26:37This. Yeah, I think they would.
- 1:26:39But I agree with a lot of what this person says.
- 1:26:42I mean, there was like, the bad acting, the bad writing.
- 1:26:44Like it became so bad. It's good.
- 1:26:47Yeah, it really did. It's one of those things that
- 1:26:49like, back when I first saw it, I definitely hated on it quite a
- 1:26:53bit too. I thought it was pretty lame and
- 1:26:56cheesy. But like I said, now that I
- 1:27:00understand his sense of humor a little bit better, I can
- 1:27:02appreciate it a lot more for what it is.
- 1:27:04I think knowing that there is a case that it was intentionally
- 1:27:09cheesy. Yeah.
- 1:27:10Because like, you mean he did go and try for a Bee Movie.
- 1:27:13Yeah. But I mean, he did say he was
- 1:27:15trying to go for something deeper eventually too, so.
- 1:27:18Yeah, but I think once you start writing something AB movie.
- 1:27:21It's got the bones of that. Yeah.
- 1:27:22Yeah. Like there's really nothing
- 1:27:24else. He, I mean, he could have just
- 1:27:26completely changed it. But yeah, it lies in this weird
- 1:27:29space of being like a schlocky. Like it's not really schlocky,
- 1:27:32but like just AB movie caught up in like a normal M night movie.
- 1:27:38Yeah. It has like an identity crisis
- 1:27:40whenever you think about it. Yeah, a little bit.
- 1:27:42Yeah, but I enjoy it too. You know I I do have a good time
- 1:27:47with this movie, so how about we check in on our listeners and
- 1:27:51see what they said I. Would like to hear from
- 1:27:53everybody else. Yeah, we got a decent amount, so
- 1:27:55thanks everybody for showing out on episode 300 here.
- 1:27:59Half Price Horror says one of those movies where you question
- 1:28:01literally every creative decision and yet you don't want
- 1:28:04the film makers to change any of them.
- 1:28:06Absolutely. It's a perfect way.
- 1:28:08To absolutely. Word Zombie says.
- 1:28:14As for the movie review, I don't care what anyone says.
- 1:28:17It was not that bad. Interesting idea and some crazy
- 1:28:20kills. Maybe the acting was lacking in
- 1:28:21some parts, but still worth the watch no matter the hey.
- 1:28:24Yeah, man. Like, I I like the premise and I
- 1:28:27think it is like a pretty creepy idea, like seeing all these
- 1:28:30people act this way. It's unsettling.
- 1:28:33Yeah, honestly. It's yeah, it it definitely has
- 1:28:36an interesting hook to it and and some questionable
- 1:28:39performances at times. I agree with both those points.
- 1:28:42Undead Symphony Pod says out of all his movies, I found this the
- 1:28:46most terrifying and haunting. Nature reclaiming balance and
- 1:28:49the nature of some of the suicides was great.
- 1:28:51Conceptually, I've seen this once and still remember the
- 1:28:54opening, the tear in the roof of the Jeep and the ending.
- 1:28:58Yeah, yeah. I mean, same thing right there.
- 1:29:01Yeah. Good, good premise and final
- 1:29:04review from Queen Bean Tricks. Who says?
- 1:29:07I'm embarrassed to say after I saw this in theaters I was so
- 1:29:10freaked out by the lawnmower thing that I didn't sleep that
- 1:29:12night and much, much later realized how much of a joke this
- 1:29:15movie is and feel really silly about that now.
- 1:29:18Also in the opening scene I said, oh the twist is the plants
- 1:29:22did it, Hey good for you, you did it.
- 1:29:25I think that's the thing, this movie doesn't even have A twist,
- 1:29:27does it? Yeah, I, I think people like to
- 1:29:31act like it's the twist is that the plants are doing it, but
- 1:29:33that comes across pretty early on.
- 1:29:35Yeah, they like bring it up with the plant people, which is like
- 1:29:38in the start of the second act. I think it's so much like
- 1:29:45Shyamalan has this thing where everybody expects everything to
- 1:29:48have a big twist that even when he doesn't have A twist, they're
- 1:29:50like, man, that twist was lame. Yeah, you're.
- 1:29:53Right. It's like, I don't, I don't
- 1:29:54think it was a twist. Well, you're deciding it's A
- 1:29:56twist, but it's not actually A twist.
- 1:29:58That was what the guy at the Half Price books was saying when
- 1:30:01we were checking. I was like, why does he feel
- 1:30:02like he had to have A twist? I'm like, I don't really
- 1:30:05remember there being A twist. Was the twist that the plants
- 1:30:07were doing it? I don't know.
- 1:30:09Yeah, we, we hit it pretty early on the plants as the hypothesis
- 1:30:14and they keep, you know, referring back to it throughout
- 1:30:17the movie, so. Yeah, I will give you credit,
- 1:30:19though, figuring that out from the very first scene is good.
- 1:30:22Yeah, 'cause I mean, it's not obvious at all right there.
- 1:30:24So, yeah, props on that. And the lawnmower kill.
- 1:30:27Yeah. I mean, that makes me think of
- 1:30:29Sinister, which we watched not that long ago.
- 1:30:32They also do it in Sleep Away Camp 3.
- 1:30:33Yeah, anytime you have a lawnmower kill, it's pretty
- 1:30:36upsetting. It's a pretty tragic way to go.
- 1:30:39Yeah. Yeah All right well that's it
- 1:30:41for the review. So thanks everybody for pitching
- 1:30:43in. We always appreciate that
- 1:30:46always. And that does it for episode
- 1:30:48300. Yay we're in another century of
- 1:30:51episodes here. So we got we got a lot coming
- 1:30:56century. I don't know what's the term for
- 1:31:00the hundreds if it's not talking about years I.
- 1:31:04Don't. We're we're in, we're in the new
- 1:31:07bracket, we're in the next tier. We're in the three hundreds now.
- 1:31:10We moved out of the two hundreds.
