- 0:00Speaker 1: Well he's here now, Sean Patrick, means he's here to
- 0:03Speaker 1: talk about some movies that have opened up this past week.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Sean is a writer reporter editor at the Salt Lake Tribune.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Sltrib dot com is where you can find that stuff.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Team of reviews movies.
- 0:15Speaker 1: He's done so for many years now, twenties plus years,
- 0:18Speaker 1: thirty four thirty thirty plus two thirty two years he's
- 0:22Speaker 1: reviewed movies, and most of them most of those reviews
- 0:25Speaker 1: collected at movie cricket dot net.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Well for the last seven yes, last seven years, yes,
- 0:31Speaker 2: only seven?
- 0:31Speaker 1: Okay, what's happened to all the rest?
- 0:34Speaker 3: They're on the Tribune somewhere? All right, So Sean, what
- 0:38Speaker 3: do we got? We got four movies to talk about
- 0:40Speaker 3: this week? Okay, So going worse to first, we will
- 0:43Speaker 3: start with Freaky or Friday. This has been twenty two
- 0:46Speaker 3: years since Freaky Friday, when Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay
- 0:49Speaker 3: Lohan played mother and daughter who swat bodies and learned
- 0:52Speaker 3: how the other side lives.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I like Jamie Lee Curtis, I just have no interest
- 0:57Speaker 1: in this at all.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I mean I love her. I like Lindsay Lohan.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I think she got a raw deal from the tabloids
- 1:05Speaker 3: and whatnot. So now today, Anna is a manager for
- 1:10Speaker 3: a pop star and a single mom to a fifteen
- 1:12Speaker 3: year old Harper played by Julia Butters and Jimmy the
- 1:15Speaker 3: Curtis's Tests, is a therapist with a podcast and a
- 1:19Speaker 3: grandma who sometimes oversteps all right, as you've not it.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Anna is also about to get married to Eric, a
- 1:25Speaker 3: chef played by Many Jacinto, and Eric has a daughter
- 1:28Speaker 3: who's Harper's age, Lily played by Sophia Hammond's and Harper
- 1:31Speaker 3: and Lily don't like each other at all, oh darn,
- 1:35Speaker 3: so that the idea that they're going to become stepsisters
- 1:37Speaker 3: soon is not hitting well with either of them. So
- 1:40Speaker 3: at Anna's bachelorette party, which is a very family friendly party.
- 1:44Speaker 3: This is a Disney movie after all, of course, they
- 1:46Speaker 3: run into a psychic played by Vanessa Bear, and the
- 1:49Speaker 3: psychic observes that Anna and Tess have walked in each
- 1:51Speaker 3: other's paths before, and the lessons learned then they serve
- 1:55Speaker 3: them well very soon. So of course that night, there's
- 1:58Speaker 3: a switch, the body switch, and Lily this future step
- 2:02Speaker 3: daughter and Tess the grandma. They swap bodies, and then
- 2:05Speaker 3: Anna and Harper mother and daughter. They swap bodies, so
- 2:10Speaker 3: Anna and Tess in the teen bodies go looking for
- 2:13Speaker 3: the psychic to undo the curse, and then Lily and Harper,
- 2:16Speaker 3: now in the adult bodies, go about trying to break.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Up the wedding. All right, and and as our old.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Friend used to say, wackiness ensues. Here's the thing. I
- 2:25Speaker 3: wanted to like this movie. I like the first one.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I love Jadie the Curtis and like I said, I
- 2:29Speaker 3: think Lindsay Lowan got a raw deal from the tabloids
- 2:31Speaker 3: and bad.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Management over the years.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Unfortunately, the movie is more manic than funny and it
- 2:38Speaker 3: and it overloads on nostalgia for the first movie. They
- 2:41Speaker 3: even they even pull Chad Michael Murray out of Mothball.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Lots of callbacks, lots of callbox. So two stars for
- 2:47Speaker 3: Freaky Your Friday. It's playing everywhere, you can't miss it.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Let's get to some good ones if you want a
- 2:53Speaker 3: good family movie. And this is a surprise is something
- 2:55Speaker 3: called sketch. This is actually from our friends Dad and
- 2:59Speaker 3: Provo Angel Studios. Really they bought they bought that. They
- 3:02Speaker 3: bought this at a film vestible. But so it's not
- 3:04Speaker 3: something to actually produced themselves. We have a nine year
- 3:07Speaker 3: old girl, Amber who's drawing pictures of scary monsters in
- 3:11Speaker 3: her sketchbook, and counselor at the school tells her this
- 3:14Speaker 3: is therapeutic, especially in a family where Amber's mother has
- 3:18Speaker 3: recently died in Amber's brother Jack and their dad aren't
- 3:21Speaker 3: coping with the loss at all. So and a Jack
- 3:25Speaker 3: finds a pond in the woods and it turns out
- 3:27Speaker 3: to be rather supernatural and supernatural padu things, things that
- 3:32Speaker 3: go in the water come back fixed, and at one
- 3:36Speaker 3: point Amber's sketchwock falls in the water, and soon her
- 3:38Speaker 3: drawings are coming to life and heading down to their
- 3:41Speaker 3: small town like it's a tokyo during a Kaiju convention.
- 3:46Speaker 3: This is a very clever mix of live action and animation.
- 3:49Speaker 3: It's it's actually it's really a horror movie, but it's
- 3:52Speaker 3: PG thirteen, but it's PG. It's a PG horror movie.
- 3:54Speaker 3: JUSTG just PG. Yeah, so very effective scare, some very
- 3:59Speaker 3: tension filled scenes. There's even a reference to Psycho, which
- 4:02Speaker 3: is a weird thing to see in a kid's movie,
- 4:05Speaker 3: but kind of cool. And some good comedy and also
- 4:08Speaker 3: some serious drama because it's ultimately about processing grief.
- 4:13Speaker 2: People you'd recognize in here.
- 4:14Speaker 3: The dad is Tony Hale from Weep, and his sister
- 4:19Speaker 3: is played by Darcy Cardon from The Good Place.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Three Stars for Sketch three stars. It is all over
- 4:25Speaker 2: the place.
- 4:25Speaker 1: No blood flows, but lots of ink does.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yes, things like that? All right? Next one, Okay, It's
- 4:31Speaker 2: never over.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Jeff Buckley there's a documentary about the singer songwriter from
- 4:35Speaker 3: the nineties. Recorded one album, spent a few years touring,
- 4:39Speaker 3: and just as he was about to start recording a
- 4:40Speaker 3: second album, he drowned in a river near Memphis at
- 4:43Speaker 3: the age of thirty in ninety seven. He lived two
- 4:46Speaker 3: years longer than his famous father, the Folks singer Tim Buckley,
- 4:49Speaker 3: who died of an overdose at twenty eight in nineteen
- 4:52Speaker 3: seventy five. Movie talks about how Jeff was trying to
- 4:54Speaker 3: get out of his father's shadow be his own kind
- 4:56Speaker 3: of guy. Main interviews are with his mom, who was
- 4:59Speaker 3: seventeen when Jeff was born, and two of his old girlfriends.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Through these women, you really get a great You get
- 5:06Speaker 3: pieces of the puzzle, and the movie lets the viewer
- 5:09Speaker 3: sort of put it all together and you get a
- 5:11Speaker 3: sense of Jeff Buckley, both as a person and his musician.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Three and a half starts right, It's never over Jeff Buckley.
- 5:18Speaker 2: His dad was really talented. Yeah, and he was.
- 5:21Speaker 3: He hadn't amazing He had like a five octive voice. Unfortunately,
- 5:24Speaker 3: his most famous song isn't one of his. It's the
- 5:27Speaker 3: it's the covering of Leonard Cohen Talla do you yeah?
- 5:31Speaker 1: All right?
- 5:31Speaker 2: What's that? Weapons? Weapons? Here we go? Okay.
- 5:34Speaker 3: This is a horror thriller that goes in lots of
- 5:36Speaker 3: directions to the point where you think it's going to
- 5:38Speaker 3: go off the rails, and then it doesn't and delivered,
- 5:41Speaker 3: but it delivers the shocks and the bloodshed and says
- 5:43Speaker 3: a lot about small town panic. We're told at the
- 5:46Speaker 3: beginning that one night, at two seventeen am, seventeen children
- 5:50Speaker 3: got out of bed, went outside, ran off into the night,
- 5:52Speaker 3: and we've never seen again. A month later, the cops
- 5:56Speaker 3: don't have any answers, and the townspok are ready to
- 5:59Speaker 3: accuse the second grade teacher whose class all the kids
- 6:01Speaker 3: were in, of being doing something.
- 6:04Speaker 2: She must know something.
- 6:07Speaker 3: The script follows different people affected by this uh, starting
- 6:10Speaker 3: with that teacher, Justine played by Julia Garner, so our
- 6:13Speaker 3: new silver surfer. Then we follow one of the one
- 6:17Speaker 3: of the dads of the of the of the kids,
- 6:20Speaker 3: played by Josh Brolin, And then we follow a cop
- 6:23Speaker 3: who's also the teacher's ex played by Alden aron Reich,
- 6:27Speaker 3: and then the principal at the school played by Benedict Wong.
- 6:30Speaker 3: And then there's a chapter about the one kid in
- 6:32Speaker 3: the class that didn't disappear. And we follow each of
- 6:36Speaker 3: these sort of in sequence, and it'll eventually pieced.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Together what happened.
- 6:40Speaker 3: There's one more character who's important here because she shows
- 6:42Speaker 3: up in the in the teacher and the Dad's bad dreams,
- 6:46Speaker 3: played by Amy Madigan, who I haven't seen her in
- 6:49Speaker 3: a little while. Yeah, but oh my gosh, this is
- 6:52Speaker 3: one of the she's She does some amazingly creepy things
- 6:56Speaker 3: here and she this this she turns into into one
- 6:59Speaker 3: of the most srived delible horror film characters you've ever seen.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Really cool.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Well, I mean, you know, his last movie, Barbarian, uh
- 7:05Speaker 3: huh scared the hell out of yah.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Zach Krager. The directory did Barbarian, which was scary and weird.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and it and it did not go in any
- 7:14Speaker 3: direction you think it would go, you know, and same here.
- 7:18Speaker 3: He has a good sense of where to put the
- 7:20Speaker 3: camera and get good performances out of people. And it's
- 7:24Speaker 3: very dark, it's very fascinating and very darkly funny in places.
- 7:29Speaker 3: There's especially towards the end, there's there's there's a there's
- 7:31Speaker 3: a whole sequence from the end. We're just both terrifying
- 7:33Speaker 3: and hilarious simultaneously.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Well, it's background in comedy, whitest Kids, you know which.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Again, people have said that this movie is about him
- 7:40Speaker 3: dealing with the grief of losing his buddy Trevor Moore
- 7:44Speaker 3: from You is there themes about that? Well, the idea,
- 7:48Speaker 3: the idea of of like shock and grief and like
- 7:51Speaker 3: the town coming together but also falling apart at the
- 7:54Speaker 3: same time is really fascinating. And yeah, the uh, I
- 7:58Speaker 3: don't think i've seen all Then Aaron as good as
- 8:00Speaker 3: I've seen him here, really okay, And and then Julie
- 8:03Speaker 3: Garter's great, Josh Bollen's great. It's an amy a mattagant. Yeah,
- 8:07Speaker 3: just amazing.
- 8:07Speaker 2: How many three and a half weapons laying everywhere, It's everywhere. Horrific.
- 8:12Speaker 2: That's good to hear it.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Yeah, next week next week, Nobody Too, The Baba Kirk
- 8:18Speaker 4: It's a sequel, and then also highest to lowest new
- 8:21Speaker 4: Spike Lee movie with reunites him with Denzel Washington.
