- 0:03Speaker 1: Happy holidays, folks. Sent to Tim Jordan Hare with a
- 0:06Speaker 1: brief holiday message for you this week. I'm sure you're
- 0:09Speaker 1: all busy doing all your holiday things, so I've just
- 0:13Speaker 1: got a concept I want to give to you and
- 0:16Speaker 1: offered to you as a gift to this holiday season.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It's one of my favorite concepts. It's called Ubuntu Now.
- 0:23Speaker 1: According to a story, an anthropologist proposed a game to
- 0:26Speaker 1: a group of young children who belonged to a tribe
- 0:29Speaker 1: far far away, far from civilization. He placed the basket
- 0:33Speaker 1: of fruit under a tree. He told the kids that
- 0:36Speaker 1: whoever got to it first could have all the fruit
- 0:39Speaker 1: in the basket, So he lined them up. He gave
- 0:42Speaker 1: them the single to go, and to his surprise, the
- 0:45Speaker 1: kids joined hands and they ran to the tree together.
- 0:49Speaker 1: When they reached the basket, they all sat down to
- 0:52Speaker 1: enjoy the fruit as a whole group. When the scientists
- 0:55Speaker 1: asked the kids why they had run together instead of
- 0:57Speaker 1: racing to see who would reach the tree first to
- 0:59Speaker 1: yell fruit, one child spoke up. He said, because of Ubuntu.
- 1:05Speaker 1: What does ubuntu mean? The anthropologist asked, and the little
- 1:08Speaker 1: kid said, how can one of us be happy if
- 1:11Speaker 1: all the others are sad? Archbishop Desmond Tutu might say
- 1:17Speaker 1: that peace can be found in the African concept of Ubuntu.
- 1:22Speaker 1: He said, Ubuntu is a concept that we have in
- 1:24Speaker 1: Arbantu languages at home. It's the essence of being a person.
- 1:29Speaker 1: It means that we are people through other people. We
- 1:32Speaker 1: cannot be fully human alone. We're made for interdependence. We
- 1:37Speaker 1: are made for family. When you have Ubuntu, you embrace others.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You are generous and compassionate. He also said that if
- 1:46Speaker 1: the world had more Ubuntu, there would be no more war.
- 1:50Speaker 1: The powerful would help the weak, and that is where
- 1:53Speaker 1: peace is to be found. I hope for all of
- 1:57Speaker 1: you that there is plenty of Ubuntu in your families
- 1:59Speaker 1: during this hell day season. Think about each other, Take
- 2:02Speaker 1: care of each other. I'll see you back next year.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Take care
