- 0:06sometimes honestly pretty unsettling stuff.
- 0:08Definitely unsettling. Our mission here is to unpack a
- 0:11really unconventional theory, and frankly, it's quite
- 0:15disturbing. It's about these hidden links
- 0:18between environmental pollution and violent crime.
- 0:21Specifically serial killers, which is just wow.
- 0:25Exactly. You shared excerpts with us from
- 0:27JRE episode hashtag 2360 with Caroline Frazier.
- 0:30She's the author of Murderland. And this deep dive, it's
- 0:34probably going to challenge some of your assumptions about human
- 0:36behavior, maybe even the forces shaping our world.
- 0:40It certainly challenges conventional thinking.
- 0:42OK, so let's dive right in Caroline Frazier's book
- 0:44Murderland. It's not just theory, is it?
- 0:47It tackles this question she's apparently been thinking about
- 0:49since she was a kid. Right, growing up in the Pacific
- 0:52Northwest in the 70s. And the question was why?
- 0:56Why were there so many serial killers emerging from that
- 0:58specific region back then? Her research LED her down this
- 1:03well, this rabbit hole, to a premise that sounds wild at
- 1:06first, a connection between lead pollution and heightened
- 1:11aggression, violence. And she goes so far as to link
- 1:14it to the rise of serial killers themselves.
- 1:17It's a really bold claim. It is, but her work lays out
- 1:20some compelling evidence, doesn't it?
- 1:22Absolutely. And what's really interesting is
- 1:23how her own life story kind of intersected with this discovery.
- 1:27Oh yeah, How so? Well, she talks about living in
- 1:29Santa Fe, NM Apparently it had a pretty high homicide rate
- 1:32itself. And she was thinking about
- 1:34moving back to the Pacific Northwest, looking at real
- 1:37estate, you know, and she saw this listing on the Shawn Island
- 1:41in Puget Sound, undeveloped property.
- 1:44And the listing had this little note.
- 1:46Arsenic remediation may be necessary.
- 1:49Just like that, a small detail. Exactly.
- 1:51But it sparked something her curiosity.
- 1:53It LED her to start researching this notorious lead and copper
- 1:57smelter in Tacoma. The Asarco smelter.
- 2:00American Smelting and Refining Company.
- 2:02That's the one. It had been operating since,
- 2:04what, the late 1880s, 1890s, just pumping out pollution for
- 2:09decades. And this is where it gets really
- 2:11chilling, connecting back to the serial killer angle.
- 2:13Yeah. Frazier realized that some
- 2:15really notorious killers like Ted Bundy.
- 2:18And Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer.
- 2:20Both of them grew up right there in Tacoma during the smelter's
- 2:23peak years of operation. Wow.
- 2:26But she didn't just stop it like a geographical coincidence, she
- 2:30actually found GIS maps. Geographic information systems,
- 2:34right? Yeah.
- 2:35These maps let her look up specific addresses, including
- 2:38Ted Bundys actual childhood home.
- 2:40No way. Yes, and she could see the
- 2:42documented levels of lead and arsenic pollution right there in
- 2:47their yards. So it wasn't just a theory, it
- 2:49was measurable contamination where they grew up.
- 2:51Literal, quantifiable contamination.
- 2:54It really makes you think about how much our environment shapes
- 2:56us, doesn't it? It absolutely does.
- 2:58And connecting this to the bigger picture, I mean, serial
- 3:00killers are the extreme, right, the most extreme, horrifying end
- 3:04of the spectrum, Yeah. But most of the research on lead
- 3:07exposure looks at broader societal impacts.
- 3:10And these long term studies, they consistently show this
- 3:14strong link even with really small amounts of lead exposure.
- 3:17To things like learning problems.
- 3:19Problems. ADHD.
- 3:21Juvenile delinquency, adult crime rates too, and even
- 3:25measurable drops in IQ across populations.
- 3:28So it's not just about extreme violence, it's this general drag
- 3:31on cognitive function and impulse control.
- 3:34Exactly. It affects society much more
- 3:36widely. That is staggering, especially
- 3:38when you think how common lead exposure must have been.
- 3:40So OK, smelters were one big source.
- 3:42A major localized source, yes. But Frazier's work also looks at
- 3:45something even more widespread, right Leaded gasoline.
- 3:48Oh, absolutely. The book calls it a horrific
- 3:50experiment conducted on, well, generations of people.
- 3:54An experiment they knew the risks of.
- 3:56Apparently so. Companies like Standard Oil,
- 3:58DuPont, they knew the dangers back in the 1920s and 30s.
- 4:02Really. That early.
- 4:04Yeah, medical doctors actually warned them, said this would
- 4:07expose people to unprecedented levels of lead, dangerous
- 4:11levels. But they chose it anyway over
- 4:14other options. Over alternatives like ethanol
- 4:17and the reason ethanol couldn't be patented, it wouldn't be as
- 4:20profitable. Wow, so the book frames this as
- 4:23a a massive moral failure A. Profound moral failure, yeah,
- 4:28even mortaring on evil is how it's described, considering they
- 4:31knew the potential harm. That's quite an accusation, but
- 4:34based on the evidence presented. It paints a pretty damning
- 4:37picture of corporate decision making.
- 4:39And it didn't stop there. The book talks about efforts to,
- 4:43you know, whitewash their reputations afterwards.
- 4:45Like cleaning up? Their image exactly.
- 4:47A bit like Alfred Nobel and the Nobel Prize, right?
- 4:50Inventor of dynamite trying to fix his Merchant of Death image.
- 4:54Interesting parallel. And the book brings up Thomas
- 4:56Midgley. He's almost this tragic figure
- 4:59in it all. Who was he?
- 5:00He invented both the leaded gas formula and CS ES, the
- 5:03chlorofluorocarbons. The ones that blew a hole in the
- 5:06ozone layer? Seriously.
- 5:08The very same. And despite the, you know,
- 5:10catastrophic consequences later on, he got the highest medal
- 5:14from the American Chemistry Association.
- 5:16Unbelievable. And get this, he died in this
- 5:19bizarre accident involving A pulley system he invented for
- 5:23himself because he had polio, and some people speculate the
- 5:26polio itself might have been linked to lead exposure from his
- 5:29own work. It's just layers of irony there.
- 5:33That's incredible, a man celebrated for inventions that
- 5:35ended up poisoning people and the planet.
- 5:38It really shows how progress can go wrong when profits the main
- 5:42driver. It's a chilling example for
- 5:44sure. So, OK, we have this picture of
- 5:46widespread lead exposure, but was the Pacific Northwest really
- 5:50disproportionately affected in terms of serial killers?
- 5:53The book argues yes, finding an extraordinary number
- 5:55concentrated there. And beyond just the serial
- 5:58killers, the overall violent crime rate.
- 6:00In Tacoma specifically, it just skyrocketed in the mid 70s.
- 6:04Which matched a national trend, right?
- 6:06Crime was rising everywhere in the 70s and 80s.
- 6:08It did align with the national trend, and of course there are
- 6:11other theories for that national rise.
- 6:12Like the baby boomers, coming of age, economic uncertainty,
- 6:16Vietnam. Exactly.
- 6:17All those factors are discussed, but the science around
- 6:20environmental toxins, especially lead, offers this really
- 6:24compelling additional layer and often overlooked factor.
- 6:29Right, it doesn't have to be the only cause, but a significant
- 6:31contributing 1. Precisely.
- 6:33And the research points not just to lead but also things like
- 6:35cadmium, zinc, manganese, all part of this particular
- 6:41pollution from industry. And these heavy metals, they can
- 6:43get into the brain. Yeah, they can cross the blood
- 6:46brain barrier relatively easily, and that's linked to all sorts
- 6:49of neurological problems, health issues, heart problems,
- 6:53dementia, Alzheimer's, even ALS. Wow.
- 6:56And crucially, the statistical analysis shows this really
- 6:59strong correlation. You overlay the charts and the
- 7:02rise in airborne LED in the mid 70s lines up incredibly closely
- 7:06with the rise in violent crime. It's not just a coma, either.
- 7:09No, the book uses El Paso, TX is another example.
- 7:12ASARCO had a huge smelter there too.
- 7:14And Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker, he grew up near that
- 7:17smelter. And El Paso also saw a big spike
- 7:21in violent crime in the 70s. So you see these patterns
- 7:24repeating in places with simile industrial pollution.
- 7:27Exactly. It suggests it wasn't just a
- 7:29Pacific Northwest anomaly. They mentioned Rick Nevins work
- 7:31too, the Lucifer curves. Yes, those graphs are really
- 7:35striking. About 45 of them showing violent
- 7:38crime, even things like teen pregnancies.
- 7:41Mirroring lead exposure levels. Almost perfectly mirroring the
- 7:44rise and then the fall of lead exposure over decades.
- 7:48It's almost uncanny how neat the correlation looks.
- 7:52But the data is the data. It's hard to argue with that
- 7:55visual evidence. The book also touches on why
- 7:57we're so fascinated by true crime, doesn't it?
- 7:59Yeah, suggesting it might partly stem from, you know, women's
- 8:02collective experiences with fear and male violence, which is a
- 8:06whole other layer. Frazier herself had a personal
- 8:08connection there, too, didn't she?
- 8:09She did grew up just miles from where Bundy started his
- 8:12abductions back when serial killer wasn't even really a
- 8:15common term. And she points out something
- 8:17chilling about Bundy. That he was a suspect in an
- 8:20abduction of an 8 year old girl back in 1961 when he was only
- 8:2414. Yeah, that adds another
- 8:26disturbing dimension. It really does.
- 8:27So backing up a bit, what exactly were these smelters
- 8:31doing that caused so much pollution?
- 8:33Well basically they were melting rocks or from mines to get the
- 8:37valuable metals out. Lead, copper, silver, gold.
- 8:41OK, standard smelting, right? But the process releases huge
- 8:44amounts of particulate pollution, dust, fumes, heavy
- 8:49metals, all going up to smoke sacks and out into the air and
- 8:52surrounding land. And the book is some specific
- 8:54examples. Oh yeah, horrific ones like a
- 8:57fire in 1973 at the Bunker Hill smelter in Kellogg, ID.
- 9:00What happened? The fire destroyed its filters,
- 9:03the things meant to capture the pollution.
- 9:06So for 18 months, a year and a half, heavy metals just rained
- 9:09down on the area, including onto an elementary school right
- 9:11across the street. Oh my God, the kids.
- 9:14They tested the kids. Their blood lead levels average
- 9:1750 micrograms per deciliter 50. 50 and the safe level now is
- 9:21what like 3.5? Exactly.
- 9:23The CDC recommends action at 3.5 now it just shows how much our
- 9:28understanding has changed and how high those exposures were.
- 9:32That's horrifying. What did the company do?
- 9:34We'll get this. The company Gulf and Western
- 9:37owned it. Then they apparently calculated
- 9:40the worth of those kids lives. They calculated, yeah.
- 9:43At about $1,000,000 each and decided it was more profitable
- 9:48to keep operating without the filters and just risk lawsuits
- 9:52than to, you know, fix the problem immediately and protect
- 9:54the children. I have no words for that, just
- 9:56calculating human lives against profit.
- 9:58It's really stark example of corporate disregard laid bare.
- 10:01And the consequences for Ozarko eventually.
- 10:04Huge. They eventually declared
- 10:05bankruptcy largely because of these environmental liabilities,
- 10:08and they face this massive, unprecedented EPA settlement.
- 10:12How much $2 billion for cleaning up 20 Superfund sites.
- 10:16These are the most contaminated places in the country.
- 10:18And that Idaho site was one of them.
- 10:20Yes, and Lake Kurda Lane nearby, which is so polluted at the
- 10:23bottom they can barely touch it without making things worse by
- 10:27stirring it all up again. Just impossible clean up jobs
- 10:30almost. Pretty much.
- 10:31And there's that interesting little tidbit about Frank
- 10:34Herbert, the author of Dune. He was from Tacoma.
- 10:36Yeah, and apparently his disgust with that as Arco Smelter
- 10:40directly inspired the themes of ecological destruction in Dune.
- 10:44Wow, art imitating life, or rather, pollution.
- 10:49Something like that. So how do you even clean up
- 10:51something like Tacoma? It's a monumental task.
- 10:54Yeah. They literally had to dig up and
- 10:55replace tons and tons of contaminated soil in people's
- 10:58yards. Just physically remove it, yeah.
- 11:01But even then, some of the worst stuff like this highly
- 11:04contaminated material called the Arsenic Kitchen from Everett.
- 11:07What did they do with that They. Basically put it in a giant
- 11:09super heavy duty plastic lined bag like a toxic waste garbage
- 11:13bag, buried it and capped it with soil.
- 11:16Seriously just buried it. Yep, and then condos were built
- 11:19on top of the old smelter site condos.
- 11:21On top of that. Condos with apparently just a
- 11:24small historical display about the smelter near the public
- 11:27bathroom. And they built a park called
- 11:30Dune Park, funnily enough. On the slag land.
- 11:33On the slag heap, yeah, lined with plastic to stop leakage.
- 11:36It just shows the scale right? Billions spent, and often the
- 11:40best you can do is contain it, not truly remove it.
- 11:43It really drives home the long term legacy of this stuff.
- 11:45OK. So we've looked at the past, the
- 11:47smelters, the leaded gas. This devastating historical
- 11:51pollution. But the deep dive makes it clear
- 11:53this isn't just history. Frazier's work really pushes us
- 11:57to ask, what are the modern unseen poisons?
- 12:01Are we creating the next Murderland?
- 12:03It's a crucial question. Frazier herself had a scare,
- 12:07didn't she? Finding arsenic in her system?
- 12:09Yeah, but. That was organic arsenic from
- 12:11eating too many sardines, apparently, which is different.
- 12:13Right, Organic arsenic occurs naturally in seafood.
- 12:16It accumulates the smelters they were pumping out in organic
- 12:19arsenic. The really toxic kind used in
- 12:22rat poison insecticides. Exactly.
- 12:24And that stuff contaminated huge areas of Washington way beyond
- 12:28just the immediate smelter sites.
- 12:29It persists in the environment. So what are the parallels today?
- 12:33Plastics. Plastics are a huge one the book
- 12:35touches on. Microplastics are literally
- 12:37everywhere now. They found them in human brains.
- 12:40In our brains. How much?
- 12:41An amount equivalent to about a spoon is what the research
- 12:44suggests, and they build up in the food chain, especially meat.
- 12:48That's deeply concerning, and the solutions aren't always
- 12:52better. Sometimes, not like paper straws
- 12:54often have these forever chemical coatings that might be
- 12:58worse than the plastic they replace.
- 13:00Even glass bottom caps can leach micro plastics.
- 13:02So we try to fix one problem and accidentally create another.
- 13:06It's a recurring theme, unfortunately.
- 13:08Good intentions, unforeseen consequences.
- 13:11And it makes you question other things we take for granted, like
- 13:15natural gas stoves. Is that safe?
- 13:18What about clean coal? After reading about leaded gas,
- 13:21those terms definitely sound more suspicious.
- 13:23Don't they like potentially dangerous marketing speak?
- 13:26Definitely. The book also goes into fluoride
- 13:28and drinking water, which is always controversial.
- 13:30Highly controversial, Fraser note studies correlating high
- 13:33fluoride levels with lower Iqs, yet it's still widely added for
- 13:37dental health. Even though we know there's no
- 13:39safe level of lead and historically people had fewer
- 13:42cavities before sugar was everywhere.
- 13:44Exactly. It raises questions about the
- 13:46priorities and the science used in public health policy.
- 13:49And underlying all this is the worry about regulatory bodies
- 13:51like the EPA right being defunded.
- 13:54Yeah, that's a major concern raised.
- 13:56If the agency is responsible for oversight and cleanup are
- 13:59weakened, what happens to existing Superfund sites?
- 14:03What new threats are emerging unchecked?
- 14:05It reminds me of that zone Rouge in France, the WWI battlefield.
- 14:10Still too toxic for people. A chilling precedent for long
- 14:13term man made contamination zones.
- 14:16So wrapping this up, this deep dive into murder land, it really
- 14:19exposes a, well, a dark side of industrial history, doesn't it?
- 14:23It really does. These conscious corporate
- 14:25choices prioritizing profit, leading to massive environmental
- 14:29damage with these profound, often hidden impacts on human
- 14:33health and behavior. But as you mentioned, with the
- 14:34Lucifer curves, there is that glimmer of hope in the story
- 14:37too. Absolutely.
- 14:39Rick Nevins work showing that when lead was removed from
- 14:42gasoline, there was a dramatic, undeniable fall in violent crime
- 14:46rates and fewer active serial killers.
- 14:49It shows collective action can work.
- 14:51Addressing these environmental factors can make a real
- 14:53difference. Undeniable progress was made.
